WASHINGTON: The US House of Representative passed a bill on October 9 to appeal the 40-year-old oil export ban, but its future was uncertain facing a veto threatened by the White House. The House approved the bill by 261 to 159 lifting the crude oil export ban first put into place in December 1975 to counter the 1970s Arab oil embargo against Western countries which has once caused US domestic gasoline prices to skyrocket. But with only 26 Democrats voting in favor, the bill failed to gain the 290 votes necessary to overturn a presidential veto. Representatives who support lifting the ban believed the current oil supply situation is quite different from the time the ban was first enacted as

s Democratic presidential candidates faced off for the first time, frontrunner Hillary Clinton, without offering any specifics, said she would be different than President Barack Obama, but closest rival Bernie Sanders promised a “political revolution.” In the first televised Democratic primary debate hosted by CNN in Las Vegas on October 13, asked how her presidency would not
be a “third term” for Obama, Clinton said: “I think being the first woman president would be quite a change.”
Self-proclaimed socialist senator Sanders, on the other hand, claimed he would bring about a “political revolution”, in which far more Americans would turn out to vote, and in which the balance of power was shifted sharply away from the rich. Clinton also sought to combat suggestions that she is too closely aligned with Wall Street banks by saying she had personally scolded Wall Street bankers to “cut it out”, months before the financial crisis of 2008.

WASHINGTON: The Obama administration has announced that it would halt its botched trainand-equip program to build a Syrian rebel force and focus on supporting forces already engaged in the fighting against the Islamic State (IS). According to Christine Warmouth, under secretary of defense for policy, the Obama administration would from now on provide equipment and weapons for existing Syrian rebel groups whose leaders have passed through “the same rigorous vetting process that we have used in the original program.” “In terms of the program we originally conceived, we’re going to pause that for now,” said Warmouth at a White House press call on the issue. “We’ve had some significant challenges, so we’re going to pause the training that we’ve been doing where we’ve recruited specific individual fighters.”
WASHINGTON: The US House of Representative passed a bill on October 9 to appeal the 40-year-old oil export ban, but its future was uncertain facing a veto threatened by the White House. The House approved the bill by 261 to 159 lifting the crude oil export ban first put into place in December 1975 to counter the 1970s Arab oil embargo against Western countries which has once caused US domestic gasoline prices to skyrocket. right now the US is the largest oil and gas producer in the world and the US crude oil output has reached a historical high level. “The US daily production of oil has increased dramatically in the past 14 years,” said Gregg Harper, a Representative from the state of Mississippi, before the vote. “The companies need new market. At this point the ban is not protecting the economy. Instead the economy is being restricted and Americans are being denied jobs,” Harper said. However, the White House threatened to veto the bill, saying it “is not needed at this time.” But the outlook for the Senate to approve the House version bill is not high at present because the supports are mainly from Senate Republicans.
US denounces attacks on Israeli civilians WASHINGTON: The US has condemned “in the strongest terms possible” terrorist attacks against Israeli civilians that have resulted in the killing of three people. “The situation is too volatile, too dangerous, and it is not going to lead to the outcome that people want, which is to have a peaceful resolution of the differences,” Xinhua quoted US Secretary of State John Kerry as saying.

focus on individuals and their decisions is important both from an academic and ethical standpoint, according to a report on the univer-

rate in India or the mortality rate in the United States, all of those things you’re looking at are aggregates.” “But it’s one death at a time. It’s one person at a time who’s in poverty,” Deaton said. “It’s their lives that are being led. In the end, I don’t think you’re ever going to want to get away from the individual.” Deaton’s latest book, The Great Escape: Health, Wealth and the Origins of Inequality (Princeton University Press), explores the story of how, beginning 250 years ago, some parts of the world sustained progress, opening up gaps and setting the state for today’s unequal world.

MUMBAI: The Shiv Sena on October 13 patted its activists who blackened senior journalist Sudheendra Kulkarni’s face for hosting a book launch of Pakistan’s former foreign minister Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri but a party leader said the Sena-BJP alliance was unlikely to snap. Sena president Uddhav Thackeray met the party activists who carried out the widely condemned ink attack on October 12 on Kulkarni, a longtime former aide to BJP leader L.K. Advani. The activists, whom some Sena leaders said were “heroes”, were called to the Thackeray clan’s residence in Bandra East where the party chief showered praises on them. On October 12 morning, the six activists accosted Kulkarni outside his Sion home, shouted slogans and smeared black ink on his face. They were protesting against Kulkarni’s decision to host Kasuri for hosting the release of Kasuri book, “Neither a Hawk Nor a Dove: An Insider Account of Pakistan’s Foreign Policy”. The activists are Gajanan Patil, Prakash Asbe, Ashok Waghmare, Samadhan Jugdar, Sarjerao Jadhav and Venkatesh Nair. They were arrested late on October 12 night and later released on bail.

