Children who had suffered from lower respiratory tract infections, such as bronchitis, bronchiolitis, pneumonia and general chest infections, had a two- to four-fold increased risk of developing asthma in later life
LONDON: Young children with respiratory tract infections such as colds and pneumonia may be at an increased risk of developing asthma and weak lung function in later life, says a study. The study of 154,492 European children found that those who had upper respiratory infections, such as colds, sinusitis, laryngitis, tonsillitis, pharyngitis and otitis, by the age of five years had a 1.5-fold increased risk of developing asthma in later life. Children who had suffered from lower respiratory tract infections, such as bronchitis, bronchiolitis, pneumonia and general chest infections, had a two- to four-fold increased risk of developing asthma in later life and were also more likely to have worse lung function, according to the findings presented at the European Respiratory Society International Congress in Milan, Italy.

“These findings support the hypothesis that early-life respiratory tract infections may influence the development of respiratory illnesses in the longer term,” said Evelien van Meel from Erasmus MC University Medical Centre, The Netherlands. “In particular, lower respiratory tract infections in early life seem to have the greatest adverse effect on lung function and the risk of asthma,” van Meel said. The researchers analyzed data from 37 groups of children from several European countries who were born between 1989 and 2013. Children were included in this analysis if data were available on respiratory tract infections in early life (from age six months up to five years old), and childhood lung function and/or asthma. P
ercentage of US college students using marijuana was at the highest level in 2016 since the past three decades, according to a study conducted by University of Michigan researchers. The national Monitoring the Future follow-up study, funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, showed in 2016, 39 percent of full-time college students aged 19-22 indicated that they used marijuana at least once in 12 months, and 22 percent indicated that they used at least once in 30 days, reports Xinhua news agency. Both of these 2016 percentages
were the highest since 1987, and represented a steady increase since 2006, when they were 30 and 17 percent, respectively. Daily or near daily use of marijuana-defined as having used 20 or
more times in the prior 30 dayswas at 4.9 percent in 2016; this is among the highest levels seen in more than 30 years, though it has not shown any further rise in the past two years.

Teen’s soft-robotics device for disabled BY A STAFF WRITER OWELL, MS -- An innovative 16-yearold Indian American high school senior in Massachusetts, in response to his grandmother’s illness, has created a device to help provide her with some relief. Alekh Beri’s grandmother has diabetic neuropathy, a type of nerve damage in the extremities. Seeking to help her, he and his sister Serena designed and developed a prototype of a soft-robotics assistive device in his garage. The Westford Academy senior’s device could be used by patients as a type of individualized prosthetic, allowing them to grip objects despite their disability. The teen has devoted more than 18 months, having produced upwards of eight prototypes. And earlier this summer, Beri filed a provisional patent, which he hopes will be finalized by next year. Essentially, Beri’s device would use a silicon rubber base that molds to a patient’s hand. Early iterations of the prosthetic are activated with air pressure, allowing the rubber to move and grab onto surfaces. “I wanted to be able to help these people and basically give them an extra hand they can

use,” he says. “There’s a lot of people who suffer from (diabetic neuropathy) and don’t get the treatment they need.” His work was showcased in the Southern
New England Junior Science and Humanities Symposium competition earlier this year, and was selected as one of the 10 projects for the symposium’s national competition.
More immigrants face deportation BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC – The Trump administration may now focus on other categories of immigrants after eliminating the DACA program. The next in the line of fire is perhaps the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) beneficiaries. This immigration law provision permits the administration to give temporary work authorization and safety from deportation to undocumented immigrants from some countries who are unable to return safely to their countries. A country may get a TPS status for temporary conditions such as armed conflict, environmental disaster or an epidemic, and other extraordinary and temporary conditions. Though the status is temporary, the beneficiaries end up living in the country for decades as the crisis back home continued in some cases. “In the next six months, the Trump

administration will weigh whether to extend the status for several countries whose immigrants have lived in the US for as long as 20 years—with a decision to end that status potentially upending their lives. More than 440,000 people in the US are protected by the program, it is learnt.
Although India is no longer the designated country for TPS, its neighbor Nepal is. There have been instances in the past where individuals from India have taken the route from Nepal to stay in the US. Apart from Nepal, other countries benefiting from the law include El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. In May, when the former Secretary of Homeland Security John Kelly extended the TPS by six months for eligible nationals of Haiti, he told them to prepare to go back to their home countries. “During this six-month extension, beneficiaries are encouraged to prepare for their return to Haiti in the event Haiti’s designation is not extended again, including requesting updated travel documents from the government of Haiti,” Kelly said. This warning, however, may be a hint for other benefitting countries, too, that the provision might not be continued under the current administration.
BY A STAFF WRITER REMONT, CA — A group of high school students from various parts of the San Francisco Bay Area are trying to make a difference in the lives of children belonging to low-income families, one kid at a time. The young volunteers conducted a dental health awareness camp at the Kidango Linda Vista Center in San Jose on July 14. The initiative is the brainchild of Amreen Sunil, an Indian American senior at Mission San Jose High School here. As the founder of Aid4Kids, which seeks to improve the lives of underprivileged children through education and health services, Sunil has conducted multiple events like this across the Bay Area. At the event, the enthusiastic team members made a presentation highlighting the importance of dental health and the different ways children can maintain good hygiene. The team also read stories on dental hygiene to children of various age groups at the center. Esha Desai, the event coordinator for Aid4Kids, distributed free health and hygiene kits to the children. And not just in the Bay Area, the teenagers are trying to help disadvantaged kids in other countries as well, including India.

