Biden-Trump Presidential Debate : Biggest Moment So Far In US Polls
Atlanta: Joe Biden and Donald Trump are preparing for the biggest moment so far in the US election -- the first of two high-stakes debates that could upend the race. Today's showdown raises the campaigning to boiling point, with both camps escalating their increasingly personal attacks. "I think I have been preparing for it my whole life...We'll do very well," Trump tells right-wing network Newsmax in an interview on his debate preparation. The 2024 election looks close, with Trump enjoying a slight polling advantage in the all-important swing states, likely to be decided by a few hundred thousand votes across a handful of battlegrounds.
The rivals step onstage for the 90-minute clash, hosted by CNN in Atlanta, seeking to allay fears about serious political liabilities. Biden, 81, faces concerns about his mental sharpness, with voters more likely to bring up his age than Trump's, despite the Republican being just three years younger. Both have faltered and appeared muddled during public events, with Trump raising eyebrows over his rambling campaign speeches. Trump is also engulfed in controversy over his
Hollywood Crew Union Secures Pay Raise, AI Deal with Studios
A union representing Hollywood film and television crew said on Tuesday it has reached a tentative three-year deal with major studios that includes agreedon pay hikes and guardrails against the use of artificial intelligence (AI). The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) members, which include lighting technicians and costume designers, are to ratify the deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which represents Disney, Netflix, and others. The terms of the agreement include scale-rate increases of 7%, 4%, and 3.5% over the three-year term, the union said. On the AI front, the deal includes "language that ensures no employee is required to provide Al prompts in any manner that would result in the displacement of any covered employee." In late 2023, the SAG-AFTRA actors union and the studios reached a labor agreement which ended a near sixmonth dispute that had halted film and TV production.
inflammatory rhetoric and numerous criminal cases, as well as fears he would weaponize the presidency to settle personal scores.
Biden spends the week at Camp David preparing with mock debates, while Trump opts for informal policy roundtables and workshopping debate strategy with rally crowds. Aides encourage Trump to focus on his perceived strengths on the economy and crime, while Biden aims to paint Trump as unhinged and unfit for office. The Biden campaign releases an ad
saying Trump is preoccupied with "revenge" rather than helping voters, and the Democratic National Committee puts up billboards in Atlanta reminding voters that Trump is a convicted felon. "Come November, Georgians will head to the polls remembering that President Biden looks out for them, while white-collar crook Donald Trump will only look out for himself," says DNC spokesperson Jackie Bush. The Trump campaign, initially characterizing Biden as feeble and incompetent, changes tack to avoid
Supreme Court rejects claim White House limited free speech on social media
The Supreme Court has rejected a case claiming the Biden administration illegally coerced social media platforms into taking down posts about Covid-19 and the 2020 election that were

