US House passes bill that could ban TikTok nationwide

The US House of Representatives has passed a landmark bill that could see TikTok banned in America.

It would give the social media giant's Chinese parent company, ByteDance, six months to sell its controlling stake or the app would be blocked in the US.

While the bill passed overwhelmingly in a bipartisan vote, it still needs to clear the Senate and be signed by the president to become law. Lawmakers have long held concerns about China's influence over TikTok. TikTok is owned by Chinese company ByteDance, founded in 2012.

on his desk, which could prompt a diplomatic spat with China.

The Beijing-based firm is registered in the Cayman Islands, and has offices across Europe and the US.

If the bill does manage to secure approval in the Senate, President Joe Biden has promised to sign it as soon as it lands

US Spy Chief: China Could Use TikTok to Influence Election

Washington: China could use social media app TikTok to influence the 2024 U.S. elections, U.S. Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines told a House of Representatives intelligence committee hearing on Tuesday.

Asked by Democratic Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi if China's ruling Communist Party (CCP) would use TikTok to influence the elections, Haines said: "We cannot rule out that the CCP would use it." Krishnamoorthi is also the ranking Democrat on the House select committee on China, who along with its Republican chair Mike Gallagher, last week introduced a bill that would give TikTok's Chinese owner ByteDance about six months to divest the short video app used by 170 million Americans.

The U.S. House of Representatives is set to vote on Wednesday under fast-track rules that require twothirds of members to vote "yes" for the measure to win passage. President Joe Biden said last week he would sign the bill.

ByteDance would have to seek approval from Chinese officials to complete a forced divestiture, which Beijing has vowed to oppose. Foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said the move would "come back to bite the US".

Mike Gallagher, a Wisconsin Republican who co-authored the bill, said the

US could not "take the risk of having a dominant news platform in America controlled or owned by a company that is beholden to the Chinese Communist Party".Chinese companies are subject to a national security law requiring them to share data with the government on request. TikTok has tried to reassure regulators that it has taken steps to ensure the data of its 150 million users in the US has been walled off from ByteDance employees in China. TikTok chief executive Shou Zi Chew said the company was committed to keeping its data secure and the platform "free from outside manipulation". He warned the bill, if passed, would mean a ban on the app in the US, giving "more power to a handful of other social media companies" and putting thousands of American jobs at risk.

White House to send new $300m weapons package to Ukraine

The US will send $300m (£234m) in military weapons to Ukraine, including ammunition, rockets and anti-aircraft missiles, the White House has said. The surprise announcement comes as a bill in Congress to send further aid to Ukraine stalls amid partisan debate.

The US shipment, the first in nearly

three months, is intended to prevent Ukraine from losing ground to Russia. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said this aid "is nowhere near enough to meet Ukraine's battlefield needs".

"This ammunition will keep Ukraine's guns firing for a period, but only a short period," Mr Sullivan told reporters on Tuesday, adding that "it will not prevent Ukraine from running out of ammunition."

The White House has been appealing to Congress for months to pass a budget that sends aid to Ukraine, as well as Israel and Taiwan.

A $60bn aid bill has already passed the Senate, but has yet to face a vote in the House of Representatives.

Judge Dismisses Some Charges In Georgia Election Case Against Donald Trump

Washington: A Georgia judge on Wednesday dismissed several charges against Donald Trump and his codefendants for their alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election in the southern state.

Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee tossed out six counts in the indictment of the former president and his codefendants in Fulton County.

"This does not mean the entire indictment is dismissed," McAfee said

China says TikTok ban would 'come back to bite' the US

China has warned that a proposed ban on TikTok would "come back to bite" the US, ahead of a congressional vote that could lead to the app being banned. The bill in the House of Representatives would force the Chinese-owned app to sever ties with China or become unavailable in the US.

US officials have long expressed concern about TikTok, citing potential national security risks. TikTok's owners have repeatedly rejected that it poses any threat.

Trump vows to free US Capitol rioters if reelected

Washington: Donald Trump on Monday pledged to free people jailed for taking part in the 2021 attack on the US Capitol as one of his first actions if reelected, calling them "hostages."

The rioters -- egged on by the then-president and fueled by his false claims of voter fraud -- stormed the seat of US democracy on January 6, 2021, in a bid to halt the transfer of power to Joe Biden.

in his nine-page ruling. Trump and 18 co-defendants were indicted in Georgia in August on racketeering and various other charges. Four co-defendants, including three former Trump campaign lawyers, have pleaded guilty already to lesser charges in deals that spared them any prison time.

McAfee dismissed minor charges in the indictment facing Trump, former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows and lawyers Charles Eastman, Ray Smith and Robert Cheeley.

