US Presidential Election 2024 And Its Double India Connection
Four years ago, it was Kamala Harris, who created history when she became the US Vice President. This time, there's another individual with roots in India. It's Usha Vance, the wife of JD Vance, who is former President Donald Trump's running mate.
It's been an eventful month in US politics ahead of the November 5 presidential elections. First, President Joe Biden came under severe criticism for what many described as an abysmal performance in the first presidential debate. And then, last Saturday, his Republican counterpart Donald Trump was shot at during a rally in Pennsylvania. The former president survived the attack with a minor injury on his ear.
As the world prepares for what's likely to be a neck-and-neck contest between the two candidates, there's another aspect of these elections worth taking note of - its India connection.
Four years ago, it was Kamala Harris, who created history when she became the US Vice President. This time,
Trump security boosted weeks ago over Iran plot to kill him
Protection for Donald Trump was boosted several weeks ago after US authorities learned of an Iranian plot to kill him, according to national security officials.
Officials say there is no known connection between the alleged Iranian plot and the assassination attempt on the former president on Saturday in Pennsylvania.
However, the disclosure that security had been tightened raises further questions over how Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, was able to climb a building and get close enough to fire at Trump. The US Secret Service and the Trump campaign were notified of the Iranian threat, and security was increased as a result, according to a US national security official.
Senator Bob Menendez found guilty in bribery scheme
New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez has been found guilty on 16 counts tied to a scheme where he accepted bribes, including gold bars and a Mercedes-Benz, in exchange for helping foreign governments.
A jury convicted Menendez of all charges after more than 12 hours of deliberation over three days. The trial lasted nine weeks. Menendez - formerly the head of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee - now faces the prospect of decades in prison.

there's another individual with roots in India. It's Usha Vance, the wife of JD Vance, who is former President Donald Trump's running mate.
Kamala Harris traces her roots in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu where her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was born. Ms Shyamala went to the US as a teenager to pursue a PhD at the
University of California, Berkeley. There, she met Donald J. Harris, and the two got married in 1963. They had two daughters, Kamala Harris (born 1964) and Maya.
Meanwhile, Usha Chilukuri Vance was born to immigrant parents from Chilakaluripeta, Andhra Pradesh. She graduated from Yale University with a degree in History, then earned her M.Phil in Early Modern History from Columbia University, and a JD in Law from Yale Law School. She has worked in prestigious law firms and at the US Supreme Court as a legal clerk.
If Biden wins, Kamala Harris will continue her role as Vice President. However, if Trump and Vance emerge victorious, Usha Vance will become the Second Lady and will live at the Naval Observatory.
Biden calls for ban on
gun used to shoot Trump
After a pause in campaigning following the attack, Joe Biden resumed his criticism of Donald Trump in Tuesday night's speech
Joe Biden has renewed a call for Congress to ban assault rifles, including the model that was used in the failed assassination attempt on Donald Trump. Trump's ear was grazed by a bullet after a gunman shot at him from a nearby rooftop during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.
“An AR-15 was used in the shooting of Donald Trump. This was the assault weapon that killed so many others, including children. It’s time to outlaw them,” Mr Biden told the audience at a convention in Las Vegas. His demand came as he returned to the campaign trail for the first time since the attack. For several days following the shooting, the Biden campaign had been on pause. Verbal attacks had been halted, television ads pulled and a message of unity was pushed by many prominent Democrats. Speaking on Tuesday, Mr Biden continued in that vein, lamenting how “heated” politics has become. But he went on to roundly criticise Trump throughout the speech at the convention of the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People, a prominent civil rights group.
Trump Recalls Assassination Attempt, Says Bullet "Felt Like World's Largest Mosquito"
A video recording of a private phone call between former US President Donald Trump and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was leaked on social media earlier this week.
The clip, which was first shared on X by Bobby Kennedy III, offers a first-person account of how Mr Trump remembers his July 13 assassination attempt. In the video, he revealed that the gunshot injury "felt like the world's largest mosquito," and
Musk to Move X and SpaceX HQs to Texas
Elon Musk said Tuesday that he would move the headquarters of two of his businesses, social media platform X and rocket manufacturer SpaceX, to Texas, escalating an increasingly contentious fight with California. Musk blamed a California law, signed Monday by Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, that bars school districts from requiring teachers to notify parents if their children change their gender identification. Musk called the law “the final straw” and said he had warned Newsom that such legislation would “force families and companies to leave California to protect their children.”
China tycoon Guo convicted in US over $1bn scam
Self-exiled Chinese businessman Guo Wengui has been convicted by a US court of defrauding his online followers in a billion-dollar scam. He was found guilty on nine of the 12 criminal counts he faced, including racketeering, fraud and money laundering.
Guo's sentencing has been scheduled for 19 November, when he could face decades behind bars. He has been in prison since his arrest in March 2023.
expressed his shock when he found out that the gunman fired an AR-15. He also recalled his conversation with President Joe Biden after the shooting. "It was very nice actually. He called me, and he said, 'How did you choose to move to the right?'" Mr Trump told RFK Jr. "I said, 'I was just showing a chart, I didn't have to tell him the chart was on all the people pouring into our country," he continued. Further, Mr Trump went on to say that the gunshot injury "felt like the world's largest mosquito". Donald Trump was hit in the ear in an apparent assassination attempt by a gunman at a campaign rally today in Pennsylvania on Saturday. The 78-year-old former president was rushed off stage with blood streaked across his face after the shooting, while the shooter and a bystander were killed and two spectators were critically injured.
He is a critic of the Chinese Communist party and was an associate of Stephen Bannon, an exWhite House chief strategist under former president Donald Trump. Guo goes by several aliases, including Miles Guo, Miles Kwok and "Brother Seven". He was named as Ho Wan Kwok when he was indicted in 2023.
Prosecutors said Guo raised more than $1bn (£770m) from online followers, who joined him in investment and cryptocurrency schemes between 2018 and 2023. The money he raised was used to fund Guo's lavish lifestyle which included a 50,000 square foot mansion, a $1m Lamborghini and a $37m yacht, they said.
"Thousands of Guo's online followers were victimised so that Guo could live a life of excess," the US Attorney in Manhattan, Damian Williams, said after the verdict.

Ex-minister Priti Patel likely to contest to replace Rishi Sunak as UK Opposition Leader
As part of her leadership plans, Patel is believed to have appointed a treasurer for her campaign and former Conservative Campaign Headquarters (CCHQ) staff with experience of past leadership elections
Britain’s former home secretary, Priti Patel, is expected to contest the Conservative Party leadership race to replace Rishi Sunak as Opposition Leader in the House of Commons. According to UK media reports, the 52-year-old British Indian member of Parliament is considering throwing her hat in the ring after she won her Witham, Essex, seat with a comfortable margin even as her party suffered its worst defeat in the general election earlier this month. Sunak, 44, had announced his resignation on July 5 as the Labour Party landslide win unfolded and will attend the State Opening of Parliament on Wednesday as interim Opposition Leader until the election process for his successor has been finalised by the powerful 1922 Committee of backbench Tory MPs. “Priti has kept a low profile and done her best to support others, she feels colleagues also need time to digest the general election result and don’t want posturing in the media from

