US re-indicts Khobragade, India protests

Diplomat Devyani Khobragade’s arrest and strip search in New York on December 12 has strained relations between India and the US.

The development comes two days after a court dismisses visa fraud case against the Indian diplomat IANS, WASHINGTON

D

ashing hopes of a closure of the Devyani Khobragade affair, Indian American prosecutor Preet Bharara has secured a fresh indictment of the Indian diplomat even as India described it as an “unnecessary step”. Two days after a New York judge dismissed the visa fraud case against Devyani Khobragade, India’s then consul general in New York whose December 12 arrest

and strip search strained ties between the two countries, a U.S . grand jury on March 14 again indicted her on the same criminal charges. “A grand jury has returned a true bill today on a two-count criminal indictment of Devyani Khobragade,” Bharara’s office said in an announcement. An arrest warrant was also issued after the indictment, according to Jerika Richardson, spokesperson for the U.S. attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York.

and turbans. Over 100 members of Congress from both Democratic and Republican parties made the plea in a March 10 letter to the U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel to promote inclusion of Sikhs in the U.S. Armed Forces by updating their appearance regulations. The major bipartisan push for

change was led by Joe Crowley, Democratic Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus in the House, and Rodney Frelinghuysen Republican Chairman of the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee. In a statement on the letter’s release, Jaishankar said: “The Congressional initiative is an important step towards upholding the cultural rights of the Sikh community in the United States. “The large number of signatories to this letter testifies to the important role played by the Sikh community in the United States and its various walks of life.” “The Sikh community’s success in the United States is a source of pride for India and a pillar of the India-U.S. partnership,” he said. Speaking of the contributions of the Sikh community in India, Jaishankar noted, “India takes pride in being the cradle of Sikhism. The Sikh community is an intrinsic part of India’s multi-religious and pluralistic fabric.” “The tremendous progress and prosperity they have achieved, and their enormous contribution to their motherland, speak volumes about their indefatigable spirit of enterprise and diligence,” Jaishankar said.

Khobragade faces one count of visa fraud and one count of making false statements for allegedly lying on a visa application about how much she paid her housekeeper, Sangeeta Richard, according to the indictment filed in a Manhattan federal court on March 14. India on March 15 said the second indictment of Khobragade in the U.S. was an “unnecessary step”. “The second indictment of Devyani Khobragade is an unnecessary step. We are disappointed.

We reiterate that the case has no merit,” external affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said in a tweet. “India’s government will no longer engage on this case in the US legal system,” he said. Khobragade, who according to the U.S. had limited consular immunity, was reassigned by India to a UN job after her arrest. But the U.S. asked her to return to India on January 9 after New Delhi refused to waive her then newly-acquired full diplomatic

immunity. Her lawyer Daniel Arshack declined comment after the fresh indictment which effectively returns the case to where it was before March 12 dismissal. “The government of India will respond in due course,” he said in a statement. U.S. District Judge Shira Scheindlin ruled that Khobragade, India’s former deputy consul-general in New York, had diplomatic immunity in her new job at the UN on January 9 and could not be prosecuted.

US ‘very hopeful’ on future ties with India WASHINGTON: Seeking to distance itself from United States prosecutor Preet Bharara securing a re-indictment of Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade, the U.S. state department says it’s “very hopeful about what the future holds” for India-US relationship. “Obviously, this is in the hands of the Department of Justice,” spokesperson Jen Psaki told reporters on March 17 via teleconference in snowbound Washington when asked about the re-indictment

of Khobragade two days after the dismissal of a visa fraud case against her by a New York judge. “In terms of the future of our relationship, as Jen Psaki you know, Assistant Secretary (of State Nisha Desai) Biswal was just in India,” she said. “She had a productive trip while she was there. She had a range of meetings while she was there.”

“Our relationship and all of the issues we work together on are far too important,” Psaki said. “So we’re looking forward, and we’re very hopeful about what the future holds.” Asked to comment on the upcoming parliamentary elections in India, Psaki said: “I think we’re conveying pretty clearly that we have an important relationship and we work together on economic, strategic, and security issues.” Biswal’s “trip was evidence of that as well”, she said.

bout one in four business school graduates in India find jobs in America, second only to China, which sends 38 percent of its alumni to the United States, according to a new survey. While 64 percent of Indian business graduates stay in their home country, 23 percent go the U.S. and two percent to Canada. In the case of China, 48 percent stay home, while eight percent prefer Hong Kong as their second job destination after the U.S.

Around 23 percent of Indian students shift to the US for jobs.

The Alumni Perspectives Survey by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), which administers the worldwide Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT), is based on a poll of 20,704 alumni from 129 nations, including 984 from India. After India, Mexico (18

It said the right to health was a fundamental and universal right of all citizens, which needs to be respected and realized within a time-frame. Kejriwal ready to lock horns with Modi Underlining that it was ‘important to defeat Modi’, the former Delhi chief minister said he was ready to accept the ‘big challenge’; dares Modi to fight from one seat IANS, BANGALORE

A

day after the BJP fielded Narendra Modi as its candidate from Varanasi, Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal on March 16 declared that he was ready to contest against the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate in the Lok Sabha polls. However, Kejriwal told a huge election rally here that though AAP leaders had asked him to take on Modi, he would do so only after knowing the response of the people of the Hindu holy city in Uttar Pradesh March 23. “My party has said you should take on Modi in this election,” Kejriwal told his audience, triggering a roar of approval. Underlining that it was “important to defeat Modi”, the former Delhi chief minister said: “It is a very big challenge. It is not a small challenge... I am ready to accept this

BRIEFS Black flags, eggs greet Kirron Kher CHANDIGARH: Actress Kirron Kher was greeted with black flags and eggs by a small group of BJP activists as she arrived in Chandigarh on March 18 to contest the Lok Sabha election. The activists, who feel she is an “outsider”, showed her black flags as she flew in from Mumbai where she lives. They tried to disrupt her arrival at the Bharatiya Janata Party office here.

Jagadambika Pal, Raju Srivastava join BJP NEW DELHI: Congress leader Jagadambika Pal and stand up comedian Raju Srivastava on March 19 joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Pal, formerly a Congress MP and the Uttar Pradesh Congress chief, had earlier resigned from the Lok Sabha as well as the party. Pal, 63, has been a three-time legislator and minister in Uttar Pradesh. Srivastava was earlier offered a ticket by the Samajwadi Party to contest the Kanpur Lok Sabha seat but he opted to join the BJP. BJP president Rajnath Singh welcomed both to the party.

challenge.” Kejriwal quickly added that he will visit Varanasi March 23 and take a final decision after finding out if people there wanted him to contest from there. “I appeal to people from all over the country to reach Varanasi March 23,” Kejriwal said in an appeal that clearly indicated that the AAP was

keen to challenge the Gujarat chief minister. Varanasi, about 290 km from state capital Lucknow, will vote May 12 in the ninth and last phase of parliamentary polls. Stating that the political establishment has become a symbol of corruption, communalism and rising food prices, Kejriwal said it was important to defeat the top leaders

of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress. “We have to defeat Narendra Modi too.” But he insisted that Modi must fight from only one parliamentary seat, not two as it is being rumored. “We hear he is looking for a safe seat. Why does he want a safe seat? We need a bold prime minister, not one who looks for a safe seat.”

Kejriwal’s campaign theme was that people across the country were sick and tired of established political parties and desired change. He particularly targeted the Congress and the BJP as well as Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi and BJP’s star leader Modi. “People are, of course, angry with the Congress. Some say they will get only 100 (Lok Sabha) seats this time, some say only 50, some say only 25.” In the same breath, Kejriwal said the electorate also felt betrayed by parties such as the Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party, Indian National Lok Dal, Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party. Terming the Congress and the BJP as two sides of the same coin when it comes to corruption and looting the country, Kejriwal said his party has decided to contest against important leaders like Rahul Gandhi, Kapil Sibal, M. Veerappa Moily and Sharad Pawar, who have “cheated the people”.

