ndia and the US have reiterated their commitment to cooperate in the fight against international terrorism even as the two sides agreed to boost economic cooperation following the first ever meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump. In a strong message to Islamabad, the US and India have told Pakistan to ensure its territory is not used for terror attacks on other countries and asked it to bring to justice terrorists blamed for attacks in Mumbai and other places in India. A joint statement issued after Trump and Modi met here stressed that terrorism was a global scourge that must be fought and terrorist safe havens rooted out in every part of the world. The statement said India and the US will fight together “this grave challenge to humanity”. The statement specifically referred to the terror attacks in Mumbai (2008) and Pathankot (2016) that it said were perpetrated by Pakistan-based groups and said the terrorists must be expeditiously brought to justice. The two countries expressed their commitment to strengthen cooperation against terrorist threats from groups including Al Qaeda, ISIS, Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM),

he meeting between US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sent a clear message around the world that ties bewteen the two countries are going to be “substantially closer”, Energy Secretary Rick Perry has said. “There was a picture yesterday that I happened to see... of these two individuals embracing each other. And I think that was a clear message around the world that the US and India are going to be substantially closer,” Perry said at a press briefing this week. “Energy is going to play a very, very important role in that,” he added. Perry, talking about the working dinner the US President hosted for the Indian leader, said Trump and
US Energy Secretary Rick Perry.
Modi discussed LNG (liquefied natural gas), clean coal and nuclear side among other things. “At dinner, we talked about the three areas of which there will be great back-and-forth cooperation — deal-making, if you will. One of those is in LNG.” “The other side of that is in clean coal. Thirdly is on the nuclear side.”
rime Minister Narendra Modi has presented US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania a range of gifts including a hamper containing a traditional, handcrafted silver bracelet and hand-woven shawls from Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. During his first face-to-face meeting with the First Family at the White House, Modi also gave Trump a folio containing an original commemorative postage stamp issued by India 52 years ago to mark the death centenary of former US President Abraham Lincoln. The stamp honored the memory of Lincoln and symbolized the closeness of the ideals he stood for and which drove Mahatma Gandhi, the Indian Prime Minister’s Office said in a tweet. ‘Watered down’ US travel ban
The White House sets new revised guidelines for visa applicants from six Muslim-majority countries IANS, WASHINGTON
A
“watered down”, revised version of US President Donald Trump’s fiercely litigated travel ban was set to be finally put into effect from June 29 evening, the media reported. The White House set new guidelines for visa applicants from six Muslim-majority countries — Libya, Syria, Iran, Somalia, Yemen and Sudan — and all refugees, requiring them to have a “close” family or business tie to the US. The new guidelines were issued
Trump to attend French Bastille Day WASHINGTON: The White House said that US President Donald Trump had accepted French President Emmanuel Macron’s invitation to visit France on Bastille Day next month. “President Trump looks forward to reaffirming America’s strong ties of friendship with France, to celebrating this important day with the French people, and to commemorating the 100th anniversary of America’s entry into World War I,” said a statement by the White House this week. “The two leaders — Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron — will further build on the strong counter-terrorism cooperation and economic partnership between the two countries, and they will discuss many other issues of mutual concern,” Xinhua news agency cited the statement. The French invitation came amid public disagreement between Macron and Trump on Trump’s decision to pull the US out of the Paris Agreement signed by 196 parties in Paris. Shortly after Trump announced his decision early this month to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, Macron hit back in a televised speech with a call to “make our planet great again”, a direct jab at Trump’s campaign slogan to “make America great again”. Macron also appealed to US scientists and other US citizens disappointed by Trump’s decision to “come and work here (in France) with us to work together on concrete solutions for our climate”. —IANS
in response to the Supreme Court’s ruling partially restoring Trump’s controversial travel ban. According to the new guidelines, sent to overseas posts on Wednesday, visa applicants must prove a relationship with a parent, spouse, son, daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law or sibling in the US, CNN quoted a senior administration official as saying. If the applicant cannot sufficiently establish such a close relationship, he or she will be banned for 90 days if one is from the six Muslim-majority countries, and 120 days if one is a refugee from any country.
The guidelines have not yet been posted by the State Department or the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and could be subject to change, the official said. Advocacy groups such as Amnesty International plan to send researchers to US airports, such as the Washington Dulles International Airport and New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport on Thursday, to monitor developments and observe implementation of the ban in case any disputes arise. DHS spokesperson David Lapan confirmed to CNN that the President’s revised executive order

U
S Vice President Mike Pence has said he is planning to visit India. Pence made the remarks after Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended an invitation to him to visit India. “I told him... one of my ambitions was to be the first Governor from Indiana to visit India,” Pence said during the US-India Business Council’s 42nd Annual Leadership Summit this week. “I didn’t get it done then, but the Prime Minister and I had a nice chuckle, because he told me that the words ‘India ana’ means ‘Come to India’.” Pence said the US plans to collaborate with India on issues such as terrorism and commerce, eventually aiming to quadruple the

cause of freedom and our commitment to democracy. “President Trump recognizes that the US relationship with India is one of the most important strategic relationships in the 21st century,” Pence said.
Donald Trump is unpopular worldwide, says a survey IANS, WASHINGTON
P
resident Donald Trump and many of his key policies are broadly unpopular around the globe, and ratings for the US have also declined steeply in many nations, a new survey has revealed. The survey spanning 37 nations by the Washington-based Pew Research Centre showed a median of just 22 per cent has confidence in Trump to do the right thing when it
comes to international affairs. This stands in contrast to the final years of Barack Obama’s presidency, when a median of 64 per cent expressed confidence in Trump’s predecessor to direct America’s role in the world. The sharp decline in how much global citizens trust the US President is especially pronounced among some of America’s closest allies in Europe and Asia, as well as neighboring Mexico and Canada. Across the 37 nations polled,
Trump (in picture) gets higher marks than Obama in only two countries: Russia and Israel, the survey said. According to the survey, globally 65 per cent think Trump is intoler-

