Modi, Kejriwal among Time’s influential people Made it into the world’s 100 most powerful people’s list ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

B

haratiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal have made it to Time 100 list of the world’s most influential people along with Indian novelist Arundhati Roy. While Modi figures in the category of “leaders”, Kejriwal is listed among the “pioneers” and Roy makes the grade among “icons” in the annual list released last week after an online poll of readers. Modi is described as “The divisive politician poised to lead the world’s largest democracy” in a profile by Fareed Zakaria, the Indian-American host of CNN’s Fareed Zakaria GPS.

Storms leave 35 dead, severe power disruptions

While Modi figures in leaders’ category, Kejriwal is one of the pioneers

“Elections are reactions, often negative reactions. That is surely the explanation for the breathtaking rise of Narendra Modi, who ‘if the opinion polls are accurate’ is poised

to become India’s next Prime Minister, and thus the world leader chosen by the largest electorate on the planet,” he writes. “Modi has a reputation for quick action, encouraging the private sector, and good governance. He also has a reputation for autocratic rule and a dark Hindu-nationalist streak,” he said. “But those concerns are waning in a country desperate for change.” Kejriwal, listed among pioneers, is described as a “powerful outsider in Indian politics” by Rajdeep Sardesai, editor-in-chief of the IBN18 Network. “Kejriwal is the antithesis of the modern-day Indian politician,” Sardesai wrote.

Osama: Americans craving for more revenge IANS, WASHINGTON

T

he killing of Al Qaeda terrorist Osama bin Laden did not fully quench Americans’ desire for revenge. Instead, according to research, US citizens have a stronger desire to take further revenge against those who were responsible for the 9/11 terrorist attacks. As the third anniversary of bin Laden’s death falls May 2, a team of social psychology researchers has questioned whether this instance of vicarious revenge led to feelings of satisfaction and reestablished justice within the American public — including whether bin Laden’s assassination ignited craving for more revenge. Vicarious revenge, where the need for justice is felt not by the victims, but by people in the same group, has been shown to feel similar to personal revenge. Mario Gollwitzer of Philipps University of Marburg developed two studies designed to test the notion

Laden’s death…” The data suggest that those Americans who believed that bin Laden’s assassination sent a message to the perpetrators (“Don’t mess with us”) were also the ones who thought that his death balanced the scales of justice. The second important finding from the study is that bin Laden’s death did not fully quench Osama bin Laden was killed in 2011 Americans’ desire for revenge. “Although justice might be Though justice may achieved, the avengers might not be achieved, avengers feel psychological closure,” the researchers maintained. might not feel The third important finding psychological closure showed that Americans were more satisfied with fact that bin Laden “that Americans’ vengeful desires in was killed intentionally than the the aftermath of 9/11 predicted a possibility of bin Laden being killed sense of justice achieved after bin accidentally.

WASHINGTON: As severe storms swept across South and Central America, at least 35 people were left dead and tens of thousands remained without power even as forecasters downgraded the threat to the eastern half of US. Some storm risks remain, including the possibility of large hail, damaging winds and flash flooding in portions of the South and East Coast, National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Centre said on April 29 night. Mississippi and Alabama — where tornadoes on April 29 caused widespread destruction and several deaths-were again in the bull’s-eye for the worst of the forecast on April

30 evening, CNN reported. A number of tornado warnings expired on April 29 night in North Carolina, where forecasters say the storm was barrelling north. Tens of thousands were without power in the South, where suspected tornadoes tore through homes and businesses late on April 28. At least 17 people were killed in Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee on April 28. Those deaths are in addition to 18 others reported in Arkansas, Oklahoma and Iowa from storms on April 28. Search and rescue efforts were still under way in Louisville, Mississippi, according to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.

US court dismisses 1984 riots case against Congress NEW YORK: A US court has dismissed a lawsuit against India’s Congress party relating to the November 1984 anti-Sikh violence, saying it did not sufficiently “touch and concern” the US court to exercise jurisdiction. However, even as he dismissed the case filed by the US based rights group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), Judge Robert W. Sweet of US District Court here ruled that corporate entities like the Congress party of India can be sued under Alien Torts Statute (ATS). On the issue of corporate liability, Sweet citing the case of Balintulo V. Daimler AG ruled that “Daimler seems to concretely establish that a corporate defendant can be liable

under the ATS, assuming that the statute’s “touch and concern’ requirements are adequately alleged”. “Accordingly, the fact that defendants are incorporated does not, in and of itself, relieve them of liability under the statute or remove this court’s jurisdiction over plaintiffs’ allegations,” Sweet said in his April 24 ruling. However, “plaintiffs’ combined facts, even if credited, are insufficient to establish that the conduct sufficiently ‘touched and concerned’ the US to establish jurisdiction under the ATS and dismissal is appropriate under 12(b)( 1),” he ruled. SFJ said it will challenge the verdict before the US Court of Appeals within 30 days.

Indian man charged with groping woman on flight to US WASHINGTON : An Indian-origin man has been charged with simple assault for allegedly groping a sleeping fellow female passenger for about five minutes on a flight from London to San Francisco. Vinay Pochampally molested the victim by placing his hand down the woman’s shirt two hours into British Airways Flight 285 last on April 28, according to a US District Court criminal complaint cited by the

Smoking Gun. It is unclear whether Pochampally is a US citizen, nor do court records identify his lawyer, the investigative news site said. The female passenger was seated in row 37, behind which was a “bulkhead of the galley and restroom area”. During the flight, Pochampally, who was assigned a seat in row 36 of the Boeing 747, “positioned himself in the gap behind row 37 and in front of the bulkhead”.

As senior counsel Anil Divan urged the court that even these eight names should be disclosed, Justice Dattu said that he along with Justice Desai and Justice Lokur will deliberate on the matter and take a call on this issue. Taking the court through the Indo-Germany Double Taxation Avoidance Convention and the Reciprocity Agreement, Solicitor General Prasaran said India could get these names after a lot of effort and was under an obligation to maintain confidentiality. He said that under the agreement such an information can only be disclosed to persons and

Hawala link: Cong, BJP trade charges NEW DELHI: The Congress on April 28 sought to know about the links BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi had with an alleged “hawala kingpin” whose house and office in Surat were searched by the Enforcement Directorate last month. Hitting back, close Modi aide Amit Shah released a photo of Congress MP Mohammad Azharuddin with the same man.

