India, in January, had expressed its concern over a bill to change rules on H-1B visas that will impact the IT industry and Indian techies working in America. The High-Skilled Integrity and

Fairness Act of 2017, introduced in the House of Representatives by California Congressman Zoe Lofgren, calls for doubling the minimum salary of H-1B visa holders to $130,000 from the current minimum of $60,000 — a move that could impact Indian techies. Calling the visit as a good start to bilateral exchanges following a new US administration, Modi recalled his “positive conversation with President Donald Trump and the shared commitment to further strengthening of ties that have grown deeper in the last two-anda-half years”. “In this regard, he recognized Congress’s strong bipartisan support for the India-US partnership,” the statement added.

The moment everything is done, arrests shall take place.” On Wednesday, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the fake currency.

“A Prime Minister who can’t even print notes properly; how can he run the country? He has reduced the whole nation into a laughing stock,” the Aam Aadmi Party leader tweeted. Congress termed it an “epic disaster”. Rohit, a customer care executive who got the notes, reported the matter to the police.

Sena-BJP tussle in Mumbai MUMBAI: The Shiv Sena finished on top of a hung BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Thursday but the BJP said it could take control of India’s richest civic body with the backing of independents. Shiv Sena activists celebrated earlier in the day as it appeared it was set to take control of the BMC but it finished with just 84 of the 227 seats. The BJP came close with 81 seats. Any party or combine will need 114 corporators for a simple majority. Across Maharashtra, however, the Bharatiya Janata Party made major gains in elections held for municipal bodies. The Shiv Sena victory came in Thane. BJP Mumbai President Ashish Shelar said the party had bagged 81 seats in Mumbai and had the support of four independents and that it was in a position to claim the crucial post of Mayor.

JNU redux at DU: Violent clashes over Umar Khalid invite IANS, NEW DELHI

V

iolent clashes broke out between two student groups outside Ramjas College here on Wednesday, leaving many injured as police rounded up dozens of protesters, a day after the ABVP forced the suspension of an event to be addressed by JNU student Umar Khalid, jailed last year for sedition. At least a dozen students and a teacher were wounded after a group demonstrated against the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) — the RSS student wing that dominates the students union in Delhi University. Some of them tried to march to the nearby Maurice Nagar Police Station but were stopped by a group of ABVP students. Police blocked

the road from Patel Chest to the police station with barricades amid slogan shouting by the two warring groups. Some students were locked inside the college as All India Students

Association (AISA) activists alleged ABVP members surrounded them and didn’t allow the march. “We were attacked, police did nothing. Our students were bleeding. They hurled bricks at us,”

tweeted Shehla Rashid, who was also invited for the two-day seminar and was at Ramjas during the clashes. She alleged that the ABVP activists, with the help of police, “unleashed brutal violence on our peaceful march”. The ABVP, however, denied resorting to violence or forcing the college to cancel the invite to Khalid and Rashid. “There was no violence. The ABVP always promotes discussion. But you need to maintain decorum...The college students and teachers didn’t want Khalid,” ABVP leader Abhishek Verma said. Those wounded in the clashes included English Department teacher Prasanta Chakravarty, who was admitted to Hindu Rao hospital with minor injuries.

UP CM’s donkey jibe rocks political scene Akhilesh Yadav’s ‘Gujarat ke Gadhe’ jibe might have been meant to score electoral points, but it has inadvertently sharpened focus on the Indian wild ass

‘PSLV launch was not aimed to set any record’ While the numbers heightened the scientists’ morale at ISRO, some point out that setting a world record was indeed not the main target of the PSLV launch K.S. JAYARAMAN, BENGALURU

U

ttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav’s “Gujarat ke Gadhe (Donkeys of Gujarat)” jibe might have been meant to score points in a bitter electoral battle, but it has inadvertently sharpened focus on the Indian wild ass, promoted in a TV spot by no less than megastar Amitabh Bachchan in his capacity as the state’s brand ambassador. In fact, the conservation of the species (Equus hemionus Khur), which is found only in Gujarat — having been rendered extinct in south India, Pakistan and Afghanistan — has earned the state plaudits from wildlife experts. “The conservation of the Indian wild ass is an exemplary success story for the world to follow. The Gujarat government has, over the years, done a great job,” Wildlife Institute of India (WII) Director V.B. Mathur told IANS. Mathur, along with experts like Nita Shah, also of the WII, has worked on conserving the species for 22 years, back from the time when it was on the verge of extinction. Today, the animal numbers well over 4,500 in the wild. Shekhar Niraj, Head of TRAFFIC, a wildlife trade monitoring

network that works in alliance with the WWF, said the species still faces several challenges for its survival. “It’s one of those rare examples where both the species and its habitat are troubled. It is still threatened but its population has gone up in Gujarat,” Niraj told IANS. The natural habitat of Indian wild ass is Rann of Kutch, where the animals are also referred to as

Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani said Akhilesh had insulted the state with his remarks. But then, without perhaps realizing he was doing so, Akhilesh was only paying Modi back in his own coin. “Riders and Guardians of the Rann” for their ability to run at speeds of over 60 km per hour. According to government records, the Indian wild ass was on the verge of extinction around 1970 due to lack of conservation efforts and a prevalent epidemic. A census in 2014 counted 4,451 animals spread over 15,000 sq km in Gujarat. This was 454 more than the count of the 2009 census. The present population is estimated to

be more than 4,800. “It’s not right to drag the endangered species into political feuds because it affects the conservation efforts. We should rather feel proud the species could be saved and now attracts tourists from across the world,” V.P Singh, a Uttar Pradesh-based wildlife conservator, told IANS. What then is the fuss all about? Akhilesh Yadav, speaking at a rally recently, pointed to the TV spot — obliquely referring to Bachchan — to target Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah. “An advertisement is there on donkeys. I urge the biggest actor of the century not to advertise donkeys of Gujarat,” Yadav said. Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said Akhilesh Yadav, had insulted the state with his remarks. But then, without perhaps realizing he was doing so, Akhilesh was only paying Modi back in his own coin. During the campaign for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Modi had sneered at the Lion Safari, a dream project of Akhilesh Yadav to introduce the Asiatic lions (native to Gujarat) in his home town of Safai. Modi had then wondered how the state government could take care of lions when “they had not been able to take care of (people of) the state”.

ewspaper headlines recently screamed that India’s polar satellite launch vehicle (PSLV) created history by lobbing 104 satellites in a single mission, shattering the Russian record of 37. What was missed out was the intricacy required to do so. While the numbers no doubt heightened the morale of scientists of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), some of them take pains to point out that setting a world record was really not the primary objective of the launch — though, justifiably, the event boosted the national pride. “Frankly ISRO does not claim it wanted to set any record,” K. Sivan, Director, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Thiruvananthapuram, which makes the PSLV and all other rockets for ISRO, told this correspondent on the phone. Space scientists note that the number of satellites launched by a rocket in one mission is not comparable to scoring runs in cricket. They say that smaller and light-weight satellites — like the ones launched in last week’s mission — have made it possible for rockets to carry several of them, their number limited only by the space available in the rocket and its carrying capacity.

