WILL TRAVEL BAN STAY?

Doctor’s removal from United Airlines: Probe on

US court to hear Trump travel ban case in May IANS, WASHINGTON

A

US federal appeals court will consider the legality of President Donald Trumps revised executive order on travel ban at an argument session next month, it has announced. The Virginia-based 4th US Circuit Court of Appeals said it will conduct a hearing on May 8 on the federal government’s appeal of a Maryland-based judge’s ruling that blocked Trump’s March 6 ban on issuance of visas to citizens of six Muslim majority countries, Politico news reported. The session will involve 15 judges hearing the case. The 4th Circuit’s active bench has nine Democratic appointees, five Republican appointees and one judge who was nominated to the court by both a Democratic President and a Republican one. The Justice Department said it supported the session if it would not delay the case. Meanwhile, the San Franciscobased 9th Circuit Court of Appeals is considering a parallel appeal of a Hawaii-based judge’s ruling blocking the visa ban, as well as other provisions in the revised order.

The elderly doctor was violently pulled out of his seat and dragged away on the aisle of the aircraft by police.

Trump issued his first executive order for seven Muslim-majority countries.

It has expedited that appeal by the Trump administration, scheduling a three-judge panel to hear the issues in that case on May 15. Whatever decisions the two appeals courts make could be appealed further to the Supreme Court, reports Politico. Trump issued his first travel ban executive order for seven Muslim majority countries on January 27,

just a week after he was sworn in. The directive triggered protests at various airports across the country, the detention of hundreds of travelers, and confusion over the status of green card holders. On March 6, Trump issued the revised directive, revoking the old one and striking Iraq from the list of countries affected by the visa ban.

WASHINGTON: The forcible removal of an Asian doctor from an “overbooked” United Airlines flight will be probed by the US Department of Transportation (DOT), it said in a statement this week. The elderly doctor was violently pulled out of his seat and dragged away on the aisle of the aircraft by police and airline staff after he refused to give up his seat on a flight at Chicago’s O’hara International Airport last weekend. “The DoT remains committed to protecting the rights of consumers and reviewing the involuntary denied boarding of passenger(s) from United Express flight 3411 to determine whether the airline complied with the oversales rule,” Xinhua news agency cited the department as saying. The DoT response came after the incident of the Asian doctor’s removal was recorded by at least two passengers and the videos went viral on social media, sparking a national outrage. United Airlines CEO Oscar Munoz on

Monday said: “This is an upsetting event to all of us here at the United.” He said the airlines was “reaching out to this passenger” and “further address and resolve this situation”. The airline offered $1,000 for volunteers to give up their seats on the Chicago to Louisville, Kentucky, flight to accommodate four of its own employees on the fully-booked flight, according to the airline. When no one came forward, the airline staff told four people, who they said were picked by a computer, to leave the plane, according to passengers. One of them, the doctor, said he could not because he had to attend to patients the next morning. Airline staff then called the Chicago aviation police to remove him. The videos showed police dragging him from his seat, injuring his face, throwing him on the floor and dragging him along the aisle by his arms, while his glasses slid down his face and his shirt rode up his chest.

Young women view Ivanka negatively: Poll ‘Ivanka convinced Trump to bomb Syrian airbase’ WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump’s son Eric has said that his father’s decision to launch a missile attack on a Syrian airbase was influenced by the reaction of his sister Ivanka. He said that the decision to punish President Bashar al-Assad for an alleged chemical weapons attack which killed civilians, was taken after his sister was “heartbroken and outraged” by the atrocity. Eric also said the action proved that his father was not in league with Russia and would not be “pushed around” by Vladimir Putin, The Daily Telegraph reported. Eric Trump said his father was not

intimidated by President Putin’s talk of war, and there would be “no-one harder” than President Trump if they “cross us”. The comment came as Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said Russia would face fresh sanctions if it did not pull its armed forces out of Syria and end its support for Assad. As foreign ministers of the G7 group of nations met to agree the best way to put pressure on Mr Putin, Johnson said the US missile strike had “changed the game” and Russia now “needs a way out” because association with Assad’s “toxic regime is...poisoning the reputation of Russia”, the report said.

A

new poll has revealed that a majority of young women share a negative view of US President Donald Trumps daughter and special counselor Ivanka Trump, the media reported this week. The SurveyMonkey (online survey development cloud-based software) poll released on Monday found that the First Daughter is much more popular among women aged 34 and over than she is among younger women, The Hill magazine reported. According to the survey, 40 per cent of women between the ages 18 and 34 view the first daughter unfavourably, compared to only 32 percent who see her favourably. Sixteen per cent of women between the ages of 34 and 64 found her more favourable than the younger women did, with 48 per cent favourable and 29 per cent

unfavourable. Women 65 and older gave the highest approval for the First Daughter, at 53 per cent, with 28 per cent disapproving. Ivanka Trump is also more popular among men than women. While 44 per cent of men view her favourably, only 35 per cent of women do, reports the magazine.

