A look at Obama and Harris's two-decade relationship

Former President Barack Obama returned to the convention stage in his hometown of Chicago earlier tonight, 20 years after his own convention debut thrust him into the national spotlight. Obama, 63, and Harris, 59, met at a California fundraiser in 2004. Harris was an early supporter of Obama's candidacy. Now Obama - and his popular wife Michelle Obama - are trying to return the favour and help propel her to the Oval Office.

Harris, then a San Francisco district attorney, was in the crowd of more than 15,000 people as then-junior senator announced his longshot bid for the White House on the steps of the Old State Capitol in the Illinois capital city of Springfield in February 2007.

In 2012, at Obama's second convention, she was given a coveted speaking role, appeared just before former president Bill Clinton.

"We need to move forward." she said in her speech, a phrase she has reprised in her 2024 campaign.

Obama contrasts Harris campaign to Trump's

Obama says that Trump and his "well-heeled donors" believe that "one group's gain" is "another group's loss".

"For them, freedom means that the powerful can do whatever they please, whether it's fire workers trying to organise a union or put poison in out rivers or avoid paying taxes like everyone has to do," he adds.

Democrats, he says, "have a broader idea of freedom" that allows workers to provide for their familes, "breathe clean air and drink clean water" and send their kids to school "without worrying if they'll come home".

"That's the America Kamala Harris and Tim Walz believe in".

'Yes, She Can' Barack Obama's Strong Support For Kamala Harris

The Democratic National Convention officially anointed US Vice President Kamala Harris as a candidate for the 2024 US Presidential Election against Donald Trump, who is seeking a second term.

The Democratic National Convention started with US President Joe Biden giving a fiery speech against Donald Trump, a former US President facing several court cases and survivor of an assassination attempt.

Here are top 10 points in this big story:

• The DNC, the biggest event of the year for the party, officially anointed US Vice President Kamala Harris as a candidate for the 2024 US Presidential Election against Donald Trump, who is seeking a second term.

• The four-day event, which is taking place in Chicago, began yesterday and saw Joe Biden giving a fiery speech against Mr Trump and calling him a "loser". "He called soldiers who gave their lives for this country, suckers and losers. Who does he think he is?" Mr Biden asked. "Trump bows down to (Vladimir) Putin. I never have and Kamala Harris will never do it," President Biden said.

• On day one, President Biden criticised Mr Trump's "America First" doctrine, which he said had damaged the nation's global image, contrasting his own administration's efforts to unite Europe and counter Russian aggression.

• Kamala Harris will make a big speech on August 22, the last day of the event, but one of the notable speakers today will be her husband, Doug Emhoff, a successful lawyer. If Harris wins, then Emhoff will be the first "first gentleman" of the United States.

• The convention also served as a farewell for Joe Biden, who withdrew his nomination in an unprecedented move witnessed in modern US electoral history. In 1968, President Lyndon B Johnson declared in the

middle of the Vietnam War that he would not run for re-election.

• What followed after a fiery speech was a four-minute-long standing ovation and Kamala Harris making a surprise appearance to thank President Biden for being "incredible".

• "I love you," the tearful 81-year-old president told the crowd to deafening cheers, less than a month after dropping out of the White House race against Donald Trump and passing the torch to his vice president.

• Today, former US President Barack Obama will hand over the baton of the party's future to Ms Harris. Obama posted on social media that his Democratic National Convention address will lay out "what's at stake" and why Harris and her running mate Tim Walz "should be our next president and vice president."

• Kamala Harris will hold a rally ahead of Obama's speech in the Milwaukee basketball arena where Trump attended the Republican convention just a month ago. The 18,000-seater arena has been chosen deliberately to pinch Trump, who is rattled to see the US President's deputy filling venues. In a recent poll, Ms Harris had a marginal lead against Donald Trump.

• Apart from Obama, Hilary Clinton - the first woman to secure a major US party's nomination for the presidential election, also addressed the delegates yesterday. "As president, she (Kamala Harris) will always have our backs and she will be a fighter for us. She will fight to lower costs for hard-working families, open the doors wide for good paying jobs and, yes, she will restore abortion rights nationwide," Ms Clinton said

Obama

wraps up speech with 'let's get to work'

As he wraps up his speech, Obama says he believes America yearns for a return "to an America where we work together".

He describes that America as one that taps "the better angels of our nature".

"That's what this election is about," he says. He adds that "if we each do our part over the next 77 days" and "work like we've never worked before", they will see Harris elected as president.

"We'll elect leaders up and down the ballot who will fight for the hopeful, forward-looking America we believe in," he says.

"Together, we too will build a country that is more secure and more just, more equal and more free."

"Let's get to work," he concludes.

"God bless you, and God bless the United States of America."

Obama says the country wants to be better, not bitter and divided

Despite the chaos of the world right now, Obama says that there is "good news" in America.

"The vast majority of us don't want to live in a country that's bitter and divided," he adds. "We want something better. We want to be better."

"And the joy and the excitement that we're seeing around this campaign tells us we're not alone."

Crowd chants with Obama

A few moments ago, Obama led the crowd in a chant of "Yes she can," an echo of his slogan "Yes we can". Obama returns to another one of his classic political speech themes in saying Harris and Walz believe in an America "where 'We The People' includes everyone." "And despite what our politics might suggest, I think most Americans understand that.

Barack and Michelle Obama electrify Democrats but warn of tight race

Michelle and Barack Obama gave resounding endorsements of Kamala Harris on Tuesday night at the Democratic National Convention, exhorting party supporters across the US to turn out and vote to defeat Donald Trump in November.

