Judge Pauses Trump’s Plan To Freeze Federal Aid Spending

“It seems like the federal government currently doesn’t actually know the full extent of the programs that are going to be subject to the pause,” AliKhan said in the judgment to pause the freeze, the Associated Press reported.

U.S. District Judge Loren L. AliKhan blocked the federal freeze—which was designed so Trump’s administration could review whether programs aligned with his agenda—minutes before it was set to go into effect on Tuesday, multiple outlets reported. The pause will remain in effect until Monday, when a hearing will take place on the issue, AliKhan ruled. The judgment only applies to existing programs that stood to have their funding paused, the Associated Press

Trump Plans To Send Up To 30,000 Migrants To Guantanamo Bay

US President Donald Trump has ordered the construction of a migrant detention facility in Guantanamo Bay which he said would hold as many as 30,000 people.

He said the facility at the US Navy base in Cuba, which would be separate from its high-security military prison, would house "the worst criminal illegal aliens threatening the American people".

Guantanamo Bay has long been used to house immigrants, a practice that has been criticised by some human rights groups.

Later on Wednesday, Trump's "border tsar" Tom Homan said the existing facility there would be expanded and run by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

He said the migrants could be transported there directly after being intercepted at sea by the US Coast Guard, and that the "highest" detention standards would be applied.

It is unclear how much the facility will cost or when it would be completed. Cuba's government swiftly condemned the plan, accusing the US of torture and illegal detention on "occupied" land. Trump's announcement came as he signed the so-called Laken Riley Act into law, which requires undocumented immigrants who are arrested for theft or violent crimes to be held in jail pending trial.

reported. The freeze in spending was announced Monday night by the acting director of the Office of Management and Budget, who said in a memo agencies had to “temporarily pause all activities related to obligation or disbursement of all Federal financial assistance,” though it reportedly did not apply to Social Security or Medicare and the OMB was able to grant other exceptions.

Meta Settles Trump Lawsuit for $25M

Meta has agreed to pay $25 million to settle a lawsuit from former President Donald Trump over claims of wrongful censorship after his Facebook and Instagram accounts were suspended following the Jan. 6 Capitol attack, The New York Times reported. Of the settlement, $22 million will fund Trump’s presidential library, while the rest covers legal fees and other plaintiffs, according to The Wall Street Journal. Meta did not admit wrongdoing. Trump signed the settlement at the White House on Wednesday, per CNN. Reports indicate he and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg discussed the lawsuit in November after Trump’s election. Though Trump’s accounts were reinstated in January 2023, his legal team argued a chilling effect remained due to stricter penalties for repeat violations.

Washington, United States:

US President Donald Trump will sign an executive order on Wednesday to combat antisemitism and pledge to deport noncitizen college students and other resident aliens who took part in pro-Palestinian protests, a White House official said.

A fact sheet on the order said Trump would order the Justice Department to "aggressively prosecute terroristic threats, arson, vandalism and violence against American Jews."

Fed After It Pauses Rate Cuts

The US Federal Reserve is in no "hurry" to adjust interest rates again, the central bank's chair Jerome Powell said Wednesday, after policymakers voted to pause rate cuts in the first decision since Donald Trump's White House return.

The Fed's rate-setting committee voted unanimously to keep the bank's benchmark lending rate at between 4.25 percent and 4.50 percent, the Fed announced in a statement.

"With our policy stance significantly less restrictive than it had been, and the economy remaining strong, we do not need to be in a hurry to adjust our policy stance," Powell told reporters after the decision. The Fed's pause follows three consecutive rate reductions which together lowered its key rate by a full percentage point. In its statement, the Fed said the unemployment rate had stabilized "at a low level," and the labor market was still solid. Inflation however "remains somewhat elevated," the Fed said, removing a reference in earlier statements to inflation making progress towards its long-term target of two percent.

"Won’t Join America, We Will Decide Our Future" – Greenlanders Reject Trump’s Offer

U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to incorporate Greenland into the United States. Considering the island's strategic importance, Trump urged Denmark to relinquish control over Greenland. This led to a heated phone exchange between Trump and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, January 29, a referendum was held in Greenland, where the majority of Greenlandic citizens rejected the idea of joining the United States.

Not just a few, but a staggering 85% of Greenlanders have rejected Trump's proposal to join the United States, effectively crushing his plans. Only 6% of the population supported the idea, while

9% declined to express an opinion. Greenland has a population of 60,000, and the survey conducted by the Danish newspaper Berlingske clearly indicates that Greenland does not want to lose its

autonomy. Greenland is currently under Denmark's control, and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is taking steps to preserve its autonomy. He has received support from French President

Colombian air force planes sent to fetch deportees from US

Two Colombian air force planes sent to the US to fetch deported migrants have landed in the capital, Bogotá.

The migrants had been on US military flights headed for Colombia on Sunday, when Colombian President Gustavo Petro barred the US military aircraft from landing, arguing that those on board were being treated like criminals. The incident took the two countries to the brink of a trade war after Donald Trump threatened to impose 25% tariffs on Colombian goods and Petro said he would retaliate in kind.

Diplomats from both countries reached a deal which has seen Colombia send its own air force planes to collect the migrants, a process that Petro said ensured they were treated "with dignity".

"They are Colombians, free and dignified, and in their homeland where they are loved," he wrote on X.

He also posted photos of the migrants getting off the plane without handcuffs.

The treatment of deportees on US military flights seems to have been at the centre of the spat between the two governments.

Colombia has accepted deportation flights from the US in the past: in 2024, 124 planes carrying deported migrants

from the US landed in the country. But in one of his posts on X on Sunday, Petro referenced a news video showing migrants deported from the US to Brazil, who had been handcuffed and had their feet restrained during the deportation flight.

Will Sheikh Hasina Return to Power in Bangladesh? Awami League Announces Street Protests

Dhaka: After widespread violence sparked by the student movement that began last year, Sheikh Hasina, the daughter of Bangladesh's founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was forced to resign and leave the country. Several leaders of the Awami League also faced attacks. However, now the Awami League has sounded the call for a return to power. The party has demanded the resignation of Mohammad Yunus's government over the persecution of Hindus and has devised a plan for an organized and widespread movement. It is important to note that this is the first movement in Bangladesh since Sheikh Hasina's resignation. After the student

protests became widespread last year, Sheikh Hasina's government fell, and many Awami League leaders were imprisoned. Some even went "underground." After the widespread riots that broke out in JulyAugust, Sheikh Hasina sought "sanctuary" in India for a long period. However, the Yunus government failed to function according to her "plans." Countless youth are left unemployed, and employment opportunities continue to decline as businesses, trade, and industries have slowed down, with many even coming to a halt. Inflation has surged, reaching double digits. As a result, the youth are dissatisfied with the Yunus government.

Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

The survey also revealed that Greenlanders not only rejected U.S. integration but also expressed a desire for full independence from Denmark. Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede has consistently emphasized the country's sovereignty, stating that the island is not for sale and that its future will be decided solely by its citizens. Greenland's strategic location in the Arctic makes it a crucial asset. If the island nation became part of the U.S., America could keep a close watch on Europe, Russia, and Asia. In a war-like situation, Greenland would give the U.S. a significant advantage. Additionally, the U.S. is also eyeing Greenland’s mineral-rich land.

Qatar to Assist Trump in Pressuring Israel, Hamas for Gaza Ceasefire

AQatari official has told Newsweek that the country at the center of the recently established ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas movement will support President Donald Trump in pushing both sides to adhere to the truce. The agreement, announced in Doha just days before Trump assumed office last week, is in its first phase—which constitutes a six-week ceasefire to the conflict sparked by a Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023—a limited exchange of hostages held by Hamas and Palestinians imprisoned by Israel, a partial Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and an increase in the flow of humanitarian aid to the war-torn territory. The second and third phases that would effectively put an end to the conflict require follow-up talks.

