escribing US security engagement with India as crucial to security in the Indo-Pacific region, a US official says Washington is committed to a partnership including a strong and influential India in the security realm. “Our security engagement with India is a central element of the broad US-India strategic partnership,” Nisha Desai Biswal, Washington’s Indian-American point person for South Asia, said las week at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government in Cambridge, Massachusetts. “That’s why we are committed to a partnership that includes a strong and influential India in the security realm,” she said speaking on ‘US Foreign Policy in South Asia: A Vision for Prosperity and Security’. Asserting that the partnership “can contribute to the stability of the Indian Ocean region”, Biswal said “We remain committed to working with India as we develop a joint approach security in the Indo-Pacific.” The U.S. had also expanded its regional consultations with India to include South, Central, West, and East Asia and would soon hold new rounds of several of these dialogues, said the assistant secretary of state for South and Central Asian affairs.

Obama to underscore continued focus on Asia WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama’s trip to Asia next week is an “important opportunity” for him to underscore continued US focus on the region, the White House said on April 18. Calling it the world’s largest emerging region, National Security Adviser Susan Rice said: “We increasingly see our top priorities as tied to Asia,

whether it’s accessing new markets or promoting exports, or protecting our security interests and promoting our core values.” Obama’s week-long trip to Japan, South Korea, Malaysia and the Philippines, which begins on April 22, makes up for his October travel cancelled due to a government shutdown over budget row.

Last year, she noted, US sent a senior-level representative to participate for the first time in the Indian Ocean Regional Association (IORA) as a dialogue partner. Turning to what she called “our path-breaking defense relation-

ship”, she said spanning the last decade, the US has “made significant progress in helping India modernize its armed forces and in expanding joint exercises that enhance regional security,” maintained the US official.

surrender by 2:00pm on that date. In an order made public on April 17 Rakoff said that Gupta and prosecutors consented to the surrender date. Gupta is the highest profile executive convicted since Manhattan’s Indian-American US attorney Preet Bharara, nicknamed the “Sheriff of Wall Street” by Time magazine, began a crackdown on insider trading at hedge funds in 2007. At Gupta’s sentencing, Rakoff agreed to recommend that he serve his sentence at the federal prison in Otisville, NY. Gupta was convicted in June 2012 of passing confidential tips to billionaire hedge-fund manager Raj Rajaratnam, the co-founder of Galleon, about Berkshire Hathaway’s $5 billion investment in Goldman Sachs. A panel upheld the conviction on March 25, rejecting Gupta’s claim that Rakoff improperly admitted wiretapped telephone conversations in which he wasn’t a participant.

Hate crime charge against Sikh professor’s attacker in US NEW YORK: New York police have arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with an attack on a Sikh professor last September and charged him with a hate crime. Christian Morales was charged with aggravated harassment and committing a hate crime in the attack on Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs professor Prabhjot Singh, at a court appearance Saturday, Daily Columbia Spectator reported. While the investigation is still ongoing, Morales who was arrested on April 18 is the only person in custody, a New York Police Department spokesperson said. Singh, an observant Sikh who wears a turban and has a beard, was walking with a friend along 110th Street near Lenox Avenue in Harlem on the evening of September 21, when he was approached by a group of around 20 young men, Spectator said. At the time, the men “made anti-Muslim statements and

then they began punching the victim in the face.” Despite suffering a broken jaw and bruising, Singh returned to work the following Tuesday. “I think it’s critical to see that this is not the community we expect, and certainly not the country we expect,” Singh was quoted as saying. “It’s not the Harlem I know, and it’s certainly not going to change how I move around that neighborhood.”

100 Punjabi youths still detained in US for illegal entry WASHINGTON: An Indian-American community organization has sought the intervention of US lawmakers for securing the release of about 100 Punjabi youths detained by US immigration authorities in Texas for entering the US illegally. Only 37 of the detainees at US Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) El Paso Processing Centre in Texas had gone on a hunger strike earlier this month, but all of them have since called off their protest at its intervention, North

American Punjabi Association (NAPA) stated on April 21. The youths were arrested while crossing the US Border illegally at different times between January and November 2013, Satnam Singh Chahal, executive director of the Milpitas, California based organization said in an e-mail sent by IANS. Satnam Singh Chahal has also written to several law makers seeking their intervention to get the detainees released on “parole or on bonds as soon as possible.”

Modi is the flavor of Indian election coverage in US Analysts focus on not who but how BJP’s Narendra Modi may become the new tenant of 7 Race Course Road, the official residence of the Indian prime minister BY ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

A

s American media reports on the sounds, colors and smells of India’s crucial parliamentary election, Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi is the flavor of the season. The big story of course is India’s ‘insanely huge and complex’ (Time), ‘jaw-droppingly enormous’ (Washington Post) election ‘juggernaut’ (Wall Street Journal), but analysts have on the most part

focused on not who but how Modi may become the new tenant of 7 Race Course Road, the official residence of the Indian prime minister. Painting the Indian election as a “face off” between “Nehru-Gandhi heir and populist Hindu nationalist” (CNN), leading media outlets as also think tanks, have dilated on the fortunes of the two leading parties — Congress and BJP — as also newcomer Aam Aadmi Party. But “frontrunner” Modi gets the lion’s share of coverage even as it is acknowledged that Modi’s path to the top office will depend on a group of secondary politicians, including “three ladies” — Tamil Nadu’s Jayalalithaa Jayaram; West Bengal’s Mamata Banerjee; and Uttar Pradesh’s

Now the visa issue is mentioned, but only in the context of what Jeff Smith described as “the futility of the (US) visa policy” regarding the BJP leader Mayawati (New York Times). Time this week listed Modi as number one of the six choices ahead of musician Beyonce and President Barack Obama (3) in an invitation to readers to weigh in on 150 “artists, icons and leaders” who should figure in the magazine’s annual Time 100 list of the world’s most influential people. A CNN story on what it called “India’s first social media election” also began with how

during the Holi festival more than three million Twitter followers of Modi “received a personalized greeting from him.” Some Indian politicians “are borrowing strategies employed by US President Barack Obama’s 2012 presidential campaign, with the use of Thunderclap, an online platform which helps to make content viral,” the news channel noted. In the same vein, New York Times Saturday ran an opinion piece by Basharat Peer, author of Curfewed Night, a memoir of the conflict in Kashmir, on “Being Muslim Under Narendra Modi” And to think that less than six months ago Modi was mentioned only in the context of denial of a US visa for his alleged role or inaction during the 2002 Gujarat riots as the State’s chief minister. Now the visa issue is mentioned, but only in the context of what Jeff Smith, director of South Asia programmes at the American Foreign Policy Council in Washington, described as “the futility of the (US) visa policy” regarding the BJP leader. Suggesting “the US government has so profoundly mismanaged a decade-long visa ban” he looks at a Congressional report that Modi “would automatically be eligible for an A-1 (diplomatic) visa as head of state” as “welcome — if long overdue — news.” Similarly Richard M. Rossow, Wadhwani Chair in US-India Policy Studies at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies writes about “Preparing for a New Team in New Delhi” even as he acknowledges “nothing is certain in Indian politics.”

