U

S President Donald Trump has said a “big day” is planned on national security, including an announcement to build a wall on the border between the US and Mexico and restrict immigration from Muslim countries. The President alluded to his expected actions on Twitter this week, writing: “Big day planned on NATIONAL SECURITY tomorrow. Among many other things, we will build the wall!” The tweet was initially issued with a

‘Millions voted illegally in polls’ WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump believes millions of votes were cast illegally in the last year’s presidential election, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer has said. “The President does believe that, I think he’s stated that before, and stated his concern of voter fraud and people voting illegally during the campaign and continues to maintain that belief based on studies and evidence people have brought to him,” CNN quoted Spicer as saying. Pressed for what evidence exists, Spicer said Trump “believed that for a while based on studies and information he has”. —IANS

spelling error as he said ‘Amoung’ rather than among. It was quickly deleted and reissued just moments later. Trump will sign the executive order — directing federal funds to be focused on creating the structure — during an appearance at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), a White House official told CNN. He is also expected to sign several executive orders dealing with visas and immigrants. The move would target cities where local leaders refuse to hand over illegal immigrants for deportation.

Trump’s orders were expected to involve restricting access to the US for refugees and some visa holders from Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen, according to the reports. Trump’s first order will be to begin construction of the border wall, as well as take steps to repair existing areas of fencing along the frontier between the US and Mexico. The order will also include a mandate to increase staff at Customs and Border Protection by 5,000 and alleviate the flood of migrants fleeing violence in Central America, CNN reported.

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump threatened to “send in the Feds” to deal with the “carnage” in Chicago if the city did not fix the problem, his tweet said. “If Chicago doesn’t fix the horrible “carnage” going on, 228 shootings in 2017 with 42 killings (up 24 per cent from 2016), I will send in the Feds!” the President said, ABC news reported. Trump took a bleak outlook on the city and the thousands of shootings that took place there in 2016 alone. During his rallies, he frequently spoke of what he described as the “horrors of the inner cities”. In 2016, there were some 3,550 shooting incidents and 762 murders in Chicago. On January 2, days before his inauguration, Trump came down

heavily on Mayor Rahm Emanuel. “Chicago murder rate is record setting ... in 2016. If Mayor can’t do it he must ask for Federal help!” the then President-elect was quoted. It was, however, not immediately clear what prompted or what exactly Trump meant in his tweet by “send in the Feds”. The number of murders in 2016 was the highest since 1996, which was a 57 per cent increase since 2015. On new year alone 28 people were shot in the city. Emanuel in his turn criticized the President and his continued focus on the size of his inaugural crowd. “This is unsolicited advice: You didn’t get elected to debate the crowd size at your inaugural,” Emanuel said, according to the Chicago Tribune. —IANS

Officials said Trump would wait until later in the week to take action on visas and refugees, potentially, reported CNN. An order being prepared for Trump’s signature includes the drastic measure of suspending the entire refugee programme for four months in an attempt to gauge which country’s migrants pose the least risk for US national security.

Trump to keep James Comey as FBI head IANS, WASHINGTON

F

BI Director James Comey will continue to lead the USs top law-enforcement agency, a media report has said. Comey has informed his senior staff that President Donald Trump asked him to stay on, despite the criticism he received for the way he managed the Hillary Clinton e-mail probe during the 2016 election, New York Post reported. James Comey was accused of trying to influence the election in Trump’s favor. Just after Trump’s surprise victory in November, the then Presidentelect said during a TV interview that he wasn’t sure if he would keep

Comey on. But the newly minted President recently told Comey that he “loves

him” and called him a “great guy,” the Post quoted a law-enforcement source as saying.

Trump reportedly told Comey that he didn’t “want him going anywhere”. Comey dropped the news on his senior staff during a video conference earlier, saying that he “was not leaving”. He was sworn in as the head of the FBI by former President Barack Obama in 2013. Comey was, however, reported earlier to be navigating through rough terrain with the new president. The FBI opened formal investigations into Trump’s ex-campaign manager, Paul Manafort, and his ties to Russia, according to the New York Times. The director of the FBI serves a 10-year term, to keep the position insulated from political changes in government.

rime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump discussed the security situation in South and Central Asia during their phone conversation night and resolved that India and US will “stand shoulder to shoulder” to fight terrorism, the White House said. Strengthening defense partnership was among topics that came up during their talks about furthering cooperation between them, according to the White House. “Trump emphasized that the US considers India a true friend and partner in addressing challenges

around the world,” the White House said. This was reflected in the fact that conversation between the leaders of the world’s two greatest democracies came before Trump had talked to leaders of important allies like Britain, Germany and Japan or powers like China and Russia since formally taking office last week. During his campaign, Trump praised Modi as a “great leader” and sought a kinship of ideas with him as a “pro-growth leader” when he attended a rally organized by the Republican Hindu Coalition (RHC) in New Jersey in October. He added that after his election India would have true friend in the

White House. White House said that Trump invited Modi to visit him later this year. President Pranab Mukherjee invited Trump to visit India when he congratulated him on assuming the presidency. The real estate investor-turned-politician has visited India several times for business. Another topic Trump and Modi discussed was strengthening the partnership in the economy, but the statement did not give any details of what they might have discussed. Modi and Trump have parallel priorities of job creation, especially through manufacturing, and increasing investments which may appear headed for a collision.

Priyanka scoffs at Katiyar’s remarks

W

ith the name of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra featuring in the list of 40 “star campaigners” released by the Congress, she is all set to campaign for the party candidates in Uttar Pradesh state assembly elections. Party sources also said that the theme for joint campaign of the Congress and the Samajwadi Party will be Apne UP Ke Ladke. The theme seeks to project UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi as against the “outsiders” — Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit shah. This is first time that Priyanka will be electioneering in the state,

NEW DELHI: BJP MP Vinay Katiyar on Wednesday courted controversy for his alleged sexist remarks against Congress star campaigner Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, inviting flak from her and the Congress over the comments that she said exposed the “BJP’s mindset”. Katiyar’s comments, which came a day after Priyanka was named

Only a few days back, Priyanka successfully stitched up an alliance with the ruling SP in the state. The Congress got 105 seats and the SP 298. She will be campaigning in Amethi, Rae Bareli, Chandauli, Ghaziabad and Saharanpur.

among the Congress’ star campaigners for poll-bound Uttar Pradesh, attracted condemnation from his own party as well as the Delhi Commission for Women. The BJP leader said his party had “prettier star campaigners” (than Priyanka). “It doesn’t make any difference. We have far prettier women, heroines as star campaigners,” he said.

