Union, on the other, Secretary General of the Communist party in Bihar, Jagannath Sarkar, had taken up the land question with sufficient success to worry the Congress. Between the Deendayal Upadhyay Institute in Jhandewalan, Gandhi Peace Foundation and Ram Nath Goenka’s apartment in the Indian Express building, a scheme was hatched to resurrect Jaya Prakash Narayan as a counterpoint to Indira Gandhi who seemed invincible after the Bangladesh operations. The Congress (O) leader Morarji Desai went on indefinite hunger strike. The assembly was dissolved. Agitationists had tasted blood. JP, of course, had visited Gujarat to pick up tricks he might employ in the Bihar agitation which initially targeted the country’s most innocuous chief minister, Abdul Ghafoor. JP invited Morarji Desai to be chairman of the Sangharsh Samiti (Action committee).

The IGBT switches energy hundreds of thousands of times a second, raising the efficiency of any equipment manifold. “Every equipment from your refrigerator to lights to motor vehicles has the need to use energy efficiently. If you take away the IGBT today, almost everything will come to a standstill,” Baliga told a visiting IANS correspondent on the eve of receiving the award.

bank that has an ex-commissioner of income tax as its MD and his wife is still commissioner of I-T incharge of money laundering,” Modi posted. He sought an investigation against Nagpal and claimed that
media often turned blind towards such cases as people like Nagpal had connections in high places. Modi said the government should find the (Swiss) bank and the finance minister should ensure he gets them to part with all information on Indians having accounts in this particular bank. Modi claimed several bureaucrats, including I-T and ED officials, had accounts in this Swiss bank. “Go after the real money launderers, look in the right direction instead of going after someone who only gave to his country and created a life changing product called lPL,” he tweeted. He mentioned how two Noidabased brothers reached their peak, one in ED and the other in the I-T department. He exhorted his followers who were blackmailed by them to share their information with him.

ays after they were flooded with financial assistance from all over after cracking the prestigious IIT, Brijesh and Raju — the two sons of a Dalit laborer — now live in fear as their house in Uttar Pradesh’s Pratapgarh was pelted with stones at night. They have now been provided with police security. Armed constables have been posted outside their modest one-room slum house in Rehua Lalganj village. The officials said that the two youth filed a police complaint that unidentified people had pelted their house with stones in the dark.

The duo had on June 22 been felicitated by UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and gifted laptops along with assurance of bearing their education expenses. A police official informed that efforts were on to trace the people who pelted stones and scared the
Dalit family. The youths’ father Dharamraj told investigating officers that he was too dazed to comprehend that they were attacked. The two brothers — aged 18 and 19 years —sat for the IIT entrance test along with 1.3 million students in April this year. They have studied hard and performed well right from childhood. Their commitment to studies has even got them into trouble in the past. In 2005, Brijesh, then 10 years old, got a sound beating from his teacher for questioning the teacher’s Sanksrit translation. Both the brothers scored over 95 percent in their class 10th board examinations.
NEW DELHI: A court here on June 24 took cognizance of a complaint against Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani for allegedly misrepresenting facts in her election affidavits. The court considered the private complaint against Irani and fixed August 28 for recording pre-summoning evidence in the case. One Ahmer Khan in his complaint in April sought action against the minister for allegedly lying on oath about her educational qualification. Khan’s lawyer K.K. Manan told the court that Irani declared herself to be a 1996 batch B.A. graduate from Delhi University in her affidavit filed for the 2004 Lok Sabha election. But in her 2014 Lok Sabha election affidavit, she stated she had done B.Com Part 1 in 1994 from Delhi University. “It is evident...that at best, only one of the depositions by her in respect of her educational qualifications is correct,” the counsel said.
Fake-degree case: Tomar denied bail NEW DELHI: Terming the allegations against Delhi’s former law minister Jitender Singh Tomar in the fake degree case “serious” in nature as he is a legislator, a court here on Monday dismissed his bail application and sent him to 14 days’ judicial custody. The court, while refusing bail to Tomar, said it considered “the gravity of allegation against him as a public representative, who is accused for using alleged false document for getting enrolled as an advocate”. Public Prosecutor Atul Shrivastava opposed the bail plea saying Tomar might tamper with evidence.

J
awaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister, lied to stop Rajendra Prasad from becoming the president after the country’s independence, a new book claims. The book, written by former intelligence officer R.N.P. Singh, says: “Nehru had resorted to desperate measures to prevent Prasad from occupying the position of president and these measures included blatant lying.” The book, ‘Nehru: A Troubled Legacy’, has been published by Wisdom Tree and includes letters writ-

Rajendra Prasad
that he (Nehru) and Sardar Patel had decided that “the safest and best course” would be to have C. Rajagopalachari as the first president of India. Since this ran con-
trary to his understanding of the situation, including the opinion of Sardar Patel and most members of the Constituent Assembly, Rajendra Prasad expressed the next day his deep disappointment and hurt at the way Nehru had dealt with him. Rajendra Prasad marked a copy of this letter to Sardar Patel, who was in Bombay (now Mumbai) that day. Patel was surprised to learn of the contents of Nehru’s letter because he and Nehru had never discussed whether Rajaji or Rajendra Prasad should be the president. Nor had he and Nehru concurred that Rajaji should be their choice.

