What led to Orlando massacre?

Afghan-origin Omar Mateen, the gunman who carried out the deadliest mass shooting on American soil, pledged allegiance to the Islamic State on Facebook message IANS, ORLANDO

US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) official said on Wednesday the massacre at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida was both hate crime and an act of terror. “This was an act of violence, born out of hate, that inflicted terror on an entire community,” said Ron Hopper, special FBI agent in charge of the case. “So I would call it a hate crime. I would call it terrorism. It’s both,” Xinhua news agency quoted Hopper as saying. On Sunday, Omar Mateen shot and killed 49 people at a popular LGBT nightclub in Orlando, Florida and injured another 53 with six remaining in critical conditions. It was the worst mass shooting in US history and the deadliest terror attack since the 9/11 in 2001.

BRIEFS: US hands over top drug lord to Mexico MEXICO CITY: US authorities handed over Mexican drug lord Hector “El Guero” Palma Salazar to officials at a border crossing city, after serving almost a decade in an American prison. Just after 5 p.m. on Wednesday evening, American agents turned over Salazar, who was released from prison in California on June 10, after completing 85 per cent of a 16-year sentence for smuggling 50 kilos of cocaine from Mexico to the US in 1995, Xinhua news agency reported. The hand over was conducted in Matamoros, across the border from Brownsville, Texas. Since then, he was in custody of immigration officials, prior to his extradition.

US Senate passes $800 mn Pakistan fund WASHINGTON: The US Senate has passed its draft of the National Defense Authorization Bill, including a provision to set up a new fund to reimburse Pakistan for its efforts in the war against terrorism. The Senate version authorized $800 million under a provision called the ‘Pakistan Security Enhancement Authorization’, Dawn online reported on Thursday. The proposal for Pakistan was passed as originally initiated.

Meanwhile, according to US TV network NBC News, Mateen’s wife had reportedly feared that Mateen was planning to attack a gay nightclub before Sunday’s massacre and pleaded with him not to commit

violence, but she did not inform the police. Authorities are considering filing criminal charges against Mateen’s wife, Noor Salman, for failing to inform the FBI what she knew before the

ORLANDO: Orlando nightclub gunman Omar Mateen visited online gay chat rooms despite expressing outrage at the sight of two men kissing and making inflammatory comments about gays, law enforcement officers said on Wednesday. Investigators do not know if he visited the chat rooms for personal reasons or for surveillance before carrying out the brutal attack early Sunday at the Pulse gay nightclub in Orlando. Days after the attack sources revealed he not only visited gay chat rooms, he also frequented the same nightclub he would eventually target. No men have come forward claiming to have had sexual contact with him.

illary Clinton won the final Democratic primary on Tuesday night as voters in Washington, D.C., delivered a resounding win to the party’s presumptive nominee, one week after she clinched the nomination. The contest marked the close of one of the longest primary fights in American history, Politico reported. Clinton’s rival Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders contested the final primary, even while acknowledging the reality of the delegates maths. However, Sanders is yet to officially concede, and on Sunday he said he would take his campaign to the Democratic convention in July.

He reiterated at a news conference Tuesday the need to change the Democratic Party, and said he would take “that fight” to the con-

Clinton, accompanied by campaign manager Robby Mook and campaign chairman John Podesta, met Sanders, who was joined by his wife Jane and campaign manager Jeff Weaver. “Sanders congratulated Secretary Clinton on the campaign she has run and said he appreciated her strong commitment to stopping Trump in the general election,” said Sanders’ spokesman Michael Briggs in a statement. “The two discussed a variety of issues where they are seeking common ground,” Briggs said.

Indian-origin man charged in scam NEW YORK: A hedge fund manager of Indian origin has been charged with participating in a stock market insider trading scam involving generic drugs that allegedly netted him at least $25 million in profits, according to US authorities. New York federal prosecutor Preet Bharara, who announced the charges on Wednesday, said that Sanjay Valvani made a deal with a former US drug regulatory official to get “highly confidential” information about pending approval of generic drug applications and used them to make trades.

attack, but no decision has been made till now. Officials said she was cooperating with the investigation. The couple has been married since 2011. They have a three-year-old son. Mateen pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) on Facebook message which he posted moments before the worst mass shooting in the US. “America and Russia stop bombing the Islamic state..I pledge my alliance to (IS leader) Abu Bakr al Baghdadi ..may Allah accept me,” Mateen posted. “The real muslims will never accept the filthy ways of the west” and “You kill innocent women and children by doing us airstrikes..now taste the Islamic state vengeance.” According to the report, Mateen also declared allegiance to IS and alBaghdadi in 911 calls he made during the attack, CBS News reported on Thursday.

he aftermath of yet another deadly mass shooting in the US, this time in Orlando city of Florida, has set off furious debate on gun control and immigration policy, putting the nation into a polarizing disarray. Armed with an AR-15 assault rifle and a handgun, Afghan-origin Omar Mateen, 29, opened fire at a gay nightclub around 2.00 a.m. on Sunday that left 49 persons and himself killed and 53 others

injured. Both the guns were purchased legally, Xinhua news agency reported. “This massacre is therefore a further reminder of how easy it is for someone to get their hands on a weapon,” said US President Barack Obama in his speech after the shooting. The manufacture for civilian use of certain semi-automatic firearms was banned in 1994. However, when the ban expired in 2004, the US Congress refused to renew it.

Will China ease up? India must play by rules if it wants NSG entry, says an influential Chinese daily IANS, BEIJING

hina could support New Delhi’s entry into the NSG if it promises to comply with stipulations over the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, an influential Chinese daily said on June 15. As India has not signed the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) or the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), it was not fit to get into the NSG, a commentary in the Global Times said. “Beijing welcomes New Delhi playing a role as a major power in global governance, including producing positive effect in a nuclear non-proliferation organization,” said the commentary by Fu Xiaoqiang of the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations. “As long as all NSG members reach a consensus over how a nonNPT member could join the NSG, and India promises to comply with stipulations over the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons while sticking to its policy of independence and self-reliance, China could support New Delhi’s path toward the club,” it said. NEWS DIGEST ‘NDA’s controversy on Ishrat is Fake’ NEW DELHI: Former Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram has accused the Narendra Modi-led NDA government of creating a “fake controversy” around the affidavits in the Ishrat Jahan case. Chidambaram, in a statement on June 16, quoted a report from The Indian Express that said Union Home Ministry official B.K. Prasad, who was probing the missing documents in the Ishrat Jahan case, tutored another official who was a witness on what will be asked to him in the probe and what his response should be.

ly known to reflect the views of the leadership of the Communist Party of China. The daily noted India’s efforts to become a member of the 48-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) and the support it has received from the US and some countries on this count. NSG membership would grant India global acceptance as a legitimate nuclear power, the commentary said. “If it joins the group, New Delhi

Target me, not Delhi’s people: Kejriwal NEW DELHI: Accusing the BJP and Congress of double standards, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal again took on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issue of Parliamentary Secretaries, saying it was “legal” when they did it and “illegal” when his government did so. “I request Modiji with folded hands,” Kejriwal told the media, literally folding his hands. “Your fight is with me. Beat me if you wish, do whatever you want to me but do not harass the people of Delhi. “Don’t try to stop the good work being done in Delhi,” he added. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader said that the 21 AAP legislators appointed as Parliamentary Secretaries by the Delhi government were its “eyes, ears and hands”. “It is with their help that our government is functioning,” he said. “These Parliamentary Secretaries put in a lot of effort behind all the

development work we do.” He also asked why the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress were questioning his government for appointing MLAs as Parliamentary Secretaries when they themselves did so when they ruled Delhi. Taking the names of former chief ministers, Kejriwal said BJP leader Sahib Singh Verma appointed a legislator, Nand Kishore Garg, as Parliamentary Secretary in 1997.

will be able to import civilian nuclear technology and fuels from the international market more conveniently while saving its domestic nuclear materials for military use. “The major goal for India’s NSG ambition is to obtain an edge over Islamabad in nuclear capabilities. “Once New Delhi gets the membership first, the nuclear balance between India and Pakistan will be broken. “As a result, Pakistan’s strategic interests will be threatened, which

will in turn shake the strategic balance in South Asia, and even cast a cloud over peace and stability in the entire Asia-Pacific region.” The Times noted that the US recognized New Delhi as a “major defence partner” during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Washington. The US was “highly likely to keep supporting New Delhi’s nuclear ambitions in order to make it a stronger power to contain China,” it added.

