Obama invites Israeli PM to White House: Report IANS, JERUSALEM

U

S President Barack Obama has invited Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to visit the White House in July, the Yediot Aharonot newspaper reported. The meeting will take place on July 15 or 16 after the nuclear deal deadline between Iran and the P5+ group of world powers passes but before Obama is to put the agreement to a vote in Congress. The deal has been hovering over deteriorating relations between the two allies, such as Netanyahu’s trip to Washington last March amidst

his election campaign when he argued his sharp opposition to the agreement before the Congress. Obama refused to meet the Israeli leader claiming that this would interfere in Israeli elections, but promised they would meet if and when Netanyahu won the election.

Packaged in travelfriendly pouches, the new alcoholon-the-go product is set to be launched in flavors of distilled spirits like vodka, rum and mixed drinks. According to the University of Michigan’s C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital National Poll on Children’s Health, 60 percent of the US adults favor a complete ban of powdered alcohol in their states.

India-US bilateral ties gain momentum WASHINGTON: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has effectively laid the foundation for India’s rapid transformation and purposeful diplomacy leading to new terms of India’s engagement with the US, according to Indian Ambassador Arun K. Singh. “As we celebrate one year of India’s current Arun K. Singh government, it is difficult not to see the changes in the way of doing business, and not to see in them cause for optimism,” he said on June 16 in a keynote address at the Asia Society in New York. “Of course there is more to come in each of these, and I am confident that each passing year, we will make new progress,” Singh said speaking on the topic of “India under Modi: One Year In.” Singh said: “In the past year, our relation with the US has been transformed.” “The US was quick to offer to partner with India in realizing the goals that our new Government set for India’s transformation, and as a result, the narrative in our relations has begun to reflect new found energy and optimism,” the Ambassador added.

Lalit Modi Row

Colleagues back Sushma

Cabinet colleagues have come out in Sushma Swaraj’s support amid opposition’s shrill demand to sack her IANS, NEW DELHI

I

PL’s controversial former chief Lalit Modi on admitted close relations with Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, and said he has been “over criticized”. “The entire UPA government was against me,” he said. He said “Swarajs” have been his friends for over 20 years, and that Vasundhara Raje is a “family friend”. He said he sought help from Sushma Swaraj and Vasundhara Raje so that he could be with his ailing wife, and admitted making call to Sushma Swaraj. “I am close to a lot of politicians,” he added. Meanwhile, Swaraj got strong backing from Finance Minister

Arun Jaitley, who termed “baseless” all allegations against her in the Lalit Modi issue. The Congress has demanded a Supreme Court-monitored probe in the matter. Appearing at a press conference, Jaitley said to a query: “Let me clarify, all the allegations are baseless. The minister (Sushma Swaraj) and the party chief (Amit Shah) have given statements... she acted bona fide with good intentions. The whole government and party share the same view on this. There is no doubt on this.” Jaitley’s statement came two days after the controversy broke out over Sushma Swaraj procuring travel documents for the former IPL chief who is charged with financial impropriety and who has been staying in Britain since 2010.

Lalit Modi (right) has admitted to having close ties with Sushma Swaraj and many other politicians.

Swaraj reacts angrily to Twitter jibe NEW DELHI: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on June 17 reacted angrily to a tweet suggesting she took favors to get her daughter a seat in a medical college through the northeast quota. “My daughter is a barrister and Oxford graduate. What you say is absolutely false,” she replied to the tweet. The twitter handle ‘Soch @pakoed’ had insinuated that “Sushma is no stranger to taking and giving favors! Her daughter studied through NorthEast quota in medical college.” Twitterati immediately reacted, wondering at Sushma’s impulsive

response to a stray tweet. On June 15 too, Sushma had lost her cool, targeting a senior journalist. “Look who is preaching propriety - of all the persons Navika Kumar!” she posted. The Editors Guild on June 17 deplored Swaraj’s tweet and said it was an “attempt to intimidate the media”. “The Editors Guild has deplored the attempt to intimidate the media by Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj. The minister by personally naming a woman journalist and casting aspersions on her in a tweet has set an unfortunate precedent,” the statement said.

Jaitley’s defense came after three other BJP colleagues — Amit Shah, Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar — spoke in her support. There was speculation as to why Jaitley, who also holds the information and broadcasting portfolio, had not spoken out in favor of his colleague. Social media has been rife with speculation that the leak to the media of the email exchanges between Sushma Swaraj, Lalit Modi and Indian-origin British MP Keith Vaz was the job of an “insider”. BJP MP Kirti Azad referred to it in a tweet, and since then the hashtag #AsteenKaSaanp has been trending on Twitter.

Separatist shutdown affects No rules for including transgenders in UPSC life in Kashmir Valley IANS, NEW DELHI

T

SRINAGAR: A protest shutdown called by separatists on June 17 against the killing of four men in Sopore town affected life across the Kashmir Valley as markets were closed down and public transport stayed off the roads. Businesses and educational institutions remained closed here and in all other major towns of the Valley. Attendance in government offices, banks and post offices was also adversely affected because of the non-availability of public transport. Private vehicles and three wheelers plied on some roads in Srinagar city although such vehicular movements remained restricted to the uptown area and the outskirts. Vehicles carrying tourists to Sonamarg, Gulmarg and Pahalgam hill stations operated without any hin-

drance. All major separatist political parties including those headed by Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, Muhammad Yasin Malik and Shabir Shah called for a protest shutdown against the killings of former militants and activists of separatist political parties in Sopore town. So far, four former militants have been killed in Sopore town by unidentified gunmen. The separatist allege these killings have been carried out by government sponsored gunmen. The state government has ordered a massive manhunt to trace the assassins. Police has announced a bounty of Rs.1 million each on two Hizbul breakaway militants identified as Abdul Qayoom Najar and Imtiyaz Ahmad Kandoo.

he central government told the Delhi High Court on June 17 that rules for including transgenders in the UPSC examination can’t be framed as the Supreme Court has not clarified the definition of a transgender. An application seeking clarification on the term transgenders has been filed, the central government and Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) told a division bench of Justice Mukta Gupta and Justice P.S. Teji. The central government said: “Since the Supreme Court judg-

der option in the application form for the civil services preliminary examination. The court had earlier asked the central government and the UPSC why the transgender category has not been included as an eligibility criteria for the examination when the Supreme Court has declared such individuals as third gender. Earlier, transgenders were forced to write male or female against their gender.

