14 dead in US shooting

President Barack Obama calls the shooting rampage "an act of terrorism"; FBI says the attack appears to have been inspired though not directed by the Islamic State ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

Trump: Bar Muslims' entry to US

A

nother deadly mass shooting in Southern California left as many as 14 people dead and another 21 injured after a Pakistani origin couple opened fire at a holiday party for the environmental health department in the Inland Regional Centre in San Bernardino city. Hours after the mass shooting at a center for people with developmental disabilities in San Bernardino, 60 miles east of Los Angeles, with a population of just over 200,000 people, the two suspects were shot dead in a gun battle with police. Chicago born Syed Rizwan Farook, 28, and Tashfeen Malik, 27, his Pakistani wife in the US on a visa, were both dressed in tactical gear and armed with rifles, handguns and multiple ammunition magazines for the attack, media reports said. As they strode into an event for county workers in San Bernardino on December 2 morning, the couple opened fire, spraying 65 to 75 rounds and leaving behind an unexploded pipe bomb before fleeing in a rented black Ford Expedition. Later, police found 12 "pipe bomb-type devices" at the suspect couple's home in Redlands, along with thousands of rounds of ammunition. Another set of three pipe bombs

WASHINGTON: Republican presidential frontrunner Donald J. Trump sent shock waves through the political establishment with a call to bar Muslims from entering the US until lawmakers figure out what is going on. "Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what is going on," a campaign press release said. Many of his Republican presidential rivals slammed Trump with former Florida Governor Jeb Bush tweeting that "Donald Trump is unhinged and his "policy" proposals are not serious."

Tashfeen Malik belonged to Dera Ghazi Khan in Punjab province, according to local media. Her identity card has also been published in some local newspapers. From 2007 to at least 2012, Malik studied in Pakistan's Multan city, where one faculty member recalled

Police chief Jarrod Burguan. US President Barack Obama called the shooting rampage "an act of terrorism" and warned that the terror threat has evolved into a new phase. "This was an act of terrorism,

designed to kill innocent people," Xinhua quoted Obama as saying on December 6 in his third Oval Office address during his sevenyear presidency. "It is clear that the two of them had gone down the dark path of rad-

icalisation, embracing a perverted interpretation of Islam that calls for war against America and the West," Obama said. The Pakistani origin couple had long been "radicalized" and had practiced at a target range days before last week's massacre, according to the FBI. The attack now appears to have been inspired though not directed by the Islamic State, it said. They "were radicalized and have been for quite some time," said David Bowdich, assistant director of the FBI's Los Angeles field office on December 7. "The question for us is how, and by whom, and where." Relatives didn't see any red flags, according to David Chesley, an attorney representing Farook's family.

Obama calls Modi to clinch climate deal US Supreme Court to take up college reservation case

n a bid to clinch a deal at the ongoing Paris climate conference, President Barack Obama is working the phones with calls to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other world leaders. He spoke on the phone with Modi on December 8 "to discuss the ongoing Paris climate conference," according to a White House readout of the call. "Both leaders emphasized their personal commitment to secure a strong climate change agreement this week and their interest in our countries' working together to achieve a successful outcome," it said. On behalf of the American people, Obama also accepted Modi's condolences for the loss of life in the San Bernardino shootings last week. Besides calling Modi on December 8, Obama conferred by phone earlier this week with Pres-

ident Dilma Rousseff of Brazil, New York Times cited Secretary of State John Kerry as saying in an interview on the sidelines of United Nations climate change talks in Paris. India and Brazil, along with China and the US, are among the world's top producers of greenhouse gases that warm the planet,

noted the Times. "The role of the four nations in reaching a deal to curb those emissions is crucial to the success of the negotiations." In a separate discussion with reporters on December 8, Kerry said he had also been working the phones to reach a deal, the Times said.

he US Supreme Court is set to take up next week a case challenging the legality of reservations based on race in colleges and university admissions that adversely impact the Indian diaspora. The case questions the use of race as a criterion for admission by Texas University in affirmative action programmes saying it violates the constitutional guarantee of equality for all. Universities say they are meant to help disadvantaged communities like those of African Americans, Latinos and Native Americans and to ensure diversity. The use of race in admissions sometimes turn into racial quotas similar to caste-based reservations in India and hurt Indian Americans and other Asians. Indians, along with other Asians, are treated as the equivalent of a most-forward community and are therefore affected even more than

whites when quotas are used by universities. Because of this Asians have been required by some of the top universities to score much higher than whites in the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), a common entrance exam, which is one of the determinants of admission. This is meant to prevent the student body being dominated by Asians, who get higher SAT scores and school grades.