The Congress said the party workers want her to play a “larger role” in politics. “There is a huge amount of support for her which is obvious. When her role is decided, you’ll be informed,” a Congress spokesperson said.

Goa: AAP puts plastic cards on electoral table IANS, PANAJI

F

or a party known to take regular swipes at demonetisation and the government’s backing for a cashless economy, the AAP for once appears to have placed its faith in plastic. One of the unique innovations tried by the AAP in the upcoming assembly election in Goa is handing out rectangular plastic cards, which the party claims guarantees delivery of its promises it has made to voters. In Goa, the card, which features an inky blue sky and coconut palms, after the typical imagery the coastal tropical state evokes, also has

mugshots of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Chief Ministerial candidate Elvis Gomes, both

wearing the trademark party caps, and of course the ubiquitous party symbol, the broom.

The card also has a written guarantee signed by Gomes, which reads: “I, Elvis Gomes, Chief Ministerial candidate of Aam Aadmi Party, Goa, guarantee AAP social welfare schemes to you and your family.” Gomes told IANS that the need for the assurance card was felt because of the series of U-Turns committed by the Congress and the BJP whenever they ruled the state. This, he said, had dented the faith of the voters vis-a-vis election promises. “Goa’s politicians have gone back on their promises and words so many times that they are called Uturn politicians,” Gomes said.

Mexican President

Nieto may cancel US visit

Pena Nieto did not mention whether he would cancel the meeting; the future steps would be taken in consultation with Mexican lawmakers IANS, MEXICO CITY

M

exican President Enrique Pena Nieto is considering scrapping his visit to the US as President Donald Trump signed an order to construct a wall between the two nations. President Donald Trump’s action to sign the executive order to beef up America’s deportation force and construction of the wall, were enough to prompt Pena Nieto to consider scrapping his plans to visit the White House, the New York Times quoted Mexican officials as saying. In a video message delivered over Twitter this week, Pena Nieto did not mention whether he would cancel the meeting, saying future steps would be taken in consultation with Mexican lawmakers, the New York Times reported.

Moscow ready to fix ties with the US MOSCOW: Normalizing ties with the US will take time, but Russia is ready to begin the process, the Russian Foreign Minister said during in the State Duma here. Addressing members of Russia’s lower chamber of Parliament, Sergey Lavrov said it would take time and serious effort to recover from the damage that RussoAmerican ties suffered under the administration of former president Barack Obama, Efe news. “But, as pointed out by President Vladmir Putin, we are willing to do our part to repair relations in the interest of our people and in the interest of global security and stability,” Lavrov said. Russia’s top diplomat said his country approved of newly elected US President Donald Trump’s stance with regard to the normalization of bi-lateral relations. Russia hoped Trump would maintain his intentions of concentrating on America’s domestic problems without straying into the internal affairs of other countries, Lavrov said. Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.

Pena Nieto reiterated his commitment to protect the interests of Mexico and its people. He chided Washington’s move to continue with the wall construction. “I regret and condemn the US’ decision to continue with the con-

struction of a wall that, far from uniting us, divides us,” the Mexican President said. Trump during his election campaign called Mexican immigrants rapists, threatened to deport millions of them and promised to

build a wall to keep others out. Now, the perceived insults endured during the campaign have turned into action. According to the New York Times, decades of friendly relations between the US and Mexico — on matters involving trade, security and migration — seemed to be unravelling. On Twitter, Trump’s action was referred to by politicians and historians as “an offense to Mexico”, a “slap in the face” and a “monument to lies”. “It is an unprecedented moment for the bilateral relationship,” said Genaro Lozano, a professor at the Iberoamerican University here. “In the 19th century, we fought a war with the US. Now we find ourselves in a low-intensity war, a commercial one over Nafta and an immigration war due to the measures he just announced,” he said.

‘Sino-US cooperation to continue’ IANS, WASHINGTON

C

hina and the US are expected to continue cooperation under the new US administration led by President Donald Trump, the Chinese envoy to the US has said. Although the Trump administration has yet to formulate its China policy, the general trend of China-US cooperation cannot be reversed as it is “the only right choice” for both countries, Xinhua

news agency quoted Cui Tiankai as saying. He was speaking on the sidelines of a Lunar New Year reception at the Chinese Embassy.

Cui noted that such cooperation is in the interests of both China and the US, the world’s two top economies and permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. He also expressed the hope that the two sides can maintain the multi-layer dialogue and exchange mechanisms, which were created in the past years. The Chinese envoy listed a range of areas where the two countries can and deepen cooperation.

SHORT TAKES Spanish version of White House website removed MADRID: Spanish government ministers criticized the removal of the Spanish language version of the official White House website (www.whitehouse.gov) days after Donald Trump was sworn in as the 45th US President. The Spanish version was replaced by a message “Sorry the page you’re looking for can’t be found” this week to the surprise of the 50 million Spanish speakers in the US and the 700 million Spanish speakers worldwide, Xinhua news agency reported. Spanish Minister for Education, Culture and Sports Inigo Mendez de Vigo said the move was “not good news,” while insisting it would “neither detain nor threaten the unstoppable diffusion” of the Spanish language. “The knowledge and use of different languages in society is something that strengthens a country,” he added.

Syrian ‘Twitter girl’ pens a letter to Trump ISTANBUL: Bana Alabed, the seven-year-old girl whose tweets from Aleppo gave devastating insights into the Syrian war, has pleaded with US President Donald Trump to “do something for the children in Syria” in an open letter. Bana amassed hundreds of thousands of followers for her messages from war-torn Aleppo sent with the help of her mother, Fatemah. The family was evacuated to Turkey in December during the mass evacuations, and is now living in Turkey. “You must do something for the children of Syria because they are like your children and deserve peace like you,” she wrote. Her mother said Bana wrote the letter days before Trump’s inauguration, because “she has seen Trump many times on the TV”, BBC said. —IANS

China bans export for military use to North Korea IANS, BEIJING

C

hina has banned the export of materials and technologies that could be used to build military equipment to North Korea, ranging from components to develop nuclear missiles, to video cameras and sensors, the media reported. The Chinese Commerce Ministry, in conjunction with other government agencies, released a list late, detailing the goods and technologies Chinese companies cannot sell to North Korea, Efe news reported this week. The ministry explained that the publication of this list aligns with

the UN’s latest sanctions against the Pyongyang regime in response to its nuclear tests.

