Donald Trump Vows Death Penalty For 'Rapists, Murderers, Monsters'

Former US President Bill Clinton discharged from hospital after flu

HiIndia Newsdesk

Washington, United States: Donald Trump hit out Tuesday at Joe Biden for commuting the sentences of almost every American federal prisoner on death row, as the president-elect prepares to replace the Democrat in the White House. President Biden, in his final month in office, announced Monday he was converting the sentences of 37 of the 40 federal inmates awaiting execution to life without the possibility of parole. They included nine people convicted of murdering fellow prisoners, four for murders committed during bank robberies and one who killed a prison guard. "Joe Biden just commuted the Death Sentence on 37 of the worst killers in our Country," Trump posted on Truth Social, his social media platform. "When you hear the acts of each, you won't believe that he did this. Makes no sense. Relatives and friends are further devastated. They can't believe this is happening!" Biden had imposed a moratorium on

Biden rebuked the inmates he had spared and "their despicable acts," but said he had been guided by "my conscience and my experience" to prevent the incoming Trump administration from resuming executions. Elon Musk's curious Weather and airport delays disrupt American Christmas travel fixation with Britain

US President-elect Donald Trump has appointed British TV executive Mark Burnett, who produced him on The Apprentice, as his special envoy to the UK. Trump said it was his "great honour" to pick his former colleague for the role, which is separate to the position of US ambassador to the UK. "Mark will work to enhance diplomatic relations, focusing on areas of mutual interest, including trade, investment opportunities, and cultural exchanges," he added. Burnett said in a statement: "I am truly honoured to serve The United States of America and President Trump as his Special Envoy to the United Kingdom." He created The Apprentice and produced it along with a range of other reality TV programmes, winning 13 Emmy Awards.

Trump confirmed he would direct the Justice Department to "vigorously pursue the death penalty to protect American families and children from violent rapists, murderers, and monsters."

Former US President Bill Clinton has been discharged from the hospital after being treated for the flu, a spokesperson said on Tuesday. "He and his family are deeply grateful for the exceptional care provided by the team at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and are touched by the kind messages and well wishes he received," Angel Ureña wrote on X, formerly Twitter. Clinton was admitted to Georgetown Un i v e r s i t y Me d i c a l C e nt e r i n Washington, DC on Monday evening for tests and observation after developing a fever. The 78-year-old was last admitted to the hospital for six days in 2021 in California after developing an infection that reached his blood.

Millions of Americans across the US are bracing for difficult weather conditions during the Christmas holiday, with storms threatening to further disrupt one of the busiest travel periods of the year. Up and down the east coast, the first storm of the winter blanketed cities from Boston to Baltimore with ice and

snow. Meanwhile, California residents are cleaning up the aftermath of a storm that brought hurricane-forced winds, flooding and high surf on Monday, killing one man. The weather events further complicate travel plans for Americas who are already facing air travel delays following a ground stop of American Airlines flights due to a technology issue.

American Airlines resumes flights after technical issue

HiIndia Newsdesk

American Airlines has resumed flights after suspending its services for around an hour on Tuesday due to a technical issue that impacted the systems needed

to release its planes. The nationwide halt was cancelled just before 13:00 GMT, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The disruption came during one of the busiest travel days of the year as passengers made journeys on Christmas Eve. In a statement, the airline said a "vendor technology issue" had caused the issue and it was "all hands on deck" to minimise further disruption.

In 2012, Elon Musk had just completed a business trip to London and Oxford. "Just returned… I met with many interesting people," he wrote on Twitter. "I really like Britain!" Fast-forward to 2024, and Musk's views on Britain are a little different. "Civil war is inevitable" … "Britain is going full Stalin"… "The people of Britain have had enough of a tyrannical police state". These are just some of his recent comments on X, as he renamed the site after he bought it. He has repeatedly got into spats with politicians including Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, he has amplified voices on the right and far-right online and is in talks to donate to Reform UK, according to the party's leader Nigel Farage. So why has Musk's relationship with America's closest ally apparently soured and what, if anything, does he hope to achieve?