NEW DELHI: India said it was early to speculate on the US Senate’s rejection of a key legislative amendment that would have brought India at par with NATO members and other allies in terms of American defense sales. The National Defence Authorisation Act (NDAA) 2017 “is in the process of its formulation and it would be premature to speculate about its final content”, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup told reporters here. The NDAA is a federal law that specifies the budget and expenditures of the US defense department and determines the agencies responsible for defense.

Civil aviation policy unveiled IANS, NEW DELHI

I

ndia has unveiled its longawaited civil aviation policy with a roadmap to support 300 million air travelers in five years and steps to make flying affordable and convenient. It also recasts the controversial norms on national carriers flying abroad. Besides sops to make India a hub for aircraft maintenance, the policy proposes an all-inclusive tariff of Rs 2,500 per ticket for each flying hour to promote regional routes and facilitate more people to travel at lower costs with incentives for airport developers, operators and carriers. One of the most contentious rules that had split the domestic airlines was the 5/20 norm of fiveyear operation and a 20-aircraft fleet to qualify to fly overseas. The five-year wait is now done away with, but airlines will need 20 aircraft or fly 20 per cent on domestic routes. The new policy was approved at a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi after several years of discussions, following which a revised draft policy was

last uploaded by the civil aviation ministry on October 30 last year for comments from stakeholders. Prime Minister Modi said that the policy will “transform” the aviation sector, enhance “regional connectivity” and “greatly benefit passengers”. “#CivilAviationPolicy gives an impetus to affordability, regional connectivity, safety, infrastructure, which is vital for #TransformingIndia,” the prime minister wrote on Twitter. “The #CivilAviationPolicy approved today by the Cabinet will

transform the sector & greatly benefit passengers,” Modi added. Civil Aviation Minister Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju said it was for the first time that India has an integrated civil aviation policy that has been crafted after some 450 responses and talks with all stakeholders -- airlines, airport operators and informal consultations among ministers. As per the data furnished by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the country had seen 168.89 million domestic and over 54 million international air travellers in 2015-16.

Obama meets Dalai Lama The US president’s fourth meeting with the spiritual leader was described by Chinese media as showing Obama’s ‘mean side’ IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Barack Obama on Wednesday met the Dalai Lama privately at the White House, a session that sparked anger among Chinese officials who accuse the Tibetan spiritual leader of sponsoring a separatist movement. It was Obama’s fourth meeting with the Dalai Lama, CNN reported. Obama and the Dalai Lama met in the Map Room, on the ground floor of the White House residence. Obama and previous presidents have avoided receiving the Dalai Lama in the Oval Office, a setting typically reserved for visiting heads of state or government leaders. Josh Earnest, the White House Press Secretary, said the meeting’s venue indicated that it was a personal greeting rather than formal bilateral talks. A White House official said that

ahead of the talks, the pair discussed a range of issues, including human rights, but declined to provide any further details about the meeting, which was not open to the media. Later, the White House said the Dalai Lama extended condolences for Sunday’s terror attack in Orlan-

do, but declined to provide further details of the discussion. The Dalai Lama officially retired in 2011 from his political role as the leader of the exiled Tibetan government, but remains the head of Tibetan Buddhists. On Tuesday, a Chinese foreign

ministry spokesman sharply criticized any decision that could lend legitimacy to the Dalai Lama’s claims that Tibet should be independent from China. “The US government made solemn commitments. It acknowledges that there is only one China, that Tibet is an inseparable part of China and will never recognize the so-called Tibetan government in exile,” the spokesman, Lu Kang, said during a press briefing. Lu said the Dalai Lama is not a purely religious figure, but a political exile who has long engaged in anti-China separatist activities under the guise of religion. Chinese state-run daily, the Global Times said the meeting showed Obama’s “mean side”. “While Obama often says he welcomes China’s peaceful rise, his meetings with the Dalai Lama erode his sincerity,” the daily said in an editorial.

Bangladesh antimilitant drive surges DHAKA: At least 11,307 people have been arrested within four days of an ongoing week-long anti-militant drive in Bangladesh, police said on Tuesday. “As many as 3,115 more people were arrested on the fourth day of the drive,” Xinhua news agency quoted a senior police official as saying. Police earlier detained 8,192 people, including 119 suspected militants, in the first 72 hours of the clampdown.

two sides. “Since eruption of conflict and fire exchange at Torkham border, three Afghan Border Police personnel and two children have been killed,” Attaullah Khogiani, a provincial Afghan government spokesperson told Xinhua. He also confirmed that 23 others including a civilian sustained injuries. The official said that no firing had taken place since early Wednesday and those who have shops and business at the Torkham border town have begun shifting their establishments to safer places, and added that the situation is tense.

Paris attack victim’s father sues Twitter NEW YORK: The father of a Paris terror attack victim has filed a lawsuit against Twitter, Google and Facebook for allowing Islamic State (IS) to use their platforms to spread terrorist propaganda. The lawsuit, filed in the District Court in Northern California by Reynaldo Gonzalez, the father of Nohemi Gonzalez who was among the 130 killed in November in Paris, said these social media giants allowed IS to hire recruits, the International Business Times reported.

A spokesman for the Afghan foreign Ministry Shukib Mustaghni described the incident as “unpleasant”, and said that Afghanistan adheres to its previous accords with Pakistan and stresses on peaceful

methods and expects the Pakistani side to tackle the problem through diplomatic channels. Although Afghan ranking officials are tight lipped, Afghan media has reported the clash at Torkham.

MANILA: Philippines-based extremist group Abu Sayyaf has threatened to kill another hostage, three days after executing Canadian Robert Hall for non-payment of ransom within the deadline it had set. “We will upload a new video soon for our new ultimatum. No ransom, another beheading,” Abu Sayyaf spokesperson Abu Raami told the Daily Inquirer on Wednesday. The rebels had abducted four foreign nationals in September 2015 from a resort in Samal island and demanded around $6.4 million for each of the hostages.

Gravitational waves detected for the second time IANS, WASHINGTON

F

or the second time in history, an international team of scientists and engineers have detected gravitational waves -- ripples in the fabric of space-time -and a pair of colliding black holes. Using the twin, US-based Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) detectors, the second detection occurred on December 26 last year and is named as the “Boxing Day event” (after the holiday celebrated in Britain). LIGO’s first detection of gravita-

tional waves and merging black holes occurred on September 14, 2015 -- an event that made headlines worldwide, confirming a major prediction of Albert Einstein’s 1915 general theory of relativity. “Scientifically, these black holes are important because it shows binary black holes exist as a population, with a range of masses, forming from a range of different stars,” said Vicky Kalogera, director of Northwestern University’s centre for interdisciplinary exploration and research in astrophysics (CIERA). Gravitational waves carry information about the origins of black

holes and about the nature of gravity that cannot otherwise be obtained. This time, the gravitational waves released by the violent black hole merger resulted in a longer signal, or chirp, providing more data. The discovery, accepted for publication in the journal Physical Review Letters, was made by the international LIGO Scientific Collaboration (which includes the GEO Collaboration and the Australian Consortium for Interferometric Gravitational Astronomy) and the Virgo Collaboration using data from the two LIGO detectors.

