n the holy month of Ramadan, a lot of seasonal products find their way to the streets of the capital city - but the sumptuous dates are exceptionally cherished. A small market in the bylanes of South Delhi’s Okhla and Batla house area sell the most exotic dates. Most Muslims who fast in the month of Ramadan prefer to end their fast with dates during iftar (time to end fast). Different varieties of dates imported from Middle Eastern countries — Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Palestine — to North African countries like Algeria and Tunisia are sold all across the market by street vendors and shopkeepers. WASHINGTON: Louisiana’s Indian American Governor Bobby Jindal, considered a long shot Republican presidential candidate, has criticized rival real estate mogul Donald Trump for his comments on immigrants. Jindal, the son of immigrants from India, who identifies himself as only “American” and supports a hawkish view of immigration policy, said on July 7 that he disagreed with Trump’s comments about illegal immigrants from Mexico being killers, rapists, and drug dealers. “I disagree with the comments. I see people as individuals, not members of ethnic or economic groups,” he told local NH1 newspaper in New Hampshire on a three-day swing through the first primary state. “But what I believe is that we do need to secure the border. LOS ANGELES: Singer Shakira and actor America Ferrera are the latest celebrities to speak out against Donald Trump’s recent “hateful and racist” comment about Mexican immigrants. While announcing his candidacy for America’s next presidential election last month, Trump delivered remarks that ended up echoing across Mexico. “They are bringing drugs. They are bringing crime. They’re rapists,” Trump said about Mexican immigrants, adding, “some, I assume, are good people.” While Shakira called out the billionaire on Twitter, Ferrera chose to pen a satiric letter published in a leading daily. In her tweet posted on July 7, the Dare songstress said: “This is a hateful and racist speech that attempts to divide a country that for years has promoted diversity and democracy.” Shakira followed up the tweet with footage of Trump’s speech alongside a message that read: “No one living in this century should stand behind so much ignorance.” While Shakira kept it short, Ferrera chose to write a lengthy letter dissing Trump and saying he would never won the presidential election.
as part of a comprehensive bill but we need to secure the border,” said Jindal. “Secondly, folks that want to come here should come legally, to learn English, to learn our values, to roll up their sleeves and get to work.” Jindal also took a shot at his rivals calling them a bunch of talkers. “I think we have a lot of talkers running. I think we need a doer, not a talker.” “We have a talker in the White House, it hasn’t gone very well,” he said of Democratic President Barack Obama. Jindal said he’s “the only candidate who has a detailed plan on how to get rid of Obamacare. Every Republican will talk about it, but it’s just a one-liner in their speech.”
histle-blower Web site WikiLeaks has published the names of more than 29 members of Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff ’s administration who were spied on by the U.S. National Security Agency at the start of her first term in office, which began in January 2011. The release of the list of phone numbers on July 4 linked to highlevel Brazilian officials comes just days after Rousseff, who was reelected to a second term late last year, and U.S. counterpart Barack Obama met in Washington to end bilateral tensions stemming from previous revelations about NSA eavesdropping on Brasilia. rime Minister Narendra Modi on July 4 greeted the people of U.S. on the occasion of their 239th Independence Day and said he was “extremely excited and confident about the renewed energy” in India-US ties. “Dearest sisters and brothers of U.S., on the occasion of Independence Day, I convey my warm wishes to you all. The ties between India and U.S. are time tested and connected by shared values. We are both vibrant democracies and remain very proud of our democratic framework,” he said in a message.

Modi added that he was “extremely excited and confident about the renewed energy in IndiaU.S. ties”. “Our economic ties are
strong and our cultural ties are vibrant. Last year I visited US and in January this year, President (Barack) Obama came to India and became the first ever president of US to join our Republic Day celebrations as the chief guest,” Modi said. He added: “Substantial ground was covered during both these visits as far as strengthening India-US ties are concerned.” “Strong India-US ties will benefit people of our nations and the world at large. I am optimistic that our relations are going to get even better in the times to come,” he said. The U.S. formally separated from Britain on July 4, 1776.

The list disclosed on July 4 by WikiLeaks said that in addition to Rousseff the NSA also spied on the communications of 29 other members of her administration, including her former chief of staff, Antonio Palocci, and erstwhile foreign minister, Luiz Alberto Figueiredo Machado. The document also said that members of Rousseff’s economic team and Brazil’s ambassadors to Germany, France, Switzerland, Belgium and the U.S. were targets of the wiretapping. “Our publication today shows the US has a long way to go to prove its dragnet surveillance on ‘friendly’ governments is over,” WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said in a statement.
‘No more US troops abroad to fight IS’ WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama said that local forces should be the main forces to fight the extremist group the Islamic State (IS) and currently there was no plan for his administration to send more troops abroad. Obama on July 6 told reporters after being briefed by U.S. military leadership on the status of US-led coalition campaign that to succeed in a long-term fight against the IS, “we have to develop local security forces that can sustain progress,” Xinhua reported.

Vyapam: Chouhan for CBI probe
As the rising number of suspicious deaths in the Vyapam scam cast aspersions over the credibility of the state govt, the Centre begins to feel the heat and nudges Chouhan to go for CBI probe
Financial bungling in Vyapam pre-dates Shivraj, RTI reveals

n a dramatic U-turn, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Tuesday announced he has recommended a CBI investigation into the Vyapam recruitment scam, but the Congress insisted he must resign for a fair probe. A day after Home Minister Rajnath Singh said the CBI need not probe the scandal that has reportedly claimed many lives and after Chouhan himself did not sound too enthusiastic about the CBI, the chief minister made a sudden volte-face. Addressing the media in Bhopal, a grim looking Chouhan said he was dispatching a letter to the Madhya Pradesh High Court requesting that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) be allowed to probe the scandal. “In a democracy, the ruler should be above suspicion,” he said. “There are questions in people’s minds. People want to know the truth. Questions in people’s minds have to be answered.

“I bow my head to people’s wishes. I am sending a request to the high court that the CBI should be allowed to investigate the case,” the veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader said. Now, Lalit Modi drops Rahul Gandhi’s name NEW DELHI: Former IPL chief Lalit Modi has alleged that Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and his brother-in-law Robert Vadra were beneficiaries during his tenure as IPL commissioner. Congress sources, however, dismissed the allegations and termed them baseless. Congress leader Ajay Maken said Lalit Modi was trying to help the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. Lalit Modi posted on Twitter a couple of his pictures with Rahul Gandhi and Robert Vadra, the son-in-law of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, in the same frame on July 3. Modi tweeted: “I hope @OfficeOfRG (office of Rahul Gandhi) informed @INCIndia that he was a beneficiary of my hospitality. He sat in my box.” The picture, which appears to be from an IPL match, also has Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, his wife Gauri Khan and actress Deepika Padukone along with others. Modi also asked if they (Rahul Gandhi and Vadra) had declared it to the Congress leadership. he tweeted, “My Q to #rahulgandhi and #robertvadra did you ever receive any hospitality from @lalitkmodi and did u declare it to @INCIndia #lalitgate.” Meanwhile, the Enforcement
CBI probe would help ward off the negative image the party was gaining on account of the Vyapam scam and other issues. Chouhan, however, made it clear that he had full faith in the investigation by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) so far, which he underlined was being monitored by the high court.
NEW DELHI: An RTI reply reveals that financial irregularities in the Madhya Pradesh professional examination board, better known as Vyapam, predate the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government in the state. In fact, these irregularities have been the norm for the Board since its inception in 1970. More than 1,000 financial irregularities were reported in Vyapam since 1970 to which objections were raised by the state’s audit teams, revealed the response to an RTI application filed by one of the whistleblowers of the scam, Ajay Dube. The audit of Vyapam was conducted by the Local Fund Audit under the MP government’s finance department. “So far we have been able to cull out data through RTI from the department of Vyapam till 2008. Directorate on July 6 issued summons asking Lalit Modi to appear for questioning within a fortnight, failing which the agency will take ‘appropriate action’. The summons were issued in a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, based on an FIR filed by the BCCI in Chennai in 2010 accusing him of misappropriation of Rs 4.70 billion in award of telecast rights and commercial airtime. The charges under PMLA will put the British authorities under pressure to repatriate Modi, who has continued his belligerent attack on leaders across party lines, dragging BJP MP Varun Gandhi, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley as well as Congress MP Rajeev Shukla into the controversy.
The RTI response to Dube revealed that 27 objections were raised by the audit team in Vyapam’s internal financial dealings in 1970-71, 61 in 1979-80, 129 in 1980-81, 65 in 1982-83, 48 in 1988-90, 40 each in 1997-98 and 2000-02, 61 in 2002-03, 53 in 2004-06, another 61 in 2006-07 and 34 in 2007-08. According to reports, the admission and recruitment scam involving politicians, senior officials and businessmen in Madhya Pradesh could be pegged at Rs.200 billion involving around 30,000 people. “So far only 20 percent (3,600) of the total accused have been booked. Although the government figure shows that the number of deaths linked to Vyapam scam is 33, we assume the death toll is about 60,” Paras Saklecha, another whistleblower of the scam, told IANS from Indore.

