Bobby Jindal clashes with rival
An intra-party feud broke out over Affordable Care Act as Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker unveiled a plan to replace ‘Obamacare; Jindal said they couldn’t afford entitlement programs ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON
A
ll the 17 Republican presidential candidates, including Louisiana’s Indian-American governor Bobby Jindal, want to repeal President Barack Obama’s signature healthcare law, but there is little said about what would come in its place. An intra-party feud broke out August 18 over the Affordable Care Act with Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker unveiling a plan to replace “Obamacare” and Jindal immediately attacking it on the campaign trail. Walker’s plan “makes the mistake President Obama did of creating a new entitlement program at a time when we can’t afford the entitlement programs we’ve got today”, Jindal told a lunch crowd in Le Mars in Iowa, The Advocate news-

illary Clinton’s email problem is getting worse even as frontrunner Democratic presidential contender sought to downplay the controversy surrounding her use of a private server for official work as “political.” Intelligence officials assigned to review emails from Clinton’s time as Secretary of State have so far recommended that 305 documents be referred to agencies for further consultation, according to a report filed with a federal judge on August 17. The 305 documents for review were picked “out of a sample of approximately 20 percent of the Clinton emails,” the State Department said in court papers. After inspectors general for the State Department and for the Intelligence Community raised concerns about the content of the emails, the

That’s what Jindal has pointed to as an “entitlement” in the plan, though he previously has expressed support for some refundable tax credits for health care, the Advocate noted. Jindal later challenged Walker to a debate over healthcare in Iowa, via Twitter and an email blast from his campaign. “Walker’s plan is getting rave reviews from the conservative movement for being a thoughtful, substantive and viable plan to repeal and replace Obamacare and make health care affordable and accessible for Americans,” Walker’s campaign said in an email to The Advocate. “The refundable health care tax credits the governor includes have
been supported by many conservatives because they put health care decision-making in the hands of the American people where it belongs.” Since 2010, Republicans have pledged to repeal and replace Obamacare. The Republican controlled House “has voted 56 times to repeal or undermine the law, but zero times on a plan to replace it”, the Washington Post pointed out. All the 17 Republicans candidates too have promised to repeal the law, “but most of them have said relatively little about what they’d put in its place”, the influential newspaper noted. Front-runner Donald Trump, for instance, has said that his replacement would be “something terrific” and that it would involve making an unspecified deal with hospitals to treat the poor and uninsured.
State Department added intelligence staff to assist in the process. Meanwhile, Senate Judiciary Committee’s Republican Chairman Chuck Grassley asked Clinton attorney David Kendall to explain how he secured three thumb drives containing back up copies of roughly 30,000 emails that Clinton gave to the State Department in printed form last year. Clinton has said that she and her attorney reviewed all of her emails and destroyed ones that they deemed personal. “It appears the FBI has determined that your clearance is not sufficient to allow you to maintain custody of the emails,” Grassley wrote in a letter sent to Kendall. Grassley suggested it was unlikely that a safe would by itself be deemed adequate to hold data classified at the “TOP SECRET/Sensitive Compartmented Information” level.
US FDA approves first Viagra for women WASHINGTON: In what could help millions of women suffering from low sexual desire globally, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the world's first "female Viagra" to treat acquired and generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in premenopausal women. Trump leads race among Republicans, proposes tough immigration law IANS, WASHINGTON
N
ew York real estate mogul Donald Trump holds on the top position in the Republican presidential field by a wide margin and has won the party's trust more than any other candidate, a CNN/ORC poll said. According to Tuesday's survey, 24 percent of Republican registered voters say they support Trump, while the runner-up, former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, has garnered 13 percent, reported Xinhua. The supporting rate for other 15 Republican candidates was stuck in single digits, the survey said. After the first Republican prime-
time primary debate in August, Trump's favorability rate also increased, rising from about 50 percent in a July survey to 58 percent among Republicans, indicated the survey. As many as 58 percent of Republicans believe the Republican Party would have a better chance to win in 2016 with someone else other than Trump among the top tier. Meanwhile, though Trump would not unveil his first batch of policies and governing plans till the second primary debate that starts in September, Republican voters trust him more than any other Republican candidates on several top issues. According to the survey, 45 per-
cent say they trust Trump most on the economy, 44 percent on illegal immigration and 32 percent on his campaign against the extremist group of the Islamic State.* The debate over birthright citizenship has been given a key role in the 2016 US presidential contest by Trump, who raised the issue in his radical immigration plan. The draconian immigration proposal that Trump presented on August 16 calls for the deportation of the country's estimated 11 million undocumented migrants -- was seconded Monday by one of his rivals for the Republican nomination, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker.

