LONDON: An Indian-origin British orthopaedic surgeon has been awarded the prestigious ‘Hunterian Professorship’ by the Royal College of Surgeons of England for his research on stem cells in articular cartilage repair. Professor A.A. Shetty, who will deliver the the Hunterian Lecture in 2017 in Britain, has led some of the world class research in knee surgery. “I am extremely happy and proud to receive this honor which validates efforts and capabilities of medical scientists and experts. This honor is not for me but for all orthopaedic surgeons of India who believe in compassion and making a difference,” Shetty said. Shetty developed a novel gel-based stem cells therapy for regeneration of damaged cartilage that can be useful to treat patients with arthritis. The treatment involved replacing damaged or defective cartilage by injecting the patient’s own stem cells into the damaged area. Apart from his surgical innovations, Shetty is known as the first surgeon in the world to use robotics in arthroscopic knee surgery. As the demand for knee replacement is expected to go up hugely in the coming years, the new gel-based stem cells therapy would cost only one-fourth of the amount for cartilage repair surgery, Shetty added. The Hunterian Professorship, awarded annually, is named after the pioneering surgeon-scientist John Hunter, dating back over two LOS ANGELES centuries and continues to be highly regarded within the field of surgery. —IANS

Head of oil giant ExxonMobil, Tillerson does not have any experience in foreign affairs at government level ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK

R

New US visa rules may affect Indians NEW YORK: US President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to end the practice of laid-off American workers being made to train foreigners brought over to replace them, a move which could impact Indian technology workers and outsourcing companies. Trump called these incidents “demeaning” and said: “We are not going to let it happen to our people any more.” Trump made the pledge during rallies in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he returned to his campaign themes on immigration in rousing speeches. He said that during his campaign he met workers who had been told that they had to train their replacements or they would not get the severance benefits that are given after layoffs. He asserted that will not let it be repeated, but he did not say how he would do that. —IANS

US NEWS

Rex Tillerson to be Secretary of State eaching beyond the circle of squabbling politicians and loyalists, Presidentelect Donald Trump has nominated Rex Tillerson, the head of the oil giant ExxonMobil, to be the next Secretary of State. Announcing Tillerson’s selection after weeks of speculation, Trump said: “His tenacity, broad experience and deep understanding of geopolitics make him an excellent choice for Secretary of State. He will promote regional stability and focus on the core national security interests of the United States.” Like Nikki Haley, whom Trump nominated to the cabinet-level position of Ambassador to the United Nations, Tillerson does not have any diplomatic experience or involvement in foreign affairs at the government or academic levels. After a string of politicians, academics and government officials who have held the job that is fourth in line to succeed the president, the appointment of an oil giant CEO to be the face of Washington’s foreign policy signals the new direction that Trump plans to set for the US. It has a focus on trade and com-

Accepting the nomination, Tillerson said: “We must focus on strengthening our alliances, pursuing shared national interests and enhancing the strength, security and sovereignty of the United States.” The nomination was delayed by fights within Trump’s inner circle and comes three weeks after the appointment of Indian American Haley to the other important foreign policy job and follows the nominations for Defence Secretary and National Security Advisor, the other key positions with a strategic focus.

Trump meets Nadella, other tech titans NEW YORK: Pushing his America First agenda, President-elect Donald Trump met with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and 12 other technology titans in a bid to heal rifts and get them on board with his programme of creating more jobs and increasing investments in the US. Trump, who had slammed the technology sector during his campaign for exporting jobs and manufacturing overseas, hailed them as an “amazing group of people” at the start of the meeting in Trump Tower and promised them, “I am here to help you folks do well.” Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Amazon and also the owner of The Washington Post, which continues its editorial campaign against Trump, set the conciliatory tone from the other side, saying, “I’m super excited about the possibility that this could be the innovations administration.” A summary of the meeting released by the Trump transition team listed first among items discussed, “Creating more jobs for American workers.” This could impact Indian tech and business process sectors that rely heavily on outsourcing. Last week, Trump said that he would not allow foreign workers on temporary H-1B visas for technology professionals to displace American workers. Access to visas for hi-tech workers, which worried technology leaders, did not figure in the summary. Among other items discussed

were eliminating barriers preventing American companies from doing business in other countries and America’s competitive trade dynamic and market access with China. At the beginning of the meeting he told the technology leaders, “We’re gonna do fair trade deals. We’re going to make it a lot easier for you to trade across borders ...” Nadella, who was accompanied by Microsoft President Brad Smith, refused to speak to reporters as he entered and left the Trump Tower. While people in the technology sector criticized Trump during the campaign mostly because of their perception of his social and immigration policies, Nadella was silent in public. After the election, Nadella congratulated Trump in a post on LinkedIn. He also wrote, “Our commitment to our mission and values are steadfast, and in particular fostering a diverse and inclusive culture.” —IANS