"Hope is making a comeback," Mrs Obama told the crowd at the DNC in Chicago, echoing her husband's campaign promise of "hope and change".

In their back-to-back speeches, the Democratic Party's most popular figures praised Ms Harris, while excoriating Trump - whose presidency was characterised by "bluster and chaos", in the words of Mr Obama.

But the couple also warned their party not to lose sight of what remains an extremely tight race amid the

Trump to Hold First Outdoor Rally PostAssassination Attempt

Asheboro, United States: Donald Trump will be behind bulletproof glass Wednesday for his first outdoor rally since surviving an assassination attempt, but the Republican faces a bigger challenge in matching the whitehot enthusiasm of crowds flocking to Kamala Harris.

The event in Asheboro, North Carolina, a battleground state in the tight November 5 election, is a chance for Trump to reclaim his longtime dominance in staging spectacular rallies.

enthusiasm for Ms Harris's campaign. They stressed the election would be decided in a handful of key swing states.

"Make no mistake, it will be a fight,” said the 63-year-old former president Mr Obama.

Michelle Obama, 60, stressed the point further. "We need to vote in numbers that erase any doubt," she said. "We need to overwhelm any effort to suppress us."

Mr Obama emphasised America's preparedness for a "new chapter", adding: "We are ready for a President Kamala Harris. And Kamala Harris is ready for the job."

The Obamas' appeal to Democrats to turn out in November exposed a deeper party anxiety about the narrow race between Ms Harris and Trump, who retains a tight hold on his loyal base of supporters across the country.

Ms Harris has a slender lead in national polling averages but pollsters caution that the race remains a virtual tie in the handful of battleground states that will ultimately decide who wins under America's electoral college system.

Though Ms Harris is technically the incumbent candidate, she has described herself and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, as the underdogs in the race.

"Ugly, Misogynistic, Racist Lies": Michelle Obama Blasts Donald Trump

New Delhi: Former United States First Lady Michelle Obama, 60, turned back the clock Tuesday at the Democratic convention in Chicago, delivering a passionate speech in support of "my girl" Kamala Harris for November's presidential election and warning Donald Trump "hope is making a

comeback". The Trump campaign has attempted to weaponise Ms Harris' racial identity; a tactic perhaps best epitomised by Mr Trump's "I didn't know she was Black... till she happened to 'turn Black' and now she wants to be known as 'Black'" swipe at Ms Harris (to a Black reporter) last month. "For years Trump did everything to make people fear us (referring to Mr Obama and herself). His narrow view of the world made him feel threatened by two highly successful and educated people who happened to be Black... who is going to tell him the job he is seeking is now one of those 'Black jobs'?" she said accusing Mr Trump of "ugly, misogynistic, (and) racist lies".

Trump's Florida Golf

Resorts Thrive Amid Other Business Decline

Donald J. Trump’s golf club in Jupiter, Florida, where multi-million-dollar villas flank the greens of an 18-hole course, reflects the new geography of his family business. Long based in New York, the Trump Organization has gravitated recently to Florida’s southeast coast, where its golf and resort properties now pay the bills.

A decade ago, before Trump ran for president for the first time as a Republican in 2016, his golf courses and

New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez resigns after bribery convictions

Menendez was found guilty in a bribery scheme in July.

Bob Menendez's resignation from the US Senate became official Tuesday, a much-anticipated move that follows his conviction on bribery charges in July. The New Jersey Democrat was found guilty on 16 counts tied to a scheme where he accepted bribes, including gold bars and a Mercedes-Benz, to aid the Qatari and Egyptian governments. He will face a potentially lengthy prison term at his sentencing in October. Menendez, 70, has maintained his innocence and said he plans to appeal.

resorts were a drain on the company's cash flow, which mostly came from real estate, according to a Reuters analysis of court and tax records and other financial disclosures.

But today, the golf and resort business is the biggest driver of the company’s cash flow — accounting for about four-fifths of the approximately $80 million in cash after operating expenses that will be generated this year by the hundreds of companies ultimately owned by Donald Trump, known collectively as the Trump Organization. The group’s annual revenues are over $600 million, according to the Reuters estimate.

New Delhi: In a charged and emotional farewell speech at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, President Joe Biden delivered a scathing critique of former President Donald Trump, labelling him a "loser" and vigorously defending his own legacy. "Donald Trump says we are losing, but he is the loser," Mr Biden declared, drawing a contrast between his administration's achievements and what he described as the failures of the Trump presidency. "He is dead wrong. Name a country in the world that does not think we are the leading nation in the world. Who could lead the world if not us?" "He called soldiers who gave their lives for this country, suckers and losers. Who does he think he is?"

Mr Biden asked. "Trump bows down to (Vladimir) Putin. I never have and Kamala Harris will never do it."

Mr Biden criticised Mr Trump's "America First" doctrine, which he said had damaged the nation's global image, contrasting his own administration's efforts to unite Europe and counter Russian aggression. He cited the expansion of NATO, with the addition of Finland and Sweden, as an example to the success of his foreign policy.

Shocker! 7 Indian Male Students Arrested in Prostitution Case in Texas

This is a case that will shock the daylights of many Indian parents who send their kids to study in the United States for a brighter future. A major operation that took place in Denton, Texas known as “Prostitution Demand Suppression Operation” led to the arrest of 14 male individuals. Out of these individuals, 7 are students from India. The operation was aimed at arresting offenders who were attempting to purchase sexual favors for money. The arrested Indian-origin male students are Nikhil Bandi facing charge of evading arrest detention; Monish Galla under Solicitation of Prostitution; Amit Kumar also charged with solicitation of prostitution; Nikhil Kummari, evading arrest detention, Jaikiran Reddy Mekala, Solicitation of Prostitution Under 18, Evading Arrest Detention; Karthik Rayapati Solicitation of Prostitution; Nabin Shrestha also under the charges of Solicitation of Prostitution. All of the students are from Denton, Texas and one is from Little Elm. One of the arrested individuals – Jaikiran Reddy Mekala faces more serious charges for trying to solicit minors which is a second-degree felony.