Modi’s Bihar bonanza angers Nitish

P
rime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a Rs.1.25 trillion package for election-bound Bihar and attacked Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for his “arrogance” in returning money meant for victims of the 2008 Kosi floods. Shortly After Modi ended his campaign speech attended by thousands at Ara town, Nitish Kumar accused the prime minister of spreading falsehood and insisted the money was Bihar’s right and not a favor. After laying the foundation stones for 10 road projects, Modi told the rally that the package would change the face of Bihar and urged the people to vote the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to power in the assem-

bly polls. The prime minister said Rs.400 billion unspent from an earlier aid package to the state would also be given, taking the total central assistance to Rs.1.65 trillion.
Modi recalled that before the 2014 Lok Sabha election, he had promised a special package of Rs.500 billion to Bihar. “But looking at the dreams of a prosperous

F
ears over deficient rains in the current monsoon season and gradual progress of reforms have prompted global credit ratings agency Moody’s to lower India’s growth forecast for this year by 50 basis points to 7 percent. “As a net importer of commodities, India’s growth outlook benefits from the fall in commodity prices over the past year. It is also little affected by demand from China and more generally slower global trade growth,” Moody’s Investors Service said this week. “We have revised our GDP growth (for India) forecast down to around 7 percent in light of a drier than average monsoon although rainfall was not as low as feared at the start of the season,” it said in its
latest “Global Macro Outlook 2015-16”. “We maintain our forecast that GDP will rise by 7.5 percent in 2016”. it said, adding that economic activity will continue to strengthen, with the implementation of

reforms, gradual as they may be. “One main risk to our forecast is that the pace of reforms slows significantly as consensus behind the need for reform weakens once the least controversial aspects of the government’s plan have been implemented,” it said. One such reform, as indicated above, is the introduction of a panIndia goods and services tax regime, which is a lengthy process -- beginning with an amendment to the Constitution and approvals by at least 15 states. At the same time, the agency held out hope that India may overtake its Asian neighbor this year. “In China, Moody’s maintains its baseline GDP growth forecast of 6.8 percent this year and 6.5 percent in 2016, before falling towards 6 percent by the end of the decade.”
Bihar, it was later to give a bigger package.” Modi accused Nitish Kumar of playing political games and of getting only Rs.120 billion for Bihar from the previous Congress-led UPA government. He also challenged Nitish Kumar’s claim that Bihar was no longer a ‘BIMBARU’ state. “Our chief minister turned very angry and said who is Modi to call Bihar a BIMARU state. He said with authority that Bihar is no longer a BIMARU state. If that’s true, I will be the happiest person,” he noted. Later, addressing another rally in Saharsa district, Modi again targeted Nitish Kumar, the Janata Dal-United leader and the BJP’s arch foe in the election. “The chief minister returned the money given to help the people affected by the Kosi
floods. It hurt me.” “At the time of the Kosi tragedy, an arrogant leader was not worried about the pain and suffering of the flood victims,” Modi said. Miffed over advertisements featuring him and then Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi and referring to the aid provided by Gujarat during the 2008 floods, Nitish Kumar returned the Rs.50 milliongiven for the purpose. Modi said the fear of a return of ‘jungle raj’ was rattling Bihar. “A wind for change is blowing in Bihar. It favors the BJP-led NDA.” Nitish Kumar raised questions about Modi’s package for Bihar. “While I will wait to hear the details of the so-called package announced by Modi, I emphasize (that) special assistance is our right and not a favor,” he tweeted.
Sushma to visit Egypt, Germany NEW DELHI: Close on the heels of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ongoing visit to the United Arab Emirates, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will visit Egypt on August 23. Thereafter, Sushma Swaraj will proceed to Germany. Terrorism and trade are likely to be top on the agenda of Sushma Swaraj’s talks in Egypt as President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi has approved new stringent counter-terrorism laws to fight growing jihadist insurgency in his country. Jihadist groups have stepped up attacks in Egypt after the overthrow of the then president Mohammed Morsi two years ago, and the government has launched a crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood. The party has also demanded rationalization of the city-capital’s power tariff, lower the rates and put a moratorium on future such hikes. It also said people should get their money back, if they were overcharged. “We demand criminal action against the power discoms. They should be sent behind the bars,” AAP leader Deepak Bajpai said,

