US to Pak: Fight terrorists of all hues Citizens in Pakistan and the Pakistani government has their own vested interest in trying to deal with terrorist organizations attempting to operate inside their country ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

W

hile it believes warmer relations between India and Pakistan would be in the interest of both countries, the US says it was for them to resolve issues bilaterally after the terrorist attack on an Indian Air Force base.

Washington has also “made clear with the highest levels of the government of Pakistan that it must continue to target all militant groups” — including those targeting India — without discrimination.

“Obviously the leaders of both countries are going to have to decide for themselves what they believe is in the interests of their citizens,” White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters on January 4 when asked if India should continue the peace initiative. “The United States certainly believes that

warmer relations and more cooperation between the government of India and the government of Pakistan would in the interests of both countries,” he said.

“But ultimately the leaders of

those countries will have to decide for themselves.”

Asked if the US sees Pakistan taking action against terrorist groups like Lashkar-e-Taeba as promised in a US-Pakistan joint

statement, Earnest suggested Islamabad has its own interest in fighting against terrorist groups operating inside their own country.

The US has offered its support to the Pakistani government, he said,

“particularly in light of that terrible terrorist incident where we saw an extremist organization carry out an attack against an elementary school inside of Pakistan” a little over a year ago.

That was a rather “vivid illustration” for people “that citizens in Pakistan and the Pakistani government has their own vested interest in trying to deal with terrorist organizations that are attempting to operate inside their country.”

At the State Department, again strongly condemning the terrorist attack on an IAF base airbase, spokesperson John Kirby said the US remained “committed to a strong partnership with the Indian Government to combat terrorism.”

Noting that Pakistan “also publicly and privately condemned this recent attack on the Indian airbase, he said, “we’ve been clear with the highest levels of the Government of Pakistan that it must continue to target all militant groups.”

U WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama was seen taking a car ride with comedian Jerry Seinfeld.

Seinfeld kicked off the seventh season of his web series “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” with an interview with Obama, reports aceshowbiz.com.

The show was filmed on the White House grounds because Obama wasn’t allowed to slip past security.

Seinfeld picked up the US President at his Oval Office in a classic 1963 Corvette Stingray split window coupe.

During the interview, Obama discussed about losing his anonymity.

“I would love to just be taking a walk and then I run into you. You’re sitting on a bench. And suddenly I say, ‘Hey Jerry, how ya doing?’,” Obama shared.

“That moment when you lost your

anonymity... And anonymity is not something you think about as being valuable,” he added.

Obama also revealed the scariest part of living at the White House, admitting to Seinfeld that it was a bit like “Night at the Museum”.

“So you’re looking around and thinking, what the hell is this,” he quipped.

When asked who would be the leader he would love to hang out with most, Obama mentioned Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt, who was the 26th President of US from 1901-09.

He revealed to Seinfeld that all of his underwear was one brand and one color and he has a closet like normal people.

Obama later got in the driver’s seat to take Seinfeld for a spin in the driveway of the White House.

S President Barack Obama on January 4 said that he will soon roll out gun-control initiatives, stressing that the measures will be “entirely consistent” with the constitutional right to bear arms.

Obama made the remarks at the White House with Attorney General Loretta Lynch and FBI Director James Comey. He asked his team to look for executive actions he can take to curb gun violence in the country, reports Xinhua.

Obama said although the steps will not solve every violent crime or prevent every mass shooting, it will potentially save lives and spare families the pain and extraordinary loss as a consequence of a firearm being in the hands of the wrong people.

“I’m also confident that the recommendations that are being made by my team here are ones that are entirely consistent with the Second Amendment and people’s lawful right to bear arms,” he said.

In his weekly radio address on Friday, Obama blasted Congress

for failing to act on curbing gun violence.

“We know that we can’t stop every act of violence. But what if we tried to stop even one? What if Congress did something -- anything -- to protect our kids from gun violence?” he said.

US honors Pluto’s historic flyby with stamps IANS, WASHINGTON

he US Postal Service has released a preview of its new 2016 stamps highlighting NASA’s planetary science programme, including the New Horizons’ historic 2015 flyby.

The 2016 stamp series also has eight new colorful Forever stamps of NASA images of solar system planets, a “Global Forever” stamp dedicated to the Earth’s moon as well as another postal treat for space fans - a tribute to 50 years of “Star Trek”. “It is exciting to see that planetary science and space exploration are being celebrated in

these new 2016 stamps,” said John Grunsfeld, NASA’s associate administrator for science in Washington, DC, in a statement.