India whitewash Zimbabwe in ODI Chasing a paltry 124 at the Harare Sports Club, the men-in-blue won with 169 balls to spare IANS, HARARE

I

ndia rode on a clinical allround effort from the youngsters to trounce Zimbabwe by 10 wickets in the third and final One-Day International (ODI) and complete a 3-0 clean sweep of the African minnows here on Wednesday. Chasing a paltry 124 at the Harare Sports Club, the men-inblue rode on the new opening combination of Lokesh Rahul and debutant Faiz Fazal to romp home with 169 balls to spare and register their third successive whitewash after 2013 and 2015. Rahul remained unbeaten on 63

off 70 deliveries while Fazal’s maiden knock of 55 came off 61 balls as the right-left duo put on an unbeaten 126 runs. Rahul bagged the man-of-the-series award. Electing to bat after winning the toss, the hosts lost six wickets within a span of just six runs to lose the plot completely against a disciplined Indian bowling line-up. Senior batsman Vusi Sibanda once again got off to a good start scoring 38, while opener Chamu Chibhabha scored 27 as the rest of the batsmen crumbled under pressure. Zimbabwe got off to a patient start as Chibhabha and Sibanda put on 36 runs for the second

wicket before Sibanda paired up with Timycen Maruma (17) to raise 34 runs for the third wicket. Comfortably placed at 104/3 by the 33rd over, Zimbabwe’s innings once again hit the roadblock as Bumrah accounted for Maruma and Elton Chigumbura off consecutive deliveries before Malcolm Waller (8) perished to a silly runout on the very first ball of the next over. The last wicket duo of Neville Madziva (10) and Donald Tiripano (2) added 13 runs before medium pacer Dhawal Kulkarni effected a run-out off his own follow-through to skittle out the hosts for 123.

Copa America since 1993, needed only a draw to advance. Instead, Peru won Group B with seven points from their three matches and Ecuador ended up in

RIO DE JANEIRO: Dunga was sacked as coach of Brazil on June 14 after the team’s early elimination from the centenary edition of the Copa America. The 52-yearDunga old and national team coordinator Gilmar Rinaldi were told of their fate during a meeting with Brazilian football confederation (CBF) president Marco Polo Del Nero in Rio de Janeiro on June 14. The favorite to replace Dunga is 55-year-old Corinthians coach Tite.

Gallese began his Man of the Match performance by stopping a Filipe Luis shot in the 12th minute. Then in the 26th minute, Gallese got his fingers to a ball heading for the left corner to keep Gabriel’s shot out of the net. A 36th minute cross to Willian resulted in his shot going over the goal; meanwhile Peru had only one quality run into the Brazil box in the first half, on which they wanted a penalty, but the cries fell on deaf ears. Christian Cueva’s free kick cleared Brazil’s defensive wall but was saved by goalkeeper Alisson in the 48th minute. The game’s decisive moment came in the 75th minute, when Andy Polo’s cross was turned into the net by Ruidiaz.

Rio Olympics: Leander Paes to partner Bopanna IANS, NEW DELHI

V

eteran tennis star Leander Paes’ dream of playing in a record seventh straight Olympics came true on June 11 after he was named with Rohan Bopanna as the Indian men’s doubles team for the Rio Olympics. Bopanna and Sania Mirza were picked for the mixed doubles while the latter will partner youngster Prarthana Thombare in women’s doubles. Ignoring Bopanna’s request for pairing him with Saketh Myneni, the All India Tennis Association (AITA) selection committee announced the decision

after its meeting here. Bopanna, who earned a direct Olympic entry based on his World No.10 ranking

in men’s doubles, on Friday took everyone by surprise when he told AITA who he preferred Myneni as

his men’s doubles partner for the Rio Games starting on August 4. In an apparent attempt to douse the fire, AITA president Anil Khanna said Bopanna respected Paes but he had his reasons to partner Myneni. “Bopanna respects Paes, he has given us his reasons why he would prefer Myneni,” Khanna told the media. “The men’s doubles team is more fortunate with Bopanna in the top 10 and Paes at 46. Our decision is merely based on the best medal prospect,” he added. Bopanna, on his part, issued a statement, reluctantly accepting the AITA’s decision.

Kudankulam is safe: Russia Kudankulam can withstand threats like tsunamis and safety has been enhanced keeping post Fukushima concerns in mind IANS, MOSCOW

T

he nuclear power plant at Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu is resilient to Fukushima-like incidents, say its Russian builders, adding that post the incident in Japan, safety measures have been enhanced. According to Vladimir A. Angelov, the Director for Projects in India for ASE, the Engineering and Construction Division of Rosatom, the Russian VVER reactor at Kudankulam can withstand threats like tsunamis and safety has been enhanced keeping post Fukushima concerns in mind. “VVER power units are much more resilient against tsunamis and are much more stronger compared to Fukushima which was built on an American design,” Angelov told IANS on the sidelines of Atomexpo here.

The Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tamil Nadu is being jointly built by India and Russia. It has faced opposition from locals over fears of radiation.

“Kudankulam takes into account the Fukushima event. We have enhanced certain technological parameters in units 3 and 4 taking into account lessons from Fukushima, specifically the seismic parameters,” Angelov pointed out. The four-unit 4,000 MW

Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant, being jointly built by India and Russia in Tirunelveli district, has faced much opposition from locals expressing fears of radiation. The meltdown at the Fukushima in 2011, raised fresh questions over the safety of nuclear power

plants, and the fall-outs in case of an accident. Angelov said that both Russia and India took the initiative for enhancing safety parameters . “The Indian side requested us to review the possibility of enhancing certain parameters and we also undertook the effort of analysing and enhancing them. So Units 3 and 4 are designed for a higher seismic, climatic and technical impact. This is an upgraded plant,” he said. Asked about the Units 1 and 2, the first of which is up and running and the second, which is likely go critical very soon, Angelov said: “We analysed the basic technical design of units 1 and 2 in terms of the lessons from Fukushima. We came to the conclusion that the units would have withstood the Fukushima incident. However, we are enforcing even stricter requirements.”

The memorandum also sought protection to Tamil Nadu fishermen and the release of arrested fishermen and their boats from Sri Lanka. The Tamil Nadu government demanded linking of river waters, setting up of a Cauvery Management Board and raising the Mullaperiyar Dam water storage level to 152 feet. undreds of people in Alappuzha and Kollam districts have been moved to relief camps following torrential monsoon rains in Kerala since the past three days, an official said on Sunday. The Southwest monsoon set in over Kerala and Lakshadweep on Wednesday. The continuous rain has led to considerable drop in temperature -- from over 40 degrees to 31 degrees Celsius, according to an IMD statement

issued here on Sunday. Alappuzha and Kollam are worst affected due to the monsoon fury. At Kuttanad, in Alappuzha district, a temporary bund that separated the backwaters from around 350 acres of paddy land, gave way. The land was being readied for a new crop. The loss is estimated at over Rs two million. Flood waters have entered more than 200 houses, forcing residents to leave. Most have gone to the homes of relatives or are at the relief camps. State Agriculture minister V.S.

Sunilkumar has asked ministry officials to visit the affected areas and prepare a report on the damage to agriculture crop. At Mankada, in Malappuram district, a major tragedy was averted as the roof of three class rooms of a state-run school collapsed following heavy rain. It being a Sunday and a holiday there was no one present. Southwest monsoon normally sets in over Kerala around June 1. It advances northwards, usually in surges, and covers the entire country around July 15.

‘UDTA PUNJAB’ SET TO FLY The Bombay High Court permitted the Punjab-based NGO, which sought the SC’s intervention to block the movie’s release, to approach the apex court at a later stage IANS, NEW DELHI/MUMBAI

he Supreme Court on June 16 refused to interfere with a Bombay High Court order allowing the release of Bollywood film “Udta Punjab”, set to hit the screens on June 17. The apex court’s vacation bench of Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel and Justice L. Gagaswara Rao said: “We are not going into the merits of the matter in the absence of the high court judgement.” After the Bombay High Court gave the drug-themed movie a green signal for release with an ‘A’ certificate, its makers had more trouble to face from some NGOs. However, the court permitted the Punjab-based non-government organization Human Rights Awareness Association, which sought the Supreme Court’s intervention to block the movie’s release, to approach the apex court

MUMBAI: Controversial film “Udta Punjab” was leaked online on June 15, two days ahead of its scheduled release in theatres. However, the film’s team managed to remove it online on war footing from torrent sites. On June 15 afternoon, it emerged that the Abhishek Chaubey directorial — which has been in news for the makers’ run-in with the censor board — was available on torrent sites for illegal download. However, soon theinks were “removed due to a copyright complaint”, the websites read. There were also reports that the leaked copy had a run-time of two hours 20 minutes. When contacted, a representative of the movie’s makers, told IANS: “No comments.”

