In First Legislative Win For Trump, US Congress Clears Immigrant Detention Bill
HiIndia Newsdesk
Washington DC:
In a first legislative win to President Donald Trump, the US Congress on Wednesday gave the final approval to a GOP-led bill that would require the detention and deportation of undocumented migrants who enter the country without authorization and are charged with certain crimes. The bill - titled the Laken Riley Act - capped the opening salvo in a broader crackdown on immigration that the President has promised.
The legislation received 263 to 156 with 46 Democrats voting in its favour, a sign of the growing cross-party consensus around taking a hard-line approach
against those who enter the US illegally.
The bill is named after a 22-year-old Georgia student who was killed last year while out for a run. An undocumented migrant from Venezuela was convicted and sentenced to life without parole. The convict had previously been arrested in a shoplifting case but had not been detained. Laken Riley's case reignited
Thousands Flee FastGrowing Fire Near Los Angeles
A new fast-moving wildfire has erupted in Los Angeles County, prompting tens of thousands to evacuate a region already reeling from the most destructive fires in its history.
The Hughes fire ignited about 45 miles north-west of the city of Los Angeles on Wednesday morning, near Castaic Lake in a mountainous area that borders several residential areas and schools.
The blaze grew to more than 9,200 acres in several hours on Wednesday, fuelled by winds and dry brush. No homes or businesses have been damaged, and fire officials expressed confidence about getting the blaze under control.
Under the provisions of the bill, the Department of Homeland Security is required to detain undocumented migrants if they have been charged with, arrested for, convicted of, or have admitted to certain criminal offences, including theft and burglary.
a debate over immigration and crime in America.
Under the provisions of the bill, the Department of Homeland Security is required to detain undocumented migrants-- people who are in the US unlawfully or without legal status-- if they have been charged with, arrested for, convicted of, or have admitted to certain criminal offences, including theft and burglary, according to a report by The New York Times.
White House Spanish Page Removed Amid Immigration Crackdown
Washington, United States: President Donald Trump's administration has shut down the White House's Spanish language page.
As of this week, visitors to whitehouse.gov/es now see an error message and the words "page not found" beneath an image of the White House. Below that, visitors can click on "go to home page" which directs to whitehouse.gov, where a video montage plays featuring Trump. The move was immediately met with criticism.

Elon Musk Lashes Out As Trump Backs Sam Altman For World's Largest AI Project
Washington D.C.: A new era in Artificial Intelligence (AI) has begun in the U.S. with President Donald Trump's announcement of the world's largest AI initiative, "Stargate." The project, backed by OpenAI's Sam Altman, Oracle's Larry Ellison, and SoftBank's Masayoshi Son, aims to establish cutting-edge AI infrastructure with a $500 billion investment.
Nvidia is reportedly in talks to join but has not confirmed its participation. At the White House launch, President Trump called Stargate "the largest AI infrastructure project in history," with an initial $100 billion investment creating over 100,000
jobs. Larry Ellison revealed that a one-million-square-foot data center in Texas is already under construction. However, Elon Musk, a prominent AI figure and Trump ally, has been left out of the project.
Musk expressed skepticism on his social media platform X, questioning the funding claims and suggesting potential
Canada changes tone in bid to stave off Trump tariffs
Facing a looming tariff war with the US, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has threatened the stick - now, he's hoping a carrot will work.
In a change of tone from his previous warnings about economic hardships, the Canadian leader is promising to help Donald Trump achieve America's "golden age," which was alluded to in the US president's inauguration speech. "Canada is a safe, secure and reliable partner in an uncertain world," Trudeau said this week. The alternative, he said, "would be more resources from Russia, China or Venezuela".
Musk's Transgender Daughter Responds to "Nazi Salute" Claims
The 21-year-old, who legally changed her name and gender at the age of 18, did not name Elon Musk but heavily hinted that it was about him.
Elon Musk's estranged transgender daughter Vivian Jenna Wilson, launched a subtle yet scathing attack on him after the billionaire allegedly made a "Nazi salute" during President Donald Trump's inauguration rally. The 21-year-old, who legally changed her name and gender at the age of 18 and disowned Mr Musk, did not name him but heavily hinted she was responding to the controversial incident.
"I'm just gonna say let's call a spade a f***ing spade," Ms Wilson wrote on Instagram's Threads platform.
instability among the partners. Musk also hinted at tensions between OpenAI and Microsoft, further fueling speculation.
Musk, a former co-founder of OpenAI, has had a falling out with Sam Altman and has filed lawsuits alleging OpenAI’s transition to a forprofit model betrayed its original mission. Musk accuses Altman of manipulation and greed, calling the dispute "a tale of altruism versus greed."
Meanwhile, Sam Altman lauded President Trump for his support, stating Stargate would solidify the U.S. as a global AI leader. Despite financial and legal challenges, the project aims to revolutionize AI and redefine global tech dominance.
"Especially if there were two spades done in succession based on the reaction of the first spade," she added. As her post blew up, Ms Wilson wrote another thread, sarcastically explaining that she did not intend the card analogy to insinuate anything about her father. "I don't know why ya'll are reacting with such vigor, I'm clearly only talking about card suits. I mean I have ADHD and this was CLEARLY just an accident that people happened to interpret to mean something other than just card suits. After all, there's no proof I'm not just talking about card suits," Ms Wilson joked. "People assuming that I'm not just talking about card suits just goes to show how dishonest people/the media can be."
China Vows to Defend Interests Amid Trump's Tariff Threats
Donald Trump stirred the tariff pot again after taking office and on Tuesday said his administration was discussing a 10 per cent punitive duty on Chinese imports.
Beijing responded firmly on Wednesday to former US President Donald Trump's renewed tariff threats, stating its readiness to safeguard its national interests in the ongoing trade conflict. Mr. Trump warned of imposing a 10% duty on Chinese imports by February 1, citing concerns over fentanyl trafficking through Mexico and Canada. China's foreign ministry stressed its commitment to constructive dialogue. "We are willing to maintain communication with the US, address differences properly, expand mutually beneficial cooperation, and promote stable, healthy development in ChinaUS relations," said spokeswoman Mao Ning. She reiterated Beijing's stance against tariffs, noting, "There are no winners in a trade war."
Mr. Trump, who previously enacted tariffs on Chinese goods during his presidency, recently claimed his
Trump Urges Putin to End 'Ridiculous War' in Ukraine, Warns of New Sanctions
Donald Trump has warned he will impose high tariffs and further sanctions on Russia if Vladimir Putin fails to end the war in Ukraine. Thailand Legalises Same-Sex Marriage
As Thailand's long-awaited equal marriage law comes into effect on Thursday, police officer Pisit "Kew" Sirihirunchai hopes to be the first in line to marry his long-term partner Chanatip "Jane" Sirihirunchai.
Some 180 same-sex couples are registering their unions at one of Bangkok's grandest shopping malls, in an event city officials helped organise to celebrate this legal milestone.
Russia's full-scale invasion launched in February 2022, in a single day. Russia has not yet responded to the remarks, but senior officials have said in recent days that there is a small window of opportunity for Moscow to deal with the new US administration. Putin has said repeatedly that he is prepared to negotiate an end to the war, which first began in 2014, but that Ukraine would have to accept the reality of Russian territorial gains, which are currently about 20% of its land. He also refuses to allow Ukraine to join Nato. Kyiv does not want to give up its territory, although President Volodymyr Zelensky has conceded he may have to cede some currently occupied land temporarily.
administration was considering the new duty in response to fentanyl being shipped from China. February

