US to consider mass release of detained migrants over budget woes

US Southern Border Becomes Global Entry Point For Asylum Seekers

A senior US immigration official has said that authorities plan to release thousands of migrants from detention amid a severe budget crunch.

HiIndia Newsdesk

Washington: As political and racial persecution grew worse in his native Mauritania, Barry looked for a way out. Scouring discussion groups on social media for tips on clandestine migration, he soon found that the longtime standby of risky sea voyages in leaky open boats to Europe wasn't the only option. There was the United States -- via Mexico. The journey of Barry -- who asked only to be identified by his first name -- by land from Mexico in July reflects the growing reality of the southern US border becoming a global way station for asylum seekers, rather than only Latin American migrants.

Meta boss Zuckerberg takes a swipe at rival Apple

HiIndia Newsdesk

The official from US Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) told CBS, the BBC's US partner, that between 4,000 and 6,000 migrants could be released. A bipartisan border bill that would have funded immigration detentions collapsed last week. More than 6.3 million migrants have entered the US illegally since 2021. ICE is currently holding approximately 38,000 migrants in long-term detention facilities.

Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg has taken a personal swipe at rival company Apple's new headset. The Vision Pro grabbed headlines as celebrities including Diplo and T-Pain wore it in public, with the "passthrough" feature allowing them to see their surroundings while using it. But in a video shot using the Meta Quest 3's own passthrough, Zuckerberg insisted his company's headset is "the best product, period". Apple has been approached for comment.

Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin released from hospital

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas HiIndia Newsdesk

Washington: (IANS) The US House of Representatives has voted to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro

Mayorkas for his alleged failure to secure the US-Mexico border from illegal immigration. Mayorkas became the first cabinet member to face impeachment in nearly 150 years. The Republicanled House on Tuesday voted 214 to 213 for the measure, after an earlier attempt failed last week. The issue now heads to the Democratic-led Senate, where it is likely to fail. President Joe Biden called the vote a "blatant act of unconstitutional partisanship" and a "political stunt", the BBC reported. The vote was largely divided along party lines, with 210 Democrats voting against the impeachment, along with three Republican representatives -- Tom McClintock of California, Ken Buck of Colorado and Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin.

Biden slams Trump criticism of Nato as 'shameful'

US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin has been released from hospital and resumed his duties, the Pentagon has said. Mr Austin, 70, was admitted to the critical care unit at a DC-area hospital on Sunday for symptoms of an "emergent bladder issue". In a statement, Mr Austin's doctors said he was in "good condition" after receiving non-surgical treatment. They added that the bladder issue was unrelated to Mr Austin's prostate cancer diagnosis of late last year.

The bipartisan border bill that faltered due to Republican opposition last week would have earmarked $7.6bn (£6bn) for ICE, including an additional $3.2bn for detention capacity that would have boosted the agency's ability to house detainees by several thousand beds. According to the Washington Post which first reported the story - the bill's collapse prompted ICE officials to circulate an internal proposal to slash costs by cutting detentions from 38,000 to 22,000. While the proposal would see some of the migrants deported back to their home countries, many would be released into the US, the report added. In response to a query from the BBC, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) - which includes ICE - said that Congress has "chronically underfunded" efforts to secure the border.

President Joe Biden has blasted criticism of Nato by his likely 2024 election challenger, Donald Trump, as "dumb", "shameful" and "un-American". The Democrat assailed Mr Trump for

saying he would "encourage" Russia to attack any Nato member that did not meet its defence spending quota. Mr Biden said the remarks underscored the urgency of passing a $95bn (£75bn) foreign aid package for US allies. The bill just passed the Senate, but it faces political headwinds in the House. At the White House on Tuesday, Mr Biden said a failure to pass the package - which includes $60bn for Ukraine would be "playing into Putin's hands". He said the stakes have risen because of Mr Trump's "dangerous" remarks over the weekend. "No other president in history has ever bowed down to a Russian dictator," Mr Biden said.

Uphill battle for $95bn foreign aid bill in US House HiIndia Newsdesk

The US Senate has approved a $95bn (£75bn) foreign aid package after months of political wrangling, but it faces an uphill battle in the House. While Senate Democrats were in favour of passing the bill, Republicans were divided and previously voted it down. The package has $60bn for Ukraine, $14bn for Israel's war against Hamas and $10bn for humanitarian aid in conflict zones, including in Gaza. The package, which includes more than $8bn for Taiwan and other IndoPacific allies, passed the Democraticcontrolled Senate by 70 to 29 in a predawn vote on Tuesday.

