Obama vows to control gun culture The US President says he has asked his administration to look into what can be done to enforce the existing laws more effectively to keep guns out of the hands of criminals ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

ith Republican controlled Congress unwilling to act on his call to enact tough gun laws, President Barack Obama vowed to keep talking about it and explore what he could do on his own. “I’m going to talk about this on a regular basis. And I will politicize this. Because our inaction is a political decision that we’re making,” Obama said at a White House press conference a day after the massacre at a Oregon community college on October 1 left 10 people dead and as many injured. “Unless we change that political dynamic, we’re not going to be able to make a big dent in this problem,” he said asking gun-control advocates to act as “single-issue voters,” punishing and rewarding politicians at the polls on the topic. India has great global power potential: US

WASHINGTON: With President Barack Obama looking at India as a potential great global power in the 21st century, US wants to deepen its economic, political, and security cooperation with New Delhi. “Our relationship with India is strong, growing,” State Department Spokesperson Mark Toner told reporters here on October 6 in response to a question about the

Among the incidents included in the CNN compilation was the August 5, 2012 massacre at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin where an American white supremacist shot six Sikh worshippers dead. According to Everytown for Gun Safety, a gun-control group founded by NY City’s former mayor Michael Bloomberg, 88 people are killed by gun violence in America each day.

on their support for its cause. Obama said he has asked his administration to look into “what kinds of authorities do we have to enforce the laws that we have in place more effectively to keep guns out of the hands of criminals.” He also criticized Republican presidential hopeful Jeb Bush for his comments that “stuff happens.”

WASHINGTON: Gun violence in America has claimed a thousand times more lives than Americans killed through terrorist attacks in a decade, yet the country refuses to pass tough gun laws in the face of a powerful gun lobby. Using numbers from the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, CNN reported that 316,545 people died by firearms on US soil from 2004 to 2013 — a thousand times more than 313 killed by terrorism. During the same period, 277 US citizens were killed overseas as a result of incidents of terrorism, according to the US State Department. Another 36 people were killed in domestic acts of terrorism bringing the total to 313.

As President Barack “Obama said, India has the potential to be one of the great global powers in the 21st century, so we want to see our cooperation deepen both economically, politically, and on security issues as well,” Toner said. In response to another question about the India-Pakistan relationship, he said: “It’s absolutely critical to achieving peace and stability in South Asia.” On terrorism, the spokesperson said, “Obviously, it’s a shared concern not just between our country and India... but obviously, for many countries in that region.”

ndia’s master blaster Sachin Tendulkar who is eyeing America as the next target in his mission to spread cricket, said he would like to see more Americans picking up cricket bats along with baseball bats. “You’ll only learn things if you give them a try,” said Tendulkar who will lead a 10-day, three-city cricket all-star exhibition tour of the US in November with fellow cricket legend Shane Warne of Australia. “Americans are used to watching baseball, and it’s very similar to that,” he told Time magazine.

“If Americans can start coming to the stadium, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them following cricket from here on.” The tour’s impact, Tendulkar said, will be measured by how many it inspires. “I’m not just looking forward to this trip but to my next trip,” he said. “I would like to see how many more people have picked up a cricket bat alongside a baseball bat. Because that means we left an impression behind. That’s something I want to do,” he said. “America will be curious to see what it’s like to experience the game of cricket,” said Warne.

rime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Angela Merkel on October 6 sought to give a new direction to bilateral ties by strengthening economic and business links as Indian and German companies signed five agreements and automotive giant Bosch announced Rs.6.5 billion investments in India. Modi exhorted German industry to invest and ‘Make in India’ for a growing domestic market and huge export markets the world over, while Merkel exuded great confidence that ties would see a quantum leap. Flagging the opportunities, ranging from building 50 million houses to setting up 100 smart cities, Modi said German investors and companies could also explore modernization of the vast state-run railway network and stations to setting up of new railway corridors. “Generation of 175 giga watt of renewable energy to construction of transmission and distribution networks, national highways, bridges, and metro rails are among the investment opportunities beckoning the robust German industry,” he said. rowing faster than other major emerging market economies, India’s growth is expected to strengthen from 7.3 percent this year and last year to 7.5 percent next year, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). “Growth will benefit from recent policy reforms, a consequent pickup in investment, and lower commodity prices,” the IMF said in latest World Economic Outlook (WEO) released Tuesday ahead of the World Bank-IMF annual meetings in Lima (Peru). The WEO foresees lower global growth compared to last year, with modest pickup in advanced economies and a slowing in emerging markets, primarily reflecting weakness in some large emerging economies and oil exporting countries. Global real GDP grew at 3.4

percent last year, and is forecast to grow at only 3.1 percent this year. Growth is expected to rebound to 3.6 percent next year and increase beyond 2016. One of the key factors in this is the gradual increase in the global weight of fast-growing countries such as China and India, which further increases their importance as drivers of global growth, the WEO said. In India, near-term growth

prospects remain favorable, and the decrease in the current account deficit has lowered external vulnerabilities, it said. Inflation is expected to decline further in 2015, reflecting the fall in global oil and agricultural commodity prices. The faster-than expected decline in inflation has created space for considering modest cuts in the nominal policy rate, IMF said.

