he on-field antics from cricketers of either side in the ongoing IndiaAustralia series are refusing to die down, with the Australian media comparing home skipper Virat Kohli to US President Donald Trump. Kohli, who had earlier lashed out at the Australians before falling short of calling them ‘cheats’ after the second Test in Bengaluru, was held accountable for continual perpetuation of fake news by Australian newspaper The Daily Telegraph. The newspaper alleged that the 28-year-old Delhi batsman launched a scandalous attack on his opposite number Steve Smith and the Kangaroos where he accused of them being systematic cheats, but refused to apologize or provide any concrete evidence. “Virat Kohli has become the

‘I love Kohli and Australian public love him’

NEW DELHI: Former Australia skipper Michael Clarke has slammed his country’s media for “tarnishing” India skipper Virat Kohli’s image, stressing that his country “loves” the Indian except a handful of journalists. “Comparing Virat Kohli with Donald Trump — what a load of s**t is that? What Virat did, even (Steven) Smith would have,” Clarke was quot-

ed as saying by India Today. “Bear in mind, I love Kohli and the Australian public love him. It’s just two or three reporters who are trying to tarnish him but Virat shouldn’t be bothered.” “I always somehow find an Australian in him the way he plays and I absolutely love how he accepts challenges,” he added.

‘KOHLI IS TRUMP OF WORLD ”We were underestimated by most, thinking it will be one of those typical desi events. But the attendees were blown away by the content, productions values, organization, SPORT The incredible journey of Pujara gains No 2 slot, and overall quality of the show” - Bhavesh Patel Donald Trump of world sport. Just like President Trump, Kohli decided to blame the media as a means of trying to hide the egg smeared right across his face,” the newspaper reported this week. After completion of the third Test, which ended in a draw at

Ranchi, Kohli had on Monday accused the visitors of trying to disrespect the Indian team physio Patrick Farhart. “They (four-five of them) started taking Patrick’s name. I don’t know why. He’s our physio. His job is to treat me. I don’t find the reason

behind it. I could not understand. You must ask why they have started taking his name,” Kohli said at post match press conference. Kohli, who hurt his shoulder while fielding on the opening day of the third Test, only came to bat on the third day. Later, it was Australian

all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, who started mocking the India captain, when he dived to save a boundary. Kohli gave it back with similar gestures, when left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja went through opener David Warner’s defense in the second innings.

Adityanath The Great Khali

NEW DELHI: From living under circumstances where getting two meals a day seemed difficult, a man decided to fight against his destiny and overcome the hurdles to win the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) championship. This is the story of The Great Khali. “The Man Who Became Khali,” written in seemingly simple language, is a short memoir of the journey of Dalip Singh Rana who later went on to become the The Great Khali. The 178-page book is spread over 27 short chapters, opening with a prologue which conveys the thought behind the book. He writes about one incident when people flocked around him, making him feel like a superstar. It was one of his friends who suggested with the idea of scripting down his emotions in the form of a biography. The next pages are set in chronological order of the incidents that happened in the wrestler’s life. The initial chapters take readers through his struggling days where he writes about his biggest regret in life -- not completing his basic education. Being a fifth standard drop-out,

ndian players continued to rule the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Test rankings as Ranchi double-centurion Cheteshwar Pujara gained four spots to a career-best No.2 spot while his teammate Ravindra Jadeja consolidated his stay on top of the bowler’s list after pushing fellow tweaker Ravichandran Ashwin to the No.2 spot. Jadeja, who grabbed nine Australian wickets in the drawn third Test, gained seven points after starting joint-first with Ashwin at 892 points. The left-arm spinner has

become only the third Indian player after Ashwin and Bishan Bedi to top the bowling charts on his own. Jadeja, who grabbed five for 124 and four for 52 in Ranchi, has also closed in on a major landmark as his tally of 899 rating points puts him on the brink of becoming only the second India bowler after Ashwin to touch the 900-point mark. Ashwin, who had a highest rating of 904 points, has slipped 37 points behind Jadeja to 862 points after finishing with only two wickets in Ranchi. India pacer Umesh Yadav also gained three places to find himself at a career-high No.26 while South

on the job Khali had to face huge criticism and go through humiliation. “Being uneducated, I know the pain of not receiving a good education. I had to face a lot of hardships due to the lack of knowledge and communication skills. I remember feeling a sharp sting in my heart when people mocked me because I couldn’t speak English, when I was not able to make quick calculations or when I wasn’t able to fill the participation forms by myself,” he mentions in the book. However, just like in Bollywood films, here too, the protagonist rises, defeats all odds and progresses on the path of success. Lady Luck finally bestows her blessing upon him, and brings in good days.

Cheteshwar Pujara

Africa spinner Keshav Maharaj has risen 15 places to reach a careerbest 37th spot after taking eight wickets against New Zealand in Wellington while Mustafizur Rahman of Bangladesh jumped 20 spots to be positioned at No.47.

Third Test: Handscomb, Marsh carry Oz to safety RANCHI: The middle order duo of Shaun Marsh and Peter Handscomb produced some gritty batting to help Australia salvage a draw against India in the third cricket Test match at the Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA) Stadium here. Handscomb and Marsh forged a

brilliant 124-run fifth-wicket stand as Australia ended their second innings at 204/6 and denied the hosts any chance of gaining a 2-1 lead in the series. The Indians had declared their first innings at 603/9 on the fourth day for a lead of 152 runs in response to Australia’s first innings total of 451.

Handscomb consumed 200 deliveries and remained unbeaten on 72. Marsh produced his own impersonation of a stone wall at the other end, taking up 197 deliveries enroute to an extremely patient 53 before falling to an excellent catch by Murali Vijay off Ravindra Jadeja’s bowling.