Emergency changed the Indian politics
Huge crowds gathered whenever Jaiprakash Narayan convened a public meeting; (below) Newspapers clippings showing declaration of Emergency on June 25, 1975.
In 1977, the coalition woven by JP during the Bihar movement came to power in Delhi as the Janata Party under Morarji Desai. Indian politics had taken a turn that was going to last SAEED NAQVI, NEW DELHI
O
f course there was an Indian, regional and global context in which Indira Gandhi declared a state of Emergency on June 25, 1975. The 70s were a decade of fierce contest between the West and the Soviet Union. Where was India in all of this? It turns out that the intense east-west contest of the 70s may well have begun in India. In 1969, Indira Gandhi split the congress along ideological lines. The right wing, business friendly party bosses, the Congress (O), searched for and found like-minded groups they could coalesce with - Jana Sangh (which later became the
BJP), RSS, (BJP’s ideological mentors), Socialists (in their anti communism, close to all the groups listed above), and the professional Gandhians, Hindu and austere. This coalition acquired urgency because Indira Gandhi had begun to lean directly on the Communist Party boss, S.A. Dange. Colleagues like Mohan Kumaramangalam, P.N. Haksar were strong leftist influences on her. Global moves, counter moves were on. Henry Kissinger was plotting a Washington, Beijing, Moscow triangle. Just then the Indo-Soviet Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation was signed. On the one hand, India was now in a vice-like grip of the Soviet
And yet, by 1973 a powerful youth movement was taking shape
in Gujarat ignited by students. They were protesting against inadequate hostel facilities. Mysteriously, the dissolution of the state assembly became a prime demand.
The senior most RSS leader Nanaji Deshmukh, was its convener. It was Nanaji Deshmukh and his RSS cadres on whose shoulders the Bihar movement was carried. Peter Hazlehurst of The Times, London, described Indira Gandhi’s politics in a pithy phrase: she is a little left of self interest. It was her dependence on the left and the Soviet Union that the JP movement sought to bring under strain. Pressure was kept up, first by a successful Railway strike in May 1974 led by George Fernandez. The Allahabad High Court judgement of June 12, 1975 unseated her from parliament for misuse of office during her election to parliament. On June 25, an unnerved Indira Gandhi, imposed the Emergency. When elections were held in 1977, the electorate trounced Indira Gandhi. The coalition woven by JP during the Bihar movement came to power in Delhi as the Janata Party under Morarji Desai. A.B. Vajpayee, L.K. Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi became ministers. Indian politics had taken a turn it was not going to recover from soon.

Church attack: Haley for death penalty
W
hile one IndianAmerican Republican governor sought to lay a healing salve after the horrific mass shooting at a historic American church, another chose to take cheap political pot shots at President Barack Obama. A day after the shooting at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston in South Carolina, the state’s Indian-American Governor Nikki Haley said the community is beginning to recover. “I think there was shock, and then I think there was anger, and then I think there was grief. But the one thing that we know is as soon as the suspect was found and they had him back in custody, the best part about it is now we can start to heal,” she said on June 19 CBS This Morning. Louisiana’s Indian-American Governor Bobby Jindal, on the other hand, sought to bat for the powerful gun lobby, calling Obama’s sombre reflection that the US must eventually reckon with all too frequent mass shootings and gun violence as “completely

Church attack revives gurdwara memory WASHINGTON: The shooting in a historic US church has come to haunt those who lost their dear ones in a similar traumatic attack about three years ago by a White supremacist in a Wisconsin state gurdwara, killing six Indian-origin people. “It’s very similar to what happened in Oak Creek,” FOX6 News quoted Amar Kaleka, who lost his father in the Sikh temple shooting, as saying. On August 5, 2012, Wade Page entered the Sikh temple of Wisconsin
and began shooting indiscriminately. He killed six worshipers, including Satwant Singh Kaleka, who was the temple president. Page later committed suicide.