Solicitation of prostitution is a state jail felony. The police are also following leads on other persons engaged in prostitution. This unusual case where students enrolled in colleges trying to buy sexual services hits a new-low for the Indian community and there are fears that other Indian-origin individuals may also be involved. Sudden, unnatural deaths as well cases of mugging in the past one year across the country, led to a paranoia about the safety of Indian students or students of color in America. But a recent case that was unearthed has created a newer fear

--- are some Indian students getting too reckless with their new-found freedom. As soon as the report of 7 Indian students arrested in a case where they were soliciting for prostitution came about, the community was left reeling with immense disbelief. For far too-long Indian students who came from India, were focused on studying hard and working hard out of their study hours to supplement some support for their livelihood to ease the financial burden on their parents who very often took loans to send their kids abroad.

The Denton County Sherriff’s Office in Texas on August 14 and 15 executed a Prostitution Demand Suppression Operation arresting 14 persons – 7 of whom of Indian origin. Some of those arrested are students from University of North Texas. Some of the others like Monish Galla just finished their studies from University of North Texas and had just started their first jobs. As reports are still emerging some also say that not all of them may be students but young professionals. The report went viral on several platforms and social media and desi WhatsApp groups. Many of the commentators expressed shock and said, that they never expected Indian students to be this footloose in America. We come from a country where student years or career making years are taken with a lot of seriousness. Some others commented that they were shocked and embarrassed for their parents back home in India. One commentator on a community Facebook group who didn’t want their name in the print said, “News such as these travels like wildfires. Many Indian parents will wake up to multiple texts from relatives faking concerns after hearing this ‘masaledar news.’”

Pannun stars in ‘another Wednesday for the Indian social media disinfo factory’

The Kolkata Police are not alone in their fight against misinformation in the digital world. Gerry Shih, India bureau chief of The Washington Post, highlighted the ongoing issue by sharing a screenshot of a doctored social media post on his X (formerly Twitter) handle. The post falsely claimed to be a Washington Post article and alleged that Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a Sikh separatist, staged an attack on himself to implicate India. Shih, recognized as one of the sharpest foreign correspondents in India, exposed the misinformation without directly engaging with the original poster. Instead, he posted a screenshot, ensuring that the person behind the fake news wouldn't realize they had been exposed. The doctored post, already garnering 3.2K retweets, is a stark example of the pervasive disinformation spread on Indian social media.

The fabricated article's headline read, "An assassination plot on the US soil reveals a darker side: Pannun may have staged an attack on himself to implicate India." However, the actual Washington Post article, published on April 29, 2024, is titled, "An assassination plot on American

soil reveals a darker side of Modi’s India."

The genuine article discusses India's alleged involvement in the assassinations of prominent Khalistani separatist leaders abroad, including six activists killed under mysterious circumstances in Canada, Pakistan, and the UK.

The Washington Post article further details strained India-Canada relations, especially after Canadian Prime Minister Justin

Trudeau accused India of involvement in the murders of three men on Canadian soil. Despite the accusations, U.S. authorities have emphasized that no definitive evidence links India to these plots. This incident underscores the ongoing challenge of combating misinformation and the significant impact it can have on public perception and international relations.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party urges India to extradite Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to face trial

Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s secretarygeneral Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday asked India to extradite deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to face trial as he accused her of plotting to thwart the country’s revolution.

Hasina, 76, resigned and fled to India on August 5 following massive protests by students and others against her government over a controversial quota system in government jobs.

“It is our call to you that you should hand her over to the government of Bangladesh in a legal way.

“The people of this country have given the decision for her trial. Let her face that trial,” Fakhrul was quoted as saying by the Daily Star newspaper.

Talking to reporters after placing a wreath at the grave of former President and BNP founder Zia-ur Rahman in the city, Fakhrul said India is seemingly not keeping its commitment towards democracy by providing shelter to her.

“Staying there, she has started various plots to thwart the revolution that happened in Bangladesh,” he alleged. Over 230 people were killed in the incidents of violence that erupted across the country following the fall of the Hasina-led Awami League government, taking the death toll to more than 600 since the massive protest by students first started in mid-July.

Starbucks' New CEO to Supercommute 1,600 Km by Corporate Jet

Starbucks' CEO Brian Niccol will have an unusually long commute to work as he becomes the coffee giant's new chief next month. Mr Niccol who lives in California will travel 1,600 kilometres every day to the company's headquarters in Seattle.

As per his offer letter, Mr Niccol will use a corporate jet for his commute. Even when he is not traveling for work, he will be expected to work from the Seattle office at least three days a week, as per Starbucks' hybrid work policy which has been in place since 2023.

The 50-year-old will be paid a base salary of $1.6 million every year and can earn a cash bonus of $3.6 million to $7.2 million depending on his performance.

He will also be eligible for annual equity awards worth up to $23 million. This is not the first time Mr Niccol has been part of such a supercommute arrangement. He successfully negotiated a similar deal when he was the CEO of Chipotle in 2018. Chipotle was headquartered in Colorado, a 15-minute drive from Mr Niccol's last working place. But the Mexican fast food chain moved its headquarters from Denver to California three months after he was appointed CEO.