The AAP also wanted the report of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India to be made public. The Delhi government refrained from making any official statement. But sources said legal

The opposition led by former president Mahinda Rajapaksa conceded defeat. “Let us together build a civilized society, build a consensual government and create a new country with equal opportunities for everybody,” said Wickremesinghe. According to final results, the UNF fell just seven seats short of a parliamentary majority. But members from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) loyal to President Maithripala Sirisena are expected to support the UNF to give it a clear majority. The opposition United People’ s

independence day special India celebrates 69th Independence Day
Modi exhorts India to ‘start up, stand up’
In his second Independence Day address, Modi vows to build a ‘new India’, focuses on domestic issues and gives foreign policy a miss IANS, NEW DELHI
P
rime Minister Narendra Modi on August 15 vowed to end corruption, exhorted India to “start up, stand up”, didn’t announce the eagerlyawaited One Rank One Pension scheme and gave a complete miss to foreign policy. Addressing the nation from the ramparts of the 17th century Red Fort, Modi said in his second Independence Day address that his government was determined to build a new India, including providing electricity to 18,500 power-less villages in the next 1,000 days. Dressed in a cream kurta pyjama, beige jacket and mustard headgear, Modi said his ‘Swachh Bharat’ campaign was the biggest success of his BJP-led government which took office in May last year. He, however, disappointed thousands of ex-service personnel who were awaiting for a concrete announcement on the One-Rank-
One-Pension (OROP) scheme. He said the government had accepted in principle the scheme, but not give any clear roadmap for its adoption, prompting protesting ex-servicemen in Jantar Mantar to cry out “shame, shame”. In a first for August 15, the prime minister did not touch upon foreign policy — despite his
month ago in Ufa, Russia, in a landmark move to ease tensions between the two neighbors. During his one hour and 23minute-long speech, Modi made it clear that there was no place for casteism and communalism in India. He said the country can be free of corruption but we “have to start from the top”.
The prime minister said that a lot had been done in the area of financial inclusion in the past year, and gave the example of his Jan Dhan Yojana, under which some 170 million people have got bank accounts numerous trips — and focussed wholly on domestic issues. There was no mention of India’s neighbors, even Pakistan, in Modi’s speech that began at 7.30 a.m. and ended just before 9 a.m. The miss is all the more stark as Modi had met Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif just over a
“It can be done... Corruption is eating up our country like termites. If you want to get rid of termites, you have to inject medicine.” He pointed out that there was no allegation of corruption against his government. “Corruption had become part of the system. Contractors were run-
ning the nation. We have taken steps to correct the system.” The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), he said, was probing some 800 cases of black money until he took power. Now the CBI was examining 1,800 cases. Already billions of rupees had been collected from people who had begun to declare their ill-gotten assets, he said. In his speech, Modi repeatedly used the word “Team India” to denote a united nation. “This is Team India, a team of 125 crore Indians. This is the team that makes the nation and takes our nation to new heights,” he said. Modi also listed key initiatives of his 15-month government in the area of financial inclusion, fighting graft and inducing transparency, and said true economic progress must touch the bottom of the pyramid. He said the country’s youth be given opportunities and support to become entrepreneurs in their own
right, notably the deprived. “In the coming days, start-ups will be promoted in every corner of the country. Start up India, stand up India,” the prime minister said. “All banks in our country must contribute to a start-up revolution. Each of the 125,000 bank branches must assist one Dalit or one tribal entrepreneur and one woman entrepreneur. They must also become entrepreneurs in the future.” The prime minister said a lot had been done in the area of financial inclusion in the past year, and gave the example of his Jan Dhan Yojana, under which some 170 million people have got bank accounts. Also, 10 crore people enrolled in social security schemes in 100 days. “For the poor, the doors of banks were closed. I said this has to change... Bank accounts are essential for integrating the poor into the financial system. That’s what we have done.”

independence day special India celebrates 69th Independence Day
Modi exhorts India to ‘start up, stand up’
In his second Independence Day address, Modi vows to build a ‘new India’, focuses on domestic issues and gives foreign policy a miss IANS, NEW DELHI
P
rime Minister Narendra Modi on August 15 vowed to end corruption, exhorted India to “start up, stand up”, didn’t announce the eagerlyawaited One Rank One Pension scheme and gave a complete miss to foreign policy.