But what is required is a lot of engineering innovations for stacking the tiny satellites in the available space and ejecting them sequentially in the desired orbits without colliding with each other. “Each mission of ISRO has a different kind of challenge and we gain confidence by meeting the

For example, a mission in 2001 required two satellites — one of them belonging to an overseas customer — to be placed in different orbits, something ISRO had not done before. But scientists took up the challenge . “That ISRO created a world record by scoring a century in space is a hype invented by the media,” Y.S.Rajan, a distinguished professor in ISRO, told IANS. In his post-launch address, the chairman tempered jubilation with sound reasoning by saying that the launch was not undertaken to set any new “record”.

Mass deportations on the cards Trump team sets stage for sending people to their countries and undocumented immigrants held for traffic violations or shop-lifting will be targeted along with those convicted of serious crimes IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump has directed his administration to enforce the nations immigration laws more aggressively, unleashing the full force of the federal government to find, arrest and deport those in the country illegally, regardless of whether they have committed serious crimes. Documents released this week by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) revealed the broad scope of the President’s ambitions: to publicize crimes by undocumented immigrants, strip such immigrants of privacy protection, enlist local police officers as enforcers, erect new detention facilities, discourage asylum seekers and, ultimately, speed up deportations,

National park police was investigating how the banner got on, the NBC News reported. The banner, measuring about three feet by 20 feet, was affixed by nylon rope to the wall of the public observation deck at the base of the statue, according to the National Park Service. New travel order release delayed WASHINGTON: The White House announced that it was is delaying the release of a revised executive order on travel and refugees until next week, an official said. The official did not provide any explanation for the delay, The Hill magazine reported. This week, White House policy adviser Stephen Miller told Fox News that the new order will largely resemble the old one, but that the changes will be “mostly minor technical differences”. Miller stressed that the revisions, though minor, will help the policy pass legal muster. He did not provide further details about what the changes will entail, but said they would result in “a new and different executive order”.

the New York Times reported. Undocumented immigrants arrested for traffic violations or shoplifting will be targeted along with those convicted of more serious

crimes. The memos do not alter US immigration laws, but take a much tougher approach towards enforcing existing measures. There are an estimated 11 million

illegal immigrants in the US. White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said the new guidelines would not usher in mass deportations, but were designed to empower agents to enforce laws already on the books. “The President wanted to take the shackles off individuals in these agencies,” Spicer said. “The message from this White House and the Department of Homeland Security is that those people who are in this country, who pose a threat to our safety, or who have committed a crime, will be the first to go,” he added. Major steps outlined in the papers included hiring more Customs and Border Protection agents, expanding a programme that gives DHS Secretary John Kelly more power in directing field operations, initiating a wall along the US-Mexican border,

and stepping up the effort to “return aliens to contiguous countries”. The guidelines revealed sweeping changes from the approach taken by former President Obama. The only Obama policy that survived was Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), a program that allowed people who entered the country illegally as children to stay, usually for work or school, the Hill magazine reported. But the White House said that even DACA could be eliminated as Trump seeks a tough approach. Meanwhile, a banner reading “Refugees Welcome” was unfurled atop the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty, after the DHS announced expanded immigration enforcement policies. National park police officers were investigating how the banner got on, NBC News reported.

US President picks new national security adviser IANS, WASHINGTON

McMaster is a highly regarded military officer and soldier who is known for his roles in the Gulf War, the Iraq War and the war in Afghanistan. He also served as a special assistant to Gen. David

Petraeus when he was commander of the US-led coalition forces in Iraq during the 2007 troop surge, CNN reported. Trump called McMaster “a man of tremendous talent and tremendous experience” as he introduced his selection to reporters at Mar-aLago, Florida, where he has spent the holiday weekend interviewing candidates for the post. “I watched and read a lot over the last two days,” Trump said. “He is highly respected by every-

Protections for transgender students withdrawn IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump’s administration revoked federal guidelines specifying that transgender students have the right to use public school restrooms that match their gender identity, a media report said. Officials with the federal Education and Justice departments notified the US Supreme Court late Wednesday that the administration is ordering the nation’s schools to disregard memos the former President Barack Obama’s administration issued during the past two years regarding transgender student rights, The Washington Post daily reported. Those memos had stated that

prohibiting transgender students from using facilities that align with their gender identity violates federal anti-discrimination laws. The two-page “Dear colleague” letter from the Trump administration, which is set to go to the

nation’s public schools, does not offer any new guidance, instead it says that the earlier directive needed to be withdrawn because it lacked extensive legal analysis, did not go through a public vetting process, sowed confusion and drew

legal challenges. The administration said that it would not rely on the prior interpretation of the law in the future. The departments wrote that the Trump administration wants to “further and more completely consider the legal issues involved,” and said that there must be “due regard for the primary role of the states and local school districts in establishing educational policy,” the daily said. Although it offered no clarity or direction to schools that have transgender students, the letter added that “schools must ensure that all students, including LGBT — lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender — students, are able to learn and thrive in a safe environment.”

Administration and the Russian government,” he added. “Fundamental national security questions remain unanswered, including whether General Flynn went rogue in discussing sanctions with Russian agents, or whether he was directed to,” he mentioned. US President Trump had asked for Flynn’s resignation after reports surfaced that the latter had misled Vice-President Mike Pence about his interaction with Russian Ambassador to the US, Sergey Kislyak, during the transition period prior to the mogul’s inauguration and even before the November 8 election.

The operation aims at indiscriminately eliminating the “residual/latent threat of terrorism”, consolidating the gains made in other military operations, and further ensuring the security of Pakistan’s borders, a statement issued by Inter-Services Public Relations said. Pakistan Air Force, Pakistan Navy, Civil Armed Forces and other security and law enforcing agencies will actively participate in and “intimately support” the armed forces’ efforts to eliminate the menace of terrorism from the country, the statement added. “The effort entails conduct of

Turkish army lifts ban on wearing veil ANKARA: Turkey’s Defense Ministry lifted the ban on female officers wearing the veil, local media reported. The Ministry on Wednesday issued a decree to the commanders of land, air and naval forces noting that female military personnel are allowed to wear headscarves if they wish, Efe news reported. The decree is considered a significant change for the Turkish military, as the veil has always been considered a political symbol of Islam in Turkey. Since the republic was declared in Turkey in 1923, women covering their heads in public has been a matter of social debate. A fragile ceasefire put in place at the end of December 2016 involved President Bashar al-Assad’s army and several large rebels groups. It excludes hardline Islamist factions such as the Islamic State terror organization and the al-Qaida offshoot Nusra Front, which has changed its names several times and now flies the banner of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham. Because they are located outside of our solar system, these planets are scientifically known as exoplanets. This exoplanet system is called TRAPPIST-1, named for The Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope (TRAPPIST) in Chile. Based on their densities, all of the TRAPPIST-1 planets are likely to be rocky, according to the new results published on Wednesday in the journal Nature.