Imran Khan's Party Russian landing ship Caesar Kunikov Says Its "Mandate Stolen In The Dark sunk off Crimea, says Ukraine Of Night" HiIndia Newsdesk

A big Russian amphibious ship, the Caesar Kunikov, has been sunk off the coast of Russianoccupied Crimea, according to Ukraine's armed forces. Powerful explosions were heard early on Wednesday, according to local social media, which suggested the landing ship was hit south of the town of Yalta. Ukraine's intelligence directorate released video of what it said were Magura V5 sea drones striking the ship. Ukraine has repeatedly hit Russia's Black Sea fleet in occupied Crimea. Satellite images last year showed much of the fleet had left the peninsula for the Russian Black Sea port of Novorossiysk. Ahead of a Nato ministerial meeting in Brussels, the secretary general of the Western defensive alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, said Ukrainian forces had won a "great victory" in recent months, inflicting "heavy losses" on the Black

Vladimir Putin said in televised comments that "we have come very close to the creation of so-called cancer vaccines and immunomodulatory drugs of a new generation". Moscow: President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that Russian scientists were close to creating vaccines for cancer that could soon be available to patients. Putin said in televised comments that "we have come very close to the creation of so-called cancer vaccines and immunomodulatory drugs of a new generation". "I hope that soon they will be effectively used as methods of individual therapy," he added, speaking at a Moscow forum on future technologies. Putin did not specify which types of cancer the proposed vaccines would target, nor how. Several countries and companies are working on cancer vaccines. Last year the UK government signed an agreement with Germany-based BioNTech to launch clinical trials providing "personalised cancer treatments", aiming to reach 10,000 patients by 2030. Pharmaceutical companies Moderna and Merck & Co are developing an experimental cancer vaccine that a mid-stage study showed cut the chance of recurrence or death from melanoma - the most deadly skin cancer - by half after three years of treatment.

Indonesia's defence minister Prabowo Subianto is on course to become the country's next president after early results showed him winning more than

half of votes cast in the first round. "This victory is victory for all Indonesians," he told cheering supporters, hours after polls closed. Early polling samples showed the feared former general winning more than 57% of votes, avoiding a second round run-off. Full results in the world's largest singleday vote are not due for weeks. But Indonesia's state-approved polling samples - so-called "quick counts" performed within hours of voting - have been relatively accurate in previous years.

Electoral Bonds "Unconstitutional", Stop Immediately: Big Supreme Court Order HiIndia Newsdesk

New Delhi: In a historic judgment, the Supreme Court today struck down the electoral bonds scheme on the grounds that it violates the citizens' right to information. The electoral bonds scheme, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said, was unconstitutional and arbitrary and may lead to a quid pro quo arrangement between political parties and donors. The Constitution bench of five judges held that the stated objective of fighting black money and maintaining the confidentiality of donors cannot defend the scheme. Electoral bonds, the court said, are not the only way to curb black money. The Chief Justice of India said State Bank of India shall stop issue of these bonds at once and provide details of donations made through this mode to the Election Commission of India. The poll body was asked to publish this information on its website by March 13. The five-judge bench, also comprising Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Justice BR

PM Modi’s ‘temple diplomacy’ boosts India-UAE ties

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said State Bank of India shall stop issue of these bonds at once and provide details of donations to the Election Commission Gavai, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra, came up with a unanimous decision. "We have arrived

at a unanimous decision. There are two opinions, one by myself and another by Justice Sanjiv Khanna. Both arrive at

the same conclusion. There is a slight variance in the reasoning," the Chief Justice of India said. The electoral bonds scheme was introduced in 2018 with the stated objective of blocking black money from entering the political system. Then Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had then said the conventional practice of political funding in India was cash donations. "The sources are anonymous or pseudonymous. The quantum of money was never disclosed. The present system ensures unclean money coming from unidentifiable sources. It is a wholly non-transparent system," he had then said. On the confidentiality clause, he had said the disclosure of the donors' identity would make them go back to the cash option. Soon after the scheme was implemented, multiple parties challenged it in court. These included CPM, Congress leader Jaya Thakur and non-profit Association for Democratic Reforms. They argued that the confidentiality clause came in the way of the citizen's right to information

It was all a show of India’s ‘growing presence and influence’ not only in UAE alone but also in other parts of the world when ‘global aarti’ took place. The entire programme reaffirmed the focus of PM Modi’s diplomacy on “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (the whole world is one family). He succeeded in sending out the message of India’s greater connect with the Arab World as a family.

Ms Gandhi, 77, will not, however, withdraw from public life just yet; this is not a retirement but a repositioning, of sorts. She will move to the Rajya Sabha.

