U

S lawmakers and officials have highlighted the importance of India-U.S. relationship, with the administration’s pointsperson for South Asia saying India’s rise is in US’ interest and a strong U.S. is in India’s interest.

The officials made the comments at a Congressional Reception organized by Senate Caucus on India and Indian Americans at the Capitol Hill recently to welcome Arun K. Singh on his taking over as India’s ambassador to the US. The event was hosted by senators Mark Warner and John Cornyn, Democratic and Republican co-chairs respective-

ly of the Caucus. Speaking at the event, Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, Nisha Biswal, noted that India’s rise is in US’ interest and a strong US is in India’s interest.

Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans is a bipartisan group of Senators founded way back in 2004.

Praising the leadership of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, she recapitulated the successful bilateral summits.

Warner reiterated his commitment to promoting India-US ties.

Cornyn highlighted the strong relationship between India and US being ‘world’s largest’ and ‘world’s oldest’ democracies which are bound by common values.

Thanking Warner and Cornyn for their leadership at the Senate Caucus on India and Indian Americans, Singh noted the important contributions made by the Caucus to bring the people and governments of the two countries closer.

He described the bipartisan support for India-US relations in the US Congress as a source of strength for the India-US strategic partnership that now spans almost all dimensions of human endeavor.

ndia and China are facing an exodus of their wealthiest citizens with tens of thousands of “high-net-worth individuals” (HNWIs) having left to seek greener pastures, according to a new report. As many as 61,000 Indian millionaires left the country and settled overseas in the last 14 years, second only to China which saw an exodus of 91,000, according to a report by consultancies New World Wealth and LIO Global.

France, Italy, Russia, Indonesia, South Africa and Egypt round out the top eight, according to the study cited by Time magazine.

The study, released this month, looked at immigration data from 2000 and 2014 indicating applications for a second citizenship or change of domicile (permanent resi-

dence). Britain — its capital city London, in particular — appears to be the most popular destination for the world’s rich to settle down in, followed by the US, Singapore, Australia and Hong Kong.

The report said Indians tend to move to countries like Australia and the United Arab Emirates, while Singapore and Hong Kong are popular destinations for China’s wealthy.

Despite the large-scale departure of millionaires, India still has the tenth largest number of millionaires at 226 800, while China stands fifth with 608,500.

The US tops the list with 4,105,000 millionaires.

Terror revisits Punjab, 7 dead

hree civilians and four security personnel, including a superintendent of police, were killed early July 27 when three heavilyarmed terrorists said to be from Pakistan went on a killing spree here, shattering two decades of calm in Punjab and sparking an 11-hour gun battle that left all three attackers dead.

The terrorists in military fatigues, stormed a police station complex in Dinanagar town in Gurdaspur district, adjoining Pakistan, taking security forces by surprise.

Dinanagar is located barely 15 km from the Pakistan border.

Punjab Director General of Police Sumedh Singh Saini told the media: “We (Punjab Police) engaged them and killed all three terrorists. We lost four security personnel. The terrorists were well armed with good firearms and good ammunition and were carrying GPS sets.”

CBI files 17th FIR in Vyapam case NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on July 28 registered the 17th FIR and ninth preliminary inquiry in connection with its ongoing probe into the Vyapam scam in Madhya Pradesh.

The First Information Report (FIR) was registered against 18 people relating to the alleged illegalities committed in the Forest Guard recruitment test conducted

by Vyapam in 2012.

The CBI registered the FIR under charges of cheating, criminal conspiracy, IT Act, Prevention of Corruption Act and the Madhya Pradesh Recognized Examination Act.

Security and intelligence agencies have tracked the global positioning system (GPS) sets, recovered from the terrorists, to Shakargarh area of Pakistan near the India-Pakistan

border. The GPS track indicated that the terrorists began their journey from the Pakistan side on July 26 and entered Indian territory.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh said: “If we are hit, we will give a befitting reply. We want peace with Pakistan but not at the cost of national honor.”

This was the first major terror attack in Punjab after the assassination of then chief minister Beant Singh on August 31, 1995 in Chandigarh, joint capital of Punjab and Haryana.

The final assault by the SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) team of Punjab Police on the complex ended with intermittent firing and grenade attacks from both sides.

