SPECIAL REPORT

ollywood superstar Salman Khan says his brother Arbaaz does not want to direct Dabangg 3, and that they will find a “good director” for it. Salman and his other brother Sohail have been busy promoting their forthcoming film Tubelight. While Sohail has directed Salman in films like Auzaar, Jai Ho, Hello Brother and Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya, Arbaaz has directed Salman in only one movie Dabangg 2. During a media interaction, when Salman was asked about his favorite director among the two, he said: “Since Arbaaz doesn’t want to direct, I feel Sohail is a better director

n one of the scenes of Raabta, liquor tycoon Zakir Merchant (Jim Sarbh) tells his love interest - Saira (Kriti Sanon), “Jab tak samajh nahi aata… be my guest.” I am sure the audience too will take him seriously and stoically gape at the screen. With badly etched, one-dimensional characters, Raabta is portrayed as an epic love story with reincarnation et al. Shiv (Sushant Singh Rajput) is a gregarious and charming banker who only has “how to hook a girl” on his mind. Accompanied by his best friend essayed by Varun Sharma, he goes to Budapest for work, where in due course he meets a chocolatier Saira. There is instant

So I said, ‘Very good, we will find a good director for that’.” Talking about the process of choosing his films, Salman said: “I feel that when you listen to a script and if you are not able to see yourself in that space, then ideally no matter how beautiful the script is you should not do it, or then you have to work that hard to visually see yourself in the movie. “Whenever a filmmaker approaches me with a script, first thing is that, I need to see myself doing it and till the time it doesn’t happen, I don’t sign a movie. When Kabir Khan came to me with the script of Tubelight, I gradually started looking myself in that character.”

chemistry between the two and they are hooked for life. But then life is not so easy, the convoluted plot goes through formulaic tropes of an oft-seen romance, till Zakir Merchant enters their lives and turns it topsyturvy, drawing them into the web of their previous life, some 800 years ago. The problem with “Raabta” is the plot. The film looks like two distinct films put together on the

Also, apart from the plot the direction is tacky. At one instance, marooned on an islet, while escaping from Zakir’s men, Shiv lands up offering packaged bottled water to Saira. How he gets the bottled water, leaves the audience scratching their heads? Apart from this, during the first half, the fast paced lifestyle of Shiv coupled with the meandering plot reveals nothing, making the viewing tedious. And by the beginning of the second half the plot is so predictable that you want it to wind up soon. Sushant Singh Rajput is earnest, but inconsistent in his delivery. He is despicable yet charming as Shiv and exudes charisma as Jilaan.

US Republican leader, aides shot, gunman killed in Virginia

The shooting by James Hodgkinson appears to be a ‘deliberate attack’ IANS, WASHINGTON

T

he gunman who opened fire at a Republican baseball practice match in Virginia state this week, injuring a key US Republican politician and multiple congressional aides, has been identified. President Donald Trump said the gunman had been killed. James Hodgkinson, 66, a resident of Belleville in Illinois, has been identified as the shooter by federal law enforcement sources, CNN reported. Hodgkinson’s Facebook page is largely political, his profile picture is a caricature of Bernie Sanders as Uncle Sam, while his feed is filled with anti-Trump sentiments such as “Trump is guilty and should go to prison for treason”. He also “liked” a political cartoon that suggested House of Representatives majority whip Steve Scalise should be fired. According to both congressional and law enforcement sources, the shooting appears to be a “deliberate attack”. “It’s too early to tell whether the shooting was an act of terrorism or whether members of Congress were specifically targeted,” FBI special agent Tim Slater told reporters at a news conference. Meanwhile, security has been tightened at the Capitol Hill and regular proceedings were canceled or postponed.

President Donald Trump said the gunman had been killed. (Photo: IANS)

Scalise, 51, was shot in the hip. He was undergoing surgery at a hospital and was in stable condition. Representative Mo Brooks told CNN that “at least five” persons were injured in the shooting, including two law enforcement officers and a congressional aide. Capitol Police said officers who were part of Scalise’s security detail returned fire and wounded the shooter, who was taken into custody. President Donald Trump said on Twitter that “Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, a true friend and patriot, was badly injured but will fully recover. Our thoughts and

US appeals court refuses to reinstate Trump travel ban WASHINGTON: The San Franciscobased 9th Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled against reinstating President Donald Trump’s revised executive order limiting travel from sixMuslim majority countries, the media reported. The ruling on Monday from the three-judge — Judges Michael Daly Hawkins, Ronald Gould and Richard Paez — panel is yet another stinging loss from a court that similarly refused to reinstate Trump’s original executive order on travel in February, reports CNN. “We conclude that the President, in issuing the Executive Order, exceeded the scope of the authority delegated to him by Congress,” the three judges, all appointed by former President Bill Clinton, wrote in the ruling. “Immigration, even for the Presi-

dent, is not a one-person show.” The judges cited Trump’s latest tweets in the travel ban saga. “Indeed, the President recently confirmed his assessment that it is the ‘countries’ that are inherently dangerous, rather than the 180 million individual nationals of those countries who are barred from entry under the President’s ‘travel ban’,” the judge wrote. They also cited White House press secretary Sean Spicer’s confirmation that Trump’s tweets are “considered official statements by the President of the United States”. On June 6, Trump tweeted: “That’s right, we need a travel ban for certain dangerous countries, not some politically correct term that won’t help us protect our people!”, reports CNN. —IANS

prayers are with him.” “We are deeply saddened by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of Congress, their staffs, Capitol Police, first responders, and all others affected,” he said. In a statement, Texas Rep. Roger Williams, one of the team’s coaches, said one of his staff members was shot during the incident and was receiving medical attention. Members of Congress were practising for a baseball game that was scheduled for June 15 night at Nationals Park. Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul said

“it would have been a massacre” without Capitol Hill Police. “Nobody would have survived without the Capitol Hill police,” Paul said on CNN. “It would have been a massacre without them.” Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake added that he saw a member of Scalise’s security detail return fire on the gunman for what felt like 10 minutes, even though the police officer was wounded in the leg. “Fifty (shots) would be an understatement, I’m quite sure,” Flake said when asked about the total amount of gunfire, including police returning fire.