Modi speaks to neighbors ahead of Ramadan IANS, NEW DELHI

P

rime Minister Narendra Modi spoke over telephone to his Pakistan and Bangladesh counterparts, Nawaz Sharif and Sheikh Hasina, and Afghan President Ashran Ghani and conveyed to them good wishes for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, an official statement said on June 16. In his conversation with Sharif, Modi reiterated his message of “peaceful, friendly and cooperative” relations between the two countries. Modi’s message came after Pakistani parliament unanimously passed resolutions condemning

recent statements made by the Indian leadership, referring to Modi’s statements relating to the 1971 war during his visit to Bangladesh earlier this month and comments of some Indian ministers in the wake of India’s military action along Myanmar border against terror groups. Talking to Hasina, Modi said his visit to Bangladesh “has set the stage for a new era in bilateral cooperation and regional partnership between the two countries”. Modi assured President Ghani of India’s steadfast commitment to support Afghanistan in its efforts to build a peaceful, stable, secure and prosperous nation.

Matching expectations with content

The biggest challenge that Prime Minister Modi faces is with regard to aspirations and expectations of domestic constituencies, business and industry AMIT DASGUPTA, NEW DELHI

P

rime Minister Narendra Modi has started his second year with a reasonably positive track record. He, however, faces four clear challenges that he needs to urgently address if he aspires for a second term. First, the biggest challenge he faces is with regard to the aspirations and expectations of domestic constituencies, business and industry and from the international community. This is unprecedented in terms of both scale and speed. UPA 2 had regrettably earned the tab of ‘standstill governance’. Both within India and abroad, there was clear frustration at the manner in which UPA-2 demonstrated utter disregard for India’s future. When Modi spoke of better days, it was hugely appealing to a population that had only seen the Indian economy slide for five years. In the biography of individuals, five years can be an interminably long period. Consequently, expectations in

terms of what better days meant were considerable in terms of both scale and speed. Five years of inactivity had made people impatient. They needed to catch up on lost time. This was fast-forward aspiration. The demand was to cut red tape, create a forward looking budget and to put in place incentives that would spur economic activity and create jobs. But more importantly, the demand truly was to get all of this done overnight. As the past one year has demonstrated, this is a Herculean task and constitutes a significant challenge for the prime minister and his cabinet. If the second year of his governance does not show a positive turnaround, the Opposition and the international community would, most certainly, dub him as being high on intentions and low on delivery. He is confronted with a genuinely serious challenge. The second challenge is with regard to the bureaucracy and this is, to a considerable extent, a consequence of his personal style of func-

tioning. Known to be a person who makes up his own mind, he has so far only succeeded in springing surprises on the bureaucracy and clearly leaving them out of the loop when he makes public announcements. While this might win him applause from crowds in Madison Garden and the Sydney Olympic Stadium that he appeared to revel in, it does not necessarily translate into approvals. The yardstick of good governance is verifiable translation of promises. Today, there appears to be - at least in terms of perceptions - a serious shortfall between promises and

delivery.Consider, similarly, the strong manner in which the government has made its intentions clear with regard to zero-tolerance towards corruption. With the repeated allegations of corruption during the previous regime, this anti-corruption move has been largely welcomed. However, corruption cases, as we all know, are difficult to prove and where, indeed, traps have successfully ensnared officials and others, these are few and far to have any significant impact in curtailing prevalent levels of corruption. Focus on Swiss bank accounts, while important, ignores how deeply corruption

has become an integral part of our everyday biography. The third challenge is from his cabinet and party colleagues. At one level, clearly irresponsible statements by many of his party members have been a cause of serious concern because of the manner in which they have been perceived as imposing a Hindutva agenda and challenging the secular fabric of India. The prime minister has chosen to keep silent on every occasion and opted for an alternative course where he has, through his own public statements and personal meetings, sought to assuage fears among minority communities. While this is good, it is not good enough because it does not unambiguously demonstrate clarity on how the prime minister himself thinks. More serious is the manner in which chest-thumping took place after the Special Forces’ action in Myanmar, especially because words of bravado and public boasting, including threats to neighboring countries, were made by those who were clearly not directly in the know of the things. The army, the NSA and the Prime Minister’s Office did precisely what they needed to do: They did not comment or issue long-winded statements. Every country that has carried out such operations issues a bland statement: ‘An operation was carried out successfully by the Special Forces, which suffered no casualties.’ The media and others are then left to draw their own conclusions. Bizarrely, however, this became a media circus with wild statements and hypothetical threats. Modi needs to recognize that his cabinet colleagues lack maturity and understanding. Unless he is able to curb their enthusiasm for making press statements, his own credibility is likely to be seriously undermined. Modi has sufficiently demonstrated that he is a master tactician and strategist. (Amit Dasgupta is a former diplomat. Views expressed are personal.)

BJP can only hope for narrow victory in Bihar Political exigencies have compelled Nitish Kumar to push Lalu Prasad to the background. The JDU chief is now the chief ministerial candidate of the Janata “parivar” led by Mulayam Singh Yadav of the Samajwadi Party (SP).

AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

I

n the hour of Narendra Modi’s electoral triumph last year, he could not have imagined that only a year-and-a-half later, he would face a situation where he and his party would have to devote all their energies to maintain their prime position in the political field. Unless Modi and the BJP are able to overcome the challenge of their opponents in the Bihar assembly elections this coming winter, their grip on the throne in Delhi will become shaky. The first sign that all was not well for Modi in Bihar was available last August when the Janata Dal-United (JD-U), the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Congress overcame the setbacks they had suffered in the general elections a few months earlier to win six of the 10 assembly by-

claimed that the Mauryan emperors, Chandragupta (324-300 BC) and Ashoka (272-232 BC), who ruled from Patalipura, the ancient name of Patna, were of backward caste origin — Kushwaha or Koeri. What may be considered unfortu-

elections in the state. The BJP’s tally of four pointed to a waning of the Modi wave that had enabled the party to win 22 of the 40 parliamentary seats in Bihar in May,

2014. With the BJP’s allies, the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) winning six and the Rashtriya Lok Samta Party (RLSP) three, the BJP-plus group’s total went up to 31.

