Trump Names Billionaire Private Astronaut Jared Isaacman As Next NASA Chief

Isaacman

Washington: US President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday nominated Jared Isaacman, the online payments billionaire and the first private astronaut to ever perform a spacewalk, as the next head of NASA.

The nod could spark questions about potential conflicts of interest, given Isaacman's extensive financial ties to Elon Musk, who is set to co-chair a government efficiency commission and is one of Trump's closest advisors.

Isaacman, 41, the founder and CEO of Shift4 Payments, has emerged as a leading figure in commercial spaceflight through his high-profile collaborations with Musk's SpaceX.

His achievements include stepping out of a Crew Dragon to gaze at Earth from the void of space, while clutching the spacecraft's exterior, back in September.

"I am delighted to nominate Jared Isaacman, an accomplished business leader, philanthropist, pilot and astronaut, as Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)," Trump wrote on Truth Social.

"Jared will drive NASA's mission of discovery and inspiration, paving the way for groundbreaking achievements in Space science, technology, and exploration."

The historic spacewalk took place under the Polaris program, a collaboration between Isaacman and SpaceX that is set to include three missions in total.

their parents and a doctor have argued that the 2023 ban violates a US constitutional guarantee of equal protection, saying it discriminates based on sex.

The hearing was the first time that the current court, which has a conservative majority, openly discussed a significant battle in the US "culture wars".

The Biden administration and US medical groups argue that the law prohibits transgender individuals from accessing drugs and therapies that are available to other adolescents with medical need. They also say it hinders parents' rights to seek needed care for their children.

During hours of oral arguments on Wednesday, five of the Supreme Court's nine justices expressed doubts on the legal challenge to the ban and the arguments made by lawyers for the families and the administration.

Vancouver police informed that the two people who were stabbed by the deceased accused have received injuries but they are not life threatening, while adding that the accused died at a hospital after officers shot him.

According to witnesses, a suspect stole a knife and liquor from a restaurant and thereafter started attacking people in a nearby 7-Eleven store, as reported by Associated Press.

“One of the kitchen guys came out, asked if he could help him, and the guy grabbed the knife and asked him if he wanted to die,” said Kylie Noel, who was working at the Original Joe’s restaurant at Robson and Hamilton streets in downtown Vancouver. Her co-worker

700 Bangladeshi Convicts, Terrorists Escape Jail

Dhaka: Around 700 Bangladeshi prison inmates were still on the run after mass jailbreaks over the summer during the student-led revolution that ousted autocratic ex-prime minister Sheikh Hasina, authorities said Wednesday. Sheikh Hasina fled in August to India, where she remains, as her government collapsed at the peak of a popular revolt. In the weeks before her departure, revolts or sieges by protesters at five prisons around the Muslim-majority nation saw roughly 2,200 inmates break out of their cells.

South Korea opposition files motion to impeach President Yoon

South Korea's opposition lawmakers have begun impeachment proceedings against President Yoon Suk Yeol over his failed attempt to impose martial law.

The country woke up to an uncertain reality on Wednesday after a night of

unprecedented scenes which saw Yoon unexpectedly impose martial law, 190 lawmakers gather to vote it down, and a sudden reversal of the decision around six hours later.

After introducing the impeachment motion, South Korea's main opposition Democratic Party condemned Yoon's initial martial law declaration as "insurrectionary behaviour".

Parliament will have to vote on whether to impeach Yoon by Saturday. "We can no longer allow democracy to collapse. The lives and safety of the people must be protected," said Kim Yong-jin, a member of the Democratic party's central committee.

Hamas Threatens To "Neutralise" Hostages

If Israel Conducts Rescue Operation

Dubai: Hamas said it had information that Israel intended to carry out a hostage rescue operation similar to one conducted in Gaza's Nuseirat camp in June and threatened to "neutralise" the captives if any such action took place, according to an internal statement seen by Reuters on Wednesday. In the statement dated November 22, Hamas told its operatives not to consider what the repercussions of following the instructions might be and said it held Israel responsible for the fate

Iran has granted temporary release to Nobel Peace laureate Narges Mohammadi, who has been imprisoned since November 2021. Her lawyer, Mostafa Nili, announced the news on social media platform X, stating the release was based on medical advice. “Following the recommendation of the examining doctor, the public prosecutor has suspended Narges Mohammadi’s prison sentence for three weeks, and she has been released,” Nili wrote. However, her family and supporters have criticised the temporary release as insufficient. In a statement, they described the three-week suspension as “inadequate” and called for her immediate and unconditional release.

of the hostages. The statement, which a senior Hamas source told Reuters was circulated to its factions by the intelligence unit of the group's military wing Izz el-Deen al-Qassam Brigades, did not say when any Israeli operation was expected to take place.

There was no immediate Israeli response to the statement. On Wednesday, Israeli media cited Defence Minister Israel Katz as saying pressure on Hamas was increasing and this time "we will really be able to advance a hostage deal".

Israel's Nuseirat rescue operation on June 9 saw Israeli forces free four hostages, who had been held by Hamas since October 2023, in a raid Palestinian officials said killed more than 200 people, making it one of the bloodiest Israeli assaults of the war.

In the Hamas statement, the group told its operatives to "tighten" the living conditions of the captives and said this should be done in accordance with instructions issued after the Nuseirat operation.

Bangladesh interim government’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has said the Sheikh Hasina regime “destroyed everything”, as he pledged to hold general elections only after ushering in constitutional and judicial reforms, Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha reported on Wednesday citing an interview he gave to a Japanese newspaper.

Nepal, China sign 9 agreements

Nepal and China signed nine agreements in Beijing on Tuesday, but the absence of any significant and meaningful reference to the Belt and Road Initiative in any of them indicates that the clash between two major parties in Nepal’s coalition government may have come as a major disappointment to China. Tuesday was the second day of Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli’s four-day official visit. The exchange of MOUs took place soon after a meeting between Oli and his Chinese counterpart Li Qiang.

Nepal Joins BRI, Alarming New Delhi

Beijing: A significant agreement was signed in Beijing today paving the way for China to make major inroads in Nepal. Seven years after an initial understanding for Kathmandu to be part of Beijing's Belt and Road Initiative or BRI, today's agreement lays the framework of how projects will be executed. He has been in China since Monday to work closely with Xi Jinping and finalise the deal.

Muhammad Yunus Involved In Genocide: Sheikh Hasina

In a virtual address at an event in New York, Sheikh Hasina accused Muhammad Yunus of perpetrating "genocide" and failing to protect minorities including Hindus.

Ousted Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has mounted a stinging attack on the country's interim leader Muhammad Yunus over alleged persecution of minorities.

In a virtual address at an event in New York, Sheikh Hasina accused Muhammad Yunus of perpetrating "genocide" and failing to protect minorities including Hindus. She also claimed that there were plans to assassinate her and her sister Sheikh Rehana just like their father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Mujibur Rahman was assassinated in 1975. It was Sheikh Hasina's first public address after

taking shelter in India following her resignation in August in the face of massive anti-government protests, though she had commented on the overall situation in Bangladesh.

