Trump fires FBI chief Comey

Democrats had blamed Comey for Trump’s victory and their candidate Hillary Clinton’s defeat

Independent Russia probe sought after Comey’s firing

Ex-US terror adviser for Comey’s job? WASHINGTON: A former White House counterterrorism official may replace fired FBI Director James Comey. She was spotted at the White House shortly before Comey was “terminated” six years ahead of the end of his term. Frances Townsend, who served in the George W. Bush administration as a White House homeland security and counterterrorism adviser, posted several photos on her Twitter and Instagram accounts snapped while inside the White House, ABC News reported. “Looking up and down the spectacular staircases of the #EEOB @WhiteHouse #DC,” Townsend tweeted the following day. Townsend met with Donald Trump at Trump Tower last year when she was under consideration for a top administration job. Asked today if she was visiting the White House to discuss the appointment, which would make her the first woman to occupy the FBI director’s office, Townsend told ABC News that she was in the Executive Office Building for an unrelated meeting and would not comment on whether she was being considered.

James Comey, the controversial head of the FBI. ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK

I

n a move laden with ironies, US President Donald Trump suddenly dismissed James Comey, the controversial head of the FBI, who had earned the wrath of the Democratic Party for his interference in last year’s elections but was in the middle of an investigation into whether Trump’s campaign had links to Russia. Democrats, who had blamed Comey for Trump’s victory and their candidate Hillary Clinton’s defeat, reacted swiftly to the firing of the powerful domestic intelligence chief by calling for an independent investigator to take over the probe into Trump’s campaign.

BRIEFS

White House was alerted about Flynn WASHINGTON: Former US acting Attorney General Sally Yates said that she had alerted the White House earlier this year that former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn could be “essentially blackmailed by the Russians”, the media reported. “We believed that General Flynn was compromised with respect to the Russians,” CNN quoted Yates addressing a Senate judiciary panel in a high-profile hearing on Russian

meddling into the 2016 Presidential election. Yates told the panel that she had a meeting with White House Counsel Donald McGahn on January 26 to tell him that she had information that statements by Vice President Mike Pence, based on his conversations with Flynn, were false. She was joined in the meeting by a senior career official in the Justice Department.

Trump okays plan to arm Syrian Kurds WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has approved a plan to arm Syrian Kurds, a key force in the fight against the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group, the Pentagon said. “The president authorized the Department of Defense to equip Kurdish elements of the Syrian Democratic Forces as necessary to ensure a clear victory over ISIS in Raqqa, Syria,” Xinhua quoted Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White as saying.

The US-led coalition against the IS is backing Kurdish forces as the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which comprises of mostly the People’s Protection Units (YPG) Kurds along with Arabs and Assyrians, have already got on with siege of Raqqa. “The SDF, partnered with enabling support from US and coalition forces, are the only force on the ground that can successfully seize Raqqa in the near future,” she added.

Trump wrote in the dismissal letter to Comey that he was firing him on the advice of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein because of his handling of the bungled Clinton investigation. The dismissal was a continuation of the election mess affecting both parties in which Comey was embroiled. His letter to Congress on October 28, about investigations into Democratic Party candidate Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server for official work as Secretary of State, started the sordid controversy. Clinton and the Democrats say Comey’s disclosure of the investigation - that ultimately came to

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trumps decision to fire FBI Director James B. Comey revived calls by Democratic lawmakers for an independent investigation of Russian meddling in US elections, with many calling for the appointment of a special prosecutor. “We are in a full-fledged constitutional crisis,” Senator Brian Schatz tweeted. “This is Nixonian,” added Senator Robert Casey. Aides described Democratic senators as “shaken and alarmed” by the surprise announcement and the news of Comey’s ouster sparked several

naught — 11 days before the election cost her the presidency as it made some voters suspicious of her. Comey himself admitted at a Senate hearing last week that it made him “mildly nauseous” to think that he had affected the November 8 election. Then the mercurial Trump praised Comey, an appointee of former President Barack Obama, over the action, saying it took “guts.” But in a political twist, with Comey launching an investigation into his own campaign, Trump

conversations among Democratic senators about how they should respond, the Washington Post reported. Republican Senator John McCain of Arizona called for the creation of a special congressional committee on Russia, while Republican Representative Justin Amash of Michigan said he and his staff were “reviewing legislation to establish an independent commission on Russia”. “James Comey is a man of honor and integrity, and he has led the FBI well in extraordinary circumstances,” McCain said.

turned around and made the Clinton investigation as the official reason for the firing. Trump cited Rosenstein’s letter to him, in which he wrote, “I cannot defend the Director’s handling of the conclusion of the investigation of Secretary Clinton’s emails, and I do not understand his refusal to accept the nearly universal judgment that he was mistaken.” But Democrats were not gloating at the turn of events -- had she been elected Clinton would have herself fired Comey.

Trump for improving relations with Russia IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump has emphasized his desire to build a better relationship between the US and Russia, the White House said. Meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Washington, DC, Trump raised the possibility of broader cooperation on resolving conflicts in the Middle East and elsewhere, Xinhua quoted the White House as saying this week. The meeting came amid tensions between the US and Russia as the two countries hold differences on a slew of issues, including the Syrian conflict, the Ukrainian crisis and the expansion of NATO. Trump, who has expressed hopes of repairing relations with Moscow, said last month that the US was “not getting along with Russia at all” and the relations between the two countries “may be at an all-time low.” At Wednesday’s meeting, Trump emphasized the need to work

together to end the conflict in Syria, underscoring the need for Russia to “rein in the Assad regime, Iran, and Iranian proxies.” After Trump ordered missile strikes on a Syria airbase last month in response to Syrian government’s alleged use of chemical weapons, the Russian government condemned the military action, calling Washington’s move “aggression against a sovereign state in violation of international law.”

On Ukraine, Trump expressed his Administration’s commitment to remain engaged in resolving the conflict and stressed Russia’s responsibility to fully implement the Minsk agreements. The US, along with some European allies, has imposed several rounds of economic sanctions on Russia in response to what they called the annexation of Crimea and destabilizing activities in eastern Ukraine.

India moves ICJ for Jadhav

On Tuesday, the ICJ at the Hague in the Netherlands suspended the death sentence on Kulbhushan Jadhav by the Pakistani military court IANS, NEW DELHI/ISLAMABAD

I

ndia on Wednesday said it moved the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the case of Kulbhushan Jadhav, the Indian national sentenced to death by a Pakistani military court on espionage charges, to save his life after Pakistan denied consular access to it despite 16 requests which was in contravention of international law. However, Islamabad maintained that the Indian move was an attempt to divert attention from “state-sponsored terrorism in Pakistan” and that it was analysing the ICJ’s authority in the matter. “It is a very carefully considered decision. It is a decision taken by the government in the interest of an Indian citizen who is in illegal detention and is facing threat to

his life,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Gopal Baglay said here. “This a course of action we have chosen after careful delibera-

tion and careful consideration in the interest of saving the life and ensuring justice for a person of India,” he said.