Gujarat chief minister’s office “reflect a proximate relationship that needs to be examined and investigated”. The Congress’s latest allegations come in the wake of Modi claiming earlier in one of his rallies that Hasan Ali, a Pune-based businessman accused of laundering black money, had been “saved” by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi. Surjewala said the hawala racket

ED raided the house and office of the said “kingpin”, reportedly a diamond trader, and claimed to have unearthed a hawala racket Congress party spokesman Randeep Surjewala alleged that the “hawala kingpin” was a “well-known BJP supporter and protege of Shri Narendra Modi”. The ED March 22 raided the house and office of the said “kingpin”, reportedly a diamond trader by profession, and claimed to have unearthed a hawala racket worth approximately `7 billion. “What is the nature of relationship of Shri Narendra Modi with alleged hawala kingpin,” asked Surjewala, wanting to know if pictures of the diamond trader on Modi’s and BJP’s website holding meetings in the

being run by the “kingpin” had “deep underworld links”. “Does the complete complacency of Narendra Modi and his government to one of the biggest hawala rackets being run in Surat under their nose and eyes point towards their complicity or indifference in upholding the law and checking nefarious elements involved in anti-national activities,” he asked. In response, Shah shared pictures of the “kingpin” with Azharuddin, the sitting MP from Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad, on Twitter. “...will Congress answer what’s there (sic) connection with Him?” Shah tweeted.

SC suspends execution NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on April 28 stayed the execution of December 2000 Red Fort terror shootout convict Mohamed Arif’s death sentence on a plea that he has already undergone life sentence of nearly 14 years and could not be punished twice and referred the matter to a constitution bench. Counsel Tripurari Ray, appearing for Arif, said that carrying out the death sentence of Arif after he has already completed 13 years, four month imprisonment would be violative of article 20 (1) of the constitution. Counsel Ray told the court that under the provision, a convict could not be subjected to a punishment that is greater than which might have been inflicted under the law in force at the time of the commission of the offense. Referring the matter, a bench of Chief Justice R.M. Lodha, Justice Madan B. Lokur and Justice Kurian Joseph said that matter be heard early. As Chief Justice Lodha said that by an earlier pronouncement of the apex court, the law on delay in execution has already been laid, Ray told the court that Arif has not filed any mercy petition.

he Delhi High Court on April 30 fixed May 13 for hearing a plea for a CBI probe into licences granted to real estate developers in Haryana, including one allegedly associated with Congress chief Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law Robert Vadra. A division bench of Chief Justice G. Rohini and Justice R.S. Endlaw posted the matter for May 13 after advocate M.L. Sharma requested the court to hear his public interest litigation (PIL) after the Lok Sabha elections as any move now will favour either the Congress or the Bharatiya Janata Party. M.L. Sharma moved to the court, saying several licenses were issued to developers and builders for turning 21,366 acres of agricultural land into colonies without complying with the statutory rules. The decision caused “serious financial loss of `3900 billion” to the exchequer, Sharma alleged. He contended in the plea that allocation of licences for developing colonies was contrary to provisions of the Haryana Development and Regulation of Urban Areas Act, 1975. It sought Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) Shashi Kant Sharma’s letter of June 3, 2013, be quashed. The letter allegedly sought to roll back the

audit and inquiry into the grant of licence to Skylight Hospitality Pvt. Ltd., that is said to be associated with Vadra. The plea said the inquiry was ordered by Shashi Kant Sharma’s predecessor Vinod Rai. M.L. Sharma claimed that the department of town and country planning (DTCP) issued hundreds of licences for over 21,000 acres of land spread over Gurgaon city and other parts of the state from 2005 to 2012. “Issuing colony licences by the DTCP in Haryana in the name of an individual who is not the owner of a land, is not only illegal but also clear case of corruption within the provision of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1988,” the plea said.

hermostability, an innovative technological intervention, can help achieve 95 percent coverage of expanded programme of immunization in India and would merit 70-80 million doses annually, said Hilleman Laboratories, a joint-venture between

Merck & Co. and Wellcome Trust. The announcement has come when World immunization week is being observed April 24-30. US-based Merck & Co is a research-driven pharmaceutical organization and Wellcome Trust

is a global charitable foundation dedicated to human and animal health. Thermo-stable properties enable vaccines to withstand tough temperature conditions of countries in Asia and Africa. “The solution increases the efficiency of existing vaccines with heat stable, easy-to-use, affordable and novel packaging features,” the company said. “With a quarter of the current birth cohort left unimmunized in the country, India severely lags behind even when compared with lesser developed nations as well as its immediate neighbor,” said Davinder Gill, CEO, Hilleman Laboratories. Of the world’s 22.6 million unimmunized children, India is home to the largest chunk of 6.9 million, the statement noted. Despite being the largest producer of vaccines in the world, around two million Indians died of vaccine preventable diseases in 2012.

B

JP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on April 29 appealed to voters to ensure his party’s victory in 300 Lok Sabha constituencies, but his use of Kargil hero Vikram Batra’s oft-quoted phrase “Yeh dil maange more” sparked a controversy with Batra’s parents raising objections. The Bharatiya Janata Party defended Modi saying the martyr’s quote was not the family’s property, but the Congress attacked the BJP for insulting the war hero. Modi, at his first election rally in Palampur in Kangra district, the home town of Captain Batra, said: “When we take the name of Maj. Somnath Sharma (the first recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, awarded posthumously for his bravery in the November 1947

Kashmir operations) and Vikram Batra, we feel proud. Our mind says — ‘yeh dil maange more’.” He used the phrase several times during his rallies in Himachal Pradesh to stir up the sentiments of the people of the hill state, where a large chunk of population comprises serving as well as retired servicemen. Using the slogan, Modi urged the people to ensure that BJP gets 300 seats. “I ask you to make the lotus win with 300 seats because ‘Yeh dil maange more’ just like Vikram Batra, who gave his life for the country in the Kargil war,” Modi said in Mandi later, donning a traditional Himachali cap. Batra was awarded the Param Vir Chakra posthumously for his bravery in the Kargil war. He used ‘yeh dil maange more’ as a battle slogan, which became widely pop-