KOLKATA: BJP member of parliament from West Bengal’s Darjeeling S.S. Ahluwalia on August 15 raised concerns about a separate state for the Gorkhas even as the nation spoke of unity on India’s 69th Independence Day. “When will the Gorkha say I (the Gorkhas) belong to Gorkhaland”? the parliamentarian said at a programme in the hills of Darjeeling. He cited the example of the Biharis hailing from Bihar, the Punjabis coming from the land of seven rivers and the Tamils belonging to
Tamil Nadu - all residing in states based on their ethnicity. The ethnic group of Gorkhas has long been demanding a separate state in north Bengal. The BJP leadership in the state was quick to distance itself from Ahluwalia’s statements and said the party wants unity in West Bengal. “Maybe he (Ahluwalia) made an emotional speech,” BJP MLA Shamik Bhattacharya said. Prime minister Narendra Modi, in his Independence Day speech, reiterated the need for unity in India.

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal unfurled the national flag at Mohali, adjoining Chandigarh. Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, sporting a saffron headgear (pagri) and a saffron half jacket, hoisted the flag in the historic town of Kurukshetra, about 100 km from Punjab. Hyderabad traffic police launch body-worn cameras HYDERABAD: For the first time in the country, traffic policemen in Hyderabad will wear cameras on their bodies as part of an initiative to bring transparency and accountability in traffic management. Telangana Home Minister N. Narasimha Reddy on Friday launched the program by issuing 100 ‘Body Worn Cameras’ to the frontline officers. He said this was for the first time in the country that policemen would have such equipment. The body worn camera is user
friendly and simple one click record. Citizens can notice the recording on the front facing 2.5 inch LCD Screen. Protected files and encrypted log of events makes it free from manipula-

The minister said this was one of the initiatives taken by the Telangana government to modernize policing in the city and to bring it on par with the policing in developed countries. He said such measures would make police force people friendly and also bring transparency and accountability in traffic management. Police Commissioner Mahender Reddy said that in the absence of such cameras it was always difficult to establish who was at fault.
BENGALURU: A 22-year-old mentally-ill prisoner succumbed to death late Sunday after he was critically injured in a shootout at a state-run hospital here, police said. “The under trial, Vishwanath, succumbed to injuries he sustained during the shootout at Nimhans,” Additional Police Commissioner C.H. Pratap Reddy told IANS. In a tweet, Reddy said: “Nimhans prisoner operated upon. Despite the best efforts, he (prisoner) succumbed to the injuries sustained during commando operation.” The shootout took place around 7 p.m. at the state-run National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (Nimhans) where Vishwanath locked himself up in a room after firing about 20 rounds indiscriminately with a .303 rifle he snatched from a guard escorting him from the central jail for a check-up. Known to be a notorious rowdy, Vishwanath was arrested in July 2012 in Bengaluru on a murder charge and lodged in the central jail on the city’s outskirts since then, pending trial. “After jail doctors recommended treatment for Vishwanath’s mental illness and fiery temper, he was referred to Nimhans for misbehaving with other inmates and turning violent,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) B.S. Lokesh Kumar told
reporters earlier. According to a witness, gun shots were heard around 3 p.m. from a patients’ ward, resulting in commotion, panic and screaming by many in-patients. As Vishwanath was being taken inside the hospital, he asked the escorting guard to allow him to go to the toilet.

Kerala inks agreement with Adanis for Vizhinjam port IANS, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM
T
he Kerala government on August 17 inked an agreement with Adani Ports for the proposed Vizhinjam port, 25 years after the project was first mooted. The agreement for the construction of the port was signed between state Ports Secretary James Varghese and Adani Vizhinjam Port Private Limited CEO Santhosh Kumar Mahapatra in the Durbar Hall of the state secretariat. The central government too will participate in the project, to be completed in three phases at a cost of
around Rs.75.25 billion. Though the first phase is expected to be ready in four years, Adani Ports officials have told Chief Minister Oom-
men Chandy they would finish it in around two years. After the signing of the agreement, Adani Ports chief Gautam
Adani said the Vizhinjam port would be made functional in less than 1,000 days. “We will make Vizhinjam one of the world’s largest mega transhipment container terminals. Vizhinjam is our 8th port in India. We have already initiated the planning and engineering work on this project. We promised to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy that we will kick off the construction on November 1, 2015, the Kerala foundation day. Our objective is to make the port operational in a record time of less than 1,000 days,” Adani said. Chandy said it was a historic occasion since the port project was
the largest investment in any one project in the state. “We are committed to clear all doubts and fears about the project. We assure of our complete support for Adani Ports also,” the chief minister said. Early in the day, Adani called on the top political leaders of Kerala ahead of the signing of the agreement. Adani, who arrived here along with a 10-member team, first called on Chandy and his cabinet colleagues. “This was a pre-agreement meeting. We will go ahead with this project and talk to all those who have expressed concerns about the project. All concerns would be addressed,” Chandy said.