Varanasi basks in its importance, ignores ‘waves’ VARANASI, ASHISH ARORA

T

his teeming city, considered holy by Hindus, but home to a large proportion of Muslims, is slowly warming up to the political Star War as partymen and supporters of the three main contenders — Narendra Modi, Arvind Kejriwal and Ajai Rai — have begun canvassing for votes for the May 12 Lok Sabha election. The excitement in the city is evident on the streets and in kasbahs. People can be seen participating in the Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi’s chai par charcha (discussions over tea), five-time legislator and sitting Congress MLA Ajay Rai’s door-to-door meetings and Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal’s chaupal sabhas (corner meetings). “When a national level party announces its prime ministe-

rial candidate from your city, excitement can be obvious. And such announcement works positively for the city,” Sanjay Srivastava, a professor in the social sciences department of Banaras Hindu University (BHU), told IANS. But is there a “Modi wave” sweeping the ancient city? Its denizens feel otherwise. There are many for whom the “popular enthusiasm” for Modi is just “partisan propaganda”. “Where is the Modi wave? Is it being felt on the street? It is just a media creation,” said an academic in a government-run college. “It is the job of the camera to find faces, but these days faces are apparently approaching camera and trying to give an impression that they are all for one face, a national party. It is part of a big poll strategy of a political party,” the academic told IANS.

Addressing rallies in Bihar and Assam, the Bharatiya Janata Party leader said the Congress was sure to be defeated in the Lok Sabha elections. In his rallies in Assam, Modi challenged Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi to “a faceoff” as they were both addressing rallies in the state. “Rahul Gandhi, you are also in Assam today (Saturday). I am also here. So let’s have a face-off,” Modi said at Barpeta. Rahul Gandhi addressed a rally in Nagaon. And it is not without reason that Rahul’s mother and Congress president Sonia Gandhi held her first election rally in 10 years in Amethi last week. Striking an emotional chord, Gandhi asked people to repose their faith in Rahul whom she “gave to them in 2004”. “Like Indira ji gave Rajiv ji, my husband, to you many years back, I gave Rahul to you in 2004 and hope your love for him will continue,” she said at the rally. In India’s politics, we have RSVP too and a media house threw light on their activities,” Modi said. “Rahul, Sonia, Vadra and Priyanka... this is the RSVP model. Rahulji, you talk on Gujarat model but the nation wants to know this model.” Vadra is the son-in-law of Congress president Sonia Gandhi. Referring to the UPA as a

“mother-son” government, Modi urged people to get rid of the model for real development and change in their lives. “If you want change in life and better days, get rid of the motherson model of government. Vote for BJP to form a strong and stable government to bring change in your lives,” he said. Modi also addressed another election meeting in Supaul parliamentary constituency, where he again targeted the Gandhis as well as Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his Janata Dal-United.

The “once-in-a-decade” rally of Sonia Gandhi has caught the attention of BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, who has since been taunting the first family of Indian politics, saying when Rahul has failed to take

2012 state assembly elections, the candidature of Kumar Vishwas by the Aam Aadmi party (AAP) and Smriti Irani of the BJP has also made the electoral contest tough. Faced with a strong anti-incumbency sentiment across the country, the party is now worried that the two glib talking contestants would take the sheen off from the Congress ‘yuvraj’. The worry for Congressmen does not seem misplaced too. Considering the near rout of the Congress in Amethi in the

Having rented a house for himself here, Vishwas calls himself the frontrunner and says that “history will be written May 16” when the votes are counted.

am Admi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal attacked Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi and BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on April 23 and wondered from where the money was coming for their advertisements. The former Delhi chief minister held a roadshow here before filing his nomination papers. “I am going to file my nomination in this worn out vehicle but Modi will come in his helicopter. So people of Kashi should also not get fooled like the people in Amethi has been fooled for many years now,” Kejriwal told his supporters who were accompanying him to the collectors office. the money they were spending during the general election, Arvind Kejriwal alleged that these two leaders were taking money from

the corporates. “I do not have money to fight election. I just have Rs.500 in my pocket. But see such big hoardings of Modi are hanging

in Varanasi, where is the money coming from? Narendra Modi has spent `50billion and Rahul Gandhi has spent `10 billion in advertisements, where does all this money come from,” he questioned. The Aam Aadmi leader further said that the people of Varanasi now want a candidate with whom they can share their problems. “This time the people have to end the politics run by corporate giants and establish government of the people. We do not have money but we are walking in the path of truth that is why god is with us,” Kejriwal maintained. Arvind Kejriwal is contesting against BJP’s Narendra Modi and Congress leader Ajay Rai, the latter being a sitting MLA. Varanasi goes to the polls May 12 on the last day of the 10-phased ballotting that began April 7. The results will be declared May 16.

Arrest warrant against Giriraj Singh RANCHI: A Bokaro court has issued an arrest warrant against Bihar BJP leader Giriraj Singh for making a provocative speech. “An arrest warrant has been issued against Giriraj Singh by the court of Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate Amit Shekhar. Police had moved a petition on April 22 in court seeking his arrest,” a lawyer told IANS over the telephone. Two FIRs have been lodged against the Bharatiya Janata Party leader in Jharkhand. The first was lodged in Bokaro and the second in Deoghar district. Giriraj Singh had said that “those opposing (BJP’s prime ministerial candidate) Narendra Modi as the prime minister of India are supporters of Pakistan”.

Harvesting season worries grip Punjab leaders NEW DELHI: Days before the crucial fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Shazia Ilmi has landed into a controversy because of her alleged “Muslims ought to be communal this time” remark. Meanwhile, the party distanced itself from her remark and said she should not have said it. “Muslims are very secular. Muslims ought to be more communal. (They) do not vote for their own. (AAP leader) Arvind Kejriwal is your own. I say, it is enough of secularism,” Ilmi, who contested the Lok Sabha polls from Ghaziabad earlier in the month, is seen saying in the video. “Here helping the Congress win, there someone else. Please do not be so secular. Muslims are secular. They will continue to vote for oth-

ers. Other parties don’t do such things?” she said. It is a short 1.19 minute video clip, apparently a sting operation, where Ilmi is seen talking to Muslims. The video, believed to be shot in Mumbai, where she had gone for campaigning for AAP’s South Mumbai candidate Mira Sanyal, shows Ilmi talking with her head covered with a dupatta. Mumbai goes to polls on April 24. The AAP leader was quoted as saying that “communal means ‘of the community’, not in a hateful manner. “It was more of a sarcastic comment, play of words,” she added. Later, talking to a television channel, Ilmi did not deny the contents of the video but said she does not remember where she said it as she had attended several meetings.