Greenland and the Panama Canal aren't for sale. Why is Trump threatening to take them? HiIndia Newsdesk

President-elect Donald Trump ran on a platform of isolating the US from foreign conflicts like the Ukraine war, increasing tariffs on foreign trade partners, and rebuilding domestic manufacturing. But in recent days he has suggested a more outwardly aggressive approach for his foreign policy. At first, he joked about Canada being an additional US state. Since, he has threatened to take back control of the Panama Canal. He also reiterated a desire from his first term to own the autonomous Danish territory of Greenland, which is not for sale. The US is unlikely to take control of any of these regions. But these statements could indicate that Trump's "America First" vision includes flexing the superpower's muscle beyond its borders for US trade and national security interests. On Sunday, Trump told a conservative conference in Arizona that Panama was charging US ships "ridiculous, highly unfair" fees to use its namesake canal. After taking charge of building the canal in the early 20th century, the US turned full control over to Panama in the 1970s via a treaty. But this week, Trump said that if the "rip off " did not stop, he would demand the canal be returned to the US – though he did not specify how. Trump added he did not want the Panama Canal "falling into the wrong hands" and specifically cited China, which has significant interests in the waterway. "There's a real US national security interest... in controlling its neutrality," Will Freeman, a fellow on Latin American studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, said of Trump's remarks.

"Trump's statement is mostly about that." China is the second-largest user of the Panama Canal after the US, according to data. It has major economic investments in the country as well. In 2017, Panama cut diplomatic ties with Taiwan and recognised it as part of China, a major win for Beijing. The Panama Canal is not only essential for US trade in the Pacific, Mr Freeman said - in the event of any military conflict with China, it would be needed to move US ships and other assets.

He also noted Trump's frequent comments about trade partners' unfair treatment of the US, as well as the president-elect's pledge to sharply increase tariffs on foreign goods, particularly those from China. Trump's complaints about shipping fees seemed to reflect his views on trade, Mr Freeman said. While the statements might be "coercive", said Mr Freeman, it remained to be seen "whether canal authorities lower fees on US cargo in response to the threat". Panama's President José Raúl Mulino has released a statement saying that the canal and the surrounding area belonged to his country - and would remain so.

Trump eyes Greenland

Over the weekend, Trump said in a social media post that the US "feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity" for reasons of national security and global freedom. The US maintains Pituffik Space Base in Greenland. The territory is rich

with natural resources, including rare earth minerals and oil, and occupies a strategic location for trade as global powers seek to expand their reach in the Arctic Circle. Russia, in particular, sees the region as a strategic opportunity. Trump floated the idea of purchasing Greenland in 2019, during his first term as president, and it never came to fruition. Greenland's prime minister, Múte B Egede, responded to Trump's latest comments this week: "We are not for sale and we will not be for sale." Still, Trump continued emphasising his public statements online. On Truth Social, Trump's account showed an image of an American flag being planted in the middle of the Panama Canal. His second-eldest son, Eric Trump, posted an image on X that showed the US adding Greenland, the Panama Canal and Canada to an Amazon online shopping cart. For Trump, promises to use America's might to its advantage helped propel his two successful presidential campaigns. It was a tactic he used during his first presidency, threatening tariffs and the deployment of "armed soldiers" to steer Mexico into beefing up enforcement along its US border. Heading into his second term, Trump could plan to use a similar playbook once he takes office on 20 January. While it remains to be seen what will happen, Denmark has expressed a willingness to work with his administration. It also announced a huge boost in defence spending for Greenland, hours after Trump repeated his desire to purchase the Arctic territory.

Bald eagle officially declared US Congress Passes Bill To Avert Government Shutdown US national bird after 250 years The late-night vote capped a frantic week that saw Presidentelect Donald Trump and his billionaire ally Elon Musk defeat an initial bipartisan deal, throwing Congress into disarray. HiIndia Newsdesk

The U.S. Congress passed a spending bill early Saturday, narrowly avoiding a government shutdown. Approved by the Senate 38 minutes past the midnight deadline in an 85-11 vote, the bill now awaits President Joe Biden's signature. The legislation funds the government through March 14, provides $100 billion for disaster relief, $10 billion for farmers, and extends farm and food aid programs. Provisions like a lawmaker pay raise and pharmacy regulations were removed

after opposition from former Presidentelect Donald Trump and Elon Musk. Republicans criticized the lack of spending cuts, with Speaker Mike Johnson calling it a temporary measure ahead of Republican majorities next year. Democrats accused Republicans of yielding to Musk’s influence, especially over China-related provisions. The bill averts shutdown disruptions to federal services and avoids significant economic losses during the holiday season. However, it delays addressing the $36 trillion debt ceiling, setting up a January debate.