Democrats, Trump agree on deal to protect ‘Dreamers’ The DACA, which protect some 800,000 people including Indians in the US, also provide temporary permits for work and study IANS, WASHINGTON
T
op US Democratic leaders have announced that they have reached agreement with President Donald Trump to pursue a legislative deal that would protect hundreds of thousands of young undocumented immigrants from deportation. The agreement was announced in a joint statement by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer following a dinner with the President at the White House this week. The pair said that they also agreed to work on a border security package that would exclude Trump’s proposed wall with Mexico, the Washington Post reported. Trump announced on September 4 that he would cancel the scheme, while giving Congress six months to enact a replacement plan for DACA recipients. Following talks, Schumer and Pelosi said they had “a very productive meeting at the White House with the President”. The discussion focused on DACA. “We agreed to enshrine the protections of DACA into law quickly, and to work out a package of border security, excluding the wall, that’s acceptable to both sides.” In a letter to her Democratic colleagues in the House, Pelosi said she hoped the deal could be done “in a matter of weeks”. Democrats have repeatedly said they will block any legislation that contains funding for the border wall — Trump’s key campaign pledge.
BRIEFS New Communications Director for Trump WASHINGTON: Hope Hicks, one of President Donald Trump’s longest serving advisers working in the White House, has been formally named as the new Communications Director. Hicks, the third person to hold the position in nearly eight months, had been acting in the role since her predecessor Anthony Scaramucci, the colorful and controversial Trump aide, was booted out in July, the New York Times reported.
Facebook, Twitter may testify SAN FRANCISCO: Amid reports that Russia-based organisations purchased ads on Facebook before the 2016 US presidential poll, a Senate Committee is considering inviting Facebook and Twitter to testify on misinformation spread on their platforms. The calls for the social media platform’s representatives to appear before the Congress came from Senator Mark Warner, ReCode reported on Tuesday. — IANS

When asked if believes there was collusion by Trump associates, Clinton said: “I’m convinced of it... I happen to believe in the rule of law and believe in evidence, so I’m not going to go off and make all kinds of outrageous claims”. “But if you look at what we’ve learned since (the election), it’s pretty troubling.” Regarding her loss to Trump, the former First Lady said: “I’ll always feel terrible that it happened, that I couldn’t figure out how to counter all of the stuff that was coming at me in good enough, fast enough real time.”
Trump commemorates 16th anniversary of 9/11 attacks IANS, WASHINGTON
U
S President Donald Trump led a moment of silence in a brief, sombre ceremony at the White House on Monday to mark the 16th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. Trump and First Lady Melania Trump walked onto the South Lawn and stood as bells tolled for the first 9/11 anniversary of Trump’s presidency. They then
bowed their heads and stood silently before placing their hands on their hearts as a bugler played “Taps.” Thousands were gathering nationwide to mark the deadliest attack on US soil. Trump and the First Lady later attended a memorial ceremony at the Pentagon, the Washington Post reported. Defence Secretary James Mattis and General Joseph Dunford, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, hosted a private ceremony at the Pentagon for rel-
atives of the victims. Nearly 3,000 people died after hijackers crashed planes into New York’s World Trade Centre, the Pentagon and a rural Pennsylvania field in 2001. The attacks were directed by Al Qeada leader Osama bin Laden. The White House commemoration took place at the same time relatives of 9/11 victims, survivors, rescuers and others gathered at New York’s 9/11 memorial on Monday at 08.46 (local time) to mark the exact time the first
plane struck the World Trade Centre’s North Tower. The names of those killed were being read aloud at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum as bells rang out in memory of the dead. Vice President Mike Pence travelled to Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where one of the four hijacked jetliners crashed after passengers overpowered the hijackers. He is scheduled to speak later at the rural site of the crash. He and his wife will tour the Flight 93 National Memorial nearby.

T
he fast-growing IndiaJapan ties got a major fillip as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe on Thursday laid the foundation stone here for India’s first bullet train project based on Japan’s Shinkansen super speed train technology. The ambitious Rs 1.08 lakh crore ($17 billion) 508-km AhmedabadMumbai line adds to the growing list of major India-Japan infrastructure cooperation projects. Speaking at the event, Modi said the bullet train project would add pace to the country’s development, and would also help in empowerment of the poor. Modi said that no country can grow if they don’t dream big. “To grow one needs to expand his dreams and decide his strength to achieve that.” “It’s new India which has to fly high,” the Prime Minister said. “Bullet train is a project that will provide pace to development. Along with new technology it will also bring results faster.” In his remarks, Abe said “a strong India is in Japan’s interest, and a strong Japan is in India’s interest. Today, on this day, that part of the bright future is seen in solid form.” He said that Japan’s Shinkansen Technology, which will power India’s bullet train project, has

changed his country’s economy, society and people’s lives. Abe expressed the hope that he will soon enjoy the beautiful green scenery of India through the windows of bullet train “when I come back here in a few years”. Modi said that with the foundation laying of the project India has fulfilled its very old dream. “Bullet train will bring employment as well as speed. The Bullet train project is human friendly and eco friendly.” Modi also expressed gratitude to Japan for providing technology and