Indian Australians favor change of government in India SYDNEY: Corruption and poor leadership were cited as the main reasons for Indians in Australia seeking a change in government back home, according to an online poll conducted by a media group here. More than two-thirds of the respondents predicted a resounding defeat for the incumbent Congress party and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) likely to be swept to power in the 2014 Indian elections. A survey conducted by Indian Link media group has revealed overwhelming support for the BJP in Australia’s Indian community, as opposed to the Congress party that has been in power for 10 years. A whopping 73 percent of the respondents in Indian Link’s poll said they backed the BJP. The fledgling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) snared a surprising 16 percent of the Australian-Indian vote, while the Congress Party managed only a poor six percent.

A sizable number of respondents of the Indian Link survey (55 percent), were long-term residents of Australia. They do genuinely want to be able to have a say in the elections; an overwhelming 82 percent of the respondents claimed they would like a chance to be able to vote. Corruption and poor leadership, it was revealed in comments, are leading India astray, and the desire for change is clear from the strong endorsement of the Narendra Modiled BJP. Indian Link is Australia’s leading community media organization with a fortnightly newspaper in Sydney and monthly in Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth and a 24/7 radio station. India is currently voting in its 16th general elections, a process that stretches to an entire month, given that 814 million people will be exercising their democratic right to elect a new parliament.

Have highest respect for Batra, parents: Modi NEW DELHI: BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi said he had the highest respect for Kargil hero Vikram Batra and his parents and would rather quit politics than dishonor or hurt them. He was defending his use of Batra’s oft-quoted phrase “Yeh dil maange more” to appeal for 300 Lok Sabha seats at a rally in Himachal Pradesh’s Palampur, the hometown of Captain Batra. Addressing a 3D rally using holographic technique, Modi said: “I talked about Vikram Batra with due respect but later I got to know that my political adversaries made an

issue out of it. I was very upset.” “Vikram Batra is the son of India and he became a martyr for us. I salute him and his parents. I can never dishonor our martyrs or hurt their families. I would rather quit politics. I was very saddened to hear about this unnecessary controversy,” he said. The Bharatiya Janata Party defended Modi saying the martyr’s quote was not the family’s property, but the Congress attacked him for insulting the war hero, while use of the slogan was disapproved of by Batra’s parents, who said their son’s sacrifice should not be politicized.

ular. Modi’s use of the slogan was disapproved of by the martyr’s family, who said their son’s sacrifice should not be politicized. Batra’s septuagenarian father G.L. Batra, whose wife Kamal Kant is in the fray for the first time as an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate from Hamirpur seat, took strong offense to the use of “Yeh dil maange more” slogan for soliciting votes. “The BJP is just trying to take credit in politics at this point in time by politically using the slogan of a martyr,” Batra told IANS over phone from Palampur. Challenging Modi, he said: “If he is so indebted to the martyrs, he must withdraw his party’s candidate against my wife.”

n an all-out attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi accused her of joining hands with Finance Minister P. Chidambaram to save the Saradha scamsters and ruining the state by vote bank politics.

Addressing an election rally in this town of Hooghly district, Modi raised the issue of the multicrore rupee Saradha scam, promising “no one will be spared” if he came to power at the centre and specifically raising questions about who bought one of Banerjee’s paintings for `18 million. “Chidambaramji, you are the country’s finance minister, such a

big scam has taken place, who are you trying to save? Why have Mamataji and Chidambaram joined hands to help those responsible for the Saradha scam, people of Bengal want to know,” he said. Attacking Banerjee, Modi raised questions about one of her paintings being sold for `18 million. “You are a good painter. I have heard earlier your paintings used to be sold for `400,000, `800,000, `1500,000. But what is the reason behind your painting once being sold for `18 million.” Dripping sarcasm, Modi said the country is proud to have such a painter, but questioned who purchased the painting. “How many paintings did he buy? Who all have bought your paintings?” Responding to Modi’s attack, Trinamool national spokesperson Derek O’Brien called Modi the “butcher of Gujarat” and accused him of making personal attacks as he “has no answers to Bengal’s development model”. He said Modi should either prove his allegation or face defamation charges.

7th phase: Millions vote in India Narendra Modi runs into trouble with Election Commission after flashing a badge of the BJP’s election symbol during a press conference IANS, NEW DELHI

raving the heat, millions voted in 89 Lok Sabha constituencies on April 30, including Sonia Gandhi's Rae Bareli, even as BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi ran foul of the Election Commission for flashing his party symbol near a polling booth. An estimated 45 percent of the 139 million electorate had voted by afternoon in seven states and two union territories, the exception being Jammu and Kashmir's summer capital Srinagar where polling was low amid a boycott call by separatists. There was no incident of violence in any place including the Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh which also voted for a legislature which would be part of the proposed state.

A total of 1,295 candidates are in the fray in the 89 Lok Sabha constituencies spread across Gujarat (26), Andhra Pradesh (17), Uttar Pradesh (14), Punjab (13), West Bengal (9), Bihar (7) and Jammu and

Amid protests by the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Election Commission ordered the Gujarat authorities to file a first information report (FIR) against Narendra Modi Kashmir, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu (one each). Among the constituencies that saw brisk polling are Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh and Gandhinagar in Gujarat from where Congress president Sonia

Gandhi and BJP patriarch L.K. Advani are contesting respectively. After casting his vote in Gandhinagar, Modi flew to Bihar where he addressed a huge rally in Ujiyarpur Lok Sabha constituency calling for "a strong government in the country". But before that, Modi ran into trouble with the Election Commission after he flashed a badge of the BJP's election symbol "lotus" while addressing a press conference in Gandhinagar. Amid protests by the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Election Commission ordered the Gujarat authorities to file a first information report (FIR) against Modi and the electronic media that showed him flashing the "lotus" near the polling booth — in violation of election laws. All 26 Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat and all 13 in Punjab voted Thursday, taking to 21 where the election process has ended.

