White House defends new Air Force One deal with Boeing President-elect Donald Trump called for cancelling the deal with Boeing claiming the new aircraft too expensive in a Twitter post recently IANS, WASHINGTON

T

he White House defended the deal of new Air Force One aircrafts with Boeing company, after President-elect Donald Trump called for cancelling the order claiming the new aircraft too expensive in a Twitter post earlier on Tuesday. “I think the American people would expect that future presidents would benefit from unique and upgraded capabilities while flying aboard Air Force One,” White House press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters on board the presidential plane flying to Tampa, Florida. However, it’s up to the Trump administration to determine

whether the project will be completed, said Earnest. “The updated Air Force One is not set to come online until 2023,” he said. “This is a longer-range plan,

but ultimately the planning work that we have done on behalf of future presidents is something the next administration will have to decide to carry forward.”

‘Trump’s skill to help resolve Kashmir issue’ WASHINGTON: US Vice Presidentelect Mike Pence has stated that Donald Trump could use his “extraordinary deal-making skills” to reduce tensions around the world and resolve problems, including the Kashmir issue. Dunya News cited Pence as saying in an interview with the NBC News that the new US administration intends to be “fully engaged” in South

Asia and with India and Pakistan on issues such as Kashmir to promote peace and security in the region. “I think in president-elect Donald Trump you’ve got someone, who is prepared to advance America’s interests here at home, to rebuild this economy, to fight for American jobs,” he said. “But I think you’re also going to see

Joe Biden hints at US presidential run in 2020 WASHINGTON: US Vice-President Joe Biden has said that he may run for the post of President in 2020, the media reported. “Yeah, I am. I am going to run in 2020,” Biden told reporters on Monday when asked if he would run for office again. When asked what role he would seek, the 74-year-old vice-president responded: “For President. And also, you know so, what the hell man, anyway.” However, he also said that he was not committed to run, reported CNBC. “I’m not committed to anything. I learned a long time ago, fate has a strange way of intervening,” he said. Biden previously pursued the Democratic presidential nomination in 1988 and in 2008, but dropped out of the race early on both occasions.

In 2015, Biden also ruled out running for the 2016 presidential nomination, in a race that would have pitted him against Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. —IANS

an energetic leadership in the world, prepared to engage and to look for ways that he can bring those extraordinary deal-making skills to bear on lessening tensions and solving problems in the world,” he added. Pence further said there had “been great tension between India and Pakistan in recent days. It’s resulted in violence along the Kashmir region”.

“Boeing is building a brand new 747 Air Force One for future presidents, but costs are out of control, more than $4 billion. Cancel order!” Trump tweeted. “We want Boeing to make a lot of money, but not that much money,” he then told reporters in a briefing. However, the $4-billion price tag Trump claimed for the cost of the new aircraft could not be immediately confirmed. Earnest said some of the data Trump referenced to “don’t appear to reflect the nature of the financial agreement between Boeing and the Department of Defense.” The upgrades to the new plane, which include security enhancements, are being made per the recommendation of national security experts, he added. Also on Tuesday, Boeing said in a statement that the company is “currently under contract for $170 million to help determine the capabilities of these complex military aircraft that serve the unique requirements of the President of the United States.” The two 747-200 aircrafts currently used as Air Force One has been in flight since the Reagon era in 1980s. Though the two planes have been heavily modified, they are due to reach the end of their planned 30-year life in 2017.

BRIEFS Trump is Time’s Person of the Year WASHINGTON: US President-elect Donald Trump has been named as Time magazine’s Person of the Year for 2016, BBC reported on Wednesday. The property tycoon took the title after winning an unexpected victory over Democratic rival Hillary Clinton in November’s presidential election. Trump told NBC’s Today show shortly after the announcement that it was a “great honor” which “meant a lot” to him. He was chosen from a shortlist that also included Hillary Clinton and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Taiwan president’s call was just ‘courtesy’ WASHINGTON: US Vice President-elect Mike Pence said that the controversial telephone call between Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and President-elect Donald Trump last week was just a “courtesy call”, media reports said. Trump’s chat with Tsai, the first bilateral contact at the presidential level since Washington broke relations with Taipei in 1979, was nothing more than a “courtesy”, Efe news agency quoted Pence as saying on an the ABC news program. “I think I would just say to our counterparts in China that this was a moment of courtesy. The President-elect talked to President Xi (Jinping) two weeks ago in the same manner that was not a discussion about policy,” Pence said. —IANS

US marks 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor IANS, WASHINGTON

T

he US on Wednesday marked the 75th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii that claimed more than 2,400 American lives. As many as 2,403 Americans were killed and about 20 US vessels were sunk or damaged and over 300 US aircrafts were damaged or destroyed when over 350 Japanese warplanes launched attacks stealthily, Xinhua reported. The attack came as a shock to the Americans and directly led to US entry into World War II. On August 6, 1945, the US dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. Another US nuclear strike was launched on the Japanese city of Nagasaki three days later. Japan surrendered on August 15, 1945. As the Americans were mourning the colossal loss inflicted by the Japanese, the news came that Japanese Prime

The attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii claimed more than 2,400 American lives.

