Pitroda stirred the latest controversy while describing India’s diversity in a podcast. “People in the east look like the Chinese, people in the west look like the Arabs, people in the north look like, maybe, White and people in the south look like Africans,” Pitroda said in the podcast, adding: “It does not matter. All of us are brothers and sisters.”

Stormy Daniels
Testifies: 2006
Encounter with Trump
New York: Stormy Daniels, the porn star at the heart of Donald Trump's hush money case, testified in a rapt Manhattan courtroom Tuesday about a 2006 sexual encounter that precipitated the criminal trial of the former US president.
Trump, 77, is charged with falsifying business records to reimburse his lawyer, Michael Cohen, for a $130,000 payment made to Daniels to silence her on the eve of his 2016 election against Hillary Clinton, when the lurid story of marital infidelity could have sunk his campaign.
President Joe Biden has warned Israel that the US will stop supplying some weapons if it launches a major ground operation in the Gaza city of Rafah.
"If they go into Rafah, I'm not supplying the weapons that have been used historically to deal with Rafah," he said during an interview with CNN.
He added that he would "continue to make sure Israel is secure".
Despite firm and vocal US opposition, Israel appears poised to mount a largescale invasion of Rafah. The congested
part of southern Gaza is Hamas's last major stronghold in the territory. US officials have warned that an operation in the city - where the population has swelled with refugees from other parts of Gaza - could lead to extensive civilian casualties. "We're not going to supply the weapons and artillery shells," Mr Biden said in the interview, which will air later on Wednesday.
He said the US did not define the current situation in Rafah as a ground operation. "They haven't gone into the population centres. What they did is right on the border," he said.
US House votes to kill motion to remove Speaker Mike Johnson
Washington: (IANS) The US House of Representatives has overwhelmingly voted to kill a resolution to remove House Speaker Mike Johnson.
The House on Wednesday voted 35943 on a motion by Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia to oust Johnson from his post, with seven Democrats voting "present", Xinhua news agency reported.
Greene called up her resolution to remove fellow Republican and House Speaker Johnson on the House floor Wednesday evening. But House Majority
Steve Scalise, a Louisiana Republican, immediately motioned to table the measure.
"A remarkable number of House Republicans joined with Democrats to rescue the speaker, who has only been in the job for a little over six months," reported The Washington Post, adding that Johnson earned grudging respect from more traditional Republicans for ensuring the government didn't run out of funding and sending aid to US allies and Israel and Ukraine, but he only did so with Democratic support, infuriating members like Greene.
Trump Plans To Send "Kill Squads" To Take Out Mexican Cartel Heads: Report
HiIndia Newsdesk
If re-elected, former US president Donald Trump has vowed to send "assassination squads" of US special forces into Mexico to take out the heads of drug cartels, according to a report. The Republican presidential nominee told three of his allies that the American military has “tougher killers” that can be used to "wage war" on Mexico's drug cartels amid the US's growing fentanyl crisis, according to a report by Rolling Stone. The former president pitched for a hit similar to the killing of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi by the US military in 2019. Talking to his close allies, Trump floated the idea of deploying special operation units that would carry out assassinations in Mexico's most notorious drug cartels - with or without the consent of its

Miss USA Resigns for Mental Health Reasons
Reigning Miss USA Noelia Voigt has resigned her title, citing mental health challenges.
Ms Voigt, who won the annual competition in September, said she believed in making decisions "that feel best for you and your mental health".
"Never compromise your physical and mental wellbeing," she wrote on Instagram. "Our health is our wealth."
The Miss USA organisation said it supported her decision and would announce a successor.
Trump's Media Company Changes Auditor Amid Fraud Charges
Washington: Former U.S. President Donald Trump's media and technology company said it had replaced its auditor, BF Borgers, after the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) charged the accounting firm with "massive fraud" on Friday.
capture. In these discussions, the former US president also wondered why similar hits have not been carried out by the US government before, claiming that getting rid of the heads of cartels would strike fear into the hearts of “the kingpins" and dismantle their drug operations. Trump has publicly vowed to “make appropriate use of Special Forces, cyber warfare, and other overt and covert actions to inflict maximum damage on cartel leadership, infrastructure, and operations" if he returns to the White House. The 77-year-old Republican frontrunner has not, however, revealed details of his plans including how many such squads or troops he would be willing to send to Mexico and the level of cooperation with the Mexican government.
Trump Media & Technology Group said in a filing with the SEC on Monday that it had switched to Semple, Marchal & Cooper on Saturday. The change was recommended and approved by the company's audit committee.
Borgers, the auditor of the Truth Social parent since 2022, agreed to a $12 million civil penalty and to discontinue practicing as accountants on SEC filings, the agency said. Trump Media is looking forward to working with its new auditing partners following the SEC's decision, a spokesperson for the company said in an emailed statement on Friday.

AstraZeneca has initiated a global withdrawal of its COVID-19 vaccine, days after it was reported that the British pharmaceutical company admitted that the jab can cause rare side effects. The vaccine maker has said the worldwide withdrawal was
Battles in East Rafah; Kerem Shalom Crossing Reopens
There has been fighting and bombardment on the outskirts of the southern Gaza city of Rafah, as Israel said the Kerem Shalom crossing had reopened for aid. Earlier, the military said lorries had reached Kerem Shalom, a key aid route closed after a rocket attack on Sunday.
Over 1/3rd of Australians facing financial difficulties: Survey
Canberra: (IANS) More than onethird of Australians are finding it difficult to get by on their current incomes, a survey has found.
On Wednesday, researchers from the Australian National University (ANU) published the results of the latest edition of ANUPoll, which has been tracking the views of Australians since 2008, Xinhua news agency reported. It found that as of January, 34.2 per cent of more than 4,000 respondents were finding it difficult or very difficult to get by on their current income. Nicholas Biddle, lead author of the report and head of the School of Politics and International Relations at ANU, said in a media statement that it was the highest rate of financial stress measured by the survey since February 2020.
The company voluntarily withdrew its "marketing authorisation", adding that the vaccine was no longer being produced and could no longer be used.
initiated because of commercial reasons due to a "surplus of available updated vaccines" for COVID-19, The Telegraph reported. The vaccine was superseded by updated vaccines that tackle new variants, AstraZeneca said.
The company voluntarily withdrew its “marketing authorisation” in the European Union, adding that the vaccine was no longer being produced and could no longer be used. Similar withdrawals will be made across other countries that have been using the vaccine.
The pharmaceutical giant is facing a 100 million pound lawsuit in UK over claims that the Covid jab caused deaths and injuries to several people. AstraZeneca admitted in one of the court documents in February that Covishield can "in very rare cases, cause TTS or Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome".TTS causes blood clots and a low blood platelet count in humans and has been linked to at least 81 deaths in the UK. However, the vaccine maker has denied that the decision to withdraw Covishield is linked to the court case.
Ukraine Warns Of Outages After "Massive" Attack On Power Plants
Kyiv: Ukraine on Wednesday warned of possible power shutdowns across the country after a "massive" wave of Russian missiles and drones targeted the country's battered energy system. Moscow also said its forces had taken control of two more frontline villages, as it ups its attacks both on land and from the skies with Ukrainian troops
struggling to hold the front line more than two years into the war.
"On the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in World War II, Nazi (President Vladimir) Putin launched a massive missile attack on Ukraine," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said.
The intensified strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure triggered fresh warnings of blackouts and electricity rationing. "There may be power cuts for household and industrial consumers across Ukraine... due to new damage to the equipment of Ukrainian power plants caused by Russian strikes," power operator Ukrenergo said.Russia's defence ministry said its strikes were in retaliation.
Britain's Defence Ministry Hit By Cyberattack, Ex-Minister Targets China
London: Britain's defence ministry has been the target of a large-scale cyberattack, a government minister confirmed on Monday. Work and Pensions Minister Mel Stride said the attack was on a system run by an outside firm but was still a "very significant matter".
Tobias Ellwood, a former minister in the Conservative government, said the attack had targeted a third-party payroll system used by the Ministry of Defence