Is Silicon Valley the right model for Indian start-ups? While Silicon Valley’s demonstrated ability to create global tech companies is laudable, the context of India, our social structure, regulatory understanding and our problems must be understood differently RAVI KIRAN, MUMBAI

T

here is a pattern around Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to many a foreign shore. A visit gets announced, media starts building up some excitement and collecting bytes, people quickly take sides and soon, we have quotes full of wisdom, advice and comments from many an expert. As the prime minister arrives in the foreign land, a section of Indian diaspora feel genuinely touched by the ‘historic’ visit, cultural events get organized, yoga gets promoted, Bharat Mata gets her due slogans, media thrusts ‘How do you feel?’ mikes to local people’s lips, the prime minister’s comments are reported with excitement by our media here and more bytes are taken. This last trip was not much different. From the Indian start-ups, innovation and venture ecosystem viewpoint, however, it was. While start-up founders may not care much about a permanent seat on UNSC for India, debates on sustainability and the like, they do care about Silicon Valley. Whether you are designing a low-

heat mobile battery or an IoT device for agricultural applications or building the latest hyperlocal vegetable delivery service for north Thrissur, ‘the Valley’ is one of those terms which has been driven into your mind where it has found its secure place of worship. How much of that excitement has borne fruit and how much of what

the prime minister’s visit achieved will be good for our start-ups? Visits like this and meetings with the super-CEOs have a lot of symbolic value and would certainly be good for us in the long run, no doubt about that. In many ways, India’s perception in the minds of overseas folks is qualified positive and to make it an unambiguous

positive, we certainly need bridge building exercises. It’s not possible to vote for symbolism only, but I don’t reject symbolism altogether. On this score, my vote is positive. Are Google, Facebook and Qualcomm poor companies? I would love to read more about what our super CEOs will do for India and by when, but what I have read about

Why Gandhi is still relevant PORT-OF-SPAIN: The world needs a paradigm shift towards universal peace. The collapse of our civilisation demonstrates that we have lost the “reverence for life” and values. Ethical, moral and spiritual values have been replaced with violence, militarism, greed, anger, hate, terrorism and psychological and emotional warfare. There is a need for a new philosophy based on committed social action and a mass spiritual transformation accompanied by an intellectual process of a paradigm shift. We have to return to our moorings. We have heard of economic, social and cultural paradigms. But not a paradigm of peace. This is the way humanity has to traverse if we want to save mankind from further annihilation and warfare. One such human being whose work and philosophy and who

remains one of the most dominant historical figure in the 21st century: Mahatma Gandhi. On October 2, was marked Gandhi’s 146th birth anniversary. Gandhi’s name would linger in the minds of humanity for several more centuries because of his deep commitment and firm conviction towards a world free of nuclear warfare, peaceful co-existence, law, order, human happiness and stability. We can steer away from our civilisational crisis. We have to do that right away. The world needs peace more than ever now. Look around in the Middle East, the United States, Asia, Europe, India, Pakistan and our own Trinidad and Tobago, where murders and kidnappings are the order of the day. Our escape route is to follow the

Gandhian approach as it has the capacity of integrating the organizational and ethical aspects of our social system. Trinidad and Tobago’s first prime minister, the late Eric williams, in a speech marking Gandhi’s 90th birth anniversary on October 2, 1959, noted that “it will take many years before the world gets a truly adequate and comprehensive conception of the stature as a human being as Mahat-

ma Gandhi...understanding the range and scope of one of the most gifted human beings who has ever lived”. Gandhi was a master of spiritual techniques. He developed political and social theories during his 21 years of active political and social activities in South Africa. This practice and experience set him to the proper stead in his 34-year struggle against the British for Indian Independence. He called this initiative “Satyagra-

the outcomes depresses me a bit. They all seem nice and you could argue something is better than zero; but I feel Prime Minister Modi might have been better off talking to Sunil Mittal, Rahul Bajaj and 498 other Indian businessmen who could adopt one railway station near their home and make it WiFi enabled. Or one of our many unicorns and unicorns-to-be to create a fund bigger than the $150 million Indiadedicated fund Qualcomm announced it would set up. Are these outcomes enough? How badly do we even need these? My vote: negative. Let’s now turn to the real question: Is Silicon Valley the right model for Indian start-ups? While Silicon Valley’s demonstrated ability to create global tech companies is laudable, the context of India, our social structure, regulatory understanding and our problems must be understood differently. This mind-set to find one city as a role model rather than create a culture of innovation and risk friendliness is what is already making many people give Bengaluru the sobriquet of India’s Silicon Valley, is lazy, cheap and short sighted. Does our government really understand innovation, risk friendliness and start-ups? Do we really want to have a supporting infrastructure? Are our engineering colleges coded to create innovators? Do we, as a society, really value intellectual property? I would love to know if our prime minister learnt something in the super-CEO meetings that would help us find lasting solutions to these issues — in our own way. (Ravi Kiran co-founder of VentureNursery)

ha”. This he defined as Truth Force and Love Force. “The soul of the Satyagraha strategy was active resistance — resistance which found an outlet, not in violence, but in the Active Force of Love, Faith and Sacrifice,” he wrote. Great leaders of men fall into two categories. Firstly, they belong to those who affect the life and thought of their contemporaries in varying degrees, but whose influence steadily fades away after their death. Secondly, these men are a few who continue to influence humanity through their life and message long after death. The latter phenomenon bespeaks a type of greatness capable of defying time itself which dissolves everything else in its relentless flow. Such greatness discloses something permanent and abiding in the midst of much that is temporary and fleeting in the ideas and values radiated by the leader by his life and message. We must remember that today is observed as International Day of Peace by the United Nations. Gandhi belongs to the second category. (Paras Ramoutar is a senior journalist of Indian origin based in Port-ofSpain. The views are personal.)

US air strike hits Afghan hospital At least 22 people, including three children, killed and several critically injured. Treating 105 patients at the time of the attack, the hospital was hit several times during sustained bombing

It was a mistake, says US military WASHINGTON: Commander of US forces in Afghanistan John Campbell acknowledged on October 6 a US airstrike “mistakenly” John Campbell struck a hospital in Kunduz, Afghanistan that killed 22 civilians. “A hospital was mistakenly struck. We would never intentionally target a protected medical facility,” said Campbell at a congressional hearing here amid protests from Doctors Without Borders, an aid agency which runs the hospital hit by the US airstrike. According to Xinhua, Campbell fell short of acknowledging the US responsibility on Monday during a Pentagon briefing by merely indicating that “several civilians were accidentally struck”.