SC tells Jaypee to deposit Rs 20 bn NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday directed Jaypee Associates to deposit Rs 20 billion with its registrar in pursuance of the ongoing insolvency proceedings against its sister concern Jaypee Infratech. A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice A.M. Khanwilkar and Justice D.Y. Chandrachud directed that the amount should be deposited
by October 27. Putting the matter up for next hearing on November 13, the bench said in case Jaypee Associates intended to sell any of its assets to raise the money, it would require prior permission from the court. financial assistance of Rs 880 billion at 0.1 per cent interest. He emphasised that the Bullet train is in a way a big gift from Japan to India. “It is in a way a project being constructed for free. And I will once again thank Japan for helping India with technological and economical support,” Modi said. Highlighting the benefits of the bullet train, Modi said “A new economic system will also develop on this route (Ahmedabad-Mumbai). The entire area between the two cities will change into a single eco-
nomic zone. A high speed corridor will also help develop India and give speed to economic progress.” The high speed rail project that is scheduled to be completed by 2022, has been financed by Japan. Of the 508 km stretch, 92 percent (468 km) of the route will be elevated, six percent (27 km) in tunnels and the remaining two per cent (13 km) will be on the ground According to Railway Ministry officials, the operating speed of the bullet train would be 320 kmph and the maximum speed would be 350 kmph.
NEW DELHI: Questioning the economic viability of the AhmedabadMumbai bullet train project, the Congress on Thursday said the foundation stone laying ceremony was timed ahead of the Gujarat elections, primarily to push projects just before the polls. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe on Thursday laid the foundation stone for India’s first 508-km high-speed rail project in Ahmedabad. Instead of giving priority to safety measures in the railways, the Prime Minister was laying the foundation stone for the bullet train in Ahmedabad and not in Mumbai keeping in mind the upcoming assembly elections in the state, it said. The party also said it was done to “mislead the people”. Congress leader in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge said his party was not against any development project, “but the Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train project is not economically viable”. “The air fare for Mumbai to Ahmedabad is Rs 2,000, and the bullet train fare would be between Rs 2,800 and Rs 5,000,,” said Kharge. —IANS
Rahul targets Modi’s economic policies, ‘divisive’ politics IANS, BERKELEY

ongress Vice President Rahul Gandhi came down heavily on the Modi government’s economic policies and also accused it of promoting divisive politics, and said that lynchings and attacks on liberals were badly damaging India’s image. Speaking to students at the University of California here, Gandhi defended dynasty politics, saying that was how the entire country was running, and also said he was “absolutely ready” to be the party’s prime ministerial candidate for the 2019 general elections. The BJP hit back at Gandhi by terming him a “failed dynast” for his justification of dynasty politics and reminded him that the top three constitutional posts in the

ers, global thinkers and overseas Indians. He was speaking to students at the University of California here where his great-grandfather Jawaharlal Nehru delivered his speech in 1949. He targeted the Modi government while speaking on ‘India at 70: Reflections on the Path Forward’ on Monday night and termed the demonetization decision a “self-inflicted wound”. He said the decision to scrap Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes on November 8 last year and the “hastily implemented” Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime caused “tremendous damage” to the Indian economy. “The decline in economic growth today is worrying and it’s leading to an upsurge of anger in the country,” he added.

BRICS crafts new diplomacy BRICS diplomacy, including its well thought and carefully drafted declaration of 71 articles showed not only the mature intentions of five countries, but the skillful subtlety of India and China too RAJENDRA SHENDE, NEW DELHI
T
he BRICS meeting in Xiamen in China last week was a timely opportunity for both India and China to end the highaltitude and potentially high-voltage stand-off at the Doklam plateau. Many political observers around the globe feared a spark, ignition and even a war. Concurrent “cross-continent” threats by North Korea aimed at the US brought the situation to the brink. BRICS diplomacy, including its extremely well thought-out and carefully drafted declaration of 71 articles showed not only the mature intentions of five countries — Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa — in the messy world, but the skillful subtlety of India and China in avoiding a flash war in the Himalayas. Having disengaged from the Doklam plateau, China and India should now engage in availing themselves the huge opportunity of constructive and positive collaboration on Sustainable Development and Climate Change. There are three key reasons that offer higher takeoff points for Xi and Modi to engage in a strategy that benefits people of both the countries. First, both of them have shown similar approaches to address the common challenges facing them

on international platforms. Unprecedented air pollution, lifethreatening climate change, resource-draining energy dependence, restless youth, serious unemployment, fast-urbanizing population, the eroding agricultural base and terrorism are the common challenges that the two largest- and fastest-growing countries have to face squarely. In the UN General Assembly, President Xi in September 2015 talked of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): “The dream of the Chinese people is closely con-
nected with the dreams of other peoples of the world. We cannot realize the Chinese dream without a peaceful international environment, a stable international order and the understanding, support and help from the rest of the world. The realization of the Chinese dream will bring more opportunities to other countries and contribute to global peace and development.” At the same forum, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid out India’s philosophy of “vasudhav kutumbakam” — the world as one big family — and noted that the
country has always raised its voice for rights of justice, dignity, opportunity and prosperity not just for itself but for others. He went further to state that development of India’s people “mirrors” the SDGs. Second, the personal chemistry between Modi and Xi is perceived to be conducive for longer-term cooperation. They come from totally different family and education backgrounds. But their visits to each other’s home states early on when Modi’s government came to power had set a harmonious tone. The BRICS Summit was signifi-

