ANTA ANA, CA -- Iftekhar Murtaza, convicted of killing the father and sister of his exgirlfriend in a fiery attack on the Indian American family’s Southern California home, has been sentenced to death. The Orange County district attorney’s office said 30-year-old Murtaza, who was convicted for the murders of 56-yearold Jay Dhanak and his 20-year-old elder daughter Karishma in 2007, was sentenced on March 3 in Santa Ana. Prosecutors say he killed the pair in a plot to reunite with his then-18-yearold ex-girlfriend Shayona Dhanak after she ended their relationship citing her Hindu family’s opposition to her dating a Muslim. ‘No excuse for criminal acts’ US President Barack Obama talks tough following attacks on two policemen at Ferguson IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Barack Obama has said there was “no excuse for criminal acts” at Ferguson, where two policemen were wounded in a shooting last week. “Whoever fired those shots...they’re criminals, they need to be arrested,” Obama said during an interview on the ABC program Jimmy Kimmel Live. “And then what we need to do is make sure that like-minded, goodspirited people on both sides — law enforcement, who have a terrifically tough job, and people who understandably don’t want to be stopped and harassed just because of their race — that they are able to work together to come up with some good answers,” he said. Obama reacted with those words after the shooting that left two police officers wounded in St. Louis County, where Ferguson is located, during a street protest by dozens of people in front of the city’s police department.

Kumar Barve to run for US House in 2016

US President Barack Obama has indicated that any disregard for law will not be tolerated.

“What we have to make sure of is that the folks who disregard and disrespect the other side, people who resort to violence, that they’re marginalised,” the president said. The Ferguson shooting came

New role for Aneesh Chopra IANS, WASHINGTON

I WASHINGTON: Kumar P. Barve, the first Indian-American to be elected to a state legislature in the U.S. in 1990, now plans to run for the U.S. House of Representatives in 2016. Barve, who has been a member of the Maryland House of Delegates for 24 years, announced his plans to run for the US House seat being vacated by fellow Democrat Chris Van Hollen, earlier this week, according to the Washington Post. If elected, he would be the fourth Indian-American member of the US House after Dalip Singh Saund, Bobby Jindal, current Louisiana governor, and Ami Bera, who is serving his second term in the House. “I am ready to take my experience working for economic growth and fighting for our middle class to the federal level,” Barve said in an e-mail to supporters. “This isn’t going to be easy. Offering bold and innovative proposals to rebuild our middle class and grow our economy never is.”

During his tenure, Chopra’s role involved making government data more accessible. It’s a mission he has continued after his departure, according to the Washington Post. After leaving the White House, he has founded Arlington-based start-up Hunch Analytics, assembling a band of public officials,

tech entrepreneurs and think-tank analysts whose focus is firmly on the labor market. “ W i t h Aneesh Chopra today’s technologies, we can do a lot more to build open data sets for skills,” Chopra was quoted as saying. ture” that indicated “both racism and just a disregard for what law enforcement is supposed to do”. Ferguson is where unarmed black teenager Michael Brown was shot dead by a white police officer last

August in an incident that sparked a wave of disturbances all across the country. Jackson’s resignation was one of the chief demands of the Ferguson protests after Brown was killed. A report by the justice department published last week questioned the practices both of police and justice authorities in Ferguson. US Attorney General Eric Holder said the Department of Justice will use its authority to reform the Ferguson police department, going so far as to dismantle it entirely if that should prove necessary. The justice department accused the Ferguson police of systematically violating the civil rights of the town’s black residents, with arrests for no apparent reason and the excessive use of force, above all against that community. Investigations revealed that over the past two years, African-American citizens of the city (67 percent of the population), were the object of 85 percent of traffic stops, 93 percent of arrests and 88 percent of cases in which police used force.

the April 10-11 Summit of the Americas in Panama City. “It is vital for US foreign policy to come to Panama with some-

thing more than announcements about its relationship with Cuba and to do everything possible to arrive with the issue of the embassies resolved,” said Jorge de Armas, analyst and director of Cuban Americans for Engagement, an organisation which for years has advocated for the normalisation of US-Cuba relations. Cong furious over Rahul ‘snooping’ Sparks fly in Parliament as a police officer turns up at Rahul’s residence to collect his personal details IANS, NEW DELHI

This practice started in 1957: Govt

T

he alleged snooping on Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi blew into a political confrontation on as the Congress charged the BJP with a “police state mentality” while the government dismissed the episode as a “non-issue”. The issue figured both inside and outside Parliament, as Congress members raised it vociferously in both houses. The Congress staged a walkout over the issue in the upper house. The spat continued outside the house, with Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi accusing the government of spreading misinformation on the issue of Delhi Police proforma. He said Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi or their offices had never filled the proforma. Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu said the Congress had a “track record” of snooping and alleged that then finance minister Pranab Mukherjee had complained to then prime minister

NEW DELHI: The practice of collecting information about VVIPs for their security started as early as 1957, the government said, as the Congress created an uproar alleging snooping on party vice president Rahul Gandhi. “A practice has been going on from 1957. In 1987, a form was devised when Congress was in power,” Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said on Monday in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. In the Lok Sabha, Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu

Manmohan Singh about alleged bugging devices in his office. He also said there was distrust on the issue between the finance ministry and home ministry. Raising the issue of alleged snooping on Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said the Special Protection Group (SPG) personnel at Gandhi’s residence had caught a Delhi Police official in “suspicious circum-

stances” on March 2 and the proforma carried by the police official had questions like name of father, complexion, color of eyes and kind of shoes worn by Gandhi. “Rahulji is under SPG protection. The government has minute to minute information (about his movements). Why was a proforma sent?” he asked. Gandhi is, at present, on “leave of absence” to reflect on the Congress

party’s future course. Kharge alleged that the government wanted to suppress its opponents. “Is it the Gujarat model in BJP government? What is the thinking going on about opponents?” he asked. Naidu said 526 VVIPs (very very important persons) had been profiled over the years. He said Sonia Gandhi, former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, BJP leaders L.K.

