NEW YORK: Long-term, high-dose supplementation of vitamins B6 and B12 — touted by the vitamin industry for increasing energy and improving metabolism — may be associated with a two to four fold increased risk of lung cancer in men, new research has warned. The findings showed that male smokers who take more than 20 mg of Vitamin B6 were three times more likely to develop lung cancer, compared to non-users.

PUDUCHERRY:Malnutrition and alcoholism are the key drivers of tuberculosis (TB) epidemic in southern India, a research based on Puducherry and Tamil Nadu has revealed. An estimated 10.6 million cases of TB occur annually in the world, and India accounts for 27 per cent. The findings showed that malnutrition attributes to more than 61 per cent of TB cases in women, while alcohol was responsible for up to 75 per cent of TB cases in males. Alcohol use results in poor TB treatment adherence and worse TB outcomes, including death, while closer integration between TB control programs and alcohol treatment programs may improve outcomes, the researchers noted.

Breastmilk may ward off bacterial infections IANS, NEW YORK

rotective sugars found in breastmilk can help protect babies against bacterial infections, researchers have found. Group B strep bacteria, whose common host are pregnant women, remain the leading cause of severe infections in newborns worldwide, which often leads to sepsis or pneumonia, and in severe cases death, because they do not have fully developed defense mechanisms. The study showed that sugars can act as anti-biofilm agents, which is the first example of carbohydrates in human milk having this function.

“One of the remarkable properties of these compounds is that they are clearly non-toxic, unlike most antibiotics,” Townsend added. Nearly 10 years ago, researchers had found that pregnant women play host to group B strep bacteria and the pathogen can be transmitted to infants through breastfeeding. But because most babies do not become infected with group B strep, they wanted to see if some women’s breast milk contained protective compounds that specifically fight that bacteria. In a new study, the team members are testing more than a dozen additional milk samples to see if breastmilk sugars are effective.

‘Empathyless’ Trump visits Texas

The death toll in the catastrophic hurricane Harvey in the US state has increased to 37 IANS, WASHINGTON

Hurricane Harvey toll increases to 37

U

S President Donald Trump visited Texas this week to survey the widespread damage caused by Hurricane Harvey, but was slammed for not meeting or mentioning any storm victims. The President and First Lady Melania Trump visited Corpus Christi, where Hurricane Harvey first made landfall on August 25. Trump later went to Austin for meetings with government officials and to survey the damage, as search-and-rescue operations were in full swing across the state, CNN reported. Trump will not be visiting Houston, the White House said as he did not want his visit to “disrupt” the emergency response. The catastrophic natural disaster has so far claimed 20 lives and forced tens and thousands of people to flee deluged homes, media reports said. Trump pledged to mount the best ever relief and recovery effort, surrounded by grim-faced state authorities in Austin. “Probably there’s never been anything so expensive in our country’s history,” Trump said at a subterranean command centre. “There’s never been anything so historic in terms of damage and in terms of ferocity.” Trump called the storm “epic” and said he wanted the relief effort to stand as an example of how to respond to a

storm. “We want to do it better than ever before.” The President, though, dispensed no hugs or displays of compassion to victims of the storm, whom he did not meet. There were questions ahead of Trump’s trip about whether he would convey empathy for a region in crisis — and a few critics thought he failed to deliver, the Hill magazine reported. Trump’s responses were more focused on the power of the storm and his administration’s response than on the millions of Texans hit by the devastating storm. As of late Tuesday local time, Trump had yet

Transgenders can stay in US military for now: Mattis WASHINGTON: US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis has said that transgender people already in the military will continue to be allowed to serve pending a study on President Donald Trump’s proposed ban. “In the interim, current policy with respect to currently serving members will remain in place,” Mattis said in a statement. He said he would create a panel of experts that would include members of the departments of Defense and Homeland Security “to provide advice and recommendations” on the implementation of the measure, TIME magazine reported. Trump had announced via Twitter last month that he would no longer allow transgender soldiers to serve in the military, arguing that the government “cannot be burdened with the

tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail.” Trump signed a memo last week reversing the Obama administration’s 2016 decision to allow transgender people to serve in the military, giving the Pentagon six months to come up with a plan for those who are currently serving. But he left on Mattis to decide whether those already in the armed forces would be allowed to continue to serve. —IANS

to mention those killed, visit those affected or call on other Americans to help or directly encourage donations to relief organizations. “There was something missing from what President Trump said, that’s the empathy for the people who suffer,” Ari Fleischer, former President George W. Bush’s press secretary, told Fox News. The President was also criticized for remarking on the “turnout” and size of the crowd that gathered for his meeting in Corpus Christi — though the hundreds gathered clapped and cheered his appearance. The white “USA” hat the Presi-

dent wore (which is advertised for $40 on his site) during the address prompted a backlash from those who accused him of gratuitous marketing. Hurricane Harvey’s damage was expected to run well into the tens of billions of dollars, making it one of the costliest US natural disasters. City officials were preparing to temporarily house some 19,000 people, with thousands more expected to flee the area. The mayor of Houston announced an indefinite 12 a.m. to 5 a.m. curfew amid reports of looting, armed robberies and people impersonating police officers.

