Trump loses third bid for judge to step aside in hush money case

NEW YORK: - A New York judge declined for a third time to step aside from the case in which Donald Trump was convicted of charges involving hush money paid to a porn star, dismissing the former U.S. president's claim of conflict of interest related to political consultancy work by the judge's daughter. As he did in April and in August 2023, Justice Juan Merchan in a decision released on Wednesday denied a request by Trump's lawyers that he recuse himself from the first case involving criminal charges against a former U.S. president. Merchan is scheduled to sentence Trump on Sept. 18. "Defendant has provided nothing new for this Court to consider. Counsel has

Trump to tout economic plan after union rights row

Former President Donald Trump is set to present his economic proposals and hit out at the "hardships created by the Harris-Biden Administration" at a North Carolina rally on Wednesday, as he faces increased scrutiny from union workers. Trump has come under fire from union members for voicing support for firing workers who strike, which he brought up during a social media conversation with Tesla CEO Elon Musk earlier this week. The United Automobile Workers (UAW) union has since filed charges with federal labour regulators on accusations of intimidation.

US says it aims to 'lower temperature' in Middle East

The US is aiming "to turn the temperature down" in the Middle East, the country's ambassador to the UN has said, as fears of an Iranian retaliatory attack on Israel loom. On Tuesday, Linda Thomas-Greenfield told the UN Security Council in New York the US wanted to "deter and defend against any future attack and avoid regional conflict". There are fears Iran could retaliate against Israel following July's assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran - something Israel has not said it was behind.

merely repeated arguments that have already been denied by this and higher courts" and were "rife with inaccuracies and unsubstantiated claims," Merchan wrote in the ruling, dated Aug. 13. A spokesperson for the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office declined to comment. "The Highly Conflicted Judge should have long ago recused himself from this case," Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said in a statement. Trump was found guilty by a jury on May 30 on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records for having covered up former personal lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen's $130,000 payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels to avert a sex scandal before the 2016 U.S. election.

attacks Harris over US border policing – was it her job?

From its opening line, Donald Trump’s first television advertisement blasting rival Kamala Harris took aim at what his campaign believes is her biggest weakness - immigration.

“This is America’s border tsar,” a narrator said, over images of the vice-president dancing, “and she’s failed us.”

A series of statistics followed, illustrating

what the Trump campaign says took place under Ms Harris, who was given a role in dealing with the border crisis by President Joe Biden soon after his inauguration.

The figures in the video ranged from 10 million illegal border crossings to 250,000 fentanyl-related overdose deaths.

The voice concluded: “Kamala Harris: failed, weak, dangerously liberal.”

The Harris campaign responded that the former president was running on “his trademark lies”.

It comes as little surprise that the Trump campaign took its first big swing at Ms Harris as the “failed border tsar”, blaming her for the high numbers of undocumented immigrants at the US southern border.

Union Files Labour Charges Against Trump, Musk For "Threatening" Workers

Detroit: The United Auto Workers Union said on Tuesday it has filed complaints with the National Labor Relations Board against Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk over attempts to threaten and intimidate workers.

It is unclear whether the NLRB would take action against Trump for his comments on Monday during a twohour conversation with Musk that was broadcast on social media platform X. The UAW seized upon Trump's remarks as the union rallies behind Democratic presidential candidate and Vice President Kamala Harris and encourages its nearly 400,000 workers to vote for her over Trump. The issue is especially pertinent in battleground states like Michigan which could determine who wins the White House in November. The

UAW endorsed Harris at the end of July. "You're the greatest cutter," Trump said to Musk during Monday's conversation, complimenting the CEO's ability to cut costs by saying he would not tolerate workers going on strike. "I mean, I look at what you do. You walk in, you just say: 'You want to quit?' They go on strike - I won't mention the name of the company - but they go on strike. And you say: 'That's okay, you're all gone.'" Musk chuckled but did not respond to Trump's comments, making it harder for the NLRB to find him liable for making illegal threats to workers at his companies, said Wilma Liebman, chair of the NLRB under former President Barack Obama. Under federal law, workers cannot be fired for going on strike, and threatening to do so is illegal under the National Labor Relations Act, the UAW said in a statement.

Slowest US inflation since 2021 raises rate cut hope

Consumer prices in the US rose at the slowest pace in more than three years last month, bolstering the case for the central bank to start cutting interest rates. Overall, prices rose 2.9% over the 12 months to July, the smallest annual increase since March 2021 and down from 3% in June, the Labor Department said.

The monthly inflation report was being closely watched after signs of weaker-than-expected jobs growth in July sparked stock market turmoil and recession fears earlier this month.

Analysts said the figures should help convince the Federal Reserve that high borrowing costs are working to return inflation back to normal, despite upticks in housing and food costs.

Trump Praises Elon Musk for Firing Workers

Washington: Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's interview with billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk finally got underway on Musk's social media platform X on Monday evening, following a lengthy delay caused by technical problems that kept many users from accessing the live stream.

Musk, who has endorsed Trump, began the event at 8:42 p.m. (0042 GMT Tuesday), more than 40 minutes after the scheduled start time. He blamed the difficulties on a distributed denial-of-service attack, in which a server or network is flooded with traffic in an attempt to shut it down, though his claim was not confirmed.

More than 1.3 million people were listening about 45 minutes into the conversation, according to a counter on X.

At the time, Trump mocked DeSantis on his own, social media platform, Truth Social. "My Red Button is bigger, better, stronger, and is working (TRUTH!)" Trump posted, "Yours does not."

Ahead of Monday's event, Musk had written: "Am going to do some system scaling tests tonight & tomorrow in advance of the conversation." X did not respond to requests for details or evidence of the alleged cyberattack.

Russia Extends Petrol Exports Ban Until 2025 To "Maintain Stable Situation"

Moscow: The Russian government announced Wednesday that it was reintroducing a ban on petrol exports for another six months to "maintain a stable situation" on the domestic fuel market after major price hikes.

The government said in a statement that it has "brought in a restriction on exports of petrol from September 1 to December 31, 2024".

The measure is intended to keep prices stable "during a period of continued seasonal demand and planned repairs on oil refineries", the government said. Russia in March introduced a sixmonth ban on petrol exports, but then suspended it temporarily between May and July, saying the domestic market was saturated.

The new restriction will not affect deliveries carried out under intergovernmental agreements including those with the Eurasian

Japan set for new PM as Kishida bows out as party leader

Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida will not seek re-election as leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which he says needs a "new start". The 67-year-old LDP veteran is expected to step down as PM after the party elects a new leader in September. Support for Mr Kishida, who has been PM since 2021, has fallen in the wake of a corruption scandal involving his party, rising living costs and a slumping yen. His approval ratings had plummeted to 15.5% last month - the lowest for a PM in more than a decade.

Venezuela opposition urges global protest over poll result

Venezuela's opposition coalition has called for protests to be held worldwide on 17 August in support of its claim to have won the country's presidential election.

President Nicolás Maduro was declared the winner by the governmentcontrolled electoral commission, which handed him a third consecutive term in office.

The opposition says its candidate, Edmundo González, was the real winner, and has called for the commission to release detailed data from polling stations.

Economic Union member countries -- Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia -- the government said. Despite its massive energy reserves, Russia announced a similar export ban on diesel and petrol last year as pump

Israeli Airstrikes Target Gaza Ahead Of Ceasefire Talks

Gaza: Israeli air strikes targeted Gaza on Wednesday ahead of ceasefire talks that the United States hopes will stop Iran striking Israel in retaliation for the killing of a Hamas leader. Iran and its allies blamed Israel for the

July 31 killing of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran during a visit for the inauguration of President Masoud Pezeshkian. Israel has not commented.

The West has urged Iran to stand down its threat to avenge his death, which came hours after an Israeli strike in Beirut killed a senior commander of Hezbollah, the powerful Iran-backed rebel group in Lebanon.

The escalation has raised fears of a wider conflict after more than 10 months of war in Gaza, which has claimed nearly 40,000 lives, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-run Palestinian territory.

Ukraine advances farther into Russia : Zelensky says

Ukrainian officials have been expanding on what they see as a “buffer zone” inside Russia, which they say will protect better communities in northern Ukraine.

Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said Wednesday that during “this summer alone, the Russians launched more than 2,000 strikes on the territory of Sumy region. They used missiles, artillery, UAVs, attack drones, and mortars.”

Klymenko said more than 20,000 people had been evacuated. Sumy shares a long border with Russian territory. He also said that Russian civilians

Thai court dismisses PM for violating constitution

A Thai court has dismissed Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin for appointing to his cabinet a former lawyer who was once jailed. The Constitutional Court ruled that Mr Srettha had violated the "rules on ethics" with "the display of defiant behaviour".