round 57 percent of 13.5 million electorate voted on October 12 in 49 of the 243 constituencies in the first round of battle for political power in Bihar. The two main fronts soon claimed victory. It marked the start of an intense five-phase contest that will end on November 5 and whose outcome — to be known three days later — will prove whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi still retains his charisma or not. The BJP-led NDA is determined to oust the ruling Janata Dal-United (JD-U) and its allies, the RJD and Congress who had formed a Grand
Alliance. Additional Chief Electoral Officer R. Lakshaman said the election passed off peacefully, with 57 percent voting. It was nearly 51 percent in 2010. Defying Maoist calls to boycott the elections, millions of men and women in both urban and rural areas trooped to polling booths in the 49 constituencies spread over 10 districts, officials said.

fter the aborted NSA-level talks in New Delhi, there was a chance of the Indian and Pakistani National Security Advisors holding a meeting in New York last month, but India “got a sense” the other side wasn’t open to the idea, official sources said. The August 23 talks between India’s NSA Ajit Doval and Pakistan’s Sartaj Aziz was called off after India stressed that the talks agenda should stick to what had been agreed upon at Ufa - that the two NSAs would discuss terrorism, but Pakistan insisted on dragging in the Kashmir issue and include the Kashmiri separatists in the agenda.
India feels that despite the holding of talks between their border forces — the Border Security Force and the Pakistan Rangers — both sides have been “unable to progress on the other elements” of the agreement at Ufa, which included NSA talks on terrorism, a meeting between their Directors General of Military Operations among others.

Modi’s vision and Hindu
nationalism The attack on a Muslim family by a mob on suspicion that they were eating beef should alert prime minister about the growing intolerance in the saffron camp AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
N
arendra Modi is probably learning the veracity of Stalin’s insightful aphorism that while one death is a tragedy, a million is a statistic. In a country which has seen innumerable communal riots over the decades, and a 25 percent rise in inter-faith violence since Modi came to power, the furore over the death of one Muslim in a village near Delhi must be something of a puzzle and also hugely disconcerting for the government because it cannot quite anticipate what the fallout will be over a period of time. Its concerns must be all the greater because the incident persuaded President Pranab Mukherjee to deviate from a written script at a Rashtrapati Bhavan function and call for preserving the nation’s “core” values. The president’s appeal made the prime minister break what the New York Times once called his “dangerous silence” on the attacks on minorities and urge Hindus and Muslims to fight poverty and not
one another. Evidently, the murderous attack on a Muslim family by a saffron mob on the suspicion that they were eating beef has alerted the prime minister about the growing level of intolerance in the saffron camp. For Modi, the tragedy could not have occurred at a worse time,
For Modi, the tragedy could not have occurred at a worse time, as it has taken much of the sheen off his recent foreign trip for it has taken much of the sheen off his recent foreign trip. Even German chancellor Angela Merkel’s visit to India was overshadowed by the murder. What the centre and the BJP may feel uneasy about is that even as they issue the routine condemnations, they will be largely unable to brush aside the primary motive for t h e
murder since cow slaughter has always had great emotional appeal for the saffron brotherhood. As a result, the Hindu chauvinists will be forever on the lookout for any provocation in their eyes as can be seen from the manhandling of an MLA by the BJP legislators inside the Jammu and Kashmir assembly for holding a beef party and the burning of a truck carrying cows and the assault on a Muslim youth who was in the truck in Uttar Pradesh. These acts of violence show that for all of Modi’s efforts, the communal situation will continue to simmer. Moreover, the government’s difficulty will be in failing to sell the idea of the “holy cow” without being seen as oddballs in today’s world by the beef-eating foreign investors.
‘The British origin of Cow Slaughter in India’ NEW DELHI: After his annual Haj, Maulana Hasrat Mohani – a Congress leader during the national movement, among the founders of the Communist party and member of the Constituent Assembly – always visited Mathura and Barsana for a “darshan” of Krishna and Radha. He did not visit Mathura to build up a constituency of admirers. But the fact that these visits pleased his friends was a source of great joy to him. In deference to the original cowherd, the Maulana never ate beef. Vigilante gangs out to terminate beef eating should visit fancy restaurants including ones in five-star hotels and ask for the menu card. They may find “beef steak” listed, sometimes on “sizzling platters”. A restrained line of action would be to send the steak to forensic laboratories which must soon begin to mushroom to cushion the current hullaballoo. All the “beef steak” samples will, without exception, turn out to be buffalo. Anti-beef agitators have clearly not come up the social ladder. Their more
prosperous cousins choose not to look at their progeny drooling over beef steak at Smith and Woolensky in New York. In a globalized world where our children are exposed to the blandishments of Angus steak in Britain and Kobe steak in Japan, can dietary restrictions really be mandated? A valuable video clip in my archives shows Dara Singh, the original Hanuman of Bollywood, stepping out of Carnivore, the celebrated restaurant outside Nairobi, where zebra, wildebeest,
giraffe, crocodile meat is among the less exotic fare roasted over a giant fire. This may be a little extraneous to our theme. More to point might be the query: how did beef become the Muslim’s diet? It was not the staple diet in the places of origin of the Delhi Sultans and the Moghuls. They ate mutton, camel meat, chicken, fish, geese, antelope and other game. Also, contrary to the popular belief, they ate plenty of vegetable. How then did the converts,
who constitute 80-90 percent of the Muslim population, develop a taste for cow? Atal Bihari Vajpayee invited famous Gandhian scholar Dharampal to research the origins of cow slaughter in India. Based on original British documents at India House in Britain, Dharampal and his assistant T.M. Mukundan submitted their study in 2002. The title of the book gives the story away: ‘The British Origin of Cow Slaughter in India.’
The thesis is straightforward: the rapid increase in the number of the troops following the uprising of 1857 caused an increase in the number of slaughter houses to provide beef for the soldiers. The “bakar Qasab”, so far employed largely in the sale of mutton, was transformed into “Qasai” for the slaughterhouses. Here was a situation custom made for the authors of Divide-and-Rule. British officers could easily point to the Muslim Qasai whenever Hindu-Muslim tensions were required. Queen Victoria gave the game away in a note she wrote on December 8, 1893 to her Viceroy, Lord Lansdowne: “Though the Muhammadans’ cowkilling is made the pretext for the agitation, it is in fact directed against us, who kill far more cows for our army, etc. than the Muhammadans.” In a speech in Muzaffarpur, Mahatma Gandhiji developed on this theme: “If we cannot stop cow slaughter by the British, we have no right to raise our hands against Muslims.”

