Vyapam: Party backs Chouhan As Central Bureau of Investigation takes on Vyapam probe, several BJP leaders come out in support of Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Chouhan; CBI takes stock of the case from state SIT
Vyapam whistle-blower seeks security withdrawal
IANS, BHOPAL
I
n the wake of ongoing controversy related to Vyapam scam, the entire Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) appears to have united behind Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, publicly defending him. Union Minister for Steel and Fertilizer Narender Singh Tomar said just after observing some discrepancies in Vyapam, Chouhan ordered investigation, which the Special Task Force under the Special Investigation Team carried forward. He said it was Chouhan who appealed to the Supreme Court to direct the Central Bureau of Investigation to probe the scam. BJP’s state president Nandkumar Singh in Sagar alleged that it was Congress party which attempted several times to derail the process of the ongoing SIT probe and took the matter to the Supreme Court. Yet, Congress leader Digvijaya Singh was disappointed there. BJP’ national vice president Prabhat Jha in Gwalior, party’s national
1993 Mumbai blasts convict Yakub Memon to hang on July 30
NAGPUR: Yakub Memon, convicted for his role in the March 12, 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts, will be hanged on July 30, official sources said here early Wednesday. He is likely to be hanged in the Nagpur Central Jail, where he is currently lodged, following the rejection of his mercy plea in April this year by the president, said the official who declined to be identified. A chartered accountant, Memon, 53, has filed his second review petition before the Supreme Court which is expected to be heard July 21, but the state government is making all preparations for the hanging with the warrant issued earlier this week. He was awarded the death sentence by a Special TADA Court in Mumbai on July 27, 2007 for his role in the blasts, including arranging finances for carrying out the 13 serial explosions across the city on March 12, 1993.
Shivraj Chouhan had appealed the apex court to direct the CBI to probe the case.
vice president Shyam Jaju in Ujjain, senior BJP leader and central minister Prakash Javadekar in Indore and other leaders also defended Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan before media. Meanwhile, the CBI team probing the Vyapam scam met officials of the SIT and the Special Task Force (STF) on July 14 and dis-
cussed the probe and the deaths related to the scandal. A 40-member CBI team reached Bhopal on July 13 following the Supreme Court’s order to take over the investigation from the Special Investigation Team of the state police. The STF and police teams handed over many documents to the central agency, sources said.
GAWALIOR: Vyapam whistle-blower Aashish Chaturvedi on July 14 said he has decided to return the security provided by the district administration, and has given an application for this to Superintendent of Police Harinarayan Chari Mishra. The policemen assigned for his security were not ready to accompany him on a bicycle and he did not have enough money to pay for their autorickshaw fare, said Chaturvedi, the Gawalior resident who exposed the Vyapam scam and pedals around the city on his bicycle. It was after many attacks on him in the wake of revelations in the Vyapam scam that the administration provided him with security. Talking to the media on Tuesday, Chaturvedi claimed that 70 securitymen have been changed in his security detail in the last one year.
India clears Rs.290bn defense purchases IANS, NEW DELHI
I
ndia has cleared defense purchases worth over Rs.290 billion ($4.5 billion) at a meeting of the Defense Acquisition Council (DAC). The DAC, chaired by Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar, approved a deviation in offset clause for acquiring four Boeing P8I maritime surveillance aircraft. The proposal is worth Rs.43.80 billion and comes as seven of eight of these surveillance aircraft have been inducted in the Indian Navy. The original eight-aircraft deal was signed in 2009. The navy in November last year decided to go in for the option clause in the contract under which it can order four more.
Also approved was a Rs.169 billion proposal for replacing the 1960s vintage L70 and ZU 23 antiaircraft guns. Official sources said 428 guns will be acquired under the ‘buy and make in India’ clause of the Defense
Procurement Procedure (DPP). Other proposals cleared include upgradation of the weapons and sensor systems of six ships of Talwar class for Rs.29 billion. The update will be in the air defense missile, and surface to air missile systems.
He said he was in Delhi till Monday and while his lone security personnel remained confined to a room, he went around the national capital all by himself. Chaturvedi said he feared he could be murdered and the incident would be passed off as an accident. He, however, said he did not know who might be hatching such a plan. Superintendent of Police Harinarayan Chari Mishra confirmed receiving the application and said Chaturvedi’s grievances would be redressed and his security ensured. The scam in the Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board or Vyapam - short for Vyavsayik Pariksha Mandal - pertains to admission to professional colleges as well as recruitments to various posts in the state. More than 40 people related to the scam have so far died, either under mysterious circumstances.
Coal case: Madhu Koda to be charged with criminal conspiracy NEW DELHI: A court has ordered that former Jharkhand chief minister Madhu Koda and eight others be charged with crimi- Madhu Koda nal conspiracy and cheating in a coal block allocation case. The charges will be formally framed on July 31. The court found prima facie evidence against Koda and others in the case allegedly involving Vini Iron and Steel Udyog Ltd. (VISUL). The judge ordered framing of charges against the nine accused, including Koda.
Simhastha Kumbh Mela starts in Nashik QUAID NAJMI, NASHIK
T
he Simhastha Kumbh Mela opened on July 14 amid piety and colorful celebrations in Nashik and Trimbakeshwar in Maharashtra, with over 25,000 pilgrims arriving for the inaugural holy bath in the Godavari river. The inaugural was marked by prayers, blowing of ‘shankhanad’ (conch shell), showering of flower
petals and traditional flag hoisting at both venues. Security was tight. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis unfurled the flag at Ramkund in Nashik while union Home Minister Rajnath Singh did so at Kushavarat in Trimbakeshwar, both on the banks of the Godavari, around 45 km apart. “Kumbh Mela is a symbol of world peace and prosperity. So, let us together make this Kumbh Mela
a grand success and let it be known as ‘Harit Kumbh’ (Green Kumbh),” Fadnavis said, adding that he prayed for good rains in the state and farm-
ers’ prosperity. Throwing open the festival in Trimbakeshwar, Rajnath Singh conveyed his “good wishes to all pilgrims in the Kumbh Mela”.