The attack raised “grave concerns about whether US forces took sufficient precautions to identify and avoid striking the facility”, the rights group said. The hospital was hit several times early on October 3 during sustained bombing that was apparently aimed at insurgent forces in the vicinity. At least 22 medical staff were killed and 37 critically injured. The hospital was treating 105 patients at the time of the attack. “The bombing of the hospital is a shocking development for Kunduz, where civilians and aid workers are already at grave risk from the

However, given the hospital’s protected status and the large numbers of civilians and medical personnel in the facility, attacking the hospital would still likely have been an unlawfully disproportionate attack, causing greater harm to civilians and civilian structures than any immediate military gain,” Human Rights Watch said.

iolations of Turkish airspace by Russian fighter planes deployed in Syria have raised alarm bells in Turkey, prompting NATO to issue a warning against Russia. On October 6, the Turkish military issued a statement saying that a squadron of F-16 jets on patrol duty on October 5 were radarlocked by a Russia-made MIG-29 over the Turkish-Syrian border, Xinhua reported. The incident followed Russia’s violations for twice of Turkish airspace over the weekend. A Su-30 bomber crossed the Syrian-Turkish border for a few seconds on October 3. Russia said the

the weekend,” said Stoltenberg. NATO defense ministers are meeting in Brussels on October 15 to talk about NATO measures to respond to Russian actions in a member country. “Both Russia and Turkey should be cautious in their moves and work to defuse the tension,” Serkan Demirtas, a Turkish analyst, said. Stressing that Syria has turned into a dangerous battlefield between the US-led coalition and the Russian camp, he said: “Any unwanted, unintentional development could lead to serious consequences that will surely have enormous effects on Turkey as well.” Turkey shares an approximately 900-km-long border with Syria.

Liu said that this attack “cannot be brushed aside as a mere mistake or an inevitable consequence of war.”

he International Organization for Migration (IOM) on Tuesday said that Mediterranean remains to be the most deadliest route for migrants as 2,987 of them have lost their lives so far this year out of a worldwide total of 4,093. “The Mediterranean remains the deadliest route for migrants on our planet,” IOM Director General William Lacy Swing said, adding that “this loss of life is unnecessary, completely avoidable and absolutely unacceptable,” Xinhua reported. The arrival of 557,899 migrants by sea has been reported in Europe

so far this year, representing close to double of last year’s total, while this year’s Mediterranean death count is fast approaching 2014’s yearly total of 3,139 fatalities. Greece by far remains the destination which receives the biggest migrant influx with 421,341

arrivals recorded to date, followed by Italy (133,451) and Spain (3,007). Since October 2, IOM indicated that over 20,000 new arrivals have been reported in Greece as migrants continue to cross the narrow stretch of water separating Turkey and Greece.

PBD format set for ‘paradigm shift’

Only 150 specially invited delegates to participate in a scaled-down event in January 2016 IANS, NEW DELHI

I

n a major departure from the past, the government on October 6 announced a “paradigm shift” in the format of the annual Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD), its engagement with the diaspora, with the mega jamboree to be held every alternate year and an event “focused on outcomes” to be held every other year. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, who is also minister of overseas Indian affairs, announced the changed format of India’s engagement with its diaspora at a press conference here. Sushma Swaraj said that in January 2016, a much scaled-down event will be held with the participation of just 150 specially invited foreign delegates. The invited diaspora guests will be experts who would attend various sessions to brainstorm on issues,

including the problem of the Indian diaspora in the Gulf, on the government’s flagship programs like Make in India, Skill India, Digital India, and problems that Persons of Indian

ship with that state government. She said Karnataka, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh have evinced interest in hosting the diaspora event. She announced that the Regional PBD, which is held abroad, will be held this year in Los Angeles, US, from November 14 to 15. She said US Secretary of State John Kerry would attend the event. In addition, “mini regional PBDs” would be held in two places where the Indian origin populace is less concentrated in order to increase their sense of involvement with their country of origin. The forthcoming PBD in Delhi would be more “academic”, she said. Sushma Swaraj also announced a quiz competition “Bharat ko Janiye” in order to involve the diaspora youth in learning about India. The 20 winners — 10 from PIO countries and 10 from countries with NRIs — would be awarded at the PBD.

mong Asian countries, India continues to be the top country of birth for scientists and engineers who have made the US their destination for key research and development, latest data has revealed. With 950,000 out of Asia’s total 2.96 million, India’s 2013 figure represented an 85 percent increase from 2003, according to a new report from the National Science Foundation’s National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES). From 2003 to 2013, the number

of scientists and engineers residing in the US rose from 21.6 million to 29 million. “An important factor in that increase over the same time period, the number of immigrant scientists and engineers went from 3.4 million to 5.2 million,” the report noted. Of

the immigrant scientists and engineers in the US in 2013, 57 percent were born in Asia while 20 percent were born in North America (excluding the US), Central America, the Caribbean or South America. “While 16 percent were born in Europe, six percent were born in

Africa and less than one percent were born in Oceania. “Immigrants went from making up 16 percent of the science and engineering workforce to 18 percent,” the NCSES said. In 2013, the latest year for which numbers are available, 63 percent of US immigrant scientists and engineers were naturalised citizens, while 22 percent were permanent residents and 15 percent were temporary visa holders. The NCSES report found that immigrant scientists and engineers were more likely to earn post-baccalaureate degrees than their USborn counterparts.