Her favourability ratings among men and women are almost identical to those of First Lady Melania Trump. According to the poll, more Americans are displeased with her father, with 39 percent of Americans saying they view the President favorably compared to 50 per cent who say they are displeased.

Spy row hits India-Pak ties After a Pakistani military court awarded death sentence to an alleged Indian ‘spy’, Kulbhushan Jadhav, a war of words broke out between the two countries, hitting a new low in bilateral ties

Pak rules out immediate execution

A

mid the outrage over the death sentence awarded to alleged Indian “spy” Kulbhushan Jadhav, India on Tuesday warned Pakistan of consequences if it executed him. A defiant Islamabad justified the capital punishment. A day after Jadhav’s sentencing by a Pakistani military court, the issue resonated both inside and outside Parliament. While Parliament unanimously condemned Pakistan’s decision, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj asserted that New Delhi “will go out of the way to save him (Jadhav)”. “An innocent Indian citizen is facing death sentence in Pakistan without due process and in violation of basic norms of law, justice and international relations,” Sushma Swaraj told both houses of Parliament. “I would caution the Pak-

BRIEFS Flipkart raises $1.4 bn, to take over eBay.in BANGALORE: India’s leading etailer Flipkart on Monday announced raising $1.4 billion from Microsoft, eBay and Chinese investment firm Tencent. “The latest funding round, at a post-transaction valuation of $11.6 billion, is the largest in our 10-year history and the Indian internet sector,” stated the city-based e-commerce major in a statement here. The deal with eBay involves sale of eBay.in to Flipkart. eBay made a cash investment in Flipkart for an unspecified equity stake. eBay.in will, however, continue to operate as an independent entity despite being a part of Flipkart.

Normalcy returns to Kashmir SRINAGAR: After three days of protests, normalcy returned in the Kashmir Valley on Wednesday as the separatists called off the twoday shutdown. The educational institutions, public transport, shops and other businesses began functioning normally after three days of shutdown due to the killing of civilians in the Sunday by-election. Tension across the valley came down after the Election Commission postponed the Anantnag parliamentary bypoll to May 25. The bypoll was otherwise scheduled for Wednesday.

ing war against Pakistan, had been framed under false charges. She said Pakistan’s aim was to divert global attention from its acts of sponsoring terrorism in India. “We have no choice but to regard this sentence if carried out as an act of premeditated murder.”

ISLAMABAD: Kulbhushan Jadhav, an alleged Indian ‘spy’ who has been awarded death sentence by a military court in Pakistan, will not be immediately executed, Defense Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif has said. Asif said three appellate forums are available under the law to Jadhav, whose family lives in Mumbai, Dawn online reported. According to the minister, the trial of Jadhav, who Pakistan said was working for the Research and Analy-

India would appeal to the Supreme Court of Pakistan and petition the President of Pakistan to save “the son of the nation”, Sushma Swaraj said. Home Minister Rajnath Singh said New Delhi would do everything required to secure justice for

BJP leader wants Mamata beheaded! IANS, ALIGARH

BJP youth wing leader’s announcement of a bounty of Rs 1.1 million to anyone who beheads West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee drew sharp condemnation on Wednesday from political parties. Yogesh Varshney of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha made the statement after police clashed with people taking part in a Hanuman Jayanti rally in West Bengal’s Birbhum district. “She stands up for Muslims. Aren’t Hindus human beings? If

there was some humanity, then there wouldn’t be so much discrimination against the Hindus,” he said after apparently seeing a video of police assaulting the rallyists to disperse them.

“There is only one thought that crossed my mind after watching that video... Whoever will cut off Mamata Banerjee’s head, I will give that person Rs 11 lakh as reward,” Varshney said. Varshney’s Rs 1.1-million offer went viral on social media, triggering outrage. Describing the comments as provocation against a popular Chief Minister and attack on women, opposition leaders vehemently condemned the incident in both houses of Parliament. BJP also later disowned the leader.

It’s summer of discontent for BJP in Bihar

The appointments made by new Bihar BJP chief Nityanand Rai for the state executive committee disappoint senior leaders IMRAN KHAN, PATNA

A

ll does not seem well in the Bihar unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with some of the old-timers raising a banner of revolt against the newly-appointed President of the party’s state unit. Nityanand Rai, the new state BJP chief, is the butt of anger of the party’s senior leaders, who have accused him of appointing officebearers of his choice in the recently reconstituted state executive committee, disregarding others’ requests. The BJP leaders opposing the move allege that Rai chose to ignore some of the well-known faces, also considered close to senior party leaders. Beyond these allegations, in the caste-ridden politics of Bihar, anger against Rai has an apparent caste color. Rai, a Yadav by caste, was select-

ed to head the state BJP by the party’s national President Amit Shah last month to counter Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad and his two sons’ growing popularity in the Yadav community — the most powerful among Other Backward Castes (OBC).