Local analysts interpreted this move as China’s attempt to prove that it was complying with UN

resolutions following criticism from US President Donald Trump and his candidate for Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. The list covers products that can be used for civilian purposes but also have military use. The inventory includes submarines, materials and equipment for developing nuclear missiles and chemical weapons, rocket-related or drone-related software, highspeed video cameras, sensors, telecommunications devices and lasers. The ban on Chinese exports could damage the North Korean defense industry, which depends on foreign countries for development.

Pai appointed to head US FCC Ajit Pai will be the Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), he announced his appointment on Twitter ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK

P

resident Donald Trump has appointed Ajit Pai to head the powerful US communications regulatory agency, becoming the third Indian American picked for key positions in his administration. Pai, 44, will be the Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the federal authority regulating cellphone spectrum and services, radio, television, phone, internet and satellite and cable. Pai announced his appointment

Indian woman injured in Australia MELBOURNE: An Indian woman was among seven pedestrians critically injured here after being run over by an Australian man driving a stolen car, the media said. Five people died and 31 were injured in a tragedy this week. Nethra Krishnamurthy, a technologist at an IT company, was on her way to office after breastfeeding her eight-month-old boy at a day care when she was hit by the car, The Age reported. According to her friends and colleagues, she went into a coma but woke up on January 23 and was responsive, the daily said. Krishnamurthy, who had returned from maternity leave last week, sustained serious injuries including deep lacerations to her head, a punctured lung, damage to her liver and kidneys as well as broken ribs and three fractures to her spine. She remains in a critical but stable condition with her husband by her bedside. The couple have no family in Australia and so their baby is now in the care of colleagues. A fundraising page has been set up by her workplace to help her recovery. “Given the severity of her injuries, Nethra will remain in hospital for quite some time and following this will have a long road to recovery, both physically and psychologically,” colleague Tanvir Chowdhury was quoted as saying. —IANS

on Twitter, saying he was told of it this week and that “it is a deeply humbling honor”. He added that he would work to bring the benefits of the digital age to all Americans. The FCC also has a major role in controlling the content of television and radio, a sensitive issue given Trump’s contentious relations with the media. The agency sets and enforces certain norms on content like obscenity in TV and conditions like having a certain amount of local news content for stations to keep their licences.

Underscoring its importance, Representative Frank Pallone said: “By some measures, the FCC oversees approximately one sixth of the US economy.” Nikki Haley, Trump’s nominee for the cabinet-level post of US ambassador to the UN, is scheduled to be recommended by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for approval by the entire Senate for the job. Another Trump nominee is Seema Verma, who is to head the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the agency for government health insurance programs.

Already a member of the FCC, Pai will succeed Tom Wheeler, a Democrat, who quit recently. A free enterprise advocate, Pai has been a critic of the functioning of the FCC and clashed with its Democratic Party leadership. Recently he took issue with an FCC report that questioned the

legality of offerings given free of charge for people to access online music, videos and other content. He has said he wants to end net neutrality, which prevents internet service providers from giving special preferences to certain web sites or accept payment from a web service to give it priority or better access.

T

he US Senate has confirmed Nikki Haley to the cabinet-level position of ambassador to the UN, marking a major milestone in Indian American ascendancy in US politics. Haley, who has said she would work to reform the UN, was nominated to the position by President Donald Trump and won the support of an overwhelming Senate majority cutting across the political divide. She got 96 votes with only four diehard Democrats voting against her. The post of the US ambassador to the UN is considered the second highest-profile diplomatic job after the Secretary of State and

dum from opponents, according to reports. Pravind Jugnauth, 55, is the leader of the main political

party Militant Socialist Movement (MSM), and had already formed his ministerial cabinet after receiving an appointment letter from President Ameenah Gurib-Fakim. The police rejected a request from the Labor Party to hold a sitin protest. Labour leaders urged their supporters to wear black to denounce the move. “This is a black day for Mauritius. The Jugnauth family is turning the Island into a ‘Banana Republic,” former Prime Minister and Labour Party leader Navin Ramgoolam said.

Cardin, a senior Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (SFRC), said Haley represents the best in the American story of immigration. The daughter of Indian immigrants in South Carolina, she faced discrimination as a child but overcame it, rising to become the Governor of the state, he said. Haley has no diplomatic or foreign policy experience. Chris Coons, one of the four Democrats to oppose her, said he was against her appointment because she lacked the “high level of expertise on international affairs”. Cardin countered this by saying that she had the skills to persuade others and build coalitions, an asset to further US policies and interests at the UN.

I

ndia’s military might, its cultural diversity and achievements in various areas were showcased at a grand parade here as the nation celebrated its 68th Republic Day with the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan as the Chief Guest. The country’s main celebration took place at Rajpath here where India’s Who’s Who assembled to watch a 90-minute parade that also focused on the government’s Make in India initiative to boost manufacturing. Amid fears of possible terror attacks, a tight security blanket was thrown around the national capital including the venue. Nearly 60,000 police and paramilitary personnel were deployed across Delhi. Despite rain-bearing clouds and a drizzle, thousands turned up on both sides of Rajpath to watch the grand march that wound its way over eight kilometres from Raisina Hill, with the imposing Rashtrapati Bhavan in the backdrop, to the 17th century Red Fort. The day began with President Pranab Mukherjee unfurling the Indian flag at the Rashtrapati Bhavan and Prime Minister Narendra Modi paying tributes to the fallen soldiers at the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate. Modi welcomed the President and the Chief Guest, Sheikh Mohammed, the son of the UAE’s founding president. President Mukherjee, comman-

Kerala ‘thought leader’: Governor THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: On the occasion of the 68th Republic Day celebrations on Thursday here, Kerala Governor P. Sathasivam called the state the “thought leader” for the rest of India. “Although our state is small, accounting for hardly three per cent of India’s population, yet Kerala has always been a ‘thought leader’ for the rest of India with its high literacy, progressive ideas and globally acclaimed movements,” said Governor Sathasivam in his Republic Day address here at the Central stadium. He said Kerala is now on the path of rebuilding itself as one of the most advanced societies in the world, with a mission called “Nava-keralam”, which focuses on four key areas, namely, education, agriculture and environment.

BRIEFS Pomp, pageantry in Karnataka BENGALURU: The 68th Republic Day was celebrated in Karnataka with pomp and pageantry amid tight security. Karnataka Governor Vajubahia Vala unfurled the Tricolor at the Field Marshal Manekshaw parade ground in the city center here and joined hundreds of people in singing the national anthem in tandem, in the state capital. Before delivering the R-Day address, Vala went around the sprawling ground in an open jeep for the guard of honor and received the salute from the armed forces. A helicopter showered rose petals over the venue.