"The armed protestors were directed towards Ganabhaban. If the security guards opened fire, many lives would have been lost. It was a matter of 25-30 minutes, and I was forced to leave. I told them [guards] not to fire no matter

what happened," she said referring to the storming of her official residence in Dhaka on August 5.

"Today, I am being accused of genocide. In reality, Yunus has been involved in genocide in a meticulously designed manner. The masterminds -- the student coordinators and Yunus -- are behind this genocide," she said at the event on Sunday

Mahayuti Claims Power: Fadnavis to Be Sworn in as Maharashtra CM

The leaders of the Mahayuti alliance in Maharashtra met Governor C P Radhakrishnan on Wednesday and staked claim to form a government, clearing the way for BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis to return as the chief minister of the state. While it was clarified that Fadnavis would take oath on Thursday and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Ajit Pawar would be sworn in as his deputy, there was no clarity on whether Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde would be a part of the government.

Fadnavis, Shinde and Pawar addressed a joint press conference after submitting a letter of support to the governor.

“After staking claim, the Maharashtra governor has given us time of 5.30 pm for oath-taking ceremony on Thursday,”

Trump Cites Hunter Biden Pardon to Dismiss Hush Money Case

New York, United States:

US President-elect Donald Trump's attorneys sought to dismiss his historic criminal fraud conviction in a new filing released Tuesday -- arguing President Joe Biden used similar reasoning to pardon his son, Hunter Biden.

The Democratic lame-duck president pardoned his son Sunday, after Hunter was convicted earlier this year of tax evasion and illegally possessing a firearm, arguing he was "selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted" by the Department of Justice (DOJ) "only because he is my son."Trump's motion to dismiss, filed Monday, saw his legal team cite the

arguments used by Biden to make their own case to presiding judge Juan Merchan. Biden's "comments amounted to an extraordinary condemnation of President Biden's own DOJ," the letter's introduction reads. "This is the same DOJ that coordinated and oversaw the politically-motivated, electioninterference witch hunts targeting President Trump." The 69-page brief also invoked the doctrine of presidential immunity -- which the Supreme Court has ruled extends to "official acts" while president -- and the Presidential Transition Act, among other laws, to "immediately dismiss the Indictment and vacate the jury's verdicts."

Approves $1.17 Billion Helicopter Deal with India

Washington: The Biden Administration on Monday notified Congress of its decision to approve the sale of MH-60R Multi-Mission Helicopter Equipment and related ones at an estimated cost of USD1.17 billion. The proposed sale will improve India's

capability to deter current and future threats by upgrading its anti-submarine warfare capabilities, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency said in a notification to the Congress. The Biden administration's approval of sale of major defense equipment to India comes weeks ahead of its completion of its four-year term. President-elect Donald Trump would be sworn in as 47th president of the United States of America on January 20, 2025. According to the notification, India has requested to buy 30 Multifunctional Information Distribution System-Joint Tactical Radio Systems (MIDS-JTRS).

other allies too,” he added. Fadnavis said that all the Mahayuti leaders wanted Shinde to be a part of the government and he hoped the Shiv Sena chief would accept his request. He also said that the portfolio distribution and power-sharing formula would be discussed later in the day.

Shinde: Fadnavis Backed Me, I Returned the Favor

Mumbai: Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister elect of Maharashtra who met Governor CP Radhakrishnan and staked claim to form government today, provided nuggets of his last evening's meeting with Eknath Shinde that airbrushed the recent logjam over government formation. "Two-and-a-half year ago, Fadnavis recommended my name to become the Chief Minister. This time, we recommend his name to become the Chief Minister," said Mr Shinde, who had gone off to his village in Satara after declaring that he would not be an "obstacle" to the BJP decision. Last evening, he was admitted in a hospital for what his team called a "routine check-up".

How Chicago man Harshkumar Ramanlal Patel became Dirty Harry – the Human Smuggler

Harshkumar Ramanlal Patel may have binged watched Clint Eastwood starrer Hollywood thrillers “Dirty Harry” before taking up the same moniker for his clandestine crimes. Harshkumar Patel came to be known in the secret circles of immigration fraud as Dirty Harry. Harshkumar Patel has been involved in an intricate illegal operation responsible for bringing a number of Indians into the U.S.

But last week, Patel’s illicit gang got busted and he along with another accomplice, Steve Shand were convicted on charges of human smuggling.

It may be of interest to the Indian American community to know that Patel has been convicted in relation to a tragic news that came in the winter of 2022, where an Indian family of four were found frozen to death on the U.S-Canada border while trying to cross illegally.

The family from the Indian state of Gujarat has four members -- Jagdish Patel, his wife, Vaishaliben and their two kids -- 11-year-old daughter, Vihangi; and 3-year-old son, Dharmik. The reports of young kids going through this ordeal and meeting a tragic fate just because their parents were trying to enter the United States illegally, struck a chord with the community and caused a deep pain while questioning the increasing obsession to come to America by hook or by crook.

In the past few years, there has been an increasing amount of illegal trafficking from the Canada -U.S. border. It is also noteworthy that a large number of these illegal migrants are Indians. According to the data from the US Customs and Border Protection (USCBP) that Indian nationals made up 22% of encounters at the northern border in the past one year. This year it was found that there were 43,764 Indians out of the total 198,929 people trying to enter illegally. The number has steadily gone up in the recent few years, making many wonder, why sometimes even those Indians who are financially comfortable choose the tough route just to migrate to America?

Community fears it tarnishes reputation

According to new Pew Research Center estimates based on the 2022 American Community Survey, the unauthorized immigrant population in the United States grew to 11.0 million in 2022. The survey also states that the unauthorized immigrant population grew in six states from 2019 to 2022 – Florida, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Texas. Only California saw a decrease.

Immigration attorneys inform that as per the Pew Research there are about 11 million undocumented individuals in the US as of 2022. Of those about 725,000 are from India alone! While most Indians take the

like our family who came back in the 1980's, have worked very hard to make a life for themselves and create the reputation of hard-working Indians. This new crop trying to find a shortcut by unethical means is creating troubles for the younger deserving Indians.”

There seems to be a genuine concern in the desi community following many such incidents. Bikram Singh,

Only California saw a decrease.

a small business owner says, “My father arrived in America with a few hundred dollars, he studied to find a footing in the U.S., worked two jobs, paid all his taxes in time and it was people like him who created the image of an ideal Indian immigrant in America. These cases bring not just disrepute but are also a troubling sign that Indians are looking at life in America with rose-tinted glasses. What they don’t know is that a grueling future awaits them here. First it is not easy to escape the law and then it is not easy to survive if you do not have proper documentation.”

