Nikki Haley could be the next Secretary of State If Republican Haley gets a cabinet job in Trump administration, she would be the first Indian American to ascend to that level IANS, NEW YORK
I
ndian American Governor Nikki Haley is one of the contenders for Secretary of State or other cabinet positions in the Donald Trump administration, according to media reports. Setting aside their campaign feuds, the South Carolina Governor had a “good meeting” with President-elect Donald Trump here on Thursday. “They had a good discussion, and she is very encouraged about the coming administration and the new direction it will bring to Washington,” her spokesperson Rob Godfrey said after the meeting. Trump’s former campaign manager Kellyanne Conway was noncommittal about a position for Haley in the Trump administration. “We’re just happy to have her here for her advice and counsel and to hear about the great success story of South Carolina,” she told reporters. On Wednesday, when Haley’s meeting with Trump was scheduled, CNN and MSNBC independently quoted unnamed sources in the Trump transition team as saying that she was being considered for the foreign policy job. Now there is mention in the media that she may be also considered for commerce secretary given her strong track record in getting foreign investment into her state. If Republican Haley gets a cabinet job, she would be the first Indi-
Democrats prepare to elect new leader WASHINGTON: The Democratic Party is preparing to elect a new leader following the unexpected electoral defeat of White House hopeful Hillary Clinton. The interim chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) veteran political operative Donna Brazile assumed the position temporarily following the resignation of Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Schulz, criticized for influencing the primary process to help Clinton win over Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, Efe reported. After losing the presidency, the Democrats need a new leader to design a winning strategy for the coming years. —IANS

the Senate. Three Indian Americans, Raja Krishnamoorthi from Illinois, Pramila Jayapal of Washington state, and Ro Khanna of California won seats on the House of Representatives, where they will join fellow-Democrat Ami Bera of
California, who was re-elected. However, a late development cast a shadow on Haley’s hopes for America’s top diplomatic job. The Republican presidential candidate in 2012, Mitt Romney, was scheduled to meet Trump over the weekend. He has said that the only job he would be interested in was secretary of state, leading to new intense media speculation that he may be up for the job. Like Haley, Romney has been a vehement critic of Trump during the campaign - and in turn was hammered by Trump. While Haley said towards the end of the campaign that she would vote for Trump, although she had reservations, Romney did not take back his assertion that he would never vote for the Republican nominee. Trump, who ran a scorch earth campaign, is now reaching out to his critics in an attempt douse the flames of discord he had flamed. Speculations about Trump’s cabinet choices have been rapidly changing. First reports said that former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and former UN Permanent Representative John Bolton were the front runners for secretary of state. Both came under criticism for their advocacy of aggressive foreign interventions in contrast to Trump’s own cautious policy. Haley is the daughter of Sikh immigrants from Amritsar district and her full name is Nimrata Nikki Randhwa Haley. She is married to Michael Haley.
Obama urged to protect immigration in remaining term WASHINGTON: The Obama administration should protect those “dreamers”, who were brought to the US illegally but later granted legal temporary status to stay, a US Congresswoman has said. The Obama administration in the remaining term should take legal action to prevent those who enrolled in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and Deferred Action for Parents of American and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA) programmes from being deported, Xinhua news agency quoted Judy Chu, the first Chinese American Congresswoman, as saying. Chu, who was elected as the US Representative for California’s 27th Congressional district in 2009 and retained her seat in the election early this month, served on the House Judiciary Committee. People who applied for DACA or DAPA provided “extensive” sensitive information such as finger prints and relatives’ home addresses to the government knowing that it will not be used against them, the Democratic congresswoman said. California, which had more than two million undocumented immigrants, the most in the country, became the battle ground for many state officials over immigration issues. Data estimated that as of 2016 about 1,932,000 people in the US are eligible for the DACA programme, and about 30 per cent of them lived in California. The Los Angeles Police Department pledged on Monday that it would not participate in deporting undocumented immigrants, nor would it honor government requests to help deport people. —IANS
Democrats must not be discouraged: Clinton IANS, WASHINGTON
H
illary Clinton urged supporters “not to give up” in her first public appearance since she suffered a shocking defeat to Republican Donald Trump in the November 8 Presidential election. “I know many of you are deeply disappointed about the results of the election,” she said to the crowd at the Children’s Defense Fund gala here. “I am too, more than I can ever express.” The former Secretary of State said appearing in public was not the easiest thing for her, NBC News reported. “There have been a few times this past week when all I wanted to do is just to curl up with a good

book or our dogs and never leave the house again,” Clinton said. Nevertheless, the former presi-
dential nominee attempted to inspire her audience and emphasized a line of Martin Luther King
Jr. that is often quoted by President Barack Obama: “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” “The divisions laid bare by this election run deep, but please listen to me when I say this... America is worth it. Our children are worth it. Believe in our country, fight for our values and never, ever give up,” she added. During the rest of her speech, she emphasized bipartisanship, advocacy, volunteerism and investing in the children of the US — no matter their race, religion or immigration status, NBC News said. At the event, Clinton was introduced by Marian Wright Edelman, a friend who founded the Children’s Defense Fund in 1973.

