The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has been looking after the arrangements. With an aim of ‘Yoga for Health and Peace’, about 45,000 people will participate in the programme on Rajpath and security arrangements are being made in such a way that everything passes off peacefully, MHA official K S Dhatwalia told IANS. “Security would be as tight as it is during the Republic Day parade (on January 26),” he said. Mukesh Kumar Meena, Joint Commissioner, Delhi Police, said security would be quite tight as participants would include dignitaries like the prime minister. “The whole area would be sanitized and proper access control system would be put in place. Delhi Police special commandos would also be deployed at various points in the entire venue,” Meena told IANS.

‘We can touch $500-bn mark’ US Envoy for India Richard Verma is optimistic that bilateral trade between India and US can reach $500-bn mark in the near future IANS, WASHINGTON
T
he India-US bilateral trade in goods and services has crossed the elusive $100 billion threshold and now stands at $103 billion, US envoy Richard Verma said here on June 6, adding that both countries still have a long way to traverse to reach the goal of $500 billion. Addressing the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Verma said the goal of $500 billion is achievable. Both sides have restarted the Trade Policy Forum, “which is bringing together Indian and American trade experts to address concerns across a variety of sectors”, he said. Washington for further discussions on how to improve IP protection. “We continue to look for ways to enhance the environment for innovation in a way that promotes our shared interests,” he said.
He said through the US State Department's Indo-Pacific Economic Corridor (IPEC) initiative, “we are also supporting greater regional economic connectivity between India and its neighbors, complimenting Prime Minister Modi's 'Act East' policy”. “Through programs aimed at enhancing energy cooperation, building closer people-to-people ties, stimulating trade facilitation and transportation and easing customs and borders, IPEC seeks to strengthen links among South Asian countries and with Southeast Asia,” he said. He said under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's foreign policy “India has been on the move. In the past year the prime minister has reached out not just to the United
States, but has visited over 18 countries and 33 cities. “He is signalling that India will be a player on the global stage for years to come and we welcome and support that global leadership role politically, economically and in global institutions”. “We have also been heartened and grateful for the leadership India has shown in the face of recent crises. India's response to the devastating earthquake in Nepal has been remarkable. He said India and the US are “partnering more closely than ever before”. “We are tracking 77 different initiatives that came out of the January Obama-Modi Summit, in fields that range from defense cooperation to health and renewable energy.”
MERS: South Korean Prez delays US visit SEOUL: South Korean President Park Geun-hye has delayed her visit to the US due to the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) crisis, a presidential office statement said on Park-Geun-Hye June 10. Park decided to postpone next week's trip to the US to contain the MERS spread as early as possible, Xinhua news agency quoted the senior presidential press secretary as saying. Park was scheduled to hold a summit with US President Barack Obama on June 16. The delay comes amid the unabated MERS crisis in the country, where the number of confirmed infections surged to 108, just three weeks after the first case was identified on May 20. The two countries agreed to reschedule Park's trip to US at an earliest possible date.

Bomb scare at White House WASHINGTON: The US Secret Service interrupted the daily press conference of White House spokesperson Josh Earnest in order to temporarily evacuate the briefing room and one of the gardens of the presidential residence because of a bomb threat phoned to police that later proved to be a false alarm. Reporters covering the press conference were moved to a street separating the White House from the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, after President Barack Obama's spokesperson told them to leave the briefing room. A team of Secret Service agents inspected the room using dogs trained to detect explosives, and about half an hour after the evacuation, reporters were able to return to the briefing room and the press conference resumed. “Shortly before 2 o'clock today a telephonic bomb threat concerning the room that we are now all in was called into the Metropolitan Police
Department. The local police department contacted Secret Service officials who determined that for the safety of all of us they needed to evacuate the room and then to sweep it,” Efe news agency quoted Earnest as saying after the press conference resumed. He said the Secret Service was able to quickly check out the room and conclude they were in no danger. The White House spokesperson said the evacuation only affected the press briefing room and no other part of the presidential residence. It did not affect President Obama, who was in the building at the time. The evacuation took place just hours after a hearing in the US Senate on the Transportation Security Administration, or TSA, was also evacuated when police in the Capitol received a previous bomb threat. Earnest said he had no information about whether the two bomb scares could have been related.
S President Barack Obama on June 9 called for efforts from supporters to protect the Affordable Care Act just weeks before the law could face its biggest legal challenge to date. During a half-hour speech to the Catholic Health Association, Obama expressed deep disappointment in the political attacks against the law, which he described as “ceaseless, endless partisan attempts to roll back progress”, Xinhua reported. “It seems so cynical to want to take coverage away from millions of people, to punish millions with higher costs of care and unravel what's now become part of the fabric of America,” he told the crowd of ObamaCare supporters. “It isn't just a theory. It isn't even just about the Affordable Care Act or ObamaCare. “There's a reality that people on the ground,
US President Barack Obama day to day, are experiencing. Their lives are better,” Obama said. In his longest speech devoted to healthcare in more than a year, Obama rattled off figures about the number of people who gained insurance, the decline in overall medical spending and the years-
long streak of job growth under the law. Obama also recounted his administration's bitter fight for the Affordable Care Act starting in 2009. He said he ignored warnings about the political perils of pursuing reform because of what he saw as a mounting healthcare crisis.
US still investigating origin of cyberattack: White House IANS, WASHINGTON
T
he U.S. government continues to investigate the extent and origin of a cyberattack that compromised the personal information of four million current and former federal employees, the White House has said. “No conclusions about the attribution of this particular attack have been reached at this point,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters at his daily briefing when asked about officials placing the blame on Chinese hackers. Officials are trying to determine
whether the attack on the government's Office of Personnel Management was carried out on behalf of a state, the spokesman said. He referred, however, to previous comments from President Barack Obama expressing concerns about
China's activities in cyberspace. Earnest said authorities may ultimately decide not to disclose what they learn about the origin of the hack. “Even if a conclusion is reached about who is responsible, I can't guarantee necessarily that our law enforcement professionals will assess that making that information public is in the best interest of their investigation,” he said. China earlier pointed to a lack of “scientific evidence” linking Chinese individuals or entities to the attack, which began in December but was only detected last month.

