US and allies call for 21-day ceasefire across Lebanon-Israel border

Allies including the US, UK and EU have called for a temporary ceasefire in Lebanon, following an escalation in fighting between Israel and Hezbollah.

The 12-strong bloc proposed an immediate 21-day pause in fighting "to provide space for diplomacy towards the conclusion of a diplomatic settlement" and a ceasefire in Gaza.

In a joint statement, they said the

Gunshots Fired at Kamala Harris' Arizona Office Again

Multiple gunshots were fired at a campaign office of US Vice President Kamala Harris in Arizona, police said. The gunshot damage from several bullets, believed to have been fired sometime after midnight on Monday, was discovered at the Democratic campaign office near Southern Avenue and Priest Drive in Tempe, the city police told The New York Post. “No one was inside the office during the overnight hours, but this raises concerns about the safety of those who work in that building, as well as those nearby,” Public Information Officer Ryan Cook said.

Biden Tells Hillary Clinton 'I Love You' After Jill's Prank

US President Joe Biden professed his admiration for former First Lady Hillary Clinton and stated that he loved her for defending him in public after he was "trapped" by his wife, Jill Biden, to give a speech in New York City. It all happened at the Clinton Global Initiative's summit on Monday evening. "I — this is what you call being trapped," Biden said, thanking the former first couple, Bill and Hillary Clinton. Biden said he was not going to make a "long" speech "because I didn't think I was going to be talking about this."

hostilities were "intolerable" and presented an "unacceptable risk of a broader regional escalation" that was neither in the interest of the people of Israel or Lebanon.

It comes after Israel’s military chief told troops on Wednesday that extensive air strikes in Lebanon targeting Hezbollah could pave the way for them to “enter enemy territory”.

The remarks by Lt Gen Halevi are the plainest indication yet from a senior figure that a ground invasion into Lebanon may be imminent.

The joint statement was signed by the US, Australia, Canada, the European Union, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and Qatar.

Trump warned by US intelligence of Iran assassination threats - campaign

Donald Trump has been briefed by US intelligence on threats from Iran to assassinate him, his campaign said.

The Republican presidential candidate was briefed "regarding real and specific threats from Iran to assassinate him in an effort to destabilize and sow chaos in the United States", the campaign said in a statement.

Harris

It did not elaborate on the claims, and it was not immediately clear if the threats it referred to were new or had been previously reported.

The Iranian government did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but Tehran has previously denied US claims of interfering in American affairs.

Trump posted on the social media site X, formerly Twitter, that there are "big threats on my life by Iran."

"Moves were already made by Iran that didn’t work out, but they will try again."

An attack on him was a "death wish by the attacker" he said, and he thanked Congress for approving more money for the Secret Service.

promises 'pragmatic' approach in economic pitch to voters

US Vice-President Kamala Harris, seeking to sharpen her economic message, pledged to usher in new investments in domestic manufacturing across a range of industries if elected to the White House in November.

In a speech in the must-win state of Pennslyvania on Wednesday, Harris cast herself as "a capitalist" with a pragmatic approach to boosting the middle class. An hour before the speech, her

New York City Mayor Eric Adams indicted on federal charges

New York City Mayor Eric Adams is facing federal criminal charges, according to CBS News, the BBC's US partner. Adams, 64, was elected to lead the most populous US city nearly three years ago on a promise to rein in crime. But he and a string of top officials in his orbit have faced growing scrutiny as part of multiple federal corruption probes. The indictment remains sealed but would make Adams, 64, the first mayor in city history to be charged while in office.

Canada's Trudeau survives no-confidence vote in parliament

Republican rival Donald Trump touted his own economic agenda - including a 15% made-in-America tax proposal - while visiting North Carolina.

Both candidates are campaigning in battleground states this week on their competing visions for the econcomy, a key issue that voters say is a top priority in casting a ballot.

In a tacit rebuttal to Republican claims that she supports "communist" policies, Harris declared herself as "a capitalist". "I promise you I will be pragmatic in my approach," she said at an event hosted by The Economic Club of Pittsburgh. Building on her vision for an "opportunity economy", Harris laid out new proposals to help young families, first time homebuyers and the elderly through $100bn worth in tax breaks and financial incentives. She vowed new investments in artifical intelligence, aerospace and energy development. Harris added, however, that tax rates for large corporations and the wealthiest Americans must rise so they "pay their fair share".

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has survived a motion in parliament aimed at bringing down his government and triggering an election. Wednesday's no-confidence vote is the first in a series of similar votes expected to be put forward by the opposition Conservative Party amid Trudeau's plummeting approval ratings.

Ryan Routh charged with attempted assassination of Trump

US prosecutors have charged a man arrested near Donald Trump's Florida golf course with the attempted assassination of a presidential candidate. It comes a day after a court filing showed Ryan Wesley Routh had written a note months ago saying he intended to kill Trump. Routh, 58, already faces up to 20 years behind bars on two gunrelated charges. But he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted on the new, more serious charge.

Putin Issues Nuclear Warning To West In Response To "Massive" Air Attack

Earlier today, President Putin called for an urgent meeting of Moscow's top security council to discuss its nuclear deterrence. The move came amid rising concerns in Russia over Ukraine being allowed by Western powers to use cruise missiles against it.

Moscow: Vladimir Putin today issued a nuclear warning to the West in the event of a "massive" air attack on Russia. This includes the use of cruise missiles which the UK has supplied to Ukraine for Kyiv to target locations deep within Russian territory.

President Putin's remarks came after his urgent meeting with Moscow's top security council to discuss Russia's nuclear deterrence.

Russia's threat comes amid rising concerns in Moscow over Ukraine being allowed by Western powers - especially the UK and US - to use cruise missiles against it.

Last week the UK reportedly cleared the use of its 'Storm Shadow' cruise missile to be used to bomb Russia. UK Prime

Minister Keir Starmer even flew to Washington DC to meet US President Joe Biden. The two leaders reportedly discussed Ukraine's use of weapons on Russian soil.

The Russian intelligence had information

about such a possibility and had said earlier this month that "It has become necessary for Moscow to revise its nuclear doctrine because of the West's escalation of the war in Ukraine."

Israel Signals Lebanon Invasion Amid Biden's "All-Out War" Warning

Israel has told its soldiers to prepare for a possible ground operation against Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon as US President Joe Biden warned against "all-out war" in the Middle East. Israel's army chief, Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, told a tank brigade that they are "attacking" Lebanon to prepare the ground for the possibility of their entry into Lebanon, according to a statement on Wednesday, The Israeli military said it hit more than 2,000 Hezbollah targets in Lebanon over the past three days.Prime Minister

IMF approves $7bn loan to cash-strapped Pakistan

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved a $7bn (£5.25bn) loan to cash-strapped Pakistan. The country is due to receive the first $1bn of the loan immediately, with the balance to be paid out over the next three years.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed the decision and thanked the head of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva, and her team. Pakistan has taken more than 20 loans from the IMF since 1958 and is currently its fifth-largest debtor.