Delhi done, AAP to go national Mamata to rope in CBI to

probe Bengal nun gang rape IANS, KOLKATA

W

GHAZIABAD: A month after it took power in Delhi after crushing the BJP and the Congress, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) announced on March 17 that it has decided to go national. “After our spectacular victory in Delhi and seeing the love of the people, we have decided to expand at the national level,” party leader Sanjay Singh told the media here. The AAP’s Political Affairs Committee (PAC), its highest decision-making body, also decided to enrol “active volunteers” and to form a committee to decide their role in different states. Five of the PAC’s seven members met at the residence of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who returned to the capital late on March 16 after 10 days of naturopathy treatment in Bengaluru for his nagging cough and high blood sugar. The AAP, India’s youngest political party, would also decide in which states it should contest elections, Sanjay Singh said.

He added that the crisis in the party would soon end, and party leaders would reach out to Prashant Bhushan, who, along with Yogendra Yadav, was ousted from the PAC this month. Those who took part in the meeting included Kejriwal, his deputy Manish Sisodia, Delhi minister Gopal Rai, Sanjay Singh, Ashutosh, Ashish Khetan and Dilip Pandey. The announcement marks the most significant decisions taken by the AAP following the return to Delhi of Kejriwal, who had earlier expressed his reservations about fighting elections in other parts of the country. AAP leaders have in the past stated that the party was determined to contest the next assembly election in Punjab, where it won four Lok Sabha seats. The party is also said to be keen to fight municipal elections in Mumbai and Bengaluru — the two cities where it enjoys a wide network of volunteers.

est Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on March 18 announced she would “entrust the investigation” of the gang rape of a 71-yearold nun in West Bengal’s Nadia district to the CBI given its “seriousness” and “sensitivity”. “The Ranaghat incident of March 14 is a very serious matter. The police administration was instructed to take swift action to nab the culprits. They are making their best efforts. “Considering the seriousness and sensitivity of the case and also the fact that the place of incidence is very close to the border area, I

have decided to entrust investigation of the case to CBI,” Banerjee said in her Facebook post. The nun was brutalized by a gang of bandits inside the Convent of Jesus and Mary in Ranaghat, some 80 km from Kolkata, on March 18.

said: “It is a procedure started in 1957 by the Delhi Police. The proforma for collating information was revised in 1999 to maintain profiles of senior leaders living in Lutyens’ Delhi.” Police last week visited Gandhi’s office and inquired about his physical appearance, his height, color of eyes and hair, among others. While Delhi Police said this was a “routine” exercise, the Congress and other opposition parties termed it “political espionage”.

Advani, Arun Jaitley, Rajnath Singh and Sushma Swaraj were among those profiled. Naidu said Vajpayee had also been asked questions about his dress and footwear. “Sonia ji... same proforma was given to her. It is a routine exercise. Nothing to do with this model or that. Gujarat is pride of the country... (you) are making an issue out of non-issue,”Naidu said.

BJP legislator elected J&K assembly speaker JAMMU: Kavinder Gupta, a BJP legislator, was on March 18 elected the Speaker of the state legislative assembly. After the budget session of the assembly started here, senior PDP leader and Education Minister Naeem Akhtar proposed the name of Kavinder Gupta for the post. Gupta is an MLA from Gandhi Nagar constituency of Jammu district. Deputy Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Nirmal Singh seconded the proposal after which Gupta was unanimously elected. Gupta replaces the Protem Speaker Muhammad Shafi of the regional National Conference.

Cabinet approves bill on tracing black money IANS, NEW DELHI

G

iving concrete shape to Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s announcement of a bill to trace black money, the union cabinet on March 17 approved a new law to track unaccounted wealth. Finance ministry sources told IANS that the union cabinet approved the Foreign Income and Undisclosed Assets (Imposition of New Tax) Bill, 2015, for tabling in the Lok Sabha. The new law would entail rigor-

ous imprisonment of up to 10 years and a penalty of 300 percent on its perpetrators. Those evading tax by sending money to foreign countries would not be allowed to approach the Set-

tlement Commission, Jaitley had told parliament while announcing his 2014-15 annual budget. He had also said that not filing income tax returns or filing them with inadequate disclosures would lead to rigorous imprisonment of up to seven years. Undisclosed income from any foreign assets would be taxable at the maximum marginal rate. If an offense is detected, banks, financial institutions and individuals will all be liable for prosecution and penalty.

Economy needs a dovish Raghuram Rajan Ongoing economic reforms and de-bottlenecking of investments will add to India’s growth rate in the coming quarters but this must be accompanied by a large fall in the cost of capital VATSAL SRIVASTAVA, NEW DELHI

T

he global economy is still very much in the zero interest rate policy (ZIRP) era with the exception of the U.S. Federal Reserve which is widely expected to raise rates this year. Sixteen of 18 industrialized nations have seen their inflation reading run below expectations as deflationary forces continue to exert pressure on the global economy. After many years, inflation has cooled off to a level where India can aggressively begin an interest rate easing cycle to jumpstart the much talked about cyclical recovery. Following the CPI print of 5.4 percent in February, the consensus view is that CPI will consistently undershoot RBI’s 6 percent target through 2015 and average five percent in FY16 according to Citibank. While the monsoon is a risk factor to these forecasts, the softer inflation readings should continue on account of lower commodity prices, moderate minimum support price (MSP) hikes and a deceleration in rural wages. Growth

figures are nowhere close to flattering given the equity valuations the markets are commanding. Industrial production continued to expand at a moderate pace of 2.6 percent year on year in January as compared to a revised growth of 3.2 percent last month. Ongoing economic reforms and de-bottlenecking of investments will of course add to our growth rate in the coming quarters but this

proof that U.S. oil production is overpowering the declining rig count, OPEC and geopolitical tensions. This alone should be reason enough for Rajan to go out and ease 50-75 basis points more than market consensus. Further, we desperately need a cash reserve ratio (CRR) cut as well so that banks can reduce their deposit rates faster. To be bullish on India, we need a dovish Rajan.

