Beau Biden loses battle against cancer WASHINGTON: Beau Biden, the 46-year-old son of U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, has died of brain cancer. “Beau Biden was, quite simply, the finest man any of us have ever known,” CNN quoted his father as saying in a statement. An Iraq war veteran, the eldest son of the U.S. vice president died on Saturday evening, his family said in a statement. “It is with broken hearts that Hallie, Hunter, Ashley, Jill and I announce the passing of our husband, brother and son, Beau, after he battled brain cancer with the same integrity, courage and strength he demonstrated every day of his life,” Joe Biden said. Beau served as the attorney general of the US state of Delaware. He was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2013, but after receiving treatment at the M.D. Anderson Cancer

However, the cancer returned and Beau was pursuing aggressive treatment at Walter Reed National Military Medical Centre in Bethesda, Maryland, according to a statement from the vice president’s office. US President Barack Obama issued a statement on Biden’s death. Obama said he and his wife Michelle considered him a friend, and praised his public service and devotion to his family.

President Barack Obama signs new NSA reform bill on surveillance

WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama signed the reform bill of the National Security Agency (NSA) on surveillance, hours after the Senate's approval, leading to the enactment of the measure. In a statement, the White House reported the instructions of Obama, who rushed to enact the USA Freedom Act, amending certain provi-

WASHINGTON: The US administration will not seek Supreme Court protection to carry out President Barack Obama’s immigration measures designed to normalize the status of five Barack Obama million undocumented foreigners, which he announced six months ago but the implementation of which a court temporarily put on hold. The Department of Justice announced in a communique that, instead of resorting to the high court, the government will focus on fighting for immigration relief at a hearing scheduled for July 6 in the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans.

The US will continue its surveillance practices, but it will not be the government who will directly collect the information from the citizens, but telephone companies which will gather the data. This information will be facilitated specifically, should the administration require it for security reasons. With 67 votes in favor and 32 against, the Senate on June 2 put an end to two weeks of disagreements between two factions of the Republican opposition.

In a statement, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton called the ruling “a victory for those committed to preserving the rule of law in America”. “We will continue to fight the brazen lawlessness that has become a trademark of the Obama administration,” Paxton said. The White House slammed the decision and said that the judges in the 5th Circuit “chose to misinterpret the facts and the law”. “President Obama’s immigration executive actions are fully consistent with the law,” White House spokesperson Brandi Hoffine said. “The president’s actions were designed to bring greater accountability to our broken immigration system, grow the economy, and keep our communities safe,” the White House spokesperson added.

Talks between US, Pakistan begin WASHINGTON: The U.S. and Pakistan, which begin the third round of their strategic dialogue here this week, will also look for a window for Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s second Aizaz Chaudhry visit to the White House. A high-level delegation headed by Pakistani Foreign Secretary Aizaz Chaudhry attended the talks which begin on June 2. The delegation arrived here on May 31 evening. Diplomatic sources in Washington rejected earlier media reports that Sharif might visit the White House in June for a meeting with President Barack Obama. However, they indicated that a visit was possible either in September or October. Sharif may visit New York in Sept to attend the UNGA.

Monsoon blues for India

Government on alert as the rainfall this monsoon is likely to be below normal-to-deficient at 88 percent — plus or minus four percent — of the normal (average) rainfall IANS, NEW DELHI

A

n official forecast of a 12-percent rain deficit during this monsoon season caused much concern in India over a possible crop failure, drought, inflation and an overall adverse impact on the economy, spooking a key stock index by nearly 2.5 percent and even prompting a key minister to invoke god. “The latest forecast is bothering me. The rainfall this monsoon is likely to be below normal-to-deficient at 88 percent — plus or minus four percent — of the normal (aver-

age) rainfall, which is down from 93 percent in April,” said Science and Technology Minister Harsh Vardhan. “Let’s pray to god that the forecast does not come true,” he said on the margins of an event in Noida, adding that the likelihood of a shortfall of rain below the longterm average from 1951-2000 had now risen to 93 percent from 68 percent that was predicted in April. Incidentally, when the minister was revealing the latest forecast, Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan was expressing concern over the deficient rains based on an earlier forecast of 7 percent shortfall. This added to the

simmering row between Delhi’s AAP government and Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung escalated this week after he challenged the government decision to appoint Bihar Police officials in the city’s Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB), saying it was he who headed the anti-graft body. Jung’s assertion triggered a strong retaliation from the Aam Aadmi Party and its four-month-old government. Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia accused Jung of making a mockery of governance in the capital.

Arvind Kejriwal

The Lt. Governor and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s government are locked in an ugly battle over the appointment and transfer of bureaucrats.

Sisodia said the AAP government had the full right to hire officials in the ACB. He accused Jung of working at the behest of the Narendra Modi-led central government. The ACB, being a police station, functions under the authority, control and supervision of the Lt. Governor, a position that has also been clarified by the ministry of home affairs on May 21. The statement said no proposal on posting of police officials from outside Delhi had been received by Jung’s office. Jung further said the he was not kept in the loop. The AAP was more critical of Jung.

The IMD earlier forecast the southwest monsoon would set over Kerala on May 30, with a plus or minus four days. If one were to go by this calculation, June 3 would be the last date for the onset of monsoon in the southern state. In the past three years, monsoon set in in the first week of June, while from 2006 till 2011, the onset was in the last week of May.

While Nestle continued to maintain that its product was “safe” for consumption, reports of its samples testing positive for higher-than-permissible levels of lead and MSG has created concern. “It was a quick fix snack for my kids, especially when they were very hungry

after school but now I cannot take their health for granted,” Rameshwari Devi, a homemaker in Noida, told IANS. According to reports, states and union territories like Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Goa, Karnataka and Kerala have sent samples of Maggi noodles for testing. This followed a recall order for a particular batch of the noodle brand by the UP government.

The importance of the annual weather phenomenon of monsoon can be gauged by the fact that it accounts for as much as 75 percent of India’s rains and over half of the farm sector’s water needs. The minister blamed El Nino as well as climate change due to global warming, as two of the many other reasons behind the forecast.