Modi’s bandwagon hits Vyapam roadblock Vyapam may prove to be worse than any other scam as it is — with 40 deaths reported in its connection so far — is unlike any other scandal seen in recent years AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
T
he Vyapam controversy has the potential of being as damaging, if not more, as the scams which sank the Congress. The reason why it may prove to be worse than, say, the spectrum scam is that Vyapam is unlike any other scandal seen in recent years. While most of them related to malfeasance, the recruitment for government jobs and admission to educational institutions via the tests conducted by the Vyavsayik Pariksha Mandal (whose acronym is Vyapam) in Madhya Pradesh have been marked by a seemingly unending series of deaths. There is patently something eerie and sinister about these demises, including the death of the Madhya Pradesh governor’s son, which impart a spooky aura to the scandal. It is this unset-
tling atmosphere which has made union minister Uma Bharati say that she fears for her life. In spite of being the target of headlines like “40 deaths and counting”, the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government made the situation difficult for itself by resisting the calls for entrusting the
There is something eerie and sinister about these demises, which impart a spooky aura to the scandal, unlike any other probe into the deaths to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) till the mounting pressure left him with no alternative but to request the high court to ask the CBI. But his retreat came too late. The Supreme Court had by then taken the matter into its own hands and asked the CBI to investigate the scam. As a result, there is little scope of repairing the damage done to Chouhan’s reputation and also to
that of his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and even Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Curiously, it is Modi’s refusal to speak on the various scams involving union ministers like Sushma Swaraj and state governments run by the BJP in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh which has drawn comparisons between Narendra Modi and his predecessor, Manmohan Singh, who was also known for being tight-lipped. It may not amount to overstating the case to say that the present scene bears more than a passing resemblance to the atmosphere of public despair which prevailed in the twilight years of the last government. The Modi government, too, is currently grappling, somewhat ineffectually, with the Sushma Swaraj-Vasundhara Raje-Lalit Modi affair and is now expected to face a backlash in parliament and outside from the Vyapam imbroglio. Used as Modi was to ruling with an iron hand in Gujarat, he is seemingly unprepared to deal with a situation when it is threatening to spin out of control. Now, to recover his poise, he has to act tough.
BRICS countries to maintain upward trend despite difficulties WANG SHANG, BEIJING
D
espite recent difficulties, BRICS, a bloc that groups some of the world’s largest emerging markets, still has enormous potential and will maintain the upward trend that it has enjoyed over the past decade. As the BRICS countries — Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa — are facing temporary difficulties in their economies, voices from those who have rooted for the failure of the bloc from the beginning are becoming louder and even sound plausible. But those people are wrong. Some of them are short sighted, unable to recognize the enormous potential of BRICS behind the current problems. The others, however, harbour ulterior motives and are not glad to see a unity of emerging markets grow stronger, which they believe is a threat to their dominance of the global economy.
Facts speak louder than words. Statistics and facts nowadays have proven that the bloc as a whole is still the powerhouse of today’s world growth despite economic difficulties facing its member states. The five countries have contributed about 50 percent of global growth over the last decade. And trade among them in 2013 totalled $350 billion, making up about half
of the world’s total. Blessed with relatively complete infrastructure and stable society, the BRICS countries are still the forerunners of the emerging markets. Their economies may falter for a time against the backdrop of a sluggish global economy, but certainly will not fall at all. More importantly, closer cooperation within BRICS can unleash even greater potential, as the five coun-
tries share a common ground for many major interests and their economies are complementary to each other. The BRICS countries, which are located in four different continents and are vastly different from each other in geology, demography and culture, each have their comparative advantages. Strengthening cooperation within the bloc will help each
country to make better use of those advantages. The just concluded BRICS summit in the southwestern Russian city of Ufa is scheduled to chart a course for future collaboration as well as to discuss the establishment of another financial tool, the BRICS Contingent Reserve Arrangement, which shows the world BRICS’ endeavours to improve their economies. The difficulties for the bloc are true. But as Chinese President Xi Jinping said at the Ufa summit: “The more difficulties we face, the more confidence we must have.” He also noted that any progress is not made along a straight line, but with twists and turns. The BRICS countries enjoy abundant natural and human resources, vast domestic markets, huge development potential, and plenty of policy space, so the upward trend of BRICS will not change, Xi said. Indian firms invest $15 bn in US Around 100 Indian companies employ people across 35 states, says a new report
MINTING MONEY
ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON
I
ndia-based companies have invested over $15 billion across the US, creating an estimated 91,000 jobs, according to a new report released by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Grant Thornton (GT). New Jersey, California, Texas, Illinois and New York are home to the most Americans directly employed by Indian companies, according to the report, “Indian Roots, American Soil” released here on July 14 at an event on the Capitol Hill. Texas, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, New York, and New Jersey have the highest foreign direct investment (FDI) from Indian companies, says the report which for the first time provides a state-by-state breakdown of tangible investments made by Indian firms. The event highlighting the contributions of Indian companies to the U.S. economy was attended by several members of the US Congress and a delegation of CII member-company CEOs from India.
New Jersey, California, Texas, Illinois and NY are home to the most Americans directly employed by Indian companies.
“Today Indian companies are not just investing and creating jobs, they have also become significant stakeholders in the growth and prosperity of their local communities,” said Indian Ambassador Arun. K. Singh. “The CII study draws attention to the growing contribution and influence of the Indian industry,
which forms an important component of our growing and vibrant relationship with the United States,” he said. “As India surges forward to become the fourth fastest growing source of FDI into the US, it is critical that we recognize the positive impact of Indian business investments in the country,” said
Senator Mark Warner, Democratic co-chair of Senate India Caucus. “I believe that growing the economic partnership between India and the US will benefit both economies,” said Ami Bera, the only Indian American currently serving in Congress and co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans.
l Together, 100 Indian companies employ more than 91,000 people across 35 states and the Washington DC, the American capital. l The total value of tangible investments made by these 100 companies exceeds $15.3 billion. l The top five states in which Indian companies have generated maximum employment are: New Jersey (9,278 jobs), California (8,937 jobs), Texas (6,230 jobs), Illinois (4,779 jobs) and New York (4,134 jobs). l The top five states in which Indian companies have contributed the highest foreign direct investment are: Texas ($3.84 billion), Pennsylvania ($3.56 billion), Minnesota ($1.8 billion), New York ($1.01 billion) and New Jersey ($1 billion). l The average amount of investment received from Indian companies per state is $443 million.
Obama critic filmmaker faces counselling Bobby Jindal denounces IANS, WASHINGTON
A
New York Judge has ordered Dinesh D’Souza, an Indian-American conservative scribe and Obama critic filmmaker, to do community service for four more years for breaking campaign-finance laws and undergo further counselling. Judge Richard Berman clarified on July 13 that under the sentence he handed down after D’Souza pleaded guilty last year, he has to do eight hours each week for the entire five years he’s on probation and not just the eight months he was confined to a halfway house.
Filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza
The Manhattan federal court judge also read aloud a report from a court-appointed psychologist who called D’Souza “arro-
gant” and “intolerant of others’ feelings,” according to the New York Post. “In my mind it was never contemplated that the eight hours only applied to the period of home confinement,” Berman was quoted as telling defense attorney Ben Brafman. He later read out a report from a psychologist who saw D’Souza, the maker of the anti-Obama film 2016: Obama’s America, and then ordered him to continue attending weekly sessions, the Post said. “The client tends to deny problems and isn’t very introspective,” the psychiatrist wrote.
US committed to strong partnership with India WASHINGTON: Declaring that America’s deepening friendship with India is an indispensable part of US Asia rebalance strategy, US Vice President Joe Biden (in picture) has reiterated Washington’s commitment to take the India-US partnership still higher. “US-India partnership has reached a new level” under President Barack Obama, he said on July 13 in keynote speech on the future of the US-India partnership to mark the tenth anniversary of the landmark India-US
civil nuclear deal.
The nuclear deal “removed the single largest irritant in the relationship between the two greatest democracies,” he said on the conclusion of a conference hosted by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). “Together we transformed the bilateral relationship into a global partnership based on shared values, interests, responsibilities,” he said.
nuclear deal with Iran ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON
L
ouisiana’s Indian-American governor Bobby Jindal has joined other 2016 Republican presidential contenders in decrying the historic nuclear deal with Iran saying it doesn’t go far enough. Jindal, who joined his rivals in an interview with PBS, gave three reasons for his opposition. First, Iran will be allowed to hold onto “thousands of centrifuges,” which Jindal said will allow the country to maintain uranium enrichment capacity. Second, Iranian leaders aren’t going to be required to sever ties with militant anti-Israel groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah, he said. Third, inspectors won’t be allowed free rein to inspect nuclear sites, even though Jindal said President Barack Obama “said we will get anywhere, anytime inspections.” “I worry under this president’s deal we could end up with a nuclear arms race in the Middle East,” Jindal said. Jindal hoped that Democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary “Clinton, who’s been the architect of this president’s foreign policy will come out and oppose this deal and say it is time for America to stand