Congress trying to cover up graft: BJP NEW DELHI: Slamming the Congress for disrupting parliament to cover up its corruption, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday said it has nothing to do with the National Herald case. “Why is Congress talking about the complainant, and not about the corruption? The two houses faced repeated disruptions, and were eventually adjourned for the day, as Congress members protested “political vendetta”. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley hit back at the Congress, saying the National Herald case was a matter of serious corruption and the

India, Iran discuss undersea gas pipeline NEW DELHI: A senior Iranian official said on December 7 that negotiations are being held to build a $4.5 billion undersea gas pipeline from Iran to Indian west coast following India’s rejection of the proposal for an onland pipeline that would pass through Pakistan. “Negotiations are under serious consideration,” said National Iranian

Gas Export Company managing director Alireza Kameli at the World Energy Policy Summit here. The planned pipeline from the Iranian coast via the Oman Sea and Indian Ocean to Gujarat is proposed to carry 31.5 million standard cubic metres gas per day and will be built in two years, from the date necessary approvals and a gas sale and purchase agreement are signed, he said. “We welcome India’s participation. At the moment, Iran is in negotiations with South Asia Gas Enterprise (SAGE) for construction of an undersea line,” he said. As per the proposal being discussed, SAGE will lay the 1,400 km pipeline bypassing the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of Pakistan.

he Supreme Court on December 7 declined to entertain a public interest petition seeking direction to parliament for enacting a uniform civil code to end alleged discrimination being faced by Muslim women, telling the petitioner to approach parliament and not waste the court’s time. A bench of Chief Justice T.S. Thakur, Justice A.K. Sikri and Justice R. Banumathi said that it is for parliament to take a call on the issue and it was not in the

realm of the apex court to issue a direction (to parliament) on this. Chief Justice Thakur, in a disapproving note, told senior counsel Gopal Subramaniam, appearing for the petitioner, that if such petitions were filed without regard to the law, the court will come down very heavily.

Rating agency Fitch says ‘stable’ India to grow at 7.5 percent IANS, MUMBAI

M

aintaining a stable outlook for India, ratings agency Fitch on December 7 said the country’s economy will grow by 7.5 percent in the current fiscal that will stand out globally, but warned that its business environment would remain weak despite improvements. It has also forecast an 8 percent growth rate for India in 2016-17. The agency said a “BBB-” rating, the lowest in the investment grade, along with a stable outlook and a

strong medium-term growth prospect and favorable external finances, will balance out with high

government debt, weak structurals and a difficult, but improving, business environment.

“Translation of structural reforms into improved indicators and higher real GDP (gross domestic product) growth depends on actual implementation. India’s sovereign ratings continue to be constrained by limited improvement in its fiscal position,” Fitch said. It said even as the government continues to steadily roll out its structural reform agenda, like in liberalizing the foreign equity regime, it is also facing difficulty in garnering support in the upper house of parliament for big-ticket steps, like goods and services tax regime.

Gentler Modi as parliament resumes functioning After the Bihar drubbing, the BJP has realized that the country cannot be moulded in accordance with what is taught in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) shakhas or schools. Hence the advice to MPs to avoid being provocative temple in Gujarat for being a Dalit another example of the Gujarat “model”, she said — and the Congress’s demand for the resignation of union minister Gen. V.K. Singh (retd) for likening Dalits to dogs. Apart from such episodes, two trends emerged during the muchanticipated debate on intolerance.

dismissal of the sense of unease among a section of the intelligentsia as “manufactured” or the threat to eliminate all manifestations of Westernization, which include lifestyle matters such as culinary preferences or women staying out late. After the Bihar drubbing, the BJP has realized that the country cannot be moulded in accordance with what is taught in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) shakhas or schools. Hence the advice to MPs to avoid being provocative and the appeal to the judiciary to decriminalize homosexuality. But the most remarkable change has been in Modi’s conduct. He was always an impressive orator, even “mesmeric”, as Congress spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi said. But, now, from being an acerbic critic of his opponents, the prime minister has donned the mantle of a philosopher by his praise of India’s multicultural reality with its 12 reli-

he good news is that parliament is once again engaged in its business of debate and discussion even if haltingly because of the occasional demonstrations in the well of the house and walkouts. Even then, the people in general will offer a silent prayer of thanks to the

excitable MPs over the dawning of sense among them, though belatedly. The bad news is that the kind of decorum and dignified conduct which should be a normal feature of the two houses is still not in evidence with the Congress’s nominal leader, Mallikarjan Kharge — the real leaders are Sonia and Rahul Gandhi — warning of “bloodshed”

if an attempt is made to remove the words, secular and socialist, from the Constitution. Compared, however, to the purposeful stalling of any transaction of business which marked the earlier sessions, few would be worried by the relatively minor disruptions over former minister Kumari Selja’s claim that she was not allowed to enter a

One was Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s conciliatory approach, marking a dramatic departure from his earlier sarcastic belligerence evident in dubbing Rahul Gandhi a shehzada (crown prince). The other was Rahul Gandhi’s high-pitched aggression, which might be the result of his introspection during his 57-day sabbatical in March-April. The BJP appears to have understood the verities of this cyclical nature of politics. It has decided, therefore, to eschew the party’s earlier arrogance evident in the insulting

gions and 122 languages, as he told parliament, and the admission that all previous governments had contributed to the country’s development. This is a far cry from the saffron camp’s routine claim that all of India’s past history was an area of darkness. However, what will be of interest is to see, whether the gentler Modi can ensure the passage of the GST legislation to set rolling the reforms process and, secondly, how the RSS will react to the emergence of a BJP which is deviating from the saffron goal of a Hindu rashtra.