“We are honored that the US Postal Service has chosen to highlight NASA’s New Horizons and 50 years of planetary exploration with these iconic images,” he added. The Pluto stamps are of special significance to NASA and the New Horizons team which placed a 29-cent 1991 “Pluto: Not Yet Explored” stamp on board the spacecraft.

On July 14, the New Horizons carried the tiny postage stamp on its history-making journey to Pluto and beyond, as members of the mission team celebrated with a large print, striking the words “not yet”.

Pathankot attack: Sharif assures action

Seven security personnel were killed in the pre-dawn attack by terrorists on the air base in Pathankot. Six suspected Pakistani terrorists were killed in the three-day long operation JAIDEEP SARIN, PATHANKOT

ive days after suspected Pakistani terrorists raided the IAF base in Pathankot, Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar has admitted to “security lapses” that led to the terror attack that left seven security personnel and all six terrorists dead.

Parrikar said the battle against the terrorists who sneaked into the sprawling base before dawn on Saturday effectively ended after around 36 hours (at 7.30 p.m. on Sunday) and that combing operations going on since then were “for safety purposes”.

“It started at 3.30 a.m. when (IAF) Garud force engaged the terrorists... At 7.30 p.m. (on Sunday), they (terrorists) were finished. So it is about 36 hours,” Parrikar said when asked how effective the counter offensive of the security forces was.

Parrikar told the media after visiting the base that combing operations were still going on but “this is only for safety purposes” and that no more terrorists were believed hidden in the Indian Air Force complex.

Some gaps led to security lapses, the minister said. He did not elaborate.

“What is worrying is how they (terrorists) entered the base.”

Why Punjab SP’s version is being suspected?

PATHANKOT: Is senior Punjab Police officer Salwinder Singh a suspect or a victim in the terrorist attack on the Pathankot air base?

The inconsistencies in the statements of Superintendent of Police Salwinder Singh, his cook Madan Gopal and his jeweller-friend Rajesh Verma, regarding the same incident have made investigators curious. This has led to the SP being put under the scanner. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has been questioning all three since Tuesday evening.

One of the discrepancies in their statements is regarding the number of terrorists. While Verma, who travelled the most distance with the terrorists, said there were four terrorists, the police officer and his cook said they were 4-5 terrorists.

Another inconsistency was about the terrorists hitting them with rifle butts. While Verma and the cook had bodily injuries, the SP had none. Also,

so far, there are some indications some of the material is made in Pakistan.

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has promised his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi that Islamabad will take “prompt and decisive action” against the terrorists linked to the attack.

Sharif, who telephoned Modi from Sri Lanka, gave the assurance after New Delhi provided “specific and actionable information” to Islamabad regarding the terrorists.

Modi underlined the need for Pakistan to take “firm and immediate action” against organizations and individuals responsible for the audacious attack.

The Sharif-Modi conversation followed the killing of all six terrorists in Pathankot, which is home to one of the biggest IAF bases.

The Pathankot Air Force Station, where a MIG-21 Bison squadron and MI-35 attack helicopters are based, is spread over 1,900 acres.

Over 1,500 families live inside the campus which also has a school, a hospital and a market.

The Pathankot attack came after Modi and Sharif met on Christmas Day in Lahore when the Indian leader, while flying home from Kabul, dramatically made a twohour halt.

In Kerala, NSG commando Lt. Col. E.K. Niranjan, killed during mopping up operations at the air base, was cremated in Elumbulsherry village in Palakkad district.

India’s northeast is considered the sixth major earthquake-prone belt in the world. In September 2011, Sikkim suffered heavy damage as a quake hit the state.

Narrative of traditional storytellers dying unsung in Kashmir SHEIKH QAYOOM, SRINAGAR

inter in Kashmir has not always been a period of bone-chilling cold and misery. It has also been the magical backdrop to the unending narrative of traditional storytellers in the past that would transport the young and the old to fairylands of princes, princesses, demons, djinns, mythical birds and wooden horses that could fly.

Both in Srinagar city and the countryside, long and dull winter nights were brought alive by storytellers who had mastered the art in such a manner that they would specially be invited for night-long sessions.

“As radio, cinema and television came to Kashmir, the demand for the storytellers died down gradually till the present times when the younger generation of Kashmiris

He would sit in the centre of a large room surrounded by his audience.