considered misinformation. Five social media users, along with the attorneys general from Louisiana and Missouri, had brought the case, saying the Biden administration's pressure on companies like Facebook and X, formerly Twitter, violated the constitutional right to free speech. In Wednesday's 6-3 ruling, the Supreme Court said the plaintiffs did not have the legal standing to sue.
The three most conservative justices opposed the decision, with Justice Samuel Alito publishing a blistering dissent that spanned 34 pages, where he wrote that this may be "one of the most important free speech cases to reach this court in years".
pardons veterans convicted under military ban on gay sex
US President Joe Biden has pardoned thousands of veterans who were convicted of crimes under a military law that banned gay sex for more than 60 years. The veterans were convicted under a provision of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, which criminalised
sodomy from 1951 to 2013. Mr Biden described the pardon as "righting an historic wrong". The US Congress had repealed the portion of the code that outlawed consensual sodomy in 2013.
This military provision is separate from the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" President Bill Clinton-era policy, which banned openly gay and lesbian Americans from serving in the military.
In a statement on Wednesday, President Biden said he was "using [his] clemency authority to pardon many former service members who were convicted simply for being themselves".
setting low expectations that would help the Democratic president. "We know that Joe Biden, after taking an entire week off, will be ready for this," senior Trump campaign advisor Jason Miller tells reporters.
Backed by right-wing media figures, Trump and his team push the baseless theory that Biden will be hyped up on performanceenhancing drugs. They also make insinuations of bias on the part of CNN, with Miller stating that Trump will emerge as the clear choice if "allowed" to set out his vision for America "without the blatant interference of CNN or the two moderators."
One of Biden's biggest vulnerabilities is border security, with Trump promising mass deportations and repeatedly bringing up killings by migrants. Trump is expected to invite family members of victims of migrant violence to Atlanta, although the debate itself will have no audience.
The Biden administration announces that new restrictions have brought illegal migrant crossings to their lowest levels in more than three years, undercutting immigration as an attack line.
Biden student debt relief halted by court challenges
Two federal courts have temporarily blocked key portions of US President Joe Biden's student loan debt relief and repayment plan.
The dual rulings blocks potential debt relief that millions of borrowers may have seen in less than a week.
The White House said it would "continue to vigorously defend" its forgiveness and repayment proposals.
More than one in 10 Americans hold federal student debt - and it is a major election issue for young voters.
To date, Mr Biden has approved nearly $150bn (£118bn) in relief affecting close to five million people - but largely through executive actions, and not via Congress.
The president's broader ambitions for mass relief have, however, been stymied, with the Supreme Court last year striking down a major proposal to cancel as much as $400bn in loans.
Monday's rulings deal a blow to Saving on a Valuable Education (Save), which the president has touted as "the most affordable student loan repayment plan ever".
Indian interference claims by Canadian legislators politically motivated, says envoy
India has said a report by Canadian legislators alleging interference by New Delhi is politically motivated and influenced by Sikh separatist campaigners. Already chilly bilateral ties cooled further last month when a group of parliamentarians, citing intelligence reports, alleged some elected Canadian officials had been "witting or semi-witting" participants in foreign interference operations.
India and China were the main foreign threats to Canada's democratic institutions, it said.
Sanjay Kumar Verma, India's envoy to Canada, said the report was biased, did not give a fair hearing to India and did not give an opportunity to cross-examine witnesses. "It has been influenced by antiIndia elements ... you need to come out with infallible evidence. I don't see any hint of that," he told Reuters.
Russia Begins ClosedDoor Trial For US Reporter On Spy Charges
Yekaterinburg: A shaven-headed Evan Gershkovich went on trial behind closed doors on Wednesday in a Russian court where the US journalist is facing accusations of espionage.
Prosecutors say the Wall Street Journal reporter gathered secret information on the orders of the US Central Intelligence Agency about a company that manufactures tanks for Russia's war in Ukraine. If convicted, he faces a sentence of up to 20 years.
Ukrainian President Zelensky Replaces Commander Of Joint Forces
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday he had appointed Brigadier-General Andriy Hnatov as commander of the Joint Forces of Ukraine's armed forces, replacing Lieutenant-General Yuri Sodol.
Zelenskiy's announcement, made during his nightly video address, followed a series of reports that Sodol had performed badly in Ukraine's more than two-year-old war against Russia.
Sanjay Kumar Verma's remarks were the first formal response by India to the report, which triggered demands by opposition legislators for the government to name those under suspicion
"This is all politically motivated ... if Canadian institutions are bent upon harm(ing) bilateral relations with India, that will happen." His remarks were the first formal response by India to the report, which triggered demands by
opposition legislators for the government to name those under suspicion.
New Delhi accuses Canada of harboring Sikh separatists who seek to create a homeland in India known as Khalistan.
Last year, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau cited credible allegations of Indian government involvement in the murder of a Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was gunned down in the Canadian province of British Columbia in June 2023.
"There is a lot of political space given to Khalistani terrorists in Canada and therefore I would expect them to have influenced the entire process through their representatives," Verma said.
The special committee of legislators, asked about Verma's criticism, said the "committee speaks to and through its reports" and noted it had spoken to the country's two intelligence agencies, the police service, the public safety ministry and studied 4,000 documents.
'High risk' of famine in Gaza persists, new UN-backed report says
A UN-backed assessment says almost half a million Palestinians across Gaza are still facing “catastrophic levels” of hunger and that a “high risk” of famine persists as long as the Israel-Hamas war continues and humanitarian access is restricted.
However, the report by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) says the available evidence does not indicate a famine is currently occurring in the north of the Palestinian territory.
The previous assessment in March had projected that one was imminent in the area. The amount of food and other aid allowed into the north has increased since then, and nutrition, water, sanitation and health services have been stepped up, the report says. But it warns that food availability in the south and central Gaza has been significantly reduced due to the closure of the Rafah border crossing and the displacement of more than one million people from the city of Rafah since early May, when Israel launched a ground operation there.
The UN WFP said the report “paints a stark picture of ongoing hunger” and showed the critical importance of sustained humanitarian access. UN officials have blamed the situation on Israeli military restrictions on aid deliveries, the ongoing hostilities and the breakdown of law and order.
North Korea Missile Explodes Midair After Launch, Claims S Korea
Seoul: North Korea test-fired what appeared to be a hypersonic missile off its east coast on Wednesday, but it exploded in midair, South Korea's military said.
The missile was launched from near the capital, Pyongyang, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said. Japan's Defence Ministry said the missile flew to an altitude of about 100 km (62 miles) and a range of more than 200 km.
Julian Assange lands in Australia a free man
Julian Assange has landed back home in his native Australia, after a plea deal allowed him to walk free from a London prison. There were emotional scenes at Canberra Airport, as the Wikileaks founder kissed his wife and hugged his father, his lawyers watching on, visibly moved.
"Julian needs time to recover, to get used to freedom," Stella Assange said at a news conference shortly after her husband arrived.
For the past 14 years, Assange has been in a legal battle with US officials who accused him of leaking classified documents, which they say put lives in danger.
Thirteen killed and parliament set ablaze in Kenya protests - medics
At least 13 protesters were killed during protests in Kenya, doctors say, and a section of parliament went up in flames as demonstrations against new tax proposals escalated on Tuesday.
Senior officials of South Korea, the United States and Japan held a phone call and condemned the launch as a violation of multiple U.N. Security Council resolutions and a serious threat to the peace and stability of the region and beyond.
South Korea's marine corps said its troops staged firing drills near the maritime border with the North for the first time since Seoul scrapped an inter-Korean military pact early this month. The drills were announced earlier in June.
U.S. Indo-Pacific Command also issued a condemnation and called on Pyongyang to refrain from further unlawful and destabilising acts.
"While we have assessed that this event does not pose an immediate threat to U.S. personnel, or territory, or to our allies, we continue to monitor the situation," it said in a statement.
An angry crowd broke through police lines to storm parliament in the capital Nairobi before setting parts of it ablaze. In an address on Tuesday evening, President William Ruto said all means would be deployed to "thwart any attempts by dangerous criminals to undermine the security and stability of our country".
Israeli strikes on Gaza City kill dozens, Hamas says
Two Israeli air strikes on buildings in Gaza City have killed at least 38 people and injured many more, Hamas says. The Israeli military said warplanes had struck Hamas military infrastructure sites and it would provide more details later. A spokesman for Gaza's civil defence said a residential block in the alShati area, one of Gaza's historic refugee camps, was hit several times. The other strike targeted houses in the al-Tuffah district, the Hamas-run government media office said.