s the election fever builds up in Punjab for the April 30 Lok Sabha polls, so is the concern among politicians about the polling date coming right in the middle of the peak wheat-crop harvesting season. The period between April 14 and May 15 is when the maximum wheat arrival happens in a state known as the food basket of the country. Government procurement agencies do the maximum procurement of the wheat crop generally between April 25 and May 10. “The centre and the Election Commission have not been fair to Punjab. The April 30 election date comes during the peak of the harvesting season,” Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has been

telling gatherings in Punjab’s rural areas, while urging farmers and their families to vote April 30. “I think that this is a deliberate ploy. If the elections in neighbour-

I see no justification in this. Make sure that you cast your vote April 30,” a vis-

ibly upset Badal tells people. All 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab go to the polls on April 30. The 19.5 million eligible voters will decide the fate of 253 candidates in the field. “I don’t think that much thought was given by the authorities while recommending the election date for Punjab. Farmers and their family members are busy in harvesting the crop, arranging to take it to the grain market. Even at the grain market, it can take three days or more for the procurement process to be completed. Many farmers will not be in their villages on election day,” Jaswant Singh, a farmer at Sahnewal near Ludhiana, told IANS. Even Punjab’s election department is keeping its fingers crossed on the voter turnout for the April 30 polling date.

Democrats rush to get rid of tainted Chatwal Chatwal pleaded guilty to using straw donorsin illegal campaign contributions to three unnamed candidates

ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

W

ith Indian-American hotel magnate, the high-profile Sant Singh Chatwal, pleading guilty to federal campaign finance fraud, several prominent Democratic leaders are rushing to return or donate to charity cash collected by their major fundraiser. New York mayor Bill de Blasio’s campaign said on April 18 it would return more than `916,950 in cash raised by Chatwal, who served on the host committee of at least one of de Blasio’s fund-raisers and bundling thousands of dollars on his behalf, New York Observer reported citing records. “Yes, we are returning all funds given or raised by Mr. Chatwal,” Jonathan Rosen, who worked for Mr. de Blasio’s campaign, told the Observer via email. Chatwal has raised funds for several prominent Democratic leaders including Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign and Senate majority leader Harry Reid. Chatwal, 70, pleaded guilty on April 17 in Brooklyn federal court to using straw donors to make more than $180,000 (`11,003400) in illegal campaign contributions to three unnamed candidates.

India-born technocrat joins battle with top US broadcasters WASHINGTON: In what has been dubbed as a David vs Goliath case, an India-born technocrat has taken America’s largest broadcasters, who claim his start-up’s television streaming service is a theft, to the Supreme Court. The apex court on April 22 heard arguments from the attorney of Aereo, an online TV platform founded by Chaitanya ‘Chet’ Kanojia, in defense of the legality of its television streaming service and explaining the logic underpinning it. The arguments summarized two years of legal tussling between Aereo, which provides streams of local television stations to paying subscribers, and the owners of those stations, according to CNNMoney. The TV station owners, major media companies like Disney and CBS, say that Aereo is violating copyright by allowing “public performances” of shows. Aereo says it is only enabling private screenings, just like off-the-shelf TV antennas do. Several of the justices, in their

Chaitanya Kanojia questioning, repeatedly expressed concerns that a broad ruling against Aereo would imperil the nascent cloud computing industry because of how Aereo works. They are expected to issue a ruling by early summer. The formal issue before the Supreme Court is “whether a company ‘publicly performs’ a copyrighted television programme when it retransmits a broadcast of that programme to thousands of paid subscribers over the Internet.”

Court papers don’t identify the recipients of Chatwal’s illegal largesse by name, but indicate it dated back at least to 2007. But influential Washington news site Politico cited a source familiar with the investigation as saying the unlawful donations were delivered to Clinton’s 2008 campaign, as well as to House member Kendrick Meek’s 2010 Senate campaign in Florida and to a campaign by former Senator Chris Dodd, who served as head of the Senate India Caucus. A Justice Department press release said: “There is no allegation that the candidates participated in, or were aware of Chatwal’s scheme.” Chatwal was a major figure among well-heeled Indian-Americans who support Democrats. In 2007, Chatwal organized a fundraiser that year that was billed to include appearances by two celebrity businessmen from India, neither of whom could legally donate at the fundraiser they were set to headline, Politico said. In a statement, cited by New York Observer a spokesperson for Chatwal said, “Mr. Chatwal deeply regrets his actions and accepts full responsibility for the consequences. He looks forward to resolving this personal matter.”

Dramatic surge in graduate applications from India ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

A

pplications from prospective Indian students to US graduate schools surged dramatically while those from China slowed down a bit in 2013, according to a new report from the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS). A 32-percent increase in applications from India, which accounts for 18 percent of all international graduate students at US institutions offset a one percent decline in applications from China, from where one third of the students come. Thus the preliminary number of applications from prospective international students to US graduate schools increased seven percent in 2014, up from the two percent increase seen in 2013, according to the CGS International Graduate Admissions Survey. This year’s encouraging increase is more consistent with the growth trend in international graduate applications seen between 2006 and 2012, after a post-9/11 decrease said the survey.

US is students’ preferred destination

There was a 32percent increase in applications from India to various US graduate schools

China, India, South Korea, Taiwan and Canada are the top five countries of origin for international graduate students in the United States, the report said. The survey covers in detail seven countries — China, India, South Korea, Taiwan, Canada, Mexico, and Brazil) and three regions — the Middle East, Africa and Europe. Altogether, the seven countries and three regions highlighted in the CGS International Graduate Admissions Survey are home countries to about 86 percent of all international graduate students in the US. CGS President Debra W. Stewart noted the seven percent gain is a positive sign for US graduate institutions, which collectively draw 15 percent of their overall graduate enrolments from international students. “Yet this year’s increase is not necessarily a sign of ongoing stability in international graduate applications and enrolments,” she said, “especially since a large share of the growth appears to be driven by a single country” — namely India.

egastar Amitabh Bachchan, who has started shooting for the untitled film directed by R. Balakrishnan, is nervous about it. “First day shoot new project R Balki...nerves, apprehensions, discomfort, uncertainty, butterflies! Only redemption, the director,” Amitabh posted on Twitter Sunday. The film, which also features Raanjhanaa star Dhanush and actor Kamal Haasan’s younger daughter Akshara, is currently being shot in Goa and the 71-year-old is getting nostalgic too. “It is hard to forget the various films that were shot here, in what circumstances they were made and what they look like now. But each and everyone of those incidents etched a mark on my system.” “The statue of a Portuguese celebrity, where during the shoot for Saat Hindustani, in the center of the street, we had gathered to perform the raising of the Indian flag, as a protest against a rule that had robbed us of our independence,” he posted on his blog srbachchan.tumblr.com. “Then the various locations on the schedule under production, which have remained close and very close to us and to those that spent time with us. Locations such as the climax of Kabhi Kabhie, the boat and song sequences of The Great Gambler and the ride along the river Mandovi, passing by the hospital, now a Bal Bhavan, where Amjad Khan fought for his post accident treatment. And just so many moments,” he added. Amitabh and Balakrishnan, popularly called R. Balki, had also worked together in films like Cheeni Kum and Paa.