Kalmadi denied ticket, Jogi, Pilot, Azhar on list IANS, NEW DELHI

T

he Congress on March 18 declared its third list of party candidates, fielding former Chhattisgarh chief minister Ajit Jogi from Mahasamund and Vishwajeet Kadam from Pune in place of sitting MP Suresh Kalmadi, who is facing a corruption case related to the 2010 Commonwealth Games. The party has fielded cricketerturned-politician Mohammed Azharuddin from Tonk-Sawai Madhopur in Rajasthan. Azharuddin is a sitting MP from Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh. The list of 58 names declared on March 18 included Rajasthan chief Sachin Pilot (Ajmer), Haryana chief Ashok Tanwar (Sirsa) and Punjab chief Partap

Singh Bajwa (Gurdaspur). There was speculation that both Pilot and Tanwar were seeking a change of constituency but both will be contesting from the seats they won in

2009. Other prominent names in the list from Rajasthan include union minister Chandresh Kumari (Jodhpur), C.P. Joshi (Jaipur Rural) and Jyoti Mirdha (Nagaur). Joshi is sitting MP from Bhilwara in Rajasthan. The party has fielded Rao Dharampal from Gurgaon, Rajinder Singh from Hamirpur in Himachal Pradesh and Srikant Jena from Balasore in Odisha. The list includes names of several sitting MPs, including five from Delhi. Ajay Maken will contest from New Delhi, while union ministers Kapil Sibal and Krishna Tirath will be the candidates from Chandni Chowk and North West Delhi respectively. Former Delhi unit president Jai Prakash Agarwal will fight from North East Delhi, while

Sandeep Dikshit, son of former chief minister Sheila Dikshit, will again contest from East Delhi. The party, however, kept up the suspense as to whom it would field against BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi in Varanasi. There was intense speculation that Kalmadi, who had won the Lok Sabha elections thrice, would be given a Congress ticket from Pune. Kalmadi, chief of the 2010 Commonwealth Games Organizing Committee, is an accused in a corruption case related to the sporting event. He was arrested for his alleged role in awarding a contract for installing a timing-scoring-result system at an exorbitant cost, allegedly causing a loss of over `95 crore to the public exchequer.

Modi is ‘distrustful’ trending on Twitter ‘Trinamool an anarchy that works’ NEW DELHI: BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi was trending on Twitter on March 18 — thanks to certain uncomplimentary observations by a US consulate official describing him as an “insular and distrustful person” and which have been published on Wikileaks. While some of the twitterati gleefully played up certain uncomplimentary observations about Modi, a few others felt the Gujarat strongman needed nobody’s certificate and that all knew how good he was. While one of the tweets read:

“@friendscongress US ambassador: Modi ‘insular, distrustful person.. reigns by fear and intimidation.. hoards power..”, another felt that Wikileaks was using Modi’s name for publicity. “In his post , U.S. Consul General Michael S. Owen makes a number of observations on the Gujarat CM’s style of functioning, how the voters in his state perceive him and his ambitions of running for the post of PM. The official gives some insight when he says that while Modi “can be likeable in public , he is a distrustful person who rules with a small group of advisors”.

In Trinamool, everything belongs to Big Mama,” the Lok Sabha member from Jadavpur in West Bengal told IANS, quoting Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s satirical commentary “Big Mama’s Funer-

Appreciate Kejriwal’s anti-corruption plank Will Narendra Modi’s progress be checked by an anti-corruption campaign? The results would show how much of Modi’s sheen was lost SAEED NAQVI, NEW DELHI

I

t is true that every anti corruption movement in recent history has decisively shifted the centre of gravity of Indian politics yards to the right, as writers have asserted recently. Such campaigns have always had considerable media support. Internal tussles have had their external stimuli quite consistently until the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990-91. Thereafter, free from external ideological pressures, then prime minister P.V. Narasimha Rao set Manmohan Singh, his finance minister, on a new path. This became Manmohan Singh’s chosen route even during his own two terms as prime minister. He hitched his wagon to a hyperpower seeking full spectrum global dominance, and sometimes by that association looked energetic during UPA-I.

The hyperpower started running out of steam by 2008 when Lehman Brothers collapsed, signaling structural flaws in the engine of capitalism. That is the development after which Manmohan Singh has looked limp and directionless throughout UPA-II. The current hype around Narendra Modi is designed to provide the contrast. The alternative to Modi is no longer the Congress but a coalition of muscular, regional parties with help from either of the mainstream parties. Brooding over this politics, like Banquo’s ghost, is the AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal. His contribution to the outcome of these elections will be

only known May 16, when the results are declared. One achievement must be credited to him straightaway. He has removed the screen behind which Congress and the BJP romance. Kejriwal has taken full advantage of the media attention — at the India Today Conclave, for instance — to tear into the Congress-BJP collusion. Will this considerable expose not have a bearing on the election? That the two parties are indistinguishable on economic and social issues cannot be lost on the electorate, particularly minorities. Look at the list of their candidates: they are both equally thick skinned on corruption. The situation poses an interesting

That the two parties are indistinguishable on economic and social issues cannot be lost on the electorate, particularly minorities

question. As mentioned at the outset, all anti corruption campaigns have provided occasion for politics to be shifted further to the right. In which direction will Kejriwal’s double-fisted assault on both, the BJP and the Congress, shift Indian politics? “Crony capitalism” is clearly in his target. This cannot be honeyed music to “crony capitalists” who have controlling interests in both the national parties. When one considers the ideological infighting within the Congress upto and after Independence, Jawaharlal Nehru comes across as something of a Samson, holding on his shoulders the temple of a secular, socialist republic. On all social and foreign policy issues his colleagues, Sardar Patel, Rajendra Prasad, Rajaji — were all suspicious of nonalignment. They would have taken India into the Western camp from day one of Independence. Don’t for-

get, it was only “transfer of powers” that took place in 1947. It were the ideological heirs of Nehru’s opponents who in 1969 sought to wrench the party away from Indira Gandhi’s socialist platform. There was considerable external support to Indira’s instinctive moves. After all, Indo-Soviet relations peaked during the 1971 Bangladesh war. It is not surprising therefore that this year, Narendra Modi was being audaciously built up as the mascot for good governance and Hindu nationalism. This is when Kejriwal may have spoilt Modi’s party. For the last four months AAP has been pegging away at his crony capitalist links. The media is playing down the negatives. Will Modi’s progress be checked by an anti corruption campaign? This will be the first time that such a campaign has not boosted the Right.

One man’s mission to uplift tribal children JATINDRA DASH, BHUBANESWAR

H

e is hailed as a “god” by children of poor tribals of Odisha, a man who sought to overcome the deprivation of his childhood to build an impressive institution that is now a beacon hope for thousands of tribal families. Achyut Samanta, who lived his childhood in dire poverty after he lost his father at the age of four, has been bringing out tribal children from their homes and educating them to ensure they stand on their own two feet. About 23 percent of Odisha’s 42 million population are tribals and they are considered among the poorest of the poor with high illiteracy rate. Samanta started Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) as a small industrial training institute in 1993 with `5000 — the sum total of his savings — in a

rented shed. A year later, he launched the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), its social arm. Today, KIIT University has 28 schools offering more than 100 programs and is one of the finest multi-disciplinary universities in Odisha. KISS, spread over 80 acres with all modern facilities, is providing

residential kindergarten to postgraduate level educational and vocational training for free to over 20,000 tribal children from 62 tribes, 13 of them primitive, under one roof. KISS’ monthly recurring expenditure works out to be over `60 million ($985,000) and since its inception it has been running on

voluntary financial contributions from staff, students, managements and well-wishers. “All donate freely,” Samanta told IANS in an interview. Samanta later set up a 1,500-bed hospital and developed a cluster of villages in his native place into a model one with all the amenities of a city, among many other humanitarian activities. The more than 25 sq km complex which houses most of the institutions founded by Samanta here has been transformed into a modern township, just on the edge of Bhubaneswar, providing livelihood to millions. He believes in the “Art of Giving” and does not own any land or building in his name or posses a bank account. He said the success of KIIT, fuelled by the general boom in private education, helped him to support his humanitarian activities.