China Suspends Arms Talks with U.S., Cites Taiwan Arms Supply
China on Wednesday said it has suspended the crucial arms control and non-proliferation talks with the US, accusing Washington of continuing arms sales to Taiwan.
Announcing this, Chinese Foreign
Ministry Spokesman Lin Jian said the US continued sales of weapons to selfruled Taiwan, which China claims as a rebel province that must be reunified with the mainland, even by force.
He said that despite Beijing’s opposition, the US actions had “severely damaged the political atmosphere necessary for continued arms control consultations between the two sides”.
“China has decided to suspend talks with the US on holding a new round of arms control and non-proliferation consultations,” Lin told a media briefing here. “The responsibility for this situation lies entirely with the US,” he said, squarely blaming Washington for the disruption of the talks.
HRW: Hamas, Others Committed War Crimes on October 7
Hamas and at least four other Palestinian armed groups committed numerous war crimes and crimes against humanity against civilians during the 7 October attack on southern Israel, the campaign group Human Rights Watch says.
A new report accuses the hundreds of gunmen who breached the Gaza border fence of violations including deliberate and indiscriminate attacks on civilians, wilful killing of persons
in custody, sexual and gender-based violence, hostage-taking, mutilation of bodies and looting.
It also found the killing of civilians and hostage-taking were “central aims of the planned attack” and not an “afterthought”.
Hamas angrily rejected what it called HRW’s “lies” and demanded an apology. About 1,200 Israelis and foreignersmostly civilians - were killed and 251 others were taken as hostages when more than Israeli communities and towns, as well as number of military bases, two music festivals and a beach party were attacked nine months ago.
Israel responded by launching a military campaign in Gaza with the aims of destroying Hamas and freeing the hostages.

Patel, who also served as Indian Diaspora Champion in former prime minister David Cameron’s government, swore her oath as a re-elected MP in the House of Commons on the ‘Bible’ last week. “It is an honour to once again be elected to Parliament by the great people of the Witham constituency, and it was a privilege to swear the Oath of Allegiance to His Majesty the King,” Patel said in a statement on social media.
Patel, whose parents are of GujaratiUgandan descent, has served as international development secretary and home secretary in former Tory Cabinets under Theresa May and Boris Johnson. She was conferred a Damehood in the latter's resignation honours list, moving to the backbenches under Rishi Sunak’s premiership and often voicing criticism of his government’s high taxation policies.

T-shirts showing Trump after shooting pulled in China
Chinese e-commerce platforms have taken down t-shirts featuring an image of Donald Trump pumping his fist into the air moments after he was shot at.
The T-shirts, which went on sale within hours of the shooting, were available on popular e-commerce sites like Taobao and JD.com. It is unclear why the listings were taken down, but the Chinese internet is heavily controlled, with content considered "sensitive" routinely taken down.
The assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania rally last Saturday sparked widespread discussion online, with related hashtags trending high on X-like platform Weibo. Enterprising Chinese retailers leapt into action, with the first batch of T-shirts printed and put up for sale online less than three hours after the shooting. A cached image on Taobao, one of China's largest e-commerce sites, shows the T-shirt priced at 39 yuan ($9; £7).
A 25-year-old Taobao retailer told South China Morning Post that she received more than 2,000 orders for the T-shirts a mere three hours after she put it up for sale.

Visitors can stay in the South-East Asian nation for up to 60 days under the new scheme that took effect on Monday, Previously, passport holders from 57 countries were allowed to enter without a visa.
Tourism is a key pillar of the Thai economy, but it has not fully recovered from the pandemic.
Thailand recorded 17.5 million foreign tourists arrivals in the first six months of 2024, up 35% from the same period last year, according to official data. However, the numbers pale in comparison to pre-pandemic levels.
Six tonnes of cocaine found in banana shipment
Sniffer dogs in Ecuador have found 6.23 tonnes of cocaine hidden in a banana shipment, police say.
The dogs alerted their handlers, who seized 5,630 parcels filled with a white substance that later tested positive for cocaine. The shipment was destined for Germany, officials said, and would have been worth $224m (£173m) had it reached its destination.
Five people had been arrested following
the discovery, according to the prosecutor-general's office.
Police said they had found the massive cocaine haul during a routine inspection of container stored at Posorja deepwater port south-west of Ecuador's largest city, Guayaquil.
The cocaine parcels had been hidden beneath crates of bananas destined for export. One of those arrested in connection to the drug discovery was a representative of the export company responsible for the shipment, whom prosecutors said had been present at the inspection and gave officials the names of the four other suspects.
They include the managers of the banana plantation where the cocaine is suspected to have been added to the fruit shipment, as well as the driver who took the container to the port.
EU says X’s blue tick accounts deceive users
Elon Musk's social media site X has been accused by the European Union of breaching its online content rules, with its "verified" blue tick accounts having the potential to "deceive" users.
The bloc's tech regulator said users could be duped into thinking the
identity of those with blue tick marks was verified, when in fact anybody can pay for a blue tick. It said it had found evidence of "malicious actors" abusing the system. The investigation began under the EU's DSA.
It could lead to X being fined up to 6% of its global annual turnover and being forced to change how it operates in the bloc.
Mr Musk reacted angrily: "The DSA is misinformation," he wrote on X.
The billionaire, who bought the platform for $44bn in 2022, said the DSA rules amounted to "censored speech" which he said he found unacceptable.
Disney investigating massive leak of internal messages
Disney has confirmed it is investigating an apparent leak of internal messages by a hacking group, which claims it is "protecting artists' rights".
The group, Nullbulge, said it had gained access to thousands of communications from Disney employees and had downloaded "every file possible".
It is not clear how commercially sensitive the information is for the media and theme park giant, but it is reported to include messages about upcoming projects the firm is working on.
"Disney is investigating this matter,” a company spokesperson told the BBC in an email.
Nullbulge's website says the group targets anyone it believes is harming the creative industry by using content
Tata Steel may invest more in UK
Tata Steel has hinted at a higher investment in the UK amid calls from the unions for a bigger commitment from the company in the backdrop of a changing political landscape in the country.
The company has committed to build a 3-million-tonne environment friendly electric arc furnace for £1.25 billion, which includes a government grant of £500 million, after closing down heavy end assets (coke oven and blast furnaces). The process will render 2,800 workers jobless, triggering protests from unions who want the Tatas to make a bigger commitment to save jobs.
Russia antivirus firm Kaspersky quits US after ban
generated by artificial intelligence (AI), which it describes as "theft".
The BBC has made contact with the hackers who claim to be in Russia and say they got into Disney's internal Slack messaging system through an insider.
But when asked for a sample of the stolen data to verify its authenticity, the hackers did not respond - meaning the BBC has not been able to independently assess if the huge data trove is genuine.
"Disney was our target due to how it handles artist contracts, its approach to AI, and its pretty blatant disregard for the consumer," the hackers claimed. They said they released the data because they didn't expect Disney to meet their demands to stop using AI.
It is unusual for hackers to claim they are "Russian hacktivists" with an ethical agenda - most cyber criminals, including those in Russia, aim to make money by extorting their victims.
The leak was first reported in the gaming press and then picked up by the Wall Street Journal, which said some of the leaked material related to advertising campaigns and interview candidates, with some dating back as far as 2019.
Russian antivirus giant Kaspersky Labs has told BBC News that it is leaving the US after the Biden administration banned sales and distribution of the firm's software. Kaspersky said it had made the "sad and difficult decision" to leave "as business opportunities in the country are no longer viable". It comes after Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said last month that Moscow's influence over the company posed a significant risk to US infrastructure and services.