New land route from Israel aids UN convoy to reach north Gaza

The UN says a new land route has been used to deliver food to northern Gaza for the first time in three weeks.

The Israeli military said six lorries from the World Food Programme crossed via a gate in the Gaza border fence.

Tuesday night's delivery was "part of a pilot to prevent Hamas from taking over

the aid", it added. It comes amid global pressure on Israel to allow more access to the Palestinian territory for aid amid a looming famine as it continues its war on Hamas.

A boat carrying 200 tonnes of food aid for distribution by a charity also set sail from Cyprus on Tuesday, inaugurating a new maritime corridor into the Palestinian territory. It is expected to arrive on Thursday off Gaza's coast, where a jetty is being built.

Senior UN officials welcomed the initiative, but noted that "for aid delivery at scale there is no meaningful substitute to the many land routes and entry points from Israel into Gaza".

China backs Maldives sovereignty; Indian military personnel depart

China said on Tuesday that it supports the Maldives in safeguarding its sovereignty, as the first batch of Indian military personnel operating a helicopter left the island nation and was replaced by a civilian crew.

Indian military personnel stationed in the Maldives manning the operations of a helicopter left the country after handing over the operations of the chopper to an Indian civilian crew, the Maldivian media reported on Monday. Muizzu asked India to withdraw nearly 90 military personnel from the Maldives and India has agreed to replace the military personnel with civilians

Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said he was not aware of the specifics. “China supports Maldives in safeguarding the sovereignty and working with other countries on the basis of equality”, he said. Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, seen as a pro-China leader, has affirmed that no Indian military personnel, not even those in civilian clothing, would be present inside his country after May 10. Muizzu asked India to withdraw nearly 90 military personnel from the Maldives and India has agreed to replace the military personnel with civilians and to continue the operations of two helicopters and a Dornier aircraft provided to the country for providing humanitarian and medical evacuation services.

China says boundary issue with India does not represent entirety of bilateral ties

China on Wednesday said the SinoIndia boundary issue does not represent the entirety of the bilateral ties and called for enhancing mutual trust between the two countries to avoid misunderstanding and misjudgement. India has been maintaining that its ties with China cannot be normal unless there is peace in the border areas. Bilateral ties nosedived significantly following the fierce clash in the Galwan Valley in June 2020 that marked the most serious military conflict between the two sides in more than four decades.

Responding to questions on External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's remarks this week that the amassing of troops along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) has "not served either of us well", Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson

India has been maintaining that its ties with China cannot be normal unless there is peace in the border areas

Wang Wenbin said, the boundary issue should be placed appropriately in the bilateral ties.

Russian schoolbook urges teenagers to join the army

A new Russian school textbook has been produced that distorts the history of the war against Ukraine and encourages students to join the army. It has been designed for a new subject entitled "Fundamentals of Security and Defence of the Motherland". The lesson is compulsory for high school students aged 15 to 18 in Russia and occupied territories in Ukraine. It will be taught once a week from September, replacing a lesson known as "Fundamentals of Safe Living". Former soldiers are expected to teach the new subject and Russians with a degree in pedagogy - the method and practice of teaching - who return from the war are already being offered free retraining courses to become teachers.

While responding to a query from a Chinese diplomat at the 'Express Adda' on Monday, Jaishankar said, “I think it is in our common interest that we should not have that many forces on the LAC.

"It is in our common interest that we should observe the agreements that we have signed. And I believe that it is not just in our common interest and it is in China's interest as well.

“This tension that we have seen for the last four years has not served either of us well,” Jaishankar said.

Wang, in his reply, said both China and India believe an early settlement of the situation on the China-India border serves the common interest of the two sides.

The Islamic police in Nigeria's northern state of Kano arrested 11 Muslims on Tuesday who were seen eating food during the Ramadan fast. Kano has a majority Muslim population, where an Islamic legal system - Sharia - operates alongside secular law. The Islamic police, widely known as Hisbah, carry out searches of eateries and markets every year during Ramadan.

'Pehla Vote Modi Ko' is BJP's digital campaign

New Delhi, March 14 (IANS)

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday launched a digital campaign titled 'Pehla Vote Modi Ko' with an aim to reach out to the youth and first-time voters and win their support for the upcoming 2024 Parliamentary elections.

A dedicated web portal was launched, where first-time voters could register themselves and take a pledge for extending support to Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government for its third term.

US Parents Arrested For Raping Teen Daughter

The teen called police and told them her "father had been raping her for a least a year and a half."