Minister Shinzo Abe would visit the Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor at the end of December. However, observers said that Abe was not expected to apologize for the attack on Pearl Harbor. Abe’s decision to visit Pearl Harbor came about six months after Obama visited Japan’s Hiroshima

Jayalalithaa’s legacy

Industrial, social, crime rankings among India’s best Jayalalithaa was known for gifting a record set of freebies, but she also leaves behind a state that ranks among India’s top five in many social, crime and industrial indicators PRACHI SALVE, NEW DELHI

T

amil Nadu’s 19th Chief Minister (she was also the 11th, 14th, 16th and 18th) J. Jayalalithaa, who died on December 5, 2016, was known for gifting her 72 million people a record set of freebies, but she also leaves behind a state that ranks among India’s top five in many social, crime and industrial indicators. Tamil Nadu now has India’s lowest fertility rate — lower than Australia, Finland and Belgium — second best infant mortality and maternal mortality rate; records among the lowest crime rates against women and children; and has more factories and provides more industrial employment than any other Indian state, according to an IndiaSpend analysis of various data sets. However, financing the freebie culture came at a cost. Tamil Nadu witnessed a 92 per cent increase in debt over five years ending 2015, according to an IndiaSpend analysis of state budgets in November 2015. Tamil Nadu’s education indicators have always been above the Indian average and have steadily improved during Jayalalithaa’s

Many of Tamil Nadu’s social indicators steadily improved during Jayalalithaa’s 15-year stint as chief minister.

15-year stint as chief minister. Although Tamil Nadu regularly reports violence and discrimination based on caste, the state’s crime rates are among India’s lowest, particularly those relating to women and children. As regards industrial growth, Tamil Nadu has more factories than any other Indian state (37,378), according to the

Annual Survey of Industries, 201314. Maharashtra ranks second with 29,123 factories, followed by Gujarat with 22,876. More people are engaged in industrial work (2.04 million) in Tamil Nadu of any Indian state; Maharashtra (1.8 million) is second and Gujarat (1.37 million) third. Tamil Nadu’s per capita income

is India’s fifth highest, but the four states preceding it are substantially smaller. Among the country’s large states, it has the richest people. Freebies come at a cost Jayalalithaa is known for the freebie culture, which she did not begin but did expand, personalizing it along the way. For instance, her 2011 election promises included

100 units of free electricity to every household, a free laptop for class 11 and class 12 students (with free internet connections), a gram of sovereign gold as marriage assistance, and four goats/sheep to families who lived below the poverty line. The laptops had images of “Amma (mother)”, as Jayalalithaa was popularly known. Other programmes also carried that name, such as Amma canteens (for subsidized food) and Amma medicals (for subsidized medicines). While some programmes were applauded as having a social effectsuch as the midday meal scheme, which Tamil Nadu pioneered before Jayalalithaa took office for the first time in 1991 and encouraged children to stay in schoolthey resulted in the fastest rising debt of any Indian state, as IndiaSpend reported in November 2015. Debt, per se, is not bad, if the state’s economic growth can sustain and service it. So, the key matrix is the debt as a percentage of the state’s gross domestic product (GSDP) or total economic output. Tamil Nadu’s debt-to-GSDP ratio at 20 per cent is lower than the national average, an indication the state is growing despite the spike in debt.

3 Hurdles to Modi’s push for cashless economy During his radio programme Mann Ki Baat, Modi told listeners to learn how this digital economy works DEVANIK SAHA, NEW DELHI

O

n November 27, during an election rally in Uttar Pradesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged all Indians get familiar and make others familiar with cashless transactions. The same day, during his radio programme Mann Ki Baat, he said: “Learn how this digital economy works. Learn the different ways you can use your bank accounts and internet banking.Given this, there are five hurdles to Modi’s ambition of converting India to a cashless economy:

1. 342 million internet users, 27 per cent of Indians: Earlier this year, India surpassed the US to become the country with the second-largest number of Internet users, according to this June 2016 report by investment firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. There are 342 million internet subscribers (an Internet “penetration rate” of 27 per cent) in India, data from Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) reveal. 2.