Kenya's President William Ruto has declared on Friday a public holiday to mourn the 238 people who have died due to ongoing flooding.
The president on Wednesday said the day will be observed by national tree planting activities to help mitigate the effects of climate change.
Kenya, along with other parts of East Africa, have been overwhelmed by floods. More than 235,000 people are displaced and living in dozens of camps.

"Targeting the names of the payroll system and service personnel's bank details, this does point to China because it can be as part of a plan, a strategy to see who might be coerced," the ex-soldier and former chairman of a parliamentary defence committee, told BBC Radio.
The data breach is believed to have included the names, bank details and in some cases personal addresses of serving and former armed forces members.
Stride told Sky News the Ministry of Defence acted "very swiftly" to take the database offline.
But, he said, the government was not currently pointing the finger at Beijing. "That is an assumption.... we are not saying that at this precise moment," he added.
Defence Secretary Grant Shapps will give further details to the parliament later in the day.
Un has expressed "firm support and solidarity" for Russia in his congratulatory message to Russian President Vladimir Putin over VictoryDay, which marks the 79th anniversary of the end of World War Two, state news KCNA agency said on Thursday. Russia on Thursday marks the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany in World War Two as relations with the West spiral deeper into crisis over the advance of Russian troops against Ukraine's Western-backed forces.
"I express firm support and solidarity with the sacred cause of Russia, hoping that you and the brave Russian army and people would win fresh victoryin the struggle to defeat the imperialists' hegemonic policy," Kim said in his letter to Putin according to KCNA.

PM Counters Rahul Gandhi on "Ambani, Adani"
"For five years, Congress's shehzade kept chanting one thing. After his Rafael issue got grounded, he started a new chant. Five industrialists, five industrialists, five industrialists. Gradually, he started saying Ambani-Adani. But ever since the elections were announced, he stopped abusing Ambani and Adani. Today, I want to ask from Telangana soil, he must declare how much money they have taken from Ambani, Adani? Was there a deal? Why did you stop abusing Ambani and Adani overnight? Zaroor daal mein kucchh kaala hai (something is wrong). You abused them for five years and then it stopped overnight?" the Prime Minister said at a rally in Telangana.

New Delhi: Nearly a week before the dispute between a section of Air India Express employees and the management boiled over, leading to the cancellation of over 90 flights since Tuesday night, the Regional Labour Commissioner had written to the airline and - in no uncertain terms - told them the grievances were genuine and that the HR department had made an attempt to mislead the conciliation officer.

India's 2024 Lok Sabha Election
In the lead-up to India's recent election, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared the stage with social media luminaries like BeerBiceps and Curly Tales at an awards event in Delhi. This gathering underscored the burgeoning influence wielded by online personalities, now pivotal in reaching diverse voter demographics. While some laud social media for democratizing information sharing, others highlight darker implications, where truth can be sidelined for monetary gain.
A decade ago, the term "influencer" was scarce, but now it's a thriving profession, according to Vinay Deshpande of Rajneethi. Some influencers earn substantial sums— up to 500,000 rupees per post— compelling enough to sway political fortunes. Deshpande cites instances where influencers helped opposition candidates secure victories by disseminating tailored content. Social media's potency in shaping public opinion is evident. Preethi Aggarwal and countless others turn to platforms like Instagram and YouTube for digestible news coverage. However, the credibility of information disseminated by influencers is questioned. Some influencers admit to political pressures, declining offers
that compromise their editorial autonomy.
Joyojeet Pal of the University of Michigan highlights concerns about managed interviews and biased content. Research indicates a decline in critical content against the incumbent government, suggesting a chilling effect on dissent—a worrying trend for democracy. Some
influencers who challenge the status quo operate anonymously, fearing repercussions. Opposition parties facing alleged media bias leverage influencers to connect with voters. Supriya Srinate of the Congress party contends that influencers circumvent financial constraints and biased mainstream media. Ankit Lal of the Aam Aadmi Party acknowledges influencers' role in democratizing publicity.
Akash Banerjee, running The DeshBhakt on YouTube, extols influencers' ability to challenge boundaries. Notably, Dhruv Rathee's video questioning India's drift towards dictatorship garnered widespread attention, stimulating vital conversations.
Despite these contributions, concerns persist. Freedom of speech in India faces scrutiny, with instances of censorship and intimidation. Some influencers tread cautiously to avoid backlash. Nevertheless, influencers remain integral in informing public discourse and mobilizing voters. In essence, while influencers offer diverse perspectives and foster political engagement, their efficacy hinges on their ability to uphold journalistic integrity and resist external pressures. As gatekeepers of information, they play a vital role in safeguarding democratic values and empowering citizens to make informed decisions at the ballot box.

New Delhi: Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini today gave a cryptic message amid a potential crisis in the BJP government after three independent MLAs announced they have withdrawn support to the BJP government.
The three MLAs - Sombir Sangwan, Randhir Gollen and Dharampal Gonder - claimed the Haryana government is in a minority now and the state elections should be held soon. They said they will support the Congress in the election.
Mr Saini, however, dismissed the situation as nothing alarming.
"When I heard about it, I knew that moment the Congress is trying to fulfil
their wishes. Everyone has a wish," Mr Saini said.
"But the people know. They know the Congress has got nothing to do with the wishes of people, but only with fulfilling their personal wishes," he said.