India to test Aussie mettle It will be difficult for Australia to prevail over the Indian batting line-up which has the likes of Virat Kohli, Murli Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane ‘Underdog Australia will give tough fight’ PUNE: Despite admitting that his team will start the upcoming fourTest series against India as underdogs, Australia captain Steven Smith has asserted that the visitors are confident of Steven Smith giving a tough fight to the hosts. The Virat Kohli-led Indian team have won six consecutive Test series and are unbeaten in their last 19 Test matches — a streak which started in August 2015. With star off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and left-armer Ravindra Jadeja in excellent form and the Indian pace attack also showing promise, the hosts are expected to be a handful for what is being seen as one of the weakest Australian teams to tour the subcontinent. Former off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has even predicted that the Australians will lose all four Test matches. But Smith begs to differ. “I guess we are the underdogs in this series. We hear comments like Harbhajan said he expects us to lose 4-0. That’s not how we feel. We want to compete here against India and it wi going to be difficult for us. They have got some quality players in their lineup from one to 11,” Smith said.

fter thrashing New Zealand (3-0), England (4-0) and Bangladesh (one-off Test) at home, India will look to stretching their winning streak when the hosts take on Australia in the opening match of their four-match Test cricket series, starting here this week. With India being unbeaten since 2012 at home — winning 17 matches and having drawn three, it will be an uphill task for the visitors as the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium pitch is likely to be spin-friendly. On the other hand, the hosts, who have played more than four Test series at home this season are familiar with the surface and conditions and will be looking to make the most from the match. In the batting department, the only problem for India is the opening pair of Murali Vijay and K.L.

Rahul, who were inconsistent throughout the season. Both batsmen have opened the innings 12 times with an average of 18.91. But both players showed their temperament despite the poor form so the team management will likely to go with the same pair for the opening Test. The middle-order looked perfect at the moment as they had delivered when needed the most. In the bowling department, star spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja will be the gamechangers for the Virat Kohli-led confident Indian side. Kohli can also include spinning all-rounder Jayant Yadav in place of medium pacer Ishant Sharma because in the recently concluded series against England, the Haryana off-spinner contributed handsomely with both bat and ball in the three Test matches he played. Australia, on the other hand, is also suffering from the poor form of

India not bothered about Australia: Confident Kohli PUNE: India cricket captain Virat Kohli sounded confident as he said that his side is not bothered about Australia and is instead focussed on delivering up to its potential in the four-match Test series, starting here this week. India come into the series after a successful home campaign which has seen them thrashing New Zealand (3-0), England (4-0) and Bangladesh (one-off Test). Moreover, India are unbeaten since

their opener Matt Renshaw. In the practice game against India A in Mumbai, the 20-year-old failed to impress his captain Steve Smith. So it will be a challenge for Smith who will have to select one among Renshaw or Usman Khawaja. The middle-order, which consist

couple of days after the cricketing world was abuzz with the news of Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s removal as the skipper of IPL franchise Rising Pune Supergiants, the just-appointed Jharkhand skipper, in his typical unfazed avatar, regaled his teammates with stories from the past in a rare train journey from Ranchi to Howrah station to take part in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Kolkata for the Ranji Trophy. This time, he wanted to travel by train since it has been long he last boarded a train,” team manager P.N.

Singh told reporters at a city hotel. Heeding Dhoni’s request, the team boarded an AC two-tier compartment of the Hatia-Howrah

18616 Kriya Yoga Express from Ranchi at 9.40 p.m.. For Dhoni, a former South Eastern Railway employee, it was yesterday once more as he had last travelled in a train 13 years back. “We all got on the train from Ranchi and he insisted since the boys are together we should do this,” Singh said. He also informed that Dhoni was awake till 2 a.m., talking about his initial days in the game and chronicling many a tale which he encountered during his career. Since the last time Dhoni took a train, the Ranchi wicketkeeperbatsman captained India to two World Cup titles, bagged a Champions Trophy, shepherded the side to No. 1 ranking in Tests and became one of the best finishers.

2012 at home — winning 17 Test matches and having drawn three. Now, with Australia set to begin the challenging tour, captain Kohli said that India need to focus on their game and not be worried about the form and combination of the visiting Australian side. “Every match, every series is challenging. All the teams we played are good quality teams and Australia is not different. We don’t rate anyone,” Kohli said at a conference.

of Steven Smith Smith, Peter Handscomb, Shawn Marsh and Mitchell Marsh, looks solid. The visitors came with four spinners — Nathan Lyon, Steve O’Keefe, Ashton Agar and Mitchell Swepson — pacers Mitchell Starc and Jose Hazlewood.

India pip SA in women’s World Cup qualifier final COLOMBO: Riding on all-rounder Harmanpreet Kaur’s late-order heroics with the willow, India pipped South Africa by one wicket in a nail-biting Women’s cricket World Cup qualifier final at the P. Sara Oval here. Chasing a decent 245, India were on course with opener Mona Meshram (59) and Deepti Sharma (71) striking a 124-run second wicket stand to set the tone before Harmanpreet’s run-aball unbeaten 41 runs helped the side recover from a mini-collapse and get over the line. While Meshram’s 82-ball knock was laced with seven boundaries and a six, Deepti consumed 89 balls and hit eight fours in her innings. —IANS

DMK offensive on AIADMK

While Stalin, who is the Leader of Oppositions in the assembly, led a day-long hunger strike in Tiruchirapalli, around 350 km from here, other leaders are protested in various districts

s a part of its multipronged attack on Chief Minister K.Palaniswami’s government and to protest events inside Tamil Nadu assembly on February 18, the DMK under the leadership of Working President M. K. Stalin held a daylong hunger strike across the state. While Stalin led the hunger strike in Tiruchirapalli, around 350 km from here, other leaders are protested in various districts. Meanwhile, the Madras High Court declined to pass any interim order to put on hold or annul the trust vote won by Palaniswami in the assembly and adjourned the case filed by Stalin for February 27. The court also ordered submission of the video footage of the happenings in the Tamil Nadu assembly on February 18 — the day Palaniswami sought and won the trust vote by securing 122 votes and 11 against. Stalin, who is also the Leader of Opposition in the assembly, had filed a plea to seek annulment of the trust vote. In his petition, he also sought the court’s directions to assembly Speaker P. Dhanapal to hold the trust vote

with a secret ballot under a monitoring committee comprising the Governor’s Secretary, Chief Secretary and a senior official from the Election Commission. On February 18, the DMK and other opposition parties demanded secret ballot or adjournment of the assembly session by a week after Palaniswami moved the confidence

motion. Dhanapal refused to accept the demand. DMK members then sat in protest inside the assembly and were later evicted by marshals. The DMK gave a letter intimating the party’s decision to bring a no confidence motion against Dhanapal. Meanwhile Stalin said he would be meeting the President Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday

and brief him about the incidents that happened inside the assembly on February 18. Countering the multiple forum attack of DMK, the ruling AIADMK countered that the opposition is trying to topple a democratically elected government. Speaking to reporters here, AIADMK spokesperson Panruti S

