‘Trump incited violence’
IN BRIEFS Hillary Clinton ‘short-circuited’ WASHINGTON: Republican Party nominee Donald Trump attacked Democratic rival Hillary Clinton's character by suggesting that the former Secretary of State was not mentally fit to be President. "She took a short-circuit in the brain. She's got problems," CNN quoted Trump as saying on Saturday night at a campaign event in New Hampshire. "Honestly, I don't think she's all there," he added.

D
emocratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton said that her Republican rival, Donald Trump incited violence when he said gun rights supporters could stop her from winning. "Words matter, my friends. And if you are running to be president or you are president of the US, words can have tremendous consequences," the former US secretary of state said while addressing a campaign rally in Des Moines, Iowa, this week. "Yesterday, we witnessed the latest in a long line of casual comments from Donald Trump that crossed the line. ...Every single one of these incidences shows us that Donald Trump simply does not have the temperament to be president and commander in chief of the US," she said. Clinton insisted that this election cycle is not "normal", adding
US urges closer India-Pak ties WASHINGTON: The US has called for closer cooperation between India and Pakistan in the fight against terrorism, amid fresh tension between the two South Asian neighbours over “glorifying terrorism.” The remarks by the US State Department came as Home Minister Rajnath Singh asked Islamabad not to “glorify or patronise” terrorists, in response to Pakistan describing a killed pro-Pakistani Kashmiri rebel commander as a “martyr”. “We encourage regional dialogue regarding counterterrorism efforts. We advocate for closer cooperation between India and Pakistan to deal with terrorist threats in both the countries,” US State Department spokesperson Mark Toner said during a daily briefing. — IANS

Obama is 'founder of IS': Trump WASHINGTON: Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has said that President Barack Obama is "the founder" of the Islamic State (IS) terror group. During a campaign rally in Florida, Trump criticized Obama's counter-terrorism strategy and said he was "the founder of IS" and that his rival in the presidential race, Hillary Clinton, is the "co-founder" of this terrorist group, EFE news reported. "IS is honoring President Obama. He is the founder of IS. And I would say the co-founder is

crooked Hillary Clinton," said Trump while rally-goers cheered 'Lock her up!' directed at Clinton. Trump criticized that Obama has refused using the term "radical Islamic terrorism" to refer to the attacks in Orlando, Florida and San Bernardino, California. a remark that has been interpreted by broad groups as a call to use violence. Trump had said that Clinton, if elected, would "abolish" the Second Amendment to the Constitution, which establishes the right to "keep and bear arms". Those comments immediately sparked a firestorm of criticism of Trump both on Twitter and in the mainline communications media, and particularly among Democratic sectors, that the magnate had, in effect, issued a veiled call for violence against the former first lady.
WASHINGTON: A muslim woman in the US was fired from her new job at a dental clinic for wearing a hijab to work. Najaf Khan was hired as a dental assistant at Fair Oaks Dental Care in Fairfax County last week. She did not wear the hijab at her interview or on the first two days of employment. "I was really upset. The day that it happened, I was devastated," Khan was quoted as saying.
Now message Obama on Facebook WASHINGTON: Want to convey your message to US President Barack Obama? Here is your chance online. The White House has announced that people can now send Obama a note via Facebook Messenger the same way they message their friends. To send him a note, go to Facebook.com/WhiteHouse or find the White House on the Messenger app to start a thread with the President's new chat bot.
50 Republican security experts slam Trump IANS, WASHINGTON
F
ifty prominent Republican national security experts have signed a letter denouncing Donald Trump’s presidential candidacy and pledging not to vote for him. “We are convinced that in the Oval Office, he would be the most reckless President in American history,” CNN reported citing the letter that was issued this week. Its signatories include former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and National Security Agency Director Michael Hayden, former Director of National Intelligence and Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte and Eric Edelman, who was former Vice President Dick Cheney's national security adviser and has worked closely with Michele Flournoy — a candidate for secretary of defecse in a

prospective Clinton administration — to forge a centrist group of defence experts on key military issues. The letter also includes two Homeland Security secretaries under former President George W. Bush, Tom Ridge and Michael
Chertoff, and Robert Zoellick, a former World Bank president, US trade representative and deputy secretary of state. Trump's campaign responded with a statement from Trump denouncing the signatories as people who deserve the "blame for
making the world such a dangerous place", CNN reported. Many of the same leaders wrote an open letter in March during the Republican primaries condemning Trump and pledging to oppose his candidacy, at a time when other party candidates remained in the race. The new letter acknowledged that many Americans "have doubts about (Democratic nominee) Hillary Clinton, as do many of us." "But Donald Trump is not the answer to America's daunting challenges and to this crucial election," CNN quoted the letter as saying. In the letter, the group warned Trump "lacks the temperament to be president". The letter was drafted by John Bellinger, a former State Department legal advisor to then-Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, with edits from Bob Blackwill, a former George H.W. Bush White House adviser.

T
he first 1,000 MW unit of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) built with Russian equipment was dedicated to the nation this week, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying this marked the start of Indo-Russian collaboration in the nuclear energy field and that bigger atomic power units would be built. Speaking on the occasion, Modi said the successful completion of the first unit at Kudankulam is not just another fine example of the strength of the special and privileged strategic partnership between the two countries. “It is also a celebration of our abiding friendship. In years ahead, we are determined to pursue an ambitious agenda of nuclear power generation. In our journey of cooperation, we plan to build a series of bigger nuclear power units,” Modi added. He said five more 1,000 MW units would be built at Kudankulam with Russian partnership. Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa jointly dedicated to the nation the first 1,000 MW unit of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP). The dedication happened via video conferencing with Modi in New Delhi, Putin in Moscow and Jayalalithaa in Chennai. The KNPP is located in Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu, around 650 km from here. “The story of human develop-

PM holds all-party meet on Kashmir NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 12 attended an all-party meeting called to discuss a political solution in Kashmir. The opposition wanted the government to detail at the meeting a political road-map to resolve the crisis in Kashmir, where over 50 people have been killed in clashes between protesters and security forces and more than 5000 are injured in the last month, media reported.
ment has been of wide spread technological advancement and growing economic prosperity. But, as we all know, it has not been without burden on our environment,”

