Ferrari, Honolulu Hideaway: Top NY Official Accused of Spying for China

Over a period of roughly 14 years, Linda Sun rose through the ranks to become deputy chief of staff to the governor. But according to federal prosecutors, the 41-year-old used her position to aid Chinese officials, including by blocking Taiwanese diplomats from contacting the state government and covertly sharing internal documents with Beijing. In return, China allegedly showered Ms Sun and her husband, Christopher Hu, with millions of dollars in kickbacks that helped them buy a $4.1m (£3.1m) house in New York and perks including special home deliveries of salted duck. They also bought a $2.1m ocean-view condominium in Honolulu, Hawaii, and luxury vehicles including a 2024 Ferrari Roma sports car, according to the indictment.

The couple pleaded not guilty on Tuesday in a Brooklyn federal court to a range of charges, from failing to register as a foreign agent to visa fraud and money laundering.

A top New York state government aide secretly helped the Chinese government access an official call about Covid-19 while enjoying a lavish lifestyle as an undercover agent for Beijing, according to a US indictment.

US law requires that individuals acting for or in the interests of foreign countries or political parties register as foreign agents. In return, Ms Sun and Mr Hu

Trump ordered to stop using Isaac Hayes' music

A US judge has ordered Donald Trump's campaign to stop using the song Hold On, I’m Coming at his rallies, in response to a lawsuit from the family of the song's co-writer, Isaac Hayes.

The Republican presidential nominee regularly plays the song before and after his speeches, including at the Republican National Convention in July. However, Hayes' family have sued Mr Trump's campaign, saying that it repeatedly ignored requests to stop using the song, made famous by soul duo Sam and Dave in 1966.

"received substantial economic and other benefits from [Beijing] representatives”, prosecutors say. The gifts included allexpenses-paid travel to China; tickets to top shows, concerts and sporting events; employment in China for Ms Sun's cousin; and home deliveries of Nanjingstyle salted ducks prepared by a Chinese government official's personal chef.

US charges Hamas leaders over 7 October attack on Israel

The US has charged Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and several other prominent figures in the Palestinian group in connection with its deadly attack in Israel on 7 October last year.

The justice department said it was indicting six Hamas members with seven charges, including the murder of dozens of US citizens, conspiracy to finance terrorism and use of weapons of mass destruction.

The criminal complaint covers decades of alleged attacks by Hamas, as well as

last October's unprecedented assault. It is the first step by US law enforcement to hold accountable the ringleaders of that attack, but has been seen by analysts as partly symbolic, not least because some of those named in the indictment are already dead.

Meanwhile, Sinwar is believed to be hiding in tunnels somewhere under Gaza. In a video statement on Tuesday, US Attorney General Merrick Garland said the defendants were responsible for "financing and directing a decades-long campaign to murder American citizens and endanger the security of the United States". The group also "led Hamas's efforts to destroy the state of Israel and murder civilians in support of that aim", Mr Garland said. He highlighted the 7 October attack on Israel by Hamas, in which the group "murdered entire families" in "the deadliest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust".

Boy, 11, fatally shoots US former

mayor and daughter

Joe Cornelius Sr was well known in the community

Police in Louisiana have arrested an 11-year-old boy who is accused of fatally shooting the city's former mayor and his daughter.

Joe Cornelius Sr, 82, and his daughter, 31-year-old Keisha Miles, were found inside a home with multiple gunshot wounds around 6:30 am local time (11:30 GMT) on Sunday.

Police have not named the boy, who they said is a "relative or family member" of the victims.

US seizes Venezuelan President Maduro's plane

The US has seized a plane belonging to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, claiming it was bought illegally for $13m (£9.8m) and smuggled out of the country.

According to the US justice department, the Falcon 900EX aircraft was seized in the Dominican Republic and transferred to the US state of Florida. It is unclear how and when the plane ended up in the Dominican Republic. Tracking data showed it leaving La Isabela airport near the capital Santo Domingo on Monday, arriving at Fort Lauderdale airport in Florida soon after.

US man sentenced for 12,000 harassing calls to lawmakers

A US man has been sentenced to 13 months in prison for making over 12,000 harassing and threatening calls to the offices of congressional lawmakers.

Ade Salim Lilly, 35, pleaded guilty in May, admitting to the court that he made the calls between February 2022 and November 2023.

He tried to contact some 54 members of Congress, both at their district offices and at their offices in Washington DC. He threatened to kill at least one staff member.

The federal judge overseeing Lilly's case also sentenced him to three years of supervised release after he completes his prison term.

Over the course of two days in February 2023, Lilly called one lawmaker more than 500 times.

Most of his interactions were with congressional staff or interns, officials said.

In one call, he threatened a staff member: "I will kill

you, I am going to run you over, I will kill you with a bomb or grenade."

Lilly, a resident of Queens, New York, was arrested in November 2023 after moving to Puerto Rico.

Capitol Police Chief J Thomas Manger testified to the court last year that the harassment campaign coincided with a 400% increase in threats against lawmakers in

Congress over the past six years.

Lilly pleaded guilty in May to interstate communications with a threat to kidnap or injure and making repeated telephone calls.

Prosecutors had sought a sentence of 18 months, writing in a sentencing memo that the current election cycle creates a risk that such threats could become "normalised".

On Tuesday, Chief Manger, whose force protects members of Congress and the Capitol, released a statement saying: "We will enforce the law anytime someone crosses the line from free speech to harassment or threats."

Lilly's motive and ideology are unclear, according to public records.

Addressing the court during his sentencing on Tuesday, he said: “My intent was always to do what’s best for our future generations.”

China hits back at Canada EV tariffs with canola probe

China has announced a probe of Canadian canola imports, escalating a trade fight between the two countries. The move, which could lead to tariffs on a key Canadian export, came a week after Canada said it would impose new border taxes on Chinese-made electric vehicles, steel and aluminium.

Beijing also said it would file a complaint with the World Trade Organization over the EV tariffs, which it criticised as "discriminatory" and "unilateral".

More than 100 killed in failed DR Congo jailbreak

An attempt by inmates to break out of a high-security prison in the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kinshasa, has led to the deaths of 129 people, the authorities say.

Interior Minister Jacquemain Shabani said that 24 prisoners had died of bullet wounds after warning shots were fired in the early hours of Monday morning. Most of the others died from suffocation as a result of a crush during the breakout at Makala Prison. Despite reports of mass casualties emerging on Monday, the government had initially said that only two people had died. Seven years ago, at least 4,000 inmates escaped from the same prison - the country's largest.

The new Chancery of the Indian High Commission in Brunei was launched by Prime Minister Modi to a rousing welcome by members of the Indian

community. The new facility, which has come up at the Jalan Duta Diplomatic Enclave, is adjacent to the US Embassy in Bandar Seri Begawan.

Ukraine says soldiers among 51 killed in Poltava missile attack

At least 51 people have been killed and 271 others injured in a Russian missile strike on the city of Poltava, in central Ukraine.

A military academy and a nearby hospital were hit. Ukraine's land forces confirmed that military personnel were killed in the attack.

People did not have enough time to get to bomb shelters after the air raid alarm sounded, Ukraine's ministry of

defence said.

President Volodymyr Zelensky promised that what he called "Russian scum" would pay for the attack, and repeated calls for more air defences so that Ukraine could protect itself by carrying out its own long-range missile attacks. Moscow has not commented on the attack.

People nearby told us their windows were blown out by the force of the impact.

We met 26-year-old Mykyta Petrov, a cadet who only started at the Poltava Military Communications Institute two weeks ago.

He described the moment the attack unfolded just after 09:00 local time on Tuesday morning (06:00 GMT), saying the second missile hit just three seconds after the first.

'Chinese spy mayor' wanted by Philippines arrested

Alice Guo left the Philippines and travelled to Malaysia and Singapore before her arrest in Indonesia

A former Philippine mayor who was on the run for weeks after being accused of spying for China has been arrested in Indonesia.