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu's major opposition party DMK announced its decision to move a no confidence motion against assembly Speaker P. Dhanapal. Speaking to reporters here, DMK's Working President M.K. Stalin said a letter to this effect was given to the Assembly Secretary. A copy of the letter was also given to Dhanapal, he added. According to Stalin, who is also Leader of Opposition in the state assembly, Dhanapal acted with hidden agenda in the assembly on February 18. On that day, Chief Minister K. Palaniswami had moved a confidence motion to prove his majority in the House and the opposition had demanded secret ballot or adjournment of the session for a week.

Ramachandran defended the Speaker’s action of evicting the DMK members from the assembly on February 18, accusing the opposition party of trying to destabilize the government and the party.

TN CM begins innings Sasikala seeks better facilities in jail with welfare schemes IANS, BENGALURU

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami on his first day in office announced a string of welfare schemes which were part of AIADMK’s poll promise. The new Chief Minister ordered implementation of subsidized twowheeler scheme for working women, housing scheme for fishermen, doubling of unemployment allowance and closure of 500 liquor shops. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami comfortably won the vote of confidence in the state assembly, with the proceedings marred by pandemonium that saw the opposition DMK evicted by the Speaker, and the Congress too walked out. Speaking to the media, Palaniswami said in order to enable working women to commute freely to office, the party had announced subsidized two-wheeler for 100,000 women per year. As per the ‘Amma Two-Wheeler Scheme’, the government would subsidize 50 per cent of the cost of a two-wheeler, subject to a maxi-

mum of Rs 20,000. According to him, the scheme would cost Rs 200 crore per year. Palaniswami also ordered increase in financial assistance to pregnant women from Rs 12,000 to Rs 18,000 to benefit around 600,000 pregnant women at an outlay of Rs 360 crore per annum. He increased the monthly allowance to unemployed persons. The additional outgo for this will be Rs 31 crore per year.

IADMK General Secretary V.K. Sasikala has come to terms with prison life but hopes to get better facilities in view of her age and weak health, a party leader said. “Chinamma (Sasikala) is fine though weak. Her sugar level and BP (blood pressure) are normal. She is adjusting to the prison life. She has applied for better facilities. We hope she gets them,” the AIADMK’s Karnataka unit Secretary V. Pugazhendi told IANS. The 59-year-old returned to the Central Jail on the city’s southern outskirts a week ago to serve a fouryear sentence upheld by the Supreme Court after she was held guilty of corruption in a twodecade-old wealth case. A trial court had first held her guilty in September 2014 in Bengaluru. “Does she have a choice but serve the jail term as ordered by the Supreme Court?” asked Pugazhendi. “As Sasikala had spent three weeks along with Amma (J. Jayalalithaa) in the same jail over two years ago (September-October 2014), she is familiar with the harsh conditions in

the women’s cell,” she added. Sasikala and her co-convict sisterin-law Elavarasi and nephew V.K. Sudhakaran returned to the jail after the Supreme Court refused to give her more time. “We are hoping the authorities will consider her request for better amenities like a cot, mattress, table fan and attached bathroom so that she can take care of her health till she gets transferred to the Central Jail in Chennai,” said Pugazhendi. Admitting that there was legal provision for a convict to seek transfer to another jail, Karnataka Director General of Prisons H.L. Satyanarayana Rao told IANS that the

jail superintendent could consider such a request on health or humanitarian grounds. “We can consider at our discretion if a request is made by the convict and the application is within the process of law,” Rao said. Asked about Sasikala’s first week in prison, Rao said there was no change in the rules for her and she was being treated like other women inmates as per the jail manual. “No special treatment or privileges are given to Sasikala or Elavarasi. They both are in adjacent cells. Relatives or guests are allowed to meet only twice a week between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.,” Rao said.

P

ulsar Sunil, the main accused in the shocking incident of kidnapping of a popular Malayalam actress, was arrested after six days, the state police said. Kerala Police chief Loknath Behra told the media that Sunil and an accomplice have been taken into custody but refused to provide the details. “I will not make any comment on that,” said Behra, referring to reports that the two men were nabbed from a court. “I have said earlier also that investigation is not a magic wand. Sometimes, it takes time to get the accused and we did our best and now we have them,” he said. The Malayalam actress was abducted on February 17 while traveling from Thrissur to Kochi by road in her car. She was dumped near the house of director-turned-actor Lal, who, upon hearing her harrowing experience,

Malayalam film actress Bhavana who was abducted on February 17.

informed the police. This led to the arrest of her driver Martin. The actress told the police that Pulsar Sunil kidnapped her at the behest of others. Sunil, who has contacts with several people in the industry, including a popular actor, reportedly told the actress that he had been hired to kidnap

her and if she resisted, he would have to use force. Political leaders and members of the film fraternity have widely condemned the incident, which has raked up questions of what would be the fate of ordinary people if this was the plight of a celebrity. The state BJP spokesperson

Dhanush to reunite with ‘Kodi’ director IANS, CHENNAI

A

ctor-filmmaker Dhanush has said that he will reunite with his Kodi director Durai Senthil Kumar for another project. “Yes. After blockbuster Kodi, Durai Senthil Kumar is writing his next for me. Too early to disclose further details. Thank you,” Dhanush tweeted. In last year released Kodi, a

political thriller, Dhanush played dual roles. With already two projects in his kitty, this yet-untitled project is expected to go on the floors later this year. Dhanush is currently busy wrapping up his maiden directorial Tamil venture Power Paandi, in which he also plays a cameo. He’s also on the verge of completing shooting for Tamil action romantic Enai Nokki Paayum Thota.

CHENNAI: After the abduction of the actress, Veterans and industry colleagues reacted on the incident. Actor-singer Prithviraj wrote on Facebook: “Woke up to the horrifying news that has by now been reported, misreported and seminationalized.” Actor Dulquer wrote on Facebook, “Wishing that the Kerala Police catches “these spineless cowards”, requesting all “our boys and men, young and old to be alert and vigilant” as “it’s equally our responsibility to care about, respect and protect our women”. Actor-turned-CPI-M legislator Mukesh said the driver was his driver for a while. But he never knew that he had a criminal mind. Mega actress Manju Warrier wrote on her Facebook page that she, along with a few others, was with the actress.