Superintendent of Police Baljit Singh succumbed to injuries suffered in the gun battle between security forces and terrorists who were holed up in the complex, officials said. The dead included three civilians, one of whom was shot dead in a bus stand and two others who were killed in a hospital near the police complex. Three Home Guards in the complex were also killed.

The Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation said Gupta, 45, was being recognized for “his creative vision in transforming the culture of giving in India, his enterprising leadership in treating cloth as a sustainable development resource for the poor”.

Help India probe attack: Pak daily ISLAMABAD: A Pakistan newspaper has urged the government to extend “full cooperation” to India’s probe into Punjab’s terror attack “if facts point to a role of elements operating from Pakistani soil”.

The Dawn said in an editorial that some of the public mistrust in both countries could have been curbed if only India and Pakistan had followed up the decision their prime ministers took at Ufa, Russia.

If the National Security Advisers of the two countries had met and worked out an arrangement on how to address real-time incidents, the fallout of latest terror attack in Gurdaspur would have been different.

The Dawn said the terror attack “almost immediately became about Pakistan and the ever-present tensions between the two countries”.

But it noted that fortunately “only some Indian officials began to blame Pakistan and the ISI”.

Re-check minor rape victim for abortion: SC NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on July 28 asked the Ahmedabad civil hospital’s medical superintendent to set up a team of three gynecologist and a clinical psychologist to examine whether a 24-week pregnant 14-year-old rape victim can undergo risk-free abortion.

The SC said the team of doctors would also include gynecologist Riddhi Ketan Shukla who had earlier examined the victim and had said that the haemoglobin level of the girl was below optimum and this condition can be harmful to her during childbirth. The court said the team of doctors will decide if there was serious threat to her life if the baby is not aborted.

akub Abdul Razzak Memon, convicted in the March 12, 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, was hanged till death at Maharashtra’s Nagpur Central Jail on July 30 morning, officials said.

He was sent to the gallows — on his 54th birthday on July 27 — after several of his court appeals and clemency petitions were rejected by various courts, including the Bombay High Court, the Supreme

Court, the Maharashtra governor and the president of India.

Memon was hanged at 6.35 a.m.

A medical team at the jail pronounced him dead a short while later, at 7.01 a.m.

Later, his body was sent for an autopsy in the jail hospital by a medical team from a Nagpur government hospital, before being cleared for the last rites.

Initially, the jail authorities were not inclined to hand over the body and planned to perform the last

rites in an isolated spot in the jail campus. After the hanging, Memon’s brother Sulaiman submitted an application to the jail authorities, demanding handing over of the body to enable them perform the last rites in Mumbai.

The request was immediately processed and permission — with stringent conditions — was granted and the body handed over. It was taken to Nagpur airport and flowing in an air ambulance for the funeral rites.

Did the politicians, in a hasty maneuvre to negate the provisions of the 1894 land acquisition law, lose a sense of balance and tilted rather too heavily in favor of the cultivators?

T

he clumsily designated Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (Amendment) Bill has been the victim of clumsiness in forms other than its name.

To start with, these relate to the absence of a clear vision among politicians about the best way to achieve the objective of protecting farmers’ interests while advancing the cause of industrialization.

In a hasty maneuvre to negate the provisions of the 1894 land acquisition law, the politicians seemingly lost a sense of balance and tilted rather too heavily in favor of the cultivators.

Among those who noted the imbalance was the commerce minister in the Manmohan Singh government, Anand Sharma, who said that “insistence on the consent of 80 percent of affected families will seriously delay land acquisition and in many cases halt essential infrastructure projects”.

As Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has pointed out, this objection echoes the Narendra Modi government’s views. But the Congress has chosen to ignore what Sharma said two years ago because it runs counter to the party’s objective of throwing a spanner in Modi’s “Make in India” endeavours.

The Congress is well aware that if

the process of industrialization takes off, then the party can say goodbye to any immediate chance of returning to power. Hence, the aggressiveness with which the party’s vice president, Rahul Gandhi, has been opposing the proposed amendments to dilute the provisions on securing the consent of farmers, and declaring that he will not allow an inch of land to be acquired by the government or the industrialists.

The Congress’ crown prince does not seem to care that stalling industrialization will hurt the country in the long run since it will stop a large number of peasants to move from farms to factories and also be detri-

But it will not do to blame the cynicism of the Congress alone. As Modi once pointed out, when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs supported the land bill in 2013, they desisted from taking a longterm view of industrial growth presumably because such a stance would have enabled the BJP’s opponents to accuse it of being pro-cor-

porate, as Rahul Gandhi is doing today by alleging that the Modi government is “suit-boot ki sarkar”.