‘Modi’s new India vision to help US’ NEW YORK: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “vision for a new India” will also help create jobs in the US, President Donald Trump’s Press Secretary Sean Spicer said while announcing Modi’s White House visit scheduled for June 26. Addressing the common interests of the two countries in an environment where Trump’s promotion of a policy of “Buy American, hire American” is stoking apprehensions in India, Spicer said: “US energy and technologies, including natural gas, are helping to build Prime Minister Modi’s vision for a new India and creating thousands of American jobs in the process.” “US-India trade has grown sixfold since 2000, from $19 billion to $115 billion in 2016.” “And the Indian economy is growing at over 7 per cent,” he said adding a note of optimism for the future. The White House’s spin on job creation by India in the US is in contrast to Trump’s comments about jobs fleeing to China and elsewhere. In April, Trump ordered a review of trade with countries with which US runs a deficit. India is on that list, although with deficit of $24 billion in pales in comparison with China’s $347 billion. The job creation comment also skirts the issues of Trump’s plans to curb outsourcing and to cut back on visas for professionals that New Delhi fears will turn off the spigot for Indian technical talent and businesses heading to the US. —IANS

Trump being probed for ‘obstruction’ IANS, WASHINGTON

T

he special counsel investigating possible Russian interference in the 2016 election is now also probing whether President Donald Trump engaged in obstruction of justice, The Washington Post said in a report. The move by special counsel Robert Mueller to investigate Trump's conduct marks a major turning point in the nearly yearold investigation led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which until recently focused on Russian meddling during the presidential campaign and on whether there was any coordination between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin, the daily said. The obstruction-of-justice investigation of the President began days after Comey was fired on May 9, according to sources

with the knowledge of the development. Mueller's office has taken up that work, and the preliminary interviews scheduled with intelligence officials indicate that his team is actively pursuing potential witnesses inside and outside the government. Investigators have also been

looking for any evidence of possible financial crimes among Trump associates. Trump had received private assurances from former FBI Director James B. Comey starting in January that he was not personally under investigation. However, that changed shortly after Comey's firing, the sources said.

Who will be India’s next President? The government is trying to evolve a ‘broad consensus’ on the candidate

Six file nominations on first day

IANS, NEW DELHI

O

n the backing of its numerical strength and widening political footprint, the BJP on Tuesday gave enough indications that it would pitch for its own choice for presidential candidate, though it said it would try to evolve a consensus among all political parties, including the Opposition. Federal Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu, speaking to reporters, appeared to indicate as much when he said: “It will be done in the true spirit of democracy going by the mandate of the people — and the mandate of people is for the government. I appeal to all to understand that spirit and try to cooperate. We will be discussing with them to try to find out what their suggestions are.” His comments came after BJP President Amit Shah held discussions with him and senior ministers Rajnath Singh and Arun Jait-

Others who filed their nominations were Anand Singh Kushwaha from Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh, A. Bala Raj from Mahbubnagar in Telangana, Saira Bano Patel from Mumbai, Abdul Hamid Patel from Mumbai, and Kondekar Vijayprakash from Pune in Maharashtra. inister for Law and Justice Ravi Shankar Prasad on Thursday said the eating habits of people cannot be controlled, but there is a need to strike a balance since a very large number of people in India revere cows. “We should not forget that a very large section of people respects and reveres cows... we can’t control the food habits of people. There has to be a balance,” Ravi Shankar Prasad told the media here. The media interaction was called to highlight the ministry’s work since May 2014.

The Law Minister referred to Article 48 of the Constitution, under the Directive Principles of State Policy, which says: The State

shall... take steps for preserving and improving the breeds, and prohibiting the slaughter, of cows and calves and other milch and draught cattle.”

On June 13, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said the Centre will not impose any restrictions on people’s choice of food. His statement came a day after a beef party was held in Aizawl in Mizoram to coincide with his visit to the northeastern state. As for a controversial central notification of rules that effectively ban the sale of cattle at cattle markets for slaughter, Ravi Shankar Prasad said Environment and Forest Minister Harsh Vardhan has already said that the Center is ready for a review of the notification. He said Prime Minister Modi has “very strongly spoken” on the issue in the past.

Modi's aversion towards the fourth estate stems from the aftermath of the Gujarat riots when he felt he could not afford to be interrogated.

Relishing ‘haleem’ during Ramadan in Hyderabad ‘Haleem’ is originally an Arabic dish, which is said to have come to India via Iran and Afghanistan

Why Modi avoids the media

Except few occasional pow wows, Modi favors a monologue with an invited audience and no questions AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

I

n another two years, Narendra Modi may well enter the Guinness Book of Records for failing to hold a press conference. In that event, he will be the first Prime Minister of a democratic country who has avoided meeting the media at a large televised gathering. It is not that he hasn’t met newsmen at all. But these meetings have been with a select few who are known to be partial towards the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) — the “North Korean TV”, as Arun Shourie, a former BJP minister, has said. Even then, the interactions weren’t live. Apart from these occasional, choreographed, generally one-sided pow wows, what Modi favors is a monologue — whether at public rallies or at indoor functions with an invited audience where no questions are allowed. Why this reticence from an otherwise voluble Prime Minister when his far more reserved predecessor held at least two major press conferences in addition to having prolonged engagements with the journalists travelling with him on his foreign trips?

As is known, Modi’s aversion towards the fourth estate stems from the aftermath of the Gujarat riots when he apparently felt that he could not afford to be interrogated closely on what transpired. Once he even walked out of a one-to-one chat show when asked about the riots. One of his first steps after becoming the Prime Minister was to dispense with the convention of journalists accompanying the PM

One of his first steps after becoming the Prime Minister was to dispense with the convention of journalists accompanying the PM when he went abroad when he went abroad. Only the official media were given the privilege. There is also a belief in the saffron camp that the so-called mainstream media, especially the English ones, harbour the Left-Liberals who look upon the BJP with a jaundiced eye and have had a special antipathy

towards Modi since the riots. Hence, the Prime Minister’s reluctance to reach out to them although the BJP does allow its spokespersons to present the party’s case before the television cameras, an unavoidable aspect of democratic functioning. One explanation for Modi’s unwillingness to take part in an exercise which is routine in a democracy is that his answers to probing questions can reveal a worldview which is alien to the narrative that has guided the country’s politics till now. Nothing exposed this difference between the BJP’s perceptions and the rest of the country’s more starkly than Atal Behari Vajpayee’s 1996 decision to put on hold the three key issues on the Hindutva agenda — the Ram temple, Article 370 of the Constitution and uniform civil code — in order to woo the “secular” parties to his side. Since Vajpayee’s time, more issues marking out the BJP’s distinctive position from that of the other parties have come to the fore. These are myth vs history, faith vs the inviolability of protected monuments, vegetarianism vs non-vegetarianism, astrology vs astronomy, and so on.

MOHAMMED SHAFEEQ HYDERABAD

B

iryani may be Hyderabad’s signature dish, but even the world-famous delicacy takes a back seat during the holy month of Ramadan in favor of ‘haleem’, a porridge-like dish made of wheat, lentils and meat. Such is the preference for ‘haleem’ that no other dish comes close in terms of popularity, taste and sale that last year fetched over Rs 5 billion. Though the mouth-watering dish is regular on the menu in Muslim weddings and is available round the year at few city hotels, it’s only during the Ramadan that it is highly in demand. Not only the Muslims, but people from other communities also eagerly await Ramadan to relish their favorite dish. Those traveling abroad or to different destinations within the country don’t forget to pick up a few packets for their loved ones.