2. Smartphone usage rate among adults 17 per cent: For a majority of banking applications, a smartphone is a prerequisite. India is Asia-Pacific’s fastest-growing smartphone market,

but no more than 17 per cent of Indian adults own a smartphone, according to a survey by Pew Research. Only seven per cent of adults in low-income families own a smartphone; the figure for wealthier families is 22 per cent. 3. 1.02 billion mobile subscriptions, but only 15 per cent have broadband internet: India had 1.02 billion wireless subscriptions, but after scrubbing the data of inactive and duplicate connections, India has 930 million (90 per cent) active subscribers, according to a TRAI report. The Civil Aviation Authority confirmed there were no survivors, said Dawn newspaper, adding 36 bodies had been recovered from the site. The passengers on the small plane operated by the state-run Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) included noted “Vital Signs” singerturned-evangelist Junaid Jamshed and his family, Chitral Deputy Commissioner Osama Warraich, and three foreigners including a Chinese man, Dawn said. plane crashed in Havelian area. PIA identified the site as Saddha Batolni village near the Pakistan Ordinance Factory, Havelian. Soldiers and army helicopters were mobilized to rush to the crash

site, said Inter-Services Public Relations, the army’s media wing. Rescue operations were however hindered due to the rugged terrain as well as cold and dark conditions with sundown in Havelian taking place at 4.57 p.m. Ambulances were unable to reach at the site of the accident. Government official Taj Muhammad Khan, who was at the site, said all the bodies had been “burned beyond recognition”. He added that witnesses told him “the aircraft has crashed in a mountainous area...before it hit the ground, it was on fire”, reported Dawn. The ATR-42 aircraft departed from Chitral at 3.30 p.m. and was to land at Islamabad’s Benazir Bhutto International Airport around 4.40 p.m. But it went missing from the radar around 4.30 p.m. PIA spokesperson Daniyal Gilani said the plane had 42 passengers, including nine women and two infants, and five crew members.

Italian political crisis looms New Zealand PM announces resignation after Renzi’s referendum rout IANS, WELLINGTON

ew Zealand Prime Minister John Key on Monday announced his resignation after eight years as head of the government. Key cited family reasons for stepping down. “This is the hardest decision I’ve ever made and I don’t know what I’ll do next,” Efe quoted Key as saying. He also resigned as the National Party leader. The country’s presumptive next leader paid tribute to Key “as one of

ROME: Italy on Monday faced political uncertainty after center-Left Premier Matteo Renzi said he was stepping down following a referendum defeat on his plans to streamline Italy’s political machinery. Renzi said he would tender his resignation to Italian President Sergio Mattarella after 60 percent of Italian voters on Sunday rejected his proposed constitutional reforms to strengthen the central government and rein in parliament’s upper house Senate and the regions. “It wanted to eliminate the excessive seats of power....I failed and so I it’s up to me to stand down, said Renzi. “I lost, I say it out loud, albeit with a lump in my throat,” said Renzi, who took office in February 2014.

With most ballots counted from the referendum, the No vote leads with 60 percent compared with 40 percent for Yes, with a 70 percent turnout. Mattarella will now appoint a caretaker Prime Minister - possibly Finance Minister Pier Carlo Padoan or call snap elections as the populist opposition Five Star movement and the anti-immigrant Northern League party are demanding. The head of state may ask Renzi to stay on until the Parliament has passed the 2017 budget bill due later this month. Fresh elections are slated in 2018. Markets showed no signs of panic on Monday as the possibility of the reformist Renzi’s departure had already been factored in.

successful and self-assured country because of his contribution. He has truly made a difference,” Xinhua news agency quoted Deputy Prime Minister Bill English as saying. According to the media, Key’s wife Bronagh asked him to step down due to the “extraordinary levels of intrusion” in the lives of their two children, daughter Stephie and son Max. Key’s announcement shocked fellow MPs of his center-right National Party as much as it did to the rest of the country.

Indian American prosecutor appointed by Obama to stay on Preet Bharara has taken action against major banks forcing them to pay billions of dollars to the government to settle the cases ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK

U

S President-elect Donald Trump is going to keep Indian American Preet Bharara in his job as a high-profile federal prosecutor with charge of Wall Street and important security matters in New York. Bharara, who was appointed by President Barack Obama, told reporters after meeting with the president-elect that Trump asked him to continue as the US District Attorney for Southern New York and “I agreed to stay on.” Bharara has the reputation of being a crusader against financial institutions that have been blamed for the recent great recession and have been attacked by Trump for causing economic hardship around the nation. He has taken action against major banks like Citibank and JP Morgan Chase, forcing them to pay billions of dollars to the government to settle the cases. He has prosecuted over 100 of Wall Street executives for criminal activities like stock trading irregularities using insider information. They include several Indians like Rajat Gupta, the former head of the consulting company McKinsey and Goldman Sachs director, who served two years in jail for colluding with the Sri Lankan American hedge fund operator Raj Rajaratnam in a stock market scam.

