Republicans spar over Trump’s proposal to ban Muslims In the debate hosted by CNN in Las Vegas, Trump defended his call, saying: “We are not talking about isolation; we are talking about security” ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON
Trump hit new high ahead of Republican debate
R
epublican presidential candidates joined issue with frontrunner Donald Trump’s call to ban Muslims from coming to the US with Senator Ted Cruz citing the example of India to say all Muslims were not jihadists. “I understand why Donald made that proposal. I introduced legislation in the Senate that I believe is more narrowly focused at the actual threat, which is radical Islamic terrorism,” he said participating in the final Republican debate of 2015 on December 15. In the debate hosted by CNN in Las Vegas, Trump defended his call, saying: “We are not talking about isolation; we are talking about security.” “As far as other people, like in the migration where they’re going, tens of thousands of people having cell phones with ISIS flags on them,” he said. “And if I’m president and if Obama has brought some to this country, they are leaving. They’re going. They’re gone.” Asked about his earlier comments calling Trump “unhinged,” former Florida Governor Jeb Bush said: “Donald, you know, is great at the one-liners.” “But he’s a chaos candidate. And

he’d be a chaos president. He would not be the commander-inchief we need to keep our country safe,” he declared. Trump was quick to hit back, saying: “Jeb doesn’t really believe I’m unhinged. He said that very simply because he has failed in this campaign. It’s been a total disaster. Nobody cares. And, frankly, I’m the most solid person up here.” Like Cruz, Senator Marco Rubio too declined to attack Trump outright and said: “We must deal with this threat of radical Islamists, especially from ISIS.” With the debate focussing on
national security and the fight against Islamic extremism, former neurosurgeon Ben Carson declared: “We are at war.” Trump also reiterated his strategy to cut off ISIS’ recruiting methods on social media, which he argued would involve collaboration with Silicon Valley and limiting Internet access. “I would certainly be open to closing areas where we are at war with somebody,” Trump said. “I sure as hell don’t want to let people that want to kill us and kill our nation use our Internet. Yes, sir. I am.”
WASHINGTON: Ahead of December 15 Republican presidential debate, party frontrunner Donald Trump climbed to his highest support in a new national poll with a broad 41 percent support from Republicans and Republican-leaning registered voters. The Monmouth University poll conducted from December 10 to13, the first after the real estate mogul proposed temporarily banning the entry of all Muslims to the US, found him holding a staggering 27-point lead over Senator Ted Cruz with just 14 percent support. Senator Marco Rubio had 10 percent support and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson had nine percent. Trump climbed 13 percentage points since the last Monmouth University poll in late October. “Trump is tapping into the phenomenon,” said Patrick Murray, who leads the Monmouth poll. “The more he says things that make the Republican leaders cringe, the more he attracts people to his side.” The poll underscores Trump’s success at keeping voters fixated on
his unprecedented presidential campaign, commented influential political news site Politico. Trump celebrated the favorable findings with a series of tweets and a post on Facebook. “Looks like we just broke another polling ceiling,” he wrote to his followers. “While the establishment schemes to nominate someone they control - the voters are clearly indicating that they want someone who will fix the broken political system in DC. Thank you for your support! We will ?#?MakeAmericaGreatAgain!” The numbers represent a boost for Trump after a Bloomberg Politics/Des Moines Register survey of likely Iowa Republican caucus participants on Saturday found that Cruz held a 10point advantage over Trump. A Fox News poll gave Cruz a 28 percent-to-26 percent edge. In still another Iowa survey released Monday from Quinnipiac University, likely caucus-goers again indicated an essentially knotted race, with Trump at 28 percent and Cruz at 27 percent, virtually doubling Rubio’s 14 percent.
Anti-IS fight continues US court seeks Modi’s visa records by February to be difficult: Obama A IANS, WASHINGTON
IANS, WASHINGTON
U
S President Barack Obama on Monday said the fight against extremist group Islamic State “continues to be difficult”. “As I said before, ISIL (another acronym for IS) is dug in, including in urban areas, and they hide behind civilians, using defenseless men, women and children as human shields,” Obama said at the Pentagon after meting with his top national security advisers. “We recognize that progress needs to keep coming faster,” Xinhua news agency quoted Obama as saying. In his second televised speech on counter-terrorism within eight days, Obama did not mention any
changes to the administration’s current strategy against the IS both in Iraq and Syria. On Friday, US Defence Barack Obama Secretary Ash Carter revealed that Obama “has indicated and shown a willingness to increase” the number of US troops on the ground in Iraq. Since the outset of the US-led coalition campaign against the IS, the Obama administration has been sticking to its original strategy of training local forces to conduct ground assaults against the group, together with launching air raids.
US federal judge has ordered the State Department to produce all documents by February 2016 related to Obama administration’s decision to lift a ban on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s entry to the US. “The Department of State will make an initial production of discovery in mid-January 2016, followed by another production of discovery in mid-February 2016,” judge John G. Koeltl of Southern District of New York said in his Dec 9 order. The next conference in the case will take place on Feb 29, he directed. Modi’s previously issued tourist visa was revoked in 2005 over his alleged role in the 2002 Gujarat riots when he was chief minister of the state. However, President Barack Obama was quick to con-
gratulate and invite Modi to the US after his election as Prime Minister in May 2014. Modi has visited the US twice since then. Modi was the only person ever denied a US visa under the US law on religious freedom. But after his election as prime minister, the ban was revoked as heads of govern-
ment are exempt from the law. In September, US based rights group Sikhs For Justice had filed a complaint challenging the failure of the State to produce the documents in response to Freedom of Information Act request seeking records from June 2013 onwards regarding Modi’s visa and entry.

CBI raids Delhi Secretariat
An angry Kejriwal calls prime minister Narendra Modi ‘a coward and a psychopath’; alleges raid aimed at a file connected to finance minister Arun Jaitley and his links with DDCA
CBI raids rock Parliament
‘CBI accessed papers not related with probe’
NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Dec 16 said that CBI seized documents that had “no relation” to the allegations being probed against Rajendra Kumar. “Docs seized from my office. No relation to allegations being probed. CBI kept reading DDCA file in my office. They wud hv seized it. But after my media briefing, they left it. Not clear if they took a copy,” Kejriwal said in a series of tweets. He also attacked finance minister Arun Jaitley, asking why he was scared of a probe into the alleged irregularities at the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA).