Sharma, who is considered close to senior party leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, who dominated the state BJP until last month, described Rai as a “criminal” and said he had questionable background and had roots in the contract business and

mafia activities. Sharma also criticized the new state executive and list of officebearers, saying it looked more like a “giroh of Rai” (Rai’s gang) than the executive body of a prominent political party. Sharma, who is known to be a vocal leader, has accused Rai of being anti-Bhumihar: “He (Rai) used to say that Bhumihars are descendants of Ravanas... One can

imagine his mindset.” Pintoo, along with other BJP leaders, on staged a sit-in to protest against suspension of party MLC Lal Babu Prasad for allegedly sexually harassing a woman in the state assembly complex last week. He also threatened to gherao party President Amit Shah during his visit to Bihar later this month. “Rai has suspended Lal Babu Prasad as he belongs to the emerging Bania caste.

Surprise visits shock Goa government babus Suspension of many government babus in Goa after newly-elected representatives of the state found them missing from their desks during surprise visits creates tension between bureaucrats and politicians MAYABHUSHAN NAGVENKAR, PANAJI

T

hree surprise visits to government offices by newlyelected representatives, two ministers and an opposition MLA, and subsequent suspension of more than a dozen employees for being slack at the workplace have now created a stand-off of sorts between the bureaucracy and politicians. The situation on the ground, however, would tend to go against the bureaucrats. The Goa Government Employees Association is now demanding a legal explanation for the suspension of several government employees after they were found missing from their desks during the visits by Revenue Minister Rohan Khaunte last month. “The Goa Government Employees Association is not averse to car-

rying out surprise inspections to enforce attendance in time so as to deliver timely services to the public. However, please note that suspension is not an appropriate action or punishment for late attendance on one or two occasions,” the association wrote to the Chief Secretary,

seeking a response from him. Association president John Nazareth, quoting from the Central Civil Service Rules of 1965, said that a government employee could be suspended for late attendance only when there was no casual leave to his/her credit.

“These actions are totally unfair,” Nazareth told IANS, as it leaves a stigma against the bureaucrat. Under pressure to deliver, ministers in the BJP-led coalition government, accompanied by media personnel, started off with surprise visits to offices functioning under the aegis of their respective ministries. Goa Forward MLA and Water Resources Minister Vinod Palienkar was the first to start the “surprise raid” spree, when on the afternoon of March 21, he walked into departmental offices in Panaji and at the Porvorim suburb only to find several staffers sleeping and others idling about. “Some of them were idle. Some were sleeping. I had warned them of action if such things are repeated,” Palienkar said. Revenue Minister Rohan Khaunte was next to conduct a surprise visit at the Deputy Collector’s

office in Mapusa town, around 10 km north of Panaji. His visit revealed that more than a dozen government employees were missing. “The two-day suspension I had ordered is a warning. If this continues, the punishment will be more stringent,” he said. Recently, Congress MLA Dayanand Sopte walked into a shocked audience at the Parsem village panchayat office to discover the panchayat secretary missing and heaps of garbage strewn around the office. Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has also already requested “lethargic” government servants to opt for a new voluntary resignation scheme, rather than continue in service, which has been announced in his recent budget speech. The state is India’s smallest state, incidentally has one of the highest government servant-to-residents ratio.

ASSAD NEEDS TO GO: HALEY Nikki Haley’s remarks came days after the US unleashed 59 Tomahawk missiles at a Syrian airbase in a retaliation for the Assad-led government’s alleged chemical weapons attack

First Hindu Congresswoman, Gabbard slams Syria strikes

IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said there is no political solution to the conflict in Syria until President Bashar al-Assad is out of power. “There’s not any sort of option where a political solution is going to happen with Assad at the head of the regime,” Haley told CNN in an interview airing. The Indian-origin diplomat’s remarks came days after the US on April 6 unleashed 59 Tomahawk missiles at a Syrian airbase in a retaliating for the Assad-led government’s alleged chemical weapons attack that killed nearly 80 persons in Idlib province. Haley told a special session of the UN Security Council that the US was “prepared to do more” in Syria and that it was Washington’s “vital national interest” to stop the use and spread of chemical weapons. According to Haley, the Assad regime has committed atrocities on innocent Syrian civilians multiple times. “It just — if you look at his actions, if you look at the situation, it’s going to be hard to see a government that’s peaceful and sta-

Haley reiterated her statements about further actions in Syria in her interview to the CNN. “If he needs to do more, he will do more,” Haley said when asked if Trump would order more strikes. “So, really, now what happens depends on how everyone responds to what happened in