FIFA Seeks Club World Cup Broadcast Bids 11 Months Before US Event
Just 11 months before the inaugural 32team Club World Cup in men's soccer, FIFA invited bids for rights to broadcast the 63-game tournament to be staged in the United States. FIFA on Monday published an "invitation to tender in the Americas, Asia, and Middle East and North Africa" weeks after talks with tech giant Apple over an exclusive global rights deal reportedly hit trouble. FIFA said a second phase of rights sales for the 2025 and 2029 Club World Cups will follow in Europe. Soccer's wealthiest and strongest continent will send 12 teams including key attractions Real Madrid, Manchester City and Bayern Munich to the revamped tournament scheduled next June 15 to July 13.
Kapil Dev Named President of Professional Golf Tour of India
World Cup-winning former India cricket captain Kapil Dev has taken over as the new President of the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI), an elevation that marks a fresh beginning for the iconic player who also excelled as an amateur golfer. The 65-year-old, who was already a member of the PGTI Board as its Vice President, was chosen unanimously and would be taking over from incumbent H R Srinivasan, whose tenure has come to an end. Kapil is known to be a keen golfer, whose handicap was almost down to scratch at one time.
"It is an honour to become the President of PGTI, an organization with which I have now been associated for quite a few years. It is a players body, and I am great friends with all of them and with whom I often play," Kapil said on his new position.
Kapil, who once nurtured dreams of representing India at the Asian Games when it was still open only to amateurs, also said that golf has been his passion for more than three decades.
"And now it is the sport where I spend most of my time. I have been a vicePresident and I am on the Board, so it's an honour to be chosen by the players to be the President. I promise to do my best as I always have.
A relaunched and lucrative Club World Cup has been coveted by FIFA President Gianni Infantino since he was elected in 2016, with aims to pay participating teams tens of millions of dollars in prize money. However, the value of a potential Apple deal was seen as an issue for the influential European Club Association (ECA) led by Nasser al-Khelaïfi, the president of Paris Saint-Germain which
is also in the Club World Club lineup. FIFA said on Monday it would involve the ECA in “an innovative, progressive style of consultation and decisionmaking” about the tournament.
The ECA already has a big say in commercial decisions for the Champions League through a joint venture with competition organizer UEFA. It is unclear what kind of broadcast model FIFA now favours, or if it will rely on its in-house streaming service FIFA+ in some markets.
Entries to the Club World Cup are earned by title wins and consistently good results in continental championships from 2020-24, and just three are left to be decided: Two from South America and one from the host league, Major League Soccer.
India’s Olympics Table Tennis Squad: More Staff Than Players
The Olympic-bound Indian table tennis squad is currently training in the German city of Saarbrucken with the support staff outnumbering the players who will compete in Paris. Italy’s Massimo Costantini, who has returned as India’s head coach for a third time, is getting help from former
player Sourav Chakraborty as the other national coach of the contingent.
As many as four personal coaches have been cleared by the government to travel with the squad with all three members of the women’s team wanting their own through their stay at the Games.

Prakash Padukone to Mentor Indian Badminton at Paris Olympics
Argentina defeated Colombia 1-0 in the Copa America final with a goal in extra time by Lautaro Martinez.
Jesurun, 71, was not allowed to enter the field with his son and other family members after the contest for the awards ceremony, the Colombian newspaper El Tiempo reported.
Jesurun's son confronted a security guard who denied them access.
Jesurun, a vice president of regional governing body CONMEBOL, also participated in the dispute before police officers intervened, according to the newspaper.
Miami-Dade police said in a statement there were 27 arrests and 55 ejections from the stadium at the match.
"I'm very proud of our officers' response to a volatile situation and for their hard work in keeping our community safe as well as our law-enforcement partners who provided key support," police director Stephanie Daniels said.
"As part of the full analysis of last night's game, we will review protocols set in place to ensure an orderly, safe and secure environment for all future events."
Legendary Prakash Padukone is set to travel as a mentor along with the 15-member Indian badminton squad for the Paris Olympics, beginning on July 26. Padukone, the first Indian to win the All England Championship, was retired in 1991 even as badminton was introduced in the Olympics at the 1992 Barcelona Games. While Lakshya Sen is a product of the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy (PPBA), Sindhu had announced Padukone as her mentor ahead of the Paris Games after shifting her base to Bengaluru from Hyderabad. She is preparing for her third Olympics.

Washington: Usha Chilukuri Vance, the wife of JD Vance, whom Donald Trump declared as his running mate in the upcoming US presidential elections on Monday, brings a wealth of credentials and a deep connection to Indian values and culture.
A litigator at a national firm, Usha Vance is the daughter of Indian immigrants and has an impressive academic background.
She holds a bachelor's degree in History from Yale University and a Master of Philosophy degree from the University of Cambridge, according to the New York Times.
Born Usha Chilukuri, she has carved out a distinguished career in the legal field, having clerked for Supreme Court Justices John Roberts and Brett Kavanaugh before Kavanaugh's nomination to the Court.
Raised in a suburb of San Diego, California, with a strong emphasis on education and hard work, Usha's academic achievements include serving as Managing Editor of the Yale Journal of Law & Technology and Executive Development Editor of The Yale Law Journal, according to a biography from Munger, Tolles & Olson law firm. After four years of intense extracurricular activity at Yale, she continued her studies as a Gates fellow at Cambridge, where she engaged with left-wing and liberal groups. She was a registered Democrat in 2014.
Usha and JD Vance first met at Yale Law School and were married in Kentucky in 2014, with a Hindu priest presiding over a separate ceremony, according to the New York Times. The couple has three children together. Usha Vance has played a subtle yet