‘Powerless’ UNSC riles India

alling the Security Council ineffective and powerless, India has lashed out against its lack of accountability and transparency in mandating peacekeeping operations and blamed it for the rising casualties among peacekeepers. “We are dismayed at the opaque manner in which the Security Council continues to mandate peace operations, without any accountability or transparency,” India’s Permanent Representative Asoke Kumar Mukerji said on October 12 at a General Assembly session on peacekeeping operations. “The human costs of this failing are evident in both the rising number of casualties among UN peacekeepers, as well as an alarming growth in the number of civilians, now reaching 60 million according to the Secretary General, whose lives are being disrupted by the conflicts

that an ineffective Security Council is powerless to resolve,” Mukerji added. As of the end of September, 85 peacekeepers have died this year. Mukerji appealed to Assembly President Mogens Lykketoft to “take the lead to prioritize agreement on an early reform of the Security Council during this 70th Session”. He also reiterated India’s consis-
tent demand of implementing “in letter and spirit” the UN Charter provisions that require the Security Council to consult with troop-providing countries when issuing peacekeeping mandates. Speaking at the session, SecretaryGeneral Ban Ki-moon also backed the call for better coordination between the Security Council and
the troop-contributors. “A shared understanding of the tasks involved between the Security Council and the troop and police contributing countries was required, as was cooperation with national actors and local communities,” he said. The session was centered on Ban’s report on implementing the recommendations of the High Level Independent Panel on Peace Operations (HIPPO) which was headed by Jose Ramos-Horta and included Abhijit Guha, a retired Indian lieutenant general. Mukerji said that implementation report had great importance for India, which is the largest overall troop contributor to UN peace operations, with over 185,000 troops that have served in 48 of the 69 UN missions. India currently has 7,794 personnel under UN’s blue flag. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has offered to increase India’s troopcontribution by 10 percent.
Palestinian students appeal to Mukherjee against Israel
RAMALLAH (PALESTINE): A sudden congregation of hundreds of angry students at Al-Quds University near here to condemn alleged aggression of Israeli forces, led to cancellation of an event that was to be attended by President Pranab Mukherjee on October 13. The protest at the varsity at Abu Dees, some 25 km from here, was against the alleged killing of some students by Israeli forces in Jerusalem. The agitators not only wanted the president, who was at the campus at that time, to hear their voices and act, but also questioned as to why India was warming up to their “enemy” — the Israelis.

akistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will discuss the stalled dialogue between Pakistan and India with US President Barack Obama during their upcoming meeting on October 22, adviser to the prime minister on national security Sartaj Aziz said. “A number of other issues would also be discussed between the US president and Sharif,” Dawn quoted Aziz as saying on October 12. He said Indian state institutions, including the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), are involved in terror activities in Pakistan, adding that there would be no compromise on Pakistan’s foreign policy. Rising tensions between the two countries are
“hazardous to world peace”, he added. Aziz said the dossier alleging Indian involvement in subversive activities in Pakistan, which was given to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon last month, would also be shared with other friendly countries.
The comments come after the Delhi-bound Samjhauta Express, carrying both Indian and Pakistani passengers, was recently called back from the border to the Lahore railway station after Indian authorities denied its entry in India.
Islamic State calls for jihad against US, Russia IANS, DAMASCUS
T
he Islamic State (IS) militant group on October 13 called for a jihad against Russia and the US for their “crusader’s war” in the Middle East. In an audio message, the group’s spokesman Abu Muhammad alAdnani said, “Oh Muslim youth everywhere come on for jihad against the Russians and Americans, because it’s a crusader war against the Muslims; the war of the atheists and idolaters against the believers,” Xinhua reported. The message came just a day after the Al Qaeda-affiliated Nusra Front
called for attacks against Russia. Leader of Nusra Front Abu Muhammad al-Jolani urged the extremists in the Caucasus to “kill the Russians” in retaliation to the
Russian airstrikes in Syria. Al-Jolani urged all of the jihadi factions on ground to stop their infighting and “postpone the differences until the break of the crusader Western and
Russian war on the Levant land (Syria)”. The Russian air strikes started in Syria on September 30, targeting the positions of the Nusra Front and the IS among other terror groups in the war-torn country. The strikes have raised the ire of the Syrian rebels, as several rebel groups called on regional countries to form an alliance against the Russian-led coalition, according to a statement released last week. In the statement, over 41 rebel groups, including the powerful Ahrar al-Sham Movement, deemed Russian military intervention as an “occupation”, and urged regional countries to form a coalition.