India is seemingly not keeping its commitment towards democracy by providing shelter to her, says BNP secretary-general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir

weakened Bangladesh’s independence and hindered the country’s progress for the last 15 years”.

During her regime, she made a debt burden of Taka 18 lakh crores for the nation and nearly $100 billion were siphoned off from the country, Fakhrul said, adding that all institutions of the country were destroyed during her misrule.

The interim government has been doing a commendable job, he said.

An interim government was formed after the fall of the Hasina-led government, and 84-year-old Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus was named its Chief Adviser. The BNP secretary general said the people of this country do not consider her offences as minor. He said they think her “fascist rule has

Twelve killed in Israeli strike on Gaza school, civil defence says

At least 12 Palestinians have been killed in an Israeli air strike on a school housing displaced people in Gaza City, the Hamas-run Civil Defence authority says.

A spokesman said rescuers were struggling to recover a number of missing people believed to be trapped under the rubble at Mustafa Hafez school in the western Rimal neighbourhood. The Israeli military said it had targeted a Hamas command and control centre

inside the school, and that it had taken steps to mitigate risk of harming civilians.

Earlier, it announced that troops had recovered the bodies of six Israeli hostages being held in the Khan Younis area.

The men were among the 251 people kidnapped by Hamas-led gunmen in the 7 October attacks on southern Israel last year, when about 1,200 people were also killed.

Israel launching an air and ground campaign to destroy Hamas in response, during which more than 40,170 people have been killed in Gaza, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. The camera then pans to show rubble on the ground beside the completely flattened remains of a twostorey building.

Trinidad and Tobago refloats mystery oil spill tanker

The mysterious tanker that caused a major oil spill after capsizing off Trinidad and Tobago in February has been successfully refloated, the government said.

The operation was completed on Monday, and the vessel - known only as

the Gulfstream - will now be inspected by divers before being towed away, the energy ministry said. The ship was found with no crew onboard after running aground and overturning off southwestern Tobago. No emergency calls were made and local authorities have been unable to find anyone responsible for the incident. Since then some 50,000 barrels of oil have leaked, damaging the Caribbean island's pristine beaches and prompting the government to declare a national emergency. In a statement, the energy ministry said the Gulfstream was now afloat in an overturned state 60m (197ft) deep in the sea, secured and supported by tugs.

The main task of this interim government, which was formed through a revolution and mass upsurge, is to hand over the power to the public representatives by holding an election, Fakhrul added.

“It will definitely take some time to clear the garbage the Awami League government created. It will take time to hold a proper and fair election,” he said.

Ministers pledge to return more illegal migrants

The Home Office has outlined plans to tackle illegal immigration, including deploying 100 new intelligence officers to target people smuggling gangs. Ministers are also promising a "large surge" in the number of flights removing failed asylum seekers and others in the UK illegally.

As part of its plan the government says it will reopen immigration removal centres in Hampshire and Oxfordshire, adding 290 beds.

A body recovered near the luxury yacht which sank off the coast of Sicily is believed to be that of chef Recaldo Thomas.

Disney drops bid to stop allergy death lawsuit over Disney+ terms

Disney has withdrawn its claim that a man could not sue it over the death of his wife because of terms he signed up to in a free trial of Disney+.

Jeffrey Piccolo filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Disney and the owners of a restaurant after his wife died in 2023 from a severe allergic reaction following a meal at Disney World, in Florida. Disney had argued the case should instead go to arbitration because of a clause in the terms and conditions of its Disney+ streaming service, which Mr Piccolo had briefly signed up for in 2019. But, following a backlash, it has decided the matter can now be heard in court.

"We believe this situation warrants a sensitive approach to expedite a resolution for the family who have experienced such a painful loss," Disney's Josh D'Amaro told the BBC in a statement.

"As such, we've decided to waive our right to arbitration and have the matter proceed in court."

Lawyers for Mr Piccolo said: "Attempts by corporations like Disney to avoid

Libya central bank reopens after kidnapped official freed

Libya's central bank (CBL) says it has resumed operations following the release of a bank official who had been abducted from his home.

CBL confirmed the release of Musaab Muslamm, head of the bank's information technology department, who was taken on Sunday by an "unidentified party."

It said Mr Msallem had been taken from the capital, Tripoli, and that other bank employees had been threatened with kidnapping too.

CBL had halted all work, refusing to reopen until Mr Msallem was freed.

jury trials should be looked at with skepticism", adding that Mr Piccolo will "continue to pursue justice on behalf of his beloved wife at the trial court level".

"He also hopes these recent events have raised awareness of the millions of people of all ages and walks of life who suffer with food allergies", his lawyers said. In arbitration, a dispute is overseen by a neutral third party. It benefits those wanting to avoid a lengthy trial, but means evidence would not be put in

front of a jury.

Jamie Cartwright, partner at the law firm Charles Russell Speechlys, suggested Disney's change of heart was motivated by the "adverse publicity" its initial approach had generated. "In attempting to push the claim into a confidential setting on what were very tenuous grounds, it succeeded only in creating the very publicity and attention it likely wanted to avoid," he told the BBC.

Income Tax Clearance for Foreign Travel Rarely Needed: CBDT

New Delhi: (IANS) The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) on Tuesday clarified that it is being erroneously reported that all Indian citizens must obtain an income tax clearance certificate (ITCC) before leaving the country and said that this position is factually incorrect.

"As per Section 230 of the Act, every person is not required to obtain a tax clearance certificate. Only certain persons, in respect of whom

circumstances exist which make it necessary to obtain a tax clearance certificate, are required to obtain the said certificate.