Is Congress banking on Third Front to keep out BJP? ABHIMANYU KUMAR SINGH, NEW DELHI

T

he Congress is increasingly coming around to the view that it is unlikely to win the 16th general election on its own and that it may have to work with a Third Front to stop the BJP from coming to power. At least four Congress leaders have already hinted that allying with the Third Front, or a coalition of parties not allied to either the United Progressive Alliance or Democratic the National Alliance, is a possibility for the party in order to stop the BJP from coming to power. The latest to do so is Ahmed Patel, Congress president Sonia Gandhi's closest aide, who told a leading national daily that the party was willing to consider the possibility of working with a Third Front. Others like Prithvi-

A Third Front government cannot come to power without support from the Congress

raj Chavan, Salman Khurshid and Jairam Ramesh have already spoken of this option. While not all Congress leaders are willing to say so in public yet, in private the view has been doing the rounds for at least a couple of months. At a lunch he hosted for

journalists in the capital some time earlier this year, a union minister from the south was categorical in stating that the party would not come to power on its own this time. Another union minister averred that the party was set to lose the

elections but may still continue to be in power. "We are not going to win this time. But you may still see another UPA government at the centre," he said. A union minister in the outgoing UPA-2 government said allying with the Third Front was a

distinct possibility for the Congress as it was unlikely to get a majority on its own. "We are keeping our options open and will take a call on allying with the Third Front once the results are out," the minister told IANS, on condition of anonymity. Aware of the situation, the Left, which has played a part in forming a Third Front government at the centre each time in the past, is working towards the formation of another such government without making much noise about it. Admitting that a Third Front government cannot come to power without support from the Congress, the Communist Party of IndiaMarxist (CPI-M) is actively working towards the victory of candidates belonging to non-National Democratic Alliance (NDA), non-United Progressive Alliance (UPA) coalitions, a CPI-M source told IANS.

Varanasi battle to save the country:

Arvind Kejriwal The AAP leader says his fight against Narendra Modi is aimed at saving the nation from corruption GAURAV SHARMA, VARANASI

A

AP chief Arvind Kejriwal said that his fight against BJP prime ministerial nominee Narendra Modi is not a “battle of prestige” but one to save the country from corrupt forces. Kejriwal said the party’s electoral win in Varanasi and Amethi would be “enough to shake up the country” even if the rookie party does not win 100 seats in the Lok Sabha poll. “Modiji brought me to Varanasi. And this is not a battle of prestige, but one to save the country from corrupt forces like the BJP and the

Congress,” Kejriwal told IANS after his hectic and back-breaking campaigning in the temple town. In Amethi, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has fielded Kumar Vishwas against Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi. Asked whether it was purely out of electoral reasons that he decided to contest in Varanasi, Delhi’s former chief minister Kejriwal said: “It is not so... Wherever the Aam Aadmi Party enters once, it maintains an everlasting tie with that place and its people.” “We have come to Varanasi and we will never leave it,” he adds. 12, the last phase of nine-phase polls. The contest between the Gujarat chief minister and Kejriwal is the most keenly-watched contest, in which the former seems to have the upper hand. Both the leaders filed their nomination papers accompanied by large numbers of supporters and their cavalcades. Modi’s road show — a day after Kejriwal’s — was joined by thousands, sending out a strong signal of his popularity. Besides Modi, Congress’ Ajay Rai is another contender. Asked about the number of seats AAP was hoping to muster in the

house of 543, Kejriwal said: “We will get what people will give. I am not worried about the results. “Imagine you seeing news on TV and coming to know that both Modiji and Rahul Gandhiji got defeated. “The Congress will be destroyed and BJP will cease to exist,” he added. As to why the over a-year-old party did not wait for the 2019 general election, Kejriwal answered: “Had we waited till 2019, the country would not have been there,” he said. Perhaps, the biggest challenge for Kejriwal is to justify his resignation from Delhi’s chief minister-

ship to the voters of Varanasi. “You have only one point against me that I resigned from the post of Delhi chief minister. But I did no corruption whereas Modiji is the agent of Ambani. “All I have to do is to convince people, and they are getting convinced,” Kejriwal told IANS. “The comparison is between the one who resigned, and the one who is looting the country,” he said. After running the Delhi government for 49 days, Kejriwal and his cabinet quit the government over the defeat of the anti-graft Jan Lokpal bill by the BJP and the Congress in the assembly.

These expressions are unlikely to be forgotten in a hurry. BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi is way ahead in hitting out against his adversaries. Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi has also framed new epithets but these appear to be few and far between. Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal has thrown up a few to enhance his image as an anti-corruption crusader. This is perhaps the first Lok Sabha election where tea sellers have hogged some limelight due to Modi’s references to his origins as a tea-seller. The Bharatiya Janata Party has sought to capitalize on Modi’s humble origins by

North Korea plays nuke card again Threatens a ‘new form of nuke test’ following Obama’s Asia tour IANS , PYONGYANG

orth Korea on April 29 threatened to carry out “a new form of nuclear test” in response to US President Barack Obama’s Asia tour. “The DPRK (North Korea) will advance along the road of bolstering up nuclear deterrent, unhindered, now that the US brings the dark clouds of a nuclear war to hang over the DPRK,” Xinhua quoted a spokesperson of the North Korean foreign ministry as saying in a statement. “There is no statute of limitations to the DPRK’s declaration that it will not rule out a new form of nuclear test clarified by it in the March 30 statement. This is the exercise of the inviolable right to self-defense,” the statement said. The statement decribed Obama’s four-nation Asian tour as a dangerous one as “it was aimed to bring dark clouds of more acute confrontation and nuclear arms race to Asia”. The statement said Obama’s unwillingness to open talks with North Korea is tantamount to a declaration before the world that “the

Manila inks military pact with US MANILA: The US and the Philippines signed an agreement on April 28 which will allow a larger presence of American troops in the military bases of the Asian nation. The agreement was signed a few hours after US President Barack Obama arrived in Manila on the last leg of his Asian tour. The Enhanced Defense Co-operation Agreement (EDCA) was signed by Philippines Defence Minister Voltaire Gazmin and US ambassador to the Philippines, Philip Goldberg.

