Lawmakers introduce bill to fund govt The bill included $1.375 billion for physical barriers along the US-Mexico border, about one-fifth of the amount President Donald Trump asked for IANS, WASHINGTON
U
S lawmakers have introduced a bipartisan spending and security bill to prevent a second government shutdown days before the Friday midnight deadline. Representative Nita Lowey (Democrat, New York), Chairwoman of the House Appropriations Committee, filed the 1,159page bill this week that will keep money in federal coffers until the end of the fiscal year on September 30, the Washington Post reported. The bill included $1.375 billion for physical barriers along the USMexico border, about one-fifth of the amount President Donald Trump asked for. Democrats repeatedly said they won't allocate him that money. The first shutdown, that began on December 22 and ended on January 25, was the longest admin-
IN BRIEFS US charges former Air Force officer with spying for Iran WASHINGTON: The US has charged a former Air Force officer with spying for Iran in an operation that targeted her fellow officers, according to an indictment unsealed in a federal court. Monica Witt, who was also a former counterintelligence officer for the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, defected to Iran in 2013, according to the indictment on Wednesday. She remains at large, CNN reported. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) says that Witt, 39, was last seen in southwest Asia in July 2013.
Manafort lied to prosecutors: Judge WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump's former election campaign chairman Paul Manafort breached his plea deal with special counsel Robert Mueller by "intentionally" lying to prosecutors in the Russia probe, a federal judge has ruled. Manafort "made multiple false statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, special counsel and the grand jury concerning matters that were material to the investigation", including his contacts with his Russian associate during the 2016 presidential campaign and later, Judge Amy Berman Jackson wrote.

istrative closure in US history. "We cannot repeat the disastrous government shutdown, so it is incumbent on Congress to come together to responsibly fund our government. This legislation represents a bipartisan compromise and will keep our government open
while funding key priorities," Lowey said. The bill, if approved by the Senate, which was expected to vote on it on early Thursday, and then if agreed to by the House and, finally, if signed by Trump, would prevent a second shutdown from occurring.
Trump has not said explicitly that he will sign the bill, though Republican lawmakers said they were optimistic he'll back it. "My impression is he's likely to sign it," said Senator John Cornyn. Senator Richard Shelby, Chairman of the Appropriations Committee, said he spoke to Trump recently, characterising the President as being in "good spirits". The funding agreement came even as lawmakers and staffers were still haggling about a handful of outstanding issues, including the type of physical barriers that could be used along the border and some of the locations. A Congressional Democratic aide said the funding bill would only allow the administration to use "existing technologies" for fencing and barriers. The $1.375 billion has been allocated for the construction of approximately 55 miles of a physical barrier along the southern border in
Klobuchar announces 2020 presidential bid IANS, WASHINGTON
D
emocrat Amy Klobuchar has announced her presidential bid at a snowy, outdoor event, vaulting the threeterm Senator from Minnesota into the crowded field of party candidates angling to take on President Donald Trump in 2020. Klobuchar, with snow piling up around her and blanketing the thou-
sands of people before her, on Sunday cast herself as the product of working-class roots who can win bipartisan support and help Democrats win back the Midwestern cities and towns that drifted toward Trump in 2016, CNN reported. Throughout her speech in Minneapolis, she pledged to take on issues like money in politics, climate change and election reform and leaned heavily into her Min-

Homeland Security will receive $49.4 billion in discretionary funding, $2 billion more than Trump asked for and, along with the 55mile barrier, included $100 million for "new border security technology", $113 million for "additional air and marine assets" and $77 million for "opioid equipment and staffing for use at international mail and express consignment facilities", the summary said. There will be no funding for new border patrol agents, however. Representative Lowey also said that under the bill, the Department of Homeland Security was also directed to ensure that migrant families were "reunited and transferred together" before they were removed from US Customs and Border Patrol or transferred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. when we must heal the heart of our democracy and renew our commitment to the common good, I stand before you as the granddaughter of an iron ore miner, the daughter of a teacher and a newspaperman, the first woman elected to the US Senate from the state of Minnesota, to announce my candidacy for President of the Us,” Klobuchar said. “I’m asking you to join us on this campaign. It’s a homegrown one.” “I don’t have a political machine. I don’t come from money. D
emocratic Senator Elizabeth Warren, who has officially launched her 2020 presidential campaign, said that US President Donald Trump might be unable to finish his term by the time Election Day comes next year. “By the time we get to 2020, Donald Trump may not be President... In fact, he may not even be a free person,” Warren told an audience at a campaign event on Sunday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Warren elaborated the remarks to the media later at another event in Iowa City, pointing to the ongoing investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 election by Spe-

investigations are there now? It’s no longer just the Mueller investigation,” Warren said.
“They’re everywhere and these are serious investigations, so we’ll see what happens.” Asked whether she believes Trump should be impeached, the Senator said it was important to first see Mueller’s findings. Warren formally kicked off her bid for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination before a crowd of about 3,500 supporters in Massachusetts last week. She is part of a rapidly expanding Democratic White House field that includes Senators Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, Kirsten Gillibrand and Amy Klobuchar, who announced her bid on Sunday. Also expected to join the race is Vermont Senator and former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.