Passenger Jet, Blackhawk Helicopter Collide Midair Near D.C. Airport: FAA

Afatal midair collision between a commercial passenger jet and Black Hawk military helicopter near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Washington, D.C., forced air traffic to grind to a halt on Wednesday night.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has confirmed that a "CRJ700 regional jet collided in midair with a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter while on approach to Runway 33 at Reagan Washington National Airport around 9 p.m. local time."

The commercial aircraft was an American Airlines (AA) flight originating from Wichita, Kansas. The number of potential casualties was unclear at the time of publication. In an emailed response to Newsweek, AA confirmed that there were "60 passengers and four crew members on board the aircraft."

"We're aware of reports that American

American Airlines wrote on X, formerly Twitter. "We will provide information as it becomes available."

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt during a Fox News broadcast on Wednesday night said that President Donald Trump had "been made aware of this situation and, tragically, it appears that a military helicopter collided with a regional jet at DCA airport right here in Washington, D.C."

In an emailed statement, Trump said he has been "fully briefed on the terrible accident which just took place at Reagan National Airport. May God Bless their souls. Thank you for the incredible work being done by our first responders. I am monitoring the situation and will provide more details as they arise."

In a post to X, Reuters White House correspondent Nandita Bose said that three soldiers were aboard the U.S. Army helicopter, citing unnamed officials.

Will Trump's Executive Order Require Americans to Carry ID or Face Arrest?

In his first week in office, President Donald Trump signed an executive order titled "Protecting the American People Against Invasion," which referenced an 80-year-old law called the Alien Registration Act (ARA). The law requires immigrants to carry identification proving their legal status, a move Trump emphasized to tighten border security. However, civil rights groups have raised concerns that this could lead to U.S. citizens, particularly racial minorities, being detained by law enforcement.

Key Points:

Immigration Order and ARA:

Trump’s executive order, which also addressed immigration reform and increased deportations, invokes the ARA from the 1940s. This rule mandates that immigrants carry proof of their legal status at all times, with penalties for non-compliance, including civil or criminal prosecution.

Potential Impact on U.S. Citizens:

Civil rights experts, including Anthony Enriquez of RFK Human Rights, warn that this law could lead to U.S. citizens, especially those from racial minority groups, being wrongly detained. Police may question a person’s citizenship and demand documentation, causing concern that law enforcement may target people who do not "look American" or lack

proper identification. Past Mistakes and Consequences:

The issue isn’t hypothetical. There have been previous incidents where U.S. citizens were mistakenly detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). For example, a U.S. veteran from Puerto Rico was detained during an ICE raid in New

Jersey because his military ID was not accepted as proof of citizenship. Reports show ICE may have deported up to 70 Americans between 2015 and 2020, highlighting the risk of wrongful arrests.

Concerns of

Racial Profiling:

Civil rights organizations argue that this policy could disproportionately affect racial minorities. Native American leaders, particularly in Arizona and New Mexico, have already reported incidents of federal agents approaching members of their tribes. There is concern that the enforcement of this law will lead to racial profiling,

"Any widespread application of the law, especially in the undisciplined and unsupervised manner unleashed by this administration, will de facto compel citizens to produce identification at the whim of federal agents, will cause the harassment and arrest of innocent individuals, and will exacerbate racial profiling."

professor at Yale Law

with non-white individuals facing increased scrutiny.

Challenges with Identification:

In the U.S., there is no national ID requirement, which means many citizens, particularly from marginalized groups, may not always have the required identification. Reports indicate that 24% of Hispanic and 21% of Black voting-age citizens do not have a current driver’s license. Without a national ID system, it becomes difficult for law enforcement to know who carries eligible documentation.

Law Enforcement’s Role:

Enriquez stresses the importance of clear guidance for law enforcement to avoid unlawful detentions. He argues that the executive order’s messaging prioritizes criminal enforcement over caution, potentially sweeping up innocent people.

In conclusion, the ARA’s reactivation could lead to unintended consequences for U.S. citizens, especially among racial minorities, as they may be unfairly targeted by law enforcement. Civil rights groups call for careful consideration before implementing such measures.

According to CNN's Gabe Cohen, citing a law enforcement source, there have been confirmed fatalities.

2M Job Cuts Expected as Trump Announces Buyouts

In a move to cut federal spending, President Donald Trump has announced buyout offers for over 2 million federal employees, affecting nearly two-thirds of the government workforce. If even 10% accept, it could lead to the largest single job reduction in U.S. history, with over 200,000 jobs lost, according to Forbes.

A memo from the Office of Personnel Management states that employees who voluntarily resign by February 6 will receive about eight months' salary until September. The offer excludes military, postal, and national security personnel.

The U.S. government, employing over 3 million people, ranks as the 15th largest workforce in the country. This decision follows Trump’s executive orders on his first day of his second term, which ended remote work and mandated fulltime office returns.

Additionally, Trump dismissed 17 inspectors general from major federal agencies, sparing only Michael Horowitz, an Obama-era appointee. Meanwhile, 56 senior officials at USAID were placed on leave amid an investigation into alleged obstruction of Trump’s policies.

An American Airlines flight has collided in mid-air with a Black Hawk helicopter in Washington DC, with both crashing in the Potomac River. The jet, which was coming from Wichita, Kansas, was carrying 60 passengers and four crew members. Three soldiers were in the helicopter. Indian Student in US Dies in Stop Sign Crash

Mohammed Wajid, a 28-year-old student from Hyderabad, died in a road accident in Plymouth County of Massachusetts in the USA on January 28. Mr Wajid, a native of the Khairatabad area in Hyderabad, was a member of the NRI Minority Congress Committee in the USA. He completed his master's degree in Chicago.

The accident occurred when Mr Wajid, driving a semi-truck, failed to stop at the posted stop sign at an intersection and collided with a truck hauling grain. Mr Wajid's vehicle struck the rear of the grain causing it to split in half, explained the Iowa State Patrol. Mr Wajid was declared dead at the hospital. Timothy Wilkin driving the other truck was unhurt. The incident took place at 12:42 and caused a fire in nearby fields. Telangana Congress Secretary Mohammed Shahabuddin shared the news on X (formerly Twitter) and expressed condolences. "Today is a sad day for me and our entire Congress family. Over 7,000 Indian Student Visitors Overstayed in US in 2023

Washington: Over 7,000 student and exchange visitors from India overstayed in the US in 2023, an expert told US lawmakers and suggested several reforms in the country's immigration policies, including those related to H-1B visas.

As many as 32 countries have student/exchange visitor overstay rates of higher than 20 per cent, Jessica M Vaughan from the Center for Immigration Studies told the US House Committee on the Judiciary during a hearing on “Restoring Immigration Enforcement in America.” The F and M visa categories have the highest overstay rates of any of the broad categories of temporary admission. The F-1 Visa allows a person to enter the United States as a full-time student at an accredited college, university, seminary, conservatory, academic high school, elementary school, or other academic institution or in a language training programme.

Trump Vows Tariffs to "Put America First"

Targets China, India, Brazil

Washington: President Donald Trump announced plans to impose tariffs on countries he claims "harm" America, including China, India, and Brazil. Speaking at a House Republicans retreat in Florida, Trump emphasized his "America First" approach, aiming to boost US manufacturing and wealth.

“We’re going to put tariffs on nations that mean harm to us.

China, India, Brazil—they’re high-tariff countries. This won’t continue because we’re putting America first,” Trump declared.

He proposed a "fair system" to bring revenue into US coffers and enrich the nation, pledging swift economic benefits.

Citing his second inaugural address, Trump reiterated that taxing foreign nations, not Americans, would create jobs and revive domestic industries.