Before both houses adjourned for the meeting, the Lok Sabha unanimously passed a resolution on Kashmir to restore the confidence of the people and the youth of the state. The Rajya Sabha had on Tuesday unanimously adopted a resolution on Kashmir after a day-long debate. The Valley has been under curfew since July 8 after the killing of Burhan Wani, a 22-year-old Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist.
Modi said. Modi said he has a vision for India achieving economic development respectful of Mother Earth. He said the Kudankulam
nuclear power plant is part of India’s plan to scale up its clean energy and also signals the commitment to build pathways of partnership for green growth. Modi said the success of the project demonstrates the common resolve to grow the Indo-Russian relationship in new dimensions. The Indian Prime Minister said the nuclear plant demonstrates the common resolve to keep the ties between India and Russia firm and steady. “Above all, it showcases your personal commitment, consistent support and strong leadership in transforming the substance and character of our relationship. The people of India associate naturally and with great ease with the people of your great country,” Modi told Putin.
BRIEFS BJP Dalit leaders to counter opposition NEW DELHI: The BJP has decided to aggressively counter the Opposition’s onslaught over the recent string of atrocities against Dalits in various parts of the country to restore its image among the community. A meeting of BJP’s Dalit union ministers, MPs and party’s office bearers of Scheduled Caste morchas at the Centre and states was held here on Tuesday at the Gujarat Bhawan to decide its strategy on the Dalit issue. The meeting was headed by BJP’s General Secretary (Organisation) Ramlal and SC morcha in charge Bhupendra Yadav. RSS leader Krishna Gopal was also supposed to attend the meeting but he gave a miss in the last minute, sources said. According to sources, all the Dalit leaders were asked to counter the Opposition’s onslaught over the issue aggressively. The leaders have also been asked to convey the message to the community about the vote bank politics of Opposition parties.
Ban on registering diesel vehicles lifted NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on August 12 said that all diesel vehicles with engine capacity of 2,000 cc or above can now be registered in the National Capital Region subject to depositing one percent of the ex-showroom price of the car with the Central Pollution Control Board. Lifting it's December 16, 2015, order prohibiting the registration of diesel cars and vehicles with engine capacity of 2,000 cc and above, the bench of Chief Justice T.S Thakur, Justice A.K.Sikri and Justice R.Banumathi said that the registration of cars would take place only on the production of payment proof. — IANS
Modi protects Dalits, punishment for fake ‘gau rakshaks’ IANS, HYDERABAD
P
rime Minister Narendra Modi has called for protecting Dalits and for isolating and punishing fake “gau rakshaks” (cow protectors), saying they were destroying the country. On his maiden visit to Telangana, Modi sent out clear messages during his speeches at two different platforms. Making it clear that caste discrimination will not be allowed, he asked BJP workers to protect Dalits and asked states to act tough against fake cow vigilantes. Addressing a meeting of BJP’s booth-level workers of Telangana at L.B. Stadium here, he said that if the country has to progress,

peace, unity and harmony can’t be neglected. He also called for putting an end to politicising the caste issue and
alleged that some parties which considered Dalits as their vote bank and afraid of the initiatives taken by his government, were try-
ing to raise such issues by somehow influencing Dalits. “I want to tell all such people, if you want to attack, attack me, not my Dalit brothers. If you want to shoot, shoot me, not my Dalit brothers,” Modi said without naming any party. “Sometimes some incidents come to light which make heads hang in shame,” he said and described such incidents as sin against humanity. His remarks were in an obvious reference to the flogging of four Dalits by cow vigilantes in Gujarat’s Una town on July 11. “Is there any reason that we treat our Dalit brothers this way. What right we have to make these sections suffer when they are sufferings for centuries,” he asked.
Terming caste discrimination as a social problem, Modi said it was his request to all those who want a solution to give up politics of dividing the society. “This is a social problem. The more we politicize it, the more it gets complicated.” Earlier, in his speech at a public meeting at Gajwel in Medak district, Modi called for isolating and punishing fake “gau rakshaks, saying they were out to destroy the social fabric. Addressing the meeting after inaugurating the state’s drinking water programme “Mission Bhagiratha” and launching other projects, he said India is a county full of diversities, different values and traditions and protecting its “unity and integrity is our prime responsibility”.

Indian population growth dependent on development
There is little evidence to link religion and fertility rates, conflict-ridden states and countries with lower female empowerment reporting higher population growth rates SHREYA SHAH, NEW DELHI
F
ertility rates in India are more closely related to education levels and the socioeconomic development within a state, than to religious beliefs, according to an IndiaSpend analysis of government data and research evidence. The evidence we analyze shows that richer families, states with better health facilities and higher female literacy have lower fertility rates in India. Globally, there is little evidence to link religion and fertility rates, with poorer, conflict-ridden states and countries with lower female empowerment reporting higher population growth rates. When the office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India released fertility rates for the Indian population last year, the conversation was hijacked by the difference in population growth rates across religions. Several newspapers emphasized that the data showed that Muslim women had higher fertility rates than non-Muslims, and that the percentage of Muslims in the population was steadily growing. This implicit suggestion that Muslims have more children than
other religious communities missed data that shows how population growth rates and the Total Fertility Rate (TFR) vary widely between India’s states. The TFR seems more closely related to per capita income, healthcare and other basic facilities in that state. Development and fertility: The case of Kerala and UP Compare, for instance, Kerala
and Uttar Pradesh (UP). In 2011, the TFR of Uttar Pradesh, at 3.3, was higher than the Indian average of 2.4, and higher than the TFR in Kerala, at 1.8, according to census data. The Muslim population in Uttar Pradesh increased 25.19 per cent, while the Muslim population in Kerala increased 12.83 per cent between 2001 and 2011. Over the same period, the Hindu population
increased 18.9 per cent in Uttar Pradesh and 2.8 per cent in Kerala. The higher growth rates of Muslims in northern states are “more or less part of a northern culture than a Muslim culture”, N.C. Saxena, the former secretary of the Planning Commission of India, said in an interview to The Wire, a nonprofit journalism portal. The states with the highest fertil-
ity rates in India are all in north and central India -- Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan (TFR 2.9), Jharkhand (2.8), and Chhattisgarh. These overall fertility rates seem more related to the state’s development. For instance, Kerala has a literacy rate of 93.9 per cent, compared to 69.7 per cent in Uttar Pradesh in 2011. In the same year, 99.7 per cent of mothers in Kerala received medical attention at delivery compared to 48.4 per cent of mothers in Uttar Pradesh. Besides, 74.9 per cent of women were above the age of 21 in Kerala at marriage, compared to only 47.6 per cent in Uttar Pradesh. Another way to interpret population growth rates is through the difference in poor and rich states. Empowered Action Group (EAG) states, which include the poorest in India --Rajasthan, UP, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh — have higher population growth. Between 2001 and 2011, the population of EAG states grew 21 per cent compared to 15 per cent for the rest of India. Still, decadal population growth rates in even EAG states have fallen when compared to the decadal growth rate of 24.99 per cent between 1991 and 2001.
Governance is about people, not Arvind Kejriwal The Delhi High Court, which the AAP government should have never approached in the first place to settle a constitutional row, turned democracy upside down M.R. NARAYAN SWAMY, NEW DELHI
I
t is a remarkable commentary on the state of the nation that the Delhi High Court’s debatable decision giving the Lt Governor the primary say in the affairs of the Indian capital was portrayed as a blow to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Since the AAP leader can never be the Chief Minister of Delhi for ever (in as much as Narendra Modi cannot rule India for eternity), how can the court verdict be a setback to Kejriwal? True, Kejriwal is a passionate advocate of full statehood for Delhi. But he is hardly saying anything new. It is a demand both the BJP and the Congress have raised for decades. So the court decision, if anything, was a blow to the people of Delhi and their desire to be
A still of Arvind Kejriwal, Chief Minister of Delhi.
governed by a system where elected representatives are the final decision makers and where the multiplicity of authority that bedevils the city ends.
Instead, the Delhi High Court, which the AAP government should have never approached in the first place to settle a constitutional row, turned democracy upside down. In
its wisdom, not easily understood on the street, a two-judge bench ruled that the Lt Governor — a post now held by Najeeb Jung — will be the final arbiter of mass destiny in Delhi. It is another matter that the ruling has given Jung the audacity to say what no one in a serious democracy would even contemplate: Since I am the boss, we can do away with the Delhi Assembly! Delhi’s administrative predicament is well known but it needs some reiteration. For long just a Union Territory, Delhi became the National Capital Territory with a state assembly in 1993. Since then, Delhi has been governed by four institutions: an elected Delhi government, the Lt Governor (a central government appointee), the elected Municipal Corporation (controlled by the Home Ministry and now split into three wings)
and the Delhi Development Authority (reporting to the Urban Development Ministry). We also have the New Delhi Municipal Council and the Delhi Cantonment Board. To worsen the situation, the physical boundary of the Delhi government and the civic bodies are co-terminus. Further, the Lt Governor gets to be in charge of law and order, police as well as land. The High Court has now given the entire city on a platter to Jung! Nothing can be more undemocratic besides being impractical. Where I live, our neighbours and I have at various times sought out our previous MLAs from both the Congress and BJP over civic issues. I have not met the current MLA, from AAP, but the Residents Welfare Association interacts with him routinely.