Led by Lt Col Abood Musabeh Abood Musabeh Alghfeli, it comprised of the UAE Presidential Guard, the Air Force, the Navy, the Army and 35 musicians. It was followed by military and paramilitary contingents, including mounted troops from the 61st Cavalry and mechanized columns. Martial music belted out by military bands filled the air as soldiers drawn from some of the finest military units marched with clockwork precision. Paramilitary personnel and Delhi

Police also walked, step to step. Making their debut on the occasion were India’s Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas and Airborne Early Warning and Control System (AEW&C), both developed indigenously. Despite overcast conditions, three of the fighter jets flew at a height of 300 meters from the ground at a speed of 780 km per hour in ‘VIC’ formation, leaving the spectators in awe. Developed by the Aeronautical Development Agency and produced by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, Tejas, as a fourth generation aircraft, can fly at 1,350 km per hour and is comparable to the world’s best fighters, including

French Mirage 2000, American F16 and Swedish Gripen. The elite counter-terrorism force, National Security Guard (NSG), also made its maiden appearance with a contingent of 60 commandos in black overalls and armed gear giving the ceremonial salute to President Mukherjee. The other commandos were on seven vehicles. After the armed forces came state tableaux, displaying India’s oneness amid a rich diversity. Haryana’s tableau, dedicated to the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ campaign, came first. The Jammu and Kashmir tableau was clad in white, depicting the popular winter sports destination of Gulmarg.

MUMBAI: Maharashtra celebrated the 68th Republic Day with Governor C.V. Rao unfurling the Tricolor at the main state function, taking the salute at a ceremonial parade at the historic Shivaji Park here on Thursday. Present on the occasion were Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, legislative assembly Speaker Haribhau Bagde, Mumbai Mayor Snehal Ambekar, top officials of the armed forces, the police, members of the diplomatic corps stationed in Mumbai, citizens and other dignitaries and invitees. Addressing the gathering, Governor Rao urged the people to reaffirm the commitment to strengthen the democratic values enshrined in the Constitution and rededicate ourselves for the all-round development of the country.

‘Tolerance still being put to test’ Country’s pluralistic culture is being put to test by vested interests, says President Pranab Mukherjee in his R-Day address IANS, NEW DELHI

T

he country’s pluralistic culture and tolerance were still being put to test by vested interests, said President Pranab Mukherjee, while noting that the time was ripe for a debate on the need for simultaneous polls to the Lok Sabha and the state assemblies. In his address on the eve of 68th Republic Day, the President said that happiness and well being of people should be touch stones of public policy and “inclusive innovation” a way of life. The President said more than the unison of ideas, a healthy democracy calls for conformity to the values of tolerance, patience and respect

for others and these must reside in every Indian’s hearts and minds to inculcate in them a temperament of understanding and responsibility. He also said that demonetization carried out by the government on November 8 last year may have led to temporary slowdown of economic activity but it will improve transparency of economy as more transactions become cashless. The President, who assumed office in 2012 and delivered his last address of the present term, outlined nine points to “work harder than ever” in order to redeem promises made to people. “We have to work harder because our pluralistic culture and tolerance are still being put to test by vested

interests. Reason and moderation should be our guide in dealing with such situations,” he said. He said people have to work hard to keep at bay the “dark forces” of terrorism. “These forces have to be dealt with firmly and decisively. The forces inimical to our interests cannot be allowed to grow.” Mukherjee said India’s pluralism and social, cultural, linguistic and religious diversity are its greatest strength and “values of tolerance and respect for others must reside in minds of every Indian”. He said India’s tradition has

always celebrated the “argumentative” Indian, not the “intolerant” Indian and multiple views, thoughts and philosophies have competed with each other peacefully for centuries. The President said a wise and discerning mind is necessary for democracy to flourish, and expressing concern over disruptions in legislatures, called for a collective effort to bring focus back on debate and decision-making. He also said “time was also ripe for a constructive debate on electoral reforms” and “a return to the practice of the early decades after

independence when elections to Lok Sabha and state assemblies were held simultaneously”. Mukherjee said that India’s journey since Independence has been “eventful, sometimes painful, but at most times, exhilarating” but “we will have to learn to adjust our sails, quickly and deftly, to the winds of change”. Noting that three generations of citizens, born in Independent India, do no carry baggage of colonial past, he said it sometimes makes it easy to for them to take freedom for granted.

Honor for personnel of surgical strikes

C

hildren who won the National Bravery Awards participated in the 68th Republic Day Parade at Rajpath here on January 26 to the loud cheers from the spectators. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had presented the National Bravery Awards to 25 children, four of them posthumously, from different parts of the country. Among the award winners were 15-year-old Sumit Mamgain from Uttrakhand who fought a leopard to save his cousin, and nine-yearold Sonu Mali from Rajasthan who saved his classmate from a four-foot long black cobra. Tejasweeta Pradhan and Shivani Gond from Darjeeling showed immense courage in fearlessly helping the police and an NGO in uncovering an international sex racket leading to the arrest of the mastermind in Delhi. Four children received the awards posthumously, including eight-year-old Tarh Peju from Arunachal Pradesh who sacrificed her life in an attempt to save two of her friends from drowning.

Lalhriatpuii from Mizoram sacrificed her life in an effort to save her cousin from a car accident. Tushar Verma from Chhattisgarh lost his life as he tried to extinguish a fire in his neighbour’s shed. Roluahpuii from Mizoram sacrificed her life in a bold effort of saving two girls from drowning.

The National Bravery Award Scheme was initiated by the Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW) in 1957 to give recognition to children who distinguish themselves by performing outstanding deeds of bravery and meritorious service. “Their deeds of bravery show

these children’s decisiveness and courage,” the Prime Minister said during the felicitation ceremony in the capital. Interacting with the awardees, he said: “You must ensure that this award does not become the end of your life’s purpose, but rather should only mark the beginning.”

NEW DELHI: A total of 23 soldiers from Indian Army’s Special Forces that went across the border for the surgical strike have been awarded gallantry medals, including a Kirti Chakra, on occasion of the 68th Republic Day. Major Rohit Suri of 4 Para has been awarded the Kirti Chakra, the second highest peacetime gallantry award. The Kirti Chakra was also awarded posthumously to Lance Havildar Prem Bahadur Resmi Magar of Third Battalion of the First Gorkha Rifles, killed while fighting terrorists along the Line of Control in Tangdhar, Jammu & Kashmir.