Philippine authorities have been pursuing Alice Guo across four countries even since she disappeared in July following an investigation into her alleged criminal activities.

She has been accused of protecting online casinos, which were a front for scam centres and human trafficking syndicates in her sleepy pig farming town, Bamban.

Ms Guo denies the allegations. Philippine officials said they were co-ordinating with their Indonesian counterparts for her return to the Philippines "at the soonest possible time".

The number of shoots and branches is constantly growing. Making this possible are human interactions and stimulation. It’s like serve-and-volley: A child smiles and you smile back or a child talks and you reply. It’s a constant dyadic interaction that enhances nerve connections within the brain.

In total, 10 of the dead were female and two were male, according to the local prosecutor's office.

More than 50 people were rescued off Cape Gris-Nez, near Boulogne-sur-Mer, the French coast guard reports. Two are said to be in critical condition. Officials say the boat was overloaded and that its bottom "ripped open", while fewer than eight people on board were wearing life jackets.

The disaster is the deadliest loss of life in the Channel this year. One source suggested a Syrian smuggler might have been involved. Local prosecutor Guirec Le Bras said officials believed the victims had been "primarily of Eritrean origin" though they could not yet "specify the exact nationalities".

The court said it cannot ask the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to issue a certificate to the film's makers as it would contradict a Madhya Pradesh High Court order. The movie is co-produced by Ms Ranaut's Manikarnika Films and Zee Studios. With the film's earlier scheduled for a release on September 6, Zee Entertainment Enterprises approached the Bombay High Court, seeking a direction to the Censor Board to issue the certificate that would clear the decks for the film's release.

Jasveen Sangha – Meet LA’s Indian-origin Ketamine Queen

The Woman who Illegally Supplied Drugs to Dead Actor Mathew Perry

She is known as the Ketamine Queen in the dark circles of drug dealing in Los Angeles. Jasveen Sangha, a 41-year-old Indian-origin woman known for her fashion and living a luxurious life in the posh circles of LA is under the storm for her alleged role in one of the most high-profile cases of drug overdose.

When Mathew Perry, the famous actor known for his legendary role in sitcom Friends, died last year, a pall of gloom fell not only around the world but also in India, where he enjoyed a great fandom. However, this is not the kind of twist that most Indian-origin fans of the late star were hoping to see in the tragedy.

Amongst the people charged with illegally supplying Ketamine to the actor is also a woman named Jasveen Sangha. Perry died due to an overdose of Ketamine.

An alleged drug dealer Sangha now faces a trial along with another accused Dr Salvadore Plansancia. Both of the accused have pleaded not guilty. Sangha is charged with distributing Ketamine to the actor just weeks before he died in October last year. Reportedly when Sangha found out about Perry’s death she asked a co-conspirator to delete any digital evidence and wrote “delete all our messages.” Sangha could face life-sentence over Perry’s death.

How MBA Grad Jasveen Sangha Became Matthew Perry’s Alleged 'Ketamine Queen'

Growing up in the upscale Los Angeles suburb of Calabasas, home to celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Will Smith, Jasveen Sangha seemed destined for success. Described as "meticulous and studious" in high school, she attended the University of California, Irvine, before earning an MBA from Hult Business School in London. However, her life took a dramatic turn when she was arrested in March, with her mother posting a $100,000 bond. Sangha, now 41, is accused of being a "large volume drug dealer" and allegedly selling a lethal dose of ketamine to "Friends" star Matthew Perry. According to friends, Sangha changed significantly after returning to Los Angeles post-MBA.

She reportedly underwent cosmetic procedures and struggled to find her place, eventually trying her hand at various ventures, including a failed nail salon and party promotion. By 2015, she was hanging out with a high-profile crowd, including Perla Hudson, ex-wife of Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash, and was often seen at exclusive events. Sangha's lifestyle included heavy partying, where drugs were a common presence.

Friends believe her entry into the drug world was fueled by loneliness and a desire for companionship. She reportedly had access to liquid ketamine, which led to her involvement in drug dealing. A lawyer for Sangha declined to comment on the case, but former federal prosecutor Neama Rahmani noted that she could potentially face life in prison.

Private Jets, Expensive Cars, Luxe Fashion –Jasveen Sangha and her High Life

Sangha is well-known in North Hollywood as the celebrity drug dealer. Sangha gives a glimpse of her jet-setting, luxurious life through her Instagram. Just before her arrest by LA police she was busy posting about her new haircut on Instagram. She also regularly posts pictures of her luxury vacations at the most expensive destination on her social media. From having caviar at private jet lounges in airports to flaunting her Chanel and LVs, Sangha also displays her unapologetic wealthy life while showing her beachfront residence and stays at uber-luxe hotels like Tokyo’s Mandarin Oriental Hotel recently.

According to reports during a raid at her place earlier this year, the investigators found a ‘drug emporium,’ at her home.

According to the indictment, 25 vials of ketamine were bought from Sangha on October 24 to be given to Perry. Sangha included ketamine lollipops as an 'add on' for his large ketamine order.'

Indian American Artist Designs One of the US's Most Stunning Airports Janavi Mahimtura Folmsbee

Next time, when you are traveling through Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport, do stop by to marvel at the beautiful art corridor connecting two international terminals at the airport.

“The Aquarius Art Tunnel,” is a two hundred and forty feet long, 9 feet high and 22 feet wide artistic masterpiece that makes you feel as if you are underwater in the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary. The structure complete with a floor-to-ceiling mural, filtered lighting, an original soundtrack and augmented reality is perhaps a oneof-its kind art installation in the country and certainly one of the only created by an Indian-origin artist. No wonder that this Bush airport installation became the first-ever recipient of the World’s Best Art in the Airport award by Skytrax. Not only this, but another feather to Janavi’s cap also comes in the form of The United Nations Decades of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (UNDOS), through UNESCO endorsing The Aquarius Art Tunnel. Janavi Mahimtura studied art at the prestigious School

About the Art Tunnel

of the Art Institute of Chicago (S.A.I.C) located in the heart of downtown Chicago. And it is here in Chi City that a lot of her creative ideas about art in public spaces and the culture of public art in America blossomed.

A Mumbai-girl at heart, a Chicagoan in spirit and now at home in Houston, Mrs Mahimtura Folmsbee shares with Hi India everything from growing up in India to studying and settling in America and most of all showcasing her roots through the medium of art across the world.

A Water Baby Janavi hails from the bustling city of Mumbai in India. The city, a paradox in itself -- densely packed with over 12 million in population, the everbusy financial capital of India, the buzzing Bollywood brigade and yet also home to the vast placid shoreline of the Arabia Sea and a deep natural harbor.

The artist formed a deep connection to water as she tells us that she grew up in a house overlooking the Indian Ocean. Her nearness to sea and childhood trips to Lakshadweep with its beautiful white sand beaches were instrumental in making her interested in marine life from the very beginning. Janavi began scuba diving over 14 years ago and has completed over 260 dives and counting.

Janavi is well-recognized for her work – The Aquarius Art Tunnel. In this unique piece of art, the artist has used a range of sea creatures such as fish, dolphins, coral, shark and octopus. Janavi explains that the title of the work “Aquarius” can be broken down and is a homage to constellation Aquarius. She says, “Aqua” represents water, “ri” is taken from the Hindi word “Hamari” which means ours” and finally “us.”

The awards are already coming and recently Mrs Mahimtura Folmsbee was honored with the “People’s Choice” prize from Codaworx: Collaboration of Design + Art. First Female South Asian Artist to be at Houston Airport Having her art installation at the Houston airport is of special significance to Janavi Mahimtura Folmsbee. Houston is one of the most diverse cities in the US and is also home to over 150,000 Indian Americans – making it one of the top cities in the US with a sizable Indian population. Also, says Mrs Mahimtura Folmsbee, “This is the place where I and countless Indians in America take their flight home to India.” With this feat Janavi has become the first ever female South Asian artist to be featured at the Houston Airport – an honor she very humbly receives with a promise to continue bringing India and her love for marine life on the world stage.