WASHINGTON: The death toll in the catastrophic hurricane Harvey that lashed through the US state of Texas has increased to 37, the media reported. The unrelenting storm that made landfall on August 25 unleashed its wrath on a wide swath east of Houston, leaving thousands stranded in flooded homes and forcing the evacuation of a nursing facility and even an emergency shelter where residents had sought refuge, reports CNN. The storm left record-setting rain in Harris County — which saw 19 deaths — before unleashing 15 inches in the Beaumont area, Texas Governor Greg Abbott said. But for the first time since the weekend, authorities said, the flooding in Houston, the fourth largest US city, is slowly receding in some areas. Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said authorities have received 60,000 to 70,000 calls for help. “We just pray that the body count won’t rise significantly,” CNN quoted Acevedo as saying. Harvey was still threatening to dump an additional 3 to 6 inches of rain from northern Louisiana into western Kentucky, forecasters said.

Trump begins tax reform campaign IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump began his campaign to achieve comprehensive tax reform, although such an overhaul of the tax code must go through Congress for approval. Trump launched his campaign with a rally at a Springfield, Missouri, manufacturing plant this week promising workers lower taxes, reports Efe news. “Our tax system should benefit loyal hard-working Americans and their families,” Trump said, promising “to work with Congress, Republicans and Democrats alike” on the matter and claiming that his tax reform plans are bipartisan. “So let’s put, or at least try to put, the partisan posturing behind us and come together as Americans,” Trump said, going on to declare that his tax overhaul plan — which he called “The American Model” — will create “millions and millions” of new jobs, bring back “trillions of dollars in wealth that’s parked over-

seas” and give the US a “competitive edge” in world markets. With Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross at his side, along with other members of his Cabinet, Trump wanted to make his speech a milestone marking the beginning of his efforts to achieve one of his key political goals. The president said the US needs a tax code that is simple, fair and

easy to understand and that eliminates legal loopholes and the complexities of the current tax system, but he did not provide any details about how he intends to achieve it. He said that lowering taxes will increase the salaries of the working class. Ideally he wants to reduce corporate taxes from their current 35 per cent level to 15 per cent and also to include an increase in deductions for citizens.

‘99% of scrapped notes returned’

Demonetization has helped reduce cash in the economy, increase digitization, expand the tax base, check black money, and integrating the informal economy with the formal one, says Finance Minister

evealing the low efficacy of last November’s demonetization of highvalue currency, the RBI said on Wednesday that of the Rs 15.44 trillion of notes taken out of circulation, Rs 15.28 trillion, or almost 99 percent, had returned to the system by way of deposits by the public. “Subject to future corrections based on verification process when completed, the estimated value of SBNs received as on June 30, 2017 is Rs 15.28 trillion,” the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said in its annual report for the last fiscal. According to the RBI, 89 million pieces of the banned Rs 1,000 totalling Rs 8,900 crore had not been returned (by March 2017) out of 6,858 million such notes amounting to Rs 6.85 trillion. BRIEFS Indian economy's growth slows down NEW DELHI: India's GDP growth for the first quarter of the current fiscal ended June slowed down to 5.7 percent, from 6.1 percent reported for the fourth quarter of 2016-17, official data showed on Thursday. According to data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO), the GDP for Q1 stood at Rs 31.10 trillion, or a growth of 5.7 percent, compared with 6.1 percent in the fourth quarter of the last fiscal. The drop in growth was even sharper compared to the like quarter a year ago when the country's GDP grew at 7.9 percent.

A total of 660 children have died at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi, its Director B.L. Sherwal said. Another 164 deaths have been reported in the last four months from Jamshedpur’s Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital. “This year 4,855 children were admitted and 4,195 were discharged after being cured,” Sherwal said. “(A total of) 660 children could not be saved. demonetization of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. The central bank did not provide separate figures in respect of the banned Rs 500 notes which had not returned. In the report on fake Indian currency notes (FICA), RBI said the past fiscal had yielded 7,62,072

NEW DELHI: The Congress party on Thursday termed demonetization as the “biggest scam” and accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of misleading the people, saying that he had repeatedly made “false statements” on the decision to junk high-value currency. Addressing a press conference here, senior Congress leader Anand Sharma said the Prime Minister had made “false remarks” in his Independence Day speech about the quantum of black money that was unearthed after Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes were scrapped on November 8 last year. Sharma said demonetization had led to a loss of GDP of Rs 2.25 trillion and the Prime Minister was “directly responsible”.

pieces of FICN, which was higher than the 6,32,926 such notes seized in 2015-16. The RBI spent Rs 7,965 crore on printing new currency notes in 2016-17. Denying that demonetization failed to achieve its objectives, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Wednesday said the measure had succeeded in reducing cash in the economy, increasing digitization, expanding the tax base, checking black money and in moving towards integrating the informal economy with the formal one. “The objective of demonetization was that India is a high-cash economy and that scenario needs to be altered,” Jaitley told reporters in New Delhi following the release of the RBI annual report for the last fiscal giving the figures, for the first time, of demonetized notes returned to the system.

ndia and China ended their 75day-long tense standoff in Doklam with both agreeing to withdraw troops from the disputed region ahead of next week’s BRICS summit in China which Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to attend. However, the announcement of the disengagement by India, and later confirmed by China, was marked by drama, with Beijing claiming that while Indian troops had withdrawn Chinese troops would continue to patrol the area in the tri-junction with Bhutan. Earlier, there was confusion over the term of the sentence, with reports that Ram Rahim was sentenced to 10 years in jail. Later, his counsel clarified the position. Judge Jagdeep Singh had on Friday held the Dera chief guilty of rape and criminal intimidation of the two female disciples in 1999. The complaint in the cases was filed in 2002. The self-styled godman was in tears and pleaded for mercy as the judge sentenced him to 10 years jail in each of the two counts of rape and criminal intimidation. The Dera chief was convicted in the CBI court in Panchkula on Friday.