W
ith about 7,000 children trafficked in India every year, child rights activist and Nobel Peace laureate Kailash Satyarthi, who set out on a Kanyakumari-Delhi “Bharat Yatra”, to focus attention on the issue, hopes that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government will bring in stringent legislation to curb the menace. Satyarthi said he had spoken to prime ministers in the past but no one took the issue seriously like Modi did, though the Prime Minister had not given him a specific deadline by when Parliament would pass the proposed legislation against child trafficking. “It is the first time a Prime Min-
ister has taken it up,” Satyarthi told IANS in an interview before he left for Kanyakumari, adding that he was hoping that Modi would prioritize the legislation. The 63-year-old Satyarthi, who heads the Bachpan Bachao Aandolan (Save The Childhood Movement), said the Prime Minister had personally written to him, assuring that “since the government is in power in both the houses (of Parliament)” something can be done about the legislation. “I can’t recall any other Prime Minister writing anything about trafficking, like Modi had done,” he said referring to the letter. A Trafficking of Persons (Prevention, Protection and Rehabilitation) Bill 2016, drafted by Ministry of Women and Child
Development, aims to create a strong legal, economic and social environment against trafficking. The draft bill envisages creation of a fund for rehabilitation of victims of trafficking. The proposed bill seeks to establish special courts in each district of the country and special prosecutors to fast-track the trials and increase prosecution. The draft bill is currently awaiting an approval from the cabinet, after which it will be tabled in the parliament and referred to a select committee before being taken up for debate and passing. This process could take up to a year, if not more.
cant and, politically, simply amazing. Even when the Indian and Chinese battalions were facing each other on the Doklam plateau, Modi and Xi were facing each other in Hamburg on the margins of G-20 summit to discuss preparations for Xiamen. Both showered praise on each other’s national efforts in economic and social development and resolved to address the issue of terrorism. Third, both countries have already collaborated smartly to institutionalize efforts on critical issues like clean energy, sustainable development, infrastructure and finance. Apart from their skilled strategies to leverage the BRICS platform — which is neither regional, nor economic and represents 40 per cent of world population and 25 per cent of world’s GDP — there are two more excellent enabling initiatives of China, fully supported by India as major shareholder, i.e., the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) in Beijing and New Development Bank (NDB) in Shanghai, with a capital of $100 billion each. With these three enabling ecosystems, India and China can take global positioning though strategic collaboration. Collaborative innovations in reducing carbon emissions through clean energy and implementing the Paris Climate Agreement and SDGs can prove to be the most rewarding strategy for both. Kailash Satyarthi said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had personally written to him assuring that "since the government is in power something can be done about Trafficking of Persons Bill 2016.

Shah appointed to key position in White House Trump has appointed Raj Shah as his principal Deputy Press Secretary in an on-going shake-up ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK
U
S President Donald Trump has appointed Raj Shah as his principal Deputy Press Secretary in an on-going shake-up of the chaotic White House communications operations. Trump announced on September 13 evening he was moving Shah, who was the Deputy Communications Director, to the new position. He will also retain his position as a deputy assistant to the President. Shah’s new role was part of a major revamp of the press and communications operations, which has seen a parade of communications staffers come and go during the almost eight months Twitter-trigger-happy Trump has been on the job. Simultaneously, Trump also announced that he was confirming Hope Hicks permanently as the Communications Director. She was acting in the position since Anthony Scaramucci left the job under a cloud after only ten days last month. An expert in strategic communi-
Indian American Congressman gets key role in Democrats’ task force WASHINGTON: Indian American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi has been appointed to a leadership role in the Democratic Party’s new task force on the economy focussing on creating more jobs for Americans. The Congressman will serve as co-chair for the New Economy Task Force, along with Representatives Susan DelBene, Debbie Dingell and Darren Soto. “I’m honored to take a leading role in crafting our jobfocused agenda for the new economy,” said Krishnamoorthi. “Fundamentally, building the economy of the future means ensuring that out

On the New Economy Task Force, I look forward to working with my colleagues to accomplish both these goals,” he said. With a rapidly changing economy and new challenges facing American workers, the task force will take a forward-leaning approach to job growth, looking at rapidly advancing technology, artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, and ensuring workers are trained for the jobs of tomorrow, he added.

Staff. That Shah is not only being kept on at the White House but also move to a key job after Priebus left is a measure of his recognition by both Trump and John Kelly who succeeded Priebus. With his off-the-cuff remarks and Tweets, Trump has created controversies and contradictions that his communications staff struggle to explain, even as White House staffers feuded in private and in public muddling the presidential message. Another predecessor of Hicks, Michael Dubke lasted less than three months on the job. Press Secretary Sean Spicer, who was pilloried by the media in his
difficult position as the spokesperson for the mercurial and outspoken Trump, left after only six months on the job. He also held the Communications Director job intermittently. Shah will be working with Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who succeeded Spicer. Steve Bannon, who was White House chief strategist and had a major role in the president’s communications operations, left his job last month. Kelly, a retired Marine general, is widely believed to be behind departures of Bannon and Scaramucci in his mandate to bring order to the White House since his appointment in July.