M.S. Kumar had earlier told reporters that the prime accused was helped by state police to give the slip. “This happened on the national highway with the knowledge of the Home Department and hence, the combing operations did not take place properly. This helped the accused to escape,” the BJP spokesperson had said. Speaking to media in Kozhikode, state Minister for Cultural Affairs A.K. Balan earlier had said that no stone would be left unturned in the probe. “The probe will also look into the conspiracy angle besides who is behind this gang. Many told me when I took the cinema portfolio that I would find it tough, but I will clean it up,” Balan had said. His statement came soon after actor-turned-politician and former Cinema Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar said in the Malayalam film industry there is a practice of “relying on goons to establish oneself”.

Jayam Ravi to be trained in horse riding, sword fighting CHENNAI: Actor Jayam Ravi will begin work on Rs 150 crore Tamil historic drama Sanghamitra later this year. He says that the project will require him to learn horse riding and sword fighting. “This film is going to involve a lot of hard work, and it will require me to train in horse riding and sword fighting. I’ve lost a lot of weight for Vanamagan’as I was required to look very lean. I need to gain all that weight and add a few more

kilos to look like a warrior in Sanghamitra”, Ravi told IANS. To be helmed by Sundar C, the project will also star Arya and Shruti Haasan. Actor Jayam Ravi Having recently completed shooting for Vanamagan, in which he plays a tribal character, Ravi has started shooting for “Tik Tik Tik”, Tamil cinema’s first space thriller.

Shruti Haasan resumes ‘Kanavu Variyam’ will inspire people: Arun ‘Katamarayudu’ shoot IANS, CHENNAI

CHENNAI: Actress Shruti Haasan has said that she has returned to the sets of Pawan Kalyan-starrer upcoming Telugu actioner Katamarayudu after a brief hiatus. “Hello Hyderabad! Back for the shoot of Katamarayudu and looking forward to some super duper work today,” Shruti tweeted. The project marks her reunion with Pawan Kalyan after five years. The duo had previously worked together in 2012 Telugu actioner Gabbar Singh. Katamarayudu is a remake of Tamil

film Veeram, and is being directed by Kishore Kumar Pardasani. The film also stars Tarun Arora, Chaitanya Krishna, Siva Balaji and Kamal Kamaraju, among others. Produced by North Star Entertainment, the film’s music is composed by Anup Rubens. The film is set to hit the theatres on March 29.

D

ebutant director Arun Chidambaram says his two Remi Award-winning Tamil drama Kanavu Variyam, is a simple film which will inspire the dreamer in all of us. In 2016, the film had its world premiere at 49th WorldFest Houston International Film Festival where it won two Remi Awards. “This is a story sans twists and turns. It’s a simple film which will inspire the dreamer in us. It will encourage people to chase their dreams and do what they love. It also has romance and comedy but

the core idea will inspire people,” Arun told IANS. Arun himself plays the lead

alongside Jiya Shankar, Illavarasu and Senthil Kumar. The film revolves around power cuts and electricity deficit in the villages of Tamil Nadu. “It’s a film that will make you fall in love with science, and kids will realize that science can be so much fun. Just because it’s an award-winning film, it doesn’t mean it will be very slow and is targeted at a section of audience. It’s a commercial film that’s equally uplifting,” he said. While Arun is happy with all the international acclaim his film has received, he says that the true victory lies in the way audiences accept it in cinemas.

B

ollywood actress Esha Gupta, who essays an interesting character in the forthcoming actionthriller Commando 2: The Black Money Trail, believes that women have the power to be vulnerable and strong at the same time. Asked about the projection of Indian women as strong in Hindi cinema, Esha told IANS here: “I think vulnerability is the strength of a woman. A woman is as strong as to give birth of a child and nurture. A man cannot do that. Just because we women are expressive and show our softer side with love and affection, does not mean we are not strong.”

Sonu Sood gets nostalgic

S

onu Sood, last seen in Jackie Chan-starrer Kung Fu Yoga, went down memory lane over the first train pass he had made when he started his journey as an actor in the city. “Found my train pass that I made when I came to Mumbai for the first time and started my journey as an actor. How time flies,” Sonu tweeted. Along with the tweet, he also shared the image of the train pass. It was a first class pass between Borivali and Churchgate. On the career front, Sonu is gearing up to produce a biopic next. It will be based on a person from social welfare sector.

Shahid Kapoor’s ‘best birthday ever’

B

ollywood actor Shahid Kapoor, who will turn 36 on February 25, had a pre-birthday party here with wife Mira and a host of his friends from Bollywood. He had the “best” time, he says. “#bestbirthdayever,” Shahid posted on Instagram, with an image featuring him with wife Mira, who was dressed in an Anita Dongre creation for the special occasion. The party saw Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, Karan Johar, Sonakshi Sinha, Vishal Bhardwaj, Sidharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt, Katrina Kaif, Farah Khan, Sajid Nadiadwala, R. Balki, Gauri Shinde, and Varun Dhawan and others in attendance.

Dry days are absurd: Pooja Bedi

A

ctress Pooja Bedi wonders why voting days are dry days. She finds it absurd. “Firstly they raise drinking age to 25. Then they make voting dry days. Does government think Indian citizens are hooligans and irresponsible? Dry days are absurd because it only hits the economy. People who want to drink will sit at home and drink anyway,” Pooja tweeted this week. “Funniest is dry day on counting and results! I’d say keep the counters sober... But now it’s all electronic. And voting machines don’t drink. “I simply don’t get this attitude of important and celebratory days being dry days. World over they keep ‘specials’ and ‘happy hours’,” she added.

Roshan Sr. praises wife’s hearty gesture

Pinky Roshan donated Rs 10 lakh for the surgery to be performed on Egyptian woman Eman Ahmed Abdelaty SUBHASH K. JHA, MUMBAI

F

ilmmaker Rakesh Roshan says his wife Pinky donated Rs 10 lakh for the bariatric surgery to be performed on 36-year-old Egyptian woman Eman Ahmed Abdelaty, very quietly, and he is proud of her for it. “I was not aware of this (the Rs 10 lakh donation). My wife Pinky did it on her own. I got to know of what she had done when journalists began inquiring about it. I was

I’m completely fine: Farida Jalal MUMBAI: Veteran actress Farida Jalal says she is hale and hearty — killing a death hoax in her name. “I am hale and hearty,” Farida said in a statement, following the rumors that went viral on social networking sites. The 67-year-old actress wonders why people spread such rumors. “I don’t know from where these baseless rumors are coming from. Initially I laughed, but... My phones have been constantly ringing and everybody is asking the same question. It’s a bit irritating, I wonder why people spread such rumors,” she added. The actress will next play Kashmiri woman in Imran Khan’s upcoming film Sargoshiyan.