Rajendra Prasad was no rubberstamp head of state PRAVEEN DAVAR, NEW DELHI

T

he assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, on January 30, 1948, brought Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Patel, differing on various issues, together. On Nehru’s 60th birthday, 14 November 1948, Patel praised Nehru for leading the nation safely out of the crisis that faced the country during the year and for enhancing India’s image abroad. However, the relations between the prime minister and the home minister in independent India got strained over the choice of the first president. Nehru had wanted the first Indian governor general after independence, C Rajagopalachari, or Rajaji as he was called, to be bestowed the honor. He had, in fact, persuaded, Rajendra Prasad, who was Patel’s choice, to step aside in favor of Rajaji. Nehru called a meeting of

Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) members to ascertain their views. The majority, dominated by north Indian MPs, expressed their preference for Prasad. The great democrat that he was, Nehru bowed to the party’s wish

and paved the way for Rajendra Prasad to be the first President. But from the start relations between the new President and his Prime Minister were uneasy. Prasad wanted the day fixed for the declaration of the Republic, 26 January,

changed because his astrologers had told him that it was not an auspicious day. Nehru did not lose the opportunity to tell the President that India would not be run by astrologers, at least as long as he was around. The restoration of the Somnath temple had been approved by the Nehru cabinet soon after Junagadh acceded to India in November 1947. Its reconstruction however was completed only a few months after Sardar Patel had passed away in December 1950. KM Munshi, a cabinet minister, who was the chairman of the official committee of reconstruction of the temple, approached Prasad to inaugurate the temple. Installation of the jyotirlingam was a part of the inaugural ceremony. Munshi was apprehensive that the President might not accept the invitation in view of the fact that Nehru was not in favor of a secular

state associating itself with a religious ceremony. Prasad, however, disregarded the prime minister’s objections and attended the ceremony, which drew scathing criticism from the socialists and communist leaders. The first president was personally and ideologically opposed to the enactment of the Hindu Code Bill. When this bill came before the provisional parliament, Prasad had objected to it on the basis of locus standi and said that since it was not an elected parliament, such an important measure should not be considered and passed by it. Nehru visited the Soviet Union in June 1955 and the reception he received on arrival in Moscow was unprecedented. The feeling in India was one of exultation over the triumphant tour of their national hero. Swept along by the wave, President Prasad decided to bestow Bharat Ratna on Nehru.

Bhramar Mukherjee to lead US cancer research WASHINGTON: The University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Centre has appointed Bhramar Mukherjee as associate director for population science research. She will oversee work on cancer causes, prevention, care delivery and outcomes. “As a biostatistician and epidemiologist, I can bring a lot to this role,” a university release quoted Mukherjee as saying. “We live in a very data-driven world. There are tremendous opportunities, both within the University of Michigan and nationally around big data - using medical records and mining large datasets to manage patient outcomes and care,” she said. “Groundbreaking prevention and health communications research is happening today by using social media and mobile sensors. Data is helping us to better understand disparities in cancer care, delivery and outcomes.” Mukherjee is John D. Kalbfleisch Collegiate professor of biostatistics and professor of epidemiology at the U-M School of Public Health. She

also serves as the associate chair for biostatistics. Her cancer research has focused on how the interaction between genes and the environment impacts cancer risk. Mukherjee plans to foster and facilitate cross-collaboration within the population sciences program in the cancer center and across various other units at the University of Michigan, something she has done frequently as a biostatistician.

‘Immigrants critical for both America and India’ ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

T

wo Indian-American makers of a new film about immigrants in America believe immigration, which has emerged as a key issue in US presidential elections, is “incredibly critical” for both America and India. “We think immigration is incredibly critical not just for America but also for India,” says Rishi Bhilawadikar, writer/producer of “For Here or To Go?” — a comedy drama set against the backdrop of the 2008 recession about many personal battles faced by immigrants. “Indian Americans are key contributors to growth and competitiveness,” he said in an interview with IANS pointing to Sundar Pichai and Satya Nadella, CEOs of Google and Microsoft respectively as examples. “As artists we hope a story like ‘For Here or To Go?’ humanizes the situation and can contribute towards action in bringing about sensible immigration reform,” Bhilawadikar said. Rucha Humnabadkar, San Francisco-based director of the film, agrees, saying one of their goals “is

to show that the immigration debate is about people and people’s lives and not just numbers or policy. We hope to put a human face to this largely political issue.” “Immigration is a complex demographic phenomenon and there needs to be a broader discussion that goes beyond the theme of illegal immigration to the US,” she said. “Presidential candidates must take a more comprehensive approach, which involves attracting

and retaining the brightest and smartest minds from around the world, which is what will continue to help this nation to truly remain innovative and drive sustained economic growth.” The film tells the contemporary story of ambition and ambivalence of Desi immigrants, “Americans in mind and Indians at heart,” through the struggles of Vivek Pandit, a young Silicon Valley software professional awaiting the renewal of his work visa.