TIME TO MATCH PROMISE WITH SOME ACTION
The Modi government will have to match its performance with promise — not only on economic growth but also on transparency in official functioning AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
S
o, even as the economy is certified by the Reserve Bank governor to be on the mend, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promised to take the country into a digital age with more e-governance, it is the daily stumbles of ministers and mandarins that are attracting greater attention. While these missteps may be difficult to prevent, given the casual manner in which rules tend to be flouted by the rich and powerful, a prompt and decisive intervention from the highest levels will be an effective counter to the impression that the government is being overwhelmed by various problems. The prime minister’s decision to step into the rumpus caused by the deplaning of passengers in Leh, Ladakh, to accommodate VIPs is a sign that the norms are being tightened. But there has to be more such steps at a time when the various controversies range from la’affaire Lalit Modi to the mysterious deaths
of the accused and witnesses associated with a scam in Madhya Pradesh to the holding up of an international flight so that a member of a chief minister’s staff can fetch his passport from home or the non-submission of e-tenders (even as e-governance is being hailed) by a Maharashtra minister for the purchase of fire extinguishers. Collectively, the drip-drip of allegations can erode the government’s image. It will not be until the economy reaches a high plateau of an 89 percent growth rate, or the prime

Assam, West Bengal and elsewhere, apart from the various by-elections, may not always yield results in the BJP’s favor, thereby denting its confidence. Since the run-up to a general election is not the time to take what may be unpopular decisions, whatever the government has to do on the economic front has to be done now. If any “bitter medicine” is to be administered, as the prime minister said right at the beginning of his tenure, this is the time for it to be given. As is known, the poverty reduction under the Manmohan Singh government was the fastest in the
country’s history. This was stated by none other than the present government’s chief economic adviser, Arvind Subramanian. Notwithstanding this remarkable achievement, the Congress crashed to its worst defeat in its history simply because the many scams, big and small, undermined the party’s and the government’s credibility. If the Modi government wants to avoid a similar outcome, it will have to match its performance with promise. And the promise is not only the one on economic growth but also on transparency in official functioning based on trust and credibility.
Holistic approach needed for Smart Cities mission SUJAYA RATHI, NEW DELHI
W
ith the simultaneous launch of the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), Housing for All and the coveted Smart Cities Mission (SCM) on June 2 5, it was a landmark day in the evolution of India’s urban agenda. The message of convergence emerging from the common launch of all three programmes will hopefully be sustained in the future while implementing them. The Smart City guidelines seek the convergence of different schemes like AMRUT, Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM), National Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana (HRIDAY), Digital India, Skill Development, Housing for All, construction of
Museums funded by the culture department and other programmes connected with social infrastructure such as health, education and culture. SCM, with an outlay of Rs.480 billion ($7.5 billion), is expected to enhance the quality of life in 100 cities, which will be
identified over the next few months. Since the initial declaration of building Smart Cities in the BJP’s election manifesto in early 2014, the Modi government’s plans on this front have been taking shape slowly, and will need time to evolve.
The SCM guidelines highlight the need for a holistic approach to urban development. This will require an integration of physical, institutional, social and economic infrastructure. Thus emerges the need for a strategically articulated framework to address a city’s urban challenges, which will greatly aid this process of integration. This framework should focus on a more process-oriented path than a simple project-oriented path. The guidelines provided by the government do not mention a specific definition of Smart City. There are, however, four key imperatives that emerge from the guidelines along with various other perspectives on smart cities obtained from both academic literature and deliberations in India over the last 15 months. The first imperative is that a city needs to be sustainable in
order to be smart. This will mean that the interventions under the Smart Cities Mission need to align their goals, objectives and processes to the overarching principle of sustainability. The Draft Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) released by the United Nations can be a useful and handy reference. The key principles emerging from SDGs include ensuring well-being, equity, efficiency, and embedding foresight in all plans and actions. Adhering to these principles at all stages of all programmes will ensure consistency in the outcomes. The second imperative that emerges is the importance of imbibing the characteristics of good governance for achieving sustainability. For example, transparency, accountability, participation and consensus-building.

S
outh Carolina’s Indian American Governor Nikki Haley hailed the state Senate’s vote to remove the Confederate battle flag from the statehouse grounds three weeks after a white man shot dead nine African-Americans in a historic black church. Haley, a Republican, who took the lead in calling for the secessionist flag to be taken down after pictures emerged of the alleged shooter Dylan Roof holding a gun in one hand and waving the flag in the other, asked the House of Representatives to act swiftly and follow the Senate’s lead. The bill to remove the slavery era flag which has fluttered on the statehouse grounds for more than 50 years received 37-3 votes in the Republican majority Senate. India-born Bawa, an internationally recognized evolutionary ecologist and a distinguished professor of biology at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, was elected a fellow of the Londonbased society in April. Bawa joins former and current fellows such as Isaac Newton,

Faith leaders also gathered in the rotunda of the State House, singing “Amazing Grace” and encouraging individuals to find unity through faith. The State newspaper in Columbia reported that pro-Confederate flag robocalls urged voters last week to call their representatives and to tell them to “not stand with leftist fanatics who want to destroy the South we love”. “What’s next? This attack on our values is sick and un-American and it has to stop right here and right now in South Carolina,” the call said. According to a new CNN/ORC poll, 57 percent of Americans see the flag more as a symbol of Southern pride than as a symbol of racism, about the same as in 2000 when 59 percent said they viewed it as a symbol of pride. South Carolina lawmakers raised the Confederate emblem over the State House in 1961.
NEW YORK: Goldman Sachs’ former India-born director Rajat Gupta failed to get his insider-trading conviction tossed on the ground that he did not benefit from the alleged tips after a judge ruled it was “too little, too late”. Manhattan federal Judge Jed Rakoff rejected Gupta’s appeal to have his 2012 conviction overturned, saying a recent appeals court decision did not affect tippers like him, New York Post reported. Gupta and Galleon Group founder Raj Rajaratnam, to whom Gupta was accused of passing illegal tips about Goldman Sachs “were close business associates with a considerable history of exchanging financial favors”, Rakoff noted. Gupta is serving a two-year sentence at a prison in Massachusetts.

fter Greece failed to propose a fresh debt deal on July 7, the eurozone gave it until July 12 to present new proposals to secure a deal with creditors. On July 12, a meeting of all 28 members of the European Union (EU) will be held — a day after the new Greek proposals are expected to be discussed by the eurozone finance ministers. The Greek crisis came up for debate in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, on July 8. European Council President Donald Tusk told members of the European Parliament that there were only "four days left" to reach a final agreement, BBC reported. US Army plans to lay off 40,000 military posts WASHINGTON: The US Army is set to cut 40,000 military and 17,000 civilian posts, between 2015 and 2017, due to budget constraints, US media reported. Citing a senior official from the Department of Defense, CNN and USA Today reported on July 7 that the layoffs would be officially announced this week although Pentagon has been regularly reporting to Congress on the issue. This new wave of staff lay off would add to those already being carried out by the Pentagon for years to adapt to an increasingly tight budget. By the time the defense budget comes in 2017, more than 100,000 soldiers would have been laid off in five years. In 2012, the US Army had

EU Economy Commissioner Pierre Moscovici said Europe wanted to stop Greece falling out of the eurozone. "The Commission does not want a Grexit (Greece's exit from the eurozone). Grexit would be a terrible failure and we are fighting to avoid it," Moscovici said. Earlier, EU President JeanClaude Juncker said Grexit could not be ruled out but he did not want Greece to leave the eurozone. "We have a humanitarian plan, if needed," he added. Meanwhile, France's central bank chief on July 8 said Greece will descend into "riots and chaos" if no debt deal is found soon, media reported. "The Greek economy is on the edge of catastrophe. A deal must be made on Sunday because it will be too late after that and the consequences will be serious," he told a French radio.

