"Will Respect Judicial Process": Joe Biden

US President Joe Biden has said he will respect a jury’s decision to find his son guilty of gun crimes, after a weeklong trial that laid bare a tumultuous time for the family.

The 12-person jury found Hunter Biden, 54, guilty of lying about his drug use on a form while purchasing a handgun in 2018. He faces possible jail time following the verdict, which marked the first criminal prosecution of a sitting president’s child. His conviction on all three felony counts comes as President Biden campaigns for re-election in November, and less than two weeks after his election rival Donald Trump was himself convicted of a crime in New York.

While President Biden did not attend the trial in Delaware, many family members including First Lady Jill Biden did so regularly. Hunter Biden’s wife, sister and uncle were all present

"I

will accept the outcome of this case and will continue to respect the judicial process as Hunter considers an appeal," said Joe Biden

at times to support him during proceedings.

President Biden flew to Wilmington,

Delaware, after the verdict where he greeted and hugged his son on the tarmac.

“I am the president, but I am also a dad. Jill and I love our son, and we are so proud of the man he is today,” he said in a statement. Mr Biden added that he would “accept the outcome of this case and… continue to respect the judicial process as Hunter considers an appeal”.

President Biden earlier ruled out pardoning his son, whose trial aired embarrassing details as prosecutors sought to show he was using crack cocaine at the time he bought the gun.

Jurors heard from his ex-wife, Kathleen Buhle, and a former girlfriend, Zoe Kestan, who described frequent drug binges that took a toll on his friends and family. Text messages detailing his addiction and photographs, some showing a halfnaked Hunter Biden, were also shown to the court.

Elon Musk Had Sex With SpaceX Intern, Asked Woman To Have His Babies, Claims Report

Elon Musk was said to have asked a SpaceX employee who reported to him to have his babies. The Wall Street Journal cited unnamed sources familiar with the matter as saying that the employee left the company in 2013 and then accused Musk of having asked her more than once to have his babies.

The Journal said that the woman declined the offer and that her working relationship with Musk ultimately deteriorated, with sources saying Musk also denied her a raise.

The SpaceX employee received an exit package valued above $1 million when she left the company, the Journal said, citing a person familiar with the agreement.

Elon Musk and Tesla did not immediately respond to requests for comment made outside normal working hours.

Musk is a well-known advocate of the pronatalist movement.

Pronatalists fear that falling birth rates will lead to the collapse of global civilization. The billionaire has 10

known children and has previously said he is doing his best to help the underpopulation crisis. The Tesla CEO has also had children with another one of his employees, the executive Shivon Zilis of Neuralink. Business Insider previously reported that Musk had twins with Zilis in 2021, and she told the Musk biographer Walter Isaacson that the SpaceX founder had encouraged her to have children and offered to be a sperm donor.

The Wall Street Journal report cited women employees at Tesla who claimed that they were shown "an unusual amount of attention or pursued" by Mr Musk.

Gaza ceasefire plan in balance as US says Hamas proposed 'changes'

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has told Hamas that it is "time for the haggling to stop", after its leaders proposed "numerous changes" to a plan for a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal. He told reporters in Doha that some of the changes were "workable" and others were not, but that the US and mediators Qatar and Egypt would "try to close this deal".

Hamas said on Tuesday that it was ready to “deal positively” with the process but stressed the need for Israel to agree to a permanent ceasefire and full withdrawal from Gaza.

The Israeli government did not comment, but an anonymous official said the Palestinian armed group’s response amounted to a rejection. Israel’s prime minister has not yet publicly endorsed the proposal, which US President Joe Biden said had been offered by the country when he outlined it 12 days ago.

Georgia gunman hijacks commuter bus, leaves one dead

A Georgia man hijacked a commuter bus, held the driver and 17 riders at gunpoint and led a trail of police cars on a miles-long chase through Atlanta

traffic on Tuesday. The suspect, 39-year-old Joseph Grier, was arrested after a Georgia State Patrol officer shot the bus's engine compartment, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said. Police also threw spike strips on the roadway to impede the bus.

Authorities said the hijacking occurred after Grier - a convicted felon whose criminal record includes 19 arrests - argued with another bus passenger, who pulled a gun on him.

Grier then wrestled the firearm away from the man, shot him and ordered the bus driver to flee the scene, according the Georgia Bureau of Investigations.