S Defense Secretary Ashton Carter, who is on a three-day visit to India, on June 3 met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, ahead of signing of a new defence framework agreement. Carter earlier met Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, with whom he will sign the agreement that will strengthen India-US defense relations. He also met External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and

National Security Adviser Ajit Doval. Earlier, Carter laid a wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti memorial at India Gate. This is Carter's first visit to India as defence secretary. Carter, who arrived in Visakhapatnam on June 2, has visited the Eastern Naval Command and the indigenous stealth frigate, INS Sahyadri. He had earlier visited India in Sept 2013 and July 2012 as deputy secretary of defense when he was the main architect of the India-US Defense Technology and Trade Initiative (DTTI).

Manmohan denied due CREDIT?

Is there a fear in the Congress that acknowledging Singh’s achievements will turn the ex-PM into a hero at the expense of Rahul Gandhi? AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

T

he Narendra Modi government’s chief economic advisor, Arvind Subramanian, has said that the rate of poverty reduction from 2005-06 to 2011-12 was the fastest in the country’s history. The reason, according to him, was “fast GDP growth”. Rarely before has the Manmohan Singh government received such a handsome compliment on its performance. Although it has been known that an estimated 138 million people were lifted from below the poverty line when the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) was in power, Subramanian’s praise is the first by someone not associated with the present government. What is worth examining, however, is why the Congress itself has been reticent about this achievement although the party’s senior general secretary, Digvijay Singh, a “loose cannon” in his own words, did acknowledge once that millions of the “poorest of the poor” had

been elevated into the lower middle class category because of Manmohan Singh’s “right” policies. Notwithstanding this realization, the Congress has generally been silent about its own government’s excellent record in the matter of poverty reduction whereas one would have thought that it would have been trumpeted by the party during and after the elections. The reason for this quietness cannot be unrelated to the party’s first family’s fear that an acknowledgment of this remarkable feat will,

evidently unacceptable to the Congress. After all, the former was only expected to keep the seat warm for the dauphin and not put up an admirable show of governance.

Although it has been known that an estimated 138 million people were lifted from below the poverty line during the UPA regime, Subramanian’s praise is the first by someone not associated with the present government first, turn the former prime minister into a hero at the expense of the crown prince, Rahul Gandhi, and, secondly, that it will underline the success of the reforms process. The exaltation of the putative “regent” over the heir-apparent was

Moreover, the fact that the poverty reduction tapered off from 201112 would point to the period when Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s aggressive espousal of costly welfare programmes led to the government taking its foot of the accelerator of

Modi tightens PMO functioning ASHOK TANDON, NEW DELHI

N

arendra Modi has brought about a transformation in the day-to-day functioning of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in the last one year. He has changed the work culture by introducing the practice of Kaizen, a time-tested Japanese system of ‘continuous improvement’ in quality, technology, processes, work culture, productivity, efficiency and leadership. Modi has also tried another Japanese practice, that of Quality Management System emphasizing on regular improvement in all departments of the Prime Minister’s establishment. It has cut redtape and made the office respon-

sive, pro-active and effective. The Kaizen principles involve every employee in the PMO —

from Principal Secretary and all IFS, IAS & IPS officers to the subordinate functionaries. The

reforms, as the former finance minister, P. Chidambaram, has said. It will not be besides the point, therefore, to speculate that if Sonia Gandhi hadn’t opted for the various populist measures on the advice of the left-of-center National Advisory Council headed by her, the high growth rates would have led to further poverty reduction and, perhaps, enabled the UPA to return to power for the third time. Yet, sadly for the party, the leftleaning ideological inclinations of the first family, and also of a sizable section of its members, led to its worst-ever defeat. What is strange, however, is that like the proverbial Bourbons of France, the Congress seems to have learnt nothing and forgotten nothword Kaizen means ‘continuous improvement’. It comes from the Japanese words ‘kai’ which means ‘change’ or ‘to correct’ and ‘zen’ which means ‘good’. Everyone in the PMO has been encouraged by the prime minister to come up with suggestions on small and simple improvement. This is not a one-time, monthly or yearly exercise, but something to be practised on a regular basis. As a response, he has been receiving a large number of suggestions from his team members. These ideas are recorded, shared, and discussed and, if found valuable and practical, are implemented by the PMO. In most cases, these suggestions may not be ideas for major changes. Modi strongly believes in making little changes on a regular basis to improve productivity, safety and effectiveness, while reducing wastage in time and

ing. Not only has it refused to recognize the root cause of its defeat — the folly of junking reforms — the party is now determinedly turning even more to the left in a manner which has made finance minister Arun Jaitley mock it for positioning itself on the “left of Marx”. But the Congress will do well to remind itself that the poverty reduction began within a year of its return to power in 2004 not because it was pursuing socialistic policies, but had restarted the reforms process under its original promoter of 1991, Manmohan Singh. What is more, the process took off although the communists, who are dead against pro-market policies, were then an ally of the government. As a result, the reforms proceeded haltingly, as when another ally, the DMK, rejected the move to disinvest the Neyvelli Lignite plant in Tamil Nadu, and subsequently when there was firm opposition by the Trinamool Congress and others to allow foreign investment in the retail sector. Even then, notwithstanding the slow pace of reforms, the lives of the “poorest of the poor” were gradually improving as they moved up into what Modi once called the “neomiddle class” with aspirations to rise further. The Congress, however, still appears to believe that poverty alleviation is best achieved not through economic growth, but by the distribution of doles and subsidies. Behind this belief is probably the calculation that the largesse will be seen as the bounty of the munificent dynasty which presides over the party’s destiny and that gratitude for the benevolence will translate into votes for the Congress. It is this feudal mindset which baulked at the possibility of Manmohan Singh receiving all the applause for lowering poverty rates, thereby making it nearly impossible for Rahul Gandhi to step into his shoes, as was being speculated at the time. expenditure. The staff at PMO has been urged not to limit their suggestions to any specific area of government functioning. They are motivated to come forward with proposals and ideas for making changes wherever improvements are necessary and possible. The western world believes in the work philosophy “If it is not broken, don’t fix it.” Modi’s philosophy for good governance is “Do it better and improve it, even if it isn’t broken, because if we don’t, we can’t compete with those who do.” The prime minister’s ideas on improvement extend even to social activities. He is applying these concepts in his personal life too. (Ashok Tandon was media advisor to former prime minister Atal Bihari Vaypayee. The views expressed are personal.)