Although Modi regretted the continued dominance of casteism in Bihar during a recent visit to the state, it is precisely these caste-based animosities that the BJP will try to exploit during the poll campaign. What is more, to show that it is not lagging behind in playing the caste card itself, the party has

nate, however, is why the BJP should have fallen back on these regressive tactics when its USP is supposed to be the prime minister’s development mantra. Given this failure, the most which the BJP can expect is a narrow victory, which will be nearly as much damaging to its reputation as a defeat.

Court upholds Morsi’s death sentence Egypt’s former president Mohamed Morsi faces death in a 2011 prison break case; US President Obama describes the move ‘deeply troubling’ and ‘politically motivated’ IANS, CAIRO

n Egyptian court on June 16 sentenced former president Mohamed Morsi to death over a 2011 prison break case, confirming a preliminary death sentence issued in May, according to media reports. A probe led by Judge Hassan Samir Qadhi found the defendants in the jail break case plotted the killing of police personnel in Abu Zaabal, Wadi el Natroun and El Marg prisons and released around 20,000 prisoners, according to MENA news agency. The Cairo Criminal Court also sentenced to death Muslim Brotherhood guide Mohammad Badie, his deputy Rashad Bayoumi, Brotherhood guide office lawyer Mohei Hamed, former parliament speaker Saad Katatni and Brotherhood leader Essam el Erian in the jail break case. The six convicts attended the verdict session which was held at

SHORT TAKES Kerry concerned over Indo-Pak tensions

WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State John Kerry has spoken with Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to work out how to tamp them down, acknowledging that the latter had just finished a conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Earlier the Kerry said he was “Enormously concerned” over recent increase in tensions between India and Pakistan.

Bangladesh SC upholds leader’s death sentence DHAKA: Bangladesh’s Supreme Court on June 16 upheld the death sentence of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) leader Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mojaheed for 1971 war crimes, a decision that sparked outrage within the party prompting a shutdown call for June 17. A four-member bench of the apex court confirmed the death penalty for the 67-year-old former commander of Al-Badr.

Egypt is facing international criticism after it upheld the death sentence against deposed president Mohamed Morsi.

the police academy in Tagmmu el Khamis district. Earlier in the day, Morsi was also sentenced to life imprisonment related to charges of espionage for foreign powers — including Hamas, Lebanon’s Hezbollah and Iran’s Revolutionary Guards — to destabilize Egypt, Al Ahram daily

reported. The court also sentenced 17 defendants to life in prison, and 16 to death, including Muslim Brotherhood leaders Khairat ElBeltagy and Mohamed El-Beltagy. The general guide of the Muslim Brotherhood, Mohamed Badie, was sentenced to 25 years in jail in the spying case.

WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama’s administration said on June 16 that it is “deeply troubled” by the death sentence handed down against deposed Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi, contending that it was politically motivated. At his daily press conference, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said the result of Morsi’s trial is another example of a “politically motivated” sentence, and he expressed his unease over the judicial practices of the new Egyptian government. “The US has repeatedly raised concerns about the detention and sentencing of a variety of political figures in Egypt,” said Earnest, adding that “we are concerned that proceedings have been conducted in a way that is not only contrary to

universal values but also damaging to (the) stability that all Egyptians deserve.” Specifically, the White House condemned the mass trials against opposition figures or critics of the regime and said it had conveyed those concerns to the government of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. The Criminal Court in Cairo on June 16 confirmed the death sentences imposed on the former Egyptian president and almost 100 Islamists for planning his escape from a prison on the outskirts of Cairo during the 2011 revolution. Judge Shaaban al-Shami issued his ruling in the case after receiving the non-binding opinion of Mufti Shauqi Alam, Egypt’s top Muslim religious authority, regarding the provisional death sentences.

he US House of Representatives has passed a bipartisan amendment to the FY2016 Intelligence Authorization Act calling for expansion of USIndia-Israel national security cooperation. The amendment passed on June 16 requires a report from the Director of National Intelligence on the possibilities for growing national security cooperation between the US, India, and Israel. The amendment was offered among others by Ami Bera and George Holding, Democratic and Republican co-chairs respectively of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans.

The amendment was offered among others by Ami Bera and George Holding.

It was also supported by Joe Crowley, Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus; and Eliot Engel, top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

“The US, along with two of our most important allies, India and Israel, have all faced the threat of international terrorism,” said Bera, the lone Indian-American member

of the US Congress. “Each of these countries also has its own unique counter-terrorism expertise and it benefits us all to share information and ideas. “With the current instability in the Middle East and parts of South Asia, we should work together to enhance our security cooperation to continue to combat the global threat of terrorism,” Bera said. “While the US already has robust national security partnerships with both India and Israel, there are many areas where opportunities exist to develop and further grow these critical relationships,” said Crowley. “It’s vital that we promote cooperation among democratic governments.”

Sikhs may now join the US Army, without being forced to cut his hair, shave his beard or stop wearing his turban, rules a court ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

D

istrict Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson ruled last week that the Army violated Hofstra University student Iknoor Singh’s rights when it refused to let him compete for a spot as a contracted member of his college’s Reserve Officer Training Corps program. “The court finds that defendants have failed to show that the application of the Army’s regulations to this plaintiff and the denial of the particular religious accommodation he seeks further a compelling government interest by the least restrictive means,” the judge wrote. She added that the Army’s refusal to permit Singh to enrol while adhering to “articles of faith” that include his hair and turban “cannot survive the strict scrutiny”

Consul (Economic and Education) Tiju Thomas who developed the web portal blooddonors.ae, will officially unveil the website on June 21. The Indian community has the largest number of blood donors in the UAE. “I would like this to be considered as a gift of the Indian community to the UAE.”

of the federal law. The Army has given “tens of thousands of exceptions” to its grooming and uniform policies, the judge wrote, and made “successful accommodation of observant Sikhs in the past,” noting sev-

eral who have served with distinction, receiving commendations. Jackson said the Army’s own research contradicted deputy chief of staff Lt. Gen. James C. McConville’s opinion in denying Singh’s enrolment request.