Nomination for FBI director sent to Senate WASHINGTON: The White House has formally sent to the Senate the nomination of Christopher Wray as the new director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the media reported. The Justice Department released a statement from Wray, who said he was “honored and humbled” by the nomination and looks forward to his confirmation by the Senate, reports The Hill magazine. “From my earliest days working with agents as a line prosecutor to my time working with them at the Department of Justice in the aftermath of 9/11, I have been inspired by the men and women of the FBI — inspired by their professionalism, integrity, courage, and sacrifice for the public.” Wray said.

In the closing years of Obama’s term, a median of 64 per cent had a positive view of the US, while now, just 49 per cent are favorably inclined toward America. The most negative views of the US are in Germany (62 per cent), Spain (60 per cent) and the Netherlands (59 per cent). China’s Xi Jinping (28 per cent) and Russia’s Vladimir Putin (27 per cent) also get poor marks, though neither is rated as negatively as Donald Trump.

Modi-truMp special special report X
US clears sale of Guardian drones to India The two countries have also decided to expand their maritime security cooperation IANS, NEW DELHI
T
he US has cleared sale of predator Guardian drones to India with the two countries pledging to deepen their defense and security cooperation. The joint statement issued after talks between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the two countries look forward to working together on advanced defense equipment and technology “at a level commensurate with that of the closest allies and partners of the United States.” “Reflecting the partnership, the United States has offered for India’s consideration the sale of Sea Guardian Unmanned Aerial Systems, which would enhance India’s capabilities and promote shared security interests,” it said.
The two countries resolved to expand their maritime security cooperation and announced their intention to build on the implementation of their “White Shipping” data sharing arrangement, which enhances collaboration on maritime domain awareness. Trump welcomed Modi’s strong support for United States to join as an Observer in the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium. The two leaders noted the importance of the upcoming Malabar naval exercise and expressed their determination to expand their engagements on shared maritime objectives and to explore new exercises. The US expressed strong support for India’s early membership in the Nuclear Suppliers Group, the Wassenaar Arrangement, and the Australia Group. It also reaffirmed the support of
the United States for India’s permanent membership on a reformed UN Security Council Earlier, in his remarks to the media, Modi said defense cooperation between India and US was very significant in the light of security challenges. “ “Peace, prosperity and stability in the Indo-Pacific region are the main aims of our strategic cooperation. The increase of possibilities in the region and securing our strategic interests from emerging challenges will guide the parameters of our cooperation. We will continue to work with the US in this,” he said. He said the two countries have also decided to expand their maritime security cooperation. “The bilateral defense, technology, trade and manufacturing partnership will be mutually beneficial,” Modi said, adding that they

had also discussed their strategic interests concerning international issues. Trump said the security partnership between the two countries was incredibly important. “Our militaries are working every day to enhance cooperation between our military forces. And next month, they will join together with the Japanese navy to take place in the largest maritime exer-
cise ever conducted in the vast Indian Ocean.” Reports had said earlier that the US has cleared the sale of 22 American-made Guardian surveillance drones for India ahead of Modi’s visit. The deal is estimated to be worth $2-3 billion. The drones can be used for wide-area, long- endurance maritime intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions.

P
rime Minister Narendra Modi made his most compelling invitation to American business to invest in India, telling them that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) that will come into effect from July 1 could be a subject of study in US business schools. Modi, on a two-day visit to the US capital, held a roundtable on June 25 with a group of top executives of American companies. Among those who attended were Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Apple CEO Tim Cook and Mastercard President Ajay Banga. “The implementation of the landmark initiative of GST could be a subject of studies in US business schools,” Modi told the gathering, according to a tweet by Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesman Gopal Baglay. “The whole world is looking at India. 7,000 reforms alone

have been done by the government for ease of business,” Modi said, as per another tweet by Baglay. Foreign investors too have been eagerly looking forward to the rollout of the single pan-India GST, which will replace the existing myriad central and state levies on both goods and services. “Growth of India presents win-win partnership for India and US both. Amer-
ican companies have a great opportunity to contribute,” said Modi. “If America becomes stronger, India will be a natural beneficiary.” Current India-US bilateral trade is balanced adversely against the latter, while New Delhi has earlier reaffirmed that this trade was a “win-win situation” for both countries. Indian Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in New
WASHINGTON: Apple CEO Tim Cook is reported to have told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that his company is positive about the production of the iPhone SE in Bengaluru. Cook was among the 21 US corporate leaders who met Modi in Washington. According to industry sources, Cook apprised the Prime Minister about the production of Apple’s popular iPhone SE model at its Bengaluru facility and the app developers working for Apple.
Delhi earlier this month that while Indian goods exported to the US were very competitively priced, Indian professionals had contributed much to the growth of the American IT industry.
In May, Apple began the initial production of a small number of iPhone SE in Bengaluru, where it had opened its App Accelerator to provide specialized support for developers earlier this year in March. “iPhone SE is the most popular and powerful phone with a four-inch display in the world and we’ll begin shipping to domestic customers this month,” Apple had told IANS in an email earlier this year. —IANS
On June 25, the Prime Minister pointed out opportunities for tourism through developing hotels in the “PPP (public private partnership) model” at 500 railway stations, Baglay said.

