US-Russia ‘secret meeting’ Blackwater founder held the meeting, convened by the UAE, around January 11 — nine days before Trump’s inauguration — in the Seychelles islands IANS, WASHINGTON

C

ontroversial Blackwater founder Erik Prince acted as a back-channel go-between for President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to a report. The meeting, convened by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), took place around January 11 - nine days before Trump’s inauguration in the Seychelles islands, The Washington Post said in a report published this week citing US, European and Arab officials. Though the full agenda remains unclear, the UAE agreed to broker the meeting in part to explore whether Russia could be persuaded to curtail its relationship with Iran, including in Syria. Officials said that Prince represented himself as an emissary for then President-elect Trump for the meeting in the Seychelles, though both he and the administration

Obama admin official accused of ‘crime’ WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump accused an official of the Obama administration of committing a crime by asking to “unmask” the names of Trump’s associates in intelligence documents, media reports said. Speaking to The New York Times on this week, Trump said former White House National Security Adviser Susan Rice may have committed a crime when requesting to unmask the names of Trump’s associates, and called this “the biggest story”. Trump offered no evidence to back his allegations or any names of other Obama administration officials he said were also involved. He did not suggest that his assertions came from new intelligence reports but said he would explain himself further “at the right time.” In response, Erin Pelton, a spokesperson for Rice, told CNN: “I’m not going to dignify the President’s ludicrous charge with a comment.” It was revealed recently that during her time as government official, Rice requested names in intelligence documents detailing communications of the Trump transition team to be “unmasked”. These names are usually redacted or even given vague descriptors like ‘Male 1’. —IANS

deny it. Prince, the brother of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, was an avid supporter of Trump. After the Republican convention, he contributed $250,000 to Trump’s

campaign. He founded the Blackwater firm that became a private security provider for the US government in Iraq. He has ties to people in Trump’s circle, including

Stephen K. Bannon, now serving as the President’s Chief Strategist and senior counsellor. He was also seen in the Trump transition offices in New York in

55% Americans approve of Obamacare IANS, WASHINGTON

F

ormer US President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act is more popular now than it was on Election Day, despite President Trump and the GOP’s efforts to dismantle it, a poll said. Nearly 55 per cent of Americans now support Obamacare or the Affordable Care Act, up from 42 per cent in November, a new Gallup Poll found. This is the first time that a majority of Americans have approved of the health reform law since November 2012, CNN

Barack Obama

Money reported. The Gallup poll results are more positive than some other polls, though all have shown an uptick in support of the law

since the election. According to Gallup, Americans’ view of Obamacare are split along party lines, though all groups view the law more favorably now. Some 86 per cent of Democrats and 57 per cent of independents approve it, while 17 per cent of Republicans do. But, in November, only 7 per cent of Republicans felt this way. Most Americans want to keep the law, but many want to see changes made. About 26 per cent want Obamacare to remain as is, but 40 per cent think it needs “significant changes.”

December, The Washington Post report said. The US officials said the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has been scrutinizing the Seychelles meeting as part of a broader probe of Russian interference in the 2016 US election and alleged contacts between associates of Putin and Trump. However, the FBI has declined to comment. “We are not aware of any meetings, and Erik Prince had no role in the transition,” Sean Spicer, the White House press secretary, said in response on April 2. A Prince spokesman said in a statement: “Erik had no role on the transition team. This is a complete fabrication. The meeting had nothing to do with President Trump. Why is the so-called underresourced intelligence community messing around with surveillance of American citizens when they should be hunting terrorists?”

Trump donates first salary to Park Service WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump donated the first quarter of his presidential salary — a total of $78,333 — to the National Park Service, the White House announced. At his daily press briefing, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer displayed the check with Trump’s donation and handed it to Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke, Efe news reported. The National Park Service is tasked with maintaining the country’s national parks and monuments.

Abe welcomes Trump’s tough stance on N. Korea IANS, TOKYO

J

apanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has welcomed US President Donald Trump’s tough stance on North Korea and appreciated Washington’s position of keeping all options open to deal with Pyongyang. The two leaders spoke on the phone for 35 minutes this week, a day after North Korea launched a ballistic missile towards the Sea of Japan, broadcaster NHK reported. During the conversation, Abe and Trump also stressed that China has a key role in persuading North Korea to put an end to its missile and nuclear weapons programmes.

Shinzo Abe and Donald Trump spoke on the phone for 35 minutes this week.

Their conversation comes as Trump prepares for his first bilateral meeting with his Chinese coun-

terpart Xi Jinping this week. Abe said that he told Trump that Japan is paying close attention to

how China handles the issue of North Korea. “(We) agreed that yesterday’s missile launch by North Korea was a dangerous act and a grave threat to (Japan’s) security,” added Abe. North Korea has stepped up its weapons programme since Kim Jong-un assumed power five years ago, conducting a record number of nuclear and missile tests in 2016, and underscoring his regime’s decision to use nuclear deterrence to ensure its survival. North Korea recently warned South Korea and the US against any attempt to stage a “special operation” to hit the Pyongyang leadership and military installations.