Indian-origin astronomer spots tiniest asteroid NEW YORK: Using data from four different telescopes, a team of astronomers led by an Indian-origin researcher has reported that an asteroid discovered last year is the tiniest known asteroid. At two meters (six feet) in diameter, the asteroid, named 2015 TC25, is also one of the brightest nearEarth asteroids ever discovered, the researchers said. “If we can discover and characterise asteroids and meteoroids this small, then we can understand the population of objects from which they originate: large asteroids, which have a much smaller likelihood of impacting Earth,” said Vishnu Reddy, Assistant Professor at University of Arizona’s Lunar and Planetary Laboratory in the US . —IANS

At the age of eight, Basu organised an awareness-raising campaign for the recycling of waste in her Dubai neighborhood. Breather for Indian workers in Kuwait

The President-elect has asked Preet Bharara to continue as the US District Attorney for Southern New York . (File Photo: IANS)

The meeting with Trump and the offer to have Bharara is unusual both because he is a Democrat and an Obama appointee - the only one so far that the Republican has said he will keep on - and because despite its visibility, the job is not of the high-level that Trump is currently trying to fill. Therefore, it shows the importance Trump attaches to the areas of potential prosecution that Bharara oversees. Like Bharara, Trump is highly critical of Wall Street manipulations and irregularities, saying: “Wall Street has

caused tremendous problems for us.” “I’m not going to let Wall Street get away with murder,” Trump has declared, and Bharara would be his minion to ensure that. Bharara has prosecuted several New York politicians for corruption. The senior-most among them is state assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, a Democrat, who was given a 12-year sentence for corruption. Bharara, whose full name is Preetinder Preet Singh Bharara, was born in Ferozepore in 1968 and immigrated to the US as a child.

He sparked a diplomatic standoff between India and the United States in 2013 when he had a Dalit Indian diplomat, Devyani Khobragade, arrested and strip-searched over allegations that she had made a false statement in the visa application for her maid. Other diplomats accused of similar offenses were not similarly treated by Bharara and the humiliating action against Khobragade, the Deputy Consul General in New York, brought retaliatory action by India against US diplomats in India.

KUWAIT CITY: In a rare gesture, the Kuwait government has stated it would not imprison or penalise over 24,000 illegal Indian workers if they report to the Interior Ministry for deportation or transfer of job visas. “We are lenient towards Indian workers but have asked them to strictly follow the rules and regulations. The Immigration Department is ready to help them in the deportation process,” Maj General Talal Ibrahim Marafie, who heads the department, told a group of Indian journalists, adding this was being done “in view of good and strong ties with India”. There are around one million Indian workers in Kuwait, who contribute immensely to the development of the country. —IANS

Recalling the various adversitites she had faced, he said: “Her path was strewn with thorns and rocks but she overcame all with her unmatched grit and determination.” USFAIADMK President Koshy O. eecalled Jayalalithaa’s welfare programmes, especially for women and students, and said

she was a charismatic leader. Earlier ATS and USFAIADMK had held prayers for Jayalalithaa’s recovery at the Saneeswarar Temple in the city that was attended by Hindus and Christians. In 2011, Hillary Clinton, who was then the Secretary of State, met Jayalalithaa at her office in Fort St. George in Chennai. A press release issued at that time said that they had discussed the problems of Sri Lankan Tamil refugees and social welfare programmes. An ATS press release said that at initiative of the then-Deputy Speaker Upendra Chivkula, the New Jersey State Assembly had issued a proclamation honoring Jayalalithaa after her election in 2011.

Soon, red cards in cricket The new laws will be implemented at all levels of the game from October 1, 2017, if they are approved by the Marylebone Cricket Club ‘s main committee IANS, MUMBAI

C

ricket is contemplating player evictions for the first time next year, while also limiting the size of ever-bulging bats. The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) World Cricket committee recommended that umpires be given the power to eject cricketers from a game for serious disciplinary breaches. The MCC World Cricket committee met here on Tuesday and Wednesday. MCC is the guardian of the laws of the game. The new laws will be implemented at all levels of the game from October 1, 2017, if they are approved by the MCC’s main committee. The new laws will include a stipulation that umpires can remove a player from the field for threatening an umpire, physically assaulting another player, umpire, official or spectator and any other act of violence. “The World Cricket committee believes that the game must now include a mechanism to deal with

Ronaldo not under scanner in Spain for tax offenses MADRID: Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo wasn’t among the footballers under scanner from the Madrid prosecution for tax offenses, according to the Madrid prosecution on Wednesday. The Madrid prosecution accused three footballers of tax offenses and initiated proceedings against two other players, stemming from data made available by Spain’s tax authority, reports Efe. Prosecution officials mentioned that Ronaldo is not among the five players under scrutiny but denied providing information regarding the identities of the five suspects. Ex-Madrid players Xabi Alonso, Angel Di Maria and Ricardo Carvalho are reportedly being charged. Former Atletico Madrid Radamel Falcao and Real madrid full-back Fabio Coentrao are being reportedly investigated. The Madrid prosecution added that they endorsed the precautionary measure from the judge to preclude personal, financial and tax information that was acquired illegally, which might affect the investigations. A group of European media organizations have reported that Ronaldo have siphoned off at least $150 mil-

from 1st October 2017,” an MCC release said here on Wednesday. “The committee debated sanctions for lesser offenses — including run penalties and sin bins — but did not believe anything

should be introduced to the laws, where it would be harder to achieve consistency of application around the world. However, MCC will look to devise such a system as an appendix to the laws which gov-

erning bodies or leagues may wish to implement within their own playing regulations.” The MCC committee also recommended specific bat size limitations be made to both the edges and depth of a bat as it believes the balance of the game has tilted too far in the batsman’s favor. The committee felt the time has come to limit the sizes of bat edges and depths. “The main committee of MCC will now be asked to approve a limit to bat edges of 40 millimeter and bat depths of 67mm (60mm for the depth plus an allowance of 7mm for a possible curve on the face of the bat). “If approved, these changes will be implemented into the new code of the Laws of Cricket, which will be introduced on 1 October 2017,” MCC said. The committee wants to draw a line as to how long and wide a bat will be to target mis-hits that are clearing the boundary ropes for six. A bat gauge will ensure that the new limits are adhered to in the professional game.