Jadhav, a former Indian Navy officer, was allegedly arrested in Balochistan in March 2016. Pakistan said Jadhav worked for the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). A military court sentenced him to death on April 10 on charges of espionage and waging war against Islamabad. On Tuesday, the ICJ at the Hague in the Netherlands suspended the death sentence on Jadhav by the Pakistani military court. Reacting to the stay order, Foreign Affairs Advisor to the Pakistan Prime Minister Sartaj Aziz said in Islamabad: “We are analysing the Indian petition and the International Court of Justice’s authority (on the case).” Lawyer Harish Salve, who is representing India at the ICJ, said on Wednesday that the court is likely to hear India’s plea on Monday.

ilitants abducted and murdered a 22-year-old Kashmiri Army officer from a family wedding in Jammu and Kashmir’s troubled Shopian district, triggering outrage. And on Wednesday, stone pelters clashed with security forces when his body was laid to rest. Ummer Fayaz was on leave and visiting his native place in Kulgam

to attend the marriage of his maternal uncle’s daughter in Batapura village when militants kidnapped the unarmed officer around 10 p.m. on Tuesday. His bullet-riddled body was found on Wednesday morning at Harmen in Shopian district. Justice Karnan to go to jail NEW DELHI: In a first in India’s judicial history, the Supreme Court on Tuesday sentenced a sitting high court — Justice C.S. Karnan of the Calcutta High Court — to six months in jail for contempt following a series of actions by the Dalit judge topped by his order of sentencing Chief Justice of India and seven other apex court judges to five years rigorous imprisonment. “We are of the unanimous view that Justice C.S. Karnan is guilty of contempt of court and interfered with judicial process of grievous nature,” a seven-judge bench headed by Chief Justice J.S. Khehar said while holding him guilty of contempt for his utterances against the Chief Justice of India and other judges of the apex court. “We sentence him to imprisonment for six months. SC: Is triple talaq fundamental to Islam? NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday heard a batch of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of “triple talaq” and to know whether it was fundamental to Islam. “We are going to decide the validity of triple talaq,” said Chief Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar, heading a Constitution bench. He asked the parties concerned to focus on whether triple talaq was fundamental to Islamic religion. The Chief Justice said that petitioners and respondents would address the court on whether triple talaq was an enforceable fundamental right. The bench sought suggestions on the broad parameters of the directions the court may issue while deciding the validity of triple talaq. Other judges on the Constitution bench are Justice Kurian Joseph, Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit and Justice S. Abdul Nazeer.

On Wednesday, about two dozen demonstrators pelted stones in an attempt to disrupt the funeral procession of the officer when his body was being laid to rest in his ancestral graveyard with full military honors, police said. The protesters were chased away by police. Defense Minister Arun Jaitley called it a dastardly act of cowardice by terrorists. “We share the grief of the family and stand in solidarity. (The officer) will continue to inspire the youth from the Kashmir Valley,” he said. Despite seemingly unending militancy in Jammu and Kashmir, a large number of young Muslims from the Valley continue to join the Indian Army and paramilitary forces.

S shall be extended forthwith,” it observed bringing to an end a long showdown between Karnan and judges of the Madras High Court when he was part of it and later with the apex court judges. However, the Supreme Court was moved on Thursday seeking suspension of the six-month sentence awarded to him for contempt of court, which the apex court has agreed to consider.

acked Water Minister Kapil Mishra’s “satyagraha” fast to protest corruption in the AAP was on Wednesday marked by high drama as he was slapped by a young man. More drama erupted over the assailant’s affiliation with both AAP and BJP terming him an activist of the rival party. The man identified himself as an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) worker but the party firmly denied any links with him. As police revealed name of the man as Ankit Bhardwaj, both AAP and Bharatiya Janata Party clashed over his political affiliation. The Congress on Tuesday slammed AAP for not responding to the corruption allegations during the special session of Delhi assembly. The Congress also accused the party of diverting attention from the real issues by holding a demonstration on EVM tampering in the assembly.

NRIs can help India thrive

Because of their accomplishments in the US and understanding of India, Indian Americans are uniquely positioned to step forward and provide assistance to address pressing issues in their mother country FRANK F. ISLAM, WASHINGTON

I

n 2010, during his first visit to India, President Barack Obama proclaimed: “I believe that India and America are indispensable partners in meeting the challenges of their times.” Indian Americans can surely play a key role in strengthening that partnership and helping India achieve its full potential. Because of their accomplishments in the United States and understanding of India, Indian Americans are uniquely positioned to step forward and provide assistance to address pressing issues in their mother country. Consider these remarkable statistics reported by Indiaspora, a nonprofit organization based in San Francisco with a mission of transforming the success of IndianAmericans into meaningful impact worldwide : Highest household income of any ethnic group in the US -- $100,000 versus a national average of $51,000, 32 per cent have Bachelor’s degree versus 18 per cent for the US overall and 38 per cent have advanced degrees versus 10 per cent for the US overall. These numbers reveal the potential that Indian-Americans have to help India achieve its full potential. They can make a substantial contribution in any number of areas.

Indian Americans align their investments of time, talent and money in the areas as discussed during the India-US Strategic and Commercial Dialogue established by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Obama.

To maximize their involvement, it is recommended that Indian Americans align their investments of time, talent and money in the areas discussed as part of the IndiaUS Strategic and Commercial Dialogue. The Dialogue was established by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Obama during the latter’s visit in 2015 as the chief guest at the Republic Day parade.

Simultaneously, a business roundtable comprising Modi, Obama, senior government officials and prominent CEOs from both countries was convened. I had the privilege to participate in that roundtable as one of the US representatives. The roundtable provided initial inputs to the Dialogue, the first of which was held in September 2015 and the second in 2016. The Dialogue develops position

statements in a wide range of policy areas. Some of the promising areas are: Innovation and Entrepreneurship: through the Start-up India initiative to further collaboration between Indian and US start-ups, venture capitalists and other stakeholders. Commerce, Economy and Growth: One focal point is helping small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to

Sonia’s unifying role unlikely to succeed The objective is to field an opposition candidate for the presidential election where the BJP-led NDA is short of a majority in the 1.1 million strong electoral college AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

A

s in 2004, Sonia Gandhi is again trying to stitch together an alliance against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The objective is to field an opposition candidate for the presidential poll where the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is short of a majority in the 1.1 million strong electoral college — although by no more than two per cent of the votes. However, if the opposition fields a widely acceptable candidate and is able to lure a few of the BJP’s allies like the generally disgruntled Shiv Sena to its side, then the “sec-

ular” front will be able to score a morale-boosting victory. It may be recalled that the Shiv Sena had voted against the BJP in the last two presidential elections when it supported the Congress’s Marathi nominee Pratibha Patil in 2007 against the saffron stalwart Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, and the Congress’ Pranab Mukherjee in 2012 against the former Lok Sabha Speaker P.A. Sangma. Notwithstanding the Congress president’s initiative in reaching out to virtually everyone in the non-BJP camp, it will be unrealistic, however, to expect the kind of success which she had as a unifier in 2004 because there are signifi-

cant differences between then and now. In 2004, she was able to bring over to her side several of the BJP’s allies like Ram Vilas Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party and Farooq Abdullah’s National Conference because Atal Behari Vaj-

payee’s 24-party alliance was unravelling in the aftermath of the 2002 Gujarat riots. Indeed, Vajpayee later said that he would not have lost but for the riots. The scene is different this time. For one, unlike Vajpayee at the end of