with Israel.” “There is still time for America to come out and say we will not allow Iran to become a nuclear power.” Asked about his insistence on people to stop using “hyphenated” terms such as Indian-Americans, Jindal returned to familiar rhetoric about how he thinks immigrants should embrace US values and learn English. “The great thing about America is, we’re a wonderful melting pot,” he said. “Folks can be proud of their heritage. But I think the hyphenations, the divisions are keeping us apart,” he said.

Sunita to fly to ISS as NASA crew Indian American Sunita Williams is among four astronauts selected by NASA for commercial flights to ISS IANS, WASHINGTON
I
ndian American Sunita Williams is among four astronauts who have been selected by NASA for commercial flights to the International Space Station (ISS) from U.S. soil. They will work closely with company-led teams to understand their designs and operations as they finalize their Boeing CST-100 and SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft and
operational strategies. Williams, Robert Behnken, Eric Boe and Douglas Hurley will be trained for commercial spaceflights that will return American launches to U.S. soil and further open up low-Earth orbit transportation to the private sector, the U.S. space agency said. “These distinguished, veteran astronauts are blazing a new trail that will one day land them in the history books and Americans on the surface of Mars,” said NASA admin-

istrator Charles Bolden. Williams, a US Navy captain, received her commission in the Navy in May 1987 and became a helicopter pilot, logging more than 3,000 flight hours in more than 30 different aircraft. NASA chose Williams for the astronaut program in 1998. She spent a total of 322 days in space and currently holds the record for total cumulative spacewalk time by
a female astronaut (50 hours and 40 minutes). She now ranks sixth on the alltime U.S. endurance list and second all-time for a female astronaut. “Their selection allows NASA to move forward with the training necessary to deliver on President Barack Obama’s ambitious plan for returning the launch of the U.S. astronauts to US soil,” said John Holdren,
Indian-American girl impresses India highest recipient of US Obamas with ‘unique’ burger economic assistance: USAID IANS, NEW YORK
A
nine-year-old Indian American girl left the Obamas awestruck when she served a ‘garam masala’ Quinoa Burger with ‘raita’ to them — and won a chance to dine with the First Lady at the White House. Hailing from Schaumburg, Illinois, Shreya Patel was among 55 young cooks who were given a red carpet welcome at the White House during the fourth annual “Kids’ State Dinner” recently. The competition was to create a recipe for a healthy lunch, the Chicago Tribune reported.
NRI kingpin of tax phone scam gets 15 years jail WASHINGTON: The Indian-American ringleader of a massive call center fraud scam that collected more than $1 million by impersonating FBI and tax department officials has been sentenced to nearly 15 years in jail. Besides 175 months in prison, Sahil Patel, who organized the U.S. side of the extortion ring run out of call centers in India, was also ordered to forfeit $1 million, and sentenced to three years of supervised release, the Attorney’s office announced. Patel whose scam operation bilked $1.2 million out of U.S. taxpayers, pleaded guilty in January.