Dalai Lama’s Arunachal visit: India, China in war of words

China considers large parts of Arunachal Pradesh as south Tibet, while India has said that Arunachal is an inseparable part of its territory IANS, NEW DELHI/BEIJING

C

hina on Wednesday reacted angrily to the Dalai Lama’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh and said that by ignoring Beijing’s concerns over the issue New Delhi has caused “serious damage” to bilateral ties. India reiterated that no political color should be attributed to the Tibetan spiritual leader’s visit to the northeastern state. Diplomatic tensions escalated with Beijing summoning the Indian envoy Vijay Gokhale to lodge its protest, even as the 81-year-old Tibetan leader, who arrived in Arunachal Pradesh on Tuesday, said in Bomdila that India has never used him against China. In a prelude to China’s belliger-

Three arrested in Alwar lynching case JAIPUR: Three persons were arrested in connection with the death of a Muslim man who was brutally beaten up by cow vigilantes in Rajasthan’s Alwar district, police said on Thursday. “We have arrested three persons in connection with the case under Section 302 (dealing with murder) of the Indian Penal Code while search for six others named in the first information report (FIR) is going on,” a police official told IANS. “We have identified the three on the basis of a video footage”, he added. Pehlu Khan, in his fifties, died from his injuries late Monday night in a hospital where he was admitted for treatment. The incident took place last week on Saturday when as many as 15 persons were allegedly transporting cows illegally. Khan and others were injured when a mob attacked two of the vans transporting cows, police said. There were six vans. “We have also registered a case related to cow smuggling against 10 persons,” the official added. Meanwhile, Rajasthan Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria said both parties are at fault. “In our state, cow smuggling is an offense,” the minister said. “Police asked the people transporting cows to show legal papers, but they did not show it to them,” he added. Kataria said “stopping cow smuggling is right but it is not right to take law in own hands”.

ence, the Chinese state-run media warned that New Delhi’s inviting the Tibetan spiritual leader to the “sensitive region” would “gravely damage” India-China relations.

China considers large parts of Arunachal Pradesh as south Tibet, while India has said that Arunachal is an inseparable part of its territory.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying, addressing a regular briefing, voiced Beijing’s “firm opposition” to the Dalai Lama’s visit and said her country would lodge “stern representations with the Indian side”. India on Wednesday reiterated that no political color should be attributed to the Tibetan spiritual leader’s trip and that the Dalai Lama has visited Arunachal earlier on half a dozen occasions. “We also urged that no political color be ascribed to his religious and spiritual activities and to his visits to states of India, and no artificial controversy created around his ongoing visit,” External Ministry spokesperson Gopal Baglay said. On Tuesday, India asked China not to interfere in its matters.

RBI maintains key lending rate MUMBAI: With inflationary concerns in mind, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), in its first bi-monthly monetary policy review of 2017-18, on Thursday kept its key lending rate unchanged at 6.25 percent, saying it awaited further macroeconomic data before making any changes. The RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) kept the repurchase (repo) rate, or the short-term lending rate it charges on borrowings by commercial banks, unchanged for the third consecutive time at 6.25 percent. However, the MPC decided to narrow the policy rate corridor by 25 basis points. The corridor is the difference between the repo and reverse repo rate. A narrow corridor is expected to check money flow into the banking system and to drain out additional liquidity. The adjustment automatically hiked the reverse repo rate under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) to six percent. Conversely, RBI maintained the cash reserve ratio (CRR), or the quantum of liquid funds which commercial banks have to keep, at 4 percent.

UP clears Rs 363.59 bn loan waiver for farmers Crackdown on illegal abattoirs will continue

he Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday cleared a Rs 363.59-billion proposal allowing waiver of loans for marginal and small farmers of the state. The decision was taken at the first cabinet meeting of the BJP government, presided over by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday denied any “overzealous” crackdown by authorities on abattoirs in the state and stated there would be no compromise on illegal slaughterhouses. Health minister Siddharth Nath Singh, who briefed the media after a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, said that action will be taken against all illegal abattoirs in the state.

and marginal. The waiver by the state government applies to loans taken by these farmers against seeds for wheat and paddy crops, besides pesticides and fertilizers. The waiver would apply to loan amounts of Rs 100,000. Singh also said that there were around seven lakh farmers who defaulted on loans taken and now bore the non-performing asset tag. The government has also decided to write off all their loans, amounting to Rs 56.30 billion. In all, the loan waiver amount cleared by the state cabinet is to the tune of Rs 363.59 billion, he said.