Growth figures are nowhere close to flattering given the equity valuations the markets are commanding must be accompanied by a large fall in the cost of capital. Imagine the market impact if Rajan comes out and says: “We will do whatever we can to achieve 8-9 percent growth, keeping our inflation target in mind.” The recent bounce in crude prices turned out to be a dead cat bounce and is

Vinod Mehta, A Prince among journalists SAEED NAQVI, NEW DELHI

V

inod Mehta would have been flabbergasted. He would never have expected such a turnout at his funeral - the most powerful politicians, journalists, writers, cartoonists, artists, everybody except... well, in that exception possibly lay the secret of his success. The fixers and their patrons were not there. The attendance at the Lodhi Road crematorium is not the only outpouring. Newspapers, magazines, TV channels across the country have not stopped looking at what now resembles a void. The

Times Now channel was kept open the whole morning for phone-ins. I cannot remember an editor ever seen off with so much adulation. The area for independent discourse shrank totally after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The tectonic event was marketed not as the victory of freedom but of market forces. Editors became promoters of neo conservative economic policies. What made Vinod’s funeral special and popular was the absence of a category most common people are beginning to have a diminishing respect for: Big Business. Every publication of his upto the crowning glory of Outlook, Vinod

had virtually built up brick by brick, with his own hands. There was no India Inc, no media tycoon to tower above him. The glory and the brickbats were all his. Outlook was not his means to power and wealth. In fact it was quite the opposite. It was his means to enjoy

his journalism by upholding the classical, adversarial attitude towards political power and its nexus with corporate India. Like many men of greatness, Vinod was quintessentially self made. His average, middle class family had not bestowed too much

on him. Armed with a second class senior Cambridge and a third class BA from Lucknow, he turned up in London. The recycled Oxbridge elite was running out of cash by the 60s. The Lucknow boy of our narrative settled down in Surbiton, Surrey in the company of one Bukhari from Pakistan who spoke English like Mr. Doolittle and Enamul Haq from Bangladesh, always in a dark suit. No, London was not working out well for Vinod. In the deep inside packet of his double-breasted corduroy jacket I once found a card which I put back immediately. It was Vinod’s employee ID card for the catering department of the British Railways. Journalism had come in his grasp after so much struggle, that he was constantly afflicted by a nagging insecurity — that he may lose it. Once he was at the Outlook office, family, friend, party an evening at the movies, nothing would lure him away from the grind. The “parcha”, as he called his magazine, was what he lived for.

Netanyahu set to return as Israel PM Prime Minister’s Likud party emerges the clear winner in Parliamentary elections in Israel bagging 30 seats IANS, TEL AVIV

W

ith 99 percent of the votes counted by early on March 18 morning, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party emerged as the clear winner in Israel’s parliamentary elections bagging 30 seats as compared to rival Zionist Union’s 24. Next in the 120-member Israeli parliament came the Joint Arab List with 14 seats, Yesh Atid with 11, Kulanu with 10 and the Jewish Home with eight. They were followed by Shas with seven, United Torah Judaism with six, Yisrael Beytenu with six, and Meretz with four seats, a local newspaper reported. The results came as a surprise, after exit polls published on March 17 night showed a stronger showing for Zionist Union, Meretz and Yachad — which will likely be kept out of the parliament. As votes were counted through the night, Likud’s victory became clear. Likud announced that Netanyahu told party leaders over phone that he hoped to form a coalition with the Jewish Home’s Naftali Bennett, Kulanu’s Moshe Kahlon, Yisrael Beytenu’s Avigdor Liberman, Shas’s Aryeh Deri, and United Torah Judaism’s Yaakov Litzman. If all those party leaders agree to join up with Likud, Netanyahu would be able to form a coalition of some 68-odd seats in the 120-member house — keeping

‘Pakistan to extend MFN status to India’ KOLKATA: Asserting that Pakistan would confer India the status of most favored nation (MFN) once the dialogue process resumed, Pakistan High Commissioner to India Abdul Basit on March 17 claimed that his country had almost extended the facility in March 2014 before it was informally conveyed to wait. “Pakistan was about to extend the MFN status to India in March 2014, but it was informally told, since it was an election year, it would be better if Pakistan waited and extended the facility after the polls,” Basit said during a Calcutta Chamber of Commerce organized event. He said the MFN status, now rechristened as non-discriminatory market access (NDMA), will be extended to India once the talks between the two countries resumed.

Palestinians ready to work with new govt RAMALLAH: The Palestinian National Authority (PNA) will deal with any Israeli government which abides by international conventions, the PNA presidency said in a statement on March 18. The PNA announcement came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing Likud party won in parliamentary elections, Xinhua news agency reported. The PNA’s state-run news agency Wafa quoted Nabil Abu Rdineh, spokesman of the Palestinian presidency, as saying in an official statement that the Palestinians did not care who the Israeli prime minister was.

his seat in power after an election that was seen by many as a referendum on his rule. The prime minister said he hoped to set up a coalition in the coming two to three weeks. This will be Netanyahu’s fourth term as prime minister. In the 2013 parliamentary elections, Likud, which has been in power since 2009, won 31 of the 120 seats. Opposition and Zionist Union co-leader Yitzhak Herzog phoned Netanyahu to congratulate him on his victory. Speaking to reporters outside his home, Herzog said he respected the nation’s decision, and vowed to keep working to resolve Israel’s economic and political challenges. “I wished him luck, but let it be clear, the problems are the same problems, nothing has changed,” he said.

Seven killed in Afghanistan KABUL: At least seven people were killed and 20 others wounded after a car bombing rocked Lashkar Gah, the provincial capital of the southern Afghanistan province of Helmand on March 18, police said. “The blast took place following a meeting in the government media center. Several officials were among those injured,” a police source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity. The car bombing took place at 10:50 a.m. in an area where several government office buildings are located, the source said, adding that more details would be revealed after investigations. Those injured were shifted to hospitals in the city and security personnel cordoned off the area shortly after the blast.

statue of Mahatma Gandhi has been extended the most central position in London’s Parliament Square directly facing Britain’s Palace of Westminster or Houses of Parliament. In a park where there are statues of Sir Winston Churchill and Nelson Mandela in two corners, it is highly significant that arguably the

most prestigious location has been given to Gandhi. The statue was unveiled by Indian Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in the presence of British Prime Minister David Cameron on a glorious sunny, albeit cold morning in London in the presence of a hundreds of members of the public. British sculptor, Philip Jackson, renowned for statues of Queen Elizabeth and Bomber Command.