This one-sidedness has long been a feature of Indian politics - and also of the popular culture reflected in fiction and films - which propagates that the rich are evil while the poor are the repositories of all that is good in human beings.

In this respect, B.R. Ambedkar was in a league of his own when he described villages as “a den of ignorance, narrow mindedness and communalism”, echoing Karl Marx’s condemnation of the “idiocy of rural life”.

If the BJP is now taking a stand which is diametrically opposite to what it did in 2013, the reason is that the responsibility of governance has made it realize that employment generation via industrialization and economic reforms is the best way to lift millions out of poverty.

The Manmohan Singh government, too, had pursued this path, thereby leading to poverty reduction between 2005-06 and 2011-12 at the fastest ever rate in the country’s history because of “fast GDP growth”, as Arvind Subramanian, the present government’s chief economic adviser, said.

But any progress on these lines does not suit the opportunism of Rahul Gandhi and the Congress.

Hence, their opposition to reducing the percentage of farmers who have to agree to relinquish control over their lands from 80 percent.

NEW DELHI: When I heard about a month ago that there is an opinion in Delhi that favors toppling the AAP government, I argued with myself that this can’t be true. Delhi Police Commissioner’s B.S. Bassi’s increasingly aggressive tone vis-à-vis the AAP and its politics make me wonder if I may be wrong after all.

Unusually for a police officer supposedly bound by service rules, Bassi has been making comments which amount to political attacks against an elected government. I can’t recall the last time a police chief did this in any state.

As the chief minister, Arvind Kejriwal could have avoided the Hindi word he used in a TV interview to describe police personnel. Having said that, those of us born and raised in Delhi know it to be a part of a lexicon where such words exist.

But it is curious that Bassi has been commenting on what was a passing reference in a larger interview almost day after day while claiming that policemen are trained to ignore what is not palatable to them. Why talk about it then?

Bassi’s latest gem takes the cake.

He says it would be “very unfortunate” if Delhi Police come under the Delhi government. The reason? He feels “local vested interests” would come into play, and cites his experience in Goa and Puducherry.

This is truly bizarre. Since when have serving police officers begun arguing on modes of governance? Is it Bassi’s case that “local vested interests” — by which he must be referring to politicians — exist only in small states? What about Tamil Nadu? West Bengal? Andhra Pradesh? Uttar Pradesh? Bihar?

Gujarat? Maharashtra? Surely, vested interests are there everywhere.

Why not then place the police force in every state under the direct control of the central government?

And if “vested interests” are there in Goa, was Manohar Parrikar, a former chief minister and now India’s

defense minister, its part and parcel?

And has Parrikar ceased to be a “vested interest” after moving to Delhi? This simply defies logic. I have known senior and respected IPS officers who have held sensitive assignments and who, as friends, shared the various problems they faced. They too had their opinions as citizens — which Bassi is also entitled to. But I don’t remember the last time a serving police officer held forth views on what type of governance is better suited to a state.

In his latest interview, Bassi has also chosen to give unsolicited advice on what areas the AAP government should focus on! I simply cannot think of a situation — good or bad — when the police chief of Tamil Nadu tells Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, that too publicly, what she must do and how.

Bassi’s comments have an air of mystery about them, more so in the context of ongoing war between AAP govt and Lt. Guv Najeeb Jung.

Indeed, Bassi’s tone and tenor provide the first reason why Delhi Police should come under the control of the Delhi government, whether it is with the AAP, BJP or Congress.

One of his junior colleagues has even said that Kejriwal is fomenting disobedience in police. Something is surely brewing.

Pranoti Nagarkar-Israni, a mechanical engineer from the National University of Singapore, came up with a prototype for an automatic roti maker which won her the “Start-Up Singapore” competition in 2009.

She later floated a product design company called Zimplistic

he Indian women’s recurve archery team made a strong comeback to book a place in the 2016 Rio Olympics and later qualified for the final, but the men failed to advance after losing to Italy in a tie break at the World Championships here on July 28.

The women’s trio comprising Laxmi Rani, Rimil Buriuly and Deepika Kumari had their backs against the wall at 1-3 against Germany. But they held their nerve to edge back into the contest and finally sealed it with a 5-3 win to make it through to the last eight and make the cut to next year’s Olympics.