J&J to Pay $700M in Talc Settlement

New York: US pharmaceutical and cosmetics giant Johnson & Johnson has agreed to pay $700 million to settle allegations it misled customers about the safety of its talcum-based powder products, New York's attorney general announced Tuesday. In its settlement with 42 states and the District of Columbia, Johnson & Johnson did not admit wrongdoing, even though it withdrew the product from the North American market in 2020.

Trump Team Targets Biden Over Hunter's Gun Conviction

Washington: Donald Trump could be tempted to use the conviction of Hunter Biden on felony gun charges as a campaign cudgel against Joe Biden, who is fiercely attached to his son, but experts say that strategy is risky. Indeed, Trump's campaign team did not wait long to offer a hot take on Tuesday's ruling in a Delaware court, which stemmed from the younger Biden's 2018 purchase of a handgun while addicted to crack cocaine.

US Southern Baptist Church opposes IVF in vote

The Southern Baptist Convention has approved a resolution opposing in vitro fertilisation (IVF) at its annual convention. The resolution urged its congregants to only support reproductive technologies that affirm the "unconditional value and right to life of every human being, including those in an embryonic stage", and criticized IVF.

A separate proposed measure to only allow men to be pastors narrowly failed in a vote on Wednesday.

Russian warships and aircraft enter the Caribbean for military exercises

A fleet of Russian warships and aircraft on Wednesday entered the Caribbean in what some see as a projection of strength as tensions grow over Western support for Ukraine.

The US military expects the exercises will involve a handful of Russian ships and support vessels, which may also stop in Venezuela.

Russia is a longtime ally of Venezuela and Cuba, and its warships and aircraft have periodically made forays into the Caribbean. But this mission comes less than two weeks after President Joe Biden authorized Ukraine to use US-provided weapons to strike inside Russia to protect Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, prompting President Vladimir Putin to suggest his military

Israel, Hamas accused of war crimes in new UN report

Israel and Hamas have been accused of committing a litany of war crimes and human rights abuses since 7 October in a new independent report to the UN Human Rights Council.

The damning accusations, compiled by investigators from the UN's Commission of Inquiry, accused both sides of war crimes for mounting attacks against civilian populations and "murder or wilful killings". The report, which covers the period up to the end of 2023, specifically accused Israel of crimes against humanity for torture, "extermination" and "gender persecution targeting Palestinian men and boys". Israel rejected the report's

findings and accused the commission of pursuing "a narrow-led political agenda" against it. Investigators compiled the report, which will be submitted to the UN's human rights council next week, through hours of interviews with victims and witnesses, medical reports and open source information.

The panel, led by former UN human rights chief Navi Pillay, said Israel's use of heavy weapons in populated areas constituted a war crime as it was a direct attack on civilian populations which intended to cause "maximum damage, disregarding the principles of distinction, proportionality and adequate precautions".

within the anti-aging community.

In a post on X, Johnson declared, "My new record: 0.64 pace-of-aging. My birthday is now every 19 months. Previously, I built Braintree Venmo; now I build human, with a goal to slow and reverse aging. Nutrition is a power law of anti-aging. This is what I eat every day. You can too."

In a video statement, he elaborated, "I've been trying to reduce my speed of aging, and I just achieved a personal best— 0.64. That means for every 12 months that pass, I only age 7.6 months."QA At 46, Johnson claims his health markers indicate a younger biological age due to his extensive longevity program, which costs over $2 million annually.

Shenzhen, China: (IANS/ DPA) Hong Kong authorities on Wednesday said they are cancelling the passports of six activists who "absconded" to the UK, using powers from a controversial new national security bill in the Chinese special administrative region.

For the sake of conservation and preservation of the temple, Majhi said the Cabinet decided to constitute a corpus fund of Rs. 500 crore to look after the issues related to the shrine.

NDA Crippled, Modi Must Change Attitude: Rahul

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said that the BJP-NDA government at the Centre was a "crippled" one as the Opposition dealt a fatal blow to the saffron party in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Gandhi also said that the people of the country have sent a clear message

Gandhi

The people of Kerala, Uttar Pradesh and all other states showed the PM that you cannot dictate to us what we want. The people of India told them that the Constitution is our voice. Do not touch the Constitution, says the Congress leader

to the BJP and Narendra Modi and therefore, the prime minister will now have to change his attitude.

"The truth is, what we have today is a crippled government (at the Centre). It has been beaten so badly by the INDIA bloc that it cannot walk straight. US Says Biden And PM Modi Likely To Meet On Sidelines Of G7 Summit

India's Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra told reporters in New Delhi that PM Modi would travel to Italy on Thursday in his first overseas trip after assuming office for a third consecutive term.