spur growth and create jobs across India. A priority here is to create a platform for sharing best practices and technology with SMEs and helping them access financing to participate in global supply chains. Smart Cities Cooperation: India has launched an ambitious smart cities initiative, which aims to develop more than a hundred smart cities. In the most recent dialogue, emphasis was placed on continuing reverse trade missions to look at smart solutions for these respective cities. Health: One of the heathcare priorities in this broad category is the control of infectious diseases and the initiation of programs on vaccines for TB, dengue, and respiratory syncytial virus through public-private partnerships. Education: An education priority is “to increase cooperation in all higher education areas, including vocational training, technical and professional education and philanthropy in higher education.” Because of the difference that education can make, higher education is one of my personal priorities for philanthropic investment. Indian Americans have the character, capacity and competence to be leaders in addressing the pivotal areas identified and in many other areas as well. In fact, many are already doing so. his reign, Narendra Modi is currently much more securely placed. For another, the Congress is now weaker than ever before. In 2004, it was poised to climb higher which it did five years later when it won more than 200 Lok Sabha seats while the BJP was described as a “kati patang” by a former minister in Vajpayee’s cabinet, Arun Shourie. Now, the sarcasm of being a floating kite applies to the Congress as its Lok Sabha tally has fallen to its lowest ever point while the BJP is soaring high. Moreover, the fact that Sonia is to play a proactive role despite her indifferent health shows that Rahul Gandhi, who has long been expected to replace her as the party president, has failed to fulfil the Congress’s expectations of becoming an acclaimed leader with ideas and energy. Instead, the crown prince remains something of a part-timer in politics. Sonia, too, has lost some of the lustre which she had a decade ago because her missteps during the Congress’s stint in power such as stalling the economic reforms in favor of populism are widely believed to have led the party to its doom.

Neil appointed to key energy post Indian American Neil Chatterjee will play a key role in Trump’s programme to reshape energy policy IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump has appointed Neil Chatterjee to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, which oversees electricity, natural gas and oil at the national level. Chatterjee will play a key role in Trump’s programme to reshape energy policy, most of which is opposed by environmentalists and Democrats, if his appointment is confirmed by the Senate. He is the second Indian American to be appointed by Trump to a major regulatory position with a controversial mission. The other is Ajit Pai, the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, who is spear-

Indian-origin shopkeeper in UK fights off robber LONDON: A brave Indian-origin shopkeeper and his teenage son in the UK fought off an knifewielding robber using a bottle of vodka and a chair. Dramatic CCTV footage shared by shopkeeper Anil Velji with police showed a man lunging towards him wielding a knife in a convenience store in Oldham, Greater Manchester, only for Velji to fight back. The 40-year-old attempted to fend off his attacker with the spirit bottle before falling to the ground, the Daily Mail reported. He kicked the robber from the floor as he continued to come towards him, and managed to pick up a chair behind the shop counter and fight back. Quickly the man retreated and fled the scene, with Velji giving chase with a piece of wood. The incident happened on April 23 at the Premier Convenience on Manchester Street. Velji said that the man had entered the store a few minutes earlier and had been “eyeing up” the spirits. He said: “I asked him what he was interested in, he told me he didn’t have enough money for the expensive stuff and kept looking.” “I kept serving customers as he did, he was waiting for them to leave and the shop to be empty. I picked up a bottle of vodka for him and turned around to put it in the till, I heard a noise behind me and the man had pulled out a knife and was coming at me behind the counter.” —IANS

Oz visa changes won’t affect Indians IANS, NEW DELHI

A

fter Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced last month that he will be abolishing the existing 457 Visa program, currently used by temporary foreign workers to gain employment, the country’s High Commissioner to India Harinder Sidhu said that she did not expect the move to affect Indians much. Speaking at a media interaction organized by the Indian Women’s Press Corps here, Sidhu said the move to abolish the 457 Visa programme was aimed to ensure that people who come to Australia should be properly qualified. The 457 Visa program is used

Harinder Sidhu

mainly to hire foreign workers in the restaurant, IT and medical industries and the majority of such visa holders came from India, Britain and China. Turnbull’s statement, coming

days after he visited New Delhi, caused a lot of consternation in India. According to government statistics, 95,758 people were living in Australia under 457 Visa programme last year, with the highest proportion coming from India (24.6 per cent), followed by Britain (19.5 per cent) and China (5.8 per cent). Sidhu said that most of the Indian 457 Visa holders work in the IT sector and, given the “great shortage” of IT workers in her country, “we expect Indians to continue to qualify” for Australian visas. “This (457 Visa) is just a temporary visa that allowed people to come and work for a week to four years,” she said.

restrict use of coal for electricity generation. A lawyer by training, he started as an intern with the House Works and Means Committee. Between his stints on Congressional staff, he has been a lobbyist for the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association. Chatterjee, 40, grew up in Lexington, Kentucky, where his parents worked in cancer research. He is married with two sons and a daughter. Among issues he will likely deal with are Trump’s plans to allow the construction of the Keystone pipeline to carry crude oil from Canada to Texas in the US, which was stopped by former President Barack Obama, and several gas pipeline projects.

Congress woos NRIs with membership THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a first-of-its-kind move, the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee offered the party membership to the state’s diaspora. The move came after the party’s state Political Affairs Committee gave the nod to the move. “It is for the first time that we are offering party membership to the diaspora. All those interested to enrol as party members should log on to the KPCC website,” state Congress President M.M. Hassan said. The opposition Congress also discussed the coming party organizational polls and a membership drive that ends on May 15. A final list of party members will be published on May 31.

US firm targets Indians with EB5 - the ‘Golden Visa’ AROONIM BHUYAN, NEW DELHI

A

s confusion looms over the future of the H1-B visa programme, an investmentfacilitating firm is targeting rich Indians with the EB5 visa, popularly known as the “Golden Visa”, that promises a faster route to US citizenship. The US Immigration Fund (USIF), which launched its Indian operations this year, is confident that affluent Indians who invest half a million dollars or more in a Targeted Employment Area (TEA) — creating 10 or more jobs — under the EB5 visa programme, will get US citizenship in a shorter time compared to the H1-B visa programme. US President Donald Trump has called for stricter norms for

issuance of H1-B visas, largely availed of by Indian IT firms. A private member’s bill was also introduced earlier this year in the US Congress by Democrat Zoe Lofgren which seeks to increase the minimum salary of an H1-B visa holder to a whopping $130,000

from the current minimum of $60,000. “With the H1-B environment becoming tougher and tougher, demand for EB5 has gone up,” Andrew Graves, USIF’s Director of Business Development in India, told IANS. “Indians are becoming more

aware of the EB5 visa programme,” he said. Introduced by the US Congress in 1990, the EB5 visa programme allows an individual to invest $500,000 in either of two TEAs — a high unemployment area in a US metropolis or a rural area outside of a metro — or $1 million in a non-TEA area that can create 10 or more jobs. Earlier this month, the US Congress extended the programme, which has seen much controversy over the merits of its applicants, till September 30 this year. Graves explained that once an application is filed for an EB5 visa programme, the applicant has to fill in a I526 form under a US attorney after which he or she gets a temporary US Green Card for 16 months.