hinese authorities were on June 3 still hopeful of finding survivors from a passenger ship that capsized on June 1 night in the Yangtze river, Efe news agency reported. The latest official data pegged the death toll at 18 and survivors at 14 leaving 424 people still missing in what could end up being the worst shipwreck in China’s history. Rescue works were in full swing to locate the more than 400 missing passengers from among the 456 people on board the ship that capsized in the turbulent river during a cyclonic disturbance. “Although it is very difficult, the aim right now is to find the survivors. Indians win Spelling Bee Two Indian-American students jointly lift National Spelling Bee trophy IANS, WASHINGTON

T

wo Indian American students have jointly won the 2015 Scripps National Spelling Bee competition successfully negotiating the words “scherenschnitte” and “nunatak” in a nail-biting final. Vanya Shivashankar, 13, of Olathe, Kansas, and Gokul Venkatachalam, 14, of Chesterfield, Missouri, were declared cochampions on May 27 night. Vanya correctly spelt “scherenschnitte” — meaning the art of cutting paper into decorative designs — and Gokul did likewise with “nunatak” — a hill or mountain completely surrounded by glacial ice. In this year’s national championship, 285 spellers competed for the title. Shivashankar and Venkatachalam put both their hands on the

trophy and thrust it into the air on May 27 evening — after spelling word after word that few people could even hope to pronounce correctly. “This is the second year in a row that the final has yielded cochampions,” Scripps National Spelling Bee said on its website.

“Last year was the first time in 52 years that two people had shared the trophy, and 2015 marks the first time in the bee’s 90-year history that there have ever been co-champions two years in a row. This is only the fifth tie ever.” In the last minutes of the final,

Shivashankar and Venkatachalam “navigated and sometimes breezed through the championship words with poise, like tennis players returning near-impossible shots”, Scripps said in its report on the final. Shivashankar started with “bouquetiere” and Venkatachalam countered with “caudillismo”. “It’s not the first time in this competition he’s proven he can handle a Spanish-derived word,” the announcer from ESPN that covers the event, held in National Harbor in the U.S. state of Maryland, said. Shivshankar then spelled thamakau, a word of Fijian origin that describes a large canoe. Venkatachalam came up with scytale, a message written in a method of cipher used especially by the Spartans. “That’s how good these too are. For most spellers, that would be a nightmare,” the announcer said.

Two NRIs in Forbes’ successful women’s list IANS, NEW YORK

T WASHINGTON: Memories lost due to traumatic brain injury, stress, or diseases such as Alzheimer’s may be retrieved by activating brain cells with light, shows a promising study by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) researchers, including one of Indian-origin. The findings by Dheeraj Roy and colleagues may help answer a fiercely-debated question in neuroscience. Neuroscience researchers have for many years debated whether retrograde amnesia — which follows traumatic injury, stress, or diseases such as Alzheimer’s — is caused by damage to specific brain cells, meaning a memory cannot be stored, or if access to that memory is somehow blocked, preventing its recall. “The majority of researchers have favored the storage theory, but we have shown in this paper that this majority theory is probably wrong,” said Susumu Tonegawa, professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In the study, mice were first trained to associate a mild foot shock with a specific environment, known as chamber A, eliciting a typical “freezing” behavior.

wo Indian-origin women have made it to the Forbes list of America’s 50 most successful and self-made women. India-born Neerja Sethi, 60, is ranked 14th with a net worth of $1.1 billion, while London-born Jayshree Ullal, 54, is ranked 30th with a net worth of $470 million in te inaugural “Most Successful, Self-Made Women in the US” list. Elizabeth Anne Holmes, CEO of blood diagnostics company Theranos, tops the list with a net worth of $4.5 billion. According to Forbes magazine, “to be eligible for this list, women had to have substantially made their own fortunes. In cases where they started businesses with, and still share with, their husbands,

$30,000 in revenue. Today, its market cap is well over $3 billion,” Forbes stated in her profile. “Sethi served as Syntel’s treasurer during its first 16 years of operations and is currently the vicepresident of corporate affairs, a role she has had since the company’s inception,” it added.

Indian-American scientist Mohan finds new way for kidney diagnosis IANS, WASHINGTON

A

n Indian-American scientist and his colleague have identified a new, less-invasive method to provide diagnostic information on kidney disease and its severity. They used an optical probe and Raman spectroscopy to differentiate between healthy and diseased kidneys. “There are some molecules that must be responsible for these different Raman signals, but we don’t need to know what those molecules may be,” said Chandra Mohan, professor at University of

Houston in the US. “As long as there’s a difference in the signal, that’s good enough — Chandra Mohan you can easily differentiate between a diseased kidney’s Raman signal and a healthy kidney’s Raman signal,” Mohan said. For the study, Mohan and his colleague Wei-Chuan Shih, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, relied upon the fact that a healthy kidney and a diseased kidney produce different Raman signals.

SHORT TAKES Kuchipudi recital to raise funds WASHINGTON: Indian-American teenager from the US state of Ohio will be giving a recital of an Indian classical dance to raise funds for research on the rare Sandhoff disease, media reported. Ria Datla, 17, in memory of her younger brother who died due to Sandhoff disease, will be performing the Kuchipudi “Rangapravesam” — a classical Indian dance from Andhra Pradesh -- to raise at least $10,000 and awareness for the disease, online daily Cincinnati Enquirer reported on June 2. Nearly $4,000 in donations have already been collected.