Washington: US President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi would likely "have the opportunity to encounter one another" on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Italy, National Security Advisor (NSA) Jake Sullivan said here Wednesday. "He (Biden) expects to see Prime Minister Modi here. It's up to the Indians to formally confirm his attendance, but our expectation is that the two of them will have the opportunity to encounter one another. The nature of that encounter is still fluid because so much of the schedule is fluid," Mr Sullivan told reporters aboard Air Force One on his way to Italy to attend the G7 Summit, along with the US president.

Wayanad or Rae Bareli? Rahul Gandhi not telling yet

Indications are that he might retain the family borough in Uttar Pradesh — given the state’s primacy in national politics — rather than Wayanad in Kerala, which he represented in the previous Lok Sabha

Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday kept Wayanad and Rae Bareli guessing about which of the two he would retain, merely saying that people of neither constituency would be unhappy with his decision.

Indications are that he might retain the family borough in Uttar Pradesh — given the state’s primacy in national politics — rather than Wayanad in Kerala, which he represented in the previous Lok Sabha.

Addressing a thanksgiving rally at Edavanna in Malappuram district, which is part of the Wayanad constituency, Rahul said: “Now I have a dilemma in front of me.”

He added: “What I will commit to you is that both Wayanad and Rae Bareli will be happy with my decision.”

He did not explain but the local Congress in Wayanad is hoping that if Rahul does not retain the seat, his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will replace him.

India's Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra told reporters in New Delhi that PM Modi would travel to Italy on Thursday in his first overseas trip after assuming office for a third consecutive term.

Italy has invited India to attend the 50th G7 Summit on June 14 as an Outreach Country. PM Modi would meet the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni,

Mr Kwatra confirmed. However, details of bilateral or meetings with other leaders are still being worked out, he said. Aboard Air Force One, Mr Sullivan told reporters that Mr Biden spoke with PM Modi over phone while they were in Paris to congratulate him on the election outcome and on being sworn in as Prime Minister for a third term. Responding to a question on allegations related to the involvement of an Indian official in a plot to assassinate a Sikh separatist leader, the NSA said the US would continue to raise the matter at the highest level.

"We have made our views known on this issue, and it will be a continuing topic of dialogue between the US and India, including at very senior levels," Mr Sullivan added.

US Fed Holds Interest Rates, Now Sees Just One Cut This Year

Washington: The US Federal Reserve left its key lending rate unchanged on Wednesday and penciled in just one rate cut this year, down from the three expected in March after inflation stalled in the first quarter.

The Fed voted unanimously to keep its benchmark interest rate between 5.25 and 5.50 per cent, and said that "modest" progress had been made toward its longterm inflation target of two percent.

The announcement suggests that central bank officials remain wary about cutting rates too soon, despite

Left Pressures Biden for Amnesty for 1 Million Undocumented Immigrants

WASHINGTON, DC- President Biden has hinted at more liberal immigration actions in response to left-wing pressure. He is considering a deportation shield for hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants. Last week, Biden announced an executive order to limit asylum claims at the southern border. This move, deemed insufficient by Republicans and yet to impact border numbers, sparked liberal outrage and legal threats from civil rights groups. Biden, anticipating left-wing criticism, teased future efforts to make the immigration system “more just.” Reports suggest the White House is considering “parole in place” for illegal immigrant spouses of U.S. citizens, potentially granting them a pathway to citizenship.

Trouble For Sunita Williams, Crew After 'Spacebug' Detected At Space Station

New Delhi: NASA's Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams and her eight colleagues on the International Space Station (ISS) face a new challenge with the discovery of a superbug, 'Enterobacter bugandensis.' This multi-drug-resistant bacteria, known to infect the respiratory system, has become more potent in the closed environment of the ISS.

Spacebugs like E. bugandensis are not extraterrestrial but have traveled with astronauts to the ISS. Williams and astronaut Barry Eugene "Butch" Wilmore arrived at the ISS on June 6, 2024, aboard the Boeing Starliner spacecraft for a week-long mission. The seven other crew members have been on the ISS longer.

NASA recently studied 13 strains of E. bugandensis isolated from the ISS. These strains, under stress, mutated to become genetically and functionally distinct from their Earth counterparts. The bacteria have thrived on the ISS, co-existing with other microorganisms and potentially aiding their survival.

drug-resistant bug named Kalamiella Piersonii after Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. The joint research team, including Professor Karthik Raman and research scholars from IIT-Madras, published their findings in the journal Microbiome. They emphasized the unique health challenges astronauts face due to altered immune conditions and limited medical facilities in space. Understanding the ISS's microbial landscape is crucial for assessing its impact on astronaut health.