(CBFC) order for a whopping 89 cuts to make the movie fit for release. The censors brought down that number to 13 later. Eventually, however, the Bombay High Court ruled it could release the movie with just one scene cut. Delhi-based distributor Joginder Mahajan told IANS: “It’s still doubtful whether the film will release on Friday as the matter is in the Supreme Court and the Punjab and Haryana High Court. But if it gets released, then it will definitely do good business because of the publicity it has got.” Curiosity level about the Shahid Kapoor starrer is high among fans, said Girish Johar of Zee Studios. “The film has definitely got good publicity. People are curious to see what the entire fight was all about, and because of this, ‘Udta Punjab’ is going to get a good start,” he said.

Aamir Khan goes muscular for ‘Dangal’ IANS, MUMBAI

uperstar Aamir Khan on Monday revealed his muscular look for his upcoming film “Dangal”, in which he will be seen playing the role of a young Indian wrestler named Mahaveer Phogat. Aamir used the digital platform to share an image of his muscular look. Clad in a black ganji (vest), Aamir has a beefed up look in the image clicked by photographer Avinash Gowariker.

He tweeted it and captioned it as: “Two days to go before I shoot for young Mahaveer. Avinash

Clad in a black vest, Aamir has a beefed up look in the image clicked by Avinash Gowariker Gowariker.” In the movie, the actor showcases different ages of the wrestler. He has been undergo-

ing rigorous workout sessions for this. He had to previously gain weight going from 68 kg to 93 kg in six months for his role of the ageing wrestler during the first phase of the film’s shoot. Following that, the 50-year-old actor had a weight loss target of 25 kg, before he could begin shooting for the next phase. The film will also star actors Sakshi Tanwar, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra. “Dangal”, directed by Nitesh Tiwari, is set for December 23 release.

‘TE3N’ has riveting plot with strong performances Karisma’s lawyer Kranti Sathe told IANS: “Today (Monday), the court granted them the divorce after verifying everything that was written.” The custody of their two children — daughter Samaira and son Kiaan — went to Karisma, Sathe said. Sunjay will have access to them for two weekends during vacations. When contacted, Karisma’s father and veteran actor Randhir Kapoor said: “I don’t want to comment on this. The matter is closed where we are concerned.” Karisma, who was one of the leading actors in the 1990s, broke a million hearts when she married Sunjay, a Delhi-based businessman in 2003. They filed for divorce in 2014.

S

et in Kolkata, “TE3N” is an astutely mounted, suspense filled, investigative drama. It is the closure of a kidnapping case that occurred eight years ago. Ever since John Biswas (Amitabh Bachchan) loses his eight-year-old granddaughter Angela Roy in a tragic kidnapping incident, he has been depressed and guilt ridden, for he is blamed for a crime he has no hand in. He visits the Lal Bazar police station daily, to meet the officer Sarita Sarkar (Vidya Balan), seeking an update and thus hoping for a closure. With the case not making any headway, John also hounds the then investigative officer Martin Das (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), who has now left the police force and become a priest. Once, while in the market, John

stumbles upon a little girl wearing a cap, which Angela had worn when she was kidnapped. This sets John on the search trail once again and ignites his hope for justice. But it is only when another child, Ronnie, is kidnapped and a

similar sequence of events that happened during Angela’s case follow, that the investigating officer Sarita reopens old case and seeks Martin’s help. How the trio investigates the case and solves the mystery, forms

the crux of the tale. The riveting plot and brilliant performances are what keeps hooked. Adapted from a Korean film, “Montage”, director Ribhu Dasgupta’s direction is fraught with flaws especially in his script. Overall, this leniently-paced suspense film which starts off with a swelling promise seems to have been wrapped with hurried compromises that doesn’t really leave a strong impact, except for the performances.

Diamond chokers, solitaire chains to rule wedding season Jewellery designer Renu Oberoi suggests brides to opt for diamond chokers and solitaire chains instead of regular kundans and jadaus

IANS, NEW DELHI

M

ove on from the regular kundans, jadaus and opt for diamond instead for the DDay. For smaller functions like haldi or sangeet instead of covering the forearms with a stack of bangles, brides can pick a trendy hand cuff for the wedding season this year, says an expert. Jewellery designer Renu Oberoi has shared trends that are expected to rule the wedding season in 2016: l Brides, for a while now have been gracing kundans, jadaus and uncuts as a major accessory for their wedding day. However, the designer says it’s time to move on to diamonds. Be it minimalistic jewellery or the chokers, diamonds will stand out as sheer classy on any wedding occasion.

l Diamond chokers are an appropriate option for those women who are looking for making a statement this year. One can add colour stones to give a trendy look to the jewellery. l For smaller wedding occasions,

add quirk to your bijou box. Fun flower shapes or solitaire chains will highlight your collar bone and help draw attention. l When it comes to your sangeet or haldi, instead of covering the forearms with a stack of bangles, the bride can go for a trendy hand cuff with bold detailing. Go minimal on a few occasions instead of going over the top for each ceremony to help avoid

boredom with replicas. l Oversized earring styles in classic bijoux are perfect for light occasions. They can add edginess to ensembles with a high-collared outfit and a pair of bold earrings or trendy ear cuffs. l Coloured stone maang tikas are statement pieces and a popular pick among all brides, who believe in a traditional yet classy look. Singlestranded tikas might be quite a conservative design, but that is just enough for some brides to look exceptionally elegant and fashionable.

Essential beauty tips for busy corporate brides IANS, NEW DELHI

M

ost brides today are busy with work deadlines, responsibilities and end up with barely any time to plan their wedding. But taking care of simple things, including the right diet, can do wonders for your skin, says an expert. To achieve the desired look, apart from make-up, it is important to maintain a deep-rooted skin regime that ensures long-term benefits. So one to two months before the wedding, it is

important to take care of food you consume as it can affect your skin’s texture and clarity. Sangeeta Velaskar, vice president and head, Medical Services and R&D, Kaya Limited, suggests

what you can dig into: v Eat loads of vegetables that have vitamins and are high in fibre. v Cut down on salt, sugar, caffeine and alcohol that may irritate your skin. v Getting enough water is one of the most important ways to get that glowing look, since water promotes cell turnover in your skin. Eating lots of hydrating fruits and vegetables - like melons, cucumbers, and celery - also helps your skin stay healthy and hydrated. v Omega-3 fatty acids also keep your skin glowing and hair healthy. Increase your intake of chia seeds, seafood and flaxseed to get your adequate doze of Omega-3. v Continue with your fitness routine. A good mix of cardio and weights three to four times a week will keep you in your best shape.

Weavers find virtual road to global market IANS, NEW DELHI

L

ocal weavers and designers from cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru have found a way to take ‘desi’ ethnic designs to the world — through an online portal Mirraw. The artisans say the virtual medium helps them spread their wings with good exposure in selling Indian traditional wear in the worldwide market. From bridal lehengas, flowing blingy anarkalis, elegant saris to traditional and trendy jewellery sets, Mirraw, an online market-

place, is a virtual destination for all that’s required for weddings. It brings forth a handpicked selection of ethnic materials. And ‘The Great Indian Shaadi Festival’ was one of its attempt in giving a virtual helping hand for wedding preparations. The fashion gala started on January 25, and will continue till January 29. Ravi Sampat, a Mumbaibased seller at the portal, hails the online world and virtual festivals for opening windows for local artisans to the world. He also asserts that finding the right market is often tough,

but such e-portals help them in spotting customers, who are on the lookout for authentic ‘desi’ products globally. Sampat said: “The festival is a unique campaign to showcase our work which otherwise goes unnoticed by customers in bigger cities. We feel our products

have great potential to attract buyers in metros but it is difficult to get the right market place. Such online festivals help us reach customers globally, who keep looking out for original and authentic desi products for special occasions like marriages.” Another seller, Kartik Raja echoes the same views, pointing out another advantage — smooth selling process. “Unfortunately, selling these unique products in local markets does not see many buyers and attracts low incentives. Through Mirraw.com, not only customer outreach is supported but the entire selling process is very smooth. Festivals and wedding seasons give a boost to our business with demands for products coming from other regions of the country,” said Raja.