This position has been in the statute since 2003 and remains unchanged even with the amendments vide Finance (No. 2) Act, 2024," a CBDT statement said. India Urges Citizens In Russian Regions To Relocate Over Security Concerns

Moscow: The Indian embassy on Wednesday advised its citizens, including students, residing in Bryansk, Belgorod, and Kursk regions of Russia to relocate temporarily to safer places, citing recent "security incidents" in these areas following the intensification of the Russia-Ukraine war.

The security advisory was issued hours after Russia's Belgorod border region

India's Growth "Exemplary" Despite Covid, Ukraine War: RBI Governor Exclusive

New Delhi: India's growth has been "exemplary" despite the challenges of the last few years, including the Covid pandemic, the war in Ukraine and other global tensions, Reserve Bank Governor Shaktikanta Das has said. In an exclusive interview with NDTV Editor-in-Chief Sanjay Pugalia, Mr Das said the last five or six years have been of "great volatility". Covid alone, he said, had come in waves - after the first, the second wave and the Delta strain. Then came the war in Ukraine with its allied sanction, making navigation difficult.

"The Covid crisis has led to permanent output loss in every economy across the world. This output loss is looking permanent... In India's case, the way we have come out of the crisis is exemplary... and now, the financial sector has emerged stronger," he said.

To stay afloat in this period, the Reserve Bank has taken more than 100 measures and coordinated with the government. Today, inflation is coming under control, but achieving 4 per cent is still some distance away. The financial sector today is much more stable and resilient than it

Kabul: The Taliban's morality ministry has dismissed more than 280 members of the security force for failure to grow a beard and have detained more than 13,000 people in Afghanistan for "immoral acts" in the past year, officials said on Tuesday. The Ministry for the Prevention of Vice and Propagation of Virtue said in its annual operations update that around half of those detained had been let go after 24 hours. It did not break down the type of the alleged offences or gender of the detainees. Mohibullah Mokhlis, Director of Planning and Legislation at the ministry, told a press conference officials had destroyed 21,328 musical instruments in the past year and prevented thousands of computer operators from selling "immoral and unethical" films in markets. It had identified 281 security force members for not having a beard and they had been dismissed, he said, in line with their interpretation of Islamic law.

Asked about inflation, Mr Das said the

"But we cannot take fuel and food out of the equation and say inflation is falling... It is not looking at the issue through the common person's lens. “Everytime I have had a successful film, people have said ‘sequel bana lo’. They told me after ‘New York’, 'Tiger', and ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan', but I have never made it. So, I am the first one to say that just because a film is successful, a sequel shouldn’t be made.”

“A sequel should only be made if you truly find a story worthy of taking that story forward.”

Kabir said that he never said that he is “working on the ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ sequel.”

“All I have said is, Yes, maybe.. Sometimes a good script comes up that is worthy of becoming a ‘Bajrangi’ sequel. Then I would love to do it. But not only because it is one of the most successful films in the industry; therefore, it needs a sequel. No,” he shared. “Bajrangi Bhaijaan,” which was released in 2015, is currently the seventh highest-grossing Indian film and fourth highest-grossing Hindi film.

Or we will enter another cycle of panic and neglect? How we respond now and in the years to come will prove a critical test for Europe and the world," he added.

Centre's U-Turn On Lateral Entry Amid Pressure From Ally, Opposition

Mr Singh's letter, citing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's directions, called for a need for lateral entry to align with the principles of equity and social justice enshrined in the Constitution, particularly concerning the provision of reservations.

New Delhi: The government today requested the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to withdraw its advertisement for lateral entry into bureaucracy, in a stunning reversal following intense opposition criticism and pressure from ally Chirag Paswan, who had also expressed reservations against the move. Prime Minister Narendra Modi believes that the "move should be aligned with social justice", Union Minister Jitender Singh wrote in a letter to the UPSC chief. The UPSC last week issued the advertisement seeking "talented and motivated Indian nationals" for lateral recruitment to various senior positions within the Union government. These positions included Joint Secretary,

"Nation

Director, and Deputy Secretary in 24 ministries, with a total of 45 posts up for grabs. "While most of the major lateral entries before 2014 were made in an adhoc manner, including cases of alleged favouritism, efforts of our government have been to make the process institutionally driven, transparent and open," the minister's letter read. "The Prime Minister is of the firm belief that the process of lateral entry must be aligned with the principles of equity and social justice enshrined in our Constitution, particularly concerning

Lateral entry into the bureaucracy refers to recruitments from outside traditional government service cadres, such as the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), to fill mid and senior-level positions in government departments.

The move triggered a debate on lateral entry into bureaucracy, with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi denouncing the process as an "attack on Dalits". The ruling BJP countered by pointing out that the concept emerged under a Congress-led government.

Chicago: US President Joe Biden will give a bittersweet farewell address at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Monday, passing the torch to Kamala Harris as the party's nominee for November's election.Less than a month after his stunning withdrawal and Harris's astonishing ascent, Biden can expect a hero's send-off from many of the same people who helped push him out due to concerns about his age. The 81-year-old is expected to say that Harris -- America's first female, Black and South Asian vice president -- is the best person to finish the job he started off protecting American democracy from Republican rival Donald Trump.

Harris arrives in Chicago for Democratic convention

Kamala Harris has arrived in Chicago for the Democratic National Convention (DNC), where she will be formally confirmed as the party's presidential candidate.