China's economy, heavily reliant on exports, remains vulnerable to such threats. Official data ranks Mexico, Canada, and China among the top sources of US imports. Mr. Trump’s earlier tariff measures targeted what he termed unfair practices by Beijing, while his successor, President Joe Biden, continued to pressure China with regulations limiting access to advanced technologies. During his recent election campaign, Mr. Trump pledged even higher tariffs if reelected. China emphasized its preference for cooperation over conflict but stood resolute in defending its economic interests amidst escalating tensions.
France Issues New Arrest Warrant For Syria's Assad: Report
Paris: Two French investigating magistrates have issued an arrest warrant against ousted Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad for suspected complicity in war crimes, the second such move by France's judicial authorities, a source said on Tuesday.
Assad, who was ousted late last year in a lightning offensive by Islamist forces, is held responsible in the warrant issued on Monday as "commander-in-chief of
'Hope This Time Trump 2.0 Will Be More Serious': Iran Official At Davos
Davos: Iran hopes U.S. President Donald Trump will choose "rationality" in its dealing with the Islamic Republic, Iran's Vice-President for Strategic Affairs Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Wednesday, adding Tehran had never sought nuclear weapons.
Addressing the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Zarif said Iran
did not pose a security threat to the world.
"I hope that this time around, a 'Trump 2' will be more serious, more focused, more realistic," Zarif said.
In 2018, then-President Trump reneged on Tehran's 2015 nuclear deal with world powers and re-imposed harsh U.S. sanctions as part of his "maximum pressure" policy against the country.
In response, Tehran breached the deal in several ways including by accelerating its uranium enrichment.
Trump has vowed to return to the policy he pursued in his previous term that sought use economic pressure to force the country to negotiate a deal on its nuclear programme, ballistic missile programme and regional activities.

This mandate was issued as part of an investigation into the case of Salah Abou Nabout, a 59-year-old Franco-Syrian national and former French teacher, who was killed on June 7, 2017 following the bombing of his home by Syrian army helicopters.
The French judiciary considers that Assad ordered and provided the means for this attack, according to the source.
Six senior Syrian army officials are already the target of French arrest warrants over the case in an investigation that began in 2018. He expressed hope that "a trial will take place and that the perpetrators will be arrested and judged, wherever they are".
1,500 active-duty troops headed to USMexico border
US President Donald Trump told US government agencies to prepare to "immediately repel, repatriate, and remove" undocumented immigrants as part of a wider effort to fight what he's termed an "invasion" across the southern border. Trump's order comes as US officials announce the deployment of additional active duty troops to the border, and as processes that allow swift deportations are expanded. The US also moved to cancel all refugee travel and processing, leaving thousands stranded as they wait to come to the US. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump is "sending a very strong message" to people around the world with the actions.

Trump Prioritizes India: Meets S Jaishankar
Washington DC: Indicating the importance Washington gives to New Delhi as the new Trump administration takes office, US Secretary of State Maro Rubio and National Security Adviser Mike Walz held their first bilateral and international meets respectively with India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. Foreign Minister S Jaishankar is in Washington at the invitation of the US Government to attend the inauguration of Donald Trump as the 47th president of the United States. The meeting between the two top diplomats representing the world's oldest and largest democracies took place at the Foggy Bottom headquarters of the US State Department. The bilateral meeting was preceded by the first Quad ministerial meet after Donald Trump became President.
Marco Rubio's decision to have his first bilateral meeting with India's S Jaishankar assumes significance given that the first foreign outreach of any previous new US administration traditionally has been with its two neighbours Canada and Mexico, or with one of its NATO allies.

"I like both sides of the argument, but I also like very competent people coming into our country, even if that involves them training and helping other people that may not have the qualifications they do. But I don't want to stop -and I'm not just talking about engineers, I'm talking about people at all levels," Trump told reporters at the White House during a joint news conference with Oracle CTO Larry
Ellison, Softbank CEO Masayoshi Son, and Open AI CEO Sam Altman. The president was responding to a question on the ongoing debate on H-1B visa within his support base. While his close confidants like Elon Musk, the Tesla owner, supports H-1B visa as it brings in qualified tech professionals, many of his supporters oppose it arguing that it takes away jobs from Americans. "We want competent people coming into our country. And H-1B, I know the programme very well. I use the programme. Maître d', wine experts, even waiters, high-quality waiters -you've got to get the best people. People like Larry, he needs engineers, Masa also needs... they need engineers like nobody's ever needed them," Trump said. "So, we have to have quality people coming in. Now by doing that, we're expanding businesses and that takes care of everybody. So I'm sort of on both sides of the argument, but what I really do feel is that we have to let really competent people, great people, come into our country. And we do that through the H-1B programme," Trump said.