Manohar elected BCCI president, plans clean-up, transparency Shashank Manohar, elected for the second time to the top post, vows to wipe out corruption from the game; will hold the portfolio for full two years IANS, MUMBAI

S

hashank Manohar took over as the new president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India at a Special General Meeting (SGM) of the board here, and immediately spoke of clean-up, transparency, and restoring the board’s lost reputation. The BCCI chief’s post was lying vacant since incumbent Jagmohan Dalmiya died in Kolkata on September 20, and the SGM was called to choose the new president. As per the BCCI constitution, an SGM to nominate a successor has to be convened within 15 days of the incumbent chief’s death. Manohar, a lawyer by profession, earlier held the top post from 2008 to 2011. The 58-year-old was elected for a full two-year term as all the six East Zone cricket units unanimously proposed his candidature for the board president’s post. It was East Zone’s turn this time

around to pick the president, and all six associations of the zone proposed Manohar’s name. Manohar was elected for the second time. The others backing Manohar for the post were Sourav Ganguly from

Bengal, Sourav Dasgupta from Tripura, Gautam Roy from Assam, Ashirbad Behera of Odisha, and Sanjay Singh of the Jharkhand State Cricket Association. “We have to work on a couple of

issues regarding the board and bring back the reputation back as early as possible. I need two months’ time, in which I will look into all the aspects,” Manohar told reporters at a press conference. “I will continue to work on the issues Dalmiya had started working on. I will look to do my duty as best as possible,” he added. “The first thing would be as functions of the interest issue of the BCCI. The board will frame regulations with regard to function of interest of administrators and their staffs that would be done within a month’s time.” “The board would also appoint an imbursement, for an ethics officer, who would be independent of their post and who would look into the complaints as regard to the conflicts of the administrator, players and their staffs,” he added. He stressed that his second aim would be to wipe away and prevent corruption from the game.

he top seeded pair of Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis defeated the Romanian duo of Irina-Camelia Begu and Monica Niculescu in straight sets to win the doubles title at the Wuhan Open tennis tournament here. The Indo-Swiss combination — which did not drop a single set through the tournament — hardly broke sweat as they vanquished their opponents 6-2, 6-3 in one

hour and nine minutes. This was also the Sania and Martina’s second win over the Romanian pair. They had earlier defeated them 6-4, 6-1 in the second round of the Italian Open in Rome last May. Sania hit winners from the baseline at regular intervals while Hingis kept up the pressure on the Romanians with her quick reflexes and volleys. India beat NZ 3-1 to square Hockey series NELSON (NEW ZEALAND): After losing their opener, the Indian hockey team came back strongly to beat New Zealand 3-1 in the second game to level the four-match bilateral Test series 1-1 here. Unlike the previous match where the visitors lost 0-2, India lifted their tempo and displayed attacking hockey which helped them score three goals, one each by Ramandeep Singh, Lalit Upadhyay and Nikkin Thimmaiah. India went in to attack right from the start which helped them build the initial pressure over the hosts. The opening minutes saw Chinglensana Singh attack from the right flank, but the alert New Zealand defence thwarted the attempt. Keeping constant pressure, World No.8 India earned a penalty corner in the 10th minute but the ball was hit wide of the post. But only three minutes later, Birendra Lakra gave a crucial cross to Ramandeep who opened the account for India on a rebound, giving his team the lead. The Kiwis in turn capitalised on a counter attack, but could not break the Indian defence. India went into halftime with a 1-0 lead. At the restart, New Zealand kept on pressing hard for their equaliser throughout the third quarter and they were successful when Kane Russell, in the 45th minute, converter a penalty corner chance for the much needed equaliser to go into the last 15 minutes 1-1. India were rewarded for being consistent with their attacks when Manpreet Singh’s accurate pass to Upadhyay helped India take the 2-1 advantage in the 52nd minute. Then in the last minute of the match Thimmaiah put it completely beyond New Zealand’s reach when he scored his side’s third goal to level the series for the India.

unbeaten knock of 30, while offspinner Ravichandran Ashwin for India returned figures of 3/24. After an expensive first over which yielded nine runs, the Indians struck in the second as Ashwin sent back Hashim Amla (2) who flicked one to Rohit Sharma at legslip. Skipper Faf du Plesis and A.B. de Villiers then came together for a partnership of 25 runs and helped in steadying the innings. But then du Plesis (16) tried to hit Ashwin over the top but managed to only chip it to mid-on where Mohit Sharma took a brilliant catch running back. At 49/2, Ashwin once again came

to the party as he clean bowled de Villiers. At the halfway stage, the Proteas were 57/3. The match was interrupted for some time after the 11th over as the vociferous crowd at the Barabati started throwing bottles as missiles on the ground. When play resumed, the visitors needed just 29 runs with 66 deliveries in hand but after two overs at 70/3. Left arm spinner Axar Patel fired in a straighter one to trap Farhaan Behardien (11) in front of the stumps. David Miller (not out 10) came out next to finish the job as South Africa won with six wickets in hand.

Litmus test for Left in Kerala

After winning the 2006 assembly polls, the LDF has ended up on the losing side in every electoral battle in the state SANU GEORGE, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

T

he upcoming three-tier local body elections in Kerala will be a litmus test for the Left which has been on a steady decline since winning the assembly elections in 2006. It is now going to be a decade since the Left Democratic Front (LDF) led by the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) won the local body polls in Kerala, a state it considers its bastion. The polls will take place on November 2 and 5. The results will be out on November 7. After winning the 2006 assembly polls, the LDF has ended up on the losing side in every electoral battle in the state. It was washed out in the 2009 Lok Sabha battle, quickly followed by three losses in assembly by-

elections. The shocker came in 2010 when for the first time in years, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) trounced the LDF and secured close to 65 percent of the local bodies. The Left also lost the 2011 assembly polls to the UDF but narrowly.