BMC polls: B-Town celebrities cast vote MUMBAI: From veterans like Rekha and Gulzar to young talent like Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma, Bollywood celebrities voted in the civic polls here in the hope that Mumbai will get good infrastructure and waste management. The celebrities were enthusiastic about voting. B-Town stars proudly flaunted their inked fingers on social media platforms and urged others to vote too. Bollywood celebs like Zoya Akhtar, Shraddha Kapoor, Subhash Ghai, John Abraham, Paresh Rawal, Varun Dhawan, Kailash Kher, Shruti Seth, Kiran Rao voted too. Behl said: “Trying to vote for an hour and it’s a bloody mess. BMC elections, pathetic job. Finally left without voting. Disgrace.” —IANS

as surprised as anyone else. I called up Pinky and she confirmed the news,” Rakesh said. Rakesh, who has been married to Pinky for 46 years, is filled with pride at his wife’s gesture. “That she gave the money to help that distressed girl is fine. But what really touched me is that Pinky did it so quietly, without letting anyone know about. Not even me. The gesture was leaked from the hospital and that’s how the media got to know about it,” he added.

The 36-year-old Egyptian woman Eman Ahmed Abdelaty.

So does Rakesh feel that it’s the duty of the privileged to help the needy? “I can’t comment on what others do or don’t do. But yes, if it is with-

in our means, we always like to come forward in any way possible to help in a genuine cause.” “My wife Pinky, my daughter Sunaina and my son Hrithik are always there to support genuine charitable causes.” Hrithik added: “It’s not nice to speak about small gestures. If some of us have the means to assuage others’ pain, why not? I wonder

why people only help others when something impacts them personally. Having means to help, and then not coming forward to help, is a sign of an insecure soul.” Eman reached Mumbai earlier this month — thereby stepping out of her home first time in over 25 years. Considered the heaviest living human in the world, she is here for weight loss.

‘Jolly LLB 3’ confirmed, says makers IANS, MUMBAI

‘Jolly...’ marks 100 crore in India

T

he makers of the Jolly LLB franchise confirmed that there will be a third instalment of their film. At a success party of the recently released Jolly LLB 2, the makers were asked if they are planning to roll out another movie in the courtroom drama franchise. Fox Star Studios CEO Vijay Singh said: “I think that’s a very easy question. Yes... there will definitely be a Jolly LLB 3.” While the first Jolly LLB film featured Arshad Warsi in the lead role, the second movie features Akshay Kumar as a lawyer who takes on a complicated court case against an expert and ruthless advocate. The producers chose Akshay for the second instalment,

and Arshad had commented that it was done as the makers wanted a “bigger star”. Akshay, who is happy with the film’s success, said: “I don’t know whether it will be with me or without me, but I am happy to hear that.” Director Subhash Kapoor

MUMBAI: Actor Akshay Kumar’s courtroom drama film Jolly LLB 2, which is being loved by the audience for its satirical take on the judicial system in the country, has collected Rs 100.37 crore at the domestic box office. We are thrilled and humbled with the response that Jolly LLB 2 has got from audiences. This is Fox Star Studios’ 100 crore hat-trick after M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil,” Vijay Singh, CEO, Fox

said: “Being the lead, Akshay has taken the film to such a high level.” To that, Akshay said: “Saurabh Shukla, Annu Kapoor,

Star Studios, said in a statement. “The success of Jolly LLB 2 shows the strength of the franchise that is being helmed by Akshay Kumar who has constantly chosen roles that he has made his own and has always reinvented himself for audiences to shower so much love on him. “We are thankful to director Subhash Kapoor for his brilliant script which reinforces that audiences will embrace good content always,” Singh added. —IANS

bigger mystery than the sinking of the submarine during the 1971 India and Pakistan war that this film so bravely recreates, is Rana Daggubati’s one single immovable expression that he has been holding steadfast on his impressive face ever since he graced the large screen with his imposing physical presence on the screen.

It’s an expression of scowling machismo, a ratification of masculinity and a rejection of all humbug, and that includes changing the expression according to the

emotional need of the moment. Rana plays Lieutenant Commander Arjun Varma. And if you think this is as a filmy as a hero’s name can get, wait till you see the

torrent of patriotic jingoism that hits you straight in the face (though alas, not in the guts). The national anthem (which had already played before the film begins, as per the new rules) played in the film before the end when all the characters first sang “Saare jahaan se achcha” and then just to drive in the point, “Jana gana mana”. Confused, a few members of the audience got to its feet while the others remained seated. Even before the confusion could be sorted, the national anthem played again, this time as part of the background score, and then the film ended in a flurry with the tricolor held high.

BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi has renewed his call for a full investigation by the House Oversight Committee into Gen. Flynn and the Trump Administration’s interactions with the Russian government. Seven days have passed since Gen. Flynn resigned due to revelations of his unauthorized discussions of US sanctions against Russia with the Russian ambassador. Gen. Flynn has still not testified under oath. Rep. Krishnamoorthi issued his statement in response to ongoing reports that President Trump’s personal lawyer delivered a plan to eliminate sanctions on Russia to the office of Gen. Flynn while Flynn served as National Security Advisor. The plan, which was authored by a Ukrainian supporter of Vladimir Putin, was reportedly offered with the encouragement of Putin aides. “I am renewing my call for a full investigation by the House Oversight Committee into Gen. Flynn and the Trump Administration’s ties to the Russian government as we continue to learn more about the extent of their dealings,” Rep. Krishnamoorthi said. “Yesterday we learned that the President’s personal attorney delivered to Gen. Flynn’s office a plan to eliminate our sanctions against Russia only a week before Gen. Flynn’s resignation. “Our current sanctions on Russia were instituted in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and its cyber attacks on the United States. This plan to eliminate sanctions is reported to have been proposed by a Putin ally with the encouragement of the Kremlin. “We are facing fundamental questions of national security, and they demand a full investigation immediately.”