Donald Trump 2.0:
India to take back 18,000 illegal migrants from US
According to a Bloomberg report, the Indian government is collaborating with the United States to repatriate approximately 18,000 Indian citizens residing illegally in the U.S. This initiative aims to demonstrate India's cooperation with the Trump administration's stringent immigration policies and to safeguard legal immigration avenues for its citizens. The U.S. has identified these individuals for deportation, and India is set to verify and commence the repatriation process. While the official count stands at 18,000, estimates from the Pew Research Center suggest that the actual number of undocumented Indian immigrants in the U.S. could be as high as 725,000. This move is part of a broader effort by India to maintain favorable relations with the U.S. and to protect programs like the H-1B visa, which is vital for many skilled Indian professionals working in the U.S. In 2023, Indians accounted for approximately 75% of all H-1B visas issued. The discussions between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar have also highlighted concerns related to irregular migration, reflecting the shared commitment of both nations to address immigration challenges collaboratively.
Trump considers 10% tariff on China from as soon as February
Donald Trump has said he is considering imposing a 10% tariff on imports of Chinese-made goods as soon as 1 February.
In remarks to reporters at the White House earlier, he justified the measure by claiming China was sending fentanyl - an opioid fuelling drug crises around the world - to the US, via Mexico and Canada.
It followed threats by Trump to levy import taxes of 25% on Mexico and Canada, accusing them of allowing undocumented migrants and drugs to come into America.
22 States Sue Trump Over Birthright Citizenship Plan
Washington: A coalition of Democratic-leaning states launched legal actions Tuesday seeking to block Donald Trump's plan to end birthright citizenship in the United States.
The two separate lawsuits involving a total of 22 states, including California and New York, come the day after Trump took office and quickly unveiled a phalanx of executive orders he hopes will reshape American immigration. Chief among them was an order eliminating the automatic granting of citizenship to anyone born on US soil, a right guaranteed by the 14th Amendment of the country's constitution.

The unexpected closure of Hindenburg Research, a US-based short-selling firm known for its controversial practices, has sparked intense debate about its motives, operations, and the impact of its allegations on global markets. While some view the shutdown as a retreat amid mounting scrutiny, others argue it raises more questions than answers about the ethics and legality of its business model. HIINDIA delves into the factors surrounding Hindenburg’s closure, the aftermath of its highprofile reports, and its implications for market integrity
Hindenburg Research Shuts Down
A Legacy of Controversial Reports
Hindenburg Research gained international prominence in January 2023 with its scathing report targeting Indian billionaire Gautam Adani’s conglomerate. The report alleged securities law violations and corporate mismanagement, leading to a massive erosion in the market value of Adani Group companies. While the Adani Group categorically denied these allegations, the fallout triggered global discussions about short-selling practices and their potential for market disruption.
Political Reactions in India
The shutdown has reignited political tensions in India, with opposition leaders seizing the opportunity to underscore alleged lapses in regulatory oversight. Congress party’s Jairam Ramesh dismissed the closure as irrelevant to what he described as the “Modani Mega Scam.” Ramesh accused the Indian government of using foreign policy and investigative agencies to benefit close allies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, particularly in sectors like airports, ports, defense, and cement.
Legal and Market Perspectives
From a legal standpoint, experts have pointed to ongoing investigations by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) as a potential factor behind Hindenburg’s closure. Senior Advocate Mahesh Jethmalani alleged that the firm’s shutdown was a “run for cover,” hinting at possible connections to financier George Soros and broader conspiracies to destabilize Indian markets.
Prominent SEBI expert PR Ramesh echoed these concerns, suggesting that Hindenburg’s business model relied on exploiting regulatory ambiguities. “The firm’s strategy of publishing negative reports while taking short positions raised valid questions about transparency and ethics in market operations,” he said.
Accusations of Economic Sabotage
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sharply criticized Hindenburg, accusing the firm of undermining India’s economic progress. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla described the reports as “sponsored acts of economic terrorism” aimed

Down for Hindenburg – The Story of Rise & Fall of Adani Group
Things change very swiftly in the stock market. But this must have been a kind of sweep, even the stock pundits may not have been foreseeing. As the news of one of the bravest short-sellers in history, Hindenburg Research shuttering down was being received in the United States, its direct ripple effects were felt in India. Stocks of Adani Group – the Indian multinational conglomerate, headquartered in Ahmedabad saw a steep rise – going up by up to 11 percent!
Amongst one of Hindenburgs’ most ambitious and much-talked-about exposes remained – its detailed report on India’s Adani Group that accused the conglomerate that was bankrolling towards a meteoric success of financial wrongdoings and stock market frauds. The attack on the Adani group was seen by many in India as a personal affront, partly owing to groups’ founder and chairman Gautam Adani’s closeness to Indian PM Narendra Modi.
Nate Anderson, the founder of Hindenburg in a short message informed of his decision to disband the company. In India, Adani supporters took to social media in a celebratory tone. The news also brought a meme galore on the Internet.
While Hindenburg’s 2023 expose made the U.S. short seller a
household name in India, this was not the first time that the firm had taken on a mighty conglomerate. Here’s looking at Hindenburg’s some other exposes concerning Indian companies In 2017 Accused Indian film company Eros International
Not many know that Adani was not the first case where Hindenburg Research took to looking into an Indian company’s workings. Back in 2017, it sought to examine Eros International, an Indian film company listed in the U.S. The report revealed accounting irregularities, falsified revenue and undisclosed related-party transactions. Eros sued Hindenburg, but the lawsuit was dismissed. In 2019 after a third report accusing the company of “egregious accounting irregularities”, the company was delisted from the NYSE.
In 2024 Hindenburg accused the Chief of Market Regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi)
Madhabi Puri Buch, the Chief of Market Regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India was accused by the short seller of having links with offshore funds used by the Adani group. This caused another hurricane started by Hindenburg in India even though both Buch and Adani denied these allegations.
at derailing the country’s rise on the global stage. Such rhetoric highlights the polarizing nature of Hindenburg’s activities and the broader implications for emerging markets.
Market Manipulation or Activism?
Ajay Bagga, a former senior banker, weighed in on the ethical dilemmas posed by Hindenburg’s operational model. Bagga described the firm’s tactics as predatory, contrasting them with traditional short-sellers who rely on fundamental analyses or activist investors who push for corporate reforms.
Bagga noted that Hindenburg’s approach often inflicted significant collateral damage, eroding shareholder value and market confidence. “While short-selling can uncover flaws and improve market integrity, Hindenburg’s methods veered towards financial opportunism,” he added. The firm’s alleged collaborations with undisclosed hedge funds further muddied the waters, casting doubt on its claims of truth-seeking. Financial Viability and
Regulatory Pressure
Several experts have speculated that Hindenburg’s closure may have been driven by financial challenges and mounting regulatory scrutiny. Short-selling, while lucrative during market downturns, rarely delivers sustained profits. The firm’s reliance on high-profile reports to generate returns may have become financially unsustainable in the long term.
Additionally, regulatory investigations into Hindenburg’s practices may have forced the firm to shut down preemptively to avoid penalties. Ajay Bagga highlighted the importance of holding such entities accountable to prevent a recurrence of predatory market behavior.
A Polarizing Legacy
Hindenburg Research’s closure marks the end of a contentious chapter in financial markets. While the firm positioned itself as a watchdog exposing corporate malfeasance, critics argue it prioritized profit over market stability. The impact of its reports on companies, investors, and broader markets cannot be understated, raising questions about the role of short-sellers in a fair and transparent financial system. As debates continue, the closure underscores the need for robust regulatory frameworks to ensure accountability while preserving market integrity. For now, Hindenburg’s shutdown leaves behind a complex legacy that will likely influence discussions on financial ethics and corporate governance for years to come.