Doklam Dispute: India needs an endless solution Doklam was not India’s last confrontation with China and thus, there is no cause for our soldiers, and political leadership to become complacent ADMIRAL ARUN PRAKASH (RETD), NEW DELHI

A

ccustomed as we are to shrill hyperbole in India’s public discourse, the description of the tense Himalayan face-off as the “incident at Doklam” and its denouement as “expeditious disengagement of border personnel” by the Ministry of External Affairs came across as refreshing examples of phlegmatic understatement. The diplomatic finesse shown by India stood in stark contrast to the Chinese spokesperson’s gauche declaration that India had “pulled back all the trespassing personnel and equipment”. The Chinese do not risk the outcome of a conflict on a single clash; they plan multiple strategies and the patient accumulation of small gains. Doklam was, by no means, India’s last confrontation with China and there is, thus, no cause for our soldiers, diplomats and political leadership to become complacent — for four reasons.

Firstly, our 1962 military defeat was due to the egregious misreading of China’s intent by India’s political leadership. Fiftyfive years on, clarity and resolve are still lacking vis-a-vis our strategic stance and policies towards an

The Chinese do not risk the outcome of a conflict on a single clash; they plan multiple strategies and the patient accumulation of small gains increasingly bellicose China. This seeming diffidence is partly rooted in a fear of the unknown, our profound ignorance about this huge neighbor. We have neither created a substantive pool of Mandarin speakers, nor fostered many organizations dedicated to researching China’s history, economy, industry and strategic

thought. With bizarre perversity, we have been spurning the huge window, into China, that a willing and cooperative Taiwan has been offering to us, for years. We need to stop groping in the dark and create strategies to counter China’s long-term intentions. Secondly, China, translating its enormous economic gains into coercive military power, expects neighboring nations to voluntarily submit to Chinese hegemony. Thirdly, while patting ourselves on the back for deft diplomacy, let us not forget that we have had a close call. While our gallant armed forces could certainly have given a “bloody nose” (so eagerly sought by militant TV anchors) to the PLA on many fronts, a general war or even a limited clash would have been equally damaging to both nations and their economies. Finally, while the vision of China’s grandiose, “one-belt one road” (OBOR) may be impressive, the project relies on ports, seaborne commerce and sea lanes. However, India’s non-participation in it is causing concern in Beijing.

Indian-American lawmakers slam transgender military ban WASHINGTON: Prominent IndianAmerican lawmakers have criticized US President Donald Trump after he signed a memo instructing the Defense Department to stop accepting transgender people into the armed forces. The presidential memorandum signed this week officially requested the Pentagon to develop an implementation plan for the ban by February 21, 2018, to be put in place on March 23, 2018. Slamming the move, Democratic US Representative Ami Bera said: “If you wear an American military uniform, you deserve the respect

and support of the Commander-inChief... Unfortunately, Donald Trump is more comfortable peddling in discrimination and bigotry, and he’s shown Ami Bera that he is unable to support our troops.” “Removing these men and women from service or refusing recruits because of who they are goes against every American value they swear to defend,” said Bera, who is the longest-serving Indian American currently in the Congress,” Bera said in a press release.

WASHINGTON: Indian-Americans who are living in safer Texas neighborhoods are helping people affected by the devastating Hurricane Harvey by offering them shelter, preparing food for thousands and distributing essential relief aid. A massive number of IndianAmericans in the Greater Houston Area have been affected by the ongoing flooding. The Indian Americans formed numerous volunteer groups to help the victims using social media to communicate details about which family is affected in each locality, News India Times community newspaper reported.

Temples, gurdwaras and mosques all opened their doors in a massive effort to help people who lost their home in the catastrophic disaster. Indian restaurants were also reaching out to people with free food. Approximately 100,000 Indian-Americans and Indians live in the Greater Houston Area, according to Kishore Rama Raju, who lives in the relatively less affected area of Eldridge in Houston. Raju told the newspaper that he along with his group of friends through a Facebook account — HoustonDesiFriends — operationalized a rescue and relief effort with 100 volunteers. —IANS

Kang denies harassment charges IANS, TORONTO

n Indo-Canadian MP from the ruling Liberal Party, who has been accused of sexual harassment by a female staffer, has denied the charges levelled against him and vowed to defend his reputation “at all costs”. Punjab-born Darshan Kang, 66, who immigrated to Canada in 1970 and currently represents a constituency from Calgary, has been accused of sexual overtures by a 24year-old female staffer who works in his constituency office in Calgary. The allegations involving the Liberal MP initially surfaced in mid-August. According to Ottawabased newspaper the Hill Times,

Darshan Kang (Photo: dkang.liberal.ca)

the staffer filed the complaint in June with Chief Liberal Whip Pablo Rodriguez. According to the father of the female staffer, Kang sexually harassed her over four to five years when he subjected her to “unwelcome hugs” and even tried to hold

her hand during car rides. The father alleged that once Kang brought her to a hotel room in Ottawa, offered her wine and then tried to remove her jacket. Kang issued a statement on August 29 claiming innocence even as a new allegation surfaced that he tried to buy the woman’s silence by offering her $100,000. The opposition National Democratic Party urged Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to immediately suspend the Calgary MP from the Liberal caucus until an investigation was completed. Meanwhile, Trudeau said he will not offer any comment until an investigation is completed. Kang remains a member of the Liberal caucus.

there are over 50 old forms of Tamil dance which very few know. These were showcased here for our

future Tamil generation and Canadians," said Canadian Tamil Congress spokesperson David

Poopalapillai. A big attraction at the festival was one the two lifeboats in which first Tamil

refugees (numbering 155) fleeing the Sri Lankan ethnic conflict had reached Canadian shores in August 1986. It was the first time after 1912 that Canada accepted boat refugees who happened to be Tamils, Poopalapillai said. "These refugees had reached Germany from Sri Lanka. From Germany, they took a ship, but were dumped in the ocean in two lifeboats to fend for themselves. Luckily, they drifted into Canadian waters off Newfoundland and were saved by Canadian fishermen," said the Tamil spokesperson. The Canadian Prime Minister posed with some of those who were on the two lifeboats.