Removal of Babar Azam from Captaincy, Divided Team": Ex-Pakistan Star Rants as Team Struggles

Joe Root Sets Record with 34 Test Hundreds for England

Batter Joe Root surpassed Alastair Cook on Saturday to become the player with the highest number of Test centuries for England with 34 on day three of the second Test against Sri Lanka. This was his second century in the same match with the player scoring 102 in the second innings which followed his first innings’ knock of 143. England were all out for 251 in their second innings at Lord’s, setting the visitors a huge target of 483 to win the second test and level the three-match series.

Gavaskar Predicts 3-1 India Win in BorderGavaskar Trophy

Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar predicted India to win the series once again with a scoreline of 3-1. “It’s going to be an exciting series for sure with the talent that is there on both sides and it will also show why Test match cricket is the ultimate format of our beloved game. Oh, and my prediction is a 3-1 win for India,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for the mid-day.

The Pakistan cricket team hit one of its lowest points in cricketing history, losing at home to Bangladesh in the 2-match Test series. Pakistan were swept aside by the tourists who produced one of their most memorable triumphs of all time. Though there remain a few personnel in the Pakistan team who have been drawing fans and experts' ire, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) hasn't been immune from criticism either. In fact, former Pakistan star Rashid Latif feels it's the Pakistan Board and its recent chairmen who deserve the most blame.

"Jitne bhi chairman aaye hain, woh tabah kar rahe hain last four years se (whoever became the chairman in the last four years has demolished Pakistan cricket)," Latif said on his show 'Caught Behind'.

"Who brought him (Shan Masood) as (Test) captain? Who removed Babar

Azam (from captaincy)? Who divided the Pakistan team?" Latif questioned in his rant against the PCB. "So what is he doing at this juncture? Giving interviews?".

The PCB's long-term vision has also been questioned by many, especially with regards to the recent captaincy changes. Babar Azam was removed as skipper from all formats, before being reinstated as the white-ball skipper.

Latif also targeted former PCB chief Zaka Ashraf who had replaced Babar Azam with Shaheen Afridi as the team's T20I and ODI skipper.

"Team banana kis ka kaam hai. Zaka Ashraf ka ya Misbah ka? (whose responsibility is it to make the team - Ashraf or Misbah's)" said Latif, questioning the role of Misbah-ul-Haq who served as an advisor to Ashraf and also headed a cricket committee.

"My Father Has Mental Issue": Yuvraj Singh's Old

In the light of Yuvraj Singh's father Yograj Singh's heated attack on legendary India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, another interesting video has resurfaced online. In this video, Yuvraj Singh can be seen admitting that his father has a "mental issue". Yuvraj's father Yograj has made critical comments about MS Dhoni, and went one step further recently, when he stated that he would not "forgive" Dhoni for what the latter had done to his son.

Comment Viral

Now, Yuvraj's comment has gone viral on social media. In a clip taken from a podcast run by social media influencer Ranveer Allahbadia, Yuvraj admits that his father may have some mental issues. "I feel that my father has a mental issue, but he just won't accept it," said Yuvraj, in the podcast episode released on November 4, 2023.

While Yuvraj admitted that his father has been successful in his life, he does not accept certain things. "I feel that there are some things he needs to address, but he just doesn't accept it," Yuvraj added. Yuvraj and Dhoni had been teammates for over a decade in India colours, and at one point, Yuvraj had served as vice-captain to Dhoni. However, a point of contention often arises from the fact that Dhoni had been given the captaincy after Rahul Dravid in 2007, despite Yuvraj being the vicecaptain to Dravid as well.

Who is Nitesh Kumar

Badminton player who won gold medal at Paris Paralympics

Nitesh Kumar wins gold medal: Nitesh Kumar, a para badminton player from Charkhi Dadri, Haryana, claimed India’s second gold medal at the Paris Paralympics on Monday in Para badminton, after beating Great Britain’s Daniel Bethell in the final of men’s singles SL3 category. SL3 class players, like Nitesh, compete with more severe lower limb disabilities, requiring play on a half-width court.

The 29-year-old Nitesh, who overcame permanent leg damage from a 2009 accident, showed his dominance with a (result) win over Bethell in the final. The IIT Mandi graduate thus ensured that India return with a medal from the SL3 category, after Pramod Bhagat clinched the gold when para badminton made its debut three years ago in Tokyo.

Nitesh’s journey

Growing up Nitesh’s first love was football. However, a tragic accident in Vizag in 2009 shattered his aspirations, leaving him bedridden for months and with permanent leg damage. Despite this setback, Nitesh’s love for sports remained unwavering.

During his time at IIT-Mandi, Nitesh discovered a newfound passion for badminton. He honed his skills on the court, often challenging able-bodied.

With the Pakistan national team under scanner owing to recent performances, former PCB chief selector Mohammad Wasim opened up on his relationship with former Test captain Babar Azam, and a 'plagued' dressing room culture.

certain calls. He was not ready to accept changes.”

Wasim added that the dressing room atmosphere was plagued by certain players, whom he tried to remove in his capacity as chief selector but to no avail. “I will not take names, but four coaches said that a group of players is cancer to the team. If they are part of the squad, Pakistan can’t win. I tried to remove them from the team, but the team management recalled them,” he said.

In 2016, Nitesh seized the opportunity to represent Haryana at the Para Nationals in Faridabad. His impressive debut earned him a bronze medal, showcasing his immense potential. The following year, he continued his success, clinching silver in singles and bronze in doubles at the national championships.

Nitesh’s crowning moment came in 2020, when he defeated Tokyo Paralympic medalists Pramod and Manoj to secure the gold medal at the National Championship. His dominance on the domestic tournament cemented his position as one of India’s leading para-badminton athletes. Beyond national accolades, Nitesh has also excelled on the international stage, winning medals in various tournaments. Now he has bagged one on his Paralympic debut.

Embrace Fitness My Way: It’s All About Common Sense

Health and fitness often come with hefty gym memberships, fad diets, and complicated routines, Milind Soman offers a refreshing take: fitness doesn’t require a gym, just common sense. The celebrated fitness icon, who has made headlines not just for his modeling career but also for his incredible feats of endurance, believes in keeping things simple. His mantra? Move your body in ways that make sense, and stay consistent.

Health: The Simplicity We Overlook

Health is often overcomplicated. We’re bombarded with tips, tricks, and “magic” solutions to get fit fast. But the truth is, maintaining health doesn’t have to be rocket science. Our bodies are designed to move, and movement is essential to staying fit. Instead of getting lost in the maze of fitness gadgets and trends, sometimes the best approach is to go back to basics.

Milind Soman’s Fitness Philosophy

Milind Soman’s approach to fitness is grounded in practicality. Here are the key pointers from his philosophy:

• No Gym Required: According to Soman, you don’t need fancy equipment or a gym membership to stay fit. His workouts often involve simple, bodyweight exercises like push-ups, squats, and planks. And guess what? They work.

• Consistency Over Intensity: nstead of grueling, high-intensity workouts that leave you exhausted, Soman advocates for consistent, moderate exercise. A 30-minute walk every day beats an intense workout that you can’t maintain.

• Use Your Surroundings: Milind emphasizes using everyday objects for fitness. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, walk whenever possible, and engage in activities that keep you moving throughout the day. Fitness doesn’t have to be a separate event; it can be woven into your daily routine.

• Listen to Your Body: One of the most critical aspects of Soman’s approach is understanding your body’s needs. Not every workout is for everyone, and it’s essential to find what works for you. And if your body says “I’m tired,” maybe it’s time to listen and rest.

The 240km Run: Because Why Not?