Trump on Migrants: "India Will Do the Right Thing"

Washington DC: US President Donald Trump had a "productive" phone conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, the first since Trump’s second term began. The two leaders discussed expanding cooperation on security in the Indo-Pacific, the Middle East, and Europe. Trump confirmed Modi’s planned visit to the White House in February. Trump also addressed immigration issues during the call, stating that PM Modi would "do what's right" regarding the return of Indian immigrants who entered the US illegally. The conversation highlighted the strong US-India relationship, with Trump emphasizing India’s role in countering China and increasing its procurement of American-made security equipment.

On trade, Trump urged India to move towards a fair bilateral trading relationship, noting that India is the US's largest trading partner with over $118 billion in two-way trade in 2023/24. India enjoys a $32 billion trade surplus. The leaders also discussed technology, energy, defense, and investment, agreeing to remain in close contact. They expressed commitment to the Quad, with Modi scheduled to host a Quad summit later this year. Modi, in his post-call remarks, called Trump a "dear friend," affirming their shared commitment to global peace, prosperity, and security. Experts predict that Modi’s upcoming visit will likely lead to further discussions on trade, immigration, and the US-India relationship, while also considering India’s stance on Russia amid ongoing US sanctions.

Trump Seeks Musk’s Help for Sunita Williams

Washington DC:

Billionaire Elon Musk on Tuesday (local time) said that US President Donald Trump had asked him to facilitate the return of the two Boeing Starliner astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore, who have been on the space station since June 2024, as soon as possible.

The SpaceX CEO claimed that it was "terrible" that the pair were left "stranded" at the International Space Station (ISS) by former President Joe Biden's administration for so long, even though NASA had already roped in SpaceX months ago to return both astronauts as part of its Crew-9 mission.

"The @POTUS has asked @ SpaceX to bring home the 2 astronauts stranded on the @ Space_Station as soon as possible. We will do so," Musk said in a post on X.

Trump offers millions of federal workers eight months pay to resign

President Donald Trump has offered buyout packages to almost all federal workers who do not want to return to the office, a major move designed to shrink the US government.

In an email sent to millions of employees on Tuesday, his administration told workers they had to decide by 6 February whether they wanted to be part of a "deferred resignation program".

If they agreed to leave their jobs by that date, the message said, they would receive about eight months of salary as a severance package.

The Trump administration expects up to 10% of employees to accept the offer, or around 200,000 of the more than two million workers the federal government employs, according to the BBC's US partner CBS News.

"You Were Supposed To Ensure Transition": Gautam Gambhir Gets 1-Year Warning, BCCI Told To...

The performances of several veteran Indian cricketers, including the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Mohamed Siraj, etc. have come under the spotlight over recent poor performances. While Rohit and Virat are even being pushed to quit Test cricket, no such verdict exists at present for head coach Gautam Gambhir. With the Champions Trophy being India's next big assignment, there are some who feel the team's poor show in the ICC event could lead to Gambhir's exit. However, former India opener Aakash Chopra feels the Test tour of England will define whether the head coach will stay or not.

Gambhir was brought in as India's head coach after Rahul Dravid's exit, following the team's ICC T20 World Cup triumph last year. As Gambhir nears completion of one year at the job, Chopra feels the Board of Control

Rohit Sharma vs Gavaskar: BCCI Complaint?

Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma has allegedly complained against legendary batter and commentator Sunil Gavaskar to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), according to a report by CricBlogger. The report claimed that Rohit felt that Gavaskar was "too negative" regarding his recent poor form against Australia and he relayed his concerns to the cricket board. Rohit scored just 31 runs in 3 Test matches against Australia and he even decided to drop himself for the final match in Sydney. In his column for the Sydney Morning Herald, Gavaskar wrote that Rohit would step down from captaincy “if he doesn't score runs in Melbourne and Sydney and he won't wait for the selectors to make that call”. The report added that Rohit has allegedly expressed his 'discomfort' regarding the external pressure over his performances. “Rohit felt that it was not necessary for Gavaskar to criticise him in that fashion and that's why he complained to the BCCI about Gavaskar,” a source said.

Rohit Sharma, along with his teammates Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer, will miss Mumbai's upcoming Ranji Trophy clash against Meghalaya in a must-win clash starting on Thursday.

AI in Breast Cancer Detection

Revolutionizing Early Diagnosis and Prevention

Breast cancer is one of the most prevalent forms of cancer globally, with millions of cases diagnosed annually. Early detection significantly increases the chances of successful treatment and survival. In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative tool in the fight against breast cancer. Cutting-edge technologies like Mirai, AsymMirai, and Transpara are leveraging AI to analyze mammograms with unprecedented precision, offering the potential to identify cancer risks years before symptoms appear. This article delves deep into the scientific advancements driving these innovations, their implications, and the broader context of prevention.

AI in Breast Cancer Detection: The Tools at Work

Mirai

Developed by MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), Mirai is an advanced AI model designed to predict the risk of breast cancer up to five years before its onset. The model uses mammograms to identify subtle patterns that might indicate future malignancies, even in dense breast tissue, which can obscure traditional imaging interpretations. A study published in Science Translational Medicine demonstrated Mirai's efficacy in multi-national cohorts, outperforming conventional risk assessment models like the TyrerCuzick model. Mirai's ability to integrate demographic and clinical data with mammogram analysis enhances its predictive accuracy.

AsymMirai

A derivative of Mirai, AsymMirai focuses on asymmetry in breast tissues, a subtle yet significant indicator of potential malignancy. Research published in Radiology highlighted its precision in detecting early-stage cancers, particularly in women under 50, who often face challenges with standard mammographic techniques.

Transpara

Developed by ScreenPoint Medical, Transpara is a CE-marked AI system

already used in some clinical settings in Europe. It assigns risk scores to mammograms and assists radiologists in identifying suspicious regions for further investigation. A study in The Lancet Digital Health found that Transpara improved the detection rate of invasive cancers while reducing false positives, thus minimizing unnecessary biopsies.

Scientific Basis and Methodologies

Deep Learning Models in Mammography

AI systems like Mirai and Transpara rely on deep learning, a subset of machine learning. By training neural networks on millions of mammograms, these models learn to recognize complex patterns associated with malignancies. Techniques like convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are particularly effective in image analysis, enabling AI to detect microcalcifications, architectural distortions, and other early signs of cancer.

Cross-Validation and MultiCohort Studies

To ensure robustness, these tools are validated across diverse populations and imaging devices. For example, Mirai's training included data from the U.S., Europe, and Asia, accounting for variations in breast density, imaging technology, and demographic factors. This global perspective reduces bias and increases the generalizability of AI predictions.

Integration

of Clinical and Genomic Data

Some AI systems go beyond mammography by incorporating patient-specific factors like age, hormone levels, and genetic predispositions (e.g., BRCA mutations). This holistic approach improves the predictive power of AI models, enabling personalized risk assessments.

Benefits of AI in Breast Cancer Detection

Early Detection

Detecting cancer at its earliest stages can increase survival rates by up to 95%. AI tools can identify malignancies years before symptoms or palpable lumps appear, offering a critical window for intervention.

Reduction in False Positives and Negatives

Traditional mammography has limitations, including false positives (leading to unnecessary biopsies) and false negatives (missed cancers). AI reduces these errors by providing a second, highly accurate opinion.

Cost-Effectiveness

By streamlining the diagnostic process, AI reduces the burden on healthcare systems. Fewer unnecessary procedures and earlier treatment initiation lead to significant cost savings.

Enhanced Access in Underserved Areas

AI can bridge gaps in regions with limited access to radiologists. Remote imaging combined with AI analysis can provide high-quality diagnostics in resource-constrained settings.