odiyar dynasty’s new head and Mysuru’s titular Maharaja Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja on October 13 ascended the golden throne in the Amba Vilas Palace here, marking the first day of the 10-day Dasara festival. Dressed in traditional robes, with the royal headgear his ancestors sported once, the 23-year-old performed various rituals before climbing the throne around noon, considered auspicious, in the private portion of the royal palace in the city, about 150km from Bengaluru. “The khas durbar, which is the private area of the royal family,
came alive after a year with our new maharaja sitting on the throne amid chanting of Vedic hymns and rituals,” a palace official told IANS. After Srikantadatta Wodiyar passed away on December 10, 2013 in Bengaluru without naming a successor, the royal sword
(pattada katti) was placed on the throne at the start of the Navaratri festival in the absence of his successor until his widow Pramoda Devi adopted Yaduveer. His coronation took place in May this year. Yaduveer gave a royal salute as the police band played the erstwhile Mysore state anthem “Kayo Sri Gowri” in the background. He also received offerings from 24 mutts and temples, including Chamundi Hill, Srirangapatna, Melukote and Sringeri Sharada peetam and blessings of palace priests. “He also offered prayers to the idol of Hindu goddess Chamundeshwari at ‘kanna thotti’ (cradle) in the palace premises after holding royal durbar from the throne,” the official added.

Hailing from Kidangoor in Kottayam district, Prabhakar did his graduation in Fine Arts from the prestigious Baroda School of Arts in 1998 and reached Melbourne in 2008 along with his wife who now works as a social worker. Prabhakar is not resting on his laurels and is trying to explore the possibilities of a fusion of Australia’s rich artistic tradition with his own. “I am now looking forward to meet indigenous Australian artists to work with them and learn from them. I also would like to teach them some of our Indian traditions,” added Prabhakar.

The fashionistas of the capital and buyers across the globe saw over 100 designers showcasing their best at the fashion event, which concluded late on Sunday. eavy smoking and alcohol use cause distinctive changes to human DNA, leading to an accelerated premature aging, scientists reveal. Interestingly, moderate alcohol use -- about one to two drinks per day -- was correlated with the healthiest aging, while very low and high consumption were linked to accelerated aging. Biological aging is the progressive decline in physiological ability to meet demands that occurs over time. It is due to the accumulation of damage at the cellular level and the rate of biological aging is determined by both environmental and genetic factors. While calculating the difference between biological age and chronological age, the researchers found that all levels of
exposure to smoke were associated with significantly premature aging. Using data from the publicly “Gene Expression available Omnibus”, Robert A Philibert from University of Iowa analysed patterns of DNA methylation - a molecular modification to DNA that affects when and how strongly a gene is expressed. Prior research had shown that methylation patterns change in predictable ways as people age as well as in response to cigarette smoke and alcohol.
en are most jealous of sexual infidelity but when it comes to women, emotional infidelity is what makes them the most jealous, reveals a study. If your partner has sex with someone else, it is considered infidelity even if no emotions are involved. But it is also considered infidelity when your significant other develops a close personal relationship with someone else, even if there is no sex or physical intimacy involved. Norwegian researchers now show that men and women react differently to various types of infidelity and evolutionary psychology may help explain why this may be. “Men and women’s psychology is similar in most areas — but not when it comes to reproduction,” said Mons Bendixen from Norwegian University of Science and
Technology. Recent research on jealousy considers two main types of infidelity: Having sex with a person outside the relationship, or developing an emotional attachment to a person outside the relationship. In the recent study, over 1,000 participants were randomly given one of four versions of a questionnaire about jealousy. ‘We found clear sex differences in the jealousy responses among
those who had to choose which aspect of infidelity was most upsetting to them,” the authors noted. According to evolutionary perspective, men and women over thousands of generations have had to adapt to different challenges that are related to reproduction. Infidelity is one such challenge. Psychologists believe that women are especially sensitive to signs that the man is devoting time and attention to other women.