he U.S. provided $65.1 billion as economic assistance to India between 1946 and 2012, according to the US Agency for International Development (USAID) statistics. It was the highest among the economic assistance provided to 200 countries and regions by the US during the period. The data, which was inflation adjusted, shows India received $65.1 billion in economic assistance, followed closely by Israel, which got $65 billion.
Pakistan, which received a total of $44.4 billion from the U.S., was among the top five countries of the total 200 nations and regions getting the economic assistance.

he US Department of Education is dismissing a claim that Harvard shows bias against Asian-American applicants because a similar lawsuit has already been filed in federal court. Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights reportedly told Bloomberg Business that it’s dismissing the claim without evaluating its merit, because of a similar lawsuit filed in federal district court in Boston in November. In May, a coalition of more than 60 organizations filed a complaint with the federal government, alleging that Harvard holds Asian-
Americans to higher standards than other ethnic groups, according to On Campus, a public radio initiative produced in Boston. They also complained the uni-
versity uses racial quotas lumping all Asian-Americans — Indian, Chinese, Pakistani — into a single, broad category, and asked the federal government to investigate.

Long sitting raises cancer risk in women NEW YORK: Spending more leisure time sitting is linked with 10 percent higher risk of cancer, including breast and ovarian cancers in women, says a study led by an Indian-origin researcher. “The higher risk was present even after taking into account body mass index (BMI), physical activity, and other factors,” said the study led by Alpa Patel from American Cancer Society. “Longer leisure-time spent sitting was associated with a higher risk of total cancer risk in women, and specifically with multiple myeloma, breast and ovarian cancers,” the study said. Few studies have examined the link between sitting time and the risk of specific cancers. The association was not apparent in men.

Iran closes nuclear deal
Sanctions on Iran to go as it gives up n-program after the historic deal IANS, VIENNA/WASHINGTON
I
ran and six world powers on July 14 thrashed out a historic agreement that curbs Tehran’s nuclear program in exchange for lifting over a decade-long economic sanctions. The comprehensive agreement was clinched between Iran and P5+1 — Britain, China, France, Russia and the US plus Germany — after torturous talks in the Austrian capital. Under the deal, Iran would ship most of its nuclear stockpile to Russia, blocking the technical path to a nuclear bomb, Xinhua qouted a source as saying. The deal would specify that the related UN resolutions on economic and financial sanctions against Iran will be terminated all at once under a UN resolution and in an agreed framework, Iranian media reported. The deal’s text, which runs into around 100 pages,

specifies key areas of the Iranian nuclear issue, including nuclear technology cooperation, capping its nuclear capacity and draft of UN Security Council resolution. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu slammed the development. “The deal is a bad mistake of historic proportions,” Xinhua
quoted him as saying. “When you are willing to have an agreement at any price, this is the result... In all fields, in which they (P5+1) were supposed to prevent Iran from arming itself with nuclear weapons, far-reaching concessions were made,” Netanyahu said. The deal is a high point of US
President Barack Obama’s foreign policy. “Today, after two years of negotiation, the US together with the international community has achieved something that decades of animosity has not: a comprehensive long-term deal with Iran that will prevent it from obtaining a nuclear weapon,” Obama said from the White House. “Every pathway to a nuclear weapon is cut off,” CNN quoted Obama as saying. He said the deal provides for extensive inspections. “This deal is not built on trust. It is built on verification.” Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif described the deal as “a historic moment”. But he added: “We are reaching an agreement that is not perfect for anybody but it is what we could accomplish and it is an important achievement for all of us.” Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said the deal “shows constructive engagement works”.
India stands to gain from Iran deal: US WASHINGTON: India, which has drastically reduced its oil imports from Iran under US pressure, stands to gain from the historic accord reached between Tehran and six world powers to limit its nuclear program in return for lifting sanctions. But before India, which imports 70 percent of its oil supply, turns back on the taps of Iranian oil, President Barack Obama has to sell the deal to a hostile Republican Congress that has 60 days to review it. Obama has vowed to veto any legislation that may scuttle what he described as “a comprehensive, long-term deal that will verifiably prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon”. Obama said he would “welcome a robust debate in Congress on the details of this deal” even as he warned that “I will veto any legislation that prevents the successful implementation of this deal.” “Because of this deal, Iran will not be able to produce highly enriched uranium or weaponsgrade plutonium, the raw materials necessary to build a bomb.”

on-and-off talks, a long-anticipated Iranian nuclear deal has finally come into shape.” “Yet this is not a time to celebrate as Iran and the international community should get ready for even tougher tasks to ensure the hard-earned agreement will not die halfway,” said the commentary. “If the deal could be effectively and loyally implemented, it could go down into the human history as an exceptionally successful example of solving one of the world’s thorniest issues by peaceful and diplomatic means,” it added.
A
s Iran and six world powers led by the US reached a historic accord to curb Tehran’s nuclear program, President Barack Obama vowed to fight for it in a hostile Republican-controlled Congress. “This deal is not built on trust,” he said. “It is built on verification,” Obama said from the East Room of the White House. Asserting that the agreement would deny Tehran a pathway to nuclear weapons and require international inspections for compliance, Obama also vowed to veto any congressional attempt to scuttle the agreement.