T
he Central Bureau of Investigation raided the office of Rajendra Kumar, principal secretary to chief minister Arvind Kejriwal at Delhi Secretariat on December 15. The CBI said the raid was in connection with a 2007 corruption case, however, Kejriwal and Aam Aadmi Party functionaries accused
the central government of vendetta. An incensed Kejriwal promptly took to twitter and said: “Modi is a coward and a psycopath.” “CBI raids my office,” he said, adding: “When Modi cudn’t handle me politically, he resorts to this cowardice.” The CBI, however, said it did not raid Kejriwal’s office but that of his secretary. Kejriwal said the CBI team was looking for a report of the inquiry
NEW DELHI: The issue of raids by CBI at the office of a secretary to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal rose in parliament with the opposition attacking the government on the issue. The Rajya Sabha saw repeated adjournments after the opposition members created ruckus over the CBI raid as well as convening of the Arunachal Pradesh assembly session by the governor. Trinamool member Derek O’Brien raised the issue of
commission that had probed, on his instructions, the affairs of the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA), which he alleged was a den of corruption. “Jaitley had been involved for a long time with the DDCA,” he said. Jaitley refused to comment on the issue beyond terming Kejriwal’s charge as “rubbish”. A CBI officer said that a case has been registered against Kerjiwal’s

attended by BJP president Amit Shah, was held at Rajnath Singh’s office in Parliament House on December 15. “As a last attempt to take Congress on board on GST, Arun Jaitley and Venkaiah Naidu will soon meet Mallikarjun Kharge and Ghulam Nabi Azad,” said a union minister, who didn’t wish to be named, after the meeting. The minister also said that the party is chalking out a strategy if Goods and Services Tax (GST) is not passed during this session.

In a string of tweets, Kejriwal said: “I am the only CM who dismissed, on my own, a minister n a senior officer on charges of corruption and handed their cases to CBI.” “If CBI had any evidence against Rajender, why didn’t they share it wid me? I wud hv acted against him,” Kejriwal tweeted.

The Indian side was particularly elated with the package for the highspeed train between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, as it comes with an interest of a mere 0.1 percent, a duration of 50 years and a moratorium on repayments up to 15 years. Modi also thanked Abe for the “Japan-India Make-in-India Special Finance Facility” of up to 1.5 trillion yen ($12 billion approximately) to promote investments from the Asian giant, mainly in infrastructure that need long gestation funding.

Time for change of guard at Cong?
Time is running out fast for the dynasty. With the electoral fortunes of the Congress hitting its nadir last May, de-linking of the party from Nehru-Gandhi family has become a necessity Gandhi is credited with devising plans to revitalize the party by “reinforcing the role of ordinary workers and creating a representative and responsible organizational structure of the party” in 1998. But, in 2015, Rajiv Gandhi’s widow can be accused of “losing touch with the toiling millions”. To make the scenario even more depressing for a brooding Congress worker, the only alternative being presented by an organization in denial is Rahul Gandhi. It would be naïve to expect Rahul Gandhi of upping his leadership ante and provide effective leadership to one of
REKHA BHATTACHARJEE, SYDNEY
W
hat has become of our great organization? Instead of a party that fired the imagination of the masses throughout the length and breadth of India, we have shrunk, losing touch with the toiling millions, said Rajiv Gandhi while addressing the Congress centenary session in Bombay (now Mumbai) on December 28, 1985. History seems to be, like always, repeating itself. The “great organization” India’s prime minister was referring to needs an urgent leadership change to stem the rot. As one of the staunch Nehru-Gandhi family loyalists, M.L. Fotedar, has recently stated, the Congress is on the verge of a collapse. “However, this time there is no saviour,” writes the former union minister and serving Congress Working Committee member in his soon to be released book, “The Chinar Leaves”. If one is to ask a devoted Congress worker, the scenario is really bleak. A political party which was guided by intellectual giants like Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, and which has ruled India for around 50 years in the last seven decades or so, has been reduced to the ignominy of occupying just a handful of the opposition benches. Time is running out fast for the dynasty which has been at the helm of the Indian National Congress for most of the last seven decades or so.
It would be unkind to expect a ‘reluctant politician’ to lead the second most populous country on the planet. It would be also unreasonable if that reluctant politician happens to be Rahul Gandhi
With the electoral fortunes of the Congress hitting its nadir last May winning just 44 of the Lok sabha’s 543 elected seats — the delinking of the historic political organization from the Nehru-Gandhi family is a historic necessity which the Congress leadership can ignore only at its peril. Sonia Gandhi is rightly credited for her role in saving the oldest Indian political party from oblivion in 1998, but she is well beyond her prime. The Congress president
needs to be shown the script of her inaugural speech on April 6, 1998. “I have come to this office at a critical point in the history of the party. Our numbers in parliament have dwindled. Our support base among the electorate has been seriously eroded. Some segments, including Dalits and minorities, have drifted from us...”We are in danger of losing our central place in the polity of our country as a central party of governance,” Sonia Gandhi had said.
the largest political organizations in the world. It would be unkind to expect a “reluctant politician” to lead the second most populous country on the planet. It would be also unreasonable if that reluctant politician happens to be Rahul Gandhi — the same person who is accused of copying a simple condolence message to the victims of the Nepal earthquake from his mobile. Why are Congress leaders so reluctant to look beyond Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi? How can one justify such a bankruptcy of
Why India’s conditional pardon to David Headley is baffling MAYANK CHHAYA, CHICAGO
C
onsidering that any intelligence that David Coleman Headley might supply India will necessarily be exponentially dated, it is hard to make sense of a special court in Mumbai granting a conditional pardon to the key Mumbai terror plotter and even making him a prosecution witness. For Headley’s part though he has once again pulled off a crafty deal to save himself more trouble by agreeing to turn approver for India reportedly in return for disclosing the role played by his handlers from the Pakistani military and intelligence services. However, on the face of it one cannot say what
leadership from a party which still has some credible intellectuals in its ranks? The 2014 parliamentary election results provided a wonderful opportunity to push for a leadership change but it has been wasted by those for whom the Congress starts and finishes with: Nehru-Gandhi family. “The dilemma before Sonia Gandhi was that on the one hand she could not do without her coterie while on the other hand she had an overriding desire to see her son succeed in politics,” Fotedar writes in his book. Justifying the Pavlovian condi-
specifically India stands to gain by granting him such extraordinary accommodation. The only plausible explanation behind the Mumbai court’s decision is that the Indian prosecutors are trying to make the best of a bad situation where Headley is a tightly controlled subject by the US authorities access to whom is very limited. Given his history with the US authorities as an informant and rather complicated entanglement with the terrorist group Lashkar-eTaiba as well as elements of Pakistani intelligence there has been some reluctance on the US side to expose him to Indian investigators. While his plea deal with the US prosecutors requires him to cooper-
ate with India and other foreign agencies to the fullest possible extent, it is a matter of speculation how much he is allowed to reveal. Anything that he might have to say about his relationship with Pakistani intelligence or any other official agency is now a good seven to nine years old. He was arrested in October, 2009 from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport just
as he was about to leave the country. Effectively, he has been out of any direct touch with any of his Pakistani contacts since his arrest. He is known to have shared all the intelligence and information that he possessed about the November 26, 2008 Mumbai attacks with the US investigators. He was also extensively interrogated by Indian investigators in
tioning the Congress leadership is often accused of, Sonia Gandhi — and the unofficial heir-apparent Rahul Gandhi — have been completely absolved of the responsibility of bringing the Congress to such a pathetic status. To again quote from Rajiv Gandhi’s above-mentioned Bombay speech: The revitalization of our organization is a historical necessity. The voices of those refusing to “go gentle into that good night” are beginning to be heard. (Rekha Bhattacharjee is a veteran Indian journalist based in Sydney). June, 2010 during which the US Department of Justice had maintained that “There were no restrictions on the questions posed by Indian investigators”. That being the case, coupled with the datedness of his information, the Indian conditional pardon is intriguing. Headley, who is already serving a 35-year-long sentence, has nothing to lose by turning approver on India’s behalf because the quality of what he has to offer is already fairly diminished because of his past cooperation. Unless there has been some behind-the-scenes deal-making between the Indian and American investigators over some still crucial bits of information that Headley will reveal, there does not seem to be anything significant to be gained by extending him such remarkable accommodation yet again. His plea deal to escape the death penalty and extradition to India was yet another deal that he struck. Now with the Indian deal, Headley has yet again excelled at finding a way out.