Trump sends mixed signals to India
India would need to watch and wait what a Trump presidency could do for a carefully crafted India-US strategic relationship doublespeak. During the final presidential debate he referred positively to India, its high growth rate and spoke of his business relationships here. At an Indian American rally in New Jersey in October, in front of a large gathering of Indian media, he originally described himself as an admirer of “Hindus”. When the anchor pointed out that all Indians were not Hindus, he side-stepped and spoke of being a big fan of India. Early in the campaign, he complained of outsourcing, about jobs being “shipped out” to India and alleged misuse of H1B visas. He voiced strong criticism of call-centres being outsourced to India and Indians. After he used a false Indian accent to mock Indian call-centre workers, he sought to wriggle out of it by clarifying that India was a great place and his anger was not against India but against outsourcing. Whether this is feasible or possible remains to be seen, but it has troubling implications for our bilateral relationship. His statements on Pakistan have been equally ambiguous with hints that he would seek help from India
BHASWATI MUKHERJEE, NEW DELHI
O
n November 9 the unthinkable happened after the most polarized election in US history. With the so-called swing states — Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania — choosing Donald Trump, the so-called Clinton Firewall was breached and, despite a lower share of the popular vote, Trump convincingly won the presidency. What are the implications for India and the bilateral relationship? Much would depend on his choice of Secretary of State and whether his governance style would be decentralised with the President depending on a team of dedicated technocrats. This would be the best option, given his ignorance on global and strategic issues. Early trends are not encouraging. His transition team includes four members of his family as well as corporate consultants and lobbyists with little knowledge of global challenges for US interests worldwide. Trump’s approach to India has been contradictory with much
and other nations to address the “problem” of what he described as a “semi-unstable” nuclear-armed Pakistan. His policy on Afghanistan is equally unclear with hints that he would cut down on US commitments overseas. In the global arena, his victory is being interpreted as the rejection of globalisation. After Brexit, there are crucial elections coming up in France and Germany and the rise of ultra-right wing parties in many parts of Europe. There are now fears that Marie Le Pen, President of the National Front, would easily make it to the second round of the French presidential elections. In Germany, Frauke Petry is the leader of the rightwing Alternative for Germany who is radically opposed to Chancellor Angela Merkel’s immigration and refugee policy and of ‘Islamification’ of Germany. With his finger on the nuclear button, the world would have to treat him with more respect than they presently do. India would need to watch and wait what a Trump presidency could do for a carefully crafted India-US strategic ties.
Trump, advisers seek to quell rumors of transition team chaos Barack Obama said he will strive to reassure US allies of President-elect Donald Trump’s interest in maintaining his country’s core strategic relationships
IANS, WASHINGTON
U
S President-elect Donald Trump and some of his advisers sought to quell reports of disorganisation on the transition team and fierce internal battles among its members. Trump once again took to Twitter this week to reject the reports of chaos and infighting, saying in a tweet-storm that the process of selecting members of his future Cabinet was going “so smoothly”, Efe news reported. That stance was echoed by two other people acting as advisers to the transition team and who in recent days had severely limited their remarks about the progress in crafting the group of staffers that
will accompany Trump to the White House. According to transition team communications director Jason Miller, Trump is taking a “very structured, methodical approach” in designing his future administration, although so far only two important posts have been publicly announced. Officials are “making good on President-elect Trump’s promise that we’re not going to have any lobbyists involved with the transition efforts. When we talk about draining the swamp, this is one of the first steps. And so, the bottom line is, we’re going to get the transition team where we need it to be,” Miller said. Some of the alleged internal

fights have been attributed to Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, who — according to some versions — may have pushed for the removal of New Jersey Governor Chris Christie as head of the transition team. However, according to Trump and his spokesmen, none of that is true, everything is proceeding in a very “organised” way and, as Miller
insisted on Wednesday, there is a firm plan in place to fill posts in the new administration. So far, the President-elect’s team has announced the appointment of Republican National Committee chief Reince Priebus as Trump’s future chief of staff and Brietbart News director Stephen Bannon as the mogul’s chief strategist and senior adviser.

I
ndia and Japan signed the long-awaited civil nuclear agreement following the annual bilateral summit here on Friday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi wooed Japanese businessmen by reiterating his resolve to make India the most open economy in the world. “Today’s signing of the Agreement for Cooperation in Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy marks a historic step in our engagement to build a clean energy partnership,” Modi said in a joint address to the media along with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe after delegation-level talks between the two sides. “Our cooperation in this field will help us combat the challenge of climate change. I also acknowledge the special significance that such an agreement has for Japan,” he said. “I thank Prime Minister Abe, the
India, Israel to fight terror NEW DELHI: India and Israel said the international community must act with resolve against terror networks and states that harbour them and agreed to boost cooperation to combat the forces of extremism and radicalization. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who held talks with visiting Israeli President Reuven Rivlin here, said that engagement between India and Israel was multi-dimensional and wide-ranging. He said the two leaders value their strong and growing partnership to secure their societies. “Our people are constantly threatened by forces of terrorism and extremism. We recognize that terrorism is a global challenge, knows no boundaries and has extensive links with other forms of organized crime,” Modi said in a joint briefing with the Israel president. Without naming Pakistan, Modi said “Regrettably, one of the countries of its origin and spread is in India’s neighborhood.” “We agreed that the international community must act with resolve and determination against terror networks and states that harbour them. Failure to act and silence of speech only encourages the terrorists,” he said. Japanese government and the parliament for their support to this agreement.” According to a joint statement issued after the summit, the two
Prime Ministers welcomed the agreement “which reflects a new level of mutual confidence and strategic partnership in the cause of clean energy, economic development and
a peaceful and secure world”. The agreement provides for the development of nuclear power projects in India, thus strengthening energy security of the country. It will open the door for collaboration between Indian and Japanese industries in India’s civil nuclear programme. US firms like Westinghouse and GE Energy, which have significant Japanese investments, will also now find it easier to set up nuclear power plants in India. Apart from Japan, other countries with which India now has civil nuclear agreements include the US, Russia, Australia, Canada, France, Britain, South Korea, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Namibia and Argentina. India made no additional commitments in the civil nuclear agreement signed with Japan during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Tokyo for the annual bilateral summit, it is reliably learnt.