42 CRPF troopers killed in suicide attack in Kashmir SRINAGAR: In the worst ever terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir since militancy erupted in 1989, a suicide bomber on Thursday rammed his SUV packed with explosives into a CRPF bus on the Srinagar-Jammu highway in Pulwama district, killing at least 42 troopers and leaving the security established stunned.
The Pakistan-based Jaish-eMohammad (JeM) claimed responsibility for the horror and released a video clip of the suicide bomber, a ‘commander’ identified as Adil Ahmad Dar, which it claimed was shot before the young man carried out the strike in Lethpora, about 30 km from here. While precise details of the attack

were still unclear, police sources said the suicide bomber-driven SUV came along the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) bus when a 78-vehicle convoy carrying 2,547 security personnel was going from the transit camp in Jammu to Srinagar and rammed it into the bus around 3.15 p.m., triggering a deafening explosion. So devastating was the attack — one report spoke of 200 kg of explosives, including probably RDX, packed into the SUV — that the CRPF bus was left in a mangled heap, many of its occupants losing their limbs. The bus was transporting 39 troopers. —IANS

The report, which said NDA’s deal was 2.86 per cent cheaper, examined the pricing but did not disclose the actual price of the 36 fighter jets IANS, NEW DELHI
I
n a relief to the government ahead of Lok Sabha polls, the much-awaited Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has found that the deal signed by the NDA regime in 2016 for 36 fighter jets was 2.86 per cent lower than the price negotiated by the UPA for 126 aircraft but felt that the present capital acquisition system is unlikely to effectively support the IAF. Without going into the controversial offset clause of the Medium Multi Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) deal, the report examined the pricing but did not disclose the actual price of the 36 Rafale fighter jets contracted by the NDA government. The prices have been redacted in the audit report based on the insistence of the Defense Ministry citing the Indo-French agreement of 2008 and the provisions of Inter-Government Agreement (IGA).

The Rafale deal is believed to be of the order of Rs 59,000 crore. Against the backdrop of the Congress and other opposition parties attacking the government accusing it of corruption in the Rafale deal, the relief from the CAG comes on top of the Supreme Court clean cheat given last year. “Overall, it may be seen that as
against the Aligned Price as estimated by Audit of ‘CV’ million Euro, the contract was concluded for ‘U’ million Euro i.e. 2.86 per cent lower than the Audit Aligned Price,” the CAG said in its report on “Capital Acquisition on Indian Air Force” tabled in Parliament on Wednesday. The report contained audit findings relating to the acquisition of
MMCRA through an IGA with the government of France. “This includes examination of the pricing.” Going into the methodology of the price comparison, the national auditor said the price offered by M/S Dassault Aviation in April 2008 against the Request For Proposal (RFP) of 2007 was a market discovered price and based on competitive bidding. The price offer of 2007 had two distinct packages: pricing for 18 flyaway aircraft package and pricing for Transfer of Technology (ToT) package for 108 aircraft which were to be licensed produced in India. In a comparative analysis of 2007 and 2015 price bids, the CAG said: “The Aligned Price worked out by INT was ‘U1’ million Euro while the Aligned Price as assessed by the audit was ‘CV’ million Euro which was about 1.23 per cent lower than the INT aligned cost.”

Delhi hotel fire leaves 17 dead, Bikaner land deals: Robert Vadra questioned case filed against hotel owner IANS, JAIPUR
NEW DELHI: At least 17 people were killed when a major fire engulfed a five-storey hotel in the heart of the Indian capital before dawn on Tuesday, leaving some survivors in critical condition and others dazed and shaken. The dead included at least two women from Myanmar and a child who could not escape the leaping flames and the thick smoke in Hotel Arpit Palace in the commercial-cumresidential district of Karol Bagh, officials said. Two employees of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd, an IRS official, and three members of a family from Kerala’s Kochi were also killed in the second worst fire incident in the capital since the 1997

he Enforcement Directorate (ED), which is investigating a web of controversial land transactions in Bikaner allegedly involving Robert Vadra’s companies, on Tuesday questioned him for over eight hours about his relations with some land dealers. Robert Vadra and his mother, Maureen, who was also questioned on Tuesday, have been asked to appear again before the agency on Wednesday morning, according to an agency source. Robert and Maureen Vadra on Tuesday morning appeared before the ED officials in Jaipur around 10.40 a.m. and left the agency’s office at 8.30 p.m. They were questioned under the provisions of Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
Robert Vadra
Robert and Maureen, were accompanied to the ED office here by his wife Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who rushed from Lucknow to be with the family. Later in the day, she returned to Lucknow where she did a road show on Monday. The ED source said that Vadra was given a set of questions about
how he knew Mahesh Nagar, an authorized representative of Skylight Hospitality LLP, owned by Robert Vadra and his 75-year-old mother. Nagar is the person who links Vadra’s company with Ashok Kumar, who was named in the chargesheet filed by the Rajasthan Police in the case. In December 2017, the ED had arrested Ashok Kumar, a close associate of Nagar, and another person, Jaiprakash Bagarwa. The ED had searched the premises of both Kumar and Nagar in April 2017. According to ED officials, Nagar was the authorized representative in four cases of land purchase in Bikaner. Kumar, the agency alleged, had purchased land in the same area, using the “power of attorney” of others.