Sushma visits Pak, hopes soar high In a sign of improving bilateral ties, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi may visit Pakistan next year to attend Saarc conference, Indian Foreign Minister announced IANS, ISLAMABAD

Sushma Swaraj meets Nawaz Sharif

ndia and Pakistan are set to hold the third bilateral engagement at the top level in less than 10 days with Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj reaching Islamabad on December 8 for a conference on Afghanistan. Following an impromptu meeting between Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Nawaz Sharif in Paris on the margins of a global climate change conference on November 30, the national security advisers of the two sides met in Bangkok on December 6 and discussed all major issues, including Kashmir. Sushma Swaraj is expected to take this process forward during her meetings with Prime Minister Sharif and his Adviser on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz on the margins of what is called the 5th Ministerial Conference on Heart of Asia Istanbul Process. said here on December 9. Modi will participate in South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) summit, Sushma Swaraj told the media. Sushma Swaraj said she would accompany Modi during his visit, Geo TV reported. Swaraj said it was time that India and Pakistan displayed maturity in doing business with each other.

“It is time we display maturity and self confidence to do business with each other and strengthen regional trade and cooperation,” Sushma Swaraj said in her address at the Heart of Asia Summit here. On December 8, soon after her arrival here, she attended a dinner hosted by Aziz in honor of the visiting delegates of the Heart of Asia conference.

This is the first ministerial visit from India to its South Asian neighbor since the then external affairs minister S.M. Krishna went to Pakistan in 2012. But Sushma Swaraj’s visit is likely to include more. After the Bangkok meeting between India’s Ajit Doval and Naseer Khan Janjua of Pakistan, along with foreign secretaries S. Jais-

BEIJING: At least two million cars were taken off the road as Beijing rolled out its emergency response plan following its first-ever red alert for smog. A grey haze hung heavy over China’s capital on December 8 after it announced the most severe smog warning under its four-tier system. The alert was active from 7.00 a.m. (local time) on Dec 8 till noon on Dec 10, Xinhua reported. On December 8, the average density of PM2.5 exceeded 234 micrograms per cubic meter in the downtown areas. Schools were closed, work at outdoor construction sites suspended, and factories have been ordered to halt operations. Beijing also closed several highway sections to reduce traffic. The traffic ban, based on the odd or even license plate numbers, takes at least two million private cars off the road. In addition, 30 percent of government cars were subject to travel bans. Authorities worked overnight to ensure smooth public transport.

ISLAMABAD: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on December 9 met Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on the sidelines of the Heart of Asia Conference here. “Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Indian Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj are conducting a meeting to discuss bilateral issues on the sidelines of the ‘Heart of Asia’ Conference in the capital on Wednesday,” Dawn online reported. Adani was aiming to ship 40 million tonnes of coal per year to power stations in India during the project’s first phase, which he describes as an important project between Australia and India providing electricity to a minimum 100 million people over the next 100 years. This was despite prices for thermal coal, used in power stations, are continuing its four year slump to reach new 10-year lows of $54 per ton last week down from almost $100 per ton in 2013 as market oversupply continues.

ISTANBUL: At least six refugees were drowned on December 8 as their boat capsized in the Aegean Sea while attempting to reach a Greek island, the media reported. The boat people, seeking better lives in Europe, departed from Cesme in Turkey’s province of Izmir off the Aegean, Xinhua reported. The Turkish coast guards rescued eight asylum seekers who were found with their life jackets on the surface of the sea, the agency said. It was still not clear how many refugees were on the boat. The rescue operations continued to find the missing.

ife in flood-hit Chennai was slowly limping back to normalcy, with rains stopping on December 8 morning in Tamil Nadu capital. Shops opened up and a massive clean up operation have been initiated in the affected districts where the water levels have receded. The weather department has forecast heavy rains in coastal Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, due to low pressure in Bay of Bengal. Resumption of auto-rickshaw services and public transport made

people’s life easier after being completely crippled for the past six days. Southern Railways has cancelled some long distance trains at Chennai Central and Chennai Egmore stations. Schools and colleges remain closed in 12 districts of Tamil Nadu. Several localities in flood-hit Chennai, Cuddalore, Thiruvallur and Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu were still marooned even as flood water receded and power supply returned in parts of Chennai. In general, however, life continues to be difficult for almost everyone as they have to battle with contaminat-

ed water - including municipal supply and well and ground water - as well as slush and filth all around their homes. Heavy rains which battered the four districts located close to the sea over the past month leading to floods have claimed 325 lives and derailed the lives of millions. The Met office has predicted more heavy rains in coastal Tamil Nadu. Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa announced Rs.10,000, 10 kg of rice, a sari and dhoti to those who lost their huts in the unprecedented floods.

The chants of “Om” rent the air at the open-air converted Nishagandhi auditorium, where around 1,500 delegates had gathered for the opening ceremony. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, who lit the ceremonial lamp to inaugurate the event, said it was “an honor to have so many distinguished guests” at a single place at the festival organized by the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy (KSCA). All dignitaries present gave short speeches to welcome the guests. Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor, in a mixed speech in Malayalam and English, said he was “proud to be among some of the

Special camps will be held for two weeks from December 14 to issue duplicate land title deeds, educational certificates, cooking gas connection, voter identity and Aadhar cards and bank passbooks as tens of thousands of residents lost their precious documents. Voluntary organizations have stepped up their relief efforts in the flood hit areas. Chennai airport was returning to normalcy after resuming operations on December 6.