Declaring a national emergency at the US-Mexico border, Trump announced plans to revoke the constitutional right of citizenship for anyone born in the US, a move expected to face significant legal challenges.
“I think we have good grounds,” Trump stated, acknowledging potential court pushback. He also ordered troops to the southern border to "repel the disastrous invasion" and pledged to halt illegal entry while beginning mass deportations of "criminal aliens." Additionally, Trump reinstated the

No 'Pakistan' On Team India Jersey: BCCI's Champions Trophy Directive Leaves Pakistan Board Fuming
A fresh controversy has emerged from the forthcoming ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan and Dubai, with India reportedly objecting to 'Pakistan' (the name of the host nation) being printed on the team's jersey. India are set to play their Champions Trophy games in Dubai, though Pakistan remain the official hosts for the tournament. While a hybrid-model was accepted by the Pakistan Cricket Board and the International Cricket Council after the Board of Control for Cricket in India's refusal to send its team to Pakistan, the host name of the jersey has triggered a fresh row.
A PCB official, in a conversation with news agency IANS, accused the BCCI of bringing 'politics in cricket' by refusing to have Pakistan's name printed on Team India's jerseys. Earlier, the Indian board had also reportedly refused to send captain Rohit Sharma to Pakistan

"He's Finished": BCCI,
Management
Blamed for Ending Star's Career
As debate and discussion continues surrounding India's squad for the Champions Trophy 2025, former India cricketerturned-pundit Aakash Chopra has raised the curious case of leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal. Chopra stated that Chahal's career has been "finished" by BCCI and the team management for no apparent reason, arguing that the leg-spinner's statistics were impressive even when he was dropped from ODIs over two years ago. Chahal has recently been in the news over a reported split from his wife Dhanashree Verma, and did not take part in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024/25. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra brought up the fact that Yuzvendra Chahal has been left out of India's ODI squad for a long time, despite not performing badly. "Yuzvendra Chahal has been totally finished. His file has been closed. I have got no idea why they did that," said Chopra. "Because it's been two years since it (Chahal's file) has been closed, there is no place for Yuzi also here because as soon as you suddenly pick him out of the blue, it will be seen as a regressive step," Chopra said.

The BCCI didn't alter its stance over the refusal to send Team India to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy, despite great push by the PCB. In the end, the Pakistan board had to agree to India's terms, though the new agreement would prevent PCB from sending its team to India for ICC events in the future as well With the Champions Trophy roughly a month away from its start, fresh controversies continue to make headlines.