aving already pocketed the five-match cricket Test rubber, with an unassailable 2-0 lead, a confident India will be aiming to keep the winning momentum going when they face an inconsistent England in the fourth match at the Wankhede Stadium here from Thursday. This will be the first instance since 1989 when India will play a Test at the Wankhede sans retired batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar. The fourth Test will also give India a chance to exact revenge for their loss in their previous two Test meetings at the ground before heading to Chennai for the final encounter. Going into Thursday’s encounter, the Virat Kohli-led side will aim to extend their dominant run despite some injury concerns in the squad. The top-order batting has clicked well for the hosts with Cheteshwar Pujara and Kohli himself exhibiting great form in the middle while all-rounders Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja have handled any hiccups brilliantly lower down the order.

England’s debutant Keaton Jennings (C) is greeted by teammates during a practice session ahead of the fourth Test match between India and England.

Senior wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel, who was drafted into the national side after an eight-year long wait, has displayed good maturity behind the stumps as well as an opening bat with scores of 42 and unbeaten 67 in the third Test at Mohali. But with the return to fitness after a forearm injury of opener Lokesh Rahul, Patel may be asked to bat down the order. Youngster Karun Nair, who made his Test debut at Mohali, looks likely to make way for Rahul. Kohli will however, be concerned with the form of opener Murali Vijay who has failed to click in this series so far.

Kohli’s deputy Ajinkya Rahane, however, has been ruled out of the remainder of the Test rubber after the Mumbai batsman sustained an avulsion fracture on his right index finger during training on Wednesday. Manish Pandey has been named as Rahane’s replacement. The bowling department have so far fared decently with pacers Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami managing to be amongst the wickets with the new ball. However, Shami’s concerns with a sore knee makes him a doubtful starter. In his absence, Bhuvneshwar Kumar will be Umesh’s likely new ball partner.

amil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa was laid to rest at the Marina Beach here as President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined the nation to pay their last respects to the iconic actor-turned-politician. As the sun began to set, Jayalalithaa’s confidante Sasikala performed the final rituals overseen by a Brahmin priest before her tricolor-draped body in a sandalwood casket was lowered into a grave near the MGR memorial. As an era ended in Tamil Nadu, Jayalalithaa’s last journey started from Rajaji Hall, where lakhs thronged for a final look at their iconic leader, and slowly moved towards the Marina Beach flooded with mourners. The three-km procession through Chennai streets, packed on both sides by men and women, many weeping, consumed more than an hour. The AIADMK chief was laid to rest with full state honors next to her mentor and party founder M.G. for some more years.” As the funeral procession reached its destination, sobs filled the air. Many were in tears. There were dramatic displays of emotion, with people wailing inconsolably and beating their chests and heads. There were loud cries of “Amma, Amma”. Thousands of security personnel were deployed as top politicians from across the country attended the last rites of Jayalalithaa, 68, who died shortly after midnight

following a 74-day battle with illness. Mukherjee and Modi led the nation in paying respects to Jayalalithaa. Both walked separately towards the casket with folded hands, bowed and laid a floral wreath. he was a shy girl when she first stepped into the movie world. Decades later, by when she was one of the most popular actors in Tamil, Jayalalithaa became a colossus in Tamil Nadu’s politics, one who dreamt of playing a larger national role too. Jayalalithaa, who died after a 74day battle for life, was a politician par excellence, a Brahmin woman who reached the pinnacle in a state where anti-Brahminism is very strong and led her AIADMK party to four victories in assembly elections - the last two in succession. Affectionately called “Amma” by fans and party activists, Jayalalithaa wielded power with an iron hand, many men in the party falling at her feet at public events. But she enjoyed genuine popularity, partic-

ularly among the economically weaker sections who regarded her as a virtual goddess. Jayalalithaa certainly knew what it takes to negotiate the rollercoaster ride of power.