McDonald, who was himself a chess player, said the idea for the film was born out of “sheer curiosity”.

ctor Nawazuddin Siddiqui says watching a film like “Manjhi - The Mountain Man” on a small laptop doesn’t justify the purpose of watching a movie of that huge scale and depth. Interacting with journalists during the film’s promotion, Nawazuddin was asked about business getting hit due to the film’s leak. “All I can say is that, a story and a film like this cannot be watched on a small laptop. A story where there is a mountain and a person is standing in front of it, the depth of such a visual can’t be seen on a small laptop screen. So it’s my sincere request to people who have
already seen the film that they come to the theatres to watch it again,” he said. The full version of the film was leaked online a week back. Nawazuddin said Viacom 18, the film’s distributors, were handling all legal matters related to the incident. Director Ketan Mehta echoed Nawazuddin’s views. “The film has a huge scale and if people prefer to watch such a film on their laptops, then I don’t know what to say. The experience of such a film is best felt on the big screen. All I want to say is that we have made the film with a lot of passion and now we only hope is that the film reaches the audience.” The film, which also stars Radhika Apte, releases on August 21.

outed as the “MahaMahabharat” of modern times, “Brothers” is a high octane melodramatic action film from the stable of Dharma Productions which uses the fighting ring as the Kurukshetra. It is a tale of two brothers, David (Akshay) and Monty (Sidharth) from a dysfunctional Christian family whose patriarch is the alcoholic street fighter Gerson Fernandes (Jackie Shroff) aka Garry. Designed as a traditional fighting film, where the fighters are the usual self-destructive characters, here the fighting, also acts as a setting, more than a world, where the fragility of the relationship builds the tension of the saga. The two brothers, Akshay and Sidharth steal the show with realis-

