NSA’s spying powers curtailed US Senate blocks bill on National Security Agency’s phone records collection will lose systematic access to newly created calling records by Americans, at least temporarily, after June 1. The Senate will reconvene on May 31 to try again.

T

he US Senate has rejected a bill that would curb the country’s National Security Agency (NSA)’s bulk collection of telephone data, leaving it uncertain the fate of the once-secret program ahead of its expiration at the end of the month. The bill, USA Freedom Act, which would have ended the NSA’s bulk collection but preserved its ability to search the records held by phone companies on a case-by-case basis, fell three votes short of the 60 votes needed for passage in the Senate on May 24. The bill, backed by President Barack Obama was passed overwhelmingly in the House of Representatives early this month. After Senate’s rejection of the

program, was also blocked in the Senate. The disarray in Congress appeared to significantly increase the chances that the government

T Hillary Clinton’s 296 emails released WASHINGTON: The US State Department has published online 296 emails from former secretary of state Hillary Clinton’s account. The emails were sent and received in the aftermath of the September 2012 attacks on an American diplomatic facility in Benghazi, Libya, which killed four Americans, including an ambassador. “The e-mails we release today do not change the essential facts or our understanding of the events before, during, or after the attacks,” the department tweeted after the emails publishing announcement, Xinhua reported. It is reported that the Web address for the first batch of emails was:http://foia.state.gov/search/resul ts.aspx?collection= clinton_email. The 296 emails are part of the 30,000 that Clinton turned over to the State Department from her private email server. Clinton was reported to have used this email server to conduct both private and public businesses during her time at the State Depart-

ment. At the same time, the department is reviewing other Clinton emails for later release. The State Department initially set to release the emails in January 2016. However, a federal judge instead ordered the department to release the emails on a rolling basis and they should be made publicly in batches before then. Earlier this week in Iowa, the former First Lady asked the department to speed up the release, saying “nobody has a bigger interest in getting (the emails) released than I do”. On a second bid for the presidency, the emails have threatened to become a major distraction for Hillary Clinton. A congressional committee is investigating why Clinton used her private email server rather than the government’s offer. Whether the archive she turned over to the State Department is complete is also being probed.

he impressive performance of Indian Americans at the Scripps National Spelling Bee could be due to their perseverance, hard work, well-educated parents and a milestone documentary that made them realize “we could do this”, says a media report. “How hard a child works is a very individual factor... But what might be happening (with IndianAmerican contestants) is that there might be perseverance for the National Spelling Bee goal over a longer period of time,” the Washington Post quoted Paige Kimble, the Bee’s longtime director, as saying. The contest, which has been won by Indian Americans for seven years in a row and all but four of the last 15 years, got underway on May 26. In fact, Kimble’s analysis

could not be misplaced as of all the Indian American champions in the last 15 years, only one, Pratyush Buddiga, won the contest in his first attempt in 2002. But Kimble is concerned about the racial aspect of the contest. Last year’s champions had to face a barrage of racist comments on social media websites that “indicate that we have a long way to go as a country in embracing all of our immigrant population”, Kimble said.

would be changed to prohibit bulk collection by NSA of metadata charting telephone calls made by Americans. While the bill would take the government out of the collection business, it would not deny it access to the information. The debate over the federal program became intense after the government’s extensive surveillance efforts were exposed by Edward Snowden, a former NSA contractor. It was complicated by a federal appeals court ruling this month that found the NSA’s bulk collection of phone records illegal. The odd collection of advocates for change underscored a changing tide in post-September 11 America, where privacy concerns have become as important as national security interests for many people.

Obama offers federal help for Texas flood WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama has pledged federal assistance in the rescue and recovery of Texas’ catastrophic flooding. “I assured Gov. (Greg) Barack Obama Abbott that he could count on the help of the federal government,” Obama told reporters on May 26 in the White House, “I will anticipate that there will be some significant requests made to Washington. My pledge to him is that we will expedite those requests.” Obama noted that Federal Emergency Management Agency personnel are already on the ground in Texas, and they will coordinate with state authorities. Rainstorms triggered floods through Oklahoma and Texas, killing at least nine people and left 30 people missing.

AAP legislators criticize Union Home Ministry order giving Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung the final say in matters pertaining to services, police, law and order, during an emergency two-day assembly session called by Delhi government IANS, NEW DELHI

resolution against the Centre’s decree giving Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung the final say in transfers and postings of bureaucrats was moved on May 26 in the Delhi assembly while an AAP lawmaker demanded that state legislatures should have the power to impeach governors. Buoyed by the Delhi High Court’s observation that the Lt. Governor must act on the advice of the council of ministers, Aam Aadmi Party legislators took turns to criticize the Narendra Modi government’s order giving Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung the final say in matters pertaining to services, police, law and order. The May 21 notification had also stripped Delhi’s Anti Corruption Branch of its power to act against central government employees.

Deputy CM Manish Sisodia speaks in the assembly as Kejriwal looks on.

On the first day of the two-day special session of the assembly called by the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP government to discuss the home ministry’s notification, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia moved the resolution, saying the Centre had encroached upon the

at the Centre was “unconstitutionally trying to impose President’s Rule in Delhi”. “This government has taken corruption head-on and achieved unprecedented success. The Centre is trying to thwart Delhi government’s attempts,” Sisodia added. Taking the tussle with Jung a notch higher, AAP legislator Adarsh Shashtri demanded that a resolution be passed in the assembly to amend the Constitution to enable state legislatures to impeach governors and Lt. Governors. “We should pass a resolution asking parliament to review the recommendations of the Sarkaria Commission and the articles 155 and 156 of the Constitution to allow state legislatures to have the power to impeach governors and Lt. Governors,” Shastri said. AAP lawmaker Somnath Bharti moved a private member’s resolution against the MHA notification.

The Hyderabad Meteorological Centre also warned that the heat wave may continue till Wednesday. Coastal Andhra Pradesh continued to reel under severe heat wave conditions. Jangamaheswara Puram

VHP wants ban on rafting in Ganga

HARIDWAR: The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) wants a ban on white water rafting in the Ganga as it gives rise to “obscene activities” on riverbanks. During a two-day meet of its national advisory board in Haridwar, the VHP leaders said the adventure sport also “led to many illegal activities” in the holy town of Rishikesh. They alleged that young people of both sexes come to these rafting camps, “mingle, drink and indulge in objectionable activities on the banks of the holy river, where sadhus and sants gather to meditate”. The seers at the VHP meet also asked the government to take serious steps for preventing factories and cities along the holy river from discharging their sewage into the holy river.

The present Lok Sabha has 281 members from the BJP and 44 from Congress, the main opposition party. With 52 MPs, Uttar Pradesh tops the list of states with zero use of MPLAD money, followed by Maharashtra and Bihar. Parliamentarians from Tamil Nadu, Kerala and West Bengal do better with most recommending works under the scheme. What MPs can do? Modi, Shah have suggestions: Drinking water, sanitation, electricity, roads, com-

munity shelters — these are the kind of things MPs can spend their annual fund on. Delivered in tranche of Rs.25 million, the MPLADs money is meant to fund things that fall in between the administrative cracks. If the money is not spent in one year, it can be spent during another. MPLADS works are recommended by an MP, approved by the district collector and implemented by local authorities. Modi has urged parliamentarians to use MPLADS funds to build toilets, in line with Clean India Mission. Many ignore appeals, especially from large states.