Syria, and make sure that we start moving towards a political solution, and we start finding peace in that area.” Haley said she thought a regime change would occur because “all of the parties are going to see that Assad is not the leader that needs to be taking place for Syria”. Haley noted that ousting Assad was not the US’s only priority. “So, there’s multiple priorities,” she said. “It’s — getting Assad out is not the only priority. And so what we’re trying to do is obviously defeat the IS.” “Secondly, we don’t see a peace-

WASHINGTON: The first Hindu elected to the Congress, Hawaiian Democrat Tulsi Gabbard, slammed President Donald Trump’s decision to strike against Syria as reckless, the media reported. “This administration has acted recklessly without care or consideration of the dire consequences of the US attack on Syria without waiting for the collection of evidence from the scene of the chemical poisoning,” The Hill magazine quoted Gabbard as saying. “It angers and saddens me that President Trump has taken the advice of war hawks and escalated our illegal regime change war to overthrow the Syrian government.

A

n Indian-origin soldier was on trial in Britain for killing his former girlfriend by slitting her throat “from ear to ear” after she ended the relationship due to his “controlling and manipulative” nature, a media report said. Lance Corporal Trimaan “Harry” Dhillon was accused of breaking into Alice Ruggles’s ground-floor flat in north-east England and killing her, the Daily Mail reported. The incident happened in October last year when Dhillon attacked her in the flat severing her neck, leaving her in the blood-soaked bathroom as he suspected she was seeing another man, Newcastle Crown Court was told. Dhillon was unfaithful to Ruggles and regularly used internet dating sites. Prosecutor Richard Wright described Dhillon as an “obsessive, controlling and manipulative” person. Heat over North Korea soars In the wake of a US nuclear aircraft carrier and a Navy strike group deployment near the Korean peninsula, China has called for a ‘peaceful’ resolution of tensions

Xi urges Trump to peacefully resolve N. Korea tensions

orth Korea on Tuesday condemned the deployment of a US nuclear aircraft carrier and its strike group near the Korean peninsula and warned that it was prepared to respond to a “pre-emptive strike”, according to authorities. “If the US dares opt for a military action, crying out for pre-emptive attack and removal of the headquarters, North Korea is ready to react to any mode of war desired by the US” a foreign ministry spokesman said in a statement published by the staterun Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). The statement came after the Pentagon announced Saturday that it was deploying the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson and a Navy strike group to waters off the North Korean coast in response to the latest missile provocations by the Pyongyang regime, on April 5. “We will take the toughest counteraction against the provocateurs in order to defend ourselves by powerful force of arms,” the statement added. Following President Donald Trump’s inauguration in January, the US government has called for a tighter approach of dealing with

SHORT TAKES Stockholm attacker admits to ‘terrorist crime’ STOCKHOLM: Rakhmat Akilov, the main suspect in the Stockholm truck attack that killed four people, has confessed to deliberately driving the stolen vehicle into crowds in the Swedish capital, his lawyer said. During a court hearing here on Tuesday, the 39-year-old Uzbek admitted to committing a “terrorist crime” last week, the BBC reported. Johan Eriksson, defending Akilov, told the court: “His position is that he admits to a terrorist crime and accepts.”

3-month state of emergency in Egypt CAIRO: Egypt’s Parliament approved on Tuesday a threemonth state of emergency, two days after church bombings killed at least 45 people. The cabinet announced on Monday that the decision went into force from 1.00 p.m. on that day, but it required parliamentary approval according to the constitution.

Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile programme, Efe news reported. The ministry also highlighted the fact that Washington has analyzed different scenarios for carrying out a pre-emptive strike at the hermit state or eliminating its leader Kim Jong-un. “We will hold the US wholly accountable for the catastrophic consequences to be entailed by its outrageous actions,” the spokesperson said, adding “The prevailing grave situation proves once again that (North Korea) was entirely just when it increased in every way its military capabilities for self-defense and pre-emptive

attack with a nuclear force as a pivot.” Tension on the Korean peninsula has been increasing amid suspicions that Pyongyang may be preparing a new missile or nuclear test this month. North Korea convened its annual parliamentary session on Tuesday to commemorate the fifth anniversary of former leader Kim Jong-il’s transition to power. In addition, the country will also celebrate the 105th anniversary of the birth of its founder, Kim Il-sung, this Saturday and the 85th anniversary of the founding of the Korean People’s Army on April 25.