“Currently there is need of a donor, for which the emphasis is for someone within the blood relation. However, the problem is that her (Swaraj’s) daughter who could be the donor is also diabetic, making it impossible,” said the source. The team of doctors for the treatment of Sushma Swaraj includes, Head of Endocrinology Nikhil Tandon, Head of Pulmonary Medicine Randeep Guleria, Chief of Cardio Thoracic and Head of Nephrology Sandeep Mahajan. Earlier, Sushma Swaraj was admitted to the AIIMS for several weeks in April this year due to chest congestion.
BRIEFS Sartaj Aziz to visit India to ease hostility ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s foreign policy chief, Sartaj Aziz, has said that he plans to attend the Heart of Asia Conference in India on December 3 and suggested the visit could be used to “defuse the tension” between the nuclear-armed neighbors. “Unlike India, that had sabotaged Saarc summit in Pakistan by pulling out, Pakistan will respond by participating in the Heart of Asia being held in Amritsar, India, on December 3,” confirmed Aziz to PTV news. The adviser said he himself will participate in the conference. Aziz, however, said it has not been confirmed yet whether he will meet his Indian counterpart on the sidelines of the conference or not. “Despite the fact that Indian forces killed our seven soldiers along Line of Control, Pakistan will not boycott the conference,” Aziz maintained. Aziz’s trip to India would be the first by a senior Pakistani official since gunmen killed 19 soldiers Uri town of Jammu and Kashmir.
Rivlin wishes Swaraj speedy recovery NEW DELHI: Visiting Israeli President Reuven Rivlin this week called on External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, who is suffering from kidney failure, and wished her immediate recovery. “’Bless you with immediate recovery’. @PresidentRuvi conveys to EAM @SushmaSwaraj while calling to enquire about her health,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup tweeted. “It is a great honor to have you here in our treatment facility in Agra — a place which is a unique manifestation of the close bonding
between Israel and India,” said Elad Frenkel, Chairman of Israeli Water Sector Steering Committee and CEO of Aqwise. Frankel said the demand for Israeli technologies is on account of its innovativeness and efficiency, particularly in the cleantech sector. The Israeli President surprised everyone when he sipped water from a glass filled with the treated water at the plant. Addressing a public rally at the Azadpur fruit wholesale market here, Kejriwal alleged a conspiracy behind Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to spike 500 and 1,000 rupee notes that has led to a cash chaos across the country. Calling the after-effects of the demonetization a “crisis”, Kejriwal people didn’t have cash even to buy meet basic needs. “If this was indeed against corruption and black money, the first to support you would have been Arvind Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party,” he said. “Take back this decision in three days... Don’t test people’s patience. Otherwise, there will be a ‘bagaawat’ (revolt) by people.” Reminding the audience that he had been an Income Tax commissioner, the AAP leader said it was beyond his understanding how corruption and black money could be

Currency press capacity NEW DELHI: Will new notes which replace the demonetized currency find itself in circulation soon? Unlikely, if the capacity of all the currency printing presses in the country is taken into account. The latest calculation, based on capacities of the currency printing presses, shows that replenishment would take around six months.
This is particularly true for the new Rs 500 notes, whose printing, presumably, started after November 10. Till those are replenished in adequate numbers, the “currency pain” would not go away since Rs 2,000 notes are difficult to exchange for lower denominations. However, enough of the new Rs 2,000 notes may already have been printed, calculations show.
Cash withdrawal norms eased NEW DELHI: The government on Thursday announced a set of seven decisions pertaining to demonetization, mainly aimed at smooth sowing season ahead, including permission to farmers to withdraw up to Rs 25,000 per week and registered agri-traders Rs 50,00 per week from their bank accounts. This apart, for families that have an upcoming wedding, one member of the household can withdraw up to
Rs 250,000 one-time, subject to furnishing an undertaking that no other individual will be availing such a concession for the purpose and also upon giving the PAN card details. However, the amount of money that an individual can exchange from banks by handing over the old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes has been lowered to Rs 2,000 from Rs 4,500 with effect from Friday.

NEW DELHI: The Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day on Thursday as a united opposition demanded a debate on demonetization under a parliamentary provision that entails voting, which was not acceptable to the government. Soon after the house met, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge
urged Speaker Sumitra Mahajan to accept their notice for an adjournment motion. Under the adjournment motion, all other business is set aside and the debate is followed by voting. But Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar said the debate should be a short duration discussion under rule 193.
people to surrender the spiked currency and write off the bad debts. Addressing the rally earlier, Banerjee said the government’s decision had led to economic instability in the country. “What did they say? Achche din (good days) are coming. Is this achche din?” she asked, taking a jibe at Modi’s slogans that his government would bring in better times for people of India. “Truckers tell me they don’t have money to pay drivers. Trucks are the lifeline of the nation. What will happen if trucks stop running and mandis stop getting vegetables and fruits? “What will people eat? Diamonds? ATMs? What kind of a joke is this? There is no money for people to buy food, baby food, medicines?
What will farmers do?” she asked, adding the situation was not this bad even during the 1975-77 Emergency period. The Trinamool Congress chief said she supported the government’s move to curb black money but won’t let the mayhem continue in the name of fighting corruption. Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad on Thursday said the government’s move of demonetization has “killed more people than Pakistani-backed terrorism”. A total of 42 people have died across the country in incidents related to problems they reportedly faced since the demonetization move was announced on the night of November 8.

inda, a 34-year-old tourist from Sweden, has been facing a traumatic time standing in bank queues for the past few days to get cash. Apart from the shortage of cash, she has had to suffer people clicking her photo without permission, getting stalked and even listening to lewd comments passed at her. Since the demonetization move a week ago, Linda and other foreign tourists are an upset lot. “For the last three days it’s been a big challenge to get some cash,” Linda told IANS standing in the middle of a crushing queue of around 400 people at a Citibank ATM kiosk in Paharganj. “I had to go to three banks, and everyday I had to spend around three to four hours to get cash,” Linda said, referring to the severe cash crunch in the country since the government spiked 500 and

1,000 rupee notes on November 8. Many other foreign tourists in Delhi are finding it tough to manage. Rebecca, from England who was on a month’s trip to India, told IANS, “I have had to cut short my trip due to the cash crunch. Now I am going back just after 18 days.” Sharing her experience of standing in the bank queues, Rebecca said, “Standing in the queues is very scary. People stare, they try to come close and they follow us and stalk.”
Kem, a tourist from Japan residing in a hotel in Paharganj area, told IANS: “I have run out of cash. I am unable to buy any food items due to that, so every night I wait at the window of my hotel room and keep a tab on the Citibank ATM just to find out when it will open.” Kem said he was left with only a Rs 100 note and the cash crisis had forced him to cancel his trip to Jaisalmer in Rajasthan.