Born on April 19, 1965, in a small village of Cuttack district, Samanta worked to support himself while attending school and eventually earned a post-graduate degree in chemistry before joining a local college as a teacher. This, however, did not satisfy him. “This is when I decided to start KIIT and KISS,” he said. Tribal children often suffer from extreme discrimination. Left-wing extremists also lure them to swell their cadres. “If we don’t provide them education many of them will end up as Maoists,” Samanta said. A strict vegetarian, clad in a skyblue jeans and a white shirt and wearing rubber slippers, people often find him working at a desk under a tree. “It is an example for all of us that gives hope and a pattern to emulate in the country,” social activist and Magsaysay Award winner Aruna Roy said.

Crimea joins Russia, world livid Putin’s decree comes hours after Western countries announced sanctions against Russian and Ukrainian leaders IANS, MOSCOW

R

ussian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree to merge Crimea with Russia. Crimea, a Ukrainian autonomous republic, held a referendum on March 16, with some 96.6 percent of the voters for joining Russia. Also on March 17, the Crimean Parliament adopted a resolution on the independence of the territory and asked Russia to admit it as its new constituent member. Putin’s decree came hours after West countries announced sanctions against Russian and Ukrainian politicians. The European Union decided to impose sanctions, including visa bans and freezing assets, against 21 officials from the two countries. The U.S. also put such highprofile officials as Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin

Putin calls up Manmohan to explain Crimea claim NEW DELHI: Hours after a defiant Russia claimed the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea as part of its territory, Russian President Vladimir Putin called up Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to explain Moscow’s position with regard to the developments in Ukraine and the referendum in breakaway Crimea. The phone call took place around 7.30 p.m. on March 18 after Putin signed a draft treaty with Crimean leaders to make the strategic peninsula a part of Russia.

and Federal Council, Upper House of Parliament, chairperson Valentina Matvienko on the sanction list, which Matvienko slammed as “political blackmail”. Britain has suspended all military cooperation with Russia and halted all extant licences for direct military export to Russia, British Foreign Secretary William Hague said on March 18. Meanwhile, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said that Russia remains a member of the G8 in response to reports saying it was booted out of the group after signing a treaty accepting Crimea as a part of the Russian territory, a German government statement said.

Missing plane’s mystery deepens KUALA LUMPUR: Multinational search operations for the Malaysian airliner that went missing March 8 remained futile even as the carrier said that initial investigation revealed that it was the co-pilot who spoke the last words before the plane disappeared. Australian Defense Minister David Johnston said his country would do what it could to assist Malaysia to locate flight MH370 in whatever state it was in, Xinhua reported. “We are now changing our focus to the central eastern Indian Ocean to try to solve this mystery,” he said. Australia has provided two RAAF P-3C Orion aircraft to assist the Malaysian government in its search since March 9. Malaysia Airlines MH370 with 239 passengers and crew on board vanished mysteriously about an hour after taking off from Kuala Lumpur on March 8. The Boeing 777-200ER was initially presumed to have crashed off the Vietnamese coast in the South China Sea. The plane was due to land in Beijing at 6.30 a.m. the same day. Contact with the plane was lost along

with its radar signal at 1.40 a.m. March 8 when it was flying over the air traffic control area of Ho Chi Minh City. India has supported search operations in the Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal but this was suspended on March 16 at the request of Kuala Lumpur. The Indian defense ministry

said the search would remain suspended until notice by Malaysia on which areas to search. Meanwhile, Maldives police have launched an investigation into reports that residents of the remote island of Kuda Huvadhoo in Dhaal Atoll saw a “low flying jumbo jet “ on March 8 morning after a Malaysia Airlines plane went missing.

UNSC extends mandate of its assistance mission in Afghanistan UNITED NATIONS: The UN Security Council on March 17 renewed the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) for another year to provide support to the country’s upcoming presidential and provincial elections. In a resolution unanimously adopted the 15- member council “decides to extend until 17 March 2015 the mandate of UNAMA”, Xinhua reported. The security council also decided that UNAMA will continue to “ support, at the request of the Afghan authorities, the organization of future Afghan elections, including the 2014 presidential and provincial council elections and the 2015

parliamentary elections, as well as to strengthen, in support of the government of Afghanistan’s efforts, the sustainability, integrity and inclusiveness of the electoral process,” said the resolution. UNAMA was established by the council in 2002 in order to help Afghanistan achieve peace and development. In the resolution, the council also reiterated “its concern about the security situation in Afghanistan, in particular the ongoing violent and terrorist activities by the Taliban, Al Qaeda and other violent and extremist groups”. The country’s third presidential and provincial council election is slated for April 5.

Pak to form of anti-terror forces ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on March 18 approved the establishment of anti-terror rapidresponse forces at the federal and provincial levels with quality and trained manpower, a leading Pakistani daily reported. Sharif also issued directions to immediately establish a National Intelligence Directorate under National Counter-Terrorism Authority in a bid to

strengthen coordination between military and civilian agencies, The Dawn said in a report. The prime minister gave these directives after reviewing the newly legislated legal framework dealing with counterterrorism. “The prime minister said the provincial governments and institutions had to work hard to contribute and establish a secure environment by eliminating terrorism as economic prosperity was linked with security and peace in the country,” said a statement from the prime minister’s office.

Qanooni, who is presently a member of the Lower House of the Afghan Parliament, had also served as speaker of the house, and interior and education minister. He will face a vote of confidence in Parliament soon.

YANGON: Myanmar’s Union Election Commission (UEC) has drawn a strategic plan for holding the 2015 general elections in a free and fair manner, the state media reported on March 19. UEC Chairman U Tin Aye asked the commission to prepare well for the elections, slated for late 2015, Xinhua reported, citing the state media. Seeking suggestions from political parties, U Tin Aye said the commission was striving to lay down rules for the election campaign. He

disclosed that the commission, in collaboration with the International Foundation for Election System (IFES), would conduct a pilot project on ballot collection in urban and rural areas and “unsafe” places in May. The commission has drafted a “12chapter strategy” for holding the 2015 elections, including a chapter calling for cooperation with civil society organizations which are to work as election observers. Myanmar’s last general election were held November 7, 2010.

US Senate confirms Kumar to key trade job Arun Madhavan Kumar is the third Indian-American to hold a top post at the US State Department ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

T

he United States Senate has confirmed yet another Indian-American nominee of President Barack Obama to lead the trade promotion arm of the U.S. Commerce Department charged with helping U.S. companies succeed in markets around the world. Kerala University physics graduate Arun Madhavan Kumar was confirmed to be assistant secretary of commerce and director general of the U.S. and Foreign Commercial Service by a voice vote on March 12 along with Puneet Talwar, a longtime White House national security staffer. As the State Department’s new assistant secretary for political-military affairs, Talwar would be serving as a bridge between the State and Defense departments. He becomes the third IndianAmerican in a top position at the State Department after Nisha Desai Biswal, point person for South and Central Asia and USAID Administrator Rajiv Shah, highest ranking Indian-American in Obama administration. At over two dozen, Obama administration boasts of having the highest number of Indian Americans in key jobs than any previous administrations in U.S. During his confirmation hearing, Kumar told the Senate Commerce Committee that he would “like to strengthen the focus on the markets offering the biggest opportunities for American products and services, and on orchestrating efforts to increase our market share in those markets”. Kumar, who succeeds another

Obamacare, gun lobby may halt Murthy’s run WASHINGTON: Vivek Murthy, the physician who has been nominated by President Barack Obama to be the next Surgeon General of the United States, might see his rise through Washington come to a halt. A staunch defender of Obamacare, Murthy is behind Doctors for America, an organization that was instrumental in grabbing early support for the Affordable Care Act. Now, the implementation of that law has Democrats reeling, with many of them keeping themselves distanced from the legislation out of fear that any affiliation with it could cost them re-election. But perhaps more damning to Murthy’s chances of confirmation is the intense opposition he faces from the NRA. The organization sent an email to supporters last week, urging them to oppose Obama’s nominee. Although, some reports indicate that Democrats are not yet supporting

Vivek Murthy

Murthy openly, but are simply changing their strategy in terms of campaigning for him. He needs confirmation from the Senate in order to get the Surgeon General position, the highest medical office in the country. If he is confirmed, he will be both the youngest Surgeon General in the U.S. history and the first Indian American to hold the post.