Disabled Indian girl wins award in NZ WELLINGTON: A 16-year-old girl, born prematurely in India and having a condition called hemiplegia, has won a prestigious award constituted to honor outstanding achievements of New Zealanders with disabilities, a media report said. Muskan Devta, a published author and inspirational speaker, was presented with the Supreme ACC Attitude Award for 2015 at Auckland’s Viaduct Events Centre earlier this month, stuff.co.nz reported on December 11. “Hemiplegia is something I would have to live with throughout my entire life. So why worry?” she said at the awards ceremony. Devta earlier won the award in the junior category last year. Her persistent efforts to improve the lives of others also saw her getting selected as a finalist in the youth category of the award this year. But overcoming a tough competition from the winners of eight other award categories, she won the overall Attitude ACC Supreme Award. Though it was hard to make friends and lead a “normal” life when her parents shifted to New Zealand, Muskan found courage in her younger brother Aman and began her mission to make a positive change in the world. In 2013, Muskan published first autobiography, “I Dream”, to raise money for Starship Children’s Hospital where she underwent corrective surgery. She now aims to raise funds to build two classrooms at a school for the visually challenged children in India.

When Jarrett greeted the gathering saying “Happy Gurpurab” a room full of Sikh men, women, and children cheered and clapped, according to a media release. Dr. Rajwant Singh, Chairman of the Sikh Council on Religion and Education, said, “The Sikh community is grateful for the powerful and supportive words of President Obama’s team today.”
“This sends an assuring signal to the entire community that this nation stands behind it,” he said. Valerie Jarrett was given a Phulkari shawl, a typical Punjabi speciality, and a book on Sikh heritage and ethos as she was honored by Sikh representatives from Sikh Coalition, Sikh Council on Religion and Education and United Sikhs. Vanita Gupta, principal deputy assistant attorney general, said: “We at the Justice department continue to use all of the tools available to combat any violence or hate against the Sikh community.” In his keynote address, Amritjit Singh of Ohio University discussed
about “Guru Nanak: Equality and Social Justice”. “Guru Nanak’s message has special resonance for us today where fear and ignorance are giving rise to hatred, violence, and intolerance,” he said. “The Guru had a sharp eye
for the patterns of hypocrisy, intolerance, and exploitation.” Nikki-Gurinder Kaur Singh of Colby College said the legacy of Guru Nanak empowers young Sikhs “with an identity which is equally American and Sikh.”

ndian doctor Uma Sen, who spent her entire career working in Ghana, was on Friday conferred its prestigious award Member of the Order of the Volta (MV) — by President John Mahama in recognition of her “patriotic and humanitarian services to the people of this country in the field of health care”. The citation read: “At the regional hospital, you devoted your full time to duty and brought smiles to many women who hitherto, suffered from infertility and could not have babies of their own. You saved many lives at the Regional Hospital, Ho. Ut is on record that you always responded positively to night and weekend calls even when you were

ranting a rare religious accommodation to an active-duty combat soldier, the US Army has allowed a Sikh captain to grow his beard and wear a turban, in a move that may have far reaching implications for troops seeking to display their faith, a media report said. Captain Simratpal Singh was forced to drop his locks to the floor on his first day at the US Military Academy at West Point almost 10 years ago, as the army did not allow soldiers to have long hair or beard,
the New York Times reported. However, all this changed last week for Captain Singh, who believed his “self-image” was “cut away”, after the army granted him
a religious accommodation that will allow him to grow his beard and wrap his hair in a turban. “It is wonderful. I had been living a double life, wearing a turban only at home. My two worlds have finally come back together,” said the Bronze Star awardee. It was the first time in decades that the military has granted a religious accommodation for a beard to an active-duty combat soldier. But it is only temporary, lasting for a month while the army decides whether to give permanent status to Captain Simratpal Singh’s exception.

Saudi Arabia elects female politicians in historic vote Women candidates make it to the local council for the first time in the kingdom, which was world’s last country to give its women right to vote IANS, RIYADH
S
audi Arabia has elected its first female councillors in a historic step for a country where women are banned even from driving. Women won only 20 seats out of more than 2,000 in local councils across the country, but it was more than the candidates expected. Salma bint Hizab al-Oteibi was elected to the council of Madrakah, a region in Makkah, the official SPA news agency reported. The municipal polls on December 12, which were hailed by many as historic, saw a turnout of about 25 percent. Women are banned from driving and must cover themselves in public in the kingdom, which was the world’s last country to give its

women the right to vote. More than 900 women ran for seats. They were up against nearly 6,000 men competing for places on 284 councils whose powers are restricted to local affairs including responsibility
for streets, public gardens and rubbish collection. A female voter, Najla Harir, said: “I exercised my electoral right. We are optimistic about a bright future for women in our homeland.”
Hatoon al-Fassi, a Saudi womens’ rights activist and writer, said in a tweet: “This is a new day. The day of the Saudi woman.” There were no elections in the 40 years between 1965 and 2005. The decision to allow women to take part was taken by the late King Abdullah and is seen as a key part of his legacy. In announcing the reforms, King Abdullah said women in Saudi Arabia “have demonstrated positions that expressed correct opinions and advice”. Before he died in January, he appointed 30 women to the country’s top advisory Shura Council. There were 2,100 council seats available in December 12 vote. An additional 1,050 seats are appointed with approval from the king.
EU comes up with new border plan IANS, STRASBOURG
T SANAA: Officials and residents of the southwestern province of Taiz accused Houthi fighters of killing seven residents and wounding nine others in shelling that they said has been sporadically continued since the truce took effect on December 15 midday. The officials and witnesses confirmed that Houthi militias are still besieging Taiz despite the truce, preventing water and medical supplies from entering the region. There was no immediate comment from the Houthi group. Also on Dec 16 morning, officials and villagers of al-Mazarik district of the northeast province of al-Jouf said Houthi militia fired tank and artillery weapons on the district as they are advancing to near a government-controlled military camp, al-Nasr, in an apparent attempt to retake it. They said the government forces fired back to repel the advancing rebels. On Dec 15 evening, military sources said that Houthi rebels and government loyalists in the country’s northern province of Marib traded clashes 50 minutes after the beginning of the truce.
he European Union (EU) on December 15 presented a new border and coast guard plan to better manage the bloc’s external borders and protect the passport-free policy, in a bid to stem the massive migrant influx. The EU’s executive branch the European Commission proposed at the European Parliament plenary meeting here to establish a brand new authority, namely “the European Border and Coast Guard”, to replace the Frontex, a European agency heavily relying on member states’ border control efforts, Xinhua reported. The agency was designed to draw on at least 1,500 experts that can be
quickly deployed and for the first time, to acquire technical equipment, making it no longer short of staff or equipment for European border operations. The EU’s proposals also provoked controversial views as the agency was
granted the right to intervene in member states’ border control actions even without host country’s approval. Europe is experiencing the worst migrant crisis since the aftermath of the Second World War.
SHORT TAKES Saudi forms military alliance against terror RIYADH: Saudi Arabia on December 15 announced the formation of an Islamic military alliance comprising 34 countries to fight against terrorism. A joint operations centre will be established in Riyadh to coordinate military operations against terror.
UN to close probe on Iran’s n-activities
VIENNA: The UN nuclear agency board members on December 15 adopted a resolution to close the probe into Tehran’s alleged nuclear activities in the past, upon a review of Iran’s implementation of its commitments under a nuclear deal endorsed by the UN security council in July. After a 12-year investigation of the suspected Iran’s nuclear plan, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) decided to finalize the whole process in light of the historic nuclear deal, Xinhua reported. Upon receipt by the board members of the IAEA report which verifies Iran’s implementation of its relevant commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the probe of Tehran’s past suspected nuclear activities will be finished, according to the resolution.