Brexit comes under cloud PM Theresa May hopes to invoke Article 50 — beginning the formal two-year process for leaving the EU — by the end of March 2017 IANS, LONDON
T
he UK government “does not recognize” and has no overall plan for Britain’s exit from the European Union (EU), a leaked memo has revealed. Obtained by The Times, the memo dated November 7 warned that Whitehall (the center of the British Queen’s government, a street lined by offices of government departments and Ministries) was working on 500 Brexit-related projects and could need 30,000 extra staff, the BBC reported on Tuesday. It also highlighted what it called “divisions within the cabinet” over the direction of Brexit negotiations. Transport Secretary Chris Grayling told the BBC that he had “no idea” where the memo came from. He rejected the memo’s estimate of an extra 30,000 civil servants that could be required to meet

The leaked memo — written by an un-named consultant and entitled “Brexit Update” — suggests it will take another six months before the government decides precisely what it wants to achieve from Brexit or agrees on its priorities. The memo also suggests that the
government does not have enough officials to implement Brexit quickly, the BBC added. Meanwhile, a Supreme Court judge of Britain recently suggested that Brexit could be delayed by months, even as long as two years because “comprehensive” legislation was required to trigger Article 50. Lady Hale told an audience in Kuala Lumpur that “another question” for the court was “whether it would be enough for a simple act of Parliament to authorize the government to give notice, or whether it would have to be a comprehensive replacement for the 1972 (EEC Accession) Act”, Sky News reported on Tuesday. Sky News reported last week that the government was preparing a short bill to push through both the Commons and the Lords to try to keep its March deadline for triggering Article 50.

Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden, Switzerland, Britain, the US and the Walloon Region (Belgium). Others, including Japan, have publicly declared their intention to support the fund. Likewise, 360 businesses and investors on Wednesday reaffirmed their financial support and sought continuation of the US commitments towards the Paris Climate Agreement by the upcoming new administration in order to provide the long-term direction needed to limit global warming. “Increasing transparency and enhancing countries’ capacity for monitoring and evaluation are
lynchpins for the Paris Agreement,” the GEF Chairperson said. “The CBIT will allow us to see early action on the ground, and help countries scale up their efforts to deliver their national climate plans,” Ishii said. Ishii said she is “very happy that the GEF was able to respond quickly to the request from Paris COP21 to establish the CBIT” and noted that a number of donors have already lined up to support the initiative. At the same time, the first set of projects have been approved by the GEF for implementation in Costa Rica, Kenya and South Africa.

he number of Indian students studying in the US has gone up to over 165,000 during academic year 2015-16, a growth of 25 per cent over the previous year, says a recently released report. According to the 2016 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange, there are 165,918 students from India, making it the second leading country of origin among international students in the US. “This was the highest absolute increase of students ever and followed the previous year’s record growth,” said a statement released by the US consulate. pleased to see the record back-toback, year-on-year growth in student numbers,” said US Ambassador Richard R. Verma. “With efforts such as our Passport to India initiative, we are also seeing the number of American students in India beginning to grow,” he added.
The Open Doors report is published annually by the Institute of International Education in partnership with the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. According to the report, the number of international students in US colleges and universities surpassed one million for the first time during the 201516 academic year. The number of international students increased by seven per cent over the previous year to a new high of nearly 1,044,000, representing five per cent of the total student population at US institutions. This strong growth confirms that the US remains the destination of choice in higher education. In 2015-16, there were nearly 69,000 more international students in US higher education compared to the previous year. India is ranked 13th among the top 25 destinations of US study abroad.

rime Minister Narendra Modi said he was aware of the hardship people were facing in India because of the demonetization move, but emphasized that it was necessary in the larger interests of the nation. Addressing the Indian diaspora in Japan, Modi said people back home were hailing his decision of rendering Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes invalid but some of them were being prodded to speak against the government because of politics. “I know it is difficult. People are made to speak against Modi but I salute the people... some stood in the queues for five hours, six hours but endured the hardship. The same way as people in Japan endured in 2011,” he said, referring the earthquake-triggered tsunami five years ago that hit Japan. He said the government had not taken the decision on demonetization in haste. “We had given 50 days to people to show their unaccounted wealth” till September, before the government decided to render the large currency bills

secures draw for India in first Test
Kohli was accompanied by local lad Ravindra Jadeja (32 not out) when the match ended inconclusively
Will not take England for granted, says Kohli RAJKOT: India Test cricket captain Virat Kohli reckons that England should not be taken for granted after they put India under intense pressure on the final day of the first Test that ended in a draw. Chasing a 310-run target on the final day, India survived anxious moments before posting 172/6 in their second innings to force the draw at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium here. Kohli was accompanied by local star Ravindra Jadeja (32 not out) when the match ended inconclusively. Kohli said he expected a much better fielding effort from his side for the next match after several dropped catches helped England reach a commanding position. “We could have been much better on first two of the game. We dropped five catches. England are a side we are not going to take for granted. Good to get things done in the end.

Need to correct the things we need to. England’s bowlers put constant pressure. We need to accept what happened,” Kohli said after the match here. “Good opportunity to find out new things about your game. Couldn’t get a better chance to practice other aspects of your game (towards the end). Important to convince yourself you can negotiate what’s thrown at you,” he added. Commenting on the match, England captain Alastair Cook, who slammed his 30th Test century the second innings, said he is satisfied with team’s performance. “We had really tough five days and it was a good toss to win. In India if you score 530, you’re always in the game. We played good cricket and were relentless with the ball. We didn’t let India score too quickly. To keep them to 480, we did well,” Cook said. —IANS
kipper Virat Kohli hit a responsible unbeaten 49 runs to help India secure a nervy draw on the final day of the first cricket Test against England here this week. Chasing a 310-run target, India survived anxious moments before posting 172/6 in their second innings to force the draw on the fifth and final day at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium. Kohli was accompanied by local lad Ravindra Jadeja (32 not out) when the match ended inconclusively. Spinner Adil Rashid (3/64) was England’s most successful bowler in the second innings. Other spinners Moeen Ali and Zafar Ansari took a wicket each. Earlier, England declared their second innings at 260/3 shortly after lunch — an overall lead of 309 runs — with captain Alastair Cook slamming a fine knock of 130 runs — his 30th Test century and fifth in India. It left the hosts to chase 310 runs off a minimum 49 overs on the degrading Rajkot pitch. India were reduced to 71/4 quickly, and were left battling for survival in Rajkot, which hosted its first ever Test match. They lost Gautam Gambhir (0) in the second over of the second innings, dismissed by pacer Chris Woakes. Joe Root took a simple catch at second slip to send back the opener. Following the wicket, came
Cheteshwar Pujara (18), who along with Vijay forged a crucial 47-run partnership for the second wicket to steady the inning. But just when things seemed good, spinner Adil Rashid sent back Pujara shortly before the tea break. Pujara missed the straight delivery from Rahid and was struck right in front. India were 49/2 at tea requiring still 261 more runs to win. The post-tea session saw a downward spiral that also accounted for opener Murali Vijay (31). This hurt India’s cause as both Pujara and Vijay were dismissed within the space of nine deliveries after having got set. Ajinkya Rahane (1) also didn’t last long. Kohli then steadied the chase with a timely 47-run partnership with Ravichandran Ashwin (32). But India were subjected to further pressure when Ashwin departed at 118/5 with a minimum 11 overs still left to play. Wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha (9) was the next to go. But Kohli, with considerable help from Jadeja, nipped England’s hopes in the bud. Earlier, England captain Alastair Cook (130) slammed his 30th century to pull England to 260/3, extending their overall lead to 309, when they declared after lunch. It was Cook’s fifth century in India, that put the visitors in a commanding position. For India, leg-spinner Amit Mishra took two wickets for 60 runs. The other wicket belonged to Ashwin.