Her acting career peaked after she was paired with the legendary M.G. Ramachandran or MGR Born in Karnataka on February 2, 1948 into an Iyengar family and named Komavalli, Jayalalithaa moved to Chennai in the 1950s to live with her mother who worked as a stage and Tamil film actress. A bright student, Jayalalithaa studied at the Bishop Cotton Girl’s High School in Bengaluru and the

Church Park Presentation Convent in Chennai after her relocation. At 16, she acted in a Kannada movie which turned out to be a blockbuster. She also acted on stage for years even as she continued to study. Although she wanted to pursue higher studies, Jayalalithaa gradually veered towards acting. Her first Tamil movie was Vennira Aadai (1965). Over the decades, she acted in 140 films in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and even one in Hindi Izzat opposite Dharmendra. Her acting career peaked after she was paired with the legendary M.G. Ramachandran or MGR. The success of their film Aayirathil Oruvan (1965) turned Jayalalithaa into a leading heroine in Tamil movies. The two were an instant hit on the silver screen and they were said to be friends too in real life.

The raids are still continuing on too even as the report was being filed On Friday night, The IT officials during the 48 hour raids ( still going on) in various locations of Chennai including post T. Nagar and Anna Nagar apart from the currency and gold bars seized property documents totally amounting to Rs 1250 crores. An IT official of Delhi told this correspondent that this were only preliminary investigations and total

embezzlement would be assessed after the raids which may last till Sunday as more incriminating information is still pouring from Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. The IT official admitted this is the “ biggest catch “ of the country though the Department is seizing new Rs 2000 currency notes worth more than 4000 crores all over country including Surat, Jallundur, Goa,Jabalpur, New Delhi,Mumbai etc. What is baffling is that when the common man standing serpentine queues for hours going through trying times to withdraw his own money from the Banks, , the case of the Income Tax officials finding Rs 150 crores( 70 crores new Rs 2000 notes and Rs 500 old notes ) and 120 kg Gold from a single person in Chennai has raised the hackles amongst

the citizens in the country. Mr Sekhar Reddy, who is a close aide of the present Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Mr Panner Selvam and AIDMK leader Sashikala in the guise of Lord Venkateshwar Bhakta has several political connections in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh for several decades. An IT official examining new currency of Rs 2000 notes stashed in card board boxes stored in a room of house of Mr Sekhar Reddy in T. Nagar in Chennai on Friday IT sleuths who are continuing the raids on the houses of Sekhar Reddy and his relatives in various places in Tamil Nadu were shocked to find hordes of new and old currency notes and gold biscuits neatly arranged in rooms of his house. The IT officials recovered four currency counting machines from the houses of Reddy and his relatives Srinivas Reddy, Prem in T. Nagar and Anna Nagar. The discovery of such huge haul of cash bundles and gold biscuits coincides demonetization scheme which was introduced exactly a month ago According to IT officials the raids initially on Thursday yielded Rs 100 crores ( Rs 10 crores old notes and the remaining old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes. The bundles of the news Rs 2000 had no banking slips on the. They operations were done by a “ synidcate” involving bank officials for currency conversion. He is reported to have contracted works worth Rs 800 crores to sub contractors with least investment. His modus operandi was obtain lorry load of sand for Rs 630 and sell it ten times higher. That he is powerful in Chennai is evident from the fact that not a single brick or sand lorry would not move in Chennai city without his consent.. Sources to close AIDMK party said that on the recommendation of Jayalalitha, the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu has nominated Sekhar Reddy to the prestigious TTD board. By virtue of Board member he used to arrange special darshan to influential persons from various fields and seek favours later The AP government which has nominated to the TTD board has not verified his antecedents at all since the recommendation came from the top leaving any room for suspicion, The Endowments Minister of Andhra Pradesh Mr Manikyala Rao told “ Hi India” that the government is examining the IT raids and will soon take a decision to dismiss him from the Board. uch before she won over people in her political avatar, J. Jayalalithaa was the uncrowned queen and a very popular pin-up star of Tamil cinema during 1960s and 1970s. For all her reluctance to be an actor, her journey as one of the leading luminaries of south Indian cinema is more dramatic than any film script. Jayalalithaa breathed her last after a bitter 74-day battle for life. Though born in the lap of luxury, bad times fell upon the family when Jayalalithaa was very young, forcing her to follow her mother’s footsteps into acting in order to support the family. As an individual, Jayalalithaa hated limelight. In an interview to Simi Garewal, she had said, “I have been propelled by fate into two high-profiled careers (second being her stint as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu).” In 1961, when she was barely

introduced her in a leading role in 1964 Kannada film, Chinnada Gombe, and her performance in the film garnered a lot of attention. In 1965, she made her acting debut in Tamil and Telugu industries with films Vennira Adaia and Manshulu Mamathalu respectively. Her role as a girl with a mental disorder falling for her psychiatrist in Sridhar-directed Vennira Adai was well received. In 1965, when Panthulu cast her opposite the charismatic M.G Ramachandran (MGR) in Ayirathil Oruvan, little did he predict that the pair would go on create history. They worked together in 28

films. Many of her movies with MGR - Adimai Penn, Kavalkaran, Raman Thediya Seethai and Thedi Vanda Mappillai -are timeless and memorable even today. A little less known fact is that Jayalalithaa replaced Saroja Devi in Adimai Penn as the latter was married by then. MGR reshot the whole movie with her. The song Amma Endral Anbu from Adimai Penn also marked her singing debut. Jayalalithaa was known to reinvent on screen and she didn’t hesitate to take up glamorous roles, even if it required her to wear sleeveless blouse and tight-fitting salwar kameezes.