Try gifting a perfect post-wedding date, a romantic getaway or a couple of spa sessions instead of buying banal presents that get exchanged or passed on to others. Here are gifting tips for this wedding season by Manoj Agarwal, co-founder, Giftxoxo. n The perfect post-wedding date: Usually a big fat Indian wedding takes a major toll on the couple. Gift them a perfect break like a romantic dinner date or an indulgent Sunday brunch. It will help them reconnect as a couple and relish their best memories from the wedding days over some lip-smacking gourmet delights. n A romantic getaway: Gift the newly-weds a truly pampering experience at a romantic lodge, a sprawling resort or a heritage hotel nearby. You can also opt for a beach-facing resort where the couple can be with just themselves. The idea is to facilitate an experience wherein the two can simply

let their hair down, chill by the pool or the beach, indulge in some good food and come closer together. n Couple’s rejuvenation sessions: This one’s all the rage in the west. On anniversaries, people prefer gifting their loved ones a session at a spa or a massage centre. A cou-

ple’s massage can be just the therapy that the newly-weds need. n Culinary classes for two: Gift this experience to the new couple and let them discover things about one another while exploring the finer nuances of the culinary art together. Cooking workshops or even wine tasting and pairing

experiences can be just the kind of change and excitement that newly weds seek. n Adrenaline rush for the adventure junkies: If the couple in question is the adventure-loving

variety then your task is really simple. Present them things like horse riding, jeep safaris, rock climbing expeditions, rappelling to target shooting and even hot air ballooning.

Engage your wedding guests in offbeat activities IANS, NEW DELHI

H

ow about a kite flying competition on your mehndi function or a musical housie on your sangeet? Use engaging and offbeat ideas such as these to involve guests at your wedding festivities, says an expert. Mehak S. Shahani, co-founder, WedMeGood, an online wedding planning company, has shared tips on how to make your wedding more interesting for your guests: l Kite flying on mehendi: Give ‘Patang Baazi’ (kite flying) a whole new meaning with a fun, kite flying competition between the boys and girls side. l Musical housie on your

sangeet: Ever played tambola? Well take it up a notch with musical tambola. Instead of numbers, your ticket has song names on it and as the singer croons a few lines from each song, you get up,

do a little jig and cross it off your ticket if the song exists on it. l Cocktail-mixing pre-event: Having a destination wedding with your family and friends landing a day earlier? Involve them in

the celebrations with a cocktailmixing session organised by the hotel where your guests can learn how to mix a Bloody Mary, a good Mojito, or a classy Sangria. l Lantern release: Magical, romantic and one to remember, this is perfect if you have an outdoor event. All your guests are given white paper lanterns and matchboxes. They light the lantern, wait for it to fill up with hot air and then release it into the night sky exactly at the same time. This is usually done at the reception to give the couple good wishes. l Nail art: Apart from the regular mehendi (henna) and bangles, nail art stations are now super popular at weddings.

raided hairstyles and accentuating eyes with the right make-up are wedding trends this season, reveals a survey. A pan-India survey was conducted in the form of a quiz on the Lakmé Bridal Stylist website. Here are some of the key findings of the survey: * Contrary to the popular belief, brides-to-be don’t just want to flaunt a flat tummy or a fancy hairdo at their wedding. The study confirms that 43 percent of bridesto-be in the country want to highlight their eyes, followed by glowing skin (25 percent). * We all know how important a good haircut or style is. But bridesto-be, nowadays, pay equal attention to the kind of hairdo they will

opt for on their big day. With 45 percent of the participants going for braided hairdos, it suggests that it is one of the sought-after hair styles for the wedding day. As many as 25 percent women went for classic chignon. Poker straight layers

Now plan your bridal look straight from runway MUMBAI: All brides wish to shine on their wedding day. How about getting the top wedding trends straight from the designers? Cosmetic giant Lakmé Absolute Salon in association with fashion and lifestyle webzine Fashion Most Wanted has come up with the concept called ‘The Bridal Show’ that gives brides-to-be a chance to preview trends and plan their bridal look better. The show witnesses participation of some of the promising bridal wear designers including Mumbai-

based Anisha Shetty, Spain-based Natasha Lalwani and Kolkatabased Sanchita Julka. “My designer-wear presents the contemporary bride who is ready to experiment with different looks,” Lalwani said. Shetty, whose designs are often flaunted by actress Saumya Tandon in her &TV show “Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hain”, says her collection has a variety of bridal wear that ranges from the typical traditional lehenga to western contemporary silhouettes, and even modern and royal.

were last on the list with a meagre three percent. * The most essential on the list of pre-bridal activities for brides-to-be is “get the glow back on my face” at a striking 41 percent, and “losing weight” at a 22 percent.

How to fund a dream wedding IANS, NEW DELHI

C

reate a wedding budget and check your credit score before applying for a fund for your or your loved one’s dream wedding, says an expert. Gaurav Chopra, founder, IndiaLends, an online marketplace that connects consumers (salaried and self-employed individuals) looking for low rate loans with institutional lenders looking for higher risk-adjusted returns, suggests how: n Create a budget of all the wedding expenses that you will incur for the wedding including additional costs such as honeymoon expenses and jewellery. This will prevent you from underestimating your loan amount and avoid taking additional loans to

meet miscellaneous expense needs.

n Always check your credit limit

before applying for a loan. Having a high credit score will allow you to negotiate better interest rates as well as avoid rejections that can reduce your chances of getting personal loans in future.

n If you are funding your own

wedding, apply for a joint loan with your spouse, especially if both of you are working professionals. This will improve your cumulative credit limit and increase your chances of getting a loan at a lower interest rate.

Add quirk to your wedding To ensure that your wedding is remembered for a long time, wedding planner Mehak S. Shahani suggests to add a dash of quirkiness to the decor or ‘baraat’ to evade boredom n Include nostalgia: Cutting

ake a break from traditional invitation cards and usual table top bars, and add a dash of quirkiness to the decor or ‘baraat’ to evade boredom from the celebrations. Mehak S. Shahani, co-founder, WedMeGood, an online wedding planning platform, has shared tips on how not to make your wedding boring: n Add transport to your decor: Being Indian means using symbols that define us. Whether it’s decking up the scooter, the refurbished lorry or the cute motorbike, or you could even have a bar shaped like a truck. Label it 'Sharaab di Gaddi', and you have an instant hit on your mehendi. n Pop art baraats: Take the regular baraat celebrations a step

higher with fun callouts and streamers. The hottest trend these days is a live DJ on a truck and which play alongside the baraat. Grooms arrive in style on scooties, and guests hold large callouts and shapes to make it look like a mini fair. n Passport style invitations:

Invitation cards set the tone for your wedding and they are the first way to make your wedding quirky. Whether you want a card made as a matchbox (Since you are the perfect match) or as mock boarding passes/ passports for a destination wedding, the sky is the limit.

n Quirky photobooths are all

the rage: Grab a bunch of props and create a fun backdrop for a photobooth. You can go all types of funky on photobooth backdrops — from having a life-sized crescent moon for the guests to sit in, to props with giant sunglasses and wigs.

glasses, village cots and Indian umbrellas. Swap out fancy table centerpieces for cutting chai glasses filled with rose petals, and have your mehendi in a funky village theme with charpoys and umbrellas as the decor. n Take it up a notch with an entire mela theme. Let your mehendi happen with actual ‘mela games’ like shoot the balloon, water balloon fights, or ring the bottle. It's something to keep the guests entertained with a uniquely Indian flair. n Quirky signages: Bring out your personality with fun messages and signboards to get the party started. From signs at your bar (Trust me you can dance...Vodka), to love quotes at your ‘mandap’ (Mutual Weirdness Forever), the list is endless and goes a long way to make your event personalised and fun.

Delicious food makes weddings special IANS, NEW DELHI

B

esides lavish décor and pomp celebrations, Indian weddings are known for their delicious food. No wedding is considered complete without sumptuous food. Although menu may differ as per individual tastes and traditions, you can still expect a real-life feast if you are planning to attend one. North Indian weddings usually have a heavily Mughlai spread, which means lots of paneer, creamy curries, tandoori meat, and buttery naans. These weddings also feature meat dishes like butter chicken and lamb curry. But coastal weddings, like Goan weddings will also include crab and fish curries. South Indian weddings, by contrast, are usually completely vegetarian and may have more than 100 different dishes. You can expect a bunch of

different rice dishes, like lemon rice and curd rice, in addition to daal, sabzi, dosa, idlis, and the rest of it. Any Indian wedding worth its marigolds better have an assortment of ladoos, kheer, gulabjamun, rasmalai, and jalebi. Halva

is a definite must. Moong daal halva is a universal favorite because it tends to be the most expensive, but you’ll see carrot and almond halva as well. The general rule of planning the catering for any Indian wedding is sumptuous dishes. If you eat meat, definitely include chicken dishes like butter chicken. Paneer

dishes like saag paneer and muttar paneer, along with kofta curries like aloo kofta, will make the rest of your spread extra decadent. For South Indian weddings, expect to have many different rice dishes on hand along with a variety of sabzis and maybe even dosa. Mithai like halva and barfi should not be missing from any feast.