Challenges and Limitations

While AI has demonstrated remarkable potential, several challenges remain:

Data Privacy and Security

Medical imaging data is sensitive. Ensuring patient privacy and secure data storage is paramount, especially when using cloud-based AI systems.

Regulatory Approval

AI tools must undergo rigorous clinical trials and obtain approvals from bodies like the FDA before widespread adoption.

Integration into Clinical Workflows Seamlessly incorporating AI into existing healthcare systems requires training for radiologists and addressing concerns about overreliance on technology.

Trump orders US to leave World Health Organization

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to begin the process of withdrawing the US from the World Health Organization (WHO).

"Oooh, that's a big one," the newly inaugurated US president said as he approved the document after arriving back at the White House. It was one of dozens of executive actions he put his signature to on day one in office.

This marks the second time Trump has ordered the US be pulled out of the WHO.

Trump was critical of how the international body handled Covid-19 and began the process of pulling out from the Geneva-based institution during the pandemic. President Joe Biden later reversed that decision.

Weight-loss drugs may boost health in many ways

The first study to assess how weight-loss drugs affect the whole of human health has discovered an "eye-opening" impact on the body, researchers say.

The analysis, involving about two million people, linked the drugs to better heart health, fewer infections, a lower risk of drug abuse and fewer cases of dementia.

The US researchers also warned the drugs were "not without risk" and seemed to increase joint pain and potentially deadly inflammation in the pancreas.

However, the results need very careful interpretation.

Weight-loss drugs have exploded in popularity - but a full understanding of everything they touch in the body is still coming together. "This is new territory," said lead researcher Dr Ziyad al-Aly, clinical epidemiologist at Washington University. Initially, they were a proven treatment for type 2 diabetes. Then, weight loss was noticed as a significant side-effect - and Ozempic and Wegovy became household names. The study used data on US veterans with type 2 diabetes, some of whom were given Ozempic or Wegovy and some more standard drugs - to measure their effect on 175 other illnesses.

A New AI Rival

DeepSeek

How China's 'AI heroes' overcame US curbs to stun Silicon Valley

When ChatGPT revolutionized artificial intelligence (AI), many wondered if China could compete. Initially, Beijing’s AI models—like Baidu’s Ernie and versions from Tencent and ByteDance—were seen as inferior to their American counterparts. However, DeepSeek’s sudden emergence has changed the narrative. The AI model, developed at a fraction of the cost spent by U.S. tech giants, has stunned Silicon Valley and raised questions about China’s innovation capabilities.

Overcoming U.S. Restrictions

To maintain its AI dominance, the U.S. government imposed strict chip export bans, preventing companies like Nvidia from selling high-performance chips to China. These chips are critical for training AI models. DeepSeek’s founder, Liang Wenfeng, acknowledged this challenge but revealed that the company had stockpiled up to 50,000 Nvidia A100 chips before the ban. Unlike Western firms that rely on thousands of high-end chips, DeepSeek trained its model using a combination of 2,000 top-tier chips and thousands of lower-grade ones, significantly reducing costs. Some skeptics, including Elon Musk, question the accuracy of these claims, but experts believe the restrictions have pushed Chinese AI firms to innovate with limited resources.

partnerships between universities and industries. The country produces over 6,000 STEM PhDs per month, far surpassing the U.S. DeepSeek’s team, with fewer than 140 members, is largely composed of young engineers from top Chinese universities. Liang, an AI expert from Zhejiang University, is celebrated as a “technical idealist” for keeping DeepSeek’s platform open-source. Experts believe this collaborative approach has helped China advance faster in AI development.

Global Challenges Ahead

Despite DeepSeek’s rapid rise, challenges remain. U.S. trade restrictions could limit access to global datasets, impacting its ability to train future models. Additionally, the U.S. still dominates in computing power and AI infrastructure, making it uncertain how DeepSeek will sustain its growth. However, its ability to innovate despite restrictions has sparked concerns among Western tech leaders.

National Pride and Public Excitement

Government Support and AI Talent

China has long invested in becoming a tech superpower, offering scholarships, research grants, and encouraging

DeepSeek’s success has thrilled Chinese social media, where Liang is now celebrated as one of China’s “three AI heroes.” The timing of its launch, coinciding with Donald Trump’s return to the U.S. presidency, is seen as symbolic— challenging the notion that American restrictions can halt China’s progress. As the country prepares for Lunar New Year, DeepSeek’s achievement is being hailed as a source of national pride, lifting spirits amid economic uncertainties. Many believe it signals China’s growing influence in the global AI race.

China's DeepSeek AI shakes industry and dents America's swagger

DeepSeek, a new Chinese AI app, has sent shockwaves through the tech industry, markets, and America's AI dominance. Venture capitalist Marc Andreessen called it "AI's Sputnik moment."

Over the weekend, DeepSeek became the most downloaded free app on Apple’s US App Store. By Monday, its impact triggered a massive sell-off in tech stocks. Nvidia's shares plunged 17%, wiping out nearly $600 billion in market value—the biggest drop in US stock market history.

The key factor? Cost. While OpenAI spent $5 billion last year, DeepSeek’s developers claim they built their model for just $5.6 million. This astonishing efficiency has raised skepticism in Silicon Valley. Analyst Gene Munster questioned if the startup was subsidized, calling the chatbot "surprisingly good."

DeepSeek's rise comes just after OpenAI's Sam Altman and Oracle's Larry Ellison announced Stargate, a $500 billion AI investment plan

with former President Trump. Many assumed US dominance in AI was inevitable, but this development has shaken that confidence.

Trump called DeepSeek’s emergence a "wake-up call" and emphasized the need for cheaper AI. Meanwhile, OpenAI’s Altman admitted DeepSeek’s achievement was "impressive" but promised superior models.

UK will

not be able to resist China's tech dominance

Each month, over 6,000 STEM PhDs graduate from Chinese universities, compared to 2,0003,000 in the US and 1,500 in the UK. In 2023, China filed 1.7 million patents—more than the US, Japan, South Korea, and Europe combined.

China’s rapid technological rise, exemplified by DeepSeek’s shocking success, is no coincidence. The AI breakthrough by a little-known Hangzhou hedge fund—claiming to have trained a ChatGPT competitor for just $5.6 million— stems from years of strategic investment in future technologies. AI’s core resources—microchips, scientific research, and data—are areas where China may already hold an edge. Each month, over 6,000 STEM PhDs graduate from Chinese universities, compared to 2,000-3,000 in the US and 1,500 in the UK. In 2023, China filed 1.7 million patents—more than the US, Japan, South Korea, and Europe combined. Even in citation-weighted patents, which measure scientific impact, China now competes with the US. China’s dominance extends to electric vehicles (EVs), where it has overtaken traditional automakers with advanced battery technology and AIpowered manufacturing. Companies like Huawei are shifting into smart car production with “dark factories” run by AI-driven robots. The country now files three-quarters of all clean-tech patents and is electrifying at an unprecedented rate, leading some to call it an “electro state.”

Beyond tech, energy stocks also took a hit, raising questions about AI’s future infrastructure needs. DeepSeek reportedly used Nvidia’s H800 chips, potentially prompting the Trump administration to reassess US chip export policies.

This unexpected development may accelerate the AI race, forcing US companies to adapt swiftly—just as Sputnik did for space exploration.

The US National Science Board recently warned that China is close to becoming the world’s leading science and engineering nation, outpublishing the US in AI research and patents. Western leaders, including UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves, have taken note, with recent visits aimed at fostering economic cooperation. However, concerns about data privacy, censorship, and security remain. If the US banned TikTok, could DeepSeek be next?