India, US vow to fight terror In a clear signal to Pakistan, Narendra Modi and Donald Trump decide to fight against terrorism and destroying the hideouts of the terrorists
Pak criticizes India-US statement
IANS, WASHINGTON
I
ndia and the US have reiterated their commitment to cooperate in the fight against international terrorism even as the two sides agreed to boost economic cooperation following the first ever meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump. The two countries expressed their commitment to strengthen cooperation against terrorist threats from groups including Al Qaeda, ISIS, Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM),
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan said an India-US joint statement asking Islamabad not to allow cross-border terror attacks from its soil won’t help achieve durable peace in South Asia. The Foreign Ministry said the joint statement, issued after a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Washington, was “singularly unhelpful in achieving strategic stability and durable peace in the South Asian region”. The US-India statement called on Pakistan to ensure that its territory was not used to launch terrorist

Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), D-Company and their affiliates. The LeT was blamed for the Mumbai mayhem of November 2008 that killed 166 Indians and foreigners including Americans. The Jaish was accused of attacking the
Indian Air Force base at Pathankot in Punjab, leaving seven security personnel dead. India appreciated the US decision to designate the Pakistanbased Hizbul Mujahideen leader Syed Salahuddin as a Specially
Designated Global Terrorist - just ahead of the Trump-Modi meet of Monday — “as evidence of the commitment of the US to end terror in all its forms”. In their remarks to the media after delegation level talks, both Modi and Trump spoke of their commitment to combat terrorism. Stating that he and Trump held talks on a wide range of issues pertaining to the India-US relationship, he said: “We consider America a valued partner in our flagship programs”. The Prime Minister said that trade, commerce and investment were key areas of cooperation
attacks on other countries. It also urged Pakistan to expeditiously bring to justice the perpetrators of a series of terror attacks “perpetrated by Pakistan-based groups”. “By failing to address key sources of tension and instability in the region, the (India-US) statement aggravates an already tense situation,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement. The Foreign Ministry also expressed serious concerns over an US arms deal with India, which it said would disturb military balance in South Asia. —IANS
between the two sides. “Technology, innovation and knowledge economy are also areas we are actively looking at,” he said. “Increasing productivity, job creation and breakthrough technologies will be the driving force of our ties.” Modi also invited Trump to visit India along with his family. On his part, Trump said that both India and the US have been struck by the evils of terrorism, “and we are both determined to destroy terrorist organizations and the radical ideology that drives them.” “We will destroy radical Islamic terrorism,” he said.

he meeting between US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sent a clear message around the world that ties bewteen the two countries are going to be “substantially closer”, Energy Secretary Rick Perry has said.
Interacting with the Indian diaspora here on June 25, Modi said their success is due to the supportive environment in the US, and his government is working to provide the same environment back home. “Your heart always asks when would our country become like this (the US)... I assure you that this will happen in your lifetime,” Modi said. Saying that Indians in America have not just helped India progress but also the US, Modi said that success and action of the Indian diaspora is still echoing in the world. “You are the same people but your success story has a simple reason, it’s because you got supportive environment here,” he said. The Prime Minister added that “125 crore equally talented Indians are there back in India, they are now getting supportive environment and soon we will develop India soon. With such a resolve, the country is developing in a pace never seen before.” Calling corruption as the root cause due to which “the previous governments were changed in India”, Modi said his government has emerged corruption-free in the last three years. “Governments were changed because of corruption. The common people hated this... There has been not a single blot on our
government in the past three years. And governance is being modified so that honesty becomes an in-build process. “Technology is helping with that,” Modi said. “Increased usage of technology brings transparency in systems. Shergill is the first turbaned Sikh to be appointed to the judiciary in Canada, the World Sikh Organization (WSO) of Canada said, news portal Voice Online reported. Jody Wilson-Raybould, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, announced the appointment this week under the new judicial application process announced on October 20 last year. Welcoming the decision, WSO President Mukhbir Singh said: “The appointment of Justice Shergill is another milestone for the Sikh community in Canada. It is a matter of great pride that today we have the first turbaned Sikh appointed to the judiciary in Canada.” The appointment was made with immediate effect as Justice Shergill replaces Justice EA Arnold-Bailey, who retired on May 31, the report said. Sikh couple in UK denied adoption over ‘cultural heritage’ IANS, LONDON
A
Sikh couple in Britain were refused permission to adopt a white child here because of their “cultural heritage” and were instead advised to adopt a child from India. Sandeep and Reena Mander, who are British-born and live in Berkshire, said that they were rejected by a local adoption agency, Adopt Berkshire, “as only white children were available”, the Daily Mail reported this week. The agency said that white British or European parents would be given preference, according to the report. The couple, in their 30s, said they were willing to give a home to a child of any race. They are now legally challenging the decision, with the backing of the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), claiming discrimination in the provision of the services. The Manders have applied to
Slough county court, seeking a declaration that the policy should allow them to adopt, the daily said. “Giving an adopted child — no matter what race — the security of a loving home was all we wanted to do,” Sandeep said. “What we didn’t expect was a refusal for us to even apply for adoption, not because of our inca-
pability to adopt, but because our cultural heritage was defined as ‘Indian/Pakistani’,” he told the Times newspaper. David Isaac, Chairman of the EHRC, said: “There are many children who are waiting for a loving family like Sandeep and Reena to help give them a better life. To be denied this because of so-called
cultural heritage is wrong.” The Manders said they had been trying to conceive for about seven years, and had gone through 16 IVF sessions, before arriving on a decision to adopt. Speaking to a BBC programme, Reena added that it was “hurtful” to be told they couldn’t adopt because of their “cultural heritage”. “It’s quite hurtful that we were written off at the first hurdle,” she lamented. Georgina Calvert-Lee, who is representing the Manders, said: “It is unacceptable for a child to be denied loving adoptive parents solely on the grounds that the child does not share the same racial or cultural heritage as the adopters.” Adoption agencies in Britain can prioritize parents from the same ethnic group, but in 2014 adoption rules were changed to make it easier for children to be placed with parents from a different ethnic background.