Indian-origin cop faces trial for sexual assault WASHINGTON: A court in the US state of Massachusetts has started trial of a police officer of Indian descent, who was charged with sexual assault in 2014. Rajat Sharda, 33, while on duty, allegedly sexually assaulted a 29-year-old Connecticut woman in August 2013, threatening her not to report the incident, which was reported in February 2014. The woman testified in court that on August 6, 2013, night she was inside a parked sports utility vehicle (SUV), undressed, with her boyfriend Michael Betancourt when officer Sharda approached the vehicle and asked her to step outside the SUV. “He was asking me what I’d be willing to do to not be arrested,” she stated in court. After handcuffing Betancourt, Sharda sexually assaulted and threatened the woman, before leaving from the location. The first police officer of Indian descent on the Worchester, Sharda was removed from service in Sept 2014 and was charged with sexual assault, open and gross lewdness, witness intimidation.

Street View lets one explore places around the world through 360-degree, panoramic and streetlevel imagery.

While it has been extensively used in US, Canada and many European countries, its applications in India have been limited so

far. Google has launched Street View in some of the tourist sites like Taj Mahal, and Qutub Minar in partnership with the Archaeological Society of India. Google is in talks with the union home ministry to get their permissions for conducting the Street View exercise at a city wide level. This permission is expected to be given shortly. “Upon the request made by the minister, Google has agreed to make Telangana the first state which will get Street View for one complete city namely Hyderabad to begin with, with subsequent extension to other major cities and towns,” said the statement. Google has also agreed to support specific requests made by the

minister to utilize Street View for monitoring of deviations from approved building plans, property tax collection, and mapping of industrial land bank located in different parts of the state. The delegation led by the minister explained the Google team about the water grid project and how the same duct lines are going to be utilized to provide fiber optic cables to every household. Google has embarked on a similar project called Google Fiber, which has been piloted in eight cities in the US. It has agreed to study the Telangana model in detail through their country team in India and explore the possibility of contributing to this project, the statement added.

BCCI ropes in batting legends Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman join BCCI advisory committee IANS, MUMBAI

B

atting legends Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and V.V.S. Laxman were named to the newlyformed advisory cricket committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on June 1. “The president of the BCCI, Jagmohan Dalmiya, has nominated Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and V.V.S. Laxman as esteemed members of the Cricket advisory committee of the BCCI, with immediate effect,” the BCCI said in a statement. The trio’s “areas of immediate focus will be to provide guidance to our national team as we set out to enhance our performance on overseas engagements, provide direction to improve our talent pathway and take steps to strengthen domestic cricket to better prepare our players to handle the rigors of international cricket”, the BCCI statement added.

From left: Former players Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman.

Many feel the inclusion of former captains Ganguly, Tendulkar and ex-vice captain Laxman — who have a combined experience of 447 Tests among them — is a big move as India head into a critical phase where their Test team will be led by young batsman Virat Kohli, while in the shorter formats Mahendra Singh Dhoni will con-

tinue to lead the side. In the last couple of years, India’s Test performance has been marked by overseas series losses in England, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand that resulted in India dropping to the fourth spot in the Test rankings. They were the No.1 team from December 2009, till August 2011.

“I am happy to note that our eminent cricketers have come forward to lend their experience and insights as we work towards a common goal of taking Indian cricket to greater heights,” Dalmiya said on June 1. “The coming generations are bound to benefit from the guidance that will be provided by these lumi-

Champions League final Ravi Shastri appointed team director for Bangladesh tour is a special game: Messi IANS, MUMBAI

BARCELONA: Barcelona Argentine star Leo Messi underlined that his teammates “have suffered a lot” to finally reach to the UEFA Champions League final on May 31 against Juventus in Berlin, and so he is thinking only about this clash. “It is a Champions League final and we have suffered a lot to get here. We know that it won’t be easy to be champions again,” Messi told UEFA’s media service. “The anthem lets you know that it is a different game, a special game for the competition,” the four-time FIFA Ballon d’Or winner added, Efe news agency reported. “We are playing against a very difficult and powerful opponent. It is a final where anything can happen, but we will prepare in the same way we did for the previous finals,” Messi said. Messi recalled his two goals scored in the two finals of the Champions League against Manchester United in Rome (2009) and London (2011), which were decisive in the team’s victory. “They are very significant parts of my career. The first one because we practically finished the game and were lifting the cup at 2-0. The second one because it made it 2-1 at a point where the game was well-balanced and that is why I celebrated so wildly,” he explained. The Argentine star promised that Barca would prepare to its best capability the final, as usual.

T

he Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on June 2 extended former captain Ravi Shastri’s role as the national team director till the end of the Bangladesh tour. One Test match and three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) are scheduled for the 16-day tour that begins from June 10. “The BCCI wishes to inform that Ravi Shastri, former India captain, has been appointed as director of the Indian cricket team for the tour of Bangladesh, starting on 10 June,” BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur said. naries and will go a long way in strengthening our existing system.” The three former cricketers, who played for India from 1989 till 2013, are also expected to have their say on the selection of coaches. Interestingly, the BCCI is yet to appoint a new head coach following Duncan Fletcher’s departure and the absence of former captain Rahul Dravid from the advisory committee, has fuelled further rumors. BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur said: “On behalf of all my colleagues in the BCCI, I thank Sachin, Sourav and Laxman for having accepted our invitation to be part of this prestigious committee, and I am confident that their invaluable advice will help Indian cricket regain its leadership position in all formats of the game.” “Their participation augurs well for the future of the game in our country and the noble intention to ‘give back to the game’ is commendable,” Anurag added.

‘Always dreamt to lead Team India’ NEW DELHI: India’s Test captain Virat Kohli has said he never dreamt of taking up the mantle of captaincy at a young age, and added that as a kid he only dreamt of playing in the biggest format of the game for his country. Kohli, 26, was named the captain of the Test team after the sudden retirement of Mahendra Singh Dhoni from the longest format of the game during India’s series against Australia last year. Dhoni retired after the third Test in Melbourne of a four-match series. Australia won the series 2-0 but Kohli was one of the most prominent performers of the series, scoring runs and leading the team with an aggressive intent.