Benjamin Netanyahu vowed that Israel's military operations against Hezbollah would not stop until northern residents displaced by cross-border clashes could safely return to their homes.Israel's warnings came after Hezbollah said it had targeted Israel's Mossad spy agency headquarters on Tel Aviv's outskirts -- the first time it has fired a ballistic missile in almost a year of cross-border clashes sparked by the Gaza war. Israel's close ally, the United States, said it did not think Israeli troops' ground operation in Lebanon is "imminent".

"It doesn't look like something is imminent," Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh told reporters. US President Joe Biden, however, warned of the possibility of "all-out war" in the Middle East. "An all-out war is possible," he told a news channel. The US, France, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and some other partner nations called for an immediate 21-day ceasefire across the Israel-Lebanon border, according to a joint statement of the countries released late on Wednesday.

"Don't Want To Be Sandwiched...": New Sri Lanka President's India-China Plans

Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Sri Lanka's newly elected Marxist President, has pledged to avoid being "sandwiched" between India and China, while maintaining strong relations with both nations. In an interview with The Monocle magazine, given before his election win, Dissanayake outlined his foreign policy

strategy, stressing neutrality amid the geopolitical tensions in South Asia and the Indian Ocean region. He acknowledged the importance of India and China as key partners, both capable of providing vital financial aid as Sri Lanka continues to recover from the financial crisis that led to its sovereign default in 2022. Dissanayake also expressed a desire to strengthen ties with the West, the Middle East, and Africa, signaling a more diversified approach to foreign relations. "We won't take sides in any geopolitical conflict or align with any camp. Both China and India are valued friends, and we look forward to enhancing these partnerships," he stated.

United States and United Kingdom are about to give clearance to Ukraine for Kyiv to launch cruise missiles on Russian soil, President Putin said this month that, "The West would be directly fighting with Russia if it gave such permission to Ukraine (to bomb Russia)" adding that Moscow would be forced to make "appropriate decisions" in such a scenario. Russia is the world's largest nuclear power. Together, Russia and the United States control 88% of the world's nuclear weapons. Russia's current nuclear doctrine was set in place by Vladimir Putin four years ago, before the war with Ukraine broke out. According to the current doctrine, Russia may use nuclear weapons in the scenario where it comes under a nuclear attack or if a conventional attack threatens the existence of the state.

'We have a difficult history with China': Jaishankar

External affairs minister S. Jaishankar has clarified his statement about 75 per cent of the border dispute with China being resolved, saying he referred specifically to the “disengagement” aspect in eastern Ladakh. Speaking at the Asia Society Policy Institute in New York on Tuesday, Jaishankar said India has had a “difficult history” with China. “When I said 75 per cent of it has been sorted out, it’s only of the disengagement. So, that’s one part of the problem,” he said, adding that challenges remained in other areas

Censor Board Clears Kangana Ranaut's 'Emergency' With Cuts

Mumbai: Actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut's new film, 'Emergency', can be released as long as "some cuts" - to be recommended by the Censor Board of Film Certification's revision committee - are made, the Bombay High Court was told Thursday afternoon.

The movie was supposed to release on September 6, but ran into trouble after complaints of historical inaccuracies and misrepresenting the Sikh community.

The movie is based on the Emergency imposed in 1975 by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Government sources have told NDTV "there is some sensitive content" and that "religious sentiments cannot be hurt".

The High Court was hearing a petition by the movie's co-producers, Zee Entertainment Enterprises, seeking the release of the censor certificate so the movie can hit the screens.

Last week the court directed the CBFC

to take a final call, accepting the film ratings body's reservations but noting "it is not for CBFC to decide whether this affects public order".

Justice BP Colabwalla, one of two judges in the division bench hearing this case, pointed out Ms Ranaut's production is not a documentary, and asked, "Do you think public is so naive they will believe everything in a movie? What about creative freedom?"

The court also said the CBFC "can't sit on the fence". "Take a decision. Let's see what the revising committee says, be it deciding to release or not, take a

"We have to see if this is factually accurate," he said, while also noting there is no "political angle" in the movie.

Earlier, the matter came up before the Madhya Pradesh High Court when two Sikh organisations filed a PIL. In response, the CBFC told the court the movie had not been issued a certificate.

'You Have Rs. 15,000 Crore Due Why Only Settle BCCI's': Supreme Court To Byju's

The insolvency appellate tribunal NCLAT did not apply its mind while closing insolvency proceedings against the firm, the top court has said.

The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLT)'s relief for Byju's came on August 2 after it approved Rs.158.9 crore dues settlement with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). It came as a huge relief for founder Byju Raveendran, which put him back in control.

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) continued to distance itself from the BJP MP Kangana Ranaut's statement on farm laws and National Spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill on Wednesday labelled her remarks as 'baseless and illogical', adding that the Mandi MP's statement is damaging the good work done by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Speaking to ANI on actor and BJP MP Mandi Kangana Ranaut's remarks on farmers, Jaiveer Shergill said, "I am grateful to the BJP for distancing themselves from the comments of Kangana Ranaut. But, as a Punjabi, I must say that Kangana Ranaut's consistent rant, useless, baseless and illogical statements against the Sikh community, the farmers of Punjab are damaging all the good work, the welfare-oriented, the Vikas-oriented work being done, that has been done by PM Modi for the welfare of Punjab,

Must Remember...": Kangana Ranaut Withdraws Farm Laws Remarks

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Kangana Ranaut today said she "regrets" her comment that the three farm laws -- that were at the core of the farmers' protest in 2020 -- be brought back. Speaking to reporters in her Lok Sabha constituency of Mandi in Himachal Pradesh, the actor-politician on Tuesday had said the laws - rolled back by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government in November 2021 after massive agitations - "should be brought back... (and) farmers themselves should demand it".

are a pillar of strength for the nation's development and I want to appeal to them - demand the laws back for your own good," Kangana Ranaut said.

The BJP, however, said her comments do not represent the party's views and clarified that the remarks are Ms Ranaut's "personal statement".

"Kangana Ranaut is not authorised to make such a statement on behalf of the BJP and it doesn't depict the BJP's view on the farm bills," Party's spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said.

She responded to Mr Bhatia's statement and said, "My views on farm laws are personal and they don't represent the party's stand on those Bills."

"I have to keep in mind that I am not just an artist but also a BJP worker. My opinions should not be personal and should be the party's stand. I regret and take my words back if my comments have disappointed anyone," she said.

The actor-turned-politician was quoted as saying, "I know this statement could be controversial, but the three farm laws should be brought back. Farmers themselves should demand it." After the BJP stated that her comments were "not authorised," Ms Ranaut retracted her remarks and issued an apology. She added that moving forward, she will ensure her views align with the party's stance rather than representing her personal opinions. "Having said that there should not be any doubt that PM Modi's bond with Punjab, the farmer of Punjab and Punjabiyat is an unbreakable, unshakable bond and that bond should not be judged or seen through the lens of irresponsible comments being made by one MP Kangana Ranaut," the BJP national spokesperson added.