Why Nestle won’t forfeit Maggi Facing a tough time following a ban on Maggi due to alleged high lead content in some samples of instant noodles, Nestle is already making a bid to bounce back by regaining consumer confidence
Only 7 firms can sell instant pastas
ARVIND PADMANABHAN, NEW DELHI
A
s Nestle braces to regain consumer trust over safety of its popular noodles, the jolt on its India operations will be severe, given the position “Brand Maggi” has enjoyed in its ecosystem, analysts said. But all may not be lost either, for a marquee brand built over three decades. Little wonder, the stock may have lost 15 percent in some six sessions since a sample of Maggi noodles allegedly yielded higher-than-allowed levels of some harmful substances eventually resulting in India’s food safety watchdog banning its further production, sale and export. But investors still appeared to have hope. At noon on June 5, for example, when the packed press conference of Nestle, addressed among others by its global chief executive Paul Bulcke, was in full swing at the Oberoi Hotel here — and the food safety authority’s order was out by then — the stock actually rose, from the day’s low of Rs.5,718 to a high of Rs.6,127. What the analysts did concede was that the developments would
affect the stock for some time. “Nestle’s effort towards driving premiumisation and improving the overall growth trajectory may take a hit because of change in focus to damage control and revive the Maggi brand,” said Edelweiss, an investment advisory, maintaining that costs on this can hit margins. “Also, during this phase, the brand may lose market share to rivals like ITC’s Yippee, adding further fuel to fire,” it said. “In a bid to
revive the brand, the company will have to invest heavily to communicate that its products are safe, similar to what Cadbury did in 2003.” What does it take to recover from the crisis? The company, perhaps, also realizes as much. Rebuilding trust and consumer confident was one phrase that was repeated several times over at the press meet by chief executive Bulcke who was specifically dispatched to India to clear the air with all sections of stakeholders.
NEW DELHI: Instant noodles and pastas with tastemakers of only seven companies are allowed to be sold in India, the food safety watchdog said on June 8, while also ordering tests on all approved variants and calling for the remaining “illegal” ones to be destroyed. The seven companies that have approvals for their variants of instant noodles and pastas with tastemakers are: Ruchi International (Koka), CG Foods (Wai Wai), Glaxosmithkline (Foodles), Nestle (Maggi), AA Nutrition (Yummy), Indo Nisin (Top Ramen) and ITC (brand not specified). “The safety of all other products in these categories has not been assessed as per the product approval procedures. As such, the same are unauthorized and illegal and cannot be intended for human consumption,” said a letter from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). Ordering tests on all the approved varieties, the letter written by chief executive Yudhvir Singh Malik to all the commissioners of food safety said: “As regards all the remaining food
products, you are advised to ensure such products are recalled, removed from the market and destroyed.” Speaking to IANS, the top food safety officer said tests on Nestle's Maggi and some other similar products had raised serious health concerns and that it was, accordingly, thought fit to conduct tests on all similar products for which approvals had been granted. Following tests on some samples of Maggi, the watchdog on Friday had ordered the recall of all the nine variants of Maggi pan-India and had asked Nestle to halt its production and exports. It had also issued a similar order on Nestle’s oats noodles and tastemaker. While Nestle continued to contend that its noodles were safe for consumption, several states also became pro-active by issuing their own ban orders. “Overseas and local manufacturers would be treated equally. More noodle brands including pasta and macaroni products will also start getting tested this week,” Malik said.
Fake degree row: AAP minister arrested, quits Bhagwad Gita contest winner IANS, NEW DELHI

Police slapped cases of cheating, criminal conspiracy and forgery after picking up Tomar from his office early in the morning. There was no comment from Kejriwal. On June 10, Police took Tomar to Faizabad in Uttar Pradesh in connection with the probe.
Army avenges in precision strike NEW DELHI: In a strong response to the ambush in Manipur that left 18 soldiers dead, the Indian Army on June 9 said it launched operations along the India-Myanmar border killing several militants involved in the attack. In the worst attack it faced in three decades, the army had lost 18 soldiers in the attack in Chandel district of Manipur on June 4. “Significant casualties have been inflicted on them (militants),” ADG (Military Operations) Maj. Gen. Ranbir Singh said.

aryam Siddiqui, the 12year-old Thane schoolgirl who in March topped a competition testing knowledge of the Bhagwad Gita, has decided to donate her cash rewards for the cause of girl education. Siddiqui has been showered with felicitations, awards and honors from around the country, starting from President Pranab Mukherjee, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, several chief ministers and a plethora of organizations. However, the girl, hailing from a middle-class family, has decided to
give away all the cash rewards for the education of poor girls. “Though we are not financially well off, my daughter has made it her mission to work for the education of girls,” her father Asif Siddiqui, a journalist and editor of Hindi publication Vartman Media, told IANS. Maryam, a Class 6 student of Cosmopolitan High School in Mira Road, shot into the international limelight four months ago when she topped the Bhagwad Gita competition conducted by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). She bagged the top honor among 4,000 students.