Nazar Singh, who had nine children, 34 grandchildren and 63 great-grandchildren, died in the early hours of June 20 in India, Daily Mail reported on June 23. He was born in Punjab in 1904 and was a resident in England for 50 years, moving in 1989 to the North East to live with one of his
nine children. He died in the early hours of June 23 in India, having traveled over to spend time with family, said his grandson Harvinder Gill, from Ashbrooke, Sunderland. “He was an incredible chap,” Gill was quoted as saying. “He has lived a very happy and fulfilling life. For the past few weeks he has been suffering with a few illnesses. He has had pneumonia but he was a fighter. Unfortunately, his time has passed. It was early hours on Saturday, just before Fathers’ Day,” he added.
WASHINGTON: One hundred and fifty years after the end of the American civil war, South Carolina’s Indian-American governor Nikki Haley finally added her powerful voice to growing demands for removing the rebel Confederate flag from the State Capitol. Public pressure to remove the red flag with a blue diagonal cross with 13 white stars representing the secessionist states breaking away from the American Union over the issue of slavery peaked after the horrific massacre in a historic black church in Charleston last week. Hundreds marched in South Carolina over the weekend seeking removal of the Confederate flag from its perch after Dylan Roof. The 21-year-old white man who allegedly came to the church “to shoot black people” and “start a race war”, was seen in photographs with a gun waving the flag. “Today we are here in a moment of unity in our state without ill will to say it is time to remove the flag from our capitol grounds,” said Haley, daughter of Sikh immigrant parents from India and the state’s first non-white governor.
WASHINGTON: As the white young man who killed nine people at a historic US black church faced a court, many victims’ families forgave him, but South Carolina’s Indian American governor Nikki Haley sought the death penalty for him. Born in Punjab but raised in this west coast seaport city of British Columbia state, Rai has been serving the department for the past 25 years. “I’m proud for my father because he was another unsung hero. As an immigrant, he encouraged his kids to stay on the right path. And 25 years later, I’m standing here,” the report quoted Rai as saying at a press conference. “I just wanted to come out and catch criminals and put them in jail... Never in my mind did I

162 civilians killed in coalition bombings against IS in Syria DAMASCUS: At least 162 civilians have been killed since September last year when the U.S.-led international coalition started to carry out bombing raids against Islamic State positions in Syria, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on June 23. According to the latest figures released by Observatory, 2,896 people, including civilians and militants, were killed since the beginning of the airstrikes on September 23, 2014.
Civilian fatalities included 52 children and 35 women, mostly in bombings against oil facilities under IS control in al-Hasakah, Deir al-Zour, alRaqqa, Aleppo and Idlib, all in northern Syria. The Britain-based rights group also highlighted the slaughter committed by the international coalition between April 30 and May 1 in the village of Bir Mahali in Aleppo, where at least 64 people were killed. Meanwhile, IS suffered at least
2,628 casualties, mostly foreign fighters. Additionally, at least 105 members of al-Nusra Front, the branch of Al Qaeda in Syria, were killed in airstrikes by the international coalition that targeted its barracks in Aleppo and Idlib cities. One of the victims was a rebel from an anti-IS Syrian group who was killed in an international coalition bombing raid against an IS military base where he was being held captive in Madan.

WikiLeaks on June 23 began publishing Espionnage Elysee, a collection of top secret intelligence reports and technical documents from NSA concerning targeting and signals intelligence intercepts of the communications of high-level officials from successive French governments over the last ten years, Xinhua news agency reported. “The documents also contain the ‘selectors’ from the target list, detailing the cell phone numbers of numerous officials in the Elysee up to and including the direct cell phone of the President,” the press release said. According to WikiLeaks, the to-be-published documents are intelligence summaries of
conversations between French government officials concerning some of the most pressing issues facing France and the international community. “The French people have a right to know that their elected government is subject to hostile surveillance from a supposed ally,” said WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, adding that “French readers can expect more timely and important revelations in the near future”.

The allegations of phone tapping were made after a television channel in Hyderabad on June 7 aired an audio tape of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s
purported telephonic conversation with Telangana’s nominated legislator Elvis Stephenson. Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader and Telangana legislator Revanth Reddy was arrested by Telangana’s Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on May 31 while he tried to bribe Stephenson to induce him to vote for TDP-BJP candidate in legislative council election.

So, a student satellite programme is the perfect fit to rally the resources of any engineering educational institution,” said Arun Surendran, strategic director of the Trinity Engineering College. “We would like to do a program at the Trinity that can continuously create Cubesats (a miniature satellite for space research with volume of one liter and mass no more than 1.33 kg and is made of commercially available off-the-shelf components) and Nanosats (artificial satellite with a mass ratio between one and 10 kg) over the years.” “For each group of students graduating out of the team, we will add freshers so that the team strength stays nearly constant,” added Surendran. The project is sponsored by Oman-based Al Adrak company.
Meanwhile, Andhra’s police chief J. V. People were seen greeting each other on the beginning of the holy month. Mosques were decked up and illuminated. The activity began late evening with the devout offering ‘namaz-etaraweeh’ or special prayers at mosques. Huffaz (those who memorize holy Quran) led the prayers.
The fast began the next day. The historic Mecca Masjid near Charminar, Shahi Masjid Public Gardens, Jama Masjid Chowk, Masjid-e-Alia Gun Foundry, Azizia Masjid and other mosques witnessed huge congregations. Shopping of groceries and other items for the month continued till late night. Many families prefer to do their shopping for ‘Eid’ before the holy month to avoid rush. For Muslims, who constitute about 30 percent of Hyderabad’s nine million population, Ramadan is a month-long festival. The city witnesses unprecedented economic activity during the month.