Trump’s Birthright Citizenship Order Unfairly Targets
Zofeen Maqsood
Everyone in America and particularly the immigrants have been waiting with fingers crossed for January 20, 2025, or the day of oath taking of new President Donald Trump. As expected, Trump delivered enough salvos on the first day itself triggering a flurry of anxiety amongst immigrants, visit visa holders, undocumented individuals, temporary work- visa holders. His barrage of executive orders also sent attorneys and civic rights organizations into an overdrive explaining and preparing for the days ahead.
Amongst multiple executive orders that he signed on what can be said as a very eventful day 1 in office for the 47th President of one of the most talked about especially amongst the Indian community remained the Birthright Citizenship Executive Order.
As civil liberty advocates cried hoarse that this order attempts to undermine the 14th Amendment to the US constitution, there was a sense of panic amongst temporary work-based visa holders who found themselves at the receiving end of this order. As numerous data has shown that 80 percent of all work-based visas are held by Indians in America, the community felt wrongly targeted.
Hi India asked Netra Chavan, an Immigration Consultant based in California to break down the Birthright citizenship unfairly targets legal workbased visa holders in America, a majority of whom are Indians.
Netra Chavan says, “On January 20, 2025, President Trump made a new rule about who can be a U.S. citizen when they are born in the U.S. This rule will start on February 19, 2025, so the child born before this date will still get birthright citizenship under the current
H-1B, L-1 and F-1 Visa Holders
law, and nothing changes for them. But after that date, babies born in the U.S. might not automatically become U.S. citizens. However, under the 14th amendment, any baby born in the U.S. became a citizen, no matter what their parents' status was. This rule has been the law for over 150 years. STATUS issue?
If a child born in the U.S. isn't eligible for citizenship, their status depends on their parents. If the parents have temporary visas (like H-1B or F-1, etc), the child can stay as a dependent. If the parents are undocumented, the child may be undocumented as well, unless they qualify for programs like DACA. If the parents are refugees or asylees, the
child may get legal residency through them. Whereby, not granting automatic citizenship, it may also encourage non-citizens to pursue legal pathways to citizenship, rather than relying on birthright citizenship.
WHY new reform?
The new rule to end birthright citizenship is part of a bigger plan to change immigration laws. Authorities are worried about birth tourism, where people come to the U.S. just to have a baby so the baby gets citizenship, additionally, undocumented immigration, where people live in the U.S. without permission. These problems are leading to the push to stop giving automatic citizenship to babies born in the U.S. Ending birthright citizenship could help reduce birth tourism, control illegal immigration, ensure fairness by linking citizenship to parents' legal status, and encourage broader immigration reforms addressing other issues like temporary visas and undocumented immigration.
Who will have this impact?
Unfortunately, genuine F-1 (student) and H-1B, L1s, (worker) & other visa holders could be affected. If the rule changes, babies born in the U.S. to parents with these visas might no longer automatically receive U.S. citizenship, as they did before.
While the reform could help address
The birthright reform could feel like an unwanted wildfire affecting everyone, instead of targeting the real issues like birth tourism or immigration control. It risks unfairly punishing long-term residents who’ve followed the rules.
issues like birth tourism and improve immigration control, it should be aimed solely at new arrivals, whether they are legal or undocumented, or those who have not yet filed for a green card. It wouldn’t be fair to impact long-term residents who have lived in the U.S. for decades, paid taxes, followed the law, and are waiting in the green card (GC) backlog. These individuals have contributed to society, and should not be penalized for the actions of others who are new to the USA. A fair approach would ensure that current residents, including those waiting for their green cards, are not harmed by changes meant for new arrivals, making the reform more thoughtful and balanced.
Those challenging the reform should consider a balanced approach that can offer a win-win solution, addressing the concerns of new arrivals while also protecting the rights and contributions of long-term residents.

It risks unfairly punishing long-term residents who’ve followed the rules. A more focused approach could resolve the issues without negatively impacting those who have contributed to the country.
Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi
Hosts Immigration Townhall
As soon as Donald Trump came into office, he issued a sweeping volley of executive orders, creating a host of questions around immigration and policies. A vast majority of immigrants and visa holders in America are left wondering what they need to be prepared for within the days to come.
Quite in time Congressman Raja Krishnamoothi, who represents Illinois’ 8th Congressional District organized an immigration Town Hall with former American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) President David Leopold. Krishnamoorthi along with immigration law expert David Leopold talked about Trump’s executive orders and how the orders can directly go on to affect many visa holders including work-based visas such as H-1B and L-1. Attorney Leopold offered some practical and necessary advice to those on visas and how to navigate the coming times in light of these new executive orders. One of the most talked about topic during the Town Hall remained Trump’s executive
order on Birthright Citizenship as questions trickled in ranging from the possibility of a legal stay on the executive order to if it affects legal non-immigrant visa holders to how it may affect if the parent is a Deferred Act for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipient.
Krishnamoorthi also today released a statement around Trump’s Birthright Citizenship Executive Order. He stated, “Turning our backs on immigrant communities in our country would not only affect thousands of hard-working families in America and devastate our economy, but would also go against the 14th Amendment of our Constitution. As the Supreme Court affirmed in 1898 in Wong Kim Ark v United States, all persons born in the United States are entitled to the rights of citizenship regardless of race or the immigration status of one’s parents. Some may falsely think they can take a pen and rewrite the Constitution as they please, but we will continue to defend the Constitution against all such attempts.”

Donald Trump, who overcame impeachments, criminal indictments and a pair of assassination attempts to win another term in the White House, will be sworn in as the 47th president on Monday, taking charge as Republicans assume unified control of Washington and set out to reshape the country's institutions. The event will draw notable attendees, including tech moguls Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg. What's more, this inauguration will make history as the first US presidential inaugural ceremony to be held indoors at the US Capitol in 40 years. The decision to move indoors was driven by the chilly weather conditions. In a surprising move, Trump launched a new cryptocurrency, dubbed $TRUMP, just hours before his inauguration. The meme coin has already surged to a whopping $9 million in market value, potentially boosting Trump's net worth. Potential Economic Shift with Trump’s Return:
Former President Donald Trump’s anticipated return to office could trigger significant changes in global economic dynamics. With his "America First" ideology, Trump 2.0 promises to reshape not only U.S. domestic policy but also its relations with global powers, especially in trade, energy, and finance.
"America First" Trade and Economic Policies:
Trump’s signature policy of "America First" is expected to dominate his economic agenda in a second term. This could include implementing stricter tariffs, renegotiating trade deals, and reducing international dependencies, which may create friction with trade partners. Global supply chains could be altered, especially with nations like China, Mexico, and European Union members. Countries may be forced to realign their trade strategies to navigate the new U.S. approach.
Reinstatement of Tariffs and Trade Wars:
One of Trump’s hallmark strategies in his first term was the use of tariffs, particularly against China. His return to power could see a reintroduction of aggressive trade policies, reigniting trade wars, particularly with China and possibly the EU. Such actions may disrupt global trade flows and affect industries worldwide, leading to price fluctuations and the potential relocation of manufacturing centers to avoid tariffs.
Shift from Multilateral to Bilateral Agreements:
Trump 2.0 is poised to reshape global economic dynamics with an emphasis on protectionism, deregulation, and shifting international relations. His policies could lead to trade disruptions, changes in energy markets, financial market volatility, and significant geopolitical realignments. Global markets and governments will need to adapt quickly to these new dynamics, potentially reshaping the world economy in unforeseen ways.
Under Trump 2.0, the U.S. is likely to pivot toward bilateral trade agreements over multilateral deals, such as the Paris Climate Agreement or World Trade Organization (WTO) frameworks. This shift could weaken existing global partnerships, while countries might be forced to negotiate new trade terms individually, changing the fabric of global trade relations and alliances.
Impact on Global Energy Markets:
Trump’s emphasis on achieving energy independence for the U.S. could have significant implications for global energy markets. His administration is likely to focus on maximizing U.S. oil, gas, and coal production while reducing reliance on foreign energy imports. This push for energy self-sufficiency could impact global energy prices, particularly in regions dependent on U.S. energy imports or fossil fuel exports, such as the Middle East, Russia, and Venezuela.
Tax Cuts and Deregulation:
In Trump’s previous term, tax cuts for corporations were central to his economic agenda. Trump 2.0 may push for similar corporate tax cuts, deregulation in key sectors, and reduction of business restrictions, aiming to spur economic growth. While this would likely benefit U.S. industries, it could spark concerns in other countries where environmental and labor protections might be threatened, affecting global market dynamics and international cooperation.
Geopolitical Tensions and Economic Sanctions:
Trump’s foreign policy approach may further escalate geopolitical tensions, particularly with adversarial nations such as Iran, North Korea, and Russia. Economic sanctions could become more common, potentially disrupting financial markets and international investments. Countries aligned with the U.S. could face pressures to support these policies, while adversaries may look to establish new economic partnerships to circumvent
U.S. sanctions, leading to new trade routes and alliances.
Financial Market Volatility and Global Investments:
Financial markets across the globe could experience volatility with the return of Trump’s economic policies. Investors may react to uncertainty regarding tariffs, trade wars, and changes in international policy frameworks. Global investment flows might shift based on the U.S. policy direction, with both opportunities and risks emerging for foreign markets. Currency values, stock markets, and commodity prices could be impacted as the global economy adjusts to Trump 2.0's economic strategies.
Immigration and Labor Market Effects:
Trump’s stance on immigration could also reshape the global labor market. A more restrictive immigration policy may reduce the influx of skilled labor into the U.S., impacting industries like technology, healthcare, and agriculture. Countries relying on remittances or sending workers abroad could see shifts in employment patterns and migration trends, further influencing global labor markets.
Legal and Regulatory Challenges:
Trump 2.0’s policies are expected to face legal challenges, both domestically and internationally. His moves to alter trade agreements, impose tariffs, or curb immigration may face opposition in courts, with foreign governments possibly pursuing legal action as well. These legal battles could create uncertainty in global economic strategies, as businesses and governments wait for judicial resolutions.