At 60, Mani Ratnam continues to inspire As filmmaker Mani Ratnam turns 60, he continues to be source of inspiration for those associated with filmmaking HARICHARAN PUDIPEDDI, CHENNAI

I

n his illustrious career of over two decades, filmmaker Mani Ratnam, who turns 60 on June 2, has not only touched and entertained thousands of lives with his movies, he has also inspired a whole generation of directors, writers, editors, music composers and several others from different crafts of cinema. And he continues to do so. For filmmaker R.S. Prasanna, Ratnam’s Iruvar, which was about the relationship between cinema and politics in Tamil Nadu, is his ‘Bhagwad Gita’ on filmmaking. “I think the kind of filmmaking that was done in the movie was world-class, and it was a biopic that was very different from ‘Nayagan’ in terms of the narrative style. In ‘Iruvar’, there was a lot of international influence in terms of shots and angles,” Prasanna told IANS. “It was one movie where everything came together so brilliantly. It’s such an underrated movie and sadly. it didn’t do well at the box office.,” he said, and added that it was Iruvar that brought him and his debut film’s cinematographer Krishnan Vasant together. Mani Ratnam’s tryst as film director began with the 1983 project Pallavi AnuPallavi, and there has been no looking back ever since. He produces most of his films, and has surprisingly, not assisted anyone. Recalling his memorable experience of a Mani Ratnam film, actor Rahul Ravindran said it was his Nayagan that sowed his acting seeds. “My earliest memory of

Makers of ‘Kashmora’ use 360-degree camera rig CHENNAI: The makers of actor Karthi-starrer Tamil romantic-drama Kashmora claim theirs is the first Indian film to use a 360-degree omni-directional camera rig for shooting a particular sequence. “First time we are using 360degree omnidirectional camera rig for a particular sequence. Initially, plans were made to make use of computer generated work for this sequence, but we later came across this wonderful technology that we thought we could make use of for a perfect output,” the film’s director Gokul said in a statement. “It is a multiple camera rig with a 360-degree field of view in the horizontal plane, or with a visual field that covers (approximately) the entire sphere. Omnidirectional cam-

eras are important in areas where large visual field coverage is needed, such as in panoramic photography,” he said. According to a source from the film’s unit, this camera is being used to shoot the introductory song in the movie along with some action scenes. The film also features Nayantara and Sri Divya in important roles.

falling in love with the medium and actually being conscious and aware that I was falling in love and fascinated with the movies, was when I watched Nayagan as a child,” Rahul said. “A part of me changed irrevocably the day I watched it. I didn’t realise what it was that fascinated me, but just remember experiencing a sense of heightened excitement... The realization was more subliminal. Now I know that it was perhaps

because the film was so searingly original in tone, so unique and new in execution compared to any film I had seen till that point,” he added. It was that day, Rahul said, the seeds were sown. He eventually quit a corporate job and came to cinema to try his luck. Sound designer Kunal Rajan said it was Mani Ratnam’s Aayutha Ezhuthu, which had music by A.R. ‘Massu Engira...’ : Regular revenge drama with spooky twist

V

enkat’s latest outing ‘Massu...’ with Suriya is a decent entertainer. It’s not a bad film, but neither is it great. With a highly talented star like Suriya, it’s a shame to make a film that merely pleases audiences because then it could’ve been made without him in the first place. The film opens with a heist, and Suriya aka Massu is introduced as a conman. Soon, there’s another heist scene followed by an introductory song. In the middle of the song, we’re introduced to Malini, played by Nayantara, and Massu falls for her instantly. This is followed by a

Film: Massu Engira Masilamani; Cast: Suriya, Nayantara, Pranitha Subhash, Samuthirakani, Parthepan and Premgi Amaren; Director: Venkat Prabhu; Rating: **1/2 few scenes of stalking and like we don’t know it, the director had the heroine’s best friend tell her that she’s been followed. He follows her in the bus, on the road and at bus stops. It gets predictable from here and there’s not a single worthy scene in the first twenty minutes. Then, there’s an accident and the

story kicks in. The premise is borrowed from Peter Jackson’s The Frighteners, but Venkat does that with most of his films. He borrows an idea from the west and adapts it well to suit local sensibilities and appeal to our audiences. The paranormal twist in Massu... is what keeps you interested but there are too many twists; some predictable and some good. There’s a wonderful twist featuring Premgi Amaren and this could’ve been stretched and revealed much later. Another twist featuring the second Suriya comes in the second half and though it works to an extent, it’s too

late to cheer. Nayantara and Pranitha have no contribution to make. The former plays a nurse, and if nurses in hospitals were as charmingly beautiful as her, nobody would mind falling sick regularly. If only these heroines understood the meaning of getting into the skin of their characters...! Massu... is essentially a regular revenge drama and it’s quite possible that Prabhu may have started writing it as one and along the way got inspired by The Frighteners. Again, it’s a great idea that doesn’t actually get made into a great film. — Haricharan Pudipeddi

‘Ishqedarriyaan’: An oft-seen love story

W

ith all the tropes of the romance genre weaved into it, Ishqedarriyaan is a typical contrived, mushy and predictable tale of a Prince Charming and a damsel in distress. The Prince here is the young, 20something, soft-hearted, multi-billionaire Agam Diwan, who is in love with his passion and career. Settled in Georgia in the U.S., he is an enigma that the media houses want to unravel. An investigative journalist, who believes that “behind every fortune, there is a crime”, he delves into his family history and surfaces with their dodgy past. This lead brings Agam Diwan to India. He lands in Himachal Pradesh, where he meets Loveleen, the daughter of the man, his father is supposed to have cheated. She is in desperate need of funds and teachers to run the Abhinandan Vidya Mandir, a school founded by her grandfather. During their first meeting, instead of initially hearing him out, she mistakes him for a teacher and appoints him. He willingly obliges. Tables turn. He now works for her and they share an employer-employee relationship. Soon, they become friends. He is her messiah in disguise. He ensures that every wish of hers is fulfilled by playing ‘god’ in her life. He falls in love with her and realizes that she is besotted with Arjun, a promising musician. Mahaakshay, who has a fairly appealing screen presence with a slightly weak voice, charms you as the restrained loverboy Agam. Actor-singer Mohit Dutta, who has a limited screen time, is impressionable and essays the role of Arjun in style. While all the characters are realistically portrayed and the performances by the cast are relatable, it is the predictable story and lazily crafted screenplay by P.K. Anil that make this film a mediocre fare. It is irritating to see the oversmart character Ladoo, come up with frivolous cliched filmi dialogues. It is the only sore point of the film.