Kharge reappoints Sam
Pitroda as
chairman of Indian Overseas Congress
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday reappointed Sam Pitroda as chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress, days after he had resigned from the post following some controversial remarks in the middle of Lok Sabha elections which the BJP termed as "racist". "Congress president has reappointed Sam Pitroda as chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress with immediate effect," AICC general secretary K C Venugopal said in a statement.
Kenya's U-Turn Over Tax Hikes After 22 Die In Violent Protests
Nairobi: Kenyan President William Ruto said Wednesday that a bill containing contentious tax hikes would "be withdrawn", dramatically reversing course after more than 20 people were killed in clashes with police and parliament was ransacked by protesters opposed to the legislation. The initially peaceful demonstrations were sparked last week by the 2024 finance bill -- which politicians passed Tuesday afternoon -- and took Ruto's administration by surprise as rallies gathered momentum across the country. But the Gen-Z-led protests spiralled into violence Tuesday when police fired live bullets at the crowds outside parliament, leaving the complex ransacked and partly on fire.
In 18th Lok Sabha, a rare gesture:
PM Narendra Modi, Leader of Opp Rahul Gandhi shake hands
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, set to be Leader of Opposition, shook hands today in parliament as they together welcomed the newly re-elected Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla, marking a fresh chapter in the 18th Lok Sabha. Rahul Gandhi is the third member of the Gandhi family
to take the post of the Leader of the Opposition. Mr Gandhi follows in the footsteps of his mother, Sonia Gandhi, who served from 1999 to 2004, and his father, Rajiv Gandhi, who was the Leader of the Opposition from 1989 to 1990. Pro-tem Speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab declared the election results after the Opposition, which had put forward Congress MP K Suresh as its candidate, chose not to push for a vote on the motion. Following the announcement, Prime Minister Modi and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju approached Mr Birla's seat in the front row of the treasury benches to escort him to the Speaker's chair. Accompanying them was Rahul Gandhi. "It is a matter of honour that you have been elected to this chair for the second time," PM Modi said, congratulating Mr Birla. "I congratulate you on behalf of the entire House and look forward to your guidance for the next five years. Your sweet smile keeps the entire House happy."
"I would like to congratulate you on behalf of the entire opposition and the INDIA alliance," said Rahul Gandhi. "You are the final arbiter of people's voice. The government may have political power, but Opposition also represents the voice of the people. Opposition would like to assist you in your work, I am confident you will allow us to speak in House."
India Received $120 Billion In Remittances In 2023: World Bank Report
Washington: India received $120 billion in remittances in 2023, almost twice the $66 billion received by Mexico in the same period, the World Bank said in a report released on Wednesday. China ($50 billion), the Philippines ($39 billion), and Pakistan ($27 billion) figure among the top five nations in the list released by the World Bank. The list showed remittances in 2023 after a period of strong growth during 20212022. The total was an estimated $656 billion.
China ($50 billion), the Philippines ($39 billion), and Pakistan ($27 billion) figure among the top five nations in the World Bank list
"Growing at 7.5 per cent, remittance flows to India touched $120 billion in 2023, reflecting the benefits of a deceleration in inflation and strong labour markets in the United States, the largest destination for India's skilled migrants, and other OECD destinations, as well as positive demand for skilled and less-skilled workers in the GCC countries (which, together, are the second largest destination for Indian migrants)," the World Bank said.
While the same external demand conditions could have favoured remittance flows to Pakistan, weak internal conditions due to a balance of payments crisis and economic difficulties caused remittances to plummet 12 per cent to $27 billion in 2023, compared with more than $30 billion in 2022, it said.
Top US Official: India Pursuing Reforms in Pannun Case
Allegations of murder-for-hire against Indian national Nikhil Gupta, accused by the US of conspiring with another Indian to kill Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, have prompted New Delhi to consider institutional reforms. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt M Campbell announced the development on Wednesday. Gupta, 53, was arrested in Czechia in June last year and extradited to the US this month. The US claims Gupta plotted
with an Indian government official to hire a 'hitman,' who turned out to be an undercover American federal agent. The official allegedly promised to drop a criminal case against Gupta in Gujarat in return for the killing. Gupta pleaded 'not guilty' in a New York federal court. Gupta has not requested consular access, but India is in touch with his family. If convicted, Gupta faces up to 20 years in prison. He previously claimed human rights violations during his imprisonment in Czechia, but the Indian Supreme Court dismissed his petition, citing respect for other nations' sovereignty. India has labeled Pannun a terrorist but disassociated from the plot. The External Affairs Ministry is investigating, stating the allegations are a "matter of concern." Campbell emphasized India’s cooperation but maintained the US will seek accountability.
No Toll on Poor Roads: Gadkari
Mr Gadkari was speaking at a global workshop on satellite-based tolling, set to be implemented over 5,000 km this financial year.
"If you don't provide good quality service, you should not charge toll...We are in a hurry to start tolling to collect user fees and protect our interest," the road transport and highways minister said. "You should collect the user fee where you provide the best quality road. If you collect toll on roads with potholes, mud, then there will be a backlash from people," he added.
System Preventing Delhi CM's Bail is Dictatorship: Sunita Kejriwal
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's wife Sunita on Wednesday alleged the whole system was trying to ensure that her husband does not come out of jail and stressed that all this is akin to "dictatorship" and "emergency".
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said that when there was a possibility of Kejriwal getting bail from the Supreme Court in a money laundering case, the BJP panicked and got him arrested in a "fake case" by the CBI. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday formally arrested Kejriwal in the alleged excise policy scam and sought five-day custody of the AAP national convener in the corruption case.
Fashion giant Shein closer to London listing
Chinese fast fashion firm Shein has filed initial paperwork taking it a step closer to listing on the London Stock Exchange, the BBC understands.
The online retail giant, which is based in Singapore but has extensive operations in China, filed the confidential papers with UK regulators recently, according to sources close to the process.
Shein became one of the biggest fashion retailers in the world during the pandemic, but has faced criticism over the environmental impact of its business model.
The firm has also come under fire for some of its working practices, which include allegations of forced labour in its supply chain – something the company denies.
Both Shein and the UK regulator, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), declined to comment on a potential London listing, which could value the company at about £50bn. A company wishing to sell its shares in the UK must first apply to the FCA for a prospectus containing detailed financial information to be approved.