Kerala minister gets massive support on curbing shutdowns THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In less than 24 hours, Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala’s Facebook post regarding a proposed law to curb shutdowns has crossed 800,000 likes. “I have received massive response to my FB post seeking opinion on introducing a bill to curb ‘hartals’

(shutdowns). By now, 800,000 people have liked my post and this shows people are fed up with frequent shutdowns that Kerala experiences,” Chennithala said on while speaking at a public meeting in Malappuram. In his Facebook post on September 30 night, the minister said the Kerala government was mulling introducing a bill to curb ‘hartals’. The post said frequent shutdown calls have become a menace for the people and society at large. Even the Kerala High Court said it was high time to rein in ‘hartals’ and, hence, he decided to seek the opinion from all on the matter, Chennithala wrote on his Facebook page.

The UDF won two by-elections in 2012. And in the 2014 Lok Sabha election, Kerala elected the second largest contingent of Congress MPs in the country after Karnataka. Again, this year, despite various scams, the UDF won the Aruvikara assembly by-election. And with

most people feeling that the Left may be in for a shock in next year’s assembly elections, the local body polls are considered very important. Another reason that has caused a hiccup in the Left camp is the meeting in New Delhi last week between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and V. Natesan, the Hindu Ezhava leader and general secretary of the powerful Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Sangom that owes allegiance to social reformer Sree Narayana Guru. For years, a major portion of the Ezhava community has always stood by the CPI-M. “Electoral politics means numbers. With the SNDP moving closer to the BJP, the Hindu vote is going to be split and the Left is going to be hit badly. The BJP will gain. This will benefit the UDF,” said a political analyst.

Subhash Ghai to set up film institute in Hyd? HYDERABAD: Well-known filmmaker Subhash Ghai has revived his proposal to set up world-class film institute in Hyderabad. The producer-director, who had suffered Subhash Ghai setback in 2010 with the court quashing land allotment for his acting school Whistling Woods International Limited (WWIL), called on Telangana Information Technology Minister K. Tarakarama Rao and discussed his proposal. The minister invited Ghai to set up WWIL in the Film City proposed to be developed at Rachakonda near Hyderabad. According to an official statement, the filmmaker responded positively to this proposal. Noting that Hyderabad has the required infrastructure for the film industry, Ghai said his Mukta Arts could offer its services. The Andhra Pradesh High Court in 2010 had quashed the allotment of 20.10 acres made to WWIL by Andhra government in 2009.

Writers return awards over Kalburgi probe delay IANS, BENGALURU

S

ix Kannada writers on October 3 returned state literary awards in protest over delay in the inquiry into rationalist M.M. Kalburgi’s killing on August 30, the state literary council said in a statement here. “The writers have returned the Aralu Sahitya (literary) award given by the state-run BMTC, as they are saddened by long delay in the arrest of the two assailants who are at large and the probe did not make much headway,” Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Pundalik Halambi said in the statement. The young writers — Veeranna Madiwalar, T. Satish Javare Gowda, Sangamesh Menasinakai, Hanu-

manth Haligeri, Shridevi V Aloor and Chidanand Sali — were conferred the awards on November 20, 2011 at a function here where Kalburgi was also honored with the Nrupatunga Prashasti. “The authors have returned the awards to put pressure on the state government to hasten the probe and nab the culprits, as it is over a

month since the shocking incident took place on a broad daylight,” Halambi said. The 77-year-old Kalburgi, a former Hampi University vice-chancellor, was shot dead by two unidentified assailants at his residence in Dharwad in northern Karnataka. Though the state government last month announced Rs.500,000 reward for clues leading to the arrest of the killers, the state CID is yet to make a breakthrough. Insisting that the Parishat take back the awards, Javare Gowda said they had no option but to do so to force the government speed up the ongoing probe. “It is a simple gesture to exert pressure on the state government to nab the culprits,” Gowda said.

Rameswaram is changing, offers more than temple tourism VENKATACHARI JAGANNATHAN, CHENNAI

R

ameswaram is perhaps the only place in the country where the rail route to the temple town offers a lifelong memorable experience. As the train slowly crosses the railway bridge connecting the Indian mainland and the Pamban island in Rameswaram, one is fascinated looking at the sea below. This turns into thrill as the train enters the 1941-built cantilever railway bridge that opens upwards in the middle for ships to pass under. A slight fear creeps in when one remembers the story of the washing away of the Boat Mail train with over 110 passengers by a huge tidal

wave in 1964. Traditionally a pilgrimage center, Rameswaram offers rail bridge tourism, disaster tourism (visit to ‘ghost town’ Dhanuskodi gobbled up by sea in 1964); a ride in backwater up to Dhanuskodi; water

sports tourism and Kalam tourism (visit to former Indian president A.P.J.Abdul Kalam’s home-cummuseum, and his burial site). “The attitude of pilgrims has changed over the years. They are on

the lookout for invigorating experiences,” Michael Dass Fernando, proprietor of Holy Island Water Sports Rental Services, told IANS. The company operates a water sports park offering rides like jet ski,

kayak, banana ride, stand-up board and swan boat services and landbased games like Columbus ride, water ball and others. “After praying at the Rameswaram temple, people want to explore. Rameswaram has changed over the years. Fifteen years ago, there were just four lodges. Now there are around 200. People are converting their homes into lodges,” Fernando said. Even for the not-so-religious, the holy dip in the sea and the bath at the 22 holy ‘theerthams’ (wells) in the Ramanathaswamy temple itself is an experience. The temple has the world’s longest corridor with 1,212 pillars. The island has many temples and other holy places.

ctor Vikramjeet Virk, who plays the antagonist in upcoming Telugu historical film Rudhramadevi, says it wasn’t easy to portray his character in the film. Unlike his previous roles in Telugu films such as Baadshah and Heart Attack, Vikramjeet’s role in

Rudhramadevi required lot of hardwork. The actor, born in Punjab, and known for his work in television serials such as Shobha Somnath Ki, Devon Ke Dev and Maharakashak Aryan, plays a character called Mahadeva Nayakudu in Rudhramadevi, which releases worldwide on October 9 in Tamil and Hindi. “The weapon I use in the film weighs around 12 kg and was 8 ft