Congress vows to keep BJP out in Karnataka

Congress will bounce back: Antony

Newly-appointed state in-charge K.C. Venugopal. IANS, BENGALURU

K

arnataka’s ruling Congress has vowed to keep the BJP out of power in the state by winning the 2018 assembly elections. “Our objective is to not allow the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) come to power in Karnataka at any cost. We will win the next assembly elections and form our government again,” claimed party’s newly-appointed state in-charge K.C. Venugopal. The ruling party returned for

power in the southern state on its own in the May 2013 assembly elections, a decade after losing power 2004. Congress President Sonia Gandhi on April 29 appointed Venugopal, the party’s general secretary, as incharge of the party’s affairs in the state, replacing Digvijaya Singh. The 54-year-old Venugopal, a Lok Sabha member from Kerala’s Alappuzha, is on a three-day visit to the city to meet the party’s state unit leaders, cadres and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. “We have taken the ensuing

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Congress leader A.K. Antony on Sunday said his party will bounce back strongly after the defeats in the February-March assembly elections in five states. “Setbacks are only a temporary phenomenon as the Congress will bounce back very strongly. The need of the hour is to strengthen the Congress at the grass-roots level,” Antony said at a party function here. “What one sees in Kerala are only ‘leaders’, while the party strength at the lower levels is weak. That has to change.” He also said the Left government in Kerala, which will complete a year this month, had been an

assembly elections as a challenge. We should strive hard to retain power in the state by strengthening the party from grassroots,” Venugopal told reporters at the party office. Exhorting state leaders and cadres to forget differences and work together to win the next assembly elections, he said as the Siddaramaiah government was doing a good job, its welfare schemes should be popularized across the state. “The party’s lead-

“abject failure on all fronts”. “Every sector in the state has gone haywire and gone down badly,” the former Kerala Chief Minister said. The Congress leader said the time was not far when Kerala’s ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist will itself hail Congress President Sonia Gandhi. “Those in West Bengal, Tripura and other places have already started asking Sonia to come forward (to lead the opposition). If not today, definitely tomorrow the CPI-M in Kerala too will say the same thing.” He said the first step in opposition unity will surface during the July polls to elect the President.

ers and cadres should take the welfare schemes to the people’s doorsteps and not repeat the same mistake we made in Kerala and due to which we lost in the May 2016 assembly elections,” he said. On the appointment of the party’s state unit’s new president in place of G. Parameshwara, Venugopal said it would be decided by the high command after his discussions with the leaders and cadres over the next two days here.

PANAJI: Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar will contest from the Panaji legislative assembly seat for the upcoming bypoll, state BJP president Vinay Tendulkar said this week. Parrikar, a former Defense Minister and currently a member of the Rajya Sabha was rushed back to state politics in March. He leads the Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition government in Goa, but is not an elected member of the 40-member state legislative assembly. “The party has decided that Parrikarji should contest from Panaji. Accordingly sitting Panaji MLA Sidharth Kunkolienkar has voluntarily decided to step down,” Tendulkar told reporters. Earlier, there was speculation that the four-time Chief Minister could contest from the Curchorem assembly seat in South Goa, which elected BJP legislator Nilesh Cabral in the February 4 elections. Cabral, along with three other MLAs, including Kunkolienkar, a Parrikar protege, had expressed willingness to resign as legislators to facilitate Parrikar’s entry into the state assembly. Parrikar has been elected to the Panaji state assembly seat without a break since 1994.

mid a public outcry over the State Bank of India (SBI) announcement to levy charges on ATM cash withdrawals from June, Kerala Finance Minister Thomas Issac has accused the bank of bringing down its losses with the move. Addressing reporters here on May 11 in the Kerala Assembly, Issac said the only reason he can see for this "mad" new rule is that the SBI is faced with mounting non-performing assets that have touched Rs 1.67 lakh crore. "This is the height of madness and irresponsibility. It would be interesting to find out the list of NPAs of the SBI.. One wouldn't be surprised if the majority are found to be corporates. Just take a look at their profits, it has dramatically come down. The charges have been levied to bring down their losses. This is something that even private

tactfully because Kerala's own bank (State Bank of Travancore) has been merged with the SBI. The people who banked with SBT have now become SBI customers and now they are at the receiving end," said a retired teacher, after withdrawing money from the ATM. Another angry SBI customer from Kottayam said barring the lone Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator in the 141-member Kerala Assembly, all others had strongly opposed the merger and passed a resolution to this effect. "This was bound to happen and these are measures to pick the pockets poor people. We wish to know what the state BJP leaders have to say on this. There should be mass protest in Kerala against the SBI," said the angry SBI account holder. Of the 880 SBT branches in Kerala, more than 400 were closed after the merger. At present there are over 800 SBI branches in the state.

willing to visit Pyongyang under the right circumstances. “I will quickly move to solve the crisis in national security,” Moon told the national assembly in Seoul after he was sworn in as successor to Park Geun-hye, who is awaiting trial on corruption and other charges after being impeached late last year. Moon, who won Tuesday’s election by a landslide, added: “I am willing to go anywhere for the peace of the Korean peninsula if needed. I will fly immediately to Washington, I will go to Beijing and I will go to Tokyo. If the conditions are right, I will go to Pyongyang.” Moon added that he would have “serious negotiations” with the US and China over the controversial deployment of anti-missile system Thaad.

In his first key appointments, President Moon named Lee Nakyon, the current governor of South Jeolla Province, to the post of Prime Minister. If confirmed by Parliament, he will replace outgoing Hwang Kyo-ah. Suh Hoon, who played a key role in preparing the two interKorea summits in the 2000s, was named to head the National Intelligence Service. Moon also appointed former

student activist and close aide Im Jong-seok as Chief of Staff. Joo Young-hoon, a former official at the presidential security service, was named to head the organization. The President also said he would relocate the presidential office to Gwanghwamun, central Seoul, as soon as preparations are made, as his first measure to break away from an imperious and uncommunicative presidency.

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) has decided to file a petition in the court against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to seek an investigation into allegations of receiving money from slain Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden during the 1990s, the media reported. PTI spokesman and lawyer Fawad Chaudhry told Dawn online on Monday that his party had completed the process of internal discussions and decided after reviewing all legal aspects of the case to file the petition against Sharif and his party Pakistan Muslim LeagueNawaz (PML-N) for “conspiring against democracy in the country after receiving money from foreign forces”. Last week, the PTI had announced that it had decided to file a petition. Chaudhry said the time had come that the nation should be told about the secret links of Sharif with foreign forces. —IANS

France gets youngest President in Macron IANS, PARIS

P

ro-EU Emmanuel Macron on Sunday became France’s youngest President with a landslide victory over far-right rival Marine Le Pen, a result hailed by European Union leaders. Wild celebrations broke out in Paris and across France as Macron, 39, bagged an overwhelming 66.06 per cent or 20.7 per cent of all votes in a closely and bitterly fought battle. In no time, the euro hit a sixmonth high against the dollar while

Asian shares gained and US stocks briefly reached record levels. Thousands of jubilant Macron supporters waving blue, white and red tricolor flags danced and cheered outside the iconic Paris Louvre museum. A civil servant who became a millionaire investment banker and then a government minister, Macron founded the ‘En Marche!’ movement and went on to become the President despite not having a constituency of his own and without the backing of any major party.

He is France’s youngest leader after Napolean (1769-1821). Anti-EU Le Pen, 48, got about 10.6 million votes in the Presidential election’s crucial runoff (33.94 per cent). This was almost double of what her more rabid father Jean-

Marie won in 2002, the last time a far-right candidate made it to the runoff. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday telephoned Macron and congratulated him on his victory.

neo-Nazism, among other threats, unity in the international community was needed, he said.

He highlighted that Russia’s military was prepared to repeal any threat, just as it had during the

Second World War against Nazi Germany, and that no force would ever dominate the Russian people. In front of the more than 10,000 troops that were ready to parade, Putin paid tribute to veterans of the war, known in Russia as the Great Patriotic War. Putin remembered Soviet soldiers’ sacrifice during the war, which left around 26 million dead throughout the Soviet Union, and said the conflict’s lessons forced us to remain alert. Victory Day, celebrated annually, is one of Russia’s most important festivals and is used by the country to flaunt its military might.