police helicopter dropped grenades on the Venezuelan Supreme Court in a daring attack escalating the months-long crisis engulfing the regime of President Nicolas Maduro. The helicopter was reportedly stolen and piloted by an officer in the country’s investigative police force, Oscar Perez. As it strafed the court building and the Interior Ministry in Caracas on Tuesday, the attackers fired shots and lobbed grenades on the court, officials said. Maduro condemned the incident as an “attempted coup”, saying “terrorists” were behind the offensive and that an operation was underway to track down the perpetrators, CNN reported. No one was injured in the attack and one of the grenades failed to
Cyberattack has stopped: Ukraine KIEV: A massive global cyberattack which began in Ukraine against its institutions and corporate networks has been halted, authorities said. According to a government statement, all enterprises, including state-owned ones, were now operating normally, Efe news reported. The situation was “under the full control” of cybersecurity specialists who were working to recover lost data, the government said. Meanwhile, Boryspil International Airport on the outskirts of capital Kiev was still without its main server. Deputy airport manager Yevgueni Dijne told television channel 112.Ukraina that airlines were working autonomously with their own IT systems and the main departures and arrivals boards were being updated manually every 15 minutes. A type of ransomware called Petya hit dozens of European businesses and institutions on Tuesday, most of them based in Ukraine and Russia, in a cyberattack similar to another in May that affected more than 200,000 users in 150 countries. According to Russian cybersecurity company Group-IB, Petya is similar to the WannaCry virus, responsible for last month’s attack that paralysed thousands of computers. —IANS

Flanked by a group of armed men, Perez claimed to be speaking on behalf of a coalition of military, police officers and civil officials, said the report. In his video message, Perez said he was a pilot in the special response unit of Venezuela’s Criminal Investigative Police and demanded that Maduro step down. Photographs posted online showed a helicopter with the ini-

F
ollowing delegation-level talks headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Dutch counterpart Mark Rutte, India and the Netherlands on Tuesday reaffirmed their commitment to combat terrorism and prevent radicalization that could lead to violent extremism and called for a collective effort by the international community against this scourge. “Expressing concern about the serious and grave threat posed by the spread of terrorism and violent extremism to both countries and the world, the Prime Ministers reaffirmed their commitment to combat terrorism and prevent radicalization that could lead to violent extremism and reiterated the need for a unified and collective effort by the international community to eliminate terrorism through a holistic approach,” a joint communique stated. It said both Modi and Rutte stressed that there can be no justification for acts of terror on any grounds whatsoever and agreed that there should be zero-tolerance on terrorism. Like several other European nations, the Netherlands has also been a target of terrorism. “They affirmed that the fight against terrorism should not only

seek to disrupt and bring to justice terrorists, terror organizations and networks, but should also identify, hold accountable and take strong measures against all those who encourage, support and finance terrorism, provide sanctuary to terrorists and terror groups, and falsely extol their virtues,” the statement said. In what can be seen as a veiled reference to Pakistan, it said “both leaders strongly condemned the use of double standards in addressing the menace of terrorism and agreed to strengthen cooperation in combating terrorism both at the bilateral level and within the multilateral system”.
The two Prime Ministers also called for early conclusion of negotiations on the India-initiated Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism. Earlier ahead of their meeting, in a joint address to the media with Rutte, Modi said that India and the Netherlands were on the same page on several global issues. “Today the world is interdependent, inter-connected. Kuldeep more lethal on dry wickets: Kohli Kuldeep took three wickets in the 105-run victory against the West Indies in the second One-day International IANS, PORT OF SPAIN

ndian skipper Virat Kohli heaped praise on left-arm leg spinner Kuldeep Yadav for his three-wicket haul in the 105run victory against the West Indies in the second One-day International (ODI) cricket match at Queen’s Park Oval. Kuldeep Yadav in his 3/50 picked up West Indies opener Shai Hope (81) and middle order batsmen Evin Lewis (21) and Jason Holder (29). Carribbean opener Hope looked in good touch, scoring at a strike rate of 92.04 but failed to carry his team to victory as he was adjudged leg before wicket off Yadav’s delivery. Middle-order batsmen Lewis and Holder fell prey to Yadav in similar fashion after being
stumped by Indian wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni. “When batsmen try to attack, he can slow his pace down, just beat the batsmen halfway into the pitch. So he (Kuldeep Yadav) is quite amazing with what he does