D

elhi Congress president Ajay Maken on Thursday demanded the resignation of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over the Shunglu Committee report that has accused the Delhi government of nepotism in making appointments and abuse of power. Maken demanded that an inquiry should be launched to probe the matter on the basis of the findings of the Shunglu Committee report. “If Arvind Kejriwal has any conscience left then he should immediately resign from the Chief Minister’s post,” Maken told reporters. NEW DELHI: Noted lawyer Ram Jethmalani declared on Tuesday that he will fight the defamation case filed by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for free. Jethmalani made the comments after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) denounced the Delhi government’s decision to pay a bill of Rs 3.4 crore to the lawyer from the public exchequer. A former BJP MP, Jethmalani said he was more keen to legally fight Jaitley — money or no money. —IANS

Prejudice and violence

against Africans tarnish India’s image The recurring singling out of Africans and the people from the northeast by anti-social elements has underlined the need for combating this menace at both the administrative and social levels AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

T

he continued presence of insensate prejudice and brutal violence in public life has again been highlighted by the recent attacks on African students in Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh, a township near New Delhi. With its well-kept and well-lit roads, bustling malls and shopping arcades and rows of high-rise residential complexes, Greater Noida — like Gurugram in Haryana — is typical of a booming India whose affluent citizenry have been compared by Nobel laureate Amartya Sen with the denizens of California. There have been far too many incidents of mob violence in recent months to be brushed aside as the occasional rampages of hooligans which can be controlled by stricter policing. Evidently, a deep personal and societal flaw is at work. The sprawling metropolises where these acts of depredations take place are too large for the victims to feel safe. Hence, the advice is to African students by an association of students from the continent to stay indoors for some time.

There have been far too many incidents of mob violence in recent months to be brushed aside.

But such a precautionary measure is hardly feasible in the long run considering that there are an estimated 1,500 African students in India. They need, therefore, to go to their academic institutions apart from visiting friends. However, they do not feel safe not only while going about their daily business but also where they stay

since the landlords are generally wary and disdainful about their presence. The incident in October 2015, when a Delhi government minister urged the police in Delhi’s Khirki area to raid a flat without warrant to check whether the Africans living there were taking drugs was an example of how biases and preconceived notions drive some Indians.

In Greater Noida, for instance, the suspicion that a 16-year-old boy died of an overdose of drugs given to him by his Nigerian friends led to the latter being beaten up by a gang of thugs. Not only that, the rowdies even invaded the flat where the Nigerians stayed to check whether they had kept human flesh in their

refrigerator. Subsequently, a Nigerian told a TV interviewer about the belief among some Indians that the Africans are cannibals. If Greater Noida saw the latest incident of violence against Africans, Bengaluru, the vaunted Silicon valley of India, was an earlier scene of unchecked mob rule when a 21-year-old Tanzanian woman was assaulted and stripped when she inadvertently came to an accident site where a Sudanese man in a car had run over a local woman. The fact that the whites are very rarely targeted in a similar fashion although women may be subjected to indecent attention is evidence of the racist factor involving Africans. It might be expected that at least cities like Delhi and Bengaluru with their greater exposure to foreign travellers and their varied lifestyles would not display the kind of primitive insularity which can manifest itself with sudden violence at short notice. But the recurring singling out of Africans and the people from the northeast by anti-social elements has underlined the need for combating this menace at both the administrative and social levels if the country’s reputation is to be saved.

Going gets tough for Akhilesh Yadav as gloves off in SP Leaders admit that Akhilesh was not only “still brash” but was also behaving “immaturely” despite the UP election debacle MOHIT DUBEY, LUCKNOW

T

he gloves are finally off in the Samajwadi Party (SP), which was badly mauled by the Bharatiya Janata Party in the recent state elections. Although he sidelined both his father Mulayam Singh Yadav and uncle Shivpal Singh in the run-up to the polls, former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav now finds himself in the line of fire with more and more voices in the party questioning his leadership. While party founder Mulayam vent his anger against Akhilesh at a private event last week in the family bastion Mainpuri, saying that one who could not be loyal to his father cannot be loyal to anyone, Shivpal Singh has now targeted his nephew for his “arrogance”. A former PWD Minister, Shivpal

had maintained a studied silence since being sacked as the state unit chief and also being called names by Akhilesh during the poll campaign. But he has now voiced the opinion that “people who do not respect their elders never flourish”. “The electoral outcome has shown that neta-ji and mantri-ji

give up the party post in favor of his father. Still belligerent, the younger Yadav barred the 47 party legislators from going to a dinner hosted by Mulayam last week, forcing its eventual cancellation. Leaders in the party have privately begun to admit that Akhilesh was not only

While party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav vent his anger against Akhilesh at a private event last week, Shivpal Singh has now targeted him for his “arrogance” (Shivpal) were better at handling the organization than bhaiyya-ji (Akhilesh),” said a former minister. the go-between between the two warring sides, has also begun maintaining a distance from Yadav junior after he was sidelined and Ram Govind Chowdhary was named as the Leader of the Opposition in the assembly. The anger of Azam Khan can be gauged from the fact that he and his son Abdullah — a first-time legislator from Swar — have so far not taken oath as legislators even as most of the members have done so. Sources say Azam Khan is also of “changed opinion” that the party

needed “veterans in the thick of things” to salvage its lost pride. The SP’s decision to contest the civic polls in the national capital has also not gone down well with the rank and file, which feel that at the time “you should be introspecting at the debacle” any further embarrassment at the hustings could intensify internal rumblings. Akhilesh, for now, has announced a new membership drive to be taken up from April 15 and has said that the election process of the national president will be completed by September end.