"We should pray that such an option never arises, but if we need to use them (nuclear weapons) for our survival, we will," he said. P
rime Minister Narendra Modi on July 7 touched on the shared Islamic heritage of India and Central Asia, which, he said, has always rejected the forces of extremism, as he urged for boosting defense and security cooperation to defend the region’s peace and defeat terrorism and rising extremism. In his address at the Nazarbayev University in the Kazakh capital, Modi also said India’s engagement with Central Asia has been short of promise and potential and added that he is determined to change it with closer cooperation. Speaking on the shared heritage of India and Central Asia, Modi said the Islamic heritage of both India and Central Asia “is defined by the highest ideals of Islam — knowledge, piety, compassion and welfare. This is a heritage founded on the principle of love and devotion. And, it has always rejected the forces of extremism. “Today, this is an important source of strength that brings India and Central Asia together.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, Karim Massimov, in Astana, Kazakhstan on July 7.
He spoke of the close connection between the two sides through Bollywood, Sufi music, yoga and Hindi, adding: “It is the foundation of a relationship of hearts and emotions. And, it cannot be measured only by the scale of trade or the demands of states.” Speaking at length on terrorism and extremism, Modi said: “We
live at the frontier of instability. We live close to the crucible of extremism and terrorism. “We see terrorism spawned by nations and groups. Today, we also see cyber space become a platform without borders for terror to draw recruits to its cause. “From theatres of conflicts to the calm neighborhoods of distant
cities, terrorism has become a global challenge as never before.” Modi said India and Central Asia would combat terrorism through the “strength of our values and our commitment to humanism”. key pillar of India’s engagement with Central Asia”. In his media statement following the talks, Modi said both sides discussed steps to implement the contract signed earlier for supply of uranium from Uzbekistan. Modi said he briefed Karimov about the International North South Transport Corridor and proposed that Uzbekistan become a member. “I sought his support for India joining the Ashgabat Agreement” — a transport corridor that would link Central Asia to the seaports in the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. He also said both countries will also seek to work in the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
Modi said his five-nation tour of Central Asia reflects India’s resolve to start a new era in ties with the Central Asian republics. He said his visit to Uzbekistan underlines its importance for India, “not just in the context of this region, but also more broadly in Asia”. “I share President Karimov’s desire to raise the level of our economic engagement. I conveyed to him that there is a strong interest in Indian business to invest in Uzbekistan,” the Prime Minister further said. He said the Uzbek president was supportive of strengthening ongoing cooperation in the areas of agriculture, information technology and energy.
growth and a strategic location, he said: “So, I am here to start a new era in our relationship with Central Asia.A India is prepared to invest more in a new partnership of prosperity.” Pitching for boosting trade and connectivity with the land-locked region, he expressed hope that all of Central Asia would become members of the International North South Transport Corridor and said that India is keen to join the Ashgabat Agreement on trade and transit. He said India’s upgradation of Iran’s Chahbahar Port would open up routes into Central Asia. Both sides would work together in the sector of minerals, industry, pharma, engineering and small and medium industries, he said. He said India’s membership of Shanghai Cooperation Organization will deepen the regional partnership. He called for Central Asia to flourish and regain its central role in Eurasia. “From Europe to Asia, all nations must foster a climate of cooperation and collaboration, not competition and exclusion, in this region.”
Come invest in India: Modi ASTANA: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 7 urged Kazakhstan to participate in India’s “Make in India” initiative, Smart Cities and urban infrastructure programme to create a win-win partnership. Addressing CEOs of both countries at a business meet, Modi also praised Kazakhstan’s development and progress. He said Kazakhstan, despite being landlocked, has moved forward in development, which needs to be admired and praised. Citing the Satpayev oil block, in which India’s OVL is participating, Modi said the oil block began exploratory drilling on July 7. He proposed that Indian oil firms can invest with new technologies in Kazakhstan’s vast energy sector.

A delegation of state ministers and Chief Secretary I.Y.R. Krishna Rao met the president separately to complain against the attitude of the Telangana government on postbifurcation issues. They sought implementation of section 8 of Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act, which empowers governor to supervise law and order in Hyderabad, the joint capital of the two states. The delegation and later the chief secretary called on the president at Rashtrapathi Nilayam at Bolarum, where he is currently on a southern sojourn. The ministers led by Deputy Chief Minister K. E. offensive remarks against people of Andhra Pradesh being that regularly uttered by a number of public functionaries,” the chief secretary said in his memorandum to the president. Krishna Rao also brought to his notice certain incidents in which bureaucrats from Andhra were
insulted by Telangana government and police. He complained that Telangana is claiming most of the 142 institutions included in Schedule X of Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act based on their location in and around Hyderabad. The viewpoint of Andhra Pradesh is since they are built with the revenues of united Andhra Pradesh and their location either in Hyderabad or otherwise is a historical accident. The division of most of the assets and liabilities as envisaged in the act is based upon population ratio and the request of Andhra Pradesh government is to apply the same to these institutions. The matter is now pending before the Supreme Court but the Telangana government has taken over these institutions. Krishna Rao requested that “status quo ante” may be maintained as on June 2, 2014 with reference to Schedule-X institutions till the issue is decided by the central government or by the Supreme Court.

Strong growth in office rents has also pushed Bengaluru to 12th slot among the 20 top technologicallyrich cities around the world in JLL’s global office index and the city is estimated to add a whopping 12 million square feet office space over the next 18 months. “Bengaluru top scores in the city momentum index of 120 cities, ranking sixth in gross domestic product (GDP) growth,” he said.