G WASHINGTON: After completing the historic fly-by of Pluto, NASA’s New Horizons probe has successfully beamed a pre-programed “phone call” — a 15-minute series of status messages — to mission scientists on Earth. US President Barack Obama congratulated the NASA team for this historic feat on Twitter. “Pluto just had its first visitor! Speaking to the media before his return here, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras hailed the outcome, stressing that now scenarios of an imminent Greek default and Grexit were things of the past. The path to restore growth in the debt-laden country was paved with creditors’ further aid over the next three years. ($91-95 billion) through the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) would be difficult to implement. But the alternative for Greece was a dive into chaos, stressed the
government, and that a bad deal was better than no deal. According to the official euro summit statement released in Brussels at the end of the marathon 17-
hour talks, Greece must legislate starting as of July 14 sets of harsh measures and reforms as prerequisites to the release of any aid. The first round of legislation, which should be passed by the Greek assembly by July 15, includes the streamlining of the VAT system and measures to improve the sustainability of the pension system. The Greek government is due to table the agreement and the first draft bills containing these policies to the Greek parliament on July 13 night. Meanwhile, a new Eurogroup meeting was expected to discuss the issue of short-term financing so that Greece can cover its financing obligations in July and August.

eeting formally for the first time after a year, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif on July 10 agreed to cooperate to eliminate terrorism and expedite the trial of those accused in the 2008 Mumbai massacre. The breakthrough meeting, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) which New Delhi and Islamabad joined as full members on July 10, drew praise from Indian strategic experts and criticism not only from the opposition but also BJP ally, the Shiv Sena. Modi and Sharif, who arrived here on July 9, met informally at a dinner hosted by Russian President Vladimir Putin on July 9 night. Both leaders had exchanged pleasantries, setting the stage for Friday’s dialogue. But the two leaders steered clear of the contentious Kashmir issue during the hour-long talks, informed sources said.

Both leaders condemned terrorism in all its forms and agreed to cooperate with each other to eliminate this menace from South Asia.” It said Modi had agreed to visit Pakistan for the 2016 SAARC Summit. They agreed that their National Security Advisors would meet in New Delhi to discuss issues connected to terrorism.
DUSHANBE (TAJIKISTAN): India and Tajikistan on July 13 agreed to intensify cooperation in combating terrorism and extremism as well as in defense and connectivity as Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the final stop of his Central Asian tour and asserted that India must reconnect with the region. Modi, who held talks with President Emomali Rahmon at the Qasr-e-Millat (Palace of Nations), also assured India’s support to Tajikistan in the field of agriculture. Both sides inked agreements on culture and human resource development. Speaking on terrorism, Modi said both nations were “located in the proximity of the main source of terrorism. Modi said he proposed that both sides should explore multiple options, including the land-sea route through Iran, for transporting the gas. The $10 billion TAPI project is expected to bring Turkmen natural gas from its giant Dauletabad and Galkynysh gas fields to Pakistan and India. The project is likely to take off in December. The joint statement said the TAPI project “forms a key pillar of economic engagement between the two countries” and its implementation will have “a transformational impact on trade between the two countries”.

‘Masaan’ shows true nature of Benaras: Richa ‘Masaan’, which won two FIPRESCI Awards at Cannes, is now making its promotional progress in India. The film will hit the screens on July 24
A
ctress Richa Chadha, who plays the main protagonist in the internationally-lauded emotional drama Masaan, says the film “shows the true nature of Benaras.” “Masaan doesn’t show any new avatar of Benaras. It shows the real, true nature of Benaras. We just surrendered ourselves to this city and then it actually accepted us.” said Richa during a promotional event. Masaan, which won two FIPRESCI Awards at Cannes earlier in May, is currently making its promotional progress in India, and Richa says she wants the film to be “well-received and appreciated” in the country. “We want our internationally award winning film to be well-received and appreciated in India and I want everyone to watch this movie. It is a very good and positive film,” said the 26year-old. Though Masaan will hit Indian screens only on July 24, a Cannes-cut version of the movie was screened at the sixth edition of Jagran Film Festival in New Delhi earlier this month, and elicited a positive response. The film’s story revolves around four lives which intersect along the Ganges: a lowcaste boy falling hopelessly in love, a daughter ridden with guilt of a sexual encounter ending in a tragedy, a hapless father with fading morality, and a spirited child yearning for a family, long to escape the moral constructs of a small-town.

O
n par with any big ticket Hollywood caper, director S.S. Rajamouli’s BahubaliThe Beginning is visually monumental, spectacular and colossal. It should not be mistaken for a story from the Jain scriptures. A fiction drafted by V. Vijayendra Prasad and narrated in a melo-
dramatic manner with surreal fantasy, songs and epic battle scenes, it is a tale of a prince who is unaware of his identity. The film begins with a brief geographical layout of the kingdoms of Maheshmati and Kunthala and that of Singapuram’s Bandits. And, with picturesque high waterfalls as
the backdrop, the tale begins dramatically with a woman, carrying an infant in her arms and an arrow piercing her back, fleeing from her tormentors. After a brief fight and successfully eliminating those chasing her, the lady slips into the gushing waters of the Ganges and drowns,
but not before baptising the child with “Mahendra Bahubali ko jeena hoga”, and holding him up in one hand, above the waters, till he is rescued. The child, now raised as Shiva (Prabhas), by a foster mother Sangha, is curious about the waterfalls and the land beyond. On the technical front, the film is artistically conceived. Every frame is picture perfect with; brilliant atmospheric visuals, elaborate sets, beautiful costumes, well-perceived computer generated images and well executed video effects. The music and background score by MM Kreem add to the cinematic experience. Overall, while the film has a feel good factor, the story and its visuals are heavily inspired by Hollywood historicals. — Troy Ribeiro