Why Israel matters to India India's business and technological ties with Israel have been growing since 1992; a $40 million India-Israel cooperation fund to promote joint scientific and technological collaborations CHAITANYA MALLAPUR, NEW DELHI
W
hen Narendra Modi travels to Israel sometime later this year, he will be the first Indian prime minister to visit, formalizing a relationship often conducted behind closed doors, through clandestine meetings and secret agreements. The announcement is already generating heat, with some criticizing it, others urging caution – with one commentator suggesting a counter-balancing visit to Israeli arch-enemy Iran – and some seeing it as an inevitable corollary to the convergence of the ideologies of Hindutva and Likud, a political movement (rooted in the free market and Jewish culture) that coalesced into a political party. While India recognized Israel on September 17, 1950 – a year after it voted against UN membership for the Jewish state – full diplomatic ties were established only in 1992, the reticence flowing from India’s traditional backing for the Palestinian cause. Here are five things that define the India-Israel relationship today: DEFENSE: Israel is India’s fifthlargest source of arms, with imports worth $0.21 billion in 2013-14 and $10 billion over the past decade. In the late 1990s, a crucial defense deal was the Indian purchase of the Barak-1, an air-defense missile, bought specifically for its capability to intercept US-made Harpoon missiles deployed by Pak-

which include cooperation in agriculture, R&D, economy and industry and security. AGRICULTURE: This has been an important facet in the Indo-Israel relationship. While Indian agricul-
ture is largely dependent on rain and an erratic monsoon, Israel, a global leader in drip irrigation, has pioneered desert agriculture with sparse supplies of water. India has benefited from Israeli technologies in horticulture mechanization, protected cultivation, orchard and canopy management, nursery management, micro-irrigation and post-harvest management, in Haryana and Maharashtra. Nearly 10 India-Israel centers of excellence for cooperation in agriculture have been set-up so far,of the 30 expected by 2015. F
or all the hype that was recently created in the mainstream media over the Indian economy "overtaking" the Chinese economy in growth terms, this article offers a contrarian perspective. It is true that India’s growth rate is projected to surpass the Chinese growth rate for the year 2015 (by IMF). However, the fact remains that Chinese growth rate has consistently outperformed India in the past 30 years. That means China is already far ahead of India in absolute value terms. An astounding gap of approximately $7.3 trillion is there between the two economies as of 2013 as per World Bank figures. Put another way, it means that the Chinese economy
in 2013 was already roughly five times bigger than the Indian economy in current dollar terms. When comparing India and China since the 1980s, the Chinese growth has been astounding (aver-
age growth rate close to 10 percent). It is due to greater integration with the world economy both in terms of trade as well as in terms of FDI inflows. On an average, from 1982-2013, the FDI inflows
into China were more than eight times that into India. Similarly, the merchandise trade was five times that of India during the commensurate period. The speed of change too is a defining feature of the Chinese economy. The contribution of China’s manufacturing sectors as a percentage of GDP mildly went down from 37 percent in 1983 to 31 percent in 2013. In India, the percentage contribution remained more or less stable at 16 percent. However in absolute (current value) terms the Chinese manufacturing grew over 35 times while the Indian one grew only nine times since 1983. In the services domain, the percentage contribution doubled from 23 percent in 1983 to 46 percent in 2014, while in India it increased
gies, located as it is in a semi-arid region with limited sources of fresh drinking water. Israel’s expertise includes recycling waste water and desalination. Indian companies and official delegations regularly visit the biannual Water Technology & Environment Control Exhibition & Conference, which showcases Israel’s water and energy technologies. IDE, an Israeli company, has built several desalination plants in India, including a 100-million-litre per day desalination plant at Nemelli in Tamil Nadu, commissioned in 2013. TRADE: India’s total trade with Israel is $6.06 billion in 2013-14, up 57 percent over 2009-10. The trade balance stood in India’s favor at $1.44 billion in 2013-14. Mineral fuels and oils are India’s leading export to Israel worth $1.45 billion in 2013-14. India’s major imports from Israel in 2013-14 included natural or cultured pearls and precious stones worth $1.20 billion. Stones and pearls are the second-largest commodity, in terms of value, exported to Israel from India after mineral fuels. The Indo-Israel trade in diamonds increased 98 percent from $1.25 billion in 2009 to $2.48 billion in 2013. The two countries are negotiating a free-trade agreement. for goods and services, which should boost investments and trade ties. Israel ranks 44th in terms of foreign direct investment in India, putting in $82 million between April 2000 and February 2015.
from 41 percent in 1983 to 51 percent in 2013. In absolute terms, China’s services sector grew 83 times since 1983 while the Indian services grew 11 times. The agricultural contribution in both the economies went down from roughly 33 percent in 1983 to 10 percent in China and to 18 percent in India. In absolute terms, the Chinese agriculture sector grew 12 times while India’s grew just five times. This shows that China has outperformed India in each of the sectors in the past 30 years. Also, India’s contribution to world GDP is at present (2013) is a just below 2.5 percent, which is miniscule. The advantage that China has built over the past 30 years cannot be easily negated. The catch-up thus seems highly unlikely. To close this gap in the future, the Indian economy will have to outperform China's in a significant manner.