A couple from Utah has been arrested after police say they thought it would be "safer" for their teenage daughter to have sexual experiences with them rather than "strangers", reported the New York Post.

KSL.com reported that the teen's stepfather and mother, both in their 30s, were booked into the Utah County Jail Thursday for investigation of forcible sexual abuse, forcible sodomy and object rape. The stepfather was also arrested for investigation of rape.

The names of the suspects were not published to protect the victim.

The teen called police and told them her "father had been raping her for a least a year and a half." The girl also revealed that her mother was aware of the sexual abuse.

According to a police booking affidavit obtained by KSL.com, the parents admitted to engaging in sexual activities with their daughter for over a year.

"(The stepfather) explained that a year ago he and the victim's mother learned that the victim wanted to meet and have sex with strangers. (He) said that together with his wife they decided that teaching the victim about sex, and engaging in sexual acts with the victim would be safer for her than having sex with strangers," the affidavit states.

Congress Claims: 2 Poll Commissioners Chosen, Only 6 Names Provided Minutes Before Meeting

New Delhi: Bureaucrats Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Gyanesh Kumar have been chosen for the two vacant posts in the top panel of Election Commission of India, Congress's leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury told the media this afternoon.

Mr Chowdhury was part of the panel chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to select two Election Commissioners to assist Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar as the poll body prepares for the upcoming Lok Sabha election. Besides the Prime Minister and Mr Chowdhury, Union Home Minister Amit Shah was on the panel.

The Congress leader hit out at the Centre over the law that replaced the Chief Justice of India by a Union Minister on the selection committee. "The Chief Justice of India should have been on this committee," he said, adding that the law brought last year had reduced the meeting to a "formality".

Congress' Adhir Chowdhury said he had given a dissent note, questioning the procedure of selection.

"The government is in the majority on the panel. What they want happens." The Congress leader said he was given 212 names for scrutiny last night. "I had asked for a shortlist so that I can examine the candidates. But I did not get that opportunity. I reached Delhi at midnight and the meeting was at noon today. I was given 212 names,

Rajnath Singh: CAA Misleading, No Citizenship Snatched

Union Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday said people are being misled over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, asserting that the legislation would not take away the citizenship of anyone living in India.

Addressing a rally in Assam's Barpeta, he said the CAA will grant citizenship to religiously persecuted people who came to India till 2014 from Pakistan,

Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

Singh was campaigning for BJP ally Asom Gana Parishad's candidate Phani Bhusan Choudhury, who is contesting the Barpeta Lok Sabha constituency, currently being represented by Congress MP Abdul Khaleque.

"The people are being misled over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act... I assure you that this Act will not take away the citizenship of any people. It would only grant citizenship," the defence minister said. The Centre on Monday implemented the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, notifying the rules four years after the law was passed by Parliament to fasttrack citizenship for undocumented non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, who came to India before December 31, 2014.

how can someone examine so many candidates in a day? Ten minutes before the meeting, I was given a shortlist of 6 names," he said.

"It was fait accompli that the chosen two will be selected. However, I tried to intervene in an appropriate manner so as to bolster the institution. That's why, before my arrival in Delhi, I sought a shortlist. They gave me a list of all candidates, numbering 212. Now you can imagine if, in a single night, it is humanly possible for me to examine 212 names and find out the most competent person among them," he said.

The Congress leader said he had given a dissent note, questioning the procedure of selection.

Mr Chowdhury also referred to Arun Goel's resignation as Election Commissioner, which has sparked a row. "When Mr Goel was appointed, the Supreme Court had made a 'lightning speed' remark. He came with a lightning speed and left with digital speed," he said.

UN Hails India Life Expectancy, Per Capita Income Rise

New Delhi: Average life expectancy in India was 67.7 years in 2022 - up from 62.7 a year earlier - and gross national income (GNI, per capita) has increased to $6951, a jump of 6.3 per cent in 12 months, the United Nation's Human Development Index, or HDI, report has said. The HDI report also indicated increases in expected years of schooling (to 12.6 per individual).

Overall, the country has a HDI score of 0.644 in 2022, which ranks it 134 of 193 in the UN's report for 2023/24 - 'Breaking the Gridlock: Reimagining Cooperation in a Polarised World'. This places it in the 'medium human development' category.

Indian-American Man's Multi-Million Dollar Scam: Private Jets, Luxury Hotels

HiIndia Newsdesk

Washington: An Indian-American has been indicted by a grand jury in a Ponzi scheme with the FBI urging victims of the investment adviser in Texas to come forward.

Siddharth Jawahar, 36, has been ordered imprisonment until sentencing by the court. The FBI on Wednesday said it is seeking potential Miamiarea victims of Jawahar who has been accused of running a multimilliondollar Ponzi scheme.