Trump’s comments come just days after he said that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was “starting to respect” the US. The US military on Thursday sent strategic bombers and stealth fighter jets to South Korea for a joint bomb-dropping drill.

The KCNA said the launch was in direct response to the joint USSouth Korean military drills, as well as to mark the anniversary of the Japan-Korea treaty of 1910, which saw Japan annex the Korean peninsula. Kim has also ordered more rocket drills targeting the region, the state media said. South Korean presidential spokesman Park Su-hyun said in a statement that the country’s President Moon Jae-in and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe both now believe “pressure on North Korea should be raised to its limit so that North Korea will voluntarily come to the table for dialogue”. Around 18,000 Rohingyas have fled to Bangladesh IANS, DHAKA

T

he UN’s International Organization for Migration said on Wednesday that around 18,000 Rohingyas have fled to Bangladesh from Myanmar in the last few days due to an outbreak of violence that has left over 100 people dead. “So far 18,000 people entered Bangladesh since last Friday (...) This 18,000 is an estimated number,” head of the IOM office in Bangladesh district of Cox’s Bazar Sanjukta Sahany was quoted by Efe news as saying. “So far we have been able to absorb these people with life-saving support.”

The fresh wave of violence affecting the Rohingyas has already claimed the lives of 110 people since August 25. (Photo: Xinhua)

The influx of refugees comes despite Dhaka’s reluctance to accept them and attempts by its security forces, deployed along the

bank of the Naf River, which acts as a natural border between Bangladesh and Myanmar, to try to stop the members of the

Muslim minority from entering. Many Rohingyas have also died while trying to reach Bangladesh. “We recovered four bodies today (Wednesday) from the Naf River near Shah Parir Dwip,” an official of the Border Guard Bangladesh said. The fresh wave of violence affecting the Rohingyas has already claimed the lives of 110 people since August 25. Fighting flared up again when the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army carried out a series of attacks against police posts and military bases in Rakhine in western Myanmar and the armed forces were ordered to respond.

Jhajharia won gold in men’s javelin F46 event at the 2004 Paralympics in Athens with a then

It was the first gold medal for India at the Paralympics since Murlikant Petkar finished at the top of the podium in men’s 50m freestyle swimming at Heidelberg, Germany, in 1972. Jhajharia repeated the feat at the Rio Paralympics last year, winning the gold and rewriting his own eight-year world record with a throw of 63.97m. Jhajharia is the first para-athlete

to be honored with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna — the highest sports award in the country. Sardar, meanwhile, became the second hockey star to be conferred the Khel Ratna after the legendary Dhanraj Pillay who received the award in the year 2000. Sardar, who made his international debut against arch-rivals Pakistan in 2006, was named captain of the Indian hockey squad after the debacle at the 2012 Olympics in London where the team finished last in the 12-nation field.

BY ZOFEEN MAQSOOD

CHICAGO CHARMER: She is a woman of varied interests. An economics major, a former World Bank economist, a successful management consultant and a proponent of women’s rights in workplaces – Rohini Dey, one of the best known Indian-origin achievers in America, who has been successfully striding these laurels has also lent a unique tour-de-force to the Indian dining scene in the country. With her immensely popular signature restaurant, Vermilion, in Chicago and in NYC, Dey has been consistently redefining the perception of Indian cuisine in the world epicurean circles.

CREATING A

CULINARY CULTURE from there.” She adds, “Besides, my mom is a great cook and growing up, a lot of our memories were centered around good Indian food.” However it was not this love for food that brought Rohini to America – a melting pot of cuisines and cultures. Rohini laughs, “Yes, I came to America for my Phd program after completing my masters from the Delhi School of Economics. I enrolled for the doctorate at the University of Texas and I nursed a childhood dream of working with the World Bank and I was lucky enough to get that break.” Before helming the food business, Rohini scaled formidable heights on the corporate ladder. She worked with the World Bank in Washington D.C. where she looked after foreign investment policy. During this time, she also co-authored a book and moved to Mc Kinsey & Co. in a management consultancy project. She worked there for five years before finally letting her passion override the practicality of her secure career and she branched out in the food industry. MAKING FUSION FASHIONABLE There is a certain bon-vivant energy in restaurateur Rohini Dey’s voice, when she talks to us on an early Tuesday afternoon. She has a packed day ahead -- that includes tastings at her upmarket eatery Vermilion, overseeing the accounting and HR details of her two establishments in Chicago and NYC, looking after some specifics at the James Beard Foundation Women in Culinary Leadership Program that she co-founded amongst many other legal and social engagements that she has to wade through the day. But Dey, not only makes it all sound like a breeze but also looks forward to accomplish it all just in time to be home to stir up a comfort dinner comprising Bengali fish curry or a Chinese stir-fry for her two teenage daughters. Rohini Dey, who opened the now iconic eatery Vermilion back in 2003 in Chicago has in many ways been single handedly responsible for introducing the concept of luxe Indian fusion dining in America. When she started out more than a decade ago, Indian food in the West was synonymous with greasy curries and a cheap ‘tikka’ takeout alternative. Her maiden foray into the unforgivable and highly demanding food industry paid off and quickly catapulted her eatery into the coveted gourmand terrene.