Russia launches 'inhuman' Christmas Day attacks, Ukraine says

Nearly three years into the war, the strikes wounded at least six people in the northeastern city of Kharkiv and killed one in the region of Dnipropetrovsk, the governors there said HiIndia Newsdesk

Russia launched a major assault on Ukraine's energy infrastructure and cities with cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and drones on Wednesday, which Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy condemned as an “inhuman” Christmas attack. The strikes, nearly three years into the war, left at least six injured in Kharkiv and one dead in Dnipropetrovsk, according to regional governors. Over 500,000 people in Kharkiv were without heating in freezing temperatures, with blackouts reported in Kyiv and other areas. Zelenskiy stated that over 70 missiles and more than 100 drones were used in the assault, with Ukraine’s air defenses intercepting 59 missiles and 54 drones. The attacks coincided with Ukraine’s celebration of Christmas on December 25, a shift from the traditional January 7 date observed in Russia, symbolizing a break from Russian influence. Ukraine’s Energy Minister German Galushchenko noted widespread damage to the power sector, with private energy company DTEK reporting severe harm to generating facilities in the year’s 13th large-scale assault. The attacks prompted international condemnation, with U.S. Ambassador Bridget Brink denouncing Russia for "weaponizing winter" and targeting civilians and critical infrastructure. DTEK’s CEO Maxim Timchenko urged Ukraine’s allies to provide air defense ammunition to safeguard essential energy facilities. There has been no official comment from Russia on the strikes, which have compounded Ukraine's energy challenges since spring.

China jails ex-football head coach for bribery HiIndia Newsdesk

The former coach of the Chinese national men's football team has been sentenced to 20 years in jail for bribery, state media reported. Li Tie, who also played for Everton in the English Premier League, confessed earlier this year to fixing matches, accepting bribes, and offering bribes to get the top coaching job. The case shows how President Xi Jinping's anticorruption crackdown has cut through sport, banking and the military. Li, who was the national team's head coach from January 2020 to December 2021, pleaded guilty in March to taking over $16 million in bribes.

WASHINGTON: (Reuters) - The Biden administration announced on Monday a last-minute trade investigation into older Chinesemade "legacy" semiconductors that could heap more U.S. tariffs on chips from China that power everyday goods from autos to washing machines to telecoms gear. U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai said the probe aims to protect American and other semiconductor producers from China's massive state-driven buildup of domestic chip supply. The "Section 301" probe, launched four weeks before President-elect Donald Trump takes office on Jan. 20, will be handed over to his administration in January for completion, Biden administration officials said. The effort could offer Trump a ready avenue to begin imposing some of the hefty 60% tariffs he has threatened on Chinese imports. Departing President Joe Biden has already imposed a 50% U.S. tariff on Chinese semiconductors that starts on Jan. 1. His administration also has tightened export curbs on advanced artificial intelligence and memory chips and chipmaking equipment.

SPECIAL STORY

Canada Overhauls Express Entry System, New Rules To Impact Indian Aspirants the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, and Canadian Experience Class, as well as parts of the Provincial Nominee Program.Under the system, eligible candidates can create their profiles on the official website and enter the pool. Then candidates with the most points in rounds are invited by the Canadian government. After receiving the application, candidates are invited to apply for the permanent residence (PR) programme, they have to fill out the application, which will be reviewed by the government and a decision will be taken.

HiIndia Newsdesk

Ottawa: Indian professionals seeking to migrate to Canada for better job opportunities may face new challenges, as the North American country announced significant changes to its Express Entry immigration system. Changes have been introduced in the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) that governs the eligibility of a candidate for a permanent immigration programme. As per the recent release issued by the Canadian government, the new change, under which candidates will no longer receive additional points for having a job offer, will be instituted as early as spring of 2025.

Canada Ends Flagpoling

What Did The Government Say?

The move, introduced as a temporary measure, is aimed at curbing fraudulent immigration practices by removing the incentive to illegally buy or sell labour market impact assessments to improve a candidate's chances of being selected to come to Canada as a permanent resident. "We are taking important steps to reduce fraud while continuing to attract the skilled talent our economy needs," said Marc Miller, Canada's Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship. "Immigration has always been a cornerstone of Canada's success, and we remain committed to welcoming the best and brightest to Canada so

that everyone has access to the quality jobs, homes and supports they need to thrive," he added.

Who Is Impacted?

Once the removal of CRS points for a job offer is instituted, the changes will impact candidates pursuing permanent residence through the Express Entry system, including those currently working in Canada temporarily. "Once the change is introduced, it will apply to all candidates with job offers in the pool as well as new candidates entering the pool," the government said.

Who Gets Immunity?

However, the new rules won't impact

candidates who have already been invited to apply for permanent residence (PR) with a CRS score that still includes points for a job offer (under the "arranged employment" criteria). It will also not apply to candidates who have already submitted an application for PR to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) which is currently being processed.

What Is the Express Entry Immigration System?

Express Entry is Canada's flagship online system that is used to manage immigration applications of skilled workers from programs including

The Justine Trudeau government, as part of Canada's Border Plan, also announced that work and study permits will no longer be provided to flagpolers at a port of entry, effective immediately. Flagpoling occurs when foreign nationals who hold temporary resident status in Canada, leave Canada and, after a visit to the United States or St. Pierre and Miquelon, reenter to access immigration services at a port of entry. "This practice has taken up significant resources at the border, diverting Canadian and American officers away from important enforcement activities and has contributed to wait times for cross-border travellers," the government said.