Western wedding cakes, along with Western pastries like macarons, are becoming more and more common at weddings and will amp up your dessert table. Chat items like pani puri, samosas, dhokla, kuzhi paniyaram and masala vadai are also some of the dishes Indian weddings can’t do without.

Bridal wear

FOR DESTINATION WEDDINGS Narendra Kumar's creations are aimed at the global bridal couples, whose wedding destinations could be anywhere around the world IANS, MUMBAI

estination weddings are much in vogue nowadays, and cashing in on the fever is designer Narendra Kumar, who can give fashionistas a variety of bespoke creations for brides and grooms. Creating a versatile wardrobe for the 21st century bride and groom, Kumar offers a complete wedding wear solution for all festivities — mehndi, sangeet, cocktail ceremony, marriage and finally the reception — there is a wide choice for men and women. His designs are aimed at the global bridal couple whose wedding destinations could be anywhere around the world. The glamour of style icons like Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly

along with retro Hollywood touches, appears in the ultra chic line. For womenswear, rich fabrics forms the base of the trousseau. Velvet, silk, sheer organza, taffeta and light weight georgette with lots of lace are turned into glamorous

creations. The colours move from prominent coral and then onto pastels like lavender, mint, and darker hues like purple, midnight blue and burgundy, which can look amazing for a bridal beach soiree. Keeping the silhouettes for womenswear to the mini balloon or bubble skirt with flaps and ornate glittering bodices for dresses, Kumar also favors the peplum jackets or blouses teamed with pants or skirts. Cutwork plays a major role on the blouses, trouser hems, gowns and dresses. Giving the ethnic wear a western influence, the long feminine kurtas with ruffles floats down on elegant brides. Kumar has also visualized cool comfortable suits, jacquard jackets and bandgalas in shades of beige, light orange, mint and deeper dark masculine tones for men.

MUMBAI: The makers of popular mythological TV show “Siya Ke Ram” ordered 100 kg of marigolds to give an authentic look to an upcoming wedding sequence. According to sources from the show’s set in Hyderabad’s Ramoji Film City, the entire atmosphere on the set was extremely joyous. “It all started from this very wedding. Sita and Ram’s wedding was when these wedding festivities came into existence,” sources said. “The makers ordered marigold

and rose flowers all the way from Mithila. Not everyone knows why marigold is the one flower majorly used in wedding ceremonies,” actress Bhargavi Chirmule, who plays the role of Sita’s mother Sunaina on the show, said in a statement. “Siya Ke Ram”, which airs on Star Plus, also features Dalip Tahil and Karan Suchak. The show is a unique depiction of the epic Ramayana from Sita’s perspective.

odeyar dynasty’s adopted prince Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja will soon tie the knot with his fiancee Trishika Kumari Singh, daughter of the Dungarpur royal family of Harshavardhan Singh and Maheshri Kumari of Rajasthan. “The wedding will be solemnised on June 27 at the Amba Vilas Palace in the city as per the Hindu tradition in the presence of elders and relatives from both royal families,” a palace official told IANS. Yaduveer, 23, was adopted by mother-queen Pramoda Devi, widow of Srikanta Datta Wodeyar, the last scion of the dynasty, on February 23, 2015. He was crowned as the 27th prince of Mysuru on May 28, 2015 in the palace, about 150 km from Bengaluru. An arts graduate from Massachu-

setts University in Boston, Yaduveer was engaged to Trishkika on his return from the US late last year. “The marriage ceremonies will be conducted at the kalyana mantap in the palace, where the Wodeyar family weddings and other auspicious events like Yaduveer’s adoption and coronation were held last year,” the official said. Pramoda Devi fixed the date and auspicious time for tying the knot in consultation with ‘rajgu-

rus’ and palace priests. A grand reception will also be held in the palace a day after the wedding on May 28. Yaduveer is the grandson of princess Gayathri Devi, eldest sister of Srikantadatta and eldest daughter of the last maharaja (king) Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar. The Wodeyar dynasty ruled the erstwhile Mysuru kingdom for over seven centuries from 1399 to 1950.

once-in-a-lifetime experience for a bride requires a one-of-a-kind dress, and some of these dresses were on display in Canada’s coastal city of Vancouver at the first-ever South Asian Bridal Fashion Week. The three-day fashion show and expo, including more than 20 top international designers, on April 9, attracted hundreds of brides from Vancouver’s large South Asian community, Xinhua reported. They are here looking for unique bridal gowns from many top designers, including several from India. Jai Singh, Bridal Week organizer, said brides nowadays want everything because they are more exposed and know the Western as well as the Indian trends. So, a bride now wants everything in one garment. South Asian weddings are

famously known as massive events. Even in Canada, they can often last several days, involving hundreds — if not thousands — of guests. One local bridal gown-seller, Jas Chauhan, said such events and brides demand a customised dress

that would not be replicated or even seen elsewhere. “You want to be that one-of-akind bride. You don’t want to be that bride that you know, you walk into a reception five years down the road, maybe a couple months down

NEW DELHI: Indian designer brands like Satya Paul, Reynu Taandon, Shyamal and Bhumika, Rohit Verma, Payal Singhal, Samant Chauhan and Parvesh Jai participated in Bridal Week Vancouver (BWV) 2016. The three-day event started from April 8 at Vancouver Convention Centre. With Canada government's support, BWV had leading bridal designers and jewellers from Canada, US, Britain, United Arab Emirates (UAE), India and Pakistan showcasing their collections on the ramp, Jai Singh, the cofounder of West Coast Parvesh Jai (WCPJ) — the organising body — said.

the road, and you see another bride that has a very similar outfit,” Chauhan said. However, making a South Asian bridal gown is no easy task, said one bridal gown designer, Tina Bhardwaj, who is visiting Vancouver from New Delhi. They often require a small army of highly-skilled dressmakers and a lot of patience. “Everything that you see here is done by hand so it takes much longer than most of the other outfits. So it’s hand embroidery on a cart, and there are about six to eight people working on it, and it could go on for two weeks, it could go on for three, it could even take a month, sometimes a month and a half,” Bhardwaj said. And when it comes to the right one-of-a-kind bridal gown, there is really no limit to how much money one can spend on it, as a unique dress tends to have a unique price.

In Maharashtra, parties emerge as match-makers To win the hearts of people in drought-hit areas, the Bharatiya Janata Party and Shiv Sena have been competing with each other to arrange mass-marriages of young couples QUAID NAJMI, MUMBAI

M

aharashtra’s ruling allies, the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Shiv Sena, have evolved a new strategy to win the hearts of the agitated people of the state’s drought-hit regions - by arranging mass-marriages of young couples. Though both parties are tied in an uneasy wedlock in the Maharashtra government, they have gone their ‘separate’ ways for performing the mass marriages. On April 16, Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray played ‘godfather’ and performed the ‘kanyadaan’ for 244 couples at a lavish mass-marriage organized in Aurangabad. “The couples were 194 Hindus, eight Muslims, 42 Buddhists and mostly belong to farmers’ families from villages in the drought hit Marathwada region of the state,” local party MP Chandrakan Khaire told mediapersons. The marriages were solemnized as per their own religious customs and the Shiv Sena engaged the services of 51 brahmin priests, eight

maulvis and 11 bantejis for the couples from various communities. Maharashtra Governor C.V. Rao was the chief guest at the event in which 244 demure brides and their grinning grooms, accompa-

nied by their family members and close relatives, sought his blessings. Besides a sumptuous wedding feast, each couple was gifted a set of wedding attire, gold jewelery including a ‘mangalsutra’ and 76 household items and utensils

worth Rs.100,000, Khaire added. Last year, when Thackeray toured the drought-hit regions, he was moved by the plight of the people and decided to launch the ‘Shiv Sena Pramukh Balasaheb Thackeray Kanyadan Yojana’

which would organize the allexpenses-paid, multi-religion, mass-marriages. Not to be outdone, the BJP also organized its own independent mass-marriage ceremony on April 17 in Jalna where a whopping 551 shy couples happily tied the knot. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, BJP state President Raosaheb Danve, several cabinet ministers and top party functionaries were present on the occasion. “We received over 700 applications for the mass-marriage function, mostly from poor farmers families. From those, we shortlisted 551,” said BJP official Mukund Kulkarni. Since January, thousands of families in the drought-hit regions of Marathwada, north Maharashtra and Vidarbha have been forced to either cancel or postpone the wedding plans of their sons/daughters, mainly due to shortage of water and poor financial conditions. After visiting the drought-hit regions last year, Thackeray announced that the Shiv Sena would shoulder the responsibility of marrying off the eligible boys and girls in the affected regions.