But actor Rajneesh Duggall considers her a hardworking talent. “Sunny Leone is sincere and hardworking. She pays a lot of attention to detailing in scene and songs. I am working with Sunny in ‘Beiimaan Love’. It is a dark romance,” Rajneesh said here. He also condemned the ‘catfight’ involving Sunny with Rakhi and Celina. Not too long ago, Rakhi reportedly lashed out at Sunny for forcing other artists to wear skimpy clothes and even asked Sunny to leave India. Meanwhile, Celina accused Sunny and her husband of leaving her house, which they had taken on rent, in shambles. “I think everyone has their own opinion, and as a co-star, I have worked with Rakhi and I have worked with Sunny, but no one should ever say anything like that about anyone,” said Rajneesh, who has also worked with Sunny in Ek Paheli Leela.

ollywood actress Aditi Rao Hydari, who was last seen in Subhash Kapoor’s film Guddu Rangeela, says that style is an inherent thing and shouldn’t be a burden to anyone. “Style for me is more of an inherent thing. It’s something that can’t be bought. It certainly shouldn’t be a burden to anyone and it should be fun, effortless and comfortable,” Aditi told IANS. The 36-year-old, who is blessed with flawless skin, says that she uses “minimal makeup” for clear skin. “The most important thing is that I do not use a lot of make-up on my face, and I think that is what works best for me. Too much make-up clogs up your pores and prevents your skin from breathing,” she said.

USCIS Recalling and Replacing Some Three-Year DACA Permits BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL - Earlier this year, US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) incorrectly issued a few thousand Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) work permits that were valid for three years instead of two. These incorrect permits were sent to grantees after February 16, 2015 - the date of the court order blocking President Obama’s recent attempt to expand DACA. USCIS is now trying to recall these incorrect work permits and will begin visits in Chicago, Los Angeles and possibly Dallas and Houston as part of their recall effort. These actions impact approximately 150 - 200 DACA grantees in the Chicago area. Grantees who received inaccurate three-year permits after February 16, 2015, must turn in the permit at a local USCIS field office. The USCIS office in Chicago is located at 101 W. Congress. USCIS will then issue a correct two-year permit to each of these grantees if the agency has not done so already. The recall has no impact on a grantees’ job, their Social Security Number, their driver’s license, or anything else arising from their permits. The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which began in 2012, has already benefited more than 664,000 immigrant youths, protecting them from deportation and allowing them to work, study, and move forward with their lives in the United
C
States. The court order blocking expanded DACA does not impact youth who qualify for the original DACA program created in 2012. Youth who qualify should still apply, and youth whose DACA approval is expiring should apply for renewal. If grantees do not return the invalid work permits, USCIS plans to contact grantees through visits to their last known home addresses, which may cause unnecessarily concern and confusion for immigrant families. USCIS may also cancel the DACA grant and work permits of those who do not comply. The best way to avoid these measures is by returning the incorrect work permit to a USCIS office. For more information call the USCIS National Customer Service Center at 1-800375-5283 (press option 8), or ICIRR’s information line, 855-435-7693 (855-HELPMY-FAMILY). *The National Immigration Law Center is holding a Spanish language media briefing today, July 15, 2015 at 12pm to explain how these actions affect the immigrant community and the steps DACA grantees can take to preserve their work permits and immigration status. For more information call in to 800895-0231 xUSCIS.

MOTELIER FACES 5-YEAR JAIL FOR ROLE IN SEX TRAFFICKING BY A STAFF WRITER
N
EW ORLEANS, LA -- A 74-year-old Indian American motel owner, Kanu Patel, has pleaded guilty to benefiting financially from sex traffickers who beat women for prostitution in the rooms he rented out to them at inflated rates in New Orleans, Louisiana. Patel, who could face a maximum of five years in prison, ignored women’s screams for help as pimps beat them, according to court evidence. Patel pleaded guilty to one count of benefiting financially from trafficking in persons. Patel, who also went by names like ‘Kenny’ and ‘Pop’, acknowledged that in his role as the former owner of the motel, he regularly rented rooms to individuals that are charged as sex trafficking coconspirators in connection with this case. He admitted he knew they were pimps who forced and coerced women to engage in prostitution, according to evidence presented before the court. Patel admitted that although he never
personally recruited, groomed or coerced any of the victims, he benefited financially from the sex trafficking operation. Evidence has established that Patel charged the pimps and sex trafficking
co-conspirators higher rates than other motel guests and opened the motel’s gate to allow the women to bring customers back to the hotel. Patel learned that members of the sex

trafficking conspiracy physically assaulted the women, including one instance in which a co-conspirator brutally beat one woman with a large piece of wood while she screamed for help, leaving her with multiple lacerations and a broken arm. He did not report the activities of the people engaging in sex trafficking to the police as long as they paid their rent. “This defendant callously profited from a sex trafficking venture that used force, fraud and coercion to compel women to engage in commercial sex acts,” said Kenneth Allen Polite Jr., an attorney of the Eastern District of Louisiana. “These crimes often pass without detection, because victims live in fear of physical abuse, threats and other forms of coercion. Haldiram snacks not safe, says USFDA BY A STAFF WRITER
BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC -- The US Food and Drug Administration has rejected several snack imports made by Indian company Haldiram Snacks over concerns about the high levels of pesticides, mold and bacteria. The move comes as global food corporation Nestlé has been subjected to a nationwide ban in India of its Maggi noodles that allegedly tested for high levels of lead. The FDA initially found pesticides in Haldiram’s products in September 2014 and has since refused imports of the company’s products 86 times. Among the products rejected were Haldiram brand cookies, biscuits and wafers. A Haldiram spokesperson recently said that the company’s products are completely safe. He also noted that food safety standards were different in India and the US. “A pesticide that is permitted in India may not be allowed (in the US). And even if it is, they may not allow it in the same concentration as it is here,” he said. During the first five months of 2015, the FDA has reportedly rejected more snack imports from India than from any other country. The main reasons given are high pesticide levels and mold.