Lufthansa leaves Indian in the lurch

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO -- Indian American Lina Sampat was dancing with joy when she, along with her parents, left home on January 23 to fly to Mumbai via Frankfurt with confirmed tickets of Lufthansa for attending her grandfather’s 90th birthday. But little did the young company executive realise then that she was in for a harrowing experience. The trio was to first fly from Chicago to Frankfurt and then by another flight to Mumbai the next day. But thanks to the lackadaisical attitude of the largest German airline, Sampat was left in the lurch at Frankfurt while her parents had to leave for Mumbai with a heavy heart. “We travel to India every year by business class and frequently also to other countries but for the first time, I suffered extreme frustration and disappointment because of the Lufthansa staff ’s indifference that also cost me $9,654.68”, the gutsy woman told Hi India. According to Sampat, a loan officer in a Chicago-based reputed firm, ‘untrained’ German-speaking officials of the airline, said to be the largest even in Europe, did not know even their own rules because of which she was humiliated and made to run from pillar to post at the Frankfurt airport. She said that the Lufthansa staff did not allow her to board the flight to Mumbai over alleged discrepancies in her documents, did not stir a finger to help her and even refused to use their phones, adding that the ‘shameless’ airline staffers were instead laughing in their sleeves as her sobbing parents bade goodbye to her before boarding

the Mumbai-bound plane. Sampat claimed that Indian embassy and airline office in Chicago had checked and okayed her two passports and e-visa but the Lufthansa staff at Frankfurt did not give her a patient hearing and ruled that she would not be allowed to fly to Mumbai. “To make matters worse, one of the Lufthansa staff grabbed my ticket and scratched out the bar that scans me on to the flight before even listening to what was going on. Members of the staff were extremely rude and began cancelling all three of our tickets till I requested them not to cancel my parents’ tickets”, complained Sampat. She had to return to Chicago but Lufthansa office which was aware of her plight did not bother to offer an apology or refund for what was their inefficiency. Sampat has demanded reimbursement of $9,654.68 she spent for resolution of her grievance. Is Lufthansa listening?

Seema Verma blasts healthcare system

BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC -A m e r i c a’s h e a l t h c a r e system is frustrating and is becoming more and more expensive, dashing people’s hopes of getting the medical services they need. This has been stated by Seema Verma, who has been nominated by President Donald Trump for a key health position. The Indian American nominee told members of the powerful Senate Finance Committee during her confirmation hearing on February 19 that she was ‘deeply concerned’ by the all-round failure of the US healthcare system. “I am deeply concerned about our healthcare system. There is frustration all around,” said Verma, who has been nominated for the position of Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. If confirmed by the Senate, she is

likely to be a key figure in the Trump Administration for the President’s plan of repealing the Affordable Care Act.

Appearing before the committee, Verma said she was “extremely humbled” to be nominated by the President. “It is a testament to the fact that the American Dream is very much alive for those willing to work for it.” Verma said it was her passion to continue to work on the frontlines of healthcare, changing and improving this country’s healthcare delivery system. “Doctors are increasingly frustrated by a number of costly and time-consuming burdens, and quite frankly, many Americans are not getting the care that they need. We have a long way to go in improving health outcomes,” she told lawmakers. “Healthcare continues to grow more and more expensive and the American people are tired of partisan politics. They just want their healthcare system fixed,” she said in her testimony, adding that she understands what is at stake. Verma shared her own personal experience with the senators.

Crackdown soon on immigrants BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC -- The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) appears poised to institute stricter policies towards undocumented immigrants residing in and hoping to enter the US. According to McClatchy, DHS Secretary John Kelly has reportedly drafted two memos which outline the proposed guidelines for agency heads. One of them, posted online by the news outlet, states, “The Department no longer will exempt classes or categories of removable aliens from potential enforcement.” As such, Kelly says, “I have directed ICE to hire 10,000 officers and agents expeditiously, and to take enforcement actions consistent with available resources.” He goes on to add that removals should be prioritized, in his words, “to maximize the benefit to public safety, to stem unlawful migration and to prevent fraud and misrepresentation.” According to Kelly, such issues include those related to criminal offenses, willful misrepresentation, and the abuse of public benefits programs, among others; however,

Nirmal Narvekar

BY A STAFF WRITER AMBRIDGE, MA- The new head of Harvard University’s endowment, Indian American Nirmal Narvekar, intends to make changes to the fund by outsourcing most of its assets and lay off about half the staff. Narvekar, who started his new role of endowment head in December, intends to slash half of the Harvard Management Co.’s 230-person staff and shift most of its money to outside managers. By the middle of the year, the company will shut down its internal hedge funds and let go traders. Narvekar, tasked to turn around the $35.7-billion fund, has proven that outsourcing could work, as he did with a 20-person staff at Columbia recently, outperforming Harvard in the process . The endowment’s budget provides more than a third of the university’s operating budget and contributes to the costs of student financial aid, research and professor salaries. Narvekar, who spent the past 14 years at Columbia, is Harvard’s fourth endowment head in a decade. The remaining staffers on Harvard’s team will focus on the university’s overall portfolio instead of specific asset classes. The staffers’ salaries are expected to be directly tied into the endowment’s performance beginning in 2018, according to the report.

Indian student dies in hit-and-run mishap BY A STAFF WRITER AINESVILLE, FL -- An Indianorigin student at the University of Florida was killed after being hit by a car near a bus stop in Gainesville, Fla., on February 11. Karan Khullar, 22, was killed after a car allegedly driven by Damaris Guerrero Garcia, 23, drove off the road, over a curb and hit him as well as two other pedestrians. The two others injured were Khullar’s friends. Garcia failed to stop following the accident but was tracked down 20 minutes later driving southbound on Interstate 75 by the Florida Highway Patrol after witnesses spotted the damaged car and reported it to authorities. Garcia consented to a breathalyzer test, blowing at a 0.14 blood alcohol level, nearly two times the legal limit of 0.08. She was

and hit the trio at the bus stop outside of the Campus Club Apartments in the 4000 block of Southwest 37th Boulevard. Khullar was thrown several feet from the impact of the crash. He was rushed to UF Shands hospital but later succumbed to his injuries. Garcia, who is being held at a Marion County jail, faces charges of driving under the influence, manslaughter, DUI with injury and leaving the scene of a crash involving death. Originally from Jammu, Khullar attended Army High School in Ratnuchak and later earned a degree from Jaypee University of Information Technology. He has had several internships as a student at business such as Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., JUIT Youth Club, and being a part of USG Economic and Financial Affairs at JUIT MUN.

BY A STAFF WRITER RONX, NY -- The city has accused a Bronx landlord of creating illegal apartments and allowing his building to become a breeding ground for rats. The building, where three people within its one-block radius contracted rare rat-borne disease leptospirosis, is owned by Ved Parkash. One of them has since died. According to Braulio Flories, who also contracted the disase, he lived in one of the illegal basement apartments on Grand Concourse. Officials said the building’s basement had been illegally converted into eight units, which were vacated on February 14. Parkash reportedly sent two exterminators to the building to begin addressing the rat problem. “When we came here, we saw substantial evidence of rodent infestation,” said city Health Commissioner Mary Travis Bassett. Last April, 38 tenants at 750 Grand Concourse filed lawsuits against Parkash for failing to remedy a plethora of building code violations.