IIFA debuts in US, set to enliven Tampa Bay TAMPA BAY (FLORIDA): The 15th edition of the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Weekend and Awards, an annual celebration of the multi-million dollar Hindi film industry abroad, in its US debut this year, is ready to lend Bollywood’s color, glamor and splendor to the city starting April 23. The gala will be “bigger and better” than ever before, said its organizer. With names like Madhuri Dixit, Shatrughan Sinha, Shahid Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Vidya Balan, Sonakshi Sinha, Hrithik Roshan, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and Farhan Akhtar slated to attend the gala, along with Hollywood celebrities like John Travolta, Kevin Spacey and reportedly Ang Lee, chances are, the conjecture may just turn out to be true. In a tete-a-tete with IANS ahead of the event, Sabbas Joseph, director, Wizcraft International Entertainment, the event’s organiser said: “For a very long time we had the US in mind, but we were waiting for the right time.”

ctor Vivek Oberoi, who has dubbed for Jamie Foxx’s character of Electro in the Hindi version of Hollywood film The Amazing Spider-Man 2, says he agreed to this as he is a huge fan of the Oscar-winning actor. “I am a huge fan of Jamie Foxx’s. I love his work. The minute they (Sony Pictures) told me ‘You have to be Jamie Foxx’s voice’, I was excit-

ed,” Vivek told reporters here at the trailer launch of the Hindi version of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. “It was a daunting task because the way he has performed the initial part, was so difficult. If you watch the film, you will find it difficult to catch what he is saying and how he is saying,” he added. The 37-yearold had earlier dubbed for a few films and international TV series Small Wonder, The Bold and the Beautiful and The Restless.

Kangana shines in ‘Revolver Rani’ MUMBAI: After Queen, Kangana Ranaut is back at the box office as Revolver Rani and she would battle it out with musical Kaanchi and thriller Samrat & Co. for the top honors when the threesome hit the screens on April 18. Kangana loves to push the envelope by stepping into unconventional roles and she continues the trend with Revolver Rani, which sees the actress in a never-seenbefore avatar of a don shooting guns and mouthing dialogues in a quite profane language. With her brilliant performance in Queen, Kangana not only raised the bar for her contemporaries but for herself too thus raising fans’ expectations from her. Kangana will face stiff competition from Rajeev Khandelwal, another brilliant actor, in Samrat & Co.

2 States’: A magical north-south love story you wish wouldn’t end Film: “2 States”; Cast: Arjun Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Ronit Roy, Amrita Singh, Revathi, Shiv Subramaniam; Director: Abhishek Varman; Rating: ****

M

agically, 2 States ends with a beautifully staged wedding where the film’s culture-crossed couple finally get their wish. Sigh of relief? Not quite. This is a film you don’t want to end. It’s a story....but wait, it doesn’t seem like a story!! Not in the sense of ‘Once upon a time when Boy Met Girl’. You know exactly where our twosome, the gorgeous Ananya and the diffident Krish are going...But you get so sucked into their journey, their courtship,

conflicts, tiffs and buts, that you feel after a point that you aren’t watching them in a film. They are people we know. And love. Some come, fall in love. These are people whom you’ll carry home and keep in some corner of your heart. Not just (gorgeous) Ananya (who incidentally is played by the very gorgeous Alia Bhatt) and her other-half Krish, but also their parents, specially Krish’s father a man so misunderstood all his life he fears being rec-

ognized for some deeply-concealed goodness in his heart that comes out towards the end of this film. Indian marriages, they say, are the marriage of two families. Sure enough, when the shy repressed Punjabi Krish meets the spunky spirited beer-guzzling, chicken-chewing Ananya, there is hell to pay from both sides. Most of the time cultural differences are articulately pinned down

in the film. Debutant director Abhishek Varman knows how to tell a story embedding individual scenes with a distinctive personality without straining for effect. Alia dressed as a bride looks like a doll. 2 States creates a world where characters don’t shout to be heard. They just belong to a world where being proper, politically or otherwise, is not always a pre-condition. — By Subhash K. Jha

Aditya Chopra, Rani Mukerji marry in Italy MUMBAI: Finally, there’s clarity on the relationship status of Aditya Chopra and Rani Mukerji. The Yash Raj Films (YRF) head honcho and actress exchanged vows in a small affair held in Italy on April 21, said an official announcement. “We are happy to announce that Aditya Chopra and Rani Mukerji got married last night. The wedding was a very small intimate affair with very close family and friends,” Rafiq Gangjee, vice president (marketing and communications), YRF, said in a statement. “We wish the couple a very happy married life,” Gangjee added. Aditya, the elder son of late filmmaker Yash Chopra, was earlier married to Payal Khanna. It’s been a fairytale life for Rani Mukerji, and it continues to be so for the newly married actress, who exchanged vows with filmmaker Aditya Chopra in a “beautiful” ceremony in Italy. She says she missed having her husband’s late father and filmmaker Yash Chopra around for the D-day. Rani, who has maintained silence on her relationship with Aditya for several years, has now opened up about the “happiest day” of her life. “I would like to share the happiest day of my life with all my fans all over the world whose love and blessings have been part of my journey all these years. I know that all my wellwishers who have waited for this day will be really happy for me,” Rani said in a statement. Talking about the ceremony, the actress said: “It was a beautiful wedding in the Italian countryside with just a few of our close family and friends with us.”

Lauding his dad’s endeavor, Arjun said: “Mr. India is the epitome of special effects and emotions, sci-fi and family film coming together. I feel my father is ahead of his times with the kind of visual effects he had in Mr. India, it’s commendable.” “It had clean visual effects, it’s an inspirational piece of work. As a creative person, I would have wished I were involved in it. I am very proud that my father was the person who made it,” the 27-year-old said.

Laughing in embarrassment Nargis explained, “I was in terrible pain and I was on only half a harness. For the rest of the support, I was supported by my co-star Arunoday Singh in mid-air. “Arunoday is a dear friend and someone I’ve known from the time I came to India. He’s a great guy. NYPD’S MUSLIM SPYING UNIT FOLDS UP BY A STAFF WRITER

N

EW YORK — The New York Police Department has disbanded a special unit whose efforts to try to detect terror threats in Muslim communities through secret surveillance had sparked outrage. The surveillance program by the NYPD Intelligence Division had come under fire by community activists who accused the department of abusing civil rights. The program relied on plainclothes officers to eavesdrop on people in bookstores, restaurants and mosques. The tactic was detailed in a series of stories by The Associated Press and became the subject of two federal lawsuits. The Demographics Unit’s actions also crept into New Jersey, according to reports first published by the Associated Press in 2012. NYPD detectives, allegedly working with the blessings of former Newark Police Director Garry McCarthy, created a secret dossier in 2007, filled with detailed information on the city’s 44 mosques and other Muslim-owned businesses and Islamic schools. McCarthy has repeatedly declined to comment on the matter, and Newark police officials also said they had no idea the NYPD was here in 2007. In March of 2012, the NYPD’s former chief police spokesman, Paul Browne, told journalists that Newark police officers accompanied NYPD detectives in the city “at all times,” and suggested several high-level police

officials were aware of the surveillance operation. In June 2009, a building supervisor also stumbled upon an NYPD safe house, a place where members of the demographics unit could lie low, near the New Brunswick campus of Rutgers University. The 911 call from the supervisor sent FBI agents and local police scrambling to the building, as they were completely unaware of the NYPD operation. The move angered lawmakers and Muslims alike, and even Gov. Chris Christie approached US Attorney General Eric Holder to express his concerns over the incident shortly after the controversy came to light in March of 2012.