Anupam Kher plays political leader Jayprakash Narayan in Kangana Ranaut’s directorial ‘Emergency’

Kangana and her team provided extensive resources, including documentaries and videos, to help him understand Narayan’s convictions and contributions.
Recalling his memories of the Emergency, Kher said, “I was in drama school in 1975 and witnessed the chilling impact of dictatorship, like newspapers being banned and Kishore Kumar’s songs silenced on All India Radio.”
Praising Kangana as a director, Kher said, “She’s phenomenal and completely prepared. Her ability to guide actors while being in character as Indira Gandhi is remarkable.”
Kher emphasized the film’s relevance, calling it an insightful cinematic exploration of India’s post-Independence history, including the Emergency, the 1971 war, and the father-daughter relationship between Nehru and Indira Gandhi.

"We Will Do Everything To Make World Peaceful": Trump After Call With Xi Jinping
HiIndia Newsdesk
Washington: Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke by phone on Friday, days before the incoming US president returns to the White House, with both leaders vowing to take a positive approach to improving ties between the rival countries.
Xi Jinping said he hoped for a "good start" to relations with Donald Trump, who in
turn said "it is my expectation that we will solve many problems together, and starting immediately."
Trump in the election campaign threatened China and other US trading partners with huge tariffs, but he has also said he is open to talks with Xi, a leader he has long openly admired. The threat of a 10 percent tariff on Chinese products, in addition to existing tariffs dating back to Trump's first term, is driven by accusations that China allows fentanyl's chemical components to flow into Mexico and onto America where the drug causes 70,000 overdose deaths a year. "We discussed balancing Trade, Fentanyl, TikTok, and many other subjects," Trump said on his social media platform after their call. "President Xi and I will do everything possible to make the World more peaceful and safe!"

U.S. Short Seller Hindenburg Shuts. What does it mean for Adani in India?
Thursday morning on the stock exchange saw an unusual surge which many may not have seen coming. Soon as the news of Hindenburg Research in the U.S. started coming in, thousands of miles away in India, stocks of companies affiliated with Adani Group saw a steep rise – according to figures of up to 10 percent.
It may be noted that about twoyears-ago a 110-page report from the short seller accusing Adani group of conning the corporate world had left a massive dent in the groups’ reputation along with a financial crash. At the time of Hindenburg’s Adani expose, Gautam Adani was ranked as the fourth-richest man in the world.
The eight-year-old Hindenburg research was widely regarded as a fearless entity taking on some of the biggest tycoons. However, a sudden announcement by founder Nate Anderson of shutting down his company sent a tizzy in the corporate world.
Anderson in a letter expressed a desire to spend more time with friends and family behind this major decision.
It may be noted that Adani had denied all reports of stock market manipulation as detailed by Hindenburg calling them “an attack on India.” Quickly following the report that sent shockwaves in India, the Adani group lost over $100 billion, though the group had recovered since then.

Netanyahu's Office Says 'Deal To Release Hostages' Reached
Jerusalem: The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Friday that a "deal to release the hostages" had been reached and that he had ordered the political-security cabinet to convene later in the day.
"Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was informed by the negotiating team that agreements have been reached on a deal to release the hostages," his office
said in a statement.
His office had accused Hamas on Thursday of reneging on key parts of the agreement to extort last-minute concessions -- an allegation Hamas denied.
"The Prime Minister ordered the political-security cabinet to convene tomorrow (Friday). The government will then convene to approve the deal," Netanyahu's office said. It added that the families of the hostages had been informed and that preparations were being made to receive them upon their return.
If approved by Israel's cabinet, the truce agreement would begin on Sunday and involve the exchange of Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners, after which the terms of a permanent end to the war would be finalised.