WASHINGTON: China called for a “peaceful” resolution of tensions on the Korean peninsula on Wednesday, as a US aircraft carrier strike group churned towards the contested region. Chinese President Xi Jinping discussed the situation in North Korea and Syria with US President Donald Trump in a telephone call on Wednesday, China’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement. According to the statement, Xi reiterated that China wants a denuclearized Korean peninsula and called for peace and stability. “China advocates to resolve the issue through peaceful means, and is willing to maintain communication and coordination with the US on the Korean peninsula issue,” the statement quoted Xi as saying. Trump had repeatedly called on China to do more to rein in its “unruly neighbor”, which stepped up its missile development and nuclear weapons programme since 2016, reported CNN. An analyst described the discussion between Xi and Trump as a “new phase” of China-US relations on North Korea. “I think at this point the common interest between the US and China outweigh (North Korea sabre-rattling),” Alexander Neill, a senior fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in Singapore, told CNN. The unexpected phone call between the two came after Trump turned to Twitter to vent his frustrations over North Korea. —IANS

Useless to give us ultimatums: Russia

T

he Group of Seven believes military intervention cannot end Syria’s brutal civil war and that Russia should be involved in a political solution to the conflict, Italian Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano said on Tuesday. “We don’t believe that the military solution is the right one,” Alfano told journalists after chairing a round of G7 talks in the Tuscan city of Lucca. The Foreign Ministers of Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Jordan also attended the talks. “There is the will by all parties (at the talks) to take forward a political, not a military process,” Alfano stated. Officials at the G7 talks agreed that including Syria’s ally Russia in negotiations was crucial, Alfano said. “Russia must not be isolated and on the contrary must be involved in the political transition process in Syria, in so far as this is possible,” he said. elhi Police were investigating claims by Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad that Air India staffers provoked and manhandled him, forcing him to hit back, a senior officer said this week. The Delhi Police Crime Branch was corroborating the sequence of events of March 23 to fill the “evidence gap” before taking any action against Gaikwad, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Praveer Ranjan told IANS. “There is a big gap in the evidence on the alleged assault of an Air India staffer by Gaikwad, who has raised doubts regarding the case,” Ranjan said. Gaikwad had gloated on March 23 to the media that he repeatedly assaulted Air India duty manager R. Sukumar, 60, with his slipper over a row over lack of business class seats on a Pune-Delhi flight. The incident led to Air India and all private airlines banning Gaikwad. The ban has since been lifted. Ranjan said the investigating team would first analyse a “statement” from the MP in which he has claimed that he was initially

On the delay in presenting the report on the Commonwealth Games, Thomas said it was due to the large number of reports that the PAC had to go through. In the last three years, the PAC under Thomas held 157 meetings and presented 73 reports. The 74th report is slated to be tabled in Parliament on Wednesday. Thomas said the PAC report on the 2G spectrum sale will be tabled in Parliament before April 30, which is the last working day of the current committee. The outgoing PAC Chairman

also said that he has suggested to the Speaker that media should be allowed to listen to the deliberations of the PAC during its meetings. “The other suggestion I mooted is that the PAC recommendations should be binding on the government,” Thomas said. Thomas had earlier also mooted the suggestion that the PAC Chairman too should be consulted while appointing the Comptroller and Auditor General of India. “The PAC is an institution that must be strengthened. Persons may come and go, but the institution must be preserved,” said Thomas, who headed the PAC for three consecutive terms since 2014. “It is mother of all parliamentary committees,” he added.

‘Regional cinema excels’ Only one top honor — Best Actor — went to Akshay Kumar for Hindi movie Rustom, leaving much of Bollywood wondering why movies like Dangal and Aligarh were left out SANDEEP SHARMA, NEW DELHI

n a turnaround from last year, regional cinema talent dominated Bollywood presence in the winners’ list of the 64th National Film Awards announced. Only one top honor — Best Actor — went to Akshay Kumar for Hindi movie Rustom, leaving much of Bollywood wondering why movies like Dangal and Aligarh were left out. The Best Hindi film award went to Neerja. “Bollywood films have not lost, but the regional cinema has excelled,” the feature films’ jury chairperson Priyadarshan told IANS. “Dangal missed out because of the powerful regional films. It’s not because of anything else. Some of the Marathi and Bengali films were brilliant and better,” he added. Perhaps the discretion was similar for Hansal Mehta’s Aligarh, which made a pertinent point on LGBT rights. Mehta expressed disappointment. The six industries of the south — Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Tulu and Konkani — bagged a total of 18 awards, while movies from Assam, Bengal, Maharashtra and Manipur also won in different categories. Marathi film Kasaav was named the Best Feature Film; filmmaker Rajesh Mapuskar was named as the

Don’t divide Indian cinema: Priyanka NEW DELHI: Every year, when the National Film Award winners are announced, a tally is drawn between who won more — Hindi or regional Priyanka Chopra films. For actress-producer Priyanka Chopra, they are all, after all, Indian. This divide between regional and Hindi cinema is uncalled for, affirmed Priyanka, whose Marathi film production Ventilator won three honors at the 64th National Film Awards.”I am not a negative person. I’d like to think that finally regional cinema is getting the credit it deserves because there are too many incredible storytellers and filmmakers there. As they get opportunities, and producers back them, regional films are getting more exposure and, of course, they will do well.”I don’t think there should be a comparison because, eventually, we are all Indian and these are all Indian films,” Priyanka told IANS.