Trump for India-Pak peace Nikki Haley, the US Permanent Representative to the UN, says the US President Donald Trump may get involved in a process for peace between India and Pakistan

Delhi snubs Washington offer to de-escalate tensions with Pak

‘This is how my Sikh parents raised me’ UNITED NATIONS: A Punjabi may be out of Punjab, but Punjab is never out of her. Nikki Haley, the outspoken US ambassador to the UN, says if she comes out sounding strong, it’s because that’s how she was raised by her parents, who are Sikhs from Punjab. She does her “job to the best of my abilities and if that comes out blunt, comes out strong, I am one of two brothers and a sister and my parents raised us all to be strong,” she said at a news conference. Her father Ajit Singh Randhwa, is from Amritsar district. He is an agriculture science professor. Her mother is Raj Kaur Randhwa. One of her brothers, Mitti Randhwa, was an Army officer who saw action in Operation Desert Storm, 1990-91, leading a company tasked with finding chemical weapons. Just over two months into her office as the first Indian American to be appointed to a cabinet-level position, she has made waves by calling a spade a spade, if not a shovel, in an arena where a diplomat may delicately call it a spoon. She has called the UN Human Rights Council “corrupt”, the UN of being a partner of a “corrupt” government, and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad a “war criminal”, and declared she was free to “beat up on Russia”.

NEW DELHI/WASHINGTON: India snubbed the US’ offer to help deescalate tensions with Pakistan, saying that its position on bilateral redressal of all issues between the two neighbors has not changed. It also said that the international community needs to address the issue of terrorism emanating from Pakistan. “Government’s position for bilateral redressal of all India-Pakistan issues in an environment free of terror and violence hasn’t changed,” Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Gopal Baglay said.

“We, of course, expect the international community and organizations to enforce international mechanisms and mandates concerning terrorism emanating from Pakistan, which continues to be the single biggest threat to peace and stability in our region and beyond,” he said. The reaction came after Nikki Haley said that the US was concerned about the state of India-Pakistan relations and President Donald Trump himself might get involved in a peace process between the two South Asian antagonists.

T

he US is concerned about the state of India-Pakistan relations and President Donald Trump himself may get involved in a peace process between the two South Asian antagonists, Nikki Haley, the US Permanent Representative to the UN. “This administration is concerned about the relationship between India and Pakistan and very much wants to see how we deescalate any sort of conflict going forward,” Haley, who holds a cabinet rank in the Trump administration, said. “I would expect that the administration going to be in talks and

try and find its place to be part of that (process).” She added, “And also wouldn’t be surprised if the President participates as well.” India has opposed external involvement in bilateral issues with Pakistan. During his campaign in 2016, Trump had offered to mediate between India and Pakistan, but was careful to add that it was only if the two nations wanted him to. In an interview to The Hindustan Times he said that he “would be honored” to be a moderator. “I think if they wanted me to, I would love to be the mediator or arbitrator.” Haley was answering a question from a reporter at her news confer-

ence on assuming the presidency of the Security Council for the month of April. The reporter pointed out that India does not want an interlocutor for talks with Pakistan, while Islamabad wanted the US or another country to facilitate talks between them and asked if the US would get the leaders of the two countries to talk. With Secretary of State Rex Tillerson keeping a low public profile and generally avoiding the media, Haley is emerging as the public face of US diplomacy making her presence felt in the media aided by her cabinet status. Her statement about India-Pakistan relations, therefore, assume importance and it is the first high-level Trump

administration statement on India’s relations with Pakistan. While it is not clear what steps the US could take, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to meet Trump in Washington in May when the two could discuss it. Former President Barack Obama also had said during his 2008 campaign that the US should mediate the Kashmir dispute. The offer met with strong opposition in India and he did not actively follow it up when he became President. “We don’t think we should wait until something happens” Haley said. “We very much think we should be pro-active in what we are seeing, tensions rise and conflicts seem to bubble up and so want to see if we can be a part of that.”

Singapore court has fined an Indian Imam 4,000 Singapore dollars ($2,860) and he will be deported to India for making offensive remarks against Jews and Christians. The Straits Times reported that Nalla Mohamed Abdul Jameel, 46, will have to leave Singapore. A court fined him for making the remarks which he knew were “prejudicial to the maintenance of harmony between religious

groups and was likely to disturb the public tranquillity” in the island state. Nalla admitted to committing the offense on January 6 at the Jamae Chulia Mosque where he was the Chief Imam. After sermon that day, he recited a prayer on his own in Arabic which said: “Grant us help against the Jews and Christians.” The Imam issued a public apology and met leaders of various religious groups after the offensive remark went viral in February, triggering a police probe.