A green marriage solemnized in Bihar to save the environment IMRAN KHAN, PATNA

T

his is one marriage in Bihar that could not have gone more green. The bride and the groom planted saplings of fruit trees, as did the rest of the wedding party. The marquee was heavily green-themed with leaves being liberally spread around. The dinner was served on plates made of green leaves and water provided in earthen mugs. And, “an hour before the marriage was solemnized, a special discussion took place on how to save

the environment and increase the green cover, a rare thing at a marriage function”, green activist Sujit Bhagat said of the event on April 20 night at Ramchanderpur Dashhara village under Mohanpur block near Patori in Samastipur district. All this to spread awareness about the need to protect the environment. The bride, Soni Kumari, and the groom, Dilip Kumar, planted the fruit tree saplings after their marriage was solemnized, as did all the guests of the bride's family. “My family gifted saplings to

each member of the marriage party,” said Krishna Kumar Rai, the bride’s father and a school teacher, who was encouraged by Bhagat to go for a green marriage. “The bride’s parents offered the saplings to their daughter in a ritual just before she left for the ceremony to spread the message to increase the green cover in her sasural (in-laws' house) also,” Bhagat said. “We served dinner (bhoj) in plates made of green leaves and used earthen mugs for drinking water to promote environment-

friendly practices,” Rai said. The green wedding couldn’t have come sooner. Hundreds of trees become soft targets for the Holi bonfires that symbolize the destruction of evil.

Forest officials say Bihar lost most of its green cover when Jharkhand was carved out of it in 2000. Undivided Bihar had 17 percent forest cover that is now down to 10 percent.

Preity Zinta confirms she is married The actress took to social media to announce her secret wedding to Gene Goodenough in Los Angeles IANS, MUMBAI

B

ollywood actress Preity Zinta has confirmed that she has given up her ‘Miss’ tag by marrying her American beau Gene Goodenough. The dimpled beauty made the announcement on her official social media pages, just days after news of her secret wedding in Los Angeles surfaced. “I was holding on the ‘Miss Tag’ rather seriously till now, until I met someone ‘Goodenough’ to give it up for. So now I join the Married Club folks. “Thank you all for your good wishes and for all

your love. Love you all. Ting! Let the Goodenough jokes begin,” Preity wrote. Last year, there were reports that she will be marrying Goodenough in January, and then around Valentine’s Day. But back then, she had declined the reports, saying that she is fed up with all the speculation about her personal life. But the virtual world went into a tizzy earlier this week over news of the “Kal Ho Naa Ho” actress’ wedding as veteran actor Kabir

Bedi congratulated her. Preity’s close friends, fashion designer and stylist Surily Goel and Sussanne Khan were also reportedly a part of the celebrations. Online memes surrounding Preity and her husband began in no time once the news of their wedding news spread. A user posted: "Actress Preity Zinta gets married to Gene Goodenough — so will she now have the epic name, Preity Goodenough?"

I

t was a hush-hush wedding affair for “Badtameez Dil” hitmaker Benny Dayal. The singer has tied the knot with model-actress girlfriend Catherine Thangam. Bollywood composer and his close friend Vishal Dadlani took to Twitter to share the news and also posted an image of himself with the newly married couple. Dadlani posted: “You guys are beautiful, Benny Dayal and Catherine Thangam! Much love and joy, always!” According to an online portal, Benny met Catherine through a

common friend. The couple followed the Hindu and Christian rituals in the marriage on June 5. Catherine, who is based in New York, has performed on several prestigious stages for a variety of artists and events in the New York City and New Jersey Area. She has trained in classical Indian dance since the age of eleven. She worked as a dancer in the 2012 crossover feature “English Vinglish”. Singers Mika Singh and Salim Merchant also took to the microblogging website to wish the cou-

ple. “Congrats bro. Benny Dayal and dear Catherine Thangam wishing you both a happy married life,” Singh posted. Merchant also shared "Best wishes and lots of love to the newly married couple Benny Dayal and dear Catherine". Benny has lent his musical touch to films like “Thalaivaa”, “Delhi-6”, “Ladies vs Ricky Bahl”, “Cocktail”, “2 States”, “Hasee Toh Phasee” and “Bang Bang!”.

ollywood actress Urmila Matondkar tied the knot on March 3 afternoon with Kashmir-based businessman and model Mohsin Akhtar Mir in a quiet ceremony. “We kept it an exclusive wedding with just family and friends at the celebration. Since our families wanted the wedding to be a lowkey affair, we mutually decided to keep it private. We seek your blessings on embarking this new journey of our lives,” Urmila, 42, said. A close friend of Urmila, designer Manish Malhotra, was the only Bollywood personality present at the wedding. Manish later tweeted: “Most beautiful bride Urmila Matondkar # Congratulations” B-Town congratulates new bride Urmila Matondkar Celebrities including veterans like Rishi Kapoor and Anupam Kher have congratulated Bollywood’s “Masoom”

actress Urmila Matondkar, who surprised the fraternity at large when she announced her marriage to Kashmir-based businessman and model Mohsin Akhtar Mir.

Urmila looked resplendent as a bride in a red and salmon pink Manish Malhotra creation, as she tied the knot with Mir in a ceremony on March 3. The wedding was duly performed as per Hindu rituals at Urmila’s residence. B-Town actors wished the couple on social media, and called Urmila the “most beautiful bride”.

MetLife Spell Bee kicks off in LA

BY A STAFF WRITER OS ANGELES, CA -- The 2016 MetLife South Asian Spelling Bee began its 12-city tour this past weekend with the first two US area events in Los Angeles and the Bay Area. With a huge turnout this year as well, the Bee attracted some top talent as well as young and new spellers that competed for the coveted prizes and titles. In the Los Angeles regional, the winners were: Ananya Vinay of Fresno (champion), Emaad Sohail of Bakersfield (1st runner-up) and Kiran Deepala of Temecula (2nd runnerup). In the Bay Area regional, the winners were: Rutvik Gandhasri of San Jose (champion), Rishik Gandhasri of San Jose (1st runner-up) and Aaryan Shah of Fremont (2nd runner-up). The event is open to children of South Asian descent up to 14 years of age. It gives them a chance to test their spelling skills in their core peer group. Interested spellers need their parent or guardian to register them online at www.southasianspellingbee.com. Organized by Touchdown Media Inc., the 2016 MetLife South Asian Spelling Bee started on June 11 and is being conducted in 12 locations across the United States. Regional level events are being held—after Los Angeles and the Bay Area—in Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Seattle, Atlanta, Charlotte, Washington, D.C. Metro, New Jersey, New York and Boston. All events will be free to attend and open to the public. Accra, Ghana was announced as the 13th center from where spellers of South Asian descent will qualify for the finals. “For the past eight years, the Bee has consistently provided a firm platform for the community to come together and hone their craft. It has become a family activity that contributes toward the overall development of the child,” said Rahul Walia, founder of the South Asian Spelling Bee and CEO of Touchdown Media Inc. The top two spellers of each regional competition will advance to the finals to be held in New Jersey in August. As in previous years, MetLife has once again funded the $10,000 champion’s grand prize that will be awarded to the winner at the finals. This year, the Bee is proudly presented by Britannia. BY A STAFF WRITER S Marine Corps veteran Imran Yousuf with roots in India saved the lives of more than 60 people as gunman Omar Mateen killed 50 people and injured more than 53 others at the Pulse night-club in Orlando, Florida in the wee hours of June 12. Christina Yousuf, Imran’s aunt, told journalists: “He did not act just for himself; he saved the lives of so many people. We are very proud of him. He is a hero.” New York native Imran Yousuf, who had returned from military service in April after a serving tour of duty in Afghanistan, had started to work at Pulse, a gay night-club, just one month before the attack, the worst incident of mass violence in US history. At about 1:45 on June 12 morning, just after the last call at the club, which was celebrating “Latin Night,” Yousuf heard shots ringing out and rushed to the rescue of screaming clubbers. The Yousufs emigrated from India to Guyana four generations ago. Yousuf’s paternal grandfather is Muslim, and his grandmother is Hindu, so his father Rasheed is a mix of both ethnicities. He was last assigned to 3rd Marine Logistics Group. His military awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Korean Defense Service Medal and Afghanistan Campaign Medal.