But how did a Delhi girl who was charting a remarkable corporate career in America land up in this bubbling cauldron quite literally! In her trademark self-assured style, Dey shares, “When I thought about foraying into the restaurant business, I was working with McKinsey & Co. Career wise I was at a very satisfactory position and I enjoyed it immensely. I would say, more than anything else it was this passion to educate people about the wonders of Indian food and to bust the stereotypes associated with Indian cuisine that led me to take this up seriously.” GROWING UP, GOURMET Talking about her formative years, Rohini shares how her family instilled in her an appreciation for cuisines and cultures. She shares, “I grew up in India and by virtue of my dad’s work, we traveled a lot and lived in 14 different cities. Everywhere we went we noticed how food of a certain region had an interesting history and learnt the food stories intertwined to that place. Not only was it fun to discover these connections in small parts of India it also made me respect the food philosophy of a certain place. Perhaps subconsciously the exposure to food began

More than a decade ago when Rohin took that rather brave call of serving up fusio cuisine, experimental Indian food as we kno today was not a popular concept. The idea o infusing Latin twist to her menu was a sma strategy on her part to draw in people who ma be scared of Indian food. On why she cho fusion, Rohini says, “It’s a misconceptio that Indian food cannot work well in a fusio concept. Historically if you see, Indian foo has always have had external influence Whether it is the Mongol inspiration or th Portuguese inspiration along the Malab region or Mughal influences in the norther part, you will always find one element from another territory so wonderfully blendin into another.” Talking about picking up Lati elements, she explains, “It was my instinct an it came from my own experiences. If you wa into any Hispanic or Mexican marketplac you will see so many similarities to our ow Indian ingredients from tamarind to mang to cilantro or plantains. I believe we ha a lot of complementing elements. Besid studying food influences across the world such a fascinating discovery. KITCHEN CONUNDRUMS But no matter how glamorous, serving food as art on plate may seem, the fact remains that the kitchen grind takes a heavy toll and comes with its share of sweat and blood. So how did this young lady with no previous background in business leave alone in food, take the plunge? Rohini smilingly acknowledges the challenge that she undertook back then but credits her corporate background for helping her learn the tricks. She says, “I could not have done all of this without my McKinsey training. I would say that it was there that I learnt a lot about integrating a project and the basics that help you build anything from scratch.” On a personal front too the idea of giving up a job most would kill for to start a precarious business seemed like a daunting task. She shares, “There were apprehensions. No one in my family has been into business and moving into restaurant business that has a 90 percent risk was something that did weigh on the mind. raised money through investors and debtfinancing. I also took a 2-month-leave from my work to understand the food market. During this time I visited a restaurateur in LA and closely observed his life. I also spoke to more than 40 restaurant owners to get to the bottom of what lay ahead. During this time I also worked closely with my chef Ambrish to curate the entire menu however around that time Ambrish got an offer of a position as a faculty with an impending permanent residency in the US. He explained to me as to why he couldn’t be with me for long and I understood it completely and thus began my quest once more for a chef. After interviewing dozens and dozens of them I identified Maneet Chauhan who was a young graduate from Culinary Institute of America before we opened Vermilion in Chicago. Vermilion received rave reviews from the very start and within no time the restaurant was written about as the Best New Restaurant by Chicago Magazine, USA Today, Travel & Leisure, Bon Appetit and many other prestigious publications. Rohini’s acumen was also recognized and she has been featured in New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Chicago Tribune, Time Magazine, BBC World and several other media outlets. was suitable for a culinary experience such as this one.” But not the one to sit back and relax on

the laurels, Rohini had her eyes set on her next target – NYC. She says, “For any restaurateur opening an outlet in New York is the ultimate. It’s like climbing the Mt Everest,” she laughs. And Rohini did manage to ride this culinary vertex too albeit with a few impediments. Rohini expanded her ambitious project and opened Vermilion in Manhattan, NYC. But things took a bit of a rough and tumble here. It was 2008; the peak of financial crisis and Rohini’s eatery spread across an impressive 12,000 square feet didn’t receive a glowing reception. Times were tough and luxuries such as fine dining appeared hedonistic when big financial institutions were crashing. However Rohini chose to face the battle, reworked her menu and even recounted the revamp in a reality TV series titled Consumed: The Real Restaurant Business on CNBC. The reviews grew stronger and Vermilion in NYC was able to live up to the reputation it earned in Chicago. Today with two highly esteemed eateries in two of the biggest cities in the US, Rohini looks back at the journey with a deep satisfaction. FAMILY LIFE On the personal front, Rohini is married to her childhood sweetheart who heads the retail practice in the Americas with McKinsey & Co. She recalls, “We went back to India for our big wedding and life with Sajal has been an enriching experience. While we worked together in McKinsey our sectors never overlapped. He encouraged me to follow my instincts with Vermilion and put his trust in me.” The couple spends their weekends playing squash, chess and exploring the food scene in Chicago with their two daughters. The family of four understandably has a refined taste in food and have a few comfort food spots in the city. While they head to

Rohini also shares that food and travel go hand in hand in her family and they make it a point to visit 3-6 destinations in a year. Having already pinned 50 countries across the globe, the family shares that their holidays are centered on food and culture. Talking about their recent holiday to South Korea, Rohini says, “It was revealing to discover a highly evolved Korean cuisine which is so much more than just khimchi and is one of the few cuisines that is intrepidly spicy.” While works remains demanding and Rohini often flies to New York to oversee the operations, the family also takes out time to visit India and touch base with their roots when they can. Rohini admits that even though she is totally at home in Chicago she still considers Delhi an integral part of her life. She says,” My parents still live there, I did my college there and every time I go there it feels like home too.