Trump to attend NATO summit The announcement came after US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson decided to skip NATO foreign ministers’ meeting IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump will attend a NATO leaders’ summit scheduled for May, the White House said. “The President looks forward to meeting with his NATO counterparts to reaffirm our strong commitment to NATO, and to discuss issues critical to the alliance, especially allied responsibility-sharing and NATO’s role in the fight against terrorism,” the White House said in a statement this week. It added that, in addition to meeting the leaders, Trump will host NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at the White House next month. The April meeting with Stoltenberg has been arranged to prepare for a May 25 summit in Brussels on the “new security environment, including the alliance’s

Trump’s SC pick completes Senate hearings WASHINGTON: Neil Gorsuch, President Donald Trump’s nominee for the vacant Supreme Court seat, completed his Senate confirmation hearings and managed to avoid commenting on the legality of the travel ban. The three hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee came to a conclusion on Wednesday without Gorsuch having to take a public position on Trump’s executive order, an issue of vital importance to Democrats, who want to assure themselves that the magistrate has the willpower to oppose the President who nominated him, Efe news reported. The ability of the judge to dodge the questions of Democratic lawmakers ultimately began to “irritate” California Senator Dianne Feinstein, the highest-ranking Democrat on the committee. “What worries me is you have been very much able to avoid any specificity like no one I have ever seen before,” Feinstein said. “And maybe that’s a virtue, I don’t know. But for us on this side, knowing where you stand on major questions of the day is really important to a vote ‘aye’, and so that’s why we pressed and pressed.” Even at earlier hearings, Gorsuch continued to avoid making any pronouncement on the revised travel ban signed by Trump on March 6 to temporarily bar US entry to refugees and the citizens of six Muslim-

majority nations, a measure that has since been blocked by two federal judges. Gorsuch also managed to dodge taking a position on abortion, samesex marriage and campaign financing, the dynamic of which changed in 2010 when the Supreme Court allowed the creation of socalled “superPACs” that can take in and donate unlimited amounts of money to political candidates. Gorsuch answered all these questions with the same phrase: “I have declined to offer any promises, hints or previews of how I’d resolve any case.” Thus, like many other Supreme Court nominees, Gorsuch was able to get through the confirmation hearings without taking a political position that could restrict him in future votes on the high court.

attendance comes on the heels of a decision by US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to skip a NATO foreign ministers’ meeting, and instead host Chinese President Xi

Jingping later this month, before visiting Russia in April. The State Department has suggested “alternative dates” to NATO for the meeting, said the report. Tillerson’s decision not to attend the NATO ministerial meeting in Brussels has led to consternation amongst the US’ European allies. “Seeing the Chinese, then going to Russia and avoiding NATO in the middle — it’s weird,” said one NATO diplomat. “It shows that they don’t care about NATO. They are not multilateral.” State Department acting spokesman Mark Toner said that the meeting’s dates didn’t fit in Tillerson’s schedule and a NATO official confirmed that the group was still negotiating with the State Department to schedule the meeting. Toner said the agency is “certainly appreciative of the effort to accommodate Secretary Tillerson”.

37% fans of Trump presidency WASHINGTON: Only 37 percent Americans have said they approve of President Donald Trump’s job performance, with 56 percent saying that they do not, according to a new poll. The Quinnipiac University poll said the latest figures are lower than earlier this month, when 41 percent said they were fans of his presidency, CNN reported. Just four-in-10 voters said they thought Trump cares about average Americans compared to about 57 percent of Americans who feels he does not. The remaining 40 percent respondents said he does care about average people marks a four-point drop from a similar poll in February. Trump has spent his first months hamstrung by a series of events, such as his debunked insistence that Trump Tower was wiretapped by former President Barack Obama and the lengthy saga over campaign ties to Russia.

Will new health care deal go through? IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump and House Republicans were still scrambling to reach a deal on legislation to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA) or Obamacare ahead of a vote on Thursday, the media reported. House Speaker Paul Ryan held a long meeting with moderate Republicans. During the meeting, Republican Representative Charlie Dent, the leader of a moderate group, slammed the bill spearheaded by Ryan and Trump. The vote count for the bill is “tight”, CNN reported. As of Wednesday night, 24 House Republicans have flat-out said they will vote against the bill called the American Health Care Act, while four more have indicated they were likely to oppose it. However, the Freedom Caucus — a conservative Republican faction — is sounding more optimistic than ever after talking with Trump and the party leaders. Trump was personally calling individual members of the Freedom Caucus on Wednesday evening as a possible deal emerged. Trump is not at all involved in the details, a presidential aide told CNN. “Either (he) doesn’t know, doesn’t care or both,” an aide told CNN. But he is very involved in the sale now, and “appears energized by that”. House Republicans unveiled a

Another alteration would immediately prevent states from

expanding Medicaid. Trump and Ryan must get 216 Republicans on board and can afford only 21 defections, if no Democrat joins them. Trump has been meeting with lawmakers at the White House to press for votes, but shied away from a public display of confidence. Asked if he plans to keep trying on health care if the House bill fails, the President said: “We’ll see what happens”, CNN reported. Trump has warned of big losses at the ballot box if Republicans fail to repeal and replace Obamacare, and the White House insists there is no alternative legislation or plan if they fail. “There is no Plan B. There’s Plan A and Plan A,” said White House press secretary Sean Spicer. “We’re going to get this done”.

CAN MODI TAME YOGI? So far, the BJP’s emphasis has remained on development with even Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath articulating the key word, vikas, in his first few comments after taking over AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

D

id the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) desist from naming its Chief Ministerial candidate for UP before the assembly polls because it wanted to spring a nasty, or pleasant, surprise - depending on one’s point of view - on an unsuspecting public? For some, the earlier deafening silence on a possible Chief Minister might have been a deceitful ploy considering that as virtually the sole effective campaigner, Narendra Modi gave the impression that he remains focused on development notwithstanding a few sops to the Hindutva brigade as in the ‘kabaristhan-shamshan ghat’ controversy relating to the Samajwadi Party’s alleged partiality towards the Muslims. To critics such as these, the choice of Yogi Adityanath — perhaps the most trenchant of the saffron hardliners — as UP’s Chief Minister is also a message to the BJP’s core constituency of communal-minded Hindus that for all the talk about ‘sabka saath’ and ‘sabka vikas’ or development for all, Modi’s heart remains in the absolutely right place.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi greets Yogi Adityanath at the swearing-in ceremony of the new government, in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. (Photo: IANS)

The jury will be out till it becomes clear whether the BJP is playing a double game. However, to give it the benefit of doubt, it has to be admitted that so far the party’s emphasis has remained on development with even the Yogi articulating the key word, vikas, in

his first few comments after his selection was announced while the central observer, Venkaiah Naidu, repeated it thrice to remove all the misgivings. There is little doubt, however, that the choice of Yogi is one of the most audacious of gambles by

Modi, far more than the demonetization venture. If the prime minister can make a person, whose anti-minority hate speeches figure prominently in Google searches, to change his saffron stripes, it will be an extraordinary achievement. Perhaps Modi believes that if he

himself can change from being a textbook fascist, as sociologist Ashis Nandy said, or a modern-day Nero, in the Supreme Court’s view, or a person who “presided” over the killing of thousands, in Manmohan Singh’s words, into an “avatar of modernism and progress”, to quote Congress M.P. Shashi Tharoor, then so can the Yogi. It is also undeniable that if anyone can bring about such a seminal transformation, it is Modi. It’s not only that there is no one else in the BJP who is capable inducing a metamorphosis of this magnitude, there has also been a manifold increase in Modi’s clout after UP’s overwhelming verdict in the favor of BJP. As the master of all he surveys at the moment, he can take the party and the country in almost any direction that he wants. For the BJP, sushashan or good governance in U.P. is indispensable because of Modi’s promise of enhancing its growth rate since, as he said, India’s growth is linked to that of its biggest state. Since UP is one of the BIMARU or sick states, the challenge is all the greater. Modi, therefore, can be said to have embarked on one of his most daring missions.