‘Modi rattled by opposition alliance’ The son of late PM Chandra Shekhar says Narendra Modi was shaken by the alliance of opposition parties BRAJENDRA NATH SINGH, NEW DELHI
T
he entry of Priyanka Gandhi into active politics will not impact the SP-BSP alliance in Uttar Pradesh, where the BJP has been rattled because of the coming together of the two parties, says Neeraj Shekhar, a Samajwadi Party MP. The son of late Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar says Prime Minister Narendra Modi was shaken by the alliance of opposition parties. This is why he was coining words like “mahamilawat” to target them. “In the nation’s interest, our aim is to remove Modi and the voter and the workers know it very well. They also know what kind of situation may emerge if Modi wins again,” Shekhar told IANS in an interview. He was asked whether keeping the Congress out of the SP-BSP alliance may cost the two parties after Priyanka Gandhi’s entered active politics as Congress General Secretary in-charge of eastern Uttar Pradesh. The Rajya Sabha member and a close confidante of former Uttar
Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav expressed confidence that the SP-BSP alliance would confine the saffron party to a single digit. This, he said, would turn the 2019 Lok Sabha polls in favor of the opposition alliance as there was immense anger among the farmers and youth across the country against the Modi government which had failed to fulfil the promises made to them. “The PM is so rattled due to alliance of the opposition parties
RS member Akhilesh Yadav expressed confidence that the SP-BSP alliance would confine the saffron party to a single digit that he is using the words like ‘milawat’ and ‘mahamilawat’ against them. This shows his desperation. He has also sensed that countdown of his departure has begun,” he said. “They (BJP) have done alliances with over 40 political parties. They allied with Peoples Democratic Party in Jammu and Kashmir, a
party opposed to the BJP’s ideology. But when we are forging alliance, it pains them,” he added. He called as “farce” BJP President Amit Shah’s claim that his party and its allies would not get less that 73 of the 80 seats they won in 2014. In reality, in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Uttar Pradesh will decide Modi’s fate, Shekhar said. “Shah may be claiming he can win over 73 seats, but no one will believe it. They will be confined to single digit and their dream to retain power again will remain a dream,” he said. Shekhar, a former Lok Sabha member from Ballia, he said if BJP thought that it can cover up the losses in Uttar Pradesh by winning more seats from West Bengal and Odisha, then “they are underestimating Didi (West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee) and Naveen Babu (Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik)”. He also said that the BJP will not able to repeat its 2014 performance in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar and Jharkhand besides Uttar Pradesh.

F
or five days every January the Pink City of Jaipur becomes the centre of attraction as literary stalwarts from India and abroad assemble in huge numbers — spanning languages, genres and themes — to participate in the Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF). This has been happening for over a decade. The City of Joy, however, built a literary edifice of sorts this year as several prominent literary events were held in Kolkata coinciding with the JLF. The success of JLF, its expansion in major cities abroad, coupled with a touch of glamour while retaining the aesthetics of Indian heritage and languages, have fast propelled it into becoming the largest literary gathering of its kind. Held from January 24-28 this year, the "greatest literary show on earth" was preceded by Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival (AKLF), which celebrated its 10th edition in grandeur. "It is clear that during the Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival, Kolkata becomes a literary magnet. AKLF is the only literary fes-
tival in the country created by a bookstore, the nearly 100-yearold iconic Oxford Bookstore. "The people of the city are interested in books and reading a variety of genres ranging from classics to Pulitzer Prize winning titles and this was very evident from the audience and their interaction with authors at the festival," Priti Paul, Director of Apeejay Surrendra group, which organizes the festival, had told this correspondent on the sidelines of the festival. And then, barely two days before JLF kicked off, Nobel Laureate Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, who also delivered the keynote address at Jaipur, inaugurated the Tata Steel Kolkata Literary Meet. Among the prominent names who attended this year's event were Man Booker Prize winner Yann Martel, beloved writer Ruskin Bond, historian Ramachandra Guha and singer Rekha Bharadwaj. The high-point of the festival was a glittering award ceremony at the Victoria Memorial Hall where the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature was awarded to Jayant Kaikini and Tejaswini Niranjana along with a unique trophy by Bond.