‘Arjun Reddy’: Intense, raw and unbelievably honest Film: Arjun Reddy; Director: Sandeep Reddy Vanga; Cast: Vijay Devarakonda, Shalini Pandey, Rahul Ramakrishna and Sanjay Swaroop; Rating: *****

I

f you like the kind of cinema that moves you, quite literally shakes you from within, Arjun Reddy is for you. By the end of the film, it stirs up an emotional storm deep inside with its raw, intense and honest portrayal of love and suffering. In the opening shot, we are introduced to Arjun and Preethi, and we’re told they are two bodies united by one soul. But theirs is not the kind of love story we are used to, especially Telugu audiences who

A still from the film ‘Arjun Reddy’.

are used to cheering for 50-plus stars romancing heroines half their age, singing duets in the Alps. The love in Arjun Reddy is pure, unabashedly bold and hard-hitting. It touches the soul in ways it can’t be

explained. It gives the story a modern-day Devdas twist, while making the overall cinematic experience a journey to remember forever. This is the story of the lead character Arjun Reddy, and yet there

isn’t a story, a structure to be precise, to follow and anticipate what might happen next. It’s the rise, fall and rise of Arjun, and his journey of love and suffering, is nothing short of poetic and heart wrenching. Writer-director Sandeep Reddy Vanga doesn’t make us sympathize with Arjun’s character, and that’s a relief and achievement by itself. He makes us understand Arjun’s love and pain from a very personal and subconscious standpoint, striking an emotional chord. Vijay Devarakonda is the life of Arjun Reddy. He breathes life into the character and it’s impossible to imagine anyone else in his shoes. Be it his passion, love, and rage; he portrays these several layers of his character with unparalleled realism. — Haricharan Pudipeddi

Meanwhile, as Mumbai struggled to return to normalcy after the deluge, Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray praised his party-ruled BrihanMumbai Municipal Corp (BMC) for “good work”. Akin to the great floods of July 2005 when the city was buried under 945 mm of rainfall on a single day, Mumbaikars were mostly left to fend for themselves on Tuesday when it rained about 316 mm, paralyzing the megapolis. However, Thackeray said all BMC officials and departments did

a good job given the extreme rainfall which was not anticipated. He denied that drainage cleaning work was not completed and blamed the ongoing works on Metro Railway and other megaprojects by multiple agencies with different jurisdictions as partly responsible for the flooding in the city. Immediately thereafter, Mumbai BJP President Ashish Shelar demanded “an apology” for disrupting the lives of Mumbaikars. “Where were the people ruling the BMC hiding? In manholes? The BJP leaders and workers helped the people as a duty,” Shelar said.

TN Governor playing politics: Opposition IANS, CHENNAI

he DMK and other opposition parties in Tamil Nadu accused Governor Ch. Vidyasagar Rao of playing a “partisan” role and refusing to convene a meeting of the Assembly for the AIADMK government to prove its majority. First a delegation of four parties including Vidhthalai Chiruttaigal Katchi (VCK) met the Governor and demanded that he direct Chief Minister K. Palaniswamy to face a floor test in the Assembly. VCK leader Thirumavalavan told the media that the Governor told them the ball was not in his court because the 19 AIADMK MLAs who have expressed lack of confidence in the Chief Minister were still in that party and the issue was still within AIADMK domain. “We told him the ball was in his court. The Governor said the ball

has not come to his court. This reflects the position of the BJP at the Centre which is against the fall of the AIADMK government,” Thirumavalavan said adding the Governor was trying to pass the buck. “We have told the Governor that the action of the 19 MLAs amounts to their losing confidence in the

government and it was his democratic duty to ask for proving the government’s majority in the House,” he said. Reacting to the reported remarks of the Governor, DMK leader M.K. Stalin told reporters that Rao was behind the coming together of the two factions of the AIADMK as he

was acting at the behest of the Modi government which was using agencies like the Income Tax department and Enforcement Directorate to threaten AIADMK leaders. Stalin said the Governor was playing politics. He said the Governor should follow the precedent set by him earlier this year when he directed a floor test after O. Panneerselvam withdrew support of 10 MLAs in the government. The Leader of the Opposition said a delegation of MPs comprising DMK, Congress, CPI-M, CPI and Muslim League would be meeting President Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday to press their demand for an immediate floor test in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. Echoing similar sentiments, V. Pugazhendi from the Dinakaran faction of the AIADMK said “terrified” AIADMK leaders were going around meeting Union Ministers to avoid a dismissal of the government.

BRIEFS TV Show’Pehredaar Piya Ki’ pulled off air MUMBAI: Sony Entertainment Television said it has pulled its controversial show Pehredaar Piya Ki off air. The development was effective from August 28, according to an official statement issued on behalf of the channel on August 29. “We are pulling off our programme Pehredaar Piya Ki from television. While we understand that the decision to end this serial will be disappointing to those whose creative energies are vested in it, namely, its crew and cast, we (as a channel) are convinced that we will be better served by focusing instead on developing viewer interest in our upcoming, new shows.” a statement said. The show is produced by Shashi Sumeet Productions.