He said that bravery is a state of mind; a healthy body helps, but the prime moving force is the mind. He further added, “we need to make the mind strong. The adulation and fame that you are getting, should not become an obstacle to the future progress.”

uperstar Shah Rukh Khan’s promotional train journey from Mumbai to Delhi for his film Raees took a controversial turn when a person at the Vadodara railway station died and two others got injured in the fan frenzy, following which BJP leaders slammed the actor. Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has ordered a probe into the matter. BJP leaders Kailash Vijayvargiya and Manoj Tiwari commented on the incident. Vijayvargiya, a BJP General Secretary, compared Shah Rukh to underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. Tiwari demanded that the actor compensate the family of the deceased. Prabhu has directed the Director General of Railway Protection Force to investigate the matter and take stern action against any lapse.

‘Raees’: It’s an immersive SRK entertainer

I

t’s the same old wine — hooch wine — in a not-so-new battle, and I do mean battle. Prohibition in Gujarat is the playground for this pulsating saga of twisted morality. As the good policeman Majmudar(Nawazuddin Siddiqui) wages an all-out war against hooch seller Raees Khan (Shah Rukh Khan). What emerges from the smoke, fire and ashes is a kitschy 1980sstyle potboiler that tells the story of a gangster’s protege who grows into a Robin Hoodlum, the dogooder whose Ammi (Sheeba Chadha, so brilliant and yet such a fugitive figure in the screenplay) teaches him that no job is too small

or petty. Taking that maternal advice a bit too seriously (probably uttered by the short-lived Ammijaan in an unguarded moment

after she may have heard it being said by Alok Nath), Raees spends the next 40 years of his life and two hours of ours, selling illicit liquor

and killing opponents with an impunity that defines death by Dawoodian ideology. There is plenty of gratuitous action, rapid fire movement and swift reflexive responses to violent impulses. But Raees never succeeds in getting its act all together. It’s all too hazy, scattered and sketchy, except when Nawazuddin walks in as the ‘good cop’ who vows he will get Raees by hook or crook.

‘VIP 2’: Kajol plays suave businesswoman CHENNAI: In her comeback appearance in Tamil filmdom after a decade, actress Kajol will be seen playing a sophisticated businesswoman in Dhanush’s upcoming Tamil actiondrama VIP 2, a source has revealed. “She plays a suave businesswoman, and there will be different shades to her character. She has already joined the sets and has already shot for a week,” a source from the film’s unit told IANS. The film is the sequel to “Vela Illa Pattathari”, and it’s being directed by Soundarya Rajinikanth. Asked if the rumors about Kajol playing the antagonist are true, the source said, “Her character is such that she will lock horns with Dhanush, but that doesn’t qualify to make her the antagonist.

“Audiences are in for a surprise when they watch the film.” The film will be predominantly shot in Pune, apart from a few places in southern India. Dhanush’s Wunderbar Films is bankrolling the project.

COMMUNITY NEWS / east coast okayed as TV ASIA’s H R Shah given Padma Shri NikkiUNHaley ambassador 2

FRIDAY, 27 JANUARY, 2017

BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- TV ASIA has announced that its chairman & CEO, H.R. Shah, has been conferred one of India’s highest civilian honors, the Padma Shri, for 2017. Shah, who is among only three recipients of the honor from the United States this year, is being presented the award in the category of Literature & EducationJournalism. The President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, is scheduled to present the honors in March/April at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. Shah, who has lived in the United States for 46 years, is originally from Bahadarpur, Gujarat. He is also chairman of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (US), an institution dedicated to literature, culture, education, music and arts. He has devoted his life to community service as well as fostering close relations between India and the US through his many endeavors and enterprises over the years, including TV ASIA. When informed of the decision, Shah reacted: “I cannot believe it and am still trying to fathom this wonderful news. I am deeply humbled, honored and overjoyed

that the Republic of India has decided to confer on me the Padma Shri. “It is recognition of my work for more than 35 years and I am grateful to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government as well as the people of India for rewarding me with this high civilian honor. I am also grateful to my family, friends and

well-wishers who have supported me all these years.” Shah added: “I look forward to receiving the Padma Shri in New Delhi later this year and rededicate myself to helping India and the US further their close relations, as well as to promote India’s rich culture and heritage.”

Trump set to order immigration curbs BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC – President Donald Trump is expected to order the construction of his long-promised wall along the US-Mexico border and take other actions on immigration, a cornerstone of his presidential campaign. Trump is planning a visit to the Department of Homeland Security, where he will roll out executive actions on immigration. Staying true to form, Trump took to Twitter on January 14 night, and posted, “Big day planned on National Security among many other things, we will build the wall!” Trump’s push for a border wall started with his campaign announcement back in June 2015. “I would build a Great Wall, and nobody builds walls better than me, believe me, and I’ll build them very inexpensively. I will build a great, great wall on our southern border and I will have Mexico pay for that wall, mark my words,” Trump said at the time. His wall proposal was a rallying cry for both his supporters and opponents. His supporters saw a candidate speaking plainly about border security, while his opponents called the plan divisive. The order will be signed the same day the Mexican foreign minister, Luis Videgaray, arrives

in Washington prior to a trip by his country’s President at the end of the month. Trump also is expected to move forward with plans to curb funding of sanctuary cities that don’t arrest or detain immigrants living in the US illegally, which could cost individual jurisdictions millions of dollars. Sources said that Trump, later this week, may order the suspension of entries to the US from Iraq, Iran, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, Sudan and Libya. The order bans those who engaged in bigotry, honor killings, violence against women

and persecuted other religions from entering the country. Other executive actions expected soon include bolstering border patrol agents by 5,000 and ending what Republicans have argued is a catch-and-release system at the border. The sources said Trump will call for a victims’ advocacy office for victims of crimes by illegal immigrants and increased overall transparency. Currently, some immigrants caught crossing the border illegally are given notices to report back to immigration officials at a later date.

Man gets 4 yrs for role in credit card scam BY A STAFF WRITER RENTON,NJ -- An Iselin man will serve nearly four years in prison for his part in a $200 million credit-card scam, one of the largest-ever investigated by the US Department of Justice. Babar Qureshi, 63, was sentenced to 46 months after previously pleading guilty to the bank fraud. Qureshi was one of several suspects charged in February 2013 in a conspiracy to create more than 7,000 fake identities, which were then used to obtain tens of thousands of credit cards.

BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC -- The Senate confirmed President Donald Trump’s pick for US ambassador to the United Nations by a decisive margin on January 24 as Republican-led committees paved the way for three more of his Cabinet nominees to be approved just days into the new administration. South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley won strong support for the UN post despite her lack of foreign policy experience. Senators voted 96-4 on Haley’s nomination. Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee, the Republican chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, said the Indian American governor is a proven leader who will be a ‘fierce advocate’ at the UN for American interests. But not everyone was sold. Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., said Haley didn’t convince him that she’ll serve effectively. The US ambassador to the international body should be an expert on international affairs, Coons said, “not someone who will be learning on the job.” A Senate vote is expected soon now on Trump’s choice for secretary of state, former Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson. The vote on Haley capped a day when the GOP-led panels endorsed Trump’s choices to lead the Transportation, Housing, and Commerce departments. Yet, congressional Republicans criticized Democrats for not moving quickly enough on all of the President’s selections.

T

The scammers created false documents and credit profiles and inflated the creditworthiness of those identities before

running up huge loans. Habib Chaudhry was one of 18 people first charged by the FBI in February, 2013 in connection with what prosecutors said was one of their largest credit card fraud cases ever. Scammers across the country helped maintain 1,800 mailing addresses used in conjunction with the fraudulently obtained cards. Qureshi’s role was to run up charges at merchants on the scam, who would pay Qureshi a portion of the charge in cash. Qureshi then used phony bank accounts to cover his tracks, spending the cash on personal expenses, including his mortgage.

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Telugu Association of Greater Chicago (TAGC), which has been promoting the rich heritage of the Telugu culture and language, kick-started 2017 with a mega event with Makara Sankranti and Republic day on January 21 at HTGC Sri Rama Temple Auditorium, Lemont, Illinois. According to TAGC president Ramachandra Reddy Ade, some 1250 guests attended the event held in festival atmosphere with beautiful Bommalakoluvu under the leadership of Swetha. The event showcased several cultural activities depicting Telugu culture and traditions, including Sankranti-theme song dances and patriotic song dances, a Sri Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna concert, Bambola Jambha & Maa Ayana super comedy skit, etc with 350 participants. Apart from charity work on bone marrow transplants for cancer patients, a debate was held on impact of social media on kids. A tasty and traditional dinner was sponsored by Bawachi Indian Restaurant Naperville with Kovapuri sweet sponsored by Satya Kondapalli.

Illegal cigarette packs found at 3 NY stores

BY A STAFF WRITER TATEN ISLAND, NY -- The city wants to shut down three Staten Island delis after the police found hundreds of packs of untaxed cigarettes for sale inside. The Old Town Deli and Grocery in Old Town, Zenia Deli in West Brighton and VIP V&G Corp. in Castleton Corners could be shuttered after the police bought packs of untaxed cigarettes inside and arrested four people over the summer. The NYPD filed separate documents in Staten Island Supreme Court earlier this month to close each deli for at least a year under the nuisance abatement law. From June until July 2016, undercover officers and informants bought packs of Newport cigarettes from the stores that either had no stamps or ones from Virginia on them. The police then executed search warrants on each of the spots, confiscated cigarettes from the stores and arrested workers. On July 13, officers executed a search warrant at VIP V&G, at 2003 Victory Blvd., and found more than 150 packs of untaxed cigarettes inside. The police arrested Salim Khalfaoui, 43, and charged him with possession or sale of unstamped cigarettes. That same day, officers carried out a search

Rupen Shah to serve as judge in Virginia

Rupen Shah

BY A STAFF WRITER UGUSTA, VA -- Rupen Shah, an Indian American prosecutor who was the chief deputy of the Augusta County Commonwealth’s Attorney Office in Virginia, has been confirmed as a judge of the 25th Judicial District. Making the announcement on January 19, the local assembly delegation noted that Shah is the first Indian American judge elected in the Commonwealth. “It was an honor for us to put forward for consideration and to vote for the confirmation” of Shah, the delegation said in a statement, adding, Shah’s “commitment to serve the people of the Commonwealth in this manner is to be commended.” Shah’s six-year term will begin from February 1. Shah has worked as a prosecutor in Augusta County for more than 20 years. In 2015, Shah was named a ‘Leader of the Law,’ an award from Virginia Lawyers Media that recognizes attorneys for serving their community, changing the law, and improving Virginia’s legal system. Shah said at that time he was proud of the work he has done to change laws for synthetic marijuana and making financial institutions more open to law enforcement. Shah has served on the executive committee and council of the Virginia State Bar and also as Chair of the Diversity Conference of the Virginia State Bar. He was recognized by the State Bar as a local leader of the year 2009 and also served as president of the Augusta County Bar Association from 2008-2009. Shah, who has a law degree from New York’s Syracuse University, founded the nonprofit Valley Children’s Center, which helps law enforcement and Child Protective Services workers interview abused and neglected children. The Indian American also has extensive experience in teaching law.

packs of untaxed cigarettes inside the Old Town Deli at 203 Old Town Road. Salah Al Lahabi, 28, and Sheib Al Zawquari, 24, were both arrested and charged with two counts of possession or sale of unstamped cigarettes, a spokeswoman for the NYPD said.

Indian doc is charged with drug trafficking BY A STAFF WRITER ERN, NC-An Indian American physician in New Bern, North Carolina, has been charged with 31 counts of federal offenses, including drug trafficking and money laundering. Kumar’s home was searched by authorities following the issuance of a warrant in June last year where Craven County sheriff ’s officials found controlled substances at a trafficking level. Uber driver held for killing pedestrian BY A STAFF WRITER ACKSON HEIGHTS, NY -- An Uber driver was arrested after he struck and killed a man crossing an intersection on 37th Avenue. The police said Henry Boimel, 67, was walking on the south side of 76th Street and 37th Avenue when he was struck by Dinesh Bhattarai, 45, who was making a right turn onto 76th Street around 7:29 pm. The victim was taken to Elmhurst Hospital with severe head injuries and was later pronounced dead. Bhattarai is an Uber driver but he was not using the app at the time of the crash, according to a spokeswoman for the company. He lives on 76th Street and was arrested and charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian in a marked crosswalk. Pedestrian safety on Jackson Heights’ streets, particularly the congested 37th Avenue, was brought up multiple times at th recent 115th Precinct Community Council meeting.

J

Many people asked for increased enforcement on 37th, 35th and 34th avenues — fearing more fatalities. Officials from the NYPD’s 115th

Precinct said at the meeting that they would address the complaints with a shift in where they assigned traffic enforcement officers.