‘Bruce Lee’ is not trite: Director
Ram Charan to launch prod houses
Clarifying that the film can’t be branded as an actioner, Vaitla said it has all the elements to entertain family audiences too HARICHARAN PUDIPEDDI, CHENNAI
D
irector Sreenu Vaitla says his forthcoming Telugu film “Bruce Lee: The Fighter” is as commercial as any of previous films but adds that he has attempted something different and has deviated from his regular template. “One thing my films always guarantee is entertainment. ‘Bruce Lee’ too is loaded with all the usual elements of entertainment but in the process I’ve deviated from the regulate template of making commercial films,” Vaitla told IANS. “I’ve made films where stories were told in an entertaining way and ones where I’ve tried to fit entertainment in the story. ‘Bruce Lee’ falls in the first category of films and that’s why I think it will work,” he said, and added that audiences will find
something different in the film, which hits the screens on Friday worldwide. Clarifying that the film can’t be branded as an actioner, Vaitla said it has all the elements to entertain family audiences too. “Ram plays a stuntman and people around him call him Bruce Lee,
Trisha Krishnan attracts fans galore on ‘Nayaki’ set CHENNAI: People from various villages gathered to meet southern actress Trisha Krishnan on the sets of Tamil-Telugu bilingual Nayaki in Zaheerabad, a town on the border of Telangana and Karnataka. “Over a thousand people from nearby villages gathered at the shooting spot to meet Trisha when we shot in Zaheerabad. This happened on all the four days of the shoot and just ten of us had to control the crowd,” the film’s director Govi told IANS. Amazed at the fan-base Trisha enjoys as a star, the director was equally surprised that everybody in the crowd was well-behaved. “Nobody tried to gatecrash. They just gathered to watch Trisha and the shoot. It so happens that it was the first time a film crew had gone to shoot in that place, so it doubled the excitement of the locals,” he said.
Nearly 60 percent of the film has already been completed and the team will soon start a month-long schedule in Hyderabad. The latest addition to the cast is actress Poonam Kaur. “She plays an important guest role. Puunam is a very talented actress and she was apt for this character,” said Govi adding that she has already shot for her part.
Director Sasi bags J.C. Daniel award IANS, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM
I
.V. Sasi, one of the most popular Malayalam film directors, was Monday announced winner of the prestigious J.C. Daniel award for 2014 in recognition of his sterling contributions to the Malayalam film industry. The award that was announced here on October 12 is considered the top one in the industry and given by the Kerala government to honour a film personality for the work he has done.
The jury for the award was chaired by eminent writer M.T. Vasudevan Nair, and comprised actor I.V. Sasi Madhu, and Kerala State Chalachitra Academy chairman T. Rajivnath among others. The career of Sasi, 66, who hails from Kozhikode and is settled in Chennai, as a hugely successful director began after the stupendous success of Avalude Raavukal (Her Nights) in 1978.
it’s a pet name and it has nothing to do with the genre of the film. There’s comedy, romance and drama to appeal to everybody, so people shouldn’t treat this as an action film,” he said, and lauded the efforts of Ram for the preparation for his role. Ram learnt mixed mar-
tial arts for the film and trained with experts in Hong Kong. “He worked extremely hard and since we worked on a tight schedule, he barely had time to relax. We had decided on the release date even before we went on the floors, so obviously we couldn’t afford any sort of delay,” he said. After eight long years, megastar Chiranjeevi returns to face the arc lights in a cameo role. This is the second time Vaitla has teamed up with the 60-year old actor. “I worked with him a decade ago in ‘Andarivadu’, and honestly, directing him in this film was more enjoyable. He looks even more energetic than he was back then and that has hugely benefited the film,” he said. Produced by DVV Danayya, the film also stars Kriti Kharbanda, Tisca Chopra and Arun Vijay in important roles.
CHENNAI: Actor Ram Charan, who awaits the release of forthcoming Telugu actioner Bruce Lee: The Fighter, says he will soon be launching two new production houses and also work with his star uncle Pawan Kalyan. “I’ll be starting two new production houses Konidela Productions and White Horse Entertainments. My first film as a producer will be my dad’s (Chiranjeevi’s) most awaited 150th film which will be announced soon,” Ram told IANS. He also said he’ll be doing a film with his uncle next year. Ram also said a project with filmmaker Gautham Menon is still on.

No big deal in hiking pay: Rakul Preet Singh IANS, CHENNAI
A
ctress Rakul Preet Singh, who has emerged as one of the most sought after heroines in Telugu filmdom, says every actor deserves a pay hike and it should be directly proportional to the demand factor. “If an actor is in demand, then I don’t see the problem in paying him or her more. Everybody deserves a pay hike in their respective jobs and since I’m doing well in my profession, I deserve what I take as remuneration now,” Rakul told IANS.
She’s rumored to have charged a whopping Rs.15 million for her forthcoming Telugu outing Bruce Lee: The Fighter. Refusing to comment on her pay, she said: “I’m at the peak of my career, so what’s wrong if I charge more? I don’t understand what the big deal about hiking my pay is.” Rakul is paired with Ram Charan in the film, which is directed by Srinu Vaitla, and is slated to release worldwide on October 16. Rakul, who currently has Telugu films Naanaku Prematho and Sarainodu in her kitty, feels that every actor deserves a hike.

