‘Hillary one email away from jail’

Hillary unveils $350-bn plan for students

A

s Hillary Clinton turned over her private server to Justice Department amid reports it contained ‘top secret’ emails, Bobby Jindal said she is just a single email away from serving prison time. Now that the Democratic frontrunner presidential contender has asserted that she has turned over all of her emails, any breach would mean she has lied in court proceedings, her long shot Republican rival and Louisiana Governor Jindal said. “She’d better pray the Chinese government doesn’t do a document dump,” Jindal said in remarks released by his campaign. Jindal’s remarks came as Clinton relented on August 11 to months of demands to relinquish the personal email server she used while serving as secretary of state. Clinton’s emails have been under

BRIEFS: Pentagon criticized for likening scribes to spies WASHINGTON: The Pentagon is criticized for its new war laws manual that likens war-zone journalists to spies and says that under some circumstances, war-zone journalists can be treated as “unprivileged belligerents”. The 1,176-page manual, initially publicized in June, did not stir up much controversy till August 10 when an editorial by The New York Times called for repeal of certain guidelines which it argued would make the work of war-zone journalists “more dangerous”. Though treating journalists generally as civilians, the Pentagon manual says in some instances journalists should be regarded as “unprivileged belligerents”.

First India-US strategic dialogue next month NEW DELHI: The first India-US Strategic and Commercial Dialogue (SACD) will be held in September in Washington, a senior American administration official said on August 12. “The Strategic and Commercial Dialogue will be taking place in six to seven weeks time,” U.S. Under Secretary of Commerce Stefan Selig told reporters here. “The dialogue will have four pillars — ease of doing business, innovation and entrepreneurship, smart cities project in India and the harmonization of standards to increase bilateral trade,” Selig said.

scrutiny since it was revealed that she used a private server in her home to send and receive messages when she was secretary of state. The FBI has been looking into the security of the private server and investigators have been trying to determine whether Clinton sent or received classified information on an unsecured system.

Meanwhile, Chuck Grassley, the Republican chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee said two of the four classified messages discovered in emails turned over to the State Department by Clinton were labelled “top secret”. Clinton aides have maintained that nothing on her server was classified at the time she saw it.

WASHINGTON: The US Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton has unveiled a $350 billion higher education plan aimed at cutting college tuition and easing debt burdens for college loanees, media reported on August 11. Dubbed the New College Compact, the plan seeks to reduce the cost of four-year public colleges to such an extent that a loan would be unnecessary, and to make two-year community colleges tuition-free. For those already with a student debt, the plan seeks to reduce the interest rates by allowing refinancing at current federal rates. The Clinton camp estimated that about 25 million borrowers would benefit from the plan. Prior to her announcement, Clinton’s two other major primary chal-

lengers, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley, had already proposed their own more radical versions of college affordability plan, including eliminating tuition and fees for public universities. “We can’t expect the federal government just to pay the bill for free. That’s not how America works,” said Clinton at a rally in New Hampshire without publicly criticizing her Democratic rivals.

Emergency declared in Ferguson town after shooting IANS, WASHINGTON

A

state of emergency was declared in a Missouri county as protesters turned violent after police shot and critically injured one man on August 9 — the anniversary of the killing of an unarmed black teenager Michael Brown. “The recent acts of violence will not be tolerated in a community that has worked so tirelessly over the last year to rebuild and become stronger,” St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger said in a statement. Overnight unrest in Ferguson, a small town of 22,000, nearly 70 percent of them black, with all but four of its 53 strong police force white, created “the potential for harm to persons and property”, the

statement said. The order came as roughly 200 demonstrators marched from Christ Church Cathedral to the Thomas F. Eagleton United States Courthouse in St. Louis. The protesters carried signs,

chanted and prayed and demanded the Justice Department take action, according to CNN affiliate KTVI. At the Old Courthouse in downtown St. Louis, protesters hung a banner from two balloons. It read,

Trump still leads Republican field, says poll ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

R

eal estate mogul Donald Trump continues to lead the Republican field in Iowa, the first nominating state, though his dust-up with a TV host in last week’s opening debate cost him some ground, according to a new poll. Former Florida governor and Republican establishment favorite Jeb Bush was also hit hard, according to a new Suffolk University poll. He sank to seventh place from third in the RealClearPolitics average of Iowa polls over the past month. Bush now narrowly trails former CEO Carly Fiorina in the key early state. Florida Senator Marco Rubio

scores the biggest boost, rising from eight to third. While one in five remain undecided in the new Iowa poll, among

those with a preference, Trump leads the field at 17 percent. He is followed by Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker at 12 percent and Rubio at 10 percent. Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson comes fourth at 9 percent and former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina and Texas Senator Ted Cruz tied for fifth at 7 percent each. In New Hampshire, the second nominating state, too Trump is in the lead at 18 percent, according to a Boston Herald/Franklin Pierce University poll. Meanwhile, Trump who is running with a pledge to make America great again told CNN Tuesday that he is “the most fabulous whiner.”

“Racism still lives here #fightback.” Police arrested 56 people at the courthouse demonstration, St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson Schron Jackson told CNN. Later on August 10, another group of protesters blocked part of a highway in Earth City, Missouri. Some of them held yellow signs that said, “Ferguson is everywhere.” The planned acts of civil disobedience on August 10 came after a night of violence that left Ferguson on edge. Peaceful marches in the St. Louis suburb planned by day on August 9 were shattered that same night when gunfire broke out. The alleged gunman, 18-year-old Tyrone Harris of St. Louis, is hospitalized in critical condition and in police custody.