New Delhi: (IANS) AI health startup Cloudphysician on Tuesday said that it raised $10.5 million in a Series A funding round led by Peak XV Partners, with participation from Elevar Equity and venture debt firm Panthera Peak.
The fresh funds will be used to propel the company’s growth and operations within India and expand into multiple emerging markets and established markets such as the US. "We aim to scale our business and continue transforming critical care delivery in India and global markets. Criminal charges recommended against Boeing
US prosecutors have recommended that the Department of Justice (DoJ) brings criminal charges against Boeing. It follows a claim by the DoJ that the plane maker had violated a settlement related to two fatal crashes involving its 737 Max aircraft which killed 346 people. Boeing declined to comment when contacted by the BBC but previously it has denied violating the deferred prosecution agreement.
The DoJ has until 7 July to make a final decision on whether to prosecute the company. The DoJ has declined to comment.
The recommendation is not a final decision and the details of any potential criminal action are not known, according to CBS, the BBC's US partner.
"This is a really critical decision that is coming up,” said Ed Pierson, who is the executive director of the Foundation for Aviation Safety and a former senior manager at Boeing. He told the BBC's Radio 4 Today programme: "There are issues with these aeroplanes. We’re seeing problems with these planes and I’m talking about 737 Max, 787 and it is reflective of the leadership." The plane crashes - both involving Boeing's 737 Max aircraft - occurred within six months of each other.
US moots one-stop screening with India at aviation summit
Washington: (IANS) A top US aviation security official on Tuesday called for a one-stop security screening arrangement with India to reduce duplication of efforts at both ends for passengers as part of a broader cooperation between the two countries in civil aviation.
"If we have a one-stop agreement with the government of India and with Delhi airport, we would not need to re-screen … passengers and their check bags would go from aircraft to aircraft in almost every situation," David Pekoske, head of the US Transportation Security Administration said at the start of a three-day India-US civil aviation summit here.
"This is a really powerful concept. It offers a number of important benefits. It raises global aviation security standards that need to flex and debounce the United States are more secure if there's a reverse agreement between the United States and India where US screening satisfies Indian requirements." US-bound passengers will be screened for security at the airport of embarkation in India, say Delhi, under this arrangement and when they land in the US and have a connecting domestic flight to another US destination, their checked-in baggage will transfer straight from their aircraft to the next. And likewise in the opposite direction, for India-bound passengers.
Sony India gets new boss
Gaurav Banerjee
Sony Pictures Networks India on Monday announced the appointment of former Disney executive Gaurav Banerjee as its managing director and CEO, effective on or before August 26, pending regulatory approvals.
Banerjee will succeed N.P. Singh, who will move into the role of non-executive chairman after a 25-year tenure, Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) said in a statement.
Singh will move into the new role only after Banerjee takes charge to support the transition through the end of the fiscal year.
Germany unveils new visa for nonEU citizens
The Chancenkarte, which opened for applications on 1 June, offers a new points-based system that rates applicants by specific criteria, including academic qualifications, language skills and past professional experience. "[The Opportunity Card] will make it easier and quicker for people with experience and potential to find a suitable job and get started," Nancy Faeser, Germany's Federal Minister of the Interior and Community, said in a statement to the BBC.
China and EU to hold talks on electric car tariffs
The risk of soaring Chinese electric car prices in the EU could be easing after both sides agreed to negotiate a planned series of import taxes.
Top officials from both regions spoke about the tariffs on a call on Saturday and agreed to discuss them further, though frictions remain.
The call marks the first time the two sides have agreed to negotiate since the EU threatened China with electric vehicle (EV) tariffs of up to 38%.
How Tech Firm Employee Planned And Executed Murder Of His Ex-Boss In US
Tyrese Haspil, a former assistant of tech mogul Fahim Saleh, killed his former boss to cover up his theft of $400,000 from the 33-year-old businessman.
Tyrese Haspil, a former assistant to tech mogul Fahim Saleh, has been convicted of murdering his boss in Manhattan in 2020. Prosecutors said Haspil killed Saleh to cover up his theft of $400,000 from the 33-year-old businessman. Saleh was a successful tech entrepreneur and CEO of Gokada, a Nigeria-based scooter startup. Haspil, 25, was found guilty of multiple charges, including first-degree murder, grand larceny, burglary, tampering with evidence, and concealment of a corpse. He faces 25 years to life in prison and will be sentenced on September 10. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg stated, “Tyrese Haspil tragically cut Mr. Saleh's life short – a man who
killed his boss Fahim Saleh in 2020
came from a close-knit immigrant family and followed his passions to become a successful entrepreneur. I hope the accountability delivered by today's verdict can provide comfort to Mr. Saleh's loved ones.” Haspil's scheme began in 2018, but turned deadly in July 2020. He
embezzled money to buy lavish gifts for his girlfriend. When Saleh discovered the theft in January 2020, Haspil agreed to a repayment plan but continued stealing through a fraudulent PayPal account. Concerned about further discovery, Haspil plotted Saleh’s murder. His online activity showed searches related to the crime. On July 13, 2020, Haspil entered an elevator with Saleh, tased him, and fatally stabbed him. The next day, Haspil dismembered Saleh's body with an electric saw, placing the parts in plastic bags. He was arrested four days later. Haspil’s defense argued he acted out of "extreme emotional disturbance" and fear his girlfriend would leave him if she discovered his embezzlement.
Abraham Lincoln's Wax Sculpture In US Melts As Temperatures Soar
New Delhi, India: A six-foottall wax statue of former US President Abraham Lincoln in Washington melted as the capital city's temperatures soared over the weekend.
The temperatures, which reportedly touched 37 degrees Celsius, disfigured the wax structure at the site of Camp Barker, a Civil War-era refugee camp that housed formerly enslaved and freed African Americans.
The statue's head was the first to surrender to the scorching heat, followed by the legs, BBC reported. Authorities are now repairing the sculpture.
The structure was a candle and a wax structure with a plaque that said, "Please blow out your wick within 1-2 minutes." The replica, commissioned by the non-profit organisation CulturalDC, was