The family have been identified as Anand Sujith Henry, 42, his wife Alice Priyanka, 40, and their 4-yearold twin children Noah and Neithan. Cops found the bodies after one of the family's relatives sought a welfare check as nobody in the house was attending the call. The Indian-American couple, Anand and Alice, were found dead with gunshot wounds inside a bathroom. The twin children were discovered dead in a bedroom, with the cause of their death still under investigation. "After arriving officers were met with no response, they searched the perimeter of the home and did not see any signs of forced entry into the house. Finding an unlocked window, officers entered the home and located four people dead; 1 adult male, 1 adult female, and two children," police said. A 9mm pistol and a loaded magazine were recovered from the bathroom.

PM Modi said. "Do join this memorable occasion." "We are very proud of our diaspora and their efforts to deepen India’s engagement with the world. This evening, I look forward to being among UAE’s Indian diaspora at the #AhlanModi programme!" PM Modi

said. "Do join this memorable occasion." "Salute the spirit of #ahlanmodi volunteers... after a long day of rehearsals at the stadium, still dancing on their way home. So much excitement on having #ModiInUAE," the Alhan Modi handle on X wrote. According to local media reports, Prime Minister's event has been scaled down, with heavy rains lashing Abu Dhabi and other parts of the UAE, forcing a reduction in participation strength. Following the community event, the Prime Minister will be inaugurating the BAPS Mandir, the first Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi, which sits on 27 acres of land generously gifted by the UAE leadership. The Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme

Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, donated 13.5 acres of land in 2015 for the mandir's construction. The foundation stone of the temple was laid by PM Modi through video conferencing from the Dubai Opera House in 2018. Later, in May 2023, diplomats from over 30 countries visited the under-construction temple site. Modi will hold bilateral meetings with His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the UAE, and discuss ways to further deepen, expand, and strengthen the strategic partnership between the countries. In addition, he will participate in the World Government Summit 2024 as its Guest of Honour.

"BHA needs a leader who can deftly navigate bureaucracy to mount efficient responses, who has the personal skills, the Congressional connections, and the budgeting experience, to be a powerful advocate for people in need... And someone who can cultivate, nurture, and empower teams to step up and meet the moment. That describes Sonali: uniquely Sonali, unique Sonali," Power said.

SpiceJet to Cut 1400 Jobs, Aiming to Save Rs 100 Crore Annually

US inflation slows by less than expected

HiIndia Newsdesk

Budget carrier SpiceJet plans to lay off 1400 employees as part of manpower rationalisation and save about Rs 100 crore annually. The move, aimed at streamlining operations and slashing costs, comes amid ongoing legal battles and delays in fundraising, raising concerns about the airline’s future. “As part of our turnaround and cost-cutting strategy, following the recent fund infusion, we have initiated several measures, including manpower rationalisation, aimed at achieving profitable growth,” a SpiceJet spokesperson said. Wi t h a c u r r e n t w o r k f o r c e o f approximately 9,000, SpiceJet is bracing for a 10-15 per cent reduction. “A final decision on the quantum of layoffs is expected this week,” said an official familiar with the matter, hinting at potential job losses for up to 1,350 individuals across various departments. The impetus for these layoffs, sources say, is the airline’s excess manpower compared with its operational fleet size. SpiceJet currently operates only around 30 aircraft, excluding wetleased planes, leading to a surplus of staff, particularly those stationed on discontinued regional connectivity scheme (RCS) routes.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos sells shares worth over $4bn

HiIndia Newsdesk

HiIndia Newsdesk

Price increases in the US moderated last month but not as much as expected, as higher housing and food costs offset a decline in petrol prices. Annual inflation, the pace at which prices rise, was 3.1%, down from 3.4% a month earlier, the Labor Department said. Many analysts had expected inflation to fall to 2.9%. It is the latest economic reading to suggest that authorities have not got inflation fully under control. Financial markets in the US opened lower after the report, which dashed any remaining hopes that progress taming the problem might convince the US

central bank to cut rates early this year. "It looks like everything is running hotter than hoped for," said Neil Birrell, chief investment officer at Premier Miton Investors. "We are not at the stage of worrying about inflation reaccelerating, but we are not out of the woods yet either." Inflation - which measures the pace at which prices are rising - in the US took off in 2021 as a booming post-pandemic economy created shortages of supplies and strong demand, spurring many firms to put up prices. It spiked above 9.1% in June 2022, as oil prices surged on the back of the war in Ukraine. Since 2022, many supply issues have healed and demand has moderated, responding in part to the sharp rise in borrowing costs announced by the Federal Reserve.

PM Modi and UAE President Ink Bilateral Investment Treaty

Multi-billionaire Jeff Bezos has sold more of his shares in Amazon, bringing the total value of sales in recent days to more than $4bn ($3.2bn). The technology giant, which he founded in 1994, said Mr Bezos has now sold 24 million shares in the firm this month. Mr Bezos, who is Amazon's executive chair, last sold Amazon shares in 2021. Earlier this month, Amazon said he was planning to sell 50 million shares over the next year, which are worth around $8.4bn at current prices. The first sale of 12 million shares was announced in a regulatory filing on Friday, followed by a second sale of another 12 million shares, which was announced on Tuesday. Mr Bezos will not owe any taxes on his gains after moving to Miami in Florida from Seattle in the state of Washington last year. When he announced the move, it prompted speculation over whether it was because of a potential tax bill he would have faced in Washington after the state approved a new tax on large stock sales.