Kerry hopeful of Cong support for Iran n-deal WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State John Kerry has expressed optimism that the Obama administration will garner enough support John Kerry from Congress to implement the Iran nuclear deal. “We’re going be successful on plan A,” Kerry said on August 11 at a discussion in New York when asked what the White House would do if Congress kills the deal. “That’s our policy, and I’m quite confident we’re going to be”, Xinhua reported him as saying.

hina and the U.S. will exchange visits by officials in preparation for the upcoming September visit of President Xi Jinping to U.S., the first state visit by a Chinese president since 2011. Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said on Monday that several senior US officials will visit China in August and September, while officials from China will also visit the US, People’s Daily reported. Niu Jun, a professor of international relations at Peking University, said that apart from finalizing the

Xi Jinping

schedule and ceremonial details of Xi’s visit, the officials are likely to exchange views on cyber-security and the South China Sea. These issues have raised tensions in the months since the visit was officially announced in February. “Reports in the US media accusing China of being the biggest online hacking suspect have made cyber security a top issue in bilateral relations at the moment; and the tone doesn’t seem to have lowered despite the upcoming visit of state leaders,” Niu said. “As for the issue of the South China Sea, the two sides

are still working to find a solution acceptable to both to manage the regional situation,” he added. China-US relations warmed up after US President Barack Obama visited Beijing in November. Agreements on extended business, tourist and student visa policies and carbon emission reduction were some of the major achievements of the meetings. More recently, a controversy has arisen over reports carried by The New York Times in which China was accused of stealing the personal information of millions of Americans by hacking the database of the Office of Personnel Management.

of a man on the special status issue. A Congress activist had immolated self during a protest on August 9 and he died the next day. Activists of the CPI took to

streets since early morning to stage protests at APSRTC depots in all the districts. They tried to prevent buses from coming out, leading to tension and arrests at few places. APSRTC employees in some districts in coastal Andhra joined the strike, resulting in suspension of bus services. Buses were off the roads in many parts East Godavari, West Godavari, Visakhapatnam, Prakasam, Krishna, Guntur, Kurnool, Kadapa, Anantapur and Chittoor districts. Police arrested scores of protesters in Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Guntur, Kurnool, Rajahmunrdy, Kakinada and other towns. inance Minister Arun Jaitley on August 11 assured Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MPs from Andhra Pradesh that the central government will “very shortly” announce new measures to help the revenue-deficit state. Jaitley assured the delegation of MPs that the Narendra Modi government will walk an extra mile to help the state, though it may not give the special category status. The MPs including central minister Y. S. Chowdary met Jaitley in the national capital to seek immediate steps to grant special status to Andhra Pradesh as per the com-

mitment given by the central government while dividing the state. “We are examining the possibility particularly after the 14th Finance Commission,” Jaitley said in an apparent reference to the commission doing away with special status to any state. “One thing is absolutely clear that irrespective of whatever name (it is) called, a special assistance has to be given continuously for next few years to the state of Andhra Pradesh. It will not be in any way less than what the state’s needs are and what is being expected,” he said. “It will be more than a normal special assistance which is given to

a state. It will be in terms of revenue assistance, in terms of covering up revenue shortfall, it will be for helping in building the state capital and also by allocating several new projects. Some projects have already been given. We have

to walk an extra mile as far as helping the state is concerned,” he added. Chowdary told reporters later that Jaitley promised that an announcement will be made by month-end.

Delhi every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6.40 a.m. Though it was originally proposed to run the AP Express from New Delhi to Vijayawada daily, as announced in the railway budget, it was decided the train will originate

from Vizag and run via Vijayawada following popular demands. Prabhu said that with the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, separate trains were sanctioned for the two states. He announced that the existing AP Express between Hyderabad and New Delhi will now be called Telangana Express. Officially this will come into effect only from November 15. The existing AP Express is a daily train, connecting Hyderabad with New Delhi. Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu said discussions were on to make Vizag a separate railway zone. The ceremony in Delhi was also attended by union Ministers Ashok Gajapati Raju, Y.S. Chowdary and Bandaru Dattatreya.

new train connecting Andhra Pradesh and New Delhi was flagged off by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu on August 12. The existing AP Express connecting New Delhi and Hyderabad will now be called Telangana Express. The Visakhapatnam-New DelhiVisakhapatnam Super Fast AC AP Express began its maiden journey from this coastal city after the min-

protests by the opposition parties for last couple of days over the issue of special category status. They are targeting ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) for its failure to get justice for the state despite being a partner in BJP-led NDA coalition at the centre. The opposition parties have also alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party has gone back on its election promise to accord special status to the state. YSR Congress party on August 10 staged a protest in New Delhi, urging the central government to immediately fulfill the commitment given at the time of bifurcation of the state last year. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is likely to visit New Delhi on August 16 to meet Modi and urge him to take immediate steps to give special status to the state.

ister flagged off the train through video linking from Rail Bhavan in New Delhi. The tri-weekly express will leave from Vizag, as the coastal city is also called, every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at 7.45 a.m. and will reach New Delhi at 7 p.m. the next day. It will stop at Duvvada, Vijayawada, Anakapalli, Samalkot, Rajahmundry, Tadepalligudem and Eluru in Andhra Pradesh and Khammam, Warangal, Peddapalli, Ramagundum and Sirpur Kagaznagar in

Telangana. It will also stop at Balharshah, Chandrapur, Nagpur JN, Itarsi, Bhopal, Jhansi, Gwalior and Agra Cantt., taking over 36 hours to cover the 2,099 km. The train will leave from New

ocktail” star Deepika Padukone says the ‘style icon’ tag associated with her is something that happened by default. Asked about what it meant to her to be a style icon, Deepika said: “I think for me, it just happened by default. I just have amazingly talented people who work and put it together for me and make me look the way I do. I don’t think I can take credit for that.” Deepika has often stated that her mother Ujjala is her style icon and she reiterated that at an event which she attended to launch an eyewear brand collection. “I don’t think she knows about it. She’s had a big influence on my life. It (dressing) was always simple, minimalistic. She would always stick to white, blue and pastel shades. Even accessorizing was very minimal. That’s why my mum (style icon),” shared the 29-year-old. Having started out as a model, the manner in which she carries her style has always been appreciated by fans and the industry. But still, she thinks that she’s incapable of styling someone else. “I don’t think I know enough about fashion to be styling other people. If anything, I think there are a lot of people alrady.