According to the indictment, from July 2016 through roughly December 2023, Jawahar took in more than USD 35 million from Swiftarc investors but spent about USD 10 million on investments in companies.

Jawahar used the money from new investors to repay older investors and to fuel an extravagant lifestyle that included flights on private planes, stays at luxury hotels and expensive

outings at lavish restaurants, the indictment says. In 2015, Jawahar began investing the majority of client funds in a single investment, Philip Morris Pakistan (PMP), the indictment says, and eventually, 99 per cent of client

funds were consolidated into the PMP investment.

Jawahar did not tell investors of a dramatic decline in the value of PMP, instead misled investors about the share price and their profits.

The indictment says Jawahar also did not tell investors when the Texas State Securities Board revoked Swiftarc Capital's authority to conduct investment activities on June 7, 2022, and ordered Jawahar to “cease from engaging in fraud”.

Jawahar continued to fraudulently solicit and receive investor funds, including USD 1 million from an investor weeks after the state board's order, the indictment says.

The wire fraud charges are each punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a USD 250,000 fine, or both.

Five countries with the best work-life balance

For anyone considering an international move, it's important to understand a country's attitudes towards work – and whether it prioritises work-life balance. Work-life balance is often seen as the key to everything from a healthy lifestyle to psychological wellbeing. So, it's little surprise that for anyone considering an international move, it's important to understand a country's attitudes towards work. To figure out which nations have the best work-life harmony, we looked at the 2023 Global Life-Work Balance Index by HRtech company Remote, which takes into account aspects such as statutory annual leave, minimum statutory sick pay percentage and amount of paid maternity leave.

New Zealand

New Zealand leads Remote's ranking, with 26 paid weeks of maternity leave, boosted by having a relatively high minimum wage, 32 days of statutory annual leave and a minimum 80% statutory sick pay percentage.

But more than any particular policy, it's the overall culture that makes work a more relaxed affair, says Erin Parry, a Canadian who lives in New Zealand and works in marketing.

"As a Canadian, you have such a 'door-die' attitude about work," she said. "I just did not know how I was going to survive that." When she visited New Zealand in 2015, it seemed to offer a different approach – one that, ever since moving there permanently the same year, has largely lived up to expectations.

Spain

Spain ranks second on the Remote index, thanks to benefits like its 26 days of statutory annual leave. According to the OECD data, meanwhile, workers in Spain devote the most hours of their day to leisure and personal care outside of any country but Italy and France. Only 2.5% work very long hours in paid employment.

That doesn't come as a surprise to Isabelle Kliger, a travel writer who has lived in Sweden, the UK, Ireland and – since 2010 – Barcelona. "In the UK and Ireland, so many people spend all their time at work, and then when they're not working, they're socialising with their colleagues," she said.

Denmark

Few people understand the benefit of Denmark's work-life balance more than Helen Russell, author of The Year of Living Danishly – and who now has lived in the country for more than a

Aries

decade.

Among other things, she says, she noticed how strict the boundary between "work" and "life" is. "The working day starts at 08:00. People normally shut their computers at 16:00," she said. Because children usually have to be picked up from nursery by around 16:00, everyone – even those without children – end their workday then. "There's really a sacred family time between, say, 16:00 and 19:00 each day, where families are together. Maybe you answer a few emails once the kids are in bed, but otherwise, you're kind of done. And it means that people without children as well are allowed to set aside their own leisure time and hobbies with the same priority that parents are afforded to their children. It's perfectly acceptable to put in your diary, 'I must go to the gym', or 'I've got badminton club'."

France

According to OECD data, people in France have 16.2 hours per day for personal and leisure time, second only to Italy. On the Remote list for work-life balance, the country ranks third overall – with one of the highest number of days for statutory annual leave (36), in particular.

Indeed, even in a busy city like Paris, says Sarah Micho, a Canadian entrepreneur and freelancer who moved to the capital in 2021, locals prioritise non-work time. "French culture promotes a sense of relaxation and rest," she said. Cafe culture is one example: it's common to see people sitting and relaxing outside at any hour of the day, she says, particularly when the weather is nice – and not just with friends or colleagues, but having a leisurely coffee alone, too.

FBI Reports Scammers Raked In $160 Million From Tennesseans In 2023

KNOXVILLE, TN—Tennessee residents fell victim to Internet scammers to the tune of over $160 million last year, according to a newly released report from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). This alarming figure underscores the urgent need for enhanced cybersecurity measures throughout the Volunteer State.