P
olice arrested dozens of students and activists of various groups to prevent a beef festival planned by some students and a pork festival and cow worship by their rivals at Osmania University on December 10. While police sealed the university campus and arrested protesters, some organizers of the beef festival posted pictures and videos on social media, claiming that they succeeded in organizing it. Police, which threw a thick security blanket around the campus, arrested student leaders, workers of Bajrang Dal, Gau Raksha Dal and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to foil all three programs. The protesters for and against the beef festival were taken into custody. P.L. Visweswara Rao, a former professor of Osmania University, and others who had reached the campus in support of the beef festival were also arrested. Some unidentified
BRIEFS Premji wants techies to do more charity BENGALURU: As software professionals (techies) are well paid, they should give more for charity, Wipro czar Azim Azim Premji Premji said last week. “IT firms and their employees spend more time on helping victims of national calamities, but their contribution to charity is disappointing though they are well paid and can afford to give more,” Premji said at a fireside chat with Biocon chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw at a Bschool event here. Premji has pledged his personal shares valued at $8.5 billion to charity.
Chandy’s invite to PM’s event withdrawn THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy was first invited to and then asked to stay away from a function at KolOommen Chandy lam on Dec 15 being attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Former defense minister A.K. Antony questioned the flip-flop. “People of Kerala want to know, who are these forces behind the organizers who asked the chief minister to keep away,” he said.

people pelted stones at a bus of the Road Transport Corporation (RTC) near the university, damaging window panes. However, nobody was injured. Earlier, police arrested BJP legislator Raja Singh and dozens of students and activists of various groups to prevent any untoward incident. Raja Singh was taken into preven-
tive custody from his house in Dhoolpet area in the morning as he planned to join the ‘Gau Maata puja’ (cow worship) planned by some right-wing Hindu groups on the campus. Women activists of the Gau Raksha Dal were also arrested when they tried to enter the campus. Police sealed all entrances to the sprawling
campus to foil attempts by any group to organize any program. Many students were picked up during searches conducted in and around campus since Dec 9 night. The campus was out of bounds for outsiders as the university authorities and police have refused to give permission to conduct any festival.
HYDERABAD: Twelve students of Osmania University were arrested on December 11 for allegedly holding a “beef festival” in violaRaja Singh tion of court orders, police said. Police took into custody those students who had consumed beef in the university hostel the previous day and posted pictures on social networking sites. Don’t blame us for floods: Tamil Nadu government IANS, CHENNAI
T
he Tamil Nadu government said on Sunday that it can’t be blamed for the massive flooding of Chennai following the heaviest rains in a century. Chief Secretary K. Gnanadesikan denied that official indecision or mismanagement vis-a-vis the release of water from the Chembarambakkam lake into the Adyar river caused the all-round destruction. He said in a statement that the floods were caused primarily due to the very high rainfall in November,
which was followed by more rains in Chennai, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur districts on December 1. Media reports have said flooding of the Adyar that killed many and destroyed livelihood and assets of millions of people was due to improper management of water releases from the Chembarambakkam lake. According to Gnanadesikan, the level of water reservoirs required to be maintained at two feet below full tank level while monsoon is still active. He said the rules balance the interests of water storage for the
scarcity period, the need to control flooding in downstream areas and the safety of the reservoir. Gnanadesikan said adequate flood warnings were issued to people living in low lying areas on December 1, and over 47,300 peo-
ple were evacuated. “The flow in Adyar reached its full capacity due to the surplus from Chembarambakkam tank, the inflow from the catchment areas of Adyar within Chennai and the surplus received from the other tanks,” he said.

He was treated with a wide range of Andhra delicacies including fish curry and sweets.
This was KCR’s second visit to Andhra in less than two months. Keeping aside all differences and bitterness of the movement for separate Telangana state, the TRS chief had participated in the foundation stone ceremony of new Andhra capital Amaravati near here in October. KCR is holding Chandi Yagam at his farm house at Erravalli in Medak district near here for the well-being of Telangana. He has already invited President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the fiveday rituals. About 4,000 priests and 1,500 Rutwiks will be performing the rituals in the mega event.

IPTL: Nadal downs Federer in thriller
The two living legends, with a combined jaw-dropping 31 Grand Slam victories to their name played the last match-up of the third and final day of the Delhi leg of the tournament IANS, NEW DELHI
R
oger Federer and Rafael Nadal exhibited glimpses of their time-tested brilliance with the racquet in front of overawed fans as India Aces defeated Obi UAE Royals 3019 in an International Premier Tennis League (IPTL) match here on December 12. The marquee showdown of the exhibition tournament, thought up by Mahesh Bhupathi and aimed at popularizing the game in non-frontline tennis countries, was the last match-up of the third and final day of the Delhi leg of the tournament. And the two living legends, with a combined jaw-dropping 31 Grand Slam victories to their name, did not disappoint. They first took guard in the men’s doubles match. Nadal teaming up with Rohan Bopanna, Federer pairing up with Marin Cilic. The Indo-Spanish pair won. But the “pure” moment arrived after it when the left they squared off on the opposite sides of the net. Aces already had an overwhelming 24-14 lead over Royals. Nadal led 23-11 in competitive head to head encounters. And they began with fierce intent, both charging to the net at every oppor-

Ex-Honduras football president in US to face corruption charges TEGUCIGALPA (HONDURAS): The former president of Honduras and of the country’s football federation Rafael Callejas has turned himself over to the United States authorities to face corruption allegations, according to media reports. According to Honduran Foreign Minister Arturo Corrales, Callejas travelled on December 14 morning to the US to face justice after the FIFA corruption scandal uncovered his alleged participation weeks ago, reports Xinhua. “Callejas decided to travel to the US and face the legal process in a correct way,” said Corrales and added that “under no circumstances was he handcuffed. He travelled under his own will,” Corrales said on
Monday about Callejas who was the president from 1990-1994. Corrales also said Callejas “travelled on a private flight” and that neither Honduran nor US authorities were involved. “The flight was paid by a group of friends, who told him this was the best way to help him support his decision,” added the minister.