The room would be lit in village homes by an oil-lamp and in well-

to-do urban homes by a kerosene lantern since electricity was not even heard of in our childhood,” said Habibullah Dar, another resident of the same district.

Dar’s uncle called ‘Wali Maam’ was a master storyteller.

He belonged to Anantnag district. He would come to our village for a few weeks during the ‘Chillai Kalan’ (40-day long period of intense cold beginning December 21).

“The entire village would wait eagerly for his visit. After dinner, he would begin his stories that often revolved around fairylands, lovesmitten princes, demons, the mythical birds called the ‘Rooks’ which would lift a person and take him to the ‘Koh-e-Kaff’ (A far off mountain). It was an endless narrative that would be interrupted in the morning only to be resumed the next evening, Dar recalled.

“It was so participative that in between his narrative, the storyteller would ask someone in the audience to repeat the last line of the tale.

“This is perhaps what you people in today’s world call interactive audience,” Dar said as he laughed.

However long the winter night and the narrative of the storyteller, the conclusion was inescapable the triumph of good over evil.

“Storytelling in the past was not just an art to keep you amused during the dull and dark winter nights.

It was a lesson in morality in which the mighty demons and power villains would always lose to the hero who embodied love, sincerity and compassion”, Noor-ud-Din said.

While folk theater and Sufiyana music are being revived in Kashmir, it is time the art of storytelling is also preserved as the grand heritage of this land.

Britain voices ‘disappointment’

De-escalate tension, urges White House WASHINGTON: The US is concerned over the need for Saudi Arabia and Iran to de-escalate the situation in the Middle East following diplomatic tensions between the two countries, the White House said.

“We are urging all sides to show restraint and to not further inflame tensions that are on quite vivid display in the region,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said on January 4.

He added that US Secretary of State John Kerry had been in touch with his Iranian counterpart. He will also talk with his Saudi counterpart soon.

“We have seen a lot of volatility, and instability in the Middle East has a tendency to break down along sectarian lines,” Earnest said.

N Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on December 30 congratulated Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi on re-taking most of the Ramadi city from the Islamic State terror group, according to a statement issued by the UN office.

In a call with the Iraqi prime minister, Ban noted that the liberation of Ramadi was an important victory and stressed the need for measures to be taken to restore the rule of law as well as basic services in Ramadi as to allow for the return of internally displaced persons as soon as possible, said the office.

Expressing his concern over the recent abduction of a group of Qatari citizens in Iraq, including children, Ban urged al-Abadi to do everything possible to ensure their

ami Ranger, an Indian-origin person who began his life as a refugee in Delhi during Partition but is now one of the richest men in Britain, has been honored with the third highest title in the British honors.

Ranger, a philanthropist businessman, was awarded the Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the New Year’s honors list.

Ranger was born in July 1947 in Gujranwala, now in Pakistan, two months after the death of his father, Shaheed Nanak Singh of Multan. His mother took Rami

PORT-OF-SPAIN: There is uproar on both sides of the political and ethnic divide over the sacking of Jwala Rambarran, who is of Indian descent, as governor of the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago, the twin-island nation in the Caribbean.

court here on January 4 took cognizance of a defamation complaint against suspended BJP leader Kirti Azad for his alleged “defamatory” and “false” remarks against Delhibased cricketer Himmat Singh and his father Tejbir Singh.

Metropolitan Magistrate Akash Jain agreed to hear the criminal defamation complaint against Azad and posted the matter for hearing on February 22.

The court will record the statement of complainant witnesses on the next date of hearing.

The complaint was filed by Himmat Singh’s father Tejbir Singh last month against Azad and three other former cricketers including Bishan Singh Bedi, claiming that the four made baseless allegations against his son Himmat Singh, saying he was selected in a cricket tournament after giving a bribe of Rs.25 lakh.

TRS sustains Telangana sentiment, launches many initiatives

T

he first full calendar year for the newly-created state of Telangana was an eventful one as, despite teething problems, the TRS government launched many initiatives and sustained the Telangana sentiment. Notwithstanding a severe drought and a spate of farmers’ suicides, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government’s performance was creditable as it overcame electricity shortages,

launched major irrigation projects and implemented welfare schemes.

The political stability helped Hyderabad bounce back as an investment destination, indicated by the major plans unveiled by global IT giants and its emergence as an aviation and defense hub.