Suchir Balaji, who raised ethical concerns about OpenAI’s practices, was found dead in his San Francisco apartment in November, just after his birthday. While authorities concluded it was suicide, Ms. Rao has called for an FBI investigation, citing lapses in the case.
“My son celebrated his birthday a day before he died. He was happy and had just received a gift from his father. Does this sound like someone depressed?” she asked. Ms. Rao claimed Balaji possessed incriminating documents against OpenAI that went missing after his death. She accused the company of silencing witnesses and influencing legal outcomes. “Everyone is suppressed. Even attorneys have been coerced into labeling it a suicide,” she alleged.
In a chilling accusation, Ms. Rao stated, “OpenAI attacked and killed my son. He had evidence against them they didn’t want exposed.” The story has sparked international attention, with Elon Musk sharing the interview on his X handle, calling it “Extremely concerning.” Balaji’s death has reignited debates about transparency and ethics in the AI industry, leaving unanswered questions about the power and secrecy of tech giants.

Trump's "Make America Great Again Victory Rally" took place at Capital One Arena, an indoor hockey and basketball venue that will also host some of Monday's inauguration festivities after forecasts of bitter cold prompted officials to move the planned outdoor events inside
Donald Trump told thousands of roaring supporters on Sunday that he would "fix every single crisis facing our country," taking a campaign-style victory lap inside a packed Washington arena a day before he returns to power with plans to aggressively reshape U.S. immigration and trade policy.
"Tomorrow, at noon, the curtain closes on four long years of American decline, and we begin a brand new day of American strength, prosperity, dignity and pride," he said.
Trump's "Make America Great Again Victory Rally" took place at Capital One Arena, an indoor hockey and basketball venue that will also host some of Monday's inauguration festivities after forecasts of bitter cold prompted officials to move the planned outdoor events inside.
The rally resembled the freewheeling campaign speeches that have been a Trump staple since his first White House run in 2016, with the former and future president delivering a mix of boasts, false claims and sweeping promises to the delight of the crowd. "This is the greatest political movement in American history, and 75 days ago, we achieved the most epic political victory our country has ever seen," he said. "Starting tomorrow, I will act with historic speed of strength and fix every single crisis facing our country."
The event marked his first major address in Washington since he delivered a speech on Jan. 6, 2021, to his supporters that preceded the storming of the U.S. Capitol.
Trump's rally, along with his inaugural address on Monday, could preview the tone he plans to adopt during his second White House term.

The initial 42-day truce will see 33 hostages returned and hundreds of Palestinian prisoners released. Chicago Immigration Raids Under Review After Leak
CHICAGO, IL – President-elect Donald Trump's administration is reconsidering planned immigration raids in Chicago after details of the operation were leaked, said Tom Homan, Trump's designated "border czar" and former acting ICE director. “The administration hasn’t decided yet,” Homan stated Saturday, noting that the leak is under review. Neither ICE officials nor Trump’s transition team have commented. Rights groups had earlier claimed large-scale immigration sweeps were set for multiple U.S. cities after Trump’s
inauguration on Monday, with Chicago among the first targets. Dulce Ortiz of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights told Reuters
that 200 ICE agents were expected to launch raids at 5 a.m. Monday, focusing on individuals starting their daily routines. The operation was expected to last several days. Similar actions were reportedly planned in cities like New York and Miami. The Wall Street Journal suggested Chicago’s raids could involve hundreds of agents as part of a week-long effort. Trump has prioritized mass deportations, stating, “We have to get the criminals out of our country.” Homan confirmed operations would target approximately 700,000 individuals under deportation orders, but further plans remain uncertain as officials address the leak.
said Hitesh Trivedi, Associate Hindu Chaplain at Rutgers.
Some Hindu students and community leaders voiced relief at the decision, criticizing efforts to create a “caste consciousness” on campus. Rutgers assured that its policies continue to protect all members of its community. CoHNA President Nikunj Trivedi commended Rutgers for basing its decision on reason and urged fairness in future surveys, drawing parallels to a 2023 California legal precedent dismissing caste discrimination allegations against Indian American engineers.

New Genetic Disorder Honors Garg and Mishra, Pioneers in Medical Science
BALTIMORE, MD – A groundbreaking genetic disorder, Garg-Mishra Progeroid Syndrome (GMPGS), has been named in honor of its discoverers, Dr. Abhimanyu Garg and Dr. Prashant Mishra. This rare condition is linked to a mutation in the TOMM7 gene, essential for mitochondrial function. GMPGS causes rapid aging and is marked by severe dwarfism, shortened lifespan, underdeveloped jaw bone (mandibular hypoplasia), small eyes (microphthalmia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and partial fat loss in the limbs (lipodystrophy). The syndrome was first identified in 2022 in a 21-yearold Malaysian patient exhibiting extreme dwarfism, vision impairment, and weighing only 46 pounds.
Dr. Garg, a Professor of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center, has pioneered research on metabolic diseases and lipodystrophy, including FDA-approved leptin therapy. With over 170 scientific pub-lications,
GMPGS causes rapid aging and is marked by severe dwarfism, shortened lifespan, underdeveloped jaw bone (mandibular hypoplasia), small eyes (microphthalmia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and partial fat loss in the limbs (lipodystrophy).
his contributions are widely recognized. Dr. Mishra, an Associate Professor at the Children’s Medical Center Research Institute, focuses on mitochondrial diseases, advancing treatments for cellular dysfunction.
The McKusick-Nathans Institute of Genetic Medicine at Johns Hopkins officially named the syndrome to honor Garg and Mishra’s pivotal work. This discovery not only sheds light on genetic and metabolic disor-ders but also paves the way for future research and therapeutic innovations.