She flew into O'Hare airport on Air Force Two after a day of campaigning in the swing state of Pennsylvania with her running mate, Tim Walz. Her Republican rival, Donald Trump, held a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday. Ms Harris is expected to join President Biden on stage when he addresses the convention on Monday. Pennsylvania has been a crucial battleground in recent presidential races, with Donald Trump winning the state in 2016 and Joe Biden in 2020. A new CBS News poll shows Mr Trump and Ms Harris are neck and neck in the swing states of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin. In a speech on Sunday, Ms Harris indirectly criticised her opponent, suggesting he was a "coward" whose politics focused on putting down rivals.

WASHINGTON, DC- The FBI has launched a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about the various frauds and scams affecting the public and to encourage reporting to law enforcement. This initiative will provide the public with crucial information on recognizing different types of fraud, tips for prevention, and guidance on reporting incidents to protect others. A common strategy used by scammers involves creating a false sense of urgency or isolation. They may exploit emotions such as trust, empathy, or fear, or promise financial gains, companionship, or job opportunities to push victims into quick decisions. The FBI advises the public to “Take A Beat,” encouraging people to resist the pressure to act immediately and to carefully assess any suspicious situation. According to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), losses

Fraud Claims Force DHS to Suspend Migrant Entry Initiative

WASHINGTON, DC -The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has temporarily suspended a migrant entry program that allowed hundreds of thousands of migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela (CHNV) to bypass standard immigration protocols and fly directly into the United States. This decision follows an internal audit that uncovered numerous fraudulent applications, including the use of deceased sponsors’ Social Security numbers and fake addresses.

A DHS spokesperson stated, “Out of an abundance of caution, DHS has temporarily paused the issuance of advanced travel authorizations for new beneficiaries while it undertakes a review of supporter applications. DHS will restart application processing as quickly as possible, with appropriate safeguards.”

Inspector General Warns of ‘Critical Problem’ After Immigration Officials Allegedly Lose Track of Unaccompanied Children

WASHINGTON, DC- The Department of Homeland Security’s internal watchdog has identified an “urgent issue” in how immigration officials handle cases involving unaccompanied migrant children. A new interim report reveals that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has been unable to track over 32,000 unaccompanied minors released from government custody in the past five years, many of

whom failed to appear for immigration court hearings.

Inspector General Joseph Cuffari’s report, sent to Congress, highlights the risks these children face, including trafficking and exploitation, due to ICE’s inability to monitor their whereabouts.

The report covers 2019 to 2023, during which over 448,000 unaccompanied children were transferred from ICE to the Department of Health & Human Services for placement. The watchdog found that ICE’s lack of adequate

staffing and reliance on manual processes hindered their ability to issue court notices and track these children effectively.

The report urges ICE to implement an automated system for tracking court appearances and maintaining address information to ensure the safety of these vulnerable children. ICE officials have agreed to this recommendation but also noted that the report may not fully capture the complexities of their tracking challenges.

Ram Mandir Float Celebrates India’s Heritage, Not Division

For over 41 years, New York's India Day Parade has been a vibrant celebration of Indian culture and diversity, organized by the Federation of Indian Associations (FIA), an organization founded in 1970. This year, the parade includes a float representing the Ram Mandir, a newly inaugurated Hindu temple in Ayodhya, which has sparked controversy. However, parade organizers and supporters maintain that the float is a symbol of Indian culture and heritage.

Dr. Avinash Gupta, a respected New Jersey cardiologist and president of the FIA, defended the inclusion of the float, emphasizing that it is not an expression of anti-Muslim sentiment but rather a celebration of India's rich cultural legacy. He highlighted the inclusive nature of the parade, noting the participation of Muslim, Christian, and Sikh organizations. "We are allinclusive and we celebrate our unity and diversity," Dr. Gupta said, adding that the issue of the temple's location was resolved by India's Supreme Court in 2019. The court ruled in favor of handing over the land to Hindus while

"140 Crore Indians Worried About Safety Of Hindus In Bangladesh": PM Modi

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, delivering his 11th consecutive Independence Day speech at Delhi's Red Fort, said 140 crore Indians are worried about the safety of Hindus in Bangladesh, who have faced attacks during the recent political unrest in the country following the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

"140 crore Indians worried about the safety of the Hindus, the minorities in Bangladesh," PM Modi said. "India will always be a well-wisher of Bangladesh's progress. We hope the situation normalises in Bangladesh soon. Indians want the security of Hindus, and minorities there to be ensured."

On August 5, Prime Minister Hasina, aged 76, fled Bangladesh by helicopter to India as protesters overran the streets of Dhaka. Her 15-year rule, marked by allegations of human rights abuses, came to a dramatic end.

Ram Mandir Float Sparks NYC Parade Debate

The annual India Day Parade in New York, a long-standing celebration of culture and diversity, is facing controversy this year over a planned float representing the Ram Mandir—a Hindu temple in Ayodhya, India, inaugurated in January 2024. The float’s inclusion has sparked backlash from several organizations, which argue that it is divisive and antiMuslim.

There have been objections from groups including Indian American Muslim council.

conference outside New York City Hall. The event featured representatives from various groups such as the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Hindus for Human Rights, Black Lives Matter Greater, and the Sikh Coalition. David Kalal of Hindus for Human Rights criticized the float, describing it as a glorification of a violent history and a manifestation of Hindu nationalism, which he claims conflicts with democratic values. Despite these objections, parade organizers, led by Ankur Vaidya of the Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) for NY-NJ-CT-NE, defend the float as a celebration of a significant cultural landmark for Hindus. Vaidya criticized the criticism as a distortion of facts and a distraction from the parade’s tradition of inclusivity, which has always featured participants from various faiths.