Supreme Court: Kejriwal Not to Perform Duties if Granted Bail
The Supreme Court said on Tuesday it doesn't want Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to discharge his official duties if he is released on interim bail in the money laundering case linked to the
alleged excise policy scam as it would lead to a conflict of interest. Kejriwal failed to get any relief from the top court, with a two-judge bench rising without pronouncing an order granting him interim bail to enable him to campaign in the Lok Sabha elections.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader was arrested on March 21 and is currently lodged in Tihar Jail under judicial custody.
A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta, which reserved its verdict on the question of interim bail, said allowing Kejriwal to attend his office may have a "cascading effect".
India Criticizes Canada for Khalistani Floats, Denounces Violence glorification
India on Tuesday again hit out at Canada over a parade by Ontario Gurdwara Committee that raised separatist slogans and floats, including an offensive one against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging Ottawa to "stop providing criminal and secessionist elements a safe haven".
The latest reminder comes barely a week after New Delhi summoned Canada's Deputy High Commissioner over the Khalistan slogans raised at an event attended by their Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The three MLAs - Sombir Sangwan, Randhir Gollen and Dharampal Gonder - claimed the Haryana government is in a minority now and the state elections should be held soon. They said they will support the Congress in the election
the BJP plans to counter this new threat. Congress leader and former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said the BJP has no right to continue in power in Haryana as the government is in minority now.
"Keeping in mind the sentiments of the public, the MLAs supported the Congress, thanks to all the three independents," Mr Hooda told reporters.
Prajwal Revanna Misses Return Deadline
A Blue Corner notice issued by Interpol helps countries collect and share information regarding a person's location and their activities as part of a criminal investigation
The seven days’ time sought by Hassan’s NDA Lok Sabha candidate Prajwal Revanna to appear before the Special Investigation Team probing sexual abuse allegations against him ended on Tuesday but there was no sign of his return from abroad. The 33-yearold JD(S) MP and grandson of former prime minister H D Deve Gowda flew to Germany as soon as news spread that the Karnataka State Commission for Women Nagalakshmi Chowdhary had written to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah seeking a probe into the explicit videos of Prajwal allegedly sexually abusing several women. A lookout notice for Prajwal has been issued at all airports in India, along with a Blue Corner notice. Stop providing safe haven to criminal & secessionist elements:
New Delhi, May 7 (IANS) India on Tuesday reacted strongly to proKhalistani elements taking the centre stage, raising anti-India slogans, and displaying objectionable posters against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a 'Nagar Kirtan' organised at Malton in Canada, urging the government led by Justin Trudeau to stop providing criminal and secessionist elements a safe haven and political space in the country.
India tells Canada
The parade organised on Monday from Malton to Rexdale in Ontario witnessed not just the raising of anti-India slogans, but also floats threatening India's top leaders.
"As you are aware, we have repeatedly raised our strong concerns regarding the violent imagery being used by extremist elements in Canada against our political leadership. Last year, a float depicting the assassination of our former Prime Minister was used in a procession. "Display of posters of Indian diplomats have also been put out across Canada threatening violence against them," Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a statement.

"Enjoyed Seeing Myself Dance": PM Modi
New Delhi: It was Narendra Modi versus Mamata Banerjee again, in identical memes that showed them dancing. What made the difference was the reaction. While the Bengal police started a hunt for the creator -and gathered much scorn from netizens -- PM Modi applauded the "creativity" and said he "enjoyed" seeing himself dance. "Like all of you, I also enjoyed seeing myself dance. Such creativity in peak poll season is truly a delight!" he posted, retweeting the meme that portrayed him shaking a leg to a popular Bengali number.

93 Seats In 12 States, Union Territories To Vote In Phase 3 Today
The Phase 3 election is on areas that are BJP strongholds. In 2019, the party won 72 of the 93 seats going to polls today, 26 of them in Gujarat alone.
New Delhi: Election on 93 constituencies across 10 states and 2 Union Territories will be held today as the third of the mammoth seven-phase election rolled around. Election on the AnantnagRajouri constituency in Jammu and Kashmir has been postponed to May 25. Here are the Top 10 points in this big story:
Today's election brings to an end polling on more than half of the 543 parliamentary seats and could mean that the country has already delivered a verdict. The BJP has won the Surat seat unopposed as the Election Commission rejected the nomination of the Congress candidate and the other contenders stepped down.

The other state where the BJP had done extremely well, Karnataka, could be a dark horse given the massive sex scandal that has hit BJP ally Janata Dal Secular.
The BJP has tried to distance itself from the scandal, but it is anybody's guess which way the women voters would lean. Maharashtra, where 11 of 48 seats are going to polls, has proved harder to read given the seismic political shifts the state
Congress Opposes Reservation for Backward Castes:

lap of that party. The Kaka Kalelkar Commission was the first to prepare a report recommending the reservation for the backward caste people but Congress never implemented that. Then, the Mandal Commission came but it was also put on the back-burner by the Congress. When the Mandal Commission was approved, Rahul Gandhi's father Rajiv Gandhi opposed it the most," Home Minister Shah said addressing a rally in Bihar's Ujiarpur on Monday. "Many years passed and no one did anything for the backward and extremely backward classes in the country. After the formation of the Narendra Modi government, the Backward-Extremely Backward Commission was constituted," he added.

Israel Votes to Close Al Jazeera Offices
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that his government has voted unanimously to shut down the local offices of Qatar-owned broadcaster Al Jazeera, escalating Israel’s long-running feud with the channel at a time when cease-fire negotiations with Hamas — mediated by Qatar — are gaining steam.
According to a statement from Netanyahu’s office, the decision goes into effect immediately. It could include closing the channel’s offices in Israel, confiscating broadcast equipment, preventing the broadcast of the channel’s reports and blocking its websites, among other measures, the statement said.

Sri Lanka approves 20-year power purchase pact with Adani Green Energy
HiIndia Newsdesk
Sri Lanka has approved a 20-year power purchase agreement between the island nation's government and Adani Green Energy for the development of 484 megawatt wind power stations in the northeast region.
"The negotiated tariff rate of USD 0.0826 per kilo watt hour is to be paid in local rupees on the prevailing exchange rate at the time of payment," energy minister Kanchana Wijesekara said in a post on social media platform X.
He added that the purchasing cost would be below the current average cost of energy at 39.02 Sri Lanka rupees per
US economic growth slows but inflation grows
The US economy grew by less than forecast in the first three months of this year but inflation gathered pace, which could delay an interest rate cut. Official figures revealed the economy expanded at an annualised rate of 1.6%, far below expectations and the growth seen in the final months of 2023.
Meanwhile, inflation, which measures the pace of price rises, has increased.
At the start of the year, experts had been forecasting a series of interest rate cuts in the US. However, inflation is yet to fall back to the Federal Reserve's 2% target, and on Thursday, figures from the US Department of Commerce showed that inflation increased by 3.4% in the first three months of 2024. This is compared to an increase of 1.8% in the final three months of 2023.
Raising interest rates makes borrowing - for things such as loans and mortgages - more expensive and theoretically is meant to encourage people to spend less. The idea is that this helps to bring inflation down by dampening demand.
Olu Sonola, head of US economic research at Fitch, the credit rating agency, said: "The hot inflation print is the real story in this report.