Jains decry Orlando nightclub shooting BY A STAFF WRITER H I C AG O , I L - - T h e Federation of Jain Associations in North America (JAINA) representing more than 150,000 Jains has condemned the nightclub shooting in Orlando which left 50 people dead on June 12. The 29-year-old shooter took hostages and opened fire inside an Orlando nightclub at around 2 am on a Sunday. “We are deeply saddened by this sudden loss and urge people to remain calm. This is really tragic and sad. Reverence for all life forms is the essence of Jain teaching. This is a time for prayers and efforts to stop such senseless violence in our nation”, said a JAINA release. “Jainism holds that the taking of any life is a cardinal sin and we reiterate that nothing can ever justify terrorism and murder. We pray for the speedy recovery of the injured and offer our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims”. The Jain Society of Metropolitan Washington, along with other Jain community associations, has also announced that it will hold a prayer vigil for the victims.

CA may go soft on undocumented BY A STAFF WRITER immigrants

C

Ca Gov. Jerry Brown

ALIFORNIA -- Gov. Jerry Brown has signed a legislation that could make California the first state in the country to allow undocumented immigrants to purchase Obamacare coverage. The legislation directs California to negotiate a waiver with the federal government to expand coverage to a population that was intentionally carved out from Obamacare during the law’s drafting. The California proposal is sure to receive strong opposition from antiimmigration forces and could reignite a fierce health reform controversy in the Obama administration’s final months. If the federal government approves the waiver, undocumented immigrants in California would be able to purchase exchange plans but couldn’t receive the law’s insurance subsidies. Adults still wouldn’t be eligible for expanded Medicaid coverage under Obamacare.

Dublin literary award for Akhil Sharma BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- Indian American author Akhil Sharma became the proud recipient of the prestigious International Dublin Literary Award on June 9, for his semiautobiographical novel “Family Life.” The win comes with a cash prize of 100,000 euros, the world’s largest prize for a single novel published in English. Sharma, who also won the 40,000 pound Folio Prize last year for “Family Life,” which traces the journey of a family that emigrates from Delhi to New York, where one brother is left severely brain-damaged after a tragedy

N

strikes. Sharma was named the winner from an initial list of 160 nominations by a panel of judges, including novelists Ian Sansom, Juan Pablo Villalobos and Carlo Gébler. Akhil Sharma “I don’t believe that a prize means it’s the best book. All a prize means is that it is the book which has won a prize, that it’s the one judges agreed on. But it’s a great honor – it’s a

prize I’ve known about for decades, and I admire the books that have won,” he s aid. After spending almost 13 years writing the book, which he described as “a nightmare – like chewing stones, chewing gravel,” Sharma now plans to use some of that prize money to set up a scholarship in his brother’s name in India, to help young women go to school. “Family Life” was nominated by the India International Centre Library, New Delhi, and by the Jacksonville Public Library in the US. The report added that Sharma was now working on a collection of short stories, and hopes to complete it by the end of the year.

Greater Atlanta Bengalis celebrate Milan Mela BY A STAFF WRITER he Bengali Association of Greater Atlanta (BAGA) organized the Milan Mela – a day-long grand festival of food, shopping, fun, dance, and drama on June 4 at the Berkmar High School. BAGA, a non-profit organization that promotes cultural, charitable, educational, and literary activities in Greater Atlanta, is a volunteer-run, non-political organization which conducts charitable, social, religious and philanthropic activities throughout the year. The mission of BAGA is to create an environment of mutual goodwill between immigrant Bengalis and other local and regional organizations in Georgia and neighboring states. As part of that mission, the Milan Mela 2016 was organized as a flagship event to demonstrate the Indian culture, creativity and heritage among the Indian-American diaspora, and encourage cooperation among various Indian American organizations. The program began at the Berkamar High School cafeteria which was decorated with stalls selling Indian snacks, jewelry, clothing, and others. Several programs were rendered by various schools like Chonde Anonde, Life Martial Arts; Dolonchapa, Surabhi School of Music; Bihu Dance, Kadama Dance Academy; Kathak from Nritya Natya Kala Bharti; Deeksha School of Performing Arts; Kids Zumba and Street Skit. Man faces apparent hate crime against Indian cabbie

David Charles Criner

BY A STAFF WRITER ALO ALTO, CA -- A 52-year-old Palo Alto man is facing hate crime, strong-arm robbery and hit-and-run charges after he lost his temper over a parking dispute with an Indian taxi driver and started yelling racial slurs at the man. The incident took place on May 27 when David Charles Cirner parked his black 2015 Toyota Camry in two spaces at a parking lot on Urban Lane, just south of University Circle in Palo Alto, the police said. The victim, a man in his 40s from India, pulled up behind Cirner in a 2005 Ford Crown Victoria taxi cab and asked Cirner to move his car into one spot so he could park. That’s when Cirner shouted racial epithets and the man returned to his cab. Then Cirner got out of his car and tried to punch the victim from the passenger side door of the taxi while continuing to shout slurs. The victim took out his phone to take a picture of his attacker, prompting Cirner to move to the driver’s side window and punch the man in the jaw. Then he snatched the phone out of the victim’s hand and threw the device at the man’s head, cracking the screen. Cirner went back into his car and backed twice into the cab while trying to reverse out of the spot before jumping a curb and driving west on University Circle. One of the two eye-witnesses called the police who said Cirner was found a short time later. The victim did not need medical attention, but the police said he complained of jaw pain. Both cars had minor damage from the incident. Cirner was booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail on suspicion of felony robbery for taking the victim’s phone. He was also booked on suspicion of two misdemeanor counts of hate crimes for the physical assault and damaging the personal property, along with misdemeanor hit-and-run.

Teen tourist rescued from Hudson river BY A STAFF WRITER OVERNORS ISLAND, NY -- A teen tourist standing on a dock to get a view of New York Harbor had to be rescued after a section of wood he stepped on broke free and he was swept miles out into New York Harbor. ‘Threatened’ BA jet found to be safe

BY A STAFF WRITER E WA R K , N J - - A n unspecified threat to an arriving British Airways flight forced the evacuation of the plane at Newark Liberty Airport last week but no suspicious items were found in the plane or in passengers’ luggage. The plane carrying 206 passengers and 13 crew members arrived from London at 1 pm and was taken to a remote area of the airport, where a canine team conducted a search of the cabin and cargo area. Passengers said they weren’t aware of the threat until they landed. “The entire flight down, nobody knew anything until we were already on the ground and there,” said Sean Fitzgerald, a passenger from New Jersey. “That’s when the pilot came over the intercom and told us what was going on, and he basically said there was a threat that was called in and they had to do some security measures.” Passengers disembarked and stood on the tarmac as their bags were checked, 15 people at a time, said Caroline Stafford, a passenger from London. “It was really terrifying but at least there were police cars waiting for us,” Stafford said. “They knew about it so the security measures were in place when we got there.” British Airways PLC is based in Hounslow, England, and is owned by Consolidated Airlines Group S.A. It didn’t comment directly on the incident but said the safety of its passengers and crew is its top priority.