By then, the kukur lebabdar tikka (succulent chicken tikka soaked in red curry) and the tabakh maaz that had arrived at the table also vanished. “Lamb and yogurt are an integral part of Kashmiri cuisine. Wazwan cuisine is a 36-dish meal course and more than 50 percent are lamb preparations. The dishes are served in a big plate,” Rehman said. The unique dish is the nadur yakhni (lotus stem in yogurt gravy flavored with cumin and mint powder). It was not only tasty but also fibrous, which health freaks can definitely go for. Non-vegetarians can go for rogan josh or the interesting gushtaba (minced lamb meatballs in yoghurt gravy) with Kashmiri maaz palao (lamb pilaf of the Valley). Indian IRS scammer gets 15 yrs
Hi India was first to expose fraud
zz Sahil Patel : Con Artist who robbed and terrorized millions and bilked more than $20 million sobbed in court. BY AJAI AGNIHOTRI
A
con man who swindled and threatened more than 600,000 people under the threat of Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in the past two years was sentenced to 15 years (175 months) in prison and three years of supervision on July 8 in the New York southern district. Sahil Patel, 36, of Tatamy, Pennsylvania, masterminded the multilayered India-based scam that scared mostly Indian American taxpayers into an extortion scheme, which bilked with a rough count of more than $20 million in two years. A typical call to a victim earned between $5,000 and $7,000. Often, the victim was pursued a second time and the losses were somewhere between $12,000 and $14,000. Neither the exact number of victims nor the amount lost was known as most of the victims had chosen not to report the matter to the police or the IRS. He started his crime in December 2011 through his arrest in December 2013. ‘Hi India’ was the first and only newspaper which broke the news in 2013 by revealing the scam, the smart swindling and its India connection. Sahil was charged with four counts of (1) conspiracy to commit impersonation of an officer or employee of the US IRS or FBI, (2) conspiracy to commit wire fraud, (3) conspiracy to commit extortion and (4) aggravated identity theft. The con man, who led hundreds of thousands Indian Americans up the garden path, sobbed in the court, apologized and blamed all his crimes on overuse of cocaine. He was ordered to forfeit $1 million acquired frequently. Sahil had specialized in getting personal information of victims and terrorizing them. His scam was methodical and had a multi-layered elaborate scheme to coin money. The telephone numbers, names and addresses were acquired, mainly of Indian Americans. The VOIP - internet phone such as magic jack were acquired in fakes names. Then English-speaking operators in Indian call centers were hired to impersonate IRS and FBI agents in phone calls to victims and threaten them with arrest and financial penalties if they didn’t send money using prepaid cards. After the victims bought the pre-paid money cards and gave their numbers to the swindlers on phone, the funds were immediately transferred to banks in the US opened by different people. These middlemen would withdraw the funds and were offered 5% to these as their commission for services. In his elaborate scheme, Sahil exploited desperate co-conspirators, especially women.
The scam was so profitable and easy to milk money out of victims that it spread to many such gangs in India. By July 6, 2015, the IRS had received around 600,000 reports of threatening calls and 9,000 to 12,000 more were adding every week. Phone scams have mushroomed in the US in the past few years. In most of the cases, the modus operandi was a similar script, a phone call to the victim from a number that showed Sheriff, 911, IRS or from US Immigration. The victims were coerced to send money to the gang through Green Dot or Western Union. The scammers relied on extensive research into victim’s background to back their plan. Armed with long lists of potential victims, referred to by Sahil and co-conspirators as ‘lead sheets’, those India- based call centers’ callers systematically placed thousands of calls to individuals in the US in the hopes of intimidating the call recipients into providing a payment to the co-conspirators. To mask the identity of Sahil and co-conspirators, the ring undertook several measures to anonymize itself, including by using anonymized voiceover-internet technology, which was subscribed under fraudulent names in order to give the appearance of being related to US law enforcement agencies. Several layers of wire transfers were used in order to conceal the destination and nature of the extorted payments. Using different people during the course of the phone call who pretended to be federal and law enforcement officials, the victims would be periodically given personal details, including passport and H-1 B or Green card details. The callers were also able to track the locality and stores nearby the victims, where the victim can go and buy money card. The caller most of the time directed to them to the stores expertly to various locations as the victim drove from one place to another to withdraw funds. In most of the cases, the calls lasted for many hours. The victim complied as he or she was paralyzed by the threat to be deported or to be sent to prison. Most of the time, the victims felt like hostage for hours and were traumatized for days and weeks even after paying the con men. The judgment sending down Sahil for 175 months was based on the seriousness of the crime and a deterrent to others still in this scheme of conning people. The prosecution and sentencing of Sahil has still not slowed down the calls, what with 10,000 additional calls/complaints occurring every week. The IRS calls it the largest impersonation scam in the tax agency’s history and that, too, being operated from another country. Prosecutors said that while the scam had touched people in nearly every state, the top five states for dollar losses through March were California (308 million), New York (1.3 million) and Texas (800,000), Florida (760,000) and Virginia (648,350). The US District Judge Alvin Hellerstein, who delivered the harsh verdict, noted that “The nature of this crime robbed people of their identities and their money in a way that causes people to feel they have been almost destroyed”. Though Sahil is now behind the bars, many more gangs are still operating, and H-1B visa and Green Card holders continue to get duped and will keep on getting duped till con men like Sahil are around. The state and federal governments need to pull up their socks and launch start an aggressive awareness drive to let residents know of the threat from such gangs as of Sahil. Members of Congress have also recommended for making spoofing of telephone calls a serious crime. The Anti-Spoofing Act of 2015 is set to target “caller ID spoofing”, a growing scheme in which the rip-off artists disguise their phone numbers to make it appear that they are calling from US government agencies, bank, police department, credit card company, utilities companies, pharmacy or hospitals.

MOTELIER FACES 5-YEAR JAIL FOR ROLE IN SEX TRAFFICKING BY A STAFF WRITER
N
EW ORLEANS, LA -- A 74-year-old Indian American motel owner, Kanu Patel, has pleaded guilty to benefiting financially from sex traffickers who beat women for prostitution in the rooms he rented out to them at inflated rates in New Orleans, Louisiana. Patel, who could face a maximum of five years in prison, ignored women’s screams for help as pimps beat them, according to court evidence. Patel pleaded guilty to one count of benefiting financially from trafficking in persons. Patel, who also went by names like ‘Kenny’ and ‘Pop’, acknowledged that in his role as the former owner of the motel, he regularly rented rooms to individuals that are charged as sex trafficking coconspirators in connection with this case. He admitted he knew they were pimps who forced and coerced women to engage in prostitution, according to evidence presented before the court. Patel admitted that although he never
personally recruited, groomed or coerced any of the victims, he benefited financially from the sex trafficking operation. Evidence has established that Patel charged the pimps and sex trafficking
co-conspirators higher rates than other motel guests and opened the motel’s gate to allow the women to bring customers back to the hotel. Patel learned that members of the sex

He did not report the activities of the people engaging in sex trafficking to the police as long as they paid their rent. “This defendant callously profited from a sex trafficking venture that used force, fraud and coercion to compel women to engage in commercial sex acts,” said Kenneth Allen Polite Jr., an attorney of the Eastern District of Louisiana. “These crimes often pass without detection, because victims live in fear of physical abuse, threats and other forms of coercion. Haldiram snacks not safe, says USFDA BY A STAFF WRITER
BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC -- The US Food and Drug Administration has rejected several snack imports made by Indian company Haldiram Snacks over concerns about the high levels of pesticides, mold and bacteria. The move comes as global food corporation Nestlé has been subjected to a nationwide ban in India of its Maggi noodles that allegedly tested for high levels of lead. The FDA initially found pesticides in Haldiram’s products in September 2014 and has since refused imports of the company’s products 86 times. Among the products rejected were Haldiram brand cookies, biscuits and wafers. A Haldiram spokesperson recently said that the company’s products are completely safe. He also noted that food safety standards were different in India and the US. “A pesticide that is permitted in India may not be allowed (in the US). And even if it is, they may not allow it in the same concentration as it is here,” he said. During the first five months of 2015, the FDA has reportedly rejected more snack imports from India than from any other country. The main reasons given are high pesticide levels and mold.

Staying connected-Dada Vaswani shows the way BY A STAFF WRITER AK BROOK, IL -- Dada J P Vaswani, spiritual leader and head of the Sadhu Vaswani Misison, addressed a diverse audience of more than 500 people on June 6, at the Drake Hotel, in Oak Brook, IL, a suburb of Chicago. He spoke on the topic, “Stay Connected,” and also conducted a Question & Answer session, addressing a variety of topics, including life after death, marriage, forgiveness, and the power of thought. Dada launched his talk by drawing attention to the growing epidemic of loneliness and said that the cause of this was that because so many of people are not spiritually connected. He offered several practical suggestions on how to stay connected to our spirituality, the first of which was to open and close the day with a prayer. Another recommendation Dada gave was to read some positive literature before going to bed. Dada also advised that to “stay connected” we should try to stay relaxed always and to avoid over work. “Remember, work is not the end of life. Work is only a means. Works purifies our antahkaran—the inner instrument,” he explained. “Do your work; it is your duty to do. Beyond that, give time to God.” To stay connected, Dada advised forgiving “even before forgiveness is asked. This is the

mark of the man who actually stays connected,” said Dada. “If you don’t forgive, you will lose your piece of mind, and if you lose your peace of mind, the connection breaks.” In addition, Dada suggested that “whatever be the work that you do…do it in the very best way that you can because it is your offering to the Lord. Give to the world the best that is in you, and the best will return to you.” Dada’s final practical suggestion is one that he calls us to again and again: help others. “Help as many as you can to lift the load on the rough road of life,” he urged. Following Dada’s talk, the mayor of Oak Brook, Dr. Gopal Lalmalani, moderated a Question & Answer session, which touched on a diversity of themes.
Dada guided one audience member on what to look for in a partner. “Is your partner a person of faith?” he asked. ”Secondly, is he a person of self-control—does he get irritated, does he get angry at the least excuse? Of this always be sure,” he advised. One audience member asked, “When will there be peace in the world?” To this, Dada answered simply, “When there will be peace in your hearts.” His response was met with enthusiastic applause. Dada brought his great sense of humor to his answers, as well. When one audience member asked, “How do I deal with liars?” Dada very seriously and matter-of-factly answered, “Consult a lawyer.” The response earned roars of laughter.