A

ctress Shraddha Srinath, best known for her Kannada film U-Turn, will be seen playing a Bharatanatyam dancer in her upcoming yet-untitled Telugu debut film, to be directed by Ravikanth Perepu of Kshanam fame. “It’s the script that got me excited. It’s a two-heroine, coming-ofage romantic comedy where I play a Bharatanatyam dancer. I start shooting from May 9,” Shraddha told IANS. She is not a trained dancer, but Shraddha has had a brief stint with Bharatanatyam. “I was trained for a year when I was 8 years old. Due to my army upbringing, we had to move a lot and I had to discontinue my training. I can’t say I was really trained but I did get some formal training. I will have to brush up the basics

It was a well etched character waiting for me, and I am quite optimistic the audience will love me in the film,” said Raju. She added that she loved the film’s story as it gave immense scope for an artist like her to be true to the character. “Prakash is a person who lets you sink into the character with great amount of freedom and he never made me feel like a debutante,” added Raju, who was born in Tamil Nadu and is now settled in Telangana. She said it was a great learning experience for her and she thoroughly enjoyed working among seasoned actors like Vijay Babu, Vineeth Kumar, Jomol, Saiju Kurup and Aju Verghese.

Rohit Sharma and Mohammed Shami come back to the 15-member India squad for next month’s ICC Champions Trophy

Yuvi hopes for ‘meaningful’ tour

BCCI’s chairman of selectors M.S.K. Prasad had no hesitations in calling the former India skipper (seen left) “the best stumper” in the world. IANS, NEW DELHI

T

he fit-again cricket duo of Rohit Sharma and Mohammed Shami has been recalled to the 15member India squad for next month’s ICC Champions Trophy, as the cricket selectors also reposed their faith on talismanic wicketkeeper-batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s abilities. BCCI’s chairman of selectors M.S.K. Prasad had no hesitations in calling the former India skipper “the best stumper” in the world despite his erratic run with the willow in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). “We all believe that he is still the best wicket-keeper in the world. He is invaluable to the

team in terms of inputs,” Prasad told reporters after BCCI joint secretary Amitabh Choudhary announced the Virat Kohli-led squad here. “He is the best person to guide Virat. In the past 10-plus years that I have seen when he has played for India, he has never had a bad day as far as gloves are concerned. The phenomenal performance he puts in behind the wicket, nobody looks at that,” he added. Besides Rohit and Shami, offspinner Ravichandran Ashwin also made his way back after a brief injury lay-off. While Rohit sustained a thigh injury during the One Day International (ODI) series against New Zealand in October last year Shami’s

DUBAI: Back in the ICC Champions Trophy squad after a gap of 11 years, veteran batsman Yuvraj Singh hopes for a “meaningful contribution” to help India defend its title during the June 1-18 tournament in England. The southpaw made a sensational debut for India in the 2002 event in Kenya and featured in all events until 2006, before missing the 2009 and 2013 events. “I am delighted to be returning to the India side for the 50-over ICC tournament and look forward to making a meaningful contribution as the side aims to defend its title,” Yuvraj was quoted as saying in an International Cricket Council (ICC) statement. “Like any other ICC tournament, it will be a challenging event with each team arriving there believing it can lift the silverware on 18 June at The Oval.”

last appearance in ODIs was in the 2015 World Cup semi-finals. Ashwin, who suffered a sports hernia, was also advised six-to-eight weeks of rehabilitation after a gruelling Test series against Australia. With no surprises in the team, Prasad said it was easy to pick the squad as it has shaped up well in the last four months. “May be, one place here and there. But this is the best side.”

India are clubbed alongside Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka in one of the two groups, which Yuvraj acknowledged as tough but said the side will retain the crown. “We are in a tough group, but at the same time we are a form side following a highly successful domestic season. We will target to carry forward the winning momentum into the ICC Champions Trophy so that we can become the second side after Australia to win back to back titles,” Yuvraj said. Yuvraj further said India have always felt at home while playing in England. “The United Kingdom is an excellent location to host the ICC Champions Trophy. We have always felt at home away from home due to the overwhelming support we always receive there,” he said.

On including Ashwin without testing him in a match situation, Prasad said the Chennai tweaker’s injury was not serious and he merely required some rest. The chief selector also responded in the negative when asked if skipper Kohli or all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja needed some rest from the IPL, considering their respective teams are out of the race to the IPL play-offs.

NEW DELHI: Former India captain Jhulan Goswami has surpassed Australian Cathryn Fitzpatrick to become the leading wicket-taker in Women’s One-Day International (ODI) cricket, taking her haul to 181 wickets from 153 outings. The 34-year-old pacer took three wickets against hosts South Africa during the ongoing Women’s Quadrangular Series to achieve the landmark. With 271 International wickets (Tests, ODIs and T20I), Goswami, who was once the fastest bowler in women’s cricket has been the mainstay of India women bowling unit since her debut in 2002. Goswami is also the all-time leading wicket-taker in women’s cricket. After winning the ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year 2007 she captained India. She was conferred with the Arjuna Award in 2010, and the Padma Shri two years later. Goswami is no mug with the bat as well and averages 25.72 in Tests and has two fifties to her name. In ODIs, the Bengal-born girl has 919 runs to her name.

arpreet Singh fetched the first medal for India on the opening day of the Asian Wrestling Championship on Wednesday when he bagged a bronze in the Greco-Roman 80 kilogram category. Harpreet edged out Na Junjie of China 3-2 in the play-off for the bronze medal. South Korea emerged as the most successful nation on the opening day with a tally of five medals including one gold, three silver and a bronze. Oh Sanghun won the gold medal in the Greco-Roman 66 category for the east Asian nation by defeating Almat Kebispayev of

Kazakhstan in the final. The bout had ended 1-1 after a bitter contest which saw both wrestlers matching each other move for move. Park Daeseung (75 kg), Kim Daeseung (80 kg) and Kim Seungjun (98 kg) got silver while Kim Minseok (130 kg) bagged bronze. Harpreet made an excellent start to the bout and used his superior physical strength to wrest the upper hand early on. The judges made two passivity calls against the Chinese grappler which earned a point for the Indian. But the scores were soon levelled when the judges appointed a passivity point against the local wrestler.

nternational Cricket Council (ICC) Chairman Shashank Manohar has agreed to continue till his tenure ends in June next year, the game’s global governing body confirmed here. Manohar, who had resigned in March citing personal reasons, initially agreed to defer his resignation till the annual conference this June this year when the new ICC constitution consisting of the governance structure and the re-worked finance model will be ratified. The former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief, however decided to continue in his post after persuasion by the Full Members and Associates. “The International Cricket Council (ICC) today confirmed Shashank Manohar will continue to function as the Independent Chairman of ICC until the end of his elected term which is June 2018,” the global cricket body said

in a statement. Since taking over as the independent chairman, the 59-year-old lawyer has been at the forefront of proposed reforms to the revenue sharing model in the ICC, and has managed to end the financial dominance of the “Big Three” (boards of England, Australia and India). The BCCI, who objected to the new structure, lost the vote on ‘governance and constitutional

changes’ by a 2-12 margin while the revenue model was passed 13 votes to one in April. There were also speculations that India could withdraw from the upcoming Champions Trophy to be held in England, only for the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (COA) to intervene and force the Indian board to give an all-clear to named the Indian squad.

chronic pain cycle, in which pain disrupts sleep, which then promotes pain, which further disrupts sleep,” said Clifford Woolf from Boston Children’s Hospital in the US.