Hindu gods as superheroes in US film NEW DELHI: US film production studio Disney-Pixar's short movie Sanjay's Super Team is set to present Hindu gods as superheroes on Indian screens in December. Directed by Sanjay Patel, Sanjay’s Super Team is his personal story and a “mostly true” chronicle
of his journey to understand the Hindu world that is important to his parents. The animation film shows how he uses his own experience to tell the story of a young, first generation Indian-American boy whose love for western pop culture comes into conflict with his father’s traditions. In the short, the boy is seen absorbed in the world of cartoons and comics. His father, on the other hand, tries to draw him into the traditions of his Hindu practice. While he tries to follow the tradition with reluctance, the boy soon finds himself in another world where a trio of Hindu deities, including Hanuman — who represents strength and valor — are fighting a villain. The ending is an emotional one. The film will be released on December 4 in India.

Confident, erudite as a lawyer, she portrays the anguish of a single mother searching for her daughter with equal ease and aplomb. Irrfan as Inspector Yohan, who is Anuradha’s childhood friend, delivers one of his best performances. His character is multi-faceted: quirky,
emotional, caring, efficient and corrupt. Cumulatively, these make his character interesting and endearing. The taut and well written screenplay is cleverly layered, giving the film an intrigue factor throughout. Never once is there a dull moment

However, despite all these, they failed because their planning, execution, and monitoring were not done on scientific lines”, opined Farooq and substantiated this with convincing facts and figures. Food is a central part of the festivities, but unlike the traditional roast turkey of Christmas, each family prepares its favorite dish. Sweets are exchanged between friends and neighbors and food given to the needy. Shopping is a major activity in Diwali and consumer purchases rival the Christmas shopping season in the West. Diwali was first celebrated in the White House in 2003 and was given official status by the US Congress in 2007 by the former president George W. Bush. Barack Obama became the first president to personally attend Diwali celebrations at the White House in 2009. Additional information is available on our web site https://www.facebook. com/iacoab

The South Asian community in the US has a three to five-fold increase in CAD. Cricket icons to play on US soil
BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK -- Global cricket icons Sachin Tendulkar and Shane Warne will headline a star-studded lineup of renowned cricket players from around the world in the inaugural “Cricket All-Stars,” a three-game series in New York City, Houston and Los Angeles. The historic tour marks the first time these legends have played in the US, and also renews the famous rivalry between “Master Blaster” Tendulkar and “King of Spin” Warne. The “Cricket All-Stars” kicks off on November 7 at Citi Field in New York City with a special opening ceremony prior to the match as well as other functions and galas. The second match will be on November 11 at Minute Maid Park in Houston. The final match in the series will be on November 14 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, followed by a special trophy presentation to the winning team. The format will be T20, a much shorter and boisterous form of cricket with the games taking around three hours instead of multiple days. Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar and Australian spinner Shane Warne will each captain a hand-picked team. “Sachin’s Blasters” and “Warne’s Warriors” will feature some of the best players to ever play cricket hailing from eight different countries, including Ricky Ponting (Australia), Brian Lara (West Indies), Muttiah Muralitharan (Sri Lanka), Wasim Akram (Pakistan), Jonty Rhodes (South Africa) and Michael Vaughan (England), among others. “Americans are so passionate about sports, and I think there’s a huge potential for cricket to take

Indian teacher is held for sex with student BY A STAFF WRITER CEAN,IN -- An IndianAmerican substitute teacher in the US state of Indiana has been arrested on charges of paying money for having sex with a teenaged male student. Mihir Patel, 24, was arrested on October 8 and released the same day on a bond of $250. Prosecutor Brad Cooper has charged that Patel paid the teenager $150 and $200 on two occasions for having sex ager student--once at a motel and other time at the house of a relative--this summer. However, Patel would not be charged for having sex with a minor as the teen is between 16 and 18 years old. According to Indiana State law, a teenager above 16 years can consent to sexual activity. The issue was first reported by the school authorities after which the police began the investigation. During the investigation, the teenager told the police that he and Patel had met online in June or July, but he had not known Patel’s name. He identified him in a photo lineup and told the police he was a substitute at his school, the charging documents said. Patel was hired by the school authorities for one year as a substitute teacher after a thorough background check. His term as a substitute teacher--a temporary position--has now been terminated by the school.