Speaking of rest, Milind Soman’s idea of “taking it easy” might be different from ours. After all, this is the man who casually ran 240 kilometers over five days from Mumbai to Gujarat at the age of 54. Yes, you read that right—240 kilometers. This feat wasn’t just about physical endurance but also a testament to his mental resilience and the power of a disciplined lifestyle.

Soman’s long-distance runs are a perfect example of his philosophy in action. It’s not about pushing yourself to the extreme but about being consistent, determined, and mindful of your body’s capabilities. And let’s be honest, most of us would be winded after a brisk walk to the fridge, let alone a 240-kilometer run.

Milind Soman: The Epitome of Ageless Fitness

Milind Soman isn’t just a fitness icon; he’s a living, breathing example of how simplicity and consistency can lead to extraordinary results. At an age when many start to slow down, Soman is running marathons, climbing mountains, and doing push-ups like a pro. His secret? Staying active, eating clean, and most importantly, having a positive attitude.

Get Moving, No Excuses!

So, if you’re waiting for the perfect time to start your fitness journey or hoping for a miracle workout that requires zero effort, here’s the truth: it’s not going to happen. Take a page out of Milind Soman’s book—start small, stay consistent, and use your common sense. Fitness isn’t about perfection; it’s about progress. And remember, you don’t need a gym to get fit; you just need to start moving. After all, even the longest journey begins with a single step—or in Milind’s case, 240 kilometers.

New Delhi: Netflix India has assured Centre that in the future, content will be in accordance with "nation's sentiments", sources have said. The OTT giant's assurance comes at the back of a row involving its web series 'IC 814 Kandahar Hijack'.

The series, which revisits the 1999 hijacking of an Indian Airlines flight by Pakistan-based terror outfit Harkat-ul-Mujahideen, has triggered a fierce backlash, culminating in an hour-long meeting between the streaming giant and the Centre.

Directed by Anubhav Sinha and released on August 29, it portrays the hijackers of the ill-fated flight in a manner that has drawn ire from various quarters, particularly due to the alleged alteration of their names to "Bhola" and "Shankar," traditionally associated with Lord Shiva. This depiction has been perceived as a distortion of historical facts, with critics arguing that it misrepresents the real identities of the terrorists, thereby offending Hindu sentiments. JP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya accused the filmmakers of furthering an agenda to whitewash the crimes of Pakistani terrorists by giving them Hindu names, thereby misleading future generations.

Netanyahu Not Doing Enough to Free Gaza Hostages: Biden

Joe Biden has said Benjamin Netanyahu is not doing enough to secure a hostage deal and ceasefire with Hamas, amid reports suggesting a new proposal would be sent to the Israeli prime minister as "final". The US president and Kamala Harris, his vice-president, met negotiators in the Situation Room to hammer out a proposal, as protests engulfed Israel on Monday over the weekend deaths of six hostages in Gaza.

Rahul Gandhi Urges Party To Consider Alliance In Haryana

Elections in Haryana are just a month away and preparations by political parties are in full swing. Amid the poll countdown, a big question is doing the rounds in political circles -- will the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) continue their alliance from the Lok Sabha polls?

In an interview a week back, former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said there have been no talks on an alliance between the two parties. "The alliance we had was at the national level. We have not spoken to them. Here the fight is between BJP and Congress," he said. In the Lok Sabha election earlier this year, the Congress managed to win five seats in Haryana -- a big improvement from 2019 when the BJP won the state's all 10 seats. Not Launched by Tradition Varun Dhawan

Actor Varun Dhawan on Friday said his father David Dhawan didn't direct his debut film as it is not a tradition in his family to launch family members. r with Karan Johar's 2012 movie "Student of the Year", attended the launch event of his niece Anjini Dhawan’s debut film “Binny And Family”.

"She is my niece but I am here as sort of an elder brother... It is a good film that is why I am here. Like my father never launched me because that tradition is not there in my family, he doesn’t believe in that. We have no hand in what she has done and it will be wrong for me to take credit for any of her success.

"Genuinely, she has done it on her own and I am very proud of her that she has done this journey,” Dhawan told reporters here.

Helmed by Ssanjay Tripaathy, “Binny And Family” is a family drama exploring the relationship and complexity between three generations. Anjini plays the titular role of Binny. Dhawan said he hopes that people shower love and praise on Anjini, just like he and his father received from the audiences over the years.

"It's an emotional day for me because my uncle Anil Dhawan is a big reason why I'm in the movies. No matter how much I speak, she's backed up this film... She was not cast because of me or my daddy,” he added.

Dhawan said people from his niece's generation are smart and don’t live in a bubble.

"They know life is difficult. While I was growing up, everyone was telling me the life ahead won't be easy but this generation knows already and they are ready to work towards it. So, I think this generation is teaching us something,” he said. About her debut movie, Anjini said she felt it was a right story for her as she was very close to her grandparents.

“I've had a very close relationship with my grandparents. They're way cooler and modern than my parents. I was really close to my Nana growing up. I lost him just a year before I heard the script. I was in a place where I was not doing so well emotionally.

"And Sanjay sir has written this story with all heart, honesty and a whole lot of emotion. And when I heard it for the first time, nothing felt so right. I felt like it was a sign... It's not the most common topic in films today. I felt it was sent to me from him and it just felt really right,” she added.

Ranbir Kapoor 'Serial Skirt Chaser' : Kangana

Actor Kangana Ranaut has defended her controversial social media post from 2020, in which she had called actor Ranbir Kapoor a “serial skirt chaser.” Not mincing her words, the actor-BJP MP backed her statement against Ranbir in a recent interview. The two have never worked together on a project, but Kangana has routinely thrown shade at him, especially for his perceived nepotistic privileges in the industry.

In the trailer of the latest episode of Aap Ki Adalat, Kangana engaged in a conversation about her many past controversies with journalist Rajat Sharma, who asked her to comment about calling Ranbir a “serial skirt chaser.” Kangana let out a laugh, and said, “Aap aise bol rahe hai jaise wo Swami Vivekanand ho (you’re talking as if he is Swami Vivekanand).”

In her tweet in August 2020, she had claimed that the Hindi industry reserves namecalling only for “extra ordinary outsiders who come from small towns and humble families” and had said, “Ranbir Kapoor is a serial skirt chaser but no one dare call him a rapist. Deepika is a self-proclaimed mental illnesses patient but no one calls her a psycho or a witch.” The promo shows the anchor talking about her comments calling Karan Johar “Chacha Chaudhary,” to which Kangana replies that she never launched the first attack.

Challenges Audience Perceptions

Actor Ananya Panday is set to make her web series debut with Call Me Bae, premiering on Prime Video on September 6. Directed by Collin D'Cunha and created by Ishita Moitra, the series follows Bae, a privileged young woman in New Delhi, who is disowned by her family. The eight-episode series offers Panday a "dream role" with a rich character arc and a significant message. Panday, who debuted in 2019 with Student of the Year 2, is eager to break free from her perceived image in the industry. She acknowledges the challenge of "fighting perception," both from the audience and within the industry. According to her, it's crucial to say no to roles that reinforce stereotypes, even if it means missing out on big opportunities. This

approach, she believes, fosters growth as an actor. Panday also spoke about the excitement of exploring the long-format storytelling that OTT platforms offer. She found the light-hearted nature of Call Me Bae refreshing after working on more intense projects like Vikramaditya Motwane's CTRL and Kho Gaye Hum Kahan. Despite the challenges of stepping into a comedic role for the first time, Panday relished the opportunity to explore her character in depth over multiple episodes. She also noted the differences between her and Bae, a billionaire fashionista, emphasizing that she had to work hard to authentically portray someone so different from herself.

Kerala police have registered at least 17 cases over sexual assault allegations in the Malayalam film industry. This includes a rape case against actor Siddique based on a complaint lodged by a young actress.

On Sunday, Siddique had resigned as AMMA Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) general secretary a day after she alleged that Siddique had sexually assaulted and locked her in a hotel room when she was 21.