In 2023, Tennessee ranked 31st nationwide, with residents filing a total of 8,484 complaints with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), resulting in reported losses exceeding $161 million. These statistics highlight the profound impact of cybercrime on individuals and businesses across the state. Joseph Carrico, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Knoxville Field Office, emphasized the ongoing

NYC Intensifies Crackdown On ‘Ghost Cars’ Sporting Bogus Plates

NEW YORK, NY- Mayor Eric Adams and Gov. Kathy Hochul announced a crackdown on vehicles sporting forged, altered, or otherwise fraudulent plates, revealing that enforcement efforts had already commenced the day prior. This initiative resulted in the impoundment of 73 vehicles, issuance of 282 summonses, and the apprehension of eight individuals.

According to Adams, these deceptive “ghost” vehicles pose significant risks beyond toll evasion, as they can be exploited for criminal activities due to their untraceable nature. He emphasized that this proactive measure aims to intercept potential threats before they materialize. The operation, launched on Monday, involved collaborative efforts from the NYPD, city sheriffs, MTA bridge and tunnel officers, state police, and Port Authority officers. Focus areas included the RFK Bridge, the George Washington Bridge, and the Lincoln Tunnel.

The joint city-state task force is dedicated to purging city streets of vehicles bearing fake or tampered plates, or lacking proper registration tags, as outlined by officials.

Apart from concerns regarding criminal activities highlighted by Adams, MTA officials have voiced financial implications, estimating toll evasion to cost the transit agency approximately $50 million annually.

threat of cybercrime in Tennessee, urging vigilance and proactive steps to safeguard against online threats.

He emphasized the evolving tactics of cybercriminals and the importance of staying informed and protected.

Leading categories for losses in Tennessee include tech support scams, investment fraud, and business email compromise (BEC), with older individuals being particularly vulnerable to these schemes.

Nationally, the IC3 recorded a staggering

880,418 complaints in 2023, indicating a significant surge in cybercrime activities across the country. Total losses surpassed $12.5 billion, reflecting the severity of the cyber threat landscape. Jason Jarnagin, supervisory special agent overseeing the FBI’s cybercrime squad in Knoxville, outlined key measures for online protection, including the use of strong, unique passwords, caution regarding suspicious emails, and regular software updates and antivirus software usage.

The FBI remains dedicated to collaborating with local law enforcement agencies and community partners to mitigate cyber risks and safeguard Tennesseans against attacks. Businesses impacted by cyberattacks are urged to contact their local FBI office promptly for assistance.

CDPH Launches Initiative To Combat Alzheimer’s Disease

SACRAMENTO, CA – The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has launched the ‘Take on Alzheimer’s’ campaign, aimed at educating and raising awareness among all Californians about promoting healthy brains and distinguishing between aging and dementia. The campaign seeks to facilitate conversations with loved ones and healthcare providers.

Dr. Tomás J. Aragón, Director of CDPH, highlighted the urgency of the campaign, stating, “With the projected doubling of Californians living with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRDs) in the next 20 years, this initiative empowers diverse communities to prioritize brain health, recognize signs of aging versus dementia, and initiate crucial conversations.”

The Take On Alzheimer’s campaign

addresses the barriers preventing many Californians from seeking help for Alzheimer’s, including lack of awareness, fear, and stigma. Given that age is the primary risk factor for Alzheimer’s, California, with its significant elderly population, emphasizes the critical need for awareness, education, and preparedness.

Aligned with California’s Master Plan for Aging, the campaign stresses the integration of dementia expertise into programs and services catering to the diverse older adult population. Notably, women are disproportionately affected by Alzheimer’s, underlining the campaign’s emphasis on inclusive outreach. The Take on Alzheimer’s campaign aims to educate communities on brain health, signs of aging, and ADRD symptoms, promoting early detection and diagnosis to make positive differences.

Governor Newsom and the state legislature have allocated funding for CDPH and the Alzheimer’s Disease Program, supporting initiatives such as the California Healthy Brain Initiative and research grants.

Cory Booker Invites Indian American Fertility Advocate to State of the Union

Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey has chosen Roshni Kamta, a Jersey City native, as his guest for the State of the Union address. Kamta's battle with stage 2 breast cancer at 22 led her to freeze her eggs, sparking her advocacy for wider access to fertility treatments, especially for breast cancer patients and women of color in healthcare.