President Trump acknowledged China’s AI rise as a “wake-up call,” but balancing competition with cooperation remains a challenge for global leaders. DeepSeek’s impact goes beyond tech—it shakes economics and geopolitics alike.

Although not many opened about this matter, now, months after the release, the leading man Devgn decided to address the same during an interview.

One of the social media users have taken to the platform X aka Twitter, to share a clip from a recent interview of Ajay Devgn where he is seen candidly answering the host regarding the feedback he received for Singham Again. After the host politely points out that the Bajirao Singham, who was known for his grand action sequences who would take on the villains alone in his bulky avatar, was missing from the recent 2024 release, Ajay agreed to the statement saying, “I think yeh reaction mujhe kaafi logon se aaya hai. toh aage dhyaan rakhenge ki woh jo Singham ka feel tha - guss guss ke maarne ka - woh aage zaroor rahega (I think I received a similar reaction from many. So, we are going to ensure that the next time – the authentic feel of Singham where he does intense action – will definitely be a part of the film)”. Directed by Rohit Shetty and produced under the banner Jio Studios, the film was the third movie in the Singham franchise and fifth one in the world of Rohit Shetty’s ambitious copverse. The film featured Kareena Kapoor Khan reprising her character of Avni Bajirao Singham along with a host of celebrities like Arjun Kapoor who played the lead antagonist with Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Tiger Shroff, and Akshay Kumar in key cameos.

Mamta Kulkarni

Appointed Mahamandaleshwar by Kinnar Akhara

Her emotions were evident during the ceremony when she broke down in tears. "It felt like an athlete winning a gold medal after years of hard work. This title is the culmination of my 23 years of penance," she explained.

Former Bollywood actress Mamta Kulkarni, now known as Shri Yamai Mamta Nandagiri, has been appointed as a Mahamandaleshwar by the Kinnar Akhara, a transgender ascetic order. Kulkarni, who renounced her glamorous life years ago, dedicated over two decades to meditation and spiritual practice before attaining this significant religious title. Speaking about her journey, Kulkarni stated, "I meditated for 22-23 years and took renunciation for the welfare of humanity. After renunciation, marriage is no longer an option. Now, after becoming a Mahamandaleshwar, the question of marriage is completely closed."

She also described her feelings after the appointment, comparing her journey to that of a student practicing for years and finally achieving their dream. "The difference I felt in my attire when I was in Bollywood is similar to what I feel now after becoming a Mahamandaleshwar. It feels like a girl who has practiced for years in university and finally becomes a doctor," she said.

Kulkarni's appointment has, however, not been without controversy. Several saints at the Kumbh Mela expressed opposition, criticizing the recognition of the Kinnar Akhara. Shri Swami Anand Swaroop Maharaj, head of Shambhavi Peeth, remarked, "By granting recognition to the Kinnar Akhara in the last Kumbh, a grave sin was committed. This is an attempt to make a mockery of the Kumbh tradition." Despite the backlash, Kulkarni remains undeterred, emphasizing the inclusivity of the Kinnar Akhara. According to her, the Akhara, led by Mahamandaleshwar Dr. Laxmi Narayan Tripathi, offers freedom and opportunities for yogis and yoginis to pursue their spiritual goals without restrictions.

Reflecting on her daily life as a Mahamandaleshwar, Kulkarni shared that her discipline remains unwavering. She wakes up at 4 a.m. daily and prioritizes meditation and spiritual focus, noting that sleep has become secondary in her journey. Her emotions were evident during the ceremony when she broke down in tears. "It felt like an athlete winning a gold medal after years of hard work. This title is the culmination of my 23 years of penance," she explained.

Kulkarni’s transformation from Bollywood star to spiritual leader underscores her dedication to a higher calling. While her appointment has sparked debate, it also highlights the evolving traditions within India’s religious landscape.

Trump's Deportation Plans: Indians Quit Part-Time Jobs

International students can work in the US on F-1 visas for up to 20 hours a week on-campus, but many students work offcampus at restaurants, gas stations, retail stores and more to cover essential expenses. However, students are giving up such jobs now to safeguard their future.

Indian students in the US are quitting part-time jobs over fears of deportation, amid expectations of stricter immigration policies under President Donald Trump’s administration. According to The Times of India, these jobs, while essential for survival, pose a significant risk, especially for students with large loans for their education.

Trump’s inauguration on January 20 has intensified concerns about tighter enforcement. F-1 visa holders are allowed to work up to 20 hours a week on-campus, but many students rely on off-campus jobs at restaurants, gas stations, and retail stores to cover expenses. Fearing immigration checks, students are now leaving these positions.

“I worked six hours a day at a café for $7 an hour to cover my expenses,” said Arjun, a graduate student in Illinois. “But I quit after hearing about potential checks. With a $50,000 loan, I can’t risk deportation.”

Neha, a Master’s student in New York, added, “Random checks are being talked about. My friends and I decided to stop working. It’s hard, but we can’t lose our visas.”

With savings running out, many students now borrow from friends or family, causing financial and emotional stress. Meanwhile, India has agreed to repatriate undocumented nationals, subject to verification of their Indian origin, confirmed External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.

Hamas Frees 4 Israeli Hostages in Swap

Four female Israeli soldiers were released by Hamas today. They were brought in military uniform and made to stand on a podium and wave.

Four female Israeli soldiers were released by Hamas today. They were brought in military uniform and made to stand on a podium and wave. They were handed over to Red Cross members and the vehicle has now left Gaza with the hostages. Hamas had mentioned on Friday that they would release the four Israeli women soldiers who had been held hostage since October 7, 2023. This is the second exchange under the ceasefire deal between Israel and Gaza.

All four were taken captive from Nahal Oz military base, about

a kilometre away from the Gaza border.

Per the plan, post the release of the four Israeli women soldiers, Israel should free a group of Palestinian prisoners although the exact number has not been specified by either side. This fragile deal is set to build the foundation for a permanent end to the war in Gaza. After the ceasefire announcement, many displaced Gazans tried to go back home after more than a year of incessant war, but they only found rubble in place of where the houses once stood.

Pakistan's ISI Visits Dhaka; India Monitoring

New Delhi:

ISI Members In Bangladesh: On January 21, Rawalpindi secretly dispatched a senior delegation to Dhaka. A senior official from Bangladesh's Directorate General of Forces Intelligence or DGFI received them at the airport upon their arrival aboard an Emirates Airlines flight routed via Dubai.

Pakistan’s spy agency ISI has secretly sent a high-level delegation to Dhaka, raising concerns in India. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that India is closely monitoring developments in its neighborhood, particularly those affecting national security, and will take “appropriate action” if required.

US Supreme Court Approves Tahawwur Rana's Extradition

The US Supreme Court has cleared Mumbai-attack convict Tahawwur Rana's extradition to India as it dismissed a review petition against his conviction in the case.

Washington: The US Supreme Court has cleared Mumbai-attack convict Tahawwur Rana's extradition to India as it dismissed a review petition against his conviction in the case. India was seeking the extradition of Rana, a Canadian national of Pakistani origin, as he was wanted in the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks case. This was Rana's last legal chance not to be extradited to India. Earlier, he lost a legal battle in several federal courts, including the US Court of Appeals for the North Circuit in San Francisco.

On November 13, Rana filed a "petition for a writ of certiorari" before the US Supreme Court. This was denied by the top court on January 21, a day after Donald Trump was sworn in as the American President. "Petition DENIED," the Supreme Court said. Rana is currently detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles.

Bangladeshi military delegation, led by Lt. Gen. SM Kamrul Hasan, visited Rawalpindi between January 13 and 18 and met Pakistan’s army, air force, and navy chiefs, including Army Chief Gen. Asim Munir.

The ISI team arrived in Dhaka on January 21 and was received by a senior official from Bangladesh’s Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI).

