India-US ties growing deeper under Modi

WASHINGTON: The US House of Representative passed a bill on October 9 to appeal the 40-year-old oil export ban, but its future was uncertain facing a veto threatened by the White House. The House approved the bill by 261 to 159 lifting the crude oil export ban first put into place in December 1975 to counter the 1970s Arab oil embargo against Western countries which has once caused US domestic gasoline prices to skyrocket. But with only 26 Democrats voting in favor, the bill failed to gain the 290 votes necessary to overturn a presidential veto. Representatives who support lifting the ban believed the current oil supply situation is quite different from the time the ban was first enacted as

MUMBAI: The Shiv Sena on October 13 patted its activists who blackened senior journalist Sudheendra Kulkarni’s face for hosting a book launch of Pakistan’s former foreign minister Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri but a party leader said the Sena-BJP alliance was unlikely to snap. Sena president Uddhav Thackeray met the party activists who carried out the widely condemned ink attack on October 12 on Kulkarni, a longtime former aide to BJP leader L.K. Advani. The activists, whom some Sena leaders said were “heroes”, were called to the Thackeray clan’s residence in Bandra East where the party chief showered praises on them. On October 12 morning, the six activists accosted Kulkarni outside his Sion home, shouted slogans and smeared black ink on his face. They were protesting against Kulkarni’s decision to host Kasuri for hosting the release of Kasuri book, “Neither a Hawk Nor a Dove: An Insider Account of Pakistan’s Foreign Policy”. arendra Modi is probably learning the veracity of Stalin’s insightful aphorism that while one death is a tragedy, a million is a statistic. In a country which has seen innumerable communal riots over the decades, and a 25 percent rise in inter-faith violence since Modi came to power, the furore over the death of one Muslim in a village near Delhi must be something of a puzzle and also hugely disconcerting for the government because it cannot quite anticipate what the fallout will be over a period of time. Its concerns must be all the greater because the incident persuaded President Pranab Mukherjee to deviate from a written script at a Rashtrapati Bhavan function and call for preserving the nation’s “core” values. The president’s appeal made the prime minister break what the New York Times once called his “dangerous silence” on the attacks on minorities and urge Hindus and Muslims to fight poverty and not

Moreover, the government’s difficulty will be in failing to sell the idea of the “holy cow” without being seen as oddballs in today’s world by the beef-eating foreign investors.

‘The British origin of Cow Slaughter in India’ NEW DELHI: After his annual Haj, Maulana Hasrat Mohani – a Congress leader during the national movement, among the founders of the Communist party and member of the Constituent Assembly – always visited Mathura and Barsana for a “darshan” of Krishna and Radha. He did not visit Mathura to build up a constituency of admirers. But the fact that these visits pleased his friends was a source of great joy to him. In deference to the original cowherd, the Maulana never ate beef. Vigilante gangs out to terminate beef eating should visit fancy restaurants including ones in five-star hotels and ask for the menu card. They may find “beef steak” listed, sometimes on “sizzling platters”. A restrained line of action would be to send the steak to forensic laboratories which must soon begin to mushroom to cushion the current hullaballoo. All the “beef steak” samples will, without exception, turn out to be buffalo. Anti-beef agitators have clearly not come up the social ladder. Their more

prosperous cousins choose not to look at their progeny drooling over beef steak at Smith and Woolensky in New York. In a globalized world where our children are exposed to the blandishments of Angus steak in Britain and Kobe steak in Japan, can dietary restrictions really be mandated? A valuable video clip in my archives shows Dara Singh, the original Hanuman of Bollywood, stepping out of Carnivore, the celebrated restaurant outside Nairobi, where zebra, wildebeest,

giraffe, crocodile meat is among the less exotic fare roasted over a giant fire. This may be a little extraneous to our theme. More to point might be the query: how did beef become the Muslim’s diet? It was not the staple diet in the places of origin of the Delhi Sultans and the Moghuls. They ate mutton, camel meat, chicken, fish, geese, antelope and other game. Also, contrary to the popular belief, they ate plenty of vegetable. How then did the converts,

who constitute 80-90 percent of the Muslim population, develop a taste for cow? Atal Bihari Vajpayee invited famous Gandhian scholar Dharampal to research the origins of cow slaughter in India. Based on original British documents at India House in Britain, Dharampal and his assistant T.M. Mukundan submitted their study in 2002. The title of the book gives the story away: ‘The British Origin of Cow Slaughter in India.’