Other ways People are Illegal in the Country

Top immigration attorneys inform that crossing the border is not the only way many Indians are making their way into the U.S. without permit. Another problem is overstaying the visa. There have been numerous cases where Indians have come on visas –F-1 or even visitor visas like B-1/B-2 and have not exited after the expiry of their visa. If this is not contained, warn attorneys that we could start seeing stricter policies around visas granted to Indians. Most Indians are wary that the missteps of a few could lead to the whole community bearing the brunt.

Other cases that immigration attorneys say that they have come across is the abuse of fiancé visas. Sometimes, people enter on fiancé visas and if the relationship doesn’t work out after some time their basis of staying in the U.S. is no longer valid. There have been a few cases where such scenarios have come to light. Another area where some cases have been trying to trick the system is asylum cases. It may be noted that there was a record number of 16,920 Indians taken into custody by the U.S. Border Patrol in 2022. Today, amongst those who await asylum hearings are many Indians.

Biggest Drug Trafficking in Illinois: 2 Indian origin Canadians Arrested with $40 Million of Cocaine

In one of the biggest ever cases of drug trafficking in Illinois, two Canadian men with roots in India have been arrested. Vanshpreet Singh and Manpreet Singh both from Ontario, Canada were driving in a semi-trailer truck near the Iowa state line on Friday. Just when they were at Interstate 80 in Henry County, a state trooper conducted an inspection on the vehicle busting their crime. The truck contained 1,146 pounds of cocaine, with an approximate street value of more than $40 million, according to the police. Both men have been charged with felony counts of possession of cocaine, possession with intent to deliver cocaine, and cocaine trafficking. The two men could face decades of prison if convicted. The men were taken to Henry County jail and await their first court appearance.

Indians in Drug Trafficking – Is the number rising?

Through the years the maximum number of people convicted of drug trafficking charges have been U.S. citizens. According to Tara McGrath, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California, approximately 80% of people prosecuted and convicted of federal drug trafficking offenses were U.S. citizens. So, every time a name comes up with a desi immigrant root, involved in crimes such as trafficking there is a concern in the community about rising criminal activities.

Police in India say they have reached out for information to Elon Musk's Starlink after they allegedly found drug smugglers using its satellite internet device to navigate Indian waters and reach the country's shore. Starlink claims to provide superfast broadband "almost anywhere on Earth".

But it does not yet have permission to provide coverage in India or India's territorial waters.

Last week, the Indian Coast Guard said they found the device on a Myanmar boat they seized near the Andaman and Nicobar islands. This was the biggest such drug bust by the Coast Guard, authorities said. They reportedly seized 6,000kg (13,227 lb) of methamphetamine from the boat. Police estimated it was worth $4.25bn (£3.35bn).

Police in the Indian archipelago of Andaman and Nicobar say they have arrested six Myanmar nationals in the case. The driver and passenger of that tractor trailer, later identified as Gusimrat Singh and Simranjit Singh, allegedly handed off 65 pounds of suspected methamphetamine to the undercover agents. In 2024, Biden and Modi signed U.S.-India Drug Policy Framework for the 21st Century

In October this year, the Government of India hosted the United States in New Delhi for the fifth annual meeting of the U.S.-India Counternarcotics Working Group (CNWG). This year’s CNWG builds on President Biden and Prime Minister Modi’s commitment made during the Prime Minister’s June 2023 State Visit to work towards a broader and deeper bilateral drug policy partnership. And it follows the September 2024 signature of a new Memorandum of Understanding to launch the U.S.-India Drug Policy Framework for the 21st Century. At the meeting, the United States and India also set out work plans for countering illicit production and trafficking of drugs amongst other important issues.

Hargobinder S Dhaliwal, police chief of the Andaman islands, said last week's incident put authorities on alert because the use of Starlink's mini device had bypassed legal channels. The company's website describes the device as "a compact, portable kit that can easily fit in a backpack".

The drug smugglers started using Starlink from the time their journey began from Myanmar, Mr Dhaliwal said in a press statement on Monday. "They directly operated [phones] with satellite, creating a Wi-Fi hotspot," he added. Andaman police say they have since written to Starlink, asking for details of the device, including who bought it, when and how it's been used since its purchase. They are also investigating the involvement of any local or foreign syndicates in transporting the drug. The BBC has contacted Starlink for their response.

Diabetes Crisis in India: A Medical and Social Challenge

India is currently facing a severe diabetes crisis, with a staggering 13 crore (130 million) patients unable to access treatment. This figure highlights a significant public health issue, as diabetes continues to grow unchecked in the country. According to research published in The Lancet, diabetes is not only prevalent but is also becoming increasingly difficult to manage due to limited access to healthcare services.

A study revealed that over 44 crore (440 million) people in India are living with diabetes, which is a concerning statistic considering the nation's economic and healthcare disparities. The causes behind this crisis are multifaceted. While poverty is one factor, another key issue is the inaccessibility of medical professionals and healthcare services. The lack of adequate healthcare infrastructure and the high cost of treatment make it difficult for a large portion of the population to receive proper care. As the number of diabetes patients continues to rise, many are turning to alternative treatments and unverified methods, often at the recommendation of quacks or unqualified practitioners. This is not only exacerbating the problem but also undermining trust in conventional medical practices. Patients are increasingly looking for quick fixes from self-proclaimed healers, further complicating their condition.

Diabetes is not just a personal health issue for millions of Indians; it is a nationwide crisis. To address it effectively, the government must act decisively to improve access to healthcare, regulate alternative medicine practices, and invest in public health campaigns to educate the population about the dangers of this silent epidemic.

necessary care, pushing them towards unproven and cheaper alternatives.

Dr. V. Mohan, a prominent researcher, explained that the rise in diabetes cases can be linked to several socioeconomic factors, including increased

in three people with diabetes in India receive treatment, and this number is even lower in rural areas. One of the main challenges in controlling this diabetes epidemic is the lack of proper education and awareness about the disease. In many parts of the country, people still lack basic knowledge about its symptoms and risks. This ignorance, combined with the high costs of medical care, makes it difficult for many to seek timely treatment, which often leads to complications such as heart disease, kidney failure, and blindness. Experts argue that immediate action is needed to address this crisis. They call for greater investment in public health infrastructure, particularly in rural areas, as well as stronger regulations to curb the growth of alternative medicine and quackery.

This phenomenon has resulted in a paradox where patients often know more about various treatments than their doctors, who are overwhelmed with the sheer volume of cases. The situation is exacerbated by the rising commercialization of healthcare in urban areas, where hospitals and clinics are increasingly profit-driven, sometimes leading to unnecessary treatments and high medical bills. With diabetes treatment costing a substantial amount over a lifetime, many patients are unable to afford the

calorie intake due to rising incomes, as well as a shift toward more sedentary lifestyles. This combination has led to a significant rise in type-2 diabetes, which is particularly dangerous as it often remains undiagnosed until it reaches advanced stages. Despite widespread awareness campaigns and government initiatives such as the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme, which aims to provide healthcare access to low-income populations, the situation remains grim. According to data from The Lancet, while the number of diabetes cases has increased, the rate of treatment has not kept pace. Only about one

Belgium Grants Sex Workers Maternity Leave, Pensions

Belgium’s decision to change the law was the result of months of protests in 2022, prompted by the lack of state support during the Covid pandemic. One of those at the forefront was Victoria, president of the Belgian Union of Sex Workers (UTSOPI) and previously an escort for 12 years. For her, it was a personal fight. Victoria regards prostitution as a social service, with sex being only about 10% of what she does.