NEW YORK: A team of Columbia University researchers led by an Indian-American engineer has invented a technology that may double radio frequency data capacity. The new “full-duplex radio integrated circuits” (ICs) can be implemented to enable simultaneous transmission and reception at the same frequency in a wireless radio. Up to now, this has been thought to be impossible: transmitters and receivers either work at different times or at the same time but at different frequencies. “This is a game-changer,” said associate professor Harish Krishnaswamy who led the team. “By leveraging our new technology, networks can effectively double the frequency spectrum resources available for devices like smartphones and tablets,” Krishnaswamy added. In the era of Big Data, the current frequency spectrum crisis is one of the biggest challenges researchers are grappling with and it is clear that today’s wireless networks will not be able to support tomorrow’s data deluge. Today’s standards support 40 different frequency bands, and there is no space left at radio frequencies for future expansion. At the same time, the grand challenge of the next-generation 5G network is to increase the data capacity by 1,000 times. So the ability to have a transmitter and receiver re-use the same frequency has the potential to immediately double the data capacity of today’s networks.

Jackson started work on the statue in July. The sculpture is inspired by photographs of the civil rights leader outside 10, Downing Street in 1931. “This statue is a magnificent tribute to one of the most towering figures in the history of world politics and by putting Mahatma Gandhi in this famous square we are giving him an eternal home in our country,” Cameron said. Several other notable personalities attended the ceremony, including Chair of the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust, Meghnad Desai, and Bollywwod superstar Amitabh Bachhan.

pinners Imran Tahir (4-26) and Jean-Paul Duminy (329) starred for South Africa as they thrashed Sri Lanka by nine wickets to reach the cricket World Cup semi-finals at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) here on March 18. Duminy’s hat-trick — the first by a South African in World Cup history — and leg-spinner Tahir’s four wicket burst helped South Africa bowl out Sri Lanka for 133 runs in 37.2 overs in the first quarter-final. In reply, young wicketkeeperbatsman Quinton de Kock (not out 78), Hashim Amla (16) and Faf du Plessis (21 not out) completed the formalities for South Africa with nine wickets and 32 overs to spare. Our worst performance in World Cup: Mathews IANS, SYDNEY

D SYDNEY: On a high after winning their cricket World Cup quarter-final match against Sri Lanka, South Africa skipper AB de Villiers said his team was “very motivated” as they looked to break loose from the tag of “chokers”. “I didn’t have to say much. We were very motivated for this game. The guys were in a really good space and they rocked up mentally,” de Villiers said at the post-match presentation ceremony at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) here on March 18. “They (spinners) came in at a crucial stage. We kept them back until the 14-15th over, so for the two of them to come on against a subcontinental team at a crucial stage was really impressive,” said de Villiers. The 31-year-old now hopes that he will be holding the elusive World Cup trophy aloft on March 29 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). “I like to believe in big things. I truly believe we’re going to go all the way. For now we’re just going to enjoy a beer and think about what’s to come,” added de Villiers.

escribing their loss to South Africa in the quarter-final as their worst performance in the World Cup, Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews on March 18 thanked old war horses Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara for their contribution to cricket. The islanders were bowled out for a paltry total of 133, which South Africa chased down in just 18 overs with nine wickets to spare to enter the semi-finals. “This is easily the worst performance that we’ve done in the World Cup and it happened to

be in the quarter-finals. It’s disappointing not to make it a memorable one for Mahela and Sanga. But let me take this opportunity on behalf of the country and the team to thank them for their services,” Mathews said.

Auckland to face the winners of the quarter-final between New Zealand and the West Indies. Earlier, South Africa exerted pressure on the Sri Lankans quite early. Right-arm pacers Kyle Abbot and Dale Steyn removed openers Kusal Perera (3) and seasoned Tilakaratne Dilshan (0) respectively to leave Sri Lanka in trouble at 4/2 in the fifth over. Veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Kumar Sangakkara, 37, didn’t bat with the elegance and style he is known for and scored a 96-ball 45. Sangakkara, who scored four centuries in the previous four matches, took 16 deliveries to get off the mark. After he scored five runs, he became just the sixth batsman to score more than 500 runs in a World Cup. That speaks volumes of the tight line and length maintained by the South African bowlers. Sangakkara forged a 65run partnership with Lahiru Thiri-

manne (41). Young left-handed batsman Thirimanne looked in fine form, hitting five fours to score 41 in 48 balls. Man-of-the-match leg-spinner Tahir started his show by breaking the partnership as he dismissed Thirimanne. Another veteran, Mahela Jayawardene (4), playing in his final international tournament, also fell to Tahir. Skipper Angelo Mathews became the first victim of Duminy’s hat-trick. Off-spinner Duminy dismissed Mathews (19) in the final delivery of the 32nd over. In the first two deliveries of his next over, he got Nuwan Kulasekara and Tharindhu Kaushal. Duminy, is just the eighth man overall to take a hattrick in a World Cup match and second in this edition after Steven Finn’s effort at the end of Australia’s innings in the tournament opener on February 14.

Shami is one of the bowlers with the best release of the ball from the hand,” Arun was quoted as saying by bcci.tv. “The seam position of the ball at the time of delivery and landing is outstanding. He can look forward to a really bright future, which augurs well for Indian cricket,” Arun said. Clocking the 140 kmph mark with ease and swinging the ball both ways, Shami has extracted

steep bounce and bowled an impeccable line and length throughout the five games he has played so far in the ongoing mega event. “He can bowl at 140-plus consistently with the same kind of seam position, which is a great talent,” the bowling coach said.

against Ireland. The dashing opener now has amassed 337 runs from six matches, brightening India’s chances of retaining the crown.