significant role in her husband's success. She assisted Vance in organizing his thoughts on the social decline in rural white America, which inspired his best-selling memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, which was adapted into a film directed by Ron Howard in 2020. In the past, she has made some rare appearances with Vance as he sought the Ohio Senate seat.
As the US presidential elections draw near, former US President Donald Trump made his pick for Vice President, selecting JD Vance as his running mate on Monday. Trump
Search for Indian-Origin Youth Missing in Glacier National Park
HELENA, MT – A youth from Pune, Siddhant Vittal Patil, a tech professional living in California, has gone missing in the waters of Glacier National Park in Montana. Siddhant was hiking in the park with seven friends when he fell into Avalanche Creek on July 13. He briefly resurfaced before being swept away by the current into the gorge. Witnesses, including Patil’s friends, reported that he had diverted from the trail and was standing on a large rock above the gorge when “he slipped and
fell into the creek below,” said Pritesh Chaudhari, Siddhant’s uncle. Search efforts included aerial surveys by ALERT helicopters and ground searches by more than ten rangers along the creek. Some personal items belonging to Patil were recovered downstream, but strong currents in the gorge have made it impossible to search the area thoroughly. Park officials noted that the high water levels in the creek prevent rangers from entering the gorge until the runoff decreases. “It will take weeks or months for search operations to resume once the water level reduces,” said Chaudhari. Despite receiving Siddhant’s Apple Watch details, rangers have been unable to decode the information.
A drone was flown over Avalanche Creek on July 10 in an attempt to locate Patil, but the search was unsuccessful. Chaudhari expressed concern over the search efforts, alleging that not enough is being done and appealing to authorities for more prompt action. The family has also requested the hiring of private rangers to continue the search.
confirmed Vance's candidature through a post on social media. Speaking to ANI, a US-based global real estate investment advisor and a well-known entrepreneur, AI Mason said, "Usha Vance is a highly accomplished attorney and daughter of Indian immigrants -- and her husband brings youth and diversity to the Trump ticket."
"She knows the Indian culture and all about India. She can be a big help to her husband in navigating great ties between USA and India," the entrepreneur, who is also a friend of
the Trump family, said.
Meanwhile, in an interview earlier with Fox & Friends, Usha Chilukuri Vance and her Senator husband talked about the two having different faiths, and what are their views on the speculations of him becoming a pick for the Vice President of the US.
"I don't think people understand how hard he works and how creative he is. Everything he says and does is built on a foundation of so much thought. He's always trying to do better," Usha Vance said.
On being asked about the reason behind her support for JD Vance, as the US Presidential elections remain around the corner, Usha told Fox, "There are a few different reasons... One is that I grew up in a religious household. My parents are Hindu, and that was one of the things that made them such good parents, that makes them really very good people. And so I think I've seen that...the power of that in my own life, and I knew that JD was searching for something. This just felt right for him."
The interview was taken three weeks before the announcement of JD Vance as the running mate of Trump in the upcoming US presidential polls. Vance was born James David Bowman in Middletown, Ohio, to a mother who struggled with addiction and a father who left the family when JD was a toddler. He was raised by his grandparents.
The Trump campaign says the former president, following his brush with death, will call for unity in the face of tragedy instead of criticising his political adversaries as he faces off with President Biden in a 2024 election rematch.
33 Indian Farm Labourers Freed From "Slavery" By Italy Police
Rome: Italian police said on Saturday they had freed 33 Indian farm labourers from slave-like working conditions in the northern Verona province and seized almost half a million euros ($545,300) from their two alleged abusers.
Labour exploitation is in the spotlight in Italy following an accident in June in which an Indian fruit picker died after his arm was severed by machinery. In the latest case, police said the alleged gang masters, also from India, brought fellow nationals to Italy on seasonal work permits, asking them to pay 17,000
euros each and promising them a better future.
The migrants were given farm jobs, working seven days a week and 10-12 hours a day for just 4 euros an hour, which was entirely docked from them until they settled all their debts, the police said, describing the migrants' treatment as "slavery".
Some were asked to continue working for free to pay an additional 13,000 euros for a permanent work permit "which, in reality, would have never been given to them," the police statement said. The alleged abusers were charged with crimes connected to slavery and labour exploitation, while the victims will be offered protection, work opportunities, and legal residency papers, the police said.
Like other European nations, Italy has growing labour shortages often filled via immigration, particularly in lower-paid jobs, and has a migrant work visa system that has faced cases of fraud.

Another wrote, “I am proud. Your Decision.”
A user applauded the princess for her “courage and bravery”, saying, “It is just a phase of life and it will continue with good and bitterness and life doesn't stop for anybody.”

Trump Shooter Had Detonator On Him, May Have Planned A Distraction: Report
Thomas Matthew Crooks, who shot at former US President Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania, may have planned a distraction during the shooting. The 20-year-old, on Saturday, drove his Hyundai Sonata to Trump's rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, about an hour north of Pittsburgh, according to law enforcement officials. He joined thousands of people from around the region at the rally. Crooks was in possession of a remote control transmitter and a detonator, besides an improvised metal explosive device in his car trunk, connected to a receiver, CNN reported. This suggests
a diversion or distraction.
Crooks made several suspicious stops in the days leading up to the attack, including visiting a shooting range a
Harry, Meghan Break Royal Tradition in Surprise Move
New Delhi: In a significant departure from tradition, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have changed the surnames of their children. Recently, the couple launched its new website, sussex. com, where many noticed the change, the Mirror reported. Princess Lilibet and Prince Archie have now taken the surname Sussex, instead of Mountbatten-Windsors.
In 1960, Mountbatten-Windsor was decreed by the Privy Counsel, the official advisors to the late Queen Elizabeth II. The surname is applied to the male-line descendants of Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.
A source told The Times that the reality behind Harry and Meghan's new website is "very simple — it's a hub for the work the Sussexes do and it reflects the fact the family have, since the King's coronation, the same surname for the first time." The source noted this was a "big deal for any family."

London: The UK government on Wednesday announced plans to axe 92 House of Lords seats retained for hereditary lawmakers, resurrecting reform of the unelected chamber started under Tony Blair's Labour government in the 1990s.
King Charles III, opening the first parliamentary session after Keir Starmer's general election win for Labour, said removing the peers' right to sit and vote in the Lords was part of "measures to modernise" Britain's uncodified constitution.
Labour won the July 4 election by a landslide, returning it to power for the first time since 2010, allowing it to put its manifesto pledges into law, including the much-touted Lords reforms.

Four soldiers slain as militants 'lay trap' in Jammu mountain-forest region
D. Rajesh, Sepoy Bijendra, and Sepoy Ajay were injured and later died. Jaishe-Mohammed claimed responsibility for the attack. Despite government claims of peace post-Article 370 abrogation, terrorists have been relentlessly attacking over the past month, coinciding with potential upcoming Assembly elections. According to ecurity sources, approximately three groups of about two dozen terrorists are hiding in the Pir Panjal forests. These groups hide in dense forests, carry out attacks, and retreat to the jungles. A large-scale military operation may be necessary, but no decision has been made by the central government.
While numerous incidents have occurred in the Kashmir Valley, terrorists have now shifted their attacks to the Jammu region. From 2005 to 2021, the Jammu region was relatively peaceful, but it has been under siege over the past month. A recent terrorist attack on a bus carrying Vaishno Devi pilgrims resulted in 10 deaths and 40 injuries. Terrorist incidents have been rising in the Rajouri and Poonch areas near the Pakistan border since October 2021. Since 2021, 70 people, including 52 security personnel, have died in terrorist attacks in the Jammu region. Most of the martyred security personnel are from the military. The highest casualties have
Oil tanker capsizes off Oman, 13 Indians among 16 missing crew members
The 16-strong crew of a Comorosflagged oil tanker that capsized off Oman are still missing, the country's maritime security centre said on Tuesday, a day after the sinking was reported.
The crew of "Prestige Falcon" comprised 13 Indian nationals and three Sri Lankans, the Omani centre said in a post on the social media platform X.
Separately, the centre told Reuters that the vessel remains "submerged, inverted". It did not confirm whether the vessel had stabilised or whether oil or oil products were leaking into the sea. Shipping data by LSEG had shown the tanker was heading to the Yemeni port of Aden and capsized off Oman's major industrial port of Duqm.
The vessel is a 117-metre long oil products tanker built in 2007, the shipping data showed. Such small tankers are typically used for short coastal voyages.
Omani authorities conducted a searchand-rescue operation at the scene in coordination with maritime authorities, Oman's state news agency reported late on Monday.
US Expresses "Great Concern"
Over Pakistan's Decision To Ban Imran Khan's
Party
Washington: The US has voiced "concern" over the Pakistan government's move to ban jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan's party and emphasised that Washington would continue to "monitor these decisions and further decisions by the courts".
In its latest attempt to suppress jailed former Prime Minister Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif-led federal government on Monday announced that it has decided
to ban the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and seek Article 6 proceedings against Imran Khan, 71, and ex-president Arif Alvi, 78, among others.
The government led by the PML-Nparty also said Imran Khan's party illegally received foreign funds, involved in riots as well as "anti-state" activities.
US Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller during the daily briefing on Monday said: "Our understanding is that this is the beginning of what will be a complex political process."
"Certainly banning a political concern is something -- or a political party is something that would be of great concern to us," Matthew Miller told reporters in Washington in response to questions. Matthew Miller said the US supported "the peaceful upholding of constitutional and democratic principles, including respect for human rights and freedom of expression".