The 62-year-old Srettha, who has been in power for less than a year, is the third PM in 16 years to be removed by the same court. He will be replaced by an interim leader until Thailand's parliament convenes to elect a new prime minister.

Volodymyr Artiukh, the head of Sumy regional military administration, told Ukrainian television Wednesday there had been “an increase in the enemy’s use of aviation in recent days.

The Russian defense ministry had previously said that its aviation was attacking Ukrainian reserves in Sumy. Artiukh said that authorities were enforcing an exclusion zone of 20 kilometers (about 12 miles) from the border.

“This is done to avoid endangering the civilian population. There are cases when citizens return after leaving,” he said.

Police in New Zealand are racing to trace sweets containing "potentially lethal levels of methamphetamine" after they were distributed by a charity in Auckland. Up to 400 people may have received the sweets from Auckland City Mission as part of a food parcel, said the anti-poverty charity. The sweets were donated anonymously by a member of the public in a sealed retail package, it added.

The incident has shaken the country and triggered nationwide protests. At demonstrations in medical colleges and hospitals across the country, doctors have demanded security on duty.

The protests across cities began at 11.55 pm. It has been described as, "For women's independence on the midnight of independence".

Posters sharing locations of the protest were being shared on social media, with new spots being added as more and more people across Bengal's suburbs joined. In fact, the protest, which has been named, "Women, reclaim the night", is also being staged outside Delhi's AIIMS and Chittaranjan Park.

Mamata Backs CBI Probe Order, Criticizes Opposition for Protests

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday endorsed the Calcutta High Court's decision to hand over the RG Kar Medical College case to the CBI but criticised the CPI(M) and BJP for politicising the incident and inciting protests, drawing parallels to Bangladesh student unrest.

The TMC supremo also demanded that the CBI solve the case by Sunday, noting that Kolkata Police had already completed 90 per cent of the probe, and called for the culprits to be hanged.

The CM appealed to the protesting doctors to end their cease-work and return to work, as healthcare services have been severely impacted.

US Navy's Newest Air-To-Air Missile Could Tilt Balance In South China

Singapore: The U.S. Navy's deployment of new extremely long-range air-toair missiles in the Indo-Pacific could erase China's advantage in aerial reach, experts say, part of an intensifying focus on projecting power amid high tensions in the region.

The AIM-174B, developed from the readily available Raytheon SM-6 air defence missile, is the longest-range such missile the United States has ever fielded and was officially acknowledged in July.

RG Kar Medical College and Hospital's former Principal Dr Sandip Ghosh, who was pulled up by the Calcutta High Court for not being proactive after the doctor was found dead on campus, had earlier denied making such a remark. In her Facebook post, Rimjhim had invited people to join her near a bus stand in Jadavpur. She had not expected such a huge response. From one location, gatherings were planned at three. And the count crossed 300 before it transcended boundaries of the state. Men, too, joined the gatherings to express solidarity with the cause. Many celebrities have said they would be out tonight.

Weakening the Military Weakens the Nation: Pakistan Army Chief

Pakistan's Army chief General Asim Munir has said that any attempt to undermine the nation's powerful military is tantamount to weakening the country.

Addressing the Azadi Parade at the Pakistan Military Academy on the eve of the country's 78th Independence Day, the Chief of Army Staff also underscored the importance of maintaining national unity amidst efforts by foreign powers using "digital terrorism" to create a gulf between state institutions and the people of Pakistan.

Morne Morkel appointed India's bowling coach

It has three key advantages: it can fly several times farther than the next-best U.S. option, the AIM-120 AMRAAM; it does not require new production lines; and it is compatible with the aircraft of at least one ally, Australia.

Crucially, a weapon such as the AIM174B, which can attack aerial targets as far away as 400 km (250 miles), outranges China's PL-15 missile, allowing U.S. jets to keep threats farther from aircraft carriers, and safely strike "high-value" Chinese targets, such as command-and-control planes.

"The United States can ensure the safety of their important assets, such as carrier groups, and launch long-range strikes on PLA targets," said Chieh Chung, a researcher at a Taipei-based thinktank, the Association of Strategic Foresight, using an abbreviation for the People's Liberation Army.

Former South Africa pace great Morne Morkel has been roped in as the Indian cricket team's new bowling coach, BCCI secretary Jay Shah told PTI on Wednesday, completing the appointment of new head coach Gautam Gambhir's preferred support staff.

It is understood that the 39-year-old, who replaces Paras Mhambrey, will take over as the bowling coach from the Bangladesh series that starts with the opening Test in Chennai from September 19. He has been appointed till the end of the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.

In a rare show of agreement in the highly polarized US presidential campaign, both candidates support exempting workers’ tips from taxes. Former President Donald Trump, the Republican candidate, proposed the idea first at a rally in June, followed by Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate, who endorsed the plan recently. This move aims to appeal to service industry workers like restaurant staff, bartenders, and taxi drivers, who rely heavily on tips. Both candidates announced their support in Nevada, a key swing state where over 20% of the workforce is employed in the hospitality industry. Trump said he adopted the policy after hearing complaints from a waitress about her taxes. While Republicans have incorporated the idea into their platform, some Democrats, including President Joe Biden, have also expressed support. Currently, US law requires employees to report tips over $20 per month, with taxes then deducted by the federal government. In 2018, Americans reported $38 billion in tips, averaging $6,000 per taxpayer. However, a Yale analysis found that

Starbucks replaces boss after sales slump

The boss of Starbucks is leaving the company after less than two years in charge as the coffee chain looks for a fix for its flagging sales. Chief executive Laxman Narasimhan is stepping down and will be replaced by Brian Niccol, the head of Mexican grill chain Chipotle, the company said. The shakeup comes as Starbucks is grappling with a slump in sales amid a backlash to price increases and boycotts sparked by the Israel-Gaza war. Howard Schultz said he believed Mr Niccol was "the leader Starbucks needs at a pivotal moment in its history".

Why Trump and Harris both say 'no tax on tips'

Both candidates announced their support in Nevada, a key swing state where over 20% of the workforce is employed in the hospitality industry.

about 37% of tipped workers earn so little that they do not pay federal income taxes.

The financial impact of eliminating taxes on tips remains uncertain, with estimates suggesting it could cost at least $107 billion over a decade. Critics argue that it might shift the tax burden to non-tipped workers and potentially expand tipping to more professions, exacerbating the issue of employers avoiding paying minimum wages to tipped employees.

Indian FMCG companies resume operations in violence-hit Bangladesh

Indian FMCG companies with operations in violence-hit Bangladesh say their business in the neighbouring country is slowly returning to normalcy after being shut for about a week.

Leading FMCG companies, including Marico, Dabur, Emami, Pidilite Industries, Britannia and Godrej Consumer Products, have operations in Bangladesh, which recently faced violent clashes leading to a regime change there.

Besides, leading QSR chain Jubilant FoodWorks Ltd (JFL), a master franchisee of American pizza restaurant chain Domino's, also operates around 30 stores in Bangladesh. Marico, which has the biggest exposure in Bangladesh, has informed the bourses that its manufacturing operations in the country resumed at normal scale on August 11.

"Operating conditions in the market have been gradually improving and a large majority of our retail sales force and distributors have been functioning since last week," the Mariwala-promoted FMCG maker said.

In Bangladesh, Marico operates in personal care, baby care, edible oil and food segments, and has contributed 44 per cent to the international sales of the company. It has two factories in Gazipur, Dhaka, and five depots.

Madhabi Puri Buch Redeemed Funds via Husband After Sebi Appointment: Hindenburg

Hindenburg Research has renewed its attack on Madhabi Puri Buch, the Chairperson of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), with fresh allegations concerning her financial ties to the Adani group. According to a report by Indian Express, Hindenburg accused Buch of attempting to conceal connections to accounts linked to the Adani group by ensuring they were registered solely in the name of her husband, Dhaval Buch. The short-seller claims that two weeks after Buch was appointed as SEBI Chairperson, she redeemed funds through her husband's name, a move they argue contradicts her disclaimers of control over the accounts. Hindenburg cites private emails allegedly sent by Buch a year into her SEBI tenure, which reportedly confirm these transactions. In a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), Hindenburg demanded that Buch clarify her connections to a consulting firm, Agora Partners, in which she held a stake while serving in office. The

firm is registered in Singapore, and Buch reportedly held 100% interest in it from April 2017 until March 2022, passing the shares to her husband just weeks after becoming SEBI chairperson. Hindenburg's report also alleges that in 2015, Buch and her husband opened an account with a wealth management firm in Singapore to invest in a Mauritius-based offshoot of a Bermuda fund. This fund was reportedly managed by an Adani director, a childhood friend of Dhaval Buch, and was connected to entities used by Adani associates to round-trip funds and manipulate stock prices. In response, Madhabi and Dhaval Buch issued a statement denouncing Hindenburg's allegations as an attack on SEBI's credibility and a personal character assassination. Hindenburg, however, insists that their findings raise critical questions about Buch's financial dealings and her ties to the Adani group.