In his short career, the southpaw has already seen several highs and lows. Dhawan’s six-year wait to earn

the coveted India jersey culminated in a disaster when he managed just a duck in his maiden ODI against Australia in 2010. Three years on, he stunned all observers, by stroking his way to the fastest Test century by a debutant, marking the dawn of a new batting star. His Test debut at Mohali was all the more special as the Delhi lad received his cap from none other than legendary Sachin Tendulkar himself. “We have known you as a gutsy player in domestic cricket, now we hope to see you as a gutsy player in international cricket, so show us some guts,” the master blaster had said handing him the cap.

espite a pandemonium breaking out in the Kerala assembly on March 13 with the opposition Left legislators going berserk, breaking the Speaker’s chair and computer, the controversy-embroiled Finance Minister K.M. Mani presented the state budget. All the Left members as well as Mani stayed back in the assembly premises for the night the previous day. In the morning, the atmosphere was tense as angry Left legislators prevented Mani from entering the house. He had to be escorted into the house by the ruling United Democratic Front (UDF) members and a huge battery of security staff so that he could read out the budget, the 13th he has presented during his political career. When the house assembled for the day’s proceedings at 9 a.m. on March 13, members of the opposition damaged Speaker N. Sakthan’s chair and computer. Sakthan then gave his clearance to present the budget from his office which – the Left pointed out – is against the rules of the assembly. After reading a few sentences from his printed address, he tabled the budget amid high drama. Left legislator V. Sivankutty –

who was seen throwing away the electronic equipment from the speaker’s podium, and two women legislators were admitted to a hospital here after they were injured in a scuffle between security guards and the treasury bench legislators. A police vehicle was set ablaze near the assembly complex by the protesters. Kerala Police on March 15 inspected the assembly floor to collect evidence, including video recording, of the vandalism wreaked in the house during the ruckus and damage to the speaker’s podium which officials estimate to be around `500,000. The secretary of the Kerala Legislature had submitted a written complaint to the Director General of

Police about the ruckus in the house on March 13 that led to large-scale destruction of property. The Kerala assembly on March 16 passed a resolution moved by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy suspending five Left legislators for the rest of the session for unruly conduct. The five are E.P. Jayarajan, K.T. Jaleel, K. Ajith, V. Sivan Kutty and K. Kunhammad. “In a democracy everyone has a right to protest but it has to be done within limits of civility and decency,” Chandy said. A furious V.S. Achuthanandan, the opposition leader, condemned the arbitrary attitude of the speaker and the government in going ahead with the decision.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Left legislator Jameela Prakasham said she bit Congress member K. Sivadasan Nair because he grabbed her from behind during the turmoil in the assembly last week. Prakasham, who came under widespread criticism in the social media for biting Nair on March 13, defended her aggression. “If people see the visuals (of the house proceedings) carefully, they will know it was Nair who came behind me and attacked me,” she said. “He first hit me with his knee, then he wriggled closer to me and used his hands to grab me. I told him, ‘Please leave me. Otherwise I will bite (you). He said you can bite, and I bit

him,” said Prakasham. She accused Nair and two other senior Congress legislators, Dominic Presentation and Benny Behanan, of attacking her. This, she said, was done to “please” Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. “This was happening right in front of the chief minister. He was a witness to the physical attack on me,” she said. “He says we can sit together and watch the recording. I ask him to bring his wife and children also to watch the recording,” said Prakasham. Nair told the media that the lady legislator was not speaking the truth.

He formally launched the programme by participating in the removal of silt from a tank at Sadashivanagar in Nizamabad district. Accompanied by Irrigation Minister T. Harish Rao and other cabinet colleagues, he unveiled a pylon to mark the occasion.

The government plans to restore 46,000 tanks over the next four years at an estimated cost of `25,000 crore. The mission has been named Kakatiya as a tribute to the Kakatiya dynasty rulers, who had built a large number of irrigation tanks in Telangana.

ith an eye to the upcoming elections to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the Karnataka government has proposed allocation of `13.91 billion in the 2015-16 state budget to development of infrastructure in this tech hub, which suffers from infrastructure woes. Presenting the budget for FY 2016 in the state legislative assembly here, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said `10 billion would be provided under the Nagarothana scheme and `3.91 billion out of grants from the state and central finance commissions for the various development works in and around Bengaluru. “We are determined to develop Bengaluru, which has brought international recognition to the state. `28.79 billion has been provided to the BBMP during the last two years for various infrastructure projects across the city,” he told the lawmakers in Vidhana Soudha. In addition, the state govern-

ment proposes to spend `15 billion on widening of seven arterial roads to decongest commercial and residential areas and prevent grid locks on thoroughfares for speedy vehicular movement across the city. “The infrastructure works include development of main junctions, construction of grade separators in select places under civic limits, construction of railway over/under bridges and development of backward areas in seven city municipal corporations, which have been merged into the civic body (BBMP),” the chief

minister said. The state government has also earmarked `2.7 billion to set up six units by the Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation across the city for treating 2,800 tonnes of solid waste per day. “To provide housing to the lower and middle class denizens of this city, the state-run Bengaluru Development Agency will construct 5,000 flats in the city for the applicants during the ensuing fiscal as against 5,700 flats built in this fiscal. We have allotted 859 flats so far,” said Siddaramaiah.

E M O N T, I L - - Fe d e r a l authorities arrested a Lemont doctor last week, accusing him of scheming to accept kickbacks for patient referrals. Neil Sharma, 34, a medical director for a company that contracts with Medicare and Illinois Medicaid, was arrested in a federal sting operation after he collected an illegal $2,500 kickback for his patient referral scheme, according to a statement from the US Attorney. He could face five years in prison. On February 13, Sharma met in Darien with the owner of a company that provides benefits to Medicare and Medicaid patients. At the meeting, Sharma proposed that he referred patients in exchange for monthly cash payments and a title of medical director of the other man’s company. That man, however, went to the FBI. On February 27, in Rockford under the watchful eyes of federal agents, that man paid Dharma $2,500. Sharma was arrested on March 13 and charged with receiving illegal remunerations. In addition to prison time, he could be fined $25,000 and be compelled to pay full restitution. Sharma was Vice President of Medical Affairs / Chief Medical Director at IlliniCare in Westmont. I hope I’m not at career’s peak:

Aamir Khan The actor has regaled his fans with films like ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’, ‘Lagaan’, ‘Ghajini’ and ‘3 Idiots’ IANS, MUMBAI

H

e has spent over 25 years in the Hindi film industry, giving action-packed, comedy, romantic and emotional performances; scoring hits and becoming a successful filmmaker. But Aamir Khan, who’s turning 50 on March 14, won’t like to say that he’s reached the peak of his career yet. At an event here, the PK star was asked if he feels that he has reached the pinnacle of his career. He said: “I’m still 18 years old. I don’t feel that I have reached at the peak of my career. According to me,

‘peak’ means you are about to go downwards, so I hope I am not at the peak of my career.” Aamir has regaled his fans with films such as Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, Sarfarosh, Lagaan, Rang De Basanti, Fanaa, Ghajini, 3 Idiots and Talaash, during his acting career. Taare Zameen Par, which saw him in the role of a teacher, and which marked his debut as a director, was highly appreciated. The actor, who’s often known as a ‘perfectionist’, is now prepping up for his role in Dangal. He has gone out of his way to gain weight for the role of a wrestler.