ctor Ranbir Kapoor says his emotional breakdown on the set of “Tamasha” has been blown out of proportion and clarified that he had only tears of joy on the completion of the Imtiaz Ali-project. Imtiaz had thrown a wrap-up party of their upcoming film “Tamasha” on Saturday night here. Ranbir attended it with his co-star Deepika Padukone and the film’s producers Sajid Nadiadwala and Siddharth Roy Kapur. Earlier reports suggested that Ranbir and Deepika, who were dating in the past, ended up having an emotional breakdown after the shoot’s wrap-up on August 6. However, Ranbir was quick to clear the air once asked about it. I don’t think we got emotional the way it was written (in the media). I think we were very happy. For me, it was my second film with Imtiaz Ali.

ollywood actor John Abraham, who has worked with the likes of Nana Patekar, Paresh Rawal and Naseeruddin Shah in “Welcome Back”, says that working with such veterans was great learning experience for him. Salman hopeful Gita will be reunited with family The ‘Bajrangi Bhaijan’ actor says he would have certainly done whatever he could to bring Gita — stranded in Pakistan for 15 years — back if govt had not already intervened IANS, MUMBAI

Also, we are scared that ‘What if she does not get rightful parents?’ So right now, let the government officials take care of this and I am sure they will do a great job of this,” he added. Gita, who is hearing and speech impaired is living in Government Karachi, Pakistan for the must help in last 15 years. In 2003, very possible Gita, who was 11-yearsmanner to help old then, was spotted by the girl get back the Pakistan Rangers in Lahore, after she strayed to her home across the border. She was country then handed over to Edhi Foundation, a social welfare organisation in Pakistan. “We should thank the NGO of Pakistan and the foster parents, who supported her all these years and kept an Indian there.” However, he asserts that if Gita is brought back to India, then she must have a better life here than what she has been living there in Pakistan Gita’s story is similar to the one shown in Salman’s release “Bajrangi Bhaijaan”, where a mute Pakistani girl Munni is helped by Salman’s character to get back to her nation.

Preity to judge Miss India-Canada 2015 MUMBAI: Bollywood actress Preity Zinta has left for Canada to judge the beauty peagent Miss India-Canada 2015. “Good morning Preeti Zinta folks. Just landed in Germany en route to Canada to judge Miss India-Canada,” the actress tweeted on Tuesday. Will keep visiting India: Rahat NEW DELHI: Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, who believes music and sports can strengthen ties between India and Pakistan, says he will continue to visit India despite problems. On Thursday, the “Main jahaan rahun” and “O re piya” singer was questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) here in a case of alleged forex violation. In 2011, he was arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence following a day’s detention at the airport here for carrying undisclosed foreign currency totalling more than $100,000. But Rahat remains undeterred and says now “there are no issues”. “There was the issue in 2011. The Enforcement Directorate called us again for some pending queries. We tried our best to fulfill them. Thanks to god, they were satisfied. Now there are no issues. I will keep visiting India like before,” Rahat told IANS in a telephonic interview from Mumbai.

The singer, who is visiting India after a four-year gap, is currently in the country to celebrate the success of his songs in Bollywood films like “Hamari Adhuri Kahani” and “Drishyam”. “Music has no boundaries. Music and sports can play a strong role in strengthening bilateral ties. And they have already done it. These things matter a lot, so they should be given more importance,” he stressed. Speaking positively on the “musical and cultural” relations between India and Pakistan, he said “certain people” were trying to put chains on the blossoming bilateral ties. Rahat, whose track “Zaruri tha” is getting massive response in India, credits Bollywood’s Bhatt camp for its growing popularity. The song has appeared in the film “Hamari Adhuri Kahani”, which is directed by Mohit Suri and produced by Mahesh Bhatt. The song is a part Rahat’s album ‘Back 2 Love’, released in 2014.

No surprise if ‘Phantom’ is banned in Pak: Saif IANS, MUMBAI

A

ctor-producer Saif Ali Khan on Tuesday said it won’t be surprising if his forthcoming film “Phantom”, which touches upon Mumbai’s 26/11 attacks, is banned in Pakistan. His comment comes in reaction to 26/11 mastermind and Jamaatud Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Muhammad Saeed’s petition in a Lahore court, demanding a ban on the release of filmmaker Kabir Khan’s political thriller in Pakistan. The “Phantom” team organised a press conference here on Tuesday to address the issue. “We too have made films which have been passed easily in Pakistan. But those kinds of films are different. When there are films like this (Phantom), which have a realistic

base, it’s no surprise for me if this film is banned in Pakistan,” the 44-year-old added. “Phantom”, which is slated to release on August 28, is based on author Hussain Zaidi’s book

“Mumbai Avengers” having the post 26/11 attacks in Mumbai and global terrorism in its background. Kabir, whose 2012 film “Ek Tha Tiger”, also on terrorism, was banned in Pakistan, but whose

“Bajrangi Bhaijaan” has been lauded across the border, said: “Whenever there is a political backdrop in a film, there are chances that the film won’t be screened over there. That’s the kind of relationship that we (India and Pakistan) share, as whenever we venture into a political backdrop, problems are created. “But the issue today is not that, since they haven’t even seen the film. The issue today is that we’re really amused that a wanted terrorist has gone and filed a petition that we’re spreading poison.” “Bangistan” and “Baby” are some other films which were also not screened in Pakistan earlier this year. “Phantom” writer Hussain Zaidi said: “This man (Saeed) is a wanted terrorist by US, UK, Australia and India.

Modi took 57 days to cover 18 countries in his first year in office, whereas Manmohan Singh travelled to 14 countries over 42 days in the first year of UPA-II. When Manmohan visited China in 2008 for four days, he visited only one city and had 10 engagements. Modi’s visit lasted three days during which he visited three cities and had 25 engagements. Similarly when Singh visited U.S. in 2009, he visited only one city and held 15 engagements. During his trip to US in 2014, Modi visited two cities and had 33 engagements, including the historic MSG address. Modi has been able to bond closely with world leaders and the chemistry “goes beyond diplomatic niceties”, in an official’s words. “Modi believes in direct public engagement wherever he goes,” an official was quoted as saying.