Facing chemotherapy that could affect her future fertility, Kamta struggled to finance the costly egg freezing procedure, not covered by her insurance. However, she received a grant from The Chick Mission, a nonprofit supporting young cancer patients in preserving fertility. This organization offers financial aid, educational programs, and advocates for state policies mandating fertility treatment coverage for cancer patients. Booker highlighted the importance

California Democratic Incumbents Win Primaries, Advance to November Ballot

SACRAMENTO, CA – In the March 5 primaries, incumbent California Democrats Ami Bera (CA-6) and Ro Khanna (CA-17) secured resounding victories, positioning themselves for their respective bids for re-election. Bera, seeking his 7th term, will contend against Republican Christine Bish, while Khanna, eyeing his 5th term, will face off against Christine Chen in the upcoming November general elections. Meanwhile, Rep. Eric Swalwell (CA-14) faced a spirited challenge as Vinay ‘Vin’ Kruttiventi emerged as his primary opponent. NAPCA: Medicare Coverage To End On March 31st

What is the difference between GEP (General Enrollment Period) and MAOEP (Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period)?

GEP and MA OEP take place annually during the same time window but are distinct periods related to Medicare, and they serve different purposes.

GEP is for individuals who were first eligible for Medicare but didn’t enroll in Medicare Part A and/or Part B during their Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) and who aren’t eligible for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP). For example, if you delayed initial enrollment when you were first eligible for Medicare due to having current job-based health insurance, and later, when you retire or you are no longer covered by your employer insurance, you may be eligible to have 8-months SEP. If you missed the SEP, you should use GEP to enroll in Medicare. Note that MA OEP is specifically only for individuals who are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C, MA plan) and want to make changes.

What can I do during GEP (General

Enrollment Period)?

During GEP, individuals can enroll in Medicare Part A and/or Part B for the first time. Coverage will begin on the first day of the following month after you enroll, and you may face a late enrollment penalty because you missed your Initial Enrollment Period. The penalty could result in higher premiums for as long as you have Medicare. Note that you may not sign up for a standalone Medicare Part D prescription drug plan during GEP even if you need drug coverage with Original Medicare as drug coverage is not included. The GEP is specifically for enrolling in Medicare Part A and/or Part B, not for Part D. To have a stand-alone Part D plan, you may have to wait for the upcoming Medicare Open Enrollment Period that occurs between October 15 and December 7 every year.

What can I do during MA OEP (Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period)?

As mentioned in <1>, MA OEP is only for those who already are enrolled in MA plan. You can switch from one MA plan to another,

or you can disenroll from your Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare (Part A and Part B). If you return to Original Medicare, you have the option to enroll in a stand-alone Medicare Part D prescription drug plan. Note that MA OEP does not apply to Original Medicare beneficiaries, that means you cannot switch from Original Medicare to MA plan, you cannot join a part D prescription drug plan or cannot switch one part D plan to another if you’re in Original Medicare. Can I add a Medigap plan to Original Medicare during GEP or MA OEP?

Medicare basically covers 80% of the cost for each Medicare-covered service or item after you’ve paid your deductible. If you decide to stay with Original Medicare (Part A and B) and want to cover the 20% financial gap that Medicare doesn’t pay for, you may want to add a Medigap plan to your Original Medicare. Ideally, the best time to purchase a Medigap policy is during your Medigap OEP, which starts the first day of the month that you’re both 65 or older AND enrolled

in Medicare Part B. This period lasts for six months. During this period, Medigap companies must sell you a policy at the best available rate regardless of your health status, and they cannot deny you coverage. If you miss your Medigap Open Enrollment Period, you can still apply for a Medigap policy, but you may face underwriting which insurers use to figure out your health status and determine whether to offer you coverage, at what price, and with what exclusions or limits. Based on your pre-existing health conditions, you may have to have a waiting period or insurers may charge you more or deny coverage based on pre-existing conditions. Be aware that this information only pertains to protections that apply nationwide. Some states have other protections that give their residents additional opportunities to enroll in a Medigap. The flu season in the US, this year, has claimed more than a hundred children's lives, according to latest estimates from the country's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The US has recently been facing a tripledemic of flu, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and Covid-19 infections. While RSV and Covid cases have come down, flu cases are still rising.

“Seasonal influenza activity remains elevated and is increasing in some areas of the country. Covid-19 activity is decreasing in many areas of the country. RSV activity is decreasing in all areas of the country,” the CDC said in its weekly FluView update.

H1N1 strain (Swine flu) was the most reported influenza virus, followed by H3N2. About 10 kids died in the period between December and March, and raised the season's total to 103, the CDC said.

Of the 10, six died due to influenza A (H1N1 and H3N2 strain), four due to influenza B.

According to experts, lack of vaccination, and mistaking it for another cold virus are the major reasons for flu deaths among kids. Data shows that just over 50 per cent

Indian researchers & doctors driving global healthcare studies: Experts

India is leading in healthcare studies, with most content coming from the country's researchers and doctors, according to experts.