A Moscow court has sentenced a Russian-born US citizen to 15 years in prison on espionage charges, Russian news agencies report. Businessman Gene Spector was already serving a three-and-a-half-year sentence, having been originally arrested in 2020 on bribery charges. Last year, he was also accused of spying. Details of the alleged offences have not been publicly released due to the secretive nature of the case, agencies report, and the trial took place behind closed doors. Russia has taken a number of highprofile American prisoners in recent times - one of whom, journalist Evan Gershkovich, was released earlier this year as part of the biggest swap deal between the countries for decades. The US Department of State is yet to comment on Spector's case. The BBC

has approached it for a statement. Sp ector's 15-year s entence was reportedly due to be served in a strictregime penal colony. It comprises 13 years for the new conviction, plus the time he had left to serve on the prior one. An earlier fine of 14 million roubles ($140,000; £112,000) was also upheld. In the earlier charges, Spector was accused in 2020 of acting as an intermediary in a bribery case relating to an assistant of Russia's former deputy prime minister. He pleaded guilty. Spector, whose Russian name is Yevgeny Mironovich, was born in 1972 in what is now St Petersburg, and was again living the city with his family, the agency RIA Novosti reported. At some point in his life, he moved to the US and obtained citizenship, according to another news agency, Tass. Back in Russia, he went on to lead Medpolimerprom: a group of companies that make medical supplies. The news comes just months after a landmark prisoner swap. In August, 24 people were involved in an exchange between Russia and some Western countries including the US and Germany.

India's economy is likely to grow by 6.5 per cent in the current and the next financial year, an EY report said, attributing lower than anticipated expansion in the September quarter to fall in private consumption expenditure and gross fixed capital formation. Real GDP growth eased to a sevenquarter low of 5.4 per cent in JulySeptember -- the second quarter of the current 2024-25 fiscal year. This was compared to 6.7 per cent in the preceding quarter. This was primarily because two domestic demand components -- private final consumption expenditure and gross fixed capital formation -- together accounted for a fall of 1.5 percentage points. "One outstanding feature of demand is the slowdown in investment, as reflected in the growth of gross fixed capital formation. This growth is estimated at 5.4 per cent in 2QFY25, which is a six-quarter low. Apart from the fact that private investment demand has

not picked up, there was a contraction in government of India's investment expenditure growth, which has remained negative at (-)15.4 per cent in first half of FY25," the report said. It continued to be negative even in October 2024 at (-)8.4 per cent, implying that in the first seven months government's investment expenditure

growth has remained negative at (-)14.7 per cent. "In fact, to meet the budgeted target of Government of India's capital expenditure growth of 17.1 per cent over CGA actuals for FY24, we now require a growth of 60.5 per cent in the remaining five months of the fiscal year FY25." The EY Economy Watch December 2024 forecasts India's real GDP growth at 6.5

per cent for FY25 (April 2024 to March 2024 fiscal year) and FY26. It also highlights the importance of reforming India's fiscal responsibility framework to achieve the Viksit Bharat vision by 2047-48. A recalibrated approach is vital for sustainable debt management, eliminating government dissavings, and driving investmentled growth, paving the way for India's transformation into a developed economy, it said. "With global conditions remaining uncertain and global trade likely to be fragmented, India may have to continue to rely largely on domestic demand and services exports. In the medium-term, India's real GDP growth prospects can be kept at 6.5 per cent per year provided the GoI accelerates its capital expenditure growth in the remaining part of the current fiscal year and comes up with a medium-term investment pipeline with participation from the GoI and state governments and both their respective public sector entities, and the private corporate sector," it said.

The former CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch (A&F) has dementia and late onset Alzheimer's disease, his legal team has said in a court document filed in New York. Lawyers for Mike Jeffries have requested a hearing to determine whether he is mentally fit to stand trial on federal sex trafficking charges. The 80-year-old was arrested alongside his partner in October and charged with running an international sex trafficking and prostitution business. Both men have pleaded not guilty. A so-called competency hearing has been scheduled for June next year. Mr Jeffries, who ran US clothing brand A&F for two decades, is accused of running a sex trafficking and prostitution business from at least 2008-15. US prosecutors allege that he used his wealth, power and status "to traffic men for his own sexual pleasure", and for the pleasure of his British partner Matthew Smith, 61. They said the couple, alongside a middleman James Jacobson, 71, used force, fraud and coercion to make vulnerable, aspiring models engage in violent and exploitative sex acts.