Their number (40,145 or 21.2 percent) increased from 34,874 (18.4 per cent) for 2014-15. According to figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), Australia’s population rose by almost 350,000 to 24.2 million during the fiscal ended September 30, 2016. Gas attack kills 70 in Syria

World leaders, including US President Donald Trump, blamed the Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad for the chemical attack on Tuesday, dubbed deadliest since 2013

‘Attack changed views on Syria’ WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has said the chemical attack against Syrian civilians that killed over 70 people “crossed a lot of lines for me” and changed the way he views Syria and President Bashar al-Assad. “I now have responsibility, and I will have that responsibility and carry it very proudly,” Trump said on Wednesday at a press briefing responding to a question about a White House statement on Tuesday that blamed the attack in part on former President Barack Obama. “It is now my responsibility. It was a great opportunity missed,” CNN quoted Trump as saying. The President condemned the attack as “heinous”. “Yesterday’s (Tuesday) chemical attack was so horrific in Syria against innocent people, including women, small children and even beautiful little babies, their deaths were an affront to humanity,” Trump said. “These heinous actions by the Assad regime cannot be tolerated. The US stands with our allies across the globe to condemn this horrific attack.” —IANS

The UN Commission of Inquiry on Syria said in a statement the use of chemical weapons as well as any deliberate targeting of medical facilities “would amount to war crimes and serious violations of human rights law”. “It is imperative for perpetrators of such attacks to be identified and

The opposition-run Health Department in Idlib province, where the attack took place, said 69 people had died. It provided a list of their dead. The dead were still being identified, and some humanitarian groups said as many as 100 had died.

The Assad government, which renounced chemical weapons nearly four years ago after a large chemical attack that American intelligence agencies concluded was carried out by his forces, denied that his military had been responsible. The attack would mark the deadliest chemical attack in Syria since sarin nerve gas killed some 1,300 civilians in Ghouta in August 2013.

UNITED NATIONS/DAMASCUS: The UN Security Council convened on Wednesday to discuss a draft resolution proposed by the US, Britain and France, which would condemn Damascus for the reported use of chemical weapons in the town of Khan Sheikhoun in Idlib province on Tuesday. It said the document would have to include several amendments, such as calling on the rebels controlling the area to provide full access to UN investigators and setting an unbiased and comprehensive probe into the incident as the primary goal of the resolution. “This draft was penned in haste and adopting it would have been

Shiv Sena MPs surround Civil Aviation Minister over flying ban Gaikwad, who was banned from flying after he assaulted an Air India staff, said that he had been provoked and alleged that the airlines staff misbehaved with him IANS, NEW DELHI

‘Was manhandled, abused by Air India employee’

S

hiv Sena MPs this week surrounded Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapati Raju over the flying ban on party MP Ravindra Gaikwad and threatened that unless it is lifted they “won’t allow the airlines to fly from Mumbai”. The incident happened after the Lok Sabha was adjourned by Speaker Sumitra Mahajan till 12.45 p.m. over the Shiv Sena protest. As soon as Shiv Sena MPs surrounded Raju, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs S.S. Ahluwalia rushed to him. He was followed by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh. They took Raju and Union Minister Ananth Geethe with them to the Speaker’s chamber. Sources said that Speaker Mahajan discussed the issue with the leaders. Earlier, Shiv Sena MPs were agitated over a statement of the Civil Aviation Minister, who reiterated that the ban was not aimed at a Member of Parliament, but for a passenger and safety was most

important in flights. This led to a protest by Shiv Sena members, and the House was adjourned. Gaikwad, who was banned from flying after he assaulted an Air India staff, said that he had been provoked and alleged that the airlines staff misbehaved with him.

Speaking on the issue during Zero Hour Gaikwad demanded that the flying ban on him be lifted. He got support from other opposition parties. The Shiv Sena MP also said that he can apologize to Parliament but will not apologise to the airline staffer.

NEW DELHI: Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad has said he had been “abused and manhandled” by an Air India official during his controversial flight last month when he had beaten a flight officer with his footwear, and offered to apologize for his behavior but not to the 60-year-old Air India official. Gaikwad, who had confessed to hitting an Air India duty manager for not being given a business class seat, said in the House that on the day of the incident (March 23) he was made to travel in economy class despite having a business class ticket. He said after the Pune-Delhi flight landed in the national capital, he asked for the complaint register. “Then an officer came, then two or three more officers came.. When I said that I was a politician, one of them said ‘But you are not Narendra Modi. Are you?’” said the Shiv Sena

MP, giving his version of the incident. He alleged he was pushed around by the airlines staff and then one of them held him “by the collar”. “There is video evidence of the entire incident, thanks to the air hostess of the same airlines... I am staring at a ban across all airlines,” Gaikwad said and claimed that the charges against him are “unfounded” and should be taken back. “I have been charged under IPC 308, which is for ‘attempt to murder’. Was I holding any weapon?.. Is this justice,” he added. Gaikwad had hit R. Sukumar for not being given a business class seat on an all-economy flight, and was slapped with a flight ban across all airlines. uducherry Lt. Governor Kiran Bedi this week came down heavily on Chief Secretary Manoj Parida, describing his official conduct in a matter as “immature, unprofessional and irregular”. However, the senior bureaucrat defended his actions, obviously in connection with the transfer of the Puducherry Municipal Commissioner, and said the Lt. Governor is “not aware of rules”. In a tweet, Bedi said: “The irresponsible and immature conduct of the Chief Secretary has brought huge anguish and rift in the governance of Puducherry.” In another tweet, she said the Chief Secretary’s role was unprofessional and irregular in hounding an officer despite directions and rules. While her tweets are on her Twitter handle, a message below said “this tweet is unavailable”. In response, Parida told IANS,“I