When Celina felt threatened by Sunny’s behavior

T

he scorching heat seems to have taken a toll on Alia Bhatt’s health. The unwell actress is just hating it. “Aaaaah under the weather and how!!!! Hate being sick photoshoooooot today (Sunday). Eventually only the camera can cheer me up,” Alia posted on Twitter. The 22-year-old earlier told IANS that one should “drink a lot of water and stay hydrated” to beat the scorching heat in summer season. “I have atleast five liters of water a day. I also eat a lot of fruits, it fills me up and gives me energy that I need. I have a lot of nimbu paani (lime water). To keep the body cool, I have sabja seeds (sweet basil seeds) with milk,” added the actress, who will be seen sharing screen space with her mother Soni Razdan for the first time in an ad campaign of Garnier Fructis Oil-InCream. Alia will next be seen in the upcoming film, Shaandaar, which will release on September 4. The young and versatile film talent has teamed up with her mother Soni Razdan to feature in an advertisement to promote Garnier Fructis Oil-InCream, a haircare product. The Highway actress says she has fond memories of her mother giving her an oil massage.

A

pparently, the actress and her husband appalled Celina, their landlady, with their ways… Sunny Leone is desired by many and there are some who aspire to be her too. She flew down from a foreign land and became everyone’s darling. But it seems Celina Jaitly has a different view of Sunny and her husband Daniel Weber. According to her interview with a leading daily, the couple gave her a harrowing time when they were asked to empty Celina’s penthouse. They

were staying there on rent. Celina told the daily that she helped the couple get a house on lease when no one was ready to touch them due to their past. Apparently, they behaved in a way that Celina felt was threatening and sickening. She was forced to take a legal action to safeguard her rights and make them stick to the contract. Sunny on her part defended herself by saying that everyone is aware of her Juhu residence. They left it last year back when the contract ended.

Emraan Hashmi’s pre-kissing ritual

E

mraan Hashmi earned the title of Bollywood’s ‘serial kisser’, but the actor says he sticks to a pre-kissing ritual to get a scene right — he avoids berries! In an episode of Farah Ki Daawat, hosted by choreographer-filmmaker Farah Khan, the Jannat actor shared that before a kissing scene in his movies, he avoids eating any kind of berries because he is allergic to them. But he recounted having garlic just before one such scene, just to get back at an actress. And no, he didn’t take any names! The actor also shared that his best kiss has been with a dog instead of any actress. “Best kiss was when my dog licked my face,” he quipped.

Ranveer is now calmer, less anxious: Anushka

A

ctress Anushka Sharma, who worked with Ranveer Singh in the 2010 film Band Baaja Baaraat, says he is now a calmer and less anxious person as compared to his earlier days. “When we worked together for Band Baaja Baaraat, Ranveer used to be very anxious and hyper on set. He used to do weird things, but now he is calmer, less anxious. He’s a better actor now,” Anushka said during a chat show to promote Dil Dhadakne Do. Apart from Ranveer and Anushka, the film features Farhan Akhtar, Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah and Priyanka Chopra.

TIME FOR CG OFFICE TO WAKE UP AFTER HEADLEY EPISODE

D

hi india team

avid Coleman Headley, an American terrorist of Pakistani origin, and a spy who conspired with the Lashkar-e-Taiba Islamist organization and Pakistani Intelligence officers in plotting the 26/11 2008 Mumbai attacks, has written a memoir in prison while serving a 35-year term. A leaked portion of the memoir regarding attack on Mumbai, siege and massacre for three days and the crucial role played by him and Tahawwur Rana in surveying, scouting and selecting the sites and places for landing and attack is now an open secret. It also reveals the shoddy way in which the Indian consulate officials work. Indeed, the unfortunate killings would have been avoidable if—and a big if at that time at the very beginning, the applications for Rana and Headley’s ten years’ visa were scrutinized properly and no recommendation was entertained. If only the first visa grant could have been only for the shortest period (six months). Well, this brought Hi India to review and obtain comments, concerns and complaints about the services provided and procedures SEVENTY BLANK PASSPORT BOOKS WERE STOLEN/LOST FROM BLS INTERNATIONAL IN followed at Indian consulates in the US. SAN FRANCISCO IN 2014. SULEKHA.COM: They have reported about horrible attitude, bad management and royalty like behavior of Indian Consulate officials. They referred the trip to Indian Consulate as A journey to hell. The consulate corridors are seem to be free passage to many--these people can go, visit and get their work done without any appointment, enter consulate office -- ( which is a serious security issue as well) and it puts a lot of undue pressure on junior staff/the people who handle the important documents such as passports, visas, OCIs and PIOs. One of those persons is of tainted background and was once indicted by the FBI for involving in preparing and selling fraudulent US documents such as Green card, social security cards, driver licenses and other US documents forgery. Though this person is of either Pakistan or Bangladesh origin, he was selling the tickets online for Indian Ambassador’s visit in Chicago. This gives an impression that he calls the shots and proves his proximity to Consulate Officials. In 2014, US Customs and Immigration Services intercepted a person of Indian origin carrying the fake insignias of Indian Consulate officials.