Public outrage prompts Melbourne e-scooter ban

The Australian city of Melbourne has banned rental electronic scooters with officials saying they posed unacceptable safety risks.

The U-turn by the city’s council comes after it first welcomed the scooters in February 2022, saying they would operate a two-year trial.

However, hundreds of accidents since then have sparked complaints and outrage from the public.

Melbourne's mayor said he was "fed up" with the bad behaviour of some scooter users. “Too many people [are] riding on footpaths. People don’t park them properly. They’re tipped, they’re scattered around the city like confetti, like rubbish, creating tripping hazards,” Nicholas Reece told local radio station 3AW. Melbourne is just the latest city in the world to remove hire scooterswhich can go at up to 26km/h (16mph) - after a brief period of operation.

Nigerian governor WhatsApp number hacked by fraudsters

The governor‘s phone contacts got messages asking them for money

Suspected fraudsters have hacked the WhatsApp number of Umo Eno, the governor of Nigeria’s oil-rich Akwa Ibom state, and asked his contacts for money. Akwa Ibom, in southern Nigeria, is the country’s third-richest state based on its annual gross domestic product of $19bn (£15bn).

The governor, a pastor who founded the All Nations Christian Ministry International, was elected last year. Many of Mr Eno's phone contacts received messages from his WhatsApp number on Tuesday asking them to transfer a specified amount of money to an account and promising reimbursement later.

The governor's chief press secretary, Ekerete Udoh released a statement confirming that the governor's WhatsApp number was "cloned" by criminals attempting to defraud unsuspecting individuals.

Despair as the sea slowly swallows a Kenyan beauty spot

Roberto Macri’s luxury Tana Lodge Hotel, once perched on sand dunes 100 meters from Kenya's Indian Ocean coastline, thrived for nearly two decades in Kipini village. Tourists flocked to enjoy the pristine beaches, but in 2014, the sea began rising. By 2019, the ocean had consumed all nine guest cottages, ending Macri's once-glorious business. Kipini, situated at the mouth of Kenya’s Tana River, is one of several coastal villages facing similar threats. Rising sea levels and strong winds, exacerbated by the depletion of mangrove forests— nature’s defense against erosion—have destabilized the shoreline. Mangrove deforestation, driven by locals seeking hardwood, coupled with the impacts of climate change, has left Kipini vulnerable. Residents, now living in constant fear, report that homes are weakening, wells have turned saline, and farming has suffered due to increased groundwater salinity. The sea has claimed nearly 10 kilometers of land over the past decade, forcing many to relocate. Livelihoods dependent on crabs and prawns have also dwindled as their mangrove habitats disappear.

Elon Musk. The Algerian boxer won gold in Paris, despite being disqualified from last year's World Championships by the International Boxing Association (IBA), after she was reported to have failed gender eligibility tests in 2023. However, the International Olympic Committee strongly defended Khelif's right to compete and ruled her to be eligible.

Her lawyer Nabil Boudi told Variety on Tuesday that Musk and Rowling would be named in the lawsuit, following comments they made on social media. Khelif's participation was widely discussed online, after Italian boxer Angela Carini abandoned her Olympic bout against her after 46 seconds. Paris public prosecutor's office told news agency AFP on Wednesday that they had launched a cyberbullying probe, following a complaint by Khelif.

slams Venezuela repression and lack of transparency

A group of United Nations experts has said that Venezuela's presidential election lacked "basic transparency and integrity".

The UN panel of experts has echoed the criticism levelled by the Carter Center,

whose independent observers said earlier that the election "could not be considered democratic".

Both organisations have criticised Venezuela's National Electoral Council (CNE) for declaring the incumbent, Nicolás Maduro, the winner without publishing detailed voting tallies.

The UN human rights chief had earlier warned of a "climate of fear" caused by arbitrary detentions carried out in the wake of the election.

According to the Venezuelan government, more than 2,400 people have been detained since 29 July - the day the disputed election result was announced.

Climate change is the undeniable driver of these changes, says scientist George Odera. Without urgent intervention, residents fear Kipini could be entirely submerged within three years. Macri, who invested $460,000 in the hotel, has relocated to Malindi but hopes to return and reinvest if the ocean's advance is halted. As it stands, only the manager’s house remains on the rapidly shrinking land.

Yemen flooding leaves at least 57 dead, UN says

Flooding in Yemen has left at least 57 people dead and thousands displaced, the UN has said.

More than 34,000 families were affected by the heavy rains, which began in late June and intensified in early August, according to the UN humanitarian affairs office (OCHA).

It has worsened the country's "already dire humanitarian situation" as millions grapple with the impact of a civil conflict that began nearly 10 years ago, the UN body added.

"The magnitude of this disaster is overwhelming, and the humanitarian needs are enormous," said Matt Huber, the International Organization for Migration (IOM)'s acting chief of mission in Yemen.

Regions affected by the flooding include Hudaydah, Hajjah, Taiz and Marib. Hudaydah is among the hardest hit areas. Flooding there has displaced more than 6,000 families and caused widespread destruction to homes and essential services, according to the UN. Roads were closed and access to affected areas remained challenging, the body added.

Vinesh Phogat's Rival Regrets Betrayal at Paris Olympics

Vinesh Phogat's disqualification from the women's 50kg wrestling final at Paris Olympics 2024 came as a massive heartbreak for Indian sports fans. However, before that, Vinesh's bouts sent India into euphoria. She pulled off the biggest upset at the Paris Games by outwitting hitherto invincible Yui Susaki with a perfectly planned strategy before edging past Ukraine's Oksana Livach to storm into the women's 50kg semifinal. "I had the honour of winning the bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics! First of all, thank you so much for all your support. It has really helped me out! I

Arshad Nadeem

Awarded 10 Crore and Car with 'Olympics' Plate

Arshad Nadeem is currently the most popular Pakistan sportsperson. His exploits at the Paris Olympics 2024 earned his country the first ever individual gold at the quadrennial extravaganza. He threw an Olympic record of 92.97m to end first ahead of India's Neeraj Chopra, who ended with silver with his season best throw of 89.45m. Hailing from the rural area of Khanewal in Punjab, Nadeem had very limited means to train and travel abroad for competitions, with fellow villagers and relatives donating money so that he could compete abroad in his early days. But now, Nadeem has been showered with cash prizes. Pakistan's Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday visited Nadeem in Mian Channu and awarded him Pakistan Rupees 10 crore. He was also gifted a Honda Civic car with a special registration number PAK-92.97 (his Olympic mark).

wanted to see my family, teammates, and fans who have fought with me for the past three years to win the gold medal, but I couldn't do it, and I'm so sorry and

frustrated that I committed a betrayal," Susaki wrote in a note that was shared by United World Wrestling. "Despite the loss, encouraging words from all over the world and worlds that they still believe in me and will continue to support me. I wasn't able to reply, but I read every message, one by one, and I can't measure how much it touched my heart, how much it saved my heart, and how much it made me want to keep moving forward. Thank you so much! As long as there are people who still support me and believe in me, I am strongly willing to keep going hard again to achieve my goal of becoming an Olympic champion."

Protests Won't Impact Paris Olympics: Federation Chief Sanjay Singh

Though Vinesh Phogat still stands a chance at being awarded a silver medal for her performance at the Paris Olympic Games, India's official medal count from wrestling reads just one bronze medal at the moment. Aman Sehrawat, competing in his maiden Olympic Games, bagged a bronze medal from the event, though the general perception of Indian wrestlers' performance in the Paris Games is ordinary. The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief feels the ordinary show is only because of the protests that

wrestlers were involved in.

Top Indian wrestlers like Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, and Sakshi Malik protested for about a year over the allegations made against former wrestling body chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

"If you look at it from the other angle, the protests that took place for 14-15 months disturbed the entire wrestling fraternity. Let alone one category, the wrestlers in other categories struggled as they could not practice without national and international tournaments. Hence, the wrestlers could not perform well," Sanjay Singh told.

"Shocked, Received No Money": Olympian Ashwini Ponnappa on SAI's Rs.1.5 Cr Claim

New Delhi: Indian doubles badminton player and Olympian Ashwini Ponnappa said on Tuesday (August 13) that she received little to no individual financial assistance from the sports ministry in the run up to Paris Olympics.

The doubles star said that even her request for a coach was denied ahead of the tournament, reported Business Standard.