She is not aware of the rules.” He said there was a direction from the Puducherry assembly Speaker on the matter. “Some officer is kept out temporarily. The officer may be brought back after a week. Why is she getting worked up?” Parida said.

nder pressure from ruling ally Shiv Sena and the opposition clamoring for farm loans waiver, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said the Maharashtra government is studying the Uttar Pradesh model to help farmers. “I have already instructed the state Finance Secretary to study the UP farm loan waiver model and see how it can be implemented here,” Fadnavis informed the state legislature. He said the government has sought central assistance to write off the farm debts here, but in case that was not possible the state government would explore ways and means through its own resources. “We are working hard to help our farmers since day one of our government,” Fadnavis assured amidst loud demands for making farmers debt-free. Fadnavis’ assurance came a day after the shocking incident of two graduate debt-ridden farmer-brothers ending their lives in Satara.

According to Satara Superintendent of Police Sandip Patil, the deceased were Jagannath Chavan and his brother Vijay Chavan, both science graduates, married and having two sons each. They ran an agro-processing unit in MIDC, Karad and were being harassed by recovery agents for repaying a loan of around Rs five million, Patil said. Vijay consumed poison at the factory. After hearing the tragedy, his brother Jagannath also jumped

before a train and ended his life. Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray has lauded Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s announcement writing off all farm-debts upto Rs one lakh for the farmers of his state. “It’s a creditable achievement, he has kept his pre-poll promise... He has proved that election promises need not be mere ‘jumlas’, but can be implemented,” Thackeray said in a statement in party mouthpiece Saamana Group.

Also exiting the tournament were men’s singles shuttler B. Sai Praneeth, the men’s doubles pair of Manu Attri and B. Sumeeth Reddy and the mixed doubles pair of Sumeeth and N. Sikki Reddy. India had high hopes from sixth seed and 2016 Olympic silver medallist Sindhu. The 21-year-old, who won the India Open on Sunday, was toppled by world No.13 Chen Yufei of China 21-18, 19-21, 17-21 in an hour and eight minutes. Sindhu’s veteran compatriot, Saina fell to in-form Japanese world No.4 Akane Yamaguchi, who won 19-21, 21-13, 21-15 in 56 minutes at the Perpaduan Stadium. Reigning Olympic champion Carolina Marin of Spain defeated Hong Kong’s Yin Yip Pui 21-16, 21-11 to advance to the second round. The men’s doubles pair of Manu Attri and Sumeeth also crashed out of the competition, losing to Chinese Taipei’s Liao Kuan Hao and Lu Chia Pin 21-18, 18-21, 17-21. World No.19 Jayaram, however, crossed the first-round barrier, brushing aside Chinese Qiao Bin 21-

efending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad rode on a solid top order contribution and some disciplined bowling to defeat Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 35 runs in the opening match of the 2017 Indian Premier League (IPL) here. Asked to bat first by the visitors, Hyderabad posted a commanding 207/4 in their allotted 20 overs at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. In reply, RCB were bowled out for 172 runs in 19.4 overs. RCB started their chase in explosive fashion as Chris Gayle and Mandeep Singh scored around 10 runs an over in the first five overs. The visitors suffered their first blow when a Rashid Khan delivery found an inside edge off Mandeep’s bat before hitting the stumps. They suffered a bigger blow in the next over when Gayle slightly mistimed a shot off Deepak Hooda only to offer a skier to David Warner at long-off. Kedar Jadhav and Travis Head gave RCB a glimmer of hope with a 56-run stand off 31 balls but Ben

Cutting produced an excellent bit of fielding to run out Jadhav and put an end to what was shaping to be a promising partnership. It was all downhill from there for RCB as they lost wickets at regular intervals. By the time Ashish Nehra removed Shane Watson and Sreenath Aravind off consecutive deliveries in the 18th over with

RCB still needing 52 runs, the match was almost as good as over. Nehra, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Rashid Khan clinched two wickets each while Deepak Hooda and Bipul Sharma got one each. Earlier, Hyderabad rode on a solid top order contribution to post a commanding total. Opener Shikhar Dhawan (40)

and one-down Moises Henriques (52) made up for the early loss of skipper David Warner (14) with a 74-run second-wicket stand. Veteran Punjab batsman Yuvraj Singh (62), then joined the run feast and together with Australian all-rounder Henriques, brought up another 58-run stand for the third wicket to take the hosts past the