Enjoying a career-best year, Murray is now 73-9 with eight titles overall and has extended his winning streak to 20 matches since September 20. Murray broke twice to take a 31 lead while Cilic, who committed 17 unforced errors, looked for a second break, but Murray was able to clinch the 46-minute opener. In the second set, Murray broke twice in a run of five straight games to wrap up victory. “A big thank you for all of the support, it was an incredible atmosphere today,” Murray said. “I really appreciate it.” Nishikori, who is playing the year-end finale for the third straight year, needed only 67 minutes to prevail. T
amil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa this week said she had a “rebirth” because of the prayers of the people and urged the AIADMK activists to work hard for the party’s victory in upcoming by-elections. Jayalalithaa said in a signed statement issued here that she was happy to share the information that she had received the blessings of people in Tamil Nadu, other states and other countries too. She said she was waiting to resume normal work after getting well soon. The 68-year-old Jayalalithaa was admitted to Apollo Hospitals with fever and dehydration on September 22. The doctors later said she needed a longer stay at the hospital as she was suffering from infection and put her on respiratory support. Jayalalithaa urged the AIADMK
Union: Don’t support bankers helping currency hoarders CHENNAI: A major bank union said it does not support unscrupulous bankers who do not follow the prescribed procedures and who assist currency hoarders to convert their invalid 500 and 1,000 rupee notes. “I am ashamed to hear about bankers who do not follow prescribed procedures while exchanging the invalid currency notes for valid ones. But the system is such that I cannot say all are angels,” All India Bank Employees’ Association General Secretary C.H.Venkatachalam told IANS. “The union does not support such acts or those indulging in such acts,” he added. Complaints have been voiced by customers of some banks that somebody else has exchanged the demonetised currency notes, using their accounts with the assistance of bank employees. The Reserve Bank of India in its instructions has clearly said that a person who does not have a bank account can exchange the 500/1,000 rupee notes using a bank account of his relative/friend having an account only on written permission. —IANS

said Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa’s infection is fully under control and she needs recuperation. Jayalalithaa’s infection is under control and what is needed is recuperation, Apollo Hospitals’ Chairman Pratap C. Reddy told
reporters here. According to him, Jayalalithaa’s discharge depends on her as she can go home whenever she feels like. The 68-year-old Jayalalithaa was admitted to the hospital for fever and dehydration on September 22. The doctors later said she needed a longer stay at the hospital as she was suffering from infection and put her on respiratory support. According to Apollo Hospitals, a team of specialist doctors — cardiologists, respiratory physicians, consultants for infectious diseases, diabetologist and endocrinologist - treated her. Last week, a senior AIADMK leader said Jayalalithaa may be discharged from Apollo Hospitals in less than 15 days. “In less than 15 days she might be discharged. All her vital parameters are under control. She is being given physiotherapy exercises,” AIADMK spokesperson C. Ponnaiyan told IANS.
‘Jaya unsympathetic to peoples’ woes’ CHENNAI: DMK’s M.K. Stalin, Leader of Opposition in Tamil Nadu Assembly, criticised Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa for not expressing even words of comfort to people suffering cash crunch but focussing on their votes instead. In a statement issued here, Stalin referring to Jayalalithaa’s statement, said at a time when common people in the state are not able to buy their daily essentials due to currency crunch there is nothing in the Chief Minister’s statement alleviating the people’s problem or even providing some words of comfort. Jayalalithaa had said she had a “rebirth” because of prayers of the people and urged the AIADMK to work for the party’s victory in upcoming by-elections. She said she was waiting to resume normal work after getting well soon. Elderly dies in queue as India battles cash chaos IANS, HYDERABAD
A
70-year-old man died this week while standing in a queue outside a bank in Andhra Pradesh as common people across India continued to struggle for cash, the way they have been doing since the government spiked high value currency notes. Lakshminarayana, 75, collapsed while waiting in a long queue for over two hours at an Andhra Bank
branch in Marredpally in Secunderabad, the twin city of Hyderabad, witnesses said. He was rushed to a hospital
where doctors declared him dead due to cardiac arrest. A resident of Railway Colony in Secunderabad, he had gone to deposit Rs.1.7 lakh in scrapped currency notes of Rs 500 and 1,000. The witnesses said there was a huge rush at the bank and Lakshminarayana had to wait very long in the absence of a separate queue for senior citizens — despite official directives to banks to ensure one. Elsewhere in India, as millions
mobbed banks and ATMs, the mass struggle continued endlessly in the wake of the November 8 announcement of demonetisation of large currency notes. Men and women stood in serpentine queues for hours to exchange or deposit their spiked notes with new ones or withdraw cash to meet their daily expenses. Some of them were successful and many others lost patience when they couldn’t get any money.

he lavish wedding of former Karnataka minister and mining baron Gali Janardhan Reddy’s daughter raised eyebrows for its pomp and grandeur — held at a time when millions are queueing up outside banks and ATMs for cash. Over 50,000 people thronged the wedding venue at the Bangalore Palace to bless the couple. “At the auspicious time in the early hours, Rajeev Reddy, 25, tied
the nuptial knot with bride Brahmani, 21, amid chanting of Vedic hymns in accordance with the Hindu tradition,” Reddy’s associate Manju Swamy told IANS. Rajeev is the son of Hyderabadbased industrialist, Vikram Deva Reddy, with business interests overseas. Billed as one of the most expensive marriages in the subcontinent, the five-day grand event drew all-round flak and envy. “It is unfortunate that a daughter’s wedding was made an issue out of envy and rivalry though it’s

Being an actor doesn’t mean merely photocopying the expressions and
dialogues given in the script, rather a life has to be given to that role. In that case, I was really stunned by the performance Vijay Antony sir gave in the demonic role,” Pradeep said in a statement. Assuring that the film is packed with several edge-of-the-seat moments, the director said that the film’s story also has more than just the demonic side of its protagonist. Nearly 85 per cent of the film has already been completed. “We have one more schedule in Mumbai. If everything goes as planned, we hope to release it in the beginning of next year,” Gautham added.