‘A Gentleman’: More ‘risky’ to watch than ‘sundar’ Film: “A Gentleman”; Directors: Raj-DK; Cast: Sidharth Malhotra, Jaqueline Fernandez, Suneil Shetty, Rajit Kapur, Darshan Kumar and Supriya Pilgaonkar; Rating: *1/2

G

aurav (Sidharth Malhotra), an Indian boy settled in Miami, with a secure nineto-five job, his own sprawling house and mini-van, is every inch the “sundar and susheel” boy any parent would want for their daughter. But alas, Kaavya (Jaqueline Fernandez), his friend and colleague, the girl he has a soft spot for, finds him too nice, safe and boring. May be, then, he should be

a bit risky? Enter Rishi, (Sidharth Malhotra) an orphan, a tough guy who works for a secret agent group, Unit X, led by ‘Colonel’ (Suneil Shetty), and you see the risky bit too. But Rishi wants to give up this

dare-devilry and lead a normal life with a family and home. How he manages to change his life and the extent to which he succeeds, is essentially what this two hours-plus action-comedy film is all about. Directors Raj and DK manage

to infuse a lot of gloss, exciting action and color into the film, which is racy, but sorely lacks a plot. The drama element and emotional quotient are missing. The narrative is deliberately confusing but does not help to keep the audience engrossed. The characters lack depth and there is no chemistry between the lead pair, although they are attractive on screen. The humor, injected by way of some witty lines as well as the situational comedy owing to the mistaken identity, is the only saving grace, else the writing lacks gravitas. Sidharth, as the quintessential good boy Gaurav and the rustic and reckless Rishi, performs with conviction and slips into each avatar distinctively.

This drug may cut lung cancer risk

A study shows that the drug called Canakinumab reduces the risk of lung cancer, stroke and cardiovascular death IANS, NEW DELHI/NEW YORK

W

ith researchers finding in a trial involving 10,000 adults that an existing antiinflammatory drug has the potential to lower lung cancer risk, doctors in India have expressed hope for better tackling of the critical disease. According to a study published in the journal Lancet, death from cancer was reduced by half in a group of people who received the highest dosage of the drug Canakinumab and also led to 67 per cent reduction in lung cancer incidence.

Canakinumab was found to lower inflammation, without affecting cholesterol level — which was the widely used approach for many years. It was also found effective against heart attack, stroke and cardiovascular death. “As a rule, anti-inflammatory drugs have a role in prevention of cancer. With the rise in pollution levels across the country, there will be added burden on the lungs of those who may be suffering for lung cancer,” Dinesh Katiyar, Senior Consultant (Surgical Oncologist) at Venkateshwar Hospital, told IANS. “Any drug that can prevent lung

cancer in India will definitely be welcome,” Katiyar added. The drug marketed by drug major Novartis as Ilaris was earlier designed to treat gout and rheumatoid arthritis, having high inflammatory markers similar to those seen in cancer and heart disease patients. Hence, when investigated for the cancers and heart disease, those on the medium dose of Canakinumab had a 15 per cent lower chance of another heart attack, a stroke or a heart-related death over the next four years. “The finding has opened the possibility of including this drug for

NEW YORK: Love to gorge on dark chocolates? According to a study, compounds found in cocoa — the main ingredient of chocolate — can actually help prevent as well as treat diabetes. The findings, published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, showed that cocoa compound named epicatechin monomers helps the body release more insulin and responds to increased blood glucose better. “Epicatechin monomers protects the beta cells, increasing their ability to deal with oxidative stress,” said lead author Jeffery Tessem, assistant professor at Brigham Young University (BYU), US. “The epicatechin monomers are making the mitochondria in the beta cells stronger, which produces more ATP (a cell’s energy source), which then results in more insulin being released,” Tessem added. Another study from the University of Pisa in Italy showed that eating dark chocolates enriched with extra virgin olive oil may boost the level of “good” cholesterol and lower blood pressure .

This drug still can’t be recommended for clinical use pending further clinical trials,” he added.

omen who are genetically predisposed to the risk of Alzheimer’s are more susceptible to developing the disease during a critical 10-year span in their lives than men with similar genetic risks, researchers have found. The findings showed that among women and men between ages 65 and 75 having one copy of ApoE4, women — more than 10 years after the start of menopause — were at increased risk compared with men. The study contradicts the previously held view that women with one copy of Apolipoprotein E4 allele (ApoE4) — the main genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer

— were diagnosed with the disease 50 per cent more often than men with the same genetic profile. The reasons that might underlie these sex differences could be

linked to physiologic changes associated with menopause and estrogen loss, the researchers said in the paper published in the journal JAMA Neurology.

“Menopause and plummeting estrogen levels, which on average begins at 51, may account for the difference,” said Judy Pa, Assistant Professor at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. For the study, the team analyzed 27 research studies with data on nearly 58,000 participants, between the ages of 55 and 85, to determine how sex and APOE genotype affect the risks for developing mild cognitive impairment (MCI) — often the transitional phase from cognitively normal aging to dementia, and Alzheimer’s. Further, women also appeared to be at increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s between the ages of 55 and 70 compared to men.

Mothers with pre-eclampsia, beware!

High salt intake may double heart failure

“The good news is that we can use these findings to apply earlier interventions for risk factors before cardiovascular disease presents,” Garovic added. For the study, published in the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings, the team identified postmenopausal women with histories of pre-eclampsia and others with normotensive — or normal blood pressure — pregnancy histories. Carotid artery intima-media thickness or the thickness of the artery walls, was measured in addition to blood tests. The artery wall thickness of women with preeclampsia was greater than those with normotensive pregnancies.