Earlier. the Sports Authority of India (SAI) had released a document, detailing the financial support provided to the Paris-bound Indian athletes.

The SAI document says that Ponnappa was provided Rs 4,50,000 under TOPS and Rs 1,48,04,080 under Annual calendar for Training and Competition (ACTC).

The SAI said that the amount included the procurement of Game Ready recovery equipment, international competitions and sparring partner in the Tokyo cycle. Ponnappa said that she was shocked because despite the claims made by SAI, she didn’t receive the money. “I don’t have a specific coach. As for my personalised trainer, I’m paying for him myself. Saina had found herself in a similar equation with trolls over her Jasprit Bumrah comment earlier. Kolkata Knight Riders batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi had criticised Saina with a Jasprit Bumrah post after the shuttler drew a cricket vs badminton inference. "Why would I face Jasprit Bumrah anyways? If I had been playing for 8 years maybe I would have answered Jasprit Bumrah," Nehwal said in response. "If Jasprit Bumrah plays badminton with me maybe he won't be able to take my smash. Hockey India Retires PR Sreejesh's No. 16 Jersey

Hockey India on Wednesday decided to retire the jersey number of goalkeeping stalwart P R Sreejesh at the senior level after he bid adieu to the game following his starring role in the country's second consecutive Olympic bronze at the just-concluded Paris Games. Hockey India secretary general Bhola Nath Singh said going forward no senior team player will be given the number 16 jersey although it will remain in circulation at the junior level. While lauding the veteran's contribution to the game, Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey said Sreejesh has earned the right to be considered the "God of Modern Indian Hockey".

Singh also formally announced that the affable 36-year-old, who competed for nearly two decades, will take up the role of the junior national coach.

"Sreejesh is now going to be the junior team coach and we are retiring the No. 16 jersey for the senior team. We are not retiring No. 16 for the junior team," said Singh at a felicitation function for the veteran and other members of the team. "Sreejesh dusra Sreejesh ko paida karega in junior team (Sreejesh will groom another Sreejesh in the junior team who will wear the No.16 jersey)," he added.

The players, who were present at the ceremony, wore identical red jerseys with Sreejesh's name on the back as a mark of respect for the Kerala man.

Also in attendance was pistol shooter Manu Bhaker, who became the first Indian athlete post independence to win two Olympic medals with her bronze medals in 10m air pistol and 10m air pistol mixed team (partnering Sarabjot Singh). "It's difficult to put into words how grateful and honoured I feel about this gesture from Hockey India," he said.

"Eighteen years is a long journey. I've experienced all the highs and lows, but it has shaped me into the person I am today. I've enjoyed every minute of my time as an international player, and will deeply miss my teammates, who have become a second family to me," he added.

S Jaishankar's 5-Year Prediction Amid West Asia War Fears, US Election

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has painted a bleak picture of where the world might be in five years, warning of a "very grim forecast" given military tension in West Asia, between Ukraine and Russia, and in Southeast Asia, as well as economic challenges and the spectre of climate change.

The possibility of such a future "makes the case" for a stronger relationship between India and the United States, Mr Jaishankar said as much, if not all, of the world waits on the outcome of November's US presidential election many believe will be the second coming of Donald Trump.

"I am an optimistic person and generally tend to think of solutions to problems rather than the problems that come out of solutions. But I would say, with a great deal of sobriety, that we are going through an exceptionally difficult period," Mr Jaishankar said Tuesday at an event in Delhi.

Los Angeles based Vivek Tandon, Founder & CEO, EB5 BRICS, an immigration firm in the US specializing in helping foreign investors across the world get the green card and US citizenship talks to Hi India about everything you may need to know about the EB-5 visa.

In the recent years, India has become one of the fastest growing markets for the EB-5 applicants who are looking to migrating to the United States. The move to US for most Indians is often governed by a desire for better educational, business and career opportunities for themselves, their families and primarily their children.

Indian Americans are the most educated population in the United States. As per a report by the Pew Research Center. Indian Americans also have the highest income levels, earning $65,000 per year with a median household income of $88,000, far higher than the United States household average of 49,000 EB-5 experts say, if wealthy parents’ “gift” their children EB-5 funds prior to sending them to college, not only would they pay lower tuition fees as U.S. residents, but the post-graduation visa concerns would be eliminated.

The EB-5 U.S. Immigrant Investor Visa Program is available to India citizens. There is growing demand for this among Indian citizens from Chandigarh, Punjab, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and many other cities and states in India. Here, Vivek Tandon, a lawyer and an investment banker, who helps in educating investors in India and Dubai about EB-5 Visa Program answers some commonly asked questions pertaining the EB-5 Visa Hi India: Recently the EB-5 Program expanded its scope to include more diverse economic sectors. What would this really mean?

Vivek Tandon: The EB-5 Reform and Integrity Act of 2022 was a landmark legislation that revived the EB-5 Regional Center program and settled the confusion and uncertainty around the minimum investment requirement. Another significant change that the law introduced was the

for granted... but many have not come out of it," Mr Jaishankar said.

The reference to tension in the Middle East, or West Asia, was underlined Monday by the United States and its European allies calling on Iran to "stand down" as fears mount of yet another a full-scale war.

This follows Israel's attack on the Gaza. Iran and its Lebanese ally, Hezbollah, have vowed revenge for the killing of the Hamas' political leader and a Hezbollah commander. India - caught in a tight spot between two friendly nations - has advised both sides to exercise restraint and resolved all issues with "dialogue and diplomacy", Mr Jaishankar's office said in April. In today's comments Mr Jaishankar built on the threats posed by military conflict to the world and warned this would spill over into economic challenges, such as rising fuel and fertiliser prices precipitated last year by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Hi India: What is the Diversification Advantage for EB-5 Investors?

Vivek Tandon: To qualify for the EB-5 visa, an investor must make an at-risk investment of $800,000 in a commercial enterprise and create ten full-time jobs in the US. While it is possible to qualify for permanent residence even if the investment fails, every EB-5 investor would want the green card and recover the $800,000 investment. Choosing a project that will create the ten jobs and repay the investment through sale or refinancing in four to six years can be a very complex decision. The ability to choose from a diverse range of projects operating in different sectors in different parts of the US can help EB-5 investors mitigate risk and improve the chances of recovery of the investments.

Hi India: How do rural investment offer advantages for E-B5 investors from India?

Vivek Tandon: The option of investing in rural projects has been a part of the EB-5 program since its inception. However, until recently, a significant majority of EB-5 projects were concentrated in Targeted Employment Areas or urban areas with 150% unemployment compared to the national unemployment rate. Investors had very few rural projects to choose from as most EB-5 projects were concentrated in the urban real estate sector. Developers preferred such projects because it was easier to create the required number of jobs. However, investors had to bear the increased risk of concentration of EB-5 investments into a narrow pool of assets. The set aside of 20% of the annual quota of 10,000 EB-5 visas to rural projects has resulted in a sharp rise in interest among

"What was happening in the Red Sea (and) climate events... are no longer just news... they have globally disruptive consequences and sometimes entire regions are basically made dysfunctional."

"This makes the case for India-US ties... not just about treaties (but) much more..." he said. However, Mr Jaishankar refused to get drawn into a discussion on the US election. EB-5 investors, Regional Centers, and project developers alike.

Rural investments further offer the additional advantages of priority processing and the absence of backlog for EB-5 investors from China and India.

Has this also opened up diversified options for investors?

The focus on rural areas have led to the focus shifting beyond real estate and construction projects. Not all EB-5 project ideas designed for execution in an urban area may make business sense in a rural area.

This has prompted Regional Centers to explore projects in manufacturing, mining, renewable energy, and other sectors. In the past, developers cited a lack of investor interest as the reason for avoiding unconventional EB-5 project ideas while investors complained about the absence of diversified options beyond urban real estate projects. The set asides have effectively broken this vicious cycle and both developers and investors are exploring rural-centric business plans and projects.

The rise of diversified options in rural areas can help investors mitigate the risk of the adverse sectoral impact of a recession or an economic slowdown, Earlier, EB-5 investors had very little protection from any economic, technological, regulatory, or even geopolitical risk hurting the real estate or construction industry.

Now, an investor seeking to safeguard his or her EB-5 investment from such risks has the option of exploring rural projects operating in a completely different sector.

Rape and murder of doctor in hospital spark protests in India

Early on Friday morning, a 31-year-old female trainee doctor retired to sleep in a seminar hall after a gruelling day at one of India’s oldest hospitals. It was the last time she was seen alive. The next morning, her colleagues discovered her half-naked body on the podium, bearing extensive injuries. Police later arrested a hospital volunteer worker in connection with what they say is a case of rape and murder at Kolkata’s 138-year-old RG Kar Medical College. Tens of thousands of women in Kolkata and across West Bengal state are expected to participate in a 'Reclaim the Night' march at midnight on Wednesday, demanding the "independence to live in freedom and without fear".