Los Angeles: (IANS) 'The Apprentice', the controversial biographical drama film about young Donald Trump, the former US president and the 2024 Republican presidential nominee, will hit US and Canadian theatres in October, weeks before the presidential election in November, according to media reports. The film bowed in competition at Cannes and immediately stoked controversy, according to the Los Angeles Times. After the film's unveiling, Trump campaign communications director Steven Cheung blasted it as "garbage" and "pure fiction" and vowed to file a lawsuit against the filmmakers in an effort to derail its release, reported the newspaper.

Film Kangana on 'Emergency'

Ready to Go to Court to Protect My

Actress-filmmaker Kangana Ranaut says the censor board has not given the certificate to her for the upcoming movie “Emergency” and hopes that it comes on time otherwise she is determined to fight for it and go to court for her movie. Talking about the film getting released on September 6, Kangana told IANS: “Hopefully. My film got cleared from the censor. And the day we were about to get the certificate, a lot of people did a lot of drama.”

She feels that the censor board has “become very hesitant.” “There are a lot of issues with the censor as well. So I hope it gets released. "How Can House Be Demolished Because..." Top Court On 'Bulldozer Justice'

The Supreme Court today came down heavily on 'bulldozer justice', questioning how a house can be demolished just because it belongs to an accused or even a convict in a criminal case. The court also proposed a set of pan-India guidelines to be followed before demolishing homes.

Appearing for the petitioner, Senior Advocate Dushyant Dave sought a direction from the court to ensure that 'bulldozer justice' is not meted out across the country.

Addressing the bench of Justice BR Gavai and Justice KV Viswanathan, Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta submitted that no immovable property cannot be demolished just because the accused is involved in a criminal offence. "Such demolition can only happen if the structure is illegal," Mr Mehta said. The Solicitor General, however, argued that the matter is being misrepresented

Netflix India's Head Of Content Summoned Over 'IC 814' Web Series Row

New Delhi: The content head of Netflix India has been summoned by the government amid the massive controversy surrounding 'IC 814 - The Kandahar Hijack', a webseries on the 1999 hijacking of an Indian Airlines flight by Pakistan-based terror outfit

Harkat-ul-Mujahideen, sources have said.

The Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry's summons to Netflix India chief Monika Shergill comes after hundreds of social media users accused the makers of the web series of deliberately changing the names of the hijackers to "Bhola" and "Shankar". MS Dhoni Will "Never Be

Forgiven": Yuvraj Singh's Father Yograj's Fierce Rant

Yograj Singh, father of former India cricketer Yuvraj Singh, has lashed out at MS Dhoni once again. Yograj, who has himself played for India having made 7 appearances in the past at the highest level, keeps criticising former India captain Dhoni on the public platform, accusing him of destroying his son Yuvraj career. In his fresh attack on Dhoni, Yograj has said that Dhoni will never be forgiven in life. The comment from Yograj has gone viral on social media.

"I won't forgive MS Dhoni. He should

look at his face in the mirror. He is a very big cricketer, but what he has done against my son, everything is coming out now; it can never be forgiven in life. I have never done two things in life - first, I have never forgiven anybody who has done wrong for me, and second, I have never hugged them in my life, be it my family members or my kids," Yograj said while talking to Zee Switch YouTube channel. This isn't the first time that Yograj has taken a direct swipe at Dhoni. Earlier this year, the 66-year-old had claimed that CSK lost IPL 2024 because of Dhoni's bad deeds. He also accused Dhoni of being "jealous" of Yuvraj. "CSK lost IPL 2024. Why did they lose? It's whatever you sow, so shall you reap. Yuvraj Singh is the ICC Ambassador, hats off to him! And this jealous Dhoni, where is he? He didn't even shake hands with Yuvraj, and that is the reason why CSK failed this year," Yograj had claimed in a viral video. Meanwhile, Dhoni announced his retirment from international cricket in August 2020.

Mohanlal Backs Probe into Mollywood Harassment Claims

"Many people are involved in it. But everyone cannot be blamed for this. Those responsible will be punished, investigation is going on," Mohanlal said.

New Delhi: Actor Mohanlal today lauded the government for releaseing the Justice Hema Committee report, which details allegations of sexual harassment in the Malayalam film industry. The former Association of Malayalam Movie Actors (AMMA) president's remarks come in the light of an avalanche of sexual assault and rape allegations against some of Mollywood's biggest names, including veteran actor Siddique and filmmaker Ranjith Balakrishnan. "We welcome the Hema Committee report. It was the right decision by the government to release that report. AMMA cannot answer all the questions. These questions should be asked from everyone. This is a very hardworking industry. Many people are involved in it. But everyone cannot be blamed for this. Those responsible will be punished, investigation is going on," the actor said.

The 64-year-old resigned from his post at the AMMA last month after the allegations surfaced, and was criticised by many for not staying in power and ensuring that the victims get justice.

US Millionaire, Who Died By Suicide, Owed $34 Million With $8,000 In Bank

Despite being in secret debt, Brandon Miller and his influencer wife, Candace, were known for flaunting his high-profile lifestyle on social media.

A high-profile New York real estate developer, who died by suicide last month, was almost $34 million in debt and had just $8,000 in his bank account. Despite being in secret debt, Brandon Miller and his influencer wife, Candace, were known for flaunting his high-profile lifestyle on social media. A report in The Real Deal highlighted that Brandon Miller, 43, was in more dire financial straits than was initially thought at the time of his death on July 3. On his wife's now-defunct lifestyle blog 'Mama + Tata,' Miller often showcased a fairy-tale lifestyle, portraying himself as a lucky head of an idyllic upper-crust family, The New York Post reported. However, new facts reveal the family was living way beyond their means in reality and was in massive debt. According to a bond petition filed by Candice in a surrogate's court, around $11.5 million of Miller's debt was from mortgages on his Hamptons estate. The property at 25 Cobb Isle Road in the Water Mill was put on the market at an asking price of $15.5 million earlier this month. The family had four outstanding loans on the property. This includes $800,000 from lender Titan Capital, who earlier sued Candice Miller over missed mortgage payments.

film, she had seen men watching clips of actresses captured using hidden cameras in their caravans.

"My heart is filled with so much pain. Even today, I cry when I think about how that one encounter destroyed my life."

The year was 1992. Sushma* said she was 18 when a man she knew took her to an abandoned warehouse under the pretext of watching video tapes. There, six to seven men tied her up, raped her and took photographs of the act.

The men belonged to rich, influential families in Ajmer, a city in the western Indian state of Rajasthan.

"After they raped me, one of them gave me 200 rupees [$2; £1] to buy lipstick. I didn't take the money," she said.

Last week, 32 years later, Sushma saw a court convict her rapists and sentence them to life imprisonment.

"I am 50 years old today and I finally feel like I got justice," she said. "But it cannot bring back all that I have lost."

She said she had endured years of slander and taunts from society because of what happened to her, and both her marriages ended in divorce when her husbands discovered her past.

Sushma is one of 16 victims - all schoolchildren or students - who were raped and blackmailed by a group of powerful men in different places in Ajmer city over several months in 1992. The case became a massive scandal and sparked huge protests.

Last week, the court handed out life sentences to six of the 18 accused: Nafis Chishty, Iqbal Bhat, Saleem Chishty, Sayed Jamir Hussain, Naseem - also known as Tarzan - and Suhail Ghani. They have not confessed to the crime and their lawyers said they will appeal the verdict in a higher court.

and the others had their sentences reduced to 10 years.

Of the remaining four, one died by suicide. Another was sentenced to life in 2007 but was acquitted six years later. One was convicted in a related minor case but later acquitted, and one of the accused is still absconding.

"Can you even call this [the 20 August verdict] justice? A judgement is not justice," said Santosh Gupta, a journalist who had written about the case and has appeared as a witness for the prosecution. It is a thought echoed by Supreme Court lawyer Rebecca John, who called it yet another case of "justice delayed is justice

their victims, said prosecution lawyer Virendra Singh Rathore. They took compromising photographs and videos of their victims and used them to blackmail them into silence or bring in more victims, he added.