Three months later, a group of New Jersey Muslims became the first to mount a legal challenge against the spy operations. In a series of articles that began in August 2011, the AP documented that the police had systematically spied on Muslim neighborhoods, listened in on sermons, infiltrated colleges and photographed law-abiding residents as part of a broad effort to watch communities where terror cells might operate. Individuals and groups were monitored even when there was no evidence they were linked to terrorism or crime. The investigation revealed that thenpolice Commissioner Ray Kelly had brought

Man held for harassing MUSLIM teen-aged girl in bus BY A STAFF WRITER

UEENS-NY — An Ozone Park man with a lengthy criminal record who allegedly harassed a 15-year-old Muslim girl and called her a ‘terrorist’ as she rode a city bus in Kew Gardens Hills last week said he spat on her accidentally, prosecutors said. Perry Germano, 50, who the police say had more than three dozen prior arrests, dating back to 1982, has been taken into custody and charged with attempted assault, aggravated harassment, endangering the welfare of a child, disorderly conduct and menacing as a hate crime. Germano, according to his criminal complaint, told the police that he had an argument with the teen but denied spitting on her and making anti-Muslim statements. “I had a dispute with a girl on the bus, I didn’t intentionally spit on her, when I said ‘F-k you’ to her, spit came out of my mouth,” he allegedly said. “I cocked my hand back at her, but never said anything about race or religion.” The police released surveillance images of Germano who approached the teen as they were riding the Q88 bus on the Horace Harding Expressway near Kissena Boulevard at 9 am on

YDE PARK (IL) — The police are warning Hyde Parkers to remember to close and lock their windows after a recent spate of

T. ANN (MO) -- A blind woman and her dog were hit by an SUV when they were out for an evening stroll last week on St. Gregory Street near its intersection with St. Charles Rock Road. The vehicle hopped the curb, struck the 46-year-old woman and the black Labrador, and then drove off, the police said. The woman suffered bruises and the service dog was more seriously injured. The incident happened about 8 pm. The SUV left the road after turning onto St. Gregory. Perry Germano

April 7, according to the NYPD. According to the criminal complaint, Germano shoved the teen and said to her: “F-k you, f--k your people, you Muslim, you are a terrorist.” He also allegedly spat on the girl several times and told her: “I’m not scared to hit you with my fist.” The complaint also said that a surveillance video of the incident showed Germano shoving

the girl with his elbow, raising his fist and spitting on her. According to reports, the man became angry after the girl’s bag brushed up against him. the police said Germano had 39 prior arrests, including for forgery, criminal possession of stolen property, theft and assault. Germano was held in lieu of $3,000 bond and is due back in court on April 22.

in a CIA official to help develop an intelligence division unlike that of any other U.S. police department. It assigned people called rakers to ethnic neighborhoods, infiltrating enterprises ranging from booksellers to cafes, and people called mosque crawlers to Muslim houses of worship. The tactics disclosed by the series stirred debate over whether the NYPD was infringing on the civil rights of Muslims and illegally engaging in religious and ethnic profiling. Hundreds of Muslims staged rallies to protest the spying, and the disclosures prompted more than a dozen religious leaders to boycott thenMayor Michael Bloomberg’s annual interfaith breakfast. In Washington, 34 members of Congress demanded a federal investigation into the NYPD’s actions. Attorney General Eric Holder said he was disturbed by reports about the operations, and the Department of Justice said it was reviewing complaints received from Muslims and their supporters. The AP’s reporting also prompted an investigation by the CIA’s inspector general. That internal inquiry concluded that the CIA, which is prohibited from domestic spying, hadn’t broken any laws, but criticized the agency for allowing an officer assigned to the NYPD to operate without sufficient supervision. Kelly, the former police commissioner, had defended the spying tactics, saying officers observed legal guidelines.

Park this week going door-to-door warning residents that there were five burglaries east of the Metra tracks between 52nd and 56th streets in recent weeks. Mason said in only one instance did the burglars enter when a resident was home. On April 5, an apartment resident who was asleep was awakened at 4.10 pm in the 5400 block of South Hyde Park Boulevard when two men came into his apartment through a window. “The occupant got up, and when the two

guys saw the occupant they ran out,” Mason said. Residents of the Carolan Apartments, 5480 S. Cornell Ave., said at a meeting last week on community policing that they hade a video of two men jumping over the back fence shortly before a March 30 break-in when a computer was stolen. The Chicago police said they had a copy of the surveillance footage and passed it along to detectives, but were not yet ready to release a description of the men in the video.

Metro-North train mishap victim files $100-m suit

EW YORK -- Metro-North is the target of a $100-million lawsuit filed by an employee paralyzed in December’s deadly train derailment in the Bronx. Samuel Rivera announced the lawsuit at the Burke Rehabilitation Hospital in White Plains where he has been undergoing treatment for the past three months. Four people were killed and another 100 injured. Samuel River’s lawyer says Rivera, who was heading into Manhattan to spend the day with his son, has extraordinary medical needs from his injuries. It was the second lawsuit to be filed over the derailment. Last Friday, Eddie Russell, a retired police officer, sued Metro-North for $10 million. Metro-North is run by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

MAN ARRESTED FOR HARASSING SIKH PROFESSOR BY A STAFF WRITER

other people intervened, the police said. Morales is in custody and detectives from the hate crimes task force are investigating the case. Sikh Americans have been targeted by attackers who in some cases confuse Sikhism and Islam because Sikh men and boys are required to wear turbans and beards. Singh co-authored a 2012 op-ed in The New York Times accusing the federal government of failing to accurately measure the extent of anti-Sikh violence in response to the August 2012 shooting at a Sikh temple in suburban Milwaukee that left six people and the white supremacist gunman dead. In the op-ed, Singh and his co-author argued that it was wrong “to assume that every attack against a Sikh is really meant for a Muslim.” They said Sikhs have historically been targeted.