“Even in kindergarten, he was pretty ahead, a few years ahead -and then it just went from there,” Abraham’s mother, Taji Abraham, a veterinarian, told KCRA-TV. One of the best aspect of his graduation was his college graduation cap. The boy wrote his favorite Toy Story quote on the top of the cap:”2 Infinity and Beyond.” He later thanked his parents for their contributions to his learning — and posted several photos of himself and his family on Twitter having a meal at “my favorite restaurant’ to celebrate his graduation. Abraham was just four-yearsold, when he was accepted to MENSA; a group for people whose Intelligence Quotient (IQ) is in the top two percent of the population. His younger sister aged four also became a member. During his childhood, he wrote astronomy blogs for NASA. Abraham is planning to take an eightweek Calculus II course this summer and also a family vacation.

Neurobiologist Sunil Gandhi and colleagues from University of California-Irvine successfully recreated a critical juvenile period in the brains of adult mice and in the

process they corrected a sight disorder with which the mice were afflicted with. The scientists achieved this by transplanting a certain type of embryonic neuron into the brains of adult mice. The transplanted neurons express gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) cells that aid in motor control, vision and many other cortical functions. The researchers pointed out that much like older muscles lose their youthful flexibility, older brains lose plasticity — the rapid and robust changes in

Scientist turns blood into nerve cells TORONTO: Stem cell scientists led by Mick Bhatia from the McMaster University have successfully converted adult human blood cells into neural cells. The team directly converted adult human blood cells to both central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) neurons as well as neurons in the peripheral nervous system (rest of the body) that are responsible for pain, temperature and itch perception. This means that how a person’s nervous system cells react and respond to stimuli can be determined from his blood. “Now we can take blood samples and make the main cell types of neurological systems — the central ner-

New York woman jailed for 24 years NEW YORK: A New York woman who said she hates Hindus and killed a Hindu man by pushing him under a metro train has been sentenced to 24 years in prison. When Erika Menendez was arrested after killing Sunnando Sen in December 2012, she told the police: “I hate Muslims and the Hindus.” State Supreme Court Justice Gregory L. Lasak, sentenced Menendez calling her actions “a particularly brutal homicide”. Richard Brown, the district attorney for New York’s Queens borough, who announced the sentencing on Wednesday, said, “The defendant’s actions clearly show that she is a threat to society and deserving of today’s sentence.” Menendez had earlier told a New York Post reporter that she had been attacking Hindus and Muslims. “I just wanted to hurt Muslims and Hindus ever since the World Trade Center terror attack by Al Qaeda in 2001,” she told the reporter. “I’ve been beating up Muslims and Hindus for a long time,” she said.

Overseas Indians comprise Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs). According to a cabinet communique, the cabinet approved redefining an NRI as an individual resident outside India who is a citizen of India or is an OCI cardholder under Section 7 (A) of the

Citizenship Act, 1955, while PIOs who have registered under the August 19, 2002, central government notification “will be deemed

KABUL: Ongoing clashes between Taliban and Islamic State militants in western Afghanistan have left at least 27 insurgents dead and 20 other people injured, officials told Efe news agency on May 25. Afghan military spokesperson Mohamad Hanif Rezaey specified that 15 IS militants and 12 from the Taliban were killed in fighting on May 24 afternoon in three areas within Farah province’s Khak-eSafid district. Among the injured were 13 IS members and seven from Taliban ranks. “Taliban fighters captured alive 12 alleged IS members, including four women of foreign nationalities, however their nationalities are still uncertain,” the spokesperson explained, adding that Afghan security forces would not intervene unless civilians become involved. Armed feuds broke out just a few hours after NATO’s mission in Afghanistan warned of the growing IS presence in the country, while the government has been at war with the Taliban for 14 years. The spokesperson of the Atlantic alliance’s Resolute Support mission, Armando Perez, told Efe on May 24 that although the development of the insurgent group was still unstable, “it continues to have aspirations for the entire region” and has been recruiting actively.

ne month after the April 25 earthquake that killed at least 8,700 people and injured over 70,000 in Nepal, the Himalayan nation is still struggling to overcome the trauma exacerbated by numerous aftershocks and slow relief distribution due to the difficult geographical terrain. The 7.9-magnitude earthquake rattled 39 of the mountainous nation’s 75 districts — 14 were badly hit with over half a million houses destroyed and over 300,000 houses partially damaged, according to the Red Cross. Over 1.1 households were affected, and 17,000 people injured and

even in capital Kathmandu and remote Singati village of Rasuwa district.

Thousands of people who were rendered homeless continue to live in open spaces in Kathmandu and elsewhere due to fear of aftershocks while around one million people have come to Kathmandu seeking safer refuge. Though Nepal is yet to prepare a post-disaster needs assessment, a preliminary estimate of the Nepal government shows that the quake has damaged property worth $5 billion. For the developing nation — which was trying to overcome the trauma of a decade-long Maoist insurgency — recapturing an annual growth rate of 5 percent is now going to be a target hard to achieve, said the Manila-based Asian Development Bank (ADB).

A cabinet statement said a voluntary recruitment drive was necessary to fill shortages in squads in the west of Anbar province. Thousands have fled Ramadi since its capture by IS on May 18. fghanistan’s National Directorate of Security (NDS) and Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that will see both countries working closely together to fight terror, officials have confirmed. In addition, Afghanistan and Pakistan will fight terrorism jointly and both institutions will investigate the accused behind any terror incident within their respective countries. The agreement signed in Kabul last week was also officially announced by the Pakistani InterServices Public Relations (ISPR) via its social network late on May 18 night. “MoU signed by ISI and NDS includes intelligence sharing, complementary and coordinated intel operations on respective sides,” the ISPR tweeted. The firstof-its-kind deal between the two

intelligence agencies followed the May 12 visit to Kabul by Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. The signing of the ISI-NDS agreement was the latest in a series of steps that Pakistan and Afghanistan have taken since the installation of the National Unity govt. “The memorandum of understanding between Afghanistan and Pakistan is not a new thing. In the past, both institutions had such agreements, but now the focus of this agreement is mostly on jointly fighting terrorism,” says Ajmal Abedi, spokesperson of Afghan President Ashraf Ghani.

address the threat of IS in Iraq and Syria,” the White House said in a statement on May 19. Obama received information “about the latest developments in Iraq and support to Iraqi security forces and tribal fighters that respond to the situation in the province of Al Anbar”. He also praised Iraq’s decision “to accelerate the training and equipping of local tribes in co-ordination with authorities in Al Anbar, increase Iraqi army recruitment and train the local police,” said the White House.