Shamlee hasn’t signed ‘Kathalo Rajakumari’ CHENNAI: Actress Shamlee hasn’t given her consent to Telugu film Kathalo Rajakumari, contrary to some reports. The project will feature Nara Rohith in the lead. “Shamlee currently has two Tamil projects and she is also in talks for a Malayalam film. Besides these projects, she hasn’t signed any new project in Telugu,” a source close to Shamlee told IANS. Reportedly, Shamlee was approached by the makers of Kathalo Rajakumari, but she turned down the offer. Shamlee, most popular as the child actor from Mani Ratnam’s National award-winning Tamil film Anjali, is currently shooting for Tamil film Veera Sivaji. She also has a yetuntitled Tamil film with Dhanush in the offing.

CHENNAI: Southern film actress Anushka Shetty was so moved by the emotional story of warrior queen Rudhramadevi that she agreed to be part of the eponymous Telugu project that’s based on the life of the latter. Rudhramadevi, which is directed by Gunasekar, releases in cinemas on October 9. “What really drew me to the project was the emotional turmoil Rudhramadevi went through as a

woman. It was so intense. She still ruled with compassion, cared for her people and kingdom more than her Anushka Shetty own life,” Anushka told IANS. Set against the backdrop of Kakatiya dynasty, the film narrates the rise of the ferocious warrior queen Rudhramadevi.

tall. You can imagine how strong one needs to be to even lift and move it freely. I had to be extremely fit, so I gained about 10 kg and added lot of muscle,” he said. He also trained for weeks in preparation of his role. “From horse riding to sword fighting, we were trained by professionals,” he said, and added that the experience of shooting in 3D wasn’t easy.

“We shot a lot using chroma screen. The thing is, when you use chroma even within a set, you to have to imagine what you will finally see on the screen and act. With chroma all around us, we had to put in extra effort to perform. It was extremely challenging,” he said. Rudhramadevi too, like recent Telugu blockbuster Baahubali, has its share of awe-inspiring stunts.

CHENNAI: If you liked the cycle superstar Mahesh Babu used in his latest Telugu blockbuster Srimanthudu, then here’s your chance to take it home. In the film, Mahesh used a Cannondale Scalpel Carbon 3 cycle, worth almost Rs.350,000. Those interested can bid for the cycle at www.iamsrimanthudu.com by donating Rs.999, the film’s makers said in a statement. While only one lucky winner will get the cycle, the rest of the donators will receive Srimanthudu tshirt. The winner will receive the cycle from Mahesh on the sets of his next Telugu film Brahmotsavam.

FILM REVIEW | TAMIL

‘Puli’: New cut-off for mediocre filmmaking Film: Puli; Director: Chimbu Deven; Cast: Vijay, Shruti Haasan, Hansika Motwani, Sridevi, Kichcha Sudeep, Thambi Ramaiah, Robo Shankar, Ali and Prabhu; Rating: *1/2

T

he bigger the film doesn’t always mean the greater it is, and there can’t be a better example of this than Vijay’s big-budget fantasy drama “Puli”, which isn’t a bad film, but worse. The film, unlike Vijay’s most outings, comes from someone who loves to experiment and even though not all his attempts have succeeded so far, he’s always given us the feeling that he isn’t a lousy film-

maker. With Puli, however, all that seems to have changed and that’s not a good sign. It’s tough to understand whether Puli is a fantasy film or one that’s intended for children, because with

so much of violence, it sure doesn’t qualify to be called a children’s film. But with fantasy elements like talking birds, talking troll, talking tortoise, magic potion and Lilliputians, you’re almost convinced that it’s a fun fantasy entertainer. Sadly, it quite isn’t the entertainer you anticipate it to be as most of the time is spent on glorifying its star hero and his image. So, automatically everything you expect him to do in commercial films is checked — from breaking into duets in exotic locations to romancing two heroines and deliver pages of dialogues. Puli uses the fantasy angle to merely tell us a regular revenge tale that gets so predictable at a point that it becomes the new cut-off for mediocre filmmaking. —Haricharan Pudipeddi

T

he timeless poster boy of Bollywood, Shashi Kapoor, despite his frail health attended the closing ceremony of the sixth Jagran Film Festival here to receive a Lifetime Achievement honor. Industry members lauded his contribution to Indian cinema, and said it is welldeserved. The legendary actor, who was earlier this year decorated with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, was bestowed with the Lifetime Achievement honor by celebrated director Shyam Benegal here on October 4. Shashi Kapoor, 77, is best known for his nuanced performance in memorable films like Satyam Shivam Sundaram, Trishul, Kabhi Kabhi, Vijeta and Kalyug, and despite his ill health he was present at the ceremo-

standing ovation for ‘Aligarh’ at Busan BUSAN: Hansal Mehta’s Aligarh garnered applause and received a standing ovation following its screening at the 20th Busan International Film Festival on October 4. Proud director Hansal Mehta found the response overwhelming. He felt the story about homosex-

ny to receive the award. He has been wheelchair bound for some years now. Director Sudhir Mishra feels that no honor can match up to Shashi Kapoor’s achievements, and it is because of his relentless work in offbeat cinema that the current

Indian filmmakers “still hold the wish to make something different”. “He is the most deserving for this award. Any award or recognition is less than his achievements,” said Mishra, who is known for Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi and Inkaar.

‘Talvar’ gets warm opening IANS, MUMBAI

D

irector Meghna Gulzar’s reality drama Talvar, starring Irrfan Khan and Konkana Sen Sharma, has made its presence felt at the box office, despite having released with big budget Singh is Bliing. The film has collected Rs.92.5 million in its opening weekend. Made on a budget of Rs.160 million, the film, based on the 2008 murder of 14-year-old Aarushi Tal-

war and her family’s domestic servant Hemraj, collected Rs.30 million on its opening day on Oct 2. It witnessed a steady growth towards the weekend, and ended up collecting Rs.27.5 million and Rs.35 million on Saturday and Sunday.