US agencies disagree on Russian election hack IANS, WASHINGTON

T

he Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) and the CIA disagree on the purpose of the alleged Russian involvement in the November 8 US presidential election that resulted in Donald Trump winning the White House. The CIA has concluded that Russia intervened to help Trump win the election, since Moscow launched cyberattacks on both the Republican and Democratic parties but only disclosed damaging information about the Democrats, EFE news reported. The ODNI agrees with the CIA that the Kremlin was responsible for the hacking, but it concluded that the goal was not to help Trump, Fox News reported, citing government sources. The FBI also concluded in late October that the main goal of the Russian hacking was “to distort”

the US presidential campaign and not to assist Trump. The CIA conclusions have created a controversy in Washington, with members of Congress, including some Republicans, preparing to investigate the matter. Trump has said he does not

believe Russia interfered in the electoral process to help him, adding that the CIA’s theory has been “promoted” by Democrats “embarrassed” over their loss in the elections and unwilling to accept defeat. The claim of Russian meddling arose following the publication by

WikiLeaks of e-mails from the Democratic National Committee and from John Podesta, the chair of Democrat Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. The DNC communications showed that supposedly neutral body was anxious to ensure that Clinton defeated Senator Bernie Sanders in the Democratic primaries. The government and the Democrats said the e-mails were obtained through hacking carried out by groups aligned with Moscow, EFE news added. President Barack Obama’s administration announced last week that the intelligence agencies were in the process of putting together a report on the hacking to be submitted to Congress. Ten members of the Electoral College sent an open letter to National Intelligence Director James Clapper asking for a briefing on the probe of alleged Russian interference.

eteran BJP leader L.K. Advani said on December 15 that he feels like resigning from Parliament because of unending disruptions in both houses. He told three MPs, including Nana Patole from the Bharatiya Janata Party, that the now ailing former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee would have been very sad to witness the state of affairs. As the Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day shortly after noon, Advani remained seated in the house even as other members slowly left. Advani was approached by Idris Ali of the Trinamool Congress. Journalists in the media gallery saw two other members with Ali including Patole. Ali later told reporters that when he asked if Advani was feeling

Sasikala is yet to give her consent to becoming the AIADMK General Secretary. “Party members are requesting her to take over the mantle. She is patiently hearing them out. She has not given any indication about standing for the party post,” party spokesman C. Ponnaiyan told IANS. According to him, Sasikala seems to be of the view that there should be unanimity among AIADMK members on her name.

Rahul says PM Modi is corrupt NEW DELHI: After threatening an earth-shattering disclosure on demonetization earlier, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi said he wanted to expose Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal complicity in corruption but “a terrified government” didn’t let him speak in Parliament. Though the Prime Minister and his office didn’t react to the remarks, the government dismissed the “baseless allegations” as a “sign of desperation” by the Congress. Gandhi didn’t make the proof public. He insisted he wanted to explode the bombshell in the Lok Sabha during the ongoing winter session that has been almost completely washed away in opposition protests.

Agusta Westland report rocks Congress IANS, NEW DELHI

U

nion Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu said that the government wants to discuss the Agusta Westland VVIP chopper deal in Parliament over the allegations of the kickbacks paid to political leaders and officers. “We would like to discuss this serious diary bomb which has been published by newspapers today (Dec 15),” the Information and Broadcasting Minister told reporters outside Parliament. “These are very serious allegations. We must try to reach to the bottom of the truth as the house is in session,” Naidu said. “We must discuss this threadbare in the house because it is the biggest scam in recent years pertaining to defense deals which happened during the UPA regime,” he said. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader also said the report said that six million euros were sent to Air Force officers, 8.4 million to bureaucrats and 16 million to politician. The BJP leader’s remarks came after a newspaper report claimed that huge kickbacks were paid in the Rs 3,600 crore Agusta Westlan VVIP chopper deal. Naidu also alleged that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government tried its best to hide the truth. “UPA successfully prevented the

truth from coming out, now that there is change of government the enquiry has to be expedited and then the nation has to be told who is behind all this,” the BJP leader said. Attacking the Congress, Naidu said, “It is quite surprising that the people who are in the cesspool of corruption over the years involved in many scams and scandals they dare to put an accusing finger at the government without any basis.” Hitting out at the Congress, he said that the party’s allegations against the Prime Minister was absurd and if they had any information then they were free to make it public and then the government would respond.

CBI custody of IAF ex-chief Tyagi extended NEW DELHI: A court here has extended till December 17 the CBI custody of former Indian Air Force (IAF) chief S.P. Tyagi and two others in the Rs 3,767-crore AgustaWestland chopper deal case. Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Special Judge Arvind Kumar allowed the probe agency to quiz Tyagi, his cousin Sanjeev Tyagi and Delhi lawyer Gautam Khaitan for three more days after the central agency said the accused are required to be confronted with incriminating evidence

that has emerged during investigation. The CBI said the document regarding a proposal to amend the VVIP helicopters’ configuration was seized from Haschke’s mother’s house in Switzer-

land and it needed to be probed. The document pertains to the proposal to reduce the service ceiling of the helicopters from 6,000 meters to 4,500 meters after which AgustaWestland became eligible to supply a dozen helicopters for VVIP flying duties. Tyagi -- the first former chief of any wing of the Indian armed forces to be arrested -- and others were allegedly involved in irregularities in the procurement of 12 AW-101 VVIP helicopters from Britain-based AgustaWestland.