Tesla Car Flips 7 Times After Crash, All Passengers Survive
New Delhi: Tesla CEO Elon Musk has reacted to a video showing a terrifying accident involving his company's Model Y car. The footage, shared on X, captured the electric SUV rolling over several times before landing. Miraculously, all passengers survived without serious injuries.
The billionaire reposted the video, writing, “Safety is our primary design goal.”
“That's why I bought my wife a Tesla. A little more than some sedans but it's saved the difference in gas savings and the car is the safest I could get!” a user wrote under the video.
Mr Musk's reaction came after a recent crash in Orange County, California, where a Tesla driver was reportedly speeding and crashed, causing the vehicle to flip into oncoming traffic, reported KTLA News.
Three people, including the Tesla driver, were hospitalised; their conditions were not immediately available.
Witnesses said the Tesla driver was driving at an estimated over 100 miles per hour. The crash involved six vehicles, with two overturning and trapping people inside. First responders extricated the victims, including the Tesla driver, and rushed them to the hospital.
scheduled to be placed at the site till September 2024. The organisation also commented on the incident and said, "Whether it's the state of the union, the upcoming election, or this record-level heat, we are all over it!
The statue was created by US-based artist Sandy Williams as part of the Wax Monument Series. It was placed at the site of Camp Barker, which now houses an elementary school.
An eye witness, who was waiting at a red light, recalled the car approaching at "over 100 miles" per hour. A worker heard the tyres screech and saw the crash unfold. Recounting the "scary" experience, he said, "Cars are flipping over right outside the window, and it takes you a little bit out of reality."
US Security Body Seeks Pact With India To End Rescreening Of Passengers
Washington: The US transport security body has sought a unique "one-stop agreement" with India to end the rescreening of passengers, asserting that the "really powerful" concept will raise global aviation security standards.
Addressing the India US Aviation Summit here on Tuesday, David Pekoske, Administrator of the US Transportation Security Administration (USTSA) said that the one-stop security concept is "very reachable" between the countries.
"I think very tangible and very reachable between India and the United States is one-stop security," he said.
"It's a concept that expedites the flow of passengers and baggage to their destinations by eliminating the duplication of security controls at transfer points," Pekoske said.
He said in the case of a one-stop agreement, passengers who reach an airport in another country and have
a connecting domestic flight would not need to be rescreened and their checked bags would go from aircraft to aircraft.
Terming it a "really powerful" concept, Pekoske said it raises global aviation security standards.
"Flights inbound to the United States are more secure.
If there's a reverse agreement between the United States and India where US screening satisfies Indian
requirements, that means that flights to India would also be more secure. It does require the regular exchange of information," he said.
"It requires improvements to security processes to maintain the agreement. It yields a reduction in security costs through better allocation of resources, reduces flight connection times and missed connections, and improves the passenger experience," he said.
Pekoske said the two countries should consider signing a memorandum of agreement to share sensitive security information.
"We have a category of classification of information that is not classified in the true sense of classified material, but it is sensitive enough that it needs additional protections," he said.
He said that whenever there is a sharing of sensitive security information -- which is critical to a growing partnership -- there is a need to have a memorandum of agreement which covers the aspects of that sharing arrangement.
Hindujas Made Staff Sleep in Windowless Basement: Report
Four members of Britain's richest family, the Hindujas have received jail sentences by a Swiss court on Friday for exploiting Indian staff at their Geneva mansion. The family members were accused of seizing the workers' passports, barring them from leaving the villa and forcing them to work very long hours for a pittance in Switzerland, among other things.
Prosecutors alleged that the Hinduja family had taken the passports of domestic workers and told them not to leave the villa, where they slept in bunk beds in a windowless basement room, according to a report by the Associated Press. According to the indictment, the workers were expected to be available at all times, including on trips to France and Monaco, where they worked under the same conditions.
The Swiss-Indian family's lawyer, Romain Jordan, rejected the allegations, calling them "exaggerated and biased allegations, the New York Times reported. Prosecutor accused the Hindujas of spending "more on their dog than on their domestic employees".

Astronaut Sunita Williams' Return From Space Delayed
The American space agency NASA has confirmed that the return of Indian origin astronaut Sunita Williams from the International Space Station (ISS) has been further delayed and no new date has been set for her "happy landing".
This comes as the spacecraft in which she travelled to space, the Boeing Starliner, has been facing a series of glitches. Sunita Williams and her copassenger Butch Wilmore are both safe on the ISS along with the seven other crew members who inhabit the "minicity in space" - the ISS. Riding atop the Boeing Starliner on its maiden mission, Ms Williams reached the ISS on June 5 on what was to be possibly a 10-day mission but since then it has been extended twice thanks to issues with the small rockets that help the crew module return to Earth, and a series of Helium leaks that bedevil the Boeing Starliner on its first crewed flight.

"The defendants confiscated the victim's immigration documents and subjected him to threats, physical force and mental abuse to coerce him to work long hours for minimal pay," she said. Denied an assurance that an opposition member would be given the post of Deputy Speaker, as is the tradition, the Congress and the INDIA bloc decided to force an election for the post of Speaker at the last minute by putting up K Suresh as its candidate against the BJP's pick, Om Birla, who was the Speaker in the previous Lok Sabha.

Mumbai: India is at the threshold of a major structural shift in its growth trajectory, highlighted Shaktikanta Das, Reserve Bank of India Governor, on Tuesday during his address at the 188th AGM (Annual General Meeting) of Bombay Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

Need Chinese Students In Humanities, Indian For Sciences: US Diplomat
Washington: The US should welcome more students from China, but to study the humanities rather than sciences, the second-ranked US diplomat said on Monday, noting that US universities are limiting Chinese students' access to sensitive technology given security concerns.
Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell said not enough Americans were studying science, technology, engineering and mathematics. He said the US needed to recruit more international students
The US diplomat said the US needed to recruit more international students for those fields, but from India - an increasingly important US security partner - not China.
for those fields, but from India - an increasingly important US security partner - not China.
For years, Chinese students have made up the largest foreign student body in the US and totaled nearly 290,000 in the 2022/23 academic year. But some in academia and civil society argue that deteriorating US-China relations and concerns about theft of US expertise, have derailed scientific cooperation and subjected Chinese students to unwarranted suspicion. "I would like to see more Chinese students coming to the United States to study humanities and social sciences, not particle physics," Campbell told the Council on Foreign Relations think-tank.
it is about the opposition signalling that things in Parliament will not remain as they were in 2014 and 2019.
The move to make Rahul Gandhi, who is arguably the Congress' most popular face, the Leader of the Opposition is also being seen as a step in that direction because this is the first time since 2014 that any opposition party has managed to cross the figure of 54 (10% of the Lok Sabha's strength) needed to stake claim to the post. Besides getting a cabinet rank, the Leader of the Opposition post will enable Mr Gandhi to strongly take up the issues of the people and the INDIA bloc at a time when the opposition parties are at their strongest in a decade. These are expected to include the alleged paper leaks in various examinations, including NEET-UG, which has seen major protests in several parts of the country and the Agnipath scheme for recruitment in the Army, which had emerged as a major election issue.