Washington: The United States is in touch with India and other countries in the region regarding the situation in Bangladesh and is seeking an end to the violence there, a State Department official has said. The float, organized by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad of America (VHPA), is an exact replica of the newly constructed temple in India. Shyam Tiwari, a VHPA spokesperson, emphasized that the temple was built after due legal process and criticized those opposing the float for spreading "vitriolic hatred against Hindus." The VHPA has encouraged devotees of Lord Ram to join the parade and walk alongside the float, showcasing their devotion. The inclusion of the Ram Mandir float in the parade is seen by many as a rightful celebration of a significant cultural and religious milestone for Hindus, reflecting the diversity and unity that the India Day Parade has always championed.

Bottled cold coffee can lead to insulin spikes; experts elucidate

Summers call for refreshing coolers and ice coffees. Cold coffees are a delicious stapleeasy to make and even easier to polish off! With bottled cold coffees flying off the racks, we look at their nutritional impact (or lack thereof) on the human body, and find out ways to counter and reduce insulin spike.

“Most of the bottled cold coffees contain an average of 15gm per 100 ml added sugar. This added sugar can cause insulin spikes due to a blood glucose level spike,” shared Dr Monal Velangi, Senior Dietitian, Dept. of Nutrition and Dietetics, K J Somaiya Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre.

“Frequent drinking of bottled cold coffee can cause blood insulin levels to increase often, which may eventually lead to insulin resistance—a condition in which cells lose their sensitivity to the effects of insulin. If left untreated, this may eventually result in increased blood sugar and increases the risk of type 2 diabetes,” shared Garima Dev Verman, a certified nutritionist and medical content analyst, The Healthy Indian Project (THIP).

Ideally, Velangi said that cold coffee without added sugar would be a good option to choose, along with decaffeinated coffee, about 1/4th teaspoon per cup. From a health point of view, it is better to stick to less than 2 cups per day, as moderation is a key to avoid any other health impact and reduce the risk of non communicable diseases and comorbidities.

“A better alternative is to have sugar-free cold coffee. However, meta analysis by Moon et al., 2021 indicated the long term caffeine consumption did not have a significant impact on insulin resistance and sensitivity. Caffeine intake causes rise in epinephrine hormone, blocks

Verman said that people with diabetes should avoid it entirely, while healthy individuals in their 30s or 50s should only have it at social events. “These packaged cold coffees should be better served as occasional treats rather than as everyday indulgence,” she added.

Velangi said that anyone consuming sugar based coffee would experience these spikes, especially if consumed in early mornings, dawn and late nights.

“Mostly people suffering from impaired glucose tolerance, prediabetes and diabetes are at more risk for such spikes,” she added.

According to Verman, people who are overweight, have diabetes, are prediabetic, young children, or elderly should not drink packaged cold coffee. Children and elderly people with vulnerable bodies who consume packaged cold coffee may experience negative reactions.

NYC Mayor Mistakenly Called India "Pakistan" in Independence Day Speech

NEW YORK, NY-It was a kind of a blunder that left audience members gasping. And it happened not once but thrice! Mayor Eric Adams of NYC, during his speech at the Indian Independence Day Event, in Queens he referred to India as Pakistan three times. The gaffe must have happened because just a day before the India Independence Day event, Mayor Adams had delivered a similar speech at the same venue on the occasion of Pakistan Independence Day. Mayor Adams said, “We raised the flag earlier this week at Bowling Green… And I think no greater symbol of what you offer to this community than the

I’ve known this community for so long, from little Pakistan in Queens, little Pakistan in Brooklyn, you are a major foundation of our entire city. So, let’s continue to celebrate your independence.”The error astonished the attendees as the stage and the surroundings were adorned with numerous Indian flags as he spoke from a stage with banners reading “Mayor Adams Celebrates the Indian Community.”

A notable attendee was Amar Kaur, a 106-year-old North Brunswick resident, who added a special touch to the celebration. The event, coordinated by Event Chair Naina Goel, featured music and DJ services by Hrushi Jadhav, with a variety of delicious food enhancing the festivities.

IACFNJ also awarded seven scholarships to high school students in South and North Brunswick in 2024, honoring the memory of members Murthy Yerramilli and Sunil Shah. Indian American Plaintiff Settles Sexual Harassment Lawsuit with Harvard

BOSTON, MA–Harvard University has settled a lawsuit involving allegations of sexual harassment and retaliation by former anthropology professor John Comaroff. Filed in February 2023 by graduate students Margaret Czerwienski, Lilia Kilburn, and Amulya Mandava, the lawsuit accused Comaroff of inappropriate behavior, including non-consensual kissing and groping, and threats to sabotage careers if reported. The students also claimed that Harvard failed to address their complaints, enabling the misconduct. On August 14, 2024, the plaintiffs voluntarily dismissed the lawsuit after months of mediation. The terms of the settlement are undisclosed.

Sanford Heisler Sharp, the law firm representing the women, praised their courage in bringing the issue to light. Comaroff, who retired earlier this year, has denied the allegations. Mandava, now Co-Director of South Bay Youth Changemakers and a fellow at the 2024 Silicon Valley New Leaders Council, holds advanced degrees from Harvard and is deeply involved in social justice work. She has contributed to research on inequality, particularly the castegender nexus, and has worked with the National Institutes of Health on bioethics.

California Cracks Down: New Laws Target Smash-and-Grab Robberies and Property Crimes

SACRAMENTO, CA- California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bipartisan package of 10 bills aimed at curbing smash-and-grab robberies and property crimes, focusing on repeat offenders and professional reselling operations. This legislative action is part of Democratic efforts to prove their toughness on crime while urging voters to reject Proposition 36, a ballot measure proposing harsher penalties for repeat shoplifters and drug offenders.