US hostile policy toward the DPRK remains unchanged, the US tries to bring down the DPRK by force and it began to carry out such scenario”. “His reckless acts only escalated the danger of confrontation and conflict in the Asia-Pacific region and gave further momentum to the opposition to him,” it warned. “What remains to be done by the Obama group is to watch what kind of seeds of fire sown by him this time would develop into flames that may affect the US,” the statement warned.

Korean president apologizes for ferry disaster SEOUL: South Korean President Park Geun-hye made an official apology for the ferry sinking disaster on April 29. The apology came 13 days after the passenger ship Sewol capsized off the country’s southwestern coast April 16, killing over 180 people, most of them high school students who were on a field trip. More than 110 others still missing, Xinhua reported. Park said during a cabinet meeting that she was “sorry to the people and heavy hearted that many precious lives were lost”. It was her fifth official apology to the people since she took office in February last year, which came just two weeks after she apologized for evidence fabrication incident linked to spy agents. There were 476 people on board the Sewol, with many trapped inside as the ferry listed and sank within two hours of distress signals being sent. A total of 174 passengers were rescued. The government came under fierce criticism over the disaster, and its ineffective handing of the rescue operation, which began over two hours after the first distress calls went.

Pro-Russia activists storm Ukrainian buildings KIEV: Pro-Russia activists stormed several official buildings in the eastern Ukrainian city of Luhansk on April 29, seizing the regional government’s headquarters and prosecutor’s office before opening fire at the main police station, BBC reported. Ukraine’s Interim President Olexander Turchynov criticized local police for their “inaction” and “criminal treachery”. The US accused Russia of seeking to “change the security landscape” of Eastern and Central Europe. US Secretary of State John Kerry , in a speech at the Atlantic Council in Washington, told Kremlin to “leave Ukraine in peace” and warned: “Nato territory is inviolable we will defend every single inch of it.”

New diabetes, obesity drug: promising research by NRI ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

T

wo researchers at Indiana University, including an Indian-American, are leading the way towards developing a new potential non-insulin drug for diabetes and obesity, which needs to be taken only once a week. Dr. Arnab De, who has a PhD from Columbia University, and Prof. Richard DiMarchi of Indiana University have worked on developing a pro-drug or an inactive substance that is converted to a drug within the body, to stabilize a sugar reducing peptide hormone called GLP1.

Indiana University Research and Technology Corporation (IURTC) have applied for international patents for these pro-drugs and they are currently being licensed to leading biotech/pharmaceutical companies for optimization, De told IANS. But it may take five years or so before the new drug hits the market after optimization and clinical trials, said De. Talking about his research, De said: “Patients often have to take an insulin injection after every meal. An overdose of insulin may drastically reduce blood glucose leading to life-threatening diabetic coma. Hence we wanted to develop a non-insulin drug, which would hopefully act for a prolonged period of time so that patients do not need to take it every day,” he said. De said they looked at a peptide hormone called GLP1, which reduces blood sugar and obesity without any risk of coma.

Vegas, according to court documents. Soon after Chahal posted his $1-million bail and hired former federal prosecutor James Lassart as his attorney, his girlfriend stopped cooperating with the investigation and refused to testify against him, the Post said. During a preliminary hearing, Lassart did not deny that Chahal repeatedly struck his girlfriend, but insisted the physical damage was overblown. In a crippling blow to the prosecution, San Francisco Superior Court Judge Brendan Conroy ruled that the surveillance video could not be used as evidence because police seized it illegally from Chahal’s apartment, the Post said. The prosecution argued it likely would have been erased if police had waited for a warrant. Once named one of America’s “most eligible bachelors” by ExtraTV, Chahal sold his first online-ad network, ClickAgents.com to ValueClick when he was 16. Later, he sold BlueLithium to Yahoo for `18,100 million. In 2009, he authored a book The Dream: How I Learned the Risks and Rewards of Entrepreneurship and Made Millions.

Google+ chief Vic Gundotra departs after eight years ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

M

umbai-born IIT Madras alum Vic Gundotra, the mastermind behind Google’s social network Google+, has abruptly resigned putting a question mark on the future of his creation. Making the announcement via a posting on his own Google+ page last week, Gundotra, 45, said he was proud of his eight year

Vic Gundotra

His departure follows a rumor posted two days ago on the app Secret that, “Vic Gundotra is interviewing,” according to technology site CNet. Citing a person familiar with the matter, it said that Gundotra had problems with Google’s management team.

I am excited about what’s next. But this isn’t the day to talk about that. This is a day to celebrate the past eight years tenure with the online search giant, but felt that now was the time to look ahead. However, he didn’t say much about his future plans. “I am excited about what’s next. But this isn’t the day to talk about that. This is a day to celebrate the past 8 years,” wrote Gundotra, who was Senior Vice President, Social for Google in a post titled, “And Then.” “I’m also forever in debt to the Google+ team. This is a group of people who built social at Google against the scepticism of so many.”

CEO Larry Page praised Gundotra in his own Google+ post, thanking him for “a tremendous almost eight years at Google” and for building Google+ “from nothing.” In addition to spearheading the development of Google+, Page congratulated Gundotra for his work on guiding the teams that introduced turn-by-turn navigation to Google Maps, and improving Google’s developer relations, which Page described as “disparate efforts” before Gundotra fixed them. However, his tenure was also a rocky one, according to CNET.