‘Bhattis’ or brick-and-mud ovens in front of hotels across Hyderabad are a common sight during the holy month. And so are chefs engaged in the laborious process of making the sumptuous dish in large vessels cemented on the traditional ovens. They can be seen pounding the meat in vessels with large wooden poles. The entire cooking process, which takes 10 to 12 hours, is done on firewood. ‘Haleem’ is originally an Arabic dish, which is said to have come to India via Iran and Afghanistan. “The Legendary Cuisine of Persia”, a highly acclaimed cookbook, traces the origin of ‘haleem’ to the 6th century Persian king Khusrow. A chef from Yemen is said to have first prepare the dish, called “harees” or in Arab countries, for the then Nizam of Hyderabad in 1930. Subsequently, some Irani hotels started selling it here.

While ‘haleem’ was originally made with mutton or beef, it’s now available in other variants — chicken, fish, and even vegetarian.

L

aw expert Neeru Chadha has been elected a judge of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) and will be the first Indian woman to serve on the 21member court. On June 14, she won a nine-year term on the tribunal that adjudicates disputes arising over the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and agreements between countries that give it jurisdiction. The tribunal was set up in 1996 and is based in Hamburg, Germany. Chadha was the only candidate

from the Asia Pacific Group to be elected in the first round of elections where the 168 countries that are parties to UNCLOS voted. Judge P. Chandrasekhara Rao, the Indian currently on the tribunal, completes his second nineyear-term this year. He served as the President of the tribunal from 1999 to 2002. Chadha was the first woman to be the chief legal adviser to the Indian government and her career includes stints as an additional secretary in the External Affairs Ministry and a counsellor at India’s UN Mission. Indian-origin Varadkar new Irish PM IANS, DUBLIN

I

ndian-origin leader Leo Varadkar was formally elected as Ireland's new Taioseach on June 14, becoming the youngest and first openly gay Prime Minister in the majority-Catholic country. He won the Fine Gael party (United Ireland Party) leadership earlier this month. Varadkar was nominated for the position of prime minister after his predecessor Enda Kenny formally resigned. Kenny nominated Varadkar to succeed him at the start of Wednesday's parliamentary proceedings, saying that he would carry out the role with integrity

and skill. "As the country's youngest holder of this office, he speaks for a new generation of Irish women and Irish men, he represents a modern, diverse and inclusive Ireland and speaks for them like no other," Kenny told Parliament ahead of the vote.

The new ruling Fine Gael leader won 57 votes in the Irish Parliament against 50 for his nomination as premier, while some 45 parliamentarians abstained in the vote, the Independent reported. Accepting his elevation to the most powerful office in the country, the 38-year-old said: "I've been elected to lead but I promise to serve." "The government that I lead will not be one of left or right because those old divisions don't comprehend the political challenges of today.” “The government I lead will be one of the new European centre as we seek to build a republic of opportunity," he said.

Remittances by Indians working overseas up by 68.6%: UN ARUL LOUIS, UNITED NATIONS

I

ndians working overseas sent home $62.74 billion last year, an increase of 68.6 per cent in the last decade, according to a UN agency. India received the most overseas remittances last year, a report by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) issued said. The money sent by Indians overseas amounted to 3.3 per cent of India’s gross domestic product, the report said. Gulf countries were the primary destination for Indian workers going abroad, with the US as a “popular destination”. The US led

the world as the country from which the most remittances - $3.6

billion - were made, the IFAD said. Releasing the report, “Sending

Money Home: Contributing to the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), One Family at a Time”, IFAD President Gilbert F. Houngbo spoke of the impact the remittances had on improving the living standards of families in the home countries. “The small amounts of $200 or $300 that each migrant sends home make up about 60 per cent of the family’s household income, and this makes an enormous difference in their lives and the communities in which they live,” he said. More than 800 million family members are benefiting from the remittances by over 200 million

migrant workers, IFAD said. It estimated that this year one-inseven persons in the world will either send or receive a share of the $450 billion transferred globally. “Remittances are expected to remain a stable source of finance to meet the immediate needs and aspirations of millions of families around the world,” the report said. Even though the average cost of sending money home has decreased from about 10 per cent in 2008 to 7.45 per cent, it still takes chunk out of the remittances and IFAD said the UN development goals want it to be brought down further to 3 per cent by 2030.

Israel’s David Grossman wins Man Booker prize IANS, LONDON

sraeli author David Grossman won the prestigious 2017 Man Booker International prize in London for his latest novel “A Horse Walks into a Bar”. Grossman on Wednesday night beat his compatriot Amos Oz and four other contenders for the prize, which is awarded to writers of foreign language fiction translated into English, reports Efe news.

The $64,000 prize will be split equally between Grossman and the novel’s translator Jessica Cohen. The novel revolves around a stand-up comedian as he relates a traumatic moment in his life during his final show at a local club, praised by the judges as an “ambitious high-wire act of a novel”. Nick Barley, the chairman of the award’s judging panel, said the book “shines a spotlight on the effects of grief, without any hint of

rescue centers. From across London, people donated food, clothes and blankets. “It is times like this that the best of our community comes out,” the BBC quoted Bhupinder Singh, a volunteer handling the donations, as saying. “This is when you find out how good it is to live in England.” The Guardian reported that charity workers and volunteers providing aid for the affected people were part of a huge relief effort. Earlier, “Metro man” E. Sreedharan has not been given a seat on the dais. After hearing about the exclusion of Sreedharan, Chennithala and local legislator P.T.Thomas,

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has written to the Prime Minister’s office to include these

three also. But the request to include local legislator P.T. Thomas on the dais was not accepted. Modi will arrive at the Kochi international airport and will be driven to the Pathadipalam railway station to take a Kochi Metro train to Palarivattom, six kilometres away. From there he will drive to the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium to officially launch Kerala’s first metro by addressing a public meeting. He will return to Delhi after a brief meeting with the Kerala cabinet led by Vijayan. In the Kochi Metro project, which is 25 km long, trains will run for 13 km between Palarivattom and Aluva from June 19. He said the Tamil Nadu Police chief had written to his counterparts in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka to provide protection to the officials and the five trucks carrying the cows when they travel through their states. A team of officials from Tamil Nadu was attacked by cow vigilantes in Barmer in Rajasthan on the suspicion that they were smuggling the cows for slaughter. The Tamil Nadu officials had procured 50 cows and were bringing them to Tamil Nadu when they were attacked. —IANS

B Subhash Palekar has been appointed as an advisor to promote organic farming in the state.