Dr. Venkateswaran highlighted that the research reveals how benign microorganisms help opportunistic pathogens like E. bugandensis adapt and survive in extreme conditions. This knowledge is essential for designing strategies to eradicate pathogens and protect astronaut health.

NASA noted that the ISS's closed environment provides extreme conditions where microorganisms must adapt to survive. This research paves the way for effective preventative measures to ensure astronaut well-being. Professor Raman added, "Microbes continue to puzzle us by growing in the most challenging conditions."

Kartik Aaryan

Kartik Aaryan, who is currently gearing up for his upcoming film Chandu Champion, opened up about his journey in the film industry, embracing the tag of an outsider and attributing his success to sheer hard work. Reflecting on the persistent outsider label, Kartik told Hindustan Times, “It is what it is.” “When I started my journey in Bollywood, I didn't know anyone here. And the way it is going on to date, things are the same. Everything's the same for me. Some Fridays are successful and some are not. But the fact remains that I have never been an insider,” Kartik added. He added, “It is a mindset which is going to stay with me. Till date, I believe that any Friday can be a last Friday also. This is the echo that keeps on going in my mind. Ke kahin mera pack up na ho jaaye (I hope it's not a pack up for my career)”.

Recently, director Kabir Khan opened up about what went into Kartik Aaryan's massive transformation. In an interaction with India Today, he shared, “It was not an easy transformation. It was a massive team. And literally, for 1.5 years, Kartik has lived the life of an athlete. He would wake up early in the morning, go to the gym, have his food, and then go for a boxing session. Then come back and sleep. We even had to monitor his sleep."

It was a moment to highlight for Indian designers Sabyasachi Mukherjee and Manish Malhotra as singersongwriter Rihanna wore neck-pieces designed by both of them at a fashion event for her brand Fenty Hair in Los Angeles. However, a whiff of controversy filled the air as Manish concealed Sabyasachi’s design by cropping out his long necklace from the picture as he used only his choker necklace in the image, giving the impression that Rihanna exclusively wore his design.

Southeast Asian nations top choice for Indians travelling abroad this summer: Survey

Southeast Asian countries have emerged as the favourite destinations for Indian travellers planning short vacations abroad, while the United States, Europe, and Australia were among the preferences for long stays, according to a survey released on Monday.

According to OYO Global Summer Vacations Travelopedia 2024: Southeast Asia has emerged as the top choice of Indian tourists for shorter stays of 5-7 days, making the most of long weekends and holidays after visa relaxation.

Bali emerged as the top destination with 38 per cent respondents voting in its favour, closely followed by Pattaya, Bangkok, and Dubai.

The final sample size comprised around 4,000 respondents, providing a data set to analyse emerging trends and preferences in the overseas travel behaviour of Indian tourists.

US jobs surge casts doubt over interest rate cuts

Hiring in the US surged unexpectedly last month, continuing to defy predictions of a slowdown while raising fresh questions about when interest rates will fall.

Employers added 272,000 jobs in May, the US Labor Department said, above expectations of 185,000 new roles. The larger-than-expected gain emerged despite the highest borrowing costs in more than 20 years, which analysts have been expecting to weigh on the economy.

The US central bank has raised interest rates sharply since 2022 to fight inflation, which measures the pace of price rises. The Fed has cited the strength in employment as a sign that the economy can handle the current rates.

The latest job figures undermine other data suggesting signs of softening and will bolster the case that talk of cutting borrowing costs is premature, analysts said. "Today's data suggests the Fed is going to have to sit tight and wait a while longer before that first cut can be considered," said Richard Carter, head of fixed interest research at Quilter Cheviot, the investment management firm. He added that the figures had the potential to take any move this year "off the table".

The European Central Bank and Bank of Canada announced rate cuts this week, part of a global shift to lower borrowing costs as the shock of inflation exacerbated by Russia's invasion of Ukraine starts to fade.

Southeast Asian destinations such as Indonesia and Malaysia emerged as preferred countries following relaxed visa norms, OYO said.

Europe and the United States of America emerged as the top choice for long-haul

destinations where Indian tourists tend to stay for 1015 days (about 2 weeks) or even more.