US NSA warns India against buying Venezuelan oil
The US does not consider that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’ government has the right to sell the country’s oil — and hence, calls the oil exports theft
Aid enters Venezuela from Feb 23: Juan Guaido CARACAS: National Assembly Speaker Juan Guaido, who proclaimed himself Venezuela’s interim president on January 23, has announced that humanitarian aid being stockpiled abroad will begin entering the country on February 23. “We’re announcing that February 23 will be the day for the entry of the humanitarian aid, and so from today we will work with all sectors — transportation workers, nurses who must
introduce and distribute the aid,” said Guaido on Tuesday at the close of a rally here. The US is organizing the aid effort that Nicolas Maduro, the elected head of state, has denounces as a prelude to military intervention by Washington. to sell the country’s oil — and hence, calls the oil exports “theft”. Reacting to Bolton at a news conference here, Foreign Minister Arreaza, who represents Maduro, said: “What he (Bolton) is trying to do here is give orders. This is a dictatorship that they are trying to impose on the world. Unilateralism at its maximum expression.” He asserted that because of Bolton’s attitude “there was a rebellion against this, this dictatorship” at a meeting of the representatives of the Non-aligned Movement earlier Tuesday at the UN. Facing an embargo on its oil exports by the US and most west-
ern countries, Venezuela is trying to increase sales to India and other countries. Visiting India, Venezuelan Oil Minister Manuel Quevedo told reporters there on Monday that his country wanted to double the current oil exports of 340,000 barrels per day to India. Venezuela is the third largest supplier of oil to India. Reliance Industries and Nayara Energy are its biggest customers. Quevedo, who also heads the state oil company Petroleos de Venezuela, met India’s Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Monday.
BEIJING: US and Chinese officials on Thursday began a twoday meet here to sort out their trade differences as the March 1 deadline for the truce in their festering trade war draws near. If the two sides fail to patch up before March 1, Washington will raise the existing 10 per cent tariffs to 25 per cent on Chinese goods worth $200 billion, taking the spat to the next level. So the Chinese and the US officials are racing against time to avert such a scenario, which, experts worry, will also have an impact on the global economic growth. US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin met China’s Vice Premier and its point man on trade Liu He, Xinhua news agency reported. —IANS
May doesn’t want extension of EU negotiations: UK Brexit chief IANS, LONDON
U
K’s Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay on Wednesday downplayed the possibility of Prime Minister Theresa May seeking an extension to the negotiation period with the bloc in order to avoid a nodeal Brexit. Barclay responded to questions on the BBC’s flagship morning politics radio show after UK’s chief Brexit negotiator Olly Robbins was apparently overheard in a Brussels bar saying that May would ask lawmakers to vote on whether they wanted to extend the negotiation period. Declining to comment on the details of the recording, published by ITV News, Barclay said it was still May’s policy to leave the bloc on March 29, two years after the Conservative Party leader triggered Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, which officially notified the EU of the UK’s intention to leave and launched the negotiation period. “It’s not in anyone’s interest to have an extension without any clarity,” Barclay said. In the recording, civil servant Robbins appeared to say the PM would in March give
British Prime Minister Theresa May (Xinhua/Tim Ireland)
Members of Parliament in the House of Commons, the lower chamber of UK lawmaking, a choice to either back her withdrawal deal, which has struggled to make it through the Commons, or to extend Article 50, according to Efe news. May’s withdrawal deal, the result of over 18
months of negotiations with the EU, became lodged in the Commons after lawmakers rejected it by a historical margin last month then later passed an amendment to find legally-binding changes to the Irish backstop insurance policy on the open border in Ireland. The backstop, one of the key pillars of the
document, was rejected by right-wing Tories and the Democratic Unionist Party, a Northern Irish group propping up May’s government, who said its constituents were opposed to any possibility that the UK territory could be subject to EU regulations while the rest of the UK was not. The clause is a safety net policy to ensure there is no hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland if future talks with Brussels suddenly collapse. In a Commons address on Tuesday, May was adamant that she can convince the EU to tweak the backstop, either by finding a socalled alternative arrangement, which the UK government was yet to specify, or by adding a fixed expiry date, or by granting the UK powers to unilaterally withdraw from it. Opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn accused the Tory leader of running down the clock on Brexit in a bid to get MPs to back her deal. The EU has repeatedly warned that the withdrawal agreement would not be opened for further renegotiations — the bloc’s institutions and remaining members states have already signed off on it.

Rao would replace Brett Kavanaugh on the nation’s secondmost powerful court as the latter was elevated to the Supreme Court. But she came under fire during her confirmation hearing last week over opeds she wrote as an undergraduate at Yale University. In an article on date rape, Rao wrote that if a woman “drinks to the point where she can no longer choose, well, getting to that point was part of her choice”. In a letter this week to the Senate Judiciary Committee, Rao condemned “sexual assault in all forms” as “abhorrent” and said that she “particularly regret(s) the insensitivity demonstrated in my remarks on

Kamala confronts critics on her black heritage NEW YORK: US Senator Kamala Harris, who is of Indian and Jamaican descent, has directly confronted critics who questioned her black heritage, her record of incarcerating minorities as a prosecutor and her decision to marry a white man. In an interview this week with New York-based The Breakfast Club radio, the show’s hosts asked the California Democrat to address a series of derogatory memes that have circulated on social media, CNN reported. One of the hosts cited a meme that said Harris is “not AfricanAmerican” because her parents were immigrants born in India and Jamaica and she spent her high school years in Canada. “So I was born in Oakland, and raised in the US except for the years that I was in high school in Montreal, Canada,” Harris responded. “And look, this is the same thing they did to Barack (Obama). One of the hosts followed up by asking Harris how she responds to people who question “the legitimacy of your blackness”. “I think they don’t understand who black people are,” Harris replied. “I’m not going to spend my time trying to educate people about who black people are... debates on campus, I failed to recognize the hurt that my words would cause a survivor of such crimes. “No woman or man should be subject to sexual violence, regardless of the clothes they wear or how much alcohol they consumed. Nonconsensual sexual activity is never appropriate or excusable,” Rao wrote to the committee. “Victims should not be blamed for the terrible things that have happened to them... We should create an environment where survivors feel empowered and comfortable coming forward.” Senator Joni Ernst, a new Republican member of the Judiciary Committee, who recently disclosed that she had been raped in college, earlier told Rao that her writings “do give me pause” and that she was concerned about the message Rao’s columns send to young women. At the time, Ernst said she was undecided on whether to support Rao’s confirmation, according to the Post.
Man gets 7-year jail for killing Indian in Dubai DUBAI: A 37-year-old Pakistani citizen has been sentenced to seven years in prison, to would be followed by his deportation for stabbing his Indian roommate to death in October 2018 over an argument on leaving the lights on. The defendant was staying with the victim and others in a room at a workers’ accommodation in Jebel Ali, on the southern outskirts of Dubai. On that day, the accused disturbed his sleeping Indian roommate and others by switching on lights and speaking loudly on phone, the Khaleej Times reported. The unidentified victim and other roommates asked the defendant to switch off the lights. It led to a verbal brawl. The victim attacked the Pakistani man, who then stabbed the former with a 20cm knife, according to the report. The defendant admitted that he had consumed alcohol before the incident but did not intend to kill the victim. The Dubai Court of First Instance last week convicted the accused and ordered his deportation after the end of jail-term. A 46-year-old Indian supervisor testified that the defendant was a visitor and staying in the room for two days. The defendant can appeal conviction within 15 days. —IANS