Andhra appoints Palekar as advisor on organic farming BENGALURU: The Andhra Pradesh government appointed agriculturist and inventor of Zero Budget Natural Farming (ZBNF) Subhash Palekar as an advisor to promote organic farming in the state. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu met Palekar and appointed him as an advisor to the government, responsible for formulating policies and creating a framework to foster organic farming. According to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office, the move is part of the government’s efforts to make agriculture more profitable, reduce input cost and to encourage and promote healthy and organic farming. Naidu also requested Palekar to help build a university in Amaravati exclusively for organic

farming. For this purpose, the state government has agreed to allot 100 acres of land and Rs 100 crore as investment. The Chief Minister said that he will strive to make Andhra Pradesh 100 percent organic in the coming years and eliminate use of harmful chemicals and fertilizers in crop production. Last year, Palekar had organized a training programme for thousands of farmers from all over the state. The government aims to train 10 lakh farmers in the coming three years. The state government had last year initiated Zero-Budget Natural Farming. This initiative covered a total of 5 lakh farmers and 5 lakh hectares in 2,000 villages and 50 percent ‘mandals’ of the state. —IANS

haratiya Janata Party (BJP) President Amit Shah will meet ally Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray with the main agenda of discussions likely to centre around the upcoming presidential election, party officials said on June 15. The meeting will take place at the Thackeray residence, ‘Matoshri’ in Bandra east during the three-day visit of Shah to Mumbai to celebrate the BJP’s three years in power at the Centre under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The meeting assumes significance for the BJP as the Shiv Sena is the most vocal critic of the party, the Prime Minister and also its Maharashtra alliance partner Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. In an embarrassment for the ruling BJP, its ally Shiv Sena has virtually joined ranks with the state opposition parties demanding complete loan waiver for farmers and on other major issues confronting the state. Amit Shah is expected to mollify Uddhav Thackeray and ensure his support for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate in the upcoming presidential election.

In fact, even as the Shah-Thackeray ‘summit’ was announced on June 15, the Shiv Sena fired missives at neighboring Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who is grappling

with a farmers’ agitation. The Sena is upset over the Chouhan government’s refusal of permission to various opposition parties, including Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi and Gujarat reservations leader Hardik Patel, to meet the families of the victims killed in the recent police firing during the farmers’ agitation in Mandsaur. “This is wrong... If this continues, it could prove damaging for the country’s democracy,” the Sena opined in an edit in the party mouthpieces ‘Saamana’ and ‘Dopahar Ka Saamana’ on June 15.

CT 2017: Gear up for India-Pak final Virat Kohli has become the fastest cricketer in the world to reach 8,000 runs in ODIs in just 175 innings IANS, BIRMINGHAM

I

ndia cantered to a nine-wicket win over Bangladesh in a lopsided second semi-final of the ICC Champions Trophy at the Edgbaston Stadium here, setting up a clash with arch-rivals Pakistan in the final on June 18. Chasing 265 to win after electing to field first, the defending champions did not flinch for one moment as Rohit Sharma scored his 11th career ton (123 not out) and captain Virat Kohli notched up his 42nd fifty (96 not out) to stitch up an unbeaten 178-run partnership for the second wicket. India won the match with 59 balls to spare. While Sharma’s innings was laced with 15 fours and one six, Kohli smashed 13 boundaries.

‘I have not diverted any money to IPL’

Kohli, in the process, became the fastest cricketer in the world to reach 8,000 runs in ODIs in just 175 innings. Openers Shikhar Dhawan and Sharma were off to a rollicking start in the first six overs. Left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman was taken to the cleaners as Dhawan smacked his Indian Premier League (IPL) teammate for two back-to-back fours in his very first over, while Sharma hit three boundaries in his second over. The defending champions raced to 50 in 7.5 overs with Dhawan hitting a four down the leg side off Taskin Ahmed to re-take the top spot in the run-making charts eclipsing Tamim Iqbal. He followed it up with a huge six over square-leg. After the first 10 overs

of mandatory powerplay, India were 63/0. India were sailing smoothly when opposition skipper Mashrafe Mortaza rocked their ship, getting the prized wicket of Dhawan, who had made a quickfire (46; 34b; 7x4, 1x6). Trying to maintain his tempo, the Delhi batter came down the track and looked to hit over mid-off only to gift an easy catch to Mosaddek Hossain at point. India got to 100/1 in 16.2 overs with Kohli joining him in the middle and announcing his arrival with a Sachin Tendulkar-esque straight drive down the ground off Mustafizur. At the halfway stage, India were cruising at 164/1 needing another 101 runs for victory when Sharma hooked Mustafizur for a six to bring up his century.

Chhetri helps India win against Kyrgyzstan IANS, BENGALURU

S LONDON: Fugitive liquor baron Vijay Mallya, whom India wants extradited for facing trial in a Rs 9,000-crore bank loan default case, on Tuesday claimed that he has not diverted any of the borrowed money to the team he owned in the IPL and asked reporters to “keep dreaming about the billions of pounds” that he had allegedly diverted. Mallya, whose bail was continued till July 6, appeared before a Westminster magistrate court on Tuesday and later told media outside that he was delighted that he would be able to put up his case before a “fair and impartial” court here. kipper Sunil Chhetri scored a peach of a goal as India beat Kyrgyzstan 1-0 in their AFC Asian Cup 2019 qualifiers Group A match here at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium this week. India now have six points from two outings and a clean slate to show for. The Stephen Constantine-coached side won their first match against Myanmar 1-0 and are at top of the four-team group. In the 69th minute, Chhetri got past three defenders to find Jeje Lalpheklua who passed him back and the Bengaluru FC striker scored at one go to find the bottom corner. Cristiano Ronaldo accused of $16.5mn tax fraud IANS, MADRID

he Public Prosecutor’s Office in Madrid on Tuesday accused Real Madrid football star Cristiano Ronaldo of tax fraud totalling 14.7 million euros ($16.5 million). Ronaldo is accused or “four crimes against the Public Treasury between 2011 and 2014, which involves tax fraud of 14,768,897

euros ($16.5 million)”, the Public Prosecutor said in a statement, reports Xinhua news agency. Ronaldo is said to have taken “advantage of a company structure created in 2010 to hide income generated in Spain from his image rights from tax authorities in a ‘voluntary’ and ‘conscious’ breach of his fiscal obligations in Spain,” according to the Prosecutor’s Office. The 32-year-old, considered by

Constantine made two changes from the 2-0 friendly win over Nepal the previous week with Mohammed Rafique and Robin Singh making way for Eugeneson Lyngdoh and skipper Chhetri who was rested for that game. The tourists, ranked 32 places below India, started the game brighter but were guilty of muffing them. Ronaldo is the latest in a line of footballers to have problems with Spanish tax authorities, with Lionel Messi the highest profile player to be affected. The Barcelona star was sentenced to 21 months in jail after being found guilty of avoiding taxes on 4.16 million euros ($4.66 million) of image rights during the period 2007-2009. Ronaldo is accused of defrauding over three times more money than Messi. Other players to be accused of tax fraud include Fabio Coentrao, Falcao and Pepe.