Banga exited the Noble Group, in which he was a co-founder in 1988, just before it started crumbling on the business front. Setting up the Caravel Group in 2013 with an $800 million investment, Banga was soon back in the big
league of Hong Kong billionaires early this year. “We have three verticals within the Caravel Group. The first one is Asset Management. It is purely investing in liquid assets in equity, fixed income and debt investment and some private equity investment. The other part is brick and mortar business in Caravel International which has got two verticals. One is Caravel Resources under which we do the commodities business. Then we have Caravel Maritime and Caravel Fleet Management Limited. “Today we are the third largest ship management company in the world. We have 450 ships under our management, close to $20 billion dollars of assets. Total officers and crew are about 18,000 — the majority of them from India,” he explained. With operations spread in 19 countries across most continents, Banga says that doing business with China is easier.

The Kim Jong-un regime responded with strong words to the new sanctions passed on Monday in the UN Security Council and said it will increase its military capabilities, reports Efe news agency. In a statement published by the state news agency KCNA, the North Korean Foreign Ministry said the sanctions were “aimed at depriving the DPRK of its legitimate right for self-defense and completely suffocating its state and people through full-scale economic blockade”. necessary to establish a “practical equilibrium” with the US to maintain peace and security in the region. The sanctions are less drastic than what was initially intended by the US, which also called for a ban on UN member countries selling gas, oil and refined petroleum products to North Korea. Russia and China, who have veto powers, opposed certain conditions in the draft resolutions, opening a new round of negotiations which concluded with a decision to soften the measure to curtailing crude oil sales to the country rather than prohibiting them completely. US President Donald Trump said “we think it’s just another very small step (...) but the sanctions are nothing compared to what ultimately will have to happen”. Trump has not ruled out an attack on North Korea and said he is considering suspension of US trade with all countries that do business with Pyongyang. Asserting that a proper trial was needed for the lawmaker’s disqualification, Haris argued that if just his election was termed void then Sharif would only have been barred for one term. Justice Ejaz remarked that Sharif did not declare a salary account and added that documents submitted in the court state that he received a salary in his FZE Capital account in August 2013. The relevant record in this regard was present in the JIT’s Volume IX. Terming the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) report incomplete, Harris said that most of the documents were received from sources and had faults in them.
Myanmar situation ‘textbook example of ethnic cleansing’ IANS, UNITED NATIONS
T
he security operation targeting Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar “seems a textbook example of ethnic cleansing”, the UN human rights chief Zeid Raad Al Hussein has said, urging the country to end the “cruel military operation” in its Rakhine state. More than 300,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled to Bangladesh since violence erupted there late last month. The military says it is responding to attacks by Rohingya militants and denies targeting civilians, BBC reported on Monday. The violence began on August 25 when Rohingya militants attacked police posts in northern Rakhine, killing 12 security personnel.

Rohingyas who have fled Myanmar since then say the military responded with a brutal campaign, burning villages and attacking civil-
ians in a bid to drive them out. Rakhine, the poorest region in Myanmar, is home to more than a million Rohingyas. They have faced
decades of persecution in Buddhistmajority Myanmar, where they are not considered citizens. Hussein, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, said the current operation in Rakhine was “clearly disproportionate”. “We have received multiple reports and satellite imagery of security forces and local militia burning Rohingya villages, and consistent accounts of extrajudicial killings, including shooting fleeing civilians,” he said. “I call on the government to end its current cruel military operation, with accountability for all violations that have occurred and to reverse the pattern of severe and widespread discrimination against the Rohingya population,” he said.

That proves that the United States and Los Angeles in Southern California in particular feel very much part of Olympic and Paralympic movement that other countries around the world show respect for and enthusiasm for,” Sykes told Xinhua news agency. “As a three-time Olympics host, we intend to make sure that all of the participants feel that they are welcome and have a great experience with us,” he added. in Peru. “The Olympics and Paralympics are very popular in Los Angeles. Deliberately we had the Games in 1932, and 1984 as well. And We are looking forward now to the 2028 Olympic Games,” said Sykes. Public support for hosting
the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles is overwhelming, even if it means waiting for eleven years, according to a survey conducted in July by Loyola Marymount University (LMU) in Los Angeles, California. Some 83 per-

Sykes noted that there is tremendous Olympic enthusiasm in the second largest city of the United States. “Because of the experience this community had in 1932 and 1984, expectation of people here are very high,” he said. “The organizers have always said our community can bring things to the Olympic movement that other cities may not bring.” Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti pledged to IOC that Los Angeles would “illuminate the future” of the Olympic and Paralympic Movements in July. Los Angeles promised to deliver a low-cost model for the Olympic Games and would make LA 2028 one of the greenest Games in history. “We have all the sports infrastructures we need already. We don’ t need to build anything new. We can host the Games with less stress and lower cost,” said Sykes, who has a long background in conservation and environmental stewardship.