Will Modi’s popularity save him when the votes are counted? Nine decades later, it is a totally different world which has seen India’s and Modi’s rise. The central point of this transformation is the economic development, Modi’s trump card AMULYA GANGULY, NEW DELHI

A

month into the demonetization drive, there cannot but be a sense of worry in government circles about the unchanging ground realities with no sign of the long queues before banks and ATMs shortening any time soon. A more effective opposition would have had a field day in pillorying Narendra Modi. But, first, it is divided with two important Chief Ministers, Nitish Kumar and Naveen Patnaik, backing the Prime Minister. Secondly, the opposition appears more interested in stalling parliament than in a reasoned debate probably because there is no unanimity in its ranks about the course of action. While Mamata Banerjee wants a complete roll-back, others favor a Joint Parliamentary Committee to examine the matter. Even if there is no certainty about how long the hardship of the ordinary people will continue, or whether their patience is inexhaustible, the nomination of Modi as Time magazine’s Person of the Year in an online poll will be a

morale-booster for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). It shows, if anything, that there are a large number of people who have retained their faith in him and expect him to ride out the present storm. True, the online poll does not carry the prestige of the choice made by the magazine’s editors.

Evidently, the views of the denizens of ivory towers have greater value than of the unwashed hoi polloi. Nevertheless, it is worth noting that this is the second time that Modi has come out on top in the online exercise for whatever it is worth. He won it for the first time in 2014 when he received 16 per cent of the five million votes which

were cast. This time he received 18 per cent, well ahead of Barack Obama, Donald Trump and Julian Assange, all of whom got seven per cent although Trump finally ended up as the winner. On the online poll, the magazine said that the Indian Prime Minister’s handling of his

country’s economy was the “most positive story” of the “emerging markets”. Evidently, the present contretemps regarding the demonetization issue had no effect on popular assessment. What Modi’s selection shows, however, is how far India — and Modi personally — have come from the days when the country was seen as a basket case and Modi was persona non grata in the US in the aftermath of the Gujarat riots. In 1930, Time chose “saint” Gandhi as the Person of the Year as the “British Empire was still wondering fearfully” about 30,000 of his followers who had been jailed along with the “little half-naked brown man whose 1930 mark on world history will undoubtedly loom largest of all”. Nearly nine decades later, it is a completely different world which has seen India’s, and Modi’s, rise. The central point of this transformation is the economic development which is Modi’s trump card. Although there is not much to write about the growth trajectory — Manmohan Singh’s government had done better during the early years of his tenure.

J

ayalalithaa was to Tamil Nadu what Narendra Modi was to Gujarat. Their respective states symbolize their legacy and present unique models of development that have fueled the long-standing debate on economic growth as well as the social progress. Economists who feel that the government’s policy focus should be on boosting economic growth have cited the Gujarat model to argue that higher growth leads to better social outcomes. On the other hand, the Kerela model is exemplified as evidence that

investing more in social infrastructure can boost the productivity of people and thereby growth. Tamil Nadu, however,

Average growth rate in two decades after liberalization was 7% per annum for Tamil Nadu presents a fair counter-example. Since the early 1990s, when India undertook economic liberalization and Jayalalithaa first came to power in Tamil Nadu, both states have

maintained consistently high economic growth rates. The average growth rate in the two decades following liberalization was seven per cent per annum for Tamil Nadu and 8.3 per cent for Gujarat. Even though Gujarat has grown slightly faster, the gap between the two has consistently been growing narrow. On the healthcare front, the state has a clear commitment to free and universal healthcare covering a wide range of facilities and services. The state has also set up a computerised supply chain to ensure timely supply of free medicines in all government-run clinics.

new ceasefire deal has been reached and civilians and the wounded in east Aleppo were expected to begin evacuation from the city on Thursday, rebel officials said late on Wednesday. Under the terms of the deal, confirmed by two rebel officials, a ceasefire was expected to go into effect half an hour before midnight Aleppo time, the Guardian reported. A spokesperson for Noureddine al-Zinki, one of the armed opposition groups in Aleppo, said the deal would also allow the evacuation of wounded in Fua and Kefraya, two Shia villages in Idlib province that are besieged by rebels. The inclusion of Fua and Kefraya was a concession to Iran, which had opposed the previous ceasefire deal negotiated by Turk-

Dostum has denied the accusation, and said Eshchi was detained not by him, but by the country’s intelligence service.

ish intelligence and the Russian military. An official from Ahrar al Sham, another key rebel group, however, denied that Fua and Kefraya were part of the deal, which was reached after Turkish mediation.