US revokes licences for sales of chips to Huawei
The US government says it has revoked some licences that allowed US chip makers to export certain goods to Chinese technology giant Huawei.
The Department of Commerce did not specify which permits were cancelled but San Diego-based chip giant Qualcomm has told BBC News the move affects one of its licences.
Another US chipmaker, Intel, declined to comment, while Huawei did not immediately respond to a BBC request for comment.
Since 2019, the US has restricted technology exports to Huawei, citing alleged ties to the Chinese military but companies like Intel and Qualcomm were granted some exemptions.
"The Commerce Department has revoked certain export licenses for Huawei in our industry, including one of our licenses. We will continue to comply with all applicable export control regulations," Qualcomm said.
UK startup gets $1bn funding for selfdriving car tech
A UK firm developing artificial intelligence (AI) tech to power self-driving cars has raised $1.05bn (£840m) in funding. Microsoft and leading chip-maker, Nvidia, are among the companies investing in Wayve's latest funding round, led by investment firm SoftBank. It is the largest known investment in an AI company in Europe to date. Wayve says the funding will allow it to help build the autonomous cars of the future.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said it "anchors the UK’s position as an AI superpower". "The fact that a homegrown, British company has secured the biggest investment yet in a UK AI start-up is a testament to our leadership in this industry", he said. "[The investment] sends a crucial signal to the market of the strength of the UK’s AI ecosystem, and we look forward to watching more AI companies here thrive and scale," said Wayve head Alex Kendall. Despite their upbeat tone, all of the world's most valuable AI firms are based in the United States or China. The UK's competition watchdog is investigating whether a handful of big tech firms are set to dominate much of the market.

A bilateral series from December 2012-January 2013 in India also marked the final bilateral series between two nations. Since then, both nations have only clashed at ICC tournaments and Asia Cup.
TSpeaking to the ANI, Shukla said, "In the case of the Champion Trophy, we will do whatever the Government of India will tell us to do. We send our team only when the Government of India gives us permission. So we will go according to the decision of the Indian government."
Heartbreak For India At Thomas And Uber Cup Final
he Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Vice-President, Rajeev Shukla said that the Indian team will be sent to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy next year only if the central government gives permission for it. The ICC Champions Trophy will be held next year from February to March 2025 in Pakistan. This comes amid media reports that India may not travel to Pakistan for the tournament. Since 2008's Asia Cup, India has not played any cricket tournaments in Pakistan due to tense relationships between both nations because of terrorism.
No plans to rest Jasprit Bumrah ahead of T20 World Cup
Mumbai Indians have no plans to rest India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah ahead of the T20 World Cup even though they are out of contention for the IPL playoffs, said batting coach Kieron Pollard. The home team defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by seven wickets at the Wankhede on Monday after Suryakumar Yadav (102 not out) struck his second IPL century to help his team chase down a target of 174 with 16 balls to spare. The win helped them end their four-match losing streak. "I certainly haven't had any discussions about that," Pollard told media after the game when asked if there are any plans to rest Bumrah from their remaining two matches keeping in mind the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Pakistan was compelled to use a hybrid strategy when hosting the Asia Cup last year, with all of India's matches-including those against Pakistan--taking place in Sri Lanka. The tournament final, which India won, took place in Colombo. Although Pakistan had hinted at the possibility of using a hybrid approach to participate in the ODI World Cup in India the previous year, it was never given any thought. Before they were eliminated in the group rounds, they ultimately played all of their games in India at five different locations.
Fatigued Rohit Sharma needs a break: Former Australia captain Michael Clarke
Former Australia captain Michael Clarke feels a "fatigued" Rohit Sharma needs a little bit of break in the ongoing IPL, especially as he's tasked with captaining India in T20 World Cup beginning on June 1.
Rohit hasn't been amongst runs of late for Mumbai Indians in this IPL.
However, with MI's chances of making the playoffs as good as over, a bit of
break could freshen Rohit up before the T20 Cup in the Caribbean and the United States.
“Rohit, being the wise judge of his own performances, will undoubtedly be disappointed, especially considering his strong start. In my view, he might be feeling a bit fatigued as well,” Clarke told Star Sports.
“A break to freshen up could do wonders for him, but as the Indian captain and a key player for Mumbai Indians, you're not getting a break. He's going to have to find form,” Clarke continued. Clarke, though, isn't too worried about Rohit's current form. "He doesn't seem to be struggling with his timing,” Clarke said. “With someone like Rohit, it's only a matter of time before he finds his form again. Hopefully, he stresses less and focuses on his game because he's too talented to keep missing out.
Australia Ships Cricket Drop-In Pitches To USA For T20 World Cup 2024
The United States, set to co-host Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 in June this year, will be using Australian-based pitches for the global cricket tournament. The USA cricket authorities recently received pitches shipped straight from Adelaide in Australia, as confirmed by Adelaide Oval pitch curator Damian Hough.
The US will be co-hosting a major ICC event for the first time through this year’s Men’s T20 World Cup in June. In a bid to prepare for the 20-team tournament, the USA cricket authorities recently had pitches imported from Adelaide in Australia.
Adelaide Oval pitch curator Damian Hough, who has been tasked of growing pitches and shipping them to Florida, said that their primary aim is to produce pitches which can provide “entertaining cricket” for the spectators.
Hough added that his team has given its “best shot” in making bouncy pitches and are hoping that the 2024 T20 World Cup will be played out in good surfaces.
The T20 World Cup 2024 will commence on June 1 with the opening match between USA and Canada in Texas. While the United States will be hosting 16 matches of the tournament, the other
39 (including the knockouts) have been allotted to West Indies.
The USA set of matches will be played at Florida’s Lauderhill, New York’s East Meadow and the Grand Prairie in Texas.
The New York-based venue will be hosting the most-hyped league stage match of the tournament, with age-old arch-rivals India and Pakistan taking on each other there on June 9.
Lakshya Sen was the lone bright spot as the Indian men's team failed to defend its title after going down fighting 1-3 to China in the quarterfinals, while the women's side suffered a 0-3 loss to Japan to also end their campaign in the Thomas and Uber Cup Final on Thursday. Two years after India claimed their maiden title at the World Men's Team Championships, the country's shuttlers endured a tough day in office as world No. 9 HS Prannoy, world No. 3 Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty and Dhruv Kapila and Sai Pratheek K failed to go the distance in their respective matches.
Neeraj Chopra Competes in India After 3 Years