Saumya Tandon, who became a household name with AndTV Show Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai said “It’s an absolutely historic decision by the Prime Minister. Adi sir wanted to make the film with me and I am involved in the project from its scripting. I am glad that my mentor has given me the opportu-
nity to work under his direction. It’s a big deal for me,” said the actor at the launch of “You and I” song of Befikre here with Vaani Kapoor, his co-star in the movie. Befikre is set to release next month.
‘Rock On 2’: The movie is not at all rocking enough Ban on bigger notes affecting ‘Rock On 2’ MUMBAI: Rock On 2 producer Ritesh Sidhwani says it is disappointing that the film’s box office collection got affected due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to demonetize Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes. “Of course, it is disappointing. There was collateral damage to what the larger picture was by the government.” Sidhwani told IANS. “ We can’t be selfish, but personally it is disappointing because you made a film for two years and there is no second chance that we will get.” He added. “We won’t have a second chance because next week there will be some other film,” Sidhwani mentioned. —IANS

sequel to the 2008 film, Rock On!!, which was about the coming together of a band called Magic, this one is more than the reinforcement of the band. The narrative begins with the band being dismantled once again not because of differences between the team members, but because each one of them has their own demons to deal with. Aditya (Farhan Akthar) hounded by the guilt of a suicide case, settles in Meghalaya with his solitude and the villagers, helping them have a better life. Joe Mascarenhas (Arjun Rampal), concerned about who is going to pay his bills, becomes a club manager and a reality show judge. birthday and they decide to reassemble their once famous band. Meanwhile, as deus ex machina, Aditya’s path crosses with Jiah Sharma, a music enthusiast recording local talent in Meghalaya. And in Mumbai, Uday, Jiah’s friend sends her CD to the trio. It is only when the five of them assemble at Joe’s office, that there is an instant acceptance, but not with-
out their own hurdles. Meanwhile, disaster strikes in the form of a forest fire and destroys the village Aditya had adopted. So, he goes back to Meghalaya to salvage the villagers from their miseries. And what better way to raise funds than a rock concert. The story credited to Abhishek Kapoor and Pubali Chaudhari is interesting, but the plot is staid and
formulaic with each scene packed with conflict, making the entire tale seem dramatic and forced. Also, the blatant plot holes due to the cinematic liberties taken make viewing a dreary fare. With no memorable lines and the use of staid imagery, the dialogues written by Farhan are lame and run-of-the-mill. The characters too don’t grow organically and thus there is a dissent with the viewers. Farhan with his weak coarse voice as the lead singer is not imposing. Though he strives to put his heart into the character, he fails miserably while internalizing his pain and his forlorn, unkempt look further accentuates his clumsiness.

The weather data could be analysed down to the minute in the exact area where the clients lived. The study focused on a clinical population instead of a general population and used a mental health treatment outcome measure to

Joe Crowley, D-N.Y., for a walking tour and town hall in the Jackson Heights neighborhood. “I always enjoy going to New York and Jackson Heights holds a particularly important place in my heart, not only because it is one of the most diverse places in America, but also because I have fond memories of my parents bringing me here as a child,” said Murthy in a statement released by Crowley’s press team. Murthy, an Indian American who grew up in Florida before matriculating to Harvard University where he earned a bachelor’s, then Yale for his medical degree and MBA, received a tour of the neighborhood to explore its diversity. During the tour, Crowley and Murthy

The flu vaccine is among the many covered benefits, free of charge, under the Act. Crowley and Murthy also popped into Patel Brothers supermarket and discussed the benefits of healthy eating and living a healthy lifestyle.

Sikhs honor Major of Salvation Army BY A STAFF WRITER ALATINE, IL- Sikhs honored Major Nancy V Powers at Sikh Religious Society (SRS) Palatine, Illinois for her contribution and dedication for her services to Salvation Army. Salvation Army provides free food and clothing to needy people throughout the world. Sikhs from Chicago area became involved with Salvation Army in 1992 when they started feeding the homeless at Salvation Army headquarters on Thanksgiving Day. Thanksgiving Day is a national Holiday in America. Salvation Army provides food to about 2500 people on the special day. In 2008, Salvation Army had to shift their office, so some services were put on hold. Now they are back to normal and Sikhs have resumed their contribution. Sikhs will also provide free lunch on Christmas Day, too. A donation box is kept at SRS office for people contribution. Half
BY A STAFF WRITER OWN AND COUNTRY, MO – The police are trying to determine who scratched ‘Trump’ into the side of an Indian-American family’s car over the weekend. “Is this a random vandalism act, or am I targeted because I am a minority?” said Sudhir Avirneni. “My family and most of my neighbors are very concerned about the racial undertones of the message.” Avirneni said he watched the contentious presidential race unfold and heard discriminatory remarks made by Donald Trump and his supporters against immigrants. And he has seen reports from across the country of vandalism and violence against minorities following Trump’s victory. It’s against that backdrop that Avirneni is concerned. Avirneni said the incident happened sometime between 9 pm on (Nov 12) and 7 am (Nov 13). The vandalism was discovered as he and his wife were getting ready to take their older son to a music class. The 4-inch letters were scratched onto a passenger door of their 2008 Honda Accord, parked in the driveway. He said it marks the first time in his 20 years living in the US that he has felt targeted. He said 30 percent to 40 percent of those who live in the new subdivision, at Highway 141 and Clayton Road, are immigrants, with a large Indian and Chinese population. Avirneni said his wife was so upset, she talked about buying a gun “and we’re not gun people.” He said no other residents of the neighborhood had reported any vandalism although the police did tell him that items had been taken from some unlocked vehicles.
P
the money from that box will go to Salvation Army and other half to Pinglewarha in Amritsar, another Charity that takes care of less fortunate people in India. Donations can also be sent to SRS 1280 Winnetka St, Palatine, IL. 60067. During her speech at Gurdwara, Major Nancy said, “She is aware of the issue of Sikh identity. After she came in contact with Sikhs and had chance to learn about Sikh Religion.
She is very impressed with the passion of Sikhs to do seva (service). She does and will do her best to tell others about ‘who Sikhs are to calm their fear of mistaken identity.” She was presented a plaque on behalf of the Sikh community. This year, the Thanksgiving Day falls on November 24 and Sikhs will gather at 9 at Harbor Light Center 1515 West Monroe St, Chicago, Illinois 60607