It was a tough ride, however, as the Germans refused to budge an inch. Elena Richter, Lisa Unruh and

Indian women’s team will now face Russia in the final on August 2.

Abdul Kalam, who rose from humble beginnings to become one of India’s leading scientists and later a hugely popular president, died in Shillong on July 27 evening after collapsing during a lecture at the IIM-Shillong, plunging the entire country in mourning. Kalam, who occupied Rashtrapati Bhavan in 2002-07 as India’s 11 president, breathed his last at 7.45 p.m. at the Bethany Hospital where he was rushed to from the IIM where he was delivering a lecture on “liveable planet”, officials said.

The 83-year-old Kalam, who had been lecturing at the IIM-Shillong since last year, reached the institute at 5.40 p.m. According to its director Amitabha De, he was taken to the guest house where he rested for a while and came to the lecture hall at 6.40 p.m. “Kalam must have barely spoken for five minutes when he suddenly collapsed,” De said, recalling the tragedy. “We rushed him to the hospital by 7 p.m. where he passed away.”

president at that time decided to confer an honorary doctor of engineering degree on Kalam. David Johnston went with me to New Delhi to meet Kalam and came back so impressed by the late president that his University of Waterloo decided to honor Kalam.”

Deeply saddened by the death of his great friend, Lakshmanan said: “Kalam was a true Mahatma. He was the Gandhi of the 21st century.

You won’t find a humbler man.”

Lakshmanan said, “Though Dr Kalam was a Muslim, his knowledge of Hindu philosophy was so deep that few people could match him...you could discuss duality, Carnatic music, anything...he could talk with so much depth. We both talked in Tamil and English.”

The University of Virginia study shows that not only are the biases decreasing, but the trend also appears to be accelerating.

“Many people have this gut feeling that our culture has changed,” said lead researcher Erin Westgate, a doctoral psychology student at the University of Virginia.

“We wondered whether people’s attitudes were really changing, or if people today just feel more pressure to say they support lesbian and gay people,” Westgate added.

The study appeared online in the journal Collabra, a new multidisciplinary journal from the University

of California Open Press.

Building on previous research on self-reported attitudes, Westgate and co-authors analysed data collected from more than half a million people between 2006 through 2013.

eople who are in their 50s and are “successful agers” healthy, active, sociable and well off - are more at the risk of harmful drinking than their less successful peers, researchers have warned.

Harmful drinking is a “middleclass phenomenon” that may be a hidden health and social problem in otherwise successful older people, they added.

“We can sketch the problem of harmful drinking among people aged 50 or over as a ‘middle class phenomenon’. These are healthy people with higher income, high-

“The results show that the current group of over 50s may be carrying on levels of higher consumption, developed in their younger years, in later life,” the researchers concluded.

Vikram Amar is Dean of Illinois Law School

BY A STAFF WRITER HAMPAIGN, IL -- Vikram Amar, senior associate dean for academic affairs and a professor of law at the University of California at Davis School of Law, will take over as dean of the University of Illinois College of Law on August 16.

The college’s 13th dean and the Iwan Foundation Professor of Law replaces Bruce Smith who was dean from 2009 to 2014,.

Amar (52) says his experience as an upper-level law school administrator should serve him well.

“For more than seven years as associate dean, I was deeply involved in virtually every aspect of law school operations – an experience that helped prepare me to succeed as the dean at Illinois,” he said.

He called it a privilege to lead the College of Law. Amar has focused on constitutional law, criminal and civil procedure, and remedies in his academic studies. In 2009, he wrote a book titled “Freedom of Speech: The First Amendment, Its Constitutional History and Contemporary Debate.”

He is a co-author of “Constitutional Law: Cases and Materials” and a number of volumes in the Wright & Miller Federal Practice and Procedure Treatise.

Indian gets $3-m grant IndiaFest is back in Humboldt Park for diabetes research

BY A STAFF WRITER OUSTON, TX-- An IndianAmerican scientist has been awarded a $3-million grant for working on treatment of diabetes by using a virus that can reduce glucose level in blood.

The research is based on human adenovirus 36, which causes obesity in humans and animals but also reduces blood sugar.

“It’s a little paradoxical, because you have an agent that is making an animal fatter, so you would expect their glucose levels to deteriorate,” said Dr Nikhil Dhurandhar, a professor and chairman of the Department of Nutritional Sciences at Texas Tech.