KATHMANDU: Nepal’s parliament on June 9 expressed serious concern and reservations over recent India-China agreement to expand border trade at Qiangla/Lipu-Lekh Pass, a far western point of Nepal, which the Nepal government claims to be a part of its territory. The Nepal government has already instructed its missions in New Delhi and Beijing to study the accord and find out what actually it means for Nepal. According to a joint statement issued on May 15 in Beijing during Indian Prime Minister Narenda Modi’s visit to China, the two countries agreed to expand border trade at Qiangla/Lipu-Lekh Pass. The joint communique states that “the two sides recognized that enhancing border areas cooperation through border trade, pilgrimage by people of the two countries... can effectively promote mutual trust, and agreed to further broaden this cooperation so as to transform the border into a bridge of cooperation and exchanges”. “The two sides agreed to hold negotiation on augmenting the list of

I BEIJING: Myanmar’s opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi arrives on June 10 in China, a historic visit that comes during a period of marked tension between the two countries. Her visit will last till June 13. She is to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Prime Minister Li Keqiang, and a group of Chinese businessmen. During the visit, Beijing will look to strengthen its relations with Myanmar’s reformist government and the opposition. According to the Chinese foreign ministry, the trip will deal with exchanges between the Chinese Communist Party and Myamnar’s National League for Democracy led by Suu Kyi, which is expected to do well in the upcoming elections in Myanmar this year. After the dissolution of the military junta in 2011, Myanmar’s closeness to the US has been concerning Beijing which now seeks to improve relations with the reformist government and the opposition.

when Israel refused to release a third batch of Palestinian prisoners and approved thousands of settler homes in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, where the Palestinians aspire to build their own state. Since then, Israel has suffered growing criticism and isolation on the international level due to its continuing construction in the West Bank and east Jerusalem of Jewish settlements. A meeting of International Relations and Labor Committee of Nepal’s parliament on June 9 concluded that the agreement was against international principles and values at a time when Nepal and India were working to resolve the boundary issues. Anshu Jain steps down as Deutsche Bank chief IANS, LONDON
G
ermany’s largest lender Deutsche Bank purged its leadership on June 7, appointing Briton John Cryan as chief executive to replace Anshu Jain just two weeks after Jain was given more power to reorganize the bank. Jain, an Indian-born British citizen, landed the top spot at Deutsche in 2012 after the investment banking division he ran consistently delivered up to 85 percent of group profit and frequently outperformed peers. Deutsche Bank has struggled to restore an image tarnished by a raft of regulatory and legal problems, which include probes into alleged manipulation of benchmark interest rates, mis-selling of derivatives, tax evasion and money laundering.

The German bank presented a radical management shake-up on May 21 in a last ditch attempt to restore confidence in its management, but some investors demanded more changes. Cryan, 54, has been on the bank’s supervisory board since
2013 and was a former chief financial officer of rival bank UBS. He will replace co-CEO Jain, who will resign on June 30, and become the sole CEO when the other coCEO, Juergen Fitschen, steps down next year, the bank said. Cryan said there was work to be done. “Our future will be defined by how well we deliver on strategy, impress clients and reduce complexity,” he said in a Deutsche statement announcing his appointment. The new CEO, who starts on July 1, was heavily involved in the bank’s new strategy blueprint and is unlikely to make significant changes to it, a senior bank source told Reuters. “The strategy will not be reformulated but there’s obviously room to shape the details of the strategy,” the source said.

Cisco said Pankaj will continue to lead Cisco’s 25,000 development engineers and the company’s $36 billion technology portfolio. In previous roles at Cisco, Patel served as Senior Vice President and General Manager for the company’s service provider business, which achieved market segment leadership in routing, video and mobility under his leadership.

Revanth Reddy, the TDP’s deputy leader in the Telangana assembly, was arrested by the ACB on May 31 when he was offering Rs.5 million to Stephenson to make him vote for the TDP-BJP candidate in the Telangana legislative council elections. TRS leaders have alleged that Naidu was the mastermind in the case and demanded that he be booked. While Naidu threatened to

KCR, as the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) chief is popularly known, said even god will not save Naidu. Earlier, addressing a public meeting at Mangalgiri in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh to mark the first year of the TDP government, Naidu reacted sharply to the alleged tapping of his phone by the TRS government and said he has equal rights on Hyderabad, which is a common capital for 10 years.

The development came a day after an audio tape of a purported telephonic conversation between Naidu and nominated Telangana legislator Elvis Stephenson was aired on some TV channels. TDP leaders lodged first information reports (FIRs) against Chandrasekhar Rao, officials of ACB and some TV channels. The complainants claimed that the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government fabricated the audio tape aired by some TV channels to implicate Naidu in a false case. Cases under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) relating to criminal conspiracy and forgery were booked. Meanwhile, TRS government has termed FIRs against KCR a cheap tactic and said this will not help Naidu to escape from law.