U19 World Cup: Musheer, Uday among four Indians in Team of the Tournament

Ishan Kishan has constantly been in the news for the past one month since he took a break midway into India's Tour of South Africa. While the BCCI was supportive of his decision to take a break, what many reports have suggested is that Ishan Kishan's lack of game-time after the Tour ended may have raised a few eyebrows. Despite Indian cricket team coach Rahul Dravid saying that Ishan Kishan needs to play some form of cricket, to make a national team comeback, Ishan Kishan has been absent from the scene. Despite the ongoing Ranji Trophy campaign, Ishan has not been competing in the premier domestic competition and rather training on his own. These have led to speculation about Ishan Kishan's future in Indian cricket. Asked if Kishan Kishan would find himself out of BCCI retainership (he has a grade C annual contract of Rs 1 crore), a senior BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity: "No discussions have taken place as of now regarding central contracts." With the ICC T20 World Cup in the Americas, starting from June 1 and India playing their opening game on June 5 in New York, the workload of India's core group of players during the IPL, which is going to be tentatively scheduled between March 22 to May 26, will be very important. "In 2023 (final) at Ahmedabad, even though we did not win the World Cup after 10 straight wins, we won hearts. I want to promise you that in 2024 (T20 World Cup) in Barbados (venue for the final), under Rohit Sharma's captaincy, ham Bharat ka jhanda gaadenge (we will hoist the Indian flag)," Shah said at the end of his speech. The Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium was on Wednesday renamed after veteran cricket administrator and former firstclass cricketer Niranjan Shah. Former India captains Anil Kumble and Sunil Gavaskar also felicitated players from Saurashtra who have achieved success in recent years.

I could write a book on Aarya

Sushmita Sen

Babil Khan reminisces about his fishing trip Nobody knew him like I did, nobody has known me like he did. It’s easy to say, to miss him, it’s easy. It’s easy to be cathartic and cry about losing him. It’s easy. Do you know what is hard? To remember the ecstasy in his voice when he would raise it in exaltation to scream “BABILUUUU!!!” every single time he’d see me. To remember then, how painful it would be to lose him for the stretches of barren time when he would be away shooting. It is impossible to bear the memory of how his beard felt on my fingers when I would scratch his cheek as he read his script or how my finger tips would rest gently on his eye lids when he took a nap. His voice, was brilliantly deep, yet it evoked nothing but a gentle prayer from me, a prayer that could only rise from one’s within when an external force has calmed your existential jitters to stillness. I wish I could have one last dance with you. “And to tell you, that without your lessons, I never would have survived.” I will look for you. I will find you again. Somewhere. Beyond.

The movie is a rom-com, and is set in Agra. The story revolves around two lovers and their crazy families. It also stars Ila Arun and the Telugu comedy legend Brahmanandam. Produced by Mach Films and Amit Bhatia, it will hit theatres on February 16.

Actress Sushmita Sen has spoken about her journey on ‘Aarya’ and shared that she could write a book on the character, describing how much it has changed and moved her. "I could write a book on Aarya, describing how much this character has changed and moved me. Trying to sum up Aarya in two lines is a tough task because this character means so much to me.” The 48-year-old actress said that the character Aarya embodies the strength and power of a woman. “In this season, you'll see her facing tough times, feeling broken, and almost giving up. There's a scene in which she’s even pointing a gun to her head; but here's the beauty: that doesn't make her any less strong. It just shows strength comes in different forms, whether you're winning or facing challenges head-on.” ‘Aarya’ is an Indian crime-thriller drama. The series started with Aarya, an independent woman who seeked to protect her family and joined a mafia gang in order to get revenge for her husband's murder. ‘Aarya Antim Vaar’ streams on Disney+ Hotstar.

According to the New York Post, the incident took place on Wednesday in the California Area School District. The unidentified parent came to the school for a parent-teacher conference when they entered the school cafeteria and tried to eat lunch with their son. California Area School District Superintendent Laura Jacob said that the parent "blatantly disregarded all directives" to the parentteacher conference room and was ultimately arrested.