Best Director for Ventilator — a Marathi production by Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra; and the Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment Award was given to Telugu film Sathamanam Bhavathi. The Best Film on Social Issues was given to Bollywood film Pink, while Nagesh Kukunoor’s Hindi movie Dhanak won the Best Children’s Film. Malayalam actress Surabhi C.M. was announced the Best Actress for Minnaminungu - the Firefly, and she was ecstatic upon hearing the news. Akshay was humbled by his first National Film Award, and dedicated his win to his family and wife, who said she is going through mixed emotions.

Priyadarshan said Akshay and Mohanlal were the main two contenders for the Best Actor honor, but Mohanlal was instead chosen for a Special Jury Award for his performance in three films. The Supporting Actors category saw Kashmiri girl Zaira Wasim and Manoj Joshi winning for their performances in Dangal and Dashakriya respectively. ‘Mukti Bhawan’: It is itself a masterpiece

T

wenty-four is too young to think about death, let alone make a melancholic meditative movie on mortality. Debutant Shubhashish Bhutiani’s Mukti Bhawan sweeps us into a world where death is not the end but a release into a realm of imperishable freedom. Or Moksha, if you will. Crafted with the care of a jeweller working on a specially intricate piece, the director brings to life the most precious and vital truth about death. As he takes us, along with his two protagonists, on a journey to the holy city of death Varanasi, the film somewhere along its resplendent route to salvation, becomes a treatise on life as defined by the inevitability of death. Like all the most important directors of the world from Satyajit Ray to Ritesh Batra, Bhutiani has a keen eye for detail. The camera of his louringly lucid lenses peers non judgmentally into the lives of a cramped middle-class family in the city where stress is a given and every family failing is finally forgiven.

Film: “Mukti Bhawan”; Writer-Director: Shubhashish Bhutiani; Cast: Lalit Behl, Adil Hussain, Geetanjali Kulkarni and Navninda Behl; Rating: *****

Curiously, no one in this family is unhappy. Yet one day, the father Daya (Lalit Behl) airily announces he wants to travel to Varanasi to... errrrr.... die. The patriarchal declaration — “to be ignored only at the family’s own risk” — is made with no peripheral support from conventional cinematic devices. Tajdar Junaid’s wonderful background score and Manan Mittal’s editing are used so sparingly as to almost seem non-existent. Technique, a fine and invaluable ally in

telling a tale as tender, fragile and yet powerful as this, is not used here to aggrandise the characters’ emotions. The feelings grow organically. The moments of Great Cinema creep up on us unannounced. Perhaps what makes Bhutiani’s film so great is that it doesn’t strive for greatness even in its most sublime moments. The finale, when Rajiv carries his father’s body through the narrow lanes of Varanasi while his daughter urges him to discard his grief and embrace

the joy of life, is etched in the most crucial lines of life. We cannot miss the celebration of life even in death. These characters don’t need props to strengthen their emotional casehistory. The actors merge into Bhutiani’s narrative without fuss, occupying stifling spaces in Varanasi where people go to die. Mukti Bhawan in the title is a lodge where the elders check in to breathe their last. Once Daya and his overworked son Rajiv (Adil Hussain) check into Mukti Bhawan, you would expect the narrative to run its course and just wait for the end. Bhutiani and his dialogue writer Assad Hussain keep our interest in the proceedings alive without straining to get our attention. The easygoing languorous fluency of the narrative never loses its purpose of existence.

Natraj Travel whizzes past 25-yr milestone

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL – At a time when most travel agencies have shut shop due to direct sales by airlines and online booking, etc., Natraj Travel Inc is going great guns, serving the Indian subcontinent for the past 25 years. Madhu Shah launched the agency in the late 1992 and obtained the necessary license and accreditation in the beginning of 1993. Deepak Shah Ceo has been fulltime with Natraj since 1999. The success has been possible because of joint efforts by Madhu and dedicated staff, each of whom have been with Natraj Travel for over 10 years, and this in itself is a great honor for the company. Kalpesh (operations manager) who worked with an airline in Ahmadabad, did his graduation in the IT field, before joining Natraj. Naz was working at another agency. Subhash is a retired engineer from Delhi, and Shilpa is from New Delhi with over 20 yrs of experience. Natraj policy is simple--90% airline tickets to India, one family at a time and one corporation at a time. “It is just that we are here almost 24/7 literally by email or by phone. We have customers all over the US--from New York to California and Minneapolis to Texas, serving on an average some 25,000 customers a year”, said a Natraj senior official. ‘Boil water’ alert in Berger County BY A STAFF WRITER ERGEN COUNT Y, NJ -Residents of three Bergen County towns are receiving reverse 911 calls after their water tested positive for E. Coli, a bacterium that can cause serious infections. A ‘boil water’ alert was issued for Ridgewood, Wyckoff and Glen Rock. The groundwater sample where the traces of E. coli were first detected on April 4 came from a well in Ridgewood. The sample was analyzed before it went through the town’s filtration system. Local officials say the alert is out of an abundance of caution and there is no E. coli outbreak. “It appears that it’s a highly unusual circumstance, something that hasn’t happened in the past,” said Ridgewood Mayor Susan Knudsen. “And I think before we speculate that there’s any cracked casings or anything, we really need to know and investigate what went on and where this came from.” Boiled or bottled water should be used for

drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and food preparation until further notice. The alert also includes the Valley Hospital, which is located in Ridgewood. The symptoms above are not caused only by

organisms in drinking water. If you experience any of these symptoms and they persist, you may want to seek medical advice. People at increased risk should seek advice from their health care providers about drinking this water.