Late last month, Supna Chaudhuri Jain, announced her run for re-election to the Illinois District 204 School Board in April 2025. The Indian Prairie School District 204, in Illinois serves over 25,600 students from Will and DuPage counties. The vast school district covers about 33 schools in Naperville and Aurora and one in Bolingbrook.

While the school district has been variously known for its academics and extracurriculars, what also sets it apart is the diverse demography of the students in the district. Long-time Naperville resident and mom of two kids attending the school district, Supna Jain decided to run to be on the board because she believes in order to bring positive changes in societal structures around us, it is best to get involved and work towards those changes. Professionally, Jain is a Principal Lecturer in Communication and the Director of the Speaking Center at North Central College. An academician with a vast experience, Jain has earlier taught at Illinois State University and the College of DuPage. Jain teaches courses in public speaking, intercultural, interpersonal, and group communication. A trained Indian classical dancer, Jain also teaches Indian dance at Naperville Park District.

In between her teaching assignments and dance practices, Jain took out time to talk to Hi India Weekly about being a school board member and why advocacy and grass root activism are important tools to bring important changes.

On Why School Board Matters

Often many people do not explore options to get involved at the city, township or school levels thinking that it is a time-consuming role and may be fit for those vying for a bigger political role. However, Ms Jain, encourages people to get involved if they have the means and time to.

On what exactly it means to be a school board member, Jain says, “A school board is a set of seven individuals who work together for the governance of a publicschool district. These board members have a set of responsibilities such as setting the school board vision and goals, evaluating the superintendents’ performance, advocating on behalf of students and the parents, managing the school resources and offering advice on their optimal usage in the best interest of the school and the state, overseeing district wide curriculum as well as establishing policies.”

Supna Jain Meet

The Indian Prairie School District 204, in Illinois serves students from suburbs of Naperville, Aurora, Bolingbroke, Plainfield.

Zofeen Maqsood

Ms Jain also explains that the board members are elected during municipal elections by registered voters in the community.

What got her interested

Ms Jain’s keen interest in governance can be seen by the fact that she studied political science and communication from the University of Illinois in Urbana

Champaign. She then went on to a Masters’ of Science in Communication from Illinois State University and pursued a law degree from DePaul University. On why despite her full professional schedule, she felt inclined to be a part of the school board, Jain says, “Since a very young age, I had been intrigued by governance. Growing up I wanted to understand the system(s) and how it works.” Perhaps that quest to understand all the social as well as legal aspects led Ms Jain to pursue a degree in law and work as a litigation consultant. In her own words she says, “I found my true calling in the classroom rather than courtroom!”

Why Getting involved is Important

As a Professor and a school board member Ms Jain says, “I want to empower students and make them believe that they can bring about important changes.”

Coming from an Indian heritage, Ms Jain agrees that the Indian American community is on an interesting cusp currently in the country. It may not be an exaggeration to say that the community is in many ways shaping the face of what immigration looks like in America by not only making great academic and financial strides but also getting involved in statesmanship like never before. So, during such eventful times what does Ms Jain have to say to the community on the importance of getting involved? “There is so much happening at the local, social and political level. One has to find what interests them and where they can be best useful.”

Giving an example from her own experiences, she says, “I have always been a political junkie. But I realized that I can either sit on the sofa and complain or stand up

and work towards making a change. And that played a catalyst in my life and I decided to put my name in the running for the school board.”

She adds, “It is important to be engaged with how our system works. If we are beneficiaries of a system and are unhappy with the system, it is imperative to be a part of the solution. So, if one has the time, capacity and resources one should think of getting involved at local levels.”

On serving in the District 204 School board

Ms Jain says, “It has been the honor of my life to serve in this area. Every child has a right to proper education and this is the primary goal that determines all our policies.”

On how one goes about being a member, Ms Jain says, “To contest to be in the elected position of a school board member and to get your name on the ballot, you have to get signatures from residents in your district and then file your petition with the county commissioner.” She adds, “It goes without saying that you also have to be interested in public education, understand the community needs and be a true advocate.”

On the Diversity in Naperville

Ms Jain has been a Naperville resident for more than a decade. The city is known as much for its big-city amenities and small-town charm as it is for its diverse population. An increasing number of South Asians are making Naperville their home, owing to many factors including safety, great schools and libraries and diverse places of worship. On her experiences as a Naperville resident, Ms Jain shares, “I didn’t even realize how diverse Naperville was, until I moved here in October 2010. I saw holiday lights outside many homes and wondered if Christmas came early in the town! Only to realize they were beautiful Diwali lights. It was the first time I saw so many Diwali lights in an American neighborhood and I was so proud to be a part of it.”

On why Naperville continues to be popular amongst the Indian-American community, she says, “Most public schools in the area are ranked high. Many South Asians are willing to make sacrifices for good schools for their kids. Also, the city is an incredible place to raise families, it has a great park district, it has diverse businesses and is very family friendly and safe.”

Diversity at Naperville Schools

During her years as the school board member, Ms Jain has seen some challenging times such as the Covid-19 outbreak. She says, “Some of our most significant work was to keep students safe from Covid. We also try to be very efficient with our funds and work on strategic planning.”

On the South Asian diversity in school she says, “We have very active student South Asian organizations; we also have several student clubs such as Cricket and calming organizations. We are a leading district when it comes to work in Equity. Our district drafted the first Equity belief statement, which was adopted by the Illinois Association School Board. We also have an active Parent-Diversity Advisor Committee where parents highlight the cultural needs of district students. We do celebrate Diwali and Eid parties amongst other festivals. Food wise, while we are always conscious about healthy food we do have ethnic dishes like aloo choley sometimes!

Manchester United stadium regeneration could add £7.3bn to British economy

A proposed regeneration of the area around Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium could generate £7.3 billion ($9.7 billion) annually to the British economy, according to an economic feasibility study commissioned by the club.

However, mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham said on Monday no public money would go towards the project.

United are considering whether to pursue a £2 billion plan for a brand new 100,000-seater stadium or redevelop the existing 74,000 capacity Old Trafford. Burnham has backed the ambitions to redevelop the stadium alongside a "mixed use" neighbourhood featuring apartment blocks, shopping centres and new public transport stations.

Ex-England Spinner: "If Ashwin Were English,

Former England spinner of Indian descent Monty Panesar has stated that if legendary Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was an England player, he would have been asked to retire by now. In what seems like a dig at the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the England management, Panesar said that Ashwin, 38, would not have been left out in favour of younger players. Recently, pacer James Anderson called it quits at the age of 41, with many experts stating that they felt that Anderson had been forced to retire.

Ashwin smashed 113 with the bat against Bangladesh, and then picked up

New Coach For PV Sindhu, Says Father

After the disappointment of Paris Olympics 2024, India's star shuttler PV Sindhu has taken a new route. After stating her intention to take a break to regain her motivation for badminton, Sindhu will now still aim for glory at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, her father PV Ramana has revealed. The 29-year-old will be getting back into action by participating in the upcoming European season, and has followed the path of fellow shuttler Lakshya Sen in her choice of coach for the tour.

He'd Be Told to Retire"

six wickets with the ball to guide India to victory in the first Test.