CHENNAI: Megastar Rajinikanth, who turns 64 on December 5, has requested his fans to call off all plans made to ring in his birthday, Rajnikanth which is usually celebrated like a ritual. This has been done due to the grave situation caused by heavy rains in Tamil Nadu. “As Tamil Nadu is limping back to normalcy after being struck by the worst rains in over a century, Rajinikanth has requested his fans to join hands and help the rain savaged people in relief work,” a source close to the actor told IANS. According to the source, the 63year old star feels extending help to the people of the state is more important than celebrating his birthday. It is also learnt that the official announcement regarding “Enthiran 2”, which was planned to be announced on the occasion of Rajinikanth’s birthday, has been postponed indefinitely.

most knowledgeable people” in the field. Brazilian filmmaker and writer Julio Bressane, who is the chair of the IFFK jury, pointed towards the audience as he said: “Thank you to each one of you”. Stating that his English was “a little rusty”, he said he hoped to judge the films correctly. The star of the show, however, was tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain, who set the stage on fire with a

mesmerizing performance. Accompanied by sarangi player Sabir Khan, son of vocalist late Ustad Sultan Khan, Zakir Hussain enthralled the packed auditorium with his percussion. Zakir Hussain said Kerala’s richness in culture and heritage has always enticed him. “I had unique opportunity to perform along with few of the legendary musical maestros from the state,” he said.

63-year-old man arrived here to participate in the first India International Science Fair (IISF) on December 7, using a self-developed solar electric-powered car to cover 3,000 km from Bangalore to Delhi. It took Syed Sajjad Ahmed 30 days to cover the arduous journey, which included crossing the Vindhyas. Born in Kolar, 70 km from Bangalore, the Class 12 dropout says he began his career as a fruit vendor and went on to set up a shop for electronics repair. His work included assembly of electronic goods, starting off with transistors, tape recorders and television sets and antennae. Later, he moved on to computers before attempting to realize his childhood dream to do some-

thing for society. “I had to leave school at 15 to start earning for the family. But the fire to create something that would be of use to humanity kept burning within me.” The break came in 2002. “I told myself that I am 50 now and I must do something before I become too old and infirm.” Ahmed started by modifying a two-wheeler to run on electric power and then a three-wheeler and later a four-wheeler.

ndia ended South Africa’s second innings at 143 runs to win the fourth and final cricket Test by 337 runs and clinch the series 3-0 at the Ferozeshah Kotla here on December 7. This was the first series victory at home for Indian skipper Virat Kohli and his second consecutive one after the triumph in Sri Lanka in September. India had won the first Test in Mohali and the third in Nagpur earlier in this series. With the series-win, India climbed to the second position in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Test rankings. Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was the most successful among the Indian bowlers in the second innings with figures of 5/61. Fast bowler Umesh Yadav bagged three quick wickets just after tea to return figures of 3/9. Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja returned with 2/26. Jadeja bowled 17 consecutive maiden overs in the second innings. He fell four maiden overs short of the existing record of former India spinner Bapu Nadkarni when Faf du Plesis walloped him to the long-on boundary. A.B. de Villiers was the highest scorer for the visitors with 43. His lengthy partnerships with Amla and du Plessis gave the Proteas genuine hopes of snatching a draw before they suffered a dramatic collapse shortly after the tea break. Vijender Singh will try to continue his unbeaten streak at the Manchester Arena after winning his opening two pro boxing matches. Vijender has steamed through his first two professional opponents, beating Sonny Whiting in his debut in October and followed that up with a one round demolition of Dean Gillen in Dublin last month. The 30-year-old, however, has a tough tie ahead as he prepares himself to fight experienced Hyuseinov who has won seven out of 14 contests.

Kohli, Ashwin, Rahane dedicate win to Chennai flood victims NEW DELHI: India captain Virat Kohli on Monday dedicated the Test series win over South Africa to the victims of the devastating floods in Chennai. “I dedicate our series win to the victims of the Chennai floods. It has been a very unfortunate few weeks. The kind of situation that has arisen in the city is really bad. My thoughts are with all the people who have

tinued their efforts to deny a victory to the hosts. Du Plessis took 53 deliveries to open his account. He is now third on the list of batsmen consuming most number of balls before opening their account after England’s John Murray (80 deliv-

NEW DELHI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on December 8 announced a cash award of Rs.20 million for the Indian team for beating South Africa 3-0 in the just-concluded Test series. India defeated the Proteas by 337 runs in the fourth and final Test to win the series 3-0 at the Ferozeshah Kotla in New Delhi on December 7. Chasing a mammoth target of 481 runs, the visitors were bowled out for 143. India won the first Test by 108 runs at Mohali and the third match by 124 runs in Nagpur. The second match at Bengaluru was rained off. “BCCI announces an award of Rs.2 crore to the Indian Cricket Team for their 3-0 series win against South Africa,” BCCI tweeted on December 7. BCCI’s all top bosses are in the city to attend a governing council meeting of the Indian Premier League (IPL). ndia’s Saina Nehwal and Malaysian veteran Lee Chong Wei were bagged by Awadh Warriors and Hyderabad Hotshots, respectively, for $1,00,000 each in the Premier Badminton League (PBL) players’ auction here on December 7. The third most expensive player was double World championship bronze medallist P.V. Sindhu who was snapped up by Chennai Smashers for $95,000 — $45,000 more than the talented Indian’s base price. World No.9 male shuttler Kidambi Srikanth also received a strong bidding and was sold for $80,000 to Bengaluru Top Guns. His compatriot, No.14 Parupalli Kashyap had to be content with a