Chocolate maker Cadbury has been dropped from the list of royal warrants for the first time in 170 years. The Birmingham-based chocolatier was awarded its first royal warrant as chocolate and cocoa manufacturers by Queen Victoria in 1854, but it has lost its royal endorsement under King Charles. Cadbury's US owners, Mondelez International, said it was disappointed to have been stripped of its warrant. The King has granted royal warrants to 386 companies that previously held warrants from Queen Elizabeth II, including John Lewis, Heinz and Nestle. Companies holding the Royal Warrant of Appointment, granted for up to five years, are recognised for providing goods or services to the monarchy. Among the King's new list of warrant holders are many firms selling food and drink, such as Moet and Chandon, Weetabix and chocolate makers

Bendicks and Prestat Ltd. Warrant holders are allowed to use the coat of arms of the royal they are associated with on packaging, as part of advertising or on stationery. Earlier this year, the King was urged by campaign group B4Ukraine to withdraw warrants from companies "still operating in Russia" after the invasion of Ukraine, naming Mondelez and consumer goods firm Unilever, which has also been stripped of the endorsement. "Whilst we are disappointed to be one of hundreds of other businesses and brands in the UK to not have a new warrant awarded, we are proud to have previously held one, and we fully respect the decision." a Mondelez spokesperson said. Unilever added it was "very proud" of the long history its brands had supplying the royal household, most recently receiving a warrant from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

The Man Who Showed Cannes India's Got Talent

I

n 1976, Indian cinema embraced a new wave of storytelling marked by bold themes and fresh perspectives. Shyam Benegal, a visionary director who had already stirred the cinematic waters with Ankur (1973), reached a significant milestone with Nishant (1975), a film that competed for the Palme d’Or at Cannes. Benegal, along with leading ladies Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil, arrived at Cannes without the fanfare or funds typical of international film promotions. Instead, Benegal’s ingenuity shone through. He proposed an unconventional strategy: Azmi and Patil would walk the promenade in their finest South Indian silk saris, standing out amid beachwear-clad attendees. This attention-grabbing move doubled as a promotion tactic, drawing audiences to their screening despite the lack of resources. Smita, lacking the required saris, borrowed them with Benegal’s guidance, exemplifying the collaborative spirit of the team. Nishant featured a stellar ensemble cast, including Smita Patil, Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Girish Karnad, and Amrish Puri, all of whom worked under modest conditions. Benegal’s sets were far from luxurious—actors participated in various aspects of production, driven by their shared belief in his vision. The collaborative nature of these films made them unique, with actors playing roles large and small without concern for stardom. The film explored themes of social injustice and power dynamics in rural India. Shabana Azmi had a more prominent role, but Smita Patil, in her debut, captivated audiences with her natural performance. Nishant won critical acclaim at Cannes and earned the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi. Benegal’s work in the 1970s, including Ankur, Manthan (1976), and Bhumika (1977), redefined Indian cinema, giving rise to the New Cinema movement. He introduced talents like Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, and Neena Gupta, fostering a culture of commitment and passion for meaningful storytelling. Nishant marked not just the end of a dark night but also the dawn of a brave new era for Indian films.

Jasprit Bumrah like Malcolm Marshall in reading batters and conditions: Ravi Shastri

Arrest Warrant for Robin Uthappa Over PF Fraud

Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Jasprit Bumrah is the leading wicket-taker in the series, with 21 scalps in the first three Tests. The Melbourne Cricket Ground has been the fast bowler's favourite hunting ground. HiIndia Newsdesk

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri heaped praise on Jasprit Bumrah's ability to quickly read an opposition batter's strengths and weaknesses as well as the playing conditions, likening the fast bowler to the legendary Malcolm Marshall. Bumrah has been leading India's charge in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, breaking records at will in Australia. Bumrah has taken 21 wickets in three Tests at a staggering average of 10.90. No other bowler in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy has managed to claim more than 15 wickets so far after three Tests. The Indian pace-bowling spearhead has been head and shoulders above the rest with his remarkable ability to adapt to the conditions in Australia. Bumrah also stood in for Rohit Sharma in the series opener, leading the team to a commanding 295-run victory in Perth. “He’s a terrific reader of the game when it comes to batsmen. I thought when I played the best bowler I played against was Malcolm Marshall, because of his ability to suss out conditions, read batsmen’s strengths and weaknesses. I think Bumrah is in that category. He’s

so quick to suss the strengths and weaknesses of a player," Ravi Shastri told Fox Cricket. “He’s taken close to 200 wickets and close to a hundred in India, and he’s taken