Sitting down leads to increased anxiety Increase in sedentary behavior is associated with an increased risk of anxiety, studies show IANS, MELBOURNE
I
f you are in a sitting job, you are more likely to suffer from anxiety as a new report shows that low-energy activities that involve sitting down are associated with an increased risk of anxiety. These activities, which include watching TV, working at a computer or playing electronic games are called sedentary behavior. Anxiety is a mental health illness that affects more than 27 million people. Earlier studies have shown a link between sedentary behavior and physical health problems like obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and osteoporosis. But there has been little research into the link between sedentary
behavior and mental health. This is the first systematic review to examine the relationship between anxiety and sedentary behavior. “Our research showed that evidence is available to suggest a positive association between sitting time and anxiety symptoms. How-
Anxiety is a mental health illness that affects more than 27 million people ever, the direction of this relationship still needs to be determined through longitudinal and interventional studies,” said lead researcher Megan Teychenne, lecturer at Deakin University’s Centre for
Physical Activity and Nutrition Research (C-PAN) in Australia. Researchers analysed the results of nine studies that specifically examined the association between sedentary behavior and anxiety. It was found in five of the nine studies that an increase in sedentary behavior was associated with an increased risk of anxiety. In four of the studies it was found that total sitting time was associated with increased risk of anxiety. The evidence about screen time (TV and computer use) was less strong but one study did find that 36 percent of high school students who had more than two hours of screen time were more likely to experience anxiety compared to those who had less than two hours.
orget thinking about looking fat and short in a sari. Go for lightweight fabrics and small prints as it will help you look slimmer, says an expert. Vineet Chhajer, director, Vineet Sarees, has shared some tips on how to look slender yet stylish in a sari: l Go for lightweight fabrics like Chiffon, Georgette and Crepe. as they stick to the body and make you look slimmer. l Opt for small prints, motifs or lighter prints as they look elegant and pretty. l Bigger or broader borders make you look short. For those who don’t want that, should go for slimmer borders or no border at all. l Go for darker shades or dark monochromatic colors as they make you look slimmer and make your skin color appear lighter. l Draping a sari neatly ensures that you look slimmer and conceal the not-soperfect areas. Pinning up your sari pallu in a sleek and neat manner is also another style that gives you a slim look.

ant your skin to glow and hair to look flawless during rainy season? Learn skin and haircare hacks from experts to combat damage during monsoon season. SKINCARE: Healthy-looking, and flawless skin is a result of continuous and careful attention given to it. While facials and occasional clean-up sessions do contribute to your skin’s health, Lakme Skin Expert Natasha Nischol shares why it is vital to adapt a diligent skin routine in the long run. “Today, we have easy access to modern skincare options. But I believe that some classics can do
wonders for your skin. For my own skin, I have always relied on the simple three steps of cleansing, toning and moisturizing (CTM). “The CTM regime is not just uncomplicated, but also the most effective in achieving glossy, flawless skin,” she said. Here’s a quick guide to make this
CTM regime your own: Start with cleansing your face with a foaming face. Use a facial foam that suits all skin types and helps removes impurities. v Follow this up with an alcoholfree toner as it assists in removing excess oil. A toner that is especially designed to tighten v
pores and remove impurities is recommended for a smoother and hydrated skin. v Conclude your skin care ritual with a hydrating moisturizer. An absolute essential for any skincare regime, the moisturizer forms a layer between your skin and the outside atmosphere so that your skin doesn’t feel dry or look dull. v Investing just five to seven minutes daily on taking care of your skin will help you achieve a gorgeous glossiness that cannot go ignored. HAIRCARE: Shailesh Moolya, national creative director - Hair, Lakme Salon said that “Due to the nature of our climate, especially in the monsoon,
there is excess oil production in the scalp, leading to oily hair. The heightened moisture makes tresses look limp and dull. Apart from this, dandruff, hair loss and even lice are recurring hair problems that occur during the rainy season. It is extremely important to take good care of your hair during this season.” Moolya suggests keep dry and split ends at bay with the right hair cut for the season. Get styled to perfection with a shorter haircut as it is easier to dry and manage. “To get rid of the dullness in hair and to restore the hair’s moisture balance, indulge in a Moroccan Hair Spa. Not only does it maintain the ph level balance, but also leaves hair rejuvenated,” he shared.