LONDON: Love to eat salted wafers, nuts, french fries and other processed foods? Beware, according to a study, high salt intake is associated with a doubled risk of heart failure. The findings showed that people who consume more than 13.7 grams of salt daily may be at two times higher risk of heart failure compared to those consuming less than 6.8 grams. The salt-related increase in heart failure risk was independent of blood pressure level, the researchers said. — IANS

A

high blood pressure condition that typically threatens the lives of some pregnant women may also increase their risk of developing heart disease later in life, researchers have found. The findings show that women with a history of pre-eclampsia are more likely to face atherosclerosis — hardening and narrowing of the arteries — decades after pregnancy. Pre-eclampsia is a condition that typically shows itself 20 weeks into the pregnancy, and can occur suddenly or develop slowly. The complication poses a concern to the mother and foetus, affecting

between two and seven per cent of pregnancies. “We’ve found that pre-eclampsia continues to follow mothers long after the birth of their child,” said Vesna Garovic, from Mayo Clinic in the US.

2 new laws to protect Asians, immigrants BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Governor Bruce Rauner signed two Bills on August 28 that will protect and empower the Asian American and immigrant communities in Illinois. The Illinois TRUST Act and Automatic Voter Registration represent a landmark state-level policy that received bi-partisan votes in the General Assembly, and the support of community groups from across the state. The TRUST Act restricts local law enforcement from collaborating with federal immigration enforcement agents to detain anyone without a judicial warrant. This law will provide an unprecedented level of protection for Illinois’ half-million undocumented residents who could otherwise enter the deportation pipeline through any simple interaction with the police, including a traffic violation. “South Asians make up the second highest undocumented immigrant population in Illinois,” said Viveka Ray-Mazumder from Asian Americans Advancing Justice, Chicago. “Now that the TRUST Act has passed, this is a time for us to celebrate Illinois’s commitment to being a welcoming state for our communities. People think of us as threats, but I am living proof that we mean nothing but good for the world,”

said Burhan Chughtai, a youth leader with Advancing Justice. “While I and so many others will no longer have to live with the same level of fear we have been living with for so long, we will continue to fight to ensure rights and protections for all immigrants.” At least 85 community organizations signed on to support the TRUST Act, including the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, National Immigrant Justice Center, PASO (West Suburban Action Project), Hamdard Center, Indo-American Center, Arab American Family Services, Arab American Action Network, and the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago. Governor Rauner also signed Automatic Voter Registration (AVR), which reforms current registration laws so that whenever an

eligible Illinois citizen applies for, updates, or renews a driver’s license or state ID, they will be automatically registered to vote at their new address, unless they choose to opt out. AVR creates a similar program for other state agencies, which will make it the farthest reaching automatic voter registration law in the country. It received a unanimous vote in the General Assembly. “With the Governor’s signing of automatic voter registration, Illinois has solidified its status as a national leader in expanding voting rights and ballot access,” said Andy Kang, Legal Director at Advancing Justice. “Over two years, the Just Democracy Illinois coalition has worked across the aisle to gain support for AVR, a model that can now be duplicated in other states fighting to modernize their voter registration system.”

BY A STAFF WRITER ILMINGTON, DE -- A 25-year old Indian American youth, who has been reported missing under mysterious circumstances in Delaware, has been located by the New Castle County Police Department. Prudhivinath Kanduri, hailing from Andhra Pradesh, went missing on August 21 after he left some indications that he was committing suicide. The incident came to light when his friends informed his parents, Rajeswari Kanduri and Gopalkrishna Kanduri, about the note and his disappearance. Soon after reporting to the New Castle County Police Department, the information about Prudhivinath’s disappearance was also given to John Carney, Governor of Delaware, and the Indian Embassy in Washington. A letter written by Gopalkrishna said that his son was staying at 21 Bridal Path, Wilmington, and was missing for a day after his friends found he had searched for ways to commit suicide on his tablet PC. The police searched his residence on the same evening on the basis of the complaint given by his father. A strong sleep-inducing drug, diphenhydramine, and its multiple empty vials were found from his home indicating that Prudhivinath has been thinking of ending his life. According to the latest Facebook post of the New Castle County Police Department, Prudhvinath has been located and the Gold Alert for him has been cancelled. There has not been any confirmation on the health condition of the youth.

OUSTON, TX -- Despite assurance from federal immigration enforcement authorities, illegal immigrants are afraid to come out in open to take shelter and food in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. Illegal immigrants are the worst affected of all victims of the hurricane that has hit Houston and other parts of Texas. The storm comes amid the new crackdowns by the federal authorities that started only a few days before the natural disaster struck. According to Oscar Hernandez, a community organizer with United We Dream in Houston, several illegal immigrants are shrinking from taking help out of fear of prosecution, a media report said on August 28.. This fear is prevalent in spite of the fact that the immigration authorities have affirmed that victims will not be identified on the basis of their immigration status. The residents are also worried about the shortage of workers in the absence of undocumented workers.

BY A STAFF WRITER T LOUIS, MO – On August 12, Srinivasa Ramanujan Mathematricks Club hosted Medhavadhanam program at Hindu Temple of St. Louis. Medhavadhanam is an art of expression of mathematics in a spectacular way, with kids answering the audience questions (selected topics like cube roots, fifth roots, telling recurring decimal places ...). Kantharao Minnaganti introduced the club to the audience and explained the benefits of Vedic maths. He then introduced Sreenivasa Ainapurapu as a software consultant by profession. Sanghamitra aka Sreenivasa Rao

S

during his talk explained the ancient Vedic computations, how the saints used to compute the times of eclipses, solstices and other astronomical phenomena. He showed how to guide a 3rd or 4th grader through basics of Algebra, Geometry etc. in a playful way with visuals like fruits, toys etc. He also elaborated on Vedic maths, the ancient system of Indian mathematics which was rediscovered from the Vedas.