They are reportedly touring military establishments in Bangladesh and reviewing Dhaka’s military capabilities. The Pakistan Army’s media wing, ISPR, described the growing ties as a “stronger defence relationship” and emphasized resilience against external influences.

Historically, Sheikh Hasina curtailed ISI activities in Bangladesh due to their support for extremism and interference.

However, under the interim government of Muhammad Yunus, military ties with Pakistan have significantly increased.

Trump Blames Zelenskyy for War

Washington: In a Fox News interview, former President Donald Trump criticized Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for resisting Russia's invasion, citing the power imbalance between the two nations. "Zelenskyy was fighting a much bigger, more powerful entity," Trump stated, suggesting resistance was futile. "He shouldn't have done that, because we could have made a deal." Trump argued that Zelenskyy should have negotiated with Russian President Vladimir Putin to avoid the war. "I could have made that deal so easily, but Zelenskyy chose to fight," he said.

Make in America or Pay Tariffs: Trump at Davos

Davos, Switzerland:

US President Donald Trump issued a blunt warning to global elites in a video message to the World Economic Forum on Thursday: Make your product in the United States or pay tariffs. Beamed on a giant screen in the Swiss Alpine village of Davos, Trump received a loud round of applause from political and business A-listers who had eagerly awaited his appearance all week. Speaking from the White House, Trump touted his plans to cut taxes, deregulate industries and crack down on illegal immigration. But he also had a tough message. "Come make your product in America and we will give you among the lowest taxes of any nation on earth," Trump said. "But if you don't make your product in America, which is your prerogative, then very simply you will have to pay a tariff."

In his wide-ranging speech, Trump made a link between the war in Ukraine and oil prices.

Pankaj Chaudhary, Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth, Niti Aayog Vice Chairman Suman Bery, Principal Scientific Advisor Ajay Kumar Sood and Earth Sciences Secretary M Ravichandran, among others. Mr Singh said the submersible will operate at a depth of up to 500 meters this year, with a subsequent goal of reaching a depth of 6,000 metres by the next year.

Judge Blocks Trump Citizenship Order

Seattle: A federal judge in Seattle temporarily blocked President Donald Trump’s executive order limiting automatic birthright citizenship, calling it “blatantly unconstitutional.”

U.S. District Judge John Coughenour issued a restraining order following a request from four Democratic-led states—Washington, Arizona, Illinois,

and Oregon. The executive order, signed on Trump’s first day in office, denies citizenship to children born in the U.S. if neither parent is a citizen or legal permanent resident.

“This violates the 14th Amendment’s citizenship clause,” Washington Assistant Attorney General Lane Polozola argued during the hearing. The 14th Amendment, adopted in 1868, guarantees citizenship to anyone

Immigration raid on New Jersey business

Immigration advocates had worried when Trump returned to power, with promises of stopping illegal immigration, that could mean harsh realities for undocumented immigrants and immigrants broadly.

They warned that during raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) other people, including citizens, could get caught in the crossfire. Meanwhile, Trump's border czar Tom Homan has repeatedly warned that

undocumented people caught up in raids of criminals who are without documentation will be deported too. Earlier today, we head about one of those raids in Newark in New Jersey.

The Mayor of Newark Ras Baraka said in a statement this evening that ICE agents raided a local establishment in the city and detained undocumented residents and US citizens "without producing a warrant".

One of those individuals was a US military veteran, the mayor said. "Newark will not stand by idly while people are being unlawfully terrorised," Baraka said.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have arrested 538 people and lodged 373 detainers, the agency said in an update on Thursday.

"This is blatantly unconstitutional order," the judge told a lawyer with the U.S. Justice Department defending Donald Trump's order

born in the U.S., a principle affirmed in an 1898 Supreme Court ruling. The order, set to take effect on February 19, would strip over 150,000 newborns annually of citizenship, preventing them from obtaining Social Security numbers, government benefits, and lawful work. Civil rights groups and attorneys general from 22 states have filed lawsuits, calling the order unconstitutional. The U.S. Justice Department defended the order as crucial for addressing immigration issues but claimed the 14th Amendment doesn’t universally guarantee birthright citizenship. It also argued that states lack standing to sue under the citizenship clause. Meanwhile, 36 Republican House members introduced legislation to limit automatic citizenship to children of citizens or permanent residents. The Seattle lawsuit has advanced faster than others, and Judge Coughenour, appointed by Ronald Reagan, is expected to rule soon. If enforced, Trump’s order would mark a significant shift in U.S. immigration and citizenship policy.

Operation to Eliminate Maoist Leaders by 2026

Flying 15,000ft above the ground, Israeli-made drones are taking pictures of Chhattisgarh’s Maoist fortress of Abhujmad through fog and darkness and sending real-time stills and videos to the National Technical Research Organisation. Trump urges Opec countries to slash oil prices

went to the net and shook his opponents hand to inform him about his decision. Djokovic was carrying an injury from his quarter-final match against Carlos Alcaraz and he looked in a bit of bother as Zverev made him engage in long rallies in the first set. Zverev will now take on the winner of the match between Ben Shelton and Jannik Sinner in the final of the Australian Open on Sunday.

He left the court to a mixture of boos and applause from the crowd as Germany's Zverev reached his first Melbourne final. It means Djokovic has now gone five Grand Slams without winning the title he needs to surpass Margaret Court's 24 and become the all-time leader.

President Donald Trump said he would ask Saudi Arabia and other Opec nations to "bring down the cost of oil" and doubled-down on his threat to use tariffs.

In a speech to executives at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Thursday, the US president said he was 'surprised' that Opec hadn't brought down the price of oil before the elections.

"Right now the price is high enough that that war will continue," he said, referring to the Russia-Ukraine war and suggesting that the higher oil price was helping to sustain funding for the conflict in Moscow.

Musk-Ramaswamy Rift at DOGE Over H-1B Visa Holders

Ramaswamy's exit from DOGE was reportedly expedited by his contentious remarks on X, where he criticised American culture and its hiring practices, especially regarding the H-1B visa program.

Washington: Vivek Ramaswamy's departure from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) marks a significant shift in his career trajectory. The 39-year-old entrepreneur, who coled DOGE alongside Elon Musk, has announced his decision to run for Ohio Governor in 2026. This move is seen as an attempt to revive his political career within the state, particularly since Ohio's current Governor, Mike DeWine, is restricted by term limits. Ramaswamy's exit from DOGE was reportedly expedited by his contentious remarks on X, where he criticised American culture and its hiring practices, especially regarding the H-1B visa program. His comments, which aligned with the views of Musk and Trump, sparked widespread debate and garnered over 118 million views and 51,000 comments. In his post, Ramaswamy argued that American companies prioritise foreign-born engineers over native Americans due to a cultural veneration of mediocrity over excellence. The controversy surrounding Ramaswamy's remarks has led to speculation about his relationship with Elon Musk and the Trump administration. According to Politico's sources, Musk had made it clear that he wanted Ramaswamy out of DOGE, and the latter's departure is seen as a testament to Musk's influence in the incoming administration. This development has raised questions about the dynamics within DOGE and the extent of Musk's control over the department.

New LA Wildfire Grows to 9,400 Acres, Evacuates 31,000+ People

A new wildfire that broke out north of Los Angeles on Wednesday rapidly spread to more than 9,400 acres (38 square km), fueled by strong winds and dry brush, forcing mandatory evacuation orders for more than 31,000 people.

The Hughes fire about 50 miles (80 km) north of Los Angeles further taxed firefighters in the region who have managed to bring two major fires in the metropolitan area largely under control. In just a few hours on Wednesday the new fire grew to two-thirds the size of

the Eaton Fire, one of the two monster conflagrations that have ravaged the Los Angeles area.