Trump's Classified Documents Case Dismissed
Miami: A Florida judge appointed by Donald Trump has dismissed the criminal case against the former president on charges of mishandling top secret documents, saying the way that Special Counsel Jack Smith was appointed was improper.
The decision is a huge victory for Trump, who had been accused of endangering national security by holding onto top secret documents after leaving the White House. Judge Aileen Cannon made her ruling after lawyers for the 78-year-old argued for a partial stay of proceedings to allow for an assessment of a Supreme Court ruling that a former president has broad immunity from prosecution.

Selects Republican Ohio Senator JD Vance As Vice President Candidate
selected
Washington: Donald Trump selected J.D. Vance, a Republican U.S. senator from Ohio, as his running mate on Monday, elevating a politician who once criticized the former president in acid terms but has since become one of his most stalwart defenders.
The news, carried on Trump's Truth Social media website, emerged at the start of the four-day Republican National Convention in Milwaukee to nominate the party's presidential ticket.
The selection of James David Vance, author of the bestselling memoir "Hillbilly Elegy," could increase the odds of Trump supporters turning out for the Nov. 5 election as the Ohio native is deeply popular with the Republican candidate's base.
A staunch conservative from a Republican state, Vance is unlikely to bring many new voters into Trump's corner, however, and may even alienate some moderates. Some Trump supporters had pushed him to select a woman or person of color as his No. 2 to expand a coalition that skews toward white men. The former president, 78, survived an assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania campaign rally on Saturday by a gunman whose motive remains unknown. Several of Trump's highest-profile backers - including former senior adviser Steve Bannon and Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr. - have praised Vance for pushing the Republican Party to embrace a more hands-off foreign policy approach and for supporting trade barriers.
Terrorist attacks, which started in Poonch and Rajouri districts, have now spread across Jammu, the region that was free from terrorism till a few years ago.
Over the last 32 months, 48 soldiers have been killed in action in the Jammu region. There are reports over 60 foreign terrorists - trained in jungle warfare - may be operating in the Jammu region alone, even as the shadow of fear has spread across all 10 districts of the province.
Last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had asked the Army to deploy the full spectrum of its anti-terrorist capabilities to eliminate terrorism in the Jammu region.

"It's Challenging"
Being Single Mother To Daughter Dityaa
Sakshi Tanwar, who adopted a nine-month-old girl in 2018, talked about her journey as a single mother and how she balances between her aspirations and parental duties in an interview with News 18. Sakshi named her daughter Dityaa. Sharing ideas about the crucial task of balancing between the personal and the professional lives, Sakshi told News 18, "I think all of us are trying to achieve that balance, which is the biggest challenge women face because of society's expectations and our own dreams and aspirations. In the middle of all that is your child - who wants your attention and has his own set of expectations from you." For the unversed, Sakshi played a working mother in Tahira Kashyap's directorial debut Sharmajee Ki Beti where her teenage daughter failed to understand her dreams and aspirations initially.
Sakshi Tanwar continued, "As a parent, you are constantly trying to achieve that balance. Fortunately for me, I am not a typical working mom because my work is not a daily 9-to-5 job. I don't have to wake up in the morning, go to work, and come back in the evening. I can plan my shoots as per requirements, and I'm only shooting 50 to 65 days of the year. I can manage my time because parenting is a full-time job, and you don't have any excuse for not being there."
During the same conversation, Sakshi Tanwar revealed that her family supports her lot in raising the daughter. She said, "If you have to be there with the child, you've got to be there. I have been lucky that when I was shooting, my family stepped in and was very supportive."
It is really important to keep doing different things
Triptii Dimri
After her debut in 2017 with 'Poster Boyz', national crush Triptii Dimri has mainly done films in the genre of drama. The actress, who will be seen in 'Bad Newz', minced no words in saying that she has since the beginning found comedy as a genre difficult and believes that, as an actor, it is important to keep diversifying roles.
“I have always done a lot of films in the drama genre, but I feel that as an actor, it is really important to keep doing different things and keep challenging yourself. I have found comedy a little difficult since the beginning,” said Triptii during the press conference in the national capital.
“So, in a way, it was really good for me,” added the 'Laila Majnu' actress.
The actress went on to thank director Anand Tiwari, who made his directorial debut with 'Love Per Square Foot' in 2018.
“I have always done a lot of films in the drama genre, but I feel that as an actor, it is really important to keep doing different things and keep challenging yourself
“I want to thank Anand sir from the bottom of my heart for trusting me with the film because you haven't seen me do comedy at that level. It was difficult for me, especially with Vicky Kaushal and Ammy Virk, as they are very talented and their comic timing is very good,” she said.
“It was difficult, but it was a good learning experience. I think in life, I would want to do different roles such as action, drama, comedy, and everything that is offered,” Triptii added.
A spiritual sequel to the 2019 movie 'Good Newwz', 'Bad Newz' tells the story of Saloni Bagga, who gets pregnant with twins from two different men.

9th Consecutive Akshay Kumar Delivers
This Friday, Akshay Kumar and Radhika Madan's Sarfira released. Despite its big budget and star cast, the film did not perform well at the box office. The film earned 2.5 crores on the first day, 4.25 crores on Saturday, and 5.25 crores on Sunday, totalling 12 crores by the end of the weekend. This is quite low for a star like Akshay Kumar. Recently, many of Akshay Kumar's films have been flops, and looking at the collection of Sarfira, it can be said that this is Akshay's ninth flop. Last year, Akshay appeared in a small role in OMG 2, which was a hit, but the main character was played by Pankaj Tripathi. Aside from this, all Akshay's films have failed at the box office.
In 2021, Akshay's film Sooryavanshi was a big hit. Still, following that, films like Atrangi Re, Bachchan Pandey, Samrat Prithviraj, Raksha Bandhan, Cuttputlli (released on OTT), Ram Setu, Selfiee, OMG 2, Mission Raniganj, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, and now Sarfira have all flopped. Excluding Cuttputlli and OMG 2 which were released on OTT, Sarafira is Akshay's ninth flop in the last four years. Senior journalist Bharti Dubey says, "Most of the films Akshay has been doing were signed before or during the COVID-19 pandemic. As we all know, films and audience tastes have changed post-COVID. Despite Akshay's good performances in many films, they have not done well. Secondly, I think Akshay should avoid remakes because their originals are released on OTT or YouTube, and audiences watch them, regardless of the language, which affects the collection of the remakes."
Pankit Thakker to make OTT debut with ‘Moh Maaya’: See this film as an opportunity
Actor Pankit Thakker is all set to step into the digital world with the upcoming film “Moh Maaya”, which he says he sees as an opportunity. “I'm excited to be working on my latest Film project, "Moh Maaya", directed by Ankush Bhatt. It's a challenging role, I'm enjoying the process of bringing this character to life. This is a lead role and I see this film as an opportunity,” Pankit said. Speaking about his experience, Pankit said that he believes that playing different roles and genres keeps his work exciting and challenging. He shared: “I love exploring new characters and bringing their stories to life. I think it's all about understanding the character's motivations and backstory.” “I try to connect with their emotions and experiences and then bring that to life on screen. This helps me manage to fully inhabit my characters and make them unique and memorable."
Rasika Dugal on OTT
Embracing Novelty and New Talent
Actress Rasika Dugal, who essays the role of Beena Tripathi in the hit streaming show 'Mirzapur', believes that the OTT medium currently shows healthy signs of progress. Having worked in the OTT space for the past decade, Rasika has been a part of shows like ‘Permanent Roommates’, ‘Humorously Yours’, ‘P.O.W.- Bandi Yuddh Ke’, and ‘Delhi Crime’ and has witnessed the growth of the OTT platform. Talking about the medium of OTT going in the right direction, Rasika told IANS: “I think there will be both good and
bad. Everybody’s taste is different, and if there’s content that’s out of the box, there will also be content that fits the box. If a space continuously allows novelty and room for new players to come in, I consider it a healthy space.” The actress feels “very encouraged” by the idea of how every few months there are talents which rule the roost for a couple of months. “It allows them to shine and push the boundaries. New talents mean that the audience is looking forward to novelty,” she added.