Trump nominates Indian American for appeals court

Why was Preet Bharara sacked?

Amul Thapar will be the second person from the community at the appellate court level, joining Judge Sri Srinivasan who was appointed by Barack Obama IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump announced this week that he is nominating IndianAmerican federal judge Amul Thapar for elevation to an appeals court, the second highest level of the US judiciary. Appeals courts are just below the Supreme Court. Thapar was on the shortlist of Trump’s picks for the Supreme Court that was announced during last year’s election campaign. Describing him as “the son of Indian-American immigrants”, and the first federal district judge of South Asian descent, the White House said that if confirmed by the Senate, Thapar will join the bench of the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, which covers the two important states of Michigan and Ohio, in addition to Kentucky and Tennessee. Thapar, 47, will be the second person from the community at the appellate court level, joining Judge Sri Srinivasan, who was appointed by the then President Barack Obama to the powerful bench that covers Washington. Thapar is cur-

rently a federal judge in Kentucky, appointed by the then President George W. Bush in 2007. The likelihood of Thapar’s confirmation by the Republican-controlled Senate is very strong and he has the strong backing of the Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who has described him as “a friend.” His full name is Amul Roger Thapar. He has a law degree from the University of California at

Berkeley and was a federal prosecutor in Kentucky before he was made a judge. McConnell, who disclosed Trump’s plan to nominate Thapar, said in a statement: “I applaud the President for announcing his intent to nominate my friend, Judge Amul Thapar, to serve on the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. Throughout his already impressive career of public service, Amul has shown an

incredible intellect and an unshakable dedication to the law.” McConnel said he looked forward to Thapar’s confirmation by the Senate, saying: “He has earned the respect of his colleagues, and I know that he will bring to the Sixth Circuit the same wisdom, fairness, and ability that he has shown on the District Court.” South Asian Bar Association President Vichal Kumar welcomed the nomination and called him a “respected and thoughtful jurist who has long served as role model for the South Asian and greater legal community”. Srinivasan was on Obama’s short list of candidates for the Supreme Court. However, Obama finally appointed Merrick Garland to succeed the late Justice Antonin Scalia. Garland’s nomination was not taken up by the Senate and it lapsed. Trump nominated Neil Gorsuch for the vacancy and Senate took it up for consideration. There are likely to be other vacancies on the bench where there are three judges over the age of 77. Should a vacancy arise, Thapar is a stronger contender to be on the short list of candidates for the vacancy.

WASHINGTON: Fired US Attorney Preet Bharara was investigating a key member of President Donald Trump’s cabinet, a new report has revealed. Bharara was looking into allegations that Tom Price, the Health and Human Services Secretary and the administration’s point man on efforts to repeal and replace ObamaCare, improperly traded healthcare stocks while he was a member of the House of Representatives, New York Post reported this week. Price maintained that he broke no laws when he traded healthcare stocks even as he was involved in legislation relevance to the healthcare sector. He traded over $300,000 worth of shares of relevant companies during a fouryear period in the House, the report said. The revelation that Bharara was investigating Price comes as many were surprised the US attorney from the Southern District of New York was not retained by the Trump administration.

‘Strategic ties with US secondary to Indians’ interests’ ‘Attacker of Indian priest arrested’

IANS, NEW DELHI

E

xternal Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has said that strategic ties with Washington won’t prevent India from raising issues concerning Indians and Indian Diaspora with the US. Replying to a question in the Rajya Sabha on hate crimes against Indians in the US, she said that for the Modi government, the interests of Indians preceded strategic partnership with any country. “Strategic partnership does not mean we will ignore the interests of the Indians (living in US),” she said in reply to a question raised by CPI’s D. Raja. “For us, strategic partnership is secondary. The safety and security of Indians and people of Indian origin is primary. Have no doubts that we would keep silent because we have strategic relations with a country.” Addressing concerns raised by members as to whether a trend in hate crimes was emerging in the US, Sushma Swaraj said New Delhi was “closely monitoring” the situation.

NEW DELHI: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has said that Australian Police have arrested the attacker of the Indian priest, who was stabbed in Melbourne, and charged him with attempt to murder. “Our Consulate officials met Father Mathew in the hospital. The police have arrested the attacker and charged him with attempt to murder,” Sushma Swaraj said in a tweet this week. “Our Consulate is in touch with

the police authorities and will keep us informed of the progress of the case,” she tweeted. Father Mathew, a Catholic priest from Kerala, was attacked by an Italian on March 19 when the former was leading the Sunday mass in a Melbourne church. He was immediately rushed to the hospital. Speaking on the reason for attack, the minister said: “The attacker had a problem with Father Mathew presiding over the church.”

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj

“Till date, the US authorities are saying these are sporadic incidents. But we are watching if a trend is emerging. We are sure the US authorities would not let these hate crimes become a trend.” In last few weeks, at least three incidents of attacks on Indians in the US have been reported. On February 22, Srinivas Kuchibhotla, a 32-year-old Indian engineer, was shot dead by a US national, Adam Purinton, in a bar in

Kansas. On March 2, Harnish Patel, a US national of Indian origin, was shot dead by unknown individuals in Lancaster, South Carolina. On March 4, Deep Rai, also a US national of Indian origin, was shot by an unknown person near Seattle, allegedly after being asked to leave the country. “The government has taken up this issue with the US government at very high levels and conveyed our deep concerns. We have called for

necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of Indian Diaspora and expeditious investigation into these incidents,” she said in her statement earlier. She pointed out that President Donald Trump said on February 28 that the US “stands united in condemning hate and evil in all its forms”. “Several Senators and Congressmen have also expressed their condolences and regret over the tragic incidents. They have been deeply

appreciative of the contribution and role of the Indian community in the US. “I would like to reassure this House and the members that safety and security of Indian Diaspora abroad remains a top priority for this government. “We are in a continuous dialogue with the US government. Close contacts with the local Indian community groups are being maintained through our embassy and consulates to address emergent issues,” she said.