Officials warned people in the Castaic Lake area of Los Angeles County that they faced "immediate threat to life," while much of Southern California remained under a red-flag warning for extreme fire risk due to strong, dry winds. Some 31,000 people were under mandatory evacuation orders and another 23,000 face evacuation warnings, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna told a press conference.

India court orders seizure of 'offensive' MF Husain paintings

A court in the Indian capital, Delhi, has ordered the seizure of two "offensive" paintings by MF Husain, one of India's most famous artists.

The court on Monday granted permission for the police to seize the artworks after a complaint was filed alleging that the paintings, displayed at an art gallery and featuring two Hindu deities, "hurt religious

sentiments".

Husain, who died in 2011 aged 95, often faced backlash for the depictions of nude Hindu gods in his paintings.

The Delhi Art Gallery (DAG), which hosted the exhibition, denied any wrongdoing and stated that a "detailed" police investigation found no "cognisable offence" by the gallery.

in the global workplace. He stressed the importance of facilitating legal migration for the mutual benefit of both countries, particularly in light of the lengthy waiting periods for US visas. Jaishankar also expressed concerns about the negative impacts of illegal migration, noting that it often leads to other illegal activities, which harms both reputations and diplomatic relations. He called for improvements in visa processes, pointing out that extended waiting times, such as the 400day wait for US visas, are detrimental to bilateral relations.

In his meeting with Rubio, Jaishankar reiterated India’s commitment to legal migration and noted the importance of simplifying visa procedures to better serve both nations' interests. Jaishankar represented India at the inauguration of US President Donald Trump on January 20, delivering a letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Public Schools Vow to Shield Undocumented Students from ICE Raids

WASHINGTON, DC-At least eight large public school districts across the U.S. have pledged to protect un-documented immigrant students and their families from President Donald Trump’s mass deportation ef-forts. The Trump administration recently rolled back restrictions on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids at sensitive locations, including schools, houses of worship, and hospitals.

Federal law mandates that all children, regardless of immigration status, are entitled to a public

education. Many school districts, particularly in sanctuary cities, are now implementing measures to counter the new policies and provide reassurance to affected families. Chicago and Denver have issued specific guidelines to safeguard their students. Chicago Public Schools re-affirmed their sanctuary city laws, stating ICE agents cannot access facilities without presenting federal judicial warrants. They emphasized their refusal to share private student information with immigration au-thorities. Denver Public Schools

JB Pritzker: “What Donald Trump tried to do in the last 24 hours is illegal"

Chicago, IL –– Late yesterday, on 27th Jan, the Trump Administration abruptly cut off essential funding for critical federal programs, disregarding Congressional budget authority and putting Illinoisans at risk. This unconstitutional move threatens veterans’ services, public safety, healthcare, meals, and childcare—making life more expensive and less secure for working families.

“What Donald Trump did in the last 24 hours is illegal,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “Project 2025 laid out their plan, and now we see it in action. In Illinois, we know the harm caused when leaders

Federal guidance remains unclear, and it’s uncertain if Medicaid system failures are linked to this order or due to mismanagement. Meanwhile, crucial programs remain in jeopardy—those that help families afford childcare, support preschool education, provide meals for seniors, prevent elder abuse, expand mental healthcare, and combat homelessness. introduced protocols requiring government officials without prior ap-pointments to be kept outside school grounds. If agents attempt entry, schools are directed to go into lockdown, involving legal counsel before cooperating.

New York and Philadelphia districts have also circulated guidance advising staff to deny entry to ICE agents without judicial warrants. Similarly, Salt Lake City schools announced they would not share student immi-gration information. Conversely, Canutillo Independent

School District in El Paso, Texas, acknowledged its ongoing collaboration with ICE to maintain campus safety while emphasizing their commitment to student rights and access to education. Advocacy groups, like ImmSchools, report increased inquiries from districts seeking guidance on handling ICE encounters. While the White House stated that immigration actions at schools or churches would be rare, many districts remain cautious, preparing to navigate potential scenarios while prioritizing the safety and rights of their students.

San José Police Announce Arrests in Burglary Ring Targeting Asian American Households

SAN JOSE, CA – San José Police Chief Paul Joseph announced on January 22 the arrests of three suspects involved in a sophisticated burglary ring targeting Asian American households across the Bay Area. Since June 2024, the group is believed to have committed 78 burglaries, stealing property valued at $1 million.

The suspects, Alberto Ibarra Vallejo, 25; Gonzalo Valencia Ramos, 28; and Jaime Martinez Arroyo, 46, were arrested on January 16 with assistance from Stockton police SWAT officers. They remain in custody with-out bail, with a court appearance set for February 3.

During raids, authorities recovered 700 stolen items, including jewelry, wedding rings, luxury watches, and family

heirlooms, as well as five firearms— three con-firmed stolen.

The suspects allegedly targeted neighborhoods in West San José, Cupertino, Saratoga, Campbell, and Mountain View, specifically targeting Asian American households for highvalue items like jewelry and cash. San José Mayor Matt Mahan emphasized the emotional toll, stating, “Our AAPI community has lived in fear as home after home was broken into.”

The arrests followed months of investigation involving multiple agencies. A breakthrough came when a doorbell camera identified a suspect, leading to a coordinated effort to track and apprehend the burglars. Investigations are ongoing, with more arrests and linked burglaries expected.

The DEA also confirmed involvement in immigration enforcement efforts in Atlanta, Savannah, and Cart-ersville on Sunday.

Raids Extend Nationwide

Similar ICE operations are ongoing in Chicago, Arizona, California, Colorado, Nebraska, and Texas. Over the last few days, ICE reported 956 arrests and lodged 554 detainers.

Mass Deportation Flights

The U.S. State Department confirmed

six deportation flights over recent days, with four flights to Mexico and two to Guatemala. These flights are part of President Donald Trump’s renewed crackdown on illegal immigration. Asylum seekers are now required to remain in Mexico while their applications are processed.

Backlash in Chicago and Illinois

The raids have drawn sharp criticism, particularly in Chicago, where Illinois Governor JB Pritzker con-demned the impact on lawabiding immigrants. Speaking on CNN’s State of the Union, Pritzker stated: “We need to get rid of the violent criminals. But we also need to protect people...who are just doing what we hope immigrants will do.”

ICE reported an average of 311 daily arrests in the fiscal year ending Sept. 30. While the numbers from Georgia have not yet been disclosed, the operations are ongoing.

Newark Mayor Criticizes Warrantless Raid

"Newark will not stand by idly while people are being unlawfully terrorized," Baraka said in a statement. Among those detained was a U.S. military veteran whose documentation was reportedly questioned by ICE officers, an act Baraka called a blatant violation of Fourth Amendment rights.

NEWARK, NJ- Mayor Ras Baraka expressed outrage following an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid in Newark, which he claims was conducted without a warrant and resulted in the detainment of both undocumented residents and U.S. citizens.

"Newark will not stand by idly while people are being unlawfully terrorized," Baraka said in a statement. Among those detained was a U.S. military veteran whose documentation was reportedly questioned by ICE officers, an act Baraka called a blatant violation of Fourth Amendment rights.

The ICE operation comes as sanctuary cities nationwide brace for mass deportations promised by Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan. Targeting cities that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement, ICE reported 538 arrests as part of what Trump administration officials are calling the "largest deportation operation in history." Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt claimed on social media that "hundreds" of detainees have already been deported. While ICE declined to provide details of the Newark raid, Baraka and New Jersey lawmakers, including Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, condemned the operations. Watson Coleman called the actions "a disgrace," while Newark Council Member LaMonica McIver vowed that communities would continue to resist such "unlawful intimidation."

In response, advocacy groups and city leaders are ramping up "Know Your Rights" workshops to educate residents on how to respond to ICE enforcement. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, facing similar chal-lenges with recent arrivals from Venezuela, emphasized the importance of community preparedness.