World T20: India fails to warm up Malinga grabs four wickets for Sri Lanka as Dhoni’s men lose their first World Twenty20 warm-up match by 5 runs IANS, MIRPUR

I

ndia went down to Sri Lanka by five runs in their first ICC World Twenty20 warm-up game at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium here on March 17. Chasing a target of 154, India came close to kissing distance of a win, thanks to a cameo of Ravichandran Ashwin’s 12-ball 19 but were bowled out for 148 runs in 20 overs. Curiously skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni didn’t come out to bat due to an injury. Lasith Malinga was again the destroyer-in-chief with his four for 30 and did the trick for Sri Lanka in the last over when India needed 12 runs. Ashwin flicked the second ball for a four to raise hopes but Stuart Binny (14) was run out in the next ball to dash all hopes. Malinga clinically wiped out the tail in the last two balls to wrap up a good win for Sri Lanka. India also made a poor start losing

the openers Shikhar Dhawan (2) and Rohit Sharma (4) inside five overs for just 19 runs on board. Suresh Raina (41 off 31 balls) and comeback man Yuvraj Singh (33 off 28 balls) brought back the innings on track with their 35-run stand. Just when it looked that India had recovered some ground, Raina, who struck five fours and a six, departed as he mistimed a shot and Rangana Herath took a good catch at long-off off spinner Ajantha Mendis. Ajnikya Rahane didn’t trouble the scorers and soon from 54 for two, India were soon struggling at 56 for four. Virat Kohli (17) and Ravindra Jadeja (12) got good starts but failed to convert them into match-winning scores. Earlier, Sri Lanka overcame an unimpressive start to make a competitive 153 for six in 20 overs. Mahela Jayawardene was the top scorer with 30 while skipper Dinesh Chandimal made 21. Nuwan Kulasekara made a quick-fire

unbeaten 14-ball 21 while Thisara Perera remained not out on 18 from 11 balls. Ashwin was the pick of the Indian bowlers with three for 22 from his four overs while Varun Aaron also picked up one for 18 from his three overs. Put in, Sri Lanka lost three quick wickets as they reached 77 for three in 11 overs. Kumar Sangakkara (4) also fell in the 12th over that left Sri Lanka at a precarious 77/4. But a captain’s knock from Chandimal rescued the Sri Lankans. It was a patient but a responsible knock of 25 balls that had one four and a six, and it help both Kulasekara and Perera to go after the Indian bowlers in the death overs. The Sri Lankans spanked 50 runs off the last five overs including 17 runs off the last over from Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Kulasekara hit the Indian pacer for a four and a six in consecutive deliveries while Perera rounded off the innings with a four, a clever scoop past the short-fine leg.

Saina seeded eighth Sania-Black loses BNP Paribas final at India Open IANS, INDIAN WELLS (CALIFORNIA)

NEW DELHI: World No.8 shuttler Saina Nehwal is the only Indian to have been seeded at the $250,000 India Open Super Series to be held at the Siri Fort Sports Complex here on April 1-6. Saina has been seeded eighth in the draw that was made on March 18. She faces an easy opener against Austrian Simone Prutsch in the first round of India’s premier badminton tournament. World No.1 and reigning Olympic champion Li Xuerui of China is the top seed while defending champion and world No.4 Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand has been seeded fourth. Saina’s compatriot world No.9 P.V. Sindhu will take on second seed and World No.2 Shixian

Wang of China in the opener. But the 18-year-old Hyderabadi can take confidence from the fact that she has a 3-0 win-record over the Chinese and defeated her last week too at the Swiss Open quarterfinals. The other Indians in the women’s singles main

ndia’s Sania Mirza and her Zimbabwean partner Cara Black went down to top seeds Hsieh Su-Wei of Taiwan and Peng Shuai of China in the women’s doubles final of the BNP Paribas Open tennis here. Hseih and Peng maintained their perfect record in the finals, improving to an 11-0 mark with a 7-6(5), 6-2 win over Sania and Cara on March 14. “I think we are not coming here for 11 record, whatever,” said Hsieh. “We just try for every match, try to win. So we didn’t think about the (record) or anything like that. When

we get into the final, we don’t think. We just try every point. This is the main key we win.” Hsieh and Peng edged a tight first set after nearly an hour’s play and rolled out to a 4-0 lead in the second. They relinquished a break, but regrouped to win the final two

games. “First set we were down when we started,” said Peng. “It’s really windy, and (they’re also a) really good doubles team. Black has a lot of experience for the doubles and gave us like a lot pressure. Really happy to win again.”

enowned English Grand Master Nigel Short on March 17 prophesied that India’s Viswanathan Anand, who lost the world championship title last year, would not be able to recapture the honors as top class chess was a “young man’s game”. Anand, a five time world champion, had gone down to Norway’s Magnus Carlsen in the title duel last November. Describing Anand as one of the greatest chess players, Short said: “I don’t’ think it is possible for him to win the world chess title again.”

Replying to a query as whether the Anand era in chess world has come to an end, Nigel Short said:

“His defeat to Carlsen was very severe and damaging for his career”.

DOCTOR, PHARMACIST HAND-IN-GLOVE IN HEALTH CARE FRAUD BY A STAFF WRITER

A

doctor, a pharmacist, and a marketer have been convicted in a federal court in Detroit for health care fraud and controlled substance distribution. A jury returned guilty verdicts against Dr. Carl Fowler, M.D., of West Bloomfield, Michigan, pharmacist Mukesh Khunt, of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and Michael Thoran of Detroit. Fowler and Thoran were convicted on all three of the counts with which they were charged: conspiracies to commit health care fraud, to distribute controlled substances, and to pay or receive health care kickbacks. Khunt was convicted of six of the seven counts with which he was charged: health care fraud conspiracy, conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, two counts health care fraud, and two counts of controlled substances distribution. The jury was unable to reach a verdict on the seventh count charging a conspiracy to pay or receive health care kickbacks. U.S. Attorney Barbara L. McQuade stated, “Law enforcement investigators in metro-Detroit are aggressively investigating health care fraud and detecting abuses by doctors and pharmacists. We hope that prosecutions like this one will deter

Mukesh Khunt medical professionals from stealing taxpayer funds intended for health care.” Prosecutors said that the evidence presented during the three-week trial demonstrated that, from approximately January 2006 through August 2011, Canton Pharmacist Babubhai Patel owned and controlled 26 pharmacies (termed “the Patel Pharmacies” at trial), which operated in and around Detroit. According to the government, Patel’s model for turning a profit at his pharmacies was based upon large-scale health care fraud and the diversion of controlled substances.