The march takes place just before India's Independence Day on Thursday. Outraged doctors have struck work both in the city and across India, demanding a strict federal law to protect them.

The tragic incident has again cast a spotlight on the violence against doctors and nurses in the country. Reports of doctors, regardless of gender, being assaulted by patients and their relatives have gained widespread attention. Women - who make up nearly 30% of India’s doctors and 80% of the nursing staff - are more vulnerable than their male colleagues.

The crime in the Kolkata hospital last week exposed the alarming security risks faced by the medical staff in many of India's state-run health facilities. At RG Kar Hospital, which sees over 3,500 patients daily, the overworked trainee doctors - some working up to

India lacks a stringent federal law to protect healthcare workers. Although 25 states have some laws to prevent violence against them, convictions are “almost nonexistent”, RV Asokan, president of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), an organisation of doctors, told me. A 2015 survey by IMA found that 75% of doctors in India have faced some form of violence at work. “Security in hospitals is almost absent,” he says. “One reason is that nobody thinks of hospitals as conflict zones.”

Dr Nandi’s own journey highlights how female doctors in India's government hospitals have become resigned to working in conditions that compromise

36 hours straight - had no designated rest rooms, forcing them to seek rest in a third-floor seminar room.

Reports indicate that the arrested suspect, a volunteer worker with a troubled past, had unrestricted access to the ward and was captured on CCTV. Police allege that no background checks were conducted on the volunteer.

"The hospital has always been our first home; we only go home to rest. We never imagined it could be this unsafe. Now, after this incident, we're terrified," says Madhuparna Nandi, a junior doctor at Kolkata’s 76-year-old National Medical College.

their security.

At her hospital, where she is a resident in gynaecology and obstetrics, there are no designated rest rooms and separate toilets for female doctors.

“I use the patients’ or the nurses' toilets if they allow me. When I work late, I sometimes sleep in an empty patient bed in the ward or in a cramped waiting room with a bed and basin,” Dr Nandi told me.

She says she feels insecure even in the room where she rests after 24-hour shifts that start with outpatient duty and continue through ward rounds and maternity rooms.

One night in 2021, during the peak of

the Covid pandemic, some men barged into her room and woke her by touching her, demanding, “Get up, get up. See our patient.”

“I was completely shaken by the incident. But we never imagined it would come to a point where a doctor could be raped and murdered in the hospital,” Dr Nandi says.

What happened on Friday was not an isolated incident. The most shocking case remains that of Aruna Shanbaug, a nurse at a prominent Mumbai hospital, who was left in a persistent vegetative state after being raped and strangled by a ward attendant in 1973. She died in 2015, after 42 years of severe brain damage and paralysis. More recently, in Kerala, Vandana Das, a 23-year-old medical intern, was fatally stabbed with surgical scissors by a drunken patient last year.

In overcrowded government hospitals with unrestricted access, doctors often face mob fury from patients' relatives after a death or over demands for immediate treatment. Kamna Kakkar, an anaesthetist, remembers a harrowing incident during a night shift in an intensive care unit (ICU) during the pandemic in 2021 at her hospital in Haryana in northern India.

“I was the lone doctor in the ICU when three men, flaunting a politician’s name, forced their way in, demanding a much in-demand controlled drug. I gave in to protect myself, knowing the safety of my patients was at stake," Dr Kakkar told me.

Namrata Mitra, a Kolkata-based

pathologist who studied at the RG Kar Medical College, says her doctor father would often accompany her to work because she felt unsafe.

“During my on-call duty, I took my father with me. Everyone laughed, but I had to sleep in a room tucked away in a long, dark corridor with a locked iron gate that only the nurse could open if a patient arrived,” Dr Mitra wrote in a Facebook post over the weekend.

“I’m not ashamed to admit I was scared. What if someone from the ward - an attendant, or even a patient - tried something? I took advantage of the fact that my father was a doctor, but not everyone has that privilege.”

When she was working in a public health centre in a district in West Bengal, Dr Mitra spent nights in a dilapidated one-storey building that served as the doctor’s hostel.

“From dusk, a group of boys would gather around the house, making lewd comments as we went in and out for emergencies. They would ask us to check their blood pressure as an excuse to touch us and they would peek through the broken bathroom windows,” she wrote.

Years later, during an emergency shift at a government hospital, “a group of drunk men passed by me, creating a ruckus, and one of them even groped me”, Dr Mitra said. “When I tried to complain, I found the police officers dozing off with their guns in hand.”

Things have worsened over the years, says Saraswati Datta Bodhak, a pharmacologist at a government hospital in West Bengal's Bankura district. "Both my daughters are young doctors and they tell me that hospital campuses in the state are overrun by anti-social elements, drunks and touts," she says. Dr Bodhak recalls seeing a man with a gun roaming around a top government hospital in Kolkata during a visit.

India lacks a stringent federal law to protect healthcare workers. Although 25 states have some laws to prevent violence against them, convictions are “almost non-existent”, RV Asokan, president of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), an organisation of doctors, told me. A 2015 survey by IMA found that 75% of doctors in India have faced some form of violence at work. “Security in hospitals is almost absent,” he says. “One reason is that nobody thinks of hospitals as conflict zones.”

Some states like Haryana have deployed private bouncers to strengthen security at government hospitals. In 2022, the federal government asked the states to deploy trained security forces for sensitive hospitals, install CCTV cameras, set up quick reaction teams, restrict entry to "undesirable individuals" and file complaints against offenders. Nothing much has happened, clearly. Even the protesting doctors don't seem to be very hopeful. “Nothing will change... The expectation will be that doctors should work round the clock and endure abuse as a norm,” says Dr Mitra. It is a disheartening thought.

"Mukesh Bhatt Refused to Cast Me as Hero; Mahesh Bhatt Scrapped the Film"

Deepak Tijori

Following his popularity after Aashiqui and Sadak, Deepak came close to playing a lead role in an emotional film titled Adhure Log, which was supposed to be helmed by Mahesh Bhatt. The film would have seen Deepak play an usher who guides the audience to their seats once they are in the auditorium. In the ‘90s, the multiplex culture wasn’t prevalent, so theatergoers had ushers guiding them to their seats with torches in their hands. Bhatt had the story about an usher in his mind for a while and saw that character in Deepak. “To my excitement, I was finally feeling the taste of playing a lead role in a film directed by my dream director, Mahesh Bhatt. I was walking two feet above the ground, as Bhatt saab also did a photo shoot with me in an empty cinema hall. Seeing those pictures, he was even more convinced that I would be the right choice, the only choice, to play that character. I can say that convincingly now, as he never replaced me with anyone else to play that role but scrapped the whole film,”

Industry, Constants Are Crucial Amidst the Temporary" - Kirti Sanon

National Award-winning actor Kriti Sanon recently shared her thoughts on what the right partner can bring to her life. She also opened up about the importance of building meaningful relationships in life.

Amid rumours that she is dating UK-based entrepreneur

Kabir Bahia, National Awardwinning actor Kriti Sanon recently commented on the importance of building meaningful relationships in life, particularly for those who work in the film industry where connections are fleeting. Sanon also shared her thoughts on what the right partner can bring to her life. “You want people who contribute positively to your life. You thrive in their presence because they motivate and inspire you to improve. They support you during your lowest moments. You desire a partner who will be there for you when you return home, sharing both happy and sad moments. Even if you achieve great success in life, without someone to share it with, it feels meaningless,” she said during a recent chat with Filmfare.

She added, “In this industry, loneliness can be intense because you have very few consistent relationships. You go from one film set to another, forming bonds that feel like family. You eat, drink and spend entire days with these people. But after three months, they’re gone. Then it’s on to the next film and another family. Everything feels temporary, so having constants in your life becomes crucial.”

The Crew actor also admitted that she’s a big romantic at heart and truly believe in love. “It’s something that grounds you and makes you feel whole,” she said. When

“Love should inspire growth and personal evolution, encouraging you to become the best version of yourself. It should add to your happiness rather than solely being responsible for it — you should already have happiness within yourself. Maintaining your individuality while feeling like the best version of yourself defines what love means to me,” the 34-year-old thespian added.