150-run mark by the 15th over. Earlier, Rajasthan left-arm pacer Aniket Choudhary could not have asked for a better IPL debut when he induced Warner with some swing to be comfortably caught by Mandeep Singh at backward point. The southpaw’s eight-ball knock was laced with two fours and a six. Dhawan, who has been out of the India selectors’ radar for quite a part of the domestic season, unsettled the RCB bowlers with his 31ball knock comprising five fours. RCB had to wait until the 11th over to get their second wicket when Dhawan failed to clear the long-on boundary off Stuart Binny to be caught by Sachin Baby. Henriques, on the other hand, started with a flashy four and lost no time to settle down. The Aussie all-rounder helped SRH continue the momentum even after the fall of Dhawan and together with Yuvraj blasted the bowlers all over the park. Yuvraj, who was dropped on 26 off Choudhary, took full advantage of the life, rushing to his fastest IPL half century in just 23 balls.

I am ready to go to jail,” Rakhi told the media. The complainant had accused the actress of “hurting the religious sen-

timents” of the Valmiki community. Rakhi has chosen to defend herself two days after a Punjab police team came to Mumbai to execute the

Rakhi said when she heard about the case, she went to Bangur Nagar and Oshiwara police station and asked for a warrant. However, the police “denied any warrant” against her. However, the actress apologized for hurting the religious sentiments of the Valmiki community. “I just gave an example of Valmiki ji that I have been reading in books since childhood... I didn’t want to hurt anybody’s sentiments,” she added.Rakhi also claimed that ever since she made a comment drawing a comparison between singer Mika Singh and Valmiki last year, she had been receiving threats.

Hrithik was shocked by such claims, and took to Twitter day to post: “My dear lady, who are you and why are you lying.” In response to Hrithik’s stance, Angela wrote on Twitter: “I respect you a lot sir and I am sorry for such misleading headlines. The film is Taapsee’s canvas all the way and one must laud her martial arts prowess and hard work which shines in the action sequences. Her feisty persona and agility are praiseworthy. But that is where it ends. She fails to make an impact when she emotes and the scene during her childhood, when she witnesses her parents fight, is particularly tacky and unconvincing. Prithviraj Sukumaran as the arms dealer Mikhail aka Tony, has a strong screen presence and portrays his character with conviction. A melee of good actors appear for no real reason at all and naturally fail to impress owing to the poor script and characterisation.

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Asking Apple’s voiceassistant Siri to say ‘108’ can land you, and others in big trouble. The law enforcement agencies are warning iPhone users across the U.S. 108 is India’s emergency number equivalent to 911 in the US. When users say that number to Siri, it mistakenly believes that you are trying to make an emergency call and will connect you with 911. The warnings have come following a viral prank on social media, with many encouraging their friends and followers to say, ‘Hey Siri, 108’ to see what the command does. Police authorities are now roping in social media to urge iPhone users not to test the ‘108’ command and waste emergency personnel’s time. “The command, in fact, will instruct Siri to call emergency services, which could potentially tie up emergency lines,” read the Facebook page of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office in Texas. The Facebook page for the police department in Lewistown, Pa., asked people to not fall prey to this prank: “Please don’t do this and talk to your kids to let them know that it is not something they should do either. If 9-1-1 operators are trying to answer these calls, a real emergency call might not be answered as quickly as it needs to be answered. The virtual assistant gives users a five second window to cancel or make the emergency call. The Lewistown police’s post added that if an accidental call is made to 911, “please don’t immediately hang up the phone. It’s better to stay on the line and tell the 9-1-1 operator what happened. Otherwise, they will be trying to call you back or send an officer out to check that everything is OK there.”

Govt warns against H-1B visa ‘misuse’ BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC -- The H-1B visa filing window for 2017 started on April 3, and the Department of Homeland Security will accept applications till April 7. But the Justice Department had a stern warning for companies applying for skilled foreign labor--don’t misuse the H-1B visa to the disadvantage of American workers. “The Justice Department will not tolerate employers misusing the H-1B visa process to discriminate against US workers,” Acting Assistant Attorney General Tom Wheeler of the Civil Rights Division said, in a statement. “US. workers should not be placed in a disfavored status, and the department is wholeheartedly committed to investigating and vigorously prosecuting these claims.” Under the direction of former Senator Jeff Sessions, the Justice Department is likely to go after big and small companies who have had complaints against them for abusing the H-1B visa system. Sessions is a big critic of legal and illegal immigration. The move also comes on the heels of U.S. Oregon District Court Judge Michael Simon throwing out a lawsuit that challenged the H-1B visa lottery system, saying that the government’s random visa distribution method does not violate the law. The lawsuit termed the H-1B visa lottery by the USCIS as a “never ending game of chance.” The federal judge didn’t agree with that assessment in his 31-page opinion. The case was brought by two Portland, Ore. firms, Tenrec Inc., a web development company, and Walker Macy, a landscape architecture firm. Each sought to hire an H-1B visa worker, but lost the lottery. The lawsuit wanted petitions to be processed in the order they are received, and end the lottery system.