off,” said Tendulkar. “This is also the first time that international cricket will be played in these beautiful baseball stadiums in New York City, Houston and Los Angeles, which will be a lot of fun. “We’re also planning some other events and festivities in each city so we can reach as many fans as possible. It would be great someday to see cricket bats right alongside the baseball bats, basketballs and soccer balls in America.” “We’ve signed all the top players you’d ever want to see,” said Shane Warne. “I’m excited for cricket fans in the US to be able to see these amazing players for the first time, and I also think that the T20 format will appeal to new audiences who have never seen or played cricket before. “I’m really looking forward to the matches in November, and helping to grow
the sport of cricket in America.” As a sponsor of “Cricket All-Stars,” MasterCard will provide its cardholders exclusive access to event tickets and priceless experiences throughout the series. A few lucky cardholders will even have the opportunity to meet some of the players. “Cricket All-Stars” is being produced by NYC-based Leverage Agency, a fullservice sports and entertainment marketing company. Leverage will also handle the marketing and promotion for the event. Sponsors for “Cricket All-Stars” include MasterCard, State Farm® and Uber. “It’s been a dream of mine to help bring the best of cricket to America,” said Ben Sturner, CEO of Leverage Agency. “Cricket is the second most popular sport in the world and we couldn’t ask for better partners than Sachin and Shane on this exciting venture.”

5,000 benefit from CKGS visa camps
BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK -- Cox & Kings Global Services (CKGS), in association with the Federation of Indian Associations of the Tristate of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, has completed 30 visa camps across 20 locations in the United States with over 5,000 applications processed. According to a press release, these camps have facilitated the visa, overseas citizenship of India and renunciation servicing of thousands of applicants over six months. The visa camps began on February 28 in Iselin, NJ, and concluded in the San Francisco Bay Area on September 12. Over 5,000 applicants were serviced and advised about their documentation, enabling them to complete their applications with CKGS. “The primary aim behind setting up the visa camps across various locations was to bring in convenience to those who wish to travel to India from the US,” said Kiran Nambiar, vice president and country manager of CKGS. With support from the Embassy of India, Washington D.C. and the Consulate General of India in New York, Chicago, Houston, San Francisco and Atlanta, CKGS was able to clear the backlog of incomplete and pending visa and OCI applications, said Ankur Vaidya, FIA president, in a press release. “The visa camps have played a critical

Prescription pills worth $1,200 seized, 2 held
Jhabeb Malique BY A STAFF WRITER RO S PE C T PA R K ( N J ) - Investigators seized about $1,200 worth of prescription pills and arrested two men after a drug probe in the borough. Jhabeb Malique, 25, a borough resident, is accused of dealing narcotics from his home, according to Passaic County Sheriff Richard H. Berdnik. He faces eight drug-related offenses and was ordered held in lieu of $50,000 bail at the county jail. As the police watched on September 27, Tony Laterra (21) arrived at the house and engaged in a drug transaction, the sheriff said. Borough detectives followed him away from the area and pulled over his car. A search during the stop revealed five Roxicodone pills. Laterra, of Palisades Park, was charged with drug possession and released on a summons. Investigators also stopped Malique outside his residence and found more of the painkillers. Berdnik said the police seized another 35 pills along with $463 in suspected drug proceeds at Malique’s home. “This investigation would not have been possible without the continuous hard work of the Prospect Park Patrol division,” Berdnik said in a statement.

$5k fine for false info on ‘terrorist links’
BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK -- Jacob Thomas, 60, of Queens, confessed to authorities that he was trying to keep his former flame, Shakeela Sarassathi, from landing at Kennedy. A married man who called 911 to falsely report his ex-mistress was a “terrorist” after learning she was flying in from India has been sentenced Brooklyn Federal Court to probation and a $5,000 fine. Jacob Thomas, 60, of Queens, confessed to authorities that he was trying to keep his former flame, Shakeela Sarassathi, from landing at Kennedy Airport and complicating his family situation. Judge Frederic Block said he understood that Thomas’ actions were “fraught with domestic intrigue…but that doesn’t mean you didn’t do a bone-headed thing.” Thomas made two calls to the emergency line claiming the woman was traveling without a visa, and was involved in some kind of terrorist plot.
N role in bringing the community closer to the Indian Consulate. The outreach efforts mean that consular services are a pleasant experience now,” said Dnyaneshwar Mulay, Consul General of India, New York. Many patrons of the visa camps provided overwhelmingly positive feedback on CKGS’ services, citing it as the most
seamless experience they have ever had with an Indian consulate. “This type of consular services camp is very beneficial to the Indian community. No hassle and no headache. The staff was very much helpful every which way,” N. Baffana, a patron of one of the visa camps, was quoted as saying in a press release.