Sources in East Aleppo said that shelling in the city stopped at midnight local time. The new ceasefire agreement came a day after a previous evacuation deal appeared to unravel in the face of Iranian opposition.

Tens of thousands of civilians remained trapped without food, water or medicine under a hail of artillery and airstrikes on Wednesday after Iranian-backed militia who had spearheaded the ground assault on eastern Aleppo defied a

ceasefire agreement brokered by Russia and Turkey to allow residents and opposition fighters under siege to leave the city. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said on Wednesday that government forces would continue with offensive against terrorists across the country after the city of Aleppo was liberated from militants. In an interview with Russian 24 TV channel broadcast earlier in the day, al-Assad vowed to retake central Syria’s historic city of Palmyra as the Syria Army has made major breakthrough in its recent campaign to clear Aleppo of militants, Xinhua news agency reported. Earlier on Wednesday, according to the Russian center for Syrian reconciliation, Syrian Army liberated one of the last blocks in the contested city remaining under control of terrorists, further reducing the area controlled by militants to just 2.5 square kilometers.

Twin bomb attacks had hit central Istanbul overnight on Saturday. The twin bombings killed 44 people, Turkish Health Minister Recep Akdag announced on Monday.

Rouhani instructed AEOI chief Ali Akbar Salehi to report back to him on the issue within a maximum period of Hassan Rouhani three months. Nooyi in Trump’s business council NEW YORK: Calling her one of the “pioneering CEOs,” President-elect Donald Trump appointed PepsiCo Chairman Indra Nooyi to the President’s Strategic and Policy Forum that will consult with him on implementing his economic agenda. “America has the most innovative and vibrant companies in the world, and the pioneering CEOs joining this Forum today are at the top of their fields,” Trump said. “My administration is going to work together with the private sector to improve the business climate and make it attractive

Trump’s transition team said that forum members will give Trump their views on government policy, job-creation and productivity

Earlier Trump had appointed Shalabh Kumar, the chair of the Republican Hindu Coalition, to the transition finance and the inauguration teams.

Sushma on list of 15 Global Thinkers IANS, NEW DELHI

E

xternal Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has been included in Foreign Policy magazine’s 2016 list of 15 Global Thinkers “for fashioning a novel brand of Twitter diplomacy”. In a website posting, the magazine recalled how, when around 10,000 Indian workers in Saudi Arabia faced a “food crisis” earlier this year due to job losses, Sushma Swaraj tweeted about the issue to six million followers on the social media website. “What followed was a weeks-long social media operation in which Swaraj posted information for migrants about rations provided by the Indian embassy, claims for unpaid wages, and governmentorganized transportation home,” it said.

Among others who are on the list are German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

The Hunterian Professorship, awarded annually, is named after the pioneering surgeon-scientist John Hunter, dating back over two centuries and continues to be highly regarded within the field of surgery. —IANS

England were bowled out for 195 in the morning session of the fifth day, after resuming on the overnight 182/6 in their second innings, and still trailing by 49 runs. It was the hosts’ first series win in four attempts against England with their previous triumph coming in 2008. This is only the third time that a team has suffered an innings defeat after scoring 400 runs or more in the first innings of a Test. England losing to Australia at The Oval in 1930 and Sri Lanka going down to England in Cardiff in 2011 are the only previous instances. Jonny Bairstow (51) was the first to get out in the morning, followed by Ben Stokes (18), Adil Rashid (2), and James Anderson (2). Star off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin dismantled England, pick-

Ashwin’s match haul of 12/167 is the best by any Indian bowler at the Wankhede Stadium. It is also the second best by any bowler at this venue behind England legend Ian Botham’s 13/106 in 1980. The Tamil Nadu spinner now has 24 hauls of five wickets or

more in Test matches. He has surpassed the legendary Kapil Dev to take the third place in India’s alltime list. Only leg spin great and current Indian coach Kumble and former off-spinner Harbhajan Singh have more with 35 and 25 respectively.

Olympic 2008 bronze medallist Vijender, who is on a highly impressive 7-0 unbeaten record, sounded confident during the prebout face-off against 34-year-old Cheka, the former World Boxing Federation (WBF) champion. “I am very confident ahead of my title defense. Since the last seven-eight weeks I have been

training and it was good. I am well-prepared and ready to show him who is the best,” Vijender said at the event held at a city hotel. Both the pugilists were involved in a war of words ahead of the bout to be held at the Thyagaraj Sports Complex in the national capital. Cheka termed Vijender inexperienced and claimed that his record of 43 fights with no less than 17 knockout wins will give him advantage. “Vijender has little experience in pro boxing. He is like a child who has just gotten into the professional ring and doesn’t know what all challenges will he face,” Cheka said through a translator.