FIR against Kannada actor-filmmaker
Rakshit Shetty
An FIR has been registered against Kannada actor-filmmaker Rakshit Shetty over alleged "unauthorised usage" of a music company's two songs in his movie "Bachelor Party'', police said on Monday.
The complaint was filed against Shetty and his production house by Naveen Kumar, who is a partner at MRT Music, at Yeshwanthapura police station, alleging that two songs -- "Gaalimathu" and "Nyaya Ellide" -- were used in the comedy film without obtaining authorised permissions, they said.

US Scientists Decode 125-Year-Old Element That Could Improve Cancer Treatments
New Delhi: US researchers have decoded an element that could destroy cancerous cells, and advance treatment options for the deadly disease that claims millions of lives globally.
The element, actinium, was first discovered by French scientist Andre-Louis Debierne in 1899 and is number 89 on the Periodic Table.
Now after 125 years of its existence, there is a bright chance it could improve cancer treatments, as found by the Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
Even after 125 years, actinium remains an enigmatic element of science because to date it is found in extremely small quantities, and special facilities are needed to work with it, not just any ordinary radioactive lab.
The team of scientists tried growing it and while elements can behave very similarly to their lightweight counterparts, actinium behaved differently than its counterpart lanthanum.
From nuclear energy to medicine, these elements can serve the purpose admirably, for both are radioactive and earthy minerals, it is not actinium itself that saves the day, it is an isotope -- a distinct nuclear species of any element -- named actinium 225 that has shown promise in a method called targeted alpha

therapy (TAT).
The TAT technique transports radioactive elements to the cancer site via biological delivery mechanisms such as peptides or antibodies. When actinium decays, it emits energetic particles that travel a short distance, killing local cancer cells while sparing healthy tissue further away.
"If we can engineer proteins to bind the actinium with a high affinity, and either be fused with an antibody
or serve as the targeting protein that would really enable new ways to develop radiopharmaceuticals."
said Rebecca Abergel, Associate Professor of nuclear engineering at the University of California- Berkeley. Researchers employed a revolutionary way to create the crystals with only 5 micrograms of pure actinium, which is about one-tenth the weight of a grain of salt and unnoticeable to the naked eye.
Indian hospital sector’s market cap surges 9X to Rs 3.5 trillion in FY24
New Delhi: (IANS) The market cap of the Indian hospital sector surged 9 times from Rs 375 billion in FY20 to Rs 3.5 trillion in FY24 riding on improved pricing, higher insurance coverage, and dedicated shift towards complex surgeries such as transplants, a report showed on Monday.
Apart from the momentary Covid boost, there were many structural changes in the Indian healthcare space like increased health awareness, higher insurance coverage, growing acceptance towards modern hospital experience and price hikes, thereby leading to improvement in EBITDA, return on invested capital (ROIC) and cash flows, according to the report by JM Financial Institutional Securities Ltd.
or may not sustain in the longer run) form the majority of beds at present.
Moreover, cities that are seeing good bed capacity addition, their population is also growing at a 3-3.5 per cent rate which can absorb sizable bed addition, said the report.
"Delhi-NCR is attracting the highest bed supply which will get absorbed, in our view, due to low bed density, a large catchment area and international patient footfalls," the report noted.
They initially refined the actinium using a complicated filtration method that removed other elements and chemical contaminants.
They next attached the actinium to a metal-trapping molecule known as a ligand and encased the bundle inside a protein identified and purified by Roland Strong's team at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Centre, resulting in a "macromolecular scaffold."
The crystals, which grew for a week inside the Heavy Element Research Laboratory, were then cryocooled in liquid nitrogen and irradiated with X-rays at Berkeley Lab's Advanced Light Source.
X-rays revealed the compound's three-dimensional structure and demonstrated how this elusive element works with other surrounding atoms.
This study used the longest-living isotope of actinium, Actinium 227 although Actinium 225 is the preferred one for the Targeted Alpha method (as it has been used for prostate cancer as well with positive results).
The final word has not yet been said but the initial prose is the melodious beginning of a future scientific opera which would herald a new era of cancer treatment, the researchers said.
All-India Institute of Ayurveda hosts 'Saushrutam 2024’ with live surgeries
New Delhi: (IANS) The All-India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) on Monday successfully organised the second national seminar Saushrutam Shalya Sangoshti on the auspicious occasion of Sushruta Jayanti-2024, said the Ayush Ministry. Sushruta Jayanti is celebrated every year on July 15 to honour the legendary Sushruta, considered the father of surgery.
"This has brought in a lot of investor interest with eight hospitals raising Rs 36 billion (equity raise) over the last four years," the findings showed.
With operating cash flow (OCF) generation of large listed players rising (Rs 60.5 billion in FY24 vs Rs 24 billion in FY20), there is a new capex cycle emerging. "It is in this expansion phase, we prefer players that are diversifying, aligned with core philosophy, focusing on growth plus profitability and are available at reasonable valuations," the report mentioned.
The hospital chains account for only 11-23 per cent of beds across key cities while small format hospitals (which may
The cities with high-bed density like Hyderabad and Bengaluru are seeing bed expansion in new neighbourhoods/outskirts (HITEC in Hyderabad and Electronic City in Bengaluru) and not in centralcity areas. "Our analysis of 15 cities indicates that upcoming bed addition is unlikely to lead to lower occupancy for coverage universe; we believe investor concerns should be more focused on Hospital’s indiscipline approach to growth, overpricing, departing from core philosophy, over leverage and valuation," the report noted.
The three-day seminar, beginning July 13, was held in the national Capital. "Since its inception, AIIA has been committed to elevating Ayurveda globally.
Saushrutam, hosted by the Department of Shalya Tantra, exemplifies our dedication to integrating Ayurveda with cuttingedge surgical technology, empowering aspiring Ayurvedic surgeons with advanced skills and confidence in integrated surgical practices," said AIIA Director Prof. (Dr) Tanuja Nesari. The event saw 25 live complex surgical procedures, enabling participants to observe and learn various surgical techniques from renowned surgeons.