Women’s World Cup: India favorites against WIndies NEW DELHI: Fresh after a 35-run victory over strong title contenders England in their opening encounter of the ongoing Women’s Cricket World Cup, India have displayed a swagger and quick moves on the field that make them look ominous. The Indian eves were all prepared to take on the brilliant yet erratic West Indies on County Ground, Taunton. The West Indies are the injured tigresses on the prowl waiting for their first win after a humiliating eight-wicket drubbing by the Australian girls who are prone to middleorder collapse against big teams. In their first encounter against the Aussies, the West Indies lost their last seven wickets for less than 60 runs. In the head to head records, India have a 5-0 advantage over the West Indies in World Cup ODIs over a stretch of two decades — 1993 to 2013. The West Indies have set a brilliant record in scoring runs and are consistently improving their rankings in ODIs, but are prone to sudden batting collapses. Having finished as runners-up position in the last World Cup where India were seventh, the West Indies have already set a barometer against India, as they are seeking their first World Cup victory. Leading the attack is Diandra Dottin, the hardest hitter of the leather ball in the women’s game. Skipper

The Indian bowlers will have to refrain from bowling anything in the arch and short deliveries which are likely to be dispatched towards, or over the boundary ropes with disdain. The Carribbeans are mercurial and place their strength in chasing. The Indian skipper also mentioned that Yadav’s cross seam deliveries make it hard for the batsmen to read him from the wrist. “It becomes difficult when he bowls cross-seam deliveries turning both ways. Usually bowlers bowl seam-up deliveries turning in and cross seam bowling the googly. But he can do both bowling cross seam, so that it becomes difficult to pick from the wrist,” Kohli said. A wristspinner is always a bonus, something we have identified now in this series, so all sorts of options are open. “The 2019 World Cup, we’ve got 15 players here, then we’ve got a pool of 10 or 12 back home who

The Indian took less than 30 minutes to outclass Olympic champion Cheng Long of China in straight games 22-20, 21-16. This was the third straight Super Series final win for Srikanth who had only last week secured the Indonesian Open. In the first game, the 24-year-

A focused Srikanth then changed his strategy and started playing an attacking game to edge past the World No.6. The second game saw a much improved performance from the Indian. In a totally contrasting game, Srikanth played long rallies. The Chinese shuttler struggled and surrendered the game.