In the opening match of the Group B, 2016 Rio Olympic Games silver medallist Sindhu lost the first game 12-21 but came back strongly to bag the next two games 21-8 21-15. With this win, double World Championship bronze medallist Sindhu has taken a 3-1 lead in the head-to-head against the 19-yearold two-time former junior world

Ronaldo scored 51 goals in 54 games this year while leading Real

Madrid to their record 11th Champions League trophy and Portugal to its first European Championship. The 31-year-old striker was not

on hand for the ceremony in Paris, as Real Madrid are in Japan this week for the semifinals of the Club World Cup. “This has been the best year of my career from both a team and individual level,” Ronaldo said in an interview recorded earlier at the Santiago Bernabeu. “To win the title for Portugal was what was left to achieve on my resume and it was one of the most important moments. Cyclone Vardah leaves debris in Tamil Nadu The cyclone damaged over 7,000 huts and power infrastructure with state asking for Rs 1,000 crore for relief and reconstruction IANS, CHENNAI

C

hennai residents woke up to uprooted trees/big branches blocking the roads, fallen name boards and hoardings, damaged walls and vehicles under fallen trees, power cuts and lack of milk supplies this week, a day after Cyclone Vardah ripped through the city and killed 16. The cyclone also damaged over 7,000 huts and power infrastructure with Tamil Nadu government asking for Rs 1,000 crore for relief and reconstruction. While the cyclone-hit residents

have now become accustomed to closed ATMs, it was a rude shock to many when hoteliers and shopkeepers declined to accept card payments citing non-working point of sale terminals owing to network failure. “There was no power at home and no milk. So we decided to go to a hotel and have brunch. However the hotel said they are not accepting card payments as the swipe machine was not working. We had to come back home to have a home-cooked meal,” K. Muralidharan, a public sector employee told IANS. Similar was the experience of

V.Revathi, a home maker who had to pay up the scarce cash she had when she had to purchase a bucket and a rope to draw water from her well as the power was not there. “The central government must think of natural calamities when taking major decisions that have large impact on people like demonitization. There is neither real money nor plastic money with us,” P. Kumar, a private sector employee, told IANS. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O.Panneerselvam in a late night statement said the cyclone killed 16 and announced a solatium of Rs 400,000 each to their families.

He had also requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to release a sum of Rs.1,000 crore as “on account payment” from the National Disaster Response Fund for relief and reconstruction activities. Panneerselvam told Modi that more than 10,000 electric poles have been mangled and more than 800 transformers damaged in Chennai, Kanchipuram and Thiruvallur districts. People in the residential localities after being awed by the damage caused by the cyclone started cleaning their compound of fallen trees, leaves and other muck that was blown by the cyclonic winds.

“It is as if we are in the midst of a forest,” quipped A. Viswanath, a businessman surveying the fallen trees in his locality. Over 12,000 trees were felled by cyclone in Chennai and its suburbs. In the Chennai city alone it was over 4,000 trees. Panneerselvam said conservancy staff from other districts have been brought to clear the trees and other garbage. Panneerselvam said over 4,000 trees fell. According to citizens, the number could be much more if one takes into account the trees inside the residential compounds and the parks.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah ordered a CID probe. “Meti voluntarily submitted the resignation to me. I have recommended to the Governor (Vajubhai Vala) to accept it. I have entrusted the episode to the CID (Criminal Investigation Department) for inquiry,” Siddaramaiah told reporters here. Raj Bhavan sources said Vala has accepted Meti’s resignation. Earlier in the day, high drama prevailed at the Chief Minister’s official residence when an unnerved Meti rushed to tender his resignation to Siddaramaiah within an hour after local news channels began airing the compact

the government by his misconduct. Walking out of the Chief Minister’s residence, a defiant Meti, however, denied indulging in any obscene activity and claimed he resigned from the ministry to avoid embarrassment to the ruling

party and the Siddaramaiah government. He alleged there was a conspiracy to tarnish his image through a “fake” sleaze tape. “I have resigned but I am innocent. An official investigation will prove my innocence,” Meti told the media. Meti is allegedly seen in a compromising situation with a young woman in the around four-minute footage aired so far. “As for the location, when the CD was shot and by whom is not known; the inquiry will bring out the facts,” the official said. Meti is a lawmaker of the Congress from Bagalkot district and belongs to the Kurba (shephard) community. Siddaramaiah also belongs to that community. Meti was one of the 13 ministers inducted into the three-year-old Congress government on June 19 in a major reshuffle when 14 others were sacked to make place for them.