P
akistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif told the National Assembly on Wednesday that his government will pursue the fight against terrorism with more vigor, two days after a suicide bomber killed at least 74 people in the southwestern city of Quetta. Islamic State and a breakaway faction of the Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack on August 8 that also prompted high level security meetings to explore ways to counter the threat by terrorists who are now killing civilians. Sarfaraz Bugti, Home Minister of Balochistan, of which Quetta is the capital, claimed the involvement of a “foreign hand” to destabilize the natural resources-rich province. The Prime Minister,

Thousands of people demonstrated in cities of Oromia.
Julian Assange to be questioned LONDON: Wikileaks founder Julian Assange will be questioned by Swedish prosecutors inside the Ecuadorian embassy in London, a media report said on Thursday. The Ecuadorian attorney general delivered a document agreeing to a request by the Swedish prosecutor to question Assange over a rape allegation, which he denies, The Guardian reported. “In the coming weeks, a date will be established for the proceedings to be held at the embassy of Ecuador in the UK,” a statement issued in Ecuador said. Assange has been living inside the embassy for more than four years and has been granted political asylum by Ecuador.

ISLAMABAD: Twelve people were injured on Thursday in a roadside blast near a hospital in Pakistan’s Quetta city, police said. “Balochistan Federal Shariat Court Judge Zahoor Shawani was the target in the attack,” the Nation daily quoted Balochistan Home Minister Sarfaraz Bugti as saying. The explosion comes just after a suicide bombing at the emergency ward of Quetta’s Civil Hospital on Monday that killed over 70 people, mostly lawyers and journalists.
Brazil senate for impeachment trial IANS, RIO DE JANEIRO
T
he Brazilian Senate has green-signalled the impeachment trial of suspended President Dilma Rousseff. At the end of a lengthy session on Tuesday that lasted over 15 hours, senators voted 59 to 21 to approve the trial, surpassing the 41 votes needed for the trial to commence, Xinhua news agency reported. Rousseff was accused of committing fiscal fraud while trying to balance the 2014 budget. She has not yet made any comments on the Senate’s decision. During the session, senators pressed their respective points for and against Rousseff’s

impeachment in lengthy speeches. The opposition said the President committed a crime of financial irresponsibility by resorting to fiscal
manoeuver to balance the budget, which is written in the country’s law as punishable by impeachment. They blamed Rousseff’s decisions for the current state of the Brazilian economy which is currently facing a recession with no end in sight while unemployment and inflation are on the rise. Rousseff’s supporters said the fiscal maneuvres to which she resorted did not constitute crime of financial irresponsibility and were perfectly legal decisions at the time. The president herself denounced the impeachment process as a plot of the office of Vice President Michel Temer, whose difficult relationship with Rousseff turned into full-blown hostility.
Shah, and other lawmakers who spoke on the occasion said the Quetta carnage has shocked the whole nation and underlined the need for effective implementation of the anti-terror National Action Plan. Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali informed parliament about the progress in investigation into the attack. “We have found some clues regarding the terrorist bombing that have been shared with the Prime Minister,” he said. “I am confident to reach the perpetrators soon,” the minister said, adding that the terrorists conducted the blast in a very scientific manner. A suicide bomber detonated his vest when lawyers gathered outside the city’s main hospital to receive the dead body of their president who was killed by a militant group just hours earlier. Police say over 20 lawyers were among those killed in the attack.

IS uses Hollywood-style videos to lure people IANS, LONDON,
P
ropaganda videos featuring rap music and Hollywoodstyle editing were some of the tactics the Islamic State (IS) terrorists are using to lure individuals to join the militant group, a media report said on Thursday. According to French authorities, a “super jihadi” from France has recruited at least 80 per cent of the IS’s French-speaking terrorists through Hollywood style videos and rap music, the Daily Mail reported. Omar Omsen, also known as Omar Diaby, 41, was born in Senegal but grew up in Nice, France. Omsen moved to Syria in 2013

and was now seen by his followers as a spiritual leader. He leads a battalion of French jihadis and has
produced a film celebrating the attacks on satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo’s headquarters in Janu-
ary 2015 that killed 12 people. The IS terrorists have a history of using of aspects of popular culture, such as rap music, to enhance their videos, the Daily Mail reports. In April, pro-IS media group, alWa’ad media productions published a clip depicting the fall of the Eiffel Tower using graphics taken from the ‘Call of Duty’ video game. Omsen was among at least 1,700 French citizens who have left to fight for the IS. At least 250 persons have been murdered in the past 18 months by terrorists -- more than the total number of French nationals killed by them in the entire 20th century.

fter Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s apology in the House of Commons in May for the tragic 1914 Komagata Maru incident, Canada officially recognized its venue as a site of national historic significance. Defense Minister Harjit Singh Sajjan unveiled a commemorative plaque last weekend at the venue of the Komagata Maru episode in Vancouver over 102 years ago. The Komagata Maru was a Japanese ship hired by wealthy Sikh Gurdit Singh from Malaysia to bring 376 persons, mostly Punjabis, from India to Canada to challenge the racist laws of the time. The ship anchored in Vancouver in May 1914, but the pas-
Indian American student at center of freedom of expression debate NEW YORK: An Indian American leader of a student union is at the center of freedom of expression debate after the union took action against her for a Facebook comment in support of police personnel who had been shot dead by an anti-police activist. The vice president of the University of Houston students union, Rohini Sethi, had written: “Forget Black Lives Matter; more like All Lives Matter.” This came when five police officers were shot dead in Dallas, Texas, after a rally organized by the Black Lives movement to protest against police killings of African Americans in July. After criticism for what was seen as punishing her for expressing her views, union president Shane Smith backed down last week in a compromise that also had her apologize. Universities have come under criticism for muzzling free expression of views guaranteed by the constitution due to student protests. Earlier, amid protests from the Black Students Union and some activists, Smith suspended her from her position as punishment for writing the post and ordered her to attend three cultural events each month, take part in mandatory diversity training and write a letter reflecting on her Facebook post. — IANS

degi Dhool”, a political thriller that chronicles the spectacular rise of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next month. Directed by Khushboo Ranka and Vinay Shukla, “Udegi Dhool”, which is 95 minutes long, has been distilled from 400 hours of real behind-the-scenes footage shot through a year. “India is the biggest consumer of news and film and yet journalism informs so little of our cinema,” Ranka said in a statement. “We worked as ordinary citizens armed with the tools of journalism

— a camera, a mic and curiosity,” said Shukla. The movie, which was in post-production for two years, sneaks viewers into the middle of heated arguments and campaign
strategies of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Produced by Anand Gandhi, director of the internationally acclaimed and National Award winning classic “Ship of Theseus”, ‘Udegi Dhool’ unfolds like a political thriller. It follows activists, politicians and academics on their best days and their worst, as they navigate the absurdities, trials and chaos of Indian politics and as they reveal their agenda, intentions and ambitions. It was previously titled “Proposition for a Revolution”, and was supported by a crowd funding campaign in India. The Toronto festival will be held from September 8-18.
event of national historic significance which helped shaped the values, including multi-culturalism, that have become a source of strength for our country today,” Sajjan said at the inauguration of the plaque. The Komagata Maru tragedy, along with the laws in force at the time that allowed Canada to be indifferent to the plight of the ship’s passengers, signifies a moment of great importance in the history of immigration and race relations in Canada, said a government statement on Sunday. The statement said the designation of the Komagata Maru Incident site provides an opportunity for all Canadians to learn more about India’s varied history, rich diversity and the lessons we have learned.