India celebrates 69th Independence Day

From ‘feel bad’ to ‘feel good’

As soon as Narendra Modi assumed office as India’s 14th prime minister in May last year, there was an electrifying effect in the whole system. The stagnation gave way to dynamism, listlessness to new hope. On the occasion of Independence Day, we take stock of how the economy and the nation in general has fared in the last one year IANS, NEW DELHI

R

ecent reviews of global institutions and the prevailing investor confidence suggest a striking change in the perception about the Indian economy over the past year. IANS spoke to a host of stakeholders and analysts on the overall performance of the government since it was inaugurated on May 26 last year. The stock markets have soared, with a key index now up some 17 percent, after touching an all-time high in March. There were improvements in other parameters of the economy as well, notably on inflation that is now at historically-low levels, even as the rupee did not fall as much as other currencies against the dollar. All this led to many global institutions like the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, Asian Development Bank and some UN institutions to upgrade India’s growth forecast to some 7.5-8 percent, calling it the fastest expanding globally, surpassing China. Even some global ratings agencies like Moody’s that had not-toolong-ago warned India of a downgrade, if its policy-makers did not pursue a course correction,

changed their outlook for the country to positive from stable. Fitch also reaffirmed its stable outlook. As the Modi government goes about changing global perceptions, its actions are guided by the belief of the need to change the mental outlook of the country. In fact, integral to rising aspirations and ease of doing business are the campaigns for sanitation and clean governance, said the analysts.

SKILL INDIA In July, Modi launched the Skill India Mission, terming it a war against poverty by training youth to earn their livelihood with honor and how the young population could do wonders with proper abilities. Launching the program on the first World Youth Skills Day in presence of union ministers, chief ministers and leaders of industry, Modi said a large number of India’s population is young and could do wonders if

trained well for various works and trades available in the world. “We have begun a war against poverty. Every poor is my soldier in this war and we have to win this war with their support,” Modi said. 72 percent respondents satisfied with Modi govt: Survey NEW DELHI: Over 72 percent of people surveyed in an opinion poll have said they were satisfied with the performance of the NDA government with 56 percent stating that Narendra Modi was an effective prime minister who had helped improve India’s image globally. The survey by the CNN-IBN and IBN 7 news channels said the respondents had shown “strong faith” in the Modi government with 61 percent saying that the National Democratic Alliance government has improved their economic condition while 63 percent said India’s economy had started looking up during the last one year. A press release said the survey was conducted by Axis MyIndia across 23

states and more than 155 districts with a sample size of 20,00 across all age groups and sections with a 70 to 30 urban-rural spread. “The survey findings show an overwhelming support for Modi. Over 72 percent of the respondents said that they are satisfied with the performance of the Modi government on account of development, skillful governance and lower prices in the previous year. Fiftysix percent of the sample believes that Narendra Modi is an effective prime minister and has helped improve India’s image globally,” the release said. The CNN-IBN release said most respondents in the survey felt that corruption and inflation have either come

down or have stagnated at the very least. “Employment opportunities have gone up as per 62 percent of the respondents,” it said. On the issue of the relationship between the government and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh — the ideological fountainhead of Bharatiya Janata Party, 32 percent of the respondents felt that there was no

interference by RSS in the affairs of the government. “On the impact of controversial statements such as those relating to ‘ghar wapsi’, approximately 31 percent of the respondents felt that such statements do not dent the image of the government at all whereas approximately 33 percent felt that such statements do have an adverse impact. citizens by deploying IT and associated tools. Choosing no less than a sports stadium to launch the initiative where who’s who of India Inc. packed the rows, Prime Minister Modi said industry captains have committed investments of Rs.4500 billion toward “Digital India” and create 1.8 million new jobs. The prime minister also unveiled a logo for Digital India — an umbrella program that seeks to transform India into a digitallyempowered, knowledge economy with a host of initiatives for a synchronized and coordinated engagement of the government and its agencies. The prime minister said it was not enough for India to say that it is an ancient civilization, and a country of 1.25 billion with favorable demography. “Modern technology needs to be blended with these strengths,” he said. The vision is centered on three key areas: Digital infrastructure as a utility to every citizen; Governance and service on demand; Digital empowerment of citizens. “The essence of India’s Digital story is not to be told in the numbers of phones, laptops or the internet use,” he said. percent of the respondents felt that those making controversial statement should be controlled,” the survey said. On the government’s initiatives, the survey said 85 percent respondents endorsed Swachch Bharat as one of the best initiatives and 76 percent supported Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana. It said initiatives such as Make in India and Digital India also received a positive response with 43 percent and 42 percent support respectively “though there was some ambiguity with regard to the land bill”. “Respondents also felt that PM Modi has effectively utilized every possible communication tool to reach out to varied audiences. 30 percent stated that radio (Mann Ki Baat) has been used very well while 23 percent endorsed the use of TV, 20 percent gave a thumbs-up to the use of social media platforms while 17 percent and four percent mentioned public rallies and interventions in parliament, respectively as effective tools for communication used by PM,” the release said.

Indian economy on a robust path

Recent reviews of global institutions and the prevailing investor confidence suggest a striking change in the perception about the Indian economy over the past year. A sneak peak...

S

ince May 16 last year, when the elections results were declared and it became evident that the next government will be under Narendra Modi — who has been pro-business and an investors favorite — the stock markets have soared, with a key index now up some 17 percent, after touching an all-time high in March. There were improvements in other parameters of the economy as well, notably on inflation that is now at historically-low levels, even as the rupee did not fall as much as other currencies against the dollar. Albeit in spurts, there emerged some green shoots, even as reform-oriented decisions came in regular doses. All this led to many global institutions like the World Bank,