INDIAN AMERICAN DOCS DOMINATE MEDICARE PAY LIST BY A STAFF WRITER

D

ata released recently by the US Department of Health and Human Services indicates that 344 doctors nationwide received more than $3 million each in 2012 from Medicare. Overall, about two per cent of clinicians accounted for one-fourth of all Medicare payments. Indian American and other South Asian doctors are a significant presence among the US physician community, so it was no surprise that they appeared prominently on the Medicare payout list. The 12th highest payment to an individual physician nationally by Medicare in 2012 went to Dr. Vikas Malhotra, an Indian American hematology and oncology specialist in Spring Hill, Fla. He billed Medicare $27,288,429 for 520,461 services to 1,783 beneficiaries and received $8,419,117 in payments. In 14th place on the list was Dr. Bilal Ansari, who received his medical degree from Dow Medical College in Pakistan. He billed $25,062,194 for 486,329 services to 1,115 beneficiaries and was paid $7,873,711. Other Indian or South Asian American doctors receiving more that $4.7 million in

Tobacco dealers fined for improper signages

EW YORK -- New York City’s 9,000 cigarette dealers seem to be choking on a ticket blitz. There’s reportedly been a 70-fold increase in the number of tickets written up by the Department of Consumer Affairs. The fines can run as high as $1,000 for not having the proper signs posted to warn about the dangers of smoking. The department is believed to have issued 2,229 signage violations in 2013, compared to 628 in 2012 and just 32 in 2011. This year, that number is down as businesses get on board with the new rules. Less than 300 tickets have been issued so far in 2014.

Medicare payments in 2012 included: Kamal Patel, hematology/oncology, Little Rock, Ark., $7,274,248; Sunil Gupta, ophthalmology, Pensacola, Fla., $6,744,079; Ravi Patel, hematology/ oncology, Bakersfield, Calif., $5,505,883; Rakesh Jagetia, radiation/oncology, Glenview, Ill., $5,248,067; Nauman Chaudhry, ophthalmology, Hamden, Conn., $5,037,305; Manish Dhawan, hematology/ oncology, Shreveport, La., $5,002,022; Avtar Ghuman, ophthalmology, Ft. Myers, Fla., $4,882,471; and Shaker R. Dakhil, internal medicine, Wichita, Kan. Malhotra, a former University of Missouri professor who has been practicing

in Florida since 2003, told the Tampa Bay Times that most of the money his office gets from Medicare pays for drugs, lab tests and other expenses. Payments to oncologists typically include the cost of medications, which are purchased by the practice. “That doesn’t represent the income of the physician,” he told the newspaper. Dr. Saadia Chohan of Oklahoma City, who was second on Oklahoma’s list of the highest paid by Medicare in that state at $3.4 million, pointed out to the Tulsa World that most physicians are not taking in millions of dollars because some of their patients are receiving expensive patented drugs, such as a new prostate cancer vaccine that costs nearly $100,000 per patient. “Most of these drugs are pass-through for us in Medicare. We make, if anything, our cost,” she said, adding, “Medicare reimburses us 80 per cent of the cost of the drug.” Cardiologist Dr. Ashish Pal of Davenport, Fla., a graduate of the University of Delhi, received about $4.5 million from Medicare. According to him, his billing was appropriate, although he acknowledged it was high because he has multiple cardiology-

related specialties, and because he works in an outpatient setting and bills the government for facility fees. However, another case shows that following the money can turn up potential problems. Detroit-area cancer doctor Farid Fata, originally from Lebanon, among the top recipients of Medicare payments, currently awaiting trial on federal charges he intentionally misdiagnosed patients and ordered unnecessary treatments. Fata claims he is innocent in the case. AP chose a threshold of $3 million in payments for its analysis of individual doctors because that was the figure used by HHS inspector general in an audit last year. The report recommended that Medicare probe billings above a set level that has not been disclosed by the federal government. Topping Medicare’s list of highest paid physicians in the US was Florida ophthalmologist Salomon Melgen, whose relationship with Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., made headlines in 2013 after news broke that the lawmaker used the doctor’s personal jet for trips to the Dominican Republic. Medicare paid Melgen $20.8 million.

He has also said that he will host the premiere of all the films that he associates himself with in future, in Indore. ‘We need not make violence sexy’ NEW DELHI: Violence in the mainstream cinema is depicted in such a manner that it looks sexy to children, so does the misrepresentation of “macho” heroism, said social activist and noted dancer Mallika Sarabhai. Sarabhai has been addressing social issues using the medium of dance and theatre, and speaking at a conference here on “Arts and Media: Problem or Solution”, the 59year-old said films like Dabangg are affecting the psychology of children. “We need not make violence sexy through our films. Samrat & Co. and Subhash Ghai’s Kaanchi haven’t struck the right chord yet. Based on a bestseller by author Chetan Bhagat, it is directed by first-timer Abhishek Varman. “2 States is still leading. Among the new releases, ‘Revolver Rani’ is doing the best. It has minted approximately `32.5 million in two days. Kaanchi has collected about

Though Kangana Ranaut-starrer Revolver Rani has done relatively better than the other two films that released April 25, the movie’s performance at the box-office is not as good as her previous film Queen. “Even the songs are not good and promotions didn’t create much hype,” said Thadani.

Playing Leela was huge responsibility: Deepika NEW DELHI : Actress Deepika Padukone, who featured in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 2013 hit film Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, says essaying the role of Leela was a big responsibility for her. So, playing Leela was a huge responsibility for me.”

ail the female. Kangna Ranaut plays the quirky queen of all she surveys. She lords over her doomed anarchic and wretched kingdom like a doped and excitable Pan Singh Tomar. It is a dangerous world out there in the Indian heartland. Specially for women who have to fight prejudices and betrayals on so many levels. In a scene straight out of a street play, Kangna, playing what seems like a cross between Uma Thurman in Kill Bill and Seema Biswas in Bandit Queen, Kangna tells the mother of a young girl: “Teach her how to shoot a gun. It’s the only way she can survive.” Revolver Rani is a deeply satisfying tribute to many things at the same time. Director Sai Kabir