BEIRUT: At least 170 Islamic State (IS) militants have been killed since Sunday in airstrikes carried out by the US-led international coalition in addition to Kurdish attacks in the Syrian northeastern province of al-Hasakah, Kurdish officials said on May 19. Naser Haj Mansur, spokesperson for the defense department in the Kurdish autonomous region of alJazira in al-Hasakah, said that “between 170 and 200 IS members were killed in coalition bombings and in attacks of the Kurdish forces and Christian militias on the ground”. However, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, or SOHR, said the majority of jihadists were killed in the air strikes, as the Kurdish troops

days A more detailed announcement could come within days. President Barack Obama has been briefed by advisers and “reaffirmed the strong US support” for Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi. Pro-government forces and police officials said that they had thwarted an IS attack to the east of Ramadi overnight, near to where Shia militias have been deployed ahead of a counter-offensive. Witnesses earlier reported seeing Islamic State militants setting up defensive positions in the city itself. After a Council of Ministers meeting on May 19, the Iraqi

merely “searched” the territory after the air raids. The Pentagon, which typically provides casualty figures, did not confirm the information. Mansur added that the attacks occurred on the outskirts of the town of Tel Tamr, where IS fighters have been clashing with Syrian Kurdish militias and their allies since February. The Kurds made progress on May 19, taking control of the town of Talon, south of Tel Tamr. However, Mansur added that there were still a dozen villages in the hands of IS in the southern outskirts of Tel Tamr, despite the siege by the Syrian Kurdish militias.

prime minister vowed to prosecute forces who fled the city in the wake of the IS attacks. Abadi said the Iraqi people needed to “stand unified” and called for voluntary recruitment to the army. He also pledged to recruit and arm tribal fighters. The council also issued a fresh plea to the international community to help Iraq’s “war against terrorism”. The loss of Ramadi, capital of western Anbar province, is a blow for both the Iraqi government and US strategy in the area, says the BBC’s Jim Muir in Beirut.

13 militants killed in Pakistan ISLAMABAD: At least 13 suspected militants were killed on May 20 in airstrikes conducted by military fighter jets in Pakistan’s North Waziristan Tribal Agency, it was officially announced. An official statement issued by the Inter Service Public Relations (ISPR) said five hideouts of the militants were also destroyed in the air attack. The Pakistan Army launched Zarb-e-Azb, a comprehensive antimilitant operation, in 2014 against foreign and local terrorists who were hiding in sanctuaries in the North Waziristan tribal region. The operation was launched a week after a brazen insurgent attack on the country’s busiest airport in Karachi. The tribal region, which borders Afghanistan, has been used as a base by militants over the years. According to the ISPR, troops have been deployed along its border with neighboring agencies to block any movement of terrorists in and out of the region.

nocking down thousands of multi-storeyed buildings damaged in the April 25 earthquake and subsequent aftershocks — which are posing serious threat to life and property in urban areas of Nepal — has became a tall order for the Nepal government to manage. On the one hand, the buildings are posing serious threat to life and property and on the other, government officials maintain that they

do not have proper and adequate technology and expertise to knock them down. On May 13, the Nepal government formed a team led by the ministry of urban development (MoUD) along with the Nepal Army (NA) to demolish quake-damaged buildings in Kathmandu and Lalitpur districts in the Kathmandu Valley. 500 buildings in Kathmandu and Lalitpur districts needed to be demolished in the first phase. The delegation led by the minister explained the Google team about the water grid project and how the same duct lines are going to be utilized to provide fiber optic cables to every household. Google has embarked on a similar project called Google Fiber, which has been piloted in eight cities in the US. It has agreed to study the Telangana model in detail through their country team in India and explore the possibility of contributing to this project, the statement added.

We will take a call in the interest of cricket,” Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Anurag Thakur said here on May 25. “We will not take a call in the interest of broadcasters. We will take a call in the interest of the fans. If the fans are not interested, there is no point continuing with it.” The CLT20 is an annual international T20 competition played between the top domestic teams from major cricketing nations. Thakur also said the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, a domestic T20 tournament, will be held before the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction from next year. Asked about media speculations on the coach and director of the Indian team ahead of the trip to Bangladesh, Thakur said: “We have selected a team for Bangladesh. We will decide on the support staff soon.” India will play one Test and three One-Day Internationals (ODI) during their trip to Bangladesh from June 10 to 24.

ormer Australia fast bowler Brett Lee on May 26 said former India skipper Sourav Ganguly would do “a great job” if made India’s new head coach. Following Duncan Fletcher’s departure, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will announce its new coach and revamped support staff prior to the team departing for the tour of Bangladesh on June 7. “I think he would do a great job because he’s got a great wealth of

knowledge behind him with so many games of Test match cricket, one-day cricket and Twenty20 cricket,” Lee Sourav Ganguly was quoted as saying by Cricket Australia (CA). “He’s been there and done it all. Will that make him a good coach? I don’t know. If he’s hungry for it, with his wealth of knowledge he could definitely pass it on. Having the right balance as a coach is the most important thing,” the former pacer said.

Saina set to defend Australian Open SYDNEY: Star Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal is all set to defend her women’s singles title when she takes to the court at the $750,000 Australian Open Superseries, which began here on May 26. World No.1 Saina has been seeded No.2. and had defeated Spaniard Carolina Marin — who later won the World Championships — to lift the trophy last year. This time she will open her campaign against a yet to be decided qualifier. Meanwhile, World No.11 P.V. Sindhu is unseeded and has a tough opening match against former World Champion

Yihan Wang of China. Though the twotime World Championship bronze medallist has beaten her formidable opponent once, she had to bite the dust the other three times when the two Asians met.

drawn the spotlight is Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) chinaman bowler Bradd Hogg. At 44 — the oldest player in IPL history — the Australian made full use of the limited chances he was offered. Besides bamboozling the batsmen, he was also a livewire on the field.

Playing just his second game this season, Hogg took 4/29 to enable KKR canter towards a seven-wicket victory over CSK at home. CSK all-rounder Dwayne Bravo, who took 26 wickets to win the purple cap, is also no youngster. At 32, the Trinidadian was skipper MS Dhoni’s go-to-man and his knack to pick up wickets at crucial junctures powered the team to their sixth IPL final, although they faltered at the last hurdle losing to Mumbai Indians by 41 runs. Well, it’s not the bowlers alone, in the batting department too, the weather-beaten pros have left their mark. The youngest of the four centurions is RCB’s AB de Villiers, who is 31. The South African skipper notched up 513 runs from 16 matches to be the RCB’s batting mainstay. RCB opener Gayle, at 36, yet again lived up to the billing of being the world’s most destructive batsman. Besides winning the maximum sixes award with as many as 38 hits over the boundary, the Jamaican cracked his fifth century in IPL, scoring 117 against Kings XI Punjab.