Indian couple donates $1 million to hospital BY A STAFF WRITER MSTERDAM, NY-- A new, $18-million outpatient pavilion at St. Mary’s Healthcare here is nearly ready to open, thanks in part to a $1- million donation from Govind and Jyothi Rao, an Indian American couple. The family had previously pledged $250,000 to the facility at the start of its capital campaign last year but increased it to $1 million earlier this month, according to an announcement from St. Mary’s. Construction on the 40,000‐square‐foot Rao Outpatient Pavilion, located next to the former Amsterdam Memorial Hospital campus on Route 30, got under way last October. The facility will include a Cancer Medicine Center with radiation oncology, medical oncology and infusion therapy, as well as the Women’s Breast Health Center, an expanded medical imaging center, laboratory services, outpatient registration, pre‐surgical teaching and testing, and a new urgent care center. The pavilion opened on October 12. Victor Giulianelli, president and CEO of St. Mary’s Healthcare, said the Raos established “an exceptional philanthropic pace for others” with their initial $250,000 donation, which spurred other six‐figure donations. Rao runs a pediatric practice in Amsterdam. The family, which includes eight other pediatricians, founded the Neena Rao Charitable Corp. to support and promote health care and education for women and

Judge Frederic Block said he understood that Thomas’ actions were “fraught with domestic intrigue…but that doesn’t mean you didn’t do a bone-headed thing.” Thomas made two calls to the emergency line claiming the woman was traveling without a visa, and was involved in some kind of terrorist plot.

children in the United States and in India, where Rao still has many family members. “Back home, I am from a middle-class family,” Rao said reently. “I came to this country almost 50 years ago with two suitcases and $4 in my pocket and an education. I believe in education.” Rao settled in Amsterdam, where he raised a family of doctors. He said the
donation was a way for him to give back to the city. “Fortunately, I have been very good in practice. God has been great to us,” he said. “My children are on their own now. They’re doing very well. And whatever money I have, I don’t take it when I pass away. The Amsterdam community helped me a lot. So this is my time to pay them back.
12-year-old Indian finds ways to treat allergies BY A STAFF WRITER ARYLAND -- An Indian American tween is one of the 10 youngsters who progressed to the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge finals. With her project for the competition, 12-year-old Iris Gupta, who attends sixth grade in Maryland, hopes to revolutionize the way allergy symptoms are alleviated. Typical allergy medicine such as Bendaryl or Claritin treats allergy symptoms after they occur by inhibiting histamines, which are released in response to allergens or injury. Gupta wanted to ascertain whether there was a way to treat allergies before they started acting up. She looked into gold nanoparticles that could block allergens from binding to the body’s Immunoglobulin E antibodies,
M BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK-A recent survey of 1,789 Brits who claimed to be vegetarians found that 37 per cent of the respondents admitted to eating meat after having too much to drink. The survey by the discount website VoucherCodesPro found that while some break the rules, the majority of vegetarians stuck to their dietary restrictions. At least 63 per cent of vegetarians reported that they did not eat meat regardless of how much they drank. When asked how often they ate meat, responses varied--34 per cent said every time they drank, 26 per cent said fairly often, 22 per cent said rarely, and 18 per cent said occasionally. The most popular meat consumed by drunk vegetarians was kebab meat. Beef burgers were the second-most popular drunk snack, followed by bacon, fried chicken, and pork sausages. Vegetarians reported that they spent an average of about $7.40 a sitting on their meaty midnight meals. Previously, a 2014 study conducted by the Humane Research Council found that 84 percent of American vegetarians will eventually start consuming meat again at some point in their lives.

a part of the blood responsible for fighting off allergens. The relatively inexpensive nanoparticles could be injected or inhaled at the beginning of allergy season, and could alleviate the inflammation and discomfort much of the population suffers from as a result of allergies. The nascent prodigy explained her project in a video. One in five people in the US have either allergy or asthma symptoms, while 55 per cent of the population is sensitive to one or more allergens. The Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge is the “ultimate middle-school science competition” for kids in Grades 5 to 8 across the U.S. This year’s finalists worked on projects ranging from new ways to keep people from driving while intoxicated to devices that measure car temperatures.
Murder case accused pleads ‘not guilty’ BY A STAFF WRITER AKLAND, CA -- A man charged with murder in the 2004 killing of a Northern California Indian American tire shop manager who had been called to testify against him in court has pleaded not guilty in the case. Larry Darnell Fuller Jr. of Redwood City pleaded not guilty on September 14. The 45-year-old man has been charged with capital murder in Prisheen Sanjay Krishna’s death. Fuller was charged with grand theft after failing to pay his bill at a Castro Valley tire shop, which Krishna managed, in 2003.
O
Krishna, 36, was shot and killed a day before he was scheduled to testify at Fuller’s preliminary hearing. Authorities say Fuller was found carrying notes containing Krishna’s personal information, including his address and license plate numbers, days after the killing. He remains jailed without bail. According to the Alameda County Sheriff ’s Office, Krishna told family members he was afraid to testify against Fuller, because, four years prior, in 2000, he cheated the tire shop out of paying another bill and the next day followed up by robbing the shop at gunpoint. The alleged murderer pleaded guilty
in the grand theft case but managed to avoid jail time for the killing. In 2009, Contra Costa County authorities handed the case to the Alameda County Sheriff ’s Office, and detectives discovered new evidence leading to Fuller being arrested and charged with capital murder this January. If convicted, the special circumstance allegation that Fuller committed murder to prevent testimony makes him eligible for the death penalty or life in prison without parole. Fuller remains in jail without bail and is scheduled to return to court October 19. A preliminary hearing is set for November 2.