The thesis is straightforward: the rapid increase in the number of the troops following the uprising of 1857 caused an increase in the number of slaughter houses to provide beef for the soldiers. The “bakar Qasab”, so far employed largely in the sale of mutton, was transformed into “Qasai” for the slaughterhouses. Here was a situation custom made for the authors of Divide-and-Rule. British officers could easily point to the Muslim Qasai whenever Hindu-Muslim tensions were required. Queen Victoria gave the game away in a note she wrote on December 8, 1893 to her Viceroy, Lord Lansdowne: “Though the Muhammadans’ cowkilling is made the pretext for the agitation, it is in fact directed against us, who kill far more cows for our army, etc. than the Muhammadans.” In a speech in Muzaffarpur, Mahatma Gandhiji developed on this theme: “If we cannot stop cow slaughter by the British, we have no right to raise our hands against Muslims.”

The session was centered on Ban’s report on implementing the recommendations of the High Level Independent Panel on Peace Operations (HIPPO) which was headed by Jose Ramos-Horta and included Abhijit Guha, a retired Indian lieutenant general. Mukerji said that implementation report had great importance for India, which is the largest overall troop contributor to UN peace operations, with over 185,000 troops that have served in 48 of the 69 UN missions. India currently has 7,794 personnel under UN’s blue flag. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has offered to increase India’s troopcontribution by 10 percent.

Interestingly, moderate alcohol use -- about one to two drinks per day -- was correlated with the healthiest aging, while very low and high consumption were linked to accelerated aging. Biological aging is the progressive decline in physiological ability to meet demands that occurs over time. It is due to the accumulation of damage at the cellular level and the rate of biological aging is determined by both environmental and genetic factors. While calculating the difference between biological age and chronological age, the researchers found that all levels of

exposure to smoke were associated with significantly premature aging. Using data from the publicly “Gene Expression available Omnibus”, Robert A Philibert from University of Iowa analysed patterns of DNA methylation - a molecular modification to DNA that affects when and how strongly a gene is expressed. Prior research had shown that methylation patterns change in predictable ways as people age as well as in response to cigarette smoke and alcohol.

KOLKATA: In a historic reunion which they may never forget, the Mohun Bagan batch of 1977 relived their glorious encounter against football legend Pele in an exhibition match 38 years ago, while being felicitated by the “King of Football” himself. Sharing the stage with Pele, at an event in the Netaji Indoor Stadium here, the Mohun Bagan greats reminisced the raindrenched September 24, 1977, when Pele and his New York Cosmos club set foot on the hallowed cricket venue Eden Gardens. Captained by Subrata Bhattacharya, the Bagan side had produced a surprising result. After conceding a goal, they rallied brilliantly to lead 2-1 for a substantial part of the game. But Cosmos finally managed an equaliser and the match finished 2-2. Called one by one on the stage, the Bagan players were felicitated by the Brazilian great who handed them a memento and a shawl as they all happily posed for a memorable click while a crowd of 5,000odd cheered lustily. irector Sreenu Vaitla says his forthcoming Telugu film “Bruce Lee: The Fighter” is as commercial as any of previous films but adds that he has attempted something different and has deviated from his regular template. “One thing my films always guarantee is entertainment. ‘Bruce Lee’ too is loaded with all the usual elements of entertainment but in the process I’ve deviated from the regulate template of making commercial films,” Vaitla told IANS. “I’ve made films where stories were told in an entertaining way and ones where I’ve tried to fit entertainment in the story. ‘Bruce Lee’ falls in the first category of films and that’s why I think it will work,” he said, and added that audiences will find

Trisha Krishnan attracts fans galore on ‘Nayaki’ set CHENNAI: People from various villages gathered to meet southern actress Trisha Krishnan on the sets of Tamil-Telugu bilingual Nayaki in Zaheerabad, a town on the border of Telangana and Karnataka. “Over a thousand people from nearby villages gathered at the shooting spot to meet Trisha when we shot in Zaheerabad. This happened on all the four days of the shoot and just ten of us had to control the crowd,” the film’s director Govi told IANS. Amazed at the fan-base Trisha enjoys as a star, the director was equally surprised that everybody in the crowd was well-behaved. “Nobody tried to gatecrash. They just gathered to watch Trisha and the shoot. It so happens that it was the first time a film crew had gone to shoot in that place, so it doubled the excitement of the locals,” he said.