Singh has earlier directed films like The Fall and Immortals.
Kareena about her reason for not doing Shuddhi. “I agreed because Hrithik was in the film. And eventually he didn’t do the film,” said Kareena. The 49-year-old actor also noted that Kareena had already opted out of the film when he agreed to do the film. Shuddhi, being helmed by Karan Malhotra, also stars Alia Bhatt. Meanwhile, Salman is also gearing up for Sooraj Barjatya’s Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. Earlier, Varun Dhawan, who has been repeatedly questioned about replacing Salman Khan in Shuddhi, wonders who said that he is stepping into the Dabangg star's shoes for the film. “Never was it said and never have I said that I am replacing Salman b h a i , ” Varun told IANS.
Harshali real star of ‘Bajrangi...’: Kareena MUMBAI: Since the launch of the teaser of Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan, a little girl has caught the fancy of fans. This girl appeared in the teaser before powerhouses Salman and Kareena Kapoor Khan, which proves how crucial she is to the plot of the film. Kareena said the girl was the “real star of the film” and she didn’t mind it. This girl is Harshali Malhotra and Kareena is floored by her. “Harshali is amazing and director Kabir Khan might have had a daunting task to find someone as talented as her. She is a wonderful actress.” “When she didn’t want to shoot for 2-3 hours, we wouldn’t shoot. With kids, it’s anyways difficult to shoot,” Kareena said.
Nargis feels ‘blessed’ to work with Melissa NEW DELHI: Nargis Fakhri has shared screen space with Oscar-nominated actress Melissa McCarthy in her first crossover project Spy. Elated by the opportunity, the actress says it was a privilege to team up with the Hollywood icon. “Being able to work alongside such a talented and influential actor as Melissa in my first Hollywood movie is a moment I feel blessed to have had,” Nargis told IANS in an email interaction from New York. The Rockstar fame actress can be seen jumping over cars in the film’s trailer as she plays an agent from a terrorist group who is on a mission to seal a deal over a nuke bomb. In the trailer of the Paul Feig-directorial, Nargis is also seen embroiled into a funny food fight scene. She points out that she had a lot of fun while shooting the fight sequence for the action comedy. “She (McCarthy) was great around the set and our chemistry on screen made our fight scene really special,” Fakhri added.
ABCD 2: No more than collage of electrifying dances
A
BCD 2 is motivational dance film with a tinge of patriotism thrown in. Everyone makes mistakes in life, but “Life is all about the next step,” sums up director Remo D’Souza. The film is inspired by the trials and tribulations of ‘The Fictitous Group’, a dance group from Nalasopara, a suburb in the outskirts of Mumbai. ABCD 2 showcases the journey of the Mumbai Stunners, a local dance group, from a television reality show to the World Starz - Hip Hop Competition, in Las Vegas. Helmed by Suresh aka Suru (Varun Dhawan), the team is disqualified from the TV show on grounds of plagiarising the hip-hop dance of a renowned group from Philippines. Branded as “cheaters”,
Film: ABCD 2; Language: Hindi; Cast: Varun Dhawan, Shraddha Kapoor, Prabhudeva, Lauren Gottlieb, Dharmesh Yelande, Raghav Juyal, Sushant Pujari, Punit Pathak and Tisca Chopra; Director: Remo D’Souza; Rating: **1/2 scorned by everyone, the team disintegrates. It is only his childhood friends and co-dancers Vinnie (Shraddha Kapoor), Vernon, Raghu and Jack who stay back. Dejected and low on self-esteem, a guilt-ridden Suresh learns about the World Hip-Hop Competition in Las Vegas and tries convincing his friends that participating in this
competition is their only chance to win back their lost prestige. A chance meeting with a brilliant dancer Vishnu Sir (Prabhudeva), revives his hopes. Since the original team has dispersed, Suresh along
with his friends and Vishnu Sir conduct auditions to form a new team. Dharmesh from Baroda and Vinod, his deaf and mute friend, are selected. Realising their folly, some of the original teammates come back. After qualifying the preliminary round in Bengaluru, the Mumbai Stunners are now ‘Indian Stunners’ as they land in Las Vegas to be a part of the finale. The storyline is superficial. The plot, strewn with spectacular dance sequences, is formulaic and relatable. The script is flowing, but unimaginative. It offers no dramatic moments and the surprises are more of duds. What keeps you glued are the dance pieces, which are wellchoreographed. The skills of the dancers are sure to bowl you over. —Troy Ribeiro

Tamannaah gains weight, not to lose it
The case of Deepika’s title roles
S
tories doing the rounds were that actress Tamannaah Bhatia had to lose weight for her intense fighting scenes in epic drama Baahubali but she says she had to instead gain weight for the film. Present at an event to launch her yoga teacher’s book, Tamannaah said: “Numerous people have a misunderstanding that I lost weight for ‘Baahubali’. But actually I had to put on weight for the film as I’m working with an actor who is six feet, three inches tall. And I was looking a bit too small in front of him and I was supposed to look like a warrior, which is the role I’m playing.” Like how Kareena Kapoor’s “size zero” made news, Tamannaah feels “there is too much obsession over the number of kgs on one’s body nowadays”.
D
eepika Padukone has ruled the box office with title roles in films like Piku and Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, but the actress credits her directors and writers for spinning magic at the box office. The common thread in Deepika’s films like Om Shanti Om, Piku and Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela is that the actress has played the title role in all of them. She is now gearing up for another film with a title role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani. “I give credit to my writers and directors for creating such exciting and challenging parts and helping me make them relatable and memorable for the audiences,” Deepika said in a statement. The actress, who is still basking in the success of Shoojit Sircar’s film Piku, is now gearing up for period drama Bajirao Mastani. The film narrates the story of Maratha Peshwa Bajirao and his second wife Mastani. Deepika will be seen playing Mastani.