The parent was charged and will be issued a no-trespass order on behalf of the district. In a statement shared on Facebook, Laura Jacob said, "The parent blatantly disregarded all directives to the parentteacher conference room and decided to

walk to the cafeteria "to have lunch" with their son. Further directives from the school principal and school police officer were challenged and the parent was escorted out of the building, handcuffed and arrested with additional police support". Ms Jacob called the incident a "breach of security" and said legal action will be taken against people who aren't following protocols. "If a parent or any other individual disregards these protocols by accessing the building unattended, it is a breach of school security, leading to arrest and legal action under trespassing laws and school safety policies," the superintendent said.

Fake Robbery By Indian Origin Gas Station Cashier In Georgia HiIndia Newsdesk

DULUTH, GA. — A purported armed robber y at a Duluth gas station unraveled into a convoluted scheme when authorities scrutinized sur vei l l ance fo ot age, re ve a ling orchestrated deception rather than genuine criminal activity. Ac c ord i n g t o s t at e m e nt s f rom authorities provided by Gwinnett County Bureau Chief Matt Johnson, Raj Patel, the cashier, and Danny Curtis, the purported robber, colluded in a failed plot to abscond with $5,000 from the establishment. Both individuals now confront felony conspiracy charges in light of these revelations. The incident purportedly transpired on January 21 at the Shell Station situated on Buford Highway and Old Peachtree Rd, as recounted by Cpl. Ted Sadowski of the Duluth Police Department. Initial police response and subsequent investigation were prompted by reports of an armed robbery. However, upon meticulous review of surveillance footage approximately a week post the purported incident, law enforcement determined the entirety of the event to

Sadowski emphasized the pivotal role played by the surveillance footage, elucidating that upon examination, authorities discerned a choreographed sequence involving a feigned assault, calculated collapse, and the orchestrated departure of the supposed robber with ill-gotten cash. Perturbingly, despite

the purported victim showing signs of revival roughly a minute subsequent to the staged altercation, nearly 30 minutes elapsed before emergency services were summoned. Body camera footage captured the exchange between responding officers and the purported victim, with the officer inquiring about the victim’s well-being, to which the

Six Texas Men Sentenced in $20M COVID-19 Relief Fraud Scheme HiIndia Newsdesk

HOUSTON, TX- Six Texas men were sentenced today for participating in a scheme to unlawfully secure over $20 million in forgivable Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans guaranteed by the Small Business Administration (SBA) under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. Hamza Abbas, 31, Ammas Uddin, 31, and Arham Uddin, 27, all residents of Richmond, received sentences of three years and eight months, one year and six months, and one year and six months in prison, respectively. Syed Ali, 55, of Sugar Land, was sentenced to two years in prison, while Muhammad Anis, 55, and Jesus Acosta Perez, 33, both of Houston, received sentences of one year and nine months, and one year and one day in prison, respectively. All six defendants had previously pleaded guilty. According to court documents, the defendants collaborated to fraudulently obtain PPP loans by providing false information about their businesses to submit fraudulent loan applications. These applications misrepresented the number of employees and average monthly payroll expenses of the businesses. Additionally, fraudulent bank records and fabricated federal tax forms were included in support of the loan applications. Abbas was also involved in recruiting others into the conspiracy and generating fake bank records used in the applications in exchange for kickbacks. Furthermore, the defendants laundered a portion of the fraudulent proceeds by issuing checks from companies that

Abbas (31), Ammas Uddin (31), Arham Uddin (27), Syed Ali (55), Muhammad Anis (55), and Jesus Acosta Perez (33) have all admitted guilt had received PPP loans to fictitious employees. These bogus paychecks were cashed at specific check-cashing businesses, one of which was owned by another co-conspirator. In January, three other individuals who had previously pleaded guilty were sentenced for their involvement in the fraud scheme. Raheel Malik, 43, of Sugar Land, was sentenced to one year and six months in prison; Nishant Patel, 41, of Houston, received a two-year prison sentence; and Harjeet Sing, 50, of Katy, was sentenced to five years of probation. In October 2023, seven additional individuals were sentenced for their roles in the loan fraud conspiracy, with the ringleader, Amir Aqeel, 55, of Houston, receiving a 15-year prison

sentence. Acting Assistant Attorney General Nicole M. Argentieri of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, along with U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani for the Southern District of Texas, and various agency officials, announced the sentences. The investigation into these cases is being conducted by several agencies, including the SBA Office of Inspector General, the Federal Housing Finance Agency Office of Inspector General, Homeland Security Investigations, the Federal Deposit Insurance C or poration Office of Inspector General, and the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration. Trial Attorneys from the Criminal Division’s Fraud Section and Assistant U.S. Attorneys from the Southern District of Texas are prosecuting these cases. Individuals with information regarding attempted COVID-19-related fraud can report it to the Justice Department’s National Center for Disaster Fraud (NCDF) Hotline or via the NCDF Web Complaint Form. The Fraud Section is leading the Criminal Division’s efforts to prosecute fraud schemes exploiting the PPP. Since the enactment of the CARES Act, the Fraud Section has prosecuted over 200 defendants in more than 130 criminal cases, seizing over $78 million in cash proceeds derived from fraudulently obtained PPP funds, as well as numerous real estate properties and luxury items purchased with such proceeds.