McConville and other Army officials had contended the articles of faith would have an adverse impact on unit cohesion and morale, discipline and health and safety. Singh, a resident of Queens in New York, who plans to enrol in the ROTC program in autumn, told Newsday on June 15: “Being told no a handful of times, I didn’t give up.” “I had faith and let things play out,” he was quoted as saying. “I’ll be going on weekend field exercises, which I wasn’t previously able to do. I’m very excited about that.” The American Civil Liberties Union and advocacy group United Sikhs filed the lawsuit in November, saying the Army’s denial violated the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which gives protections for religious-based exercises.

NEW DELHI: He left his cushy job as a top executive in a New York firm to search for that elusive answer about death and suffering. After a year-long sabbatical through a Buddhist retreat in the Scottish ighlands to the rugged terrain of the Himalayas, writer Karan Bajaj says he has just “scratched the surface” and “one lifetime will not be enough” for his quest. But the outcome of his soul searching journey is his third novel, The Seeker. Published worldwide by Penguin Random House India and released in India on June 11, The Seeker is the story of an investment banker in New York who embarks on a journey to become a yogi in the Himalayas. In an e-mail interview with IANS, Bajaj, 35, whose first novel Keep off the Grass was a bestseller which is now being turned into a movie, said he is trying to live like a “yogi”. Even after returning to New York and joining another firm as an executive, he is trying to work with complete “selflessness and honesty”. Bajaj said: “The Bhagavad Gita says that each man’s soul cries for the infinite in the finite world, hence that indescribable feeling of something missing from one’s grasp even in moments of deep achievement. I think it was less courage and more necessity that made me answer it.”

Double delight for Bopanna Bopanna-Mergea clinch Stuttgart Open title; Second title for the Indo-Romanian pair IANS, STUTTGART

ndo-Romanian pair of Rohan Bopanna and Florin Mergea clinched the men’s doubles title at the 574,965-euro Stuttgart Open on the grass courts of Tennis Club Weissenhof here on June 14. The fourth seeds took just an hour and 12 minutes to beat Austrian-Brazilian third seeds Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares 5-7, 62, 10-7 in the final. This is the second title the two have won together, having won the clay court Madrid Open last month. This is 35-year-old Bopanna’s fourth title of the year, having won two hard court tournaments in Dubai and Sydney with Canadian partner Daniel Nestor. This is also the Bengaluru-born’s 14th career doubles title and second on grass. Though the fourth seeds played well, Peya and Soares surged ahead just when it was required, winning

HALLE (GERMANY): The IndoRomanian tennis pair of Rohan Bopanna and Florin Mergea played brilliantly to enter the men’s doubles quarter-finals of the Gerry Weber Open here on June 16. The second seeds beat CzechUkrainian Luka Rosol and Sergiy Stakhovsky 2-6, 6-3, 10-8. Rosol and Stakhovsky got off to a flying start, winning couple of break points right at the start to take the opening set 6-2 in a one-sided contest. The second set saw BopannaMergea get the lone break point avail-

able. A couple of double faults at crucial junctures also did not aid Rosol and Stakhovsky, helping their opponents take home the set 6-3 and push the match into the decider. Bopanna-Mergea played sensibly to win the super tie-break 10-8. RosolStakhovsky also made life difficult for them by serving a double fault at such an important phase of the match. The Indo-Romanian pair will next face Croatia’s Marin Draganja and Finland’s Henri Kontinen in quarters who earlier beat Alexander Zverev and Mischa Zverev.

the sole break point of the first set. Bopanna and Mergea came back strongly to not allow even a single break point opportunity to their opponents while earning them-

selves three chances, converting two to win the second set and push the match into the decider. Four aces in the super tie-break considerably aided Bopanna-

Mergea’s chances of winning the title as they easily went on to clinch the summit clash and boost their chances before the start of Wimbledon, the lone grass court Major, on

June 28. Nine aces from Bopanna and Mergea and five double faults at crucial junctures of the match helped the Indo-Romanian pair win the title.

Young blood has added India, Bangladesh renew ODI rivalry flexibility: Skipper Sardar IANS, MIRPUR

ANTWERP: Indian hockey team captain Sardar Singh on June 17 said the inclusion of new and young players has made the side more flexible as the squad gears up for the Hockey World League (HWL) Semi-Final starting here on June 20. Chief coach Paul van Ass has brought in young blood in the forms of Lalit Upadhyay, Jasjit Singh Kular, Gurmail Singh and Devinder Walmiki. These players have joined the 18member squad either because some of the seniors like V.R. Raghunath and S.V. Sunil are injured or van Ass has found them to be fitting into his scheme of things with an eye to the future.

“With the addition of new and young players, the team combination becomes more flexible, which is helping us to create more options in drawing new strategies,” the 28-year-old Sardar said in a release. HWL Semifinal, an Olympic qualifying tournament, offers Olympic berths for top three performers. India, though, have already secured their place in the Olympics by winning the 2014 Asian Games gold medal.

India go down to Guam in WC qualifiers IANS, GUAM

I

ndia lost their second consecutive 2018 World Cup qualifying match, going down 1-2 against Pacific islanders Guam, a country ranked 33 places behind them in the world football rankings, here on June 16. It was World No.141 India’s second match of the second round of qualifiers, while Guam collected their second win from as many matches. Guam earlier defeated Turkmenistan 1-0. India, Guam, Oman, Iran and Turkmenistan are in Group D for the preliminary league with the top

two finishers progressing to the next phase of the competition. India head coach Stephen Constantine kept faith in the same starting eleven who played in the 1-2 loss against Oman last Thursday in Bengaluru. But he was let down by his boys once again.