"They experiment more. If Ashwin was English right now, then they would have told him to retire because they

want to bring youngsters who have the potential to play. But I think England experiments more, and they like to experiment," Panesar told ANI. Earlier, former England coach David Lloyd had earlier blasted the England cricket management for "forcing out" James Anderson. The pacer retired with 704 Test wickets, after wish England have moved onto younger blood in the form of Gus Atkinson. "He was forced out because of his age. In this era of inclusivity, it takes the biscuit that someone has been stopped for that reason. Reader, let me tell you: I know the feeling. Inclusivity, my arse," Lloyd had written in his column.

Ex-Pakistan Star: Indian Bowlers on Par with Akram, Akhtar, Waqar

The Indian cricket team's dominant 280-run victory against Bangladesh in the Test series opener at Chepauk has drawn reactions from all across the globe. Bangladesh came into the series on the back of a 2-0 Test series triumph in Pakistan, raising fans' expectations for the India assignment. However, the first match saw the hosts assert their dominance, with R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant, and Shubman Gill emerging as the brightest stars.

As the world of social media extols the performance of Rohit Sharma & Co., former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali has extended stunning praise. Basit has compared the Indian team's bowling unit to Pakistan's pace trio of Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar, and Waqar Younis.

"The Indian bowling unit is so impactful that they are on level with pacers Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar, and Waqar Younis. Right now, Mohammed Shami is not playing," Basit said on his YouTube channel, where he acknowledged that the bowling lineup looked really strong despite the absence of Mohammed Shami, who is recovering from ankle surgery and has been out of action.

With the Indian team also scheduled to travel to Australia for a 5-match Test series later this year, Basit feels the addition of Lucknow Super Giants pacer Mayank Yadav could make India's fast bowling attack even more attractive.

Global advisory firm Oxford Economics revealed the regeneration project could deliver 92,000 new jobs, more than 17,000 new homes and an extra 1.8million visitors per year to the area.

"This could be the biggest regeneration scheme I've ever seen in this country," said Burnham.

"We hope it's the best football stadium in the world, which brings benefits to residents around it."

The project is being spearheaded by United co-owner, British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe, who bought a minority stake in the club earlier this year.

Although Ratcliffe initially hinted he could pursue government assistance in order to fund a "Wembley of the north", that appears now to have been ruled out. Last week United appointed globally renowned architects Foster Partners to work on the plans.

Steve Smith Calls Jasprit Bumrah 'Best Across Formats'

Veteran Australia cricketer Steve Smith had huge praise for India pacer Jasprit Bumrah following the latter’s exploits in the first Test against Bangladesh in Chennai recently. Bumrah took five wickets across both the Bangladesh innings, including a four-fer in the first innings. India are scheduled to tour Australia for the BorderGavaskar Trophy, where they will play five Tests.

“He’s a wonderful bowler, whether I face him with the new ball, slightly older ball, or even the old ball,” the 35 year-old said on Star Sports. Bumrah, who played a crucial role in India’s T20 World Cup triumph this year, was named Player of the Tournament after he took 15 wickets.

Irrespective of the format, the 30 year-old is a threat to the opposition with his accuracy of deliveries and flexibility. Smith termed the Gujarat speedster as the “best fast bowler” across all formats. “He’s got great skills with all of them. He’s a great bowler, arguably the best fast bowler across the three formats,” commented the New South Wales cricketer.

Mamata Banerjee pledges full support to GlobalFoundries for chip R&D

Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday assured ‘all support’ to the capability centre of the world’s third largest semiconductor chips maker, GlobalFoundries (GF), a day after the US President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a joint statement praised the combined efforts of the two nations to facilitate resilient, secure and sustainable semiconductor supply chains, including through GF’s Kolkata Power Centre in Calcutta.

The chief minister said in a post on X that the initiative to develop the semiconductor industry in Bengal was underpinned by a “long and arduous”

“Continuous deliberations coupled with successful promotion of the state’s capacity have led to GF’ recent proposal to set up a Global Capability Centre in Calcutta. I assure all support to the emerging investment in this frontier sector.

The US is planning to ban certain hardware and software made in China and Russia from cars, trucks and buses in the US due to security risks. Officials said they were worried that the technology in question, used for autonomous driving and to connect cars to other networks, could allow enemies to "remotely manipulate cars on American roads".

There is currently minimal use of Chinese or Russia-made software in American cars. But Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said the plans were "targeted, proactive" steps to protect the US.

Superdry boss says Shein allowed to 'dodge tax'

The boss of the clothing chain Superdry says its rival Shein is being allowed to "dodge tax", and is urging the government to take action.

Julian Dunkerton told the BBC the fast fashion giant was enjoying an unfair advantage because import duties are not charged on the lowvalue parcels it sends direct to customers from overseas. Shein declined to comment, but has previously said that its success was due to its "efficient supply chain", not tax exemptions. The Treasury said tax policies had to balance the interests of consumers and retailers.

The Telegraph reached out to GF on Monday, which said that the Calcutta facility, which came under the company’s fold in July through the acquisition of Tagore Technology’s Power Gallium Nitride (GaN) portfolio, will bring together design and application under one roof.

China unveils raft of measures to boost economy

People's Bank of China Governor Pan Gongsheng announced the measures in a rare news conference

China's central bank has unveiled a major package of measures aimed at reviving the country's flagging economy. People's Bank of China (PBOC) Governor Pan Gongsheng announced plans to lower borrowing costs and allow banks to increase their lending.

The move comes after a series of disappointing data has increased expectations in recent months that the world's second largest economy will

miss its own 5% growth target this year.

Stock markets in Asia jumped after Mr Pan's announcement.

Speaking at a rare news conference alongside officials from two other financial regulators, Mr Pan said the central bank would cut the amount of cash banks have to hold in reserve - known as reserve requirement ratios (RRR).

The RRR will initially be cut by half a percentage point, in a move expected to free up about 1 trillion yuan ($142bn; £106bn).

Mr Pan added that another cut may be made later in the year.

Further measures aimed to boost China's crisis-hit property market include cutting interest rates for existing mortgages and lowering minimum down payments on all types of homes to 15%. The country's real estate industry has been struggling with a sharp downturn since 2021.

California sues Exxon over

plastics recycling 'deception'

California's attorney general is suing ExxonMobil, alleging the oil giant engaged in a “decades-long campaign of deception” about the effectiveness of plastics recycling.

In the civil lawsuit filed on Monday, Attorney General Rob Bonta accused Exxon of contributing to a "deluge" of plastic pollution, while telling Californians that recycling was a fix. "For decades, ExxonMobil has been deceiving the public to convince us

that plastic recycling could solve the plastic waste and pollution crisis when they clearly knew this wasn’t possible,” Bonta said. In a statement, Exxon blamed California for an inefficient recycling programme. "For decades, California officials have known their recycling system isn't effective. They failed to act, and now they seek to blame others. Instead of suing us, they could have worked with us to fix the problem and keep plastic out of landfills," the company said in a statement. An Exxon spokesperson added that the company had processed more than 60 million pounds (27 million kilograms) of plastic waste into usable raw materials, "keeping it out of landfills". Bonta's office said the case marks the first time US officials have attempted to hold a gas or oil company accountable for deceptive claims about plastics recycling.