YOGA GOES GLOBAL Millions in India, thousands abroad mark International Yoga Day on June 21 hours in 192 countries, organized by the Indian missions and yoga centers. As the sun rose on the globe, the yoga events began kicking off, with the eastern-most countries sending in their pictures. I
t was an unprecedented demonstration of India’s soft power as tens of thousands across the world, besides millions in India, performed yoga on Sunday to mark the inaugural International Day of Yoga (IDY). A record-breaking nearly 36,000 people, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, took part in the main early morning event at Rajpath in the heart of New Delhi. Yoga was performed at events across the world — from New York to Trinidad and Tobago, from the Maldives to Australia, from Tel Aviv to Moscow, from on board Indian naval ships to the heights of Siachen glacier, at schools and in innumerable residential localities — to mark the IDY on June 21. The mega event at Rajpath, the ceremonial boulevard and the surrounding green expanse that connects Rashtrapati Bhavan, the presidential palace on Raisina Hill, with the World War I memorial India Gate, was replicated across state capitals, cities, towns and rural areas in the country. Modi described the event as the start of a new era for training the
human mind for mind-body balance, peace and harmony. Modi, who himself performed the asanas among the crowd of yoga practitioners at Rajpath, said yoga was not only an exercise to make the body flexible but a path for inner development. “It marks a new era of training of human mind for peace and harmony,” said Modi, attired in a fullsleeve loose white shirt and white lowers, with a scarf in the saffron, white and green colors of the Indian flag looped around his neck. Events were held in the morning

In an address at the United Nations, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said the IDY was viewed as a perfect platform to bring the world together in a spirit of unity and harmony. She said yoga was not a religion and should not be seen as belonging to any particular religion. “It is a science, the science of well-being, the science of integrating body, mind and soul, the science of actualizing our true potential.” Among those doing yoga at Rajpath were U.S. Ambassador Richard Verma, Nepal Ambassador Deep Kumar Upadhyay, Afghanistan’s Shaida Mohammad Abdali and members of the foreign diplomatic corps and foreign nationals studying in India. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung and Delhi’s former top cop Kiran Bedi were among the prominent personalities who joined in doing yoga.

School children dressed in red sat with the powerful. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was clad in a plain white yoga-themed track suit. Diplomats, rising in unison to do the asanas, called out by the yoga guru Ravi Shankar of the Art of Living movement. One of IDY's aims is to promote respect for the environment, a topic of great urgency now. Ban quoted from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's UN speech last year: “Yoga is not just about exercise; it is a way to discover the sense of oneness, with yourself, the world and nature.” Symbolically, a monarch butterfly fluttered into the shamiana and hovered over the children getting ready for their yoga practice. The shamiana with a transparent roof had been rigged at the UN plaza because of the rains forecast for the day. There was a thunderstorm the previous night and rain in the morning. Dark clouds hung ominously over the city. But Indra, the god of rain, let Surya, the sun, through just in time for the celebration. The Summer Solstice sun shone on the city as the celebrations got underway at the UN and at the Times Square, where 30,000 people assembled for the second largest yoga performance of the day, second only to

She said she began practising yoga in her native Croatia where it was propagated by Vishwaguru Maheshwarananda. “We promote yoga of health and of inner peace,” she said. “Yoga is the path to inner transformation and the balance it creates leads to the realization that humanity is one.” People of different religions can come together and discover their common humanity for peace, she added. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj emphasized in her speech that yoga was not a religion and should not be seen as belonging to any particular religion. “It is a science,” she said. Fortyseven of the 56 members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation were among those who cosponsored the IDY resolution, and not one opposed it.