OYO Founder and CEO Ritesh Agarwal said, "With improved air connectivity, visa facilitation, and a wide range of travel options, it has become more convenient than ever for Indian travellers to explore the beauty of Southeast Asia. Our ongoing program to increase the number of premium properties in the region will help Indian tourists with a range of stay options at all the popular holiday destinations." The Travelopedia 2024 is the annual report capturing travel preferences and trends among Indian tourists planning to visit abroad for summer vacations. The report is a collection of insights and statistics and analyses data from a survey conducted by the company in India from April 15-May 30, 2024.

India needs 3 lakh skilled professionals for semiconductor industry by 2027: Report

New Delhi:(IANS) As India embarks on its ambitious semiconductor journey, the country will require 2.5 lakh-3 lakh skilled professionals by 2027 across Research and Development (R&D), design, manufacturing and advanced packaging domains, a report showed on Monday.

De-risking initiatives by the world’s leading electronic manufacturers, coupled with targeted government

initiatives and India’s talent pool, have led the country to occupy a key position in the global semiconductor manufacturing space, according to the report by TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship.

Expected to become a $100 billion industry by 2030, the expansion is poised to generate approximately 1 million global jobs by 2025–2026, aligning with India's broader economic and industrial growth objectives.

The Electronics Sector Skill Council (ESSC) currently offers over 35 apprenticeship courses under the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) scheme to address skill shortages at various levels of entry-level work. To address this gap, the TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship is actively collaborating with academia, government bodies, and industry leaders.

Long jail terms for Chinese cybercrime gang in Zambia

Lengthy jail terms have been handed to 22 Chinese citizens - and a Cameroonian man - for cyber-related crimes in Zambia.

The gang's only female convict, Gu Tianjiao, reportedly cried out "papa, papa" as her sevenyear sentence was announced in the Lusaka Magistrates Court on Friday.

Some in the gang - including its mastermind Li Xianlin - received up to 11 years in prison.

The group's members were also fined between $1,500 and $3,000 (£1,180 and £2,360) each.

Victims as far afield as Singapore, Peru and the United Arab Emirates fell prey to their online scams, say Zambian authorities. After a trial lasting several weeks, the perpetrators pleaded guilty on three charges - computerrelated misrepresentation, identity-related crimes, and illegally operating a network or service.

The 22 people jailed on Friday were among a bigger group of 77 suspects arrested in April, in connection with what authorities called a "sophisticated internet fraud syndicate".

Alcatraz Escape

Men Break Out with Spoon

On 12 June 1962, three men escaped from Alcatraz, never to be seen again. The ultimate fate of Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers remains a mystery but the ingenuity and determination of their daring escape – from what was the US's most secure prison – continues to captivate. Two years later, the BBC returned to the scene of the crime.

In May 1964, BBC Panorama's Michael Charlton undertook "the most feared journey in the criminal world" to Alcatraz, the infamous prison island in San Francisco Bay. Known as "the Rock," Alcatraz held some of the most dangerous criminals in the US and was considered impregnable. However, on June 12, 1962, three men managed the impossible: they escaped. Alcatraz began as a naval defense fort during the US Civil War, later becoming a military prison in the early 20th Century. In the 1930s, amid rampant organized crime during Prohibition, the Department of Justice converted it into a federal penitentiary. Notorious inmates included Al Capone, Mickey Cohen, George

Over a period of several months, the men chiselled away at the salt-damaged concrete around the air vent under their sinks

Charlton, visiting a year after Alcatraz's closure, noted its harsh conditions, relentless winds, and deteriorating infrastructure. With Morris as the leader, the four prisoners devised an elaborate escape plan. Over several months, they chiseled at the salt-damaged concrete around the air vents under their sinks using metal spoons, a vacuum-cleaner

"Machine Gun" Kelly, and Robert Stroud, the "Birdman of Alcatraz." These were "men too vicious and troublesome to be held in an ordinary jail," as Charlton described. Four years before Charlton's visit, Frank Lee Morris arrived on Alcatraz. Orphaned at 11 and convicted of his first crime by 13, Morris spent most of his life in correctional facilities. Known for his intelligence and history of prison escapes, he was sent to Alcatraz in January 1960 after escaping from Louisiana State Penitentiary. Upon arrival, he immediately began planning his escape. He was joined by bank-robbing brothers John and Clarence Anglin and Allen West, who had been an inmate since 1957. The men, housed in adjoining cells, could communicate at night.

motor drill, and saw blades. To mask the noise, Morris played his accordion during the designated music hour. They accessed an unguarded utility corridor and set up a workshop in the cellblock's upper level. They crafted a 6x14ft rubber raft and life vests from stolen raincoats, sealing the materials with steam pipes. Paddles were made from plywood. To conceal their nightly absences, they created papiermâché heads with real hair from the barbershop, placing these in their beds alongside bundles of clothes and towels. The men then climbed a 30-foot shaft using plumbing pipes as steps and pried open the ventilator, securing it with a fake soap bolt. Their elaborate and audacious plan culminated in one of the most famous prison escapes in history.