Kriti Sanon, who made her acting debut with the Mahesh Babu-starrer Telugu film 1: Nenokkadine and won the National Film Award for Best Actress for her role in Mimi, is currently preparing for the release of Do Patti. Also starring Kajol in her first role as a cop, Do Patti marks Sanon’s debut in the thriller genre. Bangladesh Power Shift Spurs Terrorist Activity; India Attack Feared

Bangladesh Crisis: The ongoing political turmoil in Bangladesh is having an impact on India. On one hand, challenges at the borders have increased, and on the other, the risk of terrorist organizations becoming active after these events has also grown. It is said that students are protesting against the Sheikh Hasina government in Bangladesh, but all intelligence reports indicate that terrorist organizations played an active role in this violence. Reports have now emerged that these terrorist groups are collaborating with Pakistan's terrorist organizations to plot an attack on India. According to reports, Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) has partnered with Bangladesh's Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) to carry out terrorist attacks in India's northeastern states. Intelligence suggests that

Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) played a significant role in the political turmoil in Bangladesh. Other terrorist groups, including Jamaate-Islami and ABT, supported this effort to spread violence in Bangladesh.

The Ansarullah Bangla Team is a Bangladeshi terrorist organization. It was initially formed in 2007 under the name Jamaat-ul-Muslimeen, but due to a lack of funds, the organization was disbanded. It was re-established in 2013 as the Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT).

Susan Wojcicki dies at 56-years-old

Susan Wojcicki

Behind YouTube’s quest to make stars out of small creators around the world was Susan Wojcicki, the CEO of the platform from 2014 till she stepped down in February 2023. She lost her battle with cancer at age 56. Among the most prominent women in Silicon Valley, her name will forever be associated with Google. When Larry Page and Sergey Brin decided to form Google, they rented space at Wojcicki’s garage for $1,700 a month in 1998 (the company moved to an actual office space in Palo Alto, California in 1999). Back then she was working in the marketing department at Intel and had mortgages to pay.

The following year, Wojcicki became Google’s 16th employee, working as its first marketing manager. The connection between Wojcicki and Sergey Brin was extended when he married her sister, Anne, in 2007 (they divorced in 2015).

Adani Group, SEBI Chief, Industry Leaders Slam "Discredited" Hindenburg

"For a discredited short-seller under the scanner for several violations of Indian securities laws, Hindenburg's allegations are no more than red herrings thrown by a desperate entity with total contempt for Indian laws," the Adani Group said

The Adani Group has strongly refuted the latest allegations by Hindenburg Research, dismissing them as "malicious, mischievous, and manipulative selections of publicly available information" intended to arrive at "predetermined conclusions for personal profiteering." In a stock exchange filing, Adani rejected the claims as recycled and baseless, noting that the Supreme Court had already dismissed them in January 2024.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) Chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch and her husband Dhaval Buch also denied the allegations by Hindenburg, calling it a "character assassination attempt" in response to recent enforcement actions taken by

SEBI against the US-based short seller. SEBI had earlier issued a show-cause notice to Hindenburg for violating Indian securities regulations.

The Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) supported SEBI's chief, warning that Hindenburg's actions could create a trust deficit in India's market ecosystem and undermine the country's economic progress. AMFI

"Grave Concern": Bangladesh On Attacks On Religious Minorities

Dhaka, Bangladesh: Bangladesh's new interim government said Sunday it was working to resolve attacks on Hindus and other religious minorities reported after the dramatic ouster of autocratic premier Sheikh Hasina. Hindus are the largest minority faith in mostly Muslim Bangladesh and are considered a steadfast support base for

Hasina's party, the Awami League. After Hasina's abrupt resignation and flight abroad on Monday brought an end to her 15 years of autocratic rule, there were numerous reports of attacks against Hindu households, temples and businesses. "The attacks on religious minorities in some places have been noted with grave concern," the interim cabinet said in its first official statement since its Thursday appointment. The cabinet said it would "immediately sit with the representative bodies and other concerned groups to find ways to resolve such heinous attacks".

Sunday's statement from the self-styled "council of advisors" tasked with steering democratic reforms in the South Asian nation of 170 million people listed numerous urgent priorities.

Vinesh Phogat Explains Weight Gain at Paris Olympics to Court

India awaits the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) verdict on wrestler Vinesh Phogat's appeal regarding her disqualification and the joint silver medal plea at the Paris Olympics. Vinesh was disqualified before her final bout in the Women's Freestyle 50kg wrestling event after weighing in 100 grams over the 50kg limit. According to the Indian Express, Phogat’s counsel argued before CAS that the tight schedule between her bouts and the significant distance between the Athletes' Village and the competition arena contributed to her failure to meet the weight requirement. They highlighted that Vinesh's weight

had reached 52.7 kg after the first day of competition, leaving her insufficient time to shed the excess weight before the final weigh-in.

The counsel further argued that the extra 100 grams provided no competitive advantage to Vinesh, emphasizing that the weight discrepancy was negligible—about 0.1 to 0.2 percent of her total body weight. They suggested that this could have been due to natural bloating from the summer heat, increased muscle mass from the day's competitions, or food consumption necessary for her health and performance.

The principle of proportionality was also invoked, arguing that the minor weight excess, which did not involve fraud or manipulation, should not result in severe consequences like disqualification from the final and the loss of a silver medal.

Vinesh's counsel emphasized the importance of prioritizing the athlete's health over strict regulatory enforcement. The decision from CAS is eagerly awaited across India.

emphasized that the allegations lacked context and understanding of the Indian regulatory environment.

The Buchs clarified that the investment referred to by Hindenburg was made in 2015, before Madhabi Buch joined SEBI. The investment decision was based on the credentials of Anil Ahuja, a longtime friend and experienced investor, and was redeemed in 2018 when Ahuja left his position as Chief Investment Officer of the fund.

Legal and political figures, including Senior lawyer Mahesh Jethmalani and former union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar, have dismissed Hindenburg's claims as baseless and an attempt to destabilize India's markets

Centre Forms Panel To Ensure Safety Of Indians, Minorities In Bangladesh

New Delhi: The centre has formed a committee to monitor the situation in Bangladesh amid reports of targeted violence against minorities. The committee will also ensure the safety of Indians and other minorities in the country amid deadly protests that saw the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government. "The Government of India has constituted a Committee to monitor the current situation on Indo-Bangladesh Border (IBB). The committee will maintain communication channels with their counterpart authorities in Bangladesh to ensure safety of

Indian citizens and people belonging to minority communities in Bangladesh," the government said.

On Thursday, Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus was sworn into office as Bangladesh's interim leader, vowing to guide the country back to democracy after a student-led uprising ended the 15-year rule of Sheikh Hasina. Mr Yunus, who returned to Dhaka from Europe, called for the restoration of order in the South Asian nation after weeks of violence that left at least 455 people dead, calling on citizens to guard each other, including minorities who came under attack. "Law and order is our first task... We cannot take a step forward unless we fix the law and order situation," he said.

Mr Sisodia said, after which he left for Mr Kejriwal's residence in Delhi's Civil Lines area. Mr Sisodia was given bail on his eighth appeal. He was, though, allowed to visit his ailing wife last year. Like himself, the Chief Minister was arrested, in March, by both federal agencies in the liquor policy case. Mr Kejriwal has received bail in the case filed by the Enforcement Directorate but not the CBI.

Russia Struggles Against Ukraine's Kursk Incursion

Russia's military has said it is "continuing to repel" a Ukrainian cross-border incursion into the western Kursk region - a surprise attack now in its fourth day. The Russian defence ministry said Ukraine lost more than 280 military personnel in the past 24 hours - a claim that has not been independently verified. Reports suggest that Ukrainian troops are operating more than 10km (six miles) inside Russia - the deepest cross-border advance by Kyiv since Moscow launched a full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Ukraine has not openly admitted the incursion, but President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Thursday that Moscow must "feel" the consequences for its invasion.

Indian-Origin Man Wrongly Jailed For 38 Years For Murders Dies In US Prison

HiIndia Newsdesk

Washington: Kris Maharaj, a British citizen of Indian origin, has died in a US prison hospital after spending 38 years behind bars for a crime he never committed. He was 85.

Mr Maharaj was wrongly convicted in 1986 for the murders of Derrick and Duane Moo Young. His death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment in 2002. He was declared innocent in 2019, but remained imprisoned due to a US Court of Appeals ruling that the evidence of his innocence was not sufficient for his release.

Marita Maharaj, his wife, expressed profound sadness over his death, saying, "I promised Kris in 1976 that we would

Before his arrest, Kris Maharaj lived a life of luxury in England

be together until death do us part, and I am devastated that he died alone in that horrible place," as per Sky News. She plans to bring his body to the UK for burial. "The last place he would want to be is where he was falsely charged with murder," she said, and vowed to continue fighting to clear his name so she could "meet him in heaven with a

clear conscience that I have done my best for him."