Great Samba party underway A glittering ceremony incorporating Brazil’s popular music forms of samba, bossa nova and hip-hop opened the Rio Olympics 2016 HARDEV SANOTRA, RIO DE JANEIRO
W
ith a glittering ceremony incorporating Brazil’s popular music forms of samba, bossa nova and hip-hop, its diverse but vibrant history, a commitment to the environment and supermodel Giselle Bundchen making the last but longest catwalk of her career, the 31st Olympics got underway here. For the first time refugees were recognized as a separate team with International Olympic Committee President, Thomas Bach, saying “we do not just tolerate diversity, but welcome it as an enrichment to our unity”, before Acting President of Brazil, Michel Temer, declared the 31st Olympic Games open here to a capacity crowd at the famed Maracana Stadium. An Olympic Laurel, a special recognition, was given to Kipchoge Keino, chairman of the Kenyan Olympic committee for his contribution to education, development and the games. The theme of the Olympic Games ceremony called on Earthlings to replant and save the planet. “It’s not enough to stop harming the planet, it is time to begin healing it,” said the literature explaining the game, saying promoting world peace is the basis of the Olympic spirit. Samba drums and dancing ushered in the games, with Brazil in a mood to throw a great party in the next 17 days, overlooking months

of negative news and troubles which at times threatened to derail the biggest games show on the Earth. Preparations woes and political upheaval has underlined the run up to the games, but on its opening day Brazilians were celebrating, aiming to make the Olympics a success. Fireworks at the end lighted up the spirits of those gathered to witness the show. Temer was not introduced in the beginning though there was a mention that he would be. Traditionally, the head of state or government is introduced in such a ceremony.
President Dilma Rousseff was suspended following moves to impeach her by the legislators over a massive accounting scandal. Bach alluded to the troubles by saying “you have managed this at a very difficult time in Brazilian history”. The three and a half hour ceremony, which opened at 8.00 p.m. Brazilian time (4.30 a.m. IST), reproduced patterns created by Brazilian artist Athos Bulcao through volunteers who turned their metallic paper into exotic shapes depicting what the organisers said where the indigenous
geometry, African patterns and traditional Portuguese tile design. Soon the floor of the large stadium, which housed over 60,000 people, was covered with shapes from sea and forests, reminding the packed audience of the need to conserve. It harked back to a time when Brazil was entirely covered by forests. Sea ice melt and impact of climate change came back in the presentation with hope being depicted in the greening of the cities and rural areas by plantation of seeds by volunteers. Right till the end, when the green Olympic rings were revealed
by mirror-hugging volunteers, the green theme carried on. The greenery soon enough gave way to geometric patterns to show that nature had been taken over by the geometry of agriculture, mining, roads and city plans -- not something unique to Brazil but a pattern seen the world over. The patterns and the people also pointed to the birth of nation forged from the encounter of natives, Europeans and African which also absorbed many waves of migration, including those from the Middle East and Asia. The organizers said they had jettisoned the high-tech approach and dependence on electronic and mechanatronic effects, changing the paradigm of Olympic ceremonies with an “analogue inventiveness” making the most of the “low tech spirit, the richness of Brazilian culture and the energy of thousands of volunteers”.
No more shooting for me even as hobby: Bindra HARDEV SANOTRA, RIO DE JANEIRO
Ace shooter Abhinav Bindra missed out on medal at Rio Olympics.
I
am done with shooting, even hobby shooting,” said Abhinav Bindra in detailed comments after coming fourth in the 10m air rifle event here at the Olympic Shooting Centre this week. Talking to reporters an hour after the event, a much more relaxed Bindra said that he did not know what he will do in the future, but shooting would not be any part of it, even as a hobby. He said he had done his best but had come out without a medal. Asked whether he would be at least shooting in his backyard range, he quipped: “I am turning that into a vegetable garden. Are you serious? he was asked, “don’t I look like a serious person,” he
replied. He was then asked if he was not just putting up a brave face, “What else can I do. What do you want me to do, start crying?” he asked adding, “Yes, I did well.” Coming fourth in
Olympics was not a mean achievement he had earlier said minutes after conceding the bronze in a play-off. “One tries to shoot the best in every shot.” The only gold medalist India
had produced an individual event, Bindra said after twenty years, five Olympics and three Olympic medals he deserved to take it easy. Smiling and joking with the reporters outside the shooting arena because non-rights holding TV crews are not allowed inside, he said he had to work hard and practice constantly for Olympics as “my job is not as easy as yours”. He did concede that not getting a medal did “hurt a little bit”, but added “that’s life. It’s part and parcel of the game”. To a question as to how he kept on going, despite some injuries over the last couple of year, Bindra said: “I think motivation is very intrinsic thing. I wanted to do well trying to overcome challenges, have faith and live in hope.” He said the sight of the original gun,
made especially for the Rio Olympics, had broken when it fell in the morning, so he had use the spare gun. But he did not think that had any effect. When reporters persisted in asking him what he would do next he said he had barely finished an Olympic event and people want to know what he would do for the next few years. Asked if he could coach, he said: “If I start coaching, my students will run away in two hours,” adding that he would have to think about how to make a living. So how would he give back to the profession or help the young, he was asked. “I already help about 30 young shooters through my foundation. I will do my best for them,” he said. His message for the young: “Work hard, persist and succeed.”

Led by superstar Michael Phelps, the US swimmers contributed three gold medals on Thursday. To a thunderous crowd, Phelps stormed to the gold medal in the men’s 200m individual med-

Earlier at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium, Ryan Murphy grabbed his second gold medal of the Rio Olympics, winning the men’s 200m backstroke final while Simone Manuel and Penny Oleksiak of Canada have tied for the gold medal in the women’s 100m freestyle. “My first gold medal, at my first Olympics, is kind of a surprise to me. tar shuttlers Saina Nehwal, P.V. Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth were the lone bright spots along with the tennis duo of Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna as India endured another dismal day at the ongoing Rio Olympics here. The Indian men’s hockey team also had something to cheer about as they reached the quarter-finals after a gap of 36 years despite being beaten 1-2 by the Netherlands. Sania and Bopanna started their campaign in the mixed doubles category on a positive note with a straight sets victory over Samantha Stosur and Jonathan Peers of Australia here on Thursday. The Indian pair overcame a strong challenge from their Australian opponents in the first set to carve out a 7-5,6-4 victory in one one hour and 13 minutes and book their places in the quarter-finals at the Olympic Tennis Centre. Sania and Bopanna will now take on the British combination of Andy Murray and Heather Watson for a place in the semi-finals. At the badminton courts, Saina, Sindhu and Srikanth also won their respective opening matches in the women’s singles event. But there was disappointment in store for Indian fans in most of the other events with archers Deepika Kumari and