Mahatma Gandhi Marg creating excitement in the air filled with the unrelenting drum beats of Malayalam group and zestful ‘lazim-dance’ led by Maharashtra Mandal group. Adding to the enthusiasm was the glaring music from SAHIL/LA Tan float and the Jesse White Tumbler’s team taking the pride of place with its breath-taking acrobatic jumps providing an exciting conclusion to the colorful India Independence Day parade. There were several new entrants in parade floats, including Hanuman Temple, CTA (Chicago Transit Authority), ComEd, AAPI (Asian American Physicians of Indian Origin) led by its president Dr. Suresh Reddy. The spirit of celebrations was simply unabated as it continued its joyful frenzy at the Mela hosted by ‘Hi India’ in conjunction with FIA-Chicago immediately after the passing of the last parade unit. It was a new energetic music and singing that was unleashed at the Republic Bank of Chicago outdoor premises thus marking the beginning of a grand musical Mela which provided an exhilarating conclusion to the weekend of celebrations in honor of the India Independence Day. Iftekhar Shareef, events convener, served as the emcee and conducted the ceremonies on the reviewing stand which was complemented by a host of other Trustees with a singing of Indian national anthem drawing the closure on the parade. The FIA is already planning a large mela in Warren Park next year. Preceding the grand parade led by Parade Chair Smita Shah, FIA-Chicago hosted on August 14 a glittering Gala Banquet that showcased the exciting blend of musical amalgamation by a talented group from India belting out soulful singing performances activating the atmosphere at the Meadows Club. The Banquet unveiled inspiring patriotic remarks and musical presentations that lasted late into the night. Consul General of India Dr. Ausaf Sayeed, chief guest, in his spirited eloquence offered greetings at the banquet and the parade while generously thanking FIA and its team of leaders for hosting grand festivities in honor of India’s Independence. He praised the Indian American c o m m u n i t y f o r c e l e b r a t i n g In d i a’s Independence with such great pomp and glory all across the Midwest and added that Indian Americans served as a great bridge between two democracies. Dr Ausuf Sayeed praised the FIA leaders and its legion of guests as pride of India and pride of the US. He admired the burgeoning strength of Indians in the US and significant
appointments of Indian Americans in major multinational companies highlighting the accomplishments and contributions of Indian Americans who, he said, were proudly serving as brand ambassadors of India. The Consul General said that he would like to convene an annual conference of Indian organizations to foster the integration of the Indian communities. Dr. Ausaf Sayeed recalled the visits of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the US which, he said, would remain indelible for many generations to come and the visit of US President Barack Obama which, he added, was historically significant in the IndoUS relations. He applauded the US efforts to include India in the United Nations Security Council. In conclusion, the Consul General specially complemented the tall leaders of FIA and called on the single flag-hoisting event on the Daley plaza as a landmark event worthy to be cherished. FIA president Dr. Indrajit Patel said that he was excited and pleased at the success of the three major events. He thanked the supporters, sponsors, and business and community leaders for their steadfast support and for pulling together as a team to host such a memorable celebration. Dr. Patel said that FIA-Chicago took immense pride in hosting these 2-day festivities that sought to honor India’s Independence while celebrating the reigning spirit of Indian democracy, cultural heritage and thriving Indo-American friendship. He emphasized on Prime Minister Modi’s doctrine of unity, friendship, cooperation and a sense of community in his remarks. Several awards were presented at the Banquet held at Medows club led by FIA’s Banquet Chair Neil Patel in recognition of outstanding community services and exemplary leadership contributions. The awardees included Dr. Bharat Barai, Syed Hussaini of WinTrust, Nakul Singh Chand of Air-India, Dr. Chittaranjan Patel, Dr. Umang Patel, Shri Sahab Singh, of Animal Husbandry in U.P. Narendra Patel who was posthumously honoured was fondly remembered for his exceptional contributions to the community and FIA. A special acknowledgement award was presented to Keerthi Kumar Ravoori, immediate past-president, for his meritorious services to FIA. Iftekhar Shareef again reminded the community not to get misled by two individuals who after losing FIA-Chicago
elections in 2010 had formed another FIA manipulating the name of FIA by a few words and conducting events in Schaumburg Village. They are illegally collecting donations and sponsorships from community in the name of FIA-Chicago and confusing the donors. Shareef reminded the other group to cease from doing such illegal activities in the name of FIA-Chicago. FIA-Chicago has no issue if they use other names except FIA as it is a brand created 32 years ago by the founders of FIA-Chicago. Shareef warned of legal challenges if the other group did not stop such activities using the name of FIA. Dr. Indrajit Patel thanked the Parade team encompassing Kanti Patel, Iftekhar Shareef, Ajai Agnihotri, Babu Patel and Anil Pillai for providing valuable support in hosting the parade while thanking Syed Hussaini of WinTrust and Niranjan Shah of Globetrotters Engineering Corporation for their robust sponsorship support. He also thanked the Banquet team led by chairmen Neal and Raj Patel along with Veenod Patel, for providing the supervisory support. Naperville’s first India Day parade
BY A STAFF WRITER APERVILLE, IL -- The first India Day parade in Naperville, IL to observe the 69th anniversary of India’s independence from the British was an unprecedented success watched by some 10,000 spectators, many of whom came from neighboring suburbs and states. A colorful procession of 64 participants with 15 intricately-decorated floats sponsored by various community organizations, businesses and restaurants wended its way along the parade route in Naperville downtown. Several local and international dance groups representing the diverse dance forms and music of India were part of the procession which ended in Central Park, Naperville. Thousands of enthusiastic Indian Americans and members of Naperville community lined the procession route waving flags of the United States and India. The parade was aired live by TV Asia and NCTV17. The parade marshal was Mayor Emeritus
N
of Naperville George Pradel, resplendent in a Rajasthani Pagdi (headgear). Naperville Mayor Steve Chirico and India’s Consul General Dr. Ausaf Sayeed were the chief guests of the event. Other dignitaries who participated in the parade were Illinois Lt. Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti, the States’s first Latino to hold the office, State Treasurer Mike Frerichs, IL Senator Michael Connelly, Rep Grant Wehrli, Rep Stephanie Kifowit, Naperville City Council and several local elected officials and leaders. Naperville Fire Chief Mark Puknaitis and Chief of Police Robert Marshall attended. Aurora Alderman Rick Mervine and Alderwoman Lynne Johnson were enthusiastic participants in the parade as well as the celebrations. The elected officials who spoke at the event said they were pleasantly surprised to note the overwhelming response to the parade given the fact that this was the first such event by the Indian American community in Naperville. Sanguinetti said that she hailed the diversity that was being celebrated, adding