The Indian Consulate botched up the investigation of this highly-sensitive material (made in India and smuggled to the US) for generating fraudulent documents, notarization of documents and many unknown reasons for conducting fraud. A very meek complaint was made to US Diplomatic Security division, which has less scope of investigation and the courier of such material was allowed to go after initial interview and was treated as innocent carrier for someone else. It was a cooked-up story hard to believe and the case was filed as a stray incident, a stray occurrence. The hard and alert work done by US Customs and Immigration officials to prevent any potential damage to India went down the drain. The Consulate office did not pursue this matter to reach at the bottom. Seventy blank passport books were stolen/lost from BLS International in San Francisco in 2014. The BLS International office in New York has also a deeper role to play in passport issuance to non-qualified people. Informed sources have told Hi India that Mr. Vaidya and a middleman, Ashok Patel, can do any magic as far as issuing the passport is concerned, of course, for a right price. It is a general conception that it’s much easier to get passport in the US than in India. The new visa services were handed over to Cox and Kings in 2014 who were not fully operational and fully equipped to handle. The result was that for many months, either their system was overloaded or was out of order. Cox and Kings recruited many of the BLS bad apples and temporary workers of Consulate, who were aware how the parallel system works. The BLS and Cox and Kings though have reduced the service charges, but they charge exorbitantly for other allied services such as photo copies etc to catch up on lost revenue, as they bid very low to obtain the deal. list of do’s and don’ts left by past Consul Generals? Does CG has no substantial issue, matter or anything of substance to share with media to inform the community at large? QQConsul General office still recommends exceptions and exemptions in issuing visas and PIOs cards for either nonresident of territorial states or is it either of the parent was not Indian.. Is it true? QQWhy Consulate has list of favorite people who are visible in all the Consulate events whether it concerns them or not? QQYou are best known as the person who cleaned up the Hyderabad passport office from all the touts and agents. But why we have not seen this magic in Chicago so far? QQWill the consulate office abandon the custom and protocol of acting on the list and instructions left behind by the previous CG? QQ On many occasions, including, the Goa Tourism event, Consulate has highlighted other airlines—Etihad Airways rather than Air India. This not only irked Air India officials at large, but also compromised national carrier’s market position. QQIn contrast to general protocol of Consulate offices, why the Indian Consulate has no security provisions or why doors to main office are open all the time compromising security and safety of Consulate of its officials? This article is relevant as no lesson has been learnt from visa grant to Headley and Rana as no visa and no reconnaissance mission of the sites might have been possible. The onus for Mumbai mayhem somehow falls on the then Consul General of India in Chicago. The purpose of this report not to take a shot on CG office, but a compilation of many complaints, concerns, suggestions and frustrations based on many interviews and comments of many in the Indian Diaspora in Chicagoland area.

of uniting people through music and India’s rich culture and heritage, especially in Gujarati communities worldwide. Through the theme of “Gunvanti Gujarat” to celebrate “Gujarat Din” OHMkara organized evening of sugam, kavya and lok sangeet with beautifullydecorated, state-of-the art auditorium at Al Falaj Hotel in Muscat and Consulate General’s office in Dubai. This was the biggest Gujarati music evening in Muscat. It was a Gujarati music concert of life-time where one of the most versatile Gujarati music

legends, the late Avinash Vyas’s evergreen and famous songs were performed for more than four hours under one roof. Present on the occasion were two living legends of Gujarati music and “Bhishma Pitamah” Gaurang Vyas and Purushottam Upadhyay, performing from one stage for the first time outside of India. The young, talented and dynamic singers Bhaumik Shah, Aanal Vasavada, Divyang Anjaria, Himali Vyas and Praher Vora superbly performed with some old famous and some new religious and romantic numbers.More than 40 original Gujarati songs beautifully

sung in presence of a houseful audience with Ambassador J.S. Mukul in the audience. e talented musicians like Mayur Dave, Ritesh Upadhyay, Manish Kansara, Manishi Rawal and Shreyas Dave provided such an amazing music that the audience started dancing and clapping. Purushottam Upadhyay’s melodious numbers mesmerized the people who reached the floor doing garba. Gaurang Vyas, in his versatile style, sang the original sports song “hu tu tu tu, jami ramat ni rutu” which received a standing ovation from the audience. The OHMkara Team led by community leader Pinakin Pathak included Tushar Patel, Ashish Mehta, Deepak Trivedi, Nishil Parikh and Kalpana Mehta who worked very hard to plan this show in Muscat. The team promised to repeat the same commitment and dedication just to keep the Gujarati language and music alive in the US and across the world this year. Pathak promised to reach out to all Gujaratis to bring them under one roof irrespective of their political, social or religious affiliations. The US tour of “Saat Suro Na Sarname” – Avinashi Avinash – Avinash Vyas Mahotsav is being held from May 29 through June 27 in eight states in 13 cities throughout the US.

50TH PATEL BROTHERS GROCERY STORE IN NJ BY A STAFF WRITER AST WINDSOR, NJ-- Patel Brothers, undisputed king of the Indian grocery business in the United States, opened its recordbreaking 50th grocery store in East Windsor, New Jersey on May 28. Several prominent leaders of the community joined in the ribbon-cutting ceremony performed by Mayor Janice S. Mironov as a large crowd applauded the opening and rushed in the store to take advantage of the unprecedented grand inaugural sale. Mironov was accompanied by her three distinguished councilmen Peter Yeager, Alan Rosenberg and John Zella. Also present were Mafat Patel and Tulsi Patel, successful founders of Patel Brothers since 1974, along with Mahendra Patel, Kaushik Patel, Rakesh and Deep Patel and other family members. Mafat Patel, patriarch of the everexpanding Patel grocery empire across America, welcomed the Mayor and other distinguished guests. After graduating in electrical engineering, Mafat Patel started his first store of 900 square feet in Chicago, IL in 1974, and

Patel Brothers founded by Mafat Patel opened its grocery store in East Windsor, NJ

within 41 years, Patel Brothers now have 50 stores in the US and fours in Canada. The East Windsor store is about 23,000 square feet with state-of-the-art technology, great illumination, ample parking and just minutes away to the new proposed BAPS Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple location in Robbinsville, New Jersey. The Mayor addressed the gathering by saying that she was delighted to have such an industry giant in the Indian grocery business in East Windsor for its historymaking 50th store. She expressed the hope that it would not only serve the vast and vibrant Indian

community in the neighborhood but also would provide a great stimulus to other ethnic communities to buy fresh fruits, vegetables, milk and other items at a very reasonable cost. Mironov and her councilmen took a tour of the expansive store. She was very much impressed by master planning, cleanliness and a variety of grocery items. Rakesh Patel and Deep Patel, the young Patel Brothers clan, had the honor and privilege to dream and materialize such stores. The store is located at 72 Princeton Hightstown Road, (In Target Shopping Center) East Windsor, NJ.