Virat better limited over batsman than Smith: Clarke NEW DELHI: Former Australia cricketer Michael Clarke said this week that India skipper Virat Kohli is a better batsman than Steve Smith in the Twenty20 International (T20I) and One-Day International formats. Smith and Kohli will lead their respective sides in a five-match ODI series, which will be followed by three T20Is scheduled from September 17 to October 13. Kohli averages 55.76 in ODIs and 53.82 in T20Is, while Smith has recorded an average of 44.26 in ODIs and 21.55 in the shortest format of the game. “Virat is a better limited over batsman, only just; Steve Smith is a better Test batsman, in my opinion. About their captaincy I can’t say.
Two young captains, two very good players,” the 36-year-old told reporters during a panel discussion ahead of Australia’s limited overs tour of India. Australia registered a 1-1 draw in the recently-concluded Test series in Bangladesh. Clarke feels that despite the disappointing result — which included their first-ever Test defeat to Bangladesh — the current Australian team has plenty of potential to play better cricket. “I think this Australian team has huge potential, I think it’s now time to turn that potential into consistent performance. We have got matchwinning players, there are enough talented players to beat any team in the world,” Clarke contended.
017 has been a spectacular year for Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal, who has just added the US Open to the French Open he won earlier in the year and returned to number one in the World rankings at a time when many thought the 31-year-old’s career had started to decline. Speaking to the El Pais newspaper on Tuesday, Nadal stressed that
for all of his titles, he is a normal person, reports Xinhua news agency. “When I’m at home I lead a normal life... I’m just like any other person, like any of my friends,” he said, saying his ‘normality’ was vital. “That is what matters the most to me, much more than achievements in sport. Dhoni was in top form in Sri Lanka, having scored 162 runs with a strike-rate of 82.23. The former India skipper, who played his 300th One-Day International (ODI) in Sri Lanka, also grabbed eye balls with his quick reflexes behind the wicket, becoming the
first wicket-keeper in ODI history to effect 100 stumpings. Shastri asserted that Dhoni has both fitness and current form on his side and that the team will need
him in the next ODI World Cup in 2019. Shastri compared Dhoni with the likes of Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar and Kapil Dev and said his achievements need to be respected. “Where else will you find a legend like M.S. Dhoni? Dhoni is in the same league as Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar or Kapil Dev. We have to respect his achievements,” Shastri told India TV on September 13. Shastri, who took over as India coach in July this year, lauded Dhoni’s performance in Sri Lanka and said that there’s still a lot to come from him.

Oh dear! Priyanka so ignorant about Sikkim
Actor says Sikkim is very ‘troubled with insurgency,’ netizens slam her IANS, TORONTO
B
ollywood actress Priyanka Chopra, who has produced a Sikkimese film Pahuna, has ruffled feathers in the hilly state by calling it an insurgency-troubled land. Netizens have slammed her for ignorance and for being “politically illiterate”. The National Award winning actress spoke about Sikkim in an interview to ET Canada at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) while discussing her production Pahuna: The Little Visitors, which premiered at the gala. “This is a Sikkimese film. Sikkim is a small state in the Northeast of India which never had a film industry or anyone who made films from there. And this is the first film ever that’s come out of that region because it’s very troubled with insurgency and troubling situations,” Priyanka said in the interview. The remark was immediately slammed. “Sikkim is one of the most peaceful states, dear Priyanka. We don’t have any insurgency here. Please comment responsibly,”

Earlier, we have witnessed that many celebs don’t know the name of the President of India, so don’t
expect them to be politically correct.” Biswatosh Sinha, a scriptwriter from Assam, wrote: “Dear Priyanka Chopra, Sikkim is a peaceful place and #Pahuna is not the first film from the region. Plz get the facts right about Northeast.” Incidentally, Priyanka is the tourism ambassador of Assam, one of the sister states in Northeast
India. Pahuna..., directed by first timer Paakhi A. Earn people’s respect: Rishi ‘Lucknow Central’: Outstanding Kapoor tells Rahul Gandhi study Of imprisonment and freedom
L MUMBAI: Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi’s idea of citing Bollywood as an example while discussing ‘dynasty politics’ in India during his Berkeley speech, has irked veteran actor Rishi Kapoor. Rishi, who is known for his strong views and opinions, tweeted: “Rahul Gandhi. In the 106 years of Indian cinema of India, Kapoor’s contribution is 90 years. And each generation is chosen by public on merit.” “By God’s grace we are in 4 generations. Prithviraj Kapoor. Raj Kapoor. Randhir Kapoor. Ranbir Kapoor - Males. Besides all others. You see otherwise.
So don’t bullshit people on ‘Dynasty’. You have to earn people’s respect and love through hard work, not zabardasti and gundagardi,” he added. In his speech, Rahul Gandhi mentioned Abhishek Bachchan — son of megastar Amitabh Bachchan — while making a statement on how “most of India runs on dynasty politics”. Last year, Rishi had also addressed the Congress and its members in his tweets, suggesting that roads and buildings named by the Congress after members of the Gandhi family be renamed. —IANS
ucknow Central is by far the most engaging thinkingman’s thriller of the year. Ballsy and brave, it penetrates the politics of prison life without relinquishing the right to engage us in a solid storytelling spree where a clever cat-and-mouse game is played out between a sadistic jailor(Ronit Roy, in top form) and a non-guilty prisoner(Farhan Akhtar) who is hellbent on getting his liberty at any cost. The smartly thoughtfully written script (by Ranjit Tiwari, Aseem Arora) delves into the dynamics of freedom and comes up with a super-chic musical with wings that often allow vivid characters to fly higher than prison dramas generally do in India.Undoubtedly Lucknow Central is a prison-break drama on a par with Franklin Schaffener’s 1973 classic Papillon and certainly superior in its intellectual political and spiritual ramifications to the overrated Shawshank Redemption. Redemption in “Lucknow Central” is a scarce commodity. This, its