saving two match points, to break back and force a shootout after 5-5 amidst incessant shouts of “Vamos Nadal” and “Come on, Federer”. The topsy-turvy fight again swung Nadal’s way as he went a 40 up in the tie-breaker. Federer mounted back to 5-4 but was
finally conquered at 7-4, conceding the set 6-5 after a hotly-contested 38 minutes. The frame-freezing moment of the day, however, arrived earlier when Nadal walked onto the court at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium to the rapturous applause of an appreciative crowd. The footfalls were kind even though the stands still weren’t full at the 15,000-capacity stadium despite the mouth-watering prospect of watching the two greatest players of modern tennis live. The Spaniard shook hands with all his Indian Aces team-mates and then the moment arrived when he walked up to the practicing Roger Federer, who was loosening up at the other side of the court, and exchanged pleasantries with his great rival much to the delight of the spectators. They then sent the crowd in a tizzy by to practicing together alongside each other in the same court. The expensive tickets bought by the fans expecting to witness such rare moments seemed, for once, justifiable and the wait worthwhile. An euphoric reception then awaited the two legends as the teams were introduced in the middle of the court amidst loud music.
PCB to give up on India-Pak series LAHORE: With the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) yet to come up with a definite response on the fate of the proposed bilateral series, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has finally decided to stop pursuing the matter. PCB chairman Shaharyar Khan wrote to the BCCI on December 10, asking the Indian board to come up with a decision on the series within the next two days. The PCB chief warned that if the series does not get the green light, Pakistan will boycott all their matches against India. The BCCI, however, is yet to respond and the PCB has decided it will announce December 14 its decision regarding giving up on the series. “Yes, we have not received a reply from the BCCI till December 12 evening, therefore, we are closing this chapter now. We will, however, make an announcement in this regard by December 14.” “We made every possible effort to play India and even changed the venue from the UAE to Sri Lanka on BCCI’s request, but our efforts went in vain. We signed an MoU with the BCCI last year and were sincere in playing cricket with them,” Shaharyar Khan was quoted as saying by Pakistan’s Dawn newspaper. “Our failure to materialize the series disappointed millions of cricket fans all over the world, especially in India and Pakistan.” Shaharyar Khan warned that the PCB would raise the issue with the International Cricket Council (ICC) and at the bilateral level. The PCB chief also said that it was difficult to make make arrangements for the series at a short notice and Pakistan should not be held responsible for its cancellation.
Akram against boycotting World T20 in India IANS, KARACHI
P
akistan legend Wasim Akram has advised the Pakistan Cricket Board against boycotting the World T20 Championships which is scheduled to take place in India next year. “The World T20 is an ICC event and we should participate in it at all costs. If we don’t it will harm us in the long run. Not playing in the tournament will only affect our players,” Akram said here. Akram also said that India’s delay in giving a green-light to the bilateral series should not be an issue for his country competing in the world event but added the Board of Control for Cricket in India should also give a clear answer if they would play series or not. “I realize that the Indians have
taken too much time over deciding on the bilateral series with Pakistan, but even if it does not happen now it will happen soon,” he said. “But yes, I think the Indian board should also give a clear answer whether they want to play
or not and put the issue aside.” “If India does not want to play with us fine we can also survive without playing them. But the problem of terrorism will not be finished even if we play or don’t play,” said the 49-year-old.

Arnold Schwarzenegger not part of ‘Enthiran 2’
Rajinikanth’s iconic style statements T
IANS, CHENNAI
he Terminator star Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was approached by the makers of superstar Rajinikanth-starrer Enthiran 2 to play the antagonist in the film, may not get to play the role as the deal failed to work out, a source has said.
Superstar Rajinikanth, who turned 65 on Dec 12, has been synonymous with style HARICHARAN PUDIPEDDI, CHENNAI
R
ajinikanth’s style statements, which have turned trendsetters over the years. From the way he flips his cigarette to his signature walk, he is known for his style in movies. Flipping cigarette: In Indian cinema, nobody can flip a cigarette to his lips like Rajinikanth and it remains his most elusive trick ever because he has constantly reinvented it. Although the star has stopped endorsing smoking on screen, his fans wait with bated breath to see him light a cigarette in films, even if it means for one last time. The walk: In Rajinikanth’s walk, you find pride and confidence of a man who rose to super-stardom against all odds. Wearing goggles: While many may consider his way of using a goggle peculiar, the style was still a hit among youngsters. Hairstyle: It’s quite possible that the star never required a comb, because he’d mostly flip his hair with his own hands with panache. The namaskar: When people do namaskar to greet others, their palms usually come together before the face or chest, but it goes sideways for Rajinikanth. It usually goes towards the right or left side of his chin. While the actor never did it on purpose, yet people started imitating it. The salute: There’s a flip in his salute, too. He flips his hand in a circular motion and stops at forehead to salute. Rajinikanth popularized it in his film Padayappa and although he never used it again in his career, people still remember it as one of his most stylish gestures.
“The team has finally decided to rope in a Bollywood actor to play the baddie. The deal with Arnold Schwarzenegger didn’t work out for various reasons. Hence, the makers decided to move on as the project was getting delayed,” a source from the film’s unit told IANS. One of the reasons why the deal with Schwarzenegger fell through was because of the star’s high remuneration of Rs.1.2 billion according to the source, A sequel to Tamil blockbuster Enthiran, the film also stars Amy Jackson, who will reportedly be playing a robot. To be directed by Shankar and produced by Lyca Productions, the project is set to go on floors later this month or early next year. Oscar winning composer A.R. Rahman has been roped in to create music for the film.

egendary actor Dilip Kumar was on December 13 honored with Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second highest civilian award, by Home Minister Rajnath Singh. The 93-year-old cine icon was bestowed with the honor at his residence here just two days after his birthday. He was presented the Padma Vibhushan medallion, a certificate and a shawl by Singh. Tears welled up in his eyes when he was honored with the Padma Vibhushan. “Overwhelmed today by the gesture of home minister @BJPRajnathSingh who flew to Mumbai specially to present me with the #PadmaVibhushan,” Dilip Kumar posted on Twitter. “Health did not allow me to travel to Delhi to receive the award from the President. CM @Dev_Fadnavis and Governor Vidyasagarji too came to wish me. Tearful moment
SRK positive about ‘Dilwale’ despite MNS threats
MUMBAI: Superstar Shah Rukh Khan is positive that “good” things are in store for his forthcoming release Dilwale, despite news that Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has asked people to boycott the movie. MNS has reportedly made the demand on the pretext that Shah Rukh has ignored the plight of farmers in Maharashtra, though he has provided financial aid of Rs.10 million to the Chennai flood victims. At an event to launch the song ‘Tukur tukur’ from his film, when the actor was asked about it, he said: “Please don’t talk about such things before the release of the film. But Inshallah, everything will be positive and good with our film”. Dilwale, directed by Rohit Shetty, is releasing on December 18 alongside Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani.