Government vs Mamata Banerjee Over Bangladesh Talks On Ganga, Teesta Waters
Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, objecting to the talks on water sharing between the Centre and Bangladesh -- a session the state was not invited to attend. Turning down the Centre's proposal for sharing of Teesta water and the renewal of the 1996 Ganga Water Treaty, expected to lapse in 2026, she wrote, "Such unilateral deliberations and discussions without consultation and the opinion of the state government is neither acceptable nor desirable". Government sources, though, called the Chief Minister's claim

Abortion Rights To Feature In BidenTrump's First
Presidential Debate
Washington: Two years after the US Supreme Court stripped constitutional protections for abortion, the explosive issue will feature prominently in Thursday's debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump -- with the Republican under pressure not to alienate voters.
On June 24, 2022, the high court -- with a super-conservative majority built under Trump's presidency -overturned the historic ruling in Roe
v. Wade that had protected abortion rights, placing the issue in the hands of the states.
That same day, a handful of US states banned abortions, forcing clinics to close in haste or move to more welcoming places.
The nation, already politically polarized, is now split between the states that have banned or significantly restricted access to the procedure -- and the states that have adopted new protections for a woman's right to terminate a pregnancy.
The Supreme Court's decision sent political shockwaves across the country, and had repercussions -- since the ruling, conservatives have lost nearly every referendum or vote revolving around abortion access. And some of those losses came in states that have recently shifted solidly to the right, such as Ohio, Alabama and Kansas.

"Are You Defending Lt Governor?" Supreme Court
The Supreme Court sharply criticized the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) for felling trees in Delhi's Ridge area, violating a court order. Justices AS Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan questioned if Lt Governor VK Saxena, DDA chairman, had directed the tree removal, suggesting accountability at the highest level. The court referenced the Sherlock Holmes story, indicating suspicion of an inside job. Justice Oka demanded a clear statement from the DDA vice-chairman and proposed a large-scale tree plantation drive in the capital. The court emphasized the need for strict adherence to environmental protection laws and included a clause in future DDA contracts prohibiting tree felling without court permission. Contempt notices were issued to officers involved, and the court highlighted concerns about judicial officers serving as DDA legal advisors, questioning the independence of the judiciary. In today's fast-paced business environment, maintaining a balance between professional responsibilities and personal well-being is essential for effective leadership. As a business leader, I have found that integrating yoga into my daily routine has been transformative, not only for my health but also for my leadership skills. Yoga offers a holistic approach to wellness that can significantly benefit business leaders and CXOs, helping them navigate the challenges of their roles with greater clarity and resilience.
1. Enhancing Mental Clarity
One of the most profound benefits of yoga is its ability to enhance mental clarity. The practice of asanas (physical postures) combined with pranayama (breathing exercises) helps calm the mind and reduce stress. For leaders, this mental clarity is crucial for making informed decisions and managing complex situations. Personally, I have found that starting my day with a yoga session clears my mind and prepares me for the demands of the day ahead.
How to prevent backache?
Good posture
Posture plays a very important as in helping our muscles and bones stay within the center of gravity. Avoid sitting, standing or sleeping in a bad posture as it strains both the muscles and the bones which may in-time change the structure of the spine, contributing to back pain.
Have a healthy weight
Being overweight causes strain on our bones and joints, which contributes to backache. Try to watch your diet to prevent gaining weight.
Have toned muscles
Have toned abdominal and the back muscles. If you have strong muscles, your back will be well supported and this will help you keep a good posture as well.
Exercise regularly
Exercising regularly and correctly prevents stiffness of back muscles. This will also help ease our stressed muscles, preventing backache.
Lift objects carefully
Most people who throw out their back do so by attempting to lift an object incorrectly. Lifting puts more stress on your back than any other activity, so be careful while lifting objects, especially heavy ones.

2. Starting the Day with Yoga
Incorporating yoga into your morning routine can set a positive tone for the rest of the day. My day starts with an hourlong yoga session that includes Surya Namaskar, Ashtanga, and Hatha yoga poses. This routine not only strengthens my body but also energizes my mind. By dedicating the early hours to self-care, I ensure that I am physically and mentally prepared to tackle any challenges that come my way.
3. Promoting Physical Wellness
Yoga is a versatile practice that can be