Terror hits ‘heart’ of London

The attack near Parliament killed four people including a woman in her 40s, a man in his 50s, police officer Keith Palmer and the attacker IANS, LONDON

S

even suspects were taken into custody in Britain as police on Thursday put the death toll in the terror attack in the heart of London at four. Seven of the people wounded in the Wednesday attack near Parliament were still in hospital and in critical condition, police said. Twenty-nine were discharged from hospitals. Mark Rowley, Acting Deputy Commissioner and head of Counter-Terrorism unit, said the dead included a woman in her 40s, a man in his 50s, police officer Keith Palmer and the attacker. Most media reports earlier said three members of the public were killed when the lone attacker, who has not been identified and who was later shot dead, ran over pedestrians over the iconic Westminster Bridge. He then stabbed the unarmed

SHORT TAKES Damascus offensive: Syrian army kills 150 DAMASCUS: The Syrian army has killed over 150 rebels during the three-day long military showdown in the eastern part of the capital Damascus, state news agency SANA reported on Wednesday. Hundreds of rebels were wounded during the battles, said SANA, adding that the government forces also destroyed three explosiveladen vehicles, and killed seven suicide bombers before reaching their destination at military posts east of Damascus.

Pakistan-Afghanistan border reopens ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Tuesday reopened its border with Afghanistan after it was shut last month following an attack on a Sufi shrine in Sindh that killed over 70 people. Thousands of individuals and cargo vehicles crossed the border to enter the two countries through Torkham and Chaman border crossings, Geo TV reported. Travellers, transporters and traders expressed happiness at the government decision. “The two countries should resolve matters through discussions. Closing the borders is not the right way to find solutions,” a trader said. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ordered on Monday that the Pakistan-Afghan border would reopen. The decision was a “goodwill gesture”, Sharif said.

Palmer on the grounds of Parliament. Rowley said hundreds of detectives worked through the night and carried out searches at six addresses, the BBC reported. Inquiries were held in London, Birmingham and other parts of the

country. “It is still our belief ... that this attacker acted alone and was inspired by international terrorism ... Islamist terrorism,” Rowley said. At least 40 people were hit on the crowded bridge when the attacker drove a 4x4 along the pavement,

knocking down pedestrians before crashing into a fence below Big Ben. One woman fell into the Thames from the bridge but was said to be alive, media reports said. The intruder, described by a witness as “middle-aged and Asian”, broke into the grounds of Parliament where he fatally stabbed the police officer with two knives. The policeman died at the scene. The attacker, shot by other police officers, died after he was taken to hospital. On Thursday, Indian President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined world leaders to denounce the London killings. “Shocked to hear of (the) terrorist attack in London,” Mukherjee tweeted. He said India stood by the United Kingdom and that “terrorism must be met through collective action by the international community”.

May to trigger Brexit on March 29 LONDON: Prime Minister Theresa May will trigger Britain’s exit from the European Union on March 29, a government spokesperson said Theresa May on Monday. Downing Street said Britain’s ambassador to the EU, Tim Barrow, notified the EU of May’s intention verbally. “The Prime Minister will deliver her letter triggering Article 50 to President (Donald) Tusk on Wednesday (March 29), and deliver a statement to announce the move,” a No.10 spokesperson said. He said that May expected negotiations to “start promptly”. Once Article 50 is invoked it will be up to the EU to come back with an early response expected within 48 hours, reported the Independent. The invocation of the Lisbon Treaty article will formally begin Brexit negotiations.

US bans electronics on flights from 8 countries IANS, WASHINGTON

P

assengers headed to the US from eight Muslim-majority countries and North Africa have been barred from carrying electronic devices larger than a cellphone under a new flight restriction enacted on Tuesday by the Trump administration. Officials said the directive was an attempt to address gaps in foreign airport security, and said it was not based on any specific or credible threat of an imminent attack, the New York Times reported. The Department of Homeland Security said the restricted items included laptop computers, tablets, cameras, travel printers and games bigger than a phone. The restrictions would not apply

to aircraft crews, officials said in a briefing to reporters on Monday night that outlined the terms of the ban. The new policy took effect on Tuesday, and must be followed

within 96 hours by airlines flying to the US from airports in Cairo (Egypt), Dubai and Abu Dhabi (UAE), Istanbul (Turkey), Doha (Qatar), Amman (Jordan), Kuwait City, Casablanca (Morocco), Jed-

dah and Riyadh (Saudi Arabia). Officials said the airports were selected based on the “current threat picture” and added that the carriers that fail to follow them risk losing their authorization to operate in the US. The ban applies only to flights on foreign carriers, and not American-operated airlines. Officials did not say how long the ban would remain in place or if other airports would be added, said the report. In all, officials said an estimated 50 flights each day into the US would be affected. The airlines affected are Egyptair, Emirates Airline, Etihad Airways, Kuwait Airways, Qatar Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Royal Jordanian Airlines, Saudi Arabian Airlines and Turkish Airlines.

ndia ranked 122nd, behind terror-riven Pakistan and poorestof-poor Nepal in the global list of the happiest countries, according to a United Nations report released on Monday. India came down by three slots, as last year it was placed at 118th spot. It was behind the majority of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) nations, apart from war-ravaged Afghanistan, that stood at 141.

Among the eight Saarc nations, Pakistan was at 80th position, Nepal stood at 99, Bhutan at 97, Bangladesh at 110 while Sri Lanka was at 120. However, Maldives did not figure in the World Happiness Report. Norway took the top spot from Denmark as the happiest country in the world. The Scandinavian nation, which was ranked fourth in last year’s report, jumped to the top this year on the basis of several key calculations, including levels of caring, freedom to make life decisions,