victim claimed to have been rendered unconscious by an assailant brandishing a weapon. Further investigation led officers to encounter Curtis near the premises, notably with a conspicuous bulge of cash protruding from his pockets. Curtis, identified as an employee of the gas station, failed to provide a plausible explanation for his possession of a substantial sum of cash. Subsequently, authorities treated the incident as an armed robbery, deploying extensive resources until the discovery and subsequent apprehension of both suspects, who allegedly colluded in the embezzlement scheme. Ad d it i on a l e v i d e n c e f rom c it y surveillance cameras purportedly captured Curtis altering his attire post the staged incident, prior to engaging with the responding officer. During subsequent interrogation by a detective, Curtis purportedly confessed to his complicity in the fabricated robbery, asserting that Patel had coached him on the specifics of the deception, including actions to undertake and items to abscond with. Sadowski, remarking on the elaborate ruse, quipped that such performances merited accolades akin to an Academy Award. Consequently, Patel currently faces an active felony warrant, while Curtis remains incarcerated in Gwinnett County Jail without bail, owing to previous run-ins with the law.

Listeria Outbreak Linked to NJ Whole Foods Cheese HiIndia Newsdesk

HiIndia Newsdesk

CHICAGO, IL — Historic reforms championed by Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas are about to take effect as property owners face a March 1 due date for 2023 First Installment tax bills. For those who are late paying their taxes due March 1, the interest rate penalty will drop from 18% a year to 9% a year. The monthly rate of interest charged on late taxes will fall from 1.5% to 0.75. “These interest rate cuts will help homeowners at a time when banks, credit card companies, mortgage lenders and others continue to charge relatively high interest rates,” Pappas said. “These lower interest rates will help those who are unable to pay their property taxes in full by the due date and who make partial payments on late taxes to spread out the burden.”

Federal health officials have issued a warning to New Jersey residents regarding a recent Listeria outbreak associated with several cheese products, including those retailed at Whole Foods Market outlets across the state. The alert stems from a recall by RizoLópez Foods, based in California, due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Listeria is a bacterium that can cause severe and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in vulnerable demographics such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems. The recalled products, distributed nationwide under various brand names, including Tio Francisco, Don Francisco, Rizo Bros, and 365 by Whole Foods Market, include whole and part-skim ricotta cheeses. As of February 6, the outbreak has affected 26 individuals across 11 states, resulting in 23 hospitalizations and two fatalities. Although no cases have been reported in New Jersey, the CDC initiated investigations in 2017 and 2021. Previous evidence implicated queso fresco and similar cheeses, prompting a reopening of the investigation in January after new illness reports in December and the

discovery of the outbreak strain in a cheese sample from Rizo-López Foods. FDA inspections at the Rizo-López Foods facility revealed the presence of the outbreak strain of Listeria on a container used for storing cheeses before packaging. While healthy individuals infected with Listeria may experience short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, the infection poses serious risks, including miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. Health officials caution that the actual number of affected individuals may be higher than reported, as not all cases are tested, and the outbreak may extend beyond states with confirmed illnesses. Consumers are advised to thoroughly check their refrigerators and freezers for the listed products and dispose of them as recommended by the FDA to mitigate the risk of infection.

Dr. Srikar Reddy, the newly appointed Counsel General of India in San Francisco, headlined the gala, which boasted an array of speeches and entertainment, including a captivating performance by a live band. President Sunil Agrawal set a unique tone for the event by spotlighting thirteen videos showcasing the impactful work of various organizations present, such as Ekal Vidyalaya, Akshaya Patra, and Saahas. This gesture was warmly received by attendees, fostering networking opportunities and potential collaborations among the showcased groups. The occasion marked a dual celebration, commemorating the 75th Republic Day of India alongside the silver jubilee of IALA. Agrawal eloquently articulated that the event symbolized IALA’s success in uniting the community, promoting diversity, and celebrating India’s advancement, rooted in the ethos of “Vasudaiva Kutumbhakam,” emphasizing the unity of humankind. Kumar Jawa, a co-founder of IALA, was honored for his visionary leadership in establishing the organization. Kanaksinh Zala, Chairman of the IALA Board, commended the organization’s