The badminton events started on a disappointing note as both the men’s and women’s doubles teams of Manu Attri and B. Sumeeth Reddy and Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponappa lost their respective opening round matches. To add to the dismay, boxer Shiva Thapa, one of India’s medal hopes, saw his campaign come to an end after he lost his Bantam weight (56kg) category bout to Cuba’s Robeisy Ramirez. As if the failure in the Olympic disciplines was not enough, Sports Minister Vijay Goel and Indian offi-
cials added to the shame with the Rio Olympic organisers threatening to cancel his accreditation accusing them of “aggressive and rude” behaviour. But Saina Sindhu and Srikanth provided some relief to the fans by winning their opening matches albeit in contrasting styles. Srikanth started his Olympic campaign in superb fashion, breezing past Lino Muzon of Mexico in straight games in the opening match of Group H in the men’s singles event. The only Indian to qualify in the men’s singles event, Srikanth won 21-11, 21-17 in 41 minutes at the Pavilion 4 of Rio Centrio here. RIO DE JANEIRO: Dipa Karmakar created history by becoming the first Indian gymnast to enter the Olympic finals at the Rio Olympic Centre here. The 22-year-old qualified for the final round in the individual vault final of artistic gymnastics after finishing eighth on the standings. Competing in the third sub-division, Dipa had an average score of 51.665. She managed to perform den on Sunday. Sindhu started her campaign in style by thrashing Hungarian Laura Sarosi in straight games in her Group M match. The World No. 10 took just 27 minutes to wrap up the match 21-8, 21-9 against the No. 64. She will next face Canadian Michelle Li on Sunday. Placed in Group C, Saina then overcame some stiff resistance from local favorite Vicente Lohaynny 21-17, 21-17 to emerge successful in her opening encounter. Saina will be playing her next match on Sunday against Maria Ulitina of Ukraine.

The Tripura gymnast scored executed the ‘Produnova’ in her first attempt on the vault to 15.100 with 8.1 for execution and 7.00 for difficulty. Deepa will compete in the finals on August 14. Meanwhile, it was heartbreak for both the doubles pairs as the 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medallist duo of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnapa lost their opening Group A match. Medal hopefuls Deepika Kumari and Bombayla Devi also added to India’s woes after losing their 1/8 Eliminations round of the women’s individual category. The Indian men’s hockey team reached the quarter-finals after a gap of 36 years despite being beaten 1-2 by the Netherlands for their second loss in four Pool B games.

TAKE ‘TIRANGA YATRA’ SERIOUSLY: MODI Modi asks BJP MPs to highlight the contributions of freedom fighters and martyrs among school children IANS, NEW DELHI
M
iffed with his BJP MPs for not taking his directives “seriously”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked them to put in efforts to make the Tiranga Yatra a success and send a daily report card of their activities, sources said. Speaking at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) parliamentary party meeting here, Modi expressed his “unhappiness” over MPs not submitting report cards of their work during the last two years. Sources said Modi had last month asked party MPs to submit the report card of their work during the last two years but more than 25 percent of them didn’t respond. According to sources, the MPs were asked to give details of the work done by them in their respective constituencies, details of the beneficiaries of different central government schemes, status of Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana, matters raised in parliament related to their constituencies and expenditure through MPLAD scheme.
“Now, take this Tiranga Yatra seriously. Send online report to party president everyday. Don’t give excuses,” a source quoted Modi as saying at the meeting. Modi asked the BJP MPs to highlight the contributions of freedom fighters and martyrs among school children during the fortnight-long celebrations of India’s 70th Independence Day. He also released a theme song “70 Saal Azadi, Yaad Karo Kurbani” for the Tiranga Yatra being organised to mark the 70th anniversary of India’s Independence from British rule. “Prime Minister has asked the party MPs to highlight the contributions of freedom fighters and martyrs among school children. He said the Yatra will spread the message of harmony and MPs need to work hard to make it successful,” Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar told reporters after the meeting. Kesiraju Srinivas, popularly known as Ghazal Srinivas, who holds the record for singing in most languages, has composed the song, he said. The CD of the song will be released soon in all the regional languages.

T
he UN is honoring M.S. Subbulakshmi by issuing a stamp on Independence Day to mark the birth centenary of the "Queen of Music". This year is also the 50th anniversary of Subbulakshmi's legendary concert in 1966 at the UN and A.R. Rahman will perform here as a tribute to her on August 15. "As India celebrates its 70th Independence Day, the event will emphasize that the wisdom of Indian traditions remains relevant to current global thinking," the Indian Mission to the UN said in a statement.
“The musical evening will provide a glimpse of gaiety and dynamism of India on the occasion of India@70.” During the Independence Day celebrations here, an exhibition on the life and music of Subbulakshmi is also to be held. Subbulakshmi, hailed by Jawaharlal Nehru as "The Queen of Music", was the first Indian to perform here when she was invited by then Secretary General U Thant to give the UN Day concert on October 23, 1966. Her visit, which also included a concert at New York's Carnegie Hall, was arranged at the initiative of C.V. Narasimhan, who was a UN Under Secretary General then. The highlight of the
UN concert was Subbulakshmi singing a hymn in English — a rare occurence. It was written by C. Rajagopalachari, the freedom fighter and the first Governor General of independent India. It was set to music by Handel Manuel of All India Radio. It was a prayer for gathering all nations "under this Uniting roof", the General Assembly, and it was accompanied on the piano. The events were being organised with the support of Sankara Nethralaya, an India-based civil society organisation, among others.
Red Fort comes under security blanket RAJNISH SINGH, NEW DELHI
A
multi-tier ground-to-air security ring has been thrown in and around the Red Fort from where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation for a third time on Independence Day. Nearly 10 security agencies took over the 17th century Mughal monument, located in Old Delhi, on August 8. They will hand over the complex to the Special Protection Group (SPG) and Delhi Police on August 14 evening. The security agencies include the military, Prime Minister's Security Cell, SPG, Delhi Police Special Cell, National Security Guard (NSG), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Border Security Force and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which routinely protects the sprawling monument, is also part of the security drill. And so are the Intelligence Bureau as well as the dog and bomb detection squads.

“Our routine drills will continue till August 14,” an official in the know told IANS. Like every year, the Prime Min-
ister will address the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort on August 15 to mark the country's Independence Day.
The venue will be crowded with VVIPs, diplomats and ordinary people, the total number running into thousands. The speech is also heard by millions around the country. The Red Fort, a hugely popular tourist spot in the capital, was closed for the public on August 8. It will reopen after the Independence Day celebration on Monday. All security personnel now in the Fort have special cards to ensure no one infiltrates the complex. At least 9,000 armed security personnel, including 400 sharpshooters, will be deployed at the Fort and nearby areas on August 15. Some 40 CISF sharpshooters and 360 personnel from the NSG, CRPF, ITBP and Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) besides BSF commandos will be stationed on buildings in a 500 metre radius of the venue. Over 500 CCTV cameras have been mounted in the Fort premises and nearby areas. The Delhi Metro tunnel near the monument will be shut a day in advance and armed guards
deployed at either end. Security forces started the sanitization of the Fort in June. Over a dozen mock drills are carried out daily. These include placing so-called improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and storming of the facility by “terrorists” to detect the preparedness of the security agencies. August 15 will also see extensive police deployment across Delhi. More than 35,000 police personnel will spread out in crowded places, markets, railway stations, bus stops and other strategic locations. Anti-sabotage teams are carrying out random checks and searches in the city, the officer said. A special control room has been set up for August 15. Delhi Police have restricted aerial movement over the Red Fort for the next two months from Friday. Red Fort, a symbol of authority from where the Mughals ruled undivided India, was attacked by Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists in December 2000, leaving two security personnel and a civilian dead.