The sun's rays are carcinogenic – here's how to protect yourself properly, according to experts.

Wearing sunscreen is widely acknowledged as being one of the best things we can do for our health. More than 80% of melanoma skin cancer cases are caused by sunburn – and this number is rising year on year. There are an estimated 1.5 million new cases of skin cancer globally each year, with this figure expected to rise by 50% by 2040.

Despite these stark facts and repeated public health warnings about the risks of sun exposure, there's a lot of confusion around how, and when, to apply sunscreen.

Why do we need to protect our skin from the sun?

When we're exposed to the sun, UV radiation damages the DNA, proteins and other molecules found within our skin cells, says Richard Gallo, professor of medicine at University of California.

In moderate amounts, exposure to UV radiation from sunlight helps our skin cells to generate vitamin D. But as we expose our skin to more sunlight, it tries to protect itself by tanning through the production of melanin, Gallo says. "If the exposure is too high, the skin can't protect itself and you get a burn," he says.

This can lead to DNA damage in our cells, which can cause premature ageing, and can increase the risk of developing skin cancer, Gallo says. Exposure to UV radiation is the main cause of the most common forms of skin cancer.

"Low SPF sunscreen slightly reduces radiation exposure from the sun," Gallo says, but "in most cases, this allows all of the harmful effects to still occur. Radiation from the Sun is a potential carcinogen, at even low doses."

What is SPF, and how much do I need?

SPF stands for "sun protection factor", and the number attached to it on bottles of sunscreen indicates how much UV radiation from the Sun is required before it becomes ineffective. The higher the SPF, therefore, the more protected your skin is. However, the SPF only indicates the level of protection from UVB rays – the amount of UVA protection is specified via a separate rating . The amount of UV radiation we're exposed to changes throughout the day – as the Sun's rays get stronger, we're exposed to more solar energy. The Sun's rays are at their strongest between 10am and 4pm.

What's the best way to apply sunscreen?

One 2018 study found that after sunscreen is applied, some UV protection kicks in immediately –though it takes around 10 minutes for this to become stable. However, experts usually recommend that people apply sunscreen 20-30 minutes before sun exposure to allow time for it to absorb into the skin. It might be wise to apply it twice, since studies show that most people tend to underapply sunscreen. In one study, researchers asked 31 participants to apply sunscreen in a lab under black light, and found that applying it twice reduced the surface

SUNSCREEN

Are you using it correctly?

There have been some concerns that sunscreens contain ingredients that can build up in our bodies and cause harm. The evidence suggests that the ingredients used in UK, EU or US-approved suncreams are safe and effective, and any potential harm is outweighed by their benefits in protecting people from UV radiation.

area of skin that they missed the first time around.

Scientists also advise reapplying sunscreen after sweating, being immersed in water, or if our skin has rubbed up against clothing or sand. It's also important to not mix sunscreen with other skin products, such as moisturiser, says Richard Blackburn, professor of sustainable materials at the University of Leeds' school of design. This is because many sunscreens that contain metal nanoparticles like zinc oxide may be less effective because of how these ingredients react with other ingredients. Is sunscreen different in the US compared to the UK?

There are some differences between sunscreens sold in the UK and the US, partly because of contrasts in how they're categorised. In the US, sunscreens are treated as nonprescription drugs, so every ingredient has to go through a long regulatory process, which means new sunscreen filters can take a long time to be approved. In the EU, sunscreens are regulated as cosmetics.

As a result of this longer process to approve new, potentially more effective UV filters, researchers have found that some US sunscreens fail to meet the European Union's higher UVA protection standards. Can I get sunburned through glass? Glass filters the most dangerous radiation from the sun (UVB rays), says Gallo, but it still lets in radiation that causes a low level of damage. Repeated exposures to the sun, even through a glass window, will damage the skin. Exposure to UVA, which is thought to be responsible for 90% of visible changes to the skin as we age,

can still occur through glass

Does sunscreen expire?

Sunscreen becomes less effective over time, experts say, but generally, it should work for up to three years from the date you purchase it. Most sunscreen bottles in the UK will have a jar symbol indicating how many months the product will last for once opened. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the US requires all sunscreen products to have a shelf-life after purchase of at least three years unless it carries an expiration date and provided it hasn't been stored in direct sunlight or excessive heat.