Nimish Jani tells Indians to engage in local affairs

BY A STAFF WRITER fter completing his first four-yearterm as a Trustee, Township of Schaumburg, Illinois, Nimish Jani has rolled up sleeves for the next rounds of ballots scheduled for April 4. Early voting for the elections will be held between March 20 and April 3. The Republican candidate has vowed to keep property tax low, enhance services without new levies and promote resident engagement. His supporters say Jani’s vision is to be fiscally responsible, strive for a culturally responsive township and make sure that residents are aware and engaged. With the D-Day nearing, Jani, a trustee since 2013, does not want to take ‘anything for granted’ and is focused on a specific agenda in aid of the residents of this thriving township. “For me the upcoming elections are like a wholly new challenge. One has to work as if one is doing it for the first time. I owe it to the residents of this vibrant, multicultural township,” Jani says. Jani has a proven track record of community service during his first term which he plans to build upon for the next four years should he have the privilege to be elected again. A strong proponent of grassroots-level involvement by the Indian Americans and all other ethnic communities, he believes America’s democracy offers everybody a fair chance, from the village-township level right up to the US Congress and Senate. A resident of Schaumburg Township for the past 28 years, Jani is intimately familiar with local issues and their possible solutions. With a population of about 140,000, residents of Indian origin constitute about 18 per cent of the population or about 25,000 who represent all the well-known high-performance demographic indicators in terms of education, median income and overall professional and entrepreneurial success. Of this population, only about 4,200 have registered to vote. One of Jani’s passionate advocacies has been to encourage Indian Americans and other South Asian Americans in Schaumburg to get involved in local government, institutions and boards. “It is my cherished goal to see that each of the township’s agencies has at least one member of our Indian American and South Asian American community working. It is a pity that

A

as a community, we fall woefully short when it comes to getting involved in the affairs of the township,” Jani says. As a small business owner himself, he says he understands the community’s preoccupations with their own financial, entrepreneurial and professional lives. “But at the same time, we owe to this township that we find at least half an hour a day or even a week to make our voices heard on a variety of issues. “It is essential that we make our mark in the running of the affairs at local, state and federal levels. While we do see Indian Americans becoming more active at the state and federal levels, we shy away from getting involved at local levels where it really matters,” Jani says. He specifically points out that while members of the US Congress and Senate are important, “for our daily lives and the overall standards of living, it is at the level of the township and village that we need to pay much more attention.” One of his favorite examples is to bring to the notice of his constituents that the annual property tax that the residents pay includes over a dozen other levies that people do not even realize are included as well. Those levies pay for services that frequently go unused. More often than not, since the

Jani, if elected, has vowed to keep property tax low. Indian American community stays away from local involvement, their cultural needs in terms of local services remain unaddressed. “We just do not speak effectively. For instance, why is it that services are not offered in Hindi as they are in Chinese and Korean? That is because we do not represent our case at all. I am working on ways to change all that,” he says. Many of the nearby townships such as Hoffman Estate, Hanover Park and Elk Grove have on an average 20 per cent Indian/South Asian American population and yet there are hardly any employees in township agencies belonging to those communities. “The importance of having representations on all township boards and bodies as well as employees lies in being able to help craft policies that help our community. Without that level of involvement and commitment our case will go by default,” Jani says. He cites specific examples such as how in the event of inaccuracies in the school curriculum about subjects related to India and South Asia can creep in and remain uncorrected if there is no one forcefully representing the community’s demographic interests.

“Remember, all policies are made according to the demographics,” he says. Quite apart from safeguarding the community’s interests, Jani says there is a bigger point to be made in support of an increased involvement. “America is our home and we owe to this country that we make our contributions in keeping democracy at the grassroots level both vibrant and accountable,” he says. Jani’s core appeal to the Indian American community particularly is quite simple: ‘Register to vote’ and ‘vote’. “One of the myths I encounter is that people believe that registering to vote would mean having to perform jury duty. Jury duty falls under the purview of the Department of Motor Vehicles and not by merely registering to vote. In any case jury duty an important civic function that all citizens must respect,” he says. According to him, Indian Americans often do not vote in local elections under the misguided notion that it would make no difference. “Some of them think that it would make no difference if a few individuals did not vote. If all individuals think that way, how would democracy function? I appeal to all residents to register to vote and vote,” Jani says. Other than the signature promise of a balance budget, lower taxes and efficient services, Jani says he wants focus on community-specific services of particular interest to the Indian Americans. Language barrier often makes availing townships services difficult for a large number of elderly Indian Americans who may not speak English. He wants to address that. “Apart from the property tax, there are so many other levies that make up the annual bill. We do not seem to be using services paid for by those levies. I want the community to be more aware of those,” he says. A health issue unique to the South Asian community is one of a high incidence of heart diseases. It is a well-known fact in the world of medicine that there is a certain genetic predisposition among South Asians towards heart ailments. Jani says a South Asian Cardiovascular Center would go a long way in addressing that serious health challenge. He has extensive experience in community service both within the local Republican Party as well as the Indian American social, cultural and religious organizations. He prides himself in being available to his constituents irrespective of the time.

Maharashtra medicos agitation escalates across the country, pay cuts threatened

Strike cripples health services IANS, MUMBAI

T

he three-day mass Casual Leave by resident doctors in Maharashtra’s government hospital escalated with 40,000 medicos of the Indian Medical Association joining their protest. The state government meanwhile served an ultimatum, asking doctors to resume duties failing which they

could face a six-month pay cut. “We have given them the final ultimatum,” Medical Education Minister Girish Mahajan told the media. Individual hospitals in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra also initiated their own action of slapping show-cause or suspension notices on the agitating medicos. According to a spokesperson for the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD), sus-

AIADMK factions get ‘Electric Pole’, ‘Cap’ CHENNAI: The Election Commission has allotted the symbol “Electric Pole” to the AIADMK faction led by former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam and the “Cap” to the ruling AIADMK group. “We have been given `Electric Pole’ to fight the by-election from Radhakrishnan Nagar constituency. And our group will be called the ‘AIADMK Puratchi Thalaivi Amma’,” former MP K.C. Palaniswamy told IANS. On the other hand, the AIADMK

faction led by the now jailed General Secretary V.K. Sasikala has been given the “cap” symbol and would be known as “AIADMK Amma”. The ruling AIADMK split into two factions after the death of Chief Minister and party icon J. Jayalalithaa. The allotment of the symbols is important as a by-election will be held on April 12 to the Tamil Nadu assembly from Radhakrishnan Nagar, which was represented by the late Jayalalithaa.

Congress MLAs skip Governor’s address PANAJI: Congress legislators wore black bands and staged a walkout during Governor Mridula Sinha’s address in the assembly on March 23. They accused her of “murdering democracy” by not inviting the Congress, which had emerged as the single largest group in the February 4 polls, to form a government. Speaking to reporters in the assembly complex, opposition leader Chandrakant Kavlekar said

Sinha’s decision was “unconstitutional” and “biased”. “We came wearing black bands to ensure that the Governor saw the outrage against her controversial and unconstitutional decision, which was taken on directions from the central government,” the Congress leader said. “She has murdered the Constitution with this decision,” Kavlekar added.