HICAGO, IL -- Eye on In d i a a n d Te a m w o r k Arts are organizing the 5th annual Eye on India Festival during May 28-June 28. From cinema, visual art and music, to fashion, dance and yoga, Eye on India showcases the best of contemporary and traditional Indian art in a variety of locations across the city. More than 12 events are planned, and each will be co-presented by arts, business, and community partner organizations throughout Chicago. Eye on India Festival’s Chicagoan president Anuradha Behari was inspired to create the festival after attending the Jaipur Literature Festival, one of the largest of its kind in the world. She says she wished to replicate this spirit of collaboration and discovery, and share the depth and breadth of modern India in her hometown.

egional cuisines and Indian fusion dishes will be the flavor of the coming year, as will the effort to wean away children from junk food, says chef Sanjay Thomas who has just come on board The Suryaa Hotel here as its F&B (food and beverages) director. “There’ll be no more multi-cuisine restaurants. It started with international restaurants. Then there were global restaurants. All that’s passe. You’ll be seeing more of regional cuisine,” Thomas told IANS over a specially-crafted sixcourse dinner that started with a just-right chilled Fronter white wine from Chile. “Global cuisine is only touching the tip. Increasingly, you’ll be seeing more and more of regional cuisines from specific regions of countries like China and France. “There may even be two or three

cuisines. You get a chef from the region and, voila, you are in business,” said Thomas, who in his 21year working life has served in places as far as the Seychelles, Kuwait, Muscat, Salalah (Dhofar) and Dubai, as the amouse bouche starter — a mid-sized prawn with red chilli flakes accompanied by a fetta-mellon cube wrapped in cucumber, was served up. “Indian fusion could also be a big thing. on the table. It’s a ‘tadka marke’ with an enormous cut of panthing, but it is fun,” said the chef as the appetizer, summer seared salmon with yellow pepper greens with cherry tomato — coulis, a little soy souce and a curl mango galette, eggplant caponata of pickled ginger. with the glass being constantly topped up, and the pickle perfectly complementing the flavor of the salmon. It was then time for a “cleansing” break — or rather, two. The first was a tangy citrus mint granite and Thomas explained that it was crafted of dried mint roasted over a tandoor so that its flavor gets concentrated. The other was equally ingenious — a slice of dragon fruit accompanied by a gin-laced apple mojito.

The chef’s final offering was a slow braised lamb shank with shallots and roasted garlic pea mash. And, if the proof of the pudding is in the eating, picture this: the meat came off the bone with effortless ease and was a soft and tender chew. “We braize it with onions in a low-temperature oven for one-anda-half to two hours. It cooks in its own juices except for the wine glazing so that its aroma is trapped within,” Thomas explained. After all this gorging, there was barely room for the dessert but the spiced chocolate soup that was served was just irresistible — kiwi and other summer fruit in a ball of white chocolate over which a generous layer of warm chocolate syrup was poured and a wedge of chikoo and almond ice cream. Perfecto!

yes are said to be the windows to your soul, so enhance and accentuate them without using makeup. Makeup artist Nirmal Randhawa, owner of Indica Makeover studio, shares a few steps to look great and gorgeous sans the conventional eye beautification: Following basic eye skin care: Applying facial cream to eyelids is helpful because it will keep them moisturized. However, one should be careful to not get the cream into eyes. Splashing the eyes with generous amount of cold water will not only make one’s eyes feel cool but will also help eyes look refreshed. Place cold tea bags under each eye. This will help to tighten the skin. Taking adequate rest and sleep

for at least eight hours is a must to keep eyes glowing. Framing the eyes: Having well-groomed brow is a must as eyebrows frame the eyes and draw attention. It’s actually like having an instant mini “face lift”. To add glamorous touch to the eyes one can apply petroleum jelly on fingertips and brush it up against the lashes.

NEW YORK: Drinking green tea may help prevent prostate cancer in men, suggests a research led by an Indianorigin scientist. The researchers, led by Nagi Kumar from Moffitt Cancer Center in the US, assessed the safety and effectiveness of the active components in green tea to prevent prostate cancer development in men who have premalignant lesions. The researchers administered decaffeinated green tea capsules called Polyphenon E that contained a mixture of green tea substance called “catechins” twice a day. Laboratory studies have shown that catechins inhibit cancer cell growth, motility and invasion, and stimulate cancer cell death.

The researchers compared the effects of Polyphenon E in 49 men to placebo tablets in 48 men over a one year treatment period. The researchers found that people who had taken the green tea capsule had a significant decrease in prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels. PSA is a biomarker that in combination with other risk factors is used to screen patients for prostate cancer, and high levels signify a higher risk of prostate cancer. Green tea catechins also prevent and reduce tumor growth in animal models, the study noted. 20 percent of green tea is consumed in Asian countries where prostate cancer death rates are among the lowest in the world, the researchers said.

New fitness app lets you compete with others

“An option is to convert the western commode to semi-squat position by keeping a stool under the feet,” Batra said. In fact, a new book titled ‘Charming Bowels by Giulia Enders has buttressed the claim that humans should be squatting, not sitting, on a toilet bowl. This is because the closure mechanism of the gut is not designed to “open the hatch completely” when we are sitting down or standing up: it is like a kinked hose. Squatting is far more natural and puts less pressure on our bottoms. “Nearly 1.2 billion people around the world who squat have almost no incidence of diverticulosis and fewer problems with piles. We in the west, on the other hand, we squeeze our gut tissue until it comes out of our bottoms,” she writes.

new fitness app can give your workout schedule a real edge as it lets you compete with friends who use different fitness trackers. If all your friends use fitness trackers different from yours, you can match your steps with the rest of the group. “The online platform ‘Matchup’ lets users of different fitness trackers — including Fitbit, Jawbone and Withings — compete against each other in the same place, launched its free mobile app for iPhone this week,” reported The

Observer. “It is rare that an entire group of friends, family, or coworkers share the same devices,” Matchup cofounder John Contreras was quoted as saying. “With Matchup, we create an opportunity for a group of users with various devices to connect and join challenges together.” The app offers a variety of ways for users to compete with each other. “This transparency makes it easy for users to support each other with nudges in case someone is beginning to fall into sedentary patterns, Contreras said.