that there is need for more diverse cultures in leadership so that all the races and colors can be adequately represented. Krishna Bansal, chairman of the Naperville Indian Community Outreach, said that the parade celebrated the integration of the Indian American community and was the successful culmination of an idea mooted a couple of years ago and actively encouraged by then Mayor George Pradel and the Naperville City Council. He said that the parade this year was only a beginning and would be surpassed in both magnitude and participation in the coming years. He made a strong plea for greater participation of the Indian American community in the political process. Mayor Chirico said that the Indian American community was an integral part of Naperville, enriching it with color, music, food and dance. Other speakers lauded the Indian American community for contributing to the business and cultural heritage of the city. The parade was followed by a ‘mela’ (fair)
and cultural event at Central Park featuring food, jewelry, apparel and music and dance. While the parade was sponsored by the India’s national carrier Air India, Celebration was sponsored by the consortium of 21 Technology Companies of Naperville with a message that they are instrumental in creating local jobs. The parade meant many things to many people. For Indians born in the United States, it was an introduction to the diversity of the nation of their ancestors. The very young felt it was “similar to July 4”. For some die-hard residents of the suburbs, it obviated the necessity to travel all the way to Chicago’s Devon Avenue to watch the India Day parade. The successful culmination of the event was also a tribute to members of the NICO who toiled for days, with many spending sleepless nights to ensure that every minute detail from the space between floats to the vendor booths to scores of volunteers were handled deftly to make the pioneering event in Naperville a memorable one.

Robbery does not seem to be the motive behind the murder as some $2,000 and a blank check were found in his pocket. Bhola is the son-in-law of Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa, an 83-year-old human rights activist who has been on a hunger strike since January 16, 2015, to seek the release of political prisoners who have completed their sentences. ALAPIO sets up free medical clinic in LA
Dr Bharat Patel
BY A STAFF WRITER OS ANGELES, CA-- The Association of Los Angeles Physicians of Indian Origin (ALAPIO) has joined hands with Lestonnac Clinics to start the ALAPIO MacArthur Park Clinic here. According to Dr. Bharat Patel, the Indian American chairman of ALAPIO, the association had pledged at a fundraiser last August with Shreya Ghoshal at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium that ALAPIO would use the funds raised for starting and funding a free medical clinic for the indigenous Los Angeles population. The MacArthur Park facility, located at 2010 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 801, will offer free services to indigenous patients on Thursdays and Sundays. ALAPIO has a commitment to provide the physicians and the venue; Lestonnac Clinics will handle the rest of the services. Patients who want to take advantage of this service should call (213) 438-6322 to find out more about appointments and eligibility criteria. ALAPIO has a membership vast in its spectrum of specialization, noted a press release, and recently, Drs. Jignesh Patel, Ninna Patel, Bharat Patel, Elizabeth Paul, Joy Paul and Parvin Syal spent time at the Anaheim City free clinic, where about 2,500 patients were examined.

Man pleads guilty: plot to kill Obama
BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK -- One of the four men arrested in New York in February and accused of plotting to join the Islamic State group and wage war against the United States has pleaded guilty. Federal prosecutors say Abdurasul Hasanovich Juraboev has admitted conspiring to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. Authorities say the 25-year-old posted online threats saying he would kill President Barack Obama in an act of martyrdom. They say he planned to travel to Syria to fight on behalf of the Islamic State and said he would commit terrorist acts in the US if he couldn’t leave the country. Prosecutors say he discussed killing the President or planting a bomb on Coney Island.