Clive Stafford Smith, Mr Maharaj's probono attorney, confirmed his death and promised to continue the fight to clear his name, stating, "We will certainly fulfil her wish and his, that is to continue to exonerate him for this crime that he patently did not commit."

The prosecution's key witness changed their testimony multiple times. Posttrial evidence suggested that the Moo Youngs might have been involved in money laundering and had links to drug traffickers, suggesting the murders might have been orchestrated by Pablo Escobar's Medellin Cartel, not Kris Maharaj.

‘The

longer the ingredient list of the food you eat… shorter your life span’

Considering our overconsumption of processed foods, it is no surprise that experts urge caution whenever we are at the supermarket buying groceries for the week ahead.

To help make a healthy start, pharmacist Dr James DiNicolantonio suggests going by the thumb rule of purchasing products with shorter ingredient lists. His logic: “The longer the shelf life of the food you eat, the shorter your life span. The longer the ingredient list of the food you eat, the longer your medication list.”

To comprehend this better, we reached out to some experts. what's on your plate? What’s on your plate? (Source: Getty Images/ Thinkstock)

Dt. Vanshika Bhardwaj, senior dietician, Marengo Asia Hospitals, Gurugram said food products with a shorter ingredient list are usually preferable because they tend to be less processed and have less artificial additions, preservatives, and chemicals. “Foods with shorter ingredient lists are more likely to be made of whole, organic ingredients, which means they have fewer empty calories and more nutrients,” said Dt Bhardwaj.

Due to their simplicity, the products are easier to understand and you may choose what you’re consuming with more knowledge. “Furthermore, fewer chemicals mean fewer hazards to health from potentially dangerous substances that can aggravate allergies, trigger intolerances, or worsen chronic illnesses,” she added.

Foods that are natural or little processed are also easier for the body to digest, which helps to maintain better digestive health in general. “Less ingredient-heavy manufacturers are typically more open about what goes into their goods, which promotes consumer confidence in the food’s safety and quality,” said Dt Bhardwaj.

Functional nutritionist Mugdha Pradhan, CEO and Founder of iThrive, a Pune-based health and wellness platform, agreed and elaborated with examples.

“Incorporating a shorter ingredient

list is the best practice one can do to benefit their health. For instance, let’s look at a steak that only has minimal salt and meat, or a fresh fruit that is healthiest in its natural state. However, the moment you add more ingredients, like extra salt, sugar preservatives and seed oils, the food loses its nutritional value even though it uplifts its taste factor. So, I do believe that using few ingredients would keep the food healthy and provide you with the utmost nutrition,” said Mugdha.

Eating higher levels of ultraprocessed food may shorten lifespans by more than 10%, according to a new, unpublished study of over 500,000 people whom researchers followed for nearly three decades.

The risk went up to 15% for men and 14% for women once the data was adjusted, said study lead author Erikka Loftfield, an investigator at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland.

Asked about their consumption of 124 foods, people in the top 90th percentile of ultraprocessed food consumption said overly processed drinks topped their list.

“Diet soft drinks were the key contributor to ultraprocessed food consumption. The second one was sugary soft drinks,” Loftfield said. “Beverages are a very important component of the diet and the contribution to ultraprocessed food.”

Refined grains such as ultraprocessed breads and baked goods ranked next in popularity, the study found.

“This is one more large, longduration cohort study confirming the association between UPF (ultraprocessed food) intake and allcause mortality, particularly from cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes,” said Carlos Monteiro, emeritus professor of nutrition and public health at Brazil’s University of São Paulo, in an email.

Monteiro coined the term ultraprocessed food and created the NOVA food classification system, which looks beyond nutrients to how foods are made.

Sleep Like an Olympian

The almost superhuman feats of Olympic athletes are the result of years of meticulous training and preparation. But one aspect is often overlooked –how they sleep. Few actually manage to get the kip they need.

On the day of his flight to the summer Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021, Irish artistic gymnast Rhys McClenaghan woke up at 4.30am to fit in a training session, hoping to tire himself out. In a bid to defeat jet lag, he planned to sleep for just the first half of the 16-hour flight, hoping his body clock would slot into the new time zone – eight hours ahead of Dublin – when he landed.

"My coach says he should be able to wake me up in the middle of the night and I should be able to do a routine straight away," McClenaghan said in a video he posted on YouTube at the time. It seems being prepared to perform at any moment, even with an insufficient amount of sleep, is just part of the groundwork needed ahead of the historic sporting competition.

Most Olympic athletes undergo years, if not decades, of punishing exercise and conditioning regimes as they get ready to compete at the height of their sport.

Yet sleep is a crucial and often overlooked part of how someone performs in at the Games. It is well-known that sleep is essential for the brain and the body. Not getting enough of it can contribute to poor mental and physical health. And while we all feel the consequences of a bad night's sleep, in the world of elite sport – where shaving fractions of a second off a time or making micrometres of adjustment can mean the difference between winning or losing – it can make a world of difference. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, for example, a 1% improvement would have meant a gold medal for the competitor who came fourth place in the women's 400m swim, 400m track race and the women's road race. It would also have clinched the fourth-place sprinter in the men's 100m a silver medal.

Certainly, much of the scientific research points at how poor sleep and sleep deprivation can have a harmful effect on athletic performance. Many elite athletes work sleep into their training schedules as an essential part of their preparation for competitions. US Olympic gold medalwinning sprinter Gabby Thomas, for example, has

described how prioritising sleep has helped her to become one of the best runners in the world. The British Cycling team even went as far as taking their own pillows and mattresses to the Beijing Olympics in 2008 so their athletes could sleep in the same position every night to help give them the "marginal gains" that saw the team win seven out of 10 gold medals available in track cycling. According to one study by researchers at Stanford University, extending sleep by spending at least 10 hours in bed per night improved sprint times, shooting accuracy and decreased fatigue among college basketball players. The researchers say sleep and rest was as important as training and diet.

Other studies have shown that elite athletes who have their sleep restricted to four hours per night for three nights suffer a decrease in joint coordination and aren't able to jump as high as they could with more than seven hours of sleep a night. For ultramarathon runners, the time spent asleep the nights before a competition accounted for around a third of the variation in performance among ultra-endurance triathlon competitors.

"If you talk about a pyramid, it's [sleep] the base, or the foundation of a building," says Matthew Crawley, assistant strength and conditioning coach and sport scientist for the Dallas Stars, and adjunct professor at Canisius University, in Buffalo, New York. "It's fascinating – when the body is recovering during sleep, the human growth hormone is released, and emotions are regulated... These are all complex physiological processes in the body that are overlooked."

For world-class athletes, sleep allows for better concentration, a better mental state during competitions, as well as improving recovery and consequently reducing the risk of injury. However, Olympic athletes frequently get less than the recommended eight hours of sleep a night, especially the night before a competition. Studies reporting global sleep quality show that 50-78% of elite athletes experience sleep disturbance and 2226% suffer with highly disturbed sleep. This may be due a variety of reasons – from early morning and late evening training sessions, unfamiliar sleeping

environments, travelling between time zones and psychological stress due to performance pressures. How can athletes achieve a healthy sleep routine? New research is showing that sleep hygiene routines are an effective way for athletes to regulate their sleep, and to ensure that they make sleep a top priority. However, it takes commitment – for example, waking up at the same time each day, establishing a bed-time routine, limiting caffeine and avoiding blue light from electronic devices. McClenaghan, for example, wears red-lens glasses to block out blue light while travelling. (Intriguingly, while blue light exposure before bed can affect sleep quality, at other times it can improve reaction time and alertness, which could be beneficial in some sports.)

"Understanding their upcoming schedule is important – what does the training week look like? When is the competition?" says Crawley. "Could they go to bed a little sooner, or focus on getting sunlight in the morning before travelling?" Sunlight in the morning helps to regulate or circadian rhythm, by boosting our serotonin levels and in turn suppressing melatonin (a naturally occurring hormone which rises at night to help control how and when you sleep).

A new concept of "banking sleep" (sleeping for longer the night before a night of deprived or disrupted sleep) has also been suggested to improve athletic performance. Napping is also been shown to bring positive effects to sports performance – a quick 30 or 90 minutes of shuteye has been shown to boost alertness and reduce sports-related fatigue. Though it may not be the most helpful for those who struggle to fall asleep, napping can be used to supplement a night of bad sleep, or to combat "daytime sleepiness". In fact, Team GB invested in sleep pods for the Paris 2024 Games to help optimise the quantity and quality of sleep for athletes in a high-pressure and unfamiliar environment.

I guess my days of scrolling on my phone before bedtime are over, because if moaning about how badly I slept the night before was an Olympic sport, I'd definitely have a gold medal.