“It’s giving people attention, listening to their stories, eating cake with them, dancing to waltz music,” she explains. “Ultimately, it’s about loneliness.”

But the illegality of her job before 2022 raised significant challenges. She worked in unsafe conditions, with no choice over her clients and her agency taking a big cut of her earnings.

Effect of 20-Minute Naps Every 4 Hours for a Week

The government must also prioritize preventive measures, such as promoting healthier eating habits and encouraging physical activity, to stem the growing tide of diabetes.

The situation has reached a point where diabetes is not just a medical issue but a socio-economic challenge that impacts the entire nation. Without swift intervention, India could face a public health disaster of unprecedented scale, with millions of people suffering from preventable complications, leading to a significant burden on the healthcare system. In conclusion, diabetes is not just a personal health issue for millions of Indians; it is a nationwide crisis. To address it effectively, the government must act decisively to improve access to healthcare, regulate alternative medicine practices, and invest in public health campaigns to educate the population about the dangers of this silent epidemic. Without comprehensive action, diabetes will continue to devastate lives across India, particularly among the most vulnerable sections of society.

Polyphasic sleep, where individuals take multiple short naps instead of a single long sleep, is a popular but controversial practice. A common variation involves 20-minute naps every four hours, totaling just two hours of sleep a day. Advocates claim benefits like increased productivity, but experts warn of significant drawbacks.

Dr. Jagadish Hiremath explains that this sleep pattern disrupts the natural circadian rhythm, leading to a reliance on REM sleep for restoration. While some claim enhanced focus, research suggests otherwise. Studies show sleep fragmentation impairs memory consolidation and cognitive function, slowing reaction times and decisionmaking. Sleep deprivation also elevates cortisol levels, disrupting metabolism and causing anxiety and fatigue.

Physiologically, polyphasic sleep increases the risk of cardiovascular issues, weakens the immune system, and raises blood pressure. Long-term disruptions to the circadian rhythm can result in hormonal imbalances, metabolic problems, and increased risks for obesity and metabolic syndrome. Chronic sleep debt impairs brain detoxification, emotional regulation, and can worsen mental health issues, including depression and anxiety.

A writ petition has been submitted to the High Court of Bangladesh, requesting a ban on the broadcast of all Indian television channels in the country. Lawyer Ekhlas Uddin Bhuiyan, who filed the petition, confirmed the development on Monday. The petition specifically calls for directives under Section 29 of the Cable Television Network Operation Act 2006 to prohibit the airing of Indian TV channels.

Jaishankar Highlights 3 Key Principles as India-China Ties Thaw

New Delhi: India-China ties - "abnormal" since April 2020, when the two militaries clashed in parts of eastern Ladakh, leading to fatalities on both sides for the first time in 45 years - have improved recently, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar told the Lok Sabha Tuesday, explaining that "continuous diplomatic engagement since then (has) set our ties in the direction of some improvement". India remains committed, Mr Jaishankar said, to engaging with China "through bilateral talks to arrive at a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable settlement for the border issue".

It is, however evident, he told Parliament, that management of border areas will require further attention in light of our recent experiences. He flagged three key principles to be observed in all circumstances. The first is that both sides should strictly respect and observe the LAC. The second is that neither should attempt to unilaterally alter the status quo, and the third is that agreements and understandings reached in the past must be fully abided by in their entirety.

"Members will recall the amassing of a large number of troops by China along the LAC (Line of Actual Control) in eastern Ladakh in April-May 2020 resulted in face-offs with our forces at a number of points. The situation also led to disruption of patrolling activities," the EAM began his remarks.

The BJP legislature party will meet at Vidhan Bhavan this morning during which party MLAs are expected to choose their leader. While Mr Fadnavis is seen as a frontrunner for the Chief Minister's post, the delay in the BJP announcing its choice for the top post has given room to speculation. The three leaders of Mahayuti are likely to meet after the BJP MLAs' meeting. A meeting with the Governor is expected tomorrow, on the eve of the swearing-in ceremony.

Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma arrived at the Foreign Ministry Office in Dhaka at 4 pm local time.Apart from the violence against the Hindu minority in Bangladesh, that New Delhi has raised on several occasions with Dhaka, tensions between both sides have also been high since former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India after being forced to step down by protesters.

"If Gaza Hostages Are Not Released...": Donald Trump's Big Warning To Hamas

Washington: US President-elect Donald Trump on Monday warned Gaza militants of massive repercussions if hostages are not released by the time he takes office.

The threat comes after exhaustive diplomacy by outgoing President Joe Biden's administration that has so far failed to secure a deal that would both end Israel's war in Gaza and free hostages seized 14 months ago.

"If the hostages are not released prior to January 20, 2025, the date that I proudly assume Office as President of the United States, there will be ALL HELL TO PAY in the Middle East, and for those in charge who perpetrated these atrocities against Humanity," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

"Those responsible will be hit harder than anybody has been hit in the long

Musk's record $56bn pay deal rejected for second time

Tesla chief executive Elon Musk's record-breaking $56bn (£47bn) pay award will not be reinstated, a judge has ruled.

The decision in the Delaware court comes after months of legal wrangling and despite it being approved by shareholders and directors in the summer.

Judge Kathaleen McCormick upheld her previous decision from January, in which she argued that board members were too heavily influenced by Mr Musk. Reacting to the ruling, Mr Musk wrote on X: "Shareholders should control company votes, not judges."

Tesla vowed to appeal against the ruling, saying the decision was "wrong".

"This ruling, if not overturned, means that judges and plaintiffs’ lawyers run Delaware companies rather than their rightful owners – the shareholders," the electric car company said in a post on X. Judge McCormick said the pay package would have been the largest ever for the

127 Indian companies committed to net-zero targets: Report

Mumbai: (IANS) About 127 companies in India are committed to net-zero targets, according to a report.

The report by ICRA ESG Ratings’ showed that about 7 per cent of these belong to high emissions sectors like construction materials and mining, while others are from sectors like textiles, software, and services -- typically considered to have low to medium levels of carbon footprint. The report on science-based target initiative (SBTi) commitments by Indian companies reveals a significant shift towards renewable energy in the power sector particularly among companies with net-zero commitments, resulting in reduced emissions. SBTi is a voluntary target-setting initiative whereby companies can commit to setting science-based targets and have their objectives independently assessed and validated. Commitments and target taking are done through stated sector-wise guidelines by SBTi. The UK leads globally with the highest number of companies committed to SBTi net-zero targets, and India ranks sixth. On the other hand, China was found with the lowest share of companies with such commitments. This is despite being the largest emitter, the report said.