Dhurandhar, who received almost $3 million from Vital Health Interventions, said that he first noticed this phenomenon years ago in rodents while researching how the virus causes obesity.

Dhurandhar isolated a protein from the virus that is responsible for reducing blood sugar and tested it on diabetic cells and animals.

The experiment showed the protein improved diabetes.

The next step for Dhurandhar was to develop a drug that could be tested on humans and could be used to treat diabetes.

Dhurandhar, who is president of the Obesity Society, has been studying viral obesity for years, which he started when he was a physician in India focusing on patients with obesity.

He holds a number of patents for his work on ‘adenovirus 36’

CampusKnot, founded by Rahul Gopal, Hiten Patel, Perceus Mody and Katja Walter, is an online educational hub designed to increase collaboration among faculty and students, the Clarion-Ledger newspaper reported.

“We’re excited, but we’re scared at the same time,” said Gopal, a senior aerospace engineering major at MSU. “It’s funny, I guess, how I feel about it, but I’m looking forward to continuing to grow the company.”

CampusKnot, which is free to users, seeks to serve as a single website for students at MSU and other colleges and universities to easily reach teachers and classmates, besides offering space for faculty to post course syllabi and related academic material.

“The faculty will be the celebrities of this site,” Gopal said. “They can post access to knowledge for their ‘fans’.”

CampusKnot debuted in 2013.

Since then, creators spent two years refining their project at MSU’s Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation in the College of Business.

They won second-place in the centre’s 2013 startup competition and, in December, earned a $2,500-startup grant.

However, data on Asian American health are scarce, and many health disparities for this population remain understudied. This center fulfills a unique and critical need to improve the health of these underserved populations, which is in alignment with the Asian Health Coalition’s commitment to serving its communities.

As of June 30, Krishnamoorthi’s campaign had $596,250.54 cash on hand, according to a campaign statement.

The 8th District of Illinois encompasses parts of Cook, DuPage, Kane and Lake counties, which includes the northwest Chicago suburbs.

Comcast offers unlimited calls to 5 new countries Now, bring your foreign

BY A STAFF WRITER HILADELPHIA, PA -- Comcast has added five new countries to its most popular home phone plan, Xfinity Voice Unlimited, a change that comes at no additional cost and has the potential to save users hundreds of dollars each year.

These changes announced last week by the company allow customers to place unlimited calls from home or on the go to mobile and landline phones in Mexico, India, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, and South Korea, in addition to the six regions outside the United States already included.

The updated plan is now available in Comcast’s Central Division, which includes major markets like Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Miami, and Nashville.

This week onwards, it is also being offered in the company’s Northeast Division, which includes 14 states from Maine to Virginia and the District of Columbia, and it will be available to remaining Comcast customers by the end of August.

“Staying in touch with family and friends is important, regardless of geography.

But sometimes even the shortest phone conversations can get expensive,” said Patti

Americans spend billions of dollars on cell phone charges related to international calling and millions more on worldwide calling cards.

Data from the Federal Communications Commission shows that many of these calls go to India, Mexico, and Canada.

“We applaud Comcast’s decision to add India, China, Hong Kong, and Singapore to the Xfinity Voice Unlimited home phone plan. “Comcast’s expanded plan will help our community keep in touch and connected without spending on calling cards or incurring wireless charges.”

Comcast has more than 11 million phone customers, and nearly all of its residential phone customers subscribe to the Xfinity Voice Unlimited plan.

In addition to the five new countries just added, the plan already allows unlimited calling to Canada, Puerto Rico, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, US Virgin Islands, and American Samoa, totalling nearly half of the world’s population.

Xfinity Voice Unlimited also includes features like caller ID across multiple devices, three-way calling, and call waiting.

Unlimited international calling is just one way Xfinity Voice saves people money. After marriage, the newly-weds must apply for Adjustment of Status which will provide the foreign spouse with a work permit, authorization to freely travel in and out of the US and the status to permanently live in the US. There are many advantages to filing for a Fiancé Visa. If you are not sure about getting married to your foreign fiancé, this visa allows you to be together for 90 days in the US before you actually marry.

If things don’t work out as you planned, then your partner must return to his or her home country. Furthermore, the wait time for a Fiancé Visa is 6 to 7 months on average, which is shorter than the Marriage Visa (on average 11 to 12 months) as there are fewer documents to submit.