MUMBAI: Keep on inspiring, keep on getting healthy and hearty -- that was the emotion that surfaced on the digital platform on the 93rd birthday of Dilip Kumar on Friday. Members of the film fraternity like Lata Mangeshkar, Rishi Kapoor, Javed Akhtar and Subhash Ghai took to Twitter to wish the legendary actor many happy returns of the day. Here’s what the stars tweeted: Lata Mangeshkar: Greetings. It’s my elder brother Dilip Kumar’s birthday today. Hope god keeps our beloved great artist happy and healthy. I
t is the poster of this film which will probably catch your attention. It states; ‘The Silent Heroes - A Mahesh Bhatt film’. Crafty, but true to its words, the film is written and directed by a journalist-turnedfilm director, Mahesh Bhatt and not the legendary film maker of the same name. Nevertheless, the film, like the original Mahesh Bhatt’s films, touches an emotional chord. It is an inspirational tale of 13 deaf children, who abandon their basic mountaineering course to save the life of their injured and unconscious instructor. Stranded in the Himalayan
wilderness, two days and an eighthour trek away from humanity and with no other adult company, it is the resilient choices of these children, that make them the “Silent
Heroes.” With no renowned cast or crew, what holds your attention are the “differently abled” children who charm their way into the hearts of the audience with their natural per-
formances. But unlike films lik Taare Zameen Par and Stanley K Dabba, this film is treated like a adventure-thriller and offers som nail-biting moments too, especial in the Himalayan rapids. The visuals of Roopang Achary director of photography, need a spe cial mention. With moderate pro duction value, he has captured som underwater frames, effectively. The only issue with this straigh forward tale are the unwarrante sub-plots that complicate the narra tion. The director has obvious managed to extract good perfo mances from the children, who are treat to watch. —Troy Ribeir

Sikh prayer at Chicago Evening Club event BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- The annual Chicago Leadership Prayer Bre a k f a s t s p o n s o re d by Chicago Sunday Evening Club held at the Grand Ball Room of Chicago Hilton on Michigan Avenue on December 4 opened with a Sikh prayer of Thanksgiving. This was the first time in its 51 years of history that it included a Sikh prayer. The 90-minute breakfast event was attended by Governor State of Illinois Bruce Rauner, First lady Diana Rauner, President Cook County Board Toni Preckwinkle and more than 600 Chicago leaders from business corporations, religious, interfaith, civic, and non-profit service organizations. The Sikh prayer was performed by Rajinder Singh Mago who prayed to the One Universal God for the well being of all humanity. Mago is a longtime volunteer coordinator of mainstream community outreach at Sikh Religious Society based in Palatine Illinois. “Profound racism continues to plague our society. It’s reflected not just in who is detained or incarcerated, but who is shot and killed by the police on our streets,”
No stadium entry to Sikh Broncos fans
BY A STAFF WRITER AN DIEGO, CA -- Three Sikh Americans were allegedly harassed by security staff and denied entry to watch an NFL game in San Diego, Calif., on December 6 because they were wearing turbans. The three Indian American Denver Broncos fans, along with two other friends, were hoping to get into Qualcomm Stadium to watch the Broncos take on the Chargers, a game in which the Broncos won 17-3. One of the men denied entry was Verinder Malhi, who explained to a guard at the stadium that his religion prohibited him and his friends from removing their headgear. Malhi, who was not wearing a turban, was with a group of five, three of whom were wearing turbans. The guard, however, told the men that they would only be allowed inside if they were to do as they were told. The guard ultimately relented and allowed the men inside still wearing their turbans. However, on their way out, the group’s car was subjected to a search by a bomb squad after a call to police claimed the men were putting a bag in the trunk suspiciously. “Everybody is kind of confusing us with the turbans, because what you see on TV is mostly the terrorists, they wear turbans,” said Malhi.

said Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. While Gov. Bruce Rauner agreed that Chicago was facing a crisis, keynote speaker Rev. Shannon Kershner, pastor at the Fourth Presbyterian Church, expressed his concern over the ‘polarizing ways’ of political and public discourse at the local, state and national levels.
Chicago business and civic leaders established an annual Chicago Leadership Prayer Breakfast in 1964 for the purpose of gathering as an interfaith community to pray for the city, the nation, and the world. The Chicago Evening Club has the principal responsibility for organizing the Prayer Breakfast.

BY A STAFF WRITER ERSEY CITY, NJ -- An Indian-American woman from Jersey City, New Jersey, was among six motorists who were indicted last week for allegedly filing crash claims against insurance policies they obtained after the accidents. Rajinder Kaur, 35, like the other motorists, was charged by a state grand jury with one count of third-degree insurance fraud for allegedly submitting claims for crashes that occurred before their policies were in effect. The alleged crimes were not connected in any way. If convicted, each of the motorists faces up to five years in prison and $15,000 in fines, according to a press statement by New Jersey Acting Attorney General John J. Hoffman. Each of the vehicles was involved in an accident and at some point after the accidents, the defendants purchased auto insurance. Within days or months of obtaining insurance, the defendants allegedly filed claims for those prior accidents. Kaur filed her claim with Government Employees Insurance Company while the remaining defendants filed their claims with Progressive Garden State Insurance Company. “Crash-and-buy schemes are one of the most common insurance fraud scams in the country. Like any auto fraud, these scams drive up insurance rates for honest policy holders,”

BY A STAFF WRITER RAND RAPIDS, MI -- A Michigan store clerk was called a “terrorist” and shot in the face during a terrifying robbery. The 34-year-old, named only as Tony, was confronted by a man carrying a long gun as he worked. The man entered the store in Grand Rapids just before midnight on December 13 and demanded cash from the till. “Put your hands up and don’t look at me,” the man demanded after storming the store. But as Tony, who is of Indian descent, prepared to hand over the bag of cash, the vicious robber forced him into a stock room. He then put the gun in Tony’s mouth and called him a “terrorist” and “a member of ISIS.” The robber then said he “used to shoot people like you all the time in Iraq,” Tony later told the police. And when the clerk fought back, the gun went off and he was shot in the cheek. “He’s very lucky. It could have been a lot worse,” said store manager Gurleen Kaur. Kaur, who is also of Indian descent, said she was upset by the racist element of the incident. The police are treating the case as an armed robbery, and will need to investigate further to determine if the incident was a hate crime.