Chief guest Najma Heptullah, Indian Union Minister for Minority Affairs, said that Yoga was a way of life and, through meditation, the mind and mental energy are enhanced. longest day. Many state and city office bearers and political aspirants joined the opening ceremony which included State Senator Michael Noland, IL State Senator Christine Winger, Tim Schneider, Cook County Board of Commissioner & Chairman of the Illinois Republic Party, mayor of Burr Ridge Mickey Straub and Oakbrook Mayor Dr Lalmalani. The event was started with lamp lighting to keep pace and theme of harmony and peace in world by Yoga
Foundation. In the afternoon session, volunteers of Hindu Swamyam Sewak Sangh demonstrated the and explained the benefits of Sur ya Namaskar and the Yoga Asanas. Art of Living organization, through Vinesh Virani and Pam Brockman, a wide vsriety of Yoga demonstrations and exercises were explained to audience. The audience grasped the theme of yoga that it brings humality and humor, as correctly said by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.
Yoga Day organizers fall flat The event which was organized in coordination and as per the instructions from Government of India was a total failure and it seemed that it was planned half heartedly. QQ Many weeks of tireless preparations and more than 25 big organizations of Indian community, could only bring close to 500 audiences, even though projection and promises were made to the sponsors and vendors for 2000 participants. QQ Indeed, the event was a bright example of bad leadership and poor management. QQ The event failed to attract and enjoin the mainstream participants. QQ Though Chicagoland has more than 250 Yoga Schools, studios and yoga teachers’ training institutes, operated by many forms and variations of yoga but it seems either none of them was approached as there was no participation from them,. or it was unknown to organizers. Most of the Yoga school, studios and institutes are owned and operated by the communities other than ethnic communities. QQ There was no participation from mainstream news media to spread the word about yoga-- before and after the Yoga day event. The yoga day celebration theme was to spread yoga to all around the globe and it’s not only one ethnic The group yoga practice was demonstrated by volunteers from the Art of Living foundation led by Ms Pam Brockman. She invited the audience to practice with awareness and steadiness. As the volunteers led the audience through a series of basic yoga poses, the experience of yoga far exceeded the discussion of its benefits. The dignitaries practiced with a great deal of enthusiasm. Their humility and simplicity in joining the yoga practice was a testament to what humanitarian leader, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has said about yoga. “ Yoga is something that brings humility and humor, both. And both are your very nature.” The day was filled with photos display of different Yoga Asanas by Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga and by Raja Chowdhury. Many books by different authors on Yoga, a variety of booths and a film screening, along with
Indian community based. QQ IYD- Chicago failed to deliver Global message as no participation from other races or religion was visible. In other cities of USA - New York, San Francisco, Washington DC , Georgia, Houston the day was organized with more than 30,000 participants in New York City with a majority of young generation from mainstream population in contrast, to Chicago QQ On organizing such a failed event, a huge amount of funds and donations were spent, and all in vain. QQ The free, oily lunch which included Pooris, Kachoris, Samosa - deep fried items and sugary drinks, served at the event was the most inappropriate food to serve on Yoga Day. QQ The event was more of a political arena as at one time, as many as 35 dignitaries were on the dais to make their presence felt. QQ Air India was totally ignored this time, too, though the airline carried 2,000 yoga T-shirts free of charge from India. It was brought to the knowledge of Air India officials present at the event. Almost every sponsor and donor was recognized and invited on the stage. separate yoga practice for seniors were also the part of day long Yoga day. Many in audience were enthralled on the invaluable gift of Yoga from India to whole world . The Proclamations of Governor of Illinois, Mayor of Chicago and Cook County Clerk were read at the occasion. Many community leaders also joined the Yoga day celebration which included Nimesh Jani, Babu Patel , Kanti Patel, Keerthi Ravoori, Raja Krishnamoorthi, Beena and Neil Patel, Harendra Mangrolia, Sunil Shah, Moin Moon Khan and Nirav Patel expressed their gratitude towards the efforts of Govt of India in making Yoga an International event and declaration by UNO - the 21st June as International Yoga Day. The message of PM of India was also read and making Raj Path to Yoga Path was applauded by audience.

AAP will be a force to reckon with in Punjab: AAP Leader Adarsh Shashtri
BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL - Mr. Adarsh Shastri, Member of Delhi Legislative Assembly from AAM Aadmi Party (AAP), was in Chicago on a personal visit and held a meeting with Volunteers of AAP Chicago chapter on Friday June 12th at Dr Munish Raizada’s residence, to provide update on progress been made by Delhi state Government and some of struggles being faced by state from hostile central government of India. He shared future plans of party for engagement with NRI community which has provided a significant contribution in astronomical rise seen by the party since it was launched in 2013. It’s been a surreal experience for the party to come to the power in state of Delhi with 95% of the seats in legislative assembly raising expectations of one and all to change the rotten system of corruption which has plagued not only Delhi but country as a whole. Within 100 days of coming to power, party has delivered on 12 of the 70 promises it had made to people of Delhi. Delhi Anti-Corruption Bureau has already arrested 35 officers in corruption charges and suspended 150 others pending further investigations on complaints made by common citizens of Delhi. This very visible task of going after corrupt has rattled central government and its busy creating roadblocks for Delhi government and its anti-corruption bureau to slow them down. Despite the hurdles being created, state government is busy in delivering what they had promised to people of Delhi. Expectation is there will