Indian healthcare space with a $372 billion market is one of the largest worldwide, and is expected to go even further with more research and innovation coming from the country, Professor John Adler, Founder of Cureus and Venkatesh Sarvasiddhi, MD, Springer Nature India Private Limited told IANS at an event held in the national capital on Thursday.

"All the research going on in India shows that the future of medicine is bright here," John Adler said at Cureus India Medical Science & Publishing Symposium: Innovating for Tomorrow.

"What I think is a new revolution in healthcare happening here, especially low-cost healthcare, which is something the rest of the world needs to learn and Cureus is the vehicle to tell those stories," he added.

Cureus is an online platform that utilises crowdsourcing to share and promote medical knowledge worldwide, without

paywalls. Venkatesh Sarvasiddhi, MD, Springer Nature India told IANS that it is important to empowering young researchers, and doctors to publish more research.

"If I look into our global numbers, we have 18,000 articles published every year on our platform and more than 4,000 articles come from India alone, which is close to 20 to 23 per cent of articles coming from Indian researchers and doctors," he added.

During his recent G20 address, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya also highlighted the significance of research and development in healthcare

advancement. He mentioned India's efforts to foster an innovative environment in the sector, transitioning from volume-based approaches to value-based leadership models. "India is not only a powerhouse in medicine today, but it is going to be increasingly so over the coming decades. And there is lots of innovation happening in all different corners of medicine. It is not predictable where your next great breakthrough is going to come. It is not necessarily the big hospitals of the world. It is oftentimes the very humble locations where several observations lead to the next revolution," John said.

of children took the flu vaccination this year.

“There is a popular misconception among families that flu is just another cold virus, and that it’s no big deal,” Dr Kristina Bryant, a paediatric infectious disease physician at Norton Healthcare in Louisville, Kentucky, was quoted as saying by NBC news. The contagious respiratory illness that infects the nose, and throat, affects children badly. It raises the risk of compromising breathing as the kids have smaller airways. As the virus spreads and inflames the airways, breathing becomes difficult, increasing the risk of hospitalisation and death.

The CDC recommends annual flu shots for everyone six months and older, which can halve the risk of hospitalisation and even curb the risk of death.

US records over 100 pediatric deaths from flu this season

Los Angeles, March 9 (IANS) More than 100 flu-associated pediatric deaths have been reported in the US so far this season, according to data released by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Seasonal influenza activity remains elevated nationally with increases in some parts of the country, Xinhua news agency reported. The CDC estimates that there have been at least 28 million illnesses, 310,000 hospitalisations, and 20,000 deaths from flu so far this season. More than 10,000 patients were admitted to hospitals with flu in the latest week ending March 2, according to the CDC.The CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older get an annual flu vaccine as long as influenza viruses are spreading.

Why women are thrice more at risk of migraines than men

Changes in hormones may explain why migraines are three times more common among women than men, said experts here on Sunday. Migraine is a severe headache that starts usually on one side but can be bilateral, and associated with a pulsating or a throbbing quality. It is accompanied by nausea or vomiting, and is also associated with the irritability to sound and noise and it worsens by doing routine activity.

It can be accompanied by difficulty in concentration and it is a usually long-lasting headache - for more than four hours and can last up to 72 hours. "Migraine is a very common headache and affects

about 15 per cent of the population. People with migraine have significant family history of migraine and is accompanied by worsening during menstrual periods. The ratio of females to male is three times to one,” Dr Praveen Gupta, Principal Director, Department of Neurology, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, told IANS.

"This is because of the cyclical change in the hormones of the body. Female sex hormones known as oestrogen is the main culprit for causing migraines," said Dr Sumit Singh, Director - Neurology at Artemis Hospitals.

Tina Singh On Creating The FirstEver Helmet For Sikh Boys

For years, Canada based occupational therapist Tina Singh struggled to find a helmet that promised safety and comfort for Sikh boys wearing a patka. This led her to conceptualize and create – Bold Helmets – a revolutionary brand catered to Sikh boys who wear their religious obligations.

“Necessity is the mother of invention,” and this couldn’t have been truer for occupation therapist Tina Singh who invented Bold Helmets – a first ever concept that designs helmets meant for Sikh boys who wear their hair in a patka or a small turban that Sikh boys wear to cover their long hair. As a mom to three young boys who proudly wear their religious obligation, Tina often found it challenging to fit the traditional bike helmet on to her sons when they first started learning to ride the bike. As an occupational therapist she also understood the importance of safety gear like a good helmet to shield the head while biking, driving or engaging in other active sports.