Nataraja Natyanjali raises funds again BY A STAFF WRITER TLANTA, GA -- Nataraja Natyanjali Kuchipudi Dance Academy presented an enthralling 4th annual dance recital, ‘Darsayami 2017’at the Berkmar High School on March 26. Its 5th fundraiser was also held to help AmanVedika-a Hyderabad, India-based non-profit orphanage that shelters, educates and empowers children in need. Academy’s youngest students from Tiny Bells section confidently performed for the first time a prayer dance to Lord Ganesh, Lord Siva, Goddess Saraswathi and Goddess Mahalakshami. The show was a breathtaking magical and exuberant extravaganza of 17 traditional classical dances with spiritual and devotional content. Indian pleads guilty to use of fake passport

A

BY A STAFF WRITER LATTSBURGH, NY – Manish Patel, 43, and a citizen of India, has pled guilty to use of a false passport. According to United States Attorney Richard Hartunian, as part of his guilty plea, Patel admitted to presenting a forged Indian passport to Border Patrol agents in the early-morning hours of January 20, 2017. Patel used the forged passport–which was in another person’s name, but bore Patel’s photograph–to fly from India to Toronto, by way of London, prior to illegally entering the US. Sentencing is scheduled for August 16, 2017 before Senior United States District Judge Norman Mordue. Patel faces up to 10 years in prison and up to 3 years of post-imprisonment supervised release, and a $250,000 fine. A defendant’s sentence is imposed by a judge based on the particular statute the defendant is charged with violating the US Sentencing Guidelines and other factors.

Your phones may be secretly talking NEW YORK: Do you use smartphone apps to organize lunch dates, make convenient online purchases or communicate the most intimate details of your existence? Beware, as these apps may be secretly talking to each other and potentially breaching your security, the researchers have warned. A study showed that applications on the android phones are able to talk to one another and trade information. The biggest security risks were some of the least utilitarian — apps that pertained to personalization of ringtones, widgets, and emojis, the researchers said. —IANS

LONDON: Some may scoff at adolescents’ use of social media networks as they pine for likes, but a new study suggests that using the photo-sharing app Instagram can actually strengthen the closeness of their friendships which in turn may help curb depression. “This age group may be particularly at risk for the impact of Instagram, given the increasing popularity of Instagram in adolescence and given the increase of depressive symptoms during this stage of life,” said researcher Eline Frison from University of Leuven in Belgium. “This study offers practitioners greater insight into the outcomes of adolescents’ Instagram use,” Frison said. The findings are scheduled to be presented at the 67th annual International Communication Association conference to be held at San Diego, California from May 25-29, 2017.

From 2013-2014, Frison set up a large-scale study to investigate the relationships between adolescents’ social networking site use and their well-being. Students filled out paperand-pencil surveys between sixmonth periods. The surveys asked students about their use of social networking sites like Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram, and their well-being (depressive symptoms, life satisfaction, loneliness). The data analysed revealed that using Instagram at one point was related to increased closeness to friends (perception that they are appreciated and loved by their friends) six months later, which in turn was related to lower levels of depression. However, the researchers cautioned that if the use of the photo sharing app fails to stimulate the feeling closeness to friends, it could be harmful in the long run.

How to offer healthy diet to children IANS, NEW DELHI

P

ile on nutrition on your childs plate and make it look yummy yet healthy, say experts. Sujetha Shetty, nutritionist and diet expert at online fitness platform Gympik, and Gulneer Puri, dietician at tele-medicine platform Doctor Insta, suggest how: Grains: Choose whole grains such as whole-wheat bread, oatmeal, quinoa or brown bread. Whole grains are good sources of Vitamin B and fibre which fill your child’s tummy and help improving digestion. Protein: Proteins are the building blocks which are important for maintaining and repairing tissues, making haemo-

globin, improving immunity, and helping muscles grow. The sources of protein include seafood, eggs, lean meat and poultry, legumes, peas, beans, soy products, unsalted nuts and seeds. Fruits: Including fruits and vegetables in your child’s diet is one of the major difficulties you might have already faced. Encourage your child to eat a

variety of fresh fruits. Let fruit juice be the last option as the juice takes out the fibre that comes from the whole fruit. Also, fruit juices come with loads of added sugar that only contribute to empty calories sans nutrition. If your child drinks juice, make sure you make it at home without adding sugar.

# Try to avoid the components listed below from your child’s diet: Added sugar: Help your children get habituated to natural foods and beverages. Limit their consumption of processed foods, chocolates, bars, breakfast cereals and candies that contain corn syrup, brown sugar, corn sweetener and caramel. Saturated and trans fats: These are the unhealthy fats that come from foods such as full-fat dairy products, red meat and poultry. Try replacing saturated fats with Vitamin E and essential fatty acids that are found in vegetable and nut oils, sea foods etc. Healthier fats can also be found in nuts, olives and avocados. Avoid the consumption of trans fats by removing foods containing partially hydrogenated oil. Summer is the time when children go out in the scorching heat to play. Make sure that children don’t skip their meals.