The 24th Bal Vihar Diwali celebrations began amid the chanting of Vedic invocations and hymns by the temple priests, in the mandir, where a large number of children were seated in rows. Students and faculty alike were led through the hour-long puja and everyone participated with great enthusiasm. The priests explained a few facets and the significance and spirit of the puja. While the puja was in full swing, a group of Bal Vihar parent volunteers packed boxed dinners for all attendees, while another group prepared for the firecracker distribution to students when Diwali puja was to finish. In order to ensure safety of all present, the area between the Gandhi Center and the Hindu Temple was cordoned off, in preparation for the fireworks display. Upon completion of Diwali puja, the

BY A STAFF WRITER OUSTON, TX -- Shreya Gulamali was last week trying to go into a voting booth with her mother, whose first language is Gujarati, and help her interpret the ballot when the poll worker in Fort Bend County denied her from the booth. By law, as part of the federal Voting Rights Act, any voter who requires assistance because of visual impairments, disabilities or literacy skills can be helped in casting a ballot by the person of their choice, as long as it is not their employer or a union leader. Gulamali’s mother, Chetna Shukla, was attempting to vote for just the second time since she became a US citizen in 1992. Gulamali said her mother was nervous about voting and when they got to the front of the line, Gulamali told the volunteer she needed to help her mother translate. The volunteer said she would assist Shukla and did not let Gulamali in. “When my mother came out with (the volunteer), I asked, ‘Did she vote for her two people she wanted to?’” Gulamali said. The volunteer replied that Shukla picked the straight Democratic ticket despite Gulamali’s mother never having selected any party. It wasn’t until after that Gulamali learned she was able to assist. “I regret not putting my foot down about helping my mother, but I had assumed the poll worker would pick whoever my mom wanted to vote for,” says Gulamali. Fort Bend County elections administrator John Oldham said the poll worker has volunteered for a long time with no previous complaints, although adding he would investigate the incident.

Indian entrepreneur in investment fraud BY A STAFF WRITER I L M I N G TO N , D E Ophthalmologist and entrepreneur Sreedhar Potarazu was arrested recently and charged with using his company to orchestrate a $30-million investment fraud scheme. Potarazu, of Potomac, Maryland, who has emerged as a major political donor of late, was arrested last month. The scheme, however, does not directly link back to his political donations. Federal prosecutors in Alexandria say Potarazu convinced people to invest millions in his former company, VitalSpring Technologies, by hiding his tax liabilities and lying about the company’s finances. An FBI affidavit explained that Potarazu, now the president and chief

executive at software company Enziime, raised $30.5 million from more than 160 investors between 2011 and 2015, with one shareholder investing about $16 million, including a $344,000 payment as recently as August. VitalSpring, which, according to Potarazu’s LinkedIn page, he owned from 2000 until July 2015, provided technology to companies as a means to help them analyze and control their healthcare costs. However, the affidavit noted that the company failed to pay $6 million in employment taxes from 2007 to 2015, and Potarazu never informed investors of the liability. If convicted of the wire fraud charges, Potarazu could spend a maximum of 20 years behind bars.

Landlord may get 3 yrs for insurance fraud
Jamat Manzoor
BY A STAFF WRITER OWER CITY, PA -- A Dauphin County prosecutor has said that he will seek a state prison sentence for a man freshly convicted of arson and insurance fraud for setting a blaze that injured a firefighter and destroyed a vacant home. The jury handed down its guilty verdict against Jamat Manzoor, 46, of Tower City, at the end of a four-day trial. The case centered on an April 2014 fire at a rental property Manzoor owned in the 3500 block of Elmerton Avenue. Firefighter Matthew Hartman suffered burns to his shoulder and one hand battling the fire. First Assistant District Attorney Fran Chardo said a house key was among the key evidence that led to Manzoor’s conviction. He said Manzoor’s key to the property was found in the wreckage and gasoline was discovered on Manzoor’s pants. Investigators determined that gasoline had been sloshed around the house to start the fire. Their theory, Chardo said, was that the blaze spread much more quickly than Manzoor anticipated and he had to flee the burning building without retrieving his key. Sentencing guidelines call for a state prison sentence of 22 to 36 months on Manzoor’s convictions, Chardo said. The only upside for Manzoor is that he could be facing an even stiffer penalty. Chardo said the fire occurred just months after a new state aggravated arson law, which increased the penalties for such crimes, took effect. Manzoor had to be prosecuted under the earlier, less stringent statute, he said. After Manzoor’s conviction, Judge Scott A. Evans increased his bail to $500,000 pending his sentencing in January.

Dilip Chauhan Day in New York BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- November 12 has become a historical day for the Indian-American community as one of their own was honored on two big platforms. It’s a day of double honor for Dilip Chauhan, an IndianAmerican, based in Long Island, New York, and a day of pride for the entire South Asian community. On November 12, a Sunday, the US Congress dedicated the day as the ‘Dilip Chauhan Day’ from the 6th Congressional District in New York. The decision was announced by Congresswoman Grace Meng from Sixth District. Meng is the first Asian woman to become a congresswoman in New York. On the same day, the Long Island Gujarati Cultural Society (LIGCS) invited and honored Dilip Chauhan as a ‘Guest of Honor’ at their Annual Gala to celebrate Diwali at Gujarati Samaj in New York. Chauhan graced the occasion with his