performed anywhere, without the need for any equipment. This makes it an ideal choice for busy professionals who may not have the time or inclination to visit a gym. Post my kidney transplant surgery, yoga has been instrumental in my recovery and ongoing physical wellness. It has helped me regain strength and flexibility, ensuring I stay in optimal health to lead effectively.
4. Stress Management
The pressures of running a business can often lead to significant stress. Yoga provides effective tools for managing this stress through deep breathing exercises and meditation. These
This Anti-Inflammatory Diet Can Help With Fatigue, Low Mood And More
What is an anti-inflammatory diet?
“Simply put, an anti-inflammatory diet focuses on foods to help reduce chronic inflammation in the body,” says registered dietitian Marisa Moore. Moore goes on to note that chronic inflammation is associated with health conditions like heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and certain cancers.
“Many people use the umbrella term to describe a diet that doesn’t exacerbate autoimmune conditions,” says Jessica Wilson, MS, RDN. A healthy diet that avoids processed options in favour of whole foods is usually enough to keep the body balanced. But should you suspect that internal inflammation is getting the better of you, a diet designated for its anti-inflammatory effects may be worth exploring.
practices help to decompress and maintain a balanced perspective, which is essential for leaders who must remain calm and composed, even in high-pressure situations.
5.
Building Resilience
Yoga teaches discipline and resilience, qualities that are invaluable for business leaders. The consistent practice of yoga fosters a sense of inner strength and perseverance. This resilience has been particularly evident in my own journey through health challenges and in leading CashKaro to new heights. By cultivating resilience through yoga, leaders can navigate obstacles with grace and determination.
6. Fostering Empathy and Connection
Leadership is not just about making strategic decisions; it's also about understanding and connecting with your team. During the Covid-19 lockdowns, I began hosting online yoga sessions for CashKaro employees. This initiative not only promoted physical wellness but also strengthened our team bond. Sharing my experiences with yoga and wellness has made me a more empathetic leader, fostering a culture of care and support within the organization.
Salmon and sardines
Fish, seeds and nuts are anti-inflammatory essentials. “Omega-3 fatty acids can play a role in mediating (moderating and/or lessening) an inflammatory response in the body,” says Wilson. Fatty fish like mackerel and tuna — along with flaxseeds, chia seeds and various nuts — can also provide your daily dose of omega-3. “Regular consumption of nuts is associated with lower levels of inflammation and reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases,” confirms Sakaida.
Green tea
Your afternoon iced matcha just got even more appealing. Dr. Andrew Weil (creator of the aforementioned Dr. Weil Anti-inflammatory diet) recommends drinking green tea for its protective antioxidants. Green tea’s high volume of catechins (a.k.a. flavonoids, a class of polyphenol found in plants) are thought to fight inflammation. If you’re a fan of matcha — hyper-concentrated, high-quality green tea powder — even better.
Berries
The berry-girl lifestyle is more than a romantic approach to make-up; it’s also a means of balancing the body and eliminating oxidative stress, which can trigger inflammation. Berries like raspberries, blackberries and blueberries contain protective phytonutrients that Dr. Weil recommends to prevent and ease inflammation. Plus, they’re delicious and easy to incorporate into your routine via snacking, smoothies, and throw-on salad toppings.
Whole grains
Fibre is thought to reduce inflammation (along with cholesterol and blood sugar) by balancing your gut pH and permeability. And, as we’ve learned, a happy gut makes for a healthier brain. “Whole grains — such as oats, quinoa and brown rice — are high in fibre, vitamins and minerals, which can all help reduce inflammation,” says Sakaida. “They are also associated with a lower risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.”
Turmeric
While a number of herbs and spices are linked to lower inflammation, turmeric reigns supreme. You can thank the polyphenol curcumin, the root’s active compound, for its antioxidant effects. Opt for a golden-milk latte, scatter over a salad, or simply incorporate the spice into your daily dishes for an instantaneous immune boost — and improved digestion.

Suryakumar, Bumrah Star in India’s Super Eight Win
Mr Das said addressing an international conference on financial resilience at the RBI's College of Supervisors in Mumbai. Restrictions on unsecured lending were the result of a view that there could be a potential problem in the credit market because of growth in unsecured lending, he said.
The overall headline parameters were looking good, but there was "clear evidence" of dilution of underwriting standards, lack of proper appraisals, and a mentality to join the bandwagon for driving up the unsecured lending among some lenders, he added.
"We thought if left unattended, these vulnerabilities can become a bigger problem. So, we thought it is better to act in advance and slow down the credit growth," Mr Das said.

Trump promises Green Cards to foreign students on graduation
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in a podcast released on Thursday said that students graduating from U.S. colleges should get a green card to stay in the country, a proposal that runs counter to his hardline immigration stance.
During the All-In podcast hosted by Silicon Valley tech investors, angel investor Jason Calacanis told Trump that the U.S. needs to be able to legally retain more high-skilled workers, a major issue for the tech industry.
"Can you please promise us you will give us more ability to import the best and brightest around the world to America?"

Calacanis said. "I do promise," Trump said. "But I happen to agree, otherwise I wouldn't promise... You graduate from a college, I think you should get automatically as part of your diploma a green card to be able to stay in this country and that includes junior colleges too."
A green card, also known as a permanent resident card, allows individuals the right to live and work permanently in the United States and is a step towards citizenship. It was not clear if Trump was referring to all foreigners, including those who came to the United States illegally or overstayed their visas, or only those people on student visas.