I NEW DELHI: Actress Deepika Padukone has been named the sexiest Asian woman in the world for the year 2016. She has dethroned actress Priyanka Chopra, who has won the title four times in the popular list that is annually published by Britainbased Eastern Eye newspaper. Deepika, who is soon set to make her Hollywood debut with "xXx: Return of Xander Cage" opposite actor Vin Diesel, said in a statement: "It does bring a smile to my face, but sexy means different things to different people. For me, it's not just physical. Being comfortable with who you are, is sexy. Confidence is sexy. Innocence and vulnerability is sexy." The 2016 edition of the popular annual poll was based on millions of votes pouring in from across the globe. n his big new release Raees, Shah Rukh Khan as the bootleg seller in Gujarat gets the boot on the other leg. This is his chance to show us “yet again”that he can play someone other than Rahul or Rohit. It’s a very flashy kind of presentation with pompous preening dialogues and broad bristling drama designed to make the characters look like relics of the past roaming dangerously in the present, as Shah Rukh Khan defiantly declares his dhanda to be his religion. There is a lot of religious symbolism in the backdrop, signifying that for all his nefarious activities, Shah Rukh’s Raees Khan is a deeply religious man.

Ameen to that. The similarities to Haji Mastan are unmissable, as is the attempt to pin the criminal protagonist down and declare him a criminal. The cop who is determined to get Raees is played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui whom we see trying to tone down his habitual exuberance by a few notches in front of the great Kind Khan’s cyclonic presence.

LOS ANGELES: The release date of upcoming action-comedy film Baywatch, which marks the Hollywood debut of Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra, has been pushed back by a week to May 26, Paramount Pictures has announced. The film, which was earlier slated for May 19, will now release alongside Johnny Depp’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man Tell No Tales and Rebecca Ferguson and Jake Gyllenhaal’s Life on the start of the Memorial Day holiday weekend, reports variety.com. Dwayne Johnson stars in the movie reboot of the 1990s television series Baywatch.

If Ray’s Jai Baba Felunath was about child abuse, Sujoy’s Kahaani 2 could have easily been a Ray creation. There is a tempting reservoir of Ray in Sujoy, specially in the way he uses sound. Sujoy takes sound recording far beyond what it entails in ‘realistic’ cinema. There is always amount of cogent incidental sounds happening on the soundtrack. Hotline for plaints of hate crimes

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart announced a reporting hotline for discrimination and hate crime incidents – (773) 674-HELP(4357) – for anyone who feels they are being threatened or targeted as a result of their religion, race, nationality and/or sexual orientation. Those who call the 24/7 hotline will receive a direct response to their incidents by Sheriff’s Office staff, who will help connect callers to other agencies, Sheriff’s detectives, or legal assistance if the matter would be best addressed by external resources. The impetus for a dedicated hotline to report for discrimination or hate crime issues came after Sheriff Dart heard directly about a sense of increasing fear and intimidation in the county’s minority communities, especially the Muslim American community. “The Chicago area has always drawn

BY A STAFF WRITER CHAUMBURG, IL -- The chief executive of a Schaumburg-based consulting firm is facing federal charges alleging he intentionally misrepresented the firm’s cash flow and concealed its liabilities in filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Nandu Thondavadi, 62, of North Barrington, was arrested on November 30 morning on charges of wire fraud, making false statements to the SEC and willfully certifying false financial reports. The CEO of Quadrant 4 System Corp. could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted of wire fraud, authorities said. .Also arrested was Quadrant 4’s chief financial officer, Dhru Desai, 55, of

According to the criminal complaint, Thondavadi certified filings that misrepresented and concealed from the company’s auditors and shareholders the terms of certain acquisitions and the amount of a liability stemming from a lawsuit. The misrepresentations and concealments were intended to artificially inflate the publicly traded company’s share price. Trump has promised to undo Obama’s executive actions, leading to fears among immigrant advocates that he would end Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood

Arrivals program. Hundreds of thousands of young immigrants have gained work permits and temporary protection from deportation under the 2012 program. Trump said: “We’re going to work something out that’s going to make people happy and proud.” Trump didn’t offer details, but said: “They got brought here at a very young age, they’ve worked here, they’ve gone to school here. NEW DELHI: If you cant eat icecream, frozen yogurt acts as an excellent, no fat replacement as it helps in digestion and nutrition, says an expert. Abhay Sharma, Chief Operations Officer, Menchie’s India, a frozen yogurt chain company, has listed out the reasons why you should go for it: It is undeniably fat-free: When compared to ice cream, frozen yogurt is technically a healthier option with fewer calories and half the fat of ice cream. The flavor of ice cream depends on its fat content, which means higher the quality, the more will be the fat content. On the contrary, the name frozen yogurt suggests that its main ingredient is yogurt. In ice creams, the main component is cream. This means that the frozen yogurt has almost no-fat compared to an ice cream. Digestion friendly: Its probiotic contents enhance the body’s digestive function, boost the immune system by catalyzing the production of essential vitamins, reduce allergic reactions and help in lactose digestion in people suffering from lactose intolerance.