As she goes through a sham marriage and a very real pregnancy with the certifiable asshole, Kangna’s character’s blind love turns into frustration and fury in front of our eyes. Book Pawan Kalyan for remarks against TRS chief, says court HYDERABAD: A court in Andhra Pradesh’s Telangana on April 28 directed police to book Telugu film actor Pawan Kalyan TRS chief Rao for making some offensive remarks against Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) chief K. Pawan Kalyan, who recently floated Jana Sena and is backing the Bharatiya Janata Party-Telugu Desam Party alliance, had made the remarks while addressing an election rally in Nizamabad last week. The actor and the TRS chief have been attacking each other during the campaigning in Telangana. The war of words hot up Saturday when the actor, who hails from Seemandhra, threatened to skin the TRS leader alive if he continues to criticize BJP ‘s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. BHOOMI POOJA FOR HANUMAN SPIRITUAL AND COMMUNITY CENTER BY A STAFF WRITER

lenview (IL) -- It was a dream come true for many devotees of Hanumanji in Glenview and surrounding suburbs of Chicagoland with Hanuman Mandir Spiritual and Community Center formally conducting a Bhumi Pooja on April 26 for establishing a Hanuman Temple along with a facility for community and spiritual activities for people of all ages. The Center headed by Dr. Chandra Khurana and a group of Indian Americans diligently searched the north side of Chicago for a site to build the temple and community center and finally found a 4.1acre land in Glenview where they decided to construct a 37,200 square-foot, twostory building at 3623 West Lake Avenue, Glenview, IL. The plan has received the blessings of the Village trustees. The memorable moment marked the beginning of a realization of a noble and long-cherished dream of the Indian community residing in the northern suburbs of Chicago. In view of the growing number of the Indian population and their spiritual needs, it was long felt to have a facility that could serve as the source to provide support for the fast aging people. This project will include a Hanuman Mandir and a community center. This will serve the long standing desire of the community to have a multi-faceted public place to celebrate various cultural, spiritual and educational programs. The

Village of Glenview President James Patterson, Congressman Robert Dold, Dr. Chandra Khurana and many devotees were present when Priest Nagendra Rao from Sri Bala Ji Mandir performed the ground-breaking ceremony for Hanuman Mandir of Greater Chicago.

Center will benefit the members of all the communities and will offer a very broadbased opportunity for social interaction. The Village of Glenview has granted the approval for the construction of this holy project which is expected to be completed in about a year. The Mandir would have two distinct areas, which are, performance of spiritual activities; and organizing various cultural community programs. The devotees of Hanuman Spiritual and Community Center, now popularly known as Hanuman Mandir of Greater

Bloomington to have Hindu temple BY A STAFF WRITER

LOOMINGTON (IL) -Hindu Temple of BloomingtonNormal in Illinois, which held a three-day grand opening ceremony last week, is likely to open its doors to the public in June next. The opening ceremonies included poojas, homams, aarathis, jaladhivasm rakshabandhans, mantra chanting, lectures, 108 kalasa abhishekam, etc. The Mission of this temple--the idea of which was floated some 36 years ago-is “to meet the religious, spiritual and cultural needs of the Hindu community” and “to facilitate worship, education, social services and seva”. Meanwhile, Hindu statesman Rajan Zed has applauded efforts of Temple leaders and the area community to realize this Hindu temple complex. Rajan Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, said in a statement that it was important to

pass on Hindu spirituality, concepts and traditions to the coming generations amid so many distractions in the consumerist society and hoped that this temple complex would focus in this direction. Zed stressed that instead of running after materialism, one should focus on inner search and realization of Self and work towards achieving moksh (liberation), which, he said, was the goal

of Hinduism. Besides a sanctuary with 11 deities, this Temple will also have several classrooms, library, stage for cultural performances and lectures and a dining hall. Area Hindus, numbering around 7,000, have hitherto been traveling to Peoria or Chicago for temple worship. Rammohan Mundlapudi, Suresh Krishna, Sridhar Kantamneni and Chetan Desai are president, president-elect, secretary and treasurer, respectively. Bloomington, founded in 1831 and claimed to be “located in one of the most productive agricultural areas in the nation”, is known for Beer Nuts, oldest continuously performed Passion Play in USA and Shakespeare Festival. Tari Renner and David Hales are Mayor and City Manager respectively. Hinduism, oldest and third largest religion of the world, has about one billion adherents. There are about three million Hindus in the US

ings XI Punjab beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by five-wickets as they finished off the United Arab Emirates (UAE) leg of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on a fivematch winning streak here on April 28. At the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, the heroes for Kings XI were the bowlers, who put on a brilliant show to restrict the star-studded Royal Challengers batting to 124/8 in 20 overs. In reply, Kings XI Punjab cruised home to 127 for five with seven balls to spare after Virender Sehwag top scored with 32. David Miller made 26 while Rishi Dhawan remained unbeaten on 23. For Kings XI captain George Bailey, things went in his favor right from winning the toss.

Bangalore to host India-Serbia tie

NEW DELHI, IANS

T

BCCI chief Srinivasan

NEW DELHI: Bangalore will host India’s Davis Cup World Group playoff tie against Serbia Sep 12-14. “In consultation with the captain and players of the team, AITA has decided to hold the next Davis Cup World Group Qualifying tie against Serbia in Bengalore. This tie will be held from 12th to 14th September 2014,” said All India Tennis Association (AITA) secretary general Bharat Oza in a statement on April 28. The winning nation will qualify for the World Group in 2015 while the

cers, one from Chennai police and the other from Delhi Police. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) resisted the probe panel, saying that the allegations against the cricketers and Srinivasan are based on an inquiry conducted by Justice Mudgal himself. So, the investigation into those allegations should be undertaken by a different person. Apparently, unimpressed by the BCCI submission, Justice Patnaik said the court will pass a judicial order and reserved it.

NBA suspend Nene for one game WASHINGTON: The NBA handed Washington Wizards forward Nene a one-game suspension, following a tussle between him and Chicago Bulls’ Jimmy Butler. Nene would miss the fourth game of “Wizards vs Bulls” playoffs series Sunday night, reports Xinhua. Nene tussled with Butler with eight minutes and 28 seconds left in Game 3, and he was ejected right after the incident on April 27 night.

SC reserves order on spot-fixing probe panel he Supreme Court on April 29 reserved its order on setting up a panel to probe allegation of spot-fixing and betting against some of the cricketers playing the Indian Premier League (IPL) and BCCI president N. Srinivasan. The apex court bench headed by Justice A.K. Patnaik reserved the order after it was told here that Justice Mukul Mudgal has consented to head the panel to investigate the allegations against the cricketers and Srinivasan. Senior counsel Gopal Subramaniam at the outset of the hearing told the court that Justice Mudgal, while agreeing to undertake the probe, said he would like to be assisted by former CBI director M.L. losing country will contest in the Zone Groups. India qualified for the playoff when they beat South Korea 3-1 at Busan in second round of Group I Asia/Oceania in the first week of April. The 2013 finalists will travel to India looking to continue their seven-year-long presence in the World Group. Serbia has made the quarter-finals or better every year since 2010. For India, this tie represents a chance to return to the Davis Cup’s top table.