The New Jersey Alliance for Immigrant Justice echoed these calls for vigilance, urging residents to remain informed and assert their legal protections in the face of federal immigration crackdowns.

Indian Origin Fatally Shot While Delivering Food In New Haven

NEW HAVEN, CT — A 26-year-old man from Hamden, Raviteja Koyyada, was tragically shot and killed on January 19 while delivering food in the Newhallville neighborhood of New Haven.

New Haven police responded to a 911 call at 3:58 p.m., reporting a person down at the intersection of Shepard and Goodrich Streets. Officers arrived to find Koyyada, a delivery driver for a Chinese food res-taurant, unresponsive with a gunshot wound. He was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators revealed that Koyyada was making a delivery to a residence on Shepard Street when he was shot. After the incident, his vehicle was stolen but was found abandoned nearby shortly after. No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.

The New Haven Police Department has asked witnesses or those with details about the case to call 203-946-6304 or use the anonymous tip line at 866888-TIPS (8477). The Consulate General of India in New York confirmed Koyyada’s death on January 20, stating that they are assisting his family with the repatriation of his remains. Originally from Telangana, India, Koyyada came to the U.S. in 2022 to pursue a master’s degree. The investigation remains ongoing.

New Jersey Joins Lawsuit Against Trump’s Birthright Citizenship Order

NEW JERSEY - New Jersey, led by Attorney General Matthew Platkin, is among 17 states challenging former President Donald Trump's executive order seeking to end birthright citizenship in the U.S. The lawsuit, filed in Massachusetts federal court, argues that the order violates the Fourteenth Amendment, which has up-held the principle of birthright citizenship since 1868.

"If allowed to stand, this order would strip citizenship from thousands of babies born annually in New Jer-sey and across the country, denying them the privileges of citizenship," Platkin’s office stated.

Justice Dept Marks Anti-Trafficking Month

WASHINGTGON, DC- The Department of Justice marks National Human Trafficking Prevention Month by reaffirming its unwavering commitment to combating human trafficking, supporting survivors, and pre-venting these heinous crimes. Addressing human trafficking and securing justice for victims are among the Department’s highest priorities.

The Justice Department is relentless in prosecuting traffickers, dismantling trafficking networks, and pro-tecting vulnerable individuals. While this month serves as a reminder of the gravity of human trafficking, the Department’s efforts continue year-round to combat these crimes of cruelty, exploitation, and greed.

Since the passage of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act in 2000, the Department has been at the fore-front of the nation’s fight against human trafficking in all its forms. This includes prosecuting offenders, aiding victims, and raising public awareness to prevent such crimes.

As we observe National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, the Department rededicates itself to this critical mission. It urges everyone to remain vigilant in identifying and reporting potential trafficking situations.

If you have information about human trafficking or know someone who may need help, please contact the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888 or text 233733. Together, we can continue the fight to end human trafficking and protect the most vulnerable among us.

in the U.S. if their mothers are not legally in the country or are in the U.S. temporarily, and if their fathers are neither U.S. citizens nor lawful permanent residents.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy condemned the order, stating, "The Constitution is unequivocal: children born on U.S. soil are citizens, regardless of their parents' status. This principle is foundational to our na-tion."

The lawsuit seeks a preliminary injunction to block the executive order, with additional states and jurisdictions, including California, New York, Massachusetts, and the District of Columbia, joining the effort.

Separately, the ACLU filed its own challenge, calling the order an “egregious overreach.” Amol Sinha, Ex-ecutive Director of the ACLU of New Jersey, emphasized that "Trump’s administration cannot override the Constitution."

New Jersey's leadership in this lawsuit underscores its commitment to protecting civil rights and liberties for all residents.

Pain Clinic Settles Fraud and Opioid Case for $3.5M

ATLANTA, GA- Dr. Kamal Kabakibou and his practice, "The Center for Pain Management," have agreed to pay $3.5 million to settle allegations of violating the False Claims Act (FCA) and the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). The settlement addresses claims of billing for unnecessary testing and pre-signing opioid pre-scriptions for nurse practitioners to dispense while Dr. Kabakibou was overseas. The settlement includes a five-year monitoring agreement with the DEA and a three-year integrity agree-ment with the

Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG), requiring annual independent reviews of claims.

Chicago School Mistakenly Blocks Secret Service Agents Amid Immigration Fears

CHICAGO, IL- Hamline Elementary School officials in Chicago denied entry to federal agents on Friday, mistakenly believing they were Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. It was later confirmed the agents were from the U.S. Secret Service investigating a potential threat. Around 11:15 a.m., the agents, carrying Department of Homeland Security (DHS) identification, attempted to access the school. Rumors of ICE activity had heightened community fears following the Trump administration's crackdown on undocumented immigrants. Chicago Public Schools (CPS) Chief Education Officer Bogdana Chkoumbova said school staff acted on established protocols to protect students. The Secret Service clarified its agents were investigating a threat against a protected government official. “Agents

identified themselves to the school principal, provided business cards, and left without incident,” said Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi. The

agency emphasized it does not enforce immigra-tion laws.

New York City to Receive a New Area Code Amid Growing Demand

NEW YORK, NY- New York City will soon have a new area code, according to state officials. The New York State Public Service Commission recently approved an allservices area code overlay for the city, signaling the introduction of an additional three-digit code.

The new overlay will serve parts of Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, the Bronx, and the Marble Hill neigh-borhood in Manhattan. While the specific code has not yet been chosen, officials anticipate it will be as-signed in the coming months. Once activated, the new area code will apply to all new phone numbers in these areas as the current codes—347, 718, 917, and

929—reach capacity.

Currently, New York City has seven area codes. The most recent addition was in 2011, when the 929 area code was introduced. "There is a clear need for more telephone numbers as a result of economic growth and activity in the New York City metro areas," said Rory M. Christian, Chair of the New York State Public Service Commission, in a statement on Thursday. "The new area code overlay will address the expansion of telecommunication services in this region and support future demand."

This expansion highlights the ongoing development and technological growth within the New York City metropolitan area.

Hamline Principal Natasha Ortega reassured families, stating, “We will not open our doors for ICE. We are here to protect our children.”

open our doors for ICE. We are here to protect our children.” CPS reiterated its adherence to the Illinois Trust Act and Chicago’s Welcom-ing City Ordinance, which limits cooperation with immigration authorities. Federal policies on immigration enforcement at sensitive locations, such as schools, have sparked fear in immigrant communities. Critics argue the removal of protections underlines concerns about safety and accessibility. The incident underscores the tension surrounding immigration enforcement and the importance of main-taining a safe environment for students amid evolving federal policies.

Federal Immigration Authorities Allowed to Target Schools and Churches

WASHINGTON, DC- Federal immigration authorities will now be permitted to target schools and churches following President Donald Trump’s revocation of a 2011 directive that barred arrests in “sensitive” areas.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced Tuesday that it would roll back the policy, which it claimed had hindered law enforcement efforts in or near designated sensitive locations. The original di-rective prohibited Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) of-ficers from arresting suspected undocumented immigrants in locations such as schools, houses of worship, hospitals, funerals, weddings, and public demonstrations.

In a statement, a DHS spokesperson justified the policy change, emphasizing that law enforcement officials would exercise “common sense” when making arrests in these areas. “This action empowers the brave men and women in CBP and ICE to enforce our immigration laws and apprehend criminal aliens — including murderers and rapists — who have illegally entered our country,” the spokesperson said. The move has sparked concerns among immigration advocates, who argue that it could deter vulnerable populations from accessing essential services or attending community activities for fear of arrest. Criminals will no longer find refuge in America's schools and churches to evade arrest.