I

ndia would undergo a change of guard and heart against Bangladesh on June 18 when Mahendra Singh Dhoni will lead for the first time since the World Cup. Since Dhoni’s sudden retirement from Tests midway in an away series against Australia last year and Word Cup loss in Cup semifinals against the same opponents, much has changed in the governance of Indian cricket. While Dhoni’s Test withdrawal facilitated the emergence of Virat Kohli as skipper, India’s flop World Cup defense fast-tracked the removal of passive Zimbabwean coach Duncan Fletcher for a more agile and exertive team director Ravi Shastri. Dhoni’s much acclaimed calm and composed style of captaincy was also swapped for a combustible approach to leadership by a younger, brasher Kohli. The team has sought to move on to greener pastures since the Cup heartache but would have to fall back upon the tried and tested leadership of Dhoni to move them forward. Their first endeavour in the one-off Test match against Bangladesh at Fatullah was ruined by rain. And not much is expected to change in the three-match OneDay International (ODI) series. All three matches at the Sher-eBangla National Stadium will be day-night contests with the likelihood of rains ruining the match, partially or entirely, a realistic possibility. With a change in the format of the game, dynamics of both

Even a whitewash not good enough for India DUBAI: A 3-0 victory over home side Bangladesh in the upcoming One-Day International (ODI) series will not be enough for secondplaced Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s India to reclaim the top spot in ICC rankings, but a series win for the hosts will boost their qualifying chances in the 2017 Champions Trophy. Dhoni’s side can reduce leader Australia’s advantage to 10 points should it sweep the series three-nil. If India wins the series 21, it will remain on 117 points, while a 2-1 loss will mean it will join New Zealand on 115 points but will still be ranked above the Kiwis.

squads would also underdgo a variation. India remain the stronger unit with a more balanced side but the hosts are not pushovers anymore, particularly after a drastically improved Word Cup performance. Pacer Mashrafe Mortaza, whose leadership skills have transformed the side, would take over the mantle of captaincy from Mushfiqur Rahman. Their uninhibited run in the World Cup was halted by India in the quarters. But the manner of which brought much hostility among the two cricketing boards, with Bangladesh alleging partial umpiring decisions contributing to their loss, which culminated in the resignation of Bangladesh’s Mustafa Kamal as International Cricket Council’s (ICC) president.

Cash-for-vote: ACB intensifies probe Telangana’s Anti-Corruption Bureau deepens probe in the cash-for-vote scam, questions several TDP leaders; may issue notice to Andhra Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu IANS, HYDERABAD

ntensifying its probe in the cash-for-vote scam, Telangana’s Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on June 17 began questioning Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader V. Narender Reddy while another leader Sandra Venkata Veeraiah is yet to appear before the investigating agency. The ACB late on June 16 had served notice on TDP legislator Sandra Venkata Veeraiah and another leader Narender Reddy, who was the TDP-BJP candidate in Telangana legislative council elections. They were asked to appear before the ACB for questioning. As Veeraiah was not available at his residence, the officials pasted the notice on the residence door. Though the officials asked Narender Reddy to accompany them, he sought time till June 17. Narender Reddy reached ACB headquarters in Banjara Hills on June 17 morning. A team of officials questioned him as he is alleged to be the ultimate beneficiary in the case, sources said.

‘Central government breaches SC order’

The questioning began amid reports that ACB is planning to issue notices to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and two party MPs. TDP MLA A. Revanth Reddy was arrested by the ACB on May 31 while he was offering Rs.5 million to nominated MLA Elvis Stephenson reportedly to induce him to vote for Narender Reddy. In a trap laid on Stephenson’s complaint, the ACB also arrested

Revanth Reddy’s aides Sebastian Harry and Uday Simha ACB has already questioned the three accused with regard to the source of the Rs.5 million and also from where they planned to arrange the remaining Rs.45 million as the deal was reportedly struck for Rs.50 million. ACB called Narender Reddy and Veeraiah after analysing the call data of Revanth and two other accused. Their custody has been extended till June 29.

HYDERABAD: Amid speculation that Telangana’s Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) may issue notice to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu in the cash-forvote scam, Andhra government has threatened to hit back with counter case against his counterpart K. Chandrasekhar Rao. Andhra Agriculture Minister P. Pulla Rao told reporters that the ACB of Telangana has no right to issue notice to Naidu and that in case a notice is issued, Andhra government will give a befitting reply. Stating that there are 87 cases against Chandrasekhar Rao in Andhra Pradesh, he said there were cases being investigated by Special Investigation Team (SIT) and CID. “There is also a case of phone tapping. We have evidence which will lead to the collapse of TRS (Telangana Rashtra Samiti) govern-

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalaltihaa termed the central government’s decision to entertain Kerala’s request to approve the terms of reference for an environmental impact assessment (EIA) for a new dam as “a gross violation” of a Supreme Court order. In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Jayalaltihaa said: “The very act of entertaining Kerala’s request and considering the same by the (central) government ... is a gross violation of the order of the Supreme Court of May 7, 2014. “In fact, the government of India should have desisted from entertaining and considering the proposal and ought to have remitted the proposal back to the government of Kerala,” she said. Jayalalithaa wrote to Modi after the central environment ministry examined the terms of reference suggested by Kerala for conducting an EIA to construct a new Mulla Periyar Dam in Kerala’s Idukki district.

Going by the current trend, nobody is going to say that ‘Because you played a mother in your first film, you’re only fit for such roles’. I don’t think it will end your career,” Shira told IANS. “The reason I took up the mother’s role is because it was screaming out lot of scope for performance. In fact, I can proudly say my role is

I’m not sure if it was his instinct or something special that he saw in me, but I’m really thankful to the scope he gave me in my first film,” said Shira, who is a corporate trainer by profession, and is paired with actor Manoj Bharathi in the movie. It was through a photographer friend that she landed an opportunity to work in Baby, which releases in cinemas on June 18. Directed by D. The Erhard family of artists was honored by Sri. Srinivas Sarma, Prashant Sarma and Sanjeev Sarma. The emcee for the program was Dr. Sangita Rangala and Mr. Vikram Rangala. Salient features of the three-day mahayagna include more than 1,000 women reciting the Lalitha Sahasranamam, invoking the Divine Mother with Her 1,008 names. Hundreds of Vedic Scholars from all over the country would gather and chant Sri Rudram, the most ancient Vedic prayer for Lord Shiva. The Navachandi Mahayagnam is planned in such a way that everybody can participate in offering oblations into the sacred fire. Ṣaints and Satgurus have accepted the invitation to grace the occasion, which is likely to be attended by over 5,000 devotees over the three-day span.