"In one instance, the accused invited a man they knew to a party and got him drunk. They took compromising photos of him and threatened to make them public if he didn't bring his female friends to meet them," he said. "That's how they kept getting victims."

The accused also had strong political and social connections. Some of them were associated with a famous dargah (Muslim religious shrine) in the city.

"They roamed around on bikes and cars

camera. Only the girl's face was blurred. The report sent shock waves through the city. The public was outraged and shut the city down in protest for days. Anger spread through Rajasthan like raging fire.

"Finally, there was some concrete action from the government. Police registered a case of rape and blackmail against the accused and it was handed over to the the state's Criminal Investigation Department [CID]," Mr Rathore said.

Mr Rathore explained that the trial had dragged on for 32 years because of several factors, including the staggered arrests of the accused, alleged delaying tactics by the defence, an underfunded prosecution and systemic issues within the justice system.

When police filed the initial charges in 1992, six of the accused - who were only convicted last week - were left out because they were absconding.

Mr Rathore believes this was a mistake, as when the police finally filed charges against the six in 2002, they were still on the run. Two of them were arrested in 2003, another in 2005 and two more in 2012, while the last one was apprehended in 2018.

Every time one of the accused was arrested, the trial would begin afresh with the defence recalling victims and witnesses brought by the prosecution to give their testimonies.

"Under the law, the accused has the right to be present in court when witnesses are testifying and the defence has the right to cross-examine them," explained Mr Rathore.

He said that it was their power and connections that had helped keep the case under wraps for months. But there were people - like those working at the

This put the victims in the horrifying position of having to relive their trauma over and over again.

Mr Rathore recalled how often the victims, who were now in their 40s and 50s, would scream at the judge, asking why there were being dragged to court, years after they had been raped.

As time passed, the police also found it challenging to track down witnesses.

studio where the photos were developed and even some police officers - who were aware of what was going on.

One day, some of the photographs taken by the accused reached Mr Gupta. They had a chilling effect on him.

"Here were some of the city's most powerful men committing heinous acts with innocent, young girls - and there was proof of it. But there was no major reaction from the police or the public," he said.

He wrote a few reports about it but none managed to blow the case wide open.

Then one day, his paper "made a daring decision", he said.

It published a photo that showed a young girl, naked to the waist, pressed between two men who were fondling her breasts. One of the men was smiling at the

"Many didn't want to be associated with the case as their lives had moved on," Mr Rathore said.

"Even now, one of the accused is absconding. If he is arrested, or if the other accused appeal against the verdict in a higher court, the victims and witnesses will be called to testify again."

Sushma - who was one of three victims whose testimony played a key role in convicting the six accused - said that she had been talking to the media about her ordeal because she was telling the truth.

"I never changed my story. I was young and innocent when these people did this to me. It robbed me of everything. I have nothing to lose now," she said.

New Delhi has often raised concerns over Pakistan's support - financial and logistical - of cross-border terrorism, redflagging these in bilateral and international forums. In March Mr Jaishankar, on a visit to Singapore, lamented Pakistan's "almost industry-level" sponsoring of terrorism and terror activities, but stressed "India will not skirt this problem..." "How do you deal with a neighbour who does not hide the fact that they use terrorism as an instrument of statecraft? It's not one-off... but very sustained, almost at an industry level." He indicated then that while New Delhi will always be open to a friendly dialogue to resolve disputes - as it has stressed in conflict between Russia and Ukraine and amid military tension in West Asia - this could not be at the continued cost of terrorist attacks on India and Indians.

Jagdish Tytler In 1984 AntiSikh Riots Case: Court

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Friday directed framing of murder charges against Congress leader Jagdish Tytler in a case, registered by the CBI, related to the killing of Thakur Singh, Badal Singh and Gurcharan Singh, outside the Pul Bangash gurdwara in the city, during the 1984-anti Sikh riots. The CBI, in a chargesheet filed in May last year, had accused Tytler, a former Union Minister, of "inciting, instigating and provoking the mob" assembled near a gurdwara in November 1984.

In January, in its concluding arguments, the federal agency claimed eyewitnesses to Tytler instigating the mob, and said there is sufficient evidence to frame charges against him.

Expert Reveals Common Travel Scams and How to Avoid Them

Understanding the types of scams that are prevalent in different regions and learning how to avoid them can make a significant difference in ensuring a smooth and enjoyable trip.

Anjali Gupta, director, Y Not Travel, tells indianexpress.com, “When travelling internationally, it’s crucial to activate international roaming on your phone and avoid relying on local SIM cards. Download essential apps with your credit or debit card already added. Opt for branded hotels, especially in less developed countries, even if they come at a higher cost.”

Common scams to look out for when travelling abroad

From 40+ years of travel experience, Anjali Gupta says, here are some common scams to watch for:

Pickpocketing:

Thieves use distractions to steal valuables. Keep your belongings secure and stay alert in crowded places.

Commissioned Factory Visits: Drivers may take you to overpriced shops for commissions. Choose your own destinations.

Restaurant Scams:

Some drivers recommend restaurants where they get a commission, often at inflated prices. Stick to trusted suggestions.

Long Taxi Routes:

Drivers may take longer routes to increase the fare. Use GPS or ridehailing apps to track your journey.

Begging Scams:

Organised groups may ask for money or goods. Donate to reputable charities instead.

Money Exchange Scams:

Beware of counterfeit money or shortchanging at unofficial exchanges. Use established banks.

Fake Police:

Scammers posing as police may demand bribes. Always ask for proper

Aries

identification.

‘Closed’ Attractions:

Scammers may divert you to commission-based spots by claiming attractions are closed. Verify attraction status online.

Fake Tickets:

Purchase tickets from official vendors to avoid overpriced or fake tickets.

Overpriced Souvenirs:

Some shops inflate prices for tourists. Research and bargain where possible.

‘Helpful’ Locals:

Be cautious of locals who offer to guide you to shops or demand payment. Navigate independently if possible.

Fake Charities:

Scammers posing as charity workers can be deceptive. Donate to well-known organisations.

Strategies can travellers take to minimise their risk of falling victim to scams

Gupta informs, “To minimise the risk of falling victim to transportation scams, plan your routes in advance using apps to avoid detours. Stick to ride-hailing services for added transparency and safety, and carry small bills to prevent overcharging or receiving counterfeit change. Agree on taxi fares upfront if the metre isn’t used, and research common local scams to be aware of potential tricks.”

Public transport is often a safer and more economical choice, Gupta continues, so secure your belongings in crowded areas. Have local emergency numbers and your hotel’s contact details readily available, and opt for reputable transportation services, especially in unfamiliar areas.

“Avoid unsolicited offers from drivers at airports or tourist spots, and use official channels instead. Stay connected with a local SIM or portable Wi-Fi for access to maps and translation tools, and trust your instincts — if something feels off, choose an alternative and prioritise your safety,” she cautions.

International Student Enrollment in 2023 Matches Pre-Pandemic Levels

WASHINGTON, DC – The number of international students in the U.S. surged from 2022 to 2023, reaching 1,503,649 active F-1 and M-1 students, a 10% increase according to a new report by Boundless. This growth marks a significant rebound in international student enrollment, nearly returning to pre-pandemic levels.

The increase is attributed to several factors. U.S. institutions have ramped up recruitment efforts to offset declining domestic enrollments, and the country’s higher education system still has capacity to welcome more students, unlike Canada and the U.K., which are nearing their limits. The U.S. government also issued 446,000 student visas in 2023, the highest number since 2016, representing an 8.5% rise from 2022.

The report highlights that international students are drawn from various countries and pursue degrees across all regions of the U.S., with California

These AI-manipulated videos, appearing on social media, digital ads, and messaging apps, deceive viewers by altering the voice and mouth movements of well-known figures to endorse fake investments.