Mr Musk, the boss of X (formerly Twitter) and SpaceX as well as Tesla, is the world's richest person. His current net worth is estimated at around $350bn, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

He has used his platform to make his views known on a vast array of topics, and his status seems set to climb higher still following Donald Trump's victory in the 2024 US presidential election. The president-elect has picked Mr Musk to lead a newly created Department of Government Efficiency (or Doge - like the dog-related meme).

US-China Chip War Erupts, India May Benefit

The US and China have intensified their trade war with new restrictions targeting high-tech exports. After the US imposed export controls on chip-making equipment, software, and high-bandwidth memory chips, China retaliated by banning the export of gallium, germanium, antimony, and other critical materials used in advanced technology. This ongoing conflict creates opportunities for neutral economies like India, which have gained from the US-China trade tensions since Donald Trump’s presidency. As China’s export share to the US declined from 2019, countries like India, Vietnam, and Mexico have seen a rise in export opportunities to the US. China’s latest export ban follows an earlier move requiring exporters to apply for licenses for certain strategically important materials. The US, meanwhile, has expanded its list of Chinese companies subject to export restrictions. International Monetary Fund (IMF)

Tea to be rescued by vape maker for £10m

First Deputy Managing Director Gita Gopinath highlighted the role of non-aligned nations like India in mitigating the effects of global trade fragmentation. Unlike the Cold War era, today’s non-aligned countries have greater economic influence and are more integrated into global supply chains.

Gopinath emphasized that current trade fragmentation is more costly than during the Cold War. Back then, global goods trade to GDP was 16%, compared to 45% today. She also noted that rising protectionism is worsening the situation, with many countries adopting inward-looking policies. India is positioning itself to capitalize on these shifts. The government plans to increase funding for its chip manufacturing incentive policy from $10 billion to $15 billion. Tata, in partnership with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation, is building India’s first commercial chip fabrication plant.

Typhoo Tea has been rescued by vape maker Supreme in a £10m deal which it said would keep the brand "in British hands". The 120-year-old teamaker fell in to administration in November as its sales slumped and debts rose. Manchesterbased Supreme makes the e-cigarette brand 88Vape and distributes nicotine and home products to supermarkets. Typhoo currently has fewer than 30 staff in the UK, mainly in sales and marketing, after much of its operations - both in the UK and abroad - have been outsourced over the years.

The IWF is used by major online services to help them detect and remove CSAM, and prevent its spread. Karan Johar is all set for his 2.0 version after the investment from Adar Poonawala and is rolling with feature films left right and center. However, according to our highly placed sources, Tharki is not the title of this romcom. A source informed Bollywood Hungama, "Karan Johar's next with R Madhavan and Fatima Sana Shaikh is directed by Vivek Soni, best known for Meenakshi Sundareshwar. After contemplating the title Tharki, the film is now called Aap Jaisa Koi. Karan is a big fan of this song and has decided to go ahead with the title."

"Diversity Sells Only When Profitable": Maanvi Gagroo

If I'm cast as a fat girl, while I appreciate the opportunity, it still means I'm being seen primarily through that lens

Maanvi Gagroo, currently celebrating the success of Half Love Half Arranged Season 2, is a vocal advocate for individuality, mental health, and body positivity. In a recent interview with NDTV, she reflected on the shifting perceptions of body image in the entertainment industry.

“The conversation around body image is evolving,” Maanvi said, emphasizing the growing representation of diverse body types on screen. “It’s heartening to see people of all shapes, sizes, and appearances represented. This shift is positive and signifies progress.”

However, she highlighted that the entertainment industry remains a business. “If diversity and representation sell, they’ll embrace it; if not, they likely won’t,” she explained, addressing the misconception that diversity is simply about physical traits like weight, skin tone, or height. “True diversity should go beyond ticking boxes.”

Maanvi shared her frustration about being categorized by appearance rather than talent. While roles like Ujda Chaman required her physicality for the plot, projects like Tripling and Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan allowed her to be seen beyond such labels. “These roles are meaningful because they showcase actors for their skills, not their looks.”

Pakistan's Champions Trophy Hosting Hopes Fade

The future of the ICC Champions Trophy has been covered in a veil of uncertainty after India held firm on its stance not to send the men's cricket team to Pakistan.

Former spinner Harbhajan Singh reaffirmed his stance by stating that he doesn't "expect" that the Indian team will travel to Pakistan for next year's ICC Champions Trophy. The future of the ICC Champions Trophy has been covered in a veil of uncertainty after India held firm on its stance to not send the men's cricket team to Pakistan. Jasmine Paolini Leads Italy To Fifth Billie Jean King Cup Title

Italy won the Billie Jean King Cup for the fifth time as Jasmine Paolini beat Rebecca Sramkova to secure a dominant 2-0 win over Slovakia on Wednesday.

World number four Paolini triumphed 6-2, 6-1 in the second singles rubber to follow up Lucia Bronzetti's 6-2, 6-4 victory against Viktoria Hruncakova.

Italy were runners-up to Canada in last year's final but went one better in Malaga to become world champions for the first time since 2013.

The victory capped a stunning year for Paolini who finished as runner-up at Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

"Unbelievable year, unbelievable, to finish like this with the Billie Jean King cup, it's amazing, I don't have words to describe it," said Paolini.

"I'm trying just to enjoy it, it's important to understand where you are, I feel lucky to be in this position, I feel lucky to be part of this team...

"I'm really happy that this year we could bring the trophy home again." Slovakia, who won the competition in 2002, had never lost a BJK Cup tie in Spain.

I always keep talking to Jassi bhai (Bumrah): Mohammed Siraj

Mohammed Siraj has credited Jasprit Bumrah for helping him turn things around after an ordinary home series against New Zealand.

The 30-year-old endured a difficult home season, managing just two wickets in two Tests during India’s 0-3 loss to New Zealand.

“I always keep talking to Jassi bhai (Bumrah),” Siraj said after the India’s six-wicket win over Australian Prime Minister’s XI.

“Even before the first match, I spoke with him about what I was going through. And he just told me one thing — don’t run (chase) after wickets, just keep bowling consistently in one area and enjoy your bowling. If you still don’t get wickets, then you come ask me.

“So I enjoyed my bowling and I got wickets as well,” he added.

Siraj also spoke to former India bowling

“I spoke with Bharat Arun sir, that this is what’s happening with me, because he has known me for a while and he has seen my bowling from long time back. So, he just told me to enjoy and not run after wickets.

Just enjoy and you’ll get wickets.

“And before travelling, I met (fielding coach) Dilip sir in Hyderabad and we practised together as well. So, it felt good and now I’m enjoying.

Siraj on bowling with pink ball

Siraj looked in good rhythm in the warmup match against the Prime Minister’s XI, which was his first game with a pink ball.