EW YORK -- A man accused of pulling the beard of a Sikh professor before a group of young men who had called the professor “Osama” and a “terrorist” attacked him, has been arrested and charged with a hate crime. Christian Morales, 20, was charged with aggravated harassment in connection with last September’s attack on Columbia University professor Prabhjot Singh, who suffered a broken jaw. Singh, 31, was walking home with a friend in upper Manhattan when he was approached by a group of 12 to 15 young men. “I heard, ‘Get him. Osama.’ I heard ‘terrorist.’ And I felt somebody grab my beard,” Singh said then. The Indian American was then kicked and punched in an attack that ended after

2 indicted for bomb scare in NJ schools BY A STAFF WRITER

AMILTON — A Vineland man and woman accused of making bomb threats that led to the evacuation of two schools and a courthouse in Atlantic County have been indicted. Raheem H. Brown, 36, and Kemon Powell, 40 allegedly made threats by phone at about 11 am on February 4, claiming explosive devices were placed in the Atlantic County Criminal Courthouse and the Hess Middle School. The two also are accused of saying a Superior Court judge would be harmed, Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain said in a news release. Two hours later, a second threatening phone call was made, this time to Shane elementary School. A search of all three buildings by K9 bomb detection teams turned up nothing unusual. Brown was arrested two days later at his home. Powell was taken into custody on March 11. Both face four counts of counts of terroristic threats, three counts of false public alarm, and one count of conspiracy. Brown

remains held on $500,000 bail, while Powell is being held in lieu of $200,000, cash or bond. Schools in New Jersey evacuated students at least 61 times during the 2012-2013 school year because of bomb threats, state data show. The New Jersey total marks a 27 per

cent jump from the previous year, and the estimated price tag for responding to the threats has surpassed $2 million, according to a memo from the state Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness that was distributed to school chiefs.

Rajat Gupta to be behind bars soon BY A STAFF WRITER

Rajat Gupta, former Goldman Sachs Group director, has agreed to surrender to prison authorities on June 17 to begin a two-year sentence.

EW YORK-Former Goldman Sachs Group director Rajat Gupta, who was convicted in 2012 on insider trading charges, has agreed to surrender to prison authorities on June 17 to begin a two-year sentence. U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff in Manhattan directed Gupta, 65, who lost his appeal for a new trial in March, to surrender by 2 pm on that date. In an April 17 order, Rakoff said that the high-profile Indian American executive and prosecutors had consented to the surrender date. Gupta is the highest-profile executive convicted by Preet Bharara, the Indian American US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, who began a crackdown on insider trading at hedge funds in 2007.

At Gupta’s sentencing in 2012, Rakoff agreed to recommend he serve his sentence at the federal prison in Otisville, N.Y. The Federal Bureau of Prisons is not required to follow the recommendation. Gupta was convicted in June 2012 of passing confidential tips to billionaire hedge-fund manager Raj Rajaratnam, cofounder of Galleon Group, about Berkshire Hathaway’s $5 billion investment in Goldman Sachs. A three-judge panel of the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the conviction on March 25, rejecting Gupta’s claim that the court improperly allowed admission of wiretapped telephone conversations in which Gupta wasn’t a participant. Bharara’s office has to date won convictions or secured guilty pleas against 80 individuals and four entities in its insider trading investigation.

THE WORLD ‘US, China must strengthen trust’ LOS ANGELES: American and Chinese economies and societies have never been as closely joined as they are today, but strengthening trust between the two countries is essential to tackle big problems, said a report. The report entitled ‘Building US-China Trust: Through Next Generation People, Platforms and Programmes’ is a joint project by the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California and the School of International Studies of Peking University, reported Xinhua. “Major differences between the two countries dominate the headlines and polls show that people in the two countries have less respect for and trust in the other country,” said the report. “Moving forward on tough issues such as cyber security, market access, and regional disputes requires building a much stronger foundation of mutual understanding that we have been able to achieve,” it said. The document said there is a need to adapt to changes associated with China’s rapid economic rise, the different histories, values, and political systems of the US and China.

War with Ukraine unlikely, says Russia No military presence in border areas with Ukraine, says Russia; Ukrainian politician found dead

war between Russia and Ukraine is most unlikely, a senior Russian defense official said on April 22. “I don’t believe the Russians and Ukrainians will fight each other,” Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov said. Russian and Ukrainian military commanders continued to maintain contact, though this had reduced considerably, Xinhua cited Antonov as saying. Among the issues the two defense ministries are currently discussing are returning Ukrainian weapons left in Crimea and the return of servicemen recruited from Crimea to the Ukrainian army, he said. Crimea acceded to Russia March 18 following a popular referendum not recognized by Kiev and Western powers. Antonov also described as false allegations that Russia had beefed

Five killed in Ukraine gas station blast KIEV: At least five people were killed and five injured in a gas station explosion in Ukraine’s northern Kiev region on April 22, authorities said. According to the State Service for Emergencies, the blast occurred at a gas station near Pereyaslav-Khmelnytsky town, some 95 km south of capital Kiev, triggering a huge fire. Four people died on the spot while a woman succumbed to her injuries in hospital. Investigators blamed the accident on improper conception of the gas station project and violation of safety rules.

up its military presence in the border areas with Ukraine. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s acting president Oleksandr Turchynov has ordered relaunching military operations against pro-Russian militants in the east after two people, one a local politician, were “tortured to death”. The body of politician Vladimir Rybak, he said, was found near rebel-held Sloviansk. The move came as US Vice-President Joe Biden was visiting Ukraine. As he met Ukrainian leaders in Kiev, Biden called on Russia to “stop talking and start acting” to defuse the crisis. The US and the West accuse Russia of using undercover military to back separatists in eastern Ukraine.

Korean ferry toll reaches 113 SEOUL: The toll in last week's ferry capsize off South Korea's southwestern coast rose to 150 on April 23 as hundreds of divers worked on recovering bodies from the submerged vessel. As the search and rescue operation entered the eighth day since the ferry sank April 16, 152 people are still missing, with the number of those rescued unchanged at 174, Xinhua reported. Search

operations were suspended and then resumed as tidal currents became faster than forecast overnight. The waters off Jindo island, where the 6,825-ton ferry Sewol capsized, are known for the country's secondfastest currents. A weather forecast said that the currents would slow down for four days through Thursday. The water temperature was around 11-12 degrees Celsius in the morning, with waves being as high as 0.5 meters.

Kachin threat to Myanmar kids: Unicef IANS, UNITED NATIONS

T

he Unicef has warned that children fraternity in Myanmar is facing different types of dangers in the light of recent fighting between government forces and Kachin rebels. The recent fighting and the resulting displacement of thousands of people, have significantly increased the risks to young peo-

ple, including possible recruitment, limited access to basic services and the threat of landmines, Xinhua quoted the Unicef as saying on April 22. An estimated 1,000 children are among those forced to leave their temporary homes amid the fighting between the Myanmar National Army and the Kachin Independence Army in areas of southern Kachin state, Unicef said in a release.