Indian soccer player Romeo released by Brazilian club IANS, NEW DELHI

R

omeo Fernandes has become the first Indian footballer to play professionally in Brazil. The first Indian footballer picked to play in the coveted Brazilian league has been released by his club after spending just 21 minutes on the field, his manager said. Romeo Fernandes, 22, was taken on loan by Brazilian club Atletico Paranaense from FC Goa earlier this year following a training partnership agreement with the All India Football Federation. In his first appearance for the club, the winger came on as a substitute in the 69th minute of the match in the Parana state league last month, but has since been benched. Indian manager Rhys Mascarenhas confirmed Fernandes, whose six-month contract was due to expire in June with the provision of an extension till December, had returned home. Fernando had been released to return to Goa with a view to playing for his country in World Cup qualifiers. Fernando’s move to Brazil had been seen by some “more as a marketing gimmick” than a genuine transfer. India’s English coach Stephen

22-year-old Romeo Fernandes

Constantine, who left Fernandes out of the national team roster for the World Cup qualifiers, said last week that “the door is open for everyone, but certainly not for a player who has gone to Brazil for somebody else’s benefits.”

Designers bat for Banarasi weaves Banaras handlooms deserves to be showcased at international platforms, say top Indian designers NIVEDITA, NEW DELHI

A

ge-old Banarasi weaves from Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s constituency, are poised for a facelift, courtesy a string of high-end Indian designers who are hoping to put their forces behind improving the livelihood of skilled workers and forging the global popularity of the fabric as a Make In India product. A meeting, led by designer-politician Shaina NC and FDCI (Fashion Design Council of India) president Sunil Sethi, held earlier this week in the presence of union Minister of State for Textiles Santosh Gangwar and noted names from the fashion fraternity, steered efforts towards revival of handloom from Varanasi under Modi’s Make in India campaign. The absence of Pioneering designer Banaras Ritu Kumar said that “in brocades today’s textile world, internationally is Banaras handlooms hold they do not have a special place” and the correct deserves to be showcased at image’ international platforms — whether this is via ramps or museums. “They are the only gold and silver patterned fabric reaching out to the Indian subcontinent in its sari and brocaded production. It is one of the textiles which are India’s USPs,” Kumar, who felt a dire need to bring Banarasi weaves into limelight, told IANS. “Handlooms are largely used in India on high glamourized occasions such as weddings, both for grooms and brides. It also has a significant place in Indian formal wear. (But) there is definitely a need to also design the fabrics in a way that they can fit into the ready to wear seg. But the absence of Banaras brocades internationally is due to the fact that they do not have the correct image or exposure,” she added. The attempt via the government’s effort is reportedly also to improve the infrastructure for textile work in Varanasi; to provide support to designers looking to work for the project; to provide yarn at subsidized rates and to set up dyeing centers.

Make your hair holiday-ready IANS, NEW DELHI

B

efore you take off on a summer vacation to a destination of your choice, spare a little time to think of haircare. Hairstylist Asgar Saboo gives essential tips to ensure your hair is holiday-ready and looks its best during your vacation, said a statement. Use dry shampoo: Dry shampoo has been gaining popularity

recently. I always encourage the use of dry shampoo during summer for individuals more prone to oiliness. As the name suggests, dry shampoo absorbs the oil in your hair and gives it a softness, and more importantly voluminous shape. It becomes effective after a few days of not washing your hair. Avoid excessive shampooing: If you have dry hair, it’s probably because you are washing your hair too often. People should cut back a

little on the frequency of washing their hair. The reason behind this is that excessive shampooing can actually remove the natural oils

that are necessary for your hair’s strength. As beach season is upon us, you are not wrong for wanting to wash that sand and chlorine out

A SUEDE FRINGED BAG: A fringed cross body bag will add a boho edge to any outfit. This investment piece will update just about everything in your wardrobe. The ultimate festival fashion accessory of the summer. THE KIMONO JACKET: The kimono inspired belted jacket is practically identical to the Gucci version. The Italian fashion house showed theirs with silk neck scarves and flared jeans. COLORED SUEDE: For a modern, stylish twist on suede, the colorful ones are a great alternative. Blue color looks great worn with denim and it will look great as a jacket for spring.

of your hair, however instead of applying shampoo, rinse the hair in the shower with a scalp massage. This revitalizes the cells and exfoliates them. Avoid blow drying: People who suffer from dandruff or a dry scalp usually expose their hair to the strong heat of a blow dryer. Excessive blow outs cause the scalp to dry out and without the natural moisture that the oils provide, the scalp becomes flaky, just as skin anywhere else would. Maintain your color tone: In rolling with the seasons, change is always good. The use of colordepositing conditioners is vital, as they nourish the roots that have been subject to strong chemicals in hair dye.

Stallone willing

S

ylvester Stallone and Salman Khan have a mutual admiration society, it seems. The Hollywood star is all praise for the “super talented Indian superstar”, and has thrown up a suggestion to the Dabangg star to do an action film together. On May 22, the Bajrangi Bhaijaan actor had called upon his 12 million fans on micro-blogging website Twitter to follow the legendary actor as he is their “hero ka hero”. The Rambo star replied to Salman, tweeting: “Would like to thank the super talented Indian superstar SALMAN KHAN the Compliment he Tweeted! We should do an ACTION FILM together.” Stallone has earlier had a Bollywood stint. He did a

cameo in Sabbir Khan’s Kambakkht Ishq in 2009. On May 22, Salman posted on his Twitter page: “Agar kisi ko follow karna hai? Bahar ka... Inko follow karo @TheSlyStallone. ‘Masaan’ honored at Cannes, Bollywood stars delighted CANNES: Emerging Indian director Neeraj Ghaywan’s indie project Masaan, which centers on a group of people in Varanasi, has won the Promising Future Prize at the 68th Cannes International Film Festival. The film was also honored with the International Federation of Film Critics (Fipresci) award at the festival. The film was showcased in the UnCertain Regard section at the movie gala, and received a fiveminute standing ovation post its screening here. The film received the awards on May 24. ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’: watch it for Kangana’s dual magic

V

ery rarely do sequels create an impact as the original, but in the case of Tanu Weds Manu Returns, the intensity is as forceful or more than the original. Once again packed with sharp and witty dialogues, fine performances and a feel-good factor, Tanu Weds Manu Returns excels as a scaled-up family entertainer. This sequel takes off from where it left in the previous edition in 2011 and returns with the lead pair after four years of jaded bliss. Their marriage is now on the rocks. Tanuja Trivedi aka Tanu is as moody as she was and he, Manoj Sharma aka Manu is at the end of his tether. Still in London, their divorce is inevitable after Tanu manages to ensure that Manu is kept back in

Manu too returns forlorn to India where he lands up meeting Kusum Sangwan, who is Tanu’s lookalike. Seemingly in love with Kusum, he decides to remarry.

With well-etched but flawed characters, the performance of each actor is noteworthy. Kangana steals the show with the dual role she essays. In both her characters,

she is distinct in her sartorial style, speech and mannerisms. As Tanu, she is an extension of herself as portrayed in the earlier edition. But as Kusum Sangwan, a Haryan-

vi athlete, she brings out a sharp contrast, exhibiting her prowess as an actress. R. Madhavan complements her with his overall subtle and restrained performance. He plays the traumatized husband to the hilt. Director Anand L.Rai’s plot is punctuated with moments of family tension and spiced with great rustic colloquial one-liners that sparkle. Though scene after scene you roll with laughter, they falter at times with forced humour. This is evident in the seminar scene, where Manu is invited to give a medical speech. The graph of the narration too, is inconsistent. The first half though flighty, is engaging. The second half digresses with lengthy unwarranted scenes.