Attorney General Letitia James highlighted the sophisticated nature of these scams, which trick victims into investing by creating fake websites that show false returns. Scammers often shift conversations to encrypted messaging apps, making it difficult for

victims to recover their funds. The AG’s Office urges New Yorkers to be vigilant, advising against investing in schemes promising guaranteed returns, especially those promoted by celebrities. They recommend thorough research, checking professional credentials, and enabling Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) on financial accounts. New Yorkers are encouraged to report suspicious activities to the AG’s Office for further investigation.

Illegally Traded Human Remains Repatriated to Vanuatu with FBI Aid

NEW YORK, NY- When the FBI escorted a crate from New York to Vanuatu’s national museum, curator Kaitip Kami immediately recognized the statue inside. It incorporated the skull of a male ancestor from the Malakula hill tribes, his homeland. “I knew straight away,” Kami said, identifying its origins in the bush. The crate was part of a significant repatriation event in Port Vila, Vanuatu’s capital, where U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell oversaw the return of five crates containing sacred relics. This marked the culmination of an eight-year FBI investigation.

The relics included two skulls molded with mud and three large rambaramp effigies, each uniquely painted and containing the skull of a man. The items were likely stolen from a sacred men’s house in a bush village and were seized by the FBI in 2016 from the estate of a deceased New York collector. “These are some of the most fragile objects we’ve encountered,” said FBI agent Chris McKeogh. The items remained in temperature-controlled storage as investigators traced their origins, eventually confirmed by anthropologists.

Kami explained that the Smol Nambas tribe ceased the rambaramp practice 50 years ago, but can still identify a man by his effigy. The tribe traditionally placed their dead on a platform before molding the skull into a statue. Kami emphasized the importance of returning these effigies, considering them part of a human being, and expressed the tribe’s joy in reclaiming their ancestors.

Legal Action Taken Against Anti-Abortion Group for Alleged Patient Interference

NEW YORK, NY- The legal clash between New York Attorney General Letitia James and the anti-abortion group Red Rose Rescue persists. James sued the group in June 2023, accusing them of violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act (FACE) by obstructing access to abortion services. In December 2023, a preliminary injunction was issued, prohibiting the group from blocking access to reproductive health facilities. Despite this injunction, the group allegedly continued its disruptive activities. On August 27, 2024, James sought to hold Red Rose Rescue in contempt for violating the court order. The complaint particularly

zones around clinics, interfering with patients seeking reproductive health services. Mangat allegedly wore a pink vest resembling that of clinic escorts to confuse and harass patients. Red Rose Rescue, through spokesperson Monica Miller, denied the allegations, asserting that Mangat was exercising her First Amendment rights and was not acting as a group member. The group’s legal team is confident the complaint will be dismissed. Planned Parenthood of Greater New York praised James’s efforts to protect access to reproductive care, emphasizing the need for safe and dignified access to their services. The legal battle highlights ongoing tensions between reproductive rights advocates and anti-abortion activists in New York.

FBI Issues Critical Warning on Ransomware Threat

WASHINGTON, DC- new ransomware group, RansomHub, has been responsible for over 200 cyberattacks since its emergence in February 2024, according to a joint advisory from the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency issued on August 29. RansomHub, which operates as a ransomware-as-a-service, has targeted organizations across various sectors, including healthcare, finance, IT, and government services. The advisory reveals that RansomHub has attracted high-profile cybercriminals from other notorious groups like ALPHV and LockBit, contributing to its rapid success. Despite its recent establishment, RansomHub’s operations are described as both efficient and highly effective.

posters, drawing attention from passing cars. Representatives from SAN and SAHARA highlighted the pervasive issue of rape culture and the lack of

safety for women across South Asia and beyond. The march concluded with a healing circle led by Mahtab Javed Siddiqui, SAN’s Mental Health Program Manager.

SAN’s Program Coordinator, Sachini Rajapaksa, emphasized the importance of global solidarity and transformative justice, stating that supporting Moumita is part of a larger movement to challenge oppression and create a world where women’s dignity and equity are upheld. Organizers underscored that gender-based violence is a global crisis exacerbated by societal stigma and systemic failures, including underreported cases, inadequate police response, and ineffective legal processes, which often leave victims feeling powerless and silenced.

Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias Opens State Flag Redesign Contest

CHICAGO, IL- Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias announced that the Illinois Flag Commission will begin accepting public submissions for a new state flag design starting Tuesday, Sept. 3, with the deadline for entries set for Oct. 18. The commission, established in 2023 following the passage of Senate Bill 1818, aims to engage residents in the redesign process by collaborating with schools and libraries statewide.

“The symbols that represent and unify our state are important, and this presents an excellent opportunity to engage Illinoisans and showcase their pride,” said Giannoulias, who chairs the commission.

State Senator Doris Turner (Springfield) emphasized the importance of a flag

that reflects Illinois’s evolving identity, highlighting the state’s strong workforce and agricultural heritage. State Representative Kam Buckner (Chicago) echoed this sentiment, viewing the redesign as a chance to honor Illinois’s rich history while representing its future. The commission will select ten designs that best reflect the state’s identity and

will conduct an online public survey starting Jan. 1, allowing residents to vote on their favorite designs or retain the current flag. The commission provides guidelines for submissions, encouraging designs that incorporate natural features, history, and culture, with no restrictions on flag shape, ratio, or color. Submissions can be made online or by mail, and participants must provide personal details and a description of their design. Following public feedback, the commission will report its findings to the Illinois General Assembly, which will decide whether to adopt a new flag. This initiative aligns Illinois with other states, such as Minnesota and Michigan, that are also considering or have adopted new flag designs.

Town Hall Meeting for Future PanAsian American Center

CHICAGO, IL- On September 12, the Chinese Mutual Aid Association, the Indo-American Center, and Apna Ghar will host a town hall meeting to discuss the future Pan-Asian American Center at the Skokie Public Library, located at 5215 Oakton St, Skokie, IL. The event will take place from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Asian Americans are one of the fastestgrowing demographic groups, according to the 2020 Census data. Despite some recent gains, widespread recognition of the accomplishments, contributions, and cultural understanding of the AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) community in Illinois remains lacking. The Chicago area is home to around 20 distinct Asian American ethnic groups, ranging from more commonly known communities such as Asian Indian, Filipino, Korean, Chinese, Thai, and Cambodian, to lesser-recognized groups

Elder Fraud Surges: SW Florida Seniors Targeted in Scams

SARASOTA, FL- The FBI and Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office have reported a rise in scams targeting senior citizens, involving cash and gold bar schemes. Scammers use tech support and government impersonation tactics to convince victims to liquidate assets into cash or precious metals. They arrange for couriers to collect the assets, claiming they will be safeguarded in a protected account, but victims never hear from them again.

Special Agent in Charge Matthew Fodor from the FBI Tampa Field Office highlighted the severity of the issue, noting some victims have lost over $300,000. He advises people to hang up on scammers, avoid suspicious links, and report any fraud immediately.

Sheriff Kurt Hoffman emphasized the ongoing efforts to raise awareness and combat this sophisticated fraud, particularly against elderly residents. The Sheriff’s Economic Crimes Unit is actively investigating these cases. Victims of fraud should contact local law enforcement. In Sarasota County, reports can be made via email at fraud@sarasotasheriff.org or by calling (941) 316-1201. The FBI can be reached at 1-800-CALL-FBI, and reports can also be filed online at tips. fbi.gov. The National Elder Fraud Hotline is available at (833) 372-8311.

like Mongolian, Nepalese, Rohingyan, and Sri Lankan. Together, these groups constitute 8% of the Asian population in Cook County, but this figure rises to over 25% in municipalities like Skokie, Niles, Schaumburg, and Naperville.