Indian Expats Urge US Government To Reject Religious Freedom Report
USCIRF had in its annual report recommended that India be designated as a "Country of Particular Concern", allegingthat the status of religious freedom in the country has worsened.
HiIndia Newsdesk
Washington: Observing that the USCIRF's recent annual report that criticised India for alleged violations of religious freedom is based on omission and commission of facts utilising partial data, an Indian expatriates' think-tank has urged the US State Department to reject it.
In its annual report on Wednesday, the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) recommended that India be designated as a "Country of Particular Concern (CPC)", alleging that the status of religious freedom in the country has worsened.
India on Thursday blasted the Congressional-appointed body's report for attempting to “interfere” in its electoral exercise and continuing to indulge in “propaganda” against the country, “masquerading” as part of an annual report.
Indians In US Amongst Top 3 Sending Money Back Home
A recent Pew Research Center Report underscores the profound financial and philanthropic ties Indian Americans maintain with their ancestral homeland. Among the six largest Asian origin groups in the US, Indians rank among the top three contributors to charities or remittances sent back home, alongside Filipino and Vietnamese adults. The survey, conducted from July 2022 to January 2023 among 7,006 Asian adults, reveals that 36% of Indian adults have sent money to relatives or charities in their ancestral homeland. This financial support extends far beyond emotional ties, reflecting a commitment deeply ingrained in Indian culture. In 2021, Asian Americans collectively remitted approximately $63 billion to their countries of origin, with India, the Philippines, and China being the primary recipients. India alone received over $10 billion in remittances from the US, highlighting the substantial economic impact of Indian Americans' contributions to their homeland. These findings not only underscore the enduring bond Indian Americans maintain with their roots but also highlight their significant role in global remittance flows, further solidifying their place within the broader diaspora narrative.
"The US Commission on International Religious Freedom is known as a biased organisation with a political agenda. They continue to publish their propaganda on India masquerading as part of an annual report," Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in New Delhi.
In a statement on Thursday, the Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora Studies (FIIDS) characterised the USCIRF report as biased, presenting partial data and flawed conclusions.
Khanderao Kand, Chief of Policy and Strategy at FIIDS, stated that the
USCIRF report is based on "omission and commission of facts, utilising partial data, hiding the full context, generalising isolated incidents, and questioning the implementation of the law of the land."
“This report used partial and isolated incidents to wrongly brand the largest democracy in the world with a population of 1.4 billion, missing the opportunity to indicate positive recent trends against the background of a complex and violent past history,” he said.
Khanderao added that the USCIRF is wrong to recommend the largest democracy and largely peaceful civilisation as a country of particular concern.
“Moreover, it is highly questionable recommendation asking to evaluate India under FATF (Financial Action Task Force), especially when India itself has been a target of terrorism,” he said.

Khosla Hosts Biden Fundraiser, Tickets $6,600 - $100,000
“Experience matters significantly, and it's clear that Shawn Still has the wrong kind of experience,” he said. The young Indian-American's campaign has also been endorsed by Congresswoman Lucy McBath of Georgia's seventh Congressional district.
“I am endorsing Ashwin Ramaswami's historic bid for District 48 because he has the vision and experience to fight for Georgians in the state legislature. This seat is the most competitive in the Georgia Senate, making it the top pickup opportunity for Georgia Democrats,” said Congresswoman McBath. “Ashwin's opponent, Senator Shawn Still, is currently facing a seven-count indictment for his role as secretary of the false elector meeting of conspiracy theorists to overturn the results of the 2020 election for Donald Trump.
Indian American venture capitalist Vinod Khosla will be hosting a fundraising reception at his home in Portola Valley, California for President Joe Biden during his trip to Silicon Valley. "Raju has three great scripts for the sequel. Some things are missing here and there. I don't think that's happening. Now a lot of time has passed. I told Raju that whatever begins, also has an end. Looks like we left the Munna Bhai film franchise on interval. Everyone is impatient because it is not over yet. Munna Bhai series needs to end,' added Arshad. Rajkumar Hirani indeed delivered the best films with his 'Munna Bhai' franchise. The director proved the mettle of his brilliant storytelling while making these two movies the brightest gem of his filmography which is well decked up with a 100% success track record. Of course, we have so many natural remedies available to us that our moms and grandmothers have been doing for years, like using ubtans. I drink as much water as I can."
Namrata further shared how, because of the shooting, there is a lot of heat damage to her hair that is unfortunately 'unavoidable' in her profession.
"I try to get a hair spa every month. It is a kind of investment that I have to try and do because it is the only way to balance the amount of heat that goes onto my hair. So, I get a hair spa. But at home, I try to use oils on my scalp, oils that are good for hair growth and repair. I try to deep condition my hair as much as I can, and try not to use any heat on my days off," she said. Opening up about her fitness routine, Namrata added: "I try to incorporate some sort of fitness routine every day, even if it's a short walk. I think it's really important to stay active, your mental health to stay active. Modi predicts Congress under 50 seats, Rahul shifts focus to Rae Bareli
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday asserted that Congress’ tally in the Lok Sabha polls will be an “all-time low”, as the grand old party would struggle to cross even the “half-century” mark in the hustings.
Modi also mocked Rahul Gandhi's decision to contest from Uttar Pradesh's Rae Bareli seat, and said the Congress leader did so after “sensing defeat" in Kerala's Wayanad, where he is a sitting MP.
Addressing back-to-back rallies in the Bardhaman-Durgapur, Krishnanagar and Bolpur Lok Sabha constituencies, the PM said if Congress is voted to
power, it would "snatch" quotas meant for the Scheduled Caste, Dalits and OBCs and give those to its "jihadi vote bank" to pursue the party's "appeasement politics".
Modi slammed the Opposition bloc INDIA and the Congress for
"supporting" the "vote jihad" comments made by a candidate of the Samajwadi Party (SP), an ally of the grand old party in Uttar Pradesh.
"There is no need for opinion polls or exit polls, as I had talked about their (Congress) defeat long back in Parliament. When their senior leader quit her Lok Sabha seat and entered Parliament through Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan, it was evident they sensed defeat," he said, in an apparent dig at Sonia Gandhi.
"Now, the 'shehzada' of Congress, who went to Wayanad after losing the Amethi seat, is also contesting from Rae Bareli. He knows he will lose Wayanad this time," Modi said.

one another. Tolerance to each other's fault to a certain bearable extent has to be inherent in every marriage. Petty quibbles, trifling differences are mundane matters and should not be exaggerated and blown out of proportion to destroy what is said to have been made in heaven," the court said. Its observation came in a judgment that set aside a Punjab and Haryana High Court order, which dismissed a husband's plea seeking the quashing of a criminal case lodged against him. The court said that many times, the parents and close relatives of a married woman make a mountain out of a molehill and instead of salvaging the situation and saving the marriage, their action brings about complete destruction of the marital bonds on trivial issues.