presence and was honored by the society. The event was attended by about six hundred people from LIGCS. Chauhan is a well-respected advocate and
leader within the South Asian Community in New York City and Long Island. He is a first South Asian American to be recognized as Political Rising Star “40 under 40”
Trump’s 10-point immigration plan BY A STAFF WRITER A S H I N G TO N , D C - A D o n a l d Tr u m p administration will execute a 10-point plan to “restore the integrity” of the US immigration system, including building a wall along the border with Mexico, suspension of visas from certain countries and reforming the legal immigration system, the president-elect’s transition team said November 11. The new administration under Donald Trump will focus on radical ideologies, nuclear weapons and cyber-attacks as three areas of threat in the national defense and security domain, the transition team said. The team listed what it called the 10-point plan for immigration reform though not much details of such a policy framework were immediately available. It broadly indicates the policies articulated by Trump during his election campaigning. As per the Trump Transition, the list includes to build a wall on the southern border, end catch-and-release, zero tolerance for criminal aliens, block funding for sanctuary cities, and cancel unconstitutional executive orders and enforce all immigration laws. It also includes suspending the issuance of visas to any place where adequate screening cannot occur. This policy appears to have evolved from Trump’s election time statements related to banning entry of Muslims from entering the country. The policy, among other things, also calls to ensure that other countries take their people back when the U.S. deports them. Interestingly, this year India has taken back at least three charter planes full of people who came to the U.S. illegally or were asked to be deported. Among other policies include completing the biometric entry-exit visa tracking system and turning off the jobs and benefits magnet. The Trump Transition has also talked about reforming the legal immigration system, which among other things includes the much sought after H-1B visas. “Reform legal immigration to serve the best interests of America and its workers,” it said, without giving any further details. While there is no mention of H-1B visas, a position paper issued by the Trump
BY A STAFF WRITER ACRAMENTO, CA -- A 17-year-old Indian American teenager in Sacramento, Calif., was fatally shot on November 8 on his way home from work. Gurnoor Singh Nahal, a senior slated to graduate in the spring of 2017 from Inderkum High School, was shot in the garage of his home in the 5700 block of Kandinsky Way at about 10:40 pm. Singh drove home from his father’s retail store at around 10:30 pm and about 10 minutes later, the Sacramento police were responding to a report of a shooting at the Nahal house It was Nahal’s grandmother who found him lying in the garage. She said the boy cried for help, but it was too late “She heard it and it was very loud and I think when she heard that, she came out and then she saw him,” Nahal’s uncle Tejinderjit Singh said Responding officers found the teen in the garage suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
W
Campaign during the primaries was critical of this system and had called for increasing the minimum wage of H-1B visa holders to $100,000. This was described as a deal killer by immigration experts and Indian companies. “We graduate two times more Americans with STEM degrees each year than find STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) jobs, yet as much as twothirds of entry-level hiring for IT jobs is accomplished through the H-1B program,” said the position paper. More than half of H-1B visas are issued for the program’s lowest allowable wage level, and more than 80 percent for its bottom two, the position paper had rued. “Raising the prevailing wage paid to H-1Bs will force companies to give these coveted entry level jobs to the existing domestic pool of unemployed native and immigrant workers in the U.S., instead of flying in cheaper workers from overseas,” it said. This will improve the number of black, Hispanic and female workers in Silicon Valley who have been passed over in favor of the H-1B program, the Trump campaign said then. However, the Cato Institute in a policy paper Nov. 10 said that Trump’s H-1B visa policy proposal will reduce the number of legal skilled temporary migrant workers. Just over 124,000 H-1Bs were approved in 2014 for initial employment in the U.S., with 85,000 of them for employment in firms and the rest in non-profit research institutions. These workers have an average salary of $75,000 so they do not compete with low-
skilled America workers, it said. If the minimum salary for H-1B visas was bumped up to $100,000 then the number of H-1Bs hired by private firms would decrease while they’d also shrink for research institutions. The 75th percentile for wage compensation for H-1B workers is $81,000,” wrote Alex Nowrasteh, in his policy paper for the Cato Institute. “Even including all of the petitions for high wage workers that are rejected each year, this reform would significantly shrink the number of H-1B visas issued at an enormous economic cost. The H-1B system is also the feeder to the employment-based green card so any change here could disrupt future flows there even if no other changes are made,” Nowrasteh said. The Cato Institute said the policy would increase the regulatory cost for American firms hiring skilled foreign workers in specialty occupations. “Congress considered this policy for the H-1B visa in 1990 and rejected it because the regulatory costs would be so high,” Nowrasteh said. Trump’s transition team in its brief position paper also listed radical ideologies, nuclear weapons and cyber-attacks as three areas of threat in the national defense and security domain. “Mr. Trump recognizes that we cannot tackle challenges, especially threats to our security, unless we define the problem in a way that American resources and instruments of power can be applied against them,” the Trump Transition said, setting in motion to evolve policies and plan of action so that Trump is ready to take actions immediately after he is sworn in on Jan. 20 next year. “To this end, Mr. Trump recognizes the long-term threat posed to our nation and our allies by radical ideologies that direct and inspire terrorism. A Trump administration will be committed to both immediate and sustainable actions to counter the threats posed by these radical ideologies,” the position paper said. Noting that a Trump Administration also recognizes the uniquely catastrophic threats posed by nuclear weapons and cyber attacks, it said the president-elect will ensure the strategic nuclear triad is modernized to ensure it continues to be an effective deterrent.
Muslim student with hijab is assaulted
Esra Altun
BY A STAFF WRITER AN JOSE, CA -- The day after the presidential election, Esra Altun’s friends offered to walk her to her car inside a San Jose State University parking garage, but the 19-year-old Muslim student said she would be fine by herself. As Altun approached her car that afternoon, a man came up behind her in the third-floor of the garage and pulled her by her head scarf, or hijab, causing it to tighten around her neck and choke her, she said. Altun’s friends always offer to walk her to her car, but she was alone inside the university’s west parking structure at Fourth and East San Salvador streets around 1:20 pm when the man grabbed her by her head scarf, she said. The cloth was tied around her neck so when the assailant pulled her, she began to choke. She reflexively arched her back as he pulled her down, trying to break free and hurting her back in the process, she said. He finally let go, and she fell knee first to the ground. Altun says she was not seriously injured, but was shaken up as she then drove to her 10-year-old sister’s school. The school later issued a statement condemning the attack. Harris said the incident could be labeled a hate crime, but the police apparently don’t have enough evidence to back up the suspicion.