The rise in large-scale, smash-and-grab thefts, often captured on video and shared on social media, has highlighted the retail theft crisis in California. These crimes, where groups brazenly steal goods in plain sight, have drawn significant public concern. In response,

the new legislation allows prosecutors to combine thefts across different locations into a felony charge and increases penalties for large-scale reselling schemes.

Despite these efforts, Proposition 36, backed by district attorneys, businesses, and local officials, remains a contentious issue. Supporters argue it would address the rampant retail crime and drug abuse contributing to California’s broader crisis, including homelessness. However,

Woman Found Dead on O'Hare Baggage Belt Ruled Suicide

CHICAGO, IL-Authorities confirmed Friday that the 57-year-old woman

Virginia Christine Vinton of Waxhaw, North Carolina found entangled in a baggage conveyor belt at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport died by suicide.

Democrats, led by Newsom, fear it could lead to mass incarceration, particularly affecting low-income individuals and those with substance abuse issues.

The California Highway Patrol, which has recovered $45 million in stolen goods since 2019, supports the new laws. However, the lack of comprehensive data on retail crime complicates the issue, as store closures and security measures like locking everyday products behind plexiglass point to a growing problem. Crime rates, although lower than past decades, have seen a steady increase in shoplifting in major areas like San Francisco and Los Angeles. Newsom has pledged to fight Proposition 36, warning it could undo years of progressive criminal justice reforms.

NYC Street Vendors Rally for Fairer Manhattan Permits

NEW YORK, NY- Over 600 street vendors marched from Union Square to City Hall on Thursday, advocating for the passage of a “Street Vendor Reform” package aimed at simplifying the licensing process for vendors in New York City. The proposed legislation seeks to create a more regulated and enforceable system, offering vendors better access to business licenses, reducing criminal liability, and establishing a dedicated division within NYC’s Small Business Services to assist street vendors.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that the cause of death was asphyxiation due to hanging, following an autopsy.

Firefighters discovered the woman’s body around 7:45 a.m. on Thursday in a baggage room near a terminal that handles international flights, after responding to a 911 call.

Surveillance footage shows the woman entering the restricted area around 2:27 a.m. on Thursday, though the exact events leading to her death are not visible on camera.

Chicago police have declined to comment further, citing an ongoing investigation.

This package builds on Local Law 18, passed in 2021, which gradually increased mobile food vendor permits by 4,450 over ten years. However, vendors argue that the current system is flawed, often leading to arbitrary enforcement and harsh penalties. Mohamed Attia, Managing Director of the Street Vendor Project, emphasized the need for order and fairness, urging the City Council to act.

With nearly 20,000 street vendors operating in the city, officials suggest that passing the legislation could significantly boost revenue. Council Member Pierina Sanchez echoed

NYC Mayor Adams Considers Ban on Cell Phones in Schools

NEW YORK, NY- New York City officials are considering banning student cell phone use in schools, Mayor Eric Adams announced. Chancellor David C. Banks is currently working on the details, with an official announcement expected soon. Any policy changes, however, would not take effect this fall, according to the Department of Education. Concerns about the impact of social media on children are growing, with some experts likening it to tobacco in terms of harm. Chicago CBP Seizes Surge of Fake IDs as School Year Begin

CHICAGO, IL –-U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers have uncovered counterfeit driver’s licenses in inbound packages at O’Hare International Airport’s International Mail Facility. These counterfeit documents, produced outside the U.S., are often used by individuals under 21 to gain entry into bars or purchase alcohol. The fake IDs pose significant risks, not just legally but also in terms of safety, as they can contribute to underage drinking and its potential consequences, such as fatal accidents.

LaFonda D. Sutton-Burke, Director of Field Operations at the Chicago Field Office, emphasized that intercepting

these fake IDs helps prevent underage alcohol purchases and mitigates the risks associated with such actions. Since early August, Chicago CBP officers have seized 40 shipments containing 1,020 counterfeit U.S. driver’s licenses. These counterfeit IDs were identified due to inconsistencies in fine line detail and other document features. Sutton-Burke noted that the use of fake IDs has expanded beyond underage drinking, posing threats like identity theft, worksite enforcement issues, and even links to human trafficking and terrorism. CBP collaborates with various federal partners to combat the illicit use of fraudulent documents, ensuring the security of U.S. borders.

Consul General Somnath Ghosh unfurled the tricolour, followed by the singing of the National Anthem. He then delivered the President of India’s Address to the nation on the eve of Independence Day. CHICAGO, IL- Illinois’ first “DMV+” opened Thursday in Melrose Park, offering expanded services and shorter wait times. Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias highlighted that the DMV+ provides customers with various services without the need to travel to Chicago’s Loop or Springfield. At this revamped facility, customers can complete multiple DMV tasks and additional services at a single counter, thanks to the new “One-Stop-Shop” design. This innovation is expected to streamline processes, making it quicker and easier to renew licenses, obtain vehicle stickers, and handle other DMV-related tasks. Senate President Don Harmon emphasized the benefits for local businesses and customers alike. Melrose Park Mayor Ron Serpico Sr. praised the new design, noting that it will significantly reduce wait times for residents and those in nearby communities. The facility’s layout includes more service stations and seating, enhancing the overall customer experience.

The DMV+ also offers specialized services that were previously unavailable at any Illinois DMV location. These include in-person expedited business services, document filings, apostille certifications, and employment testing for prospective DMV employees. The addition of these services eliminates the need for customers to visit separate offices in Chicago or Springfield, saving time and streamlining various processes. On opening day, many residents took advantage of the new facility, applying for Real IDs, purchasing vehicle stickers, and filing business documents, all in a bright, spacious environment that received positive feedback from customers.