Goyal said the Bill would offer great protection to Indian citizens married to NRIs, and serve as a deterrent to NRIs against harassment of their spouses and benefit Indian women married to NRIs worldwide.

crowd thrashed Arni BJP MLA Raju Narayan Todsam and his ‘second wife’ on the road this week, leading to calls that he should not be allowed to share the stage with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Maharashtra. The incident happened when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator was returning after inaugurating a sports tournament along with his ‘second wife’ Priya Shinde-Todsam. Todsam’s wife Priya Shinde and party supporters were celebrating his 42nd birthday when the legislator’s first wife, Archana Todsam, and his mother rushed near their vehicle along with some supporters and accosted the ‘second wife’. After a brief verbal slanging match, Archana and her mother-

T BENGALURU: Karnataka Assembly Speaker K.R. Ramesh Kumar adjourned the House this week amid protests by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators against the attack on its MLA’s residence in Hassan. The BJP legislators walked towards the Speaker’s podium and raised slogans against the attack on Preetham Gowda’s residence by Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) workers in Hassan. JD-S workers had attacked Gowda’s house by pelting stones on Wednesday after he allegedly bad-mouthed its supremo H.D. Deve Gowda, who represents the district in Lok Sabha. Hassan is Gowda clan’s home constituency. BJP’s state unit president B.S. Yeddyurappa urged the Speaker for a thorough probe into the incident. “We have submitted a letter to Governor Vajubhai Vala on the stone pelting issue. Shortly after the incident, police rushed there and managed to whisk away Todsam and Priya Shinde to safety after a mild caning of the enraged crowds. They admitted Priya, who suffered injuries on the face, to a hospital. Confirming the public fracas, a Pandharkawada Police Station official, D.S. Tembhare, told IANS that both the women (Priya and Archana and her mother-in-law) later came to the police station and they mutually agreed to settle their row. So no formal complaint had been lodged.

Taking a grim view of the development, farmers’ leader and Vasantra Naik Sheti Swavalamban Samiti Chairman Kishore Tiwari said this was “a shameless behaviour on the part of the legislator to come out in public with his ‘second wife’ violating decency norms. “He must give justice to the first wife with whom he was married for eight years and their two minor children whom he has deserted for another woman. If he fails to comply within 48 hours, we shall appeal to the PM (Prime Minister) to resolve the issue on his Pandharkawada visit last week,” Tiwari told the media. Meanwhile, Bedi left for Chennai on Thursday morning to par-

He was protesting against Bedi for not permitting implementation of his government’s welfare schemes. He was joined by his ministerial colleagues and DMK lawmakers. Narayansamy also accused Bedi of interfering in the day-to-day activities of the government. His protest came after Bedi hit the road two days ago and advised
two-wheeler owners to wear helmets. While Bedi wanted the helmet rule for two-wheeler riders to be implemented at one go, Narayanasamy wanted the implementation in phases. On her part, Bedi wrote to Narayanasamy inviting him for a meeting on February 21.

haratiya Janata Party (BJP) national President Amit Shah’s “real” mission during his Goa visit last week was to take away files related to the Rafale deal from Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s bedroom, Goa Congress spokesperson Jitendra Deshprabhu has alleged. He also claimed that some of the documents related to the Rafale deal, which were leaked to the media over the last few days, could have been part of Rafale files which were stashed at Parrikar’s private residence. “The Congress alleges that (Shah’s) Goa visit was to collect the

files at Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s home... The files were taken away. Once the files are taken away, they (Shah and the BJP) can be at peace and they can then sack
Manohar Parrikar, who can no longer blackmail the top leadership now,” Deshprabhu alleged at a press conference organized at the opposition party’s state headquarters. He
said a leaked audio tape, purportedly containing a journalist’s conversation with Health Minister Vishwajit Rane, had already confirmed that the former Defense Minister did keep files related to the Rafale deal in his bedroom. The controversial tape, in which Rane is heard telling a yet-unnamed journalist that Parrikar during a recent cabinet meeting had said that Rafale files were stashed in his bedroom, had created a stir in Parliament in January. Deshprabhu now alleges that Shah visited the state to collect the same clutch of files and had an unscheduled 45 minutes with Parrikar at the latter’s private residence, before eventually addressing a party booth workers’ meeting near Panaji.