Thomas Crooks
Thomas Matthew Crooks: What we know about
the Trump attacker
Hours after a bullet grazed former US president Donald Trump' ear at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Sunday sending shockwaves throughout the country, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) identified the assassin as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks. "The FBI has identified Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the subject involved in the assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump on July 13, in Butler, Pennsylvania," the FBI said in a statement. The investigation agency has now released a photo of the young attacker. The image shows the 20-year-old wearing glasses and smiling into the camera.
Crooks was shot down by Secret Service snipers after he fired multiple shots at the former US president in the rally from a nearby rooftop. Witnesses claimed they tried to warn the security officials about a man moving from roof to roof nearby and laying on his stomach with a gun pointed at the rally. An assault rifle, AR-15, was found near his body.
Described as a "quiet" student and a "loner", Crooks had graduated in 2022 from Bethel Park High School, and received a $500 "star award" from the National Math and Science Initiative.

"Time To Cool It Down": Biden Addresses US After Trump Assassination Bid
HiIndia Newsdesk
Washington: President Joe Biden sought to calm a divided nation after his rival Donald Trump survived an assassination bid, saying in a rare Oval Office address Sunday it was time to lower the temperature of America's hostile politics.
"You know, the political record in this country has gotten very heated. It's time to cool it down," Biden said in the televised speech, just the third he has given from behind the historic Resolute Desk during his presidency.
As the country reeled from images of a bloodied Trump waving his fist after a gunman opened fire at a rally in Pennsylvania, Biden added that US politics "must never be a literal battlefield, a God forbid, a killing field."
The 81-year-old Democrat said that both sides had a responsibility to ease the situation ahead of a deeply polarized election that would now be a "time of testing" for the United States. The short but forceful speech went
without any major hitches -- bar Biden twice referring to the ballot box as a "battle box" -- with the ageing president under close scrutiny following a disastrous debate performance against Trump recently.
Investigators said that they were still probing the motives of 20-year-old gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks, who was shot dead by snipers at the event in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday after firing multiple shots with a legallybought semi-automatic rifle.

Nirmala Sitharaman Slams Congress For "Spreading Lies" Against BJP
Chandigarh: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman accused the Congress on Sunday of "spreading lies and creating a false narrative" against the BJP-led Centre, and asked the party workers to counter this "falsehood" with facts and data.
Nirmala Sitharaman said this while addressing a meeting of the Chandigarh BJP state executive. Later, she also held a meeting with traders to understand their issues and know their demands.
Referring to the recently-concluded Lok Sabha polls, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader said the Congress has now failed to touch the 250-seat mark in the last 10 general elections.
"Even then, they have an artificial confidence," she said while pointing towards the Congress's performance in the last 10 Lok Sabha polls.
"The INDI alliance, comprising 13 political parties, could manage to win just 232 seats, while the BJP on its own won 240 seats," Nirmala Sitharaman said. She also pointed out that the Congress could not win a single seat in 14 states in this year's Lok Sabha election. The finance minister accused the Congress of "spreading lies" and trying to twist certain statements of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Union minister Nitin Gadkari in order to create a "false narrative".
"Two People Have Tried To Kill Me": Elon Musk After Trump Shooting Incident
A shooting took place at Donald Trump's rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday. The suspected assassin has been identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks. The 20-year-old was killed by security officials when he opened fire at Mr Trump. The incident occurred days before the start of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where Mr Trump will formally become the party's nominee.
As the country reeled from images of a bloodied Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania, Joe Biden added that US politics "must never be a literal battlefield.
not allow "evil to win," adding it was "more important than ever that we stand United."
The 78-year-old Republican later added on social media that it was "God alone" who had saved him. Trump's wife Melania called the shooter a "monster." Trump was hit in the ear and left with a bloodied face by the attack, which also killed a bystander while two other people were wounded, but he managed to raise a defiant fist to the crowd as Secret Service agents bundled him away. He landed later Sunday in Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention, where he will be anointed as the party's presidential nominee, with supporters believing the attack will swing voters behind him in November.
PCB's Threat if India Skips 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has taken a firm stance on hosting the Champions Trophy 2025 entirely within its territory, dismissing any considerations for a hybrid model. In a tit-for-tat move, the PCB has reportedly threatened to pull out of the 2026 T20 World Cup, set to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, if the Indian team refuses to travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy. According to a Geo News report, the PCB is steadfast on hosting the entire tournament in Pakistan and will oppose any hybrid model proposals during the ICC's annual conference in Colombo from July 19-22.

Elon Musk.”
To this, Mr Musk said, “Dangerous times ahead. Two people (on separate occasions) have already tried to kill me in the past 8 months. They were arrested with guns about 20 mins drive from Tesla HQ in Texas.”
Earlier in the day, Elon Musk shared a clip of Donald Trump surrounded by the Secret Service after shots were fired at him. He said, “I fully endorse President [Donald] Trump and hope for his rapid recovery.”
Carlos Alcaraz powered to victory over an out-of-sorts Novak Djokovic to retain his men's singles title at Wimbledon.
Although the players on show made this a repeat of last year's final, it failed to live up to the five-set thriller of 12 months ago as Djokovic appeared mostly helpless against the dominant Spaniard.

PM Modi to Balance on Russia Tightrope
Everyone knew Prime Minister Narendra Modi would be courting controversy when he decided the first foreign visit of his third term would be to Russia. The most commonly used description for Modi’s trip was “tightrope walk.” Could he strengthen ties with Russia without angering other allies like the US and the UK? Modi and external affairs minister
S. Jaishankar have crafted new terms like ‘multi-alignment’ and ‘all-alignment’ to describe India’s foreign policy. But the fact
is the West glares suspiciously whenever India engages with its old ‘tried and tested’ buddy Russia. Modi’s tightrope walk became even trickier because his Moscow visit coincided with the 75th anniversary of Nato celebrated at the military pact’s annual summit held in Washington. Joe Biden, presiding over a White House Nato dinner, remarked: “We don’t share a common border but we’re neighbours.” He might have added for good measure that the alliance is brought together by a common enemy: Russia. Making Modi’s high-wire act even tougher, the Russians also happened to bomb Ukraine’s biggest pediatric hospital on the day Modi arrived in Moscow. Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky called it a “devastating blow” to see “the leader of the world’s largest democracy hug the world’s most bloody criminal in Moscow on such a day”.
How Zelenskyy Reacted When Biden Called Him "President Putin"

Zelenskyy, who had by then recovered from his bafflement, responded by saying, "I am better (than Putin)."

In June 2024, the US annual inflation rate dropped to 3%, the lowest level since June 2023, after falling for three consecutive months to 3.3% in May and below estimates of 3.1%. The CPI surprisingly fell 0.1% from the previous month contrary to expectations of a 0.1% increase, after registering unchanged in May. An increase in shelter was more than offset by the 3.8% decline in the fuel index, which had dropped 3.6% in May.

DOJ Rule to Boost Online Access for People with Disabilities
WASHINGTON, DC- The Justice Department has issued a landmark final rule to enhance the accessibility of web content and mobile apps under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This rule mandates that state and local governments ensure their digital services, including healthcare, education, voter information, and permits, comply with technical standards within two or three years, depending on population size. This change aims to improve independence, dignity, and privacy for people with disabilities.
Developed with extensive public input, including from individuals with disabilities, advocacy groups, and web accessibility experts, the rule incorporates significant feedback from commenters. One commenter highlighted the necessity for privacy and unrestricted access to digital resources for blind and visually impaired individuals, while another emphasized the internet’s role in removing communication barriers. These comments underscore the rule’s potential to eliminate obstacles to civic participation and enable meaningful community engagement for people with disabilities. The rule supports the ADA’s vision of equal opportunity, full participation, independent living, and economic self-sufficiency in the digital age. The final rule is available on the Federal Register and ADA.gov, along with a fact sheet and a compliance guide for small state and local governments.