Why repeated dieting may backfire IANS, LONDON

I

nstead of helping you slim down, repeated dieting may lead to weight gain because the brain interprets the diets as short famines and urges the person to store more fat for future shortages, a study says. The finding may explain why people who try low-calorie diets often overeat when not dieting and so do not keep the weight off. By contrast, people who do not diet would learn that food supplies are reliable and they do not need to

store so much fat, the study said. “Surprisingly, our model predicts that the average weight gain for dieters will actually be greater than those who never diet,” said Andrew Higginson, Senior Lecturer at the University of Exeter in England. “This happens because nondieters learn that the food supply is reliable so there is less need for the insurance of fat stores,” Higginson said. The study, published in the journal Evolution, Medicine and Public Health, is based on observations of animals such as birds.

Cancer drug may help women grow new eggs LONDON: Treatment with common chemotherapy drug combination appears to increase the number of young eggs in women’s ovaries, a new research has found. Although it is too soon to link the outcome to fertility, researchers believe more research is needed to better understand the implications and findings of the study, published in the journal Human Reproduction. If further research can reveal the mechanism by which treatment with the drug combination, known as ABVD, results in increased production of eggs, this would aid understanding of how women might be able to produce more eggs during their lifetime. This was until recently thought to be impossible. “This study involves only a few

patients, but its findings were consistent and its outcome may be significant and far-reaching. We need to know more about how this drug combination acts on the ovaries, and the implications of this,” said lead researcher Evelyn Telfer, Professor at University of Edinburgh in Britain. The researchers analysed samples of ovary tissue donated by 14 women who had undergone chemotherapy, and from 12 healthy women. The study showed that the ovaries from eight of the cancer patients, who had been treated with a drug combination had a much greater incidence of immature, or non-growing, eggs compared with tissue from women who had received a different chemotherapy, or from healthy women of a similar age.

Caesarean birth may affect evolution IANS, LONDON

C TEHRAN: Men who engage in continuous exercise regimen such as cycling, jogging, running, walking and rowing three-to-five times a week for six months can improve their sperm count and other measures of sperm quality, a new study has found. The study found that those following moderate exercise had more semen volume, higher sperm motility, improved sperm cell shape/morphology, more concentrated sperm and more sperm cells on average, when compared to the no exercise group. In addition, men in all exercise groups had improved sperm quality across all measures when compared to the samples from the noexercise group, the researchers said. “Our results show that doing exercise can be a simple, cheap and effective strategy for improving sperm quality in sedentary men,” said lead author Behzad Hajizadeh Maleki from the Urmia University in Iran. ontinuous usage of caesarean sections or c-section may be impacting human evolution as more mothers now need surgery to deliver a baby due to their narrow pelvis size, scientists say. C-section is the delivery of a baby through a surgical incision in the mother’s abdomen and uterus. “Women with a very narrow pelvis pass on their genes encoding for a narrow pelvis to their daughters,” Philipp Mitteroecker from the University of Vienna in Aus-

tria, was quoted as saying to bbc.com. Historically, these genes would not have been passed from

mother to child as both would have died in labour. However, today the global rate

of cases where the baby could not fit through the maternal birth canal have increased from 30 in 1,000 in the 1960s to 36 in 1,000 births. That is about a 10-20 per cent increase of the original rate, due to the evolutionary effect. Although, the trend is likely to continue, but not to the extent that non-surgical births will become obsolete, the researchers noted. The research was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

Eating nuts may reduce cancer risk IANS, LONDON

E

ating at least 20 gram of nuts a day -- equivalent to a handful -- can reduce the risk of a wide range of diseases including heart disease and cancer, new research has found. Handful of nuts daily can cut people’s risk of coronary heart disease by nearly 30 per cent, their risk of cancer by 15 per cent, and their risk of premature death by 22 per cent, the study said. The study included all kinds of tree nuts, such as hazel nuts and walnuts, and also peanuts -- which are actually legumes. The results - published in

the journal BMC Medicine - were in general similar whether total nut intake, tree nuts or peanuts were analysed. What makes nuts so potentially beneficial is their nutritional value, said study co-author Dagfinn Aune from Imperial College London. “Nuts and peanuts are high in fibre, magnesium, and polyunsaturated fats — nutrients that are beneficial for cutting cardiovascular disease risk and which can reduce cholesterol levels,” Aune said. “Some nuts, particularly walnuts and pecan nuts are also high in antioxidants, which can fight oxidative stress and possibly reduce cancer risk,” Aune added.