price of $35,000. The 2014 Commonwealth Games champion went to Hyderbad. While Srikanth had a base price of $50,000, Kashyap’s base price was $25,000. With $1,00,000 being the maximum bid for a player, the bidding

for the two established players saw several franchises offering the highest purse for them. In the end, according to the PBL rules, a lottery was held and it was decided that Olympic bronze medal winner Saina will play for the Luc-

know-based side while two-time Olympic silver medallist Chong Wei will turn out for Hyderabad. Saina, earlier, played for Hyderabad in the now disbanded Indian Badminton League (IBL). Badminton Association of India president Akhilesh Das Gupta revealed that the auction for Saina and Chong Wei happened on December 6. No auction took place for established doubles players Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa. Among the overseas players, No.12 Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia was bought by Delhi for $74,000 — a jump of $24,000 from his base price. Russian Vladmir Ivanov was bagged by Mumbai for $42,000, while Malaysian doubles specialist Koo Kiet Kan went to Delhi for $36,000.

FILM REVIEW | TELUGU

Inji Iduppazhagi: Mildly amusing fitness commercial Film: Inji Iduppazhagi; Director: Prakash Kovelamudi; Cast: Anushka Shetty, Arya, Sonal Chauhan, Urvashi, Prakash Raj, Brahmanandam, Gollapudi Maruthi Rao and Bharath; Rating: **

I

n “Inji Iduppazhagi”, Anushka Shetty plays Sweety, an overweight woman who finds solace in eating - from keema samosa to jalebi - anything and everything she can stuff herself with. She almost eats through the entire first half; much to the worry of her mother whose only concern is to get her married off to an NRI. Her partner in crime is her diabetic grandfa-

ther, who likes to feed her everything he’s not supposed to eat. At one point, you get the feeling that this old man could be really responsible for her weight. With weight struggles as the core theme of the film, the makers

could’ve handled this story in two ways - attempt a full-length spoof with no compromises, or address the issue as sensitively as possible. The film achieves neither of these things and ends up making a mockery of even the little promise it dis-

plays sporadically, like the wonderful scene between the father and young Anushka at the beginning. While the first half is fairly engaging even with the cliches, the film almost turns into a fitness commercial post interval, especially towards the end, featuring cameo appearances by a bevy of stars such as Nagarjuna, Rana Daggubati, Jiiva, Simhaa, Kajal Aggarwal and Hansika Motwani among others. Despite all the pain she went through to gain weight, Anushka couldn’t save this one from turning into a largely boring experience. And to add to the woes, the makers fooled the viewers into believing that it’s a bilingual, which the film definitely isn’t as it mostly appears like a dubbed Hindi serial on Tamil channel. —Haricharan Pudipeddi

‘Neerja’ trailer to release with SRK’s ‘Dilwale’ IANS, MUMBAI

T PUNE : Incarcerated Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, whose five-year sentence for his involvement in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts was confirmed by the Supreme Court in March 2013, will be freed from prison by March 7, 2016, official sources said here on Tuesday. The sources indicated that barring last-minute glitches, Sanjay would be released by March 7 after completing the remaining 42month period of his sentence. Dutt was acquitted of terror charges under the TADA, but found guilty of possessing illegal arms, acquired ostensibly to protect his family during the communal conflagration that engulfed Mumbai after the demolition of the Babri Mosque on December 6, 1992. ‘Kajarya’ - A crisp tale with good performances Film: Kajarya; Director: Madhureeta Anand; Cast: Meenu Hooda, Ridhima Sud, Kuldeep Ruhil, Shashi Bushan, Sumeet Vyas; Rating: ***

A

fiction narrated in a neorealistic documentary style, Madhureeta Anand’s Kajarya is a crisply told, resiliently chilling story that is both disturbing as well as engaging. The film delves into the implied view of life and conduct with respect to female infanticide in the Indian society. Meera Sharma, a disinterested rookie journalist, working for the National Times, is sent to a small

village in Haryana about 80 km from Delhi, to cover a ritual that takes place on the eve of the full moon night at the village temple which is dedicated to Goddess Kali.