Tulsi Sundar Kand by Pujya Ajaybhai Yagnik at Downers Grove

OWNERS GROVE, IL -- Sundar Kand is the 5th chapter from of Ram Charit Manas--Ramayan written by Saint Goswami Tulsidaas in Awadhi language 500 years ago. It depicts the love between Shri Rama and Devi Janaki and devotion of Hanumanji towards Shri Rama in search of Maa Janaki. When reminded of his forgotten powers by Jambavant, he gets ready to cross the ocean to reach Lanka. During his journey he overcomes many obstacles. In Lanka, he meets King Raavana’s younger brother Bibhishena who directs him to Ashokvana where Maa Janaki is held captive by Raavana. After giving her Shri Rama’s ring, on the pretext of eating fruits, he destroys many trees in Ashokvana. As King Raavana sends his mighty son Akshaykumar to fight, Hanumanji kills him, which further angers King Raavana. His other mighty son Indrajeet captures Hanumanji and brings to the King Raavana. As a punishment, King

Pujya Ajaybhai Yagnik Raavana puts Hanumanji’s tail on fire. Hanumanji spreads this fire all over Lanka and with Maa Janaki’s blessings, comes back to Shri Rama. Hanumanji uses his intellectual, spiritual and physical powers to carry out the Lord’s order and work with complete devotion. Saint Goswami Tulsidaas has

very well described it poetically in 60 Dohas(two-line stanzas) and Choupais (four-line stanzas). Though many devotees and groups just recite Sundar Kand, Pujya Ajaybhai Yagnik makes a movie out of it with melodious, devotional, heart- and soultouching devotional songs, i.e., bhajans. Pujya Ajaybhai Yagnik is Lord Shri Hanuman’s ardent devotee from Delhi, India. He not only has been singing/ reciting/preaching “Sundar Kand” since his young age going from places to places, either in India or abroad, but he is also trying to live it. He has travelled all over India and has also visited the UK, the US, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Indonesia, Mauritius, the Philippines, Uganda and Sri Lanka. Pujya Ajaybhai Yagnik has performed at various temples in cities and states like Chicago, New York, New Jersy, New Mexico, Ohio, Detroit, Indiana, Wisconsin, Texas and many devotees home. He has been felicitated and recognized

by President of Mauritius and presidents of many temples. He has been honored by many well-known saints like Paramhans Paramanandji, Swami Arjun Puriji of Haridwar, Morari Bapu, Swami Adhyatmanadji of Divine Life of Amdabad, Pujya Bhupendrabhai Pandya, Pujya Rameshbhai Oza, and Sadhvi Ritumbhara Devi, Maa Amrutamayi and many others. He was honored by Param Pujya sant Morari Bapu in Allahabad on occasion of Kumbh Mela in 2013. Recently, he recited Sundarkand at Sant Neem Karoli Baba Ashram – Flying Hanuman Mandir at Taos in New Mexico and enthralled American devotees. He is seen on many Indian religious TV channels regularly and many devotees start their day with his Hanuman Chalisa and Sundarkand recitation. Tulsi Sundarkand, a free mega event with dinner, has been sponsored by Surinder Jain and his wife at Ashyana Banquet hall in Downers Grove on June 23.

HINDU TEMPLE OF GREATER CHICAGO ORGANIZES MAHARUDRA YAGNA

C

HICAGO, IL -- Last weekend, the Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago hosted historic and massive threeday convocation to pray for universal peace, welfare and prosperity. Thousands from the Chicago area and around the world gathered for ancient Vedic ceremonies that transcended boundaries of religion, nationality, or gender and allowed devotees a rare and transcendental experience. Countless devotees, priests and scholars participated in the mass chanting of ancient prayers, culminating in the June 13 Maharudram Yagna, a fire sacrifice whose history dates back 5000 years, but whose relevance to modern challenges and contemporary life could not be more profound now. Rudra, a deity first described in the Rig Veda, the world’s oldest scripture, appears on the surface as a storm God. But Rudra emerges in the scriptures as an embodiment of universal truth. He represents both the storms of life and our power to weather those storms and turn them into belongs. HTGC Priest Sri Vengatesa Sivacharyar spent well over a year planning what is one of the most complex yagnas in Vedic tradition. With the support of Sri Dharmarao Nellivalasa, he led and guided a team of priests from Chicago as well as other temples to conduct every step of the three-day ceremony exactly as prescribed in scriptures. The Maharudram event drew attendance and support from a vast array of local, national, and international spiritual, political, and community leaders. They included Satguru Bodhinatha Veylanswami, the US-born spiritual head of Himalayan Academy, Hawaii; Swami Ishatmananda of the Vivekananda Vedanta Society, Chicago; Swami Ramanaswaroopananda of Atma Vidya Mandir, Tiruvannamalai; Sri Samaveda Shanmuka Sarma, Hyderabad and Sri Swami Adhyatmanandaji Maharaj, Ahmedabad. The president of The Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago, Bhima Reddy, and the chairman of the Maharudram Committee, Lakshman Agadim led the large congregation in honoring the visitors from India, Hawaii, and all over North America with fresh flower garlands and gifts, paying respect to their various religious orders. Maharudram committee co-chairs Dr. Vijaya Sarma and Gopalakrishnan Kari, with the support of core committee members Subramanian Sundaram, Ananth Subramanian, Sriram Sankaran, Vishi Viswanath, Sridevi