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL-- Pakistan stands at the crossroads of the world where the cultures of the Central Asia, the Middle East, and South Asia meet. For centuries, the ‘silk route’, through Pakistan, was the main route for trade in silk, spices, and other commodities and exchanges in ideas, skills, and religious beliefs, across Europe and Asia. This was stated by Faisal Niaz Tirmizi, Consul General of Pakistan at a gathering of International Baccalaureate Students and Faculty Members, organized by Morgan Park High School of Chicago. Tirmizi, while giving a presentation on “Economy, Social Systems, and Culture of Pakistan”, said that Pakistan’s economy is all set to embark on a higher growth trajectory due to implementation of stabilization policies and marked improvement in macroeconomic indicators. He said: “Our government is fully committed to economic growth of the country and we have already achieved the set goals of economic boost and will achieve desired economic progress in coming years too by following the vigilant economic policies”. Tirmizi said that Pakistan had positioned itself for global leadership in the realm of education, taking into consideration the present-day fiercely-competitive world of

Las Vegas surgeon given a clean chit
Dr Jaswinder Grover
BY A STAFF WRITER AS VEGAS, NV-- Orthopedic spine surgeon Dr. Jaswinder Grover was dismissed on October 27 from a civil lawsuit filed in California earlier this year by the State of California and several insurance companies with broad ranging allegations, including the use of fake hardware, against hospitals and doctors all across the country. The suit was filed in February and unsealed in May. The lawsuit named several hospitals in Las Vegas as defendants as well as two Las Vegas orthopedic surgeons including Grover, an Indian American surgeon. On October 27, all allegations against Grover were dismissed by plaintiffs, voluntarily, and with prejudice. Grover’s Las Vegas attorney, Donald Campbell, remarked that a plaintiff’s “dismissal with prejudice” of an action prior to its service upon a named defendant was “highly unusual” and is indicative of the defendant having been erroneously named. “Understandably, we have always been concerned that such accusations could incite unnecessary anxiety and concern amongst our patients. We have never, and would never compromise patient care. I look forward to moving on, focusing on our patients, and Nevada Spine Clinic’s mission to provide excellence in care for patients who suffer from disorders of the spine.”

education and work. Towards this, he added, Pakistan had been according a sharper focus on different essential aspects of higher education, especially its diversification, high-end quality, and accessibility to the best and brightest students from all strata. The scholarly presentation by Tirmizi was followed by a highly-spirited and informative one-on-one discussion about a number of key issues relating to Pakistan, including its economic scenario, education system, culture
and heritage, tourism potential, etc. Tirmizi underscored the need for further diversifying and enriching the existing mechanism of student- and faculty-exchange between educational institutions of Pakistan and the US. He invited the authorities of the Chicago Public School system to establish a vibrant mechanism of student- and faculty-exchange with leading educational institutions in Pakistan.
Better healthcare for hepatitis B patients BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- The Asian Health Coalition (AHC) has announced the launch of a patient navigator guide designed to help improve the capacity of healthcare providers and communities to increase timely identification and care for individuals with hepatitis B infection. The guide was developed as a cooperative effort between AHC and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in consultation with the University of Chicago Medicine. An estimated 1.2 million persons in the US have chronic hepatitis B infection, and this is also the most common risk factor for liver cancer. About two-thirds of persons with chronic HBV infection are foreign-born and originate from countries in Asia and Africa. Individuals chronically infected with hepatitis are 100 times more likely to develop
C
liver cancer than uninfected people because the virus directly and repeatedly attacks the liver, which over time can lead to progressive liver damage and liver cancer. Patient navigation programs have been shown to improve care and patient outcomes through one-on-one education and assistance from initial screening through diagnosis and treatment. Fo r e x a m p l e , n a v i g a t o r s a r r a n g e appointments and follow-up care, provide language translation or interpretation services, coordinate insurance paperwork, help find childcare during a patient’s treatment,
and provide transportation to and from appointments. “Patient navigation breaks down barriers that too many individuals face in their battle against the chronic disease,” said Edwin Chandrasekar, AHC executive director. Although traditionally used in the cancer continuum of care, patient navigation and related coordination services have been applied to diabetes, palliative care and HIV/AIDS. “AHC has successfully adapted the patient navigator model to serve the needs of foreignborn individuals with chronic hepatitis B. “We believe there are complementary roles of clinical and community-based patient navigation when it comes to hepatitis B treatment and we want to share this resource as a reference for health systems and community organizations seeking to train individuals to serve as hepatitis patient navigators in both clinical and non-clinical settings”.

COMMUNITY NEWS Indians in St Louis rise to ComEd donates $25k to local nonprofits occasion to aid flood-hit C FRIDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2015
BY A STAFF WRITER T LOUIS, MO – The first phase of a fundraising campaign to help the flood victims of Chennai and other places of Tamil Nadu was held recently at Mahatma Gandhi Center hosted by Tamil Sangam of Missouri. Others lending a helping hand include India Association of St. Louis, Telugu Association of St. Louis (TAS),Ohmkaram Association of St. Louis, Dhvani Foundation, Sangeetha Association of St. Louis, Gujarati Samaj, St. Louis Tamil Church, St. Louis Marathi Mandal, Sangama St.Louis Kannada Association, Asha of St. Louis, Asian American Chamber of e-commerce, STLVA Chapter and ACA (American Cricket Association). It has been nearly a week since the catastrophic floods brought the life in the beautiful metropolitan city (Singara Chennai) and other parts like Cuddalore and Kanchipuram to a complete halt. The amount of damage caused is unprecedented and many experts suspect that the total impact will run into the tens of millions of dollars. Over 300 people have died and several thousands are stranded and suffered crippling losses from the debacle. People have no access to food, water and very basic amenities and the city needs immediate relief measures it can get. The objective of the campaign is to help the victims to get their lost life back by soliciting the funds from generous donors and channelize the money to different charity organizations like Abdul Kalam Vision India Movement, Ramakrishna Mission Vidyapith, etc. to meet their long- and short-term goals to expedite the process. Hundreds of people turned in to show the support and solidarity to the people back home who have shouldered the heaviest toll, prayed

to Almighty to give enough courage to bear the loss and to shower His blessings for the normalcy to return soon. The successful campaign witnessed enthusiastic donors keeping the volunteers at the collection desk busy throughout the time. The presidents and representatives of the respective organizations participated in the campaign were called upon to the stage to share their views and thoughts about the disaster and the various that could be provided at this tough time. The collected funds were updated and donors were thanked for their support at regular intervals by announcing it in the stage. Videos and presentations were continuously displayed to show the nature of the disaster. The campaign was generously supported and sponsored by US Wide Financial, Sun Copies, Seema, Asian Spices, Bombay Bazar and special thanks were given to Mayuri, Paradise, Anes and Sam’s club, what with snacks, coffee and cookies being made available to all attendees throughout the campaign. With the overwhelming response and support from all Indian communities and associations in St. Louis, the organizers of the campaign were able to raise the collection amount towards the flood relief to 42,000 $.
BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- This year, ComEd wanted to make the holiday season a little brighter for some local nonprofits and the people they serve. Over the last several weeks, ComEd has given out $25,000 to 10 local nonprofits to help them better assist people who may be struggling to pay their electric bills. The Nonprofit Giving Campaign, which was launched as an extension of ComEd’s CARE financial assistance program this fall, was developed to offer relief to organizations and individuals who may have been impacted by state budget cuts. Each of the 10 selected organizations received $2,500 in ComEd gift checks, in amounts from $10 - $100, to distribute to their clients as needed. Ed Jacob, Executive Director at Franciscan Outreach in Wicker Park, said that a little bit of help at the right time could make a big difference when keeping up with one’s finances. “It’s often just a small bump on the road that causes one to lose his or her way financially. We have found that if we can intervene early enough and provide them the right type of support, people are able to get right back on track. These ComEd gift checks