Student faces charges in StubHub swindle

BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK -- Sachin Kumar, an Indian American student at the University of Tampa in Florida, is facing a federal charge for use of a fictitious name that helped him dupe several people in a StubHub ticket sales scam.

Kumar, using the name Lester Salmon, in 2013 tricked people on the Internet sales platform StubHub and collected $49,121 in the process.

StubHub spent more than $172,000 in replacing the tickets for the victims.

Kumar, who was 19 at the time of the indiscretion, “has since accepted responsibility for his actions and agreed to pay restitution,” his lawyer Mark O’Brien said.

Kumar boasted of trips to India, Dubai, Chicago, Miami and his home state of New York, as well as purchases of a leather couch and 55-inch TV. Yet, he griped about tuition costs.

Kumar, who describes himself as a biology and pre-dental student, is expected back at the University of Tampa in August.

His lawyer says that others were involved in the scam, and Kumar only received a portion of the proceeds.

Hotelier pays $184k after duping workers

BY A STAFF WRITER ARGO, ND -- Fargo, North Dakota-based Indian American hotelier Bharat I Patel has paid more than $184,000 to settle a federal lawsuit claiming he cheated about 200 current and former workers out of wages at 15 hotels.

Patel forked out the money, but was allowed to deny any wrongdoing, according to the terms of the consent judgment.

US Department of Labor investigators found that Patel violated the Fair Labor Standards Act by misclassifying some employees as salaried exempt and failing to pay overtime and at least the minimum wage to front-desk clerks, housekeeping staff and other hotel employees.

BY A STAFF WRITER OLUMBUS, OH -- A stateof-the-art Sri Venkateswara Temple with an eight-feet granite statue of Lord Venkateswara will be constructed in the US city of Columbus in Ohio state.

It will be the second temple after the Bharatiya Hindu Temple that opened in the area in 1994.

According to Ganesh Vathyam, a spokesperson of the temple committee, the shrine will be spread over at least 20,000 square feet with a capacity to accommodate some 1,000 worshippers.

It will include an ornate, colourful towering entrance called “gopuram” and a brass or copper covered flagstaff called a “dwajasthambam”.

The committee is also planning to bring sculptors from India to build the temple which is likely to cost about $3 million.

“Our goal is to introduce this culture not only to our kids — because the reason we build temples is to let our future generations know the significance of the temple and the heritage — but also to introduce it to the other side of the world,” Vathyam said.

The temple had a four-day grand opening ceremony from July 30 to August 2 to enshrine Lord Venkateswara.

The celebrations brought three other deities into the temple “Ganesha, Garuda and Hanuman”.

Siddique, a 72-year-old professor in the Pennsylvania Public University’s Department of Languages and Literature, had in his FB posts denounced the ‘homo lobby’ and ‘dirty Jewish Zionist thugs,’ in addition to comparing Bill Cosby’s sexual assault victims to ‘sluts.’

He drew the ire of many for adamantly denying the Holocaust and has recently returned to the public spotlight for his comments about Bill Cosby and the women who have accused him of sexual assault.

“Most non-Muslims behave like he did and he also had lots of money. … What I can’t understand is why it took so long for the violated women to come out against him,” Siddique wrote on July 8.

Lincoln University condemned Siddique’s rantings but said no action would be taken due to the professor’s right to free speech.

“His latest activities, like his earlier writings, statements and activities, are an insult to women and other groups singled out,” the university said in a release.

“Dr. Siddique’s statements and assertions are his own, and they in no way represent the views of Lincoln University, its administration, faculty or students.”

Indian woman dies in ambulance mishap

BY A STAFF WRITER ISCATAWAY, NJ- A 22-year-old emergency medical technician (EMT) was killed in an ambulance accident in New Jersey on July 25, her last day on the job before starting medical school.

Hinal Patel, of Piscataway, died in the crash, which occurred at about 8 am as she and another EMT were heading to the scene of the car accident in East Brunswick, the police said. The Spotswood ambulance had its emergency lights and sirens operating at the time.

A car struck the ambulance, causing it to flip over and hit another car near the intersection of Ryder Lane and Cranbury Road in East Brunswick.

Julius Bellafronte, a witness to the crash, said it sounded “like an explosion.”

Patel was planning to start medical school soon after completing what was to be her last shift as an EMT, according to Sportswood EMS director Miriam Barbarise.