The significance of fasting It is clear that Allah does not want us to abstain from eating and drinking only during the fast. Rather, He wants us to refrain from evil deeds and vileness too
F
asting, is abstaining from eating, drinking and coitus from daybreak to sunset as a devotional ritual. Allah says in the Quran: “O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous.” [Quran; 2:183] That is: that you may fear Allah, keep away from His prohibitions, and fulfil His Commands. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “Whoever does not give up forged speech and evil actions, Allah is not in need of his leaving his food and drink (that is, Allah will not accept his fasting.)” This means that Allah does not want us to abstain from eating and drinking only, rather, He wants us to refrain from evil deeds and vileness too. The Prophet (PBUH) instructed that a fasting person, if offended or abused, should say: “I am fasting.” By this, as though the fasting person says: “It is because I am fasting I do not return your abuses.” The offender at that point may feel embarrassed, and desist. What is the purpose of fasting? The purpose of fasting is not physical training to endure hunger, thirst and exhaustion; rather, it is disciplining the ego to relinquish the loved for the sake of the Beloved. The loved are the desires of eating, drinking, sexual activities etc., while the Beloved is Allah, the Exalted. Hence, it is imperative to keep in mind when we observe fasting that we do so only for the sake of Allah. It becomes imperative on us to try our best to observe the rites that reflect our obedience to Allah, such as the remembrance of Allah, reading the Quran, supererogatory prayers, charitable deeds and donations, good manners etc.
A family prepares to break the Ramadan fast in Iraq.
FIRST SIGNIFICANCE: Fasting is linked with true faith in Allah, the Most Exalted; that is why it has been reported that fasting is a secret act of worship since a person may break his fast, if he
The purpose of fasting is not physical training to endure hunger, thirst and exhaustion; rather, it is disciplining the ego to relinquish the loved for the sake of the Beloved. wishes, by eating, drinking or simply by not making the intention to fast (in which case his fast will not be accepted even if he remains fasting the whole day). Fasting, then, is
a hearty, secret worship that concerns only the servant and his Creator. When the servant knowingly gives up the things and acts that nullify the fast, despite his ability to reach them in secret, he gives indeed strong evidence of his certain belief that Allah, the Almighty, watches over him in both his manifest and secret deeds. There is no doubt that in this kind of conduct is a significant training to strengthen faith in Allah. SECOND SIGNIFICANCE: Fasting is also training for the servant to aspire to the Hereafter since, by fasting, he gives up some of the worldly matters, looking forward to Almighty Allah’s reward. By observing the fast, he weighs the profit in terms of the condition in the Hereafter. However, those who measure things in materialistic
Those who measure things in materialistic terms are only concerned with the worldly aspect of fasting. As a result, they think of it as merely deprivation of the pleasures of life terms are only concerned with the worldly aspect of fasting. As a result, they think of it as merely deprivation of the pleasures of life, which please the self and satisfy the body. They are not in the least concerned with the other aspect of its significance in the hereafter that constitutes the real reward and the genuine perpetuity.
THIRD SIGNIFICANCE: Fasting is a practical embodiment of submission and servitude to Allah, the Exalted, that the servant manifests by eating and drinking at night only in response to the call of his Lord, Allaah Who Says in the Quran: “And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread [of night].” [Quran; 2:187]. That is why the fasting Muslim should eat at iftar at sunset, and just before dawn (suhoor, or the per-dawn meal) because continuous fasting (day and night) is forbidden in Islamic law. The act of eating is, therefore, a form of worship of Allah, the Almighty. When dawn starts, Muslims discontinue eating and drinking (and having sex with their spouses) in compliance with Allah’s order. It is, therefore, not simply a matter of personal choice, whim and disposition, but a matter of obedience to Allah and implementation of His Commands. FOURTH SIGNIFICANCE: Fasting is similarly a form of education to the whole society since when the fasting Muslim feels that people around him are all fasting, he finds fast no longer difficult, but feels that he is in harmony with the society to which he belongs through worship, the unifying factor of the whole community. Whoever compares voluntary fasting to the obligatory fast in the month of Ramadan perceives a certain difficulty in the former and easiness in the latter due to the aforementioned reasons. That is why Muslims find it very difficult to spend the month of Ramadan away from Muslim environments.

Eid fervor grips nation With sumptuous dates from the world over flooding the Delhi markets this Ramadan, replenish your Iftar delicacies with dates from across the globe

n the holy month of Ramadan, a lot of seasonal products find their way to the streets of the capital city - but the sumptuous dates are exceptionally cherished. Mohammad Shadab is a fruit vendor in Zakir Nagar near Jamia Millia Islamia campus. Every year ahead of Ramadan, he buys all varieties of dates from the Azadpur (wholesale) Mandi and decorates them at his shop. “Selling dates is profitable because there is a huge demand in the Muslim holy

month,” Shadab told IANS. Even when the date prices surged this year as compared to the last, business is still profitable for most sellers.
Ashraf Khan is another date seller in the Batla House market. He particularly likes the Ajwa quality of dates — which Muslims consider very nutritious and of good med-
icinal value. Ajwa dates, which arrive from Saudi Arabia and are priced at Rs.3,200 ($50) per kg, are among the most revered dates sold in the capital city this Ramadan.
According to Agro Products, a distribution company, dates are usually graded into three groups. While soft dates like Barhee, Halawy, Khadrawy, Medjool have high moisture and low sugar content, semi-dry varieties like Dayri, Deglet Noor and Zahidin have firm flesh, low moisture and high sugar content. Dry dates like Thoory have high sugar content. During the month of Ramadan, Muslims are not supposed to eat or drink from dawn to dusk to “exercise resistance against material desires”.

alks centered around food through the bustling lanes of Old Delhi acquire a new meaning in Ramadan. Some of the walks take visitors down the narrow, sinuous streets for ifatar, besides offering a midnight experience to participate in sehri. “The purpose behind organizing these food walks is to promote cultural harmony. Through this people get to know about traditions and cultural practices of other religions and regions,” said Abhinav Sapra, Founder, Delhi Food walks who conducts a Ramadan food walk .
“With ‘Ramadan food walk’ we are trying to explore the food being specifically served during Ramadan by some street food shops in old Delhi,” Sapra explained. Starting off from Chawri Bazaar, a group of 25-odd people walk around reaching the magnificent Jama Masjid almost at iftar time. As a siren blares, indicating the time to break the fast, walkers are treated to delicious ‘keema samosa’, a special item for Ramadan, juicy chicken shami kebab, crispy buff balls and paneer jalebi. “I have attended many food walks before, but the taste old Delhi offers cannot be compared with anything else. have never tried such buff balls and seekh kebabs before,” said a woman in the group of walkers. Before the taste buds have a chance to settle down the walkers are offered exquisite chicken Tikka, at Aslam Chicken corner. Simmered in gravy and loaded in butter, they literally melt in mouth. After a while walkers find themselves at the “Dilpasand Biryani” stop. The spicy buffalo-meat

Walking a few steps ahead the next stop, Haji Shabrati Nihari Wale offers one of the most authentic Nihari (buffalo meat cooked overnight at low heat) in town with hot, fluffy rotis coming off tandoor. Although there is hardly any space in the belly, but all has not been explored yet. The group move towards the Changezi chicken shop in Churiwalan street. The
chicken is offered in beautifully garnished gravy with coriander that tastes best with a squeeze of lemon. Further up is the Cool-Point shop which offers desserts like firni, kulfi faluda, badaam milk, sweet samosa and most popular shahi tukra (made up of bread, sheera (sugar syrup) and condensed milk). The final point for the walking group is Khuloos, a shop near Jama Masjid that offers 350 creative varieties of dates.