It's also recommended that you check the sunscreen for any obvious changes in consistency and colour if you're not sure. Keeping the bottle out of direct sunlight or in hot environments, like the car helps to avoid speeding up how quickly the ingredients break down. Does sunscreen block vitamin D production?

Vitamin D plays an important role in the absorption of calcium to help maintain strong bones, and maintain our immune systems. There have been some concerns that wearing sunscreen can block vitamin D absorption, but a review of studies concluded that, on balance, the risk of sunscreen affecting how much vitamin D we absorb is low. Does sunscreen contain toxins?

There have been some concerns that sunscreens contain ingredients that can build up in our bodies and cause harm. The evidence suggests that the ingredients used in UK, EU or US-approved suncreams are safe and effective, and any potential harm is outweighed by their benefits in protecting people from UV radiation. The biggest concern with sunscreens

is if you are sensitive or allergic to any of a specific sunscreen's ingredients, says Gallo, as this can cause a rash.

"The myths about toxins in sunscreens are a sensational exaggeration and do not compare with the toxic effects of solar radiation itself," says Gallo. "Sunscreens are safe when used as directed, and much better than getting skin cancer."

How much sunscreen should adults use?

The FDA advises that 2 mg/cm2 (0.16in2) of sunscreen should be applied to the skin for testing, which means that if we apply any less than this, it won't offer the amount of protection on the label. This amount is often likened to roughly six teaspoons for the face and body on an average-sized adult. However, studies have shown that people generally apply much less than they need, and therefore are not as protected as they think they are.

How much sunscreen should toddlers and young children use?

Young children's skin is extra sensitive to UV radiation, so it's particularly important that they're protected from the sun. Babies under the age of six months shouldn't wear sunscreen. They shouldn't be directly exposed to the sun, but protected with loosefitting clothing and shade instead. It's recommended that you apply two teaspoons of sunscreen to two-yearolds, three teaspoons for five-year olds, four teaspoons for nine-year-olds and five teaspoons for 13-year-olds. For older children, scientists recommend reapplying sunscreen every two hours. What type of sunscreen should I use?

It's important to use a high-SPF sunscreen that says "broad spectrum" on the label, as this means it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. There are two main ways of indicating a suncream's level of UVA protection, and which one is used depends on where you live. One is the Protection Grade (PA) system, sometimes labelled as UVA-PF or PPD on suncreams depending on the method used to assess the grade.

New Bill Expands Red Light Camera Program In NYC

NEW YORK CITY, NY New York

City drivers will notice more red light cameras on city streets after the passage of a new bill.

The legislation, passed by the state Senate and Assembly, allows the city Department of Transportation to expand the camera program from 150 intersections to 600.

The bill, sponsored by State Senator Andrew Gounardes, will also renew the city’s red light camera program through December 1, 2027.

“The data speaks for itself: where we’ve installed red light cameras, red-light running and related crashes have dropped dramatically,” NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez said in a statement.

“This legislation will renew our redlight camera program and allow us to quadruple the number of intersections equipped with this critical safety tool, helping us fight back against the rise in red-light related tragedies we’ve seen across the city.”

New U.S. Dog Entry Regulations Soon

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mi. – U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) Office of Field Operations would like to inform travelers the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) requirements for dogs entering the U.S. will change August 1.

Dogs must:

• Changes to CDC requirements for dogs entering the U.S. will take effect August 1, 2024. Appear healthy upon arrival;

• Be at least six months of age;

• Be microchipped; and

• Be accompanied by a CDC Dog Import Form online submission receipt. Additionally, proof of rabies vaccination may be required based on where the dog has been in the last six months and whether the dog was vaccinated in the United States or elsewhere. For dogs arriving from countries with a high risk of dog rabies, they must be protected against rabies. “Regulating dog importation helps protect the health and safety of people and their pets,” said Port Director Donovan Delude. “The rabies variant carried by dogs was eliminated in the U.S. in 2007 and we’re working diligently in concert with the Center for Disease Control to prevent its reintroduction.”

According to the CDC, dog rabies is not controlled in over 100 countries, which is why there is an inherent risk in imported dogs. Travelers are advised to learn more about bringing a dog into the United States and to obtain all necessary documentation prior to departure. Visit CBP.gov/travel for additional information on animal imports and more.