Though the hard-hitting Chris Gayle gave them some scare with a seven-ball 20 but Royal Challengers couldn’t recover from young pacer Sandeep Sharma’s (3/15) triple strikes at top of the order. Sharma struck twice in his first over to get rid of both Gayle and Royal Challengers captain Virat Kohli (4) and then came back in his second to remove Parthiv Patel (2). It was Yuvraj Singh, who then rescued the innings with a valuable 35 but could not take the team to a fighting total. Kings XI fast bowler Mitchell Johnson did well for his two for 19 while Rishi Dhawan got two for 14. While chasing, Sehwag gave Kings XI a brisk start with his 26ball 32. Their star batsmen Glen Maxwell managed just run-a-ball six before becoming Varun Aaron’s second victim.

winner Kiradech Aphibarnrat of Thailand showed he is inching his way back to the winner’s circle, finishing fourth. Trailing one shot behind Smith, Lahiri went out quickly by firing three successive birdies starting from the second hole. He stumbled with a bogey-five on the fifth hole but recovered with another birdie on 12. However, a double-bogey six on 13 after a lengthy three-hour rain delay saw the Indian ride out a tense finish as a host of marquee players were wrestling for the lead. “I had an awkward lie on 13. During the rain delay I was just thinking that I have to get up and down there. I got a bad break there but I know Lin Wen-tang dropped a shot as well,” said Lahiri. “It’s really great to get my first win outside India. I am so glad I managed to do it today,” added Lahiri.

Suarez named PFA player of the year LONDON: Liverpool striker Luis Suarez was named the Professional Footballers Association’s (PFA) ‘player of the year’ for 2013-14, becoming the first non-European to win the award. Suarez was on April 27 night recognized for scoring 30 goals in the Premier League

this season, firing Liverpool to the top of the standings, reports Xinhua. The Uruguayan was presented with the award at a ceremony here after his side’s 0-2 defeat to Chelsea, which means Manchester City can secure the title if they win their three remaining games this season. Chelsea’s Eden Hazard came second in the poll. He won Young Player of the Year. Luis Suarez

What kind of shopper are you? S

There are seven categories of shoppers, each with specific buying habits from the frugal bargain hunter to the high-end fashionista

No price is set in stone for this shopper and they never pay what’s on the ticket without a little haggling first.

IANS, LONDON

hopping can be fun and a challenge for some; tiring and frustrating for others; and for many, it can be filled with bargain pieces or indulgent purchases. A shopper can be differentiated in many ways according to their mindset and choices — which one are you? According to money saving site, NetVoucherCodes.co.uk, there are seven categories of shoppers, each with specific buying habits from the frugal bargain hunter to the highend fashionista, reports femalefirst.co.uk. The team has put together a guide to help you decide which category you fall in: BARGAIN SHOPPER: Bargain shoppers are seldom spotted on the high street unless there are lots of sales on. They never buy unless prices have been slashed to the maximum and if not then they’ll come back a couple of weeks later to check again. THE RESEARCHER: A researcher is never knowingly undersold on price. These shoppers take time to shop around both online and in store until they are convinced they have found the best possible price and best item for their budget. They spend months researching every brand they’re interested in and then visit 16 review websites to make sure they’ve got the best price. THE NEGOTIATOR: No price is set in stone for this shopper and they never pay what’s on the ticket without a little haggling first, regardless of how cheap. Their sole purpose in life is to win the battle with every single sales assistant they encounter. OLD FAITHFUL: The old faithful never dares to leave its natural habitat and buys absolutely everything from the same store. Their Favorite shop’s closure would have the same devastating effect as that of the loss of a close family member. THE RETURNER: They might not think twice about buying when in the shop, but once they get their shopping home two thirds of their purchases come back. Nothing is ever right for this shopper, be it fit, color or style. IMPULSE BUYER: With an impulse buyer the price tag always takes a back seat to desire. This shopper takes one look at a product and purchases it. They don’t actually need what they’re buying, and it might be over priced, but when will they see something this amazing again? HIGH-END FASHIONISTA: No matter what it is, this shopper won’t buy unless it’s designer. They’re willing to pay against the odds for a product just because of the label and like to show off their cash.

Bite into Dark Knight burger NEW DELHI: Imagine biting into a burger with black buns! Here comes the ‘Dark Knight’ burger! For many, burgers are only about patties. But if you get to eat a mouthful of burger made of scrumptious patties and black bun instead of the conventional brown ones, the buns will surely get your undivided attention. The capital’s Dude Food restaurant has made a quirky culinary invention by launching The Dark Knight burger, which has black buns, a special tangy sauce and big size patties. Vegetarians can enjoy the potato wedges and pickled vegetables patty

Fashion for moms-tobe: maxi dresses, tunic tops IANS, LONDON

P

regnant and worried how to put on your best fashion statement with the baby bump? Try some maternity style with tunic tops with leggings and maxi dresses to beat the heat and stay comfortable. Loose-fit clothing definitely brings in the comfort level for all the expectant mothers, especially as they head to the end of their pregnancy. Maxi dresses are a style staple for spring. They’re easy to wear and the loose-fit or stretchy fabric will leave you able to move around easily, reports femalefirst.co.uk. Leggings paired with tunic tops are another look you’ll find yourself wearing time and time again through your spring pregnancy as they are preferable over jeans.

and non-vegetarians can indulge in chicken ones, but with time there will be more options for meat lovers. “Youth mostly goes for black. We thought of giving them what they like. It took us six months to make the burger right,” Sumit Goyal, grand wizard, Light Bulb Moments at Dude Food, told IANS. He didn’t disclose the ingredients used in making the black bun but said that there is not much of a difference in taste if one compares it with the regular ones. “If you close your eyes and eat the black bun, you won’t be able to tell the difference,” he said.