Mumbai nightlife during Ramadan
Mumbai’s Mohammed Ali Road comes alive comes alive after sunset when aromas of spices, fried chicken and charcoal-grilled kebabs fill the air.
To get a real taste of the iftar experience, head to Mohammed Ali Road in South Mumbai, a one-stop place for all Ramadan cravings IANS, MUMBAI
D
uring Ramadan, Muslims traditionally fast daily from sunrise until sunset. In the evenings, the streets around Mohammad Ali Road in south Mumbai are flooded with people and the tantalizing aroma of meat being freshly roasted to feed the famished. The kebabs are a highlight, and
apparently the best ones are to be found at Haji Tikka, on Khara Tank Road in Bhendi Bazaar. Beef kebabs cost 20 rupees, and chicken kebabs are 60 rupees. If you're not a real adventurous eater, be careful to avoid the more exotic body parts. Khiri is a popular delicacy. It's cow's udder, seasoned, cooked, and chopped up into little bite-sized pieces. And yes, it does smell milky (just
in case you were curious). Not keen on braving the rush on Mohammad Ali Road but still want to stuff yourself full? A less crowded option is Khau Galli in central Mumbai. Be sure to go after 9 p.m. for the best atmosphere. The famous Nalli Nihari at Chinese-n-Grill is popular for a reason and begs to be tried. The restaurant opens its doors at 8.30 pm so you may plan accordingly. Tender meat
falling off the bone is cooked in delicious gravy, spiced just right. Lap it up with hot and soft tandoori rotis. Surti Barah Handi is a visual delight and sure to get you clicking away with your camera. As the name suggests, 12 large clay pots are lined up right outside, each in the process of slow cooking an authentic delicacy. This process of slow-cooking the meat lends it a super-soft texture and by the time it is ladled out, it

almost merges with the gravy. You can also try the Paya, which comes highly recommended. The huge naans served alongside are legendary. In the mood to try something unique? Do order a plate of Tandoori Quail from the stalls opposite Islahi Dawakhana. Simple plastic chairs offer you the chance to rest your feet before you embark off on your next food-stop. One of the most popular pit-stops in this area and a favorite is a place called Noor Mohammadi. A legend of sorts like Karim’s in Delhi, it has been serving delicious fare for close to a century. It is popular with film stars, celebrities and business honchos alike. The recipes may be centuries old but the flavors have only gotten better with time. We highly recommend the interestingly named Sanju Baba Chicken.

Nightlife comes alive in Kashmir From iftar to sehri there is much festivity in Kashmir Haat at Srinagar’s Lal Chowk as some food outlets from Delhi serve delicacies in the state during the holy month RUWA SHAH, SRINAGAR
F
or years, they’ve tickled the tastebuds of the national capital’s denizens. Now, for the first time, some of New Delhi’s well-known food outlets have come together to cheer the people of Kashmir by serving their delicacies during the holy month of Ramzan — and that too late into the night. It’s one more sign of peace returning to this troubled land. From iftaar to sehri — the time during which Muslims are allowed to eat during Ramzan — there is much festivity in Kashmir Haat at Srinagar’s Lal Chowk city center, where food outlets like Karim’s, Khan Chacha, Tunday Kebab and Hyderabad Sultan Biryani have put up stalls serving their authentic dishes to the people of Kashmir. Surprisingly, the event attracts many patrons even after the sun sets. This is something unusual for the Kashmir Valley as earlier all business outlets were shut down 30 minutes before iftaar.
People in Srinagar are thoroughly enjoying the hustle and bustle of the post-sunset event.
“We are receiving a huge response. People are coming here even late at night and that is surprising,” Sheikh Samiullah, head of Loudbeetle — an event management company that has organized the event in collaboration with another company, The Wings, told IANS.
Akeel Hassan, executive director of The Wings, said the festival has also been started at other places in Srinagar. “Since we are receiving very good response, we have started this festival at other places like Hazratbal and the old city,” Akeel told IANS.
The brainchild of the Jammu and Kashmir ministry of tourism and culture, the main aim of the food carnival is to celebrate the night culture. “This festival is a celebration with religious sanctity. Throughout the globe, Ramzan is celebrated with such festivals. So we decid-
ed to bring in the charm to the state,” Zameer Qadri, a consultant with the ministry, told IANS. “People come in during late evenings and offer prayers in gatherings. This way, we are celebrating Ramadan,” he added. As for the citizens, they are thoroughly enjoying the hustle and bustle of the post-sunset event. “We have never seen such crowds out during the night. This is amazing,” Javid Parsa, the owner of a local food outlet, told IANS. Local food outlets also joined the carnival after witnessing the positive response. Thus, Parsa also put the stall of his Kathi Junction outlet in the carnival and said there’s a lot more that can be done. “This is just the beginning. We need to rejoice and celebrate. Such events and festivals must be organized in future as well,” Parsa said. Apart from the food, the lights, reverberating religious songs and mehendi artists for women are the other attractions. Truly, there is peace on earth — at least in this little enclave.

Telangana government allocates `260 million for Ramadan celebrations
T
he old city of Hyderabad came alive and a festive atmosphere prevailed in other Muslim majority neighborhoods in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh as the holy month of Ramadan began on June 19. The activity began on June 18 night with the devout offering ‘namaz-e-taraweeh’ or special prayers at mosques. Huffaz (those who memorize holy Quran) led the prayers. The fast began on June 18 with ‘sahr’ or pre-dawn meals. Sirens blared from mosques to wake up people and again at 4.10 a.m. to mark the beginning of the fast. Muslims abstain from consuming any food or water or engaging in sexual relations during the fast, observed every day from dawn to sunset. This year in Hyderabad and surrounding districts, it will be nearly a 15-hour long fast as the iftar (breaking of fast) time is 6.58 p.m. The streets in old city of Hyderabad and other Muslimmajority neighborhoods in the city came alive with huge congrega-

tions at mosques for ‘namaz-etaraweeh’ on June 18 night. People were seen greeting each other on the beginning of the holy month. Mosques were decked up and illuminated. The historic Mecca Masjid near Charminar, Shahi Masjid Public Gardens, Jamia Masjid Chowk, Masjid-e-Alia Gun Foundry, Azizia Masjid and other mosques witnessed huge congregations. Special
arrangements were made at some mosques and function halls for women to offer prayers. At some function halls, the prayers were held late for the convenience of traders. Shopping of groceries and other items for the month continued till late July 6 night. Many families prefer to do their shopping for ‘Eid’ before the holy month to avoid rush and spend as much time as possible in prayers. For Mus-

He said 4,000-5,000 people are expected to attend the dinner.
The eateries in the old city, Nampally, Mehdipatnam, Toli Chowki, Masab Tank and other areas do a brisk business. The old city never sleeps during the month as shopping continues till the early hours of the day. Like every year, the government has made special arrangements for Ramadan to ensure uninterrupted electricity and water supply and provide other civic amenities.

Eid Mubarak
Eid: Meaning and Significance At the end of Ramadan, Muslims express their gratitude to Allah, Who enabled them to observe the fast and granted them abundant provision during this blessed month
E
id Al-Fitr is the day of the blessings for the fasting Muslims, as they are promised a great reward by Allah, the Exalted for their righteous observance of the fast. At the end of Ramadan, Muslims express their gratitude to Allah, Who enabled them to observe the fast and, at the same time, granted them abundant provision during this blessed month. Eid ul-Fitr, therefore, is a day of joy, acts of worship, thanksgiving to Allah, cooperation, solidarity, brotherhood, unity, and spiritual provision. SIGNIFICANCE OF EID UL-FITR Eid is the time to rejoice. During the month of Ramadan, Allah puts the
faithful through a test. At the end of the month there is a great sense of achievement, of coming closer to Allah. It is the joy of spiritual fulfilment. It is a time for celebration, and a day of real happiness and joy. When Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) entered the house of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of Eid, he found two young girls playing music and singing. Abu Bakr said to them, “You are doing this in the house of the Prophet, how come?” But the Prophet (PBUH) told Abu Bakr to leave them alone, for Eid is a day of merriment and joy. We must show that Islam is the way of moderation, of tolerance, and of beauty, sharing and laughter on the appropriate occasion.
However, Eid is not simply a matter of celebration and joy. It is also a chance to share the feelings of those around us. That is why the sacrifice is offered and shared with friends, even with non-Muslims. There is no law that stops us from sharing gifts with those of our neighbors who are non-Muslim. Charity is very important and meritorious on the two Eids. It is an affirmation of our responsibility to the community in which we are living.” Eid Ul-Fitr is observed at the conclusion of the month of Ramadan, on the first day of the 10th month of the Islamic lunar calendar. This is one of two main festivals of Islam and is celebrated by all Muslims throughout the world. The ceremony of Eid Ul-Fitr
starts early in the morning with collective worship. This service is generally held in a large open place. After the prayer the leader of the prayer (the imam) delivers a short sermon and then people greet each other. ETIQUETTE OF EID Ghusl (taking a bath): One of the good manners of Eid is to take a bath before going out to the Prayer. It was reported that Sa’id ibn Jubayr said, “Three things are Sunnah on Eid: to walk (to the prayer-place), to take a bath, and to eat before going out (if it is Eid Ul-Fitr).” Eating before going out: One should not go out to the prayerplace on Eid Ul-Fitr before eating some dates, because of the hadith narrated by Al-Bukhari from Anas ibn Malik who said, “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would not go out in the morning of Eid Ul-Fitr until he had eaten some dates… and he would eat an odd number.” On Eid ulAdha, on the other hand, it is Mustahab (recommended) not to eat until after the prayer, when one should eat from the meat of one’s sacrifice.
Takbir on the day of Eid: This is one of the most important sunnah of this day. Al-Daraqutni and others reported that when Ibn Umar went out on Eid Ul-Fitr and Eid Ul-Adha, he would constantly make Takbir until he reached the prayer-place, then he would continue making Takbir until the Imam came. Congratulating each other: People may exchange greetings on Eid, no matter what form the words may take. For example they may say to one another, “Taqabbal Allahu minnaa wa minkum (may Allah accept from us and from you our good deeds)!”. Jubayr ibn Nufayr said, “At the time of the Prophet (PBUH) when people met one another on the day of Eid, they would say, ‘Taqabbal Allahu minnaa wa minka’.” Wearing one’s best clothes for Eid: Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “The Prophet (PBUH) had a jubbah (cloak) that he would wear on Eid and on Fridays.” AlBayhaqi reported that Ibn Umar used to wear his best clothes on Eid, so men should wear the best clothes they have when they go out for Eid.