In the village, she learns that the said ritual involves ‘bali’, a human sacrifice. On further investigation, her path crosses that of Kajarya, the woman who under the influence of

opium, is forced to embody the god dess in fake religious ceremonies. While the story hooks you wit the two perspectives of the them that of the urban and the rural poin of view, it also gives an insight int how the Fourth Estate callously an insensitively handles this hear wrenching subject. The fascination aspect of the film lies in its two main protagonist Kajarya a victim of circumstance who is an unusual but effectiv mouthpiece against the barbar practice, and Meera Sharma, th ambitious and immature, cock reporter who lends a fine balance a the other end of the spectrum. Overall, the film is worth a watch — Troy Ribeir

BY A STAFF WRITER PRINGFIELD, IL -- The state of Illinois is exploring whether to implement digital driver licenses accessed through a smartphone app. Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White’s office has announced that it is looking for a company to help determine whether the state should allow the cellphone-based licenses. The app with the license would have the same information as what’s found on a regular plastic driver license. White’s office is seeking bids from companies to determine the cost and feasibility of a digital driver license program. Answers sought include ones about the pricing structure used by a vendor and whether police would be able to access verification information. “This is a preliminary fact-finding process for the purpose of obtaining information of new and innovative services,” according to an announcement from White’s office. Bids sought by White’s office follow formation of a special committee by Illinois lawmakers earlier this year to look into digital licenses. The panel was organized in an effort to bring the state in line with others considering electronic licenses. The special committee is led by state Rep. Karen McConnaughay, R-St. Charles. She said Illinois should be ready for change. “You have a whole new generation that doesn’t want to carry a wallet,” she said. McConnaughay said that hiring a consultant could help with some issues that have come up in meetings. “The more questions you ask, the more you realize that there’s a lot more that goes into creating a paperless drivers license system,” McConnaughay said. Legal questions about electronic driver licenses have come up, according to the Springfield bureau of Lee Enterprises newspapers. They include questions about the security of the information and the implications of handing a police officer a phone that contains so much other personal information.

Mukherjee, who focuses her research on how the interaction between genes and the environment impacts cancer risk, said in a statement, “As a biostatistician and epidemiologist, I can bring a lot to this role.” . Her ultimate goal, she added, will be to support the biomedical prevention and cancer care delivery programs at the center, as well as help with new recruitments and initiatives that advance population sciences.

Illinois to resume lottery payments BY A STAFF WRITER PRINGFIELD, IL -- The Illinois Lottery says it will resume paying all prizewinners after Gov. Bruce Rauner signed a short-term funding bill. Lottery winners have experienced delays since the beginning of the July 1 fiscal year because Republican Rauner and Democrats who control the Legislature still haven’t agreed on an annual spending plan. Those who won less than $600 have been receiving their money. But large winners were put on hold. The legislation okayed by Rauner includes

ComEd’s preference center for customers BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- ComEd has launched a new customer preference center that gives its customers the option to choose how they would like to receive communications from ComEd. The preference center, along with ComEd’s suite of customer self-service tools, was developed based on direct feedback from customers and is a part of the utility’s efforts to offer customers a premier experience. The new center offers small business and residential customers the ability to receive personalized alerts and notifications for power outages and timing for power restorations, billing and payment information, electricity usage updates, and applicable energy saving tips. Customers can select to receive this information from a variety of communications channels including emails, texts, phone calls, or mobile app notifications. “Our goal is to give our customers more control and choices to manage their ComEd accounts, while providing personalized service that makes their lives easier,” said Val Jensen, senior vice president of Customer Operations, ComEd. “The new preference center is another way ComEd is delivering on the promise to better serve our customers by providing them with convenient options to stay connected and get the information they want in the manner they choose to receive it.” The preference center is the latest enhancement made to ComEd’s suite of customer service tools. Earlier this year, the utility eliminated the $2.50 processing charge for using electronic checks (eChecks), and also provided customers with the option to securely store their payment accounts in

C

their virtual wallet for future use. In addition, customers enrolled in ComEd’s paperless billing program can receive their bill directly from ComEd.com, a feature that was previously available only through a third party website. “Over the last year ComEd has made a number of advancements updating technology and making it easier for our customers to do business with us,” said Jensen. The utility’s customer service tools are at the forefront of technology and enhancements available in the energy industry. Using direct customer input from crowdsourcing, last year ComEd redesigned its residential customer bill, which was recently recognized by PowerGrid International’s Customer Engagement Project of the Year Award. In addition, ComEd’s smart phone app achieved more than 2 million mobile transactions and was recognized as an industry best practice by J.D. Power. To access the Preference Center and set preferences, customers should sign-in to their accounts via the ComEd.com website, mobile site or mobile app and access the “My Reports and Alerts” section, found at www. comed.com/alerts. For more bill payment options, or to enroll in Paperless Billing, customers can visit ComEd.com or download the ComEd mobile app on their Android or Apple smartphone.

Farha Sayeed promotes egg art for noble cause BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Farha Sayeed, spouse of India’s Consulate General in Chicago, Dr. Ausaf Sayeed, has been bringing laurels through her love for an array of arts and crafts and her contributions to welfare of the downtrodden, thereby emerging as a role model for women in the Indian Sub-continent. Farha has a passion for creating Fabergestyled exotic Objets d’Art from egg shells of Ostrich, Emu, Goose, Duck, Turkey, Guinea, and Hen. These eggshells are intricately cut, carved, and ornamented, using pearls, beads, crystals, brocade, velvet, satin, golden laces, etc., and finally are mounted on beautiful silver and golden stands, making each end-product a customized masterpiece. Farha, thus, transforms a humble eggshell into a breathtakingly beautiful and precious piece of art, which can adorn even a palace with its elegance and beauty. An interesting aspect of Farha’s egg sculpting is her successful experimentation with the fusion of Indian and Islamic elements in this unique art form, which is otherwise Western. Farha’s collection of decorated eggs was first displayed by the Art Lovers’ Group of a renowned Danish Pharmaceutical Company. This was followed by a series of fullfledged solo exhibitions titled “Eggsperience” in Copenhagen, “Eggcellence” in Jeddah, “Eggxotica” in New Delhi, and “Eggspressions” in Sana’a, to great appreciation. Farha also participated in the Annual Dallas Egg Show along with other international egg artists. A member of International Egg Art Guild, Farha is considered as a pioneer in promoting