those at 17. In India, you must realise the ball starts reversing, because of the rough conditions. So if he doesn’t take wickets with the new ball, he’s dangerous at the end.” Bumrah, with 53 wickets, is already the leading wicket-taker for India in Australia in Test cricket, going past Kapil Dev's tally of 51 in the third Test in Brisbane. The Indian fast bowler needs one more wicket to become the most successful in the country at Melbourne Cricket Ground in Tests. With 15 wickets, he is currently tied with Anil Kumble. Bumrah will be key to India's success in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. With Mohammed Shami ruled out, Bumrah will hope for better support from fellow pacers, including Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep. Meanwhile, Ravi Shastri said he expects a baptism by fire for teenage opener Sam Konstas, who is all set to make his Test debut in Melbourne on Thursday. Bumrah made life difficult for Nathan McSweeney, who was dropped after the first three Tests of the series. "Bumrah is up for the challenge, he loves bowling at the MCG. I remember his sixwicket haul when I was a coach when he just dismantled Australia," Shastri said.

Former India cricketer Vinod Kambli, admitted to the ICU of a private hospital in Thane district, developed a fever on Tuesday, but his condition was stable, doctors treating him said on Tuesday. Kambli (52) is responding to the treatment for urinary tract infections for which he was admitted at Akruti Hospital near Bhiwandi town on Saturday (December 21), Dr Vivek Trivedi told PTI. Trivedi is heading the medical team that is supervising the former cricketer's health. Doctors were planning to do

an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) on the former India batter, but since he has developed a fever, a decision on the non-invasive medical procedure will be taken later, he said. The MRI procedure has been necessitated after a series of medical examinations conducted earlier revealed clots in his brain, Trivedi said. Kambli is likely to be shifted out of the ICU within a day or two and discharged after about four days, he said. He said the condition of the Mumbaibased former cricketer was critical four days back when he had an extreme urinary infection as puss had got collected in his bladder.

As Team India takes on Australia during the fourth Test of the series at the Boxing Day Test, they would have to be cautious against lethal left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc, who is not only in a fantastic form in the series but is also approaching a big milestone, ESPNCricinfo reported. The 34-year-old left-armer is just five scalps away from completing 700 international wickets and he will become only fourth Australian bowler after spinner Shane Warne (1,001 scalps), Glenn McGrath (949 scalps) and Brett Lee (718 scalps) to achieve this milestone.

Trouble For Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi Lt Governor Allows Probe Agency To Prosecute Him HiIndia Newsdesk

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is facing an uphill battle to retain power as New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Jagmeet Singh, a key ally, has announced plans to move a no-confidence motion in the House of Commons on January 27. Singh accused Trudeau of failing Canadians, stating, "This government's time is up." The no-confidence motion has gained support from Bloc Quebecois, leaving Trudeau’s Liberal government, already a minority since losing NDP backing, with slim chances of survival. Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, a vocal critic of the Liberals, has long pushed for an early election.

Trump to Europe: Buy US Oil and Gas or Face Heavy Tariffs HiIndia Newsdesk

Washington, DC: Donald Trump, gearing up for his second term as US President, has turned his attention to the European Union, demanding action to address the "tremendous" trade imbalance. Writing on his platform Truth Social, Trump insisted the EU must purchase more American oil and gas or face steep tariffs, stating, "It is TARIFFS all the way!!!" The US trade deficit with the EU stands at $202.5 billion, according to 2022 data. American imports from the EU totaled $553.3 billion, while exports lagged at $350.8 billion. Trump has long criticized what he calls unfair trade practices, previously accusing Europe of

"riding on the back of the US" and threatening to cut excess NATO funding unless Europe increases its contributions. At Mar-a-Lago, Trump lamented, "Our country loses to everybody," blaming past administrations' "bad deals." He believes tariffs are key to reversing this trend, claiming they will "make our country rich again." He has

already directed his team to draft executive orders imposing sweeping tariffs on imports and tightening immigration laws, vowing to act on his first day back in office. Trump’s hardline stance extends beyond Europe. He announced a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico and an initial 10% tariff on Chinese goods. In response, the EU has sought alternatives, signing a significant free trade agreement with Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay. European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen praised the deal, calling it a "trade bridge" amid rising global isolationism. Whether tariffs deliver Trump’s promise to "make America great again" remains uncertain.

DALLAS, TXLuxury fashion retailer Neiman Marcus, based in Dallas, Texas, has reignited controversy by relisting $940 “Ganesha Cufflinks” on its website. The sterling silver rhodium-plated accessories, reportedly hand-painted over seven hours, depict the sacred Hindu deity Lord Ganesha. This follows a similar incident in April 2021, when the retailer removed the item after protests from the Hindu community. Rajan Zed, President of the Universal Society of Hinduism, who led the earlier protests, has condemned the item’s relisting, calling it “religious appropriation” and “sacrilege.” Zed emphasized that Lord Ganesha, deeply revered as the remover of obstacles and a symbol of wisdom, should be worshipped in temples or home shrines—not used as a fashion accessory. He urged Neiman Marcus to withdraw the cufflinks immediately and issue a formal apology, highlighting the need to respect religious traditions.