Bhushan Amid Sexual Harassment Charge, Fields His Son
The BJP named Dinesh Pratap Singh as its candidate from Congress stronghold Rae Bareli
New Delhi: The BJP's heavyweight MP and former wrestling boss Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh won't be contesting the Lok Sabha polls this time. The BJP has instead named his son Karan Bhushan Singh as its candidate from Uttar Pradesh's Kaiserganj. The
announcement, made this afternoon, puts a lid on the speculation surrounding the Kaiserganj seat and its high-profile MP. Besides announcing the name of Karan Bhushan Singh, the BJP named Dinesh Pratap Singh as its candidate from Congress stronghold Rae Bareli. The Congress is yet to name its pick from the prestige seat, earlier held by Sonia Gandhi.
A six-time MP, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh suffered a massive political setback due to sexual harassment allegations against him that saw some of the country's top wrestlers hit the streets. The allegations also prompted the BJP to look for another option, as it did not want the row to ruin its poll prospects in the politically-significant state. The party, however, knows the political clout Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh holds in the area.

Indian-origin Sunita Williams’ Space Mission Called off Hours before Take-off
Astronaut Sunita Williams who was all set to leave on her third space mission will now have to wait as her Boeing Starliner was delayed just hours before the take-off time due to a glitch. The Starliner was all set to blast off on May 6 from Cape Canaveral in Florida at 10:34 pm local Florida time. But just as NASA astronauts Williams along with Butch Wilmore were strapped onto their seats in the spacecraft at the Cape Canaveral Space Launch Complex 41 and were just preparing for lift-off there was a sudden announcement of a delay call. They exited and returned to astronaut crew quarters.
The launch was scrubbed due to a faulty oxygen relief valve observation on the United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket Centaur second stage according to NASA.
In spaceflight terminology when NASA refers to a launch as “scrubbed,” it means that the launch of a spacecraft has been canceled, postponed, or delayed.
NASA, Boeing, and United Launch Alliance hosted a news conference to discuss Monday’s scrubbed launch attempt of the agency’s Crew Flight Test.
This decision to scrub can be made for various reasons, including technical issues, mechanical failures, unfavorable weather conditions, or other safety concerns that arise before the spacecraft can be safely launched. When NASA announced back in 2020 that Indian American Sunita Williams and fellow NASA astronaut Barry Wilmore will fly on Boeing Crew Flight Test (CFT), Starliner’s first crewed mission to the International Space Station, there was excitement in the community about the Indianorigin astronaut making her third remarkable journey.
The plan was for them to live and work there for about two weeks as per the US space While Williams, would serve as pilot Wilmore was all set to command the mission.
Williams previously served as the backup test pilot for CFT while assigned as commander of NASA’s Boeing Starliner-1 mission, Starliner’s first post-certification mission.

After Kalpana Chawla, who died in the Columbia disaster, Williams is the only other Indian-American astronaut to reach this feat
Sunita Williams has thus far spent a total of 322 days in space on two missions. She ranks sixth on the alltime US endurance list, and second all-time for a female astronaut.
Williams was selected as an astronaut by NASA in 1998. She has been aboard the International Space Station twice and was all set to return to the space station for a third time. This time traveling aboard Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft as pilot. Her previous two space missions

In Expedition 32/33 from July –November 2012, she served as flight engineer and ISS commander, conducting three spacewalks alongside Akihiko Hoshide of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).
“It will be like going back home,” Williams said about her Space Mission
In 2006 Williams established a world record for female astronauts by conducting four spacewalks totaling over 29 hours
Talking about her third space mission during her training at the launch pad, Williams said, “When I reach the International Space Station, it will be like going back home.”
Williams also named the Starliner spacecraft “Calypso” for her "love of the ocean.” She named to Calypso also to pay tribute to the explorer Jacques Cousteau, who sailed across the world on his ship bearing the same name. Cousteau's goal was to learn about the ocean and teach others about the wonders of the sea. Williams believes Starliner can do the same for space," according to a statement from the US space agency. She previously held two space records — most spacewalks by a woman (seven) and most spacewalk time for a woman (50 hours, 40 minutes).

Biden Expands Healthcare for DACA Recipients
HiIndia Newsdesk
WASHINGTON, DC- Over 100,000 young immigrants protected by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program are on the verge of gaining access to federal healthcare coverage under the Affordable Care Act. Initially enacted in 2012, the DACA program offers deportation relief and work permits to undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children. However, DACA recipients have been excluded from federally funded health insurance programs until now. This policy shift, slated to be effective from November 1, 2024, is poised to provide healthcare access to approximately 100,000 previously uninsured DACA participants. They will benefit from financial assistance, tax credits, and reduced out-of-pocket costs. “Dreamers are integral members of our communities, serving as our loved ones, nurses, teachers, and small business owners,” stated President Joe Biden. “They deserve access to healthcare just like all of us.” DACA recipients are three times more likely than the general population to lack insurance coverage, according to a statement from Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra. Moreover, uninsured individuals are less inclined to seek preventative care. “Presently, over onethird of DACA recipients are without health insurance. Making them eligible for coverage will not only enhance their health and well-being but also contribute to the overall economy,” added Becerra.

Armed Robbers Compel Phone and Banking App Access in Chicago
CHICAGO, IL- Multiple incidents of armed robbery targeting individuals in Chicago have sparked concern for personal safety, especially in a city where electronic devices play a significant role in daily life. The modus operandi involves assailants wielding firearms, coercing victims to unlock their phones and banking applications, resulting in significant losses of personal property and potential financial risks. To mitigate the vulnerability to such crimes, Professor Bill Kresse, also known as Professor Fraud, advocates for proactive measures. One strategy is to reconsider the presence of banking and cash applications on mobile devices. If essential, he suggests segregating financial transactions to a separate account with minimal funds. By limiting the balance to a few hundred dollars or a maximum of $1,000, potential losses in the event of robbery are constrained, safeguarding most of one’s assets. Furthermore, Kresse recommends connecting payment platforms like Zelle or Venmo exclusively to the

Despite these precautionary measures, the Chicago Police continue their pursuit of the perpetrators involved in these criminal acts. Individuals possessing any pertinent information are urged to contact the Grand Central Area detectives at 312-746-7394, contributing to ongoing investigative efforts aimed at apprehending the offenders and ensuring community safety.
In the end, Mane Lai Ja left an indelible mark on the hearts of its viewers, prompting reflection, dialogue, and ultimately, hope for a better future for all daughters across communities. Despite the tears shed, the audience departed with a sense of fulfillment and optimism, having experienced a truly unforgettable cinematic journey.