He also told the gathering that he was ready to sacrifice his life for their self-respect. “I also have the ACB and I also have police in Hyderabad,” he said while launching a bitter attack on KCR. Alleging that phones of Naidu are being tapped by Telangana government, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) government decided to take up the issue with the central government and complain about the police attitude in Hyderabad, the common capital. The 16th edition of International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Weekend and Awards, which concluded on June 7 after three days of entertainment and fun, saw a galaxy of stars regaling their umpteen fans in the Malaysian capital. With names like Hrithik Roshan, Anil Kapoor, Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra in attendance, the gala attracted many star-struck admirers from across the globe. “It just gets better each year. It’s a vast project with budget between $10 million and $25 million,” Viraf Sarkari, director, Wizcraft International Entertainment Pvt Ltd, which promotes IIFA Weekend and Awards globally each year, told IANS. After traveling to locations like London, Dubai, Macau, Toronto,
Bollywood stars like Anushka Sharma, Parineeti Chopra, Hrithik Roshan and Shraddha Kapoor performed during IIFA•Awards 2015 in Kuala Lumpur.
Singapore and Tampa Bay, the IIFA extravaganza came back to Malaysia for the second time for its 16th edition, and the organisers were not disappointed at all. Established in 2000, the gala was held at Genting Highlands Resort, Malaysia, in 2002. The edition was hailed by many Bollywood fans, who consider the three-day gala to be perfect platform to meet their idols. “Indian cinema is getting popular day by day. The fans hardly get a
chance to meet the stars and the stars also find it difficult to connect with their global fans like this. IIFA is the perfect platform to bring them close to each other,” he said. The fans got a chance to catch Hrithik live in action at Pavilion mall, where he interacted with his fans and performed impromptu as well. Before the special screening of the multi-starrer movie Dil Dhadakne Do, fans also got to shake hands, click selfies and take autographs from their favorite celebrities.
‘QUEEN’ WINS TOP HONORS AT IIFA KUALA LUMPUR: Vikas Bahl’s directorial Queen, a coming-of-age story of a woman’s self-discovery, bagged awards in the Best Picture, Best Story and Best Performance in a Leading Role — Female categories at the three-day long 16th edition of the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Weekend and Awards here. The Kangana Ranaut-starrer was up against 2 States, PK, Haider, Highway and Mary Kom for the Best Picture trophy. The actress didn’t turn up to collect her trophy for Best Performance in a Leading Role — Female, so the film’s director received the award on her behalf. Bahl, however, lost the award in the Direction category to Rajkumar Hirani, who took home the trophy for PK. In the Leading Role — Male category, Shahid Kapoor, who also performed at the award ceremony, hosted by Ranveer Singh
and Arjun Kapoor, walked home with the award for his performance in Haider. He had strong contenders in Aamir Khan (PK), Hrithik Roshan (Bang Bang!), and Shah Rukh Khan (Happy New Year). Hrithik might have lost the award to Shahid, but his Bang Bang! act with a
bhangra twist won hearts of many, including Deepika Padukone, who was felicitated with Woman of the Year award. She was also nominated in the Best Performance in a Leading Role — Female. Riteish Deshmukh grabbed the award for Best Performance in a Supporting Role — Male for his villainous act in Ek Villain against competition from Ronit Roy (2 States), Randeep Hooda (Kick), Inaamulhaq (Filmistaan), Naseeruddin Shah (Finding Fanny) and Kay Kay Menon (Haider). But Kay Kay wasn’t left disappointed as he received the award for Best Performance in a Negative Role for Haider, while his costar Tabu won Best Performance in a Supporting Role — Female. There was also an award for Best Regional Film, which went to Riteish-starrer Marathi film Lai Bhaari, co-produced by his star wife Genelia Deshmukh.

India to play 3 ODIs, 2 T20s in Zimbabwe
HARARE: Zimbabwe Cricket on June 10 said India have agreed to tour Zimbabwe for a limited overs series featuring three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and two Twenty20 Internationals. “I can confirm that it’s now a done deal. India are arriving on July 7 and will leave on the 20th, 3 ODIs and 2 T20s,” the chairman of the Zimbabwe Cricket Committee, Alistair Campbell, said on Twitter. The BCCI is yet to issue a statement regarding the tour. “The schedule for the matches is almost done and should be released later this week. However, all the matches will be played in Harare,” he added. India are currently touring Bangaldesh for a series comprising
one Test and three ODIs. They also have a series against Sri Lanka and South Africa later this year. India last toured Zimbabwe in 2013 under Virat Kohli’s captaincy when they swept the five-match ODI series 5-0. Zimbabwe recently toured Pakistan, playing three ODIS and two T20s and becoming the first Test side to visit Pakistan since terrorists attacked the Sri Lankan team in Lahore in March 2009. The India series will be Zimbabwe’s first international assignment since their Pakistan tour. Campbell also said New Zealand would arrive a week after India’s departure for three ODIs and a lone T20 followed by Pakistan’s tour. “We are very pleased that India are coming and the fact that New Zealand are coming just a week after India’s departure,” Campbell said. “Pakistan are coming in August as part of the benefits for our tour there recently, and there is another tour by West Indies.” Zimbabwe coach Dav Whatmore was happy that his team would get the opportunity to play more competitive cricket. “The only way we can improve is by competition,” Whatmore said. “I am pleased that we have a good number of matches lined up, just like any full member. Next up is India and we will be looking to continue improving.”
Businessman Chung Mongjoon, scion of South Korea’s automobile company Hyundai is also believed to be in the running. A final decision on the presidential election date is likely to be made in July during FIFA’s extraordinary meeting of its executive committee.
LAUSANNE: International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach has said he is not in the position to advise FIFA but has encouraged football’s world governing body to continue with its reforms amid a crisis though the progress could be painful. “It’s not up to the IOC to give advice. It’s just to remember that we had this kind of problems 15 years ago,” Bach was quoted as saying by Xinhua here on June 8. “We can’t give detailed suggestion of what to do, but we appreciate there is a readiness for reforms,” the German told a press conference in Laussane at the close of a two-day executive board meeting. “We also know from our experience that ... putting everything on the desk can be a painful experience, but it is absolutely
necessary to do this as we have seen from our own history.” Just less than one week ago, FIFA president Sepp Blatter resigned from the post he resumed for just two days in a fifth term after the Swiss police staged a raid to arrest seven FIFA senior officials on corruption charges.