Once worn only at major Bollywood or international events, these clothes are now making a significant comeback as everyday fashion globally.
While red carpets have long been the domain of opulent European haute couture, a multicoloured array of traditional Indian pieces like saris, lehengas, and anarkali suits gained widespread attention at this year’s starstudded events such as the Met Gala and Cannes Film Festival.
Sonam C Chhabra, who made her debut at the Cannes Film Festival this year, couldn’t be happier with the overwhelming response from her fans and followers about her choice of traditional Indian attire. She says, “I noticed a growing sense of curiosity and admiration amongst the global fashion fraternity for our Indian attire while at the Paris Fashion Week and Cannes Film Festival.”
Over the years, major global designers and brands like YSL, Dior, John Galliano, and Chanel have drawn inspiration from Indian styles, says celebrity stylist Akshay Tyagi, incorporating elements like the sari into their designs which then get amplified on social platforms. The vintage sari-inspired Chanel dress Naomi Campbell wore to the 2023 Met Gala is a prime example. Bollywood costume designer and stylist Niharika Bhasin attributes this to the sari’s versatility in modern fashion and the impact of social media in amplifying these looks globally. “It is now being styled in various innovative ways, including dress forms and unique draping techniques after going viral on social platforms,” she says.
Concurring, Tyagi noted that when a trend becomes a sensation on social media, it quickly gains widespread popularity.
This renaissance is clearly being catalysed by international content creators. German content creator Silky, who has 157,000 followers on Instagram alone, spoke to indianexpress.com about the response to her posts featuring traditional Indian garments from her global audience. She says, “It’s been so lovely and positive! Whenever I post content wearing Indian attire, people always
seem to love it.”
Fashion creator Vishnupriya says she noticed a growing trend where people from different countries are inspired to create content using saris after watching her videos.
Personalisation and accessibility
Understanding garments and personalising them according to individual styles has inspired people, with social media amplifying the trend of sharing such looks online.
Sumit Arora, chief of ethnic apparel at Fabindia, highlights how social platforms are popularising diverse ways of wearing traditional Indian clothes.
Sahib Singh Bhatia of Amaare notes that for designers, this social mediadriven crossover provides an infinite canvas. While lehengas experiment with bold patterns on platforms like Instagram and Pinterest, the sari continues to effortlessly transition between formal and casual styles, often going viral.
Balancing tradition and contemporary fashion
Bhasin, who has worked on several prominent Bollywood films, has witnessed the global embrace of Indian designs through cinema and social media amplification. “Indian films have served as a powerful medium for showcasing traditional attire and contemporary fashion to international audiences, which is then further spread through viral moments and sharing on social platforms, reaching audiences globally.”
Balancing traditional elements with contemporary fashion trends involves a thoughtful and creative approach, says Khanna. “I strive to maintain the essence of traditional Indian craftsmanship while incorporating modern silhouettes, fabrics, and styling techniques. This fusion creates pieces that resonate with both traditional and modern aesthetics and get attention on social media.”
Reshaping global fashion aesthetics
Social media creators and influencers worldwide are at the forefront, showcasing and celebrating Indianinspired styles on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. This amplification is fueling global attention, making traditional Indian clothing — from red carpets to everyday fashion — a favorite among modern fashion enthusiasts.

Utility Company Proposes Reduced Gas Bills For Customers
NEW JERSEY PSE&G customers in New Jersey could see their gas bills drop this fall if state officials approve a proposal submitted by the company. The proposal, filed with the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, aims to lower gas bills for residential customers by 6.1 percent, effective October 1. The proposed decrease is attributed to “less volatile commodity prices,” according to the company. Dave Johnson, PSE&G’s Chief Customer Officer, stated, “This is an opportunity to lower our gas supply rate, providing our customers with a little bill relief and helping to maintain affordability.” If approved, the Basic Gas Supply
Service rate for Garden State customers will decrease by 7 cents per therm to approximately 32.8 cents per therm. For a residential customer using an average of 100 therms per month, this would result in a monthly gas bill of about $102.70, a reduction of $6.75 from the current rate. This would place PSE&G’s gas bills among the lowest in the state. PSE&G encourages customers who need help paying their utility bills to utilize available assistance programs, with information accessible online. Customers can also enroll in an equal payment plan to manage costs and avoid seasonal fluctuations. As of February 2024, PSE&G served 2.4 million electric customers and 1.9 million gas customers.

Updated LGBTQ Guide Published By Hindu American Foundation
NEW YORK, NY – The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) has updated its brief on LGBTQ rights, placing contemporary discussions within a traditional framework. This brief highlights Hindu medical treatises, which view gender and sexuality with nuance, treating gender as an attribute distinct from sex. According to HAF, humans can be categorized into three main gender traits: feminine, masculine, or third-natured, with the third category further divided into seven general and over 40 specific categories based on biological sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, physical capability, and sexual interests. HAF aims to promote nuanced, compassionate perspectives grounded in spiritual principles, beyond political polarization. The first edition, published in 2015, marked a significant step as few Hindu organizations openly discussed LGBTQ issues. HAF hopes this updated guide will reflect current understandings and foster broader acceptance within the Hindu community and beyond, supporting LGBTQ rights from a spiritually grounded standpoint.

New Law Causes Sharp Decline In Florida Medicaid Spending On Undocumented Immigrants
TALLAHASSEE, FL — Florida’s Medicaid spending on emergency health care for undocumented migrants has significantly decreased after Governor Ron DeSantis initiated a crackdown on illegal immigration during his presidential primary campaign. A new law requires hospitals accepting Medicaid to ask patients about their immigration status, potentially deterring migrants from seeking care. This policy led to a 54% drop in expenditures billed to Medicaid from Florida’s Emergency Medical Assistance program since the law took effect in July 2023, according to a POLITICO analysis.
Although there is no direct evidence linking the drop in spending to the law, Thomas Kennedy from the Florida Immigrant Coalition noted signs of fallout, including an exodus of migrants
from Florida and workforce shortages. Federal law mandates limited Medicaid coverage for undocumented immigrants during medical emergencies. However, data showed that $148.4 million was spent on emergency coverage for immigrants in the year before the law, compared to $67 million this year.
Leonardo Cuello from Georgetown University highlighted the risk of pregnant women avoiding hospitals due to the law, potentially leading to adverse long-term consequences. The DeSantis administration has also allocated substantial budget resources to address illegal immigration, further emphasizing the financial burden on Florida’s healthcare system.

Indian Congressmen Unhappy With Biden’s H-1B And Green Card Stand
Lawmaker Ro Khanna
Lawmakers have been talking about the urgent need to work towards the severe backlog affecting Indian professionals seeking Green Cards and navigating H-1B visa issues. But at the recent Tech Immigration Summit, it was highlighted that the Biden administration has not taken anything concrete to escalate the EAGLE Act to address the decadeslong backlog for immigrants. Indian-
American lawmaker Ro Khanna at the summit said he feels “disappointed” with the House’s ignorance of the bipartisan bill.
Hosted by the Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora (FIIDS), the summit put the spotlight on the critical impact of the seven per cent country quota on Green Card issuance.
The EAGLE Act legislation is meant to overhaul the immigration system by eliminating the per-country limit on employment-based Green Cards and increasing the limit on familysponsored Green Cards from 7% to 15%.
The White House has thrown its weight behind the bill, recognizing its potential to alleviate the protracted backlog that has ensnared hundreds of thousands of immigrants, predominantly from India and China.