Signal International’s $20-million deal with Indian guest workers BY A STAFF WRITER LABAMA -- Signal International has reached a $20-million settlement agreement with Indian guest workers who won a federal labor trafficking lawsuit against the company earlier this year The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) has also announced that the mobile-based company will also issue an apology to guest workers who sued in Texas and Louisiana. The agreement, if approved by US Bankruptcy Court, would resolve the 11 lawsuits still facing the company, which has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Those lawsuits represent more than 200 workers with the same claims as those of the workers in the successful SPLC lawsuit tried earlier this year. During the trial, workers say they were treated unfairly by the company, being forced into involuntary servitude and living under guard in an overcrowded, unsanitary labor camp in Pascagoula. The workers claimed they paid fees of more than $10,000 to Signal recruiters, who coordinated the hiring of about 500 welders
WHEF provided a platform to Hindu businesses and Individuals for knowhow and funds management. The Forum also works towards awareness in technology and financial activities of the world. Swamiji announced that more than 2,000 participants and 600 delegates were expected to attend the WHEF at London. WHEF also has in mind the economic growth and its relevance to Hindu community and a catastrophic recession in the recent past which left world economy in turmoil for a while. WHEF, through its conference, will boost the participation of youth, include them in education, leadership, politics, human rights, media and women empowerment. Swami ji said that WHEF was open to all and had a bigger role to play in the coming years in shaping the world economy. The organizing committee members who were present at the media meet included Nirav Patel, Shyamak Sheth, Sohan Joshi and Vandana Jhingan.

and pipefitters in 2005, when the company faced a shortage of skilled labor after Hurricane Katrina. In February, a federal jury in New Orleans awarded $14 million in damages to five Indian guest workers represented by the SPLC. The case was the first of the dozen lawsuits against Signal to go to trial, according to the SPLC, and together the suits comprised one of the largest labor trafficking cases in US history. Another case was set to go to trial this
month. The other lawsuits facing Signal International and its agents were filed after a judge did not grant class action status in the SPLC case, which would have allowed the suit to benefit most of Signal’s guest workers. The SPLC coordinated a legal collaboration that brought together nearly a dozen law firms and civil rights organizations to represent, on a pro bono basis, workers excluded from the original SPLC suit.

T
he interior of your home plays a crucial role in its serenity. By simply making a few changes in your home, you can definitely live peacefully and with more happiness, says an expert. Prasad Kulkarni, CEO, MahaVastu, Mumbai, suggests how:
Avoid placing the dressing table on the southern wall in the southwest zone as then it will increase expectations from your spouse, which may create problems
WIND CHIMES: The common decorative items in most homes can be placed in north, northwest and west Vastu zones. In the north, you can place a wind chime made up of five rods. This will attract new opportunities in your career. A seven-rod wind chime in the west brings overall gains for you. LOCATION OF DRESSING TABLE: Placement of your dressing table in the right direction can help in improving your relationships. It should be kept adjacent to your bedroom, but avoid placing it
on the southern wall in the southwest zone because then it will increase expectations from your spouse, which will create problems in the relationship. Ideally, placement of the dressing table should

But the researchers said more research is needed to determine the reasons behind the link between eye color and alcohol dependence. “These are complex disorders,” said Dawei Li, assistant professor of microbiology and molecular genetics at University of Vermont. “There are many genes, and there are many environmental triggers,” Li added. The study appeared in the American Journal of Medical Genetics: Neuropsychiatric Genetics (Part B).
PAIR OF WHITE HORSES: You can place a sculpture of a pair of white horses in the northwest zone of your home. It will facilitate financial support, like a bank loan, for you.

NEW YORK : People with blue eyes have a greater chance of becoming alcoholics, says a study. “This suggests an intriguing possibility — that eye color can be useful in the clinic for alcohol dependence diagnosis,” said lead researcher Arvis Sulovari, a doctoral student in cellular, molecular and biological sciences at University of Vermont in the US. The results of the research suggest the hope of finding the roots of not only alcoholism, but also many other psychiatric illnesses. The authors found that primarily European Americans with light-colored eyes — including green, grey and brown in the centre — had a higher incidence of alcohol dependency than those with dark brown eyes, with the strongest tendency among
place it in the northeast Vastu zone of your house. According to the directions of alchemy in Mahavastu, north-east zone is responsible for your connectivity with yourself. When you place a symbol of spiri-
o your last Facebook post, on which you worked so much — giving smart twists to make it funny and awesome — did not garner any likes? Well, the fault may not be with the content but with timings, says a study. In all probability you posted that update at the wrong time. So when is the best time to post on Facebook? On weekdays during working hours, and then again between 7pm and 8pm, suggests the study, Bustle.com reported. On the weekends there’s a major drop-off in reactions. Hence, if you are really feeling yourself on Friday evening, wait to post that photo on until Monday afternoon. “The probability that an audience member reacts to a message may depend on several factors, such as his daily and weekly behavior patterns, his location or timezone, and the volume of other messages com-
peting for his attention,” said researchers from Lithium Technologies in San Francisco, who conducted the study. The US cities of San Francisco and New York exhibit similar shapes, where reactions peak at the beginning of work hours, the study said. For Paris, the reactions peak in the second half of working hours, while for London most reactions are expected towards the end of working hours. “This is important for businesses which are trying to connect with consumers in different
areas, or if your new social media crush lives halfway across the globe,” the researchers said. Also, if you want immediate gratification, Twitter might be the way to go. The study found that it sees bigger peaks in usage.