Singh’s chance confrontation with her own challenges led her to think that for far too long no one catered to the needs of young boys wearing a patka. Interestingly, there was nothing available in the market that could cater to this very important need of little Sikh boys who would be taking their first steps towards riding a bike without a helmet that suitably met their needs or promised them both safety and comfort. This led to the conceptualization of – Bold Helmets – a first ever South Asian-origin brand that can cater to the needs of Sikh kids not just in North America but across the world.

Tina Singh spoke to Hi India about creating this unique brand and how was it to bring about a brand new product

Hi India: Tell us something about your family. When did your family move to North America and your professional life before you created Bold Helmets?

Tina Singh: I am a mom of three kids. Both my husband and I were born and brought up in Canada. I was born in Scarborough and my husband was born in Milton, both in Ontario Canada. We had all three of our kids here. My earliest memories are of growing up in the mid 80’s in Canada. About my life before Bold Helmets, I was an occupational therapist and I have been working in the field of brain and head injury for many, many years. After my kids were born and they were very young, I started doing digital content creation about my life and my life’s journey on social media on YouTube and that’s how I built an online audience. I did that for seven years.

Hi India: Tell us about Bold Helmets, the idea, the concept… everything?

Tina Singh: So, many years ago I had this idea which then became Bold Helmets. I executed it maybe just three years ago. It took us many years of development to get where we are today. We just launched our first product in January 2023. About the

conceptualization behind it. When my kids were younger, the older in particular, he was a very active kid. He was on his bike with training wheels when he was three-years-old and so he was really quick with learning all these things. Now, of course as an occupational therapist who worked in head and brain injury I wanted my kids to wear helmets when they did all these things. So, I didn’t want to stop them, I wanted them to be able to participate in all the things they were doing but I am very particular when it comes to safety gear. So, when I saw that there wasn’t an option available for my kids, that’s when the idea of Bold Helmets was born. It is a new concept. It would surprise you that it hasn’t been thought of before with so many Sikh kids around the globe riding on bikes every day. So, yes, it is a new concept in that sense. It is a safety certified product. I don’t think I am the first person who had a problem with the helmet, I may be the first person who decided to take on the project. But I know in talking to many parents, some of whose kids are much older now, tell me that they had such a

problem with the products available when their kids were younger. They did things like cut holes in helmets… so this was a problem and people were modifying what they could but I guess I was just the first one to take that forward and create a product.

Hi India: Were there any challenges you faced in manufacturing and then marketing the product?

Tina Singh: So, the only challenges I would say I faced were in learning about how to do that. I am in health care and as an occupational therapist I had never known how to manufacture or market the product so it was a learning curve. Thankfully, I was able to call on help friends who were in the supply chain and I could lean on for help. But the challenge was mainly learning how to do it all.

Hi India: Any special anecdotes you want to share about the product or the journey towards it?

Tina Singh: It would be seeing the first product we created. The first time it landed on my doorstep I was so nervous to even open it. I was so worried, it wasn’t

going to fit well or work well. Creating it has been a very expensive process so when that prototype landed on my door many years ago, my husband was excited and he was like open it, let us try it, while I was like, oh we need to do this right now, let us do it later. I guess, I have never shared before that I was nervous to open the box because I was just worried that it wouldn’t work the way I wanted it to work. And that’s what developing products go, sometimes it takes many iterations to get it right. And I was very lucky that we were very close to the product we have today even with the very first prototype.

Hi India: Let’s talk about finances. Did you have a capital ready to embark on this business journey? How did that process go?

Tina Singh: So, because I started this project many years ago, I actually went through it really slowly. We have selffunded the product so there are no outside investments for our business today. That may change someday because it is a very expensive space to be in. But starting it, I didn’t take on any investment and kept it slow. In between the process, Covid hit and things were going slow too.

Hi India: How was the product received, where all it is available and what price points you kept in mind while launching it?

Tina Singh: The final product was really well-received. I would say it was 99 percent received positively across the media. There would always be that small percentage of people who wouldn’t like your product so they didn’t like our name – we originally started as Sikh helmets, so there were some people who didn’t like the name. So, we as a business decided to change our name and it worked out to be better. So, at that moment it seemed really challenging as we had a branding and everything was ready with that name but now I am glad we did it. The product is currently available on our website www. boldhelmets.com. We have a price point of CAD 79.99 per unit and we have small and medium size. We have a size guide on our website to help you how to exactly measure the right fit for your kid. We currently ship to Canada, US and UK. We also ship to Thailand, Germany, Sweden and are working on expanding it. There are a few select shops in Canada that do carry our product.