First Hindu temple in Chicago soon BY A STAFF WRITER EST RIDGE, IL -- Plans were unveiled on December 15 for what could be Chicago’s first Hindu temple. Ald. Debra Silverstein (50th) held a community meeting in West Ridge alongside Mita Shewakramani of Shree Ganesh Hindu Temple, as well as the group’s attorney and architect Tom Buckley to take questions and show about two dozen community members renderings and examples of similar existing temples. The meeting was part of the process of obtaining a license from the city’s Zoning Board of Appeals in order to become a religious institution, a step that would require the OK from Silverstein. Plans for the storefront at 2545 W. Devon Ave. include a palace-style facade decorated with colorful and ornate details, in particular a nearly 40-foot stone pyramid-like structure that would stand atop the one-story building. The inside has a capacity for 150 people and would include a sanctuary, classroom, meditation room and hospitality room, and would offer lessons in Hindi, meditation, yoga, astrological readings and more to patrons and community members alike, Shewakramani said. There is “something missing in this community that really needs to bring people together, and we really think a temple would help with that,” Shewakramani said. “Creating something beautiful like this, people would come all over to see it.” The building would be open from 11 am-9 pm with 45-minute prayer sessions from 11:30

am-12:15 pm and 6:30-7:15 pm. Behind the building are 12 parking spaces, with another 30 slated to be set aside for those using the temple in a private parking garage across the street at Rockwell and Devon, said Elizabeth Santis, the temple’s attorney. Shewakramani said she expects about onethird of the temple’s patrons will travel by foot rather than car. The added traffic would be an “integral facet” in improving a vibrant, but struggling, commercial Devon Avenue, Shewakramani said. Shewakramani’s family owns other businesses also on Devon Avenue: Regal Jewels, Regal Traders and Sari Sapne. Her father, who runs Shree Ganesh and the stores, has lived in West Ridge since the 1970s, but said the Indian community’s Hindu residents never had a proper place to worship like other major religions in the neighborhood

did. For the last three years, he would close down one of his other storefronts for major Hindu holidays so people could celebrate together until the building at 2545 W. Devon Ave. became available earlier this year. “There’s been nothing really despite the influx of Indians and Hindu,” Shewakramani said. “We have lots of synagogues and churches and mosques, but not temples.” Now, West Ridge’s “Little India” portion of Devon could finally get its due, Santis said. “This is a really, really exciting project to bring a new temple to Devon Avenue, which of course is the heart of the Indian community here in Chicago,” Santis said. “This is one of the great neighborhoods in Chicago in that it is probably one of the most multi-cultural neighborhoods that we have in the city, and we want to make sure everyone in the community is represented.”

Ald. Debra Silverstein

The building was formerly occupied by Bank of America until earlier this year when Shree Ganesh Temple of Chicago began using it. The palace-style Hindu temple would be the first in Chicago, though two other Hindu organizations exist: the International Society for Krishna Consciousness temple in Rogers Park and Shivalya Hindu Cultural Center in River North. Other major Hindu temples are at least 35 miles away in Chicago suburbs like Aurora, Grayslake and Lemont. Community members who turned out for the meeting offered positive anecdotes of spending time with members of the temple, as well as offering encouragement and support--an aspect of the neighborhood Silverstein said she prides herself on. “I pride myself on the diversity of Devon Avenue,” Silverstein said. “I’m hoping that since you all approve of this that we should expect some good things to come from the Hindu temple.”

I’m no longer trying to be superwoman: Vidya NEW DELHI: Versatile actress Vidya Balan, who will clock four years of marital bliss with producer Siddharth Roy Kapur, says she finds balancing life between home and work an “overrated” concept, and that she is no longer trying to be “superwoman”. Asked how does she juggle work and home, Vidya told IANS: “I don’t juggle. I’m no longer trying to be superwoman. I am a woman who when I’m working, I’m working, when I’m home, I’m home, when I’m chilling, I’m chilling. Sometimes, when I don’t feel like doing anything, I don’t do anything. “So, I think this balancing is really overrated because women are constantly asked to balance home and work and it’s unfair,” she added. Having said that, the actress, who was recently seen on the big screen in Kahaani 2, said when she is away from home and is not there for a special occasion with her family or her husband, she does feel “guilty”. “Maybe I feel guilty because I am a girl. Maybe a man wouldn’t feel the same way because you take it for granted that a man sometimes can’t make it to certain special occasions because they are working. “We (women) still feel that we should work and be there (for

Hate crime victim says she made up the story

BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY-- A Muslim student who said she was harassed on the subway by drunken, hate-spewing white men shouting “Donald Trump!” lied to the police because she broke her curfew. Yasmin Seweid, 18, joined a growing list of local and national alleged hate-crime victims when she told cops she was taunted December 1 on the No. 6 train by three men who called her a terrorist and tried to snatch her hijab off her head while straphangers did nothing. But Seweid finally broke down on December 7 and was arrested after she admitted to detectives that it was all a big lie. “Nothing happened, and there was no victim,” a police source said. Police sources say Seweid made up the story because she didn’t want to get in trouble for breaking her curfew after being out late drinking with friends. She faces up to a year in jail for each charge. She provided police a description of the suspects, one of whom cops at one point thought

they spotted on video following her when she got off the subway at Grand Central Terminal. “She had numerous opportunities to admit nothing happened and she kept sticking by her story,” a police source said. The New Hyde Park, L.I., teen even posted an emotional account of the attack on Facebook. For a while, the police believed inconsistencies in her story to be nothing more than typical lapses by someone who was traumatized. But the doubts increased when detectives could not find witnesses or any significant video. Then she left home and was reported missing on

On December 7, after again being confronted with questions from detectives, she said she had made it all up, citing family problems. Seweid admitted that she lied to throw off her parents, who are Egyptian immigrants, because they disapproved of her christian boyfriend, a source said. Seweid’s father, Syeed, 55, said he didn’t know why his daughter made up the story.