International Monetary Fund, Asian Development Bank and some UN institutions to upgrade India’s growth forecast to some 7.5-8 percent, calling it the fastest expanding globally, surpassing China. There is a new code of civic behavior being created through cleansing campaigns like Clean India, or Swachch Bharat, and the Clean Ganga project. The first year has been a cleansing exercise, as some analysts point out. “Several brass tack issues like Swachch Bharat, financial inclusion and others have considerably improved the country’s macro economic situation in terms of decline in inflation, stability in currency value and made Indian financial markets attractive for the foreign investors,” industry cham-

ber Assocham secretary general D.S. Rawat said. “An economy of two trillion dollars, well integrated with the world, cannot be catapulted into high growth merely with change in the government. However much the government is sincere, the policy tweaking, legislative changes and revival of investment appetite to be followed by increase in consumer demand would take about two, two and a half years. A lot would also depend on the global markets which are subdued but all the same the government has made a good beginning,” he said. “The prime minister’s foreign visits have brought in a qualitative change in the way our economic diplomacy is being pursued. Our missions abroad are much more aligned with the economic priori-

Didar Singh, secretary general of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), said that the business confidence continued to be high and the investor community had begun gearing up to tap the huge potential of the economy. “India today is in a far better situation than it was a year ago,” Singh said. “The GDP growth has improved, advance estimates for the current fiscal are higher at 7.4 percent as against 6.9 percent for fiscal 2014. The stakeholders were also happy with three other programs, initiated by Prime Minister Modi during the year — “Make in India”, “Digital India” and “Skill India”. “The Make in India and Swachch Bharat campaign are really good initiatives that have been undertaken. I see the Make in India program as a reality which will immensely benefit the country,” Sanjiv Goenka, chairman of the R.P. Sanjiv Goenka Group, said.

n Amritsar: Famous for its Golden Temple, Amritsar has some of the most prominent places that reflect the historic post-Independence era of India. Some of the tourist attractions include Attari border and Wagah border, which are the international borders that divide India from Pakistan. The Gobindgarh Fort, which is the only surviving fort from the times of Maharaja Ranjit Singh which has had a continuous historical narrative, including events from the struggle for independence, and lastly Jallianwala Bagh, the place where thousands lost their lives during a peace meet. n Andaman and Nicobar Islands in India are famous not only for the beaches but also the number of historic monuments and museums it houses. The cellular jail is the most important tourist spot there.

n Delhi: The county’s capital has some

tourist attractions like Azad Hind Gram, built in order to honor Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, India Gate and Parliament House. n Kottayam is known for its panoramic backwater stretches, lush paddy fields, highlands and extensive rubber plantations. Kerala’s Varma Pazhassi Raja was one of the earliest freedom fighters in India. n Lucknow is a beautiful city that still retains its old world charm. The ‘Kakori’ train incident during the independence movement took place in the same district. Some of the places to see here include the British Residency, Bara Imambara, Chattar Manzil, Jama Masjid, Rumi Darwaza, Moti Mahal, Lakshmana and Hussainabad Imambara. n Goa, a place whose history with reference to the Indian freedom struggle goes back to the era 1812-1815. For people interested in relishing a bygone era, their itinerary should include Chapora Fort, Fort Aguada, Secretariat, Basilica de Bom Jesus, Church of Our Lady of the Rosary and Royal Chapel of St. Anthony and the Ancestral Goa museum.

oused in the hues of the tricolor, an array of delectable food delights will be up for grabs as restaurants in the capital are gearing up to notch up the food quotient with exclusive cuisine, celebrating the patriotic fervor of the country’s 69th Independence Day. There are tiranga paneer tikkas, tricolor pizzas, cakes, pastries and more to woo foodies during the IDay weekend. Café Immigrant in central Delhi’s Connaught Place area, for example, has planned to offer a special tiranga paneer tikka. “Paneer tikka is an Indian dish made of chunks of cottage cheese marinated in spices and cooked in tandoor/oven. Our chef Rajinder has made this dish considering the Indian flag,” Gaurav Chadha, owner of Café Immigrant, told IANS.

Cafe Immigrant has also planned to offer a scrumptious dessert — kalakand cheesecake in the colors of the flag. Moreover, the restaurant will be decorated with tricolor balloons, while flags will be placed on tables to revel in the patriotic zeal. La Vie, a restaurant located in Khan Market, and Gastronomica, Greater Kailash, are offering special tricolor pastas and pizzas on August 15 to com-

memorate the occasion. “We would be doing a special tricolored pasta which would be showcasing three of our bestsellers, which are spaghetti Bolognese, spaghetti Carbonara and fusilli a la Pesto chicken. “We would like our patrons to enjoy three delectable pastas on one plate while joining us in expressing our solidarity with one nation that has so many

colors to choose from this Independence day,” La Vie’s owner Anirudh Gupta told IANS. Moving beyond brick and mortar restaurants, Cook Gourmet, an online portal for ready-to-cook food, is offering north Indian cuisine with a patriotic touch for their customers. “We have Saffron Curry, which is essentially an exotic sambar with rice and blueberry mishti doi and green raita to carry forward all the colors of the Indian flag,” Daman Singh, co-founder, Cook Gourmet, told IANS. How can desserts be left behind? French pastry and bakery enterprise L’Opéra is launching an Independence Day tricolor cake. “There are many ways to say Jai Hind,” said (Top) Tricolor Cake from French pastry Laurent Samandari, co-founder and and bakery enterprise L’Opéra. managing director of L’Opéra. India celebrates 69th Independence Day No exchange of sweets at Wagah border this year In a departure from the past, the Border Security Force has decided that it will neither offer nor accept sweets and gifts from the Pakistani Rangers

Breaking away from tradition, Modi refused to use the bullet-proof glass enclosure while addressing the nation from the Red Fort last year, sending the security apparatus into a tizzy.

Will Modi opt for safe enclosure on I-Day?

In the wake of recent threats, security officials are insisting for a bullet-proof glass enclosure for Modi IANS, NEW DELHI

I

n the wake of immense security threat, officials are insisting for a bullet-resistant glass enclosure for Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his 69th Independence Day speech, a media report said on August 13. Security officials are seeking bulletproof enclosure as Modi continues to face threats from many extremists and terror organizations. The security officials don’t want a repeat of last year’s episode, when breaking from the past tradi-

tion, the PM had delivered his Independence Day speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort minus the usual bulletproof glass enclosure. As Modi had asked for removal of the bulletproof glass last year, more security had to be put in place to ensure foolproof security for Modi. The practice of using the bulletproof glass enclosure began around 1985-86. After Indira Gandhi’s assassination, Modi became the first prime minister to deliver his Independence Day speech from

the Red Fort without bulletproof glass enclosure. Meanwhile, ahead of the 69th Independence Day, security has been tightened across Punjab, especially in border districts in the wake of Punjab terror attack last month. “This time, we want the bullet-resistant glass enclosure back in its place to ensure better security for the PM, who continues to face threats from terrorists and extremists. As of now, no final decision has been taken on its insertion but we continue to insist,” an official said.