Ex-student donates $400k to MSU to honor Prof. Jain BY A STAFF WRITER AST L ANSING, MI -- A former student of Anil K. Jain, the University Distinguished Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at Michigan State University (MSU) in East Lansing, Mich., has made a $400,000 anonymous gift to honor the Indian American, who is one of the world’s foremost authorities on pattern recognition, computer vision, and biometric recognition. The Anil K. Jain Endowed Graduate Fe l l ow s h i p w a s e n d ow e d b y “a n international businessman who was a visiting scholar in computer graphics and image processing in Jain’s laboratory in the early 1980s,” MSU said in a statement. The fellowship will support Ph.D.-level research on pattern recognition, computer vision and biometric recognition and MSU’s Computer Science and Engineering Department will select recipients of the Jain Fellowship. Indian is held guilty BY Awire STAFF WRITER for fraud BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK -- An Indian American business consultant from California has been convicted for his role in a fraudulent scheme to pay kickbacks to an undercover agent posing as a corrupt hedge fund manager in order to obtain financing for small, publicly traded companies. Sandip Shah, 41, of Chino, Calif., was convicted following a five-day jury trial on nine counts of wire fraud. He was indicted in May 2014, and is scheduled to be sentenced in August this year. Shah was involved in a scheme to pay secret kickbacks to a purported investment fund representative who had agreed to use the fund’s money to buy stock in three companies that had hired Shah to help them raise capital. The kickbacks were concealed through the use of sham consulting agreements and other fraudulent documents. Shah and the company executives were unaware that the purported investment fund representative was actually an undercover agent with the FBI. The conviction followed a year-long investigation focusing on preventing fraud in the micro-cap stock markets. Micro-cap companies are small publicly traded companies whose stock often trades at pennies a share. Fraud in the micro-cap markets is of increasing concern to regulators as such markets have proven to be fertile grounds for fraud and abuse. This is, in part, because accurate information about micro-cap stocks may be difficult for the average investor to find, since many microcap companies do not file financial reports with the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC).

Ultimately, this endowed fellowship will enhance our mutual scientific interests through new generations of graduate students.” Leo Kempel, dean of the MSU College of Engineering, said. “We are delighted someone has chosen to honor Dr. Jain’s long and meritorious service in this way.” . The gift is part of MSU’s Empower Extraordinary Campaign. Jain and his family will donate an added $100,000 to augment the endowment. Jain received a bachelor’s in technology from IIT-Kanpur (India) in 1969 and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Ohio State University. He was a consultant to India’s Aadhaar program which provides a 12-digit unique ID number to Indian residents based on their fingerprint and iris data. He is currently serving as an advisor to the Brazilian National ID project. Jain also currently serves as a member of the Forensic Science Standards Board and is co-organizing a program on Forensics at the Statistical and Mathematical Sciences Institute.
Trial of cop begins in sex attack case
M
ASSACHUSET TS -- The trial of an Indian American police officer charged with sexual assault in 2014 has begun in a Massachusetts court. Rajat Sharda, 33, while on duty, allegedly sexually assaulted a 29-year-old Connecticut woman in August 2013, threatening her not to report the incident, which came to light in February 2014. The woman testified in court that on the night of August 6, 2013, she was inside a parked sports utility vehicle (SUV), undressed, with her boyfriend Michael Betancourt when officer Sharda approached the vehicle and asked her to step outside the SUV. “He was asking me what I’d be willing to do to not be arrested,” she stated in court. After handcuffing Betancourt, Sharda allegedly sexually assaulted and threatened the woman, before leaving from the location.
BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK -- Millions of fliers might soon need to buy new carry-on suitcases. Global airlines announced on June 9 new guidelines that would shrink the size of bags allowed on planes, part of an effort to free up space in packed overhead bins. The move means that many bags now allowed would need to be checked. Fliers would either need to buy smaller suitcases or pay a fee to check their bags, typically $25 each way. Under the new guidelines set by the airlines’ trade group, the International Air Transport Association, bags could be no larger than be 21.5 inches tall by 13.5 inches wide by 7.5 inches deep. That’s smaller than the current maximum size allowed by US airlines: 22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches.