The YMCA is working with local law enforcement to assist in their investigations of these crimes and are continuing to increase the security and monitoring of the parking lots at its branches, according to a notice sent to members. The latest break-ins were reported in November at the YMCA in the village of Manlius. But within the last year, numerous car break-ins have been reported at the YMCAs in Lysander, Skaneateles and Auburn. In September, 27 cars were broken into while left at a Lysander YMCA. In January last, 10 cars were broken into at the Skaneateles YMCA. Only two weeks before the Skaneateles incident, Auburn’s YMCA also had cars targeted. The YMCA is encouraging members and guests to leave valuables at home. “Do not leave these items, such as bags and purses, in your car, even if you believe they are well-hidden,” according to the letter sent out last week. “If you bring your valuables into the YMCA, please keep them with you or in a locked locker.” The association said they are aware of this type of activity happening at other health care clubs and parks where runners exercise. “If you see any suspicious activity in our parking lots, we encourage you to call 911 and alert our staff,” the letter said

Buy American, hire Americans: Trump

BY A STAFF WRITER NEW YORK , NY -- President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to end the practice of laid-off American workers being made to train foreigners brought over to replace them, a move which could impact Indian technology workers and outsourcing companies. Tr ump called these incidents “demeaning” and said: “We are not going to let it happen to our people anymore.” Trump made the pledge on December 9 during rallies in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he returned to his campaign themes on immigration in rousing speeches. In his speeches, Trump outlined his “America First” agenda that could affect India in two ways: Reducing the employment prospects of skilled Indians in the US and undercutting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambitious program of “Make in India” for exporting. “We are building our country with American hands, and American workers,” he said. “My administration will follow two rules, buy American and hire Americans.” He said that during his campaign he met workers who had been told that they had to train their replacements or they would

Donald Trump

not get the severance benefits that are given after layoffs. He asserted he will not let it be repeated, but he did not say how he would do that. Several companies have been accused of laying off their employees and making them train workers from India brought in on H-1B visas by the staffing companies that got the outsourcing contracts. In a widely-publicized case that sparked outrage, Walt Disney laid off 250 workers and had many of them train their replacements brought in by Cognizant and HCL in 2016.

Those workers were now suing Walt Disney, HCL and Cognizant alleging they broke laws against using H-1B workers to replace American employees. Trump said that one of his first tasks would be to issue an executive order for the Labor Department to investigate visa abuses that lead to Americans losing jobs or have their earnings cut. While speaking of tightening enforcement of immigration laws, Trump also opened his arms to legal immigrants. “We are going to have hundreds of thousands of people, we want them to come in,” he said. “But they are going to come in legally.” Reiterating his campaign to build a wall again along the Mexican border to keep out illegal immigrants, he, however, said that “we are going to have big beautiful doors in that wall” for legal immigrants to enter the country “through a process legally.” In fighting terror, Trump said “I will suspend immigration and refugee admission from regions where they cannot be safely processed or vetted.” He did not say which countries would be affected. “We are going to have extreme vetting,” he said. “We will do everything in our power to keep radical Islamic terrorists the hell out of our country.”

NJ is progressing at a slow pace BY A STAFF WRITER ERSEY CITY, NJ -- The most remarkable thing about post-recession New Jersey isn’t that the state is struggling but it’s how indiscriminate the pain has been. A middling farmer in Cumberland County. A poor resident of crime-torn Newark. A member of the state’s highest tax bracket in Somerset County. All of them are likely worse off today than they were a decade ago. Just-released census data shows wide swaths of the Garden State remain slow to get back on their feet following the Great Recession. There are exceptions, of course. Urbanadjacent communities like Maplewood,

J

Summit or Westfield have seen growth in most key economic areas, but overall the news is not good. Census data show median income in the state fell nearly 5 percent from the years leading up to the recession when compared to the five years that followed, outpacing the

G N I M O C P U

national decline during that time period. Housing values, too, have dropped 20 percent in New Jersey between those time periods, while they fell only 13 percent nationally. However, housing costs have the opposite trend--New Jersey housing costs fell less than the national average, and remain higher than the rest of the nation. A closer look at year-to-year data reveals weak growth in the past few years. New Jersey was ranked last in the nation in income growth from 2014 to 2015. The state has been lagging behind the country in unemployment as well, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. While unemployment has dropped from its high in 2009, the state has not quite reached pre-recession levels.