Iftekhar Shareef actively hosts many dignitaries in Chicago
one may assume that perhaps Shareef had it easy in life. However prod him to trace his journey backwards and you will come across an inspiring tale of making ends meet, beginning from the scratch and trying to find a footing in a new land. Shareef who has remained incredibly humble through his initial rough days to finally finding success laughs and admits that his is also that classic dollar 20 in the pocket story! He says, “I came to Chicago back in 1982 to study and though I emigrated here as my sister was settled here I started my journey on my own.” Despite the fact that his sister was more than supportive, Shareef believed in that Indian tradition of not taking anything from the girl of the house. He recalls, “I shared an apartment with four other people, we had no beds and slept on newspapers using yellow pages as our pillows. I was a clueless young man, hardly aware of the American way of life and was looking to start my journey here when the 80’s recession was at its peak. I couldn’t even find a gas station job and would often go and sit at a place to get daily employment. There too all the other guys who were bulky and muscular would get picked up first, as they appeared more capable of handling manual jobs than this frail looking guy from India!” He adds, “During my student years my first job was at a local Mc Donald’s from where I was fired within two weeks for not picking the American accent right.” But when asked on how and when this boy beginning his life in America thought of diversifying into business, he says, “ After completing my bachelors in medical technology I found work in a medical lab. My salary back then was about 25k and once I asked a colleague about how much the top most guys in the office would be making and I was told about 60k. Even back then, the amount did not seem inspiring enough for me to spend my life working there. Then on I began diversifying and worked extremely hard to establish my business. I slowly expanded into franchisee business in food, retail, gas station etc.” Another interesting turn in his professional life came after Shareef got married. He remembers, “I brought my wife one day to show her my businesses hoping to impress her. Back home she made me realize that I was involved in businesses that also dealt with liquor sales and selling of dirty magazines – things that go against the Muslim faith. A realization dawned on me
and I sold off everything in 1992 to begin again.” It was around that time that Shareef founded National Bank Corporation. He admits that when they started they were the only ones in that service. He credits the immense trust the Indian community in Chicago put on him for the success of his trade. He says, “For the initial five years we were only marketing to Indian businesses and they believed in us. I still remember my first customer, who was a Gujarati. Without batting an eyelid he discontinued from his earlier company and signed us in. It is this immense brotherhood in Chicago where every Indian ready to believe in his fellow country man that makes it a special city.” PUBLIC CAUSES While charting his onward trajectory, Shareef was also always acutely aware that as a gesture to give back to every Indian who supported
SHAREEF STARTED FROM A SCRATCH IN CHICAGO AND ADMITS HIS STORY ALSO BEGAN WITH THAT CLASSIC $20 IN POCKET ONLY. him he too had to create a more conducive atmosphere for Indian Americans to grow in America. He got involved into various social causes and public activities including organizing cultural and political events. He recalls, “I got involved in community affairs back in 1977 when India was celebrating its 50th Independence Day. We did a successful event at FIA and continue doing so.” Talking about FIA, one would want to know about the split that happened in organization a few years ago. He explains, “FIA was established back in 1980 and
included several important people who worked towards collating the Indian business and cultural ties in America however back in 2009 when a member Sunil Shah who lost the elections as the secretary felt that the voting was unfair and went ahead and formed another organization called FIA with Onkar Sangha. Their organization is called FIA, Illinois and there are several rules that are broken such as similar names and proximity between the two organizations should be 100 miles while they are and less than 25 miles from us. One of his other dreams is also to see an increased business tie up between India and America. Last year at the American Telugu Association (ATA) conference he hosted Indian politician Venkaiah Naidu and is now busy charting the details for the 2018 mega ATA conference in Philadelphia. We are looking to invite the central ministers, aviation minister and also the would-be new President of India. We are meeting this Sunday to work out the details of Chicago Independence Day Parade and will be announcing the name of the celebs from India attending this years’ parade. Since Shareef has also been involved in hosting a lot of Indian celebrities such as Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan and many more one can’t help but ask his experiences. He recalls, “When Salman Khan came to Chicago in 1995 there were rumors that he may not get a visa however he arrived a day earlier than his show and was the most down-to-earth person ever.” He remembers, “Salman was mobbed at a video store we took him to in Devon but instead of losing his cool he continued meeting everyone with a smile. We didn’t have security for him too and I advised him to go inside a room to avoid the crowds but he refused and stayed with his fans who continued to swell in size.” Apart from that every celebrity who has come expressed a desire to see Chicago. He adds,
“John Abraham asked for a guy who could show him around in Chicago and spent a day exploring the city.” Shareef has been also supportive of Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi who represents the 8th district of Illinois. He says, “We are lucky to have one of our own to represent us in the Congress and both Raja and Ro Khanna in California are doing a great job.” About the concerns in the community he says back in 2000s we lobbied very strongly for granting dual citizenship for Indians and in 2006 I became the first person to receive the OCI status however our efforts are to help OCI holders attain full citizen status in India including voting and property rights. It is only then that more people in the community here will feel encouraged going back and investing in their home country. Given his public status and attachment to root causes on being asked if he has political ambitions, he says, “I would say never say never. I am here to work along with the people and would look ahead in whatever form I can be more effective for the community.”
INDIANS IN CHICAGO ARE MOSTLY SELF-MADE AND HENCE ALWAYS READY TO SUPPORT EACH OTHER IN THEIR JOURNEY.

During the film’s trailer launch, Ekta Kapoor, who will be presenting and distributing the film, said that she had no problem with the CBFC, but with the society. ‘’There is no problem with CBFC, my problem is with society, which at some point speaks about the same issue in its own ways. If you talk to any girl, you will come
to know about five to 10 such incidents happening with her in one day where, being a woman, she has to prove herself a little harder. She has to learn how to combat from a very young age,’’ Ekta Said. Explaining about the middle finger shown in the poster of the film Lipstick Under My Burkha, Ekta said: “The middle finger is not for the CBFC but pointed towards the patriarchal society that does not let us come out, which compels us to suppress our voice. That is why this issue is not just CBFC’s, this issue is about ideology, it is about patriarchy.” During the press conference, the

‘Tubelight’: Shines but with low voltage
S
alman Khan had once said, “Cinema should always be in touch with the soil of the country. My films celebrate the heartland of India.” And probably with Tubelight, he tries to be true to his words. So, he has dedicated the film to the families and friends of soldiers who are left behind to fight their own battles. The film is an adaptation of the 2015 released American film Little Boy. Set in Jagatpur in Kumaon district and in the backdrop of the 1962 India and China War, the film is the tale of a dim-witted boy Laxman whose brother, the only surviving member of his family, joins the Indian Army. aesthetically capture the stunning locales to perfection. The music and background score further enhance the viewing experience. But it is the wafer-thin premise, packed with motivational messages and a tinge of patriotic notes that make the plot seem forced. The script meanders with scenes that lack gravitas. A case in point is the scene when Narayan, one of the village
bullies, throws Laxman who is walking along with his new friend Guo into a stream. And, when Laxman picks up a rock in defense and asks Guo to run, the assailants just whimper off, and the scene ends abruptly. In Tubelight, Salman Khan does not play the dynamic hero that he used to portray with gusto. As Laxman, he fails to exude energy onscreen and hence, disappoints his fans. His mannerisms and body language are strongly reminiscent of Hrithik Roshan’s in “Koi... Mil Gaya”. His character is endearing but his physical demeanor is not. Initially jarring, but by the last act you are one with the character and the actor. Salman definitely grows on you. — Troy Ribeiro