Talking about it, Chaurasia said in a statement: “In my opinion, this song perfectly encapsulates the feeling of what it means to be an Indian. It evokes great pride in our national identity in every citizen, be it young or old, making it the perfect choice to
celebrate the spirit of Independence.” Chaurasia’s flute plays a subtle jugalbandi with the tabla. In a fitting end to the emotional high, Shubh, son of popular playback singer Shaan, sings the first two lines of the song sans any music. The young star-in-the-making will also soon be known as the voice behind a popular web series.

n the 75th anniversary of the ‘Quit India’ Movement launched here during India’s freedom struggle, Maharashtra launched ‘Quit India Movement 2’ to rid itself of various social evils and convert ‘swaraj’ into ‘suraj’. “After 68 years of Independence, there is a need for people to respond with similar passion, zeal and commitment to banish several social and other evils plaguing the nation and take India to newer heights,” Union Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu said on the occasion. He called for total eradication of poverty from the country, providing universal education, creating employment, combining development with welfare measures as part of the campaign. The state government launched its ‘Quit India Movement 2’ in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at the famous August Kranti Maidan in south Mumbai, earlier known as Gowalia Tank Maidan from where Mahatma Gandhi in 1942 gave a clarion call to the then British rulers to ‘Quit India’. Naidu said the country must make illiteracy, discrimination, disunity, disharmony, terrorism and anti-nationalism quit India so as to take the country from

‘Swaraj’ (Independence) to ‘Suraj’ (good governance). He said in order to achieve faster all-inclusive progress on all fronts, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had given the slogan of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas”. Speaking on the occasion, Fadnavis recalled Mumbai’s signifi-
cant in the freedom struggle. “Today, the city is taking a lead in launching the second ‘Quit India Movement’. This time, the fight is not against the British, but against social evils plaguing the state like corruption, farmers suicides, malnutrition, water wastage and terror,” Fadnavis said.
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has issued a terror alert, warning that the Pakistani Taliban was planning to strike on the Wagah border with India around the Independence Day ceremonies of the two neighbours. In a letter, accessed by IANS, Pakistan National Counter Terrorism Authority wrote to Punjab Home Secretary over the possible attack at the Wagah Border between August 13-15. “Reportedly, Tehreeke-Taliban, Fazal Ullah group is planning to target parade at Wagah border in Lahore or Ganda Singh Border in Kasur on August 13, 14 or 15,” the letter stated. It also warned that at least two suicide bombers had been dispatched to carry out the attack. “Extreme vigilance and heightened security measures are suggested to avoid any untoward incident,” the letter said. The letter comes as Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
chaired a high level security meeting. On November 2, 2014, a suicide bombing had taken place at Wagah border following the daily border ceremony in Pakistan. The attack, which led to dozens of fatalities, was claimed by three militant groups. Pakistan has already heightened its security at sensitive places across the country following the recent terror attack in Balochistan, which left over 70 people dead, making it the deadliest this year. Top military commanders in the country believe the terrorist threat is taking on a brutal shape due to “a growing nexus between hostile actors in the neighbourhood and facilitators within the country”. At a corps commanders’ conference held at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi on Tuesday, the generals reviewed the threat perception and discussed measures for countering the security challenges.

India celebrates 70th Independence Day
I-Day brings joy, holidays The terror suspects are from the KLF — an insurgent group which was part of the separatist Khalistan movement in Punjab in 1980s ASHISH MISHRA, NEW DELHI
A
n extended weekend around Independence Day has many Delhiites planning short holidays — with the quaint towns of the Himalayan foothills proving to be favored destinations, though some are even venturing abroad. Easily accessible hill stations in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh top the list, with most preferring road trips instead of the overnight trains and buses. “I am going to Manali in Himachal Pradesh with my friends. This is a perfect extended weekend for such a trip,” Chetan Jaiswal, a government employee, told IANS. And he is, of course, driving. “It is always an amazing experience to drive on serpentine roads, so I
have decided to drive myself to Manali,” Jaiswal added. The extended, three-day weekend, which starts on Saturday (August 13), is followed by Sunday and Independence Day on Monday (August 15). All government as well as most private offices will remain closed on Saturday, a second Saturday. For government employees, the break can be made even longer if they take a day's leave on Friday (August 12), or add two days leave on Tuesday and Wednesday — August 16 and 17 — as August 18 is Raksha Bandhan, a restricted holiday. For those in the private sector, a four-day leave request (from Tuesday, August 16, to Friday, August 19) can result in an impressive nine-day break from August 13 to August 21.
According to those in the travel trade, apart from the hill stations, other hot destinations include Jaipur, Udaipur and Goa. Some are also choosing to fly to foreign countries like Sri Lanka, Thailand, Hong Kong and Malaysia that are short flights away. A bank professional, Yashwardhan Verma says that he is planning to spend the weekend in Sri Lanka. "I am visiting Sri Lanka with friends. Hill stations would be very crowded and the pristine beaches of Sri Lanka are always a favourite destination for me, so I chose it over the hills," Verma told IANS. Akshay Gupta, a quality control analyst, says that though his first choice was Kashmir, he decided instead to visit the Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu. "I wish I could visit Srinagar and Gulmerg, but
In view of the demand, travel operators are offering an array of holiday packages for the long weekend.
unfortunately due to the unrest in the valley I had to leave this idea. I have decided to visit Vaishno Devi shrine during the extended weekend," Gupta told IANS. In view of the demand, travel operators are offering an array of holiday packages for the long weekend. They say bookings are heavy for nearby hill stations such as Lansdowne, a tranquil place in
the Garhwal hills; Manali, a pretty alpine hill station in Himachal Pradesh; Dalhousie, a postcardpretty destination; and others like Mcleodganj, Tirthan, Nainital, and Shimla, the Queen of Hills. Rohit Garhwal, Associate Vice President (Sales and Operations) of TravelTriangle.com, says the days when traveling was restricted to a once-a-year activity are gone.

housands of Indo-Canadians joined in advance celebrations of India’s Independence Day here this week as Bollywood actress Neetu Chandra led the community parade in the heart of the biggest city of Canada. As its Grand Parade Marshal, Neetu led the India Day parade which included nine colorful floats for the first time in five years. Indian television actor and host Shabir Ahluwalia was the chief guest. “Last year, I was the Grand Parade Marshal in New York, and this year I am honoured to be here with you for India Day in Toronto,” said Neetu who surprised everyone when she said she holds two black belts in Taekwondo. Consulate General and the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC), the day-long cultural extravaganza showcased India’s diversity through about 250
artists with their diverse performances. Opening the celebrations with the unfurling of the Indian flag and the singing of the Indian and
Canadian national anthem, Indian consul general Dinesh Bhatia said this celebrations is not just about India’s 69th Independence Day but also about the celebrations of the world’s oldest civilization and its diversity. The Indian consul general said when he took charge at the Toronto consulate five months ago, he wanted to ramp up the India Day celebrations to make them as big as in New York. “Toronto has the largest concentration of the Indian diaspora anywhere in North America. So why shouldn’t be the India Independence Day celebrations be the biggest here?” he said. Andhra-born Dipika Damerla, who is minister for seniors in the Ontario ministry, said every day should be a day of celebrations for the Indians. “India has so much to celebrate because it is one of the oldest civ-
ilizations of the world. Sixty-nine years is just a blip on this ancient civilization,” she said. Damerla also read the message from her Premier Kathleen Wynne for the occasion. Ontario opposition leader Patrick Brown, who is considered the closest friend of India in Canadian politics, was dressed in Modi-like jacket for the occasion. And he didn’t miss to point this out to the audience who applauded in his praise. Brown said he is a great fan of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “That’s why I am wearing the Modi jacket today,” he said. The crowd cheered when Brown said: “I have been to India not one time, not two times, not three times...I have been to India sixteen times.” “In 2011, they made me an honorary citizen of Gujarat...so I am half Gujju.,” he added.