FFI demands ‘special court’ to curb piracy IANS, NEW DELHI
M
embers of the Film Federation of India (FFI) here this week urged the government to pay attention to issues ailing the film industry and sought creation of “special courts” for the industry. “we want the government to tackle the problem of piracy by creating special courts where our pleas can be considered seriously,” FII SecretaryGeneral Supran Sen said. Many a times when we approached police with complaints about issues like piracy, they ignored us, he said and added a special court would certainly help resolve the issue. Hailing the government decision of reduce the goods and services tax (GST) on cinema tickets, the FFI said issues like piracy and

restoration of single screens should also be looked into. “The government decision of including an anti-camcording provision in the Cinematography Act to control piracy will need serious implementation,” FFI’s Vice-President Ramesh Tekwani told IANS.
Announcement is fine but people should be stopped from recording films by asking them to deposit their phones before entering theatres, he said. “One single phone can shoot the entire film. People also know different ways to record the film,” Tekwani said.
FFI members Sakshi Mehra and G.D. Mehta said “restricted access due to lack of shows and unrestricted ticket prices” were increasing the piracy of films in India. According to FFI President Firdausul Hasan, piracy of Indian films has crossed borders. “In Bangladesh, people watch our films, but they are not getting released there. This is piracy. Being a part of the FFI, we can just raise our voice, it’s the government who has to do the real job,” he said. “To maintain better relations, we are creating an Indo-Bangla federation. Without the the government’s help, we won’t be able to do it. The government’s co-operation is very important,” Hasan said. The FFI asked the government to stop “looking at the Indian film industry as sin industry”.

year after the Grammy Awards were criticized for its track record in gender representation, women took centrestage at the 61st edition of the annual gala last week. There were bold performances and wins in many top categories, including the album of the year that was given to Kacey Musgraves for Golden Hour. The controversies of last year, when just one woman won a solo award during the telecast — and the outgoing head of the Recording Academy, the organization behind the awards, remarked that women in music should “step up” to advance their careers — were never far from the surface of the show. Dua Lipa, a 23-year-old British singer, alluded to that when accepting the award for best new artist, saying she was honored to be
recognized among so many other female artists, reports nytimes.com. “I guess this year we really stepped up,” Lipa said. Backstage, she said the message of greater gender equity was immediately clear to her when the nominations were announced last December. Musgraves took home three other prizes, apart from album of the year, in the country field. The ceremony saw Falguni Shah and Prashant Mistry of Indian origin losing in two separate categories, while Grammy and Oscarwinning Indian musician A.R. Rahman enjoyed the show as an audience member. It was also the night of hip-hop artists. Both the record and song of the year prizes — the latter awarded for songwriting — were won by Childish Gambino’s “This Is America”, a song about racial injustice. It was the first hip-hop song to

Diversity was celebrated as Guyanese-born British actress Letitia Wright won the EE Rising Star Award — an honor that the public votes for. BlacKkKlansman won for Adapted Screenplay, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse took the award for Animated Film, the Best Documentary went to Free Solo, Vice won for Editing, and Black Panther received the BAFTA for Special Visual Effects.
Nicki Minaj calls out producer over bullying LOS ANGELES: Rapper Nicki Minaj has slammed Grammy Awards producer Ken Ehrlich for allegedly bullying her. After the 2019 Grammy Awards ceremony, Minaj took to Twitter and called out Ehrlich saying she was bullied for seven years, reports foxnews.com. Earlier, rapper Ariana Grande had criticized Ehrlich for “lying” about her reasons for pulling out of a performance at this year’s Grammys. Minaj tweeted: “I pissed off the same man Ariana just called out for lying. Grammy producer Ken. I was bullied into staying quiet for seven years out of fear.”

He, along with Kendrick Lamar and Drake, the two influential young rappers in music, were offered performance spots on the show but they turned them down, reflecting the alienation from the Grammys that has taken hold among much of the upper ranks of hip-hop.

‘Tough to eradicate TB by 2025’ India currently has the world’s highest burden of Tuberculosis (TB), a report said

W
hile the government’s goal of ending tuberculosis (TB) by 2025 in India is worthy of applause, it is “tough” and “very stretching”, given where the country stands currently, says a top executive at the Switzerland-based non-profit The Global Fund. India currently has the world’s highest burden of TB, with 27 percent of all global cases and over 30 percent of all deaths worldwide. In March 2017, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced India’s target for complete elimination of TB by 2025, five years ahead of global target of 2030. Low-fibre, high-fat diet may up severe sepsis risk
NEW YORK: Consuming a Western diet, low in fibre and high in fat and sugar, can put you at increased risk of developing severe sepsis, researchers say. The study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found mice that were fed the Western diet showed an increase in chronic inflammation, sepsis severity and higher mortality rates than mice that were fed a normal diet. Sepsis is a potentially life-threatening condition caused by the body’s response to an infection. It can lead to shock and organ failure. It is one of the most common cause of death worldwide. According to the researchers, including Brooke Napier from the Portland State University, the mice had more severe sepsis and were dying faster because of something in their diet, not because of the weight gain or microbiome, the body’s community of bacteria. “The mice’s immune system on
the Western diet looked and functioned differently. It looks like the diet is manipulating immune cell function so that you are more susceptible to sepsis, and then when you get sepsis, you die quicker,” Napier said. The researcher said the findings can help hospitals better monitor the diets of patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) since they are already the ones most likely to develop sepsis. “If you know that a diet high in fat and sugar correlates with increased susceptibility to sepsis and increased mortality when those patients are in the ICU, you can make sure they’re eating the right fats and the right ratio of fats,” she said. “If you could introduce a dietary intervention while they are in the ICU to decrease their chances of manipulating their immune system in that way, you can somehow influence the outcome,” she added. —IANS
non-profit has disbursed $2.1 billion in various programmes to fight HIV, TB and malaria and strengthen health systems in India. For the 2017-2019-allocation period, the organization has allocated $500 million - the largest proportion of it is focused on TB. “One of the biggest challenges in the fight against TB are the 3.6 million “missing” people with active TB - people who are undiagnosed, unreported and untreated each year, contributing to ongoing transmission. “Without treatment, a person with active TB can spread the disease to as many as 15 others,” Sands informed. But the new indicators are encouraging, he said. TB notification in India has increased from 1.7 million in 2015 to 2.15 million in 2018.
New software for heart diseases R IANS, DUBAI
esearchers have developed a new software that could spot potentially lethal heart diseases and may lead to improvements in prevention and treatment, says a new study. The software — ElectroMap — which measures electrical activity in the organ, is a new open-source software for processing, analysis and mapping complex cardiac data. The study, published in the journal Scientific Reports, showed that the heart’s pumping ability is controlled by electrical activity that triggers the heart muscle cells to contract and relax. In certain heart diseases such as arrhythmia, the organ’s electrical activity is affected. Arrhythmia is improper beating