Despite this diversity, investment in the AAPI community by philanthropic

organizations is still minimal, with only 20 cents of every $100 donated by foundations going to AAPI communities, according to a 2021 study by Asian Americans / Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy.

Currently, several nonprofit organizations focus on specific ethnic heritages, which leads to philanthropic dollars being spread thinly across many groups. The creation of a Pan-Asian American Center will provide a centralized space where various nonprofits can collaborate, raise awareness of services across communities, and serve as a hub for the Pan-Asian American community.

A Pan-Asian American Center can significantly enhance the well-being, representation, and cultural vitality of Asian American communities. To this end, the Chinese Mutual Aid Association, Indo-American Center,

Mississippi Seafood Distributor, Managers Plead Guilty to Conspiracy, Misbranding

MISSISSIPPI- A Mississippi seafood distributor, Quality Poultry and Seafood Inc. (QPS), along with two managers, pleaded guilty to fraudulently mislabeling seafood and committing wire fraud. The company, the largest

seafood wholesaler on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, admitted to substituting cheap, imported fish for premium local species and misrepresenting them to customers from 2002 to 2019. QPS agreed to pay $1 million in forfeitures and a $150,000 fine.

Managers Todd A. Rosetti and James W. Gunkel, both of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, also pleaded guilty for their roles in the scheme. The fraud deceived both restaurant customers and retail buyers, impacting local fishermen and the Gulf Coast seafood market. Despite being under federal investigation, QPS continued the mislabeling practices even after a criminal search warrant was executed by the FDA. Sentencing for QPS and the managers is scheduled for December 11.

Senator Villivalam Holds 4th Hearing on Public Transit and Health

CHICAGO, IL – Senate Transportation

Chair Ram Villivalam (D-Chicago) held a hearing on Wednesday to emphasize the critical role of public transit in public health. Villivalam highlighted that public transit reduces emissions and improves mental and physical health, making it essential for community well-being.

However, the Regional Transit Authority (RTA) is facing a $730 million fiscal shortfall by 2026 as federal COVID-19 funds deplete. There’s a call for up to $1.1 billion in investment to secure the future of the transit system.

Villivalam has conducted several hearings across Chicago and its suburbs to assess public transit’s impact on the economy, accessibility, and quality of life. Wednesday’s hearing featured testimony from service agency leaders, county officials, and residents discussing the health benefits of public transit.

State Senator Don DeWitte (R-St. Charles) expressed concerns over potential changes to Illinois’ regional transit system that could affect commuters’ access, costs, and governance.

The next hearing is scheduled for September 18 in the Northwest Suburbs of Cook and Lake Counties, focusing on transit’s role in mitigating climate impact. Further details will be available on Villivalam’s website and social media channels.

LOGANSPORT, IN- Five swimmers in Logansport, Indiana, were injured in what police are calling a “freak accident” at a swimming pool on Sunday afternoon.

Emergency responders, including officers, firefighters, and medical personnel, were dispatched to a home in the 2600 block of High St. just after 2:30 p.m., according to the Logansport Police Department.

The incident involved two adults and three juveniles, all of whom were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Two of the juveniles were later transferred to different hospitals for further care.

According to police, the accident occurred due to a malfunction in the pool’s pump system. A pinched wire caused the protective cover to break, leading to the wire’s exposure. When the exposed wire came into contact with the pool water, it resulted in an electrical shock that injured the five swimmers. A spokesperson for the Logansport Police Department described the incident to Indianapolis’ FOX 59 as a “freak accident.”

Logansport is located in Northern Indiana, approximately 90 minutes north of Indianapolis.

Cook County and Elevate Launch

$11.5M Water Aid Initiative

CHICAGO, IL– Cook County, in partnership with Elevate, has unveiled the Cook County Water Affordability Program, a groundbreaking $11.5 million initiative aimed at assisting suburban residents struggling with water bills. Funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and approved by the Cook County Board of Commissioners in May 2024, this program offers water bill relief, leak repairs, and technical assistance to municipalities.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle highlighted the urgency of the initiative, stating, “Too many residents are forced to choose between paying for water or other essential needs.” The program aims to mitigate this crisis by addressing overdue bills, fixing leaks, and empowering municipalities with tools to tackle water affordability.

Dr. Anne Evens, CEO of Elevate, emphasized the program’s impact, estimating it could prevent thousands of water shutoffs and generate over $2 million in benefits.

Key components of the program include the Water Affordability Technical Assistance, which offers municipalities the chance to develop water affordability plans, and the Leak Repair Program, addressing one of the main causes of high water bills. Applications for municipalities and plumbing contractors are open until September 30, 2024.

This initiative represents a significant step towards ensuring that all Cook County residents have access to clean, affordable water, a critical resource.

appreciation loans to first-time homebuyers. These loans, which are funded through mortgage loans rather than taxpayer dollars, cover 20% of the purchase price or up to $150,000 for down payments or closing costs. Borrowers repay the original loan amount plus 20% of any home value appreciation.

Supporters argue that the bill would help undocumented taxpayers, including DACA recipients, achieve homeownership and build generational wealth. Cynthia Gomez of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights emphasized the bill’s potential to

address barriers to homeownership, particularly for communities of color. However, critics contend that state funds should not be used for undocumented individuals. State Rep. Joe Patterson expressed opposition, citing concerns about limited resources.

The bill’s fate remains uncertain, as Governor Gavin Newsom has not indicated whether he will sign it. If enacted, undocumented borrowers with valid Social Security or Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers could apply for the loan, provided they meet other residency and documentation requirements.

FDA Raises Minimum Age for Tobacco Sales Restrictions in New Final Rule

WASHINGTON, DC- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a new rule enforcing stricter age verification requirements for tobacco product sales, effective September 30. This rule aligns with the legislation signed in December 2019, which raised the federal minimum age for purchasing tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, from 18 to 21. Under the new rule, retailers must check photo identification for anyone under 30 attempting to buy tobacco products, an increase from the previous age limit of 27. The FDA emphasizes the importance of this step as research indicates that visual age estimation is unreliable.

Additionally, tobacco products can no longer be sold via vending machines in any facility where individuals under 21 are allowed, extending the previous

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

As September arrives, it’s crucial to focus on prostate cancer, one of the most common cancers in men. Globally, 1.4 million new cases are diagnosed annually, making it the second most frequent cancer after lung cancer. Early detection is vital for better outcomes but raises questions about screening timing and genetic factors. In the U.S., about 174,000 new cases of prostate cancer are reported annually, while India sees around 25,000 cases. However, underreporting and limited screening access may mean India's actual numbers are higher. Prostate cancer often progresses slowly, and early detection through a ProstateSpecific Antigen (PSA) blood test can

be life-saving. Elevated PSA levels may indicate cancer but can also result from benign conditions. Not all early-stage prostate cancers require immediate treatment, especially in older patients where risks might outweigh benefits. Genetics significantly influence prostate cancer risk. Men with a family history, particularly those with BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations, face higher risks and may develop aggressive cancer at a younger age. Ethnic disparities are also notable, with African American men at higher risk and often facing more aggressive cancer. Screening guidelines are debated, with some recommending PSA testing starting at age 50, or earlier for high-risk groups. The concern over overdiagnosis and overtreatment, particularly in older men, has led to a more personalized approach, emphasizing shared decisionmaking between patients and doctors. This September, men in their 40s, 50s, and 60s should talk to their healthcare providers about prostate cancer screening. Early detection can make a significant difference—prevention is better than cure

restriction that applied to those under 18.

These measures are part of ongoing efforts to reduce youth access to tobacco. The FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products director, Brian King, highlighted the critical importance of keeping tobacco out of the hands of young people to curb addiction and prevent tobacco-related diseases.

Since raising the age limit, the FDA has conducted over 1.5 million compliance checks, resulting in thousands of warnings and penalties. The FDA continues to support retailers with educational resources, including age verification tools, to help enforce these regulations. The agency plans to release further updates and resources on its website soon.