For the study, published in the journal Nature Medicine, the researchers measured the effects of acute or chronic sleep loss on sleepiness and sensitivity to both painful and non-painful stimuli. They then tested standard pain medications, like ibuprofen and morphine, as well as wakefulnesspromoting agents like caffeine and modafinil. They also developed a protocol to chronically sleep-deprive mice in a non-stressful manner, by providing them with toys and activities at the time they were supposed to go to sleep, thereby extending the wake period. “This is similar to what most of us do when we stay awake a little bit too much watching late night TV each weekday,” says Alexandre, who works in the lab of Thomas Scammell, MD, at BIDMC.

The study showed that for each 30-minute increase in hand-held screen time, there was a 49 per cent increased risk of expressive speech delay. “Hand-held devices are everywhere these days,” said Catherine Birken, pediatrician at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids)

in Ontario, Canada. “While new pediatric guidelines suggest limiting screen time for babies and toddlers, we believe that the use of smartphones and tablets with young children has become quite common. This is the first study to report an association between hand-held screen time and increased risk of expressive language delay,” Birken added. However, there was no apparent link between hand-held device screen time and other communications delays, such as social interactions, body language or gestures, the researchers said.

Although, I’ve participated in various fashion shows and events, Asian Designer Week is special as it has given me a great opportunity.” Denim has been used as the core in the collection, but in a new ‘Indie-Denim’ avatar. Giving an insight into the collection, Chadha said: “The collection stems out from the concept ‘Beauty Lies Within’ and Ritu was the perfect person to reflect the concept beautifully.

Marijuana compound may ‘Massaging may boost relationship’ help reverse memory loss IANS, LONDON

LONDON: Prolonged low-dose treatment with a marijuana compound may help reverse memory loss and improve cognitive skills, a finding that could pave the way for slowing brain ageing or treating dementia in humans, researchers say. According to the study, the brain ages much faster when mice do not possess any functional receptors for tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC — the chemical responsible for most of marijuana’s psychological effects. “With increasing age, the quantity of

the cannabinoids naturally formed in the brain reduces. When the activity of the cannabinoid system declines, we find rapid ageing in the brain,” said Andreas Zimmer, professor at the University of Bonn in Germany.

In the run up to the headlining act, DJ Sartek and DJ Zaeden set the ball rolling, paving the stage for Norwegian DJ Alan Walker, who has a huge fan following of his own. When Bieber finally hit the

stage — wearing a pair of shorts and a T-shirt — his team of dancers, the excitement in the crowd was at its peak. There were fans dressed in black T-shirts with ‘BELIEBER’ written across them, and those flaunting tees with his photographs and even others with hoardings that read “We love you Bieber” and “Meri jaan” at the venue. Bieber also met a group of underprivileged children on a bus.

It’s racist: Deepika on being called Priyanka NEW DELHI: Actress Deepika Padukone, who has been mistaken for Priyanka Chopra by the foreign media in the US multiple times, says it’s racist and ignorant for people to assume that people with similar skin tones are the same. A video doing the rounds on social media shows a foreign paparazzo constantly referring to Deepika as “Priyanka, Priyanka” while she makes her way out of an airport in the US. Deepika, who made her Hollywood debut with the Vin Diesel starrer xXx: Return of Xander Cage earlier this year, has strong views about facing this ‘identity crisis’ and about how the Indian media needs to deal with it maturely. In an interview to IANS over phone from Mumbai, the actress said: “To me, it’s racist and ignorant. And as a fellow Indian, you (the media) should also be not very happy about. I think just because people have similar skin tones, doesn’t mean they are same people. “As people in a place of power that the media has, instead of creating a tabloid piece out of it, people should be educating them further.” Just back from attending the famed fashion fiesta Met Gala 2017 in New York, Deepika is now looking forward to visit the French Riviera. She will attend the prestigious Cannes Film Festival on May 17-18 as a brand ambassador for cosmetic giant L’Oreal Paris.

“I am very very excited. I am looking forward to the entire experience of being there and taking it all in,” said the actress. “I would happily forget that experience maybe, and start afresh,” quipped Deepika, who doesn’t wish to reveal her two looks for the Cannes red carpet appearance just as yet. Earlier this week, she stepped out in a white Tommy Hilfiger gown for the Met Gala in a look which didn’t find much appreciation by the international foreign police. But Deepika is not bothered — she says being on the red carpet is all about having fun.

NEW DELHI: National Award winning actor Akshay Kumar on Tuesday put a smile on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s face with the title of his next film Toilet: Ek Prem Katha. He tweeted: “Met PM Narendra Modi and got the opportunity to tell him about my upcoming Toilet-Ek Prem Katha. His smile at just the title made my day,” the actor wrote along with a photograph featuring him engrossed in conversation with Modi. It was earlier said that the film was based on Modi’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. But the film’s dialogue writers Siddharth Singh and Garima Wahal told IANS that the movie was conceptualised much before Modi became the PM.

rammy Award winning Canadian singer Justin Bieber performed to a stadium full of his fans, who were excited, emotional and euphoric as the “Baby” singer took the stage in India for the first time. “Hello India,” Bieber said to the crowd of “Beliebers”, who waited for hours altogether in scorching heat on May 10 to watch him perform on a humongous stage enhanced by graphics as well as enlivened with startling fireworks and the rousing response of the audience. “What a beautiful night for me as I am here in this beautiful country for the first timea and you people are fav (favorite),” Bieber said at the D.Y. His fans welcomed him by putting their hands in the air, while some female fans were seen overcome by emotions as he sang his famous songs “Cold water”, “Love yourself ”, “I will show you how”. ctress-producer Priyanka Chopra’s Sikkimese production Pahuna will have its trailer screened at the upcoming edition of the Cannes Film Festival, says the movie’s director Paakhi A. Tyrewala. The prestigious gala is due to begin from May 17, and apart from Bollywood actresses Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, India will be represented on the platform by the team of Pahuna. Paakhi didn’t disclose much about the trip to the French Riviera, but told IANS over the phone: “Its trailer showcasing is in Cannes this year.” Talking about the Mary Kom star and her mother Madhu’s involvement in the project, the debutante director said: “When Priyanka got on board, things got very easy. The Sikkim government is almost like a co-producer of the film. The project started from

March 2016. Priyanka got on board in December. “She came to India and met me. Soon, the film’s recce began and we started shooting in March. Priyanka as a producer is extremely supportive. She has a vision and sees the world very differently from most of the producers I’ve seen.” She said for Priyanka, who is supporting the film through her and her mother’s banner Purple Pebble

Pictures, it’s not only about money. “She is financially very sound, especially her mother. They know their numbers and still have a vision. Pahuna doesn’t have a regional market. They saw it as world cinema. So, it feels good to have somebody by my side who exactly understands it.” Priyanka often flies in and out of India due to her commitment to the American TV series Quantico,

apart from Hollywood film Baywatch, which is ready to hit the screens on June 2. But apart from acting in international and Bollywood projects, she also manages to take out time to produce regional films. In fact, she also made an appearance in her debut Marathi production venture Ventilator. Will she do the same in “Pahuna”? “No,” said Paakhi. Any known faces in the film? “It has local talent — Amol Subba and Ishika Gurung,” said the director, based in Mumbai. Since she stays miles away from the northeast state, how did it strike her to make a movie based on it? “I was in Sikkim 13 years ago. I was an Art of Living teacher. I fell in love with the state. Then the story came to me,” she said. “The whole idea was not the lack of competition, but the fact that we will be the first feature film there. There have been (Sikkimese) films, but they have been more like home videos. There’s no film industry as such.