be visible changes in condition of Delhi within next 3 years. With Punjab elections due in 2017 party has started working to further strengthen the organization in state of Punjab. Punjab was the only state to return four MPs for AAP to India’s parliament. A dedicated team is already on ground working tirelessly to establish a robust party structure to get us ready assembly elections. In first phase of this effort, team had spent 45 days in Punjab visiting 923 villages with one on one interaction with 8500 party volunteers. Phase II is underway as we speak. an honest and people centric government. Party has felt the need to have increased engagement with massive pool of NRIs associated with the party. This effort will be led by Dr Kumar Vishwas with help of coconveners Mr. Adarsh Shastri and Dr Munish Raizada. Team is working towards establishing a recognized global volunteer structure. Additionally there are NRI conventions being planned for later in fall this year in UK, Canada & USA. Senior leadership of party is expected to attend these conventions in person. Indian is California’s first state dental director BY A STAFF WRITER ALIFORNIA -- Indian American dentist Dr. Jayanth V. Kumar, DDS, MPH, will serve as California’s new state dental director, a first in the state’s history. Gov. Jerry Brown made the announcement earlier this month. For years, the California Dental Association (CDA) has advocated for a state dental director — the establishment of this position is a major achievement for the state’s oral health program and access to care planning goals. “CDA applauds Gov. Brown’s appointment and is looking forward to collaborating with Dr. Kumar, who will bring together an advisory group of stakeholders to help develop plans for improving oral health in California,”

Atlanta cos in soup for currency fraud BY A STAFF WRITER TLANTA, GA -- Federal authorities want to seize airplanes, homes, luxury cars and beach properties controlled by some Georgia-based corporations dealing in Iraqi currency. In a federal complaint, prosecutors say Atlanta-based Sterling Currency Group LLC is among the largest sellers of the Iraqi dinar. Prosecutors say the business is built on what they describe as a scam to defraud investigators hoping to cash in on a “revaluation” of the currency. In the recently unsealed, 48-page complaint, prosecutors say company representatives spread false information in predicting the dinar would rise sharply in value. No arrests have been made in the case, which seeks the forfeiture of assets controlled by Sterling and associated companies.
A
Dr. Jayanth V. Kumar
said CDA President Walt Weber. According to the CDPH, Dr Kumar will direct and manage the oral health program in the CDPH and, in collaboration with the Department of Health Care Services, provide leadership in developing and implementing innovative strategies and policies to reduce oral health disparities in California. In addition to a state oral health plan, Dr Kumar will also be responsible for establishing prevention and oral health education projects and working to secure funding for preventionfocused oral health programs, particularly for children. He directed oral disease prevention and control activities, including New York’s statewide fluoridation program serving more than 12.9 million residents.
The California Dental Association is the non-profit organization representing organized dentistry in California. Founded in 1870, CDA’s membership consists of more than 26,000 dentists, making it the largest constituent of the American Dental Association. Dental disease is the most common chronic childhood disease, more common than both asthma and obesity, affecting nearly two-thirds of California’s children by the time they reach third grade. It is one of the top reasons children are absent from school. Dr Kumar has experience obtaining competitive grants from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Health Resources and Services Administration.
Ohio Muslim is arrested on terrorism-related charges BY A STAFF WRITER LEVELAND, OH-- An Ohio man who authorities say had pledged allegiance to ISIS via Facebook and encouraged others to commit acts of terrorism in the United States, was arrested on terrorismrelated charges near Cleveland on June 19. Amir Said Abdul Rahman Al-Ghazi was arrested without incident in North Olmsted, Ohio, Stephen D. Anthony, Special Agent-in-Charge of the FBI’s Cleveland division and US Attorney Stephen Dettelbach said in a joint press release. Al-Ghazi, who legally changed his name from Robert C. McCollum in 2015, swore allegiance to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi numerous times on Facebook. The 38-year-old suspect “made multiple online statements through his social media profiles for inciting others to commit violent jihad in the US” and stated his desire to commit terrorist acts himself. “Today’s charges are a stark reminder
C
Abdul Rahaman Al-Ghazi
that the radical and dangerous philosophies espoused by groups such as ISIL can be spread in our community through computers and social media,” Dettelbach said. The release said the terror suspect drew the attention of federal authorities as early as 2012, when the FBI was alerted to “violent extremist content” on a Facebook page owned by al-Ghazi, which in turn
sparked further investigation by the Joint Terrorism Task Force. The investigation found that alGhazi owned numerous social media profiles. “The Islamic State is our caliphate like it or not,” al-Ghazi wrote in one social media post. “What you all don’t get is that we Sunni Muslims love Allah and his prophet more than we love our mothers. We are all Islamic state citizens. This isn’t some gang in the desert you’re fighting. This is ww3 (sic) the beginning has just begun,” another post read. The federal release also said alGhazi had taken “substantial steps” toward creating ISIS propaganda videos, which he planned to post on the internet. He also was in contact with two people he believed to be associated with the ISIS terror group, according to the release. Al-Ghazi was also charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and distribution of a controlled substance.