The union representing thousands of striking Boeing workers has hit out at what the aircraft manufacturing giant called its "best and final" pay offer, which proposed a 30% rise over four years.

The new offer also included the reinstatement of a performance bonus and improved retirement benefits. However, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) said the offer was not negotiated with the union and that "it was thrown at us without any discussion" - a claim Boeing denies. More than 30,000 Boeing workers went on strike earlier this month after rejecting a 25% pay rise offer.

Telegram will now provide some user data to authorities

The messaging app Telegram has said it will hand over users' IP addresses and phone numbers to authorities who have search warrants or other valid legal requests.

The change to its terms of service and privacy policy "should discourage criminals", CEO Pavel Durov said in a Telegram post on Monday.

“While 99.999% of Telegram users have nothing to do with crime, the 0.001% involved in illicit activities create a bad image for the entire platform, putting the interests of our almost billion users at risk,” he continued.

The announcement marks a significant reversal for Mr Durov, the platform’s Russianborn co-founder who was detained by French authorities last month at an airport just north of Paris. Days later, prosecutors there charged him with enabling criminal activity on the platform. Allegations against him include complicity in spreading child abuse images and trafficking of drugs. He was also charged with failing to comply with law enforcement.

How to Stop Eating Junk Food: 10 Tips to Control Your Cravings

It’s 3 p.m. and you’re experiencing that all-too-familiar afternoon slump. It brings on a fierce sugar (or salt or caffeine) craving. You’re not alone. Many people deal with cravings on a frequent, even daily basis. Believe it or not, food manufacturers often create foods with the goal of igniting that cycle of addiction in consumers. They aim for the “bliss point” in a product. This is the point at which the eater experiences the ultimate pleasure, with not too much and not too little salty, sweet, and fatty flavors. These combinations are particularly hard to resist, and your brain reacts in a similar way as with cocaine and other drug addictionsTrusted Source. While succumbing to cravings may seem inevitable in the moment, there are a few simple things you can do to control them. Here are 10 ideas to get you started.

1. Plan ahead

There’s no better way to handle cravings than planning your meals and snacks ahead of time. If you have a healthy meal and snacks packed and ready for you at lunchtime and in the afternoon, you’re far less likely to grab a leftover piece of pizza, order French fries, or eat the sweets someone brought in to the office. In other words, you will reduce your “food cue reactivityTrusted Source.” This is what researchers call your susceptibility to being influenced by the food smells, advertisements, and conversations surrounding you every day.

Try to plan out each week’s meals on Sunday, or the day before your workweek starts. Go grocery shopping for what you need. Then prepare large batches of easy foods like brown rice, beans, stir-fried or roasted vegetables, or cold salads. Use food storage containers, mason jars, or foil to pack up serving sizes that you can grab in the morning on your way out the door. Fruits like apples, bananas, and oranges travel well and can be kept on your desk, making them easy afternoon snacks.

2. Shop the perimeter

The perimeter of the grocery store typically includes the produce, dairy, meat, and fish sections. This is where you’ll find real foods, rather than highly processed food products. When you go shopping, try to purchase items only from these sections. If a food item has more than a few ingredients on the label (or ones you can’t pronounce), don’t buy it. This is a key step in transitioning your diet to whole foods.

Over time, your body and palate will get used to: fresh vegetables fruit grains proteins

You’ll be getting all the nutrients you need from these healthy foods, so your cravings for the fake stuff will start to diminish. It may take a few weeks, but eventually it won’t even taste good to

you!

3. Eat healthy fats

One of the most common nutrition myths is that fat makes you fat. In fact, your body needs fat! However, there are many different types of fat. You should avoid trans fats and limit saturated fats, but heart-healthy fats like nuts and avocado will help you feel full and reduce cravings. Have a handful of mixed nuts as an afternoon snack. Or you can make a homemade salad dressing with olive oil and vinegar. Adding fresh guacamole or a fatty fish like salmon to your day is also a great way to incorporate healthy, filling fats.

4. Eat enough protein

Protein makes you feel fullTrusted Source, often more so than other macronutrients like carbs. Fill your diet with healthy sources of protein including: fish beans vegetables nuts

When you’re full, there’s less room — and less desire — for junk food.

5. Try fruit

Fruit has sugar, but it has a lot of vitamins, antioxidants, and water, too. It also contains fiber, which slows and balances out the effects on your blood sugar. This prevents the sugar crash. Once you wean yourself off of manufactured sugar, fruit will taste a lot sweeter and more satisfying to you. Grab a bowl of berries or a piece of watermelon if you’re craving something sweet.

6. Taste the rainbow

Add some new and different foods to your routine. The more varied your diet, the less likely you will get bored or crave junk food. For example, add a new green to your salad (mustard greens, anyone?), or try a new type of fish this week like tuna.

Bonus: Eating diverse foods of many colors boosts your overall health and helps with disease prevention, too. Examples include purple potatoes, red beets, orange carrots, and green kale.

7. Think about junk food differently

A 2013 studyTrusted Source showed that when people were trained to look at and interpret one of their most-craved junk foods in a negative light, desire for

it lessened. Participants were asked to view the craved food as if: they were already feeling very full they just saw the food item sneezed on they could save the item for later they were told about negative consequences of eating the food (stomachache, weight gain)

Your mind is much more powerful than you might think. It can’t hurt to experiment!

8. Focus on adding healthy foods

A study in the journal NutrientsTrusted Source showed that focusing on the positive side of healthy eating is more effective than focusing on the need to remove junk food.

The more healthy foods you add in, the easier it will be to crowd out the unhealthy ones. Stay positive!

9. Work on stress management

There’s almost always an emotional component behind cravings. Sure, you really need the brownie because you like the flavor. Or your blood sugar is low and you need an energy boost. You’re more likely to grab the Cheetos or leftover cookies when you’re upset or stressed by something.

Consider how you may be eating (or drinking) as a way to stuff feelings, distract yourself, or procrastinate. Try to be compassionate to yourself and do some gentle exploration. Practice redirecting yourself when you feel the urge to reach for food instead of doing what needs to be done, or saying what needs to be said.

Healthy stress management tools include:

- taking a walk or run

- yoga

- meditating for a few minutes taking some deep breaths

- talking to a trusted friend or family member

- doing something creative like painting

- journaling

Experiment and find what works best for you. If your stress feels overwhelming, talk to your doctor or a mental health professional. They can offer emotional support and suggest other effective, healthy, non-food coping methods.

10.

Get more sleep

Most people don’t get nearly enough sleep. And while you’re probably aware of the effects on your mood or energy level, you may not know that lack of sleep is also thought to play a big role in junk food cravings. A recent study in SleepTrusted Source showed that sleep restriction resulted in more hunger and less ability to control intake of “palatable snacks.”

So make the effort to turn in a little bit earlier every night. You might also want to stop eating a few hours before you intend to go to bed. A full stomach can cause indigestion and interfere with your ability to fall or stay asleep.