Alia Bhatt to light up ‘Jhalak’ finale MUMBAI: Actress Alia Bhatt will be seen shaking a leg with her Shaandaar co-star Shahid Kapoor on the grand finale of dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Reloaded. “Not only will Alia be present for the finale, she will also be seen cheering for the ‘Jhalak’ contestants as the final moments to win the trophy begin. She will be seen performing alongside Shahid as well on a song from their new movie ‘Shaandaar’,” said a source from the show. Shahid appears as a judge on the Colors show along with Malaika Arora Khan, Lauren Gottlieb and Ganesh Hegde. The finale episode of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Reloaded will be aired on October 10.

Amitabh Bachchan to sing, compose for new TV show IANS, MUMBAI

M

egastar Amitabh Bachchan is composing and singing for a new TV show, Aaj Ki Raat Hai Zindagi”. The 72-year-old, who has sung before, is focussing all his energy on this latest collaboration with Star Plus. While excitement is palpable, he’s nervous. “The concentration really is for the work on hand at composing and singing and rehearsing for the show on TV... “It’s always so shattering to be doing something for the first time and hoping and praying all goes well,” Big B said on his blog. The actor, who is adept at using technology, feels the need of an app to read the mind. “If enthusiasm could only find fructification the moment it is thought, it would bring in so much

immediacy to feelings and creations... The mind must have the benefit of an app, to transfer all that comes in thought to its immediate and final end.” The concept of Aaj Ki Raat Hai Zindagi is not known but its trailer gives a glimpse of a fun-filled avatar of Big B, who makes a simple ride in an elevator interesting with an impromptu jig and crazy antics.

‘Singh is Bliing’ - No expectation, no disappointment uality moved the audience. “Thank you #Busan for the overwhelming response to #Aligarh. Film got an ovation at the end. People were moved by the tale. Thank you,” Mehta tweeted. “And yes, the big auditorium was PACKED. Really thank you #Busan for the love you showed to #Aligarh,” he shared. Set in a town in Uttar Pradesh from which the film takes its name, Aligarh is the story of a professor (Manoj Bajpayee) fired for his sexuality and a young journalist (Rajkummar Rao) who tells his story to the world. The ongoing 10-day film festival in South Korea will culminate on October 10.

Film: Singh is Bliing; Director: Prabhudheva, Cast: Akshay Kumar, Kay Kay Menon, Amy Jackson, Lara Dutta, Rati Agnihotri, Pradeep Rawat, Murali Sharma and Kunal Kapoor; Rating: **

T

he film is flashy, colorful and ostentatious from word go. But that’s all there is to it. There is not much of a story. Raftaar Singh (Akshay Kumar) is a good-for-nothing ‘Singh’ living in Bassi Pathanan in Punjab, who, according to his father, leaves every task unfinished, does nothing for a living and eats all day. Thoroughly pampered by his mother (Rati Agni-

hotri), he simply enjoys life. As a punishment one day, Raftaar’s father packs him off to Goa to work for a friend of his, Kirpal Singh. Along with his two loyal friends, Pappi and Pompi, Raftaar lands up

in Goa. Because, “He may be silly, but is very dependable”, his boss Kirpal Singh assigns Raftaar to take care of Sara (Amy Jackson), a special guest from Romania. She is in Goa to escape Mark (Kay Kay Menon), a

ruthless, ambitious, eccentric drug mafia don in Romania, who is keen to marry her. Raftaar is in a fix as he cannot speak English and Sara knows no Hindi. There steps in a translator Emily (Lara Dutta). Amidst plenty of action, some out of context songs, oodles of silly humor, beautiful locales, the film progresses, entertaining the audience all the way. Akshay Kumar is his usual Punjabi, energetic self, playing the quintessential sardaar, with action, romance and comedy woven into his character in abundance. Amy Jackson as Sara manages to look pretty. It is Kay Kay Menon as Mark, who lights up the screen in a brilliant cameo after ages. — Troy Ribeiro

Skokie Gandhi Memorial Trust completes 10 years

Anjali World receives Paul Walker award

BY A STAFF WRITER ONTEREY, CA -- Singersongwriter Anjali World, a marine conservation activist who channels income from her successful performing career toward ocean wildlife protection, received the 2015 Paul Walker Ocean Leadership Award from the Monterey Bay Aquarium on October 3. The award was presented in public ceremonies at the aquarium by aquarium Executive Director Julie Packard and by Brandon Birtell with the Paul Walker Foundation. “I can’t begin to express how humbled and honored I am to receive this award from the Walker family,” said Anjali World during the ceremonies. “ Pa u l’s d e d i c a t i o n t o m a r i n e conservation inspired me tremendously. I will forever fight to carry on Paul’s legacy in protecting marine life.” Anjali Ranadivé, who performs under the stage name Anjali World, grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and developed an early passion for wildlife – as a middleschool volunteer at the aquarium, and with other nonprofits including The Ocean Project. She began her performing career after earning a marine science degree from UCBerkeley. At the same time, she founded Jaws & Paws, a marine and wildlife conservation nonprofit that campaigns for protection of sharks, sea turtles, polar bears and tigers. She gives all the proceeds from her music to Jaws & Paws. At the October 3 celebration, the aquarium also presented its Paul Walker