Woman seeks help to find missing son

BY A STAFF WRITER UEENS, NY -- A mother is frantically trying to locate her 15-year-old son, who has been missing for more than a week. Kitty Azhar, a Queens teacher and activist, says she last saw her son, Skye Azhar, when he went to bed at their home at 75-65 Utopia Parkway in Fresh Meadows on January 30. When she went to go wake him up the next morning, he was gone, she said. Initially, she thought that Skye, a 10thgrader at the Veritas Academy in Flushing, went to school early. But it turned out that he never arrived at school, and he has not been seen since. Azhar, who filed a missing person’s report with the 107th Precinct and posted numerous messages on local Facebook pages, said that Skye left his cellphone in his room and deleted all the information on it. “He wasn’t doing well at school recently,” the mother said, wondering whether that could have led Skye to run away. Azhar also said that while the teen had never previously run away from home, he

Indian restaurants join pro-immigrants stir BY A STAFF WRITER AN FRANCISCO, CA -- San Francisco Bay Area-based restaurants Rasa and Saffron Indian Bistro, owned by Indian American businessman Ajay Walia, were among many immigrant-run companies nationwide that closed their doors on February 16 as part of a grassroots “A Day Without Immigrants” protest. Walia’s two Bay Area restaurants--San Carlos-based Saffron India Bistro and Burlingame-based Michelin-starred Rasa Contemporary Cuisine--were among at least 12 restaurants in the area to take part in the protest that was coordinated mainly through social media and word of mouth. The protest was a way of showing President Donald Trump, whose efforts to crack down on legal and illegal immigrants sparked the move, what the country would be like to live without immigrants. Many immigrants skipped out on work and school and refrained from spending money as a way to demonstrate their impact on the country’s economy and culture. Other Bay Area businesses, as well as companies nationwide, closed their doors as a pledge to stand in solidarity with their immigrant employees and customers. Walia said, “At the end of the day, we’re all immigrants. There is no America without immigrants.” By closing the restaurants, Walia said that he had to cancel nearly 100 reservations at Rasa alone. The strike comes in the wake of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement conducting raids, which led to hundreds of people being detained for deportation proceedings. Trump has pressed the accelerator on immigration, vowing increased efforts of deportations as well as punishing sanctuary cities that protect undocumented immigrants. Other “A Day Without Immigrants” protests were held in Philadelphia, Washington, Boston, Houston, Chicago and New York, among others. Organizers expect thousands of people to participate or show solidarity with workers.

Former store owner faces 20-year jail BY A STAFF WRITER ALCKSHEAR, FL -- The former owner of a Blackshear, Fla., convenience store, Suresh “Sonny” Patel, pleaded guilty in federal court last month to defrauding the federal food stamp program. Patel, 49, entered his plea on January 27 before Chief US District Judge Lisa Godbey Wood to a single count of wire fraud of roughly $143,000. The Indian American store owner admitted he let customers use their electronics benefits transfer (EBT) cards to buy cigarettes, gas, alcohol and other unauthorized goods at his G&S Food Mart and that he had given customers 50 cents on the dollar for illegal cash redemptions. Patel could face up to 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine and three years on probation and could be ordered to make

Researchers uncover how Chocolates may harm your intestine Zika causes microcephaly IANS, NEW YORK

NEW YORK: Researchers have uncovered the mechanisms that the Zika virus uses to cause foetus microcephaly, a brain development disorder. Babies with microcephaly can have a wide array of problems, including a small brain and head, developmental delays, seizures, vision and hearing loss and feeding difficulty. While a Zika infection typically results in mild or symptom-free infections in healthy adults and children, the risk of microcephaly in the developing foetus is an alarming consequence that has created a worldwide health threat.

C

Since a normal brain develops from simple cells called stem cells that are able to develop into any one of various kinds of cells, the research team deduced that microcephaly is most likely linked with abnormal function of these cells.

hronic exposure to a common food additive found in everything from chocolates, chewing gum to bread can decrease the ability of small intestine cells to absorb nutrients and act as a barrier to pathogens, warns a study. Ingestion of the compound, known as titanium dioxide, is nearly unavoidable. It can enter the digestive system through toothpastes, as titanium dioxide is used to create abrasion needed for cleaning. The oxide is also used in some chocolates to give it a smooth texture. “Titanium oxide is a common food additive and people have been

eating a lot of it for a long time — don’t worry, it won’t kill you! — but we were interested in some of the subtle effects, and we think people should know about them,” said one of the authors of the study, Gretchen Mahler, Assistant Professor at Binghamton University, State

orried about your kid’s ever increasing waistline? Blame your level of obesity, as according to a new study, kids are nearly 35-40 per cent likely to inherit the body mass index (BMI) — how fat or thin they are — from their parents. The findings showed that for children who are in the heavy obese category, the proportion rises to 5560 per cent, suggesting that more than half of their tendency towards obesity is determined by genetics and family environment. Conversely, the ‘parental effect’ was found to be the lowest for the thinnest child, as opposed to being the highest for the most obese child.

For the study, published in the journal Economics and Human Biology, the team used data on the heights and weights of 100,000 children and their parents spanning six countries worldwide: the Britain, US, China, Indonesia, Spain and Mexico. Children of obese parents are more likely to be obese themselves when they grow. For the study, the researchers exposed a small intestinal cell culture model to the physiological equivalent of a meal’s worth of titanium oxide nanoparticles — 30 nanometers across — over four hours (acute exposure), or three meal’s worth over five days. Enzyme functions were negatively affected, while inflammation signals increased, the study said.

Zero pollution may spike asthma in kids TORONTO: In a shocking revelation, Canadian researchers have found that children with access to clean drinking water may be at an increased risk of developing asthma in childhood than those who do not. ave you seen the pictures of the iconic Eiffel Tower on the Champ de Mars in Paris? A large ethereal photograph of the 19th century architectural marvel welcomes one to “La Vie A Paris,” an exhibition of photographs by Rupin Thomas. The photograph of Eiffel Tower, like most others on display, brings a different perspective to the much known tourist site. While most photographs of the Eiffel Tower focus on the abun-

dance of its architectural motives and span vertically upwards to create a full, life-size emporium, Rupin Thomas has struck the chords just right in his horizontal portrait that barely captures onefourth of the tower but brings alive the lively cacophony of the park seen right through the tower. This iconic picture grabs one’s attention, brings a different narrative to the much popular tourist destination and more than anything else it casts some sort of a spell on the visitors, compelling them to step inside and discover

nlike other forms of caregiving, mothers singing to their babies is a universal behavior, and new research shows that the act could be mutually beneficial for both the mother and the child. While the songs provide the babies much-needed sensory stimulation that can focus their attention, the act of singing can help mothers bond with their babies and also fight postpartum depression, the study said. Mothers experience a much-

needed distraction from the negative emotions and thoughts associated with depression, while also feeling empowered as a parent. The study, published in the

Journal of Music Therapy, also explored the acoustic parameters in the singing voices of mothers with post-partum depression. “The extraction and analysis of vocal data revealed that mothers with post-partum depression may lack sensitivity and emotional expression in their singing,” said study author Shannon de l’Etoile, Professor of Music Therapy at University of Miami Frost School of Music in the US. “Although the infants were still engaged during the interaction, the tempo did not change and was somewhat robotic,” de l’Etoile said.