Pharmacy sued for painkiller sales BY A STAFF WRITER HARLESTON, WV -- West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey is suing Larry’s Drive-In Pharmacy of Madison, alleging that it has provided nearly 10 million doses of highly addictive painkillers for a county with fewer than 25,000 people over an 11year period. None of the other 11 pharmacies in the county, including three operated by national chains, have provided anywhere near that amount, according to the attorney general. The pharmacy has helped to fuel the state’s opioid prescription crisis, Morrisey said. “Such an extraordinary volume should raise a red flag,” Morrisey said. “Every facet of the prescription drug supply chain must do its part to identify potential abuse.” Larry’s Drive-In Pharmacy has not flagged suspicious prescriptions and failed to figure out whether or not it was giving out a suspicious number of pills, Morrisey said. According to a statement issued by the attorney general, the lawsuit is seeking civil penalties and punitive damages, and asks for an injunction against the pharmacy:

Fishman has announced that Vijay Patel, 59, of Parsippany, New Jersey, owner and operator of Mobile Diagnostic Testing of NJ LLC, a company based in the same town, pleaded guilty two years ago to a criminal information charging him with health care fraud related to this conduct. Today’s civil complaint alleges Vijay Patel violated the False Claims Act. According to the complaint, Patel had an associate not identified in the press release, who was a cardiologist, and also a participant in the Medicare program.

Anxiety drug may help breast cancer patients Many women — as many as 50 per cent — experience joint pain and stiffness as a side effect of the therapy IANS, NEW YORK

A

drug typically used to treat depression and anxiety can significantly reduce joint pain in postmenopausal women being treated for early stage breast cancer, according to study. The researches conducted a trial to test whether duloxetine, a depression and anxiety drug, could alleviate pain caused by aromatase inhibitors, a common breast cancer treatment that’s particularly effective with postmenopausal women. “We’ve shown that this treatment is a potential option for women,” said N. Cobra vanom may help surgeons see cancer wall IANS, MOSCOW

I

n collaboration with researchers from Assam’s Tezpur University, Russian scientists have developed a substance-based cobra venom and quantum dots that can glow and help surgeons see the boundaries of cancerous tumour.

Surgeons need to see the boundaries of the cancer because the more precisely the boundary is marked, the more effective the operation would be. The researchers synthesized the substance from snake venom alpha-neurotoxins and semiconductor fluorescent nanoparticles, news agency Sputnik reported.

Running is actually good for knee joints: Study NEW YORK: Contrary to popular perception, running actually reduces inflammation in knee joints and slows the process that leads to osteoarthritis, a study said. This idea that long-distance running is bad for your knees might be a myth,” said study co-author Matt Seeley, Associate Professor of exercise science at Brigham Young University in Utah, US. In the study published in the European Journal of Applied Physiology, the researchers measured inflammation markers in the knee joint fluid of several healthy men and women aged 18-35, both before and after running. The researchers found that the

markers they were looking for in extracted synovial fluid — two cytokines, GM-CSF and IL-15 — in concentration in the participants after 30 minutes of running. When same fluids were extracted before and after non-running condition, inflammation markers stayed similar.

Some women stop taking their medication to get relief.

Heavy drinking during youth can disrupt brain development IANS, LONDON

E

xcessive alcohol use during adolescence can disrupt the development of brain and increase risk of substance use disorder later in life, a study says. “The maturation of the brain is still ongoing in adolescence, and especially the frontal areas and the cingulate cortex develop until the twenties. Our findings strongly indicate that heavy alcohol use may disrupt this maturation process,” said first author of the study Noora Heikkinen from University of Eastern Finland. Cingulate cortex has an important role in impulse control, and volumetric changes in this area may play an important role in the development of a substance use disorder later in life. The study — published in the journal Addiction — performed magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain structure on young and healthy, but heavy-drinking adults who had been heavy drinkers throughout their adolescence, as well as on age-matched light-drinking control participants. They participated in three cross-sectional studies conducted over the course of ten years, in 2005, 2010 and 2015. The participants were 13 to 18 years old at the onset of the study. All participants were

academically successful, and the prevalence of mental health problems did not differ between the two groups.

MRI of the brain revealed statistically significant differences between the groups Although the heavy-drinking participants had used alcohol regularly for ten years, approximately six-nine units once a

week, none of them had a diagnosed alcohol use disorder. MRI of the brain revealed statistically significant differences between the groups. Among the heavy-drinking participants, grey matter volume was decreased in the anterior cingulate cortex bilaterally as well as in the right insula. While cingulate cortex has an important role in impulse control, structural changes in the insula, may reflect a reduced sensitivity to alcohol’s negative subjective effects, and contribute to the development of a substance use disorder.