Scientists Call For Slower Planes To Cut Emissions

There is bad news for nervous fliers who find the flight experience to be more stressful than enjoyable. Scientists are now suggesting that slowing aeroplanes can help combat climate change. According to a new report from the University of Cambridge, scientists have suggested that flight speeds be cut by 15%, which could add as much as 50 minutes to flights across the Atlantic.

While such a change would no doubt generate a lot of noise among already-stressed air travellers, the scientists argue this will impact fuel consumption and thereby carbon emissions. They estimate that a slower flight speed could reduce fuel burn by 5% to 7%, contributing to a greener aviation industry.

state governments," he said.

Mr Pichai said the Prime Minister has always challenged them to do more for India. "He is asking to do the same with AI. He has a clear vision, both in terms of the opportunity AI will create, but he wants to make sure that ultimately AI is there to benefit the people of India."

Mr Pichai was among CEOs of tech giants who met Prime Minister Modi for a roundtable in New York today. Hosted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) School of Engineering, the roundtable was attended by Nvidia's Jensen Huang, Adobe's Shantanu Narayen, Accenture's Julie Sweet, AMD's Lisa Su, Biogen's Chris Viehbacher, HP's Enrique Lores, and IBM's Arvind Krishna, among others.

As per the analysis carried out by the University of Cambridge, currently, only about 10% of the global population flies Link to footnote, a figure expected to grow as incomes rise. Yet, aviation already accounts for around 2.5% of global CO2 emissions, and when non-CO2 effects are included, its contribution to climate warming increases to approximately 4%.

The study found that despite ambitious pledges from governments and industry to achieve a net-zero aviation sector by 2050, the sector remains dangerously off track. Without swift and decisive action, we risk missing the opportunity to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 and delaying the crucial technological and business transformations needed.

The film, starring Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff in lead roles, released in theatres on April 11. The complaint was filed at Bandra Police Station on September 2, 2024. The complainants accuse Ali Abbas Zaffar, Himanshu Mehra, Ekesh Ranadive, and others of multiple serious offenses, including fraud, cheating, misappropriation of funds, criminal conspiracy, money laundering, and harassment. The allegations stem from their involvement in the production of the film Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (BMCM). The complainant asserts that Zaffar and his associates misrepresented their abilities and mismanaged the film's production, leading to significant financial losses. They are accused of inflating budgets, receiving kickbacks, fabricating invoices, and siphoning funds through a shell company in Abu Dhabi. Additionally, Bhagnani claims that despite assurances, the accused mishandled contracts, failed to provide proper financial records, and demanded unapproved payments. This, along with claims of extortion, coercion, and defamation, has led Bhagnani to seek legal action.

Sharing a photo from the event on Instagram, the 32-year-old wrote, “IRONMAN 70.3 Finisher. It was some adventure, freezing cold and getting lost on route! Long post to follow soon, once it all sinks in.”

“It’s been a week since I crossed off a long-held dream: completing the Ironman 70.3! "Reform is the key to relevance," he said. Netanyahu Sends Message to Lebanese After Deadly Strikes

After Israeli strikes killed nearly 500 people in Lebanon, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the Lebanese people, urging them not to act as "human shields" for Hezbollah. He stressed that Israel's war is against Hezbollah, not the Lebanese people, accusing the militant group of hiding missiles in civilian areas. Netanyahu urged the Lebanese to leave conflict zones, warning them to heed the Israeli Defence Forces' (IDF) warnings and ensure their safety. He reassured that once Israel's military operations were over, they could safely return home.

The strikes are part of "Operation Northern Arrows," aimed at Hezbollah in southern and eastern Lebanon, including targeted strikes in Beirut. Hezbollah has been exchanging fire with Israel since the outbreak of the Israel-Gaza conflict, supporting Hamas. Lebanon's Hezbollah-led health ministry reported 492 deaths, including 35 children and 58 women, with over 1,600 people wounded and thousands displaced.

The attacks marked the deadliest day of cross-border violence since the Israel-Gaza war began. Global powers and Arab states condemned the escalation, calling for both Israel and Hezbollah to de-escalate. However, both sides remained defiant.

"Truth Will Prevail": Siddaramaiah After Court Setback in Land Scam

New Delhi: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah - facing prosecution in the alleged MUDA land scam case - underlined his confidence in the judicial system Tuesday, and slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party's "revenge politics". He declared, "I believe in the law and the Constitution... The truth will finally win."

A combative Chief Minister also labelled the land scam allegations a "sham" and ripped into opposition leaders who, this afternoon, once again demanded he quit. The charges against him and the calls for his resignation, he thundered, were because the BJP had no answer to his welfare schemes.

The Congress has claimed a "conspiracy" against the Karnataka Chief Minister, with Siddaramaiah's deputy, DK Shivakumar, fully backing "my Chief Minister".

justice," the Chief Minister said.

The Chief Minister also indicated - as was widely expected - that he intends to mount further legal challenges to the Governor's sanction. "I will consult with experts on whether such an investigation is allowed under the law or not... I am confident the investigation - under 17A - will be cancelled."

"The leaders asking for my resignation (today) are the same who opposed schemes implemented by me for the poor and oppressed people... the people of Karnataka did not give the BJP majority to come to power on its own, so it has to win power by conducting 'Operation Kamala (Lotus)," he said.

"I have faith in the courts. All MLAs, leaders, and workers of our party, and the Congress leadership have stood by me and encouraged me to continue

Meeting With PM Modi That Donald Trump Announced Did Not Happen

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump had said that he was going to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit here but they did not meet.

PM Modi's brief trip was of about 55 hours packed with activities, while Trump was in the heat of the campaign for an election six weeks away.

The PM was busy on Saturday with the Quad summit with President Joe Biden, and Prime Ministers Anthony Albanese of Australia and Fumio Kishida of Japan. Monday was taken up entirely by PM Modi's address to the Summit of the Future and meetings with some leaders before his flight back.

On Sunday, he addressed the diaspora rally in a New York suburb, and he had some time later in the day for meetings.

PM Modi's brief trip was of about 55 hours packed with activities, while Donald Trump was in the heat of the campaign for an election six weeks away.

But Trump was away holding his own rally in North Carolina.

Later Sunday, PM Modi met with Palestine President Mahmoud Abbas, Nepal's Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli, and Kuwait Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah al-Khalid. There were media speculations about another meeting: Between PM Modi and Mohammad Yunus, the de facto prime Minister of Bangladesh, on the sidelines of the United Nations Summit of the Future.

Some media reports said that PM Modi was snubbing him by refusing to meet. Ultimately it was also a matter of timing. Asked at his news conference about the meeting that wasn't to be, India's Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said, “The Prime Minister is leaving in a few minutes from now. The chief advisor of Bangladesh is not here yet, so there hasn't been any possibility of a meeting on this occasion”.

"Why should I resign? (JDS leader and former Chief Minister) HD Kumaraswamy is on bail. Did he resign? In an inquiry stage, how does resignation arise? We will face them politically..."