Kurella, Gurudutt Ramamurthy, Abhishek Gawasane, Sivaraman Sivasubramanianm led dozens of volunteers. Aided by religious scholars for over a year, they made sure that the ritual, the prayer, and the geometry of the sacred space itself remain virtually unchanged from yagnas performed millennia ago in ancient India. The Maharudra Yagna encompasses psychology, metaphysics, cosmology, and moral teachings. The event was a rare opportunity for children and families to witness heritage and history come to life. At the start of the day’s ceremony, the priests led the assembled 2000-plus in Sanskrit prayers which listed the names of sacred places. Along with the names of places in India and rivers like the Ganga, the priests chanted the names of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers, Michigan and Alabama. The June 12 events celebrated the power of women and girls, central to Hindu and Vedic philosophy. Nearly 1300 women and girls chanted in unison the Lalita Sahasranama, a poem listing the 1008 names of the Supreme Goddess, who embodies the essential power and love of the universe. In keeping with tradition, dozens of volunteers prepared thousands of fresh meals in the temple’s kitchen, and the organizers donated to a local food pantry to feed thousands more. And in a sign that the event was truly a 21st century version of a 5000-year-old tradition, a quadricopter drone took aerial live streaming video and children got a 3D virtual walk through famous temples in India. The June 14 Sunday culminated with the Nava Chandi Homam, 14 simultaneous fire sacrifices with offerings of ghee, clarified butter, flowers, fruit, and special preparations of therapeutic herbs, seeds, and aromatic wood. Devotees chanted verses praising the feminine aspect of divinity, embodied as the Goddess. Worshippers sat in front of the priests’ large fire pit in squares of 16 people around 13 smaller copper fire pits designed according to geometry prescribed in the Atharva Veda. The devotees praised the Goddess’s various qualities: she is omnipotent and terrible to those who would do harm, tender and all-protective to those who have faith and seek peace within and without. Organizers had expressed their hope to the volunteers that those in attendance would not just be moved, but transformed.

Countless devotees, priests and scholars participated in the Maharudra Yagna’s elaborate rituals

HICAGO, IL – The Chicago/ Illinois Chapter of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) celebrated the exceptional victory of the party in Delhi elections with some 200 dyed-in-thewool supporters gathering at NorthShore Banquet Hall on Devon Avenue. Motika Anand co-ordinated the whole event along with Minhaj Akhtar and Ajeet Singh, treasurer, FIA, and other Chicago volunteers. She thanked all the volunteers for their contribution in the polls. The Chicago chapter had adopted the Kirari Constituency in Delhi where the candidate won by the margin of 45,000 votes. Shalini Gupta, the global NRI coordinator, said that the results were very encouraging and NRIs would continue to support the party and also make sure that the party continued to follow the path of clean politics and transparency. “The ball is in our court now to perform and prove our genuine intentions.” she said. Dr Munish Raizada, a Chicago resident who has worked on ground for a long time until last year, spoke about the months of tough ground work which, he said, had helped the party to gain the huge support from Delhi voters. Chicago seniors have ball on Father’s Day BY A STAFF WRITER

C Saikiran Aila IAMI, FL -- Friends of an international student pursuing his master’s degree said he was shot and killed in Little Havana on June 14. A witness said they heard shots at around 2 am just north of SW 8th Street, west of I-95. “We heard five loud shots,” said a witness who wished not to identify himself. After seeing the aftermath, he said he called 911. Paramedics rushed 21-year-old Saikiran Aila into an ambulance, but he died at the hospital. What this witness doesn’t know is why an international student from India was targeted in the dark of night. “I overhead some cops saying it could have been a robbery for the phone,” said the witness. Friends of Aila said he had only been in South Florida for about a month to get his master’s in Informational Technology. “Very quiet guy, doesn’t do anything. Simply go to college and come back,” said his friend, Ram Sheri. Sheri said he and others are trying to get food for Saikiran’s family. “We are helping out whatever we can help,” he said. Meanwhile, this young man is praying for the victim’s family. “Living through that and seeing that it happened that was an experience. Pretty scary,” the witness said.

The tanginess of the tomato with some peppers and the secret recipe adds to the taste of the tamatar ki chaat and leaves the foodie faithfuls seeking for more than just one helping. The ‘palak’ (spinach) pakodas are also worth a try. Served hot n’ crisp, the pakodas are pre-cooked and then fried again when sought by a customer. The crispness mixed with a concoction of ‘hari’ (green) chut-

With an influence from neighboring Bihar, chooda matar is a “hot item” during mornings, informs 25year-old Ankit Kesari, the owner. Kashi also serves up one of the finest coolers for summer-hit souls. There are several shops serving tasty ‘thandai’. A shop at Gudauli has a beeline of ‘raring-for-more’ fans,

who simply don’t seem to get enough. The chilled milk preparation is served after mixing with a concoction of things including elaichi, rose petals, garam masala, kesar and a lot of other things. Gopal Mishra, a self-confessed fan of the drink informs that the Benarsi thandai is the best in the world. He further points out that most people prefer thandai laced with bhaang. Lassi is another favourite. “Ye Baba Vishwanath ki nagri hai aur bhaang waali thandai (This is Baba Vishwanath’s town and bhanglaced thandai) is Lord Shiva’s prasad,” a local pointed out. Varanasi has a lot of Shaivite devotees thronging from the southern parts of India. So, come to Benaras not only for the salvation of the soul, but also for some happy munching!