Myths About Undocumented Immigrants: Data Insights

This stance revives concerns about widespread arrests destabilizing communities. ICE faces signif icant logistical challenges. With over 1.4 million people under final removal orders and 660,000 with criminal convictions or charges, the agency’s 6,000 officers are stretched thin. Staffing levels have stagnated as caseloads quadrupled to 7.6 million in the last decade. Efforts are further strained by demands at the U.S.-Mexico border during migration surges.

Operations highlight these challenges. Officers must gather evidence, secure arrest authority, and locate targets, often catching them outside their residences due to legal restrictions. On one recent mission, of-ficers arrested two men with convictions for sexual offenses against minors. However, critics argue sanc-tuary policies in cities like New York, which limit federal cooperation, impede community safety. DHS Modernizes H-2 Visa Program to Boost Efficiency and Worker Protections

HiIndia Newsdesk

WASHINGTON, DC- The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced a final rule to streamline the H-2 visa programs, enabling U.S. companies to more effectively address seasonal labor shortages. The updated regulations improve efficiency and enhance worker protections for the H-2A (agricultural) and H-2B (non-agricultural) visa programs. Secretar y of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas stated, “This modernization strengthens our economy by meeting labor demands while safeguarding workers’ rights.” USCIS Director Ur M. Jaddou emphasized the rule's dual focus: assisting U.S. employers and protecting workers. Key Provisions of the Rule:

• Improving Efficiency: The rule eliminates the annual list of eligible countries, simplifying eligibility criteria. It also resets the 3-year stay limit with a uniform 60-day absence period and clarifies compliance require-ments for employers. • Strengthening Protections: New measures bar companies from charging prohibited fees to workers and deny petitions for labor law violations. Enhanced whistleblower protections and stricter compliance re-views ensure integrity. • Enhancing Flexibility: Grace periods for workers have been expanded, and portability provisions now al-low immediate employment with a new employer upon filing. H-2 workers taking steps toward permanent residency will no longer lose their visa status. Effective January 17, 2025, the rule mandates the use of a revised Form I-129. These changes aim to bal-ance the economic needs of U.S. businesses with robust worker protections, fostering a fair and sustaina-ble system for temporary labor.

Trump Urges ICE Arrests in Schools, Churches, Hospitals

HiIndia Newsdesk

WASHINGTON, DC- Immigrant families across the U.S. are spending the holidays grappling with uncer-tainty, fearing President-elect Donald Trump’s promised mass deportation plan. Trump has pledged to launch “the largest deportation program in American history,” raising concerns about policies targeting sensitive locations like schools, churches, and hospitals. Felipe Sousa-Lazaballet, director of the Hope CommUnity Center in Florida, described the atmosphere as “heart-wrenching.” Families are preparing for the possibility of separation, with advocates organizing know-your-rights workshops and assisting with “dignity plans” that include legal documents to safeguard children and property.

Advocacy groups like RAICES in Texas and Aliento in Arizona are stepping up efforts to educate families on legal guardianship and financial preparedness. These organizations report increased calls from immigrants and community groups seeking guidance, as states like Texas and Florida brace for heightened enforce-ment. The emotional toll on families is significant. SousaLazaballet notes that initial conversations often involve “crying and sobbing” before plans can be finalized. Advocates stress the importance of mental health sup-port during this period of heightened fear and uncertainty. Meanwhile, organizations like United We Dream are gearing up to provide hotline support for those im-

pacted by immigration enforcement. Legal challenges may arise if sensitive location protections are re-voked, with groups like RAICES vowing to defend immigrants' rights. Jorge-Mario Cabrera of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights emphasizes the need for collective ac-tion, urging public pressure and tangible measures to counter potential mass deportations. Advocates also encourage undocumented individuals to seek legal screenings and ensure paperwork is current. As Inauguration Day approaches, immigrant communities, legal organizations, and advocacy groups are preparing for the challenges ahead, aiming to protect families and uphold constitutional rights amid an uncertain future.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — New Jersey’s largest hospital system, RWJ Barnabas Health, reinstated a mask mandate for all staff, patients, and visitors across its facilities, effective Monday. Headquartered in New Brunswick, the hospital system will provide masks at the door and may require visitors to replace personal masks with hospital-supplied ones. Additionally, visitors must sanitize their hands before entering.