For a debutant he shows scant regard for commercial trappings. When was the last time we saw a prison drama without an item song? Or a film about injustice where the hero doesn’t get to raise his voice or lower his fists on cor-
rupt jaws? Farhan Akhar’s Kishen is so soft-hearted and kind , we wonder how he will survive in prison for a crime he never committed. Early on there is heart-stopping sequence of prison violence where Kishen is offered ‘protection’ by an imposing goon(Manav Vij, wordlessly sinister).Farhan plays Kishen as a dreamer-musician coping with a crisis beyond his comprehension or endurance but determined to slum it out even if it means breaking some laws. This is his bravest most soul-baring performance to date. Scenes of his breakdown in solitary confinement will remain with us long after the last episode of Prison Break is over.

uperstar Dileep whose previous three bail applications were turned down, submitted his fourth bail plea this week at a trial court here. The Angamaly Magistrate court posted the plea to be heard later this week. Following his arrest on July 10 for his involvement in the conspiracy that led to the abduction and molestation of a Malayalam actress in February, Dileep has been lodged in the Aluva sub-jail. On July 15, the same court which will consider his fresh bail plea, turned down his bail for the first time and since then the Ker-
ala high court too turned it down on two occasions. Earlier, a trial court intervened after the police approached it with a complaint stating that several celebrities have been visiting super-
star Dileep over the last few days and this could affect the probe. There has been a clampdown on the visitors since last week as several film personalities, including witnesses in this case, have been visiting Dileep after September 2. Actor-turned legislator and former minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar’s visit irked the probe team. According to the probe team, these were tactics used by those supporting Dileep to evoke sympathy as an earlier attempt failed to get the desired results. The actor was granted a twohour break from jail on September 2 to perform the rituals on his father’s death anniversary at his residence.

AIADMK ousts Sasikala, Dinakaran Party General Council altered the party’s organisational structure to a collective leadership structure; none will be elected or nominated to the post of General Secretary IANS, CHENNAI
T
he ruling AIADMK’s General Council this week annulled the appointment of V.K. Sasikala as the party’s General Secretary and also struck down the appointments made by her before going to jail, including making her nephew T.T.V. Dinakaran the party Deputy General Secretary. In other major decisions, the General Council altered the party’s organisational structure to a collective leadership structure. It amended the party rules whereby none will be elected or nominated to the post of General Secretary — a position held by party supremo and late Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa till her death. The General Council also decided that party Coordinator (now held by Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam) and Joint Coordinator (held by Chief Minister K. Palaniswami) will oversee the party affairs. The General Council also introduced a rule whereby the party’s Coordinator and Joint Coordinator would be elected by the General Council, and they would hold the post for five years. With the annulment of the appointment of Dinakaran as Deputy General Secretary, the appointments made by him are also struck down.
HC rejects Ryan trustees’ bail plea MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court has dismissed the anticipatory transit bail plea of the trustees of Ryan International Schools but granted a conditional interim stay on their arrest till 5 p.m. The trustees — Augustine F. Pinto, his wife Grace and their son Ryan — have been ordered by Justice A.S. Gadkari to deposit their passports with the Mumbai police, failing which the interim protection would not be given. The interim protection against arrest has been granted to the trustees to enable them to approach an appropriate judicial authority in Haryana in the case pertaining to the murder of a seven-year-old student, Pradhyuman B. Thakur, in Ryan International School in Gurugram. Fearing arrest by Haryana Police, the Pintos — who are trustees of St. Xaviers Education Trust — had filed anticipatory transit bail application before the Bombay High Court. — IANS
V.K. Sasikala
Sasikala was appointed interim General Secretary last December following the death of party supremo and Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa. Sasikala had appointed Dinakaran as Deputy General Secretary before going to jail. The council also ratified the recent merger of the two factions led by Palaniswami and Panneerselvam. One of the basic demands of Panneerselvam camp for the merger with Palaniswami was the dismissal of Sasikala and her family members from the party.
T.T.V. Dinakaran
Party officials said the power to admit or dismiss a member rests with the party General Secretary. This power has been now transferred to party Coordinator and Joint Coordinator following the amendments to the rules. Party officials said the dismissal of Sasikala and her family from the party may happen now - under the new organisational structure. The General Council also resolved to restore all those who were party office bearers appointed by Jayalalithaa. They will continue to hold office now, it said.
A total of 14 resolutions including the ones hailing the merger of two factions; the government for celebrating the birth centenary of late Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran and AIADMK Founder; the decision of the government to build a memorial for Jayalalithaa and others were passed at the General Council meeting that was attended by around 2,140 members. Loyalists of Dinakaran, including law makers and members of General Council, boycotted the meeting.
Reacting to the General Council resolutions Dinakaran said the Madras High Court has said the decisions of the meeting are subject to its final judgement in a case filed against the holding of the meeting. Dinakaran, who is leading 21 party legislators, said he would work towards bringing down the K. Palaniswami government. “You (Chief Minister Palaniswami) and others have no moral right to sit in positions of power that was once wielded by Jayalalithaa. We will send this government home,” Dinakaran told a press conference later. Citing the resolution that states that the party members cannot visualise anybody else as General Secretary other than the late Jayalalithaa, he wondered whether the same logic would also apply to the Chief Minister’s post? “As per the party rules, the General Secretary will be elected by the primary members of the party if there is an election. The amendment by the ruling faction has effectively taken away the only right of the 1.5 crore members,” C.R. Saraswathi, spokesperson of Dinakaran faction, told IANS. As per AIADMK constitution, the party General Secretary is elected directly by the primary members. The party has around 1.5 crore members.