Patel paid cash kickbacks and other things of value to physicians in exchange for those physicians writing prescriptions for expensive medications, without regard to medical necessity, that could be billed to Medicare, Medicaid, or a private insurer through one of the Patel Pharmacies, the government asserted. Physicians affiliated with Patel also would write prescriptions for controlled substances for their patients, again regardless of medical necessity, which then would be filled at one of the Patel Pharmacies. These controlled substances were distributed to patients and patient recruiters as a kickback in exchange for the patients patronizing Patel Pharmacy, the government contended. Pharmacists at the Patel Pharmacies would increase the pharmacies’ profits by billing insurers for medications never actually distributed to patients, according to the evidence at trial. The evidence presented at trial showed that Fowler was one of the physicians to whom Patel paid bribes and kickbacks in exchange for referrals of prescriptions. In exchange, Dr. Fowler wrote numerous prescriptions for expensive medications, without regard to medical necessity, that could be filled at one of the Patel Pharmacies. He also wrote

Poll monitoring benefits Cook County voters BY A STAFF WRITER

HICAGO -- On March 18, Asian Americans Advancing Justice (Chicago), in partnership with Common Cause Illinois and the Chicago Lawyers’ Committee, ran a poll monitoring operation covering over 85 precincts across Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. Advancing Justice--Chicago focused on monitoring 56 precincts federally designated for language assistance in both Chinese and South Asian languages, to ensure that the election law was properly implemented. Polling sites ranged from Schaumburg to Chinatown. Early polling reports indicate that overall, Cook County sites performed well. There were two instances of absent bilingual election judges, some technology issues at sites leading to slightly longer voting times, and two incidents of inappropriate comments from election judges. Advancing Justice--Chicago legal director

Andy Kang described the poll monitoring goal as, “designed to ensure that any voter who is able to get assistance isn’t turned away.” He a d d e d : “ W h i l e w e’v e s e e n improvement in terms of materials and responsiveness from election judges, there’s still some work to be done in making polling sites more accessible, and election judges as sensitive as possible to the language assistance needs of limited-English speaking voters, who are entitled to certain voting rights under federal law.” This Election Day effort comes on the heels of the Pan Asian Voter Empowerment (PAVE) Coalition’s successful early voting campaign, which brought 512 voters to the polls on March 8 and March 15. One of the biggest campaigns was led by the Korean American Resource & Cultural Center. Executive Director Sik Son noted, “our successful get-out-the-vote efforts are a marker of how savvy our community is in connecting their issues and needs to the ballot.

We’re looking forward to an even more robust campaign for the November election cycle.” On March 20, nearly 100 organizers and leaders in the Asian American community will go to Springfield to advocate for issues on the Asian American State Agenda. Agenda items include a Same Day registration initiative and a domestic workers’ rights bill. Kathleen Jung Hee Fernicola, Director of Policy and Programs at Advancing Justice-Chicago, notes, “We believe in expanding the opportunities to register and vote, as well as increasing the accuracy and integrity of our election system. Same Day Registration is a key to unlocking the power of our growing community.” These combined efforts speak to the growing political will and power of one of the fastest-growing communities in Illinois. At nearly 700,000, the Asian American Pacific Islander community in Illinois is a diverse population, and with a 53% increase in voter registration in the last decade, increasingly one with the power to shape elections.

Comcast’s gesture for low-income families BY A STAFF WRITER

A S H I N G TO N , D . C . Comcast Corporation’s Internet Essentials, its acclaimed national broadband adoption program for low-income families, will continue indefinitely, beyond its initial three-year commitment. Comcast’s executive vice-president David Cohen also announced more than $1 million in grants to dozens of non-profit organizations across the country to create Internet Essentials Learning Zones. The grants are part of a multi-faceted Gold Medal Recognition Program for communities that have done the most to help close the digital divide. In addition to the grants, Internet Essentials-eligible families in the Gold Medal-recognized communities who are not currently customers can receive six months of complimentary Internet service if they apply

for the program by March 18. In just two and a half years, the groundbreaking initiative has connected more than 1.2 million low-income Americans, or 300,000 families, to broadband Internet at home. Cohen said that the company had joined President Obama’s call to action for helping to realize his ConnectED educational goals by announcing an extension and enhancement of its multi-year commitment to close the digital divide. The grants made through the Gold Medal Recognition Program will be used to create Internet Essentials Learning Zones.

These networks of non-profit partners will work together to enhance public Internet access and increase family-focused digital literacy training. They will be established in communities in Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Fresno, Miami, and Seattle, among others. Since 2011, Comcast has invested more than $165 million in cash and in-kind support to fund digital literacy initiatives nationally. The 15 Gold Medal recognized communities that will create Internet Essentials Learning Zones include: Adams County, Colo.; Atlanta, Ga.; Aurora, Colo.; Chicago, Ill.; Cicero-Berwyn, Ill.; Collier, Fla.; Denver, Colo.; Elk Grove, Calif.; Fresno, Calif.; Miami, Fla.; Palm Beach, Fla.; Pasadena, Texas; Seattle, Wash.; St. Paul, Minn.; and Tacoma, Wash. Comcast is also recognizing five “most improved” communities that are eligible to participate in the two-week, complimentary service opportunity. These include: Baltimore, Md.; Lee, Fla.; Philadelphia, Pa.; San Francisco; and Stockton, Calif.

unlawful prescriptions for narcotic drugs in Schedules II-V, including oxycontin and oxycondone, which were resold on the street market. Evidence also demonstrated that Khunt, a pharmacist in Patel’s organization, billed Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurers for expensive medications he never dispensed to patients. He also knowingly filled prescriptions for scheduled controlled substances such as vicodin that were never intended for the patients, but which were resold by marketers on the street market. The evidence showed that Thoran was a marketer who recruited patients who were seen by cooperating doctors or clinics. After unlawful prescriptions for controlled substances were written and filled at the pharmacies, Thoran would take possession of the controlled drugs in order to sell them on the street market, the government asserted. These defendants are three of the 39 individuals who have been charged with offenses relating to their involvement with Patel’s pharmacy network. All but three of the defendants have now been convicted of felonies arising out of their involvement with Patel; 24 of those defendants entered guilty pleas, and 12 have been convicted after trial.

ome 600,000 people die every year due to the complications of venous insufficiency. Varicose veins and leg pain are, indeed, not just cosmetic problems but can be a serious medical condition that can lead to life-threatening complications. Well, it’s time to eliminate painful, unsightly varicose veins, skin changes or even ulcers with the Endo-Venous Laser Therapy (EVLT). The EVLT has many advantages providing relief of symptoms and leg pain. The 15-minute, non-surgical procedure with no downtime is performed at the clinic without general anesthesia and requires no hospitalization required. What’s more, the patient can resume normal activities right away. The ELVT at USA Vein Clinic is covered by Medicare and most insurance plans. Doctors say varicose veins can start out as a seemingly small problem, but if left untreated, it can become much more serious. Complications of varicose veins may include ulcers. These may form on the skin near the affected veins, particularly near the ankles.

They are caused by fluid build-up in the dysfunctional veins, and can be extremely painful.Dysfunctional veins can also increase the risk of blood clots. Patients may experience a swelling in the leg, which may indicate a blood clot. If left untreated, these clots can travel through the bloodstream and lodge near the heart or lungs, causing potentially life-threatening health problems. In other words, if you would like to receive vein treatments or would like to get a diagnosis, simply schedule an appointment with USA Vein Clinics (www.USAVeinClinics.com) by calling 847-999-4756

Connecticut man of Indian origin pleaded guilty to defrauding financial institutions through an elaborate mortgage fraud scheme involving dozens of properties in Fairfield County. Mohammed N. Islam, also known as “Tanveer,” 38, of Trumbull, Conn., waived his right to indictment and pleaded guilty on March 12, before U.S. Magistrate Judge Leslie G. Foschio in Bridgeport, Conn. According to a release from the office of the U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut, through his scheme, lenders suffered losses of more than $7 million. He is scheduled to be sentenced by Chief U.S. District Judge Janet C. Hall on June 4, 2014, and faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 30 years. Court papers revealed that between 2006 and 2013, Islam fraudulently purchased numerous single and multi-family properties, primarily in Bridgeport and Stamford using straw buyers and providing false information to mortgage lenders, including false verifications of mortgage applicants’ income, false verifications of down payments for real estate transactions and false Housing and Urban Development forms.