Y

ou can use strawberries, banana peel or even coconut oil to get sparkling white teeth, but try these options only after proper research, suggests an expert.Uchenna Okoye, clinical director at London Smiling Dental Group, doles out guidelines, reports femalefirst.co.uk. STRAWBERRIES Strawberries contain citric acid, which can weaken the surface hardness of your teeth. But it also contains the more gentle malic acid, especially the riper ones. So choose a really ripe strawberry, rub it on your teeth and just like exfoliat-

ing the skin, it does remove superficial debris. BANANA PEEL High levels of potassium, magnesium and manganese in bananas can help remove stains from teeth. Simply peel a ripe banana, and rub your teeth with the insides of the peel for about two minutes. After three weeks, your teeth will have whitened. CIDER VINEGAR Rinsing with apple cider vinegar (mixed two parts of water) will not make teeth whiter. Cider vinegar is an acid, albeit a weak one. This makes the enamel on your teeth less resistant to damage - like wetting a chalk and then scraping off the surface. COCONUT OIL/ TURMERIC There is no scientific evidence at all that ‘oil pulling’, as it’s called, will whiten teeth, or even remove bacteria. And turmeric is not good for the teeth.

volution has trained our brain to expect calories or energy from sweet-tasting foods and that is why low-calorie cookies or diet drinks do not satisfy us, suggests a research. The results could explain why dieting may backfire, leading us to eat more until the body meets its energy needs. We may even have hormones that help the brian distinguish real sugar from artificial sweetener, the study published the journal Neuron, said. “We knew that the human brain could tell the difference between real and fake sugar, we just did not know how,” said first author Monica Dus, assistant professor at the University

of Michigan in the US. For the study, researchers deprived fruit flies of food for several hours and then gave them a choice between diet, non-nutritive sweeteners and real sugar. When the flies licked the real sugar, it activated a group of six neurons that released a hormone with receptors in the gut and brain. The hormone fuelled digestion and allowed the fly to lick more of the nutritious food. From an evolutionary perspective, sweet taste means sugar and a subsequent big energy boost.

RESTAURANT REVIEWs

It makes sense to go to Naansense

BY hi INDiA TEAM CHICAGO – No nonsense this. If you are a true epicure and want to eat to your heart’s content, head to Naansense. This petite, counter-serve Indian restaurant on the Loop offers ‘naanwiches’ as well as rice and salad bowls, all topped with sauces using Indian spices and made-from-scratch chutneys. Yummy-in-the tummy naanwiches—sandwiches made with eponymous naan bread freshly baked in a traditional tandoor clay oven—available at the 24-seat eatery on Wells Street have taken Chicagoans by storm. No wonder, gourmets call it a

funky symbols of both India and the Windy City. Guests waiting in line may contribute to the wall by writing a thought of the day, note to a friend or simply any ‘naansense’ that comes to the mind, says Patel who has honed his culinary skills at Veerasway and Lafayette. Aside from serving the Indian-inspired eats inside the Loop spot, Naansense also offers extensive catering options for office lunches, social events and business groups up to 400 people. According to a diner, Naansense has taken the Chipotle model of ordering the food. “You start with your format—either a naan wrap, a salad bowl, or a rice bowl . Then you pick your filling: chicken, pork, lamb, lentil croquettes, or fresh paneer. After that, you pick some toppings and sauces, and you’re good to go”, he says.

Said a student who is a regular at Naansense: “Overall, if you’re in the neighborhood, you should definitely swing by Naansense to catch one of the chicken (from left to right) Viral Patel, Hiran Patel, Sahil Singh and NIrav Gandhi are all smiles as their or lamb naanwiches. Within six months, he was promoted to head chef and his team earned a Michelin Bibb Gourmand award for excellence in dining and service. Chef Patel’s talent and cooking expertise were then sought after by the developers of other Indian restaurant concepts, including Bombay Spice and Klay Oven. Chef Sahil Singh’s love of global street culture drives his culinary vision. His earliest memories include indulging upon the exceptionally diverse fare in the bazaars of Mumbai. These early experiences have instilled a longstanding desire to apply his classical French training to the peasant cuisine of his childhood. Sahil earned a culinary certificate from Kendall College and started an internship at Veerasway soon after. His talent and passion were quickly noted, and he was asked to join the staff full-time. He was promoted to Sous Chef, where he was able to realize a wide variety of off-beat and creative dishes. His efforts greatly contributed to Veerasway being awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand. Happy meal:

Food that can pep up your mood Eating healthy is good not only for your physical health but also for your mood, pulling you out of the vicious cycle of stress and unhealthy food in the process, experts say.

Poor sleep may double heart attack risk LONDON: When it comes to health of your heart, a bad night’s sleep could be as bad as smoking. Researchers have found that sleep disturbances may double the risk of heart attack and stroke in men. “Sleep is not a trivial issue. In our study it was associated with double the risk of a heart attack and up to four times the risk of stroke,” said professor Valery Gafarov of the World Health Organization (WHO). “Poor sleep should be considered a modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease along with smoking, lack of exercise and poor diet. Guidelines should add sleep as a risk factor to recommendations for preventing cardiovascular disease.” The research was part of the WHO programme “MONICA” (multinational monitoring of trends and determinants in cardiovascular disease) . The study included a representative sample of 657 men aged 25 to

f a bad day at the office or home pushes you to reach out for potato chips or open the refrigerator for beer - food that can make you fat and eventually add to your stress levels - here is some good news. Eating healthy is good not only for your physical health but also for your mood, pulling you out of the vicious cycle of stress and unhealthy food in the process, experts say. “It has been proven through research that prebiotic and probiotic foods reduce stress and depression. Red wine and dark chocolates, kimchi salad and sauerkraut (fermented cabbage) are all healthy alternatives to potato chips and alcohol,” Sunita Roy Chowdhary, chief dietician at the BLK Super Speciality Hospital here, told IANS. Probiotics are good bacteria that are found in the gut and in certain foods. “Also, curd and Indian lassi are loaded with stress busting bacteria,” Roy Chowdhary added. One way food can help improve our mood is by changing the composition of bacteria residing inside our gut.

“Our body is a dwelling place for about trillions of bacteria and other microbes, collectively known as microbiome. They do many important things: break down food, fight off infection, and boost the immune system. However, scientists are finding that they may do even more than that, and have an important role in our mental health,” Roy Chowdhary explained. “Studies in both humans and animals indicate that the number and type of bacteria in the gut influence anxiety levels,” she pointed out. She added that probiotics have been shown to lower levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, which is linked with anxiety and depression. “In other words, it can be said that eating can alter behaviour,” Roy Chowdhary noted. Besides curd, most fermented foods, fresh fruits and vegetables, pickles and even red carrot “kanji”, a fermented drink, can be a healthier way to deal with your drab days than gorging on fatty foods, according to the dietician. She said that oats, banana, wheat bran, cabbage and most fruits examples of prebiotic foods longterm consumption of which may reduce the risk of depression.