When Sonakshi shared this desire, the show’s co-judge Vishal Dadlani promptly added: “She is a good singer. We are doing a film titled Akira where Sonakshi is the ‘hero’. I promise you that she is going to sing in that film.” The actor, who delivered a memorable performance in Lootera, says she wanted to sing in that movie. “I love the song Sawaar loon and would have definitely sung it for myself,” said the actor. At the launch of her forthcoming show, which will bring talented children on the stage, Sonakshi even gave a sample of her singing skills. rime Minister Narendra Modi on May 26 launched a channel dedicated to farmers to mark his government’s first anniversary while union ministers and BJP leaders held press conferences and public meetings in different parts of the country. The Congress however slammed the government as one of “self, selfies and selfishness”. We’re not repackaging UPA schemes: NDA government NEW DELHI: The year-old Narendra Modi-led government says its schemes won’t leave any sector untouched as it flicks aside a Congress charge that it was repackaging the UPA dispensation’s programs. With banking schemes like Jan Dhan Yojana, mass movement programmes like Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, and social movements like Beti Bachao, the government says no sector has been left untouched in its commitment for inclusive development. “We have a very strong commitment to ensuring social security, national security and economic security,” Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi told IANS. “No sector will be left untouched, whether it is environment, financial inclusion, or social equality,” he said. Naqvi strongly refuted the charge that the government was repackaging the schemes of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government. “UPA schemes cannot be repackaged because their schemes were

only for corruption and scams,” he said. “Congress must see ground realities and avoid such statements. The problems are old, and they did not solve them...,” he added. Here is a list of major schemes launched by the NDA government in last one year. Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana is defined as a national mission for financial inclusion. Under the scheme accounts can be opened in any bank branch even with zero balance. So far over 125.4 million accounts have been opened with Rs.105 bn in accounts. The Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan seeks to achieve the goal of Clean India in the next five years. It exhorts people to devote 100 hours every year towards the cause of cleanliness. Under the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana MPs are supposed to adopt and develop villages. So far 491 of 543 Lok Sabha members, and 186 of 246 Rajya Sabha members have adopted villages under the scheme.

full majority in parliament. He also wrote a letter on economic issues, saying that economic growth has been revived and the GDP growth was amongst the fastest globally, but noting there was much more to be done and he was aware of the high expectations. Modi interacted with the officers of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and praised them for “hard work and dedication”. He also called on President Pranab Mukherjee. In a tweet later, Modi said he was “deeply touched” by the congratulatory messages and would continue to work to fulfil their aspirations. A new look website, www.narendramodi.in, was also unveiled which focuses on the government’s accomplishments so far and Modi’s vision for development. The prime minister also launched the DD Kisan channel at a function in the national capital and called for “big

change” in agriculture — a step seen as a measure to counter the constant criticism of his government being “pro-corporate” and “anti-farmer”. The BJP began the day with press conference by its chief Amit Shah highlighting the achievements of the government, which he termed “visible and pro-active”. The BJP has planned 200 press conferences and over 4,000 public meetings to take the government’s initiatives to the people. On May 25, in a speech marking the first anniversary of his government, Modi pitched his government as “pro-poor” and said it had brought achche din (good days) to people but bure din (bad days) to those who had “looted” the nation. “Some people are troubled these days. Because achche din have come for many, but for some, bure din have come...I did not guarantee achche din for plunderers,” Modi said.

Importantly, the continuation of the previous government’s policies like Land Acquisition and Rehabilitation and Resettlement (LARR) Bill, and Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Bill will have significant impact on the realty industry once these are passed by the parliament. Modi: one year in governMent n Economy looks up n India avoids downgrading in ratings n Sentiment positive

The policy direction set by the Modi govt has improved business sentiments, say industry leaders. Global institutions like IMF & World Bank upgrade India’s growth forecast

RETURN OF ‘FEEL GOOD FACTOR’ R APRAJITA GUPTA, NEW DELHI

ecent reviews of global institutions and the prevailing investor confidence suggest a striking change in the perception about the Indian economy cover the past year. Yet, some crucial agenda remains for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government as it enters its second year on May 26. There are improvements in several parameters of the economy as well, notably on inflation that is now at historically-low levels, even as the rupee did not fall as much as other currencies against the dollar. All this led to many global institutions like the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, Asian Development Bank and some UN institutions to upgrade India’s growth forecast to some 7.5-8 percent, calling it the fastest expanding globally, surpassing China. Even some global ratings agencies

like Moody’s that had not-too-longago warned India of a downgrade, if its policy-makers did not pursue a course correction, changed their outlook for the country to positive from stable. Fitch also reaffirmed its stable outlook. “Several brass tack issues like Swachch Bharat, financial inclusion and others have considerably improved the country’s macro economic situation in terms of decline in inflation, stability in currency value and made Indian financial markets attractive for the foreign investors,” industry chamber Assocham secretary general D.S. Rawat told IANS. “An economy of two trillion dollars, well integrated with the world, cannot be catapulted into high growth merely with change in the government. However much the government is sincere, the policy tweaking, legislative changes and revival of investment appetite to be followed by increase in consumer

demand would take about two, two and a half years. A lot would also depend on the global markets which are subdued but all the same the government has made a good beginning,” he said. Another industry captain, A. Didar Singh, secretary general of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), told IANS that the business confidence continued to be high and the investor community had begun

gearing up to tap the huge potential of the economy. “India today is in a far better situation than it was a year ago,” Singh said. “The GDP growth has improved, advance estimates for the current fiscal are higher at 7.4 percent as against 6.9 percent for fiscal 2014. Industrial growth is slowly picking up. Major improvement has taken place with respect to inflation. Foreign direct investment inflows have seen 44 percent surge during May

2014 to February 2015,” he said. “The policy direction set by the Modi government has definitely improved business sentiments. The government has given a huge impetus to infrastructure activities and taken several steps to revive the growth of the economy,” he added. As pointed out by Atsi Sheth, senior vice-president of ratings Agency Moody’s, which had warned India of a downgrade some 18 months ago — that could be a major blow to India and would have rendered junk status to the country’s bonds — there has been much push on the policy initiatives, which is positive for growth. “But this pace is in line with what we at Moody’s anticipated, given the diverse interests within India’s polity and economy,” Sheth told IANS. The stakeholders were also happy with three other programmes, initiated by Prime Minister Modi during the year —“Make in India”, “Digital India” and “Skill India”.