‘HONESTY IS NOT appreciated here’ A lot of what she says is often lost in translation, feels Sonam Kapoor who vows to be careful with her words SUBHASH K. JHA, MUMBAI

C

arefree actor Sonam Kapoor has come to learn that she needs to be “careful” with her words in an industry where statements can be “twisted and distorted”. Sonam’s father Anil Kapoor had recently said that Sonam’s bikini shot would get Bewakoofiyan a good opening. Refuting this, the actress said: “My father never said that. All that I said at a press meet was that my father feels the film would get a good opening. That statement found itself bonding with the bikini in the newspaper headlines. “I’ve realized I have to be very careful in what I say. I speak my heart out. Such honesty is not appreciated in the film industry. Instead, it is twisted and distorted. A lot of what I say is lost in translation.” Actresses often credit the decision of wearing a bikini on screen to the “demand of the script” or the director, but Sonam Kapoor says it was her own decision to flaunt the two-piece garment in her forthcoming film Bewakoofiyaan. And she wasn’t tense about it. “It wasn’t the producer Aditya Chopra or the director Nupur Asthana’s idea that I wear a bikini. In fact, the director suggested a

Kareena’s literary dreams MUMBAI: Kareena Kapoor, who is reading a lot nowadays, may follow in her elder sister and actress Karishma's footsteps and write a book. She was speaking at the launch function of nutritionist and diet expert Rujuta Diwekar’s third book — Don’t lose out, work out. When asked if she would like to write a film story or a book someday, Kareena said: “I don’t know about a film story, but maybe a book at some point. I haven’t even thought about it but books feel good.” “I have started reading a lot and books open up your imagination more than a film. So, someday I might write a book but I don't know about what. I have written one foreword for Rujuta, so I have a flair for writing but a book, I don't know.”

Confirming his full-throttle plans for the show’s season two, Anil said: “My entire team is into preproduction. Only my own dates need to be worked out. I am in a bit of a fix.” Last year, Anil is said to have refused all movie offers to focus on 24. This year, the movie offers have piled up, but Anil is in the mood for the TV show. “There are quite a number of tempting film offers. But I haven’t said yes to them as yet. I need to work out my dates for season two of 24,” the actor said.

in a James Bond film or Bipasha Basu in Dhoom making a splash. “The bikini blends naturally into the scene. And I am very happy to be wearing one. Having a female director around helped. But I wasn’t really tense about wearing a bikini,” she said.

MUMBAI: Actor-filmmaker Aamir Khan, who turned 49 on March 14, is happy with the way his Bollywood career shaped up last year courtesy Dhoom 3. He has planned to dedicate all his time in 2014 to his social issue-based TV show Satyamev Jayate. Besides one Hindi movie, Rajkumar Hirani’s Peekay, which is slated for release on Christmas, Aamir has no other film lined up. Talking to reporters at his residence, where he celebrates his

birthday with media persons every year, Aamir said: “Last year was great. I was happy with the success of Dhoom 3, and I was glad that all our hard work paid off.” “This year, I am dedicating all my time to Satyamev Jayate. Only Raju’s Peekay will release towards the end, but there’s no other film. So, my whole year is for the show.” Satyamev Jayate is a platform where Aamir brings socially relevant issues to the fore and discusses startling facts about them.

ometimes, love just ain’t enough. So there we have two people in love. The pampered but not spoilt bureaucrat’s daughter Mayera and her lover beau Mohit whose upward mobility is frozen by an employment meltdown in his airline organization (spicy allusion to the Kingfisher crisis, yes?) It’s Delhi’s noveau riche Gurgaon world bathed in cosmetic conceit. Sonam Kapoor and Ayushmann Khurrana blend into this gleaming kingdom’s excesses effortlessly. The two of them are so good as a couple, imagining them apart for even a portion of the bitterness that bites into the narrative during the second-half becomes unbearable.

Debutant director Nupur Asthana’s film is a bright scrambled world of wealth, luxury and the yuppy club’s unstated desperation to move up the corporate

ladder. It is also, by its very definition, a ridiculously self-important delusional world. Miraculously this film with its gleaming polished surfaces nei-

ther gasps nor laughs at the ignobility of upward mobility. Habib Faisal’s writing is smart and amiable, crowded with quaint colloquialisms culled from the capital youngster’s language. The writing also surprises itself by becoming inwardly-drawn and introspective at the most unexpected moments. Ayushmann looks like the guy next-door who wouldn’t mind pulling a few strings to float higher than the level allotted to him by fate. Of course it helps Ayushmann that he has Rishi Kapoor to play his girlfriend’s hawk-like father. Rishi’s character of the IAS officer on the verge of retirement is brilliantly written. — Subhash K.Jha

I think you have to give credit to the boys also. “The films make about `200 or `300 crore and it has a lot to do with boys. We (actresses) haven’t made that dent into the box office as females as boys have”. “Yes, there is a huge disparity in terms of remuneration, but there is also a big disparity in the kind of money that has been brought back by female actors so far. Where the hell Malaysian airliner has vanished? Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 with 239 people on board disappears after taking off from Kuala Lumpur; search is on IANS, KUALA LUMPUR

T

he mystery behind the missing Malaysia Airlines plane continued to dodge the multinational search operation for the fifth day on March 12 as Malaysia’s air force chief denied reports that radar had detected the plane over the Strait of Malacca. “I wish to state that I did not make any such statements,” Xinhua cited Gen. Rodzali Daud as saying in a statement. But he said the air force has not ruled out the possibility that the Beijing-bound aircraft had turned back before it vanished from the radar. The belief resulted in the search area being widened to the vicinity of the waters off the west

coast of Malaysia, he said. Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 with 239 people on board vanished without a trace about an hour after taking off from Kuala Lumpur early Saturday. The Boeing 777-200ER was presumed to have crashed off the Vietnamese coast into the South China Sea. The plane took off from Kuala Lumpur at 12.41 a.m. on March 8

and was due to land in Beijing at 6.30 a.m. the same day. The 227 passengers on the flight included five Indians, 154 Chinese and 38 Malaysians. Contact with the plane was lost along with its radar signal at 1.40 a.m. Saturday when it was flying over the Ho Chi Minh air traffic control area in Vietnam. An international terrorism

probe triggered by two Iranians boarding the missing plane with stolen passports has not finished, with John Brennan, director of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), saying on March 11 the possibility of a terror link could not be ruled out. Asked if the agency could rule out a terror link in the case, the CIA head said: “No, we’re not ruling it out. Not at all.” Interpol Secretary General Ronald Noble said that it appeared increasingly certain the two Iranians, Seyed Mohammed Reza Delavar and Pouria Nourmohammadi, were probably not terrorists, but illegal migrants seeking a new life in Europe. Echoing Noble’s statement, Khalid Abu Bakar, Malaysia’s national police chief, also said authorities believed that Nourmohammadi is not likely to be a member of any terrorist group, and that he was trying to migrate to Germany. Even as over 10 countries are scouring the waters around Flight MH370’s last known location, more countries like India, Japan and France have joined the massive search and rescue.

Search for plane on at Andaman sea KUALA LUMPUR: Search and rescue teams have been moved to the Andaman Sea to the south of Thailand to continue the search for a Malaysia Airlines plane that went missing on March 8, an official said here on March 12. Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Shahidan Kassim said the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) had widened the area of its operations in the hope of finding clues that may lead to the discovery of the missing plane. Earlier on March 12, Malaysia’s air force chief denied reports that radar had detected the plane over the Strait of Malacca.