India's Gold Demand Drives Global Price Surge

A surge in demand among Indian consumers for gold jewellery and bars, driven by an unprecedentedly large tariff cut and the festival and wedding season, has pushed global bullion prices to a string of fresh highs. The big question now is how long India’s golden bull run will last.

“The quarter of October, November, and December will perhaps be one of the most significant consumption quarters that we have witnessed in a long period of time,” Jain said. "The primary beneficiaries” of the duty cut are “retail consumers,” and “the reduction in customs duty combined with the more beneficial long-term capital gains treatment for gold funds could be an important catalyst for longterm Indian gold demand,” the council says.

"Any person who stores any pornographic material involving a child and fails to report or destroy it is punishable with a fine of not less than five thousand rupees., and repeat offence will be punishable with fine of not less than ten thousand rupees. If the material is stored for further transmitting or propagating, then along with fine, it is punishable with upto three years of imprisonment. For storing child pornographic material for commercial purpose is punishable with three to five years of imprisonment, and in subsequent conviction, upto seven years of imprisonment," the Section says.

Trump suggests he will not run again if he loses election

Former President Donald Trump has said he does not expect to run for election again in 2028 if he is defeated in this November's US presidential poll. Trump, 78, has been the Republican candidate for three national elections in a row and has reshaped the party greatly over the last eight years.

In an interview with Sinclair Media Group, he was asked if he could foresee another run in the event that he loses to Democratic Vice-President Kamala Harris. "No, I don't. I think... that will be it," Trump said. "I don't see that at all."

But he added that "hopefully, we're going to be very successful".

US law bars presidents from serving more than two terms, and so Trump is not expected to run in 2028 if he wins, either.

Kerala-Born Man Linked to Pager Blasts Case

A Kerala-born man, Rinson Jose, now a Norwegian citizen, has been linked to the pager blasts targeting Hezbollah operatives in Lebanon, which killed 12 and injured thousands. Jose, originally from Wayanad, Kerala, owns Norta Global Ltd., a company registered in Sofia, Bulgaria. Initial reports suggested his firm was involved in supplying modified pagers used in the blast.

The pagers, reportedly altered by Mossad to conceal explosives, were linked to a Taiwanese company, Gold Apollo, but were sold by Hungary's BAC Consulting KFT.

Bulgaria's security agency, DANS, initially investigated Norta Global's role but later confirmed no communication

equipment used in the blasts was imported, exported, or manufactured in Bulgaria. They also ruled out Norta Global’s involvement in any terrorism financing.

Norwegian police in Oslo have launched a preliminary investigation. Jose, who migrated to Norway for studies, briefly worked in London before settling in Oslo with his wife. His family expressed confidence in his innocence, stating they have been unable to contact him for days. Jose’s company declared a revenue of $725,000 last year. DN Media, where he worked in customer support, has also been unable to reach him since the incident.

She stood as a finalist among 100 participants in Maharashtra and will now compete against contestants from different states on September 22. Navya’s journey is not just about beauty but about rewriting history, as this year marks the first time that trans women will participate in the pageant – with Navya alongside two other contestants from Chennai and Delhi –competing against cisgender women, making this a powerful moment of inclusivity and representation. “I’m honoured to be part of a platform like the Miss Universe India pageant, which is embracing diversity in such a powerful way. This opportunity is not just a personal milestone but a breakthrough moment for all trans women and the marginalised communities a large. I hope my experience sparks inspiration for others to proudly own their identity, be who they are, and keep pushing forward for the recognition they deserve,” expresses Navya Singh. Navya, who has already made waves on the small screen with her significant role in Colors TV’s Krishna Mohini, where she portrayed Anuradha, a trans woman professor who leaves a lasting impact on the lives of the lead characters Krishna and Mohini, is no stranger

to breaking moulds and defying expectations. Born in Katihar, Bihar, Navya’s rise to fame has been a journey of resilience, courage, and determination – she experienced gender dysphoria as a teenager and in 2011 moved to Mumbai, where she decided to undergo sex reassignment surgery to fully embrace her true identity. Reflecting on Sushmita Sen’s Miss Universe victory 30 years ago in 1994, Navya shares, “Sushmita Sen has always been a guiding light for me. I closely followed her journey from the moment she stepped onto the stage. At just 18, she had her own fears to face, and I’m definitely feeling my share of nerves right now. But each day, I remind myself—if Sushmita, who’s such an icon today, could conquer her fears, so can I. Letting fear win means I’m giving up on myself, and I refuse to let that happen.”

Her journey from Bihar to the glamour and glitz of the fashion world began in 2016 when she made her debut at Lakme Fashion Week as the only trans woman to participate in the event, and since then, she’s never looked back. Walking for top designers like Wendell Rodricks and Archana Kochhar and serving as a showstopper at groundbreaking events like the Bombay Times Fashion Week, Navya has become a symbol of progress and inclusivity, inspiring people across India and beyond.

Cargo Ship Owner Faces Justice Department Lawsuit Following Baltimore Bridge Incident

BALTIMORE, DE

The U.S. Justice Department filed a lawsuit on September 18 against the owner and manager of the cargo ship Dali, which caused the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore earlier this year. The lawsuit, filed in Maryland, seeks over $100 million to cover the government’s costs of clearing underwater debris and reopening the port. The Justice Department alleges that poor maintenance of the ship’s electrical and mechanical systems led to a power loss, causing the Dali to strike a support column of the bridge in March.

Acting Deputy Assistant Attorney General Chetan Patil criticized the ship’s owner, Grace Ocean Private Ltd., and manager, Synergy Marine Group, both based in Singapore, for their “careless and grossly negligent” decisions. The incident not only disrupted commercial traffic at the Port of Baltimore but also

led to the deaths of six road workers on the bridge. These men were working an overnight shift when the bridge collapsed, plunging them into the water.

Attorney General Merrick Garland emphasized that the lawsuit seeks to hold the responsible parties accountable

for the costs of the disaster, ensuring taxpayers aren’t burdened. The victims’ families also announced their intention to pursue claims against the companies responsible. The Dali was en route to Sri Lanka when its power failed, leading to the tragic incident.

Indian Workers Hit Hard by US Tech Layoffs, Visa Limits

WASHINGTON, DC- The U.S. tech industry is grappling with widespread layoffs, particularly impacting Indian H-1B visa holders, amid stricter visa rules and increased fees. Over 438 tech companies have laid off approximately 137,500 workers, creating a difficult job market. H-1B visa holders face the added challenge of finding a new job within a limited timeframe or risk deportation. The U.S. Congressional Research Service notes that Indian workers often face green card backlogs of up to 190 years, exacerbating their precarious situation.

Recent changes in visa regulations have worsened the outlook for many. The fee for H-1B visa applications has skyrocketed by 2150%, from $10 to $215, while the filing fee has increased by 70%. Green card applicants and international students, particularly those on F, M, and J visas, are now subject to additional scrutiny, further complicating their immigration process.