The two countries’ border forces traditionally exchange sweets at the Wagah border even on festivals like Diwali and Eid.

AMRITSAR: There will be no exchange of sweets and gifts between Indian and Pakistani border forces during the Independence day functions of both countries. In a departure from tradition, the BSF has decided that it will neither offer nor accept sweets and gifts from the Pakistani Rangers. The two countries’ border forces traditionally exchange sweets at the Wagah border even on festivals such as Eid and Diwali. This year, BSF has decided to not accept any such gifts to protest the series of terrorist attacks in Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir over the

past month. “There is going to be no exchange this year at the Wagah border. Neither are we going to offer nor will we accept any gift,” said BSG IG Punjab Frontier Anil Paliwal. He suggested that the ‘prevailing situation’ along the border prevented the BSF from showing any “soft gestures” to the Pakistani Rangers. The decision has been communicated to field formations,” a senior BSF officer said. The souring of ties and customary courtesies between the two countries was recently seen when Pakistan refused a similar Indian gesture during Eid festivities last month.

Rahman to perform in London MUMBAI: Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman is set to perform at London’s O2 arena on August 15, India’s Independence Day, after five years. “Dear Fans and Friends from London, Looking forward to seeing you all @ the O2 arena on the 15th of August,” the composer tweeted. The official website of O2 arena read: “The double Grammy and double Oscar, BAFTA and Golden Globe winner, returns to The O2 after five years, with a one off greatest hits show on Saturday 15 August 2015. He will be joined by very special guests including; Neeti Mohan, Javed Ali, Karthik, Haricharan, Jonita Gandhi and Hriday Gattani.”

The music maestro made history when he became the first Indian to win two Oscars in a year, 2009, for Danny Boyle’s “Slumdog Millionaire”, the ragsto-riches story of a Mumbai slumdweller. The ‘Mozart of Madras’ had also bagged two awards at the 52nd Annual Grammy for his song “Jai ho” from the same film.

Parineeti to attend India Day parade in New York MUMBAI: Bollywood actress Parineeti Chopra will attend the India Day parade in New York on August 16. Parineeti, who has starred in films like “Ladies vs Ricky Bahl”, “Ishaqzaade”, “Shuddh Desi Romance” and “Hasee Toh Phasee”, shared the news with her fans on Twitter. “Representing India at the India Day Parade on the 16th of August at Madison Avenue at 11 a.m.!!! Come meet me in New York,” the 26-year-old said.

Thousands celebrate India Day parade in US town WASHINGTON: Thousands of Indian expatriates came together in a US town for a jubilant parade ahead of India’s Independence Day celebrations on August 15, a media report said this week. The 11th annual India Day parade was organized on August 9 at Oak Tree Road and Iselin in New Jersey’s Edison town amid cries of “Jai Hind!”, NJ online reported. “Where there’s love, there’s life,” said state Senator Ray Lesniak quoting Mahatma Gandhi at the event organized by the Indian Business Association.

Edison Mayor Thomas Lankey pointed out that in the past, two different parades by two rival groups were organized on the same day, and that he was glad “there’s one parade now”. Ajay Patil, a Democrat running for Edison township council, said, “When it comes to India... I don’t think any Indian is divided.” Over 35,000 people attended the event last year to mark the founding of the world’s largest democracy in 1947. Indian Americans are known to celebrate I-Day with fervor across the United States.

Infusing patriotism: Khans of Bollywood I

Be it ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’, ‘Sarfarosh’ or ‘Swades’, Salman, Aamir and Shah Rukh have successfully rekindled the feeling of nationalism in their audiences across all age groups

his life for the sake of his country. More recently, Salman yet again essayed an army man (shown as an ex-army man) in “Jai Ho”, where he is seen fighting the corrupt and the unjust.

ndian cinema has contributed immensely to glorify the contributions of people who have moved mountains to achieve independence. When it comes to Hindi Cinema, the Khans rule the roost. Here’s taking a look at some of the films which have had Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Saif Ali Khan show their patriotic sides. Aamir Khan As ACP Ajay Singh Rathod in “Sarfarosh”, Aamir left one and all surprised with his jaw-dropping

performance in 1999. Soon, he went on to portray Bhuvan in “Lagaan” from a small village named Champaner in preindependent India, where his love for his soil took centre stage and his determination overpowered the British. And then came “Rang De Basanti,” a New Age film that inspired the youth to embrace the patriotic zest. Salman Khan Salman, who enthralled the audiences worldwide recently as ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’, played a soldier in “Heroes”, who sacrificed

Shah Rukh Khan As Kabir Khan in “Chak De! India”, Shah Rukh Khan left millions in awe. The maturity with which he dealt with the character spoke volumes about his commitment towards it. As a Hockey coach, SRK draped the spirit of patriotism with much passion. Earlier, he played an NRI in “Swades” who feels guilty of not having done much for his birthplace. Saif Ali Khan Saif essayed the role of aaptain Anuj Nayyar in JP Dutta’s “LOC Kargil”. Capt. Anuj Nayyar belonged to the 17 Jat Regiment of the Indian Army, who lost his life during operations in the Kargil War in 1999. The Nawab of Pataudi also essayed the role of a spy in “Agent Vinod”. Saif will be seen in “Phantom”, a film which will sure infuse patriotism in all.