The government started work on its flagship projects like Mission Kakatiya aimed at restoring 46,000 irrigation tanks, Water Grid to ensure drinking water supply and two bedroom houses for poor.

However, severe drought hit agriculture production and the falling

water levels in dams and the ground water table had impact on irrigation schemes. The much-publicized Harithaharam or green Telangana programme could not take off.

Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao laid the foundation stone for major irrigation projects, including Rs.35,000 crore (over $5 billion) Palamuru lift irrigation project. KCR, as Rao is popularly known, claimed that with an annual allocation of Rs.28,000 for various welfare schemes like social security pension, Telangana is the No.1 state in the country in welfare. “The Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) is yet to detect methane gas or find the exact source of it. I don’t have an update on how much of science we have been able to find out,” Indian space agency’s former director S.K. Shivakumar told IANS at the 103rd Indian Science Congress here.

“I’ve always been fond of Ajay sir. It feels so surreal to be part of his dream project and to be playing his heroine. I play a very different character,” she said.

CHENNAI: Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani, known for blockbusters such as PK and Lage Raho Munna Bhai, is looking forward to work with Tamil actor Suriya.

“I hope I get to work with Suriya someday. He’s a fabulous actor and I’ve seen some of his impressive work,” Hirani told reporters.

Hirani spoke at the audio launch of Tamil film Irudhi Suttru, which has been made in Hindi as Saala Khadoos. Suriya attended the event as a special guest.

Hirani has co-produced the film, starring R. Madhavan, with S. Sashikanth and C.V. Kumar.

Directed by Sudha Kongara, the film also stars Ritika Singh and Mumtaz Sorcar in important roles.

According to Sudha, it was Madhavan who was instrumental in getting Hirani on board.

“It was Madhavan who took the project to Hirani when we were facing some financial issues,” she said.

SRK interested in ‘mature love story’ with Kajol

fter Dilwale, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan said he’d love to be cast with Kajol again if an interesting and mature love story comes their way.

“If there’s a nice film, if it’s interesting and different... maybe a mature love story, that would be nice. We don’t make too many of those,” Shah Rukh told IANS. “Perhaps Kajol and I... well, I could be totally presumptous about it, but we would be perhaps a good pair as we have done films together for the last 22 years. It will be interesting to be cast in a mature love story, not a yeppy or happy-go-lucky ones we’ve done before. In our stage, age and life, of whatever that we’ve seen, maybe we will be able to essay a different kind of emotion as actors,” he added.

3 Catholic schools face closure soon

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL-- The Archdiocese of Chicago will close three Catholic schools--Saint Agatha Catholic Academy, Saint Peter School and Seton Academy Transitions--at the end of the school year.

The closures are part of an “ongoing strategic planning,” according to a Chicago Archdiocese release. Archbishop Blase Cupich has accepted the recommendations.

Saint Agatha transitioned from a Pre-K through 8th grade into an early childhood program last year. The Chicago school has only 12 students currently enrolled.

Saint Peter in Antioch has had declining enrolment over the years and is operating with a deficit.

Seton Academy in South Holland has also faced declining enrolment and fiscal difficulties.

Some 82,000 students attend 230 Catholic schools within the Archdiocese of Chicago in Cook and Lake counties. It is the largest private school system in the US.

BY A STAFF WRITER ASADENA, CA-- As the Sikh float in the 127th Tournament of Roses Parade glided down the avenues of Pasadena, Calif., January 1, Sikh Americans hoped that this platform would provide an opportunity to introduce the Sikh culture and fight stereotypes attached to Sikhs all across the United States.

“In order to do that, we need to be part of the community, and the Rose Parade is a perfect opportunity for us to celebrate with fellow Americans,” said Bhajneet Singh, a spokesman and member of United Sikh Mission, in Fontana.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to be part of the legacy of the Rose Parade, which is as American as it gets.”

The float represented the community’s rich heritage for a second year and showcased the harvest festival celebrated in Punjab called Vaisakhi. It was conceived to fit into this year’s Rose Parade theme of “Find Your Adventure.”

It featured a Sikh man with full beard and a majestic turban riding on a horse to participate in competitive sports and festivities. The center of the float showed

cultural games, an ethnic bazaar, beautiful embroideries, rich foods, and the state bird, the peacock. The back of the float displayed a map of Punjab, India. Several Sikh American families rode on the float.

The float was sponsored by the Sikh advocacy group, United Sikh Mission, in collaboration with Khalsa Care Foundation and SikhLens.