M BY A STAFF WRITER KO K I E , I L – T h e Ga n d h i Memorial Trust of Skokie celebrated its 10th anniversary as well as ‘Gandhi Jayanti’ at Skokie Park District IL on October 4. Present on the occasion were over 300 people, including Mayor of Skokie George Van Dusen and Indian Americans from Skokie village and surrounding areas as also members of the Bharatiya Senior Citizens of Chicago from Carol Stream, United Parivar from Niles. The program was conducted by Ravi Baichawal who welcomed the guests and thanked all participant organizations and groups. The opening ceremony was marked by Gandhiji’s favourite devotional song, ‘Vaishnav Jan To Tene Re Kahiye’ sung by Bhattacharya. The chairman of the trust, Om Prakash Kamaria, and Mayor George Van Dusen spoke on the occasion. Consulate General Of India Dr. Ausaf

S

Sayeed also elaborated on the Mahatma’s philosophy, which, he said, had influenced the whole world and inspired millions. He said that Bapu’s ideas of non-violence, compassion, supreme humanism, and his unparalleled role in India’s freedom movement had made him not only the most important person of the century but also that of the millennium. Dr Sayeed said Gandhiji lived in the hope of a better world, and urged people to take a pledge to fulfil his dreams. Niles West High School students performed a ‘Give peace a chance’ poem. Saraswathi Ranganathan played Veena accompanied by Dhanajay Kunte. Awards were presented to Shelly Reese Nezinsky and Michael Wronkowski by the trust members and Mayor Van Dusen and Consulate General of India Dr. Sayeed. The program concluded with yet another Gandhiji ‘bhajan’ before the participants were given a gift bag from the program organizers.

Consulate marks Gandhi Jayanti BY DR. NILESH MEHTA HICAGO, IL -- The Consulate General of India in Chicago celebrated the 146th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, at its premises on October 2. Consul General Dr. Ausaf Sayeed said that Mahatma Gandhi was trans-national in the range of his influences and in the reach of his thoughts and that there was hardly any country in the world where his ideals were not inspiring people. “This is evidenced by the installation of his statues in the US, Germany, Australia, and in many other countries”, he added. Sayeed stated that for his ideas of compassion, non-violence, supreme humanism, satyagraha (holding on to truth), swadeshi (preference to domestic products), universal brotherhood, uUplift of all, and, above all, his unparalleled role in India’s freedom movement, he was often named not only among the most important persons of the century but also that of the Millennium. He added that Prime Minister Narender Modi’s deep commitment to Gandhian ideals, reflected in an array of his initiatives, including “Clean India”, “Make in India”, etc., would further accelerate India’s growth trajectory and empower it to emerge as one of the front-ranking countries of the world. Indian is appointed CIO of USA Funds BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC -IT veteran Shital Patel has been appointed the senior vice president and chief information officer of a US-based nonprofit corporation, USA Funds, that provides aid to needy college students. Patel will be responsible for all aspects of USA Funds’s information technology and services and will lead the exploration of emerging information service opportunities, issues and solutions, the corporation said in a statement. The Indianapolis-based nonprofit corporation promotes student success in college and careers nationally. “ Sh i t a l b r i n g s t o U S A Fu n d s extensive leadership experience in both the private sector and government, as well as significant expertise in aligning

information technology capabilities with emerging business strategies,” USA Funds CEO Bill Hansen said, in a statement. “She will provide key leadership as USA Funds continues its transition toward

becoming a national leader in promoting better outcomes for students in postsecondary education and in the workforce,” Hansen added. Patel most recently managed enterprise sales for Microsoft in Indiana. Her previous experience includes service as chief information officer for the City of Indianapolis and as a managing director for Unisys Corp. Patel is a graduate of the Indiana University Kelley School of Business. She serves on the board of directors of the Indiana Youth Institute. USA Funds was founded in 1960 by a group of business leaders who were concerned about the rising cost of a college education. Throughout its more than 50year history, USA Funds has served more than 22 million students and parents with more than USD 250 billion in financial aid for higher education.

Northern Illinois varsity student has mumps BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Health officials have reported that a Northern Illinois University student has a confirmed case of mumps. School officials notified students of the mumps case in an alert last week saying the DeKalb County Health Department, the Illinois Department of Public health and NIU Health Services were working to provide information on the disease to the community. In August, 50 people were diagnosed with mumps in Champaign County and most of the cases were linked to the University of Illinois campus. In the

same month, the Chicago Department of Public Health confirmed a Chicago high school student had a case of the mumps, marking the seventh case of mumps in the city since January.

Mumps is a highly contagious viral illness characterized by swollen jaws and puffy cheeks. Although not everyone who gets mumps shows symptoms, they include fever, headache, muscle aches and loss of appetite. The virus is spread through the saliva or mucus of an infected person, but can spread faster on a college campus because students are in close contact with each other, Dr. Robert Palinkas, director of the McKinley Health Center, said. Health officials said a measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine is recommended for all children in two doses, but adults should receive at least one dose of the vaccine if they “have no evidence of immunity.”

Indians sue SF 49ers for attack at stadium

BY A STAFF WRITER AN FRANCISO, CA -- Kiran Patel, 32, and his cousin, Amish Patel, have sought unspecified damages against professional American football team San Francisco 49ers and the companies that run California’s Levi’s stadium, saying the security was inadequate to protect them from drunk and violent fans. Patel, who was attacked by two brothers just before the kickoff of the October 5, 2014 game against the Kansas City Chiefs at the stadium, had nudged Amador Rebollero, 28, to let him know a stall in the bathroom had opened up. In response to the nudging, Rebollero and his brother Dario Rebollero, 35, began to assault both the Patels, according to Santa Clara police. The Rebolleros were both intoxicated at the time of the assault, which was caught on video by a bystander and posted on YouTube, according to an sfgate.com report. The video was later removed. Kiran Patel, who was knocked out cold following a fall to the ground after being sucker-punched, suffered a serious brain injury from the beating. He is still recovering from the incident, for which he was hospitalized for several weeks, and underwent surgery on his skull to reduce swelling.