Patel graduated in May from Rutgers University where she studied cell biology and neuroscience. She had planned to return to Rutgers to attend the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

Mark Seube of Hamilton, who was driving the ambulance, and Kathleen Meade of East Brunswick, the driver of the car that struck the ambulance, were taken to a hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries.

Nadia Malik, 22, was missing for two weeks till her body was found in the passenger seat of a snow-covered Nissan Altima on 30th Street in Philadelphia on February 20, 2014.

Even as the cause of the death is still undetermined, the police said Malik was last seen with a man identified as her boyfriend, 26-year-old Bhupinder Singh.

Singh has not been charged with the crime.

Nadia’s brother, Khaled Malik, has said that he and his family are offering $50,000 to anyone who has information that would lead to the arrest of the ‘killer’.

Previously, the Maliks were offering $25,000.

Nadia and Singh had three children over the course of their seven-year relationship.

$25k MDRT grant for India Education Fund

BY A STAFF WRITER ALLAS, TX -- Indian American Kamal Daya of Dallas, Texas, secured a $25,000 grant from the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT) Foundation on behalf of the India Education Fund (IEF) of The Dallas Foundation.

The grant comes through MDRT’s Worldwide Grant Program.

Through its global grants, the MDRT Foundation is committed to building stronger families and communities around the globe. The foundation will award nearly $1 million in MDRT memberendorsed grants to more than 100 charitable organizations worldwide this year.

Daya, a 36-year MDRT member and the 2011 recipient of the Top Quality of Life Award from the MDRT Foundation, is the co-founder of IEF, along with his wife, Connie.

Created in 2009, the organization’s mission is to help improve the quality and scope of education for underprivileged and marginalized children in the poorest areas of India.

In order to achieve this goal, IEF has established three initiatives: building English language skills and competency, upgrading technology proficiency and providing coaching and mentoring services.

With this grant and the support of The Dallas Foundation, which serves as a link between donors and non-profit agencies in northern Texas, IEF will expand its programmatic scope into three new Indian institutions, impacting over 400 kids and an additional 2,000 in the years to come.

Indian jailed for 6.5 yrs for Medicare fraud

BY A STAFF WRITER AKLAND, CO -- The owner of two health care facilities in Detroit has been sentenced to 6 1/2 years in prison for his role in a $12.6-million Medicare and tax fraud scheme.

On March 13, Oakland County resident Mohammed Sadiq, 67, pleaded guilty to one count each of health care fraud and filing a false tax return.

In addition to a sentence of 80 months in prison, Sadiq was also ordered to pay $14.1 million in restitution by US District Judge Denise Page.

The announcement of the sentencing was made by Assistant Attorney General Leslie R. Caldwell of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, US Attorney Barbara L. McQuade, Paul Abbate, special agent in charge of the FBI Detroit field office and others.

According to authorities, Sadiq owned and directed operations at two home health care companies in Detroit. As part of his plea arrangement, Sadiq admitted that he, along with others, billed Medicare for services that were not provided.

He also admitted paying kickbacks to patient recruiters in order to obtain the information of Medicare beneficiaries, which he then used to bill for services that were not medically necessary or were not provided at all.

Sadiq also admitted that he created fake patient files to fool a federal auditor by making it appear as if home health services were provided and medically necessary.

I Eat slowly to feel fuller: Study LONDON: Go slow while eating your food as people who eat slowly feel fuller and think they have eaten more than those who eat quickly, shows research.

Previous studies have found that slow eaters have lower Body Mass Index (BMIs) than those who gobble down their morsels. But the reasons were not well understood.

To investigate whether how quickly we eat influences how hungry we feel afterwards, researchers from the University of Bristol fed volunteers Sainsbury's tomato soup through a tube into their mouths, Daily Mail reported.

This set-up prevented the researchers from judging visually how much soup had been eaten.

The participants then had 400ml of soup put into their mouths at two rates. One was at a fast rate of 11.8ml for two seconds, followed by a four second pause.

The other, the slow rate, was 5.4ml of soup for one second followed by a 10-second pause. The volunteers were then asked how full they felt at the end of the meal and two hours after.

Those who took the soup more slowly said they felt fuller than the fast eaters in both cases.

The Mumbai-based expert was talking on the sidelines of an inter-

national live/video operative workshop on prostate cancer here at the R.G.Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. He said it is