LIVE, LOVE, CELEBRATE in and witness suchhistoric andsignificant events. My tenure in Abu Dhabi was extremely interesting and challenging at the same time. Over 2.6 million Indians live and work in UAE. Our effort was to provide services speedily and efficiently. In addition, the Embassy continuously worked with the business chambers to promote two-way trade and investment. hi : How have been your initial experiences in Chicago with the Indian community? Any particular issues that have caught your eye and you intend to focus on it. CG: I have had an excellent experience so far. I have had the opportunity to interact with various dignitaries. I have called on the Governors of Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin. In addition, I have met many Mayors, Congressmen and other elected officials. Ambassador HE Navtej Sarna visited Chicago in April and had a wide range of meetings. I have also interacted with various community bodies and members. My efforts would be to continue to work for promoting business ties between India and the US Midwest and to provide efficient services to the diaspora as well as to the American community. hi: Do you have any particular press policies both for local Indian media as well as American media here. Is there any initiative where any issues pertaining to community such as crime or international affairs that will be shared from the CG office for the community. CG: Yes. I am looking at an extremely active engagement with the local press. We are planning to have regular press interactions. During my last 4 months, at least three press interactions have taken place. Also press is being regularly invited for allour events. hi: In the recent past there was a racket that was busted where some Indians were running a fake call center calling innocent Indians in America and extorting money on the pretext that they were calling from the tax department. While it was covered widely in desi as well as American media do you think initiatives such as notices from the CG office or awareness camps on such issues can create better understanding amongst Indians who get duped by such scams. CG: Yes, I have read about the scam in the newspapers. We hope to play an active role in bringing awareness to the community members. Also I hope that the members will be more engaged with the Consulate and call or email whenever they have a doubt or there is any confusion. My officers and staff members are very prompt in answering queries. Most queries are answered within 24 hours. I have also put in place a receptionist who is answering calls from 9.00 am-5.30pm. hi: There has been an initiative to hold an open house every fortnight beginning this January and your decision to be present at the open house is commendable. There have been earlier complaints pertaining to Indian visa, OCI, Passports etc. How has been the response to this initiative? CG: The response has been tremendous so far. A number of people have been coming to the Consulate to discuss their issues. They also give us suggestions as to how we can do even better. I have met a number of people including students who have come up with interesting ideas. In fact as a result of the Open House, the number of complaints have gone down considerably! hi: What are the new steps you would be taking for the Indian community in Chicago.

CG: My effort has been to make the Consulate as approachable and friendly as possible. In addition to a dedicated receptionist for answering calls and Open house, we are planning more outreach programmes such as - “Consulate at your doorstep”. We hope to do this through a number of Consular Camps in all the nine states that come under the Consulate’s jurisdiction. So far we have already had an excellent response to several camps that we have held in St. Louis, Missouri, Detroit etc. More camps are planned over the next 3-4 months. Such camps are also being planned at business houses. We are adding some new features such as “Ask the Consul General” in which case I would be personally answering any queries and responding to any concerns of the community members. hi: There have been some complaints about the Indian policy of issuing visa through an outsourced company (Cox and Kings) Unlike other countries that allow you to apply online or through an agent, there have been issues pertaining to speedy services. The community has complaints that now the process has become lengthier as they have to go the downtown to drop and pick passports. Any reason why the local agent facility was scrapped? What would you say to the people especially those in suburbs and neighboring states discomforted by this new rule? CG: The Government of India has entered into an agreement with M/S Cox & Kings Global Services Private Limited for outsourcing of services related to visa, passports and OCI etc. at Embassy of India, Washington D.C. and five of its Consulates in USA i.e. at Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, New York and San Francisco. The Consulate does not recommend or work through any agent/ agents. The applicants are advised to submit their applications in the office of the service provider located in downtown. Those applicants who are living in suburbs or in the neighboring states may send their applications by courier or postal mail. A number of applications are received by courier/postal mail. Hence there is no need to come personally. Also, the Government of India has instituted the e-visa facility which makes obtaining a visa even simpler. The

entire process is done online. Details are available at www.indiaonlinevisa.org hi: Any new initiatives, news achievements or thoughts about the community in Chicago that you may want to share with us. CG: I feel extremely honored and privileged to be in Chicago where the community is so dynamic and vibrant. It is a very interesting assignment and at the same time is a huge learning experience for me. I am grateful for the support of the community members for all our endeavors. Whenever I have reached out to somebody for any suggestion or support for our activities, the response has been tremendous. I am impressed by the way in which diaspora feels connected to India and wants to give back to India. I would like to say that please treat the Consulate as your own and feel free to reach out anytime. The Indian Consulate in Chicago will be actively promoting a lot of cultural activities such as Yoga Day, Gandhi Jayanti and Guru Gobind Singh ji birth anniversary. Ms Bhushan talks about many other cultural initiatives: This year we would also be celebrating India@70 in a big way. The Consulate is collaborating with Art Institute of Chicago, Eye on India, Indo- American Heritage Museum, and Hindi Lovers Club etc. for a number of activities. In addition, we have planned Kala Utsav, which will showcase various dance forms of India. Some of the activities are as follows: 4 June 24th-3rd International Day of Yoga

Cultural emergency prevails in the country: Director Kamal

‘PSV G.....Vega’ shot in unexplored places

The denial by the I&B Ministry to exhibit three films at the 10th International Documentary Short Film Festival is shocking, says acclaimed filmmaker

emergency that is now prevailing in the country and we are facing it here,” Kamal told IANS.

Kamal said the process in this festival is that once the films are selected to be screened, then they look if the films have a censor certificate. “What we do as organizers is, then, we apply for an exemption to the Information and Broadcasting Ministry for all those films that do not have a censor certificate. In all, at the five-day festival which is starting on June 16, there are 210 films, of which around 170 films did not have the censor certificate. “We were surprised that all but these three films got the exemption,” said Kamal. He said that he has been told that this is the first time in the history of this festival that films have been denied the exemption. “Now the only way out is for the director or the producer to approach the legal system,” added Kamal.

“Kenny will be supervising the action scenes. We have already finalized locations in Abu Dhabi and some places in Europe where shooting will be done extensively. We go on the floors from the end of May,” he said.

The movie, which will also be released in Tamil, Hindi and Malayalam, has music by ShankarEhsaan-Loy. Besides, while Sabu Cyril will take care of production design, Madhie will crank the camera.

ctor Neil Nitin Mukesh, last seen on screen in an antagonist’s role in southern project Kaththi, will be seen as an antagonist again in upcoming Prabhas-starrer Telugu action thriller Saaho. “And it begins. Day 1 of Saaho,” Neil tweeted recently. In the film, being directed by Sujeeth, the Johnny Gaddar actor is said to be playing the antagonist.