Rocky Handsome’ a step ahead of ‘Force’ MUMBAI: Actor John Abraham, who impressed with his action packed performance in the film Force, says his next Rocky Handsome is a step ahead of the former film. He says the new film promises John Abraham great intensity and “never-seenbefore” action. “My next film is Rocky Handsome, releasing on October 2. It is a step ahead of Force. It has ‘never-seen-before’ action,” John said during the cover page launch of Mens Health magazine featuring him.

saleable because there is a taboo.” As far as Hunterrr is concerned, she says that while the posters and trailer of the film, may suggest that it is a sex comedy, but it’s otherwise. “It’s a sweet love story and a simple film. Because of the posters and trailers, people feel it’s a sex comedy or an adult comedy, but it’s a very simple film. Everybody can relate to this film,” the actor said. Directed by Harshavardhan Kulkarni, the film features Gulshan Devaiah in the lead role. Radhika is currently riding high on the plaudits she has earned for her performance in Badlapur.

A

ctress Evelyn Sharma will be seen portraying an aspiring rockstar, Naina, in comedy caper film Kuch Kuch Locha Hai. “I believe that all actors should work hard to look convincing. My role in Kuch Kuch Locha Hai gave me a lot of scope for performance and my director Devang (Dholakia) allowed me to experiment. “My look has been carefully designed also keeping in mind the current fashion that young rockers sport,” Evelyn, who has appeared in films like Yaariyan and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani”, said in a statement. Dholakia said that it’s always fun “working with actors who are hard working and have a fresh perspective”.

‘NH10’ - dramatic telling of an urban fable

W

hen was the last time you were scared, really scared, while watching a film? Forget the creaky gates, flapping windows and banshee wails of the so-called horror movies which are manufactured with assembly-line monotony. The real horror resides on the roads and highways where marauders and prowlers lurk with all the evil force of modern-day servants of satan in search of prey. As a road thriller about a couple waylaid by criminals on a bleak stretch of highway outside Gurgaon, NH10 holds a great amount of riveting resonance. As a thriller that tears into the monstrous gender inequalities that engender gruesome

Film: “NH10”; Cast: Anushka Sharma, Neil Bhoopalam, Darshan Kumaar, Deepti Naval; Director: Navdeep Singh; Rating: **** crimes such a ‘honor killing’, NH10 puts forward an even stronger case. This is the beauty of this dark and passionate film. It works on a multiple level without evoking a selfconscious attitude of moral altitude. At the outset we see the well-to-do couple Meera (Anushka) and Arjun (Neil) take off on a celebratory weekend. It is Meera’s birthday and boy, what a birthday it’s going to be for her! By the time her car-wreck of a holiday stutters to a heaving sadis-

tic halt Meera has lost her husband and has mowed down a slew of bigoted sociopaths. The night ironically ends when

Meera’s revenge is complete. By the time you get even with your enemies, the act of vendetta loses its relevance. That’s the way life is. That’s the way life teaches us to exercise self-control. Turning a blind eye is one option of survival that Neil’s character refuses to exercise. He looks for trouble. The film is so authentically shot by cinematographer Arvind Kannabiran that often-times we forget the locations, the people and situations are trapped in the frames of a film. The narrative has a sense of jumpout vigor and ruggedness that enthrals you and rivets you to the goings-on.

Deepika resorts to aromatherapy massage

eepika Padukone, who has been giving hit films back-to-back, says whenever she gets tired she finds relief in aromatherapy massage. The face of Parachute Advansed says aromatherapy helps her unwind. “Aromatherapy helps me unwind and relax after a long day at work. “A quick head massage using aromatherapy oils, can have a calming effect and is also one of the easiest and effective destress mechanisms,” Deepika told IANS. However, the Happy New Year star doesn’t follow a fixed routine. “Whenever I feel tired or stressed and need an instant boost I resort to a quick aromatherapy massage,” said the actress, who will be seen in films like Piku and Tamasha.

Sonakshi starts her next project

A

ctor Sonakshi Sinha is all charged up and excited as she has started shooting for filmmaker A.R. Murugadoss’s yet-untitled Hindi action thriller on March 16. The Dabangg actress took to micro-blogging site Twitter, and shared: “My first day of shoot today for @ARMurugadoss sir’s film! Cant wait to be in front of the camera!! Super charged up...Wish me luck.” The film will also feature Sonakshi’s father and veteran actor Shatrughan Sinha in an important role. It will be produced by Fox Star Studios and is the official remake of Tamil sleeper hit Mounaguru. Along with the daughter-father duo, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has been roped in to play the baddie in the film. The rest of the cast hasn’t been finalized for Murugadoss’s third venture in the language after Ghajini and Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty.

Nawazuddin’s advice for young actors

H

is powerful avant-garde roles in offbeat Indian films have set Nawazuddin Siddiqui apart from the trueblue heroes of Bollywood. And that is why the actor, a ‘hero’ in his own right, suggests that newcomers never let go of their “uniqueness”. Nawazuddin, who was last seen as a Machiavellian villain in Sriram Raghavan’s Badlapur, feels that once most actors get a taste of fame, they start behaving in “a hero- type manner”, which takes away their individuality. “Among what young actors bring with them, there is a uniqueness in every one of them. Don’t let go of that when you join the industry. What generally happens is that when people get into the industry, they tend to behave in a particular hero-type manner. “This shouldn’t happen; it takes away one’s uniqueness. When you’re embodying a character, you should have your own uniqueness, that is very important,” Nawazuddin told IANS. His own talent to slip into characters with ease has been seen and appreciated in films like Gangs Of Wasseypur, Kahaani, Kick, The Lunchbox and Talaash.