“The (pink) ball has a synthetic feeling, it’s different from the red ball. The seam is very hard. It’s bright, and quite big. The more you practice with it, the better you get,” Siraj said.

“I think with the pink-ball, it’s better to bowl back of length. Because pitching it up, there’s not a lot of swing, so the more you hit the deck and get it to seam, it will be better for us,” he noted.

“I have heard that the ball swings a lot under the lights but I haven’t yet bowled with it under lights. So when we go to Adelaide and practice, we will try that. And the more practice we get, we’ll know more about what we have to do.”

BJP Names Observers, Shinde's Son Denies Deputy CM Rumors

Mumbai: The Bharatiya Janata Party has named Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and ex-Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani as the designated 'observers' for a meeting of its newly elected Maharashtra MLAs later today, at which the issue of the next Chief Minister may be settled.

No formal announcement has been made so far, but Devendra Fadnavis, a senior BJP leader and two-time former Chief Minister, is widely seen as the frontrunner for the post.

The BJP - which recorded a big win in last month's Assembly election, with help from allies Shiv Sena and NCP (the Eknath Shinde- and Ajit Pawar-led

factions) - has delayed naming the new Chief Minister amid backroom talks between the three allies over a powersharing agreement.

A rudimentary deal was announced last week; the Chief Minister will be from

US President Joe Biden pardons son Hunter

HiIndia Newsdesk

In a move that has surprised many, US President Joe Biden has issued a sweeping pardon for his son, Hunter Biden, reversing his earlier promise not to intervene in his son’s legal troubles. The pardon, announced on Sunday,

covers Hunter Biden’s convictions for gun and tax offences, as well as any other federal offences committed or potentially committed between 1 January 2014 and 1 December 2024. The decision marks a significant shift for Biden, who had previously vowed to restore respect for the rule of law and pledged he would not pardon his son. “No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases can reach any other conclusion than Hunter was singled out only because he is my son — and that is wrong,” the president said in a statement, as reported by Associated Press (AP).

2 Indian-Origin Canadians Arrested in Illinois with $40M Cocaine

Around 2:10 p.m., an Illinois State Police (ISP) trooper conducting a routine inspection on a Volvo truck-tractor semi-trailer discovered approximately 1,146 pounds of suspected cocaine, valued at around $40 million. The two occupants, Vanshpreet Singh, 27, and Manpreet Singh, 36, were arrested and charged with possession of cocaine, possession with intent to deliver, and cocaine trafficking. They are currently held at Henry County Jail, awaiting a pre-trial release hearing.

The inspection, part of ISP’s ongoing efforts to ensure highway safety and combat criminal activity, led to one of the largest drug busts in the state. ISP

the BJP and the two allies will each get a deputy, a repeat of the current formula but tilted in favour of the former. The BJP emerged as the single-largest party in the 288-seat House with 132 MLAs, while the Shinde Sena got 57 and the Pawar NCP group 41. That meant the BJP can form the government - with the majority mark at 145 - without help from the Sena faction, unlike the 2022 mid-term switch.

"Miscarriage Of Justice": Donald Trump

US President-elect Donald Trump has responded to outgoing US President Joe Biden's decision to pardon his son Hunter Biden who had been convicted on charges related to gun crimes and tax violations, calling it a "miscarriage of Justice". In a post on Truth Social, Trump said, "Does the Pardon given by Joe to Hunter include the J-6 Hostages, who have now been imprisoned for years? Such an abuse and miscarriage of Justice!"

Bumrah a Captaincy Option: Pujara

Director Brendan F. Kelly highlighted the agency’s focus on dismantling trafficking networks, stating, “From vehicle inspections to daily patrols, ISP is making communities safer.”

The Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) Chicago Field Division assisted in the operation, reflecting a collaborative effort between state and federal agencies to disrupt drug trafficking in Illinois. Officials emphasized the importance of this seizure, which significantly impacts community safety by removing a large quantity of narcotics from circulation. Interstate 80, where the bust occurred, is a known corridor for drug trafficking across state lines. Authorities are now investigating the source and intended destination of the cocaine.

Cheteshwar Pujara says Jasprit Bumrah has got all the qualities of being a good captain and will be a perfect candidate to replace Rohit Sharma, once the current India captain decides to step down. “He is (a viable long term captaincy option) with any doubt,” Pujara said on ESPN Cricinfo. “The way he has showed that in difficult circumstances when we had a tough series at home and when you are playing a first Test match in Australia and to put up a show like that.” “I think he has the capability of leading the team and he’s a team’s man. You look at him he never only talks about himself, he talks about the team, the other players. What advice he would give,” he added.

ICC to PCB: "Accept Hybrid Model or..."

The International Cricket Council has told Pakistan to either accept the 'Hybrid' model of hosting for next year's Champions Trophy or be prepared to be ousted from the event after the PCB's adamant stand led to an inconclusive meeting of its executive board on Friday. The emergency meeting was meant to thrash out the schedule of the event in February-March next year but could not achieve a consensus after Pakistan once again rejected the 'Hybrid' model despite India's firm refusal to travel there owing to security concerns.

No US Summons in Adani Case: Govt Confirms

The external affairs ministry on Friday said Washington had not served a summons or arrest warrant in the Adani case, a week after the US department of justice indicted industrialist Gautam Adani and six other senior executives of the Adani group on charges of bribing Indian officials. Responding to questions on the Adani indictment at the weekly briefing, external affairs ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said: “This is a legal matter involving private firms and individuals and the US department of justice. There are established procedures and legal avenues in such cases which we believe would be followed. The government of India was not informed in advance on the issue. We have not had any conversation on this matter with the US government.”

Eknath Shinde Vanishes: Shiv Sena Chief's Disappearing Act Stuns BJP

Shinde’s sudden dash to his village in western Maharashtra has left the BJP shocked, particularly as the Sena chief had, after emerging from Shah’s residence in Delhi, told reporters the meeting had been “positive and productive”

Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde abruptly left for his village in western Maharashtra on Friday, forcing the cancellation of a key meeting in Mumbai to finalize the new state government, sources said. His move highlights his displeasure with BJP pressure to accept the deputy chief minister’s post in the upcoming coalition government.

Shinde had returned to Mumbai after a late-night meeting in Delhi with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, where he described discussions as “positive and productive.” A follow-up meeting with BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis and NCP’s Ajit Pawar was scheduled for Friday but was postponed due to Shinde’s absence. While BJP leaders downplayed the situation, Sena insiders revealed Shinde is reluctant to serve as Fadnavis’s deputy, considering it a demotion from his role as outgoing chief minister. Shinde proposed that another Sena leader take the post, but the BJP is firm on him accepting it to project alliance unity. Shinde reportedly rejected an offer for a cabinet position in the central government but might agree to the deputy role if granted control of the home department. Meanwhile, Ajit Pawar is eyeing the finance portfolio and a central cabinet berth for a party colleague.