Indian designs droplet computer from water
ASHINGTON, DC -- A Stanford University assistant professor and his students have designed and built a unique computer that operates using the physics of moving water droplets. Led by Indian American scientist Manu Prakash, the team successfully modeled a functional computer that uses water instead of electrons to send data. Theoretically, due to the machine’s “universal nature,” the droplet computer can perform any operation that an electronic computer can, albeit at drastically slower speed. The creation joins his expertise in manipulating droplet fluid dynamics with a basic element of computer science, an operating clock. “We already have digital computers to process information. Our goal is not to

compete with electronic computers or to operate word processors on this,” stated Prakash. “Our goal is to build a completely

new class of computers that can precisely control and manipulate physical matter. Imagine if when you run a set of computations that not only information is processed but physical matter is algorithmically manipulated as well. We have just made this possible at the mesoscale.” Born in Meerut, India, Prakash earned a B.Tech. in computer science and engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur before moving to the United States. He did his master’s and PhD in applied physics at MIT before founding the Prakash Lab at Stanford, according to his profile on the university’s website. Prakash gained a certain measure of academic fame by delivering a TED talk in March 2014 about 50-cent microscopes that fold like origami. His ultra-low-cost, “printand-fold” paper microscope won a $100,000 grant from the Gates Foundation in 2012.
KOKIE, IL -- A Skokie man was indicted last week on charges he traveled with his three children to Turkey without their mother’s consent. Murtaza Ali, 44, was charged with one count of international parental kidnapping by a federal grand jury. He was arrested on May 6 upon his return to O’Hare International Airport with the children and remains in federal custody. According to the children’s mother, Ali and the three children were scheduled to pick her up on May 2 following a social gathering in which she was in attendance. When the woman returned home after not being picked up, she found all passports and luggage missing, initiating an investigation by the Skokie Police Department. Ali and the children boarded a Turkish Airlines flight at O’Hare Airport and arrived in Istanbul, Turkey that day, with plans to head to Pakistan, according to the indictment. International parental kidnapping carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

SCHAKOWSKY BACKS RAJA FOR CONGRESS BY A STAFF WRITER
C
HICAGO (IL) -- US. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL 9th District) has announced her endorsement of Raja Krishnamoorthi’s candidacy to replace Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL 8th District) in Congress. “Raja is the best choice to succeed Tammy Duckworth in Congress,” Schakowsky said. “I look forward to Raja joining me in the fight to make equal pay for equal work the law of the land. Raja knows that when women succeed, America succeeds. Raja will work hard in Washington for gender equality and economic security for working families.” Schakowsky serves in the House Democratic Leadership as Chief Deputy Whip and Vice Chair of the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee. She is a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, where she serves on the Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade, the Subcommittee on Health and the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations. “I am thrilled that Rep. HICAGO, IL -- The former owner of a physical therapy provider in Illinois has been sentenced to federal prison and ordered to repay $2.5 million over a scheme he designed to pay off debt and student loans. According to the US Attorney’s Office in the Northern District of Illinois, Ankur Roy, 38, of Miami Beach, Florida, was ordered to forfeit more than $2.5 million in proceeds he and two co-defendants gained by submitted false claims to Medicare and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois. Roy owned and operated Selectcare Health, an outpatient physical and respiratory therapy provider in Park Ridge and Skokie, Illinois. He proposed the scheme to two co-defendants as a means to extricate them from debt, and designed it to avoid raising red flags with Medicare and Blue Cross Blue Shield’s fraud detection systems. Medicare and Blue Cross Blue Shield paid the defendants more than $2.5 million in false claims for services never provided. Roy took over $600,000 for his own purposes, including for personal expenses, paying off credit card bills and repaying his student loan. A jury convicted him on five counts in July 2014. In late May, he was sentenced to 75 months in prison followed by three years of supervision after his release. He must surrender to the Federal Bureau of Prisons on July 15, 2015. In 2013, his two co-defendants pled guilty: Dipen Desai was sentenced t o 27 months’ imprisonment; Akash Patel is scheduled to be sentenced in July.
US. Rep. Jan Schakowsky Duckworth in serving the hardworking families of the 8th District in the northwest Chicago suburbs,” Krishnamoorthi said. “Rep. Schakowsky is a leading advocate in Washington for working families and women to make sure that gender equality becomes a reality. I would be honored to have the opportunity to represent Illinois with her on Capitol Hill.” The endorsement from Rep. Schakowsky
Raja Krishnamoorthi follows Rep. Luis Gutiérrez’s (D-IL 4th District) support for Raja for Congress. In addition to a total of six Members of Congress backing Krishnamoorthi, other key supporters include State Sen. Dan Kotowski (D-28th District) and State Sen. Dave Koehler (D-46th District), along with more than 50 prominent local Democratic activists and party leaders in the 8th District.
Raja announced at the end of May that he had raised more than $400,000 for his campaign in less than two months during the second fundraising quarter of 2015. He formed his campaign committee in April with the Federal Election Commission. Krishnamoorthi, 41, of Schaumburg, has a unique understanding of the challenges facing the US economy and their implications for families and future workers. With successful experience in both the public and private sectors, he will go to Congress with clear ideas to help more Americans find good jobs and economic security in a changing world. Raja currently serves as president of Sivananthan Labs and Episolar, Inc., small businesses that sell products in the national security and renewable energy industries. He is a co-founder of InSPIRE, a non-profit organization that provides training to Illinois students and veterans in solar technology, and was formerly Vice-Chairman of the Illinois Innovation Council, whose mission is to promote innovative technologies that support economic growth and job creation in Illinois. Raja grew up in Peoria and lives in Schaumburg with his wife and two sons.