Sunny Leone to guest star in ‘Aahat’

A

ctor Sunny Leone will make a guest appearance in the upcoming episode of popular horror show Aahat. “The talks of getting Sunny for an episode was going on for a long time. It was due to her prior commitments and busy schedule that she could not shoot for Aahat. But finally she has agreed and has given dates to shoot with us for an episode,” a source close to the production house said in a statement. Although a particular date for the episodic is yet to be finalized, the audience will supposedly witness her in the show by next week.

COMMUNITY LEADER’S DAUGHTER SHAVES HEAD FOR A CAUSE BY A STAFF WRITER

C

HICAGO, IL -- Prominent community leader Harish Bhatt’s daughter Karishma Bhatt is one of the many students who are shaving their heads to cure childhood cancers. “Every 3 minutes, a child is diagnosed with cancer. Help me fund the research that will save their lives”, pleads Bhatt. Students at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) College of Medicine are shaving their heads for St. Baldrick’s, an organization that raises money for children’s cancer research. By shaving their heads, the students are not only raising money, but they help normalize the experience of losing hair during cancer treatment, a process that is quite difficult for adults and children alike. “We spend so much time and effort shaping and coloring and caring for our hair, that it becomes one of the defining aspects of our personality and person identity,” says Shikhar Shah, first-year medical student at UIC. “I’m shaving my head because I want those kids who are suffering from cancer and losing their hair and sense of

ILES, IL -- A former Niles police officer who stole hundreds of dollars from the room of a man who had died at a Niles YMCA residence will be sentenced next month. William Christie, 53, was convicted on charges that in 2009 he stole $1,700 in cash, including more than $500 in coins, from a cardboard box in the room at the Leaning Tower YMCA in Niles last week. Christie was originally called to the facility once a call had been made that the man residing there had died. After Christie arrived at the facility, he sealed off the room and told staff at the YMCA that no one was permitted to enter the room. Over the course of several days, Christie tried to re-enter the room many times, raising the suspicions of the staff who then contacted the Niles Police Department. according to the Tribune report. Surveillance equipment was used to record Christie of the theft. Christie, who resigned from his post as a cop after 27 years the same month of the crime, is set to be sentenced on April 6.

is a noble cause, and it is also a necessary one. Ian Winter, president of the UIC Chicago Cancer Society, which is hosting the St. Baldrick’s event, notes, “Many people do not realize that pediatric cancers are actually an underfunded research area. Much of the money that goes into cancer research is for adult patients, who are much more numerous than pediatric patients. I am shaving my head to raise awareness of this issue, and to try to do my small part in raising money to help close the funding gap.” An estimated 15,780 children were diagnosed with cancer just this past year. UIC medical students are acutely aware of the issues the medical community currently faces, and are dedicated to contributing as much as they possibly can to solving these problems. For children who suffer cancer, although five-year survival rates have increased over the past 35 years, we are still only at an 80% five-year rate for children diagnosed before the age of 20. Charities such as St. Baldrick’s are dedicated to changing this, and UIC students are doing their part on March 21.

The students organizing the event hope to draw UIC students, loved ones, and community members to the event to support the students shaving their heads. Michael Wedoff, who is on the planning committee of this year’s UIC St. Baldrick’s event, states, “No child deserves to have cancer, let alone lose their hair as a result of treatment. Events such as St. Baldrick’s aim to normalize baldness in a fun and exciting manner while raising money for an allimportant cause.” Raising money for children’s cancer

CHINATOWN MARKS KICK BUTTS DAY

C

BY A STAFF WRITER

HICAGO, IL – The Kick Butts Day is a national day of activism held on March 18 that empowers youth to stand out, speak up and seize control against Big Tobacco. Youth from Chicago’s Chinatown neighborhood launched this observance with a gallery reception at the Chinatown public library on March 16 evening. The gallery features a collection of photos with childhood toys to depict the harmful effects of tobacco. The free gallery will be open to the public at the Chinatown Library (2353 S. Wentworth Ave) until March 23. The Kick Butts Day is a nationwide initiative sponsored by the Washington, DC-

based Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, one of the largest non-governmental education and advocacy initiatives aimed at decreasing youth tobacco use in the United States. Chicago has made substantial strides in reducing smoking among youth with youth smoking rates declining by more than 20% in a report published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2014. However, early initiation of youth into smoking still remains high. In Chicago’s Chinatown neighborhoods

EARLY VOTING AND IN-PERSON REGISTRATION

C

BY A STAFF WRITER

HICAGO, IL- Early Voting begins Mon., March 23 at 51 locations in Chicago, and each site also will offer voter-registration. All sites will be open from March 23 through April 4. Hours at all sites will be Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sun., March 29 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Voters don’t need a reason or excuse to use Early Voting, but they do need governmentissued photo ID. Chicago voters may use any early voting site in the city, regardless of where they live. “With April 7 being in the middle of spring break, we expect strong use of Early Voting and Absentee Voting,” said Election Board Chairman Langdon D. Neal. “With Early Voting and Absentee Voting, people may cast their ballots when and where they want. This way, there’s no need to worry about a scheduling conflict on April 7.” Any voter who needs to a file name or address change, or who needs to register for the first time, will need to present two forms of ID, at least one of which shows the voter’s current address. Voters who register or file a name or address change must be ready to vote during that same visit. For more information, Chicago voter may visit chicagoelections.com or call 312.269.7900 (tty 312.269.0027 for the hearing impaired). Voters also may find details in ads in the Sun-Times, RedEye and other publications. Board of Elections - 69 W. Washington St., Lower Level Conference Room 1st Ward - Goldblatts Building 1615 W. HICAGO, IL -At election time, voters often ask questions about campaign signs in their neighborhoods, and about campaign calls that they receive on home or cell phones. Here is some general information on both topics. Q. Can the Election Board remove campaign signs from public property? A. The Election Board has jurisdiction only over signage at polling places used on Election Day or during Early Voting, and even then, only inside the polling place itself and in the “campaign-free zone” that extends 100 feet from the entrance to the polling place. Campaign signs are permitted on polling-place properties so long as they are outside the “campaign-free zone.” During Early Voting, you may call 312-263-1394 with questions about signage at Early Voting sites. On Election Day, you may call Election Central at 312- 269-7870 with questions about campaign signs at polling places. You must call 311 with any other questions about campaign signs on other public properties, including boulevards, intersections, vacant lots, bridges, viaducts, etc. Q. Who can I call about campaign phone calls to my home or cell phone? A. The campaigns that make the calls have sole responsibility for removing you from their lists. If you are bothered by calls, you may register a complaint with the campaign that is calling. The Election Board has no jurisdiction over campaign calls. Also, campaigns do not have to follow the Federal Trade Commission’s “do-not-call” registry. Q. Does the Election Board give out phone numbers? A. No. Campaigns can and do use market-research firms that provide the campaigns with phone numbers that are associated with names and addresses Online transactions and even something like ordering food delivered to a residence can link your unlisted phone number to your name and address.