With the blessings and guidance of His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj, the Akshar-Purushottam Darshan—a classical philosophical school of thought and practice of the Swaminarayan Sampradaya—was presented and warmly received at the 25th World Congress of Philosophy in Rome, Italy.

The eight-day conference took place from August 1 to 8, 2024, at the historic Sapienza University of Rome, one of the oldest universities in the world and the largest in Europe. The event attracted over 5,000 scholars and students of philosophy from more than 120 countries, representing diverse disciplines and backgrounds. This prestigious academic gathering, organized by the International Federation of Philosophical Societies (FISP), served as a platform for some of the world’s brightest minds to engage in profound discussions and rigorous exchanges of ideas. Participants explored contemporary global challenges and sought a deeper understanding of human existence through 89 philosophical sub-disciplines.

On August 2, 2024, the Congress hosted a significant session focusing on spiritual ecology and Akshar-Purushottam Darshan. Chaired by Mahamahopadhyaya Bhadreshdas Swami, the session aimed to reexamine our underlying attitudes and beliefs about the environment through the lens of religious philosophy, particularly Akshar-Purushottam Darshan.

Scholars from the UK, USA, and India presented research on how the philosophical exploration of Akshar-Purushottam Darshan manifests in practical expressions of devotion, ethical living, and service to humanity and the natural world. Professor Balaganapathi Devarakonda, a Philosophy professor at Delhi University, remarked, “I was delighted to see Akshar-Purushottam Darshan so enthusiastically received

New Villivalam Legislation Broadens In-State Tuition Access for Students

SPRINGFIELD, IL – State Senator Ram Villivalam has successfully championed a new law in Illinois that expands access to in-state tuition for more students, particularly benefiting immigrant residents. The law, which was signed by the governor and will take effect on July 1, 2026, introduces two pathways for students to qualify for in-state tuition. The first pathway allows Illinois residents who graduate from an Illinois high school or attend one for at least two years before college enrollment to qualify. The second pathway is for students who have spent at least three years attending an Illinois high school, community college, or a combination of both before enrolling

Abbott Directs Texas Hospitals to Report Patients' Immigration Status

TEXAS- Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued an executive order on Thursday requiring hospitals to inquire about patients’ immigration status to determine the costs of treating those living in the U.S. illegally. Starting November 1, Texas hospitals enrolled in Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program will need to collect data on inpatient discharges, emergency visits, and associated costs for undocumented immigrants. Abbott justified the order by citing the financial burden on Texas due to high levels of illegal immigration, which he attributed to federal border policies under President Biden and Vice President Harris.

Abbott emphasized that this data collection would not impact patient care, as federal law mandates emergency treatment regardless of immigration status. However, the order has sparked criticism, with immigration rights advocates warning that it could deter immigrants from seeking medical care. Texas Democratic Rep. Sylvia Garcia condemned the move, accusing Abbott of attempting to turn healthcare providers into immigration enforcers. This action is part of a broader effort by Republican-led states to impose stricter immigration measures, with Texas at the forefront of legal and political challenges to federal immigration policies.

at a university. Eligible students must also have graduated from high school and either earned an associate degree or completed 60 credit hours of transferable coursework. Non-citizens must file for permanent

residency at the earliest opportunity. The law aims to make higher education more accessible and affordable for Illinois’ immigrant community, which has been praised for contributing significantly to the state’s economy.

New License Plates Support Illinois 100 Club, Villivalam, Kelly Law

SPRINGFIELD, IL — Illinois residents will soon have a new license plate option supporting the 100 Club of Illinois, thanks to a measure sponsored by State Senator Ram Villivalam. The new law, set to take effect on January 1, 2025, allows for a portion of registration and renewal fees to be directed to the 100 Club, which provides financial

assistance and mental health resources to the families of first responders killed in the line of duty.

Under the new law, registration fees for the special plates will be $45, with $30 allocated to the 100 Club. Renewal fees will be $27, with $25 going to the organization.

State Representative Michael Kelly, a Chicago firefighter, emphasized the importance of supporting families of fallen first responders, praising the 100 Club’s mission. He expressed pride in helping fund grants for the organization through these new license plates, which also aim to raise awareness of their work.

The bill, House Bill 5288, was signed by the governor and marks a significant step in providing ongoing support to the families of those who serve and protect Illinois communities.

SPRINGFIELD, IL – A new law sponsored by State Senator Ram Villivalam aims to protect the confidentiality of train crew members involved in fatal accidents.

“We often see personal information released in reports, although it is not needed for accountability or investigative purposes,” said Villivalam (D-Chicago). “This law ensures worker information is not disclosed when it is unnecessary, safeguarding their safety.”

FIACONA Raises Concerns Over Anti-Muslim Float in NYC Parade

FIACONA has responded by launching an Open Letter, signed by over 300 clergy and lay leaders from various denominations, condemning religious persecution in India and the rise of Hindu supremacist nationalism in the U.S. The organization drew parallels between the persecution they have faced and the situation of Muslims in India, emphasizing their duty to speak out. FIACONA also expressed solidarity with Indigenous peoples, linking the destruction of sacred sites in the U.S. to similar acts in India. They warned that remaining silent on these issues would make Christians complicit in the injustices faced by Muslims in India.

NJ Imposes New Penalties for Threatening Immigrant Workers

Illinois ranks third in the nation for railroad collisions, with a 2022 report from the Illinois Commerce Commission highlighting that 30 people died at highway-rail crossing collisions that year.

To protect crew members’ private information, Villivalam’s law mandates that personally identifying information in railroad fatality reports, as well as communications between police officers and crew members, be redacted before being made public.

Unredacted copies will still be accessible to the railroad company, law enforcement, and by court order.

“As labor and industry stakeholders came together, it became clear that there was a significant need to protect the confidentiality of train crew members,” Villivalam stated.

“This law ensures that crew members do not have to fear potential retaliation, while maintaining transparency and accountability in reports when such incidents occur.”

House Bill 5189 was signed into law on Friday and will take effect on January 1, 2025.

NEW JERSEY – New Jersey has enacted a new law aimed at protecting immigrant workers from employer retaliation. Signed by Lt. Gov. Tahesha Way, the law imposes penalties on employers who threaten to disclose an employee’s immigration status to conceal labor violations. The legislation, A-4081/S-2869, seeks to deter exploitation and encourage workers to report workplace abuses without fear of immigration status being used against them.

Penalties for employers range from $1,000 to $10,000 depending on the frequency of violations. Supporters, including state legislators and advocacy groups, praise the law for safeguarding workers’ rights and holding exploitative employers accountable. The law is seen as a vital step in ensuring a fair and safe work environment for all employees, regardless of immigration status. New Jersey’s diverse workforce, particularly immigrant workers, plays a crucial role in the state’s economy, contributing significantly to state and local taxes. The new law, effective immediately, underscores the state’s commitment to protecting its workforce from harassment and intimidation, reinforcing the integrity of its labor standards.

Border Patrol and Air Operations Rescue Injured Migrants

TUCSON, AZU.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Air and Marine Operations (AMO) and U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) agents collaborated to rescue undocumented migrants who had crossed into the United States after being shot in Mexico. The incident occurred near Papago Farms, Arizona, where Tucson Air Branch UH-60 and H125 aircrews responded to a 911 call about the wounded individuals.

The UH-60 crew deployed a U.S. Border Patrol Search, Trauma, and Rescue (BORSTAR) team to triage the victims. Two individuals were found in critical condition and required immediate medical care. When civilian medical transport was delayed, the UH-60 aircrew transferred the critically wounded to a medical center.

Jose Muriente, Deputy Director of Air and Marine Operations, praised the quick response and expertise of the teams involved. BORSTAR agents, who are highly trained in tactical medical and search and rescue operations, played a crucial role in the rescue.

AMO, with its extensive aviation and maritime resources, continues to be a key player in securing U.S. borders, highlighted by their significant enforcement actions in Fiscal Year 2023.

ABOUT FDA-

The FDA, an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, protects the public health by assuring the safety, effectiveness, and security of human and veterinary drugs, vaccines and other biological products for human use, and medical devices. The agency also is responsible for the safety and security of our nation’s food supply, cosmetics, dietary supplements, radiationemitting electronic products, and for regulating tobacco products.

The International Olympic Committee could be adding an Indian sponsor soon. The move can be seen as a sign of India’s growing influence over the sport.

Anne-Sophie Voumard, the IOC’s marketing director said, “We would love to welcome a first new TOP sponsor from India and I am sure that this is going to happen very, very soon.” She added, “For us, it is certainly a country that we believe has a lot of potential, including in commercials. Its GDP is increasing and developing really, really nicely.” It may be noted that India may be bidding to host the Olympics in 2036. Currently, the IOC has 15 partners, which collectively paid almost $740 million last year in cash and services.