“There have been a lot of hate crimes, not only against Sikhs, but also against Muslims. This particular step is not just about creating an awareness about the Sikh religion and telling our history, but also educating people that just because we look different, doesn’t mean we are dangerous,” said a San Diego-based Sikh float volunteer Harbani Kaur.

“It’s basically accepting people with different identities, different backgrounds, and different cultures as one. At the end of the day, we’re all human. We all belong to the same human race. Basically we’re all equal.”

Sikhism is the world’s fifth-largest religion and there are about 700,000 Sikhs in the US, according to the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund.

CTA passengers get trapped on elevator

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Eight people were trapped on an elevator at the 79th Street Red Line station for two hours after it suddenly stopped between floors.

Two men and six women were stuck on the now-out-of-order elevator. An eightmonth-pregnant lady was having anxiety attacks. Wtness Kevin Pamon, who recorded the incident and said a mechanic of the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) had some trouble opening the elevator.

Eventually, the fire department and the CTA were able to free everyone safely either by ladder through the top of the elevator or through the door.

A CTA spokesperson said at approximately 4:40 p.m. emergency personnel were notified of customers detained inside an elevator at the station. CTA personnel immediately notified the Chicago Fire Department who rushed to the rescue of the customers.

CTA has 12 miles of underground subway, or 24 miles of individual tunnels, on the Blue and Red Lines.

Devotees took turns in reading the Holy Book and exactly at 11 am next day, the Ramayan Path was completed after 24 hours.

People sang and danced with joy to celebrate the auspicious start of the New Year.

The Mandir was beautifully decorated with flowers, lights, buntings, banners etc. to usher in a new year of peace and prosperity.

A grand lunch was served by the temple and people exchanged greetings, good wishes, embraced each other to seek blessings and prayed for the wellbeing of all mankind.

In Hari Om Mandir, January 1 is also a day of administrative activity. The two Boards-Executive Board (EB) and Board of Trustees (BOT)--that run the show all year round, are introduced to the general congregation.

Man faces 4-year jail for attacking Muslim

BY A STAFF WRITER ACKSONVILLE, FL -- A Florida man accused of attacking a store clerk in Queens last month while muttering “I kill Muslims” has been indicted on hate crime charges.

Authorities said Piro Kolvani, 55, from Jacksonville, Fla., was hit with four charges, including third-degree assault as a hate crime and other assault counts.

Kolvani allegedly walked into a store on 21st Ave. in Astoria last month and approached clerk Sarker Haque, who is a Muslim.

Haque was trying to ask Kolvani a question when the Florida man blurted, “I kill Muslims,” according to the criminal charges.

He began striking Haque in the face.

According to Queens District Attorney Richard Brown, the store owner was left with a bloody lip and multiple facial bruises.

Kolvani was released on his own recognizance and ordered to return to court on February 11. If convicted, he faces up to four years in prison.

“This kind of ignorance and intolerance is unacceptable,” Brown said.

It is time to honor and acknowledge the services of the outgoing members who have completed their term, and welcome aboard new members, who will be taking charge and serving the community in 2016.

This year, Vipan Wadhera was introduced as the new president of the EB, who took charge from the outgoing president Indrajit Sarkar. Similarly, Ayodhya Salwan completed

The festivities in HOM, however, did not end on January 1. Every first Saturday of the month, a Mata Ki Chowki is held in the HOM, where devotees sing bhajans/bhents in praise of Mata Vaishno Devi.

This year, the Chowki was held in continuation of the New Year celebrations.

On January 2, devotees again got together to seek blessings from Maa Durga. People in large numbers gathered once again to make this a special occasion of fun, festivity and joy.

Prosecutors announced last week that 25-year-old Emanuel Lutchman, of Rochester, had been charged with attempting to provide material support to terrorists. He was snared in an FBI sting.

A federal complaint says Lutchman is a self-professed convert to Islam who claimed to receive direction from an overseas Islamic State member and planned to carry out an attack at a bar in the Rochester area on December 31.

The FBI says Lutchman had an accomplice who was actually working for the agency. The duo bought knives and a machete for the attack.

Indian billionaire offers to trade Martins beach

BY A STAFF WRITER ILICON VALLEY, CA -Indian American entrepreneur Vinod Khosla, co-founder of Sun Microsystems and founder of Khosla Ventures in Silicon Valley, Vinod Khosla who has been embroiled in a four-year legal battle over Martins Beach in Half Moon Bay, Calif., has offered to trade the property to the State Lands Commission for a similar beach with private access.