Nepal offers relief to kin of Sherpa victims KATHMANDU: Four days after a deadly avalanche on the slopes of Mt Everest claimed 13 lives, the Nepalese government on April 22 announced relief packages for the families of those Sherpa guides killed in the mishap. The families of the victims will be provided with a sum of $15,789 as insur-

ance, Nepal’s tourism ministry said. The government had previously set the amount at $1,052 per person, but the issue was raised at a meeting of stakeholders hosted by the tourism ministry. The families of the Sherpas who lost their lives in the recent avalanche will be given the renewed amount.

LONDON: A female British tourist in Sri Lanka has been detained and will be deported for having a Buddha tattoo on her arm, a media report said on April 22. Naomi Michelle Coleman was arrested at the Colombo international airport Monday on arrival from India after the airport authorities saw

Casinos in Nepal face shut down KATHMANDU: All casinos in Nepal have been shut down since April 21 after their managements failed to heed the government’s repeated warnings over their outstanding tax and royalty dues, the ministry of culture said on April 22. A total of 10 casinos operating in Nepal owe $11.26 million to the government and the pending dues date back to fiscal year 2005-06, Xinhua reported on April 22. The Nepal Casino Rules, 2013, require that each casino pays $42,105

to the government every year as a royalty. With the closure of casinos, the Himalayan country’s gaming business that began around 47 years ago, has suffered a major jolt, and uncertainty looms over their revival. The ministry of culture, tourism and civil aviation that regulates the casino business in Nepal last week asked the home ministry to declare these joints illegal and close them down. The move followed the casino operators’ reluctance to clear their outstanding tax and royalty dues.

Pak test-fires n-capable ballistic missile the tattoo of the Buddha sitting on a lotus flower on her right arm, BBC reported. The authorities found the tattoo to be an insult to Buddhism, the religion of the majority ethnic Sinhalese. Coleman is being held at an immigration detention camp until her deportation. Sri Lanka is highly sensitive about images of the Buddha. Authorities take strict action against depiction of such images.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan successfully test-fired a nuclear-capable ballistic missile on April 22, the military said. The 290-km short-range surface-tosurface Hatf III (Ghaznavi) ballistic missile can carry nuclear and conventional warheads, Xinhua reported citing an army statement. “The successful launch concluded the field training exercise of the Strategic Missile Group of Army Strategic Forces Command,” the statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations said. The army said the successful test has been warmly appreciated by the

president and the prime minister, who congratulated all those involved in the effort. The army said the test was witnessed by top military officers, including Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, Gen. Rashad Mahmood.

TRS backstabbed Congress: Rahul Rahul Gandhi says TRS chief earlier promised to merge his party with Congress IANS, NIZAMABAD/MAHABUBNAGAR

C

ongress vice president Rahul Gandhi on April 21 accused Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) chief K. Chandrasekhara Rao of “backstabbing” by going back on his word to merge his party with the Congress. Addressing two election meetings in Telangana, he said that TRS is interested only in power and urged people to vote for his party to ensure development and prosperity in Telangana, promising to make the new state, which will come into existence, number one in the country. Gandhi said after the decision to carve out Telangana state, the TRS president came to his house. “He sat in my room and spoke for five to six minutes. He shook hands and said ‘Rahul ji I am with you’. He went out and again came back, shook hands with me and said ‘I want to embrace you’. He

embraced me and said ‘I will stand by you at any cost’. He then went out and later went back on his word and stabbed (me in the back),” he said. “He (Chandrasekhara Rao) also promised that if Telangana is formed a Dalit will become chief minister. He lied to Congress and

he lied to you,” said Gandhi. Addressing his first public meeting in Telangana region after the parliament passed the Telangana bill in February, he said the TRS had no role either in drafting the bill or passing it in parliament. He alleged that the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), the Bharatiya Janata Party

(BJP) and the YSR Congress tried to stall the bill. Gandhi said the 60year-old dream of Telangana people would come true on June 2 with the formation of Telangana state. He promised 4,000 MW power project, national project status to Pranahita-Chevella and Palamur lift irrigation projects, 10-year tax relief in backward areas and use of revenue from Hyderabad for development of all parts of the region. Rahul Gandhi said Congress alone could ensure social justice, protect secular values and carry along all sections of people. He targeted the BJP saying the party pit Hindus against Muslims and work only to benefit few businessmen and industrialists. “They want two India. One for poor and another for rich. We want one India where all people should enjoy the fruits of development,” he said. “Today, the clothes you wear, the wristwatch and footwear you use, all carry made in China label,” said the Congress VP.

Kiran Reddy not to contest election HYDERABAD: Former Andhra Pradesh chief minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy has decided not to contest the assembly elections. The president of Jai Samaikyandhra Party (JSP) sprang a surprise on April 19 by fielding his brother Kishore Kumar Reddy from Pileru assembly constituency in their native Chittoor district in Seemandhra. Kiran Reddy, who was scheduled to file his nomination to seek re-election from Pileru, opted out in the last minute and instead fielded his brother. Addressing the people, he said he would campaign for the party across Seemandhra. He resigned as the chief minister and also quit the Congress party after the parliament passed a bill in February this year for bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. He along with some MPs expelled by the Congress floated JSP in March.

BJP-TDP alliance to continue in Seemandhra It’s national vs IANS, HYDERABAD

T

he alliance between the BJP and the TDP in Seemandhra will continue as the two parties on April 18 ironed out their differences. After prolong talks with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N. Chandrababu Naidu, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national spokesman Prakash Javadekar announced that their alliance will continue. He said the BJP will give up one assembly seat earlier allotted to it and the TDP will give it three seats in the legislative council. The BJP will now contest 13 assembly and four Lok Sabha seats in Seemandhra. BJP Seemandhra chief K. Haribabu said the TDP agreed to give three legislative council seats

to the BJP. Under the seat sharing agreement, the TDP had originally left 15 assembly and five Lok Sabha seats for its national partner. However, due to differences over the choice of seats, the TDP reduced the number to 14 assem-

bly and four Lok Sabha. The latest row led to the BJP giving up another assembly seat on the assurance that it will get three seats in the upper house. The BJP has also reportedly agreed to change three candidates as the TDP found them weak. Javadekar, who is in charge of BJP affairs in Andhra Pradesh, met Naidu at the latter’s residence. Naidu had earlier said that the alliance is proving costly for the TDP as the BJP has fielded weak candidates. The former chief minister reportedly is miffed with the BJP for fielding his estranged sister-inlaw Purandeswari for Lok Sabha from Rajampet. Purandeswari quit Congress and joined the BJP. She, however, was not given ticket from Visakhapatnam.

local issues in Tamil Nadu

VENKATACHARI JAGANNATHAN, CHENNAI

I

n a multi-cornered election contest in Tamil Nadu, the campaign strategy of various formations is based on national versus local issues. AIADMK general secretary and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa with prime ministerial ambitions talks largely about national issues, while her opponents talk about the local — bijli (electricity), sadak (road) and paani (water) problems. Much before other parties had finalized their alliances and their

manifestos, Jayalalithaa announced her poll promises and started touring the constituencies in a helicopter. Her campaign theme is mostly national focused on oil pricing policies, defense deals, foreign relations, price rise, mis-management of the economy, various scams under the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government led by PM Manmohan Singh.