Men gain weight after marriage Eating walnuts may help 2017 GANESH MAHOTSAV On Devon Ave control appetite: Study IANS, SAN FRANCISCO
NEW YORK: Individuals who regularly consume walnuts, salmon and canola oil — rich in polyunsaturated fats (PUFAs) — are likely to experience hormonal changes that can control appetite and make them feel less hungry, a study has shown. The study found that consuming a diet high in PUFAs caused a significant decrease in fasting ghrelin — a hormone that increases hunger. Further, a PUFA rich diet also caused significant increase in peptide YY (PYY) — a hormone that increases fullness or satiety. “Appetite hormones play an important role in regulating how much we eat,” said lead researcher Jamie A. Cooper, from the University of Georgia. “These findings tell us that eating foods rich in PUFAs, like those
found in walnuts, may favorably change appetite hormones so that we can feel fuller for longer,” Cooper added. For the study, detailed in the journal Nutrition, the team enrolled 26 healthy men and women (ages 18-35) who were placed on a sevenday diet high in PUFAs or a control diet consisting of a typical American eating pattern. The PUFA-rich diet included whole foods such as walnuts, Alaska salmon, tuna, flaxseed oil, grape-seed oil, canola oil, and fish oil supplements. The control diet was comprised of 7 per cent polyunsaturated fat, 15 per cent monounsaturated fat and 13 per cent saturated fat, compared to the PUFA-rich diet which was 21 per cent polyunsaturated fat, 9 per cent monounsaturated fat, and 5 per cent saturated fat.

P
utting paid to the idea that married couples have better physical health because of increased social support, a new study has found that marriage actually makes men fatter. The findings, published in the journal Social Science & Medicine, confirms the theory that people who are single but seeking marriage have more incentive to stay fit and make more effort than those who are mar-
ried. “It’s useful for individuals to understand which social factors may influence weight gain, especially common ones such as marriage and parenthood, so that they can make
informed decisions about their health and well-being,” said Joanna Syrda from the University of Bath in England. The study suggests that married men who want to avoid increases in Body Mass Index (BMI) should be mindful of their own changing motivation, behavior and eating habits. “Given major public health concerns about obesity, understanding more about the social science factors that can cause weight fluctuation is important,” Syrda added.

Cook County beverage tax angers retailers BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL - The Asian American Store Owners’ Association (AASOA) and the Illinois Beverage Association organized a protest against Cook County’s move to impose sweetened beverage tax in Chicago and its surroundings from July 1. More than 600 people, including Seven Eleven and other retailers, joined the demonstration at James R Thompson building on Randolph St. Chicago, on June 27. The law was passed last November by the Cook County Board of Commissioners with eight out of 16 commissioners voting for it citing health reasons and, with the president backing the move, it was okayed with majority. It applies to all bottled sweetened beverages, including soda, sports drinks and energy drinks. Stores owners say the penny-per-ounce beverage tax will ruin the businesses of 20,000 retailers. Nirav Patel, president of AASOA, Midwest said the ‘unethical’ tax would not only hit businesses below the belt but would also mean
C
an extra monthly burden of $30, thus impacting the lower-middle class citizens. Ken Patel from 7-11 says the merchants’ profit margins are already very low and now the extra tax will kill their businesses, and this may lead to exodus of hundreds of small businessmen. Joy Shah from AASOA says the Board had taken the decision without seeking public opinion and hence has demanded repeal of the ‘unconstitutional’ tax. “We will express our anger in elections by not voting for those commissioners who supported the tax hike”, he said. Bharat Thakkar from AARA said the Cook County president did not even bother to come and accept the retailers’ petitions and instead sent his subordinate to collect the petition boxes. Apart from Ken Patel (Ketan) of 7-Eleven, FOAC president, others who actively participated in the protest program included
FOAC board members Kaushik Patel, Bhupender Bawa and Jaymin Pandya as well as Mihir Parikh, Biren Patel and Jaynish Patel of 7-Eleven. Meanwhile, a group of retailers has sued Cook County, Illinois, to try to block the sweetened beverage tax, arguing it is unconstitutional and too vague for stores to implement. As part of the Cook County Circuit Court lawsuit, the Illinois Retail Merchants Association is seeking an injunction preventing enforcement of the law and a declaration that it is invalid. “This ordinance is incomplete and it’s a perfect example of the disaster that awaits when policies are hurried through without serious thought to how they might impact the businesses that have to try to comply with these policies,” Jaynish Patel said. A spokesperson for Cook County board president, Toni Preckwinkle, says she will fight it “vigorously.”
Kaushik Patel said that a packaged sweetened ice tea would be subject to the tax, while a similar drink served from behind the counter would not, the complaint said. Bhupender Bawa said the tax also makes retailers vulnerable to becoming ineligible for the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, because the program prohibits purchasing food that has a state or local sales tax. Other parties suing the county include Berkot Super Foods, Fairplay Foods, Chiquita Food Market, Leamington Foods, Tony’s Fresh Market, Valli Produce and Walt’s Food Centers. “It doesn’t give guidance of how people in practice are supposed to enforce this tax ordinance,” said Biren Patel. “There’s a lot of confusion. And we’re seeing that by the county reacting in the last month, making significant — if not 180-degree changes — to how realtors are supposed to enforce the tax.” The suit argues, among other things, that
there would be a double standard when it comes to imposing taxes on soda and some other sweetened beverages. That tax covers carbonated soft drinks, whether sweetened with sugar or a substitute such as aspartame. It also covers sports drinks and energy drinks. Fruit drinks will be taxed, t oo — but 100 percent fruit juice drinks are exempt. Because some sweetened drinks are taxable and others aren’t, imposition of the tax fails to live up to the stated goal, according to the suit, which is to “promote public health and reduce obesity rates.” Collecting these “unconstitutional” taxes could also open retailers up to lawsuits, Jaymin Pandya said. “We’re putting our retailers in a horrible situation where it’s a no-win situation,” Mihir Parikh said. “What we really want to do is take a step back, try to analyze this tax, come up with solutions — and a July 1 date just isn’t going to work for us.”
FBI warns of email scam after couple is duped
BY A STAFF WRITER OLLING MEADOWS, IL -The FBI is warning the public to be aware of a scam in which money is sought in the name of the law enforcement agency. An elderly couple in Chicago’s north suburbs was recently scammed out of “thousands of dollars” after receiving an email that appeared to be from the FBI office in Rolling Meadows, the FBI said in a news release last week. The email, which included a copy of the FBI logo, informed the couple that the agency “detected” that they “are involved in money laundering and financing terrorism in different parts of the world which is a
R
crime.” The email informed the couple they would be charged criminally unless they replied to the email within 24 hours and stopped “further contacts with any bank(s) or person(s) in any part of the world” regarding the email. The FBI reminds the public that it does not send emails informing people they are charged with a crime and does not ask for money. Anyone who receives a suspicious email should access Internet Crime Complaint Center website at ic3.gov, where cyberrelated crimes can be reported. The FBI would not reveal the suburb where the victimized couple resides.