Sujeeth told IANS last month that a major chunk of the film’s budget will be used on action sequences. “The scale on which it is being made, a major budget will be spent on some extravagant action scenes. Although it will be a commercial outing, we are attempting something new and I would like to keep that as a surprise element,” Sujeeth said. International stuntman Kenny Bates, popular for his work on films such as Die Hard and Transformers, has been brought on board.

CHENNAI: Director Praveen Sattaru says his upcoming Telugu action thriller PSV Garuda Vega has been shot for over a month in never before explored places in Georgia, braving extreme climatic conditions. “I made it a point to shoot in locations that haven’t been explored in any other Indian film in the past. In a marathon schedule that lasted 40 days, the cast and crew shot in the Eurasian country in rather extreme climatic conditions only because the script demanded it,” Sattaru told IANS. The film stars Rajasekhar, Pooja Kumar, Kishore and Shraddha Das. Talking about the experience of shooting in Georgia, Sattaru said: “The authorities were very supportive in issuing permissions to shoot in sensitive terrains. “The stunts team, being highly skilled, only helped matters. For about 33 days, the team had to camp in locations which are unconnected by hotels within a radius of 100 km.” Rajasekhar will be seen in a reinvented police avatar in the film. “Rajasekhar will be playing his age in this film and his role will be along the lines of his character from Magaadu, but even more serious. He sports a new look, but it has been designed keeping in mind the realistic tone of the project,” he said.

FILM REVIEW | TAMIL

‘Rangoon’: An unimaginably real familiar thriller with a lot to like

T

here’s so much to like about Gautham Karthik’s Rangoon”, despite the familiar path it takes to narrate a story of friendship, betrayal and loss. This is the kind of film where you walk out with the feeling of having watched it before — more than once — but still don’t have major complaints. It’s the kind of film that works solely because it has cracked the knack of winning over audiences with familiar content, and the whole credit goes to its director Rajkumar, a former associate of A.R. Murugadoss.

Film: “Rangoon”; Director: Rajkumar Periasamy; Cast: Gautham Karthik, Sana Makbul, Lallu, Siddique and Daniel Annie Pope; Rating: *** There have been umpteen numbers of films on friendship and betrayal, and Rangoon isn’t any different when it comes to its story and presentation. But the way it is narrated, in a gritty and taut fashion, is where it scores big, making

it a cut above the rest of the films in the same genre. The friendship between the lead characters is crackling, and the actors perform with such earnestness, you’re convinced their bond is real. Since you connect with them on an emotional level, you empathize when one among them is cheated. The story is set in north Chennai, and Rajkumar captures its milieu quite authentically. It only reminds me of another Tamil film, Madras, which was also set in a similar milieu and was unimaginably real. Set against the backdrop

of smuggling, just like Suriya-starrer Ayan, Rangoon shows us that it takes a lot of creativity to smuggle. We are shown how gold biscuits can be hidden in all sorts of things — from cylinders and statues to Mysore paks. Rangoon has its issues, especially the way it treats its heroine. Sana, unfortunately, in her debut has very little to contribute. This is the kind of story that would work wonders even without a heroine, especially if she has no better job than to look pretty on screen. — Haricharan Pudipeddi

‘Arbaaz Khan not directing Dabangg 3’ IANS, MUMBAI

B MUMBAI: Veteran actor Rishi Kapoor has called the police, fire fighters and the medics “real heroes” and added that romancing or fighting in films is no heroism. “The Real Heroes. ‘9/11’ Firefighters entered Twin Towers knowing eminent death. Now Grenfell Tower where again the braves have entered. Singing songs, romancing or fighting in films is no heroism. The real heroes are the fire fighters, police and the medics. I was no hero! Sorry!” Rishi tweeted. The 64-year-old actor’s tweet came after a major fire took place and consumed a 24-storey apartment complex in west London housing hundreds. Firefighters were alerted to the blaze at Grenfell Tower, an apartment block located in the neighborhood of Kensington, shortly after Tuesday midnight, reports Efe news. Some 200 firefighters and 40 fire trucks were deployed to the scene and emergency workers were battling to get the fire under control.

ollywood superstar Salman Khan says his brother Arbaaz does not want to direct Dabangg 3, and that they will find a “good director” for it. During a media interaction, when Salman was asked about his favorite director among the two, he said: “Since Arbaaz doesn’t want to direct, I feel Sohail is a better director

because he is more patient and with Sohail, you can improvise on things but in a similar situation, Arbaaz gets panicked and his blood pressure

starts to fluctuate. “Now we are going to start Dabangg 3, so he (Arbaaz) told me ‘Very good, but I am not going to direct it and I am

only producing it’.

‘Raabta’: The movie fails to entertain and connect

I

n one of the scenes of Raabta, liquor tycoon Zakir Merchant (Jim Sarbh) tells his love interest - Saira (Kriti Sanon), “Jab tak samajh nahi aata… be my guest.” I am sure the audience too will take him seriously and stoically gape at the screen.

Film: “Raabta”; Director: Dinesh Vijan; Cast: Sushant Singh Rajput, Kriti Sanon, Rajkummar Rao, Jim Sarbh, Varun Sharma; Rating: ** chemistry between the two and they are hooked for life. But then life is not so easy, the convoluted plot goes through formulaic tropes of an oft-seen romance, till Zakir Merchant enters their lives and turns it topsyturvy, drawing them into the web of their previous life, some 800 years ago. The problem with “Raabta” is the plot. The film looks like two distinct films put together on the

editing table. The first half of the film is devoted to the contemporary period and most of the second half has the period drama.

‘Yugpurush’-Mahatma’s Mahatma

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- ‘Yugpurush’ is a theatrical masterpiece with seven teams performing concurrently globally. Winner of the Dadasaheb Phalke Excellence Award and Transmedia Awards, it has so far conducted 550 shows in 196 days in 200 cities with some 400,000 viewers admiring it. In a world besieged by violence, self-interest, and disharmony, Mahatma Gandhi’s values stand out like a shining beacon. These values have withstood the test of time and have inspired generations of world leaders and influencers like Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, and Barack Obama. But who inspired the Mahatma? Who played a formative role in shaping young Mohandas Gandhi? Well, ‘Yugpurush’ skilfully and effortlessly weaves the story of two legends, Gandhi and Shrimad Rajchandraji in a strong and moving narrative. “Such was the man who captivated my heart in religious matters that no other man has till now” write Gandhiji in the Modern Review on June 30, 1930. In America, ‘Yugpurush’ will visit New York, New Jersey, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles and Toronto in Canada. Through the course of the year, the play will perform in India as well as overseas in the US, Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Australia, UAE, Oman, Kenya and South Africa, among other countries. ‘Yugpurush’ highlights the values of expanding one’s capacity to love and offer selflessly, respecting diversity, supporting truth, fostering trust, and building lasting communities. The play exalts Rajchandraji’s state of detachment and absolute honesty even while doing business and amid mundane worldly affairs. It brings to the forefront a powerful experience of looking within, upholding truth and fearlessness, as well as transforming character and consciousness. It has been produced under the guidance of Rajchandraji’s ardent devotee and the founder of Shrimad Rajchandra Mission Dharampur (SRMD), Pujya Gurudevshri Rakeshbhai. Pujya Gurudevshri states, “The birth and