BY A STAFF WRITER T LOUIS, MO -- The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) organized a Hindu chariot procession, Rath Yatra, from Hindu Temple of St. Louis to Queeny Park in Ballwin on July 6. It included a chariot pulled by dozens of devotees over a mile using big ropes with the playing of drums and cymbals along with Lord Krishna chants. The celebrations also included a cultural program, kirtan, yoga, henna body art, meditation, free community vegetarian meal, arati, etc. The procession road was blocked for about an hour for the parade. A few hundred people participated in the celebrations, whose organizers included Dr. Ashok Kumar, Ramacarya Das, Narayana, etc. Meanwhile, Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada, has commended efforts of the organizers and St. Louis area community to realize this wonderful festival, said to be exhibiting the richness of Hinduism.
S
Rath Yatra is said to be the oldest known parade in the world and it is believed that pullers of this Lord Jagannatha’s chariot receive immense spiritual benefit. Popularized outside India by ISKCON founder A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, this annual parade festival has reportedly been held annually in major cities of the world since 1960s. The original Ratha Jatra is held on a grand scale in Puri (Odisha, India). The presiding deities of Sri Mandira—Jagannatha, Balabhadra and Subhadra—with celestial wheel Sudarshana are driven on the chariots to two miles north Gundicha temple in an elaborate ritual procession. The huge colorfully-decorated chariots are drawn by thousands of devotees. After a stay for seven days, the deities return to their abode in Sri Mandira. A glimpse of Lord Jagannatha on the chariot is considered to be highly auspicious and even a touch of the chariot is believed to yield benefits equivalent to several pious deeds. Many poets have written its glories.

‘Self-realization’ seminars draw knowledge-seekers BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Dada Bhagwan Pariwaar of Greater Chicago has just celebrated 3 days of spiritual “Self-Realization” seminar in suburbs of Greater Chicago. In the August 5 opening event hosted in Streamwood, Illinois at the Swaminarayan Temple, about 400 local Moomooskhas or Knowledge-seekers participated in a seminar. The knowledge-seekers asked questions directly to Pujya Deepakbhai Desai, the current successor of the Dada Bhagwan Foundation for spiritual science. Their questions included ‘What is the meaning of life?’ ‘How the life and death cycle work? ‘How does one live in peace and happy in this worldly life?’ ‘What happens after death?’ ‘How does one overcome their different fears?’ ‘How to overcome from negative thoughts from mind?’ ‘How not to hurt others?’ ‘How not to be hurt by someone’, etc. Pujya Deepkbhai gave very scientific answers and rationale to all questions, the meaning of living peaceful life by not hurting anyone with mind, speech, thought and action. He explained Dada Bhagwan’s spiritual science, gave a master key to open all locks of life problems by separating soul and body, and how one can stop charging karma and achieve ultimate liberation. The next day’s session was in Itasca, Illinois at the Swaminarayan Temple with Aptaputra Dimpalbhai and some 400 knowledge-seekers and mahatmas

participating in the satsang. The beauty of this satsang was that all attendees freely asked all kinds of questions. The morning satasang had a “question and answer”-based format as people asked all kinds of questions relating to their personal life, family life, professional life and their spiritual life. All related questions were answered focusing on how one can progress in the spiritual journey even while performing all duties of relatives or worldly life, how to stay in their real self (the pure soul) and keep separate from all their relative action and not to be driven by their relative situation. The evening was devoted to Gnanvidhi
(the scientific process of self-realization) in which 750 people from Iowa, Wisconsin, Indiana, Missouri, Michigan, Ohio and other states and even overseas attending the inspiring program. Knowledge of the self (Atma – Gyan) is the final goal of all seekers. Without this knowledge, there is no liberation. In the Gnanvidhi ceremony, the belief that “I am this body-mind complex” is destroyed and the conviction that “I am pure soul” is established within. This awareness will blossom into deeper and subtler levels as one follows the simple guidelines that are given to nourish, protect and accelerate this revealed knowledge of the self.

BY A STAFF WRITER ARY, IN -- A Muslim woman from Gary, Indiana, said she felt discriminated against after she claims a worker at a Family Dollar store told her to remove her head covering (hijab) or leave the store in Indiana. Sarah Safi, 32, said she went to the store on Garfield Street on August 1 afternoon to buy charcoal for a family barbecue. “I might have made it 10 steps into the store and I hear the lady behind the counter say, ‘Ma’am, you need to take that off your face or you need to leave my store,” Safi said. Safi, who was fully covered, as she says she always is when in public, then started recording the incident on her cellphone. She told the woman behind the counter who said she was the manager, that she dressed this way for her religion. The manager told her to leave. “I understand, but you have to understand too this is a high-crime area and we get robbed a lot. You need to remove that from your face or remove yourself from the store,” the manager can be seen saying on the video. Safi uploaded the cellphone video on her Facebook and she says she decided to leave because she had four children waiting in her car outside.

Hear2Read app to help blind children BY A STAFF WRITER ILICON VALLEY, CA – Thanks to an app for Android devices created by Hear2Read and a team of students at Carnegie Mellon University, along with CMU professor Alan Black, Indian children will now have the capability of Text To Speech (TTS) software for the major languages spoken in India. The app will expand to Windows devices in the future. Hear2Read, which helps blind children through the TTS software, was founded in 2013 by Suresh Bazaj, an Indian American computer software and networking professional living in the Silicon Valley of California. In India, roughly 1.5 million children under the age of 20 are completely blind,

Bazaj explained. And with TTS software not able to help kids learn in certain dialects and languages, they were not able to keep up their education on par with sighted children. “Blind people in the US have high-
paying jobs and are able to keep up with other people and read all the material is because they are using the TTS software for English”, says Bazaj. By the end of the year, the app will service Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Kannada, Punjabi, Tamil, Bengali and Telugu. In 2017, it will expand to Assamese, Malayalam, Oriya and Urdu. The 12 languages account for 93 percent of the people, added Bazaj, though he said he’s unsure if the software will add the remaining Indian languages. Not only will the app, named FLITE, be able to help blind children, it will also be used to assist the millions of visually impaired children, as well as elderly people who have become visually impaired in their advanced age.