Every year, Siddiqui’s Iftar party is attended by Bollywood stars and renowned dignitaries from different fields. For the past two years, his iftar has become the talk of the town as
it provided a platform to then rivals Salman and Shah Rukh to forget their enmity and embrace each other. In 2013, at Baba Siddiqui’s Iftar party, Shah Rukh and Salman had ended their several-year-long fight by hugging each other. The gesture is still considered a landmark moment in the history of Bollywood, and the hug had led to several people drawing several

he team of Bajrangi Bhaijaan held a special media event last week to showcase an Eid song from the upcoming film. The song Aaj Ki Party is sung by Mika Singh and composed by Pritam. The lyrics have been penned by Shabbir Ahmed. Salman Khan, director Kabir Khan, Pritam, Mika and Ahmed were present at the song launch but Nawazuddin Siddiqui and lead actress Kareena Kapoor Khan were missing from the event. Salman said: “This is one of the film’s better songs. Many told me to use this as a promotional song. But I told them that this film doesn’t need another song for promotion. But when Pritam made me listen to the song, I got a bit greedy to incorporate this song. This song is not there in the film, but we’ll consider adding it later on depending on the run that the film has.” Meanwhile, several religious groups, including the VHP and the Bajrang Dal, have led protests against the film. But Salman Khan, the co-producer of the film, is not bothered at all.
“If they are a religious group then the basic thing they should know that every religion respects the other person’s religion,” Salman said at an event to launch special Eid song. “Every religion preaches only one thing: ‘to follow your religion and to be respectful and to respect the other person’s beliefs and religion.’ I don’t think anyone can protest on this,” he said A right-wing groups are demanding the film’s title be

Meanwhile, actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui is one of those fortunate actors to have worked with all three big Khans of the industry — Aamir, Salman and Shah Rukh. He says he is extremely inspired by them. “There are a lot of aspects that we can learn from Aamir, Salman and Shah Rukh. Sustaining their stardom for so many years is a big achievement. ‘Bajrangi...’ already a hit in Kareena’s head? Salman Khan says his heroine Kareena has already assumed that ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ will be the biggest hit of all time IANS, MUMBAI
T
here is high optimism from all quarters that Bajrangi Bhaijaan might eclipse all box office records in Bollywood but hero Salman Khan says his heroine Kareena has already assumed that it will be the biggest hit of all time. At a media event to launch the Eid song from the film, Salman joked that Kareena was trying to alienate herself from the movie.
“Kareena is already enjoying the success of the film in London. In her mind, the film has already broken all box-office records. And hence she is partying with her husband (Saif Ali Khan) and father (Randhir Kapoor).” The question was prompted by Kareena’s absence from the song launch of Aaj Ki Party sung by Mika Singh. Kareena has claimed in several interviews before that she feels “Bajrangi Bhaijaan” will be the biggest hit of the year.
Salman also quipped that there is no chemistry between him and Kareena and so calling her ‘behenji’ was a cakewalk. “I used to forget that her name also has a Khan attached to it. But after finishing the song, I would add Khan back.” “I’m sure Kareena remembered only me while shooting with me but I was thinking of Saif while shooting,” he said. The film, also starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Harshaali Malhotra will hit the screen on July 17.

The Piku actor also posted a photograph of him posing with Jones. Irrfan will be sharing screen space with Hollywood star Tom Hanks as well in the film adaptation of Dan Brown’s book. The adaptation is being directed by Ron Howard, in which Hanks play the lead character Robert Langdon. Irrfan will portray Provost, the head of a shadowy group that becomes involved with Langdon, while French actor Omar Sy will play the leader of a disease prevention team.

urrently enjoying the success of her dance film Any Body Can Dance 2, American dancer-actor Lauren Gottlieb has also worked efficiently to perfect her Hindi, which has stunned filmmaker Karan Johar. One of the judges of upcoming season of dance reality show Jhalak Dikhlaja, Lauren, interacting with the media regarding it, said: “You’ll see an evolution of me throughout this season especially with regards to speaking in Hindi. I’ll be speaking Hindi on the show and when we were taping my lines yesterday, everyone was shocked to hear my Hindi.” “Karan Johar’s jaw dropped on the floor and he wondered ‘How the heck could you do that?’ And this is
the first time that people are going to be seeing me speaking Hindi live.” Karan Johar is also one of the judges on the show along with Shahid Kapoor and Ganesh Hegde.
‘Second Hand Husband’ utterly fails to impress Film: Second Hand Husband; Language: Hindi; Cast: Dharmendra, Gippy Grewal, Tina Ahuja, Deepshikha, Geeta Basra, Vijay Raaz, Rati Agnihotri; Director: Smeep Kang; Rating: *1/2
T
he movie Second Hand Husband may sound interesting enough to get you to enter the theatre, but within minutes of the film you realize that the title is a wee bit deceptive. The narrative as expected is not from the girl’s point of view, but quite the opposite. Set in Model Town, Punjab, the film revolves around the
painstaking efforts by a divorced hotelier Rajveer (Gippy), to get his ex-wife Neha (Geeta) married off in order to escape paying a hefty alimony. Of course, his motive behind this is also to get married to
his love interest, Gurpreet (Tina). Packed with rom-com tropes, the plot meshes the lives of Ajit (Dharmendra), Rajveer’s boss and owner of a four-star hotel, along with that of Rajesh (Vijay), a wid-
owed police inspector, who is constantly in search of a life partner. The writing in Smeep Kang’s script is devoid of freshness. The characters are stereotypical and not well-etched. Set in a Punjabi milieu, the situations and their treatment, though realistic, offer no novelty to the narration. The punches and gags too are oft-heard and the dialogues cheesy. The performances after a while get monotonous and irksome to watch, as the script itself is limiting. Dharmendra, as the philandering and alcoholic hotelier, though charming, is jaded. He neither reinvents himself nor gives a fresh perspective to this oft-played Punjabi character. —Troy Ribeiro

Shahid Kapoor gets hooked The ‘Vivah’ actor marries Delhi girl Mira Rajput at a farmhouse in Delhi IANS, NEW DELHI
A
ctor Shahid Kapoor and Delhi girl Mira Rajput tied the knot on July 7 in a low-key ceremony at a farmhouse on the capital’s outskirts after months of speculation surrounding their nuptials. The wedding ceremony was attended only by close relatives and friends, and a grand celebration is yet to happen in Mumbai. The 34-year-old star, son of veteran actor Pankaj Kapur and his former wife Neelima Azim, married 21-year-old Mira, according to the traditions of the Radha Soami sect, a philosophical organization based on the spiritual teachings of all religions. Both the families are followers of the group. Mira, whose is said to have first met the Haider star at a ‘satsang’ of the group, pursued a bachelor’s degree in English from Delhi University’s Lady Shri Ram College. The much-guarded wedding was attended by around 40 to 50 guests, according to sources. Shahid opted for a white kurta-pyjama and a safa