Hindu Temple, Lemont IL celebrates Holi

BY A STAFF WRITER

EMONT, IL -- The colorful festival of Holi was celebrated at the Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago on March 7 and how! Despite unfavourable weather conditions, revelers thronged the temple grounds by mid-afternoon and soon the whole complex was buzzing with men and women of all ages and of different religions and faiths. As one devote said, it was really people’s spirit that beat the cold and warmed up the weather. The event started with three hours of a cultural program presented by the temple’s cultural committee with over 250 children displaying their talent to a jam- packed audience in the HTGC auditorium. Credit also goes to hard-working volunteers who managed and regulated the traffic and parking of over 1,400 automobiles at two remote parking lots. Six buses were put in service to transport the attendees from the parking lots to the temple and back. Of course, the highlight of the day happened outside in the huge temple

complex with people dancing to Bollywood numbers and sprinkling colors at each other. There were smiling faces all over. The sale of colors was so brisk that temple authorities had to use two tents exclusively for this purpose, thanks to the organizing capacity of the temple’s treasurer Renuka Reddy. This is the only temple in Chicagoland that allows playing with the colors on its campus grounds. There was a continuous supply of tasty snacks outside – Samosas, Bhel Puri and, of course, Masala Chai made fresh in the

kitchen. Complete food service, including lunch and dinner, was made available by a team of Prasadam committee volunteers led by the Chair, Sathya Srinivasan. Many locals from Lemont and Woodridge community also enjoyed the celebration and tasted Indian delicacies. HTGC President Bhima Reddy thanked the attendees for being part of the celebrations and encouraging the cultural activities. He also praised the volunteers for their enthusiasm, good support and for making the occasion a joyous event.

HICAGO, IL -- The Cook County Clerk’s office is looking for community members to serve as suburban election judges for the April 7 consolidated election. It’s a unique opportunity to get paid for serving voters and supporting local democracy. Election Ju d g e s a r e paid $175. In some areas there are opportunities to earn $325 for taking on more responsibility for operating voting equipment. Bilingual judges who speak Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati, Spanish, or Chinese are always needed to assist voters. One may visit cookcountyclerk. com/judges or call 312.603.0965 to learn more and submit an application.

Sleep enough to protect your heart Insufficient sleep causes increase in night time blood pressure, putting you at greater risk of heart diseases IANS, NEW YORK

C

hronic sleep deprivation can increase night time blood pressure, putting you at greater risk of heart diseases, warns new research. “For the first time, we demonstrated that insufficient sleep causes increases in night time blood pressure and dampens nocturnal blood pressure dipping,” said lead author Naima Covassin from Mayo Clinic in the US. The results stemmed from a controlled study that mimicked the sleep loss experienced by many people. “We know high blood pressure, particularly during the night, is one of the major risk factors for heart disease,” Covassin said. ‘We know high In this study, eight healthy normal weight parblood pressure ticipants aged 19 to 36 participated in a 16-day in-patient protocol consisting of a four-day accliduring the night, mation period followed by nine days of either is a major risk sleep restriction (four hours of sleep per night) or factors for heart normal sleep (nine hours of sleep per night), and disease’ three days of recovery. Twenty four blood pressure monitorings at regular intervals were measured at each study phase. The expected fall in blood pressure during the night was suppressed when the people had inadequate sleep. They also found that night time heart rate was higher with sleep restriction than in normal sleep.

Exercise protects motor Flexible work schedule good for all abilities among elderly IANS, LONDON

NEW YORK: Older people, who go for morning walks and mild exercises, protect themselves from the effects of small areas of brain damage that can affect their movement abilities. Many older people have small areas of damage in their brains seen on magnetic resonance imaging as white matter hyperintensities. Higher levels of this damage have been linked to more problems with movement such as difficulty walking. In a paper appeared in the journal Neurology, researchers found that people who were physically active did not have a drop-off in their movement abilities even when they had high levels of brain damage. “These results underscore the importance of efforts to encourage a more active lifestyle in older people to prevent movement problems, which is a major public health challenge,” said study author Debra A. Fleischman from the Rush University Medical Centre in Chicago. Physical activity may create a

F

‘reserve’ that protects motor abilities against the effects of age-related brain damage. The study involved 167 people with an average age of 80. The detrimental effect was even stronger for those with the lowest levels of physical activity. The results remained the same after researchers adjusted for other factors such as BMI and depression.

lexible work schedules aren’t just more convenient, they can really make a difference in the way we feel and for our long-term health, a study reiterates. In today’s fast life, our daily schedules often don’t match our bodies’ natural rhythms. This causes a ‘social jetlag’ as we lose sleep. The condition can be a particular problem for shift workers, who work into the night or on a shifting schedule. “A ‘simple’ re-organisation of shifts according to chronotype allowed workers to sleep more on workday nights,” said Till Roenneberg of the Ludwig-MaximilianUniversity in Germany. “As a consequence, they were also able to sleep less on their free days due to a decreased need for compensating an accumulating sleep loss. This is a double-win situation,” Roenneberg added. The researchers got the chance to implement their ideas about sleep and work schedules in a real-world factory setting. The factory workers were assigned to an early, late, or

intermediate chronotype based on their normal sleep patterns. The researchers then implemented a chronotype-adjusted (“CTA”) shift schedule. Morning people were never made to work late and night owls were never forced to get up early for work. With those adjusted schedules, people felt more satisfied with the sleep they did get and expe-

rienced slight improvements in their general well-being. It also reduced social jetlag — the difference between the midpoint of workers’ sleep on work versus free days - by one hour. While the new findings weren’t exactly a surprise, Roenneberg said it was still “satisfying to find that theory works in the real world”.