Nearly 60 percent of the film has already been completed and the team will soon start a month-long schedule in Hyderabad. .V. Sasi, one of the most popular Malayalam film directors, was Monday announced winner of the prestigious J.C. Daniel award for 2014 in recognition of his sterling contributions to the Malayalam film industry. The award that was announced here on October 12 is considered the top one in the industry and given by the Kerala government to honour a film personality for the work he has done.

The jury for the award was chaired by eminent writer M.T. Vasudevan Nair, and comprised actor I.V. Sasi Madhu, and Kerala State Chalachitra Academy chairman T. Rajivnath among others. The career of Sasi, 66, who hails from Kozhikode and is settled in Chennai, as a hugely successful director began after the stupendous success of Avalude Raavukal (Her Nights) in 1978.

My first film as a producer will be my dad’s (Chiranjeevi’s) most awaited 150th film which will be announced soon,” Ram told IANS. He also said he’ll be doing a film with his uncle next year. Indian researcher gets prestigious award BY A STAFF WRITER EST LAFAYETTE, IN -- Dr. Arun K. Ghosh, the Ian P. Rothwell Distinguished Professor at Purdue University in chemistry and medicinal chemistry and molecular pharmacology, is the recipient of the 2015 Herbert Newby McCoy Award. The award, announced on September 22, recognizes the Indian American researcher for his extraordinar y contributions in the broad areas of organic, bioorganic and medicinal chemistry that have improved human health. As the 2015 McCoy awardee, Ghosh will deliver the Herbert Newby McCoy Distinguished Lecture on November 9 in Stewart Center’s Fowler Hall. Ghosh’s research group is involved in multidisciplinary projects in synthetic organic, bioorganic and medicinal chemistry. His extensive knowledge of synthetic organic chemistry, coupled with his creativity, has led him to be recognized as one of the world’s foremost leaders in structure-based molecular design. His seminal contributions in this area include his concept-based design and discovery of a potent HIV protease inhibitor, named darunavir, which has shown unprecedented drug resistance profiles against HIV. It was approved by the Food and Drug Administration as the first treatment for multidrug-resistant HIV and received expanded approval in 2008 for all HIV/ AIDS patients, including pediatrics. Ghosh, who joined the Purdue faculty in 2005, also designed a molecule that has significant promise in treating Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, Ghosh and his team created a compound that prevents replication of the virus that causes SARS/MERS and could lead to a treatment for the disease. The compound also provides new insights into a group of proteins found in a range of diseases, including childhood croup, herpes and cancer.

Bolingbrook marks 50th anniversary BY A STAFF WRITER OLINGBROOK, IL -- It is 50 years since Bolingbrook, a Chicago suburb, was incorporated, and it has been its tradition to celebrate the memorable moment every year with a huge parade and marching band. This year’s 2-mile-long parade, which attracts a huge crowd, had colorful decorated floats showcasing the entire ethnic community in Bolingbrook area. The parade started from Bolingbrook high school and moved via Lilly cache pond and ended at the Village Hall. The three-hour event was witnessed by a huge gathering of some 10,000 people and was greeted by Roger Claar, who has been the Mayor of Bolingbrook for the past 28 years, along with the village trustees. The event was recorded as the biggest parade in Bolingbrook. In the past, the IndiaPak joint float has been the major attraction. In order to make it special for the 50th year of incorporation, this year India had its own float led by long-time resident and citizen of Bolingbrook Prem Lalvani.