Hindu Leader Arrest: 17 ISKCON Accounts Frozen in Bangladesh

Dhaka: Bangladesh's authorities have ordered freezing for 30 days the bank accounts of 17 people associated with ISKCON, including its former member Chinmoy Krishna Das arrested this week on sedition charges, media reports said Friday. The move comes after the Bangladesh High Court rejected a petition seeking a ban on International Society for Krishna Consciousness

The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) sent these directives to different banks and financial institutions on Thursday, suspending all types of transactions related to these accounts for a month, newspaper Prothom Alo said.

US Colleges Urge Foreign Students To Return To Campus Ahead Of Trump's Swearing-In

Several US universities have issued travel advisories urging international students and staff to return before President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20, 2025, due to potential travel bans. Trump, set to become the 47th President, has pledged to sign executive orders on immigration and the economy on his first day in office, raising concerns about disruptions similar to those experienced during his first term in 2017.

David Elwell, Associate Dean at MIT’s International Students Office, highlighted the possibility of new visa and immigration policies impacting students traveling during the winter break. He advised them to assess potential delays at US embassies and have contingency plans

if entry visas are delayed.

The University of Massachusetts, Amherst, also recommended its international community return to the US before January 20. While not mandatory, the advisory stems from concerns over new policies that could be enacted immediately after Trump’s inauguration.

Wesleyan University’s Office of International Student Affairs expressed similar concerns, cautioning international students under F-1 visas to be in the US by January 19 to avoid re-entry issues.

India has overtaken China as the leading country of origin for international students in the US, with 331,602 students in 2023-24, a 23% increase, according to the Open Doors 2024 Report. China remains second with 277,398 students, despite a 4% decline. Trump’s 2017 executive order banning nationals from seven Muslim-majority countries had caused significant disruptions. Universities are now preparing for possible similar actions, emphasizing caution and early return for their international communities.

Donald Trump will take the oath of office on January 20 and has announced that he will sign several executive orders on issues of economy and immigration on his first day as the 47th President of the United States.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has directed the management committee of the Shahi Idgah Masjid in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal to approach the Allahabad High Court to challenge a trial court's order for a survey of the mosque. The survey was based on claims by Hindu petitioners that the mosque was built over a temple. Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna emphasized maintaining peace, halting the trial court's actions until the High Court hears the case.

“Peace and harmony must be ensured. We do not want anything untoward to happen,” said the Chief Justice, noting that the trial court hearing scheduled for January 8 will not proceed.

Violent Clashes Over Survey

Earlier this week, violent clashes erupted in Sambhal when a survey team led by an "Advocate Commissioner" attempted to inspect the mosque. A large crowd gathered near the site, leading to stonepelting and the torching of over ten vehicles. Police responded with tear gas, resulting in several deaths and over 30 injured officers.

Mexico leader responds to Trump claim she agreed to stop migration

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has sought to clarify details of a conversation she had with US President-elect Donald Trump, after the two leaders offered differing accounts of the call.

Following Wednesday's call, Trump said Sheinbaum had "agreed to stop Migration through Mexico, and into the United States, effectively closing our Southern Border". This prompted Sheinbaum to say she had merely reiterated Mexico's position, which she said was "not to close borders but to build bridges between governments and people". The call followed Trump's announcement on Monday that, upon

taking office in January, he would slap an

across-the-board tariff of 25% on Mexico and Canada, and a 10% tariff on China. He said the import duties on Mexico and Canada would only be removed once illegal immigration and drug trafficking to the US had stopped. The announcement was initially met

with combative language from President Sheinbaum, who vowed earlier on Wednesday to retaliate if the US triggered a trade war. "If there are US tariffs, Mexico would also raise tariffs," she said of the proposed duties, which appear to breach the USMCA trade deal that Trump himself struck in 2018 during his first presidency between the US, Mexico and Canada. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, the Mexican president said she did not specifically discuss tariffs in the phone call with Trump but that they had addressed immigration and fentanyl trafficking - the reasons Trump had named for imposing the tariffs in the first place.

destroyed during Babur’s invasion in 1526-27. Petitioners argue historical texts like Baburnamah and Ain-e-Akbari document this destruction. They demand Hindu access to the site, accusing the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) of neglecting a protected monument.

The mosque committee opposes the survey, citing the Places of Worship Act, 1991, which protects religious sites' status as of August 15, 1947. Samajwadi Party MP Ziaur Rehman Barq condemned the survey as an attempt to disrupt communal harmony.

Over 700 volunteers supported this initiative, delivering meals to homeless shelters, senior residences, and soup kitchens. Actors Kallol Nandi and Shubhagato Bhattacharjee delivered standout performances, complemented by Pranjal Karmakar’s minimalist set design and evocative lighting, which heightened the drama. Skillful use of sound and props added rich texture to the narrative.

The open-ended conclusion sparked vibrant post-show discussions. “It’s not just a play; it’s an experience that stays with you,” noted an audience member. Playwright and director Shubhagato Bhattacharjee shared, “We aimed to explore universal themes of ego, greed, and revenge within a taut thriller. The audience’s overwhelming response has been deeply rewarding.”

The Game solidifies Aabaha’s reputation as a powerhouse in regional theater, proving once again the enduring magic of the stage.

“This effort embodies selfless service and equality, values central to Sikh teachings,” said one organizer. The initiative also aims to instill these values in future generations. "Oneness is not just for Sikhs but for all humanity. No one should be hungry or unequal," added Singh, a key organizer. Harleen Kaur, a long-time volunteer, expressed gratitude for the program’s growth:

“From serving 1,500 meals in our first year to over 20,000 annually, it’s heartwarming to see so many people come together.”

LSM’s success has inspired similar programs in countries like India, the UK, and Australia. “Our Langar is a beacon of hope and unity, reflecting the true spirit of Thanksgiving—care, respect, and humanity across all boundaries,” Singh emphasized. Stuns in Archival Corset at British Fashion Awards Mona Patel

After a spectacular appearance at the MET Gala, Mona Patel is back — this time making heads turn in an archival Christian Lacroix ensemble.

For the British Fashion Awards 2024, the Gujarat-born businesswoman chose a silver corset adorned with pearls and butterflies from the 1996 Spring/Summer haute couture collection and paired it with a silver skirt. Middle-parted hair, boxy brows, and nude lips added the perfect finishing touches to her chic evening glam, as she accessorised the look with diamond earpieces and rings. But can you guess how much the corset costs today? According to 1stdibs, the vintage piece is worth $168,285, which roughly translates to Rs 1,42,59,615.93!

“Commissioned by Christian Lacroix and skillfully brought to life by the renowned Mr Pearl Atelier, this corset is made of the finest materials, meticulously hand-woven from metallic silk taffeta, as thousands of hand-sewn crystals adorn its surface. At the shoulder, a delicate silk organza beaded butterfly delicately perches. The encrusted jewels, meticulously assembled from a myriad of Swarovski

Digital creator Diet Sabya took to social media to share their thoughts on the outfit. “What a look. This is FASHION. The most incredible museum-worthy corset from the iconic 1996 Christian Lacroix Haute Couture collection (that she or her stylist bought!!) paired with a silver skirt and her signature glam at the #britishfashionawards. 10/10. No notes. Absolutely none,” read the caption. Patel commented on the post with a cheeky, “My backup look for the MET”.