Art of Living’s centre destroyed in Pakistan

Ravi Shankar had visited Islamabad in 2012 and inaugurated the centre. IANS, ISLAMABAD

T

he Art of Living (AoL) centre near Pakistan’s capital Islamabad has been vandalized by unidentified gunmen, the city-based humanitarian and educational non-government organization said on March 9. “Around 15 gunmen entered the centre at Bani Gala on the outskirts of Islamabad on March 8 and vandalized it after tying up the security guards to trees in the complex,” the NGO said in a statement here. “Two cars with around eight men came inside and tied two guards. They hit the guards on the head and legs. They burned four rooms com-

pletely and there is petrol in other rooms”. She said that when people of nearby areas came and made noise, the miscreants fled. Ravi Shankar had visited Pakistan in 2012 and inaugurated the centre for his Art of Living movement. He had also offered to hold talks with the Taliban to bring in peace in the region, saying it would help foster understanding among people with divergent views. “I am ready to go and talk to the Taliban. I want to talk to them, understand them and give them my opinion. So we can definitely make a difference. We should try it again and again even if we have to try it 100 times,” Shankar had said.

Pak PM orders aid for drought-hit area ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on March 10 announced a Pakistani `1 billion aid package for the droughtaffected people of Tharparkar district in Sindh province. Sharif made the announcement during a briefing by the district administration to the prime minister on the situation in Tharparkar, Dawn online reported. Sharif said steps should be taken to prevent a similar situation from occurring in the future and wondered if the situation in Tharparkar and Cholistan desert was similar then how come there was no famine in Cholistan. The briefing was also attended by patron-in-chief of Pakistan Peoples Party Bilawal Zardari, Chief Minister of Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah, former provincial chief minister belonging to the district A.G.Rahim, provincial Information Minister Sharjeel Memon and several others.

Maldives Parliament protests removal MALE: The sentencing and deposing of Maldives Elections Commissioner Fuad Thaufeeq is unlawful and without any proper procedures, Parliament Speaker Abdullah Shahid and Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim said in a joint statement, media reported. The statement was issued on March 10, after the speaker and deputy speaker wrote a letter to President Abdulla Yameen, Chief Justice Ahmed Faiz and Attorney General Mohamed Anil that the

Supreme Court’s verdict against the elections commissioner was issued unlawfully, Haveeru news online reported. According to the Parliament secretariat, the two had come to the conclusion after reviewing the court’s verdict from a legal perspective. The Supreme Court issued a suspended sixmonth prison sentence to Thaufeeg, and sacked him and his deputy. The prison sentence has been suspended for three years, according to Xinhua.

Sri Lanka defiant on human rights violations COLOMBO: Sri Lanka won’t be bothered by criticism on the human rights front, President Mahinda Rajapaksa has said, as he dubbed the Sri Lankans critical of his regime as “tale carriers”. Recounting the challenges Sri Lanka faced during the three-decade war against the Tamil Tigers that ended in 2009, Rajapaksa said the numerous largescale infrastructure projects in the erstwhile war zone were aimed at “winning the hearts and

the minds of the people”, Xinhua reported. He was referring to the third U.S.-backed resolution before the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) calling for greater reconciliation in post-war Sri Lanka. Rajapaksa insisted that his development strategy was indeed aimed at bringing people of different communities together. The U.S.-led resolution accuses Sri Lanka of failing to implement adequate reconciliation measures and investigate allegations of war crimes.

Andhra to watch clash of two actor brothers While Chiranjeevi is leading the Congress poll campaign, his brother Pawan Kalyan has floated a new political party MOHAMMED SHAFEEQ, HYDERABAD

T

he elections in Andhra Pradesh will witness an interesting clash between two popular brothers of Telugu cinema. K. Chiranjeevi, who is leading the poll campaign of the Congress party in Seemandhra or residuary Andhra Pradesh, will come face to face with his younger brother Pawan Kalyan, who floated a new political party on March 14 with a call to bury the Congress in both Seemandhra and Telangana. If Chiranjeevi had formed Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) eight months before 2009 elections, his brother has floated Jana Sena less than two months before simultaneous polls to the assembly and the Lok Sabha. Andhra Pradesh will be formally split into two states in June but the Congress and other parties have already formed separate committees. Though Pawan was not clear whether he and his party will con-

test the elections, he vowed to ensure that Congress lose in every constituency. Addressing thousands of his fans here Friday night, he gave a call ‘Congress hatao, desh bachao’ (Remove the Congress, save the nation). Jana Sena is the second party to emerge in the aftermath of the southern state’s division. Kiran

Kejriwal’s Bangalore road show draws curious crowds

IANS, BANGALORE

A

am Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal began his road show last weekend to campaign for his party’s candidates contesting the general elections April 17 across Karnataka. “Kejriwal’s maiden road show in the city is drawing curious crowds and enthusiastic youth, including many who are volunteering to canvas for our candidates in the poll fray from the three Lok Sabha seats in the city,” AAP spokesman Rohit Ranjan told IANS here. Kick-starting the road show from Hebbal in northwest suburb , Kejriwal’s cavalcade passed through localities such as Ganganagar, R T Nagar, Jayamahal,

Cantonment and Queens Road in the city centre by noon.Flanked by the party’s candidates — former Infosys honcho V. Balakrishnan (Bangalore Central), Nina Nayak (Bangalore South), Babu Mathew (Bangalore North) as well as party’s state unit convener Pritvi Reddy in a maroon multi-utility vehicle with open rooftop, Kejriwal greeted and waved to the people who stood on both sides of the roads. Though the AAP convey stuck to the routes and thoroughfares cleared by the traffic police, its slow movement and gathering of people at signal junctions and cross-roads enroute caused grid lock as vehicular movement had to be diverted and restricted to ease the situation.

Kumar Reddy, who quit as chief minister and also resigned from Congress party to protest the state’s bifurcation, last week formed ‘Jai Samaikyandhra’. Though famous as ‘power star’, Pawan is no match to superstar Chiranjeevi in terms of popularity, the question in everybody’s mind is will he succeed where his eldest brother failed.

n a major jolt to Congress, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) has ruled out electoral alliance with the party for the forthcoming polls to Lok Sabha and state assembly. After saying a no to merger with Congress, the TRS has now refused to have an electoral truck with the Congress, dashing the last hopes of the party’s central leadership. Addressing TRS workers at the party headquarters and later talking to reporters, TRS chief K. Chandrasekhara Rao made it clear that there will be no poll

alliance with Congress. KCR, as Rao is popular among his supporters, said it was because of the attitude of Congress leaders that his party had to take this decision. He held central leaders Jairam Ramesh and Digvijaya Singh responsible. “What was the betrayal?” he asked while referring to the statement by Digvijaya Singh that TRS betrayed by refusing to merge even after formation of Telangana state. The TRS chief reiterated that he had offered to merge his party with the Congress if separate Telangana state is created without any conditions.

BJP sews up front with DMDK, MDMK, PMK in Tamil Nadu CHENNAI: The BJP on March 15 finalized its alliance formation in Tamil Nadu with DMDK, MDMK, PMK and two other small parties, said a party official. The alliance formation was on the verge of breaking up with the actorturned-politician A.Vijayakant’s DMDK unilaterally announced its candidates for five Lok Sabha constituencies on March 14 and he went on the campaign trail on March 14, upsetting the BJP. “At one point we were ready say bye to the DMDK,” a Bharatiya Janata Party leader told IANS. The Bharatiya Janata Party in-charge for Tamil Nadu, it is learnt, had even told DMDK’s top officials to announce the party’s candidates for all the 39 seats in the state. According to the BJP official, DMDK has been allotted 14 seats, the BJP and PMK eight each, the MDMK seven and one each for two minor parties. A BJP official said perhaps this is the first time in state a strong alliance against AIADMK and DMK has been formed with a national party. The change of scene was also reflected at the ground level with Vijayakant at an election rally said: “Modi should become the prime minister if India is to become a super power.” — IANS

Murder, scam, green row spice up Kerala elections SANU GEORGE, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

A

sensational political murder, a multi-million rupee solar scam and a green controversy — electoral issues clearly aren’t in short supply in Kerala, which is headed for one of the most keenly contested elections on April 10. The three issues are likely to occupy the mindspace of the voters, even as the process of filing nominations began on March 15. All the three issues — the T.P.murder case, the solar scam and the contentious Kasturirangan

report — are expected to be highlighted all over the media and in the thousands of street corner meetings during the campaign phase in the southern state that sends 20 parliamentarians to the Lok Sabha. And with Chief Minister Oommen Chandy already declaring that the elections will be a referendum of his government, the lines have already been drawn. For the next three and a half weeks, it’s expected to be a fight to the finish between the Congressled United Democratic Front (UDF) and the CPI-M led Left Democratic Front (LDF).