St. Jude Dad, Amit, Embraces Life’s Second Chance
Amit remembers life in India before his youngest child, Bella, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. He had four car spa businesses in different cities that demanded most of his attention. His wife often reminded him to slow down and spend time with their two young children. During Bella’s first year, Amit recalled traveling extensively, which prevented him from being there for many of Bella’s developmental milestones. Then Bella got sick and was given a poor prognosis after undergoing brain surgery in India. Amit realized he couldn’t get back the time he had missed with Bella.
“There was little hope of any good news, and I started regretting not spending more time with her,” he recalled. “This feeling was killing me inside, and I asked for a second chance from my God.”
Bella’s medical tests were sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, where doctors found that Bella had anaplastic ependymoma, a more promising diagnosis. Bella was
referred to St. Jude for treatment. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is leading the way in understanding, treating, and defeating childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing, or food — so they can focus on helping their child live.
At St. Jude, Bella’s treatment included proton therapy and chemotherapy. Bella finished treatment and went home, where she plays sports and performs in plays at a local theater. She returns to St. Jude for checkups.
Amit is making the most of his second chance with Bella. He works from home whenever possible. Every night, he reads Bella two bedtime stories. They also quiz each other on questions that require unpredictable and humorous answers. “Bella and I have a special bond, and she understands everything about me,” he said. “At times, she takes undue advantage of my love and possessiveness, but that’s fine, and I enjoy that.”
California Congressman Reintroduces Resolution to Honor Stan Swamy
California congressman Rep Juan Vargas reintroduced a resolution that honors the life and legacy of Indian activist Father Stanislaus Lourduswamy known as Father Stan Swamy. Swamy, a prominent tribal rights activist in India died while in police custody in 2021. The resolution, supported by Reps. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) and Andre Carson (D-Ind.), also encouraged India to pursue an independent investigation into his arrest, incarceration, and death.
A Roman Catholic priest, Father Stan fought for the human rights of India’s marginalized groups. Swamy was arrested and charged under the country’s anti-terrorism laws, which critics have described as draconian. Vargas said in the resolution “Father Stan dedicated his life to giving a voice to the voiceless. He was a tireless advocate for the rights of the Indigenous Adivasi people, trained young community leaders, and worked for justice for many communities in India. As a former Jesuit, I’m horrified that Father Stan faced relentless abuse and was denied medical care while in custody,” he said. “I introduced this resolution to make sure Father Stan and his lifelong commitment to the greater good is never forgotten.”

From July 2023 to May 2024, 2,377,158 encounters occurred at the southwest border, with removals accounting for about 31% of these. However, many removed individuals had been in the country for some time pending their removal. The Mega Scam of All times
IWhile hundreds of scams involving Indians are reported over the years, the Theranos scam collectively goes down in the history of scams as one of the biggest of modern times. Here’s what conspired in this story involving mega bucks, fraud and romance
2022 Theranos’ COO and president Ramesh ‘Sunny’ Balwani’s trial kicked off in San Jose. He was convicted on 12 fraud charges and was sentenced to 11 years in prison.
The story started in 2002 with Balwani meeting Elizabeth Holmes. Balwani was a rich man who had already made $40 million selling his share of a software company. Sunny led a high-flying life, he drove a Lamborghini with “Veni Vidi Vici” written on his license plate. Romance developed between Holmes and Balwani and they began living together by 2005.
Holmes founded a startup Theranos in 2004 which was aimed at making blood tests faster, accurate and efficient. Five years on, Balwani guaranteed a $10 million loan to Theranos and got linked up into the business. The company reached dizzying heights with being valued at $10 billion in 2014. But soon the cracks began showing with the company's testing device exposed as unworkable. Soon, wire fraud and conspiracy charges were filed by federal and state regulators. Theranos was dissolved in 2018 and in 2022 Holmes and Balwani were found guilty and sentenced to 11 and 12 years in prison. They were ordered to pay restitution of $452 million to fraud victims including part of it to media mogul Rupert Murdoch.

In April, this year, an IndianAmerican doctor, Adarsh Gupta, from NJ was convicted by a federal jury in a $5.4 million Medicare fraud involving orthotic braces. Most of these claims were for orthotic braces ordered through a telemarketing scheme. In one instance, the Indian-origin doctor prescribed a knee brace to a person with amputated legs. He faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison for each healthcare fraud charge and five years for each false statement charge. Sentencing in Gupta's case is scheduled for October 8
Texas based Investment Advisor Guilty in $25 Million Fraud
In March this year, it was revealed that Sidharth Jawahar had amassed over $35 million from investors with his firm Swiftarc Ventures but he used only $10 million from the amount for actual investments. A grand jury indicted him in a multi-million-dollar Ponzi scheme. Jawahar used the money from new investors and repaid older ones. He also used the money to fund his lavish lifestyle that included private plane flights, luxury hotel stays and high-end dining. Jawahar concentrated the majority of client funds into a single investment, Philip Morris Pakistan (PMP), starting in 2015. Jawahar allegedly misled investors about the share price and their profits as well. In March this year Jawahar was ordered, imprisonment until sentencing by the court.

HinduPACT Condemns Attempt on Trump, Calls for Non-Violence
CHICAGO, IL - HinduPACT strongly condemns the recent assassination attempt on President Donald J. Trump. We stand united in our belief that violence has no place in a democratic society and that our political processes must be safeguarded from such heinous acts.
This recent attempt evokes memories of darker times in American history, such as the tragic assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963. Such violence undermines the fabric of our democracy and hinders our progress as a nation. In stark contrast, America shines brightest when peaceful debates prevail. A prime example is the Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858, where Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas engaged in respectful
discussions on crucial national issues. These debates showcased the strength of democratic discourse and set a high standard for political engagement. Democracy thrives on open dialogue, respectful debate, and peaceful resolution of differences. These principles are deeply embedded in Hindu Dharma traditions, which have advocated for deliberation and discussion for thousands of years. Ancient Indian republics, known as Mahajanapadas, exemplified this with their robust discussions on policies and governance. HinduPACT calls upon law enforcement agencies to thoroughly investigate this attempt and bring the perpetrators to justice. We also extend our thoughts and prayers to President Trump and his family during this challenging time. Together, let us work towards a future where our differences are resolved through understanding and cooperation, upholding the principles of democracy and non-violence that form the bedrock of our society.

CLERKSBURG, VA- On July 10, the FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Division marked the 100th anniversary of the FBI’s national repository for fingerprints and related criminal history data.
In 1924, the FBI established the Identification Division, informally called “Ident,” which gathered prints from police agencies nationwide and manually searched them for criminal matches. In February 1992, the CJIS Division was created from the former Identification Division to serve as the national repository for criminal justice information.
Technological advancements, particularly the Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System and the Next Generation Identification (NGI) System, have revolutionized fingerprint identification. Today, less than 3% of fingerprint transactions require physical handling by an examiner, with responses now provided within minutes instead of weeks.
“I’m extremely proud to honor the FBI’s
Director Wray joined FBI staff, lawmakers, and dozens of retired fingerprint examiners to celebrate 100 years since the Bureau established its Identification Division in 1924.

Ferguson emphasized the ongoing commitment to providing top-notch biometric tools to fight crime and terrorism through research and collaboration.
Today, the CJIS Division encompasses a range of criminal justice services, including the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, the National Crime Information Center, the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, and the National Threat Operations Center.