The actor, who began his career with Heropanti, also talked about his forthcoming projects at the event.
sangeet ceremony, while his parents landed earlier to oversee the wedding preparations. The celebrations started on July 6 evening with a sangeet ceremony, where Shahid was seen shaking a leg with Mira on the hit wedding song ‘Saj dhaj ke’ from his film Mausam. After their wedding on July 7 morning, the couple also attended a
celebratory lunch with their families. They changed their ensembles, and while Shahid opted for a pristine white sherwani designed by Kunal Rawal, Mira looked elegant and resplendent in a light pink and silver embroidered lehenga with a veil over her head. She sported an elaborate Navratna neckpiece and earrings set, and

But their efforts went in vain until the couple came hand-inhand to greet the paparazzi at Gurgaon’s Trident hotel in afternoon. After the less-than-a-minute appearance, Shahid even blew a flying kiss at the shutterbugs, before he took his newly wed bride away. Later, Shahid even shared a ‘selfie’ with his bride on Instagram, and wrote: “#hitched”. A dinner is being hosted at The Oberoi hotel in Gurgaon on Tuesday night. It will be followed by a reception in Mumbai on July 12, and Bollywood’s gliteratti is likely to light up the celebrations. Shahid, who was previously in a relationship with actress Kareena Kapoor Khan for over three years and later linked to his co-stars Vidya Balan, Priyanka Chopra, Anushka Sharma and Bipasha Basu, had confirmed being fixed with Mira at an event in March this year. However, the actor kept the details of his wedding under wraps.
ipul Shah is known to make some commercially viable films and recently we heard that Vipul Shah is working on Namaste England, a sequel of Namastey London which released in 2007. Namaste England will bring back the formidable pairing of Akshay Kumar and Vipul together. They both are known to share a great bond and are good friends. Akshay has been part of most of the films that Vipul has directed. For the time being Vipul and his team are on the look out for a new actress as the film demands a fresh pairing. When contacted, Vipul clarifies, “We will finalize the cast in 10 days. Akshay has been retained but we are looking for a new heroine. We have not approached Katrina for the film.”

Bopanna-Mergea on a high Indo-Romanian tennis duo cause big upset of Wimbledon doubles this year, enter semifinal IANS, WIMBLEDON
T
he Indo-Romanian tennis duo of Rohan Bopanna and Florin Mergea caused one of the biggest upsets of Wimbledon when they ousted men’s doubles top seeds Mike and Bob Bryan to enter the semi-finals of the lone grass court Major at the All England Club here. Seeded ninth, Bopanna and Mergea stunned the veteran Americans 5-7, 6-4, 7-6(9), 7-6(5) in two hours and 35 minutes to book place in the last four of the tournament on July 7. Next up, they will take on fourth seeds Jean-Julien Rojer of the Netherlands and Horia Tecau of Romania. Earlier, India’s Sania Mirza, partnering Brazil’s Bruno Soares, entered the mixed doubles quarter-finals. ixth-placed Pakistan jumped three places to the third spot in Test cricket rankings after triumphing over Sri Lanka 2-1 in a three-match series. Pakistan won the third Test against hosts Sri Lanka by seven wickets in Pallekele on July 7 to clinch the series 2-1, which leapfrogged them to third place with 101 points, pushing New Zealand (99) to fourth,
according to the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) latest rankings released here on Tuesday. India maintained the position after their rain-affected draw against Bangladesh in a one-off Test last month. Pakistan now trail second-ranked Australia by 10 points with South Africa (130) continuing to lead the list. Sri Lanka, in contrast, dropped four points and slipped to 92 points, but retained seventh position.
‘Young Indian team is balanced’ MUMBAI: Ahead of India’s tour of Zimbabwe, beginning July 10, new skipper Ajinkya Rahane on July 6 exuded confidence that they have a young yet balanced side that will emerge victorious in the series. Rahane was named captain of the 15-member team as Test skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and regular One-Day International (ODI) Virat Kohli, among other seniors, were rested for the series. India left for Zimbabwe on July 7 morning to play three ODIs and two Twenty20 internationals. India face the hosts in the first ODI on July 10. “We have a very good team, a balanced team. I am sure that as a team we will do well in Zimbabwe. We are confident that we will do well and win in Zimbabwe,” Rahane said here at a press conference. Speaking on the new ODI rules brought in by International Cricket
Bryan brothers started the match on an aggressive note, winning 24 of 28 first serve points and breaking their opponents once to take the first set. The second set saw the ninth
seeds making a strong comeback by breaking their opponents twice in comparison to the Bryans breaking Bopanna and Mergea only once. The Indo-Romanian combine won the set to level the match.
Paes-Hingis enter quarters
The Bryan brothers, ranked No.1 and 2 in the world, came back strongly in the third set but the ninth seeds were good enough to force the set into the tie-break. Bopanna-Mergea played brilliantly to win the tie-break 11-9 and take a 2-1 lead in the match. The fourth set also went to a tiebreak as Bopanna-Mergea held on their serve comfortably. In the crucial breaker, Bopanna and Mergea did well to come out on top 7-5 and seal the match in their favor. Elsewhere, Mirza and Soares started their third round campaign on a positive note, winning 13 of 15 first serve points and also breaking their opponents once to go one set up by 6-3. In boys’ doubles, India’s Sumit Nagal and Vietnam’s Nam Hoang Ly defeated Australia’s Alex de Minaur and Japan’s Yosuke Watanuki 6-4, 7-5 in the opener to enter the second round.

he Indo-Swiss tennis pair of Leander Paes and Martina Hingis produced a clinical performance to enter the mixed doubles quarter-finals of Wimbledon Championships outclassing Artem Sitak of New Zealand and Anastasia Rodionova of Australia 62, 6-2 here on July 7. The experienced seventh seeded pair needed just 48 minutes to outclass the Sitak-Rodionova team in straight sets to win the third round match and book a place in the quarter-finals of the grass court tournament. Paes and Hingis started their pre-quarters match on an aggressive note, winning 12 out of 16 first serve points and later on converted
two break point opportunities out of five to claim the first set 6-2. They then upped the ante in the second set to break their opponents once and denied Sitak-Rodionova any chance of breaking back.
LONDON: A British Tamil batsman died after being hit by a ball on the chest while turning up for Manipay Parish Sports Club in division three of the British Tamil League. Bavalan Pathmanathan was playing at the Long Ditton recreation grounds on July 5 when he received the blow. Pathmanathan was given CardioPulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and was treated in an ambulance but the 24-year-old died from the injuries, guardian.com reported.

Council (ICC), the skipper said, “the new rules will be very exciting and challenging for us but we will have to wait and see what will happen.” “We will get an idea after the first ODI once we play against Zimbabwe. It will be really exciting and challenging for all the players, batsmen and bowlers as well.”
ndian golfer Anirban Lahiri will head to the majestic Swiss Alps for the prestigious European Masters where history was made last year. The Swiss showpiece is the only event on European soil to be jointly sanctioned by the Asian Tour and European Tour since 2009 and will once again be staged at the picturesque Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club from July 23 to 26, a week after The Open Championship. David Lipsky of the United States inked his place in the record books when he became the first Asian Tour member to win the 2014 European
Masters by defeating England’s Graeme Storm at the first play-off hole. That defining victory sparked a spell-binding six-month run from September till February where Asian Tour members have won a magnificent five tournaments co-sanctioned with the European Tour in succes-
sion, a feat which has never been achieved before. The 28-year-old struck gold twice in February with landmark wins in Malaysia and India and broke into the world’s top-50 for the first time in his illustrious career. “Switzerland has been one of those course which I ran hot and cold. I had very good rounds and not so great rounds. We are going in a different time of the year so it’s going to be interesting because it won’t be as cold and it’ll be a great opportunity for more Asian players to do well,” said Lahiri. More than 20 Asian Tour champions, representing over 10 countries, will vie for the title.