Khosla bought Martins Beach in 2008 and cut off access to the popular site two years later by gating off the only road down to the beach. The previous owners, the Deeney family, had allowed public access to the beach, which is popular with surfers, fishermen and picnicking families.

In California, all beaches are open to the public up to the mean tide line, the highest point at which waves crash into the shore. The California Coastal Commission has fined Khosla $11,250 per day since 2008 for disallowing access to the beach.

Two lawsuits against Khosla have resulted in differing outcomes. San Mateo, Calif., Superior Court Judge Gerald Buchwald in 2013 cited the Treaty of Hidalgo in ruling that Khosla could keep Martins Beach private.

However, on December 5, San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Barbara Mallach ordered Khosla to reopen the gate on a private road.

Additionally, a legislation sponsored by California state Senator Jerry Hill gave the state until December 31 to come to some sort of agreement with Khosla. If both parties cannot agree, the Coastal Commission has the option to use eminent domain to purchase the land from Khosla to re-establish access to the beach.

Various estimates for purchasing the land range from $1 million to $10 million.

Under eminent domain, Khosla must sell his property to the state.

He is one of only three recipients in the world to receive this honor for the 2015-16 academic year.

The fellowships are awarded to further graduate education in electrical insulation and dielectric phenomena, and are open to students worldwide who are pursuing a doctorate degree.

Indian students doing illegal jobs deported

BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- The Department of Homeland security is keeping a tab on students on F-1 visas doing jobs outside of their institution of study, and if found to be working illegally, deporting them.

An Indian newspaper report spoke about a student, Srikanth P., who had been deported.

He was quoted as saying: “After reaching Hyderabad airport, I met a student who was already in USA and was deported for working there. He was working there at an eatery and had intended to leave his job fearing deportation but was caught on the last day of his job. The authorities checked with the eatery after he left and went back to the

university to question his eligibility to work.”

The English daily also talked to a consultant in the education business, P. Anil Kumar, director, Youthworld Consulting.

He said: “Most universities allow the students to work legally once they are on a curricular practical training or optional practical training programs. And in these cases, they are not deported. Students are being scrutinized heavily now.”

Added the consultant: “Authorities are even going back to universities and checking on student attendance, checking with local part-time jobs and deporting students now. As there are ample part-time jobs, most students take up jobs on landing there. Shocked by the recent deportations, many students have

already left jobs.”

The flow of students deported from various airports in the US to Hyderabad continued on January 3, too, with 10 more dejected students landing there, the paper reported. The students landed at the Shamshabad airport, taking the count to 25

by January 3.

Immigration department authorities hinted at more deported students expected to reach here.

The report said deported students shared stories of how “intense combing on all parttime illegal jobs in places like gas stations, supermarkets and eateries have prompted many of their friends to give up on the $ 5- 6 per hour jobs that many survive on.”

500 poor families get aid from Sikhs in LA

BY A STAFF WRITER ACOIMA, CA -- More than 500 low-income families here received help this season at a Holiday Community Food Drive hosted by Khalsa Care Foundation, a Sikh American non-profit organization.

The foundation provides community services for children, youth and adults, and sustains the social vitality and cultural vibrancy of the Sikh American heritage, according to a press release.

The event, which took place at the Sikh gurdwara here, included a warm vegetarian meal, giveaways, games and a raffle. Organizers and volunteers distributed 1,500 bags of food, toiletries and amenities, clothes, toys and more to the more than 500 families gathered.

In addition, there was a raffle of four Target gift cards worth $50 each and toys for several families. Children and teenagers also enjoyed carnival games, prizes, ice cream, cotton candy and popcorn.

Guests included representatives from the offices of Congressman Tony Cardenas, LA Mayor Eric Garcetti, LA city councilman Felipe Fuentes, Senator Robert Hertzberg, Assemblywoman Patty Lopez and LAUSD board member Monica Ratliff.

According to the 2010 Census, about 17 per cent of households in Pacoima are at or below the poverty level.

A recent study by the Center for Southern California Studies at California State University, Northridge, showed that the proportion of families living at or below the poverty level remained extremely high in the Northeast San Fernando Valley with Pacoima exceeding countywide averages.