Opposition unites against government US media skeptical of

Modi’s accomplishments

SREEPARNA CHAKRABARTY, NEW DELHI

T

he Modi government’s first year in office and its brute majority has spurred the opposition on instead of crushing it. Increasingly, the ruling party has been put on the mat over various issues. In recent months, the move to pass the land acquisition bill has also backfired for the government. Most major Opposition parties, including the Congress and the Janata Parivar, have re-invented themselves and modified their approach to take on the Modi juggernaut. “The opposition is co-ordinating its actions not only in Parliament, but also in the state assemblies,” Rajeev Shukla, Congress Rajya Sabha member told IANS. He, however, credited PM Narendra Modi for galvanizing the Opposition into a unified force. “Modi has managed to be very

unpopular in his first year in power. He made many promises and could not fulfil them. He had made promises without considering the practical reality. Most of his policies are those which Manmohan Singh was pursuing,” Shukla added. He said that “farmers are unhappy and most businessmen, except

some, are also unhappy” with the current government. The opposition unity was especially on display when almost all parties came together to protest against the land acquisition bill outside Parliament at the beginning of the just-concluded budget session.

NEW YORK: On the eve of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government completing its first year in office on May 26, American media has not been very appreciative of the government’s performance. Various publications have taken a critical view of his accomplishments, saying Modi’s flagship ‘Make in India’ drive is “so far mostly hype” and that job growth remains sluggish amid “outsize expectations”. The New York Times, in a news analysis, said Modi must face the reality that much of his agenda is still only potential. “From abroad, India is now seen as a bright spot, expected to pass China this year to become the world’s fastest-growing large economy. But at home, job growth remains sluggish. Businesses are in wait-and-see mode. And Modi has political vulnerabilities, as parliamentary opposition

leaders block two of his central reform initiatives and brand him ‘anti-poor’ and ‘anti-farmer’,” an NYT article said. An article in The Wall Street Journal is equally critical. “A year after Indian voters handed Narendra Modi a oncein-a-generation mandate for change and economic revival, messy realities are sinking in,” it read. It said that Modi’s ‘Make in India’ drive, aimed at supercharging manufacturing growth is “so far mostly hype”. It cited economic parameters like exports to say that the “economy is merely limping along”. But the media has a whiff of praise too. The WSJ report said Modi has allowed more foreign investment in railways and defense and helped cut red tape. The NYT analysis said chief executives feel that since Modi came to power, India’s business culture has “indeed changed”.

The reason is, first, the realization that one year is not long enough to give a definitive judgment on the performance of a government, especially when it is emerging from the black hole of the failures of its predecessor. Secondly, it is also realized that Modi may have been unable to anticipate the mischief-making potential of some of the troublemakers, including those within the Sangh parivar. It is the appreciation of these difficulties by the general public which explains why he has

passed muster in an opinion poll whereas if the opposition parties are to be believed, his government has failed miserably. However, it is undeniable that since some of the high expectations with which Modi assumed office have begun to be eroded, he cannot allow the present sense of drift to continue. Unless there is a percepti-

scam-ridden Manmohan Singh government. But Modi’s spin doctors evidently did not realize that raising expectations too high — for instance, on the recovery of black money — carries the risk of an equally big disap-

Modi’s spin doctors perhaps did not realize that raising expectations too high, such as on black money, carries the risk of an equally big disappointment if the hopes are not met ble upturn in the economy in the next 12 months, the warning bells will begin to ring. Hindsight suggests that Modi indulged in too much hyperbole during the election campaign. The bombast worked satisfactorily against the dismal backdrop of the

pointment if the hopes are not met. The risk is all the greater because the BJP’s main base of support at present is the notoriously impatient middle class which believes in quick results. It was this class which gave the Congress 200-plus seats in 2009 on the basis of high growth rates

(although the party’s ‘socialists’ ascribed the good showing to its populism) and then brought it down with a crash to 44 seats when the growth rates tumbled. The same fate can await Modi unless he pushes the economic reforms with much greater vigor than at present. Modi's tenure has been marked by a mixture of good and bad luck. Even as he benefitted from the falling oil prices and low inflation, unseasonal rain aggravated the distress of farmers. But, in political terms, the government has been a victim of what can be deemed an exceptional case of misfortune since its principal opponent, the Congress, has decided to adopt an unabashedly cussed attitude. As much is evident from the virtual u-turn it has taken on its

own economic agenda, introduced in 1991, by following what finance minister Arun Jaitley has called an anti-growth line. No less guilty are saffron outfits like the protectionist Swadeshi Jagran Manch and the anti-reforms Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh. Modi, therefore, is battling not only the anti-development groups cutting across party lines, but also a widely prevalent mindset which is deeply suspicious of the private sector and pro-market policies. Whatever the impact of the interventions by the RSS, the government doesn't have much time to lose to fulfil the expectations — probably “unrealistic”, as RBI Guv Raghuram Rajan puts it — of those who voted for Modi in large numbers in the hope that he will bring about India's economic recovery.

India needs to go deeper into Latin America DEEPAK BHOJWANI, NEW DELHI

P

rime Minister Narendra Modi has set a crackling diplomatic pace for his government. Barely two months after being sworn in, he was in Brazil in July 2014, where he met 12 Latin American leaders on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit. This triggered a more active engagement with a region benignly ignored by India despite its huge potential. India’s Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan made a landmark visit to Mexico and Colombia from May 17-22. Both countries are important sources of India's crude oil imports. Crude imports from Mexico in 2014 exceeded $3 billion. Imports from Colombia exceeded $2.6 billion. These figures are set to increase. Mexico shares an undersea oil belt with southern USA in the Caribbean. Its hydrocarbons industry was nationalized early in the last

century. Its government has opened up this sector last year for the private sector, primarily to attract foreign investment and technology to recover flagging oil production, down from a peak of 3.4 million to 2.5 million barrels per day. Mexico's hydrocarbon resources are estimated at 115 billion barrels of oil equivalent (BOE). Three-fourths

of these are identified as unconventional (shale oil, shale gas and deep waters). Colombia’s hydrocarbons sector shone bright earlier this decade. Production of oil and gas crossed the one million barrel per day mark in 2011. At $28.9 billion in 2014, exports of oil and gas constituted 50 percent of Colombia's total

exports. Its relatively low level of proven oil and gas reserves — 2.445 billion barrels and 5.5 tera cubic feet (2013) — is compensated for by a reliable investment regime, backed by a secure economy and stable exchange rate. With the fall in crude prices, however, several private sector companies are re-evaluating their

investment plans. Colombia seeks more investment and is prepared to offer more attractive terms to upstream investors, as was indicated by officials to the delegation. High level meetings with his counterparts, and the heads of the national oil companies, enabled the Minister to reiterate India’s interest and reassure his interlocutors about India's commitment to invest capital and technology. Over 20 percent of India’s crude oil imports worldwide come from five countries in Latin America: Venezuela, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia and Ecuador. India’s energy security has been predicated upon secure supplies, at prices that are as predictable as possible in the volatile hydrocarbons market. Term contracts concluded with the major Latin American suppliers by Reliance Industries, Essar and the state-run Indian Oil have been timely. The strategy of Indian companies to invest upstream to secure oil equity has also been successful.