Asked if she is keen to work with Bollywood’s other two popular Khans, Jacqueline told IANS: “Absolutely. I think that is on everyone’s wish list... It enriches you as an actor... More the actors you work with, you learn a lot.” The 30-year-old actress, who is currently riding high on the success of her latest release “Dishoom”, an action-adventure film which also features Varun Dhawan and John Abraham, says it is a “dream” to work with superstars like Shah Rukh and Aamir. “They are legends,” she said and added: “It’s about growing and learning as an actor, so definitely, I would love to work with them.” Jacqueline is currently gearing up for her next release “A Flying Jatt”, directed by Remo D’Souza and also stars Tiger Shroff.
‘Actor’s saleability gets priority over performance’
A
ctress Rasika Dugal, who is on a roll with projects like Nandita Das’s directorial “Manto” and an Indo-German movie, feels while it is a great time to be in Indian cinema, sometimes an actor’s “perceived saleability” is preferred over one’s talent. “I think it’s a great time in Indian cinema with the many kinds of interesting films being made. But it’s still

fter playing a devotee of Lord Hanuman in his hit cross-border drama “Bajrangi Bhaijaan”, superstar Salman Khan is lending his voice for an animated feature film “Hanuman Da Damdaar”. He is ecstatic about the project. “Aap iss film mein dekhenge ki kaise bana Bhola Bhala Bajrangi ‘Hanuman da Damdaar’ (In this film, you will see how a cute and innocent Bajrangi became the mighty ‘Hanuman Da Damdaar’),” Salman said in a statement.
S
unny Leone, who will be seen in a cameo role in Sonakshi Sinha starrer “Noor”, will be portraying a Bollywood star in the upcoming film.”She will be playing a glamorous Bollywood actress in ‘Noor’,” a source told IANS. This will be the first time that the “Dabangg” actress will be sharing screen space with Sunny. “It was fun shooting for ‘Noor’ along with Sonkashi and I wish the team all the very best,” Sunny said in a statement. Directed by Sunhil Sippy, “Noor” will have Sonakshi essay a journalist.
Actors do get typecast: Prachi
I
n her eight-year journey in Bollywood, she has mostly essayed roles of the girl-next-door on screen. Now actress Prachi Desai, who is keen to break that image, says artistes do get slotted in genres. Asked if she is open to break her girl-next-door image, Prachi told IANS over phone from Mumbai: “The very moment someone offers me a fabulous role, I am totally game for it. I think it is certainly a matter of chance and opportunity which I think is needed here.”
tough for actors,” Rasika told IANS. Active on the theatre circuit with the popular play “The Vagina Monologues”, Rasika feels her role in “Qissa” made a difference in how people approached her for work. She rued, however, how “the perceived ‘saleability’ of an actor is given priority over performance”. Rasika also believes distributors need to take more risks.

‘Mohenjo Daro’ recovers Rs 60 cr before release
My struggles are getting harder: John Abraham NEW DELHI: Actor John Abraham, who started out as a model before venturing into the Hindi film industry in 2003 with “Jism” and now even produces movies, says his struggles in showbiz have become harder with time as he has become tougher on himself. Every newcomer, especially those with no backing of a film family, faces hardships in the competitive industry. Was it the same for John when he forayed into filmdom? “I still face struggle. Even today, after ‘Dishoom’, I struggle, but the struggle is of different kind. The struggles are getting harder today because I am getting tougher on myself. The struggle is about being fitter, stronger and faster,” John told IANS over phone from Mumbai. “The struggle is about finding better scripts... It’s about reducing the probability of failure, so the struggle is of a different kind. I really did not find that much of a struggle,” John added.
The total cost of the film, including publicity and advertising, is Rs 115 crore IANS, MUMBAI
T
he “Mohenjo Daro” team is in a happy space as even before the film has hit the screens, it has managed to recover Rs 60 crore through its satellite, music and other rights. “A major chunk of their investment has already been recovered. Since ‘Mohenjo Daro’ is a production film and not an acquisition, the economics of the project are fully in control,” said a source close to the film’s team. According to the source, the total cost of the film, including publicity and advertising, is Rs 115 crore, and the makers have already recovered Rs 45 crore from selling of satellite rights and the remaining Rs 15 crore through music and other rights.
A still from the movie ‘Mohenjo Daro’ which stars Hrithik Roshan and Pooja Hegde.
“Which means that the producers only need Rs 45 crore in India and Rs 15 crore overseas to break even,” the source said. Given the excitement around the return of the successful team of director Ashutosh Gowariker and Hrithik Roshan after “Jodhaa
Shah Rukh Khan detained at US airport, diplomat apologizes NEW DELHI: Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan said he was detained at a US airport following which a senior US diplomat of Indian origin apologized. "I fully understand and respect security with the way the world is, but to be detained at US immigration every damn time really really sucks," Shah Rukh said in a tweet. Following this, US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central
Asia Nisha Biswal tweeted: "Sorry for the hassle at the airport, @iamsrk even American diplomats get pulled for extra screening!” Precise details of when and why the superstar was detained were not known. In 2012, he was detained at a New York airport for two hours.
Akbar”, A.R. Rahman’s soulful music and Hrithik’s release after a gap of two years -- the number seems achievable.Hrithik, who has a huge fan following, is happy how the economics are shaping up for the movie. The movie, releasing on August 12.
‘Freaky Ali’ trailer out, does a ‘Lagaan...’ with golf IANS, MUMBAI
R
emember how Aamir Khan got into a a designer- to break the elitist club of British colonists who forbade the desi peasants from penetrating into the game of cricket? Now director Sohail Khan does a “Lagaan” on the game of golf in “Freaky Ali”. It really can’t get any more elitist than this. And to compound the
sense of ruptured elitism, Sohail has cast Nawazuddin Siddiqui, the archetypal man of the masses, the dude from the domain of the downtrodden, to take on the stuffed shirts on the golf greens. And yes, he also gets the sophisticated ‘babe’, played by Amy Jackson. Someone in the trailer predicts he will be the Sachin Tendulkar of golf. Tiger Woods is not complaining. In the “Freaky Ali” trailer, though
he is shown turning into a golfer, he remains at heart, a tapori. Golf will never be the same again.
assets in a highly risky mission for the United States Government, in exchange for clemency. The villains are: The exterminator Floyd Lawton (Will Smith) aka Deadshot; Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), a crazy and fearless psychiatrist who falls in love with her patient, a psychopathic criminal
called Joker (Jared Leto); An Aussie called Captain Bomberang (Jai Courtney) who uses the boomerang as his defence missile; Pyrokinetic Homeboy El Diablo (Jay Hernandez); Waylon Jones (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) aka Killer Croc “a cannibal with rage issues, who suffers from a skin condition that causes him to develop reptilian features; the mask-faced Tatsy Yamashiro (Karen Fukuhara) aka Katana, a martial art expert, who is deadly with the samurai sword that’s haunted by her slain husband’s spirit; and Christopher Weiss (Adam Beach) aka Slipknot, an assassin expert in tactical grappling and scaling.Overall, as mentioned earlier, the film would appeal only to DC Fans.
‘Suicide Squad’ is strictly for DC fans only
D
irector David Ayer’s “Suicide Squad” is strictly for DC Comics’ fans who don’t mind a convoluted, mindless and logic-defying plot. After all, it is a fictional, comic universe -- a fantasy. This superhero film, based on the comics’ antihero team of the same name, is the third instalment in the DC Extended Universe. Stylishly mounted on an irrational and nonsensical, wafer-thin premise, the plot is intricately elaborate and complex. The narrative