The court also asked the authorities to make provisions to permit only two relatives per patient inside the hospital and said the government should deploy the assured security personnel at various hospitals. The Maharashtra Association of

40,000 member doctors would strike work in government hospitals across the state, but only essential or emergency medical services shall be maintained. Boosting the agitating doctors’ cause, the IMA extended support to the medicos’ demand for implementation of the Violence Against Doctors Act, 2010 and adequate provisions for their security as per court directives. Expressing support to MARD from New Delhi, the AIIMS Resident Doctors Association said that instead of providing security to the medicos, the government was threatening to cut salaries and evict them from hostels. Despite a strong rap by the Bombay High Court on Tuesday, MARD made it clear that the agitation would continue till the government ensured security in hospitals against violence by patients’ relatives.

19 Maharashtra MLAs suspended IANS, MUMBAI

n a drastic move, 19 opposition legislators were suspended till December 31 by Maharashtra Speaker Haribhau Bagade for creating ruckus over farm loans in the house on Saturday. The combined opposition cried foul over the move, terming it “an unconstitutional step and a murder of democracy” and later met Governor C.V. Rao. The house, which reassembled after three days, adopted a resolution moved by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Girish Bapat, seeking suspension of the Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) legislators who disrupted Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar’s budget speech that day. The resolution was adopted with both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and ally Shiv Sena members voting in favor after which the Speaker issued the suspension orders. the combined opposition continued its demand for a complete waiver of farm loans. The Speaker’s suspension order was greeted with protests, a silent sit-in outside the legislature by opposition legislators wearing black bands. They alleged that the government took the step to avoid defeat over a cut motion which requires voting in the house. Condemning the move, Opposition leader Radhakrishna VikhePatil accused the government of

being insensitive to the farmers’ plight and attempting to muzzle the opposition by resorting to undemocratic measures. Later, Vikhe-Patil led an allparty opposition delegation to Governor Rao and submitted a memorandum demanding his directions to the government to revoke the suspension. They also urged him to direct the government to issue directives for announcing writing off all farm debts to bring relief to the farmers who were committing suicide.

‘Kohli is Trump of world sport’ Australian media compares India skipper to US President, ex-Australia skipper Michael Clarke slams media IANS, NEW DELHI

T

he on-field antics from cricketers of either side in the ongoing IndiaAustralia series are refusing to die down, with the Australian media comparing home skipper Virat Kohli to US President Donald Trump.

The incredible journey of The Great Khali NEW DELHI: From living under circumstances where getting two meals a day seemed difficult, a man decided to fight against his destiny and overcome the hurdles to win the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) championship.

Jadeja, who grabbed nine Australian wickets in the drawn third Test, gained seven points after starting joint-first with Ashwin at 892 points. The left-arm spinner has

Marsh produced his own impersonation of a stone wall at the other end, taking up 197 deliveries enroute to an extremely patient 53 before falling to an excellent catch by Murali Vijay off Ravindra Jadeja’s bowling.

amidst 50 real elephants, without a body double,” Raghava told IANS. Arya plays a tribal, a role mod-

elled after Tarzan, in the film, which has been shot against the backdrop of a jungle. “The film has an underlying social message while packed with all commercial elements. It talks about protecting our nature and Arya plays its crusader,” he said. The film is gearing up for April 14 release. It also stars Catherine Tresa as the female lead. Raghava is all praise for his technical crew. “If not for them, the film wouldn’t have been as grandeur as it is now. They worked very hard to keep everything as realistic as possible in the film.

Every film with Rahman is special journey: Mani Ratnam IANS, CHENNAI

A

ce filmmaker Mani Ratnam has said every collaboration with double Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman is a special journey. The filmmaker and composer, along with legendary lyricist Vairamuthu, have been working together for 25 years. Commenting on his long-standing relationship with Rahman, the Roja filmmaker told reporters this week: “It’s been 25 years, but it just feels like I met Rahman yesterday.

“Every film with Rahman is a special journey. He brings newness to each project, new sound and new music.” Ratnam was recently speaking at the audio launch of Kaatru Veliyidai. He said he is thankful for this collaboration with Rahman and Vairamuthi. The triumvirate’s journey started with 1992 Tamil romantic drama Roja. Rahman said he’s blessed to have found a mentor in Ratnam. “I’m thankful to the platform I have received because of Mani sir.

BY A STAFF WRITER IDTOWN, NY -- The older brother of a Long Island man accused of drugging and raping his girlfriend bombarded the victim with dozens of texts and calls in an effort to convince her to recant her claim--and even tried to bribe her into silence, prosecutors charge. Wholesale jeweler Karan Kejariwal, 32, of Rego Park, tried to get his brother Varun Kerajiwal, 24, out of trouble by harassing the woman who accused him of drugging her at a Midtown hotel and violating her as she faded in and out of consciousness. The victim, 31, told the police that she awoke inside the Roosevelt Hotel on East 45th Street at about 7 am on March 4 and realized she had been drugged and raped. She immediately called the police and named Varun, who was collared by the police at the hotel about half an hour later, a police spokesman said. After Kerajiwal was arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court later that night on and released just after midnight on March 5 on $5,000 bail, his big brother began to assail the woman with 40-odd texts and phone calls in an effort to silence her, prosecutors charge. “I will give you $5,000 if you take your

M

statement back,” Karan Kerajiwal, the president of Dialuster Inc., a family-run jewelry wholesale company located in the Diamond District, said in a text message, according to a criminal complaint. Rather than dropping the charges, however, the woman notified the police about Kejariwal’s harassment and bribery attempts, and officers arrested him on March 15 after he turned himself in at the 13th Precinct station house in Gramercy. Karan Kejariwal was charged with felony bribing a witness and misdemeanor witness tampering. He was released on $5,000 bail with a protection order for him to stay away from the victim. He could face up to seven years in jail if convicted. Varun Kejariwal is due back in court on April 3 and Karan Kejariwal is scheduled to appear May 5. Varun Kejariwal was previously arrested just after midnight on November 9, 2016, for drunk driving in Queens, and pleaded guilty on December 21 to a first-offense drunk driving charge. He is due for sentencing in that case on April 5 at Queens Criminal Court.