As Indians have carbheavy meals, it is important to balance daily meals with protein, not just of the right quantity but of the right quality too. Fortunately, there are several easy and practical ways to increase your protein intake without much hassle.
8 Easy Ways to Meet Daily Protein Quota
Protein is often called the king of nutrients because it has a multi-purpose role to play in key body functions, including muscle repair and growth, immunity, hormone regulation and weight management. Whether you’re an athlete looking to enhance performance, a fitness enthusiast aiming to build muscle, or simply someone striving for better overall health, ensuring an adequate protein intake is essential. As Indians have carb-heavy meals, it is important to balance daily meals with protein, not just of the right quantity but of the right quality too. Fortunately, there are several easy and practical ways to increase your protein intake without much hassle. How much protein do you need? Anywhere between 10 per cent to 35 per cent of your calories should come from protein. So, if your needs are 2,000 calories, that’s 200–700 calories from protein, or 50–175 grams. An adult needs 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight.
1. Start Your Day with Protein:
Breakfast sets the tone for the rest of your day, so why not kick start it with a protein-packed meal? Eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese, soy products and pea protein are several options to consider. You can whip up a quick smoothie by blending protein paste or powder with fruits, vegetables and a liquid base like milk or almond milk.
2. Snack Smartly:
Instead of reaching for sugary or carb-heavy snacks, opt for protein-rich snacks to keep you
Breakfast, for most people, includes buttered toast and fruits or fruit juice. But if are even a wee bit health conscious, you must know that according to experts fruits are among the three worst foods to start one’s day with. “Early in the morning, the blood sugars are usually uncontrolled due to hormonal changes. So, fruits, honey, and biscuits are [the] worst [foods] to start your day with,” a reel on the Health Hatch Instagram page mentioned.
But it’s not just these, even breads, toast/ khari, fruit juice etc, can impact blood sugar levels negatively and should be avoided.
1) White or whole bread have a high GI index, and are highly processed foods with no nutrients and fibre
full and satisfied between meals. Nuts and seeds, such as almonds, peanuts and pumpkin seeds, are convenient and portable sources of protein. Yogurt with berries, protein bars, sprouts and hard-boiled eggs are other choices.
3. Include Protein in Every Meal:
Make it a habit to include a source of protein in every meal. Whether it’s chicken, fish, tofu, beans, lentils, soy products, or peas, aim to fill at least a quarter of your plate with protein-rich foods. This not only helps increase your protein intake but also ensures balanced nutrition throughout the day.
4. Choose High-Protein Grains and Legumes:
When selecting grains and legumes, opt for varieties that are higher in protein. Quinoa, buckwheat, amaranth and wild rice are excellent alternatives to traditional grains like white rice or pasta. Similarly, lentils, chickpeas, black beans and edamame are legumes that pack a protein punch.
5. Embrace Protein Supplements:
While whole food sources should always be your primary focus, protein supplements can be a convenient way to boost your intake, especially on busy days or when you’re on the go. Whey protein, casein protein and plant-based protein powders are popular options that can be easily added to shakes, smoothies or even baked goods but plan your intake on the advice of a dietician and after checking your
ingredients list fully. Usually, these products are high in sugar (commercial brands use different forms or names of sugars to hide the fact),” said Dr Patil.

health parameters.
6. Cook in Bulk:
Spend some time on meal prep during the week to ensure you have protein-rich options readily available. Cook large batches of chicken, beef, tofu, or plant-based proteins that you can portion out and incorporate into meals throughout the week. Having pre-cooked protein on hand makes it easier to throw together quick and nutritious meals, even on hectic days.
7. Get Creative with Recipes:
Experiment with different recipes and cooking methods to make your meals more exciting and flavorful. Try marinating meats before grilling or baking them, or incorporate protein-rich ingredients like cottage cheese or yogurt into recipes for pancakes, muffins or savoury sauces.
8. Don’t Forget About Dairy: Dairy products like milk, cheese and yogurt are not only rich in protein but also provide essential nutrients like calcium and vitamin D. Opt for low-fat or yogurt varieties to maximise protein content while keeping calories in check.

nutrition and dietetics, Marengo Asia Hospitals, Gurugram. Furthermore, when eaten on an empty stomach, pastries and sweet baked goods like croissants, muffins, and sweet rolls are especially dangerous for those with diabetes or pre-diabetes since they are high in added sugars and refined carbohydrates. “Over time, these meals may cause insulin resistance, which will make controlling blood sugar even more difficult,” said Dr Sharma. By making informed dietary choices, individuals with diabetes or pre-diabetes can better regulate their blood sugar and support their overall well-being, said Dr Gaurav Jain, senior consultant, internal medicine, Dharamshila Narayana Superspeciality Hospital.
Worst Foods for Empty Stomach with Diabetes
2) Fruit juices (fresh or packed) are loaded with natural sugars. They do have lots of vitamins, minerals, and fibre but are a NO-NO for an empty stomach. “Whole fruit can be taken later in the day as mid meal snack,” said Dr Patel.
3) Corn flakes/cereal bars/muesli: Though these foods are labelled as being rich in protein/no added sugar/millets based “we must still to check the
Although whole fruits contain fibre, the juicing process eliminates it, leaving behind a concentrated supply of sugar that can spike blood sugar levels rapidly. “Fruit juice can lead to abrupt increases in blood sugar levels because it lacks the fibre to slow down the absorption of sugar,” said Dr Neeti Sharma, senior consultant,

2) Any item that is lentil-based. Eg- Dal appam
3) For heavy breakfast eaters, a good choice would be protein along with carbs. For example, vegetable stuffed paratha with curd. Opting for balanced meals and snacks that include lean proteins, healthy fats, fiber-rich carbohydrates, and plenty of vegetables is key for managing blood sugar levels effectively throughout the day.

City Bureau, Invisible Institute Win Pulitzer for 'Missing in Chicago'
City Bureau Senior Reporter Sarah Conway and Invisible Institute Data Director Trina ReynoldsTyler have won the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for Local Reporting for their investigation “Missing in Chicago.” “Missing in Chicago” is a sevenpart investigative series that reveals how Chicago police have routinely violated state law and police procedure, delaying and mishandling missing person cases. The report revealed a racial bias that disproportionately impacts Black women and girls, and how poor police data is making the problem harder to solve.
ABOUT THE SERIES
Colonel John Mawn Jr. the accused stole millions in jewels and cash.
The accused who have been arrested and charged in connection with the burglaries are -- Jovan Lemon, 29, of Providence, RI, Paul Lemon, 30, of Warwick, RI, Steven Berdugo, 28, of Providence, RI and Paul Miller, 46 of Woonsocket, RI.