DALLAS, TX- Emily Wilkins, President of the National Press Club (NPC), issued a statement addressing the alleged assault of an Indian journalist by Congress workers in Dallas, Texas, stating the incident may have violated the journalist’s First Amendment rights. First Influenza Vaccine That Does Not Need to be Administered by a Health Care Provider

WASHNGTON, DC- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved FluMist for self- or caregiveradministration, broadening access to the nasal spray flu vaccine. FluMist is designed to prevent influenza caused by virus subtypes A and B in individuals aged 2 through 49. Initially approved in 2003 for people aged 5 to 49, its usage was expanded in 2007 to include children aged 2 to 5. For self-administration, the vaccine will be available through third-party online pharmacies, where customers will undergo screening and eligibility assessments before receiving the vaccine. FluMist’s common side effects include fever in young children, and runny nose or nasal congestion in both children and adults. FBI’s “Take A Beat” Campaign Aims to Protect Citizens from Scams and Fraud

WASHINGTON, DC- The FBI has launched a nationwide campaign to raise public awareness about fraud and scams, emphasizing prevention and reporting. The effort focuses on educating people about various fraudulent schemes and how to protect themselves.A common scam tactic is creating a false sense of urgency or isolation, using emotions like trust or fear to push victims into quick decisions. To counter this, the FBI encourages the public to “Take A Beat”—pause and

assess before acting.

According to FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), fraud has already resulted in $1.6 billion in losses from January to May 2024, an increase of $300 million from the previous year.

Special Agent in Charge Jose A. Perez stressed the FBI’s commitment to pursue fraudsters. The agency urges people to take steps to safeguard personal information, such as verifying unknown sources and being cautious with unsolicited contacts. By increasing public awareness and vigilance, the FBI aims to reduce the success rate of scams and protect more individuals from financial and emotional harm.

Temple Vandalism: Before BAPS incident, many Temples were Targeted in California

NEW YORK, NY- The vandalism of BAPS Swaminarayan Temple in Melville, NY, recently has brought about widespread condemnation from all segments and faiths across the United States. The Consulate General of India in New York called the attack, “unacceptable,” and has raised the matter with the law enforcement for a prompt action against the preparators. The community in Long Island, NY is also rattled with the incident. The Suffolk police are investigating it as a hate crime. According to the U.S. Department of Justice a hate crime is defined as a crime with a motivation for committing the crime based on bias. The BAPS Public Affairs wrote in a post on X that it was deeply saddened by the desecration of the temple, calling it an act aimed at inciting hatred against Hindus. At a time when Indians and Hindus are amongst one of the most influential immigrant groups in America, the incident does raise questions on the security of religious places. Rise in Polio-Like Paralysis Virus Alarms Pennsylvania Health Officials

PENNSYLVANIA — Wastewater data reveals a rise in enterovirus D68, a respiratory illness causing polio-like symptoms, in Pennsylvania and other U.S. states. The nonprofit WastewaterSCAN detected medium levels of D68 in 323 of 429 samples nationwide. Pennsylvania’s DELCORA Regional Treatment Plant in Chester and Capital Region Water in Harrisburg reported medium D68 rates. D68 is primarily found in the South and Northeast, with one confirmed case in Pennsylvania. The virus often causes mild symptoms like sniffles but can lead to acute flaccid myelitis (AFM) in children, a condition causing muscle

weakness and paralysis. AFM cases usually increase in September. This year, there have been 13 confirmed AFM cases among 22 under investigation, per the CDC.

Other states reporting confirmed cases of D68 include California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, and Texas. Health officials are still studying AFM’s connection to D68, as it causes paralysis similar to polio, though the virus is not the same. D68 spreads through respiratory secretions and contaminated surfaces.

The CDC advises regular handwashing and disinfecting surfaces to prevent infection. Common D68 symptoms include fever, cough, muscle pain, and wheezing.

12-Year-Old Boy Arrested for Alleged Threat to Joliet Schools

JOLIET, IL – A 12-year-old boy was arrested this week after allegedly posting a threat on Instagram, indicating harm to students at Joliet area schools.

The Joliet Police Department was alerted at approximately 3:41 p.m. on Monday about a potential threat posted by an unknown source on Instagram. The threat, which suggested harm to students at local schools, was shared multiple times on the platform.

Joliet Police detectives promptly launched an investigation into the post, alongside looking into other recent social media threats targeting Joliet area schools.

Detectives identified the 12-year-old as a suspect and found him at a relative’s home in Joliet. The boy reportedly told

on Social Media

the police that the post was meant as a prank.

A search of the boy’s belongings and bedroom yielded no weapons or contraband. He was taken into custody and charged with felony disorderly conduct for transmitting a threat involving the destruction of school property or violence, death, or bodily

harm against individuals at a school. The boy was released to a family member with a referral to the River Valley Justice Center. Police believe he is a student at Dirksen Junior High.

Authorities are encouraging residents to report any suspicious activity by calling 911 or the Joliet Police Department’s non-emergency line at 815-726-2491.

WASHINGTON, DC- Effective September 10, 2024, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) extended the validity of Permanent Resident Cards (Green Cards) to 36 months for lawful permanent residents who file Form I-90, the Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card. This change applies to individuals renewing expired or expiring Green Cards. Previously, Form I-90 receipt notices provided a 24-month extension. USCIS updated the Form I-90 receipt notices to reflect the new 36-month extension from the expiration date on the current Green Card. As of September 10, amended receipt notices are being issued to individuals with pending Form I-90 applications. These receipt notices, combined with an expired Green Card, serve as proof of lawful permanent resident status and employment authorization. This extension is designed to assist applicants experiencing longer processing times by ensuring they have valid documentation while awaiting their renewed Green Card. If an applicant no longer possesses their Green Card and requires evidence of lawful status, they may request an appointment at a USCIS Field Office through the USCIS Contact Center. During this appointment, an Alien Documentation, Identification, and Telecommunications (ADIT) stamp may be issued after filing Form I-90.

National STEM Education Group Founded by Indian American Students in Dublin

by Raman Arora and Aditya Lagu, Project Catalyst offers free workshops and online courses aimed at empowering underrepresented groups to succeed in STEM fields

DUBLIN, CA — Dublin students Raman

Arora and Aditya Lagu founded Project Catalyst, a national initiative aimed at helping underrepresented groups excel in STEM fields. Both attended Fallon Middle School, though Lagu moved to Georgia while Arora started high school in Dublin. Despite the distance, they remained in contact and recognized that their schools lacked sufficient resources to guide students toward STEM career pathways. “Many schools don’t offer specific engineering or biomedical tracks, leaving students unaware of numerous career options. As a result, many are unprepared to choose majors or plan their careers,” states Project Catalyst’s mission.

In response, they launched Project

Catalyst, which now has branches in the Bay Area, Georgia, and New Jersey. The Bay Area chapter has organized engineering workshops at Fallon Middle School and the Alameda County Library, while the Georgia branch hosted a workshop at Georgia Tech in collaboration with the Bridge to Employment program. They have also partnered with organizations such as TeachStemAfrica, Asante, and Girls Inc. to create new seminars and workshops, and worked with the World Federation of Engineers to offer workshops internationally. Additionally, Project Catalyst provides free online courses through its website, featuring over 50 lessons across 11 units to support students’ learning and exploration of STEM careers.