The settlement, pending court approval, requires the hotel to issue a statement welcoming Arab and Arab American guests, implement an antidiscrimination policy, train staff on Title II obligations, and conduct outreach to Arab communities. Additionally, the hotel must appoint a compliance officer and provide reg-ular reports to the Justice Department.
Title II authorizes the Justice Department to enforce policy changes but does not permit monetary damages for victims. This case underscores the department's commitment to combating discrimination in public accommodations nationwide.
WASHINGTON, DC – On January 14, Donald Trump unveiled his plans to establish the External Revenue Ser-vice (ERS), a new agency designed to collect tariffs, duties, and revenue from foreign entities benefiting from trade with the United States. The initiative aims to reduce the nation's reliance on domestic taxes collected through the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
Criticizing the current revenue model, Trump highlighted the need for change. “For far too long, we have relied on taxing our Great People using the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Through soft and pathetically weak trade agreements, the American economy has delivered growth and prosperity to the world while taxing ourselves,” Trump stated

on Truth Social.
The ERS is set to launch on January 20, 2025, coinciding with Trump's return to office. He emphasized that the agency would ensure foreign entities profiting from U.S. trade "pay their fair share." Trump declared, “It is time for that to change. I will create the External Revenue Service to collect tariffs, duties, and all revenue from foreign sources. January 20, 2025, will mark the birth of the ERS. Make America Great Again!” Currently, tariffs and duties are collected by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which operates under the Department of Homeland Security. The IRS, responsible for domestic tax collection, functions under the Treasury Secretary. The announcement of the ERS represents a significant shift in the approach to federal revenue generation.

Dainna Ramchandani is based in NJ and was raised in Egypt, about her love for sari she says, "The combination of saree and snow is magical and takes me down the memory lane when Kajol danced in suraj hua madham and just like that this is my Bollywood moment."
Prachi Gupta shows her pretty sari in the Boston snow. A Chicago native, Gupta says, “Sari is an elegant attire for women, and a beautiful expression of my culture. I love to see how the beautiful colors of Indian handlooms blend with white snow.”
Shivani Pandit
lives in Atlanta, Georgia. About her pretty in red look in the snow she says, “It got snow only for one day this year in Atlanta and I love to dress up. I used to watch Bollywood actresses wearing sari in snow in Bollywood movies. I feel more beautiful in a sari. The sari, I wore on snow day is 13 years old!”
Sari in Snow
– Desi Women Display Ethnic Fashion
Reminiscent of the Bollywood divas in 80’s and 90’s wearing sheer chiffons on snowy alps, many desi women took to Instagram to channel their ethnic fashion in heavy North America snow making it a viral trend
Zofeen Maqsood
It has been a sufficiently snowy winter this year, for most parts of America. As powerful winter storms continue to batter eastern, midwestern as well as southern parts of the country, desi ladies had a heartwarming idea to have some fun in the snow. After unusual amounts of snow were seen in the Dallas area in the past few days, some women started posing in the snow dressed in a sari – soon the trend caught on across America and went viral on the internet with several Indian women posing with their finest silks on pristine snow.
Hi India caught some women making the most of the frigid cold weather by giving us fun fashion moments.
Julia Chandrasekaran who is based in the suburbs of Dallas, says, “I’m wearing a saree from PIN - It’s Preloved; profits going local charities. I’ve been married to my desi husband from Chennai for over 20 years but was intimidated yet intrigued by the art of the saree. It wasn’t until I adopted daughters from India that I felt the need to wear and celebrate this and other parts of the culture. My daughters should be able to embrace their culture and not feel like they are missing anything; including a mother that can wear a saree and share that with them and teach them how to wear it. Now I teach other adoptive parents who are not desi but with desi kids how to do the same. Embracing that and flaunting the sari in the snow when others may turn their noses up at it is part of that sisterhood and supporting our community and my daughters.”
an entrepreneur, CEO of Kotton Sense and Saffron Poise Events and Creative Director of the Bollywood Musical Gulzarish took this picture of her in a sari in Alaska. She says, “I have been an ardent advocate of wearing sarees, especially here in the USA. Started as a fun weekly once saree draping promise with a friend which turned into passion for wearing sarees. Stores, beaches, mountains, ships, glaciers, cruises -- I have worn a saree, anywhere and everywhere in the US.”
Purvasha Sahoo,
a lifestyle content creator living in Austin,TX says, “My work celebrates fashion, travel, and everyday moments. Posing in the snow wearing a saree was for a video content on my Instagram page. I wanted to live out my Bollywood dream and showcase Indian heritage blending elegantly with the winter wonderland scenery.”

Rep. Pramila Jayapal Speaks Out Against Laken Riley Act's Immigration Policies
WASHINGTON, DC- Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) has voiced strong opposition to the Laken Riley Act, labeling it a “highway to mass deportation.” The controversial bill, which mandates detention for undocumented immigrants accused of crimes like theft or burglary without requiring a conviction, has drawn sig-nificant attention for its potential to bypass due
process.
Jayapal criticized the legislation on Twitter, stating, “This is a bad bill. It removes due process and subjects any undocumented person who is arrested or charged with shoplifting or theft to mandatory detention — no trial or conviction needed. It’s all fear mongering about immigrants, not making people safer.”
Appearing on MSNBC’s The Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart, Jayapal expanded on her concerns, emphasizing the bill’s far-reaching consequences.
“You can have any number of people picked up and put into the criminal justice system simply for being accused, with no conviction, no admission of guilt,” she explained. She highlighted how the act targets accusations rather than proven guilt, saying, “This says you can just be accused.”
The Senate advanced the bill last week with an 84-9 procedural vote, gaining bipartisan support. The House had previously passed the bill, which, if enacted, would mandate detention without requiring a trial or con-viction, raising alarm among immigrant rights advocates.

State Senator Dhingra Advocates for Victim-Focused Sexual Assault Bill
OLYMPIA, WA — State Senator Manka Dhingra, joined by students from Lake Washington High School, has introduced a bill to combat drink spiking in bars and nightclubs. The legislation mandates establishments serving alcohol to provide drink test kits to detect date rape drugs and display prominent warnings about drink spiking risks.
Inspired by a similar California law enacted in 2023, the bill aims to curb drink spiking and sexual assault. A 2016 study by the American Psychological Association revealed that over 7% of students reported being drugged,
while the CDC estimates one in four women and one in twenty-six men have experienced rape or attempted rape.
“These kits could make nightlife safer, empowering individuals to detect threats before they escalate into crimes,” Dhingra stated. The bill ensures test kits are available at reasonable costs, with businesses exempt from liability for inaccurate results.
Dhingra also championed SB 5937, an omnibus bill addressing sexual assault in the legal system. It pro-posed expanding protections, streamlining crime victim benefits, covering forensic exam costs, and allow-ing children 13 and older to consent to exams.