Patricia Posey Sen managed Dr. Sen’s medical practice from 2009 through 2012, a press release from the US Attorney for the Eastern District of Tennessee said. Prosecutors alleged that the unapproved drugs that the Sens allegedly provided to patients and billed to Medicare and TennCare were not reimbursable under those programs. The US further alleged that the Sens purchased unapproved drugs because they were less expensive than the drugs approved by FDA for marketing in the United States, thus allegedly profiting by administering the cheaper unapproved drugs.

Man charged with torching mosque BY A STAFF WRITER ICTORIA, TX -- A federal grand jury in Victoria, Texas has returned a three-count superseding indictment against Marq Vincent Perez, 25, for allegedly burning the Victoria Islamic Center earlier this year. Perez was previously indicted for possession of an unregistered destructive device for an incident that occurred on January 15. The superseding indictment returned on June 22 now charges him with a hate crime–damage to a religious property and arson at the mosque. Initially, Perez was arrested and charged on March 3 in connection with an attempt to blow up a car with a destructive device. At a detention hearing held the following week, the court heard evidence linking Perez to a January 22 burglary of the Victoria Islamic Center as also a January 28 burglary and arson of the same mosque. He is in custody pending further criminal proceedings, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney Office for the Southern District of Texas.
V
Indian lawyer dies after being hit by train
The story relating to this mosque’s burning appears to have inspired people in Texas and elsewhere. Support for rebuilding it grew as the mosque called for contributions. In a statement posted on Facebook on June 22, the Victoria Islamic Center said, “Federal indictment of hate crime against Marq Perez was announced in a press conference today. We wish him fair trial and pray for peace & tranquility
for his family in this difficult time.” If convicted, Perez faces up to 20 years in federal prison for the hate crime. He also faces up to 10 years for possessing an unregistered destructive device. If convicted of use of a fire to commit a felony, the penalty is a consecutive and mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison. All of the counts also carry a potential $250,00 penalty.
Elderly man killed in two-car crash BY A STAFF WRITER ELMA, CA -- Faqir Singh, a resident of Selma, Calif., was killed in a twocar crash in Fresno County, Calif. The Indian American elderly man reportedly hopped out of his car after the crash to help the driver of the other car, but eventually succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. Hector Jose Torres, 26, of Riverdale, reported to Fresno County Superior Court on June 9 where his DUI charge was upgraded to a murder charge following the fatal crash on Highway 43. The crash occurred around 11:30 pm on
S
June 6 when Torres pulled onto the roadway from the east shoulder without yielding to oncoming traffic, according to the California
Highway Patrol. Torres pulled immediately into the path of the 79-year-old Singh. The front end of Singh’s 2008 Honda hit the side of Torres’s Chevrolet. Singh came to the US in the late 1980s from a village in Punjab. Singh was on his way home from his job at the Del Monte Foods Co. plant in Hanford when the crash occurred, deploying the Honda’s airbag. Court records show that Torres had been in a multiple offender DUI program in 2011. He was booked into Fresno County Jail June 9 with his bail set at $1,021,000, according to Fresno County Jail records.
Kirtee Kapoor
BY A STAFF WRITER ENLO PARK, CA -- An Indianorigin lawyer died after he was hit by a train at a crossing in a northern California town. A statement on the Davis Polk website said Kapoor was born in Bengaluru and did his LLB from the University of Delhi Faculty of Law, a BCL from Balliol College, University of Oxford, and LLM from New York University School of Law. He was elected to the partnership in 2007 and moved to Hong Kong later that year. In 2015, he joined the firm’s northern California office. Kapoor leaves behind his wife and a daughter who live in Menlo Park.