BY A STAFF WRITER ANHATTAN, NY -- A group of ethics attorneys, including Indian American Supreme Court litigator Deepak Gupta, who is working on the case, filed a lawsuit January 23 accusing President Donald Trump of allowing his businesses to accept payments from foreign governments. The allegation is a violation of the US Constitution. Gupta, who has three cases pending before the court, said the lawsuit would allege that the Constitution’s Emoluments Clause forbids payments to Trump’s businesses. It will seek a court order forbidding Trump from accepting such payments, Gupta added. Such payments include those from patrons at Trump hotels and golf courses; loans for his office buildings from certain banks controlled by foreign governments; and leases with tenants like the Abu Dhabi tourism office, a government enterprise. The case, filed in Manhattan federal court, is part of a wave of litigation expected to be filed against Trump by liberal advocacy groups.

Man harasses federal staff with 3,000 calls

BY A STAFF WRITER OS ANGELES, CA -- A California man who clearly had time on his hands has been found guilty of harassing federal employees with more than 3,000 expletive-filled, threatening phone calls. Kulwant (Ken) Singh Sandhu, 56, placed the calls to employees at the US Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, leaving at least 350 lengthy voice mails, officials said. Apart from the 3,000 calls made since at least 2012, he also placed hundreds of calls to another person outside government. “Many of Sandhu’s phone calls to employees and his voicemails were profanityfilled tirades that repeatedly called for SEC personnel and others to be, among other things, rounded up, publicly hanged, waterboarded, burned alive, shot and blown up with rockets and tanks,” federal prosecutor Phillip Talbert said in a statement. Sandhu was found guilty following a three-day trial. He faces up to two years in prison at his sentencing in April on each of two counts of making harassing phone calls. He also faces a fine of $250,000.

England win third ODI India having already taken an unassailable 2-0 lead after the first two games, the third win was only a consolation for the visitors who got a good assistance from the pitch

Brief scores:

IANS, KOLKATA

K

edar Jadhav and Hardik Pandya’s heroic batting efforts went in vein as England produced a disciplined performance riding on an all-round show by Ben Stokes to defeat India by five runs in a nervewracking third One Day International cricket match at the Eden Gardens here. However, with India having already taken an unassailable 2-0 lead after the first two games, it was only a consolation win for the visitors before a full house at the iconic Eden Gardens, where the track’s bounce and movement afforded good assistance to the English seamers. Put in to bat by Indian skipper Virat Kohli, England consolidated a sound start with rollicking sloghitting to post an imposing 321/8. In reply, India managed 316/9. Chasing 322 for victory, India began poorly, and despite some repairwork by Kohli and veteran Yuvraj Singh, saw half of their batsmen back in the hut with only 175 on the board. However, there followed an awesome 83-ball 104-run partnership for the sixth wicket between Kedar Jadhav and Hardik Pandya, which raised the hopes of yet another superlative Indian victory from a difficult position. But the script did not go as the way it has been going in recent times, though the match went to

Rohan-Dabrowski in Aus open quarters MELBOURNE: Indian tennis ace Rohan Bopanna and his Canadian partner Gabriela Dabrowski advanced to the mixed doubles quarter-finals of the Australian Open after beating Poland’s Lukasz Kubot and Taiwan’s Chan Yung-jan 6-4, 5-7 (103) in their second round tie. The unseeded duo of Bopanna and Dabrowski clinched the first set without much fuss but went down in the second before bouncing back in the third set tie-breaker in a match that lasted one hour and 16 minutes. Bopanna and Dabrowski will now lock horns with the winners of the match between Saisai ZhengAlexander Peya and Sania MirzaIvan Dodig. Second seeded Sania and Croatian Dodig entered the second round after beating Germany’s Laura Siegemund and Croatian Mate Pavic 7-5, 6-4. —IANS

England 321-8 in 50 overs (Jason Roy 65, Ben Stokes 57 not out, Jonny Bairstow 56; Hardik Pandya 3-49, Ravindra Jadeja 2-62). India 316-9 in 50 overs (Kedar Jadhav 90, Hardik Pandya 56, Virat Kohli 55; Ben Stokes 3/63).

the wire. After Stokes saw the back of Pandya in the 46th over, and then dismissed Ashwin in the 48th, India needed 16 off the final over. Jadhav, India’s latest find adjudged man of the series, hit pacer Chris Woakes for a six and four in the first two deliveries, to bring the requirement down to 6 off 4 balls. But Woakes fought back with two dot balls, and then got Jadhav back into the pavilion as the latter went for a slog that was gleefully accepted by Sam Billings at deep point. Now India needed six

from one ball. But Bhuvneshwar Kumar missed, and celebrations broke out in the England camp. For Stokes, who got the Man of the Match award for a cracking unbeaten half-century and bowling figures of 3/63, it was a classic reversal of fortune. It was on this same ground where he was clobbered for four back-to-back sixes by West Indies’ Carlos Brathwaite in the last over of the World T20 finals last year to fashion a Caribbean triumph. The Indian reply began on the wrong note. Ajinkya Rahane

departed as early as the second over, failing to negotiate a late swing from David Willey, and drove down the wrong line to see his off stump dislodged. Skipper Virat Kohli, played some exquisite strokes, disdainfully dispatching Chris Woakes to the fence through long leg and Mid wicket of consecutive balls, and a over later cover drove him majestically for another four. But India got another jolt a little later, as Lokesh Rahul went out to a poor shot. Coming together, Kohli and Yuvraj Singh authored a 65-run

third wicket stand. But Yuvraj - on 3 - got a painful taste of the nature of the wicket, when pacer Jake Ball surprised the left-hander with one that kicked off the wicket and hit the batsman on the chest. At the other end, Kohli was lucky to be the beneficiary of a dropped catch at long leg. The unlucky bowler was Liam Plunkett. Kohli reached his 39th half-century in 179 ODIs, needing 54 balls to get to the landmark, before the 100 of the innings came in 19 overs. But soon after India lost the big wicket of Kohli, Stokes pitched the ball up, almost inviting Kohli to go for a shot, and the intended cover drive finished as an edge to Buttler. Dhoni joined Yuvraj and the experienced pair took the score to 132/3 at the halfway stage. Yuvraj, however, was dismissed in the next over, needlessly lofting into the hands of the fielder. Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav were then involved in a 42-run stand that ended with the former top edging Ball to Buttler.