OHMKara team member Dr. Tushar Patel welcomed the renowned poet, writer, columnist, TV and stage anchor Ankit Trivedi who performed in the wonderfully choreographed and his exceptional poetry style mesmerized the audience in Houston, Rochester-NY, Chicago, Cleveland, Maryland, Connecticut and New Jersey. Trivedi performed for more than two hours in his superb language and poetry and covered various current topics and discussed typical life style and common practices of Gujaratis which kept the audience engaged and entertained throughout the evening in

a delighted mood. OHMKara, under the visionary leadership of Pinakin Pathak and team members Dr. Tushar Patel, Nishil Parikh, Kalpana Mehta, Deepak Trivedi and Ashish Mehta once again worked as one team, one mission and organized flawless events

throughout the country. OHMKara is now getting ready for one of the biggest Gujarati music concerts with sugam, lok sangeet, drama and poetry all in one, an experience like never before with renowned artists from India in 10 cities in the US in August and September.

Judges sent to 12 cities to hasten deportations BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC - A phalanx of immigration judges will be temporarily re-assigned to 12 US cities to help speed deportations of illegal aliens, the US Department of Justice (DOJ) confirmed on March 17. The full plan of the reassignments is still in the works, and the DOJ is looking for volunteers among immigration judges before going forward. Cities the DOJ want to staff up includes New York; Los Angeles; Miami; New Orleans; San Francisco; Baltimore, Bloomington, Minnesota; El Paso, Texas; Harlingen, Texas; Imperial, California; Omaha, Nebraska, and Phoenix, Arizona, says Reuters news service. Early in March, the Trump administration also began sending judges to immigrant detention centers to speed up services. The initial plan came on the heels of a Department of Homeland Security memo that requested the Trump administration allow federal immigration courts to use “expedited deportation proceedings” for any illegal immigrants living in the US for two years or

BY A STAFF WRITER OUSTON, TX -- Indian American engineer Karun Sreerama has been named to head Houston’s Department of Public Works and Engineering by the city’s Mayor Sylvester Turner. Sreerama, 53, a consistent local political donor, would replace retiring director Dale Rudick as chief of Houston’s $2 billion and 4,000-plus-employee operation. If confirmed by the council, the Hyderabad native would start work on April 3 and would also become Houston’s first Asian department director in the process. Sreerama is an engineer with 28 years of experience managing multi-million dollar capital projects across the US and abroad. He is a registered professional engineer and holds a doctorate in civil engineering as well as an MBA. Sreerama said the organization–for decades viewed as rigid and allergic to feedback–must improve its outreach and develop a “servant” mentality. Sreerama said he plans to meet with all Public Works staff about his vision for the department as part of a broader, communications-driven plan for his first 100 days. Sreerama holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Osmania University and a master’s in earthquake engineering for the University of Roorkee. He received another master’s degree in engineering from Cambridge University. After moving to the US, Sreerama earned his doctorate in civil engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla, followed by an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin. Sreerama comes to the city from ESPA Corporation where he served as president and chief executive officer.

less. The process is currently limited to those only living in the US for up to two weeks. According to data provided by the Justice Department’s Executive Office of Immigration Review, there are up to 18,013 pending immigration cases in the cities targeted by the DOJ plan. The plan serves as another plank in President Trump’s promise to step up the

deportations that ground to a halt during the last years of the Obama administration. It also marks a shift from Obama’s practice of deporting only illegals convicted of serious crimes--and even many of those were never deported. Critics of the plan claim that “reshuffling” the judges will only cause a backlog at the courts.

YMAA aids youth to battle Alzheimer’s BY A STAFF WRITER EDLANDS, CA -- Inspired by the realization that he was one of the few youngsters at a national Alzheimer’s summit, Indian American Nihal Satyadev in 2015 founded the Youth Movement Against Alzheimer’s (YMAA). Satyadev, who now studies at the University of Redlands in Redlands, Calif., founded the association when he was a 20-year-old student at UCLA. The baby boomer generation is hitting the age where signs of Alzheimer’s start to show, roughly at age 65. That being said, more people than ever before are at a high risk for Alzheimer’s, and the country’s healthcare system is already struggling, according to YMAA. By 2050, reports show that over 15 million

diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in the United States. YMAA is looking to combat that. Following the summit, the Indian American student returned to campus and soon contacted UCLA’s Alzheimer’s-focused student group, Undergraduate Gerontology and Alzheimer’s Disease Association, and began making changes to the nonprofit. The name was changed to the Youth Movement Against Alzheimer’s and it expanded rapidly with the collaboration of Satyadev, Professor Fernando Torres-Gil, former U.S. secretary of aging; and Dr. Gary Small, a world renowned geriatric psychiatrist. The association opened chapters in more than 20 schools within the first 18 months and has attracted hundreds of students and provided more than 2,000 hours of respite time to caregivers.

BY A STAFF WRITER OLORADO SPRINGS CITY , CO – Janak Joshi, who held the District 16 House seat for three terms before losing out in a June 2016 primary election to Larry Liston, is running for the city council’s District 6 seat. Diwali at Times Square to be held on Oct 7

N

EW YORK, NY – EventGuru Inc. has announced October 7 as the date for this year’s ‘Diwali At Times Square’ celebration. Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is one holiday that unifies the diversity of Indian regional cultures. The Times Square annual celebration is the largest celebration of Diwali outside of India, and it brings the South Asian community together for a funfilled day showcasing cultural dance and musical performances, a Diwali bazaar, and mouth-watering Indian cuisine. The celebration lights up Times Square with interactive, traditional Diya (lamp) lighting ceremonies, and the world’s best digital fireworks display. There will also be a Bollywood celebrityfilled evening concert ,and opportunities to interact with one’s favorite stars. The fun will begin at 2 pm on October 7 in Times Square. The Diwali at Times Square event was established in 2013 by Neeta Bhasin, a nationally-recognized business leader specializing in multicultural marketing. She wanted to bring the most vibrant, national festival of India to the “Center of Universe”–New York’s Times Square--to showcase India’s rich culture, heritage, and arts to the world, while invoking a sense of pride among South Asians. This historic event is managed by ASB Communications, a New York-based multicultural marketing agency now celebrating its 20th anniversary which was founded by Bhasin. Advertising and sponsorship opportunities for Diwali at Times Square are available for businesses and organizations looking to deepen relationships with the