FUTURE OF IPL AT STAKE? CSK, Rajasthan Royals suspended for two years, Meiyappan, Kundra for life by SC-appointed committee in the betting scandal
LONDON: It was a moment of glory for Indian tennis fans at Wimbledon as Indian tennis stars took home three doubles titles, an unprecedented feat. Leander Paes and Sania Mirza won the crowns for mixed doubles and women’s doubles respectively in the company of Swiss Miss Martina Hingis while Delhiite Sumit Nagal took the silverware in the boys’ category.
IANS, NEW DELHI
C
hennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals were on July 14 suspended from the Indian Premier League (IPL) for two years by the Supreme Courtappointed Justice Lodha Committee in the spot fixing and betting scandal that rocked the cash-rich Twenty20 tournament in 2013. Former CSK team official Gurunath Meiyappan and Royals co-owner Raj Kundra, both of whom were earlier found guilty of betting, were suspended for life from any cricketing activity undertaken by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The guilty duo were also suspended from any cricket related activity for a maximum period of five years. “His (Meiyappan) habit of regularly placing bets in IPL matches renders the argument of his being first offender and unblemished antecedents in previous IPL tourna-

ments of no worth. That he suffered loss of `6 million in bets shows that he engaged himself in heavy bets. It is his bad luck that he did not make money out of these bets,” Justice Lodha said at a press briefing. “Any agony suffered by him because of media coverage or any hardship that may have been caused to him is too small in comparison to the huge injury he caused to the reputation and image of the game, IPL and BCCI,” Justice Lodha said. “If the reputation, image and spir-
it of the sport are lost, what remains? Being 40 years of age, he is not young but middle-aged. It is difficult to accept that he has passion for the game. Any person who has true passion for the game would not be involved in betting.” Meiyappan is the son-in-law of former BCCI president and current International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman N. Srinivasan. When approached by media channels, Srinivasan said: “Don’t want to speak on this issue.”
Sumit Nagal - From obscurity to Wimbledon champ! Delhi boy Sumit Nagal on July 13 etched his name in the history books by winning the Wimbledon boys’ doubles title with Vietnam’s Ly Hoang Nam at the famous All England Club. The right-handed tennis player scripted history when he and Ly, seeded eighth, defeated American-Japanese fourth seeds Reilly Opelka and Akira Santillan 7-6(4), 6-4 in the final in an hour and three minutes on No.1 Court. Sumit had also entered the boys’ singles competition. However, he was ousted from the first round. ‘Still learning tennis from Hingis’ Indian tennis legend Leander Paes says despite winning the Wimbledon mixed doubles title at the ripe age of 42, he continues to be a keen student

representatives of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Cricket South Africa (CSA) and Cricket Australia (CA) took the decision unanimously. The discontinuation of
the league was the most appropriate decision due to the tournament’s limited public following, maintained the council.
We gave it our all: Sania After clinching her maiden Wimbledon women’s doubles title, Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza said she and her partner Martina Hingis gave it their all on the court even when they were down in the topsy-turvy encounter. Sania and Martina overcame a tough challenge from Russians Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina in the final. “For a match like this, the No.1 and No.2 seeds playing, it was the best match you could have asked for in the tournament,” she said.
India whitewash Zimbabwe, clinch last ODI by 83 runs IANS, HARARE
NEW DELHI: After only six editions, the Governing Council of the Champions League Twenty20 (CLT20) on July 15 decided to discontinue the unpopular competition with immediate effect. The council, comprising
of the game and has learnt a lot playing alongside his mixed doubles partner Martina Hingis. Seeded seventh, Paes and Hingis joined hands to thrash the AustrianHungarian fifth seeded pair of Alexander Peya and Timea Babos 6-1, 6-1 in only 40 minutes in the final at the Centre Court here on Sunday. It was Paes’s 16th Major trophy. “In tennis, Martina Navratilova and Martina Hingis are right at the top. Hingis probably has the best groundstrokes or return of serves I have ever seen. I still learn from her,” Paes was said. “They’re both the two greatest female athletes on the planet that we have had in any sport,” he said.
power-packed performance with the willow backed up by a dominant show with the white leather enabled India to win the final One-Day International (ODI) against Zimbabwe by 83 runs and to whitewash the hosts 3-0 here on July 14. In reply to India’s 276/5, Zimbabwe managed to score only 193 in 42.4 overs. Chamu Chibhabha topscored for Zimbabwe with 82. Stuart Binny was the pick of the bowlers for the visitors, bagging 3/55. Harbhajan Singh, Mohit Sharma and Axar Patel got rid of two scalps each at the Harare Sports Club. With the ball, India kept Zimbabwe on a tight leash for the first five overs, giving away just 12 runs. The pressure paid off for the
team in blue as medium pacer Mohit sent Hamilton Masakadza packing for seven. The other opener, Chibhabha, and Regis Chakabva then got together to forge a delightful 70-run partnership studded with some well-
timed and perfectly placed boundaries. However, left-arm spinner Patel castled Chakabva for 27. After 25 overs Zimbabwe were 97/2. However, the Indians struck back again getting rid of Richmond Mutumbami and Chibahabha in
space of a few overs, courtesy Binny who kept on hurling at a tight channel in one of the turning points of the game. Earlier in the day, an unbeaten century (105 not out) by Kedar Jadhav and a flamboyant innings from debutant Manish Pandey (71) made sure that India had a challenging total of 276/5. The duo put on 144 runs after coming together at 82/4. Pandey finished with 71 off 86 deliveries, while his partner Jadhav top-scored with an unbeaten 105 off 87 balls. For Zimbabwe, Neville Madzive was the pick of the bowlers, claiming 2/59 in nine overs. The hosts picked up early , bowling a tight line and length. Indian skipper Ajinkya Rahane (15) was the first to get out, followed by his opening partner Murali Vijay (13).