This policy follows a recent uptick in COVID-19 cases in New Jersey, though the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) currently lists the infection risk as "low." Unlike RWJ Barnabas, New Jersey’s other major health systems, Hackensack Meridian and Atlantic Health, have not imposed mask mandates for staff or visitors. While masks are not mandatory at RWJ outpatient facilities, including doctors' offices, they are strongly encouraged. Patients with respiratory symptoms or those testing positive for COVID-19, flu, or RSV are advised to stay home. Masks are required for both patients and healthcare providers treating anyone with respiratory symptoms, and patients may request that providers wear masks during treatment. This move underscores the continued emphasis on safety amid fluctuating COVID-19 trends.

RPV Bans TwoWheelers on PV Drive South

RANCHO PALOS VERDES, CA — The Rancho Palos Verdes City Council has extended its controversial ban on bicycles and other two-wheeled vehicles on Palos Verdes Drive South for an additional 90 days, citing on-going safety concerns. Initially implemented in July, the ban temporarily prohibited bicycles, motorcycles, and other two-wheeled vehicles from traveling along the stretch of road. The extension now includes single-wheel vehicles as well, reflecting the council's assessment of worsening road conditions. City officials reported that certain areas of Palos Verdes Drive South are shifting at a rate of up to 4 inches per week, leading to the rapid formation of cracks, bumps, and potholes. These hazardous conditions make it unsafe for cycles and two-wheeled vehicles to use the road, according to the city. T he d ange rs of t he ro a d we re underscored recently when a person on an electric bicycle was injured in the prohibited area. “Everyone on council received a note and some, actually, relatively gruesome pictures of somebody who admittedly ignored the sign, drove through on an electric bike, and took a header,” said Mayor David Bradley. The original ban faced backlash from the local community, who acknowledged the need for enhanced safety measures but argued that the prohibition might be illegal. Despite the opposition, the council em-phasized the priority of public safety.

WASHINGT ON, D C-A cr iminal complaint was unsealed today charging Mohammad Reza Nouri, 36, an Iranian national and officer in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), for orchestrating the murder of American citizen Stephen Troell in Baghdad, Iraq, on November 7, 2022. Garland emphasized the Justice Department’s commitment to holding ac-countable those targeting Americans. “We allege that Nouri, an IRGC officer, orchestrated Troell’s murder to further Iran’s retaliation for Qasem Soleimani’s death.” Troell, a Tennessee native, worked at an English language institute in

procure weapons and vehicles, and facilitated the November 7 attack. Gunmen ambushed Troell and his wife as they drove home, blocking their escape and killing him with an assault weapon. Following the murder, Nouri and operatives involved fled to Iran. Nouri provided them with housing and allegedly celebrated the attack, claiming Troell was a spy threatening Islam. Nouri faces multiple charges, including conspiring to provide material support to a terrorist organization and murdering a U.S. national outside the United States, with penalties ranging from life imprisonment to death. The FBI and Justice Department collaborated with Iraqi authorities in the investigation. Nouri was convicted in Iraq and remains in custody. A federal district court will determine his U.S. sentence.

Operation Undocumented: Inside the Precision of ICE’s Immigration Raid

HiIndia Newsdesk

CHELSEA, MS — Before dawn, over a dozen Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents assem-bled in suburban Boston for a “targeted enforcement” operation. The effort, aimed at apprehending un-documented immigrants with criminal records, highlights the labor-intensive nature of such missions. Each arrest required 40 to 80 hours of surveillance, according to Todd Lyons, ICE’s acting assistant director for enforcement removal operations. During the operation, 16 agents arrested five immigrants previously released on bail by local jurisdictions. Lyons emphasized, “ICE doesn’t do blanket sweeps. Every individual here has been arrested for a felony or egregious crime.” However, questions loom about ICE’s

Logistical and financial challenges already strain ICE, which faces a $230 million budget shortfall. Despite plans to increase local law enforcement partnerships to address manpower shortages, conflicts are intensifying between federal authorities and jurisdictions resisting cooperation. Trump’s incoming border czar, Tom Homan, has threatened to prosecute officials

obstructing deportation efforts, stating, “If they know-ingly harbor an illegal alien, I’m going to seek prosecution.” Advocacy groups report a surge in requests for assistance since Trump’s election. Valerie Napier, legal di-rector for New England Justice for Our Neighbors, noted calls have tripled. “Most clients we represent now are children under 18, often with undocumented parents,” she said. Napier expressed concern about po-tential “collateral” arrests during mass operations. Additionally, the Trump administration is expected to scrap policies preventing ICE arrests at sensitive locations like schools and hospitals, raising fears within immigrant communities. As January approaches, anxiety builds among immigrants and advocates over the impact of these impending changes.