C

life of the Great Ones are worth remembering. They awaken our latent strength and kindle the desire to become like them.” In order to cater to the huge demand for the play, seven teams are now performing the play in six different cities, simultaneously. The play is currently running in English, Gujarati, Hindi, Marathi, Bengali and Kannada and will soon release in Tamil. ‘Yugpurush’ is directed by acclaimed director Rajesh Joshi and scripted by well-known playwright Uttam Gada. The music direction is by popular composer duo Sachin–Jigar.

The play supports the cause of Shrimad Rajchandra Hospital–a new 200-bed multispecialty charity hospital for the economically underprivileged in South Gujarat. SRMD’s aim behind the year-long celebration of Shrimad Rajchandraji’s 150th birth anniversary is to spread Shrimad Rajchandraji’s values of ahimsa and satya that shaped Gandhiji’s beliefs, and to bring His spiritually uplifting teachings to the maximum number of people from all walks of life. This amazing play will be held at the Jain Center of Metropolitan Chicago on July 9.

Dispelling 10 myths about studying abroad in US BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL- The US has the largest number of international students enrolled in its universities (more than 1,000,000). Over 5% of the students studying in the US are foreign students. Universities report that the number of international students keeps growing year after year. Attending college in the US is a goal for many international high school students. We are dispelling 10 myths about Studying Abroad in the U.S. This goal can be achieved, let us show you how. 1. I need to be rich to attend college in the US. Yes, American universities can be expensive. However, sticker price does not always equal net price. There are merit-based scholarships available to international students. Also, the cost of attendance can vary greatly from private and public universities. It is often less expensive to attend a public university. 2. I do not qualify for financial aid. International students do not qualify for federal aid. However, they can often qualify for merit-based scholarships. Each university decides how they want to distribute their funds. If they want to offer international students institutional aid, they can. 3. I am fluent in English, therefore I do not need to take the TOEFL or IELTS. There is no standard application process for U.S. universities. For this reason, students must check each university’s criteria for the TOEFL/IELTS exam. Numerous universities require international students, from a country where English is not the national language, to take a language exam. Each university also sets their own passing score. 4. The TOEFL and IELTS are essentially the same. The TOEFL and IELTS exams have

C

numerous differences. The TOEFL offers only academic English. While the IELTS offers an academic option in addition to a general test. Both the TOEFL and IELTS have wide acceptance in U.S. universities. However, some colleges do have their preferences. When deciding which test to take, make sure to check with the universities you are applying to see if both tests are accepted. 5. Applying to college in the US is centralized. Things would be much simpler if this were true. The college application process varies from college to college. Each college sets their own rules, criteria, and deadlines. There is no one true “universal” application. 6. Since English is not my first language, colleges will not expect my essay to have perfect grammar. Nowadays, colleges are more competitive than ever. In order to study at a top-tier university, students must have a strong grasp of the English language and grammar. 7. The U.S. does not have very many

international students enrolled in its universities. For the 2015-2016 academic year, the number of international students at U.S. colleges exceeded 1 million, according to a recent report from the Institute of International Education, a nonprofit that works to advance international education. 8. The steps involved in applying to U.S. colleges are completely different for international and domestic students. The steps involved in applying to U.S. colleges are largely the same for international and domestic students. But, international students need to undertake a few additional steps to make up for the differences in the school curriculum, grading system, and language. The majority of the colleges in the U.S. require international students to obtain a minimum score on language tests, such as the TOEFL. As an international student, you will also need to supply the university with a certification of finances. The university wants to ensure you can afford the tuition and living expenses before you obtain a visa and move to the U.S. International students applying to

U.S. colleges may also be required to have their transcripts and/or other educational credentials assessed by an official organization. This is because the grading system used by certain schools is different from the typical 4.0 scale utilized in the U.S International Students have to determine the legal requirements associated with staying in the U.S. and apply for a student visa. 9. It is difficult to obtain a student visa. Once a student is accepted to a university, the steps are fairly straightforward. The first step for international students is to ensure the university, they are applying, is accredited by the U.S. government’s Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). Only SEVP-approved institutions can enroll students in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). After an international student has been accepted, the university will enrol them in the SEVIS system. SEVIS will provide the students with the necessary documents to apply for a US student visa. 10. As soon as I graduate, I must leave the US. Upon graduation, many international students hope to stay in the US. These students can apply for twelve months of optional practical training (OPT). This allows them to work in fields related to their areas of study while building their skill-set. The difficulty is that not just any job will do. The job must be specific to their field of study. An additional option is to pursue an advanced degree. This will extend the student visa. After the advanced degree is obtained, the student can apply for an additional twelve months of OPT. The process of finding long-term employment and receiving company sponsorship is not always easy. But, it is certainly doable. The more specific and indemand your major is, the easier the process becomes. Studying abroad in the US is a lifelong dream for many. That dream can be realized with proper planning and diligence. for info. contact: kristen@moonprep. com

New Bill bans guns for hate crime offenders BY A STAFF WRITER OS ANGLES, CA -- A new California gun measure going through legislation would ban anyone from buying a gun who has been convicted of a hate crime. As the law currently stands, people who are convicted under the violent hate crime statute can possess or acquire guns. The Assembly Bill 785, also known as The Disarm Act, wants to change what’s being seen as a loophole and is looking to, “help keep weapons out of the hands of those who have demonstrated a dangerous readiness to escalate bigotry into criminal threats and violence.” The push for this law is not something new as six other states already have a law like this in place: Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey and Oregon. The existing law only prevents criminals who’ve been convicted of certain misdemeanors from possessing guns within 10 years of conviction. Violation of this law includes imprisonment in a county jail, fine of over $1,000 or both. If this passes through legislation, then people convicted of hate crimes would be added under the existing law.

Vishwaja Muppa killed in 2012

BY A STAFF WRITER IVERHEAD, NY -- New York county officials have agreed to pay $7.5 million to settle lawsuits involving the accidental death of a 21-year-old Indian American college student during Superstorm Sandy. Stony Brook University student Vishwaja Muppa, of Edison, New Jersey, was killed and three other women were injured in the 2012 storm. Officials say a Suffolk County police car crashed into their vehicle at a darkened intersection in the hamlet of Port Jefferson Station on Long Island. The storm had knocked out the traffic light and the officer didn’t have his emergency lights on. The three women suffered severe and permanent injuries, and will also receive part of the settlement. The county legislature will decide a proposal to borrow $3 million for the settlement. Muppa was studying to become a physician. A biology major, she was described by friends as a hardworking scholar, who also worked for two years as a student assistant in the office of university president Dr. Samuel L. Stanley.