endeavors and introduced the board members to the audience. Dr. Srikar Reddy’s address highlighted India’s remarkable achievements, including its lunar exploration, hosting the G20 summit, enacting historic legislation for women’s empowerment, and its status as the world’s fastestgrowing large economy. Dignitaries such as Scott M. Schmerelson, Los Angeles Unified School District Board Member, Sean Regan from Congressman Brad Sherman’s office (D-CA, 32nd District), and Los Angeles City Councilmember John Lee were acknowledged on stage by IALA. IALA also paid tribute to “community heroes” Dr. Anil Shah, Dr. Bharat Patel, and Bharatsinh Zala, commending their outstanding contributions and unwavering commitment to societal betterment. The official proceedings were followed by a delectable meal catered by Royal Tandoor of Valencia and entertainment featuring Kathak Kala Academy, a fashion show choreographed by Shagun Gupta, and the lively tunes of the OCP group, which had guests dancing the night away. Emcees Hema Chopra and Raman Chadha, along with cultural segment anchors Falguni Zala and Hezal Shah, ensured the smooth flow of the event. The IALA executive committee, led by President Sunil Agarwal and comprising dedicated members and volunteers, played a pivotal role in the event’s success.

London: (IANS) Using popular weight loss drugs like Wegovey can make patients lose their muscle mass, AstraZeneca chief Pascal Soriot has warned. Obesity drugs including Wegovy, which mimics a hormone that tricks the body into satiety, are currently being used by hundreds of thousands of people. However, Soriot warned patients and called out companies to make the drugs to target "more fat and less muscles", the Telegraph reported. "Today you lose weight but you lose fat and you lose muscle. The problem with many of (the treatments) is when you stop, you regain weight, because obesity is a chronic disease. "Most people as soon as they stop taking the medicines, they regain fat, but not so much the muscle that they have lost unless, of course, they go to the gym,” Soriot was quoted as saying. He also asked pharma companies to "improve the quality" of weight loss drugs to make them last longer and target them more towards fat loss. This comes as a slew of studies have pointed out several risks associated with these popular drugs like Ozempic, Rybelsus and Saxenda. A study, published in JAMA, showed that the medications known as GLP-1 agonists, originally developed for managing Type-2 diabetes are associated with an increased risk of serious medical conditions including stomach paralysis, pancreatitis and bowel obstruction. Some users claimed it raise suicidal thoughts, leading the European Medicines Agency (EMA) to launch an investigation of its potential dangers. After examining about 2 million patients with type 2 diabetes or obesity, researchers at the Case Western Reserve University found no evidence to support the EMA's concern that semaglutide may cause suicidal ideations. Obesity treatments are witnessing a boom in demand, with experts expecting the industry to be worth $90bn (74bn pounds) within the coming years. Soriot noted that this huge level of demand may increase plastic packaging, and raise environmental concerns. "If you think about a billion people using one plastic pen every week, that’s a lot of plastic. All these plastic pens will become an issue at some

rivals with a new, potentially cheaper, obesity drug. The company known for its Covid vaccine, struck a deal worth up to 1.6bn pounds for an experimental pill being developed by Chinese biotech company Eccogene in November. Soriot said the plan is to create drugs which could be used in poorer countries rather than only Western nations, claiming AstraZeneca is developing "the next generation and the next wave" of obesity and diabetes treatments, the report said. He added that AstraZeneca will be combining its medicines to help with other issues related to people’s weight, such as hypertension or heart disease, the report said.

New York: (IANS) A team of scientists has developed a new ChatGPT-like generative artificial intelligence (AI) model that can design new drugs to treat disease. ChatGPT gained fame in 2023 for writing emails, cracking medical and administrative examinations as well as diagnosing patients. Inspired by ChatGPT's popularity and wondering if this approach could speed up the drug design process, scientists in the Schmid College of Science and Technology at Chapman University in California, US decided to create their own GenAI model. The platform, named "drugAI," allows users to input a target protein sequence (for instance, a protein typically involved in cancer progression). DrugAI, trained on data from the comprehensive public database BindingDB, can generate unique molecular structures from scratch, and then iteratively refine candidates, ensuring finalists exhibit strong binding affinities to respective drug targets -- crucial for the efficacy of potential drugs. The model identifies 50-100 new molecules likely to inhibit these particular proteins."This approach allows us to generate a potential drug that has never been conceived of," said Dr. Hagop Atamian from the. "It's been tested and validated. Now, we're seeing magnificent results." Researchers assessed the molecules drugAI generated along several criteria, and found drugAI's results were of similar quality to those from two other common methods, and in some cases, better. They found that drugAI's candidate drugs had a validity rate of 100 per cent -- meaning none of the drugs generated were present in the training set. DrugAI's candidate drugs were also measured for drug-likeness, or the similarity of a compound's properties to those of oral drugs, and candidate drugs were at least 42 per cent and 75 per cent higher than other models. Plus, all drugAI-generated molecules exhibited strong binding affinities to respective targets, comparable to those identified via traditional virtual screening approaches. In a different experiment, screening methods generated a list of natural products that inhibited Covid-19 proteins; drugAI generated a list of novel drugs targeting the same protein to compare their characteristics. They compared drug-likeness and binding affinity between the natural molecules and drugAI's, and found similar measurements in both -- but drugAI was able to identify these in a much quicker and less expensive way. Plus, the scientists designed the algorithm to have a flexible structure that allows future researchers to add new functions.