Big B gets nostalgic about ‘Sholay’ turning 40 this I-Day MUMBAI: “Sholay” is turning 40 on this Independence Day and its actor Amitabh Bachchan is elated as the iconic film is still “reverberating within all film goers”. The Ramesh Sippy directorial is an action adventure Bollywood movie revolving around two petty thieves hired by a police officer to exact revenge on a ruthless bandit. Sharing a few stills from the movie’s sets on Twitter, Amitabh captioned them: “SHOLAY 40 years!” He also tweeted an image of all time hit dialogues from the film. “SHOLAY 40 years!! a lifetime gone by but still reverberating within all film goers!

A scene from the cult classic ‘Sholay.’

Filmmaker Karan Johar is a huge fan of the iconic film “Sholay” and says it defines the Hindi film industry. “Sholay defines us as a film fraternity. Pre-Sholay and post-Sholay, that’s what we are. It is truly a text book film (sic),” Karan said during the trailer launch of his latest romantic comedy Shaandaar here. Karan also revealed that he has seen the Ramesh Sippy directorial, which will complete 40 glorious years on August 15, a “100 times”. “I’ve seen ‘Sholay’ 100 times, like everybody living in this country must have,” he said. Asked about the most “shaandar” (stylish) personality in Bollywood,

Karan promptly replied: “Most ‘shaandar’ personality in film industry is Amitabh Bachchan.” According to actor Akshay Kumar, a remake of Sholay is generally a bad idea, and feels he would never be able to reprise any character from the Ramesh Sippy directorial. At a press conference here to promote the forthcoming film Brothers, Akshay was asked if he would be a part of a Sholay remake. He said: “Sholay cannot be remade. It would be injustice, so don't even think about it. And if I am asked to play a role in the remake, it’s impossible. The way it has been made, it would be injustice to portray the same way.”

Side. Both robberies occurred in the 1300 block of South Keeler, according to a business alert from the Chicago Police. The first was reported at 12:30 am, while the second was reported at 11:37 pm. In each incident, a man armed with a handgun approached the driver and demanded cash and other belongings. The suspect is described as a black man 23 to 27, between 5-foot-2 and 5-foot-6, and 190-200 pounds, according to the police. He had black hair in dreadlocks. Anyone with information should call Area Central detectives at (312) 747-8382.

A daughter’s ode: a privilege to be a part of my Dad’s life

(continue from page ) I would tell him about everything that was on my mind at that moment and he would grab my hand and tell me how happy he was to see me. He was always so affectionate, loving, and willing to help me whenever I needed anything. In middle school, when I would chronically oversleep and sheepishly shuffle into his room to wake him up after missing the bus so that I could ask him to take me to school. He would rub the sleep from his eyes, kick out his legs from under the covers, and, without even a second thought, roll out of bed after only a few hours of sleep to take me to school. His willingness to sacrifice his time for me continued well into college. When I was trekking back to my dorm from the library through the mountains of snow against icy gusts of wind, wondering if I would succumb to the pressures of midterms and exams, I knew I could call my dad to work through any crisis, whether petty or existential. He never missed an opportunity to tell me that he loved me, that he was proud of me, and that he knew I was going to do “big things” someday.

2015-2016. Also, holding the first place spot for Spokesmodel Speech, ‘Glitter for the Golden’, she showed judges her passion for community project. After being rejected by a prominent local Desi Artist Company, she didn’t give up her dream. “Mom, if this company doesn’t see the value in my project, then I can market it on my own just you wait and see”, she kept telling her mother. At the Nationals, this passion-driven teen will represent talent and heritage through Bollywood/Bhangra dance as well. A sweet, smart and sassy speech will also be included as she aims for the National Title this November.

Women entrepreneurs’ conference on Sept 2 BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Reshma Saujani, founder and CEO of Girls Who Code, a national non-profit organization working to close the gender gap in technology and prepare young women for jobs of the future, will deliver the keynote address at the 29th Annual Entrepreneurial Woman’s Conference on September 2. Presented by the Women’s Business Development Center, the day-long event will be held at Chicago’s McCormick Place-West, 2301 S. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Saujani will deliver her remarks at the Women’s Empowerment Luncheon which begins at 12:30 pm. A graduate of Yale Law School, she has stayed true to her passion for public service, becoming Deputy Public Advocate of New York City and most recently running a spirited campaign for Public Advocate on a platform of creating educational and economic opportunities for women and girls, immigrants, and those who have been

Founder & CEO Reshma Sanjani sidelined in the political process. The conference is designed to accelerate the growth of women businesses through powerful workshops and a dynamic trade show, connecting women entrepreneurs with prospective corporate and government clients.

When I was home for the holidays, we would linger in the kitchen for hours after meals, chatting about anything that came to mind. Our conversation would tackle anything from politics in the Middle East to religion, gender norms, or even normative philosophy. It made no difference that our upbringings and perspectives were often anti-parallel. He was such an open-minded, intelligent thinker that he could spot the kinks in my questionable arguments immediately, while accepting those that were better constructed, regardless of how different they may have strayed from his world view. But he was consistently so patient with me, listening to me when I was in the wrong, while still encouraging me to take a step back, admitting his own shortcomings as well, but gently reminding me that he had accumulated several more decades of wisdom than I had. But my dad didn’t constrain himself to the role of a humorless intellectual. He would transform into a comedian without warning. In fact, he spent most of his time with me joking, smiling, and being silly. I remember disconnecting the wireless router for less than a minute to reset my laptop’s connection to the network and having him look up at me, almost serious, asking, “When are you going to college again?” Whenever I teased him back, he loved to crinkle his eyebrows, squint at me with his hands on his hips asking, “Do you

like to give me a hard time?” Even on his last day, he kept me smiling. I was hurrying down the hall when he came home and intercepted me with a massive hug. When I told him I had been rushing to the bathroom, he replied, “Oh, I thought you were rushing to give me a hug because you were so excited that Dad was home.” I last saw him smiling at me from across the room, sitting on our couch, telling me that he would see me later at a religious event in the evening. I was proud to hear his voice over the speakers as he led evening prayer later that night. I watched our congregation complete Namaaz in unison, with the guidance of his words. One moment my dad was waiting for dinner while talking about politics, joking, and laughing with friends. The next moment he had collapsed. And just an hour later he was gone. Even until his last day, he knew how to take on so many roles: that of a tactical businessman, a loving father, and a dedicated leader in our spiritual community. Though I am still unable to verbalize or comprehend what his absence means for me, I am constantly reminded that I have been privileged to have shared the last two decades with someone as versatile, clever, charismatic, and kind as my father.