Stop bullying, urges Ileana

‘You are never above your art’

A

ctress Aditi Rao Hydari believes power playing is prevalent everywhere, but in the long run, it doesn’t work if a person lacks the talent. “There is power playing in every industry. However, everyone should be clear about their goals and missions and have a continuous desire to learn. You are never above your art,” Aditi said at the Women Economic Forum 2017 here.

A

ctress Ileana D’Cruz has urged everyone to stop bullying and hating. Ileana took to Instagram, where she reposted a video which delves on bullying and name calling. “Stop bullying. Stop the hate. If you have nothing nice to say then say nothing. She’s beautiful... Bullying needs to stop,” Ileana captioned the image. On the work front, Ileana, who was last seen alongside National Award winning actor Akshay Kumar in Rustom, is busy shooting for Mubarakan.

‘It was amazing to work with Akshay’

A

ctress Sana Khaan, who will be making a special appearance in the upcoming film Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, says it was an amazing experience for her to work with actor Akshay Kumar. “I don’t even think Akshay needs to be described by anyone. He is working and giving the best to the industry for the last 25 years... I can only say that the experience was amazing,” Sana told IANS. Talking about her role in the film, Sana said: “I am only doing a special appearance to be precise... It’s a village character and I am glad they thought of me in that look.”

Imagination is everything: Arjun

A

ctor Arjun Rampal, who shared a photoshopped image of Mahatma Gandhi and Dalai Lama by mistake on social media, believes in the strength of imagination. Arjun tweeted a black and white photo of Gandhi and “fake” Dalai Lama on Sunday, and captioned it: “Amazing moment captured, Mahatma Gandhi ji with his holiness Dalai Lama. Two peaceful souls.” Soon he realized it was “photoshopped”, and he apologized. “Was so happy. Well I guess it still doesn’t take away from either personalities (sic),” he wrote. Actor Kabir Bedi wrote about the “same mistake” that he made by sharing the “fake” photo.

Delighted to be amongst a gathering of women achievers, Aditi said “such platforms are instrumental in celebrating collective achievements”. “My lesson in life has been that we need to take pride in our own uniqueness and be comfortable in what you have. We are different, but our greatest strength lies in being unique,” added the actress, who will be seen in the Sanjay Dutt biopic, as well as in Bhoomi.

He is style savvy, culturally conscious, immensely proud of his roots and most of all -- passionate about fitness. 31-year old, Hardik Soni, is one of youngest self-made Indian American entrepreneurs in Chicago. As the founder and president of XDef Fitness and Personal Training, he can be credited to be the first and only from the Gujarati community in Chicago to have ventured into the fitness business. The fact that he has made a success of his venture adds to his resume. Today Mr Soni, owns two fitness facilities – the XDef Fitness at Mt Prospect and another one at Roselle. On being chosen to share his health philosophy, he says, “I feel honored if people are inspired by my experiences. If they are able to create a healthy and nurturing lifestyle for themselves, I get my due.” He also feels indebted to Dr Christopher Hubbard, director of TEDx, North Park University and to Ms Ami Thakkar, director of student leadership who invited him to the platform. Mr Soni describes himself as a true blue Chicago boy, who has learnt and practiced his trade in this city brimming with culture and community bonding. We moved to Des Plaines where my parents did everything possible to ensure that my sisters and I have a smooth childhood.” Busting the myth that most young business owners are born with a silver spoon in their mouth Mr Soni’s success story is remarkable. He informs, “We were comfortable in India but when you relocate to a new continent things changed. My dad worked at a gas station and my mom worked in a nursing home. Growing up we were not so well-to-do but despite this my parents believed in me and let me follow a path not conventionally chosen by many Indians.”

HEALTHY LIVING WITH HARDIK SONI Young fitness entrepreneur Hardik Soni of XDef Fitness is changing the way healthy living is viewed especially amongst South Asians in Chicago CHICAGO Mr Soni believes that one of the most wonderful things about being an Indian in Chicago is the immense support that you get from people in your community. He says, “Early on in my career I felt that people from my father’s generation who had come here much before us understood the real struggle of creating a space for themselves in a new land.” He adds, “Today in Chicago there are so many successful entrepreneurs, business owners, people in creative trade, not just from Gujarati or Indian backgrounds but from South Asian community who came here decades ago

Many of them go out of their way to encourage the younger generation.” He gives an example: “When I started my first facility in Mt Prospect, most of my clients came through word of mouth publicity. Since I ensured that immigrants like me get a homely vibe in my fitness centers we were able to create a dedicated community without aggressive marketing.” He also is extremely appreciative of many acts of kindness by Indians in Chicago. Mr Soni wants to do as much as he can to give back to his community. One of the reasons that prompted him to venture into fitness industry was also because he wanted to create a comfortable space for elderly people from the community to exercise. He explains, “For the young Indians, fitness forms an important part but for people from my parents generation, traditionally fitness was never given a priority. Culturally it was not common for the elderly Indians to go to a gym and least of all hire a personal trainer. However I realized that this neglect towards their health reflects in the old age. Especially for Indian women, who are so busy nurturing their families and kids that they forget about their own needs. The elders have all sorts of problems from back pain, knee pain, high blood pressure, diabetes, low endurance levels and they have no one to guide them.” He says, “I observed that even if some of them took gym memberships, they did not routinely use it. what they believe or what paperwork they may or may not have”, said Illinois Senate President John J. Cullerton, sponsor of the Trust Act. “This proposal reinforces the message that our immigrant neighbors are in fact part of our community. It is my hope that this legislation will enhance interaction between the immigrant community and state and local police to improve safety and the quality of life for all Illinoisans”. Representatives Lisa Hernandez (D-24) and Emanuel Chris Welch (D-7) plan to

co-sponsor the Trust Act as it moves from the Senate to the House next week. The Trust Act’s main provisions will: --Bar local law enforcement from engaging in immigration enforcement without a court-issued warrant. --Assist immigrant crime victims seeking legal protection. --Bar federal agents from making arrests in schools and health facilities, and bar local participation in a federal registry based on country of origin or religion.

Mystery shrouds death of Indian physician BY A STAFF WRITER ETROIT, MI – Ramesh Kumar, 32, who worked in the Urology Department of the Henry Ford Hospital, was found dead on the passenger seat of a car in a rest area, some 90 miles from Detroit. The police are investigating the case to ascertain the cause of his death. The family members of Kumar say they do not suspect anyone and have ruled out the possibility of it being an incident of hate crime. “We do not know (the reason for his murder). They (The police) are yet to find out,” said his father Narendra Kumar, a former president of the influential American Association of Physicians of Indian

BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC -- Citizenship and Immigration Services has announced a redesign to the Permanent Resident Card (also known as Green Card) and the Employment Authorization Document (EAD) as part of the Next-Generation Secure Identification Document Project. USCIS has begun issuing the new cards from May 1. These redesigns use enhanced graphics and fraud-resistant security features to create cards that are highly secure and more tamper-resistant than the ones currently in use. The new card designs demonstrate USCIS’s commitment to continue taking a proactive approach against the threat of document tampering and fraud. They are also part of an ongoing effort between USCIS, US Customs and Border Protection, and US Immigration and Customs Enforcement to enhance document security and deter counterfeiting and fraud. The new Green Cards and EADs will display the individual’s photos on both sides and show a unique graphic image and color palette: Green Cards will have an image of the Statue of Liberty and a predominately green palette. EAD cards will have an image of a bald eagle and a predominately red palette. The new card will have embedded holographic images and they will no longer display the individual’s signature. Also, Green Cards will no longer have an optical stripe on the back. How To Tell If Your Card Is Valid: Some Green Cards and EADs issued after May 1, 2017, may still display the existing design format as USCIS will continue using existing card stock until current supplies are depleted. Both the existing and the new Green Cards and EADs will remain valid until the expiration date shown on the card. Certain EADs held by individuals with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and other designated categories have been automatically extended beyond the validity date on the card. For additional information on which EADs are covered, on emay visit the Temporary Protected Status and American Competitiveness in the 21st Century Act web pages on uscis. gov. Both versions are acceptable for Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, E-Verify, and Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE). Some older Green Cards do not have an expiration date. These older Green Cards without an expiration date remain valid. Individuals who have Green Cards without an expiration date may want to consider applying for a replacement card bearing an expiration date. Obtaining the replacement card will reduce the likelihood of fraud or tampering if the card is ever lost or stolen.

IAS Spring Festival steals many hearts BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL – In an important victory for a diverse coalition of communities, the Illinois Senate on April 5 passed the Trust Act with a vote of 31 to 21. As Illinois and other governments across the country seek to protect their residents from federal anti-immigrant policies that are terrorizing communities and separating families, members of the Campaign for a Welcoming Illinois applaud Senators who understood the dire need to enact state-level safeguards in Illinois. The Trust Act (SB-31) creates a bright line between local police and federal immigration agents, and sends a message to Illinois’s immigrant residents that seeking police assistance will not result in their deportation. “If someone is going to be detained in Illinois it should be because an actual crime has occurred, not because of how they look,

BY A STAFF WRITER ROOKLYN, NY-- A Brooklyn travel agent accused of peddling phony pilgrimage packages to Muslims was sentenced to prison on April 18 as part of a plea deal. Junaid Mirza copped to third-degree grand-larceny charges in exchange for two to six years behind bars, law-enforcement sources said. Mirza allegedly scammed clients out of more than $350,000 by selling them fake travel packages. The 49-year-old primarily targeted Pakistani immigrants and Muslims, duping at least 25 hopeful travelers through a series of agencies he established between July 2011 and September 2015. Mirza purportedly sought out Muslims going on pilgrimage, selling them costly, allinclusive packages for Haj and other religious excursions.

Indian cabbie detained for deportation order

Indian pleads guilty to call center scam

BY A STAFF WRITER ANTA ANA, CA.-- A Southern California taxi driver originally from India was detained on May 8 by U.S. immigration authorities during a check-in for an 18-year-old deportation order. Gurmukh Singh, a 47-year-old husband and father of two teenage girls, was detained at US Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s offices in Santa Ana. It wasn’t the first time Singh was detained by immigration authorities. In 2013, he was arrested upon attending an interview for an application for a green card that was filed by his US citizen wife. He said he spent five months in custody. “They told me that under President Trump’s executive actions,Singh’s case is now a priority,” his lawyer Monica Eav Glicken said. Singh came to the US in 1998 after sneaking across the US-Mexico border. He applied for asylum, claiming he was fleeing persecution as a Sikh, but was not approved. From there, his case was shipped to the immigration courts, where Singh attended a hearing. There, he was issued a deportation order, she said.

BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- A 28-yearold Indian national in the US has pleaded guilty for his role in a multi-million dollar scam in which individuals from call centers located in India impersonated US tax and immigration officials to defraud victims across America. Ashvinbhai Chaudhari, who most recently resided in Texas, pleaded guilty before US District Court Judge David Hittner of the Southern District of Texas. His sentencing is set for July. Chaudhari pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering for

Glicken said Singh told his lawyers he didn’t know he had the order when he attended his immigration interview in 2013. Singh, who lives in the Orange County city of Garden Grove, said he wants the US to let him stay in the country while filing paperwork toward getting his green card, and that he would travel to India to complete the process so he could return and remain here with his family. He told reporters before his check-in that he was afraid of what would happen to his wife, who suffers diabetes, and his USborn daughters, one who is soon headed to college, if he were taken into custody.

his role in liquidating and laundering victim payments generated through various telephone fraud and money laundering schemes via India-based call centers. To date, Chaudhari and over 50 other individuals and five India-based call centers have been charged for their roles in the fraud and money-laundering scheme in an indictment returned by a federal grand jury last year in October. He is the second Indian national to have pleaded guilty in the call center scam. Bharat Kumar Patel, 43, previously pleaded guilty for his role in the fraud and money laundering scheme.

Chest irradiation in Hodgkin lymphoma bad for heart VIENNA: Hodgkin lymphoma patients who receive high dose irradiation as part of their treatment at an early age suffer from severe coronary artery disease (CAD) decades later, a research has said. Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a type of lymphoma — cancer of a part of the immune system called the lymph system — which is generally believed to result from white blood cells of the lymphocyte kind with symptoms like fever, night sweats and weight loss. “Patients with Hodgkin lymphoma receive high dose mediastinal irradiation at a young age as part of their treatment,” said Alexander van Rosendael, a medical doctor at Leiden University Medical Centre in the Netherlands. Irradiation of the chest can cause inflammation of the coronary arteries, making patients more vulnerable to developing CAD. “There is an ongoing debate about whether to screen patients who get chest irradiation for CAD,” Rosendael added. The study involved 79 patients who had received irradiation 20 years ago for Hodgkin lymphoma and were free from it for at least 10 years. The findings showed that Hodgkin

patients who had chest irradiation had much more CAD than people of the same age who did not have irradiation. “The CAD occurred at a young age -- patients were 45 years old on average -- and was probably caused by the irradiation. The computed tomography angiography (CTA) was done about 20 years after chest irradiation so there was time for CAD to develop,” noted Rosendael. The study that was presented at International Conference on Nuclear Cardiology and Cardiac (ICNC) in Vienna further stated that irradiated patients had all the features of high risk CAD.

C LONDON: Deficiency of a protein that acts as a skin barrier is responsible for triggering eczema — an itchy inflammation of the skin, scientists said. Atopic eczema is a common skin condition and is often found in children in the first year of their life and persists into adulthood with severe itching that has profound effects on well-being and may lead to sleep disturbance. The findings showed that the lack of protein filaggrin impacts other proteins and pathways in the skin, which in turn drive the development of eczema. “We have shown for the first time that loss of the filaggrin protein alone is sufficient to alter key proteins and pathways involved in triggering eczema,” said Nick Reynolds, Professor Dermatology at Newcastle University in England.” For the study, published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (JACI), the team developed a human model system.

The researchers showed in mice that the size of the liver increases by almost half before returning to its initial dimensions, according to the phases of activity and rest. In a study published in the jour-

The mice forage and feed at night, while the day is spent resting. “In rodents following a usual circadian rhythm, we observed that the liver gradually increases during

the active phase to reach a peak of more than 40 per cent at the end of the night, and that it returns to its initial size during the day,” said first author of the study Flore Sinturel from University of Geneva. Researchers showed that the size

of liver cells and their protein content oscillate in a daily manner. The number of ribosomes, the organelles responsible for producing the proteins required for the various functions of the liver, fluctuates together with the size of the cell.