Man, cousin convicted of plotting murder of wife BY A STAFF WRITER A S H V I L L E . T N – Tw o Indian American cousins were convicted of conspiring to commit murder by a jury at a Murfreesboro, Tenn. Court. Pratik Patel and his cousin Kalpesh Patel, residents in the Nashville area of Tennessee, were held accountable by the Murfreesboro city court on August 13 for trying to arrange the murder of Pratik’s wife Krupa in Rutherford County in 2013. Both men were arrested in September 2013 after they approached construction worker Chris Robinson from Rutherford County who testified that the Patel cousins asked him to find someone to commit the
N
murder for $50,000. “Kalpesh was asking about having Pratik’s wife killed,” Robinson said. Robinson, however, alerted the authorities who set up a taped call with
Pratik and arrested the duo. “I feel for the family. I feel for Mrs. Patel. But they tried to kill her. But for Chris Robinson, she would have been dead. Justice was done,” assistant district attorney general Sarah Davis was quoted as saying after the verdict. According to Davis, Pratik wanted to get out of an arranged marriage with his wife but had religious objections to a divorce. “We’re very disappointed in the verdict and plan to appeal the case,” said Ed Yarbrough, who represented Pratik after the verdict. Both men face prison sentences between 23 and 90 years. A sentencing date has been set for October 16.
Indians grab top spots at National Chemist meet BY A STAFF WRITER HILADELPHIA (PA) -- Dozens of youth chemists flooded Philadelphia on June 22 for the annual “You Be the Chemist: National Challenge,” and three Indian Americans finished in the top four. Aum Upadhyay, an eighth grader from Washington; Raghav Ramanujam, a sixth grader from California; and Rafay Ashary, an eighth grader from Texas, finished first, second and third runners-up to 10-year-old champion Daniel Liu, of Ohio. The 11-round challenge, which grows increasingly more difficult each step of the way, pitted the nation’s top young chemists against each other, with the three Indian Americans being narrowly ousted by Liu, the youngest competitor of the meet and youngest champion ever. The “You Be the Chemist” Challenge started with nearly 40,000 competitors participating on the local and state levels throughout the previous school year. The top 36 students qualified to compete for the national competition, as 350 friends and family of the contestants cheered on

the youth. For finishing in their respective positions, Upadhyay, Ramanujam and Ashary were awarded $5,000, $2,500 and $1,000, respectively, in scholarships to put
towards future educational use. The top four students also received graphing calculators, medals, chemistry kits and gift certificates to the Discovery Channel store.

f nature continued to inspire designers of bridal wear, others chose to create collections that reflected the grandeur of cities or even an empire at the star-studded seventh edition of BMW India Bridal Fashion Week in Delhi. As the opening designers, Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla presented their bridal collection titled ‘Varanasi’, which paid homage to the city. “Varanasi has always left a deep impression upon us. Its history, energy, spirituality and symbolism as well as its astonishing legacy of craftsmanship. “We’ve worked with weaves indigenous to the city over the years. But there is always a moment... a time when those impressions are translated into a solid and dedicated expression. This is exactly that moment for us. And the collection is the result,” Jani told IANS. Their collection showcased the rich legacy of silks, brocades, gold and silver thread work and also carpet weaving. Ashima and Leena Singh, on

With 18 ensembles, the collection consisted of bright coloured lehenga choli and saris. P NEW DELHI: Clear skin and a glowing complexion are a sign of good health but during the monsoon, it needs intensive care. According to Amul S. Bahl, founder of wellness solutions provider God’s Own Store, one can keep skin healthy and glowing for years to come by following natural tips below: * Pump it up with the liquids: Hydrated skin glows and radiates happiness. Drink plenty of water.
eople who are in their 50s and are “successful agers” healthy, active, sociable and well off - are more at the risk of harmful drinking than their less successful peers, researchers have warned. Harmful drinking is a “middleclass phenomenon” that may be a hidden health and social problem in otherwise successful older people, they added. “We can sketch the problem of harmful drinking among people aged 50 or over as a ‘middle class phenomenon’. These are healthy people with higher income, higher educational attainment, socially
more active and are more likely to drink at harmful levels,” the authors wrote in the BMJ Open journal. Higher risk of harmful drinking was not linked to feelings of loneli-
ness, anxiety, sadness or depression but it was more likely among men living on their own, including those who were separated or divorced. Caring responsibilities lowered
the probability of being at higher risk among women, but religious belief did not - for either sex. Employment status did not seem to be a significant factor but women who had retired were more likely to be at higher risk, the study noted. Income was associated with a higher risk but only among women while smoking, higher educational attainment and good health were all linked to heightened risk in both male and female. The authors analysed over 9000 responses to the English Longitudinal Survey of Ageing (ELSA) - a long term study of a representative sample of those aged 50 and above living independently at home in England.