of the heart too fast or too slow. “We believe that ElectroMap will accelerate innovative cardiac research and lead to wider use of mapping technologies that help prevent the incidence of arrhythmia,” said Kashif Rajpoot, Senior Lecturer at the University
of Birmingham Dubai. The incidence and prevalence of cardiac disease continues to increase every year. However, improvements in prevention and treatment require better understanding of electrical behavior across the heart, the study noted.
This new mechanism may prevent Alzheimer’s IANS, NEW YORK
R
esearchers have identified a novel mechanism and a potential new therapeutic target for Alzheimer’s disease (AD), says a new study on mice. Alzheimer’s is characterized by profound memory loss and synaptic failure. Although the exact cause of the disease remains unclear, it is well established that maintaining memory and synaptic plasticity requires protein synthesis. The function of the synapse is to transfer electric activity (information) from one cell to another. “Alzheimer’s is such a devastating disease and currently there is no cure or effective therapy for it,” said Tao Ma, Assistant Professor at Wake
Forest School of Medicine in the US. “All completed clinical trials of new drugs have failed, so there is clearly a need for novel therapeutic targets for potential treatments.” For the study, the team has shown that AD-associated activation of a signaling molecule termed eEF2K leads to inhibition of protein synthesis. Further, they wanted to determine if suppression of eEF2K could improve protein synthesis capacity, consequently alleviating the cogni-
tive and synaptic impairments associated with the disease. They used a genetic approach to repress the activity of eEF2K in Alzheimer’s mouse models. The findings, published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, showed that genetic suppression of eEF2K prevented memory loss in those animal models and significantly improved synaptic function. “These findings are encouraging and provide a new pathway for further research,” according to the researcher.

he Parliamentary Committee on Information Technology (IT) this week yet again summoned Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey to appear before it on February 25 over allegations of the social media site discriminating against “nationalist” posts on its platform. The parliamentary panel headed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Lok Sabha Member of Parliament Anurag Thakur had summoned the Dorsey to appear before it this
week, but the Twitter sent a team of its officials led by its India and South Asia Policy Director Mahima Kaul. The panel refused to hear the officials and they were kept waiting outside the meeting room. “All the members took such disregard for the Committee by Twitter very seriously. What was the point in hearing those officials who have no authority?” an informed source told IANS. “We want to give them (Twitter) another chance. The CEO will be summoned to appear
before the panel on February 25,” he added. The panel also discussed widening the scope of its enquiry and may also summon the top brass of other social media and messaging sites including Facebook, WhatsApp and others, sources said. The panel is mulling to hold a meeting on February 26 too in which it may call other social media players. Later, Twitter said that it is “working hard” to expand its team and resources to help tackle the spread of misinformation on its platform.

The world is getting literally greener than it was 20 years ago, the study published in the latest edition in Nature Sustainability said. It showed that at least 25 percent of the global foliage expansion since the early 2000s came from China, with India close behind. BY A STAFF WRITER LAWRENCEVILLE, GA. — Police are looking for a prominent Indian American Atlanta-area businessman accused of exploiting Super Bowl fans out of tens of thousands of dollars as part of a ticket scam. Gwinnett County police are searching for Ketan Shah, and that his mother is among those who’ve filed police reports on him. His wife, Bavhi Shah, says he hasn’t been seen since Jan. 3. She reported him missing earlier this month. Ketan Shah’s mother told police she lost $36,000 in the scam. John Brunetti tells he lost $50,000. Both thought they were buying tickets from Shah to game on Feb. 3 in Atlanta. Reports also say an alleged victim who lost the most was a businessman and friend of Shah’s who paid $500,000 for tickets and chance to host a Super Bowl party. “It’s not that he posted some ad and random people are contacting this guy for tickets and being scammed,” Gwinnett County police spokesman Cpl. Wilbert Rundles told. “He’s known these people for many years. One of them, he’s known his whole life because it’s his own mother, and he’s taken advantage of them.”

BY A STAFF WRITER EDISON, NJ — A 30-year-old Indian American man has died here after getting run over by a trailer truck when he allegedly tried to crawl under the vehicle trying to take a short cut. Neal Patel, a resident of Princeton, New Jersey, succumbed to his injuries at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick on Saturday. The incident happened last Tuesday, a community newspaper reported. According to the police, Patel and his friend were leaving Wick Plaza in New Jersey and headed to local motel Global Inn, across Route 1, when Patel apparently tried to scoot under a parked trailer truck in order to take a shortcut, while his friend walked around the big vehicle, New India Times said. The trailer driver, unaware of a man crawling under his vehicle, suddenly started his vehicle and drove away. Patel was dragged for 10 feet and run over by the tyres of the big vehicle. His friend was uninjured. The driver does not face any charges in connection with the accident, according to the report.