Diwali or the Festival of Lights is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains throughout the world. Diwali, which coincides with the Hindu New Year, is about the victory of light over darkness, or the triumph of good over evil. The celebrations, free and open to all, are as much a celebration of the diversity of India’s music, dance and cuisine as much as the contribution of Indian Americans, and the community’s assimilation into the City of Aurora. The offender was described as approximately 20 to 25 years old. Diwali was first celebrated in the White House in 2003 and was given official status by the US Congress in 2007 by the former president George W. Bush. IAMA-IL is a non-for-profit professional organization comprising Illinois physicians of Indian origin. About 120 medical and non medical members, including many of IAMA’s past presidents. Opening the event, Dr. Samir Shah, president of the IAMA-IL explained the growing epidemic of heart disease among Asian Indians and the high mortality

rates. Speaking on heart-related problems, including hypertension, heart attack, coronary artery disease, Dr. Shah stated that coronary artery disease was the leading cause of death in America. The South Asian community in the US has a three to five-fold increase in CAD. Obesity, lack of exercise, high cholesterol, and hypertension can quietly damage the body for years before symptoms develop. The “Red Saree Event” was a special educational event organized by IAMA-IL to bring awareness of cardiovascular disease in South East Asians and Diabetes. Cricket icons to play on US soil

BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK -- Global cricket icons Sachin Tendulkar and Shane Warne will headline a star-studded lineup of renowned cricket players from around the world in the inaugural “Cricket All-Stars,” a three-game series in New York City, Houston and Los Angeles. The historic tour marks the first time these legends have played in the US, and also renews the famous rivalry between “Master Blaster” Tendulkar and “King of Spin” Warne. The “Cricket All-Stars” kicks off on November 7 at Citi Field in New York City with a special opening ceremony prior to the match as well as other functions and galas. The second match will be on November 11 at Minute Maid Park in Houston. The final match in the series will be on November 14 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, followed by a special trophy presentation to the winning team. Indian teacher is held for sex with student BY A STAFF WRITER CEAN,IN -- An IndianAmerican substitute teacher in the US state of Indiana has been arrested on charges of paying money for having sex with a teenaged male student. Mihir Patel, 24, was arrested on October 8 and released the same day on a bond of $250. Prosecutor Brad Cooper has charged that Patel paid the teenager $150 and $200 on two occasions for having sex ager student--once at a motel and other time at the house of a relative--this summer. However, Patel would not be charged for having sex with a minor as the teen is between 16 and 18 years old. According to Indiana State law, a teenager above 16 years can consent to sexual activity. The issue was first reported by the school authorities after which the police began the investigation. During the investigation, the teenager told the police that he and Patel had met online in June or July, but he had not known Patel’s name. He identified him in a photo lineup and told the police he was a substitute at his school, the charging documents said. Patel was hired by the school authorities for one year as a substitute teacher after a thorough background check. His term as a substitute teacher--a temporary position--has now been terminated by the school.

5,000 benefit from CKGS visa camps

BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK -- Cox & Kings Global Services (CKGS), in association with the Federation of Indian Associations of the Tristate of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, has completed 30 visa camps across 20 locations in the United States with over 5,000 applications processed. According to a press release, these camps have facilitated the visa, overseas citizenship of India and renunciation servicing of thousands of applicants over six months. The visa camps began on February 28 in Iselin, NJ, and concluded in the San Francisco Bay Area on September 12. Over 5,000 applicants were serviced and advised about their documentation, enabling them to complete their applications with CKGS. “The primary aim behind setting up the visa camps across various locations was to bring in convenience to those who wish to travel to India from the US,” said Kiran Nambiar, vice president and country manager of CKGS. With support from the Embassy of India, Washington D.C. and the Consulate General of India in New York, Chicago, Houston, San Francisco and Atlanta, CKGS was able to clear the backlog of incomplete and pending visa and OCI applications, said Ankur Vaidya, FIA president, in a press release. “The visa camps have played a critical

Jhabeb Malique, 25, a borough resident, is accused of dealing narcotics from his home, according to Passaic County Sheriff Richard H. Berdnik. He faces eight drug-related offenses and was ordered held in lieu of $50,000 bail at the county jail. As the police watched on September 27, Tony Laterra (21) arrived at the house and engaged in a drug transaction, the sheriff said. Borough detectives followed him away from the area and pulled over his car. A search during the stop revealed five Roxicodone pills. Laterra, of Palisades Park, was charged with drug possession and released on a summons. Investigators also stopped Malique outside his residence and found more of the painkillers. Berdnik said the police seized another 35 pills along with $463 in suspected drug proceeds at Malique’s home. “This investigation would not have been possible without the continuous hard work of the Prospect Park Patrol division,” Berdnik said in a statement.