As the Committee Chairman of Wheeling Township Democratic Organization, he worked very hard to improve the image of Democrats in suburbs when Republicans controlled the Chicago suburbs. This annual event honors the late Botterman, who taught northwest suburban Democrats how to organize. Alex Armour was the recipient of the 2015 Botterman Award. United Airlines faces boycott by Muslims
HICAGO, IL-- Hundreds of people have pledged to boycott United Airlines after a Muslim passenger alleged discrimination due to Islamophobia over an unopened can of Diet Coke onboard the American airliner. Tahera Ahmad’s Facebook post over the “clear” discrimination went almost immediately viral on May 30. The Muslim chaplain at Chicago’s Northwestern University was onboard a flight when she asked for an unopened can of soda for hygienic reasons and says was told, “Well, I’m sorry. I just can’t give you an unopened can, so no Diet Coke for you.” When the man next to her allegedly
Tahera Ahmad got an unopened beer can from the inflight service, Ahmad said she was told
something even more inflammatory: “We are unauthorized to give unopened cans to people, because they may use it as a weapon on the plane.” Ahmad said her fellow passengers were of no help. In her post, she says she was told by another male passenger across the aisle that “you Moslem, you need to shut... up” and used an offensive word. “I am in tears of humiliation from discrimination... #IslamophobiaISREAL,” she posted. Muslim activists took to social media to call the alleged incident an “inexcusable” act of bigotry as other social media users said they would boycott United Airlines based on what they interpreted as open discrimination.

Yoga gala on the cards
As thousands of enthusiasts from across the globe brace up for the International Yoga Day to be observed on June 21 in New Delhi, the event is all set to find a place in Guinness World Records SUSHIL KUMAR, NEW DELHI
H
undreds of thousands of health enthusiasts from 193 countries will perform various ‘asanas’ (yogic postures) at different places across the globe with some 35,000 to 40,000 people who would lead the celebrations from Rajpath in the heart of the Indian capital to mark the first International Yoga Day on June 21. Ishvar V. Basavaraddi, director, Morarji Institute of Yoga Sciences, said that people from 193 countries would take part in the celebrations. “Our institute has prepared thousands of CDs and booklets in different languages to help people perform proper asanas worldwide,” Basavaraddi told IANS, adding that the CDs and booklets have already been sent to all 193 countries. The pictures in the CDs and the booklets would be of various Yoga gurus, including that of Baba Ramdev, performing asanas, he said. “This would certainly help people understand the importance of
Yoga in life,” Basavaraddi said. He said the event may create yoga awareness among more people and they might start doing the ancient Indian exercises that keep mind and body healthy and peaceful. The CDs will be played on Rajpath on big screens so that participants can perform
while watching them. “The halfhour program will begin at 7 a.m.,” Basavaraddi said, adding that the event will find a place in the Guinness World Records. The United Nations (UN) declared June 21 as the International Yoga Day on India’s request last year. Prime Minister Narendra
Sleep aids memory even after concussion NEW YORK: Sleep helps memory consolidation even in individuals who sustain mild traumatic brain injury (TBI), also known as concussion, new research has found. After a concussion, a person can be left with disturbed sleep, memory deficits and other cognitive problems for years. “It is interesting to note that despite having atypical or disturbed sleep architecture, people in our study had intact sleep-dependent memory consolidation,” said lead researcher Rebecca Spencer from University of Massachusetts. “Supporting opportunities to sleep fol-

lowing a concussion may be an important factor in recovery from cognitive impairments,” Spencer noted. The researchers found that individuals who had sustained a mild TBI more than a year earlier had greater recall in a word memorization task after they had slept than when tested after an equal period awake. Specifically, data from participants who had a concussion more than one year before had differences in sleep as measured by polysomnography, a montage of recordings used to stage sleep.
Modi, who will lead the celebrations, also called for making yoga a mass movement, connecting people and strengthening the bonds of humanity. “The entire global community has come together in support of celebrating the first-ever International Day of Yoga on June 21. Now, that
strong support has also turned into immense enthusiasm. I am seeing several people and organizations across the world are working towards making it a memorable event,” Modi said in a statement.
‘Over 95 pc people have health issues’ IANS, WASHINGTON
I
n a shocking revelation, a major analysis of diseaseburden worldwide has found that over 95 percent of the world’s population has health problems -- with over a third having more than five ailments. Just one in 20 people worldwide (4.3 percent) had no health problems in 2013, with a third of the world’s population (2.3 billion individuals) experiencing more than five ailments, claimed the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2013 published in the prestigious journal The Lancet. Moreover, the research shows that worldwide the proportion of lost years of healthy life (disabilityadjusted life years) due to illness (rather than death) rose from around a fifth (21 percent) in 1990 to almost a third (31 percent) in 2013. “In 2013, low back pain and major depression ranked among the top 10 greatest contributors to disability in every country,
causing more health loss than diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma combined,” the study said.
Importantly, rates of disability are declining much more slowly than death rates Low back pain, depression, iron-deficiency anemia, neck pain and age-related hearing loss resulted in the largest overall health loss worldwide in 1990 and 2013. In 2013, musculoskeletal disorders (low back pain, neck pain and arthritis) and mental
and substance abuse disorders (depression, anxiety, and drug/ alcohol use disorders) accounted for almost half of all health loss worldwide. Importantly, rates of disability are declining much more slowly than death rates. For example, while increases in rates of diabetes have been substantial, rising by around 43 percent over the past 23 years, death rates from diabetes increased by only 9 percent. Worldwide, the number of individuals with several illnesses rapidly increased both with age and in absolute terms between 1990 and 2013. Also, mental and behavioral disorders have not received the attention that they deserve.