H-1B Applications Tighten Amid Tech Slump
and Fraud Crackdown
WASHINGTON, DC- The H-1B visa lottery, a crucial avenue for skilled foreign professionals to join the U.S. tech workforce, is undergoing a significant transformation. Applications for fiscal year 2025 have dropped by 38%, marking a notable shift driven by both new regulations aimed at curbing fraud and the recent economic challenges faced by the tech industry. No More Lottery Spam: The U.S.
Citizenship and Immigration Services has implemented new regulations restricting applicants to a single entry in the lottery, regardless of the number of job offers they possess. This change is intended to deter companies from inundating the system with duplicate applications to inflate their odds. Consequently, there has been an 88% decrease in such entries.
Tech Layoffs Impact Hiring: The widespread layoffs witnessed across the tech sector have likely contributed to fewer companies seeking H-1B workers. This economic downturn stands as a significant factor behind the dwindling application numbers. Streamlined Procedures: In an effort to enhance efficiency, USCIS has streamlined the registration process, making it less burdensome for applicants.

It wasn’t until 2017 that Leyva openly shared her NDE with friends, clients, and family, witnessing the positive impact her story had on them. Encouraged by this response, she sought to convey her profound sense of connection with the universe through her paintings.
The series showcased at Oakton brilliantly captures Leyva’s quest to rediscover the heavenly essence on Earth. While some pieces have been displayed publicly in recent years, this exhibition presents the full spectrum of 11 works spanning from 2018 to 2024.
Leyva’s inspiration derives from various spiritual teachings, including the wisdom of the Buddha and the insights of contemporary meditation advocates such as Tara Brach and Jack Kornfield. Her paintings delve into themes of forgiveness, compassion, joy, and integrity, beckoning viewers to embark on a journey of self-discovery and awakening.
Employing a unique combination of oil paint on tulle, Leyva creates a sense of weightlessness and luminosity in her works, prompting viewers to contemplate the essence of human connection and the divine.

VAWA Self-Petition Processing Streamlined at Nebraska Service Center
USCIS centralized the intake process of Form I-360, Petition for Amerasian, Widow(er), or Special Immigrant, and related filings under the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) for selfpetitioning abused spouses, children, and parents at the Nebraska Service Center.
Previously, after we received and receipted VAWA Form I-360 filings at the Nebraska Service Center, we transferred them to the Vermont Service Center to complete intake processing, and we mailed a transfer notice to the VAWA self-petitioner. By implementing processing efficiencies at intake, we no longer need to transfer VAWA-based filings to the Vermont Service Center and no longer need to send a transfer notice to selfpetitioners. This processing update does not affect the filing location or adjudication of Form I-360 for VAWA selfpetitioners. VAWA self-petitioners should continue to file Form I-360 with the Nebraska Service Center, as described on our Form I-360 Filing Addresses page. USCIS officers from the Humanitarian, Adjustment, Removing Conditions, and Travel Documents Service Center who have specialized VAWA training will continue to adjudicate these cases.

Indian Overseas Congress Cautions Against Foul Play In Indian Elections
WASHINGTON, DC- The Indian Overseas Congress Washington DC Chapter has cautioned against foul play in ongoing parliamentary elections. During a Save Democracy Rally organized in Fairfax, Virginia on April 28, the Chapter underlined the urgent need for Indian citizens to make informed choices in the Lok Sabha elections. The chapter
suggested it was important to uphold democracy, secularism, and pluralism in India. The Chapter urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to expand actual cross-verification of vote counts in electronic voting machines with Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) paper slips to all polling stations in India to eliminate the possibility of foul play. It also called upon the ECI to ensure that no candidate faces intimidation or undue influence to withdraw from the elections, and take meaningful steps to strictly curtail the influence of money power. $100 Million For Amritsar. Former Indian Envoy Taranjit Sandhu Behind New Project
Viksit Amritsar Initiative is a plan envisioned by a group of prominent Indian-Americans aimed at supporting the social and economic development of Amritsar. The group has already made a commitment of $100 million to fund startups in the city in Punjab. Amritsar houses Sikhism’s holiest shrine — The Golden Temple.
The initiative is the brainchild of former Indian envoy to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu who is also the BJP’s candidate from Amritsar for the 2024 Lok Sabha election.
Biden to Extend Health Insurance to Dreamers
An extension of federally run health insurance cover to an estimated 100,000 previously uninsured Dreamers -- some immigrants who were illegally brought to the US as children, has been announced by the Biden administration. This includes about 5,000 South Asians.
Those who are uninsured in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, are expected to enroll in the Health Insurance Marketplace and Basic Health Program, both created under the Affordable Care Act as per the US Department of Health and Human Services.
The DACA program was launched in 2012 under former President Barack Obama.
Vice President Kamala Harris said, “Dreamers throughout this country are serving in our military, teaching in our classrooms, and leading our small businesses as entrepreneurs. They are our neighbors, classmates, and loved ones. Our nation is fortunate that America is their home.”
Eminent Indian-Americans, the
Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FICCI), and the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) have come together for this. The initiative will be led by Sanjiv Lakhanpal, and would provide mentorship and funding to entrepreneurs with a focus on socially and environmentally responsible ventures.
Amritsar is Sandhu’s hometown where he returned after his retirement. The initiative has already received over 250 applications from entrepreneurs across various fields.

Illinois Residents Must Secure REAL ID Before Deadline
CHICAGO, IL — One year from now, Illinois residents will need a REAL ID card for air travel and accessing certain federal offices. After May 7th, 2025, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will require identification that complies with the standards set by the REAL ID Act of 2005, enacted in response to the 9/11 attacks. The deadline was postponed multiple times due to a backlog at driver’s license facilities caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. REAL ID cards resemble driver’s licenses but feature a gold star and employ technology that enhances security against counterfeiting. To obtain a REAL ID, individuals must visit a Secretary of State Drivers Service facility with documentation proving their full legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, two proofs of address, proof of signature, and proof of citizenship. A comprehensive checklist is available on the Illinois Secretary of State’s website. Those with a valid US Passport or who don’t plan to fly, visit military bases, or access federal facilities are exempt from needing a REAL ID. Minors under 18 can still fly without one.

Groups Warn Rutgers Against Permitting Kashmir Flag Split
As a growing number of universities across the US are witnessing protests against Israeli military action in Gaza, Indian-American community organisations have urged the Chancellor of Rutgers University in New Jersey not to allow the display of a separatist Kashmir flag on its campus, as it would send the wrong message.
A group representing protesting students had 10 demands they wanted to be met by the Rutgers University administration. One of the demands said: “Display of the flags of occupied peoples – including but limited to Palestine, Kurds, and Kashmiris – in all areas displaying international flags across the Rutgers campuses.”
The news upset several Indian American groups. Suhag Shukla from the Hindu American Foundation (HAF) wrote on X, Rutgers University “has caved.” Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) wrote on X: Rutgers University “caved in to hate and approved the display of a flag that brought terror to the small surviving indigenous minority in Kashmir.”
Thomas Abraham, Chairman of the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO), wrote a letter to Rutgers University President. The letter said, “This is a dangerous territory for Rutgers to get involved. By even considering this demand, you are questioning the integrity of India. Kashmir is very much (a) part of India. There is no separate flag for Kashmir. Kashmir residents are not displaced people.”