Addressing the gathering, Patkar questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence on the killing. “Why is the Prime Minister of the country silent on Gauri Lankesh killing even after a week?” she asked.
Sainath said: “The killings aren’t over. There will be more, unless we stop them. What we’re up against is the largest machine of hate.” Protesting journalists, activists and thinkers came out with a list of demands/decisions pertinent to Lankesh’s killing through a statement. “The inquiry which is underway through the SIT formed by the state government should hasten and
complete its enquiry and identify the powers behind the murder,” said the statement. “We are all witness to how several organisations and individuals affiliated to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Hindu Jagarana Vedike, Vishva Hindu Parishad et al have been celebrating Gauri Lankesh’s murder,” the protesters said. “We at the resistance meeting condemn this inhuman behaviour, which is not supported by any religious teachings. “Gauri Lankesh was murdered only to silence the voice of humanity and democratic struggles that she represented,” the statement said. “Those of us here would like to tell her murderers loud and clear: ‘I am Gauri, we are all Gauri’,” it added. Wearing black head bands that read “I am Gauri”, the protesters took out the march from the city railway station to the Central College Grounds. Those protesting were seen singing protest songs, raising slogans like “Gauri Lankesh Amar Rahe” (Long live Gauri Lankesh) and demanding that Lankesh’s assailants be brought to book.

Pneumonia in early life ups asthma risk: Study

The length of follow-up varied between groups, but ranged from birth until the age of four to 15 years.
others who take the recommended amounts of folic acid during pregnancy might reduce the risk of their children developing pesticide-related autism, researchers say. The findings showed that if the mother was taking folic acid during the window around conception, the risk associated with pesticides seemed to be attenuated. “Folic acid intake below the median and exposure to pesticides was associated with higher risk of autism than either low intake or
exposure alone,” said lead author Rebecca J. Schmidt, Assistant Professor at the University of California-Davis. Folate plays a critical role in DNA methylation — a process by which genes are turned off or on, and in DNA repair and synthesis.

Mahant Swami Maharaj meets with Obama BY A STAFF WRITER A S H I N G TO N , D C - His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj recently met with former President Barack Obama in Washington D.C. The meeting was arranged as part of Mahant Swami Maharaj’s efforts in North America to share universal Hindu messages and foster public dialogue on service and the importance of unity among communities in the US and also India. Joining Mahant Swami and Obama were Pujya Ishwarcharandas Swami and Pujya Viratswarupdas Swami from BAPS as well as Ben Rhodes from the Obama Foundation. Mahant Swami presented Obama with a garland as part of a traditional Hindu greeting, as well as an Amrut Kalash symbolizing ultimate victory of good over evil even in difficult times. Mahant Swami also gifted Obama a sanctified mala (Hindu prayer beads) and a copy of Transcendence, a book written by former Indian President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam about his spiritual experiences with Pramukh Swami Maharaj. The two leaders discussed the role of BAPS mandirs in communities around the US and the world. Obama appreciated how BAPS mandirs have served as not only houses of worship but also community centers catering to society’s diverse social and humanitarian needs. In particular, the former President took note of the vibrant children and youth programs that take place in BAPS mandirs. Mahant Swami happy to learn that one of

Obama’s priorities in his post-Presidency is preparing the next generation of leaders. The two leaders then discussed how they could work collaboratively on this key effort in preparing the next generation of public servants. With reference to the Indian American community, Obama spoke about how, like in other immigrant communities, the second generation often engages more fully in civic life, making America theirs. The two leaders agreed that more needed to be done to encourage young South Asians to pursue careers in public service.
Both Mahant Swami and President spoke about how encouraging service requires encouraging individuals to see goodness in one another. Mahant Swami specifically explained the Hindu principle that each individual soul is divine, and so service of each individual is a selfless act of devotion. Mahant Swami took time to specifically praise the former President when he learned that the latter had set aside time, even as President, to have dinner with his family five nights a week. Mahant Swami Maharaj greatly values unity in all of the building blocks of society,

including families. He was also touched by Obama’s humility, sharing with the exPresident a verse from a John Bunyan poem, “He that is down, need fear no fall. He that is low, no pride. He that is humble ever shall have God to be his guide.” Mahant Swami Maharaj noted that he saw this humility in President Obama, remarking how it has been noted that the President took the time to look after and care for his staff while in office. As Mahant Swami Maharaj was departing, President Obama respectfully bade him farewell with the greeting: ‘Jay Swaminarayan.
Indian grad student found dead in lake
BY A STAFF WRITER CONEE, SC -- A coroner in South Carolina’s Oconee County has said that the death of a 22-year-old Indian graduate student at Clemson University was a suicide. The body of the student was found on September 4 in Lake Hartwell by fire crew members. The fire department responded to the scene around 7 am to a report of a possible drowning and recovered one body, that turned out to be the Indian student. While the student has been identified, coroner Karl Addis has refrained from releasing his identity as he awaits notification from the next of kin in India. An exam revealed that the student drowned but had no physical injuries, and Addis said it appeared that the student jumped from a railroad trestle that crosses the river. Addis deemed the death a suicide, though the county’s sheriff’s office, university police and the state’s natural resources department continue to investigate.

W
administration will weigh whether to extend the status for several countries whose immigrants have lived in the US for as long as 20 years—with a decision to end that status potentially upending their lives.

Amreen Sunil