Indian tech worker commits suicide BY A STAFF WRITER EATTLE, WA -- The body of a tech worker from India who allegedly committed suicide in Seattle, Washington, last week, was on April 11 cremated at his home town Bhongir in Telangana. The relatives of Madhukar Reddy Gudur attacked his wife Swati, when she came to attend the funeral. Blaming Swati for his death, they asked her to go away. The incident led to tension. The woman along with her mother later approached the police, seeking protection. The 37-year-old Gudur was found hanging from a fan in his house in Seattle on April 4. His wife was also working as a software professional in Seattle. The couple, who recently moved to their new home, have a seven-year-old daughter. Before ending his life, Gudur sent a mail to his parents, requesting them to forgive him. Marital dispute is believed to have led Gudur to kill himself. According to his family, he was very well off and did not have any

BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY – Ten men have been arrested for defrauding wholesalers from India operating in New York City’s diamond district out of millions of dollars in precious stones. FBI special agent Luke Hardison wrote in a criminal complaint on April 5 that at least five victims were taken for more than $9 million in the scams. The case was investigated by a task force of the police, the FBI and the US Customs and Border Patrol agents. Authorities claim the diamond dealers persuaded wholesalers from India operating stores in New York to allow them to trade small, hard-to-trace stones. But they say the dealers avoided paying for the diamonds and instead told lies, bounced checks and used other tricks to resell the diamonds themselves. Two suspects remain at large. The defendants induced the victims in Mumbai to send diamonds by an interstate carrier by purporting to agree to payment terms that they had no intention to, and did not, honor. According to the complaint, the victims in Mumbai worked in the diamond wholesale businesses in and around the Indian city. In September 2016, the victims reported to Indian authorities claiming millions of dollars in losses caused by the defendants. They sent the diamonds ordered by the defendants, through a fraudulent scheme, to New York. However, the victims did not get paid and were told over a period of time that the diamonds were with someone else or they did not have the money cash to pay. The victims have still not been paid for the diamonds that they sold in the scheme. The 12 accused have been charged with conspiring to commit mail fraud, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

Childhood cancers up by 13% A study by the WHO-led agency shows that in 2001-2010, childhood cancer was 13 per cent more common than in the 1980s IANS, PARIS

I

ncidents of childhood cancer have increased across the globe by 13 per cent over 20 years, reaching an annual rate of 140 per million children aged 014 years worldwide, says a study by the World Health Organization’s cancer research arm. In 2001-2010, childhood cancer was 13 per cent more common than in the 1980s, showed the study by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), part of the WHO. Part of this increase may be due to better, or earlier, detection of these cancers, the researchers noted. Leukaemia — a cancer which starts in blood-forming tissue, usually the bone marrow — is the most common cancer in children

younger than 15 years, making up almost a third of childhood cancer cases, the findings showed. Tumors of the central nervous

system ranked second (20 per cent of cases), and lymphomas accounted for 12 per cent of cases. In children younger than five

years, a third of the cases were embryonal tumors, such as neuroblastoma, retinoblastoma, nephroblastoma, or hepatoblastoma. The findings, published in the journal Lancet Oncology, are based on information collected globally on almost 300,000 cancer cases diagnosed in 2001-2010. “Cancer is a significant cause of death in children and adolescents, in spite of its relatively rare occurrence before the age of 20 years,” said IARC Director Christopher Wild. “This extensive new set of information on the pattern and incidence of cancer in young people is vital to raise awareness and to better understand and combat this neglected area of health early in life,” Wild said. The study also reported, for the first time, on cancer occurrence in adolescents (age 15-19 years).