Priyanka walks the ramp for Neeta Lulla MUMBAI: Priyanka Chopra turned showstopper on March15 for designer Neeta Lulla, who displayed her Indo-western collections at LFW Summer/Resort 2014 here. Talking about Priyanka’s attire, Neeta Lulla said: “Priyanka is wearing a kaftan which is very stylish and colorful. It was wonderful to have Priyanka as my muse. She carried it off really well. My collections had bright monochromatic colors with their tints inspired from the rain forest.” Neeta’s collection was inspired by Aztec motifs with Indian badla work. Playing well with silk and satin, Neeta displayed her fashion line which was a blend of Indian and Western attire. Priyanka dazzled on the ramp donning off white kaftan with knee length cuts from both the sides. Priyanka says she is always scared to walk the ramp. “Walking on the ramp scares me... I get very nervous and I am the happiest when it gets over. This outfit is very comfortable. Neeta is one of the iconic designers and it was wonderful to walk for her,” she said.

LFW: HIGH ON STYLE

The fashion event was high on style quotient with many designers experimenting with flower motifs and bold prints IANS, MUMBAI

T

he Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) summer-resort 2014 was high on style quotient with many designers seen experimenting with flower motifs and bold prints in their collection. Anushka Khanna’s collection called “Boom, Boom, Bloom,” made great fashionable music on the runway. The collection was dominated by the flower power motif that was seen on prints as well as embellishments. A photograph of her mother from the 1970s was the inspiration for the moody floral

hues. The designs varied from slips, pyjamas, belted kimono jackets to shorts, wrap dresses and sexy maxis. Strappy beaded tube dresses, sil-

Ashdeen Lilaowala’s collection had all the drama, excitement and exotic touches ver embroidered shifts, two toned kimono dresses, metallic skirt and shirt, cutwork shimmering wrap, a dazzling gold biker’s jacket with a khaki jersey gown and a silver striped one-sleeve orange creation

were impressive entries. Making their debut at LFW, designers Zhen and Mossi’s dazzling collection called “Poetry of a Tear” was an ethereal offering. The combination of French designer Mossi Traoré and talented Chinese creator Zhen has presented amazing collections around the world since they met in 2005 at the International School MOD’Art. Bringing retro oriental glamour inspired by the beautiful Hollywood actress Anna May Wong on ramp, Ashdeen Lilaowala’s collection aptly called “Orient Express” had all the drama, excitement and exotic touches.

C

reativity was on a high at the Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) summer-resort 2014 with young designers like Ken Ferns, Tanya Sharma, Sonaakshi Raaj and Subhika Davda giving interesting touches to their collections. Ferns has been inspired by unconventional themes in the past and this time, he took inspiration from Golden Age of the Azulejos form of Portuguese art of painted ceramic tiles. Actress Gauhar Khan walked the runway for the designer in printed corset worn with a long pencil skirt seductively slit at the back. Describing her clothes as classic with a sense of madness, Tanya Sharma’s collection at LFW was aptly called ‘Out of the Box’. Raaj brought red carpet glamour on the catwalk at LFW. Titled “A Broadway Affair”, the design was utterly sexy and totally exotic line. Making her debut at LFW, Davda presented her collection called ‘Roar’. The spotlight was on intricate hand crafted trendy accessories that recreated traditional Indian touches.

Meditation helps cancer patients Quality of sleep is important. A good night’s sleep prevents heart attacks, diabetes as well as road accidents, say doctors SREEPARNA CHAKRABARTY, NEW DELHI

H

ow you sleep is a major determinant of how well your heart functions. A new study carried out on cardiac patients at the Sir Gangaram Hospital here revealed that around 96 percent of patients who have cardiovascular problems have sleep apnea. Sleep apnea, which is clinically called Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS), is a type of disorder characterized by pauses in breathing or instances of shallow or infrequent breathing during sleep. “Lack of sleep is directly related to cardiac diseases,” Sanjay Manchanda, head of Sir Gangaram Hospital’s Department of Sleep Medicine, told IANS. “Quality of sleep is very important. A good night’s sleep prevents heart attacks, diabetes as well as road accidents.” The study, carried out by the hospital in collaboration

with Philips Healthcare, also proves the correlation between lack of sleep and heart ailments. It said that 58 percent of patients of cardiovascular disorders had severe sleep apnea and an estimated 85 percent of them were not aware that sleep apnea and cardiovascular diseases were correlated. Removing some of the myths associated with sleep apnea, the

study further said that there is no correlation between weight and extent of sleep apnea. Even thin patients can develop the disorder. The severity of sleep apnea in cardiac patients was found to increase with age, the study said. Sleep apnea involves cessation of airflow for 10 seconds or more during the night due to partial or full collapse of the airway.

They may genuinely feel offended and ask you to shut up as 50 percent of parents can not recognize the problem of overweight in their children, a research shows. “One out of two parents of a child with overweight in Central and Northern Europe perceived

their child’s weight as normal. In Southern Europe, the same figure was 75 percent,” the results showed. Four out of 10 parents of

children with overweight or obesity are even worried that their child will get too thin. “Many parents simply do not see the increase in growth, and are dependent on objective information from, for instance, child welfare centres and school health care to act,” explained Susann Regber from University of Gothenburg in Sweden. The European study comprised a total of 16,220 children in the ages 2-9.

Your week ahead... Aries The secret you have been keeping, or the invisible role you have been playing, was never truly complete. You will be given new information this week. From Friday, however, it is clear you have an epic decision to make.

Taurus Your progress with the group has been fits and starts since February and you have certainly had your patience tested. Despite this you are still ready for the next big wave of change, which makes this week so crucial.

Gemini April will be an exciting and challenging month as your social media, group project or old friendship takes you in a revolutionary new direction. The key is to respect other people’s need for space.

Cancer You also seem desperately tempted by a bold new move which would change your career, university life or nonprofit role. It’s an obvious answer to an awful lot of questions in your life, but you also need to canvass opinion.

Leo What was apparently final with your business, possessions on February will now change as one e-mail or phone call will alter the original story. You will make two of the year’s most important decisions near March 29th.

Virgo You would like to do something with (or about) your former, current or potential partner which can only be described as outrageous. At least, that is the way more conservative people would see it.

(March 17-23) Libra The state of play with your former or potential partner will be obvious after the Sun changes signs on Thursday 20th March and by Sunday 30th March you seem ready for a new beginning.

Scorpio You needed all this time ‘faffing about’ as the British put it so eloquently, to find out who and what matters most. Your children, godchildren or young relatives may be at the heart of this – or perhaps a relationship which brings them closer.

Sagittarius You need to find out what exactly you can get away with in terms of the house, flat, family, household or home town. That has not been possible for weeks, despite the obvious developments.

Capricorn You are the right person, in the right place, at the right time to make a lasting difference to the way things are with the family or your home town. Perhaps there are practical questions about what a house should achieve for you too.

Aquarius You have been speculating pretty publicly about what you plan to do in terms of your money, house, business, possessions or charity. So far others have been nodding, but what you hear or read this week will change the story.

Pisces You are ready to start a business, sell or make another revolutionary move which would permanently affect what you own. Please keep tracking your horoscope, as April requires special tactics. —Jessica Adams