B

AKERSFIELD, CA -- The Bakersfield Sikh Women’s Association, a non-profit organization launched recently, presented its inaugural scholarship of $5,000 to Tarnpreet Kaur of Ridge View High School here. Tarnpreet has a 4.5 GPA, works part time and is a member of various different clubs on campus such as the Math Club, Link Crew, CSF and Mesa. The Indian American youth also plays on the tennis team and volunteers at the NICU at San Joaquin Hospital, helps with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, America Cancer Society and tutors children at the local elementary schools. She hopes to attend UC Irvine in the fall and study biological sciences. The Bakersfield Sikh Women’s Foundation, co-founded by Indian American Raji Brar, is a first for the city. Based on the principle of selfless service through community action for the goodwill and benefit of others, it is comprised of women who are teachers, lawyers, doctors, nurses, therapists, business owners and politicians who help newly arrived parents from India cope with the American way of life. Plans are afoot for establishing a

NDERSON, S.C. -- An Atlanta man has been charged in the slaying last month of Indian American clerk Mradula Patel at a South Carolina convenience store off Interstate 85. Anderson County Sheriff John Skipper announced on May 13 that a Crime Stoppers tip resulted in the arrest of 25-year-old Justin Jamal Warner. He is charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime stemming from the April 30 slaying of the 59-year-old Patel at a store in Powdersville. The shooting was captured on surveillance video and the tip came from someone who saw the video aired on local media. Warner is in the Clayton County Detention Center in Georgia.

the girls, have role models to help them succeed in life, said a press release.

HICAGO (IL) -- An attorney for a suburban Chicago man accused of trying to join al-Qaidaaffiliated fighters in Syria says her client intends to change his plea to guilty. Abdella Ahmad Tounisi’s attorney, Molly Armour, told a federal judge in Chicago about the change of plea at a May 27 hearing. She and a prosecutor said the sides expected to seal a plea agreement within a few weeks. The 20-year-old was arrested at a Chicago airport in 2013 trying to board a plane for Turkey. Prosecutors say the Aurora man hoped to join Nusra Front. Tounisi earlier pleaded not guilty to attempting to provide material support to a terrorist group. A hearing is set for June 30 for him to change his plea. Prosecutors typically recommend lower sentences if defendants agree to plead guilty.

INDIAN SHOT DEAD IN ROBBERY BID AGAIN

LORIDA -- An Indian American clerk at a convenience store in Florida was shot dead by a teenager on May 19 in an apparent robbery attempt, the second such incident in just over a month. Manav Deshi, who was in his 30s, was shot in the face by a 16-year-old teenager in St. Augustine. The incident has sent shockwaves among the Indian American community in Florida. Deshi, who along with his fiancé recently moved to St. Augustine from North Carolina, died instantly inside the store after he was shot by the teenager who had covered his face with a handkerchief. The accused, along with his

Manav Deshi accomplice, was arrested by the police after a long high-speed chase. The two face multiple charges. Deshi had moved to Florida only two months ago and was excited about his

upcoming wedding. Neighbors placed candles and flowers in memory of the young man most knew only as the “nice guy.” “He just started here a couple of months ago, but he was always smiling and knew everyone’s name,” according to Lisa Washington, a regular customer at the Tobacco and Beverage Express, told Action News. The police said Deshi’s fiancé came to the scene briefly but became physically ill from the news of her loss. Deshi’s parents were on their way to Florida from India. In April, 39-year-old Sanjay Patel was shot dead by two masked men during an apparent robbery attempt at a gas station in Connecticut.

Face-lift for Gandhi statue in Skokie

BY A STAFF WRITER

KOKIE, IL -- The Mahatma Gandhi statue at Heritage Park on McCormick Blvd. in Skokie, which has provided peace of mind to thousands of daily passers-by and visitors, is in for a face-lift. The memorial has strongly withstood the outdoor forces of nature and remained a shining sculpture. However, the harsh weather of Chicago had taken a heavy toll on the floor surrounding the pedestal of the statue. The Trustees of the Gandhi

Memorial Trust explored various options and finally decided to get the necessary

repairs done through a trustworthy engineering company. Now, the Gandhiji’s statue has regained the structural glory which is befitting of the Mahatma’s universal recognition. Since its installation in 2004, the Trust has successfully managed the maintenance of statue and landscaping with the help of donations provided by the community without any fund-raising event. On October 2-3, the Trustees are planning to celebrate the 10th anniversary of statue as a large community event.

H I C AG O , I L – T h e Na t i o n a l Pr e v e n t i o n Week is an annual health observance dedicated to increasing public awareness of, and action around, substance abuse and mental health issues. Held during May 18-23, staff and volunteers from the Asian Health Coalition and Coalition for Asian Substance Abuse Prevention were at local high schools distributing information about the problems and consequences of teen substance use. Alcohol is the most commonly used and abused drug among youths in the US, reveals data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. According to the 2014 Illinois Youth Survey, alcohol is the drug of choice for youths in the community, followed by marijuana and tobacco. While about 17% of 8th graders report using alcohol in the past year, this number skyrockets to 57% by 12th grade. Similar patterns have also be seen with marijuana and tobacco use. “Prevention is the key to reducing these numbers. By educating youth and parents, you are providing them with the tools and knowledge to make safe and health decisions.” said Alia Ryan, Substance Abuse Program Manager at the Asian Health Coalition. “Staff from the Coalition worked with teens from Chicago’s Chinatown community to create a selfie contest which encourages high school students to open the conversation of substance use among their peer and help further spread the awareness”, Alia further added. These substance abuse prevention initiatives are supported in part by the Illinois Department of Human Se r v i c e s a n d H H S Su b s t a n c e Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration.