Common drugs risky for Alzheimer patients IANS, LONDON

C

ommonly used sedatives called benzodiazepines are associated with an increased risk of pneumonia when used in people with Alzheimer disease, according to a study. Dementia, of which 60-70 per cent of cases are Alzheimer disease, is a risk factor for pneumonia, and many people with dementia are prescribed benzodiazepines and non-benzodiazepines (called Zdrugs), both of which have seda-

tive effects. “An increased risk of pneumonia is an important finding to consider in treatment of patients with Alzheimer disease,” said Heidi Taipale from the University of Eastern Finland. “Benzodiazepines and Z-drugs are frequently prescribed for this population, and long-term use is typical. Pneumonia often leads to admission to hospital, and patients with dementia are at increased risk of death related to pneumonia,” Taipale added. The study, published in CMAJ

BRIEFS: Asthma drug may help skin disorder treatment

LONDON: Patients who develop itchy wheals in response to cold or friction, benefit from treatment with omalizumab, a drug normally used to treat asthma, a new research has found. The drug’s active substance is highly effective against different types of inducible urticaria, a skin disease characterized by itchy wheals, which develop in response to physical stimuli such as cold or friction, the results of two separate clinical studies showed. “Our results show that patients with severe forms of physical urticaria can benefit from omalizumab,” said one of the researchers.

Protein that enhances vaccine efficacy found NEW YORK: Researchers have discovered a protein that could help make vaccinations more effective and also provide protection from other diseases such as cancer. The researchers purified a protein found on the exterior of bacteria (neisseria meningidis) and used it as an accessory to provide a better vaccination response. Typically, vaccines can either increase the amount of antibody production or they can stimulate cells (called cytotoxic T cells) to directly kill the offending agent. The protein, called PorB, is unique in that it can do both, researchers said.

Grey hair may risk male heart IANS,LONDON

en with more grey hair — irrespective of age — may be at increased risk of heart disease, warns a new study. “Our findings suggest that, irrespective of chronological age, hair greying indicates biological age and could be a warning sign of increased cardiovascular risk,” said Irini Samuel, a cardiologist at Cairo University, Egypt. Atherosclerosis, build-up of fatty material inside the arteries, and hair graying, share similar mechanisms such as impaired DNA repair, oxidative stress, inflammation, hormonal changes and senescence of functional cells. “Atherosclerosis and hair greying

occur through similar biological pathways and the incidence of both increases with age,” Samuel added. This study — presented at EuroPrevent 2017, annual congress of

High hair whitening score was associated with increased risk of coronary artery disease the European Association of Preventive Cardiology (EAPC), being held at Malaga, Spain from April 6-8 — involved 545 adult men. The researchers assessed the prevalence of grey hair in patients with

coronary artery disease — usually caused by atherosclerosis — and whether it was an independent risk marker of disease. Data was collected on traditional cardiovascular risk factors including hypertension, diabetes, smoking, dyslipidaemia and family history of coronary artery disease. Researchers found that high hair whitening score was associated with increased risk of coronary artery disease independent of chronological age and established cardiovascular risk factors. Patients with coronary artery disease had a statistically significant higher hair whitening score and higher coronary artery calcification than those without coronary artery disease.

‘Indian fashion adorns vision of timeless crafts’ NEW DELHI: Indian fashion today adorns a contemporary and modern vision of the country’s timeless crafts, feel designer duo Ankur and Priyanka Modi of brand AM:PM, who credit the Indian government for playing a significant role in that. “Indian fashion today adorns a contemporary and modern vision of our timeless crafts. Having being born in a country known to be rich for its diverse culture and heritage weaves, it is only natural to integrate our passion with tradition,” Ankur told IANS. Added Priyanka: “We feel the government’s focus and support has helped create awareness of our famed history, which in turn has reignited the pride we once felt in things which were Indian, and which then has lead to demand of the indegenous product, craft and textiles. “The demand has led us all to

innovate and revive the Indian craft and craftsmanship, not the forcefulness of the government.” The designer duo has come up with their new Spring/Summer 2017 collection, inspired by life during the British Raj. Following the label’s endeavour to translate these bygone crafts into a contemporary vision, the collection celebrates Indian chintz, botanical and geometric patterns. Replete with breezy asymmetrical modern cuts and silhouettes, the line explores a visual dialogue between fashion and colonial India. One can see the variants like high-waist cropped pants, dhoti pants with peplum blouses, elaborate jackets, wrap dresses, kurtipalazzos and churidar suits in the collection. The range highlights khadi, a homespun fabric that became a symbol of patriotism with Mahatma Gandhi’s endorsement.

Mental Disorders - Global Health Estimates” said the total number of people living with depression in the world is 322 million. The estimated prevalence of depressive disorders in India is 4.5 per cent of the country’s total population, according to the report. Usually, the symptoms of depression include a predominantly low mood on most days. Depressed individuals may feel a lack of interest in their favorite activities, feel physically exhausted, and sleep too much or too little. They also tend to lose appetite and hence unwanted weight loss is often observed. There is also a feeling of guilt, hopelessness and worthlessness which may lead them to take extreme steps like committing suicide or self-harm. For some individuals who have depression and a substance-use disorder, giving up on drugs or alcohol may be even more challenging. Those using alcohol for years to bury depressive symptoms find that depression rises to the surface in sobriety. That is why it is so important to receive integrated treatment for both depression and substance abuse at the same time.