New Jersey To Cut Over 200 School Jobs

NEW JERSEY — Despite millions in last-ditch funding signed by Gov. Phil Murphy to prevent job cuts and program reductions, several New Jersey school districts are moving forward with layoffs due to funding gaps. Over 200 school positions, from teachers to administrative roles, are being cut across the state, affecting districts from Essex to Cape May counties.

Murphy highlighted that the upcoming school year’s budget is the largest investment in public education in state history, aimed at fully funding the state’s school funding formula. However, many districts, such as West Orange and South Orange-Maplewood, still face significant budget shortfalls. These districts, along with others like Brick Township and Freehold Regional, are cutting numerous positions due to reduced state aid and inflationary pressures.

To address funding inequities, lawmakers have allocated $44.7 million in aid boosts for affected districts and allowed for increased property tax levies. Nonetheless, education officials continue to call for a comprehensive reevaluation of the school funding formula.

Children eligible for SIJ classification must file their petition by their 21st birthday. Many face challenges in filing on time due to juvenile court delays or other circumstances. Allowing SIJ petitioners to file in person provides an alternative to ensure timely receipt of their petition.

Implementation:

•Effective Date: This policy was initiated on March 30, 2023.

• Manual Update: The USCIS Policy Manual is being updated for transparency and consistency. For more information, contact the USCIS Contact Center or refer to the updated USCIS Policy Manual.

inventory updates, helping retailers stay on top of their stock levels and avoid overselling For business owners, the benefits of the NRS Self-Ordering Kiosk are numerous. By automating the ordering process, the Kiosk significantly reduces the need for manual order taking, allowing staff to focus on food preparation and customer service. This increased efficiency leads to faster order turnaround times and helps lower labor costs, as fewer employees are needed to manage the ordering process. Another significant advantage for retailers is the Kiosk’s upselling capabilities. Through strategic product placement and targeted suggestions, the Kiosk can encourage customers to add additional items to their orders, thereby increasing the average order value. This, combined with the reduced likelihood of order errors, contributes to a notable boost in sales.

Real Results, Real Value for Retailers

“The proof is in the numbers.” Kim M.,

another happy customer, shares, “After installing the self-ordering kiosk at our bagel store, we’ve seen fantastic results. There are no long lines; customers order, pay, and pick up their food quickly. Our staff can now focus on making great bagels and providing excellent service rather than taking orders. The kiosk has been a real time-saver!”

Amir Y., a gas station owner, experienced the benefits of the NRS Self-Ordering Kiosk firsthand. “Since we got the selfordering kiosk in our food area, things have really picked up at my gas station. Customers order and pay at the kiosk, and our kitchen staff can prepare the food promptly. We’ve seen a significant increase in food sales, and our customers appreciate the convenience.”

These success stories highlight the realworld impact of the NRS Self-Ordering Kiosk on various retail businesses. By streamlining operations, reducing wait times, and enhancing the overall customer experience, the Kiosk has proven a valuable asset for retailers looking to stay competitive in today’s fast-paced market.

The NRS Self-Ordering Kiosk is packed with features designed to cater to the needs of the US market, including flexible payment options, top-notch security, and reliability. For a limited time, we’re offering a free payment processing terminal with every Kiosk purchase.

Schengen Visa Fees Increasing In June

WASHINGTON, DC- The cost for a Schengen visa is going up by 12% in June. The change will take effect on June 11, 2024, raising the cost from €80 to €90 for adults and from €40 to €45 for children. The European Commission said fees remain “relatively low” compared to visa costs in other countries. For instance, a visa for the UK starts at €134 and the U.S. around €185.

A Schengen visa is required for non-EU citizens from countries that do not benefit from the EU/Schengen Area’s 90-day visafree rule. This includes nations such as South Africa, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and China. The visa allows holders to visit any of the 28 Schengen countries for up to 90 days within a six-month period for

tourism or family visits, but not for work. Citizens from countries like the U.S., Canada, the UK, and Australia can travel to the Schengen Area visa-free for short stays, up to 90 days in any 180-day period. However, anyone wishing to stay longer or for work purposes needs to apply for a different type of visa from the specific country they intend to visit.

Every three years, the European Commission assesses the Schengen visa fees and can adjust them based on various factors, including inflation rates and the average salary of civil servants in member states.

The latest proposal for a price hike was made on February 2, following a December meeting where the revision received overwhelming support from member states. While the basic fee for a Schengen visa is increasing, the cost to extend a Schengen visa will remain fixed at €30. The EU is planning to introduce a digital-only Schengen visa, which will allow applicants to apply online regardless of the Schengen country they intend to visit. This digital visa will replace the current sticker in passport