will make a difference to someone who may have fallen on hard times and can use some assistance.” In addition to Franciscan Outreach, ComEd provided gift checks this season to: Casa Central, Chicago Urban League, Chinese American Service League, El Valor Corporation, Meals on Wheels Chicago, Metropolitan Family Services, RefugeeOne Chicago, Society of St. Vincent De Paul Chicago, and World Relief Chicago. “ComEd cares about our customers and communities and we are pleased, particularly in this season of sharing, to partner with these 10 local not-for-profit organizations which provide vital assistance services to the communities we serve,” said Anne Pramaggiore, president and CEO, ComEd. ComEd gift certificates are available yearround and can be purchased by congregations and charities at a discounted rate. The gift certificates do not expire, and are available in amounts of $10, $25, $50 and $100.
ICN academy students join poverty project
Mr. Kashif Fakhruddin, Principal, ICN Al-Falah Academy and Mr. Aadil Fareed, President, ICN along with ICN Al-Falah team members and volunteers.
BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Students of the ICN Al-Falah Academy of the Islamic Center of Naperville (ICN), in collaboration with Muslims against Hunger and Hunger Van, made 500 hot, healthy, and nutritious meals and delivered them to poor people living under bridges, at train stations, and in homeless shelters in and around Chicago. All the students from Kindergarten to high school grades, both boys and girls, were assisted by their teachers in this project. Kashif Fakhruddin, principal, ICN AlFalah Academy said that the exercise was of great help in practically demonstrating to students the importance of values such as compassion, giving, and empathy, which were taught to them as part of a course, called ‘Connections’. “Creating awareness about the problems of hunger, poverty, and homelessness among the students at a very young age will be a stepping stone in enabling them to find enduring solutions to these problems when they grow up”, said Aadil Fareed, president, ICN. Fareed added that active involvement of students of the ICN Al-Falah Academy in several socially-relevant projects would go a long way in understanding live problems in their true and total frame of reference, developing the right attitudes, and ultimately emerging as responsible citizens.

Fareed stated that education for the sake of education alone had become a thing of the past. He, therefore, called upon students and teachers to use education to solve the burning problems of the society in general and those of its weaker sections in particular. Shoaib Khadri, secretary, ICN, said that as Muslims, it was not just a social responsibility but a religious obligation to take care of the needy and it was important to instil this sense of compassion in children at a young age. “At ICN Al-Falah Academy, we do not depend solely on lecture method. Instead, we use a variety of other innovative techniques, including workshops, field trips, projects, assignments, community service, etc.”, said Anjum Mohsinuddin, a ‘Connections’ team member who is also active in the Special Needs Students Program. “A fusion of the theoretical and practical inputs goes a long way not only in enriching the academic profile of students but also in developing their well-rounded personalities”, he added. “The very thought that our projects have the potential to brighten up the faces of poor persons energizes us to participate in them enthusiastically”, said Hibba Hoda, a 6th grade student. “While attending the classes is important in its own right, the communityoriented projects bring us face-to-face with a number of learning opportunities”, opined many a student unanimously.

inter air affects our skin in several ways and makes it dry and itchy. This is when the magical properties of cocoa, banana and mulberry act best by moisturizing skin from deep within, say experts. Cocoa extracted from cacao beans, is a moisturizer, nourisher, skin repairing agent and an excellent antioxidant. “Cocoa butter contains fatty acids, which improves skin moisture retention and elasticity. It is effective both as an every day moisturizer for all skin types and in easing skin problems such as eczema.
“It is also very effective when used on difficult areas like elbows, knees and ankles as it reduces dryness,” Vaseline skincare expert Aparna Santhanam said in a statement. “Cocoa butter as a daily moisturizer helps to even skin texture and leave skin feeling smooth. It is rich in anti-oxidants, omega 3 and omega 6. These are all good anti-aging, stretch mark and anti-scar ingredients,” she said. Disha Meher, national expert skin and nails, Lakmé Salon, says that it is advisable that women opt for fruit-based products and services, especially fruits such as banana, apples, and oranges that are rich in vitamins, potassium and iron. “In fact, banana is one of the best fruit moisturizers and is known to nourish and revitalize skin,” she added. Sangeeta Velaskar from Kaya Limited, believes in the power of mulberry. “Mulberry extract is a powerhouse of nutrients and is an excellent source of protein. Mulberry is a huge source of iron, calcium, Vitamins A, C, E and K, folate, thiamine, pyridoxine, niacin and fiber as well. The anti-oxidants found in mulberry also repair free radicals. Mulberry extracts are ideal for the winters,” she said.

What’s more, narcissism can even be induced in customers through marketing techniques, the researchers said. I rent states of mind to exploit the largely untapped potential of mass customization systems,” said study co-author professor David Sprott from Washington State University (WSU). The researchers conducted four studies showing how narcissism

Another study demonstrated that firms can put consumers into a temporary narcissistic state of mind with marketing techniques.
t is the disease that makes you unhappy and not the other way round, say researchers, adding that the widespread but mistaken belief that unhappiness makes you ill came from studies that had simply confused people. In a study comprising one million British women, researchers found that happiness itself has no direct effect on mortality. “Illness makes you unhappy but unhappiness itself doesn’t make you ill. We found no direct effect
of unhappiness or stress on mortality, even in a 10-year study of a million women,” said lead author Bette Liu, now at University of New South Wales, Australia. Life-threatening poor health can cause unhappiness, and for this reason unhappiness is associated with increased mortality. In addition, smokers tend to be unhappier than non-smokers. However, after taking into account several factors, they investigators found that unhappiness itself was no longer associated with increased mortality.

ntensive bouts of exercise can lead to significant and progressive decline in sleep quality, says a new study. The researchers also found that a high carbohydrate regime reduces some, but not all, of the effects of hard training. For the study, the scientists from Loughborough University in England studied the effects of two nine-day periods of heavy training on 13 highly trained cyclists. The researchers monitored the athletes’ moods, sleep patterns and performance before, during and
after exercise. To determine whether diets could counter the effects of any sleep deprivation, the athletes were also given high or moderate amounts of carbohydrate throughout the study, though none of them knew which. The researchers discovered that even as little as nine days of intense training can cause ‘significant and progressive decline in sleep quality’. “Sleep efficiency was significantly reduced during the intensified training period,” the researchers observed, with the number of times the athletes woke throughout the night significantly increased.

f you are already showing higher than normal blood sugar levels as you spend more and more hours in office, enrol for an intervention program at your workplace if it offers one. According to a new study, employees enrolled in a workplace intervention program as a group lost more weight, showed greater reductions in fasting blood sugar and ate less fat than employees who received only written health guidelines for diabetes prevention. “Adults spend a large portion of their time at work. This study
shows that it is not only feasible to implement a comprehensive lifestyle intervention at the work site, it is an effective way to prevent disease,” said lead author professor Carla Miller from Ohio State University. The employees had been identified through a workplace screening as having prediabetes. This condition increases risk for type-2 diabetes. “Participants who attended more group discussion sessions and monitored their food and physical activity lost more weight, and weight loss is crucial to prevent type 2 diabetes,” she said.