Dhoni felicitated by Kapil Dev in Kolkata IANS, KOLKATA

M

ahendra Singh Dhoni, who relinquished the One-Day International (ODI) and T20 captaincy recently, was felicitated by Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) for his contribution to Indian cricket during the innings break of the third ODI against England here. Dhoni, who led India to two World Cups — one 50-over and one T20 — along with a Champions Trophy, received a crystal trophy from India’s first 50-over World Cup-winning skipper Kapil Dev to loud cheers of “Dhoni, Cricketer MS Dhoni being felicitated by former cricketer Kapil Dev during the third ODI match between India and England at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Dhoni” from the 55,000-odd spec(Photo: Surjeet Yadav/IANS) tators. Dhoni, who rolled back time also given a shawl by CAB Joint (MCA) P.V. Shetty presenting him with a typical knock of 134 runs in Secretary Avishek Dalmiya with a memento. A short video clipping the second ODI at Cuttack, was Mumbai Cricket Association’s was shown where Dhoni’s famous

six which won the 2011 World Cup final off Sri Lanka pacer Nuwan Kulasekara was loudly applauded by the spectators. Dhoni was his usual self, accepting the awards with a light smile and then running off towards the dressing room. India, aimed for a 3-0 clean sweep, chasing a target of 322 runs for victory after England posted 321/8 in 50 overs. In his limited overs career so far, Dhoni has scored 9,110 runs in 283 ODIs at an average of 50.89 with 183 not out being his highest score. Besides, the wicket-keeper batsman has so far made 1,112 runs from 73 T20 Internationals. England produced a disciplined performance to defeat India by five runs in the third ODI match at the Eden Gardens here.

Tamil Nadu legalizes Jallikattu, police action sparks violence The law replaces the Prevention of cruelty to Animals (Tamil Nadu Amendment) Ordinance, 2017 — promulgated to amend the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act IANS, CHENNAI

SC to hear Jan 30 plea against TN law

T

amil Nadu this week passed a law legalizing Jallikattu, the bull taming sport, hours after a police crackdown on young protesters at the Marina beach here triggered widespread violence. The law replaces the Prevention of cruelty to Animals (Tamil Nadu Amendment) Ordinance, 2017 that was promulgated to amend the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act last week. The ordinance had the sanction of President Pranab Mukherjee. Chief Minister O. Panneerselavam introduced the bill in the assembly. It was passed quickly and unanimously. The law seeks to protect Jallikattu from legal challenges. This happened on a day when the dragging protest at the Marina, the country’s longest beach, turned violent after police began their crackdown following the people’s refusal to disperse. Thousands of police personnel were deployed across Chennai, a majority invading the beach and dragging away young men who had been camping there demanding legalization of Jallikattu. There was bedlam as others tried

to pull back those being taken away. Hundreds of youths, both male and female, formed a chain. Many ran towards the sea to dig in. There was a lot of slogan shouting too. Many of the protesters, after being ousted from the beach, took over neighboring streets and hurled bricks and stones at police. A large group torched several vehicles parked at the Ice House police station, sending thick clouds

Central govt withdraws notification on Jallikattu NEW DELHI: The Centre informed the Supreme Court that it was withdrawing its January 7, 2016, notification that permitted Jallikattu — the bull taming sport with some restrictions in Tamil Nadu during Pongal festival. The central government, in a gazette notification on January 8, removed bulls form the list of animals that are banned from public display thereby allowing the traditional Jallikattu or bull taming sport during the state’s Pongal festival. Besides, Jallikattu, the January 8 notification had also allowed bullock-cart races in Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra and Punjab. Just before the start of hearing on the appointment of Committee of Administrators to take over the administration of the apex cricketing body, the Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi told the bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra that gov-

ernment has decided to withdraw the notification permitting Jallikattu and bullock-cart races. As Attorney General told the court that they would be moving an application informing the court about the withdrawal of the notification, Justice Misra asked the AG to mention the issue before the bench that heard the matter. The challenge to the January 7 notification was heard by the bench comprising Justices Dipak Misra and Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman. The operation of the notification, which the Centre is now withdrawing, was stayed by the top court. The NGOs Compassion Unlimited Plus Action, the Animal Welfare Board of India, Animal Equality People for Ethical Treatment of Animals India Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organizations, and animal right activists Gauri Maulekhi challenging the notification. —IANS

of black smoke rising in the sky. As fire tenders battled the flames, police used tear gas and batons to battle the mobs. This only triggered more violence. The trouble was intense in Triplicane area near the beach. Nearly 60 people, including policemen, were injured in the violence. Around 40 people were arrested for indulging in violence. All routes leading to the Marina were quickly cordoned off, leading

to massive traffic jams in parts of Chennai. Amid vocal criticism from opposition parties and film personalities, including noted actor Kamal Haasan, that police should not have forcibly broken a peaceful protest, many protesters crawled back to the beach. Spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, himself a Tamil, appealed for calm and urged Tamils not to be swayed by anti-social elements.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court is likely to hear on January 30 a batch of petitions by animal rights groups challenging the validity of a Tamil Nadu law permitting Jallikattu. A bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra said that in all likelihood a bench comprising of him and Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman would hear the plea on the sport that is held during Pongal. Misra also referred to Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi’s mentioning about an intent of the government to withdraw a January 7 notification permitting the ancient sport. Senior counsel Abhishek Manu Singhvi also told the court that they have filed an application pointing out that the state law permitting Jallikattu was repugnant to the provisions of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. While senior counsel C.A. Sundram told the apex court that they had nothing to do with the government decision to withdraw the 2016 notification as they made substantive prayers and had nothing to do with the withdrawal. —IANS

Tamil Nadu back on track IANS, CHENNAI

L

ife in Tamil Nadu was normal after a day of violence linked to Jallikattu, but police came under attack for breaking peaceful protests and for allegedly indulging in arson. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) took suo motu cognizance of media reports that police attacked, arrested and damaged private property in order to disperse pro-Jallikattu gathering. The NHRC issued notices to the Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary, the Director General of Police and Chennai’s Commissioner of Police. “The visuals on news channels show that police set on fire huts, autos, motorcycles, vegetable shops and other properties in Chennai. The bleeding students ran for their life,” it said in a statement. “Police even entered houses and started beating people indiscriminately. The police blocked the major routes leading to Marina

Beach as well as Chennai city.” A video showing women and men in police uniform setting fire to vehicles and huts and damaging two-wheelers here on Monday went viral, sending shockwaves across the state. Police said the video was a fake. Although a small group of people remained at the Marina beach ,

life was back on track in Chennai. “Buses as well as suburban and metro trains are operating as usual,” an official told IANS. A large contingent of police remained at the Marina. The railways for the first time in recent days did not cancel any train though partial cancellations and diversion of trains were announced.