Mayor Rahm Emanuel

C

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Mayor Rahm Emanuel is going against the grain of President Donald Trump with regard to the H-1B visa program. While the President’s plan to cut back the visa program as part of his ‘Buy American, Hire American’initiative has not yet been finalized, Emanuel plans to take advantage of the visa program that technology companies, primarily from India, use to hire highly-skilled foreign workers. The push by the mayor is an attempt to help technology companies in the city grow. The city on March 15 announced its plans to partner with five Chicagobased universities to create the Global Entrepreneur in Residence (GER) programs, the Chicago Sun Times reported. A similar pact was effected in Massachusetts with the University of Massachusetts’ Boston and Lowell campuses. That agreement was used to sponsor 23 local entrepreneurs whose companies have created more than 400 jobs and generated $185 million in private investment since 2014. The GER programs have also been created in New York and Colorado, with universities in Missouri and Alaska working to establish similar programs. The Chicago universities that will participate in the program include Northwestern, Loyola, DePaul, Columbia College Chicago and the Illinois Institute of Technology. In the first year of the program, the universities intend to collectively sponsor up to 20 visa spots, but only for entrepreneurs starting companies who plan to create at least 70 jobs over a threeyear span. Entrepreneurs would have to affiliate with the sponsoring university to qualify. Additionally, early-stage entrepreneurs must hold part-time jobs at the university while growing their startups on the side, while established entrepreneurs will house their companies at the university. Emanuel created ThinkChicago, which has provided roughly 1,300 highperforming technology and engineering students an opportunity to explore the city and connect with local companies during Lollapalooza and Chicago Idea Week. Emanuel has also taken ThinkChicago outside of the city to recruit top-tier students on their own campuses, including Stanford University. With the new visa program effort, it opens the doors for more Chicago-based entrepreneurial success.

LONDON: Despite effective drug treatment, HIV may still persist in the brain and lead to cognitive problems. But, tracking the changes to the brain’s white matter using MRI scans can help spot the deadly virus, say researchers including one of Indian-origin. According to researchers, HIV has spread to the brain in around ten to 15 per cent of patients. The findings, published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases, showed that patients whose brains showed definite signs of change in the white matter were 10 times more likely to have HIV in the brain than those with normal white matter appearances. These changes in the brain — called diffuse white matter signal

MRI may help spot HIV in brain abnormalities — are linked to cognitive problems and can be triggered by inflammation in the brain caused by HIV infection. “HIV treatments have come a long way, but patients whose HIV is suppressed by drugs can still have cognitive problems due to HIV related inflammation,” said Professor Ravi

Gupta from University College London. Currently, the treatment procedures include a lumbar puncture to confirm this, which involves inserting a needle into the back to draw out the spinal fluid and test it for HIV. This is quite an invasive procedure that requires patients to stay in hospital for several hours.

TV may make your kids diabetic

B vitamins may reduce air pollution effects

Children who spend three or more hours of daily screen time show high ponderal index, which is an indicator of weight in relation to height, a study suggests IANS, LONDON

I

f your kid is spending three or more hours daily in front of TV, using computers, games consoles, tablets and smartphones, he or she may be at risk of developing diabetes, a study has showed. The findings showed that children with increased exposure to digital screens may be at risk of having high adiposity levels, which describes total body fat, and, crucially, insulin resistance, which occurs when cells fail to respond to insulin, the hormone produced by the pancreas to control levels of blood glucose. “Our findings suggest that reducing screen time may be beneficial in reducing Type 2 diabetes risk factors, in both boys and girls, from an early age,” said Claire. M.

gale added, in a paper published in the journal Archives of Disease in Childhood. Children who reported spending three or more hours of daily screen time showed high ponderal index — an indicator of weight in rela‘Reducing tion to height — and skinfolds thickness screen time and fat mass — may benefit in indicators of total reducing type 2 body fat — than diabetes in kids in those who said they spent an hour at an early or less on it. age’ Further, there was ‘Screen time-related activities are increasing in childhood’. also a strong link between a daily quota of three or more Nightingale from St George’s, 2 diabetes risk, and recent trends University of London. suggesting that screen time-related hours of screen time and levels of “This is particularly relevant, activities are increasing in child- leptin, the hormone that controls given rising levels of Type 2 dia- hood and may pattern screen-relat- appetite, glucose and insulin betes, the early emergence of Type ed behaviors in later life,” Nightin- resistance, the researchers said.

NEW YORK: Taking B vitamins may reduce some of the adverse effects of air pollution, suggest results of a limited human trial. The study reveals how individual-level prevention may be used to control the potential mechanism underlying adverse effects of the particles PM2.5, where particles have a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometres. Ambient PM2.5 pollution is one of the most prominent air pollutants because they get deposited in the respiratory tract resulting in both lung and systemic inflammation and stress.

Smoking pot raises risk Stem cells can cure platelet problems of stroke, heart failure IANS, NEW DELHI

NEW YORK: Marijuana use may lead to 26 per cent increase in the risk of stroke and a 10 per cent increase in the risk of developing heart failure, an Indian-origin researcher has found. “Like all other drugs, whether they’re prescribed or not prescribed, we want to know the effects and side effects of this drug,” said the study’s lead author Aditi Kalla from Einstein Medical Centre in Philadelphia, US. “It’s important for physicians to know these effects so we can better educate patients, such as those who are inquiring about the safety of

cannabis or even asking for a prescription for cannabis,” Kalla said. The study drew data from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample, which includes the health records of patients admitted at more than 1,000 hospitals comprising about 20 per cent of US medical centres. The researchers extracted records from young and middleaged patients — age 18-55 years — who were discharged from hospitals in 2009 and 2010. Marijuana use was diagnosed in about 1.5 per cent (316,000) of more than 20 million health records included in the analysis.

S

tem cell treatment, which is effective in several health conditions, including spinal problems, can also help cure extreme blood platelet problems such as thrombocytopenia, say doctors. The medical procedure has advantage over available treatments for blood platelet problems such as corticosteroids, blood or platelet transfusions and immunoglobulins medicines. In a case study published in the International Archives of Medicne, a 25-year-old man was treated for thrombocytopenia through stem cell therapy at a city based hospital. His laboratory examinations showed that his platelet count was 0.70 m3. The patient underwent stem cell therapy wherein he was injected with 1 mL stem cells daily through an intravenous route.

Stem cell treatment has advantages over other available platelet treatments.

“The patient was monitored regularly for the occurrence of any reactions during the whole therapy. Platelet count increased to 1.01m3 following the treatment and there were remarkable improvements in other symptoms,” said Geeta Shroff, Stem Cell Specialist, Director, Nutech Mediworld. Shroff has also conducted successful research on patients with spinal

problems, anterior cruciate ligament tear and curing them through stem cell treatment. According to Shroff, thrombocytopenia is defined as the reduction in blood platelet count below the normal platelet count distribution (1.5m3). It is the second most common hematological disorder after anaemia and equally affects both men and women.