Lok Sabha elections: Too many super-rich in fray in Andhra Pradesh MOHAMMED SHAFEEQ, HYDERABAD

T

hree leading industrialists, who are in the fray for Lok Sabha elections for the first time in Andhra Pradesh, have family assets of over `5 billion each, overtaking many businessmen-politicians who are seeking re-election. Jayadev Galla, vicepresident and managing director of the Amara Raja Group, is the richest of them all with family assets of `6.83 billion. The US-educated corporate

honcho, who joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) last month, is contesting for the Guntur Lok Sabha seat. Jayadev alone has movable assets of `5.42 billion while his wife Padmavathi Galla’s liquid assets are worth `4.5 million. Their two sons together own movable assets of over `50 million. Jayadev has immovable assets worth `792.4 million and Padmavathi `67.6 million. Jayadev’s annual income is `163 million that of his wife `5.46 million.

If elected, the 48-year-old industrialist from Chittoor district of the Rayalaseema region will become the richest MP from the state, a distinction earlier enjoyed by YSR Congress chief Y.S.Jaganmohan Reddy, who had declared family assets of `4.06 billion in 2011 by-election to the Kadapa Lok Sabha seat. Jaganmohan Reddy, son of late chief minister Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy, is contesting for the assembly from Pulivendula in his native Kadapa district in Seemandhra. He has declared that he and his

wife own assets of `4.16 billion. Ayodhya Rami Reddy is a close second with family assets of `6.50 billion. The chairman of infrastructure conglomerate Ramky Group is YSR Congress candidate from the Narasaraopet Lok Sabha constituency in Guntur district. He has an estimated `6.48billion movable assets including cash deposits, shares and debentures and vehicles owned by his family. Rami Reddy has movable assets worth `5.92 billion while his wife Dakshyani has assets of `522.5 million.

M

anchester United on April 22 sacked manager David Moyes after just 10 months in charge and appointed their former Welsh international Ryan Giggs as interim manager till the end of the season. Moyes, who was given a sixyear contract after the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson, was handpicked by the Scot to take charge of the reigning English Sacked league chammanager pions.

Moyes’s backroom staff of Steve Round, Phil Neville, Jimmy Lumsden and Chris Woods are also likely to leave. He will also fly to the northeastern city of Fortaleza and take part in the local organising committee’s board meeting in Rio de Janeiro on April 24. It is expected to be Valcke’s final visit to Brazil before returning in late May and remaining until the end of the tournament. Golfer Lahiri’s Malaysian performance gives him hope KUALA LUMPUR: Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri is ready to return to the winning trail after enjoying a remarkable Malaysian swing. The 26-year-old finished tied-10th at the star-studded Malaysian Open on April 20 and was also part of Team Asia where he contributed two points to tie with Europe in the inaugural EurAsia Cup here last month.

Lahiri won three of his Asian Tour titles on home soil and his results in recent weeks have given him added motivation to win his first title outside his comfort zone. “It has been a while since I’ve been playing well. I’m playing well enough to win. I just need to be patient and relaxed and can’t get too far ahead of myself. That’s what I’ve learnt from last week,” said Lahiri. The Indian enjoyed a fine run at the Malaysian Open after ending the event on eight-under-par.

Want to de-stress? Sex can help you NEW YORK: What can be the best way to defuse a fight or a conflict? Sex. Yes, you read it right. Learn the art from bonobos, a species of dwarf chimpanzee. Rather than allowing a fight to escalate, they employ sexual contacts to diffuse tension and restore peace. “Observing bonobos, it becomes clear that sex can play many roles in bonobo society — especially in resolving social tension,” said Zanna Clay from Georgia-based Emory University who is studying how bonobos use sex after conflicts. The researchers tested four main hypotheses regarding postconflict sexual contacts: stress reduction, reproductive benefits, mediate food-conflicts, and repairing valuable bonds. “It appears that the sexual physiology of bonobos is closely related to their stress alleviation,” added co-author Frans de Waal. This may have to do with the rubbing of sexual organs causing reductions in cortisol levels in the blood or causing increases in “bonding” hormones such as oxytocin or vasopressin, the researchers were quoted as saying in a report on wired.com. Nevertheless, although bonobos

for each of these in our Shape Up for Summer Guide and you’ll be feeling radiant, alive and raring to head for the beach in tip top shape for the summer!” HERE ARE SOME TIPS: n Food for fuel: Rather than viewing food as your biggest enemy when trying to shed those pounds, try changing your perception and seeing food as vital fuel for fitness and well being. Ensure your diet contains plenty of carbohydrates, protein and fats, and all in combination for optimum health benefits. n Cut down on processed foods: When you can make the time, making your meals from scratch helps avoid eating hidden preservatives, artificial sweeteners and hydrogenated oils. Most importantly, cut back on soda, dairy chocolate and package bought cookies, cakes and sweets. Instead when you want a snack, grab a healthy snack bar made

with fruits and nuts. Whatever you’re doing, keep healthy snacks at hand to avoid temptation. n Eat regularly: Be sure to eat regular meals and don’t skip breakfast, it sets you up with energy for the day. At the very least eating fruit or making breakfast bars with oats, honey, dry fruit and nuts will be better for you than sugar laden cereal with cow’s milk. n Learn to cook healthily: If you love cooking then make the switch, get passionate about making nutrient dense meals packed with colorful vegetables. If you’ve always hated cooking, then try to learn to love it, it could be your key to enjoying how your body looks and feels. n Exercise: Exercise is key for shaping up. But to stay motivated, it needs to be fun, so find a form of exercise you enjoy and do it regularly. Little and often works well if you struggle to find dedicated time.

Spring fashion trend of 2014: Collarless coat IANS, LOS ANGELES

use sexual contacts especially frequently and habitually in stressful contexts, the relationship between stress and non-reproductive sexual contacts is actually quite widely observed across numerous animals, including

humans, they concluded. A recent study showed that sexual dysfunctions are increasing in the US ranging from 10 to 52 percent of men and 25 to 63 percent of women between the ages of 18 and 59.

For spring-summer 2014, the coat has been the focal point on most fashion catwalks with many designers and celebrities following the trend. But the style that emerged is the collarless coat. While there have been plenty of different styles, the streamlined coat minus the collar usually stands out with its super clean style, reports femalefirst.co.uk. The trend was recently spotted in the ramp shows of American multi-brand store J. Crew and Los Angeles-based women’s wear brand Clover Canyon. A collarless coat with floral print as well as those in neutral and solid colours if you want something a little more wearable, are working well. Wear the collarless coat for work with a pencil skirt or trousers, or try a sleek jumpsuit or bodycon dress for a date-night outfit. Designed and produced in Los Angeles, each Clover Canyon collection reflects the eclectic, joyful spirit of California through vivid prints and streamlined silhouettes, says the website of Clover Canyon. Clover Canyon is available across the globe.