BY A STAFF WRITER ETROIT, MI -- A judge says a Detroit-area doctor and his wife can be released from jail while they face charges of female genital mutilation. Dr. Fakhruddin Attar and Farida Attar must stay in their suburban Detroit home and be electronically monitored. They have been locked up without bond since late April. An Indian American physician, Dr. Jumana Nagarwala, is charged with performing genital mutilation on two Minnesota girls in February. The government says the alleged acts occurred at Dr. Attar’s clinic with his approval. Farida Attar is accused of assisting Nagarwala. The Attars and Nagarwala belong to a Muslim sect called Dawoodi Bohra. They deny the charges and say a religious ritual was performed. In court on June 7, prosecutor Sara Woodward said Nagarwala may have performed genital mutilation on a hundred girls over the past 12 years.

These companies and city leaders, according to a press release, came together to ask the community what they can do to create a more compassionate and equitable community. Finalists were chosen by a steering committee of business and city leaders, and then the community voted on the projects they wanted to see win the grant. Soulforce Leadership, founded by Poonam Singh, trains high school students to be peace-makers and change-makers in their communities, using principles of mindfulness, compassion, and nonviolence. The organization believes that love is a real political and social strategy to bring people together and make change happen in the world.

M NY cops to go soft on minor offenses N BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK , NY -- New York City has released new rules for the police curbing the practice of bringing criminal charges against people caught drinking alcohol or urinating in public, among other minor offenses, in a shift championed by civil rights advocates. City officials hope the effort will keep tens of thousands of people out of the city’s criminal courts each year, treating the offenses in most cases as civil matters punishable by a fines or community service. The effort is also intended to prevent some immigrants from being targeted by federal agents for deportation. US President Donald Trump signed an order in January expanding the focus of immigration agents to include the removal

of immigrants charged with a crime, even before any conviction. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio has been critical of Trump’s immigration policies, and the city has often refused to cooperate with federal deportation efforts by not turning over suspects, a policy that predated Trump’s presidency. “In the civil system, there is no chance

of immigration consequences,” Sarah Solon, a deputy director for the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice said Hitherto, people caught urinating in public could end up having a criminal misdemeanor on their records and their fingerprints shared automatically with federal law enforcement agencies, including US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Some 18,000 people were detained or issued criminal summons for public urination last year. For drinking alcohol in public, that number was 90,000. The city does not record how many of those people were immigrants. The police department was obliged to come up with the new rules under the Criminal Justice Reform Act, spearheaded by City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and signed by the mayor a year ago.

Why ‘mustard oil’ may be healthy RACHEL V. THOMAS, NEW DELHI

M

ustard oil, with its ideal ratio of essential fatty acids and natural antioxidants, may be one of the healthiest edible oils, with huge benefits for the heart, experts suggest. Mustard oil, which has a pungent taste, contains about 60 per cent monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), 21 per cent polyunsaturated fats (PUFA) and about 12 per cent saturated fats. “High levels of MUFA and PUFA — also called good fats — maintain heart health and lower

bad cholesterol, while improving good cholesterol,” Reeti Kapoor, Venkateshwar Hospital, Dwarka, told IANS. Further, it also consists of six per cent of the omega-3 fatty

acids (N-3) and 15 per cent of the omega-6 (n-6) — the two essential fatty acids — in the ideal ratio of 1:2, which is a huge benefit for the heart, as it balances cholesterol levels. This, in turn, reduces triglycerides or blood fat levels, and helps in keeping the heart healthy, experts said. According to a study published recently in the Journal of Preventive Cardiology, use of mustard oil as a cooking medium reduced the chances of heart disease such as coronary artery disease (CAD) — the most common type of heart disease — by nearly 70 per cent.

NEW YORK: Several physical health conditions, including ailments such as back pain, diabetes, and heart disease, are associated with an increased risk of suicide, says a study. The findings, published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, suggest that chronic illness, even in patients with no record of mental health problems, raises suicide risk substantially. Two of the conditions — sleep disorders and HIV/AIDS — represented a greater than twofold increase, while traumatic brain injury made individuals nine times more likely to die by suicide, the study said. “Although suicide risk appears to be pervasive across most physical health conditions, prevention efforts appear to be important for patients with a traumatic brain injury, whose odds of suicide are increased nearly nine-fold,” said lead investigator Brian Ahmedani of Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Michigan.

drug that lowers blood sugar levels for people with Type 2 diabetes may also significantly help reduce the risk of both cardiovascular and kidney disease, researchers claimed. Type 2 diabetes, which affects around 450 million people worldwide, also increases the risks of stroke and heart attack. The findings, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, showed that the drug reduced the overall risk of cardiovascular disease by 14 per cent and reduced the risk of heart failure hospitalization by 33 per cent. It was also shown to have a significant impact on the progression of renal disease, as the patients were 40

ew research has revealed that checking blood sugar with a finger-stick may not help type 2 diabetes patients who do not use insulin. Type 2 diabetes is an epidemic afflicting one in 11 people in the US and for those treated with insulin, checking blood sugar with a fingerstick is an accepted practice for monitoring insulin therapy effects.

However, researchers from UNC School of Medicine found that the majority of type 2 diabetes patients are not treated with insulin. “Our study results have potential to transform current clinical practice for patients and their providers by placing a spotlight on the perennial question, ‘to test or not to test’,” said Katrina Donahue, Professor, UNC School of Medicine. fits. We found it also reduced blood pressure and led to weight loss,” said Bruce Neal, Professor at The George Institute for Global Health, New South Wales, Australia. Canagliflozin is a relatively new type of drug that works by blocking the reabsorption of sugar or glucose in the body. This results in more glucose being released in urine and a drop in glucose levels unlike other diabetes drugs that work by managing insulin levels. “This really is a game changer in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes. It not only reduces the risk of heart disease, but also provides real protection against kidney decline which affects many people with diabetes,” added Vlado Perkovic, Professor and Executive Director at The George Institute for Global Health. glucose testing at home, generally at the recommendation of a provider, despite an on-going debate about its effectiveness in controlling diabetes or improving how patients feel. “Patients and providers have to consider each unique situation as they determine whether home blood glucose monitoring is appropriate,” Donahue said. “But the study’s null results suggest that self-monitoring of blood glucose in non-insulin treated type 2 diabetes has limited utility. For majority, the costs may outweigh the benefits,” she added. The study that involved 450 patients suggested that patients living with diabetes should discuss the need for blood sugar monitoring with their health care providers.