In the past, the Sikh American community has provided food and needed items to the Fred Jordan Mission on Skid Row, but in recent years it has looked to support local families and neighbors in Pacoima through a holiday community event at its gurdwara as part of ‘seva’, meaning selfless service to others.

Indian engineer’s device on extent of eye injury

BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- An Indian American engineer and an ophthalmologist in the US are developing a portable sensor that can quickly and inexpensively determine whether an eye injury is mild or severe.

The device, called OcuCheck, measures levels of Vitamin C in the fluids that coat or leak from the eye, according to a University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign statement.

“The sensor takes advantage of the fact that the ocular tear film--the viscous fluid that coats the eyeball--contains low levels of ascorbic acid, which is just Vitamin C, while the interior of the eye contains much higher levels,” said the university’s bioengineering professor Dipanjan Pan. Pan is creating the device in collaboration with Carle ophthalmologist Leanne Labriola.

“So the concept is, if there is severe damage to the eye that penetrates deeply, the ascorbic acid will leak out in high concentration.”

Two post-doctoral researchers in Pan’s laboratory, Manas Gartia and Santosh Misra, helped develop the new sensor.

At present, those with eye injuries must find their way to a hospital to have their injuries assessed. The process is often complicated, timeconsuming and imprecise, Pan said.

The sensor could speed efforts to determine the extent of eye injuries at accident sites, in the rural areas lacking ophthalmology specialists or on the battlefield, the researchers said.

The researchers’ work was reported in the journal Scientific Reports.

BY A STAFF WRITER HACKENSACK, NJ -- A Glen Rock attorney has become the top law enforcement official in Bergen County.

Bergen County Assignment Judge Bonnie Mizdol administered the oath in her courtroom on January 4 to new Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir Grewal, who also becomes the first Sikh county prosecutor in the state and the first of South Asian descent.

Grewal introduced himself to his assistant prosecutors and investigators in a jokeladen speech. He praised the “tremendous reputation” of the prosecutor’s office and pledged to build on it.

Grewal has been a federal prosecutor most of his career. He most recently served as chief of the economic crimes unit at the US Attorney’s Office in New Jersey.

Gov. Chris Christie appointed Grewal to replace outgoing prosecutor John L. Molinelli, who had held the post since 2002.

Molinelli plans to return to private practice at the firm of Price, Meese, Shulman and D’Arminio in Woodcliff Lake.

State Sen. Kevin O’Toole, a Republican who represents parts of northwestern Bergen County, praised the appointment. Christie first nominated Grewal for the job in 2013, but the nomination never cleared the Senate.

O’Toole believes the Senate will bless the choice this time and remove the “acting” part of the title for Gerwal, a Democrat.

Grewal said he would keep an open door to his new staff.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced that it is preparing for a number of large-scale raids targeting recent immigrants who the DHS considers to be highpriority for deportation.

The highest priority will be those who have final orders of deportations after January 1, 2014.

Then, those who have missed their court dates or overstayed their visas after January 1, 2014.

According to an interesting survey, people who think about sex several times a day also use emoji icons the most often. Conducted by online dating website Match.com, the researchers found that something as innocuous as a food item emoji icon can be employed to denote body parts or sex, medicaldaily.com reported. “[Emoji users] want to give their texts more personality. Emoji users don’t just have more sex, they go on more dates and they are two times more likely to get married,” Helen Fisher, who led the survey told Time Magazine.

The survey involving 5,000 people found that 36-40 percent of peo-

ple who think about sex several times a day use more than one emoji in every text.

People who never think about sex said they used them less frequently.

“Most people who reported thinking about sex once a day said they use emojis but not in every text,” the findings showed.

The group that used emojis the least was those who said they think about sex just once a month.

A previous study by Match.com — a dating platform that serves 25 countries in more than eight languages — revealed more than half of the men and women surveyed used the “wink” emoji to flirt with a date.

The “smiley” emoji was the second most popular emoji to help people in courtship. The previous study also found that 54 percent of singles who use emojis have more sex than the 31 percent of those who just rely on their words.

The workings of neural circuits associated with creativity are significantly altered when artists are actively attempting to express emotions, the researchers report.

“The bottom line is that emotion matters. It can’t just be a binary situation in which your brain is one way when you’re being creative and another way when you’re not,” said senior author Charles Limb from University of California-San Francisco.

“Instead, there are greater and lesser degrees of creative states, and different versions. And emotion plays a crucially important role in

these differences,” he explained.

The team focused in a brain region known as the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), which is involved in planning and moni-