Teen knocks down man in hit-and-run crash BY A STAFF WRITER T. LOUIS, MO-- A St. Louis 18-yearold has been jailed on $100,000 cash bond after being charged Ashish ‘Bapi’ Gupta killed with involuntary in hit and run crash manslaughter in connection with a hit-and-run crash that killed Ashish “Bapi’’ Gupta, an Indian American IT professional. Dontae Jackson also is charged with leaving an accident scene and making a false report. He was charged after the police identified him as the driver of the car that fatally injured the 50-year-old Gupta on June 28. Since the accident, Gupta’s family has launched a public safety campaign in his name, promoting street surfaces that will slow traffic, better lighting and marked pedestrian crossings. They have created a GoFundMe account to cover Bapi Gupta’s expenses and fund their campaign. Gupta, son of Genie Dee of Los Gatos, Calif., and the late Naba Kumar Gupta of Lincoln, Nebraska, grew up mostly in Lincoln, eventually coming to St. Louis to study at Washington University with a Chancellor’s Honorary Academic Scholarship. and employment. He also pointed out that added that the number of Minority students who secured admission in different branches of Engineering was about 1,00,000 and in medicine, 7,000, as a result of the reservation. “Succeeding in giving the reservations to Minorities, despite multiple legal hurdles and strong opposition to this initiative from a few sections of the community, was a stupendous and historical success”, added Mr. Ali Shabbir. Shabbir said that nearly two million Telugu diaspora, comprising scientists, IT professionals and doctors, who are the highest

paid job-holders in the USA, have been immensely contributing for the growth of both American and Indian economies and thereby making the Telugu people proud. Considering their love for their homeland, he invited them to multiply their efforts to invest their savings in their home states and to establish industrial units by making full use of their exposure to high-end technology. “However, considering the heavy incidence of poverty, illiteracy, and ill-health in the rural areas of the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana State, the NRI’s with flair for social service, may consider using their resources and expertise in finding enduring solutions to

these problems”, advised Mr. Ali Shabbir. Iftekhar Shareef, Trustee and Events Chair of FIA Chicago, said that the political career of Ali Shabbir reflected the secular credentials of the Indian voter. He announced the upcoming events of ATA conference in Chicago around Labor Day weekend 2016 and requested all to attend India’s 69th Independence Day Parade and Celebration at Devon on August 15 with friends and families. A Tri-color “Khandwa” significance of good lucks was presented to Shabbir Ali by Hanumanth Reddy and Arshad Ali Khan.

orking out makes you healthier and happier in the long run. But your fitness routine could be damaging your skin and hair! Know what to do before, while and after workout to make your skin look radiant and hair healthy. Capital-based dermatologist Kiran Lohia recommends a few tips for keeping you gorgeous during your fitness regime: l Pre-workout: Before a workout, it is vital to prep in some simple ways. First of all, wear a deodorant. By wearing such anti-sweating products you can prevent a multitude of problems that can erupt when you sweat too much in those extra-friction areas. Too much sweat in the underarms can result in excessive odor. Another problem is that the risk of a fungal infection goes up significantly as fungus likes wet

and dark places. If you are a swimmer, then most of you feel that your skin gets especially dry after your water workout. This is because chlorine is extremely drying for the skin. To protect your epidermis, apply a barrier ointment like Vaseline before Always swimming. Thinking skills linked to heart disease risk IANS, LONDON

P

eople with low scores on a test of thinking skills required to reason, solve problems and plan may be at higher risk of heart attacks or strokes, new research has found. “These results show that heart and brain function are more closely related than appearances would suggest,” said study author Behnam Sabayan from Leiden University Medical Center in Leiden, the Netherlands. “While these results might not have immediate clinical translation, they emphasize that assessment of cognitive function should be part of the evaluation of future cardiovascular risk,” Sabayan noted. The study involved 3,926 people with an average age of 75 and without a history of heart attacks or strokes. The peo-

ple were also free of dementia. Four tests were used to evaluate the participants’ high-level thinking skills at the beginning of the study. The participants were then placed in groups of “low,” “medium” and “high” based on the results. The

participants were then followed for an average of three years to see who developed heart attacks or strokes. People in the lowest group of thinking skills were 85 percent more likely to have a heart attack than those in the highest group.

Good effects of spicy food are anti-obesity anti-oxidant, antiinflammation and anti-cancer percent lower risk of death compared to those who consumed spicy foods less than once a week. The association was similar in both men and women, and was stronger in those who did not consume alcohol. “Frequent consumption of spicy foods was also linked to a lower risk of death from cancer, and ischaemic heart and respiratory system diseases, and this was more evident in women than men,” the researchers noted in a paper published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ). Also, fresh and dried chilli peppers were the most commonly used spices in those who reported eating spicy foods weekly.

How to stay fit despite desk job NEW DELHI: Make your commute a workout or take the stairs if you are unable to hit the gym to stay in shape if you spend most of your day attending to a desk-bound job, says an expert. Ankur Sharma, platinum personal trainer, Fitness First, suggests how: n If you live closer to your office, then it’s better to walk, jog or cycle. If the office is far, try getting off the public transport a few stops earlier than your actual office stop or park your vehicle in a parking lot that is little far away so that you can walk for a few minutes. n Go for the stairs instead of the elevator: Don’t think about the extra effort, it will have its benefits as well. Climbing stairs is the best exercise. Try doing it in the morning when you reach office, in the evening while leaving and whenever you are

going for a meeting to a different floor. It will improve blood circulation, thus burning a lot of calories. n Try a few simple exercises in the office itself. Stretching: Stretch your hamstring, gluteus and chest while sitting on your office chair to avoid muscle tightness caused due to long hours of sitting. Stability: Single leg standing and pelvic bridge are the best exercises to gain stability. Strength: Squats on office chair and wall pushups give strength to your body.