AN EVENING OF DEVOTIONAL OUTPOURING; ‘RUDRA: WHO REALLY IS HE?--PART 3’ BY A STAFF WRITER

C

HICAGO, IL -- Popular Carnatic vocalist Unnikrishnan immersed the audience in a devotional outpouring of songs in his delectable style, taking the listeners on a spiritual journey on May 9. The concert, ‘Rudra: Who Really Is He?--Part 3’, was held to a packed HTGC Sama Rathi Auditorium, and was organized by the Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago, 10915 Lemont Rd., Lemont, IL. The Rudra Committee team was led by Lakshman Agadi as chair and Bhima Reddy, president of HTGC Temple, and Dr. Vijaya Sarma and Gopalkrishnan as co-chair and Subramanian Sundaram, finance committee chair. Dr. Sangita Rangala, physician and director of Anand Dance Academy, was the Master of Ceremonies and Sivaraman Sivasubramanian as fund raising and who organized this event. The program started sharply at 5:30 pm with Vedic Chant “Om Bhadram Karnebhih Shrinuyama Devah” by Sri Sathyagopal, priest of the temple, which was followed by Dr. Muthuswamy’s brief speech to welcome the artistes. Dr. Muthusamy and his wife were the chief guests for the Maharudram event. Sri Unnikrishnan, a Carnatic vocalist and a national award-winning playback singer, started the evening with a brisk varnam “Sarasijanabha Maampaahi” in Nattai followed by “Siva Siva Enaraada” in Pantuvarali raga replete with alapana neraval and swaras. Unnikrishnan and his team of stalwarts transported everyone to timelessness. Chicago will relive these moments many times over. “Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago, which started as a place of worship three decades ago has transformed into a monumental institution upholding the traditional cultural, religious, and spiritual values that India holds dear” said Bhima Reddy, president of HTGC Temple. Unnikrishnan was honored by Bhima Reddy, president of Temple, and his team was honored by Lakshman Agadi, chairman of the Rudra Committee. Sivaraman Sivasubramanian was honored by Bhima Reddy for organizing the event, his dedication and devotion. “I am taking this shawl on behalf of you. This shawl belongs to you” said Sivaraman Sivasubramanian. This event was organized as a fundraiser for the MahaRudram event happening on June 12, 13 and 14. The event is expected to draw a huge crowd of about 10,000 from all over the country. Additionally, close to 300 priests from across the US are participating in the Vedic Chanting. ’FALLON (IL) – The police are searching for the vandals who damaged a monument that honors veterans in O’Fallon, Illinois. The stone monument, which honors veterans from O’Fallon, was pushed to the ground over the weekend. O’Fallon City employees discovered the damage last week. “This makes us feel for people who served our county. Veterans are so important to us and we know about that. It makes us feel violated,” said Beth Reidelberger. Reidelberger served on the committee that worked for nine years to build the monument in 2006. His step-father’s name is on the monument as he served in World War II. The police are offering a $1,000 reward to anyone that has information that will lead to an arrest. OMEGA-3 BOOSTS BRAIN POWER AMONG THE ELDERLY Older adults at risk of late-onset Alzheimer’s disease who consumed more omega-3 fatty acids did better than their peers on tests of cognitive flexibility IANS, OTTAWA

O

mega-3 fatty acids — found in fish, nuts and certain seeds like flax seeds — can improve cognitive abilities among the elderly, finds a study. It found that older adults at risk of late-onset Alzheimer’s disease who consumed more omega-3 fatty acids did better than their peers on tests of cognitive flexibility. When it comes to fat, there is one type you do not want to cut back on: Omega-3 fatty acids. Two crucial ones — EPA and DHA — are primarily found in certain fish. ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), another omega-3 fatty acid, is found in plant sources such as nuts and seeds. “Recent research suggests that there is a critical link between nutritional deficiencies and the

Teenage obesity may double bowel cancer risk

LONDON: Being obese or very overweight during teenage may double the risk of developing bowel cancer by the time one is middle-aged, says a new research. Elizabeth Kantor from Harvard School of Public Health in the US with her colleagues tracked the health of 240,000 Swedish men, who had been conscripted into the military between the age of 16 and 20 during 1969-76. The men were then monitored for bowel cancer up to 2010, during which 885 of the men developed bowel cancer. Compared with those whose weight was within the normal range when they enlisted (BMI or body

mass index 18.5-25 kg/square meter), those who were very overweight (BMI ranging between 27.5 and nudging 30), were twice as likely to develop bowel cancer. Obesity in teenage, classified as a BMI of more than 30, was associated with 2.38 folds higher risk of developing bowel cancer. The researchers also found a link between high level of an indicator of systemic inflammation during teenage years to heightened risk of the disease in later life. Both factors were independent of each other, indicating that teen BMI may influence bowel cancer risk through mechanisms other than inflammation, the study said.

disease,” said lead author Aron Barbey from University of Illinois. The findings add to the evidence

that optimal nutrition helps preserve cognitive function, slow the progression of aging and reduce the incidence of debilitating diseases in healthy aging populations. The study focused on 40 healthy older adults between the ages of 65 and 75 who are carriers of a gene variant that is known to contribute to the risk of developing late-onset Alzheimer's disease. The researchers tested participants’ cognitive flexibility, measured levels of the fatty acids EPA and DHA in their blood. “We were able to show that higher volume in the anterior cingulate cortex (a brain region known to contribute to cognitive flexibility) was an intermediary in the relationship between omega-3 fatty acids and cognitive flexibility,” the authors said. Cognitive flexibility refers to the ability to efficiently switch between tasks.

Long drive puts you at burnout risk: Study TORONTO: If your daily drive to office lasts more than 20 minutes, you may be at increased risk of burnout, says a new study. “Stressful commute is linked to three dimensions of burnout: emotional burnout, cynicism and professional efficacy,” said researcher Annie Barreck from the University of Montreal in Canada. She, however, noted that the “effects of the duration of a commute on a person's mental health vary according to the type of transport used and the profile of the area where the person works”. “A correlation exists between commuting stress factors and the likelihood of suffering from burnout. But their importance varies according to the individual, the conditions in which their trips take place, and the place where the individual works,” she said. The study involved 1,942 people, aged between 17 and 69, working at 63 organizations in Quebec. The findings showed that there is a significant link between commuting (i.e. the trip between home and work) and the presentation of the symptoms of professional burnout. The bigger the city, the more stressful was the commute, at least for people travelling by car.

Motherhood brings lasting changes to the brain IANS, WASHINGTON

L

ooking at the effects of hormone therapy on females, researchers have found that pregnancy and motherhood could stimulate certain permanent changes in the brain. Hormone therapy (HT) is prescribed to alleviate some of the symptoms of menopause in women. “Our most recent research shows that previous motherhood alters cognition and neuroplasticity in response to hormone therapy, demonstrating that motherhood permanently alters the brain,” said researcher Liisa Galea from University of British Columbia in Canada. The study focused on a specific brain region, called the hippocam-

pus, which has important roles in memory and spatial ability, such as navigational skills. The researchers investigated whether the different forms of the hormone estrogens could have dif-

ferent effects on rats that had experienced motherhood once and on those who had not. There are three forms of estrogens: estradiol, estrone and estriol. They found that estrone-based HT improved learning in middle-aged rats who had not experienced motherhood, but impaired learning in rats of the same age who experienced motherhood. “Hormones have a profound impact on our mind. Pregnancy and motherhood are life-changing events resulting in marked alterations in the psychology and physiology of a woman,” Galea said. “Our results argue that these factors should be taken into account when treating brain disorders in women,” she said.

Growing up with smokers doubles fagging risk IANS, NEW YORK

R

esearchers have found that growing up in a home with a regular smoker nearly doubles the chances of a child becoming an adult smoker. “We know that exposure to cigarette smoking as a child is a risk factor for adult smoking because it is a learnt behavior, and our study results corroborate this theory,” said study lead author Elena NavasNacher. The findings are based on

data from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL), the largest ongoing study of this ethno-culturally diverse population in the U.S.

The researchers looked at data collected from 13,231 adults between the ages 18-74. Forty percent of participants reported being exposed to smoking in their homes as children and adolescents, and 20 percent of all participants were current cigarette smokers. Childhood exposure to household smoking nearly doubled the risk of being a current smoker compared with those never exposed to smoking within the household.