Meet Minita Sanghvi

– the first Openly Gay, Indian-American to be in State Senate

Minita Sanghvi is a City Council Member in Saratoga Springs, New York. She is now planning to run for State Senate in 2024 Zofeen Maqsood

B

orn and raised in India, Minita Sanghvi is charting many firsts as she navigates the American political system. Sanghvi can be called as the new-generation of Indians in America who are getting involved in the system both socially as well as politically and in her case also academically. Sanghvi who is currently serving her second two-year term as Saratoga Springs Finance Commissioner, also works as a professor in the Department of Management and Business at Skidmore College in NY. About her decision to contest the state Senate, Sanghvi maintains that America needs a leader who will put people ahead of partisan politics. She describes herself as a parent, business educator, and a public servant and emphasizes her role beyond being just a politician. Her motivations include ensuring a better future and advocating for rights and freedom for all citizens. Healthcare access for women, LGBTQ rights, and providing equal opportunities for all remain some of her top priorities. In between her busy schedule Sanghvi takes out some time to talk to Hi India about growing up in India, getting politically involved in America and coming out as a gay.

Minita Sanghvi’s run for Senate election is a welcome news for women of color, minorities and Indian Americans in the country says, “It was not easy winning in a city that's 94% white. And I was the under-dog candidate with two wellknown opponents. One who had served on the school board for 9 years and one who had deep ties in the city and deep pockets for an election. I was the under-dog candidate. But I knew that if I met people and spoke to them - they'd see my vision for our city and vote for me.

People shut doors on me, but I persisted

On Coming out Gay and Embracing the Identity

While each one of us is on a personal journey of discovering what life holds for us, often the path is marred by struggles and obstacles, especially if you are on a journey towards self-identification. Talking about her individual journey, Minita Sanghvi says, “I knew I was gay from a very young age. But growing up in India during the 80s and 90s, we didn't even talk about gay people or gay rights”

How my Activism Began

For Sanghvi, the journey to America, was full of personal dreams and aspirations, like it is for thousands of Indians who come to study or work in this land of dreams. But along the way she decided to expand her personal goals to benefit others too. She says, “My dreams and aspirations for coming to the US were just to live a regular life - get married, have a family, buy a house, a minivan and a swing set in the garden. It was pretty simple. When I came here and realized that equal rights were still a fight for LGBTQ+ folks. I got involved in advocacy and started talking to elected officials - I was involved in the fight for 2006, Prop 107 where for the first time the residents of the state defeated the proposed

same sex marriage ban.”

Journey into American Politics

After getting actively involved into social issues, Sanghvi stepped up to make a wider impact. She says, “I then worked with HRC on repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell, which included Republican Senator Richard Burr from North Carolina voting to repeal Don't Ask Don't Tell (DADT). Eventually this led to me getting involved in local politics. I served on the Human Relations Commission in North Carolina. Once I finished my PhD and moved to Upstate NY I got involved in local politics here first serving on the Charter Review Commission, then the Human Rights Task Force and eventually serving five years on the Saratoga Springs Public Library. Then when the Dem Party needed someone to run for City Council, I stepped up and won.

Being an Indian in local politics

It is remarkable to be an elected woman of color official in a not very diverse city. About her initial days, Sanghvi

I knocked over 2000 doors myself and we knocked over 7000 doors as a slate. During one of those times someone reported me as a suspicious person and called the police on me. People shut the door on my face, people saw me standing and shut the lights in the house. But I kept working away. And won the election with 4415 votes with Joanne Kiernan 3764 and Adam Israel's 547 votes. In 2023 I was unopposed in the elections

The Journey Ahead

In 2024 I am running a long-term Republican in the NYS Senate 44. He's been in elected office since 1977. That's 47 years. I know because I was born in 1977. I feel like we have had ineffective leadership for a long time. We need new ideas and a new vision for our district. I'm proposing an innovation corridor between Schenectady and Saratoga. We need to ensure we're getting infrastructure monies to rebuild our roads and bridges, we need better cellular and internet access and infrastructure. We need more climate change initiatives resulting in green jobs.

To my Fellow Indians in America

My message to minorities in America is do not wait for your children to run for office. You should run yourself. Our perspectives are needed at the table. At HRC (Human Rights Campaign) we were often told if you're not at the table, you're on the menu. Hinum pat es abunc redetimis