Judge Frederic Block said he understood that Thomas’ actions were “fraught with domestic intrigue…but that doesn’t mean you didn’t do a bone-headed thing.” Thomas made two calls to the emergency line claiming the woman was traveling without a visa, and was involved in some kind of terrorist plot.

Patel apologized to Gan’s family on October 2. Gan’s daughter said she forgave him.

Indian couple donates $1 million to hospital BY A STAFF WRITER MSTERDAM, NY-- A new, $18-million outpatient pavilion at St. Mary’s Healthcare here is nearly ready to open, thanks in part to a $1- million donation from Govind and Jyothi Rao, an Indian American couple. The family had previously pledged $250,000 to the facility at the start of its capital campaign last year but increased it to $1 million earlier this month, according to an announcement from St. Mary’s. Construction on the 40,000‐square‐foot Rao Outpatient Pavilion, located next to the former Amsterdam Memorial Hospital campus on Route 30, got under way last October. The facility will include a Cancer Medicine Center with radiation oncology, medical oncology and infusion therapy, as well as the Women’s Breast Health Center, an expanded medical imaging center, laboratory services, outpatient registration, pre‐surgical teaching and testing, and a new urgent care center. The pavilion opened on October 12. Victor Giulianelli, president and CEO of St. Mary’s Healthcare, said the Raos established “an exceptional philanthropic pace for others” with their initial $250,000 donation, which spurred other six‐figure donations. Rao runs a pediatric practice in Amsterdam. The family, which includes eight other pediatricians, founded the Neena Rao Charitable Corp. to support and promote health care and education for women and

With her project for the competition, 12-year-old Iris Gupta, who attends sixth grade in Maryland, hopes to revolutionize the way allergy symptoms are alleviated. Typical allergy medicine such as Bendaryl or Claritin treats allergy symptoms after they occur by inhibiting histamines, which are released in response to allergens or injury. Gupta wanted to ascertain whether there was a way to treat allergies before they started acting up. She looked into gold nanoparticles that could block allergens from binding to the body’s Immunoglobulin E antibodies,

The survey by the discount website VoucherCodesPro found that while some break the rules, the majority of vegetarians stuck to their dietary restrictions. At least 63 per cent of vegetarians reported that they did not eat meat regardless of how much they drank. When asked how often they ate meat, responses varied--34 per cent said every time they drank, 26 per cent said fairly often, 22 per cent said rarely, and 18 per cent said occasionally. The most popular meat consumed by drunk vegetarians was kebab meat. Beef burgers were the second-most popular drunk snack, followed by bacon, fried chicken, and pork sausages. Vegetarians reported that they spent an average of about $7.40 a sitting on their meaty midnight meals. Previously, a 2014 study conducted by the Humane Research Council found that 84 percent of American vegetarians will eventually start consuming meat again at some point in their lives.

Murder case accused pleads ‘not guilty’ BY A STAFF WRITER AKLAND, CA -- A man charged with murder in the 2004 killing of a Northern California Indian American tire shop manager who had been called to testify against him in court has pleaded not guilty in the case. Larry Darnell Fuller Jr. of Redwood City pleaded not guilty on September 14. The 45-year-old man has been charged with capital murder in Prisheen Sanjay Krishna’s death. Fuller was charged with grand theft after failing to pay his bill at a Castro Valley tire shop, which Krishna managed, in 2003.

Krishna, 36, was shot and killed a day before he was scheduled to testify at Fuller’s preliminary hearing. Authorities say Fuller was found carrying notes containing Krishna’s personal information, including his address and license plate numbers, days after the killing. He remains jailed without bail. According to the Alameda County Sheriff ’s Office, Krishna told family members he was afraid to testify against Fuller, because, four years prior, in 2000, he cheated the tire shop out of paying another bill and the next day followed up by robbing the shop at gunpoint. The alleged murderer pleaded guilty

in the grand theft case but managed to avoid jail time for the killing. In 2009, Contra Costa County authorities handed the case to the Alameda County Sheriff ’s Office, and detectives discovered new evidence leading to Fuller being arrested and charged with capital murder this January. If convicted, the special circumstance allegation that Fuller committed murder to prevent testimony makes him eligible for the death penalty or life in prison without parole. Fuller remains in jail without bail and is scheduled to return to court October 19. A preliminary hearing is set for November 2.