Community Members in San Jose Mourn Tragic Killing of Sikh BY A STAFF WRITER SAN JOSE, CA- Indian American community members in the San Francisco Bay Area have rallied together to mourn the tragic loss of Robinder Singh Bhurji, who was killed by a hit-and-run driver in San Jose, Calif., Jan. 28. Bhurji was born and raised in Northern India, married his teenage sweetheart, Haru, and immigrated to the U.S. where he was working for a tech firm. Friends say “Robin” was an artist, entrepreneur and volunteer San Jose firefighter. The 57-year-old was killed Jan. 28 in the morning by a hit-and-run driver as he walked on Almaden Expressway near Cloverhill Drive, not far from his house, according to reports. San Jose police sergeant Enrique Garcia said that after Bhurji was struck, four other cars ran over the pedestrian. Garcia, who said Jan. 29 that police have ruled out one suspect, said the investigation is ongoing. Bhurji had two grown sons, and taught for 25 years at the San Jose Gurdwara Temple in Evergreen. He was an everpresent volunteer. He also worked as a facilities manager for a

medical device company, but still found time to be a volunteer firefighter, it said. A GoFundMe page raised $13,507 towards a goal of $20,000 for the family in 6 days. Anyone with information about the collision can contact Detective Troy Sirmons at 408-
277-4654. Those wishing to remain anonymous can leave a tip with Silicon Valley Crime Stoppers at 408-947-STOP (7867) or svcrimestoppers. org. Tipsters may be eligible for a cash reward.
Kidnaping Case Dismissed against Indian Amercian Trucking Company Owner BY A STAFF WRITER CERES, CA — A judge has dismissed the case against an Indian American man accused by a 14-year-old California girl of trying to kidnap her after his defense attorney found surveillance video contradicting the teen’s statement to police. Stanislaus Superior Court Judge Ricardo Cordova Feb. 6 dismissed the criminal case against Sandeep Singh after determining that the Ceres man was “factually innocent.’’ The request to dismiss the case came at the request of prosecutors. Singh, a farmer and owner of a trucking company, according to CBS13, spent more than seven months fighting felony kidnapping

allegations after the teenager told police a man of Indian descent driving a pickup grabbed her last June her as she walked on a street but that she got away. The girl identified Singh when police took her to where he was and he was arrested,

according to Singh’s attorney, Kirk McAllister. “I’m just happy that the truth came out,’’ Singh said after the hearing. “Basically, I think I got my life back.’’ As part of the defense investigation, McAllister found and subpoenaed security camera video from a nearby church that shows Singh’s pickup truck driving past the young woman and never stopping. “It totally exonerated him,” he said. Deputy District Attorney Erin Schwartz told the judge that after the video surfaced that investigators interviewed the girl, who confirmed the attempted kidnapping didn’t happen and “she lied about what Mr. Singh did.

Indian National in US Pleads Guilty to Role in Dangerous Human Trafficking Conspiracy
BY A STAFF WRITER WASHINGTON, DC- Yadvinder Singh Bhamba pleaded guilty last month to one count of conspiracy and 15 counts of smuggling aliens to the United States for profit before US Magistrate Judge Sivia Carreno-Coll of the District of Puerto Rico. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for April. According to admissions in Bhamba’s plea agreement, since 2013, Bhamba had a leadership role in a human smuggling conspiracy operating out of the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Puerto Rico, India and elsewhere. As part of the conspiracy, Bhamba personally assisted around 400 people to unlawfully enter the United States between 2013 and 2015. He also oversaw and directed co-conspirators operating out of the Caribbean, Assistant Attorney General Brian Benczkowski of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division said. Individuals paid between US $30,000 and US $85,000 to be smuggled from India to the United States and from at least 2013 to 2016, human smuggling was Bhamba’s primary source of income, the Department said. Bhamba was arrested in the Dominican Republic in August 2017, and later transferred to Puerto Rico. Bhamba and other members of the conspiracy made flight arrangements for people to travel from India through other countries including Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, Argentina, Iran, Panama, Venezuela, Belize, and Haiti to the Dominican Republic, which was used as a staging area, where aliens were housed before being transported to the United States. The organisation brought groups of aliens from the Dominican Republic to Puerto Rico or Florida by boat and from there they were picked up by co-conspirators and taken to stash houses until flights could be arranged to California, New York, or elsewhere in the United States. Bhamba and others arranged for fraudulent identifications for some aliens to use in the United States. The Justice Department said that the boat trips organised by Bhamba and his co-conspirators were perilous. Boat captains used old, damaged, cracked, unlicensed, overcrowded, and unsafe boats to make the journey. In at least one instance, a person died in a boat on his way to the United States. At times, the smugglers would take passports from the aliens during their journeys, physically assault them, and threaten their families to collect money. Bhamba used fraudulent Indian, Dominican, and Jamaican identifications for travel and financial transactions related to the conspiracy. In some instances, he created and provided false employment documents on behalf of the aliens to authorities to obtain foreign visas. Bhamba also instructed aliens traveling through foreign airports how to find, and in some instances, pay cash to, corrupt immigration officials, passport control officers, or airport employees in order to bypass regular immigration and passport control procedures.