he Maldives will take your breath away! The gently swaying palm trees, the talcum white sand beaches and an emerald sea on which the sunlight dances — all have quite a mesmerizing effect on the eye of the beholder. As the aircraft eases down at Maldives capital Male, the view is picture postcard perfect. The Maldives has some 1,200 islands, separated into a series of coral atolls. The country lies just north of the Equator in the Indian Ocean. For Indians, it is one of those countries where visa is granted on arrival. So, you just need to carry your passport and

catch a flight. It has a tropical climate where the year is separated into two main seasons by the monsoons — hottest in April and coolest in December. The best time to visit is between December and April when the weather is sunny, with clear skies, low humidity and excellent water clarity. A number of gorgeous private island resorts, including two stunning properties run by Club Med, dot this archipelago of the Maldives. As one disembarks at Male airport, the sea is right there. One needs to take a boat to travel to one of the resorts. The fresh, bracing air and the fine water spray as the catamaran cuts through the

With abundant sea life, natural beauty, pleasant temperatures and sandy beaches, it is renowned as a tropical paradise. The memorable add-ons include swimming, fishing, waterskiing, snorkeling, scuba diving, kite boarding and windsurfing. Snorkelling is an experience in itself with the clear sea offering a high visibility. Take a boat ride to one of the spots, wear your flippers and gear and jump into the inviting sea. Live-in emotionally satisfying

Living together is just as emotionally rewarding as getting married, according to a new study IANS, NEW YORK

W

hen it comes to emotional health, young couples — especially women — do just as well moving in together as they do getting married, says a study. The findings suggest an evolving role of marriage among young people today, said co-author of the study Sara Mernitz from The Ohio State University in the US. As recently as the early 1990s, young people still received emotion-

al health benefits when they went from living together to getting married, Mernitz said. “Now it appears that young people, especially women, get the same emotional boost from moving in together as they do from going directly to marriage,” she said. “There is no additional boost from getting married,” Mernitz explained. Another significant finding was that the emotional benefits of cohabitation or marriage aren’t limited to first relationships.

The study found that young adults experienced a drop in emotional distress when they moved from a first relationship into cohabitation or marriage with a second partner. “The young people in our study may be selecting better partners for themselves the second time around, which is why they are seeing a drop in emotional distress,” study coauthor Claire Kamp Dush, professor at Ohio State University said. The

researchers used data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997. This study included 8,700 people who were born between 1980 and 1984 and were interviewed every other year from 2000 to 2010. The study did find some gender differences, at least for first unions of marriage or cohabitation. For those entering a first union, men experienced a decrease in emo-

tional distress only if they went directly into marriage. There was no change in distress for men who cohabited with a female partner. That may be because men are more likely than women to report cohabiting as a way to test a relationship, which has been linked in other research to subsequent relationship problems, the study said. The findings appeared online in the Journal of Family Psychology.

Have sex twice an hour to skyrocket your fertility IANS, LONDON

H Tooth decay can be reversed without drilling and filling SYDNEY: Preventative oral care can reduce the need for unpleasant dental drilling and filling by 30-50 percent, says a study. The findings suggest that tooth decay can be stopped, reversed, and prevented without the need for the traditional ‘fill and drill’ approach. “It is unnecessary for patients to have fillings because they are not required in many cases of dental decay,” said lead author Wendell Evans from University of Sydney. “Our study shows that a preventative approach has major benefits compared to current practice,” he said. The researchers said that application of high concentration fluoride

varnish by dentists to the sites of early decay, attention to home tooth brushing skills, restriction of between-meal snacks and beverages containing added sugar, and risk-specific monitoring can help prevent tooth decay. For a long time it was believed that the best way to manage tooth decay was to remove it immediately. After removing the decay, the affected tooth is then restored with a filling material. This process is referred to as ‘drilling and filling. “There is plenty of time for the decay to be detected and treated before it becomes a cavity and requires a filling,” he said.

aving sex twice in an hour can make men three times more fertile, a new study done at North Middlesex Hospital in London suggests. The researchers found that when a man provided a second sperm sample within an hour, the success rate for an infertility treatment called intrauterine insemination (IUI) shot up to an incredible 20 percent, askmen.com reported. The typical success rate for IUI is six percent. Scientists believe the finding could also help couples trying to conceive naturally. “Though this is a relatively small study, we w o m e n The finding involved in believe it is a big step may also help the IUI forward and could the couples make a major differs t u d y became pregence to pregnancy trying to nant immedirates,” said Gulam conceive ately. Many experts have suggested that men abstain from sex prior to a woman’s monthly window of peak fertility in order to increase sperm count and heighten their potency. However, the new study suggests the opposite appears to be true — the fresher the sperm sample, the better the quality of sperm.