In case you don’t remember, the Indian fashion entrepreneur stole the show at the MET earlier this year with her “mechanical butterflies” dress, styled by popular stylist Law Roach. The dress won the hearts of Gala enthusiasts and netizens. The nude floor-grazing sculpted gown with a butterfly-shaped corset and scalloped train, crafted by Iris Van Herpen, was perfectly in tune with the theme of “The Garden of Time.”

Empowering Change: The American Lung Cancer Screening Initiative

LOS ANGELES, CA - The American Lung Cancer Screening Initiative (ALCSI), founded in 2018 by Dr. Chi-Fu Jeffrey Yang of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, is revolutionizing lung cancer awareness in the U.S. Led by Executive Director Priyanka Senthil, a Rice University graduate, ALCSI has grown from a team of 50 to over 500 members across 50+ university chapters.

Senthil joined ALCSI in 2021 and was struck by lung cancer’s grim reality: it is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S., often detected too late for surgery.

Her leadership has enabled ALCSI to educate over 35,000 people through 800+ community events, emphasizing the importance of early detection via low-dose computed tomography (LDCT).

Under Senthil, ALCSI has forged impactful partnerships, including one with LUNGevity Foundation, hosting 42 awareness walks in November 2024, engaging 1,700 participants. The initiative has also secured 525+ proclamations from mayors and governors and released 100+ public service announcements promoting lung cancer screening.

Chicago’s Deadly Gun Violence.

Are the Desis Bearing the Brunt?

The Thanksgiving week in Chicago ended with a tragedy for an Indian family. An Indian student who had arrived in the US just three months ago for his masters’ program was shot dead. 22-year-old Sai Teja Nakarupu was working a night shift at a gas station mall in Chicago.

The death of yet another Indian student, this time from Concordia University, has once again brought the focus on the question which is on the minds of every Indian and Indian-American parent in the country – how safe are brown young men and women in America.

In Chicago particularly, a city often in the news for crime and violence, many in the minority community feel affected by the growing gun violence. The desi community also feels that often young people of color find themselves targets of gun violence much more than their white counterparts – a large segment of the community also feels that the problem is acutely displayed in Chicago.

While no independent studies have been done on the effect of gun violence in the brown or South Asian community, both parents and youngsters confirm that they do feel more vulnerable especially in the less diverse areas of Chicago.

Many Indian American parents rattled by the growing violence are also increasingly considering trying to send their kids to colleges in the city they reside. Gurnee, Illinois based Saran Shah says, “My son will be finishing his high school next year and we are trying that most of his college applications are in the universities in and around the Illinois area. The only reason for this is that we just want to be more vigilant and would prefer that during weekends and even other shorter breaks he can spend time at home. “

studies, has influenced screening guidelines, addressing racial disparities in detection and treatment. She also collaborates with Congress to pass resolutions highlighting early detection’s importance.

ALCSI continues innovating with campaigns like the Plus One Campaign and a podcast amplifying survivor and caregiver voices. Senthil’s visionary leadership has transformed ALCSI into a beacon of public health advocacy, proving that young leaders can drive meaningful change, one community at a time.

NY Marks Meatless Day with Green Hands Movement

YORK, NY — New York City came alive on November 25 as the Green Hands Movement marked International Meatless Day, promoting sustainability and compassion. Organized by the Sadhu Vaswani Center for World Peace, the initiative urged New Yorkers to “Take the Veg Pledge” and embrace a cruelty-free lifestyle.

Key city landmarks such as Chelsea Market, the Meatpacking District, Little Island, and Times Square became centers of activity. Advocates dressed as farm animals and waving green foam hands encouraged passersby to commit to a meatfree day. A massive Times Square billboard featuring Sadhu Vaswani, the movement's spiritual inspiration, captivated thousands with the message: “Celebrate Meatless Day: Take the Veg Pledge.”

Study Reveals Homicide Rate 20 times higher for Black

The fears are not unfounded, as there are surveys and statistics that do support this scary reality. According to new surveys from University of Chicago Crime Lab, in 2022, the homicide rate in Chicago was 20 times higher for Black residents than it was for white residents.

The Shahs are not alone, Murli Kumar who is based in Buffalo Grove, a suburb in Illinois decided to send their daughter to a University in Illinois even though she had got admission in a couple of universities in the West Coast too. He says, “It is reassuring that on a weekend she has assignments and cannot come, we can at least go and spend time with her over lunch or dinner. This way even though she lives in a dorm she gets to spend more time with us and we get to be with her during her shorter breaks too.

As per the Chicago Police Department, there have been almost 1,200 total reported shootings in the city As of July 7, 2024. Indian parents have also noticed a spike in shootings and deadly encounters near a long weekend or holiday in the city. A student at a local university in Chicago on the condition of anonymity says, “We are extra careful if we are venturing out during a holiday weekend or too late at night. We move in groups, avoid dark alleys or deserted areas and stick to safer neighborhoods. We often underestimate the fears of falling prey to street violence to our parents back in India because we do not want them to worry. But yes, it is not a feasible solution and we wish more was done to eliminate this growing fear.”

Some parents living in suburban Chicago, do not allow their high-school kids to go to the city all by themselves. Not just the desis, even local Americans feel uncomfortable sending their kids to some areas in Chicago all by themselves. A Libertyville, Illinois resident Jenny says, “I am not allowing my daughter to go to the city without a responsible adult. There is no way I would feel safe with so much happening in and around the city area.”

Dr. Sudhir Parikh, physician and media owner, highlighted the ripple effects of a single meatless day. “It benefits the planet, our health, and our souls. Start with one day, and let it spark a lifelong journey,” he said. The campaign united medical professionals, activists, and influencers, including actress Justin Adorno, activist Jamie Logan, filmmaker Neha Lohia, and vegan advocate Victoria Moran. Prominent doctors such as Dr. Anna Yusim and Dr. Eva Selhub also lent their support. “This is just the beginning,” said Ashok Lalwani, Center President. “A meatfree day can inspire lasting change for compassion, health, and sustainability.” With thousands of symbolic green hands raised, the movement showcased the power of collective action, urging everyone to join the journey toward a kinder, more sustainable world.

A Bloomberg report reveals that Nebraska businessman William R. Hailer testified in a U.S. federal court that Raveendran sent him a $10,700 plane ticket to Dubai days before his scheduled testimony. Hailer also alleged that Raveendran offered $500,000, raising concerns of potential influence on his testimony. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge John T. Dorsey suggested the claims might merit a federal investigation. The allegations tie into broader accusations that Raveendran diverted millions in loan proceeds, including $11.25 million wired to Rose Lake Inc., a company managed by Hailer, to create the illusion of financial stability for creditors.
